ARAB STRAP Philophobia 2LP
2022 repress. "Philophobia, Arab Strap's sophomore slam dunk released in the spring of 1998, begins with one of the most memorable opening lines in all of indie rock: 'It was the biggest cock you'd ever seen, but you've no idea where that cock has been.' So begins an album that, while picking up thematically where the duo's debut album The Week Never Starts Round Here left off, promises from its very first seconds a renewed sense of purpose: the narratives are more streamlined, the music more confident and mature. Gone are the sketches and doodles that unquestionably distinguished 1996's The Week Never Starts Round Here as the work of first timers, replaced with a consistent, almost conceptual, musical framework. On Philophobia, singer and lyricist Aidan Moffat's realism is more profane, gritty and poignant, while multi-instrumentalist Malcolm Middleton's honeyed orchestrations increasingly provide clinics in subtlety and restraint. Part of the appeal of Arab Strap's post-everything music is the way the group's songs make every listener feel like either a voyeur or a trusted confidante. The ever-present humanity in future sex advice columnist Moffat's first person tales of debauchery and regret is a through-line running through each of these frank and vivid songs: the same narrator who confesses to sniffing his fingers after a sexual encounter and boasts about the size of his penis also yearns to 'hug' a lover to death, finds himself crying on the bus, and wonders idly -- but hopefully -- whether or not he's truly in love with the woman he's just slept with. It is this duality, complemented by Middleton's imaginative and deeply sensitive accompaniment, that makes Philophobia one of the most original and most enduring front-to-back albums in the canon of modern indie rock; over two decades later, it still sounds warm to the touch."

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Who Killed Sgt. Pepper? 2LP
2022 repress; gatefold 2LP version. 2010 release. Recorded in early and late 2009 between Iceland & Berlin with a U.S. tour in between, The Brian Jonestown Massacre moved forward with this full-length album , Who Killed Sgt. Pepper?. Working with musicians Will Carruthers (ex-Spacemen 3 & Spiritualized), Unnur Andrea Einarsdottir and Felix from the Russian band Amazing Electronic Talking Cave and other musicians from France, Germany, and Iceland, this is the band's most multi-cultural release to date, while obviously keeping the band's trademark style throughout this album. Thirteen tracks ranging from ambient bhangra beats to rock to shoegazing, to gypsy influences of Eastern European music, and then back again to the subliminal, all twinged with the psychedelia of the band.

GOLDSTEIN, MALCOLM Early Electronic/Tape Collage Music LP
2022 restock. "Alga Marghen proudly presents an LP edition including some of the seminal electronic/tape collage pieces by Malcolm Goldstein, created in close connection to the sulphuric New York pre-Fluxus environment of the early 1960s. The 1960s downtown New York City, rich with activities, doors opening upon a world fertile with possibilities: the delightful unknown. Malcolm Goldstein first worked at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, then joined the Judson Dance Theater with dancers, musicians, poets, and visual artists all interacting in the common ground of improvisation/exploration. Most of the music on this recording was created for the Judson Dance Theater, 'Sheep Meadow' (1966), a collage of two musics, folk & court music, was realized on a very cheap single tape recorder that offered its own electronic distortion embellishments. It was created for an anti-war demonstration to be held in that meadow of Central Park, with a dancer on top of a flat-bed truck and with loudspeakers. 'Images Of Cheng Hsieh' (1967) was for a dance by Carol Marcy at Judson Church, simultaneously with an instrumental ensemble performing from the calligraphic graphic score, with the name of Cheng Hsieh. 'It Seemed To Me' (1963) was composed for a dance by Arlene Rothlein; a collage of traditional musics chosen by her to be incorporated with electronic sounds. 'Judson #6 Piece' (1963) was for Ruth Emerson, using only electronic sounds. Finally 'Illuminations From Fantastic Gardens' (1964), the only composition for a vocal ensemble on this recording, was composed for Elaine Summers' 'An Evening of Fantastic Gardens,' a multi-media event of dance, music, film and visual projections, as part of the Judson Dance Theater concerts. It is the first music notated by Malcolm Goldstein with graphic renditions of the words of Rimbaud and without traditional music notation. Two performers were trained singers, while the others were a visual artist and an actor; two women & two men, all in the spirit of the times, sources coming together, as art & life blended in an overflowing of exploration. Edition limited to 350 copies, also including a 12-page large booklet with the reproduction of the complete 'Illuminations From Fantastic Gardens' graphic score."

ASHLEY, ROBERT String Quartet.../How Can I Tell The Difference CD
2022 restock. "String Quartet Describing the Motions of Large Real Bodies" was composed as the potential orchestra for an opera-based on the text of In Sara, Mencken, Christ and Beethoven There Were Men And Women." When the work was composed in 1972, it was clear that a huge change in electronic instrumentation was just beginning, a change that would involve computers and sound-producing devices as yet undreamed-of. The piece consists of an electronic orchestra of 42 sound-producing modules. The technique of the string quartet is for each player to make a stream of intentional but unpremeditated (that is, random) very short sounds, pulses, somewhat like pitched clicks, but with the formats and overtones of a string instrument (this idea came from the rumor of a performance by Takehisa Kosugi). These sounds go directly to a set of four loudspeakers, but at the same time they are delayed electronically, and those delayed sounds are sent to a series of seven networks of sound-producing modules activated by the very brief coincidence of an original sound and a delayed sound. The operation of the networks as a result of the coincidence can, in the theoretical world of electronics, produce almost any sound imaginable. In the performance recorded here, few of the technical resources were available. Now, of course, there are computer "patching" programs that would make the job possible, but complicated. Such are dreams, when technology promises a "new world." Sort of like 1492. The hills and mountains separating San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean are filled with a labyrinth of endless concrete tunnels constructed by the military in the 1930s in anticipation of World War II, to defend San Francisco Bay from invasion. At the entrance of every tunnel is a huge steel door. When the door is slammed, the reverberation through the labyrinth seems to last forever. It is one of the wonders of the world. Naturally, Robert Ashley tried to record this phenomenon. On the occasion of the recording, just as the reverberation seemed to die away, a motorcyclist, miles away in the tunnels, started coming closer. The effect, which took minutes, was as if the reverberation had been reversed, as if the tape recording was running backwards. A perfect case of coincidence as illusion. In Version One of "How Can I Tell the Difference?" the composer tried to create the drama of the recording of the reverberation and the motorcyclist, using the "String Quartet" as an "orchestra," in the way it was intended to be used in the opera. In Version Two of "How Can I Tell the Difference?" a solo string player using the same playing technique as in the "String Quartet" opens and closes the sound "gates" to electronic reverberations and pre-recorded sounds running continuously with the performance. A digipack CD edition including an 8-page booklet with scores and liner notes written by Robert Ashley.

FUCHS Fuchs LP
Fuchs is a band that never was. It vanished as quickly as it appeared in the picture. In 2005, Kante singer and guitarist Peter Thiessen travelled to Weilheim to visit Markus and Micha Acher in their studio, where they were joined, among others, by Notwist-affiliated musicians like Cico Beck, Robert Klinger, Carl Oesterhelt, and Stefan Schreiber. Spirits were high, but schedules were full: after a week of improvised sessions, everyone went their own way. The recordings gathered dust until Markus Acher found them again in 2021 while cleaning out his studio. After carefully re-evaluating the rough mixes, the musicians decided to finally release them. The resulting album comprises six tracks that musically draw on jazz, aesthetically lean on dub techniques and ideologically pick up on krautrock: there's no solos to be heard on this record, just a few equally skilled and open-minded musicians listening to each other carefully, providing each other with space in which to unfold. Fuchs is a document of egos dissolving in a collective spirit. Thiessen and the Acher brothers met in the 1990s and bonded not only over their shared background in hardcore music and the DIY ethos in which it was rooted, but also over their love for jazz. Thiessen invited Micha Acher to join his band Kante on flu?gelhorn in 2004 for a tour that saw the expanded group play unusual encores after the official concert was over. The Acher brothers didn't have to ask twice when they invited him for a visit in Weilheim to further explore their mutual interests in a studio setting. Between immersing themselves in books by the photographer Leonore Mau, cooking together and drinking the occasional fruit schnapps, the trio went into the studio. Thiessen considers the resulting recording sessions to be a kind of attempt at musically translating their conversations during those days. They discussed different approaches to jazz, whether sampling and musical mis-citations can unlock ecstatic potentials and the possible parallels between syncretistic religions and pop music. The six pieces on Fuchs are chock-full of exactly these moments. When at one instant, the players seem to disperse and improvise freely, they always meet again on common ground a short time later, continuing on their way together. There are no conventions or even previous agreements that guide them, just a shared will to explore a vast range of curious sounds and unusual rhythms together as a truly unified constellation of very different musicians. Silk-screen artwork; includes download code; edition of 500.

