MAGIC CASTLES Sun Reign LP
2022 repress, black vinyl. 180 gram LP version. Minneapolis psych-rockers Magic Castles are back with a new album, Sun Reign, making an exciting return after founder and songwriter Jason Edmonds suffered a near fatal car accident in November 2019. Magic Castles are well-versed in the ways of psychedelically-inclined folk-rock. Edmonds's smooth vocal harmonies float above the guitars, creating a lush, almost Byrds-esque soundscape. The layered arrangements incorporate Farfisa organ, synths, and dreamy string arrangements. Sun Reign is the band's fourth release on Anton Newcombe's label A Recordings Ltd. Ironically similar to Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Magic Castles have been plagued by lineup changes over the years. Due to this and other factors, in 2016, Edmonds, a single father, decided to take a short hiatus from regular live shows and touring to focus on his family. During that time, (2016-2019) Edmonds, an introverted multi-instrumentalist, continued to record new material in his studio, and also record with a new band at Neil Weir's studio Blue Bell Knoll, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The results of these sessions are the current release, Sun Reign. In November of 2019, tragedy struck and Edmonds was seriously injured in a car accident that required hospitalization and surgery. Friends started a GoFundMe that raised over $20k USD for the uninsured musician's hospital bills, showing an incredible outpouring of love and support for him and his family. Fortunately, Edmonds has made a complete recovery from his injuries and has bounced back remarkably well. In early 2020, Edmonds managed to finish the remaining work on the album Sun Reign, including a previously unreleased song, "Surmise", penned by guitarist Jermiah Doering, and a rare cover of a moody 1966 garage rock song "Ode to the Wind" by Danny and the Counts. Edmonds also began working with a booking agency, planning a return tour to Europe with the band to support the new album. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Due to the global pandemic crisis of Covid-19, the album was delayed until 2021, and the promising tour was cancelled. In May of 2020, Minneapolis police killed George Floyd two blocks from Edmonds's home, which incited riots across the country. The protests led to the burning of Minneapolis, where a long-time music venue and many other buildings were lost. Edmonds' studio was not destroyed although many nearby buildings were. Edmonds is a known supporter of Black Lives Matter. A lot has happened to the Magic Castles since this was released in April 2021 this release took over a year to be manufactured, the band have toured with the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Warlocks in the USA in 2022, and the track "Lost Dimension" was used in the HBO series Succession so not a bad 2022 for the band.

AMBARCHI & ROBBIE AVENAIM, OREN Dream Request LP
Warehouse find, last copies. Bo Weavil presents a sublime duo recording from old sparring partners Oren Ambarchi and Robbie Avenaim, recorded live in Tel Aviv in 2009. This is a single edit of the performance which perfectly captures the chemistry between Robbie's busy percussive maneuvers and Oren's textural overlay. A previous performance of the pair was documented on the Clockwork CD (re-issued by Room40) and prior to this the notorious The Alter Rebbe's Niggun CD was released on Tzadik. Here, the two come together with an energetic performance of free interplay. Steeped in rock, electronics and feedback, the duo conjures an ecstatic instrumental journey. Momentum builds while shifting around a variety of sonic styles until the entire patchwork is laid bare, exposing all the nuance within. Edition of 350 numbered LPs, housed in a heavyweight silkscreened sleeves.

MCPHEE QUARTET, JOE Underground Railroad LP
Warehouse find, last copies. First time vinyl reissue of Joe McPhee's classic CJR LP from 1969. Exact repress of the original artwork. Trumpeter and saxophonist Joe McPhee's first album, Underground Railroad, has been virtually impossible to find on vinyl, issued in an edition of 500 copies on Craig Johnson's CJR label -- it was recorded next to Johnson's house at the Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, New York. It sold out and was never reprinted on vinyl until now. Underground Railroad is comprised of three pieces, the title-track, "Harriett," and "Message from Denmark." The band features McPhee on cornet, pocket trumpet, and tenor, Reggie Marks on tenor, soprano, and flute, bassist Tyrone Crabb, and Ernest Bostic on drums, and is a scathing fire music release. There are wild, ecstatic interactions between McPhee and Marks, while the rhythm section harness the moaning, screaming, crying, and wailing done by the front men. On "Harriett" and "Message from Denmark," the music takes on a decidedly more spatial feel. This is McPhee at the height of his powers of improvisation and composition. As far as vintage ecstatic free jazz goes, it doesn't get much more nail-biting than this. Limited to 500 copies. Joe McPhee (trumpet, pocket cornet, tenor saxophone); Reggie Marks (tenor and soprano saxophone, flute); Tyrone Crabb (bass); Ernest Bostic (drums, percussion, vibes). Recorded on April 13, 1969, West Park, NY.

VON SCHLIPPENBACH, ALEXANDER Globe Unity CD
Reissue, originally released in 1967. In 1966, pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach assembled his first large ensemble to play his compositions "Globe Unity" and "Sun." This 14-piece band, which brought together some of the leading figures in European improvised music, would eventually expand -- incorporating not only Europeans but also American and Asian musicians -- and assume its rightful name: Globe Unity Orchestra. In its nascent outing, beautifully recorded at Ariola Studio in Cologne, Schlippenbach's band was already sensational, performing at various festivals and solidifying the reputations of some of its star players. Most notably among these was a 25-year-old saxophonist named Peter Brötzmann, whose whole band -- saxophonist Kris Wanders, drummer Mani Neumeier, and bassist Peter Kowald, the latter of whom would for a period assume nominal leadership of Globe Unity -- was incorporated into the large Schlippenbach group. Globe Unity was Brötzmann's first outing on LP. Kowald's too. And future drum heroes of the krautrock genre, Neumeier (with Guru Guru) and Jaki Liebezeit (with Can) constitute the incredible rhythm section. If you factor in German early-free-music mainstays Gunter Hampel (here on flute and bass clarinet, no vibes), trumpeter Manfred Schoof, bassist Buschi Niebergall, and tenor saxophonist Gerd Dudek, Dutch saxophonist and clarinetist Willem Breuker, French trumpeter Claude Deron, the enormity of the band's potential becomes apparent. Add Schlippenbach himself, an absolute cyclone on the piano as well as prominent tubular bells and gong, and the global scene is set. Schlippenbach's unique position at the time, as one of the foremost players in German free music, but also as a rising young composer who'd studied with Bernd Alois Zimmermann, allowed him to serve as exactly the right conduit for several approaches to creative music, from introducing his graphically notated scores to making a perfect context for the debuts of future star improvisors Brötzmann and Kowald. Schlippenbach's Globe Unity was first issued on SABA in 1967, then MPS a couple of years after that. It has long been out-of-print and has only ever appeared on CD in a tiny Japanese version published in 1999. Corbett vs. Dempsey's reissue comes with facsimile cover. The music was remastered from the original tapes and is licensed directly from MPS. Anyone interested in the history of improvised music needs to hear Globe Unity, which retains a sense of urgency 56 years after it was waxed.

VA Aquapelago: an Oceans Anthology LP
Anthology introducing the first of a series of albums based on the concept of Aquapelago. "Since the earliest days of the planet there has been a rhythm of tides that creates coastal interzones where humans have foraged and pursued various livelihoods. Developing boats to fish from and technologies that enabled them to immerse themselves deep underwater, the aquatic realm has been one explored, experienced and imagined in various ways. In an effort to express the vitality and richness of this environment I coined the term aquapelago in 2012. The wordplay was deliberate. The neologism was designed to distinguish the liquid inbetweenness of this space from the dry, scattered, lands of archipelagos. The concept of the aquapelago coalesced around themes taken from various places . . .This compilation album takes the concept of the aquapelago into new depths and breaches it on fresh shores. The tracks are soaked with the aquatic. Bassy sonorities boom as if heard deep underwater. Bubbly textures breach the surface, water drips and seabirds soar high above waves. Sugai Kei samples fragments of text concerning the Ningen, a fantastic humanoid/whale that reflects the 'aquapelagic imaginary' of modern Japan and its preoccupation with industrial whaling. Andrew Pekler continues the orientation of his Phantom Islands project -- a sonic atlas of imaginary places -- with a soundscape as if heard by a swimmer just offshore, mixing sounds of the island and the sea together. Mike Cooper's sonic reflection on Hong Kong's Lamma Island is similar, combining the island's ubiquitous barking dogs with the slurp of waves on rocky shores, conjuring a languorous time before Chinese crackdowns on the territory. Taking another tack, the Dead Mauriacs gleefully water-ski through collage of tropical island exoticisms, replete with glitchy orientalism, while Babau combines skittering idiophone melodies with resonant glissandi. Vica Pacheco moves between dense and airy sounds, as if crossing between surf lines and the space above. Yannkick Dauby's track is also imbued with in-betweenness, evoking ambient sounds heard through a ship's hull. Sculpture's 'Froth Surfer' realizes its title, with bubbling sounds and rhythms that evoke Hawaiian surfing filtered through layers of time and distance. Reminding us of the shore necessary for aquapelagic spaces, Franceso Cavaliere and Tomoko Sauvage's composition anchors the album, centred around shaken rhythms and resonant ringing tones and drones..." --Philip Hayward, December 2021

4TH MOVEMENT, THE The 4th Movement LP
2018 reissue. Originally released in 1980. "There is life after Death after all -- and just like you've heard, it hinges on accepting You-Know-Who as your lord and savior. 1980: it was the dawn of a new age. Built on the broken backs and bodies of those who had hoped and dreamed for a better world, the '80s made it clear: that world wasn't coming. A generation and more plunged into the abyss. But what of Death? The Hackney brothers were no different from anybody else -- in the heat and tumult of the 1970s, they'd seen that new world coming. They'd raised their voices righteously, transforming with outrage and hunger their all-in-the-family power-trio Rock Funk Fire Express into the legends called Death. The combination of Bobby and Dannis' pile-driving rhythm, older brother David's hard-rock guitar leads and an effervescent combination of lyrical angst, missionary zeal and vision-spirit were an unknown hybrid on the African-American side of Detroit in the mid-70s -- and everywhere else, for that matter! These were the sounds the world knows today as For the Whole World to See -- but at the time, the brothers managed only to self-release two songs on a basically undistributed 7" record, which caused no label anywhere to express any interest in a record deal for the band called Death. Stung by the indifference, they reconsidered their position. The three corners of their personal cosmic triangle hadn't been enough to realize their Death ambitions. It was time for the 4th Movement. Death had plenty of existential/spiritual elements to them; a desire to know where they stood in the big picture was always key to the Hackneys' musical ambitions. As the 4th Movement, they would direct all those inquiries to Christ. But the raw spirit of Death was still the driving force behind the music; the sound of the 4th Movement captured the trio with rough-hewn intensity as they reached new heights of composition, creating an album-length set of songs that verged on Punk/Christian opera. It would be years before it would occur to any other musical act to try such an outrageous thing. Recorded in their new home base of Burlington, Vermont and released by the group on their own Tryangle Records imprint, the 4th Movement was destined for private-press notoriety in the world that was coming. But in the world in which the Hackney brothers were striving to be heard, the 4th Movement was the second seismic rumbling of Death..."

