Coil vs. ELpH

by Peter Werner - boe666@u.washington.edu

A 20 minute EP-length CD from Coil and one of their alter-egos, ELpH. The Coil track, "Protection", is an acid house remix of some music written for "The Gay Man's Guide to Safer Sex" and is (eventually) slated for release as part of upcoming Coil soundtrack compilation, "The Sound of Music". Its well done as house goes, but doesn't break any new ground either. The three ELpH tracks are more distinctively Coil-esque than the Coil track. The first track is a slow, meditative ambient piece, which gives way to a very dark, intense (and all too brief) ambient piece. The final track is a reprise of the first ELpH track, which is now given time to develop further. I enjoyed this CD a great deal when I first picked it up, though its now one of my less frequently listened to Coil releases.