GROSSKOPF, HARALD Synthesist LP
2022 restock; LP version. "Harald Grosskopf was in his early twenties when LSD 'blew [his] reality away,' as he recalls. Born in Hildesheim in 1949, he had previously drummed in fairly conventional rock bands, most recently for Wallenstein. Their label-boss Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser was fond of facilitating jam sessions for musicians on his Ohr und Pilz label, often supplying his 'cosmic couriers' with LSD (unbeknown to them, on occasion). In one such session, the drug inspired something of an epiphany in Grosskopf: 'There I was playing the drums when, in the midst of my euphoria, I realized that I had been imitating other drummers. Suddenly a voice spoke to me: stop trying to sound like Billy Cobham or Ginger Baker. From that moment on I felt liberated, free to drum without having to shine in a particular role.' Having discovered his own musical identity, Harald Grosskopf understood that a standard rock combo was not the ideal conduit through which to express it. Grosskopf: 'I was completely in thrall to electronic music and the total freedom that it offered. This was the music I wanted to create. I knew it would be a success, the energy levels were so high.' Grosskopf consequently left Wallenstein. 'I fell into a hole at first, wondering what I was going to do. So I sold my prized drum kit and used the money to buy a guitar, amp and echo device.' A few days later, the doorbell rang. It was Manuel Göttsching, on his way back to Berlin from a tour of France. They knew each other from Berlin's electronic scene and recording sessions for the likes of Ash Ra Tempel. Göttsching invited Grosskopf to sign up for his new project Ashra and the rest is history: Ashra (Grosskopf, Gottsching, Lutz Ulbrich alias Luul) released a series of successful albums in the years that followed. It was not until the summer of 1979, however, that he finally felt ready to release a solo album. Synthesist comprises eight instrumentals, recorded largely by Grosskopf on his own. His melodies, carried along by synthesizers and drums, were reminiscent of works by Berlin electronic friends such as Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, as well as those 'cosmic' sessions of the early 1970s -- yet each melody retains a unique timbre. Synthesist is thus regarded as a classic by electronic music enthusiasts all over the world, evoking a thrilling musical era of the past with equal capacity to excite today." --Christoph Dallach

FAUST The Faust Tapes CD
Reissue, originally released in 1973. There's something perversely fabulous about the thought of this warped masterwork wandering into 60,000 unsuspecting British homes in 1973. Faust's second-and-a-half album hit the shops to celebrate their signing to the nascent Virgin Records, who were looking to take advantage of the zeitgeist for German music at that time. Undeterred by the fact the band's unwillingness to engage with the commercial landscape had seen them dropped from Polydor, Branson and co. cooked up a suitably spectacular marketing strategy, selling the LP for 49p, the bargain price of a single. What was lurking within the grooves was a condensed collage of outtakes, oddities, sketches and samples previously known to the band's nearest and dearest as The Faust Party Tapes -- and how you wish you'd been to those parties. Cacophonous keys and roaring drones splinter into a deranged hybrid of tumbling toms and yelping vocals; committed experimentalism which in no way prepares you for the beautiful ballad which follows. Armed with acoustic guitar, playful piano and panning vocals, Faust fashion a pastoral idyll imbued with the most profound yearning. "Flashback Caruso" brims with Byrds-ian jangle and Syd's psychedelia, its non-sensical English lending the piece a Confucian lyricism perfect for expanded minds. Sliced and spliced between TV snippets, dissonant trumpet and the sound of someone pissing, the utterly freaky fuzz-rock of "J'ai Mal Aux Dents" sounds positively radio-friendly, far less far out than if it were encountered alone. Compared to the non-musical madness beside it, this thrash-jazz trance dance makes perfect sense, as does the corrosive breakbeat of "Two Drums, Bass, Organ", a mutant funk workout which rivals Can in an all-German dance off. The progressive and symphonic "Dr. Schwitters", dissected by fragments of dissonant process music, haunted vocal takes and the proto-industrial grind of "Elerimomuvid", charts a course for the dark side of the moon more suited to the serious cosmonauts of the world. Then the record freefalls into disorienting drum workouts, mixing desk experiments and a wicked premonition of no-wave jazz ("Hermann's Lament") before taking slight respite in the beauty of "Rudolf Der Pianist" and "I've Heard That One Before". The particles of prepared piano, power tools and tape echo continue to cascade through the soundspace, gradually building into the final trilogy of "Stretch Out Time", "Der Baum" and "Chère Chambre", which return to conventional song structure, albeit in the group's typically twisted style. Once again though, in comparison to the wonderfully weird pieces which precede them, these three tracks are entirely accessible, and in this lies the brilliance of the album.

PYROLATOR Niemandsland CD
The musician Kurt Dahlke is not only a member of the bands Der Plan and Fehlfarben, founding member of the group DAF and co-founder of the label Ata Tak, he has also released a stellar line of solo works under the name Pyrolator for which he enjoys great critical acclaim. What began in 1979 with the first release Inland continues its lineal thread with new work Niemandsland -- the sixth album within the Land series. It was 1979, some 43 years ago, when Pyrolator released Inland, an instrumental protest album, as he liked to think of it. Autumnal protests against nuclear weapon stations, against the entire structures of the war generation, but without the pathos of the rebellious songs which soundtracked the 1968 movement. Apart from a few samples, there were no words at all. Now, more than four decades later, Kurt Dahlke alias Pyrolator returns to his origins. But not, this time, in protest: "The clock already stands at ten past midnight and we have arrived in no man's land. Neither the student movement nor the rejectionist stance of punk changed anything. Avarice has emerged victorious and no future is nothing more than an empty cliché. This is what global reality looks like. The principle of cause and effect." This is also a back to the roots story for Pyrolator in the musical sense. Niemandsland was created exclusively with modular synthesizers, the computer merely a recording device. All of the tracks were played live and direct -- neither storable nor replicable. The sixth album in Pyrolator's Land series is more than just a bridge to the past and the music to be found there. It has a formal language all of its own, meandering between the beauty of crystal-clear melodies and restrained ambient moments on the one hand and rugged, dystopian brittleness on the other. A cycle revolving between the hope of a revolution for humanity and arrival in no man's land.

DIE WELTTRAUMFORSCHER Liederbuch LP
LP version. When the Welttraumforscher (world dream explorer) started their journey on July 14, 1981, it was not foreseeable that it would last so long. For over 40 years now, Christian Pfluger from Zurich has been working with drawings, texts and songs on the idiosyncratic and fascinating universe of the imaginary trio. This has resulted in numerous cassettes, LP and CD releases. Most recently, a two-part retrospective was released in the spring of 2021 on Hamburg's Bureau B (BB 353CD/LP and BB 354CD/LP), giving an insight into the wonderfully rapturous dream world of the project, which despite the continuous work remains something of an insider tip to this day. With their new collection Liederbuch, the Welttraumforscher are going on tour for the first time in many years. When the Welttraumforscher open their songbook, they are met, as in a pop-up book, by the fictional friends they have invented and sung to on their journey through 40 years: the captain to the soul Kip Eulenmeister (the owl master) and the crop circle researcher (iguana) Leguan Rätselmann, the insect twins Brtz and Brxl, the space travelers Lia and Mira from the Nordkristall (northern crystal), Ohm Olunde from the silent forests and the incredible dark pilots. In their distant worldroom, the two insect beings Brtz and Brxl open up the Welttraumforscher songbook. They find the songs, from A to O, sung by the Forscher on their albums dating back to the faraway year of 1981 -- on cassettes, vinyls, CDs and through digital communications kaleidoscopes. It's Sunday and, with plenty of downtime on their hands, Brtz and Brxl listen to all the songs; the one about the yellow wight in the moors, the one about Kip Eulenmeister, the Captain of Souls, one about Leguan Rätselmann, pursuing every riddle, and one about the dark things which sometimes happen around midnight. We want one too, say say Brtz and Brxl, a songbook of our own, all the songs we like to listen to the most, collected in one album. By now it is late on Sunday evening and the moon shines above them like a colorful paper lantern. The two insect beings ponder: what shall we call our songbook? The very name we gave it, songbook. So here it is and this is what it sounds like -- Brtz and Brxl wish you happy listening. As do the Welttraumforscher, whose quiet body of work turned out so well. So, without further ado: welcome! Welcome to the Welttraumforscher songbook!

MOEBIUS Solo Works Kollektion 7 Compiled by Asmus Tietchens CD
Dieter Moebius is one of the most important protagonists of avant-garde electronic music in Germany. Alongside his bands Kluster/Cluster and Harmonia, he participated in numerous collaborations (Brian Eno, Guru Guru). Seven years after Moebius passed away in July 2015, Asmus Tietchens, one of his musical companions, compiled this collection for Bureau B -- he concentrated on his solo works "as they offer the clearest insight into his personality and inventive potential.""Together, Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius were Cluster. Their influence on the development of electronic music in Germany since the early 1970s has been considerable. If we were to represent the two of them as woodcuts reflecting their musical characteristics, Roedelius would be the baroque version of Cluster and Moebius the motorik minimalist. Their solo releases make this all the more obvious, but the serendipitous combination of such divergent components is what makes the music of Cluster so wondrously magical. Aside from his many collaborations with a wide variety of musicians, there are just seven Moebius solo albums, one of which (Metropolis) was released posthumously in 2015. Moebius always wanted to create pop music and he actually thought of Cluster as pop. On the sleeve of the Cluster album Zuckerzeit he can be seen sporting a colorful Hawaiian shirt whilst sitting on Roedelius's knee. He found more than enough to astonish him in the here and now, so esoteric, transcendent, fantastical notions were alien to him. The names he gave to the tracks which populated his LPs and CDs categorically rejected any form of overindulgence. He may have thought he was making pop music, but his interest in the material, aural substance aligns him more closely with contemporary classical composers. The repetitive patterns he favored had less to do with baroque ornamentation and everything to do with minimal shifts in sound and rhythm, their rigor enhanced, time and again, by strange 'little' electronic noises and reverberating layers . . . Moebius rarely deviates from linear rhythms or tonal harmonies, yet is able to create a world of sound within this rhythmic/harmonic framework which is unmistakably his own. Never big on messages or statements, his focus has always been on feeling good about -- and in -- his music, a sensation he sought to share with his listeners. As far as I know, his listeners absolutely feel good in the presence of his music. For this collection, my fascination with his music as strong as ever, I have deliberately zeroed in on Moebius's solo works, as they offer the clearest insight into his personality and inventive potential..." --Asmus Tietchens, March 2022

PRINCE LINCOLN & THE ROYAL RASSES Ride With The Rasses LP
"1983 roots reggae album pressed on red vinyl. Ride With The Rasses was an unequivocal statement of Prince Lincoln's Rastafarian faith and a discernible demonstration that his 'determination (was) inexhaustible'. The LP found favor with listeners worldwide, but, without the extensive, expensive promotion and publicity a major label could provide the album went relatively unheard outside of those who had kept the faith with conscious music making. This Burning Sounds re-release will, hopefully, secure a long overdue measure of re-appraisal and positive reassessment."