FATHER YOD AND THE SPIRIT OF '76 Kohoutek LP
2022 restock, last copies. "....the second coming of Kohoutek. This was the first spontaneous release that was made into a record, credited to Father Yod and The Spirit of '76. It came out in 1973, the year of Kohoutek, when the imminent arrival of the big comet spawned a new round of cosmic consciousness in the media and with people all over the planet. This was more than a comet, its radiance was enormous, it came from ancient times to be experienced again by the enlightened people of the day. The Source Family were alive with expectation about the return of this long-haired messenger, and Father devoted considerable time chanting and eventually changing in his identity to Yahowa while meditating on the comet. Events like these were to be cherished for bringing infusions of energy that could only be accessed via the rare occasions. Life had to be lived in order to grow -- and the two sides of Kohoutek are a special jam that passes through tranquility to exultation, a tapping of the passing flame in the skies and a greeting from Father to the messenger and bearer of such awesome gifts. Very pure. After the original LP pressing in 1973, Kohoutek was issued on CD for the first time as a part of the God and Hair boxset in 1996; this is the first time the vinyl has been available again since the 1970s. Features all of the original artwork, including an insert about the comet, plus new inserts with reflections from Isis. These emanations from the original Source are pure, uncut spiritual visions from the mid-1970s, not to be missed."

PEARLS BEFORE SWINE Balaklava (50th Anniversary Restoration) LP
Originally released in 1968. "Released in late 1968, the second Pearls Before Swine record continued to deliver music with a preternatural sense of what the youth of America wanted to hear. One Nation Underground had been a surprise hit when released in 1967 by the hipster free-jazz indie label ESP, receiving an incredible organic response, with continuous underground radio play and sales. Coming from obscurity in Florida into a position of speaking to people everywhere, Tom Rapp and his bandmates felt emboldened to embark upon an evolved piece of record making. The music of Balaklava strips away the manic, post-garage band diversity of the first album, instead grounding the production around Tom Rapp's guitar and singing, with the touches of instrumental color all the more dramatic and striking. Producer Richard Alderson utilized breathy sweeps of reverb, sound effects, tape manipulation and spoken word recordings along with an array of instrumental overdubs including banjo, marimba, organ, clavinet, flute, English horn and strings (played by the band along with New York jazz session players Bill Salter and Al Schackman, plus The Fugs' Lee Crabree and legendary saxophonist Joe Farrell, with Selwart Clarke and Warren Smith contributing string arrangements) to reach for the universal space sought in Tom Rapp's meditative, existential songs. The message writ between the leaves of Balaklava -- WAR NO MORE -- is elegantly written . . . Musically, the message is conveyed with one or two passing lyrical references, letting Tom Rapp's use of literary reference and allegory dwell on the transcendence of love and pastoral beauty in life, achieving a stinging impact, as much by what isn't said as what is. This sets Balaklava apart from much of other protest music from the Vietnam era -- and it has allowed it to age gracefully into the 21st century. Like One Nation Underground before it, Balaklava celebrates 50 years of life in stunning fashion. Original producer Richard Alderson has remastered the album, restoring the precision of the original mix -- and in the process, revealing fantastically dynamic performances and dispersing the haze of the years that had gathered over latter-day editions of Balaklava. The music and message it intended to deliver to the world are still needed, the peace still sought. The fight to understand and to change is still ongoing. And so, Balaklava has fresh purpose, after all this time..."

VANDROOGENBROECK, JOEL Far View LP
2021 release. 2021 release. "Far View is a compilation of tracks from Joel Vandroogenbroeck's series of library music releases for the Coloursound label -- a uniquely trippy catalog of music vignettes long overdue for their day in the library music sun, remastered from the original analog reels! The late Joel Vandroogenbroeck was among that rare breed of musician who defy all categorization, using music conventions to explore the far reaches of human and cosmic consciousness. After passing through the jazz and rock worlds from the 1950s through the 70s, Joel found new outlets for his expansive vision in the '80s with the Swiss library music label Coloursound. Far View draws tracks from these releases, which form a unique entry in the genre of library music. For the uninitiated, this is just one way to begin a brilliant musical trip through Vandroogenbroeck's undersung career . . . Vibing on the eclectic energies of the day, Vandroogenbroeck formed Brainticket, whose approach to composition fused jazz, rock, and a mélange of global musical traditions, combining a western rhythm section and analog synthesizers with an astonishing array of acoustic instruments; ethnic flutes, sitar, harp, kalimba and all manner of percussion. Steeped in diverse approaches of playing and listening, Brainticket drew from prog rock and psych, traditional sounds and minimalist music, all of which passed through their hands like the tributaries that formed the basis of what would soon be known as New Age music. In the late 1970s, Vandroogenbroeck began composing for sound libraries, with recordings to be used as underlay music in films, radio and television. Gunter Greffenius' Coloursound Library was formed in 1979 with an inclusive vision of music, including experimental, progressive rock, and some of the earliest examples of ambient music -- styles not well represented in other libraries. Coloursound gave Joel the freedom to create music in any style or genre, and over the next decade-plus, he embarked on a musical journey that is unmatched anywhere in the world of library music. Working under the pseudonyms VDBVDB, Joel, and Eric Vann, his output on Coloursound is some of his most sublime and otherworldly -- ranging from dark electronics to imagined music of the ancient past to ethereal ambient sounds of the future, which makes sense, as Joel's records were always ahead and in and out of their time . . . Curated by David Hollander, whose Unusual Sounds album and book of the same name delightfully explore the library music world, Far View draws from ten of Joel's Coloursound albums with lovely cohesion. Featuring brilliantly remastered sound, liner notes from David Hollander, album art designed by Robert Beatty and reproductions of the Coloursound album jackets, Far View is an entry point to Joel Vandroogenbroek's mind-bending body of work --sonic soma to expand your consciousness and vibrate with the cosmos."

WAND Spiders In the Rain CD
"Since 2014, Wand have made five albums (and an EP) in the studio and a living playing on the road. Business/pleasure: the two sides of their (multiverticed, decagon) coin, flipping in the strobe light of ongoing self-actualization. And yet, by doing both at the same time -- making a record of them playing live -- they've now made their best one yet. How do you get Spiders In the Rain? Start by going all the way back to January 2020. Do you remember? Wand do. They'd been touring Laughing Matter for ten months. They'd done the coast, spanned the country, crossed the water twice, came back home and kept on going . . . driving, flying, occasionally floating (or maybe just thinking they were?), always on to the next town. They did all kinds of shows -- clubs, ballrooms, festival gigs with no roof overhead -- the songs expanding and contracting according to the dimensions of each day. Seventy-nine shows, and everything that was involved -- the miles that ran beneath them, the different places and people everywhere, the music as it breathed, making everyone change every night -- alchemized the band, and they drove deeper into their far horizon than they'd ever previously gone. The essential truth of the live vibe -- that it's always better when everybody's here -- was clear, so they booked a few shows more in Cali, from L.A. up to Marin. They brought along light and projections from The Mad Alchemist Liquid Light Show and Mike Kreibel and Zac Hernandez too, to tape everything -- to get the big-deck energy out of performances in S.F. and L.A., but also to draw it out of the margins in Sacramento, Novato and Big Sur. It all happened, too. Everyone brought their experience -- the kids in the audience and the folks behind the boards, all along with Wand, where it meant something different for everybody in the van. Packaged sumptuously with artwork from Sam Klickner, Spiders In the Rain is an arc of natural beauty and man-made abstraction inside and out, on an epic scale. Wand are orchestra and machine on Spiders In the Rain, one with the audience, able to get inside any dimension of their sound, whether its songs from their second album or their last one. It almost felt okay that they couldn't play any more shows immediately after, until it didn't again. But the change was made: when they started up again doing shows in December of 2021, the energy moved just as fluidly through the room and the band."

STONE, BILL Stone LP
2021 reissue. Originally released in 1970. "Just when you thought every loner folk genius had been outed/discovered, hyped, and pontificated about, a new/old challenger lurks in the murky depths of time . . . and Maine. Sure, you have your Skip Spences, Dave Bixbys, Stone Harbours, and Perry Leopolds already, but have you heard the lonesome sound of Bill Stone? Well, don't feel bad or 'unkool', hardly anyone has -- unless you lived in rural Maine in the early '70s and grabbed his barely-ever seen LP in the day. Titled simply Stone, Bill's mysterious album was pressed in the micro-est of quantities, covering wistful, airy psychedelia on par with the UK's Mark Fry's classic Dreaming of Alice, while still evoking the earthy, evening-hour melancholy of Leonard Cohen or Tom Rapp. Stone was also especially influenced by one Donny P. Leitch, one Robby Zimmerman, and much trad folk, while growing up in his hometown of Old Town, Maine. Stone started out playing in a few small folk ensembles while also moonlighting with occasional solo gigs, finally recording this lone platter in 1969 in a pottery studio (!?) on a 2-track Panasonic tape recorder in Boothbay, Maine (where he says, they competed with a cat in heat). The LP features Tom Blackwell and Bill Stone on guitars, Arthur Webster on bass, Bob Blackwell and Skip Smith on drums, and Bill Stone and Beth Waterhouse on vocals. It also seems cover artist Doug Bane went on to become an acclaimed cosmic painter -- committing loads of animals, psychedelic scenes, and Native American portraits to canvas, who knew? But we digress -- anyhow, seems Stone's solo career slowed down after marriage hit, and he transitioned to playing covers in bars for cash, but after acquiring a masters and doctorate in education, he moved into the teaching walk of life. Bill published books and articles on subjects as diverse as school counseling and chaos theory -- but now retired, he's returned to music, even recording a new album of originals and traditional numbers, based on his experiences as a cab driver (another wrinkle in the Stone Saga we must hear more of someday). So, with Bill back in action and the world slowly crawling out of a disillusioning haze, now seems like the perfect time for a first-time-ever reissue of this incredibly rare, happy-sad, gently delicate, Stone(d) classic of a downer song-cycle."

