Harry Oldfield
Harry pioneered Kirlian Photography as a medical research tool in this country and abroad. From this he developed a three dimensional method of scanning the body using electrical fields. After discovering that diseased states manifest first in the body's energy fields, he went on to develop methods with which to treat these energy imbalances. These methods became known as Electro-Crystal Therapy, which now includes Crytsal-Opto therpay and Crystal Sound Therapy.
He is the founder and principal of an international organization called The Scool of Electro-Crystal Therapy. he lectures worldwide, holds regular training courses and runs a busy clinic in West London.
His current research is into 'Fractals' which he believes hold the mathematical clues to 'The Secret Patterns of Life'. This will also be the title of his next book.
He is co-author with Roger Coghill, of 'The Dark Side of the Brain' published by Element Books, ISB 1-85230-025-6. This covers the subjects of Kirlian photography and Electro-Crystal Therapy.

Crystals
It has been widely accepted over the ages that crystals and gemstones have intrinsic restorative properties, and have been used in an holistic manner in man's ancient history and even in our more recent history in the Far East and India. Legends of their use have been traced back to ancient Egypt and further back to legendary Atlantis. These people did not wear gemstones just for decoration but for therapeutic reasons and mental needs. Moreover, the greek word for adornment was Cosmos, from which our own word cosmetic comes; but in Greek it also meant the world or universe; (we also have the word cosmology) and the gemstone was considered to help the wearer to get 'in tune' with the world about him.
Quartz crystal has piezo-electric properties, which are the ability to respond in a definite and unique vibratory pattern when electrically or mechanically stimulated. These properties are due to the alignment of positive and negative charges within the crystal molecule and lattice structure. This alignment results in a stable and ordered electro-magnetic field. The energy field surrounding a human being is extremely comples and variable. When the energy fields of a crystal and a human interact, the focused pattern of the crystal has a stabilizing effect on that individual's energy field. The production of audible and ultrasonic sound in this energy arrangement is used to best effect in this recorded production of crystal sounds. Other crystals which have piezo-electric properties are topaz and tourmaline, and all of these types were used in this production. Today, quartz crystal is used in many ways in our daily lives. It is used to help amplify sound in microphones and loudspeakers in audio and video equipment; as silicon chips in computer technology and frequency markers; to transmit whole spectrum light in optical lenses and prisms; to focus energy in laser technology (used to measure the distance to the moon as well as delicate eye surgery); to synchronize precisely accurate time in our clocks and watches. Quartz crystal has the ability to amplify, transform, store, focus and transfer energy.

Electro-Crystal Therapy
Electro-Crystal Therapy is a method of diagnosis and treatment (invented by Harry Oldfield) whereby crystals are stimulated by pulsed high frequency electricity, generated by a battery operated unit. The minerals, gems and/or crystals are placed in a sealed glass tube filled with a brine solution. This is so that the specimens are surrounded by a conductive electrolyte. The stones are now electrically stimulated at various pulse repetition rates. Whilst pulsed high frequency and crystals can be effective on their own, when combined, the spectrum of healing increases - and we have treated many disorders, ranging from migraines to multiple sclerosis, with a noticeably good success rate. We have also very successfully treated animals, such as cats, dogs and horses.
The changes that occur in the crystals and in the human energy field have been shown by kirlian photography and by other monitoring methods. However, we accept that although we beneficially treated many complaints it is still much too early to be making any claims of complete cure, since many cases need long-term monitoring to see if symptoms return. There is always the possibility of natural remission, or suggestion on the part of the therapist. All these factors must be considered, even when, as with this therapy, we are getting excellent results. With this system we are inserting crystal energy directly into the body, as is also the case with this recording.

Notes On The Recordings
We used two Electro-Crystal Therapy sound generator units and the following crystals: a 6" synthetic quartz, a 7" flat cluster quartz, a 6" stick quartz, an 8" Madagascar quartz and a cluster of Tourmaline crystals held in a saline solution in a test tube. These were laid on the ECT units in varying combinations and special frequencies pulsed into them. The sresulting sounds were then recorded. it is emphasized that the crystals themselves were the sole source of all sounds you hear on this recording.
Tracks 1, 3, 5, 10 and 11 were mixed and produced by Ken Thomas from crystal sounds supplied by the ECT units. Track 6 was mixed and produced by HÖH from the same sources. All other tracks are pure crystal sounds unaffected by any manipulation, though interference between the crystal's frequencies results in spontaneous and natural harmonics.

A Tibetan Reflection
I was first introduced to Harry Oldfield and his pioneering work with his Electro-Crystal Therpay system when I and Akiko Hada were staying with Gunna Sigga and Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson in Reykjavík in 1986. HÖH has always been a source of fascinating (and sometimes obscure!) information on any subject i wanted to know about and I gratefully acknowledge his bringing Harry's work to my attention. Having been thus introduced, Harry took me much deeper into his research. He revealed in a Western scientific manner the practical application and activity of ideas and concepts which I had been studying in Tibetan Buddhist philosophy under 'Chimed Rig'dzin Lama, Rinpoche and Dr. James Low. The serpent caught its tail and for the first time I felt two currents, for so long artificially separated, meet up.
Harry's work now touches on many areas; he is working with the essential constituents of physical life - energy itself - and his research has now led him to be able, in for example real-time motion video, tofilmthose psycho-energetic forces that make up the human energy field, such as the aura, the chakras, the acupuncture meridians and the kundalini.
I would like to thank Ken Thomas who, as well as producing, engineering and mixing the entire project, gave his time and enthusiasm without payment, as well as Tom Astor of Orinoco Studios who let us use all his studio's facilities with the same generosity. Any sampling or alteration in pitch may result in changing these frequencies thereby resulting in their ineffectiveness. We have not given the settings used on the Electro-Crystal Therapy units to produce the sounds in order to stop misapplication of same.
The crystal frequencies were recorded on a Calrec Soundfield microphone MIC-1V, which was mounted on a special anti-vibration stand. We use this particular microphone because of its low noise performance for digital recording, and it is the only truly coincident-stereo microphone in the world.

Energy Is Eternal Delight

This piece can only be regarded as music insofar as it is organized sound.
No attempts were made to have the end result aesthetically pleasing and the main guideline in its construction was to follow and emphasize the characters of the crystal samples which were being used.
The basic sound source consists of sixteen digital samples of eight different crystals sampled at 44.1 kHz.
It was discovered that the resonance between the crystals produced a pulse which varied between 102-118 beats per minute and so it was decided to build a basic rhythmic pattern which centres around 110 bpm. The results were recorded digitally and treated with rhythmic delays and three different 8 Hz pulses which in theory should be able to act as an external drive to the listener's brain and as a result produce alpha waves.
The full impact of this recording can only be felt by playing it through loudspeakers. Be careful however as it consists of extremely high frequencies and incorrect use may result in damage to your stereo system.