OUMBADOUGOU, SIDI ABDALLAH Issiktane / Memory / Souvenir CD
Sidi Abdallah is the son of legendary Abdallah Oumbadougou from Agadez, Niger. Sidi grew up surrounded by Tuareg music and culture. His late father was one of the originators of the guitar-driven musical genre now called Tuareg desert blues. Steeped in this style Sidi emerges today among the new Tuareg musicians from Niger giving their own interpretation of the traditions of their fathers. He brings fresh energy to the music from northern Niger. With classic Tuareg instrumentation -- electric guitars, percussion and vocal -- Sidi's music echoes his father's influence, as well as the influence of other musicians from Niger such as Rhissa ag Wanagli, Bombino, Mdou Moctar, and the many other young musicians active in Agadez today. Sidi is age 22 and lives in Arlit and Agadez in northern Niger. Personnel: Sidi Abdallah Oumbadougou - electric guitar and vocals; Dawoul Ahamouk - electric bass; Djamilou Rabey - drums.

JOHNNY MOPED The Search For Xerxes LP
"Johnny Moped's 'lost album' from 1990, finally gets a reissue." "I like this album, Johnny hates it. But why? I think it's more 'Johnny Moped' than any other album out there. What other album has entirely penned JM songs/ditties like 'Soldiers' and 'Moped crash' plus ad-libs and all the other little interludes in between the tracks that are pure 'Moped'. Johnny thinks it sounds like a 'disco' album, which it does in places, but, hey-ho, it was 1989 and it was the age of Stock, Aitken and Waterman. At the time there had been no Moped band since 1985-ish and certainly Slimy hadn't been in the band since the early '80s. Also, there was only one album out there, Cycledelic so there was a lot of songs destined for a follow up album that never happened and it looked like we were going to be a one album band. So, with so much unreleased material and a chronic lack of 'mopedisum' I decided to embark on a little project... This album came out in 1990 on Deltic Records but the deal was that I had to produce a finished master tape that could go straight to the cutting room and be pressed, so I borrowed a 4-track Teac and a Roland sampler and Roland drum machine and got to work. Some of the tracks sound like they were recorded in someone's bedroom, that's because they were, but Captain recorded some great stuff on his 8-track where I had recorded Johnny 'live' and handed over a tape for him to work with ('I'm a Spasm', 'Soldiers', 'Cut Across Shorty'). Also, he provided some decent backing vocals on other tracks ('Corpse Boogie', 'Hiawatha')." --Dave Berk, May 2022

WILLIAM LOVEDAY INTENTION, THE Paralysed By The Mountains LP
"Brand new studio album by The William Loveday Intention as part of their 'career in a year'!" "The cover pic is from a visit I made with my son and friends to the artist Giovanni Segantini's hut in the High Alps sometime around 2016. Segantini (1858-1899), was an illiterate and stateless artist famous for his paintings made in the Engadin. The title track is about living your life through someone else's YouTube channel: a blow-by-blow account of how their life in the frozen north is more, picturesque, sensitive, fun, enlightened and artistic than yours could ever be. 'Stood Upon a Chair' is about the villain Jessie James, but without the romance part that is usually added to such tales. 'You Gotta Move', a Mississippi Fred McDowell cover, is one of the best recordings we've ever made. Here I'm accompanied by my wife Julie and my friend Dave Tattersall who plays electric slide guitar. A true gem which should make someone, somewhere, rich and famous. (Or at least make Mick Jagger blush with shame.) Topping it all off we hit a couple of old Headcoats numbers with added verses that reveal the hidden depth behind those impeccable pop songs." --William Loveday 2022

DAVIS, MILES We Want Miles LP
Reissue, originally released in 1982. "Pressed on opaque yellow vinyl with Japanese stylized insert and deluxe obi strip. Remastered from the original analog tapes. The first live Miles Davis electric band release since 1977's very dark and heavy Dark Magus. The album features live performances from shows at Boston's Kix Club. The double vinyl release contains reimagined versions of songs from The Man With the Horn (1981), tunes from the pre-electric Gil Evans collaboration Porgy and Bess (1959), and a dedication to the Boston venue called Kix. While this was one of the first live Miles Davis performances in over half a decade it certainly did not show! This album features R&B legend Marcus Miller on bass, Mike Stern on guitar, Bill Evans on saxophone, Mino Cinelu on percussion, and electric band alumni Al Foster on drums. Produced and edited by long time Miles collaborator Teo Macero."

WATERS, MUDDY After The Rain LP
2022 restock. "The second of two electric-blues albums released on Chess Records and Cadet Concept imprint in the late '60s, Muddy Waters' After the Rain has achieved cult-like status amongst blues fans in the years since his death in 1983. After taking a backlash from critics with first attempt at adopting psychedelic influences on Electric Mud, Muddy made adjustments for the follow-up, despite keeping a majority of the same session players. This time, he toned down the psychedelic elements and put them in balance with his classic Chicago blues sound, and the results yield some vintage tracks that glow with fuzzy guitars and bass: 'I Am the Blues,' 'Ramblin' Mind,' 'Bottom of the Sea,' and 'Blues Trouble.' After being out of print for years, Get On Down is proud to present this rare classic from Muddy Waters pulled from the original masters and presented on LP with Japanese-style OBI and double-sided poster."

TAMIKREST Chatma LP+CD
2022 restock. Gatefold LP version with CD. "Tamikrest" means "crossing" in the language of the Kel Tamashek, a traditionally nomadic Saharan people that are commonly referred to as the Tuaregs. It is an apt name for a band that so successfully merges the values of their timeless culture with the sounds and visions they have encountered on a headlong journey to the concert stages and iPods of the world. Since the band emerged onto the international scene with their debut album Adagh, they have been in constant motion, moving between the Sahara and Europe as though these places were next-door neighbors. All the while, during this same time period, their homeland has suffered increasingly profound and catastrophic events. Originally hailing from Kidal, in the northeast of Mali, as the result of ongoing war, persecution and political collapse, most of the band now lives in exile in Algeria. These last years have been intensely vivid for Tamikrest, defined as they have been by both tragic sadness (families and friends turned refugees, the brutal imposition of Sharia law in their hometown) and collective growth (their musical dreams building one upon another). Their album Chatma, their third, deftly navigates these experiences and fashions them into a fully persuasive and poetic musical document. The album is filled with sober reflection, moral indignation, musical experimentation, cultural celebration and the kick of rock and roll. Chatma is also Tamikrest's first album to be wholly written around a defined theme. In Tamashek, "chatma" means "sisters," and the band has dedicated the album in their own words to: "the courage of the Tuareg women, who have ensured both their children's survival and the morals of their fathers and brothers." Chatma also delivers Tamikrest's most wide-screen and wide-ranging sonic statement to-date. The infectious, sing-along rock stylings of "Imanin bas zihoun," the acoustic seduction of "Adounia tabarat," the Pink Floyd-influenced montage "Assikal" and the lush, melancholy ambiance of the album's finale, "Timtar," all add up to a sustained audio adventure. Echoes of dub, blues, psychedelia, funk and even art-rock are seamlessly woven by Tamikrest into their increasingly individual take on the Tuareg musical tradition. And on an album where the title translates as "sisters," it makes perfect sense that this time around we hear the full emergence of the haunting voice of female vocalist Wonou Walet Sidati in tandem with lead vocalist Ousmane Ag Mossa. A new guitarist, Paul Salvagnac has also joined the band, bringing with him fresh textures and possibilities. Contemporary Tuareg music has produced several unforgettable albums in recent years and Chatma certainly deserves to be ranked with these. But one also gets the sense, when listening to Chatma that there is something uniquely innovative and exploratory about Tamikrest's musical quest and that at last they have stepped into a wide-open space of their own.

WOVENHAND Silver Sash LP
Repressed; LP version. 180 gram vinyl. Glitterhouse release of the new Wovenhand album. Silver Sash shows David Eugene Edwards and his band in finest form once again. Silver Sash is the first sign of life by David Eugene Edwards since the critically acclaimed Star Treatment in 2016. The new album is the first Wovenhand opus completely written in cooperation with Chuck French, who is also known as a guitarist for aggressive emocore outfit Planes Mistaken For Stars. Both know each other for ages. Finally, they found the time to write this astonishing piece of an album. "The music was recorded in my house in Denver with the help of our dear friend Jason Begin. David recorded his vocals at his house (which also happens to be three blocks away). I had a bunch of music in various states of existence, of various ages, languishing in my computer. I made a playlist for David and we just started to devour them bit by bit. Some were scrapped, but most were utilized," says French. The making of Silver Sash has taken longer than for any previous Wovenhand album. It took more than four years until both artists were satisfied with the outcome. Silver Sash opens with a mighty clash that is "Temple Timber", followed by the forward pushing "Acacia". "Duat Hawk" is the mystic counterpart, focusing on Edwards's rich, billowing and emotive voice that was always the driving force of his music. Next is the first single "Dead Dead Beat" which kicks off full tilt. The song's galloping drums, hard-hitting guitars and Edwards's soaring voice compels you to rise and join the fray. Nine new songs in total were recorded that despite their power and heaviness have lost nothing of its magic and hypnotics as the closing and title track of the album will prove, "the namesake. It's a jovial good-bye," says French. Powerful, subtle and intensely deep. Uniting the calm and mystic side of the early Wovenhand years with the straight forward yet still magic songs of his latest albums. Over the last two decades, his prolific work in both Wovenhand and the legendary 16 Horsepower has influenced and inspired a generation of musicians throughout the expansive alternative music world. The band cannot be described in traditional terms. Their sound is an organic weave of neo-folk, post rock, punk, old-time, and alternative sounds. All coming together as a vehicle for David's soulful expression and constant spiritual self-exploration.

Widely considered to be their watershed moment, the album catapulted them into the mainstream and proved that indie bands could enjoy wide commercial success without compromising their artistic vision. More recently, Daydream Nation has been recognized as a classic of its time: Pitchfork ranked it #1 on their '100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s'; Spin listed it at #13 on their '125 Best Albums of 1985-2010'; Rolling Stone put it at #45 on their '100 Best Albums of the Eighties' list and #328 on their '500 Greatest Albums of All Time.' It was one of 50 recordings chosen by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry in 2006. 2007 saw the release of an expanded four-disc vinyl box set, but now the album is back in its original form after years of being out of print and highly sought after. As a special 21st century bonus, the vinyl now includes a digital download card -- radical adults rejoice!"