MOORE, ANTHONY OUT LP
2020 reissue. Originally released in 1976. "'Rock and roll was a relief after the rigor of Henry Cow.' That was one of the thoughts in Anthony Moore's brain in the late summer of 1975. Of course, leaving Henry Cow had meant the dissolution of the band he'd founded, Slapp Happy, as the two groups had essentially merged over the previous year. Still, there was plenty yet to do with music, and based on Anthony's propensity for odd left turns, a solo career in the pop world seemed like a fine way to follow up his prior excursions in tape-based modern composition, writing soundtracks for experimental films, avant-pop and experimental rock. Managed and published by Blackhill Enterprises, Anthony signed a solo deal with Virgin -- and while the music he recorded for OUT didn't see release upon completion in 1976 (and wasn't released at all until a CD issue of the late 1990s), we're finally getting those historic recordings for OUT on vinyl after all these years, with the long-lost original artwork restored. It is worth the wait -- an absolute lost chapter from mid-70s, proto-new wave Britain, bringing to mind the bright and subversive sounds of Eno, Wyatt, Ayers, Cale and so many other trail-blazers from that time. A fantastic joy to the ears! The original quality of OUT according to Anthony: folk-rock with weird time signatures. It made sense -- odd bar numbers drifting in and out of sync were a driving aspect of the minimalist records he made for Polydor in '71 and '72, and now, played on piano, they sounded like the beginning of potentially radio-worthy songs. Music was still growing within him -- it had first exploded in a weird, psychic shock that hit around the age of 18, comprised of equal parts youthful heartbreak, drugs and a recognition of the late 60s' decaying zeitgeist. This was the start of a career-long pendulum-swing between opposite poles: experimental and popular music. Never happier than when working with machines and processes, Anthony hadn't really allowed his pure musician self free reign until OUT. For 'the troubadour with Revoxes,' this venture into playing guitar and singing in a professional context was a new thing. But it developed quickly and with the help of a bunch of like-minded studio folk and a hive of artists, writers and friends who revolved around an apartment in West London, the work progressed steadily. From the summer of '75 to spring '76, Anthony was in and out of the studios, along with producer Peter Jenner from Blackhill, working with a cross-section of Britain's finest musicians and engineers at legendary facilities like Abbey Road, Air, and Richard Branson's Oxfordshire getaway, The Manor, to produce the eleven tracks that make up OUT..."

SPUNT/JOHN WIESE, DEAN The Echoing Shell LP
"With their duo debut, Dean Spunt and John Wiese invite you to experience the frenzy of percussive space and discreet sound found inside The Echoing Shell. This is the first official collaboration between the two veteran music-makers, though their connection goes back to 1999. As John recalls, "'[Dean] was in a high school arts program at CalArts. A friend and I were recording the first Sissy Spacek demo in the design studios there, and taking a tape to my car over and over again to check the mix. Dean was walking through the parking lot with a Locust shirt on, we said hello, and he immediately got into a car with two strangers to 'listen to a tape'.' The tape-listening ended well, apparently. Dean and John became friends and fellow travelers in L.A. circles and beyond: in 2005, John did a remix for Dean's first band, Wives; in 2007, Dean played percussion with Sissy Spacek's 13-Tet Los Angeles; John toured with No Age several times and collaborated live with them in 2010. Under the Sissy Spacek name as well as his own, John's recordings for his own Helicopter label and many others kicked things off for him around the end of the century; since then, he's been constantly engaged in solos and collaborations on record, performances, and installations around the world. In addition to Dean's ever-growing discography with No Age, he curates his own label, Post Present Medium. In 2018, Radical Documents released Dean's solo debut EE Head, which explored concrète and experimental techniques in a four-part, album length piece. The Echoing Shell is born of Dean and John's shared understanding, using John's process common to Sissy Spacek: elaborate sound-collage works using source material originating from punk, hardcore and improvised music. A series of impositions, tape manipulation and edits recompose the material, cracking open the crust of the source, freeing its implied guts to steam forth in gushes of extreme noise. On The Echoing Shell, this is as often noise as it is extreme intimacy, seeming at times to be sourced from within Dean's drumkit, at other times appearing to emanate from the capsules of microphones and the circuits of the signal path itself. One may read these collaged sounds as abstraction, but there is a unique language conveyed in their assembly, forming something like word-shapes and meaning. And intention: the two side-long pieces, comprised of many short sections, form a linear whole, creating alternately ripping and discriminating music -- and meaning -- in the process. The Echoing Shell is a fantastic conception in contemporary musique concrète, combining incendiary post-rock power, dry humor and astonishing depth of field..."

JULIA, IGNACIO Linger On: The Velvet Underground Book
Ecstatic Peace Library announce Linger On by Velvets-obsessed music journalist Ignacio Julià. This sumptuous new volume features interviews with Lou Reed, John Cale, Moe Tucker, Doug Yule, Nico, and the most in-depth interviews ever granted by Sterling Morrison, as well as never-before-published photographs by James Hamilton. The author of Linger On is an internationally respected and trusted Velvet Underground chronicler; he is the Barcelona-based rock n' roll editor Ignacio Julià, who also published books in Spanish and English on American post-punk band Sonic Youth. When members of The Velvet Underground toured in Spain Ruta 66 journalist Ignacio Julià was usually among their entourage, front row center at curtain call, backstage after the gig, in attendance of afterparties and sometimes discovered in the band's hotel rooms until lobby call. Since 1985, Ignacio Julià has obsessively followed the band's career, interviewing and wining and dining the members over the years, and publishing countless articles, intimate profiles and books in Spanish and English on The Velvet Underground. He is known among international Velvets fan clubs as one of the most dedicated chroniclers and archivists of studio bootlegs, live concert recordings, writings, and poetry to the extent that even the band's own members refer to his knowledge for fact-checking purposes. 11.7 x 8.27 inches; Portrait; 244 pages + PPC.

PERELMAN & MATTHEW SHIPP, IVO Fruition CD
The eighteenth duo album by Ivo Perelman and Matthew Shipp. "We believe it's our best effort so far," says Perelman. "Every rhythmic and melodic gesture [in 'Nine'] that tenor saxist and pianist feed each other in this remarkable duet is met with a musically and emotionally appropriate response from the other. And somehow or other, this entirely free jazz somehow coalesces and takes shape in a way that is absolutely perfect." And, "each track in this remarkable album is a highlight in itself and different from every other track. These two artists have played and recorded together so often that they do indeed almost seem to read each other's mind, and at this stage the psychic communication is so complete that it almost sounds as if we, the listeners, are eavesdropping in on a very personal and intimate conversation." --Lynn René Bayley "The music flows naturally from their fruitful exchanges, informed by mutual listening, skill and imagination. In the span of four minutes, ideas and images follow one after the other, become distinct then disappear, the players' energies converging into a single stream which one flees from as the other diverts it in a new and unforeseen direction; the passage from the known, what they have played in the past, to the unknown, instant creation. They propose forms, cadences, timbres, harmonic clusters, spirals of breath stretched to screaming heights, heartening melodies, curious ostinatos, elliptical flights, chords constantly shifting as new elements appear, by accident or by enchantment, compelled by the pair's instincts as improvisers. [...] Neither player is a soloist or accompanist; in their weightless, whirling ballads, both share the arduous, integral role of dialogist. The ego fades into the collective dimension, as the music demands." J-M Van Schouwburg (translated from French) Personnel: Ivo Perelman - tenor saxophone; Matthew Shipp - piano. Recorded by Jim Clouse on June 25, 2021 at Park West Studios. Produced by Steve Holtje. Cover art by Yuko Otomo.

MARCUS, MICHAEL Abstractions in Lime Caverns CD
After paying his dues with bluesmen Albert King and Bobby "Blue" Bland and jazzman Jaki Byard, Michael Marcus had his first album released in 1991, when he was 39. He's been much more prolific since then, co-leading Cosmosamatics with Sonny Simmons, SaxEmble with Frank Lowe and James Carter, Blue Reality Quartet with Joe McPhee, Warren Smith, and Jay Rosen, and Duology with Ted Daniel as well as Marcus's many albums as sole leader. Frank Lacy moved to New York in 1981 and soon established himself (primarily as a trombonist) as Art Blakey's music director, a member of the Mingus Big Band, sideman with Lester Bowie, David Murray Big Band, McCoy Tyner, and Roy Hargrove among others, and a leader in his own right. Tarus Mateen has worked with artists ranging from Christina Aguilera and OutKast to Betty Carter, Jason Moran, Hargrove, Greg Osby, and Terence Blanchard, to name a few. Jay Rosen of Cosmosamatics is also a member of Trio X with McPhee and Dominic Duval and Resonance Impeders with Chris Dahlgren and Briggan Krauss and has played with Mark Whitecage, Ivo Perelman, Gebhard Ullmann, etc.Personnel: Michael Marcus - soprano sax, tenor sax, alto tarogato, G clarinet, bass flute, gong; Frank Lacy - French horn; Tarus Mateen - Marcoustico acoustic bass; Jay Rosen - drums and percussion. BEZBOG Dazhbog LP
Bezbog is a duo formed in 2013 by David Machado and Dora Vieira. Since their first release in 2014, the self-titled Bezbog EP, they have been exploring both acoustic and electronic instruments to create music that lives somewhere in between genres, styles, doctrines, and musical cultures. Alongside many underground venues throughout Portugal and Spain, they have shown their work in festivals such as No Noise, Milhões de Festa, Out.Fest, and TESLA at the Castile, and León Museum of Contemporary Art, and other places such as the Serralves Museum in Porto and MK Gallery in the UK. Their latest long player takes its name from the solar deity of the Slavic pantheon, Dazhbog -- the god that gives, and its idea flows into the concept of this record, through the themes of life, light and darkness, birth and rebirth, and the idea of the omnipresent cycle. You can find cycles in nature, music, and life itself can be thought of as a cycle, from the micro to the macro scale. As they seek to embed their music with these ideas, in a way, their music becomes new sacred music, the music of modern pagan rituals. While Bezbog's music seeks to replicate the meaning of what that music was, an escape from the profane and a connection to the sacred plane, in form it reconstructs it in light of the duo's influences, from the obvious Portuguese and pagan folklore, chamber and sacred music, to the darkness of doom and heavy metal, the structured improvisations of North American jazz, and psycho-acoustic hallucinations and the hash transients of electronic music. Dazhbog, while a passenger of the same train of thought as their previous studio work, comes in a different direction from it. Chernobog consists of two short and heavy tracks, painstakingly crafted during several months, while their latest studio effort is a long suite of eight tracks, composed and recorded live throughout 2020, that form a light and bright record where the duo embedded most of their influences.

CHADBOURNE, EUGENE Mourning of the Praying Mantis / Worms With Strings LP
"This is the first in a series of Feeding Tube vinyl releases devoted to the Insect and Western catalog of recordings, newly mastered and often with added material. 'Mourning of the Praying Mantis' was created in the earliest series of Insect and Western scores, first performed by the Bull Fiddle contrabass quartet of Oakland in 1996. Following what I felt was a classic interpretation by the Insect and Western Party trios and quartets, the piece circulated through the evenings devoted to my Insect and Western music at concerts taking place around the United States. By 1997 I had an interesting and diverse set of recordings in a variety of media and assembled a long version of the piece blending many of the soloists featured in the different performances. This was the centerpiece of the first commercially released collections of my Insect and Western pieces, a CD entitled Insect Attracter on the British Leo label. 'Mourning of the Praying Mantis' was one of the scores I brought to a duet session with master percussionist Warren Smith in 2012. In creating a new special archive of Insect and Western for the Feeding Tube label, my priority regarding 'Mourning of the Praying Mantis' was to bring in the Warren Smith recording, to my great personal enjoyment which I now hope to share with the listener. Now also including the 2012 New York City sessions with Warren Smith, the 20 plus minutes of is fabricated from, in roughly the order the location appears, all from 1997: 1. Studio session, Wyandotte, Michigan/Frank Pahl, engineer; 2. Concert at Barking Legs Theatre, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dec. 5-6; 3. Concert at Venue 9, San Francisco, California, Oct. 16; 4. Concert at Knitting Factory, New York City, NY, July 29; 5. Concert at Lunar Cabaret, Chicago, Illinois, Sept. 10-11; 6. Concert at art gallery, Louisville, Kentucky, Sept. 14; 7. Concert at Alligator Lounge, Los Angeles, California, October."Musicians in order or appearance: Eugene Chadbourne - five-string banjo, Deering electric "Crossfire" banjo; Carrie Shull - oboe; Brian Ritchie - bass guitar, shakuhachil; Warren Smith - bass marimba, vibraphone, percussion; Mischa Feigin - balilika; Carrie Biolo - vibraphone; Steve Good - bass clarinet; Joee Conroy - violin; Dan Plonsey - soprano saxophone; Gino Robair - mandolin; Ashley Adams - contrabass; Brent Dunn - contrabass; Tom Heasley - tuba; Bruce Wagner - mandolin; Bob Stagner - drums; Charles Waters - soprano saxophone; Barry Mitterhof - mandolin; Ted Reichman - accordion; Bunk Gardner - flute.

SMOKE POINT Smoke Point LP
"Smoke Point is a duo composed of Brian Foote (Peak Oil, Leech, Kranky) and Sage Caswell (Spring Theory). With their self-titled debut LP on Geographic North, the Los Angeles-based duo takes a captivating cruise through heady ambient drifts and ruthlessly rhythmic loop dreams. Foote and Caswell first teamed up to create a series of improvisational atmospherics throughout a multi-room art gallery. The pair conceived of a sprawling, dynamic experience with tones, rhythms, and textures that varied from room to room, yet were inextricably tuned and melded together. Visitors could serve as a sort of human crossfader, moving through the gallery and dialing up or down aural aspects as they pleased. And although the collaboration came together to create music for a specific physical space, the concept was never fully realized until what is now the duo's first record. Smoke Point brings five extended, cruise-controlled exercises that calmly violate the Venn diagram's overlap between boundless dance music and unfathomable ambiance. But beyond the boundaries of an album as a set of songs, Foote and Caswell cracked things wide open and recontextualized the album as an actual DJ tool that is ambient leaning and melodically focused. To achieve this, Smoke Point offers a bounty of loops in the form of endless locked grooves on the vinyl edition and brief but equally utilitarian snippets on the digital edition of the LP."

PICCHIO DAL POZZO Picchio Dal Pozzo LP
2022 repress. 2011 release. Goodfellas present a reissue of Picchio Dal Pozzo's self-titled album, originally released in 1976. Picchio Dal Pozzo can be considered as the definitive "Canterbury"-inspired band coming from Italy's 1970 progressive rock scene. Their 1976 debut album shows an incredibly rich sound tapestry, made out of some peculiar ingredients. Oblique tunes and liquid harmonies, airy flutes, crispy horns, loads of electric piano and fuzz bass, drops of jazz, pop romanticism, waves of minimalism and deep pataphysical vocals and lyrics. The whole album develops through a sequence of highly composed material and wide open sound forms. A deep journey through a multi-layered soundscape with echoes of Hatfield & The North, Soft Machine, Robert Wyatt and Zappa. Picchio Dal Pozzo's first work was out on Grog Records and subsequently reissued only in Japan (Grog Records was an independent label known for releasing the work of Italian underground pop groups of the seventies such as Corte Dei Miracoli, Latte e Miele and Celeste). 180 gram vinyl. "One of the most original, impressive and highly respected of all the experimental groups to have come out of Italy in the 1970s" --Chris Cutler.

YAWNING MAN Historical Graffiti CD
Reissue, originally released in 2016. Historical Graffiti is the band's fourth full-length. Gary Arce, the guitarist, seems comfortable sitting on a single vamp throughout the opener "The Wind Cries Edalyn", allowing the additions of violin and bandoleon accordion (played by the tango musicians Sara Ryan and Adolfo Trepiana, respectively) to weave melodies in between. Despite the titular connection to the Jimi Hendrix song, it bears no discernible resemblance to "The Wind Cries Mary" and it is a deceptive number; what seems such a simple, almost easy-listening song reveals more color with every listen. "Her Phantom Finger of Copenhagen" is slightly darker and almost sounds, with the slight distortion on Arce's guitar, as if it could have come from Pot Head, the EP the band released in 2005. Mario Lalli, the bass player, begins the third song, "Naomi Crayola" with a throbbing single note, aided by Bill Stimson's metronomic drumming. Ryan's violin returns in "The Secret Language of Elephants", this time playing the role of keeping the main vamp alive while Arce's guitar generates an evocative soundscape that opens in your mind a wide, violet sky like that above a desert the moment after the sun disappears for the night. The closing song and title track is the most free of the five on the album, with Stimson's beat conjuring memories of Kyuss's more mellow moments.

Hashension is composed by six heavy reefer songs which express the band's devotion to the "Green God". The recipe is the same, but always evolving: an infusion of slow and swampy doom/sludge metal with hints of psychedelia, and the band members' hardcore-punk background gives the record a groovy and personal feel throughout.

GONCHAROVA, VALENTINA Ocean: Symphony for Electric Violin and Other Instruments in 10+ Parts 2LP
Restocked. Valentina Goncharova's double-LP fundamental conceptual musical work released in full uncut form as part of Hidden Harmony Lost Tapes series. Restored and mastered from the original 6.3mm analog tapes. A large-scale work comprising eleven parts of varied, brooding, mystical reflection in which the author alters the instrumentation to fit both programmatic and musical character of each section.Ultra deluxe archival release from Hidden Harmony Recordings, based in Tallinn, Estonia. 2x12" 200-gram vinyl records in poly lined inner sleeves, 33RPM, black vinyl. Thick old style tip-on gatefold outer sleeve. Includes a 12-page booklet, which detailly explain the album conceptual basis, background and creation context, and provides insights into unique sound recording and technical solutions adapted during album recording in 1988. Created and written with direct involvement of V. Goncharova and I. Zubkov.Liner notes: "My task is to allow the listener to penetrate deeper into the music. The music is wholly improvisational. It has no concept in the rational sense of the word. Its concept is purely intuitive. It presumes The Law of Analogies: 'As above so below. Man is the same as the Universe. The Universe is the same as Man.' ('Emerald Tablet' by Hermes Trismegistus). This intuition is a kind of rephrased logic which uses many more symbols which contain not only philosophical but also imaginative meanings/visionary interpretations. This music is a stream of consciousness in its purest form: not an imitation of a stream, as in the 'suggestive poetry' of the 20th century, but a stream where one flow is superimposed on another (a multilateral passage of recording). And, if we think this flow of music will be better understood under the influence of a verbal flow, then the verbal flow should also be more intuitive and associative, as objective for this short write-up you are currently reading. Ocean did not appear within the coordinate system of logical scientific thinking of the last four centuries. It can be said that it is based on an intuitive concept of representations of the world which are captured in music figuratively. Similar to how myths were created in time immemorial with only partial support from verbal associations. Ocean is an experience of passing the human, soul, and mind through the different states of the material world: birth, development, and achievement of perfection, transformation at the points of 'The Way' and 'Silence', the manifestation of the harmony of the world (Om), which until then had remained in a latent state. It is averse to both mainstream contemporary physics and fringe scientific research. It exists outside their explanatory power. Ocean is the source of all forms that can receive their life within time and space. Here it is. It has everything: beautiful and terrible, good and evil, self-sacrifice, and betrayal. Boundless love and inspired creativity. But contact does not happen immediately. The memory of a bygone civilization is still fresh, and of the dearest things left with it."

HUMAN TOILET Leap Year 7"
"Human Toilet, who gave up the ghost in 2013, have a new 7" of old songs about what they excelled at; failure and self-sabotage . . . Human Toilet was singer Suarez, guitarist Diamond, bassist Young, and drummer Cran. The band, gleefully too dumb for one kind of bad hardcore and too smart for another kind of bad hardcore, set out to be a Jesus Lizard rip-off band and succeeded beyond their wildest expectations at sounding like The Cows covering Lazy Cowgirls . . . Lesser souls and minds might see Human Toilet as a noise-ROCK outlier amongst the label's catalog of oceanic drones and scabrous techno, but Hospital Productions is first and foremost, a freak scene." --Zachary Lipez Splatter vinyl; edition of 250.

ZIMMERMAN/JOSHUA BURKETT, TUCKER Tunnel Visions LP
"In the 1970s, Tucker Zimmerman made some low-key acoustic guitar records in England. He was raised in California, and sang like it. And between those two circumstances, Zimmerman happens to have sat in with a whole lotta famous people; The Spiders From Mars, guys from Yes and Traffic and T Rex, Mary Hopkin, Paul Butterfield, Aynsley Dunbar, Ricky Fataar, and plenty more. The seriously famous are always moving along to whatever's new. But Zimmerman has kept his hand in. There were a couple records in the '80s, an interest in novels and words, one in the '90s, an '00s collaboration with another American expat who works on the Belgian version of The Voice, etc. Now he has a new record for the teens. Of himself reading poetry no less. And that is exactly the sort of project that could easily degenerate into the underground dude's answer to a Stan Lee cameo. The reason it doesn't is less about the words chosen (though they're fine) and more about the obvious lived grit in the Mucinex-wracked glottis that is Zimmerman's voice these days. The sensitive folk rocker has given way to a grizzled gentleman. Zimmerman is more confident as his 77 years and sounds like a paisley Sam Elliott who spends days wandering outside dispensing advice to clouds and dogs. Zimmerman has also found a precise complement in accompanist Josh Burkett, whose life reads like an indie update to the performer Zimmerman was in the '70s. Burkett runs a record store in Western Mass., and has been a heavy in interesting underground projects of one sort or another for roughly 30 years (Vermonster, Bimbo Shrineheads, Tarp, playing with Ed Askew, and solo records). The seams are allowed to show on these recordings. You can hear Zimmerman stop and go back to correct himself, and the sound levels vary. That puts things firmly in the contemporary camp, ensuring that this ain't no greatest hits that never were. In fact, Josh nips in with his acoustic guitar so subtly, and gets the rhythm of each talking point so just right so that the two performers dovetail again and again. And so, the record can exist between them both, a new thing all it's own." --Angela Sawyer15 sections span the course of two sides, creating a total run time of 41 minutes and 52 seconds that is reminiscent of the Groupe de resherches musicales (GRM). Old Style Tip-On jacket at Stoughton Pressed at QRP in Salina, Kansas 2022.