JARRETT, WAYNE Chip In LP
2022 repress. 2012 reissue. Originally released in 1982. "Wayne Jarrett seems to have drifted in and out of the reggae spotlight like a late-night ghost, tracking the timeless 'Satta Dread' with Bunny Lee in 1976, then vanishing until he turned up to record the album Chip In with producer Henry 'Junjo' Lawes in Kingston in 1982; later in the year he showed up in New York to put down six classic sides for Lloyd 'Bullwackie' Barnes' Wackies label which, along with the dubs, made up the Showcase, Vol. 1 LP. Then Jarrett, like a wisp of ganja smoke, was gone again, and rumors persist that he is now living in Connecticut, in New York, in Miami, or perhaps he's back in Kingston. Mysterious as these comings and goings are, Jarrett has managed to produce two marvelous roots albums, both of which feature his disarming, Horace Andy-like tenor vocals. His quavering delivery, which first appears to be a stylistic affectation, quickly becomes endearing, and on this set . . . listeners have what has to be called a lost reggae classic. Recorded at Channel One over some gorgeous Roots Radics rhythms and mixed by Scientist at King Tubby's in Kingston, Chip In was cut just as the roots influence of the 1970s was waning and the onset of dancehall was beginning to engulf Jamaica, and it is the perfect transitional set because of it, full of a dreamy, druggy flow, but still somehow fresh and sparse and perfectly nuanced and balanced as Jarrett's intimate phrasing floats in and out of the mix. It isn't a flashy album, and it isn't insistent or strident, but has all the feel of an unforced conversation with a close friend, unwinding with the sharp yet gauzy clarity of a perfectly recalled memory." --AllMusic

THOMPSON, LINVAL Baby Father LP
2022 repress. Originally released in 1983. "The follow-up to Linval Thompson's classic 1982 album, Look How Me Sexy, Baby Father arrived the following year, and was equally masterful. Both sets were self-produced at Channel One studio, with Anthony Hamilton at the mixing board, and the Roots Radics at their finest. However, the latter album also boasted saxophonist Dean Fraser and trombonist Ronald 'Nambo' Robinson, and their inclusion in the line-up seems to have pushed Thompson to even greater emotional heights. In general, the singer had a gentle vocal style, although he imbued it with absolute conviction, leaving no doubt that when he cried 'really and truly' -- his dancehall catch phrase at the time, he absolutely meant every word he was singing. This was as true on Thompson's romantic numbers as on his cultural ones. Baby Father was stuffed with gorgeous love and lovelorn numbers, and each one was a stunner. The disappointment that fills 'She Gone,' the emotional power of 'Yes I'm Coming,' the beauty of 'Love Me Forever,' all are fabulous and enhanced by the Radics' own melody-strewn performances across a stream of resurrected musical gems, which keyboardist Wycliffe 'Steely' Johnson infuses with a pure Studio One sound. The cultural numbers are just as strong, and songs like 'Run Down Vanity' and 'Poor Man' are classics, but even more potent were 'Shouldn't Lift Your Hand,' and the title track, which tackles domestic violence and addresses irresponsible young men respectively. To this day, Thompson's reputation as a producer far outweighs the respect he garnered as a singer. This masterpiece again proves those comparison are unfair, and his dramatic dancehall productions here, of especial note 'Tell Me the Right Time,' are equaled by his excellent, intelligent lyrics and forthright performances throughout this set." --AllMusic

SMITH, WAYNE Sleng Teng LP
2022 repress. 2013 reissue. Originally released in 1986. "One-hit wonders are no more unusual in reggae than in any other genre of popular music, but rarely has a reggae artist made such a huge splash with a single and then failed so utterly to follow it up with anything notable as Wayne Smith did with his classic 'Under Me Sleng Teng.' Built on a pre-set drum track and bassline that he and a friend had discovered on a cheap Casio keyboard in 1985, the 'Sleng Teng' rhythm ushered in the 'digital' age of dancehall reggae, made producer Prince Jammy's fortune, and changed the face of reggae music forever; the rhythm was popular enough to spawn literally hundreds of versions and imitations, and it continues to be used as a standard backing track for reggae deejays more than twenty years after its original release. Unfortunately, and perhaps inevitably, the rest of the album fails to maintain the momentum of the single; 'Icky All Over' continues the horticultural theme to the accompaniment of a much less compelling digital rhythm, and 'E20' develops a mild sufferer's theme over a bland approximation of the 'Sleng Teng' rhythm. 'Walk Like Granny' and 'Hard to Believe' bring the energy level up significantly, thanks largely to a fine Cleveland 'Clevie' Browne and Wycliffe 'Steely' Johnson rhythm in the latter case, but overall the rest of the album is pleasant but unremarkable. Recommended overall as an essential document in reggae history." --AllMusic

CAIRO FREE JAZZ ENSEMBLE Heliopolis LP
2022 restock, last copies. Holiday Records present the first ever authorized reissue Cairo Free Jazz Ensemble's Heliopolis, originally released in 1970. Released under license from the artist. One of the great projects in Egyptian jazz, the Cairo Free Jazz Ensemble was formed by Salah Ragab and Hartmut Geerken as an avant-garde offshoot of The Cairo Jazz Band, the first jazz big band in the country. Formed in 1968 when Ragab was appointed chief of Egypt's Military Department of Music and had at his disposal a vast staff of musicians (almost three thousand!), an entire military building, and a full range collection of musical instruments. When encountering this recording, issued in 1970, the deep resonance found between the ensemble and its American counterparts becomes startlingly clear. Heliopolis is a stunning blend of big band spiritual jazz, the music of the Middle East, and the fire and energy of free jazz, unveiling a deep creative resonance with the contemporaneous efforts of Pharaoh Sanders, Phil Cohran, and of course Sun Ra, combining jazz instrumentation and musical style with indigenous melodies and instruments to create a musical object with few parallels. The album is a throbbing, squealing, wild journey through the creative heights of sound channeling swirling, focused artistry that taps future and past in a single blow. Copies of the original pressing are between the rarest and most sought-after records in canon of recorded jazz.

MARINELLI, BOB Blood and Bones CD
In the '90s cassette-only culture explosion, one personality emerged repeatedly as a head above the rest closely followed by fanatics drawn to the warm sonic violence from Bob Marinelli, one of the few artists that managed to keep some kind of secrecy around him even if using his own name. Marinelli built up a reputation through a cascade of collaborations and splits across the spectrum with artists like Flutter, David Gilden, and Proof of the Shooting to name just a few, eventually aligning with Japan's breakaway isolationist, outermost and a revered split on Xerxes with Government Alpha. His networking skills culminated in the unmissable Freedom Comp. 98 compilation which stands as a fragile time capsule of the special packaging era as well as the diversity of sound and thoughts in the worldwide DIY underground. In 1999, the letter writing and word of mouth excitement converged from two sources at once that Bob Marinelli would release his first CD, on the newly minted and soon to be canonical Groundfault Recordings. That one of the cassette devotees would be honored with a pro-CD was a rarity back then, and endorsed by noise professional Erik Hoffman of Pinch-A-Loaf Productions. After years of dead ends and mongoose chases, Hospital Productions reveal the original DAT master of what would have been that lost Groundfault album, Blood and Bones. Even the most devoted Marinelli hawks will be surprised at the dynamic textures presented in an otherwise continuous and seamless litany of field recording, atonal electrodes, closing-hour-at-the-butcher-shop cleaves, and an unexpectedly melancholic climax. Marinelli's work speaks for itself after nearly 20 years and makes you feel as though 1999 is still here to come. Digipack; includes digital download code.

HANSEN, ROLF Tableau LP
Tableau is Rolf Hansen's second full-length album under his given name and acts as a sequel to his solo debut Elektrisk Guitar, released in 2019 through Karaoke Kalk (KK 114CD/LP). On the 14 new pieces, the Copenhagen-based composer and musician further explores the sonic possibilities of the electric guitar by opting for a radically different approach and putting great limitations on himself as a performer. Tableau is an experimental record in the truest sense of the word, eschewing conventional modes of playing the instrument and instead turning the guitar into a sound source for compositions that are at once abstract and concrete. Already on his last album, Hansen had found a different approach to playing and composing, but this time went even further and created a set-up in which the electric guitar becomes a different instrument altogether. This is also expressed in its title: a tableau is, broadly understood, an image-forming momentary bodily pause in a dramaturgical or narrative process. In the context of the album, tableau is the form and sound that emerge when the musician's usual approach to playing and the compositional practice is halted and transformed. To achieve this, the guitar is placed on a table with microphones installed around it and tuned in a static microtonal modality thanks to wooden replacement frets that have been inserted under the strings. This alters how the sounds are being generated with the instrument, which is now played from above, occasionally strummed or stroked with a tool. The opener "Begyndelse" already sets the tone by punctuating dense layers of sound with a one-note melody that provides a rough rhythmic structure and harmonic anchor for the track that still seems to mutate wildly the further it progresses. Even in moments in which Hansen opts for a more directly accessible approach like on the following "Over Grænsen" or "Tid", the pieces' emotional qualities are greatly amplified by their sonic idiosyncrasies. This is best exemplified by "Højre Hånd". Using high microphone gain to magnify the high-frequency acoustic sounds of the electric guitar, Hansen captured a rich near-symphonic changing spectrum of overtones. Tableau is full of moments marked by almost unnoticeable shifts and changes, offering a wealth of sounds that are as evocative as they come unexpectedly. The kinship between its predecessor Elektrisk Guitar and Tableau is undeniable. Both are based on self-imposed constraints, a radical form of reduction that made it possible for Hansen to broaden his sonic palette and compositional approach. Includes download code; edition of 300.