WHITING, AMANDA Lost in Abstraction LP
LP version. Includes download card. Welsh harpist Amanda Whiting returns on Jazzman Records following on from her successful debut album After Dark (JMAN 125CD/LP, 2021). New explorations and global changing events have led Whiting to Lost in Abstraction. The Reynolds/Thorne/Whiting trio is joined again by the mesmerizing lines of flautist Chip Wickham, resuming their conversation reminiscent of Dorothy Ashby and Frank Wess. Lost in Abstraction was written during a period of the unknown when Whiting, like most, explored her own sense of self. The world paused, with no timeframe, and the fragility of life was laid bare. A time when humanity was left searching for purpose. Freedom and the dependable structures of familiarity were dissolved in most aspects of life. But music stayed constant. Creativity kept weaving its thread, connecting music and its makers in an indissoluble bond. The album explores the questions and realizations whilst confined. The spiritual findings, the playful curiousness and the reflective moments of loss. Whiting's writing indulges the listener with the spiritual ethereal washes of sound demanded of the harp, whilst also embracing her influences across many genres. Classically trained, her roots are evident. But with an emotionally charged energy and spiritual questioning, a new soundscape of modernity has emerged. So often associated with Ashby and Coltrane, the harp finds itself in the hands of a new voice which tells the story of a period of time where the world was unified in reflection. So, what is that feeling when you resonate? When your breath steadies and you let go. Lines no longer restrict or choke. Energies envelop, yet set you free. Are you lost or found? Personnel: Amanda Whiting - harp; Chip Wickham - flute; Aidan Thorne - bass; Jon Reynolds - drums; Baldo Verdú - percussion.

DAPHNI Cherry CD
Daphni aka Caribou aka Dan Snaith announces a new album, Cherry, his first album since 2017. Cherry will be released via Snaith's own Jiaolong label. Whether in the studio or the club, Daphni has always been a pursuit where Dan Snaith lets the music find its own path. With Cherry this is more evident than ever, this sense of the tracks as objects with life and desires outside of Snaith's control has now become a driving force in their creation. "There isn't anything obvious that unifies it or makes it hang together," Snaith says. "I think it was good that it was made without worrying about any of that. I just made it." Recorded over a prolonged period, Snaith let the music go where it wanted to go. It wasn't until he put everything he'd been tinkering with together that he realized what he had. "It's weird that when the tracks were put in what felt like the right order it took on a new coherence," he says, "where it pings quickly from one idea to the next and, at least for me, hangs together in way that feels unified. Maybe because it's hard to avoid the musical fingerprints I leave on the music I make, whether I want to or not." The component parts have this same sense of independence, the essence of Daphni always present over music that is more free-wheeling than it's ever been, almost escaping Snaith's grasp as it tumbles and spirals. "As is often the case when you're working quickly and intuitively, new pieces of equipment played a part" he says. New gear and ways of working meant Snaith was able to sit at the center of the music but let things get away from him a bit more as equipment began to make its own decisions before reeling it back in to suit his purposes, or as he puts it "getting the snake to eat its own tail".

VIOLENZA, MARIA Capelli di Catene LP
French label Kakakids presents the second album by Rome, Italy electro/synth-punk starlette, Maria Violenza. Capelli di Caténe evokes the heavy, beautiful but cumbersome things that you might like to get rid of. Like its title, this new LP intertwines the animosity of one track, with the melancholy or the threats of another track. An attachment that hurts tenderly. The atmosphere of the album smacks of the Sabbath, of a heart torn violently and offered with generosity on the altar of galley, which reminds everyone that fate has a melody. Haunting and familiar, like Cristina's music. Three years have passed since her debut album Scirocco, during which Maria Violenza did a split with Usé, another with Noir Boy George, as well as several projects as varied as his influences.

ABRAMS, MUHAL RICHARD Celestial Birds LP
2022 repress. The compilation Celestial Birds reveals and focuses on the widely unknown electronic compositions of the Association for the Advancement Of Creative Musicians (AACM) founder and jazz pianist, Muhal Richard Abrams. The fifth release in KarlRecords' Perihel Series, curated by zeitkratzer director, Reinhold Friedl. Anybody interested in jazz knows that Chicago has always been an impressive hot spot for new talents -- and still is. One essential landmark in the history and development of jazz was the founding of the AACM in May 1965. This non-profit organization was a melting pot (and starting point) for artists like Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, George Lewis, or Lester Bowie and his Art Ensemble of Chicago but one of its actual founding members is known only to the deep connoisseurs: Muhal Richard Abrams (1930-2017). The autodidact pianist and composer left music school and university, deciding to learn music by himself. From 1961 on, the Experimental Band was his first ensemble, but it soon turned out that Abrams's interests went beyond jazz and that he was open to the avant-garde and new music and most of all: electronic music. Which led to a double problem: On the one hand, black musicians had almost no access to the rare electronic music studios located in and funded by universities or broadcasting corporations. On the other hand, there were strong reservations regarding electronic music in the black music community. In his important book A Power Stranger Than Itself: The A.A.C.M. and American Experimental Music, (2007) George Lewis wrote that "the use of electronics . . . proved controversial and widely misunderstood in a world of jazz in which acoustic instruments became conflated with musical, and eventually, cultural and even racial authenticity." Abrams's response was to actually "hide" his electronic pieces on the B-sides of his albums, and this compilation focuses on some of his best electronic experiments: the 22-minute long epic "The Bird Song" from 1968 in its original version incl. the reverb that was removed on the later CD reissue on Delmark, the synthesizer compositions "Conversations With The Three Of Me" (1989) and "Think All, Focus One" (1995) plus "Spihumonesty" (1980) with a second synthesizer played by George Lewis and Yousef Yancey on theremin. Celestial Birds casts a new light on the underrated experimenter Muhal Richard Abrams, his innovative approach to composition and pieces that lay dormant for way too long. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code.

BAKER & GARETH DAVIS, AIDAN Invisible Cities II LP
2022 repress. Aidan Baker (Nadja, B/B/S) and bass clarinetist Gareth Davis continue their fruitful collaboration with Invisible Cities II, five new tracks of finest ambient/chamber jazz/subtle drones of a highly meditative quality. In 2018, the Canadian guitar player Aidan Baker and clarinetist Gareth Davis from Belgium released their duo debut Invisible Cities (KR 045LP) that surprised many by its quiet, even meditative quality. Davis had made himself a name in a wide range of fields, from the post rock of A-Sun Amissa or Oiseaux-Tempête, new music (Peter Ablinger, Bernhard Lang), or experimentation with the likes of Elliott Sharp, Merzbow, or Scanner, while Baker is mostly known for his drone/post-metal duo Nadja, but that's just one out of several steady projects (e.g. B/B/S with Andrea Belfi and Erik Skodvin aka Svarte Greiner) and a multitude of solo albums. On Invisible Cities, the duo explored the calmer side of things -- from chamber jazz to ambient/drone and back, giving much space and air to breathe to their respective instrument. Subtle guitar drones, sonore clarinet sounds, a sonic scenery of peacefulness, and meditative introspection --all this you'll also find on the new album Invisible Cities II which is an accomplished continuation and refinement of the duo's first collaborative effort from 2018. Recorded between 2018 and 2019 in Berlin and Amsterdam. Mastered and cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin by Kassian Troyer. 180 gram vinyl.

MAXIMIN, BERANGERE Land of Waves 2LP
2022 repress. On her sixth album, the French electroacoustic composer Bérangère Maximin explores the idea of a kaleidoscopic world -- a sonic aggregation of living creatures, plants, minerals, nature, and buildings, using various sound objects, small percussions, synths, electric guitar, voice, and electronics. Working out of her private studio since 2008, Bérangère Maximin has developed her own approach to sound art and electronic music, composing dense, immersive pieces with immediate impact. On five albums -- released to critical acclaim on Tzadik, Sub Rosa, Crammed Discs, and Craig Leon's Atlas Realisations label -- she has revealed a taste for mixing disparate sounds together with a sense of detail, effusive, lyrical playings with the digital material and tight nuanced writing. Bérangère Maximin's music engages the listener in consideration of space and textures, the sound ambivalence and its independence from its original source being at the center of her work. During her career, the French composer has obtained commissions and residencies in National Music Research Centres such as Paris's Ina-GRM, Stockholm's EMS and received a grant from the "Villa Medicis Hors Les Murs" program in New York City (Cultures France). She has performed in notable festivals, venues and concert halls from Paris's Présences Electronique festival, London's Hayward gallery, NYC's Roulette, Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie's e-Phil series to major international festivals in Eastern Europe. Beside her solo performances, she also regularly shares the stage in duo with Fred Frith. Land of Waves: three words evoking territories of plains and curves connected with each other by canals, footpaths, tunnels. The four parts of the album lead the listener into a hybrid land where the jungle meets the city -- a succession of reliefs, surfaces, textures, layers create a large mosaic as if on a concrete wall which seems solid and definitive but is in fact penetrable, alterable. For Land of Waves, Bérangère Maximin took inspiration from recordings she did in various city parks, abandoned properties and limits with the suburbs during her travels in Europe, the diversity of sources, the variations of events and the contrasts between day and night they offered, and reinterpreted them in the studio. 180 gram vinyl, double LP; includes download code.

XENAKIS, IANNIS Electroacoustic Works 5CD BOX
Electroacoustic Works celebrates the 100th anniversary of Iannis Xenakis (on May 29th, 2022). Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) is one of the most important composers of the 20th century avantgarde whose influence on music can be traced to the present day -- not only in the world of conservatory-trained composers but also in various streams of current non-academic underground aesthetics such as experimental electronic music, noise and industrial. After he arrived in Paris in 1947, Xenakis not only studied composition with Messiaen and later became a member of the famous GRM (Groupe de recherches musicales), he also worked as assistant to the famous architect Le Corbusier and realized, amongst others, the Philips Pavilion for the World Exhibition in Brussels 1958. His compositions often are based on mathematical principles which give his music an unprecedented aesthetic and "shocking otherness" (The Guardian). Although Xenakis also composed for orchestra (his most famous works are "Metastasis", "Pithoprakta", and "Terretektorh"), electronic music became his way for exploring new ideas and concepts and to develop new techniques like a graphic interface for sound synthesis or later, when computers were easier accessible, his so-called "stochastic synthesis" (Gendy 3, S.709 > Disc V, Late Works). Xenakis's first electroacoustic pieces, like "Diamorphoses" or "Bohor", turned out groundbreaking works while the latter even caused, as Michel Chion put it, the "greatest scandal of electroacoustic music" on the occasion of its performance 1968 at the GRM in Paris. His so-called "Polytopes" were overwhelming multimedia performances with especially designed architectures, laser and light shows etc. where sometimes up to several hundred loudspeakers were used to move the sounds in space. For example, his most famous composition "Persepolis", commissioned by the Persian Shah, premiered in 1971 in Shiraz-Persepolis (Iran) as a performance including light-tracks, laser beams, groups of children walking around with torches and 59 loudspeakers to project the music in an open-air situation. The most radical aspects of sound can be found in Xenakis's late work and its merciless reduction to harsh, almost ruthless sound synthesis. In the early nineties, he devoted himself to the concept of a composing machine: a machine that designs everything independently and calculates the finished piece, the algorithm is the work. Years of source studies and comparative research by zeitkratzer director Reinhold Friedl, in collaboration with sound engineer Martin Wurmnest, made these critically reflected stereo mixes possible, which were appropriately mastered by Rashad Becker and which, in addition to the aspect of fidelity to the source, put the listener in the center. 5CD box set includes booklet with English/German liner notes by Reinhold Friedl (zeitkratzer) and rare photos from the Xenakis archive.

ZUKIE, TAPPER Bunker Buster LP
LP version. Tapper Zukie after taking a little time out of the musical arena has come back with an album full of great material and has called in an A list of fellow Jamaican artists to add flavor to this great set. As Tapper named the album himself Bunker Buster, it shows Mr Zukie busting back out of the studio and back in the arena in fine style. The opening track finds his long-standing working partner Horace Andy adding his distinctive vocal style to "Aquarius". "Nuh Fraid A Dem" features the great Luciano, "The Blessings" the mighty Michael Rose, and Little Roy adds some magical rhymes to "Wicked". The soulful voice of Beres Hammond sweetens the effects of "Stress". The killer title track "Buster Bunker" is backed up by the Musical Intimidators and Tapper has reworked his "Good Luck My Friend" track to "Lucky Friend" which features the timeless backing vocals by the legendary Jamaican vocal group The Tamlins. Digging even deeper into his back catalog he has also pulled up some classic rhythms and more existing vocals to rework over. For example, "The Light In Me" features the greatly missed Ronnie Davis. Junior Rass adds his mighty roar to "Humble Lion" and Junior Reid leads the charge on "Warrior". Half Pint adds a musical layer to "Flesh and Blood". All in all, a great selection of musical ideas that also features the cream of Jamaica's musicians, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, Flabba Holt, Chinna Smith to name but a few. Tapper's son Noel Barnes (AKA Brand New) alongside Pam Hall adds some gloss. Such is his standing in the reggae community that a call out to Jamaica's finest set of singers and their eager reply to add their talents has made this an album not to be missed and can sit proudly alongside and find a place in his already prodigious catalog.

EUSEBEIA Cosmos EP 12"
The latest release on Livity Sound features an extensive insight into the work of Seb Uncles, aka Eusebeia. Uncles has been releasing his work prolifically over the past six years, from self-released tapes on Rebellion Electronics through to reams of 12"s and LPs for labels like Earthtrax, Western Lore, Rupture London, and re:st. While his sound has often tilted towards drum & bass and jungle, he places atmosphere and composition ahead of genre boundaries and tempo restrictions. Cosmos EP finds Uncles stretching out over eight varied tracks for a broader experience compared to the usual Livity EP. Glacial ambience and richly layered synthesis guides the record overall, at times leaving drums behind altogether, but even at its mellowest you can sense the overbearing bias towards soundsystem music. The melancholic electronica of "Becoming" gets underpinned by dread bass, and "Solace" places a haunting steppas-esque refrain in the midst of heavily dubbed downtempo. When he does turn to full-tilt drumfunk edits on the likes of "Hopes + Dreams" and "Love + Light", he approaches them with subtlety and finesse, matching rhythmic flair with melodic progressions which lend themselves to introspective listening as much as full dancefloor immersion.

The Communards' sophomore album Red consolidated the genius of the musical partnership between Bronski Beat singer Jimmy Somerville and pianist Richard Coles. BEHRMAN, DAVID On The Other Ocean CD
2022 restock of the original CD version; recently awarded: 9.0 Best New Reissue on Pitchfork, Originally released on Lovely Music in 1978. David Behrman's On The Other Ocean is an improvisation by Maggi Payne and Arthur Stidfole centered around six pitches which, when they are played, activate electronic pitch-sensing circuits connected to the "interrupt" line and input ports of a microcomputer, Kim-1. The microcomputer can sense the order and timing in which the six pitches are played and can react by sending harmony-changing messages to two handmade music synthesizers. The relationship between the two musicians and the computer is an interactive one, with the computer changing the electronically-produced harmonies in response to what the musicians play, and the musicians influenced in their improvising by what the computer does. Figure In A Clearing, made a few months before On The Other Ocean, was the first piece of Behrman's to use a computer for music. For Figure, the Kim-1 ran a program which varied the time intervals between chord changes. The time intervals were modelled on the motion of a satellite in falling elliptical orbit about a planet. David Gibson's only "score" was a list of six pitches to be used in performance, and a request that he not speed up when the computer-controlled rhythm did. The timbral richness and concentrated eloquence of his playing sprang from his own sources. Personnel: David Behrman - electronics, Kim-1 microcomputer; Maggi Payne - flute; Arthur Stidfole - bassoon; David Gibson - cello. Recording engineers: "Blue" Gene Tyranny and Richard Lainhart. Charming booklet notes by David Behrman.

UMILIANI, PIERO Fried Bananas (Re-edit) 7"
2022 marks the release of a new single by maestro Piero Umiliani. The music of Umiliani, composer of over one hundred and fifty soundtracks as well as of the immortal "Mah Nà Mah Nà", is one of the absolute heritages of Italian musical history and, thanks to the commitment of DJs from all over the world and specialized labels, continues to surprise and to always be rediscovered. The latest extraordinary novelty that sees him as the protagonist is a new 45rpm, entitled "Fried Bananas". The song written in 1975 for a sounding album released in very few copies and never reissued, has a very current disco rhythm with lounge and funk veins and is destined to become an immediate cult among fans and collectors. The release, co-produced by DJ Frankie Fortyfive and the crew of Maledetta Discoteca, presents the original song and a re-edited version on the B-side by DJs Keedoman, Enzo Pietanza, and DJ Arnold Maddaloni. The piece sounds very current, the re-edit by Keedoman, Enzo Pietanza and DJ Arnold Maddaloni renews it respecting its essence and original musicality and, twenty years after his death, maestro Piero Umiliani is more alive than ever.

SANDERS, PHAROAH Moon Child LP
Restocked. "To celebrate the 45th anniversary of iconic Dutch jazz label Timeless Records, Music On Vinyl is releasing a series that features albums that are part of the Timeless Records legacy and will be released mainly throughout 2022. Part of this series is Pharoah Sanders' Moon Child from 1990, which bookended a decade of musical soul searching for Sanders. The acclaimed free jazz player is known to have a raw and abrasive sound, but reinvented himself on this album as a more traditional improviser capable of thoughtful deliberations. Moon Child is a grand old time throughout, and Sanders has never been more eminently sing-along-able as he is on its title track. The record was co-written with Horace Silver, George Gershwin and Abdullah Ibrahim and recorded with William Henderson, Stafford James, Eddie Moore and Cheikh Tidiane Fall. Moon Child is available on black vinyl."

ALVA NOTO + RYUICHI SAKAMOTO Summvs (Remaster) CD
Released for the first time in 2011, Summvs is the fifth and final installment of Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto's V.I.R.U.S. series. The title Summvs refers to the Latin word "summa" (sum) and "versus" (towards); it serves as a metaphor for the work being oriented towards a collaborative result. The album features "Microon" compositions containing recordings of a 16th tone interval tuning piano -- Piano Metamorfoseador Carrillo en Dieciseisavos de Tono. The album also features two covers of the track "By This River," composed by Brian Eno, Dieter Moebius, and Hans-Joachim Roedelius in 1977. In the album's twelve compositions, Sakamoto's haunting piano arrangements coalesce with Carsten Nicolai's digital rhythms, creating a sonic aura as magnetic as it is meditative. Remastered in 2021 in collaboration with Calyx Studio, the album's recordings are accompanied by two new compositions titled "Monomom" (released digitally in December 2021) and "Kizuna." Like "Monomom," "Kizuna" is the studio version of the homonymous composition recorded during Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto's 2019 Australian tour and included in the album' TWO Live at Sydney Opera House (2019). The work "Kizuna" means "human bond" in Japanese and refers to the title of an animation piece by the Italian contemporary artist Valerio Berruti released in Japan in January 2011. Album art designed by Carsten Nicolai. Mastering by Bo at Calyx.

TRONDHEIM JAZZ ORCHESTRA & OLE MORTEN VAGAN Plastic Wave LP
LP version. Plastic Wave comes as the sequel to 2018's celebrated Happy Endlings, where Ole Morten Vågan, one of the most sought-after bass players in Norway, collaborated with the unpredictable and creative Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, comprised of a sort of "who's who" in Norwegian jazz. Where Happy Endlings took the listener on a 72-minute-long ride on the edge of their seat through a myriad of innovation, chock, and surprises, Plastic Wave sees TJO and Vågan take their mischievous end time antics from the previous album to the next phase, in some sorts a musical excavation of the next evolutionary step -- and the sequel is no less than 12 minutes longer. Titles such as "Food Chain Reaction" and "Critical Mass Distraction" are given extra momentum by Flu Hartberg's cover art, again a trusty companion for the music. Having been recorded halfway through 2020, the music on Plastic Wave plays well against this unprecedented backdrop, the music on Plastic Wave plays well against this unprecedented backdrop, and elements like a sudden cameo by poet Frode Grytten places the music even further into the context of our time.

ISAACS, GREGORY The Best Of Gregory Isaacs Vol. 2 LP
2022 repress "... Isaacs kicks off the set with his declaration of independence, 'No Footstool,' but a quartet of militant cultural numbers -- a fierce 'A Riot,' a simmering 'Jailer,' a heartfelt 'Village of the Under Privileged' and the powerful return-to-Africa-themed 'Border' -- fuels this set. All are classic Isaacs, with the latter featuring the sublime harmonies of the Tamlins, who backed the singer on both these sets. Intercut between these cultural masterpieces are equally superb romantic offerings, notably the evocative 'Once Again' and the gorgeous 'Tumbling Tears,' the latter another massive hit. Like its predecessor, this is no career-spanning best-of set, but a superb album that does indeed include much of Isaacs' best work with Ranglin during the mid-'70s." --JoAnn Greene (All Music Guide)

REVOLUTIONARIES Roots Man Dub LP
2022 repress. "In 1979, Alvin 'GG' Ranglin released the Roots Man Dub album on his GG's label, comprised of ten titled and two untitled tracks drawn from a variety of sources -- singles from GG's, Swaby's Ja-Man and Manzie labels, and the Hookim brothers' Hit Bound label among them. The common denominator is the Revolutionaries, who provided all the riddims. The final three tracks (plus all of disc two of the reissue) are comprised of previously unreleased dubs, again drawn from a variety of labels' releases and featuring both Ranglin and Swaby productions. The set doesn't identify which are which, and only a few dates are provided, but it's obvious which numbers were recorded in the roots era, with the superb riddims supplied by the Revolutionaries, the Roots Radics, and GG's All-Stars. The first disc is by far the most sumptuous in sound, awash in rich, organic dubs that are laced with melodies and virtually vocal-free. In contrast, the second disc features 'dubbier' dubs, all more rhythm-driven, reverb- and echo-laden, and with snippets of vocals (mostly from George Faith and Tony Tuff) feeding throughout. Played back to back it's difficult to believe they're from the same producers, and one is tempted to credit Ranglin with the first disc and Swaby with the second, but one would be wrong. Instead, the shift in sound presumably reflects the shift in styles between the mid-'70s and early '80s. A fabulous set and a boon for reggae fans, but like so many dub albums, Roots Man Dub leaves one desperate for more background information." -- Jo-Ann Greene (All Music Guide)

PROLAPSE Pointless Walks To Dismal Places 2LP
Deluxe reissue of their Prolapse's debut album, Pointless Walks To Dismal Places, originally released in 1994. Completely remastered under band supervision. Combining a metronomic krautrock beat played by a monster drummer, looping guitars, and a boy/girl vocal that sounded like a bickering bed-sit argument turned into song, Prolapse had all the manic intensity of a nervous breakdown set against a backdrop of inventive guitar work and a really tough rhythm section. There were hints of the Fall, krautrock, PiL, and a touch of the pure golden pop of Blondie along with the sense of restless dislocation shared by many of the post-punk bands. Prolapse arrived in the middle of the Britpop era and their tense, almost neurotic music clashed with the stadium-filling, jolly knees-up pop that dominated the indie mainstream of the time. By 1996, indie had become the mainstream in terms of record sales and sound and was strutting around at the opposite end of the cultural spectrum to the indie bands of the '80s and their war against popular culture. Late arrivals Prolapse were the last gasp of this genuine independence. Features the original LP plus a bonus disc with the Cherry Red EP tracks, plus a 16-page booklet containing photos, reviews, and sleeve notes from Mick Derrick, Steve Mack, and John Robb. Burgundy vinyl; gatefold matte laminated sleeve with spot UV varnish.