ANT ORANGE You're Super In Diagonal (Remixed) 12"
This EP is more than your usual remix package. Remixed is a meeting of kindred, idiosyncratic spirits. Ricardo Villalobos, Ada, and Tolouse Low Trax each give a new spin to one track from "You're Super In Diagonal", the latest album by Ant Orange (KK 119CD/LP, 2020). Their versions of "Monogome", "Flutter", and "Cracker" are complemented by the brand-new track by the elusive artist, "FFF". Villalobos keeps it short and sweet -- at least by his standards. His rendition of "Monogome" translates the mutant jungle vibes of the original into an entirely different dialect while maintaining its psychedelic qualities. The chugging, nine-minute-long "Siebhouse Remix" is at once rhythmically intricate and positively disorientating. Ada proves to be as imaginative as ever with her first remix in three years. Her take on the album opener "Flutter" extracts the track's warmth and transplants it into a laid-back downbeat track. She also incorporates the vocals from "Monogome", but gives it a very different spin and adds a healthy dose of autotune to it in the process. Dreamy, hazy, blissful. On the flipside, Detlef Weinrich approaches things very differently. His "Bo Bo Zy Remix" of "Cracker" offers industrial at its most inebriated, dub riddims after a bottle of hard liquor instead of a spliff. Ant Orange's "FFF" then seems to mediate between those three very different approaches: danceable yet melancholic, challenging yet restrained, it picks up on the underlying concept of "You're Super In Diagonal", combining IDM's penchant for complex rhythmic structures and a directness inherent to hip-hop music since the early days of the genre up until the age of UK drill. Edition of 300.

KING L. MAN Headonix LP
Helmed by Dave Watts, aka D.WattsRiot (Fun-da-mental), the debut King L. Man album, Headonix, is beat-laden shout out in response to the perpetual state of war we seem to find ourselves at. Outrage and disgust, love and hate, history and presence. Contributions come from four continents. Fresh on the scene is Senegalese vocalist Sidi I.B., who arrived on Canarian shores with two hundred other compatriots, cold, wet and hungry after seven days at sea with nothing but his future in his hands. Temporarily housed at the infamous migrant holding center in Las Raíces, Tenerife, the studio environment provided an avenue of relief from the inadequate conditions at the overcrowded camp. Also from Senegal, living in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is rapper Ibrahima El Latigazo who delivers his lyrics in French, Wolof, Spanish, English, and Sérère. Rounding up the Senegalese contingent is Mame Samba, a group that hold the spirits close when performing. Their contribution is from recording sessions they had with François R. Cambuzat and Gianna Greco (Putan Club, Ifriqiyya Electrique). Kiki Hitomi (Waq Waq Kingdom, King Midas Sound) returns to the fold, exhaling positivity with Canarian multi-instrumentalist Javier Afonso (Grenouille). The Canarian faction also includes violinist Mónica Viñoly, Dani Garcia (Lagoss, Tupperwear), and Vakawuare. Further guests include percussionist Miroca Paris (Cesária Évora, Madonna); Hamid Mantu (TransGlobal Underground); Ramjac (Dub Colossus), drums and percussion respectively. Also features Zeeteah.

BOWERY ELECTRIC Beat 2LP
2022 repress. "The second album from New York City's Bowery Electric was released in late 1996, less than 15 months after their self-titled debut, but it found them having traveled light years musically in the interim, the group having seemingly decided to see how far they could take the guitar/bass/drums/vocal setup into the atmosphere. Every aspect of their approach had been refined and focused: squalling, distorted guitars had been transformed into hazy, sensual sheets; the live drums transmuted to sampled rhythms more in debt to the blossoming down-tempo sound of the day; bass lines reduced to their most basic diagrams; vocals submerged to become one with the narcotized fog of the instruments; even the lyrics were reduced to a few minimal lines used sparingly so as not to overshadow the dynamic. Beat is a lush and dense mantra of shadowy percussion, barely-there vocals and immersive drones that envelops the listener in an opiated blanket of sound. The second in a trio of albums released by the core duo of Lawrence Chandler and Martha Schwendener, Beat is without doubt their definitive artistic statement. Coming 20 years to the day of its original release, this is the first time this album has been available on vinyl in almost two decades, and the first ever U.S. vinyl release."

HECKER, TIM Harmony in Ultraviolet CD
2022 reprint. "Harmony in Ultraviolet is Tim Hecker's sixth album. It is a continuation of Hecker's interest in spectral communications, noise, impressionist musics, thresholds of listening pleasure/pain, and the limits of digital composition. This album is a significant development of his song-craft, challenging the usefulness of descriptors such as ambient, drone, metal, noise and even electronic music. If references are necessary it could be described as a sonata for the elements, songs of crackling embers, tidal pools, spruce skylines and autumn winds. Gerhard Richter's abstract paintings are also a fair orientation. Materially speaking, it is a record of whirring drones, whispering fissures, dense disintegrating chords, late-night noise and truth-telling harmonics. Yet this record follows no overarching process, no underlying narrative. It is both a homage for the Italian partigiani and also not at all. It is songs about ghost writing and midnight whispers but then again it isn't. In many ways this album can be viewed as a work of total destruction, embracing indeterminacy as an aesthetic ideal."

GROUPER Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill LP
2022 repress; LP version. "The third full-length release for Portland, Oregon-based Liz Harris. Harris might have achieved a significant fan base thanks to the whispering, near-ambient vocal crusades of her debut album Way Their Crept and its follow-up Wide, but those with a careful ear would have heard slightly more trapped beneath her fuzzy chain of effects. Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill marks a departure of sorts for Liz, which sees her turn down the fuzz boxes which caged (and to some degree defined) her sound and allows her voice to ring out above everything else. It is an album steeped in the world of dream-pop and far from shying away from the reference, Liz has instead grabbed on with both hands, creating an album's worth of perfect, left-field pop songs. Using delicate song structures which are at once both familiar and somehow alien, her vocals cry out hauntingly over stripped-down guitar lines and looped environmental recordings. These are the future soundtracks to love, despair and ultimately, hope." "This remarkable album is actually what I personally always wanted 4AD records to sound like, only they never quite delivered the hazy pleasures their beautiful sleeve art promised." --Pitchfork (8.2)

FOWLEY, KIM In Deutschland LP
"One of very few recordings of Kim Fowley to survive and amazingly, he survived this show as the audience boo-ed him off the stage. The band hadn't rehearsed properly and mid-show, the organizer asked the audience if they wanted the show to continue and even though they emphatically said 'NO!!!!', Fowley and the band continued on, oblivious to the jeering audience. Eventually, he was 'removed' from the stage."

BARBIERI, CATERINA Spirit Exit (Silver Vinyl) 2LP
Double-LP version. Silver vinyl. The musical vortexes of Caterina Barbieri rewire time and space. Listening to the Italian composer and modular synth virtuoso has felt like traveling at light-speed and slow-motion all at once since 2017's breakthrough Patterns Of Consciousness. 2019's acclaimed Ecstatic Computation pushed even further with the lead single "Fantas". Far beyond any new age trope or modern synth trend, her music stands alone in its ecstatic intensity and cataclysmic emotional impact. Marking the debut album on her new label light-years, Barbieri now delivers her most profound work yet -- a journey through inner-space as vast as a universe and as intimate as a heartbeat. Spirit Exit is Caterina Barbieri's time machine, primarily composed with a modular synth rig she thinks of more like a mechanical fortune teller. Whereas previous releases were constructed on lengthy tours, capturing only snapshots of continually evolving works, Spirit Exit represents the producer's first album fully written and recorded in her home studio amidst Milan's two-month pandemic lockdown in 2020. It was during this extended isolation she found inspiration from female philosophers, mystics and poets spread across time, but united in their strength at cultivating vast internal worlds. St. Teresa D'Avila's foundational 16th century mystical text The Interior Castle, philosopher Rosi Braidotti's posthuman theories and the metaphysical poetry of Emily Dickinson act as thematic anchors throughout Spirit Exit. Spirit Exit crystallizes Barbieri's densely layered, blindingly bright synth arrangements while introducing stunning new elements that feel as if they've always belonged. Strings and guitar flawlessly thread into the composer's web of modular patches, while her revelatory singing voice often cuts right through them. Melodies remain Barbieri's great passion and obsession and on Spirit Exit they grow as large as planets before cracking into atoms. The sweeping "At Your Gamut" perfects the producer's dramatic, slow-burning openers, but in her first ever use of sampling, it later gets crushed, accelerated and unrecognizably transformed into the ghostly hook surging through "Terminal Clock". As the album closes on "The Landscape Listens" -- a song that approaches death with all the gentle grace of Brian Eno's "An Ending (Ascent)".

MONDKOPF Spring Stories CD
Deprived of sanity, Paul Régimbeau aka Mondkopf found new territories of expression with Spring Stories, a collection of post-rapture moods full of glorious chaos, ready to absorb and re-ignite all that is worn. As a phoenix raising from the ashes, Spring Stories captures the earth in full bloom. Darkness and insanity loosen its grips as the roots and fresh leaves creates a slow dance towards the sun. Similarly, sine-wave drones move around exploding electric guitar improvisations as new light beams on shadow cast corners. The album feels like a '60s jam set in the post-world psychedelic underground. Heavy, absurd, beautiful, and ready to sooth burnt out, depleted minds. Paul has citied that he's affected as much by folk improvisors such as Master Wilburn Burchette and Robbie Basho as well as the doom drone of giants Earth and Sunn O))). Spring Stories invokes on these, while feeling like a personal blow-out, coming right from the core. Touching and grand, like spring itself. The album also features Frederic D. Oberland on two tracks playing variously duduk and alto saxophone. Lastly, The Necks drummer Tony Buck shakes and rattles all over the final -- and seriously epic -- piece "Continuation", as the world aligns while the sun rises over its near-dead shape. Digipak; edition of 200.