XT Deorlaf X LP
New music from XT (saxophone player Seymour Wright and percussionist Paul Abbott) in the form of an exhilarating, super compressed, reflective re-assembling of a dozen years working together. Re-animating free improvisation with a Chicago house palette, Deorlaf X is made up of frenetic slabs of mutated multiphonics and triggered percussion, suspended in bouts of possessed reflexive quiet. Where the duo's 2019 release Palina'tufa (EE 004LP) on Empty Editions focused primarily on a response to the real (and imagined) landscapes of Hong Kong, Deorlaf X is located in Dalston, and specifically at OTO. Wrung through Shuan Crook's studio over three nights, the recordings dug from XT's archive aren't simply "duo" -- instead they actively draw on their public and social contexts, involving the influence of audience, engineers and other visiting musicians -- Ghédalia Tazartès, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Senyawa, RP Boo, and others. "A changing cast of OTO guests, audience and emotions hosted each time in a new London. XT structures sound an ongoing attempt to listen and learn about the rich and transformative affordances of the situations we occupy." The resulting record puts a pin through a dialogue between Abbott and Wright, between histories, potentials, fact, fiction, ideas, friends, audiences, and spaces. The heavy use of referencing recalls the footwork or house traditions of sampling across all manner of influences; what's recalled is primarily the structures of jazz -- Ornette Coleman, Charlie Parker, Anthony Braxton -- but also Ann Quin, Clarice Lispector, Anna Halprin. What's created in recall is a kind of diary, a hyper remembering -- a blisteringly warped kind of future music. Recorded by James Dunn, Shaun Crook and Paul Skinner. Assembled, mixed and re-recorded January 19, 20, and 21, 2020 by XT at Lockdown Studio, Cable Street. Engineer Shaun Crook. Sounds/design by XT. Cover painting Leon Kossoff, Dalston Junction No.3, June 1973 oil on board, 20.5 x 25 cm.

LEE/JEROME NOETINGER/NADIA RATSIMANDRESY, OKKYUNG Two Duos LP
Two Duos is pressed from cellist Okkyung Lee's most recent OTO Residency; the first side a duo with Jérôme Noetinger on Revox B77 and the second with Nadia Ratsimandresy on Ondes Martenot. Cut together, the two meetings seem to raise three cellos in the search for expressive voice: the cello, it's magnetic reproduction, and the dual controls of the machine invented to expand on its musical qualities. On the A side Noetinger's opening tape hiss establishes a current; an electrical partner who gives Lee room to slide across and stretch out. Progressively the cello is returned, duplicated and manipulated with increased velocity and distortion. Noetinger draws out the full extent of Lee's extended technique; rewinding strands of Lee's horse hair and transmuting her percussive attacks into shuddering echoes, before letting his own concrete interjections spin the duo's sonic tussle into an almost romantic daydream. On side B the ondes (invented by French cellist and wartime radio operator Maurice Eugene Louis Martenot and so loved by Bernard Parmegiani, Varese, and Messiaen) seems shaken from classical tradition and those long, drawn out horrorscapes it has come to be associated with. In a duel with Lee, Ratsimandresy grasps the ondes's extraordinary capacity for dexterity, nuance, and speed, hounding Lee's cello in a bid to drive her instrument out of the past and into the future. Two fantastic pairings and a testament to the freshness with which Lee and her collaborators continue to work with their instruments. Personnel: Okkyung Lee - cello; Jérôme Noetinger - Revox B77; Nadia Ratsimandresy - Ondes Martenot. Recorded live at Cafe OTO. Mixed and mastered by Lasse Marhaug. Design by Maja Larrson.

GIRLS IN SYNTHESIS The Rest Is Distraction (Grey Vinyl) LP
LP version. Grey vinyl. Experimental post-punk outfit Girls In Synthesis are set to release the eagerly anticipated follow-up to 2020's incendiary debut, Now Here's An Echo From Your Future (HARB 206CD/LP/S-LP). Entitled The Rest Is Distraction and available via the band's own label Own It, its mix of fractured guitar, crushing drums and bass, intense vocals and lyrical content create as challenging a record as you will hear this year. Formed in 2016, Girls In Synthesis are John Linger (bass, vocals), Jim Cubitt (guitar, keys), and Nicole Pinto (drums). The trio's double A-sided debut single The Mound/Disappear came out in the early part of 2017, and since then they have established themselves as the most forward thinking, viscerally challenging band around with unmissable live shows that continue to excite and astound in equal measure. Recorded last year amidst the uncertainty of continuous lockdowns as a result of the global Covid-19 pandemic, The Rest Is Distraction is far darker in content than its predecessor. Mainly exploring internal and mental struggles as opposed to external current affairs, it focuses on the claustrophobia of emotional anguish and continues to bravely delve into previously un-ventured topics. Featuring frequent collaborators funkcutter and Stanley Bad on horns and violin, respectively, two songs also see Eleni Poulou, ex-The Fall, on keyboards. The album was mixed by long-term collaborator Max Walker and features stunning landscape photography by Bea Dewhurst. The album was mastered in France by Ayumu Matsuo. Sonically atramentous and less one dimensional than the band's debut, The Rest Is Distraction takes its cues from Join Hands-era Siouxsie & The Banshees, Brainiac and Crass's Christ The Album, among others. From the first crackle of electricity on the opening track, to the heart wrenching taped voice-recording on the final outro, this album triumphantly retains every ounce of intensity and vitality that makes Girls In Synthesis the most captivating band to emerge from the UK DIY underground in recent years. Listeners will find The Rest Is Distraction a challenging, yet ultimately cathartic listen. Prepare yourselves for a sonic cleansing, Girls In Synthesis style. RIPATTI DELUXE Speed Demon LP
Sasu Ripatti, aka Vladislav Delay, now sporting the new Ripatti Deluxe moniker, presents his very own abstract take on early rave and happy hardcore. Speed Demon marks the first release on Vladislav Delay's newly launched label, Rajaton. The Finnish word "raja" has multiple meanings. It could refer to a "border", "limit", "boundary", or even "capacity" if understood broadly. It feels that "border" is the first interpretation that comes to mind when the word is met in isolation of additional context. It often includes political energy of some sort. Or perhaps it's just this particular point in time that leads the mind into such field of thought. As the Dutch author Rutger Bregman notes in his book Humankind: A Hopeful History, the real trouble with people began when the first person had the idea of drawing a line on sand and claiming ownership of the area on their side. The concept of physical borders was born. Naturally, there are mental borders, as well. Think about all the things you shut out because they're "not for you". They are numerous and we do it all the time. The issue is not to stop that, but to recognize when to let new things in, even if they're not commonplace. Mental borders might often be easier to rewrite than physical ones, but the challenge remains a real one. That's where the derivative form "rajaton" comes to play. By simply adding the "-ton", all borders, limits, boundaries and capacities are lifted in an instant. We have something "borderless" instead, and are thus free to expand our thinking. One could argue that the word "rajaton" implies not the removal of borders but instead their very non-existence at large. How will our mind work when the concept of borders doesn't even enter the conscious thought? Mental borderless-ness is a truly fascinating concept. A maximalist array of opportunities and potential ideas enters the picture -- one which is also limitless, unlimited, sans boundaries, and also without a danger of being depleted. It's an all-existence of multitudes where hierarchy also starts to deteriorate, giving way to a new form of full understanding without judgement. Music is one fine place for such thinking, especially when thinking about the role of the listener. Occupying a much more active position than is generally recognized, the listener can greatly benefit from borderless thinking, and thus help to enhance the collective perceived significance of any given body of work. As the late revolutionary jazz pianist Burton Greene: "Borders are boring!"

SENYAWA + LAWRENCE ENGLISH/AVIVA ENDEAN/PETER KNIGHT/HELEN SVOBODA/JOE TALIA The Prey and The Ruler CD
From Lawrence English: "The first time I witnessed Senyawa was in the early 2010s. We shared a bill at the MonaFoma festival in Hobart. Some memories hold strongly in your mind and Senyawa's performance that day did just that . . . This project, The Prey and the Ruler, finds its root in the unsteady months of mid-2021. As the pandemic plodded onward, and lockdowns were a thing of the everyday here in Australia, Peter Knight and I were talking about the situations unfolding in our respective states. We also got to talking about friends in the region and found ourselves pondering the situation just north of us, in Indonesia. It was around this time we thought to reach out to Rully and Wukir from Senyawa and to hear how things were first hand for them, and their communities. Following that initial conversation, we collectively decided that it was a good moment to commence a project that could cut through the geographic isolation of those long months, and also seek to create some opportunities for a community of instrument builders, friends of Senyawa, who had been significantly hit by the force of the pandemic. A few weeks after this exchange, Wukir sent a series of videos; grabs from his cellphone. The videos were of plastic molds, smoke, spray paint, and sound. In each short clip, instruments were being conceived, tested and forged. These were new instruments coming to life before our eyes, and ears. It was these instruments, and the audio possibilities they suggested, that are at the very heart of this edition. Following several more exchanges we started passing recordings to one another. The process of sharing materials back and forth quickly took on the shape of the works you hear on this album. Once all the contributions were in place, I set about forging them. On the first listen there was a deep sense of intensity to all the performances, like an outpouring or eruption. This was no doubt the result of people being largely locked away, a chance to break the looping around of their own daily routines. These sonic offerings from Senyawa, these instruments with their sounds so unfamiliar and at times unexpected, seemingly unlocked approaches from everyone in surprising ways. It was as if everyone was leaning into the sounds, applying themselves to the particular qualities of these new instruments. What you hear on this edition then is a collective effort at expanded listening..."