MINRU Liminality CD
Minru is the project of Caroline Blomqvist, a Swedish musician based in Berlin. Woven from light and shadow, the interplay of her folk and indie-rock blend appears from a personal space of finding life after death. On her debut album Liminality she paints melody in soft tones, whispering secrets to navigate feelings of loss. Built around winding layers of acoustic guitar, piano, and strings, Minru is a surprisingly uplifting and stirring testament to Blomqvist's own suffering from the passing of someone close to her. Returning to Berlin from Sweden feelings of grief, confusion, and pain travelled with her, and these emotions prompted the journey both of and within the album, heard as a dreamlike actualization of wandering lost between them. Defined as "the threshold separating one space from another," Liminality moves between feeling the ground beneath your feet fall away, fighting through the darkness and the doubt, and the emerging shades of hope and light as you painstakingly make peace with mortality and find yourself as a person again. Flourishing from a preferred position of solitude, Liminality sees Blomqvist's vision radiate with intensity from her home-based studio in Neukölln -- a small, two-room apartment with squeaky old wooden floors. Capturing the intimacy of the space, she recorded vocals and synth on gear partly borrowed from friends, and the songs flow with a stream of consciousness as feelings become entwined with melody. Time-restraint drew the process to a natural close, preventing Blomqvist from losing herself to experimentation. Finished and self-produced at a Berlin-Lichtenberg recording studio alongside musical friends (Povel Widestrand, Tobias Blessing, Sunniva Lilian Shaw Of-Tordarroch, Marlene Becher, and Liv Solveig Wagner), the result is beautifully detailed and rich like the folk of her Swedish roots. First picking up a guitar as a kid and becoming obsessed with it, she would skip school to spend extra hours mastering the instrument, grappling to perfect the "Stairway to Heaven" intro. After attending music high school in Gothenburg and playing in bands during her teens, Blomqvist later moved to Germany. She performed with Tuvaband, Adna, and Tara Nome Doyle and played in Berlin venues Loophole and Schokoladen. With the passing of time, she felt a growing urge to find an outlet for her own songs; Minru was the answer along with her first Yearnings EP. Now writing whenever she returns to Sweden, within the calm and stillness of her family's mountainside cabin, her skillfully constructed arrangements summon the comforting atmosphere of home. Liminality is the kind of record that rewards attention. Give this album your time, it will give you its soul.

FLEISCHMANN, B. Music for Shared Rooms CD
Music for Shared Rooms is B. Fleischmann's eleventh solo album and his first since 2018. It is also not an album, or at least not in the conventional sense of the word. These 16 instrumental pieces provide a kaleidoscopic glimpse of a forward-thinking musician at home in many different musical worlds, including experimental and abstract music, pop, and more classically-minded compositional forms. These pieces were culled from an archive of roughly 600 compositions for theatre pieces and films written throughout the past twelve years. The Österreichischer Filmpreis-awarded composer, however, aimed for more than simply documenting his extensive work in and with different media. To do so, he edited and re-mixed the individual recordings for this release, taking them out of their contexts and reworking them for an audience who can experience them in a different setting. Music for Shared Rooms makes it possible for its listeners to engage with the sounds and to fill the spaces they open up with their own imagination. Roughly speaking, music for theater or film can serve two functions: it either takes the lead, or underscores what is happening on stage or screen. The marvelous thing about these pieces is that they manage to do both. Fleischmann's work as a prolific producer has always drawn on contrasts, at times combining pop sentiment with rigid experimentation, the seemingly naive with the intricate and complex. This approach also marks the tracks collected here: bringing together acoustic elements and electronic sounds, at times working with conventional structures but always de- and re-contextualizing them, Fleischmann constructs a vivid dramaturgy out of discrete singular compositions, letting them interact across the record. A dramaturgical interconnectedness of varied musical materials is the thread that runs through Music for Shared Rooms. The differences between the pieces may be striking, but the progression from one to the other is subtle. It goes on like this through different moods and tempos. All these pieces create distinct situations through the juxtaposition of diverse musical elements, but are also bound together by a single vision. Writing music for theatre pieces or film requires a composer and his pieces to engage with people and their movements in space, which is exactly what Fleischmann offers on this record.

Limited 2022 restock. "Berlin versus Kaolack, round three. A traditional Jola rhythm, fast and energetic, with tuned, talking and kit drums swarming across a skeletal down-home guitar somewhere between blues and disco and the Mboup brothers' impassioned plea for an end to division and bloodshed in their Casamance homeland. Then a more deeply dug-in, spaced-out funk, edgily spun from a Serer rhythm, underpinning Mbene's reflective song about parental selflessness. 'Sama Yaye', 'My Mother.' Both with full instrumental versions. Sound-wise peas in a pod with the intricate, soaring barrage of Ornette's Prime Time in full flight, when it had two of everything in the lineup, and Jamaaladeen Tacuma was on bass, Denardo on electronic drums. HARRY PUSSY You'll Never Play This Town Again 2LP
Limited double-LP version of the 2008 CD originally issued on Load, compiling the best live and studio recordings by the final iteration of this group."60 second bursts of chaotic rock 'n' roll that barbarize whole histories of freakout style, from free jazz through classic hardcore, boogie, blues, Black Flag, Germs, most explicitly through Beefheart, but all hyper-condensed into ultra-kranky riffs that Orcutt plays at hallucinatory speed, compressing Zoot Horn Rollo style avant confusion into lighting runs and metallic two note knock-outs. Hoyos's style is so primitive that it's wildly avantgarde, with an instinctive feel for time that confounds the most advanced improvisatory strategies with the most hysterical. And her vocals are post-Yoko in the truest sense, not directly informed by her but sharing the same spontaneous energy and a-musical appeal, sometimes breaking from songs completely to expand on barely articulated vocal rants and fever pitched bouts of screaming. The whole group existed in a zone that was constantly beyond technique. The arc of their career was perfect, the mission truly accomplished, and all that's left is this amazing series of recordings, a body of work that has had a disproportionate effect on the minds, if rarely the actual sound of the underground." --David Keenan, The Wire, December 2008

SMALL CRUEL PARTY E Vago Fior Del Tempo LP
The four pieces on this record all date from the late 1980s and predate any officially released material: "Cords" was entirely realized in Chicago, and the others realized, or at least finished, upon arriving in Seattle in 1990. The pieces were originally privately released on cassette in micro-editions of five to seven copies and given to friends. In 2009-2010, Petri Supplies, which had a complete set of those early privately released tapes, rereleased some of that material (including these four pieces) in small-run bootleg cassette editions.

EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN Alles In Allem LP
2022 repress; LP version. After more than 12 years, Einstürzende Neubauten's long-awaited new studio album Alles In Allem is finally going to be released. The album marks the quintessence of the band's output, opening yet another unexpected door in 40 years of ongoing sound research by a very experimental group of musicians around Blixa Bargeld. This band, like nearly no other, has managed to create a musical cosmos. It has, in fact, built up its own genre by uniquely combining edgy sound with sophisticated poetry. Appropriately, in the Year of the Rat -- the symbol of ingenuity and versatility according to the Chinese zodiac -- the band is not resting on the laurels of its last four decades. Instead, it curiously continues to explore everything that the sound universe has to yield, with one eye on the future and with boundless playfulness The unique sound and textual landscapes of the band, founded in 1980 in Berlin, reveal the timelessness that Blixa Bargeld, N. U. Unruh, Alexander Hacke, Jochen Arbeit, and Rudolph Moser have continuously maintained. And yet, through experimental approaches to songwriting, instruments developed over four decades and collective input, the band sounds remarkably cutting edge within its own time. In fact, through its individual brand of music the Einstürzende Neubauten seem to always command each and every manifestation of the here and now -- whether industrial in its early years, the driving beats of the 1990s or its more considered later work. The verse "Wir hatten tausend Ideen / Und alle waren gut" (We had a thousand ideas / And all of them were good) from album track "Am Landwehrkanal" could easily be perceived as the band's description of itself. The sum total is a special compilation: Alles In Allem, Einstürzende Neubauten's first regular studio album in 12 years, presents an incomparable band that defies categorization to create a genre all its own.

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO Pink Lady Lemonade - You're From Outer Space 2LP
First time on vinyl. Originally released as a CD only album on Riot Season back in 2008 and out of print ever since. Fourteen years later it's finally getting the double vinyl release it fully deserves. Now expanded, and with new artwork Pink Lady Lemonade - You're From Outer Space really could be Acid Mothers Temple's first "summer album". Here, Acid Mothers Temple's most representative song "Pink Lady Lemonade" is dismantled and reconstructed as a blissful ecstatic psychedelic trip where chaos and silence intersect. These were the first Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno studio recordings since the addition of Pikachu, drummer and vocalist with Osaka grenade-girl duo Afrirampo. The popular AMT standard "Pink Lady Lemonade" showcases a 21st century acid rock update on the '60s San Francisco psychedelic sound. This one doesn't reach in the red status often -- it's a more out-there trippy ride. But when it does finally soar, Kawabata Makoto's guitar has never sounded more alive. Gatefold sleeve; clear vinyl; edition of 350.Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno: Pikachu - drums, voice, cosmic shaman; Tabata Mitsuru - bass, voice, malatab; Higashi Hiroshi - synthesizer, dancin'king; Shimura Koji - drums, Latino cool; Kawabata Makoto - guitar, voice, electronics, speed guru; Audrey Ginestet - voice, cosmos.

SAND North Atlantic Raven (Orange and White Vinyl) LP
2022 restock; orange and white LP version in deluxe heavy-duty sleeve. Limited numbered edition of 500. Previously unreleased album by German trio Sand, composed and recorded in 1973, '75, and '76. The once-croaking raven now flies silently over the ocean, higher and higher. Where are you rolling, sun-ball, and why don't you fall? The sandy Golem crumbled into dust. His brave struggle against the mighty forces of darkness soon dissolved in voiceless space. There is something magical and inexplicable in creation, and Sand absolutely manifest these mysterious phenomena. Storytellers, musicians, shamans, geniuses -- Sand were known, at the end of the '60s, as P.O.T. (Part of Time). Then Sand -- Ludwig Papenberg, his brother Ulrich Papenberg, and Johannes Vester -- developed a more avant-gardist, proto-industrial, visionary, experimental approach, becoming a truly unique entity in the history of music. Not dependent on a classic krautrock style, Sand is nevertheless part of this movement of German cosmic/psychedelic bands, in addition to being the originators of proto-industrial musics. Johannes Vester: vocals, guitar, VCS3. Ludwig Papenberg: congas, VCS3, drum box, guitar, organ. Ulrich Papenberg: bass. Guests on "High Tension": Klaus Pankau, electric guitar; Micky Westphal, bass; Dietmar Burmeister, drums. Cover painting by Babs Santini.

The New York City five-piece had found some success playing covers of straight-ahead rock 'n' roll at gigs in the East Village, but tensions within the group were steadily tearing them apart. The lead singer, Simeon Coxe III, had gotten his hands on a vintage '40s audio oscillator and was insisting that it become a part of the show. The rest of the band was understandably upset - this was more than a decade before electronic music would become an accepted practice. Before long, the band was down to two members, Simeon, and drummer Danny Taylor. Now with full control, the two members re-christened themselves the Silver Apples and set about releasing one of history's great forgotten albums, their self-titled debut. Silver Apples is a record that reached far ahead of its time. It's not surprising then, in a year when the airwaves were still dominated by Motown and the Beatles (whose experimentation was tame by comparison), that it failed to garner much of an audience. Even now, nearly 40 years later, the record sounds fresh and unconventional - in 1968 there simply wasn't anything else like it." --Adam Bunch, Crawdaddy! (2007)

SAND Vibrating Cloud 2LP
2022 restock; double LP version. Over five decades Sand is a timeless narrative machine full of pictures and scenarios, each title a unique piece that stands alone. The Vibrating Cloud floats powerfully across the vast expanses of sand, telling stories of confusion and aberration, rape of the planet, of the tenderness, hidden power and fragility of existence, the voracious digital demons, the loss of innocence in a surreal drama we call: World. Sand started with the Golem, the analog primitive robot that became independent and out of control. A hybrid creature related to Enki Bilal's mutants, androids, animal humans or automatons. Sand is the stage of the shadow struggles of Don Quixote, Faust's disappointed departure from science and the search for the infinite vastness of nature. The cunning, slyness and sophistication of the Mephisto in the big cities, the black town which has become an enemy habitat, and which produces people without earth, air pirates on air and passengers in circulation. The seductive Pandora, carrying in her box all the evils and hopes of this world, The Flying Dutchman's ghost ship roaming the seas. Sand is the story of the stranded and stuck but also the hopeful children's souls. The stories go from the me through the you to the we. So, in Vibrating Cloud, Sand and Enki Bilal merge into one psychedelic fiction. Sand kaleidoscopically reflects the facets of a darkened and then enlightened existence of man and the world and immerses himself musically and narratively in the spheres of Enki Bilal's mythology, conspiracy history, mixed-up comedy, science fiction and poetry. As Enki Bilal aptly put it: "I would say that this is a prospective reflection on our present world but in a different way in the future."

NURSE WITH WOUND Homotopy To Marie 2LP
2022 restock. Rotorelief present a reissue of Homotopy To Marie. the fifth album by Nurse With Wound, originally released in 1982. Music and sleeve created by Steven Stapleton. The album is "a step on from the Dadaist rock of Merzbild Schwet, with much use of tape manipulation and classical avant-garde techniques". The album, which combines tape edits with resonating gong tones and disembodied children's voices to create a sonic collage, is far removed from the harsh improvisations of the group's early albums. The title of the brief closing track derives from a passage from "Les Chants de Maldoror" (1869), a surreal poetic novel written by Le Comte de Lautréamont. This appropriation of a phrase from Maldoror is shared in common with the title of Nurse With Wound's debut album, Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella (1979); both phrases appear in Lautréamont's work. The album was first issued on Stapleton's own United Dairies label on vinyl, cassette, and later in remastered compact disc including an extra track "Astral Dustbin Dirge". This masterpiece reissue is the official full, double album from the original recording sessions. The four tracks from the original LP are accompanied by additional recordings from the same period. This second, double album masterpiece in the "silver collection" of Nurse With Wound albums, is a technically better, crystal clear performance, in comparison to the original 1982 cut. Comes one black vinyl (ROTOR 070LP) and silver-and-black vinyl (ROTOR 070SIL-LP).

LANHAM, ERIC Objet Dirt LP
New solo album by Eric Lanham (aka Carl Calm) of the Caboladies. Over the past fifteen years, Florida-based multi-instrumentalist Eric Lanham has quietly generated a diverse and remarkable body of work both as a solo artist and in group settings. From the disorienting drone/collage ecstasies of Caboladies, his trio with Christopher Bush (Flanger Magazine) and Ben Zoeller, to wildly divergent solo flights under both his own name and as Carl Calm, Lanham's carefully meted out recordings display the talents of a chameleonic composer who is as capable a sound designer as he is unconcerned with trend in experimental electronic music or notions of prolific-ness. Objet Dirt arrives ten years after The Sincere Interruption (SP 021LP,2012), his excellent long-player for Spectrum Spools imprint. Captured live, these compositions are brimming with kinetic, elastic, off-grid rhythms, an articulate and enigmatic language that restlessly darts around the stereo field. Of the collection, Lanham says "I haven't made a single piece of music that sounds like this since and it is hard to imagine doing so again." If this is the case, the 20+ minute closer is a formidable final document. At once chaotic and tightly controlled, it is a torrent of coiling low-end, submerged and stretched rhythms, and seething high-end filigree that is as indebted to the hungry ghosts of free improvisation as it is anything resembling techno. Includes download code; edition of 300.

AVENGERS, THE The American In Me 7"
2022 repress. "Few first wave California punk bands burned as brightly as The Avengers. Formed in San Francisco during 1977's Summer of Hate, they swiftly ascended to the top of the West Coast scene and earned the coveted support slot for The Sex Pistols' final concert in January 1978. The Avengers' frenetic performance at Winterland made quite an impression on Pistols guitarist Steve Jones who offered to record the group. From the Jones produced sessions, 'The American In Me' remains an unmistakable anthem. Embodying the punk zeitgeist, singer Penelope Houston fiercely declares, 'Ask not what you can do for your country, what's your country been doing to you.' The original White Noise EP version of 'The American In Me' is paired with 'Uh-Oh,' featuring Jones on piano and bravely demonstrating Me Too sentiments four decades earlier. Comp-only track 'Cheap Tragedies' closes this reimagined lost-single set. The American In Me perfectly captures The Avengers' dynamic power -- frustration, style and passion forged into some of the most pivotal sounds of punk's formative era."

The original recordings of the album took place the same year at Bleibeil Studios, Berlin. Engineered by Bernd Jestram. Restoration and mastering by Detlef Funder at Paraschall, Düsseldorf in 2022. Includes printed inner sleeve and download code; edition of 300."19 or 20 years, what difference does it make if the beautiful things in life are able to transport us back to Year Zero -- again and again. The moment when this album was created. It is the timeless horizon that motivates the artist. 'Dad, what's the line doing there?' -- a good start for a story. Philippe Poirier and Stefan Schneider recount tales of slow travel, far beyond the known continents. The adventures of a certain Corto Maltese, mysterious love stories in long forgotten harbors. A love that creates its own time, just like a chess game, an ocean liner or propeller airplanes. The enthusiasm for cartography which Philippe Poirier and Stefan Schneider share, time and again, similar to dream. The dream of an idea, of exploration, of finding. The first lines of a drawing that become the great painting. The sequences and the words which design a world in its own right. A tremendous reservoir and my old friend knows that there is an ideal companion for every journey. This time Philippe Poirier is a narrator who finds a sound like sand flowing through fingers and who knows how deep each object accompanies each love. DORAU, ANDREAS Ich bin der Eine von uns Beiden CD
Tapete Records present a reissue of Andreas Dorau's Ich bin der Eine von uns Beiden, originally released in 2005 on Mute. Includes such classics as "Kein Liebeslied", "40 Frauen", and "Im September". "Ihr brüllt von Liebe in engen Gewändern / Doch einer wie ich will die Welt noch verändern", sings Andreas Dorau on "Kein Liebeslied", written with Sven Regener. Love was not his chosen subject, he wanted to sing of other things -- wild boar ("Schwarze Furchen"), processions ("40 Frauen"), and the back house where the people come out the front ("Hinterhaus"). It was ever so. The maestro spent eight long years working on his so-called "wild boar record", a disc which featured Wolfgang Müller, Justus Köhncke, Carsten "Erobique" Meyer, and Paul Kominek, along with Andreas and Dorau. The concept of the album revolved around the separation of these last two participants. An interesting idea on paper --tender songs written by Andreas the artist, heavy bass drummed out by Dorau the party animal. "IbdEvuB" was conceived as an extraordinary album of severance. Fine on paper, yes, but in practice? ... Well, it took eight years, didn't it? Eight years of nerve-shredding fiddling around, but ultimately well worth the effort. House, soft rock, disco, glam pop, blended into a dazzling whole of Andreas and Dorau. Some of it recorded and produced in the garage, the rest in the legendary Can Studio in Weilerswist. Did Andreas and Dorau change the world with Ich bin der Eine von uns Beiden? Probably not, but they did manage to create a magnificent, timeless, electronic pop album which merits rediscovery. That's something! Remastered.