DUBFIRE EVOLV 5LP BOX
Dubfire announces his debut solo album on his SCI+TEC imprint. With a career spanning over three decades, Dubfire has achieved global success as an artist with relentless drive, talent, and intuition. Pioneering commercial notoriety came initially as one half of the Grammy award (2001) winning duo Deep Dish, before embarking on a truly groundbreaking solo career in 2007. A career filled with timeless tracks include his early works "Ribcage" (2007), "Emissions" (2007), "Roadkill" (2007) and the highly acclaimed "Exit" (2014) a debut collaboration with Miss Kitten. EVOLV is a visionary trip into the mind of Dubfire to be released on his long-standing label SCI+TEC. It's concept? The journey of the "hybrid" being and its evolution, which kicks off with "Dark Matter" and "Dust & Gas" set a brooding atmosphere. The rougher percussion, and eerie lead in "Dark Matter" is accompanied by a stripped-back sound and glitchy vocals sitting in a spaced-out atmosphere in "Dust & Gas". Its deep and minimal drum work is exceptional. "Escape", a deep, dark and pulsating track that sets the tone for the body of work on the album. Coupled with "Elevation" and it's understated arp and crisp percussion for the second single. "Bottom Dweller" give you two different versions, the original is straight forward, yet effective for a late-night head down cut, where the "Meltdown Mix" takes a minimal path, and faster pace. "Swerve" sees Dubfire return to that stripped-back sound with heavy swinging percussion, a landmark and much-loved element in his music. Sonically, the journey so far has been like a dystopian landscape, but "Decent" brings a kaleidoscope of color and sound before dropping into the "CHALLNGR" duo. "CHALLNGR 1.1" is perhaps the most contemporary track on the album. Dubfire picks up the rhythm for a full-on dancefloor focused track. It's no-nonsense techno at its best, with heaps of pure energy. Two versions appear on the album, "CHALLNGR 1.2" retains the BPM but reigns in the percussion with a snappier approach and a more euphoric warped effect. As music evolves, so does Dubfire. EVOLV is a special project from this pioneering producer showing his interpretation of techno in his own unique vision. Five-LP boxset; matte with front UV spot varnish.

VA Poesia Sonora LP
2022 restock; last copies/reduced price. Song Cycle Records present a reissue of Poesia Sonora, originally released in 1975. Sound poetry emerged in the early years of the post-war avant-garde and pioneered phonetic art forms that explored the relationship between human speech and sound, experimental music and structures of language. Affiliated to concrete poetry, fluxus, minimalism, conceptual and performance art, the first generation of sound poets questioned the meanings of "music" and "poetry" using interferences as source of new phonetic art patterns/compositions. Poesia Sonora represents one of the first international sound poetry compilations. The record came out in 1975 for CBS under the label "Recorthings & Zona Archives", curated and edited by Maurizio Nannucci. The anthology collects pieces by some of the most important pioneers of the sound poetry movement: Bob Cobbing, François Dufrêne, Henri Chopin, Ernst Jandl, Franz Mon, Arthur Pétronio, Arrigo Lora-Totino, Brion Gysin, Bernard Heidsieck, Sten Hanson, Maurizio Nannucci, Paul De Vree. Poesia Sonora is an indispensable reference anthology that sensitizes the ear for extraordinary pieces/compositions of sound and literary experiments. Released in collaboration with Maurizio Nannucci. Fluorescent artwork; Limited edition clear vinyl (hand-numbered).

WESTLAKE, DAVID My Beautiful England LP
LP version. The release of NME's C86 cassette heralded a new generation of artists who'd emerged since the preceding C81 assembled a set of acts who'd coaxed new dialects out of punk, rhythms, reggae and the avant-garde. What of another of the best from C86 -- the Servants, David Westlake's band Ambivalent about the invitation to be on C86, Westlake gave the NME a wrong-footing B-side, before keeping a distance from the noise around the compilation. Subsequent releases from Westlake and The Servants and Westlake attracted fine reviews but settled quietly into relative obscurity, despite musical involvement from various Housemartins, Go-Betweens, and Triffids, a quest by Stuart from Belle & Sebastian to find Westlake and form a band; not to mention Luke Haines's own five-year presence in the Servants before forming The Auteurs, Baader Meinhof, and Black Box Recorder. Westlake went first into the law, then spent years in literary academia. Now the surprise arrival of My Beautiful England. The album is a masterpiece of concept, composition and performance, a conceptual work of truths and reflections of difficult but deft and unflinching expression. "It is not only fashionable now to denigrate England and its past; it is heresy to recognize good in it. The place that made me is disappearing. Its values and traditions. Among them: good manners, humility and clemency, resilience and perseverance, good humor. History is being refashioned -- in spirit and material fact -- by ideologues unshakably certain they are in the right, and people are being distanced from their pasts. Some find themselves forced into passive acceptance of new distortions of the past, out of imitativeness or cowardice. I resist. This album is a memorial. Intentionally, a museum piece. It is a personal tribute to the England I knew."

NIGHTINGALES The Last Laugh LP
LP version. Revisiting a press release for the Nightingales' last album, Four Against Fate, Tiny Global Productions recalled hesitant anticipation for the forthcoming King Rocker, a film documentary of Robert Lloyd and Nightingales, made by Michael Cumming and Stewart Lee. After forty years of activity, Robert and the band had seen hyped recordings go lost, scant commercial success. Royalties? Ha. Yet response to King Rocker was immediately positive. Fab reviews galore, a long process regaining master rights which led to a series of expanded reissues with Fire. A tour postponed three times finally took place, to fully-packed houses. It was a very good year. The band felt a degree of anxiety prior to the sessions, which took place at Valencia's Elefante Studios. With bassist Andi Schmid isolated during Covid, the band had yet begun working out individual rough sketches, typically battered into songs over a period of months. They went into a new studio blind, with a new producer, Jorge Bernabe, without rehearsals . . . and produced a top-to-bottom masterpiece. Thirty seconds in, "Sunlit Uplands", is already a classic showcasing Fliss Kitson's increased songwriting power and the core dichotomy of the group's best songs: perverse as fuck, catchy as fuck. "I 3 CCTV" is highlighted by a fab Jim Smith astral-garage guitar riff . . . and that's a one-two punch few albums ever equal, let alone carry over to the affectionate "Frances Sokolov", Robert's ode to mentor Vi Subversa, the playground riff that underlines "Spread Yourself Out" and then "Bloody Breath", the best encapsulation of all the band's genius in developing a kind of "pop" that no other combo has ever cracked. Other highlights include the lopsided mysterious beauty of "Magical Left Foot", the courtly raver of "I Need The Money At The Time" with a wonderful motorik groove driven by bassist Andi Schmid, and the album closer, "My Sweet Friend", a rockabilly lullaby which sounds like a magical outtake from Robert's one and only solo album It's a corker, it's a marvel, it's the best Nightingales record to date. Try and deny it.

MAEDON-X (MAEDON & ADAM X) The Lion & The Ram 2x12"
Tresor Records reveal the outcome of a new collaboration between two of techno music's most remarkable artists, Maedon and Adam X. The Lion & The Ram is a unique and exciting hybrid of industrial, rave, and hypnotic techno sounds. This release marks the full debut for both artists on Tresor Records, with Adam X having appeared for a remix of Neil Landstrumm in 1997. Both Berlin-based, Maedon and Adam X have worked tirelessly over the forced lockdowns, finding a kindred spirit in locating and sculpting the most badass kick. This album is undoubtedly an impressive representation of the range of kick drum synthesis, from thunderous impacts to carefully tuned pulses. The duo's competitiveness over kick drums has led to a masterpiece of mesmerizing techno. Across the thumping drums and sparse, mechanical soundscapes, every track on the album follows a journey into the dark and unknown. Tracks grow with increasing power sourced from dystopian samples, such as "Human Replacements", "people are being duplicated, there is something missing". It reflects the stifled time we all spent, haunted by uncertainty, cooped up and seeking expression. "Corrupt Pigs" emphasizes this with the refrain, "welcome to the land of fuck". Crunching bass and rusty percussions gather as a herd, like a rallying call to signify that, at last, we may let loose. With its unrepentant rhythms and ruthlessly brutal sound design, The Lion & The Ram discharges Maedon and Adam X into daring new terrain. 180 gram vinyl; full printed sleeve.

VALLE, MARCOS Marcos Valle LP
2022 repress. Vampisoul present a reissue of Marcos Valle's 1983 self-titled album. Valle is one of the few artists one cannot miss if one has the slightest interest in Brazilian music. Whether one's taste is focused on bossa jazz, samba, psych folk or soul, Valle has surely recorded an album to match. By the late '60s he had already put out enough quality records to secure a place within the top Brazilian songwriters of all time, but his career did not stop there and he continued releasing amazing music over the following decades. He settled in Los Angeles in the mid-70s, tired of living under Brazil's military dictatorship, and started to collaborate with such talented artists as Leon Ware and Chicago. This LP from 1983 is the follow-up to the great Vontade De Rever Você (1981), his second album after moving back to Brazil. It shows all the music influences from his US years, especially boogie, soul and funk, and features stellar collaborators in Lincoln Olivetti, Robson Jorge, and Leon Ware. The opening track, the Brazilian boogie anthem "Estrelar," is Valle's biggest hit from the '80s and one of the most celebrated songs, making clear that what he accomplished while in LA would now make its way into Brazil. Valle pictures a beach lifestyle and summertime vibe across the entire album that describes his surfing days in Southern California. A couple of early Valle's classic songs are updated here to sit nicely next to soaring disco, killer vocal boogie numbers, and blissing instrumentals, making a well-balanced track list that satisfies both listening pleasure and dancefloor needs. This is an essential album for lovers of the work of Ware, who is the co-writer of three songs in the LP, including "Estrelar," first drafted when both artists were working together in the States and then recorded again when Valle returned to Brazil. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl.

SMALL SUR Attic Room LP
Attic Room is Bob Keal's fifth full-length album as Small Sur. In this collection of songs, Keal meditates on the rhythms of domestic life and fatherhood while discovering newfound depths and maturity in his songwriting. Attic Room emerged from hundreds of song fragments that Keal scratched into the margins of life since the release of 2013's Labor. The result is a "bedroom country" record, one that is inescapably intimate while also evoking the wide-open Midwestern landscapes of Keal's childhood. The bulk of Keal's delicate vocals and classical guitar work was recorded in the basement choir room of a chapel on his school's campus, with Matthew O'Connell (Chorusing) engineering and accompanying on grand piano and Telecaster. As a player, engineer, and co-producer, O'Connell helped to craft a cohesive avant-folk album aesthetic, creating tape dub of instrumental tracks and running saxophone takes through a half-broken Echoplex tape delay, all the while creating sounds that Keal would not have encountered otherwise. Small Sur's music has always been spare, intimate, and deeply felt. But with the stripping of the conventional full-band structure, Keal was able to invite in even more community, while still creating a minimalist and personal sound. Attic Room includes Small Sur's Andy Abelow (saxophone) and Will Ryerson (bass), as well as guests like North Carolina fiddler Joseph DeCosimo, pedal steel guitarist Dave Hadley, and singer Cara Beth Satalino of Outer Spaces. Keal trusted Wye Oak and Joyero's Andy Stack, a long-time collaborator, to process his numerous instrumental contributions however he liked.