FOYER DES ARTS Die John-Peel-Session 12"
The author Max Goldt is well known to the general public. Not so the musician Max Goldt, who came across the guitarist and songwriter Gerd Pasemann through a classified ad in 1978. Their joint collaboration in the 1980s resulted in the musically contrasting project Foyer des Arts: "Melancholic, sometimes resigned tracks alternated as a matter of course with comic and surreal ones," wrote Max Goldt in the booklet to his CD box set Draußen die herrliche Sonne. In 1986, after a two-year delay, Foyer des Arts released their sophomore album Die Unfähigkeit zu Frühstücken. BBC Radio DJ John Peel liked Foyer des Arts so much that he not only played all the songs from the album Die Unfähigkeit zu Frühstücken several times on his show. Gerd Pasemann and Max Goldt were ultimately invited to record a (John) Peel Session, a rare and distinguished honor for a German-speaking band. The Berlin duo made their way to London in October 1986, where they were joined by three members of The Higsons, an energetic combo with plenty of experience as session musicians. Indeed, they only needed one rehearsal to learn the four songs that Foyer des Arts brought with them, two from the aforementioned album and two brand new tunes: "Könnten Bienen Fliegen" and "Frauen In Frieden Und Freiheit". Recording took place the following afternoon in the legendary Maida Vale Studio 4, the regular home for the Peel Sessions. "The musicians were excellent and the atmosphere was really relaxed," Max Goldt recalls, "and afterwards we met John Peel in his favorite pub, The Vine Bar." In the year 2000 Goldt asked the BBC what had happened to the session tapes, only to learn that they had probably been wiped. This was not a huge surprise, as the BBC archives were notoriously unreliable. Entire Dusty Springfield shows disappeared, apparently deleted. Twenty years later, the Cologne-based sound engineer Tom Morgenstern, with the help of a colleague from the BBC, managed to unearth the lost tapes. And here they are, 35 years on, as fresh as the day they were made.

CHRISTIANSEN, HENNING Op. 163 Penthesilea: The Reality Is A Ghost In My Mind / In Penthesileas Hohle (In Penthesilea's Cave) 2LP
Beautiful, haunting, and somber, this double-LP presents the entire recording from Henning Christiansen's Heinrich von Kleist tribute at Rene Block's Rosenfest festival, Berlin, 1984. The Reality Is A Ghost In My Mind (first LP) is a work that unfolds patiently with a mix of field recordings; wind, bird song and the sound of snow being crushed underfoot all unite in a foreboding atmosphere. In Penthesileas Höhle (second LP) features electronic treatments to the original field recordings found on The Reality Is A Ghost In My Mind, a representation of psychological reorientation perhaps? A deep ground tone (or "root" as Henning calls it) leads the listener through a variety of realistic and unrealistic environments. As Henning says in his essay reprinted on the back sleeve: "Then comes a section where the field recordings of the sea, the storm, birds, cars and other things, are built together so that the realism of these sounds become unreal. For example, the cars drive into the sea and the birds are singing within the storm. When you hear footsteps in the show, it's Kleist sneaking past Deutsche Schauspielhaus. When you hear a deep, human sleeping noise, it's Achilles sleeping. When you hear hammering it's the weapon smith working. When you hear a stone being thrown it means the unanswered question: 'Who threw the first stone?' These recordings lead to the finale where Carla Tatò's haunted vocals into her singing mournfully along with Jan Tilman Schade's violoncello and tuba, then a chainsaw appears." A previously unreleased project of Henning Christiansen, monumental in scope, traversing years, countries and now, formats. Pentheseila is one of the most ambitious works in the entire Henning Christiansen oeuvre. A large-scale work from the mid-eighties based on the play of the same name by Heinrich von Kleist (1808). Both Henning and his widow, Ursula Reuter Christiansen, were enthusiastic about Kleist's text, both making works around the themes within this portent text. Henning Christiansen first developed a work around this text for the Rosenfest festival performed in Berlin in 1984. Rosenfest was curated by René Block and featured a variety of composers presenting works in response to Kleist's work including Robert Ashley, "Blue" Gene Tyranny etc. Henning formulated a composition utilizing tape, field recordings, voice, soprano, and violoncello alongside the homemade instruments of Werner Durand. The live presentation was then expanded upon and first performed two years later at Teatro Olímpico, Rome on the November 8th, 1986 as directed by Carlo Quartucci. Along with the five-CD set (HC 005CD) sharing the four and a half hour backing track prepared for the Teatro Olímpico performance in Rome in 1986, these releases make up a substantial overview of one of the most significant works in the entire Christiansen canon. Includes writings Ursula Reuter Christiansen and Henning Christiansen and artwork by Ursula Reuter Christiansen. Small excerpts of these works previously appeared on one of the 7"s in the Rosenfest Berlin 1984 catalog (Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD) and the compilation CD Ghosts And Monsters: Technology And Personality In Contemporary Music (1999).

CHRISTIANSEN, HENNING Op. 1984 (160C) Goodday, Mr Orwell, Green Ear-Year CD
Previously unreleased Henning Christiansen work from 1984. A dedication to George Orwell. Someone he was very fond of. In 1977 Henning visited the USSR only to become a staunch anti-Stalinist. A pro Trotskyite who, when visiting the USA, also saw Big Brother watching the US in the same way in the USSR through media and the journalists that worked for each side to manipulate the masses. Henning painted his ear green that year because he wanted to listen to nature and not the media and politicians. Performed at the Møn Musikfestival in the green ear year, 1984 with his first son, Esben, a local celebrity for his work in rock music. Encountering this performance people were very upset that Esben was not playing the rock music he was known for resulting in them setting fires and yelling at our trusty duo throughout the performance. Henning and Esben continued until the end. This was the last performance Esben did, he never played rock music or performed again after this. The radio piece here was recorded on the Christiansen family farm on Møn and the also the local surroundings on Møn. Version 1. CHRISTIANSEN, HENNING To Look Inside Music 2CD
The Henning Christiansen Archive present a collection of previously unreleased "classical works" by Henning Christiansen, a large part of his oeuvre which has remained out of sight, until now. This 2CD compilation encompasses a variety of stylistic approaches written in the years from 1963 to 1988."This collection gathers music by Christiansen targeted on (in one sense or another) the concert hall. All the recordings presented here are previously unreleased. The majority of publicly available Christiansen recordings have focused on music related to dramatic works, soundtrack works, music made for and within artist performance and tape music. This time, Christiansen as composer is truly at the forefront. His voice is always recognizable even as his expressive range is surprisingly broad; his approach ranges from the conventional to the radical. Any niggling concert-hall questions about craft are settled, yet at the same time he continues to question the role of form and genre in music." --from the liner notes written by Ben Harper.

Produced by Daniel Löwenbrück/Edition Hans Pumpestok, København, in cooperation with Fondation Dubuffet, Paris. Double-CD in six-panel digipak in slipcase; includes 12-page booklet in French and English; edition of 600."... It's a curious feeling to implement and test a spontaneous form of orchestration with an artist who has such an extremely independent background. It really felt like we were experiencing an event of singular importance and significance. I can't say if this importance was greater than our own personal joy. But I do know that this music illuminated many ideas for me that had previously remained obscure. For me it remains a kind of phenomenal music, in the sense that in our productions the music became its own specific phenomenon, and yet one that was still connected to all the other sensorial phenomena... "--Asger Jorn (from the liner notes)Asger Jorn (1914-1973), was a Danish painter, sculptor, ceramic artist, author, and one of Scandinavia's most influential and internationally recognized artists. He was a founding member of the avantgarde movement COBRA and the Situationist International.Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) was a French painter, sculptor, lithographer and writer. He was one of the main protagonists of Art Brut (a term he invented in 1945).

SECOND HAND Reality LP
Trading Places present a reissue of Second Hand's Reality, originally released in 1968. Obscure prog rockers Second Hand began as the Next Collection, formed at a south London secondary school; engineer/manager Vic Keary scored them a contract with Polydor as the Moving Finger, but their legendary debut LP was credited to Second Hand, due to a rival Moving Finger. Channeling psych and spacey acid hues, there is blues-rock underpinning Bob Gibbons's guitar and keyboardist Ken Elliott helps aim the sound towards deep space; this edition features rare tracks "James In The Basement" and "I Am Nearly There" from a 1965 Next Collection single (backing Denis Couldry), already showing their freak-psych capabilities. An essential listen for all true prog connoisseurs. Licensed from Cherry Red.

SECOND HAND Death May Be Your Santa Claus LP
Trading Places present a reissue of Second Hand's Death May Be Your Santa Claus, originally released in 1971. After their excellent Polydor debut suffered from lack of promotion, Second Hand's sophomore LP surfaced on Mushroom, the noncommercial label formed by Vic Keary, Mike Craig, and Neil Richmond, allowing for unfettered experimentation. With George Hart on bass, new front man Rob Elliott, and drummer Kieran O'Connor on vibraphones, Ken Elliott takes melodic command on Mellotron, piano, and organ, the disc a freakily esoteric juggernaut. This lost masterwork here comes with rare bonus tracks "Dip It Out Of The Bog Fred", "Baby RU Anudder Monster?", and the orchestrated "Funeral", a scare 1972 single. Licensed from Cherry Red.

TRYP, THE My Brain Collapsed LP
Trading Places present a reissue of The Tryp's My Brain Collapsed, originally released in 1986. First vinyl edition. The roots of '80s English psychedelic freak band The Tryp lie in a hoax perpetuated by Steve Lines's indie mag Mardenbeat, based in the town of Calne in the Marden Delta, which reviewed a gig by a non-existent band; former JP Sunshine main man Rod Goodway and partner Christine Cotter then gave flesh to the beast with Lines and Paul Ricketts of Unhinged mag, cutting My Brain Collapsed as an exploration of mushroom-fueled mental instability. First issued on cassette label Mardentapes and later by Acid Tapes (just as Lines took over from Alan Duffy). A must have for all tryppers! Licensed from Cherry Red.

MINIMAL VIOLENCE DESTROY ---> [physical] REALITY [psychic] --- TRUST Phase Three 12"
As the z-axis of our planet tilts away, and a gulf of dusty earth, air and searing fire is revealed before us, Minimal Violence holds an unflinching stare, unveiling Phase Three in an act of pure psychic release. Consecutive of the destruction of Phase One (TRESOR 317EP) and the restructuring of Phase Two (TRESOR 317EP) it only seems appropriate that the third phase of the series finds the project reaching a state of transcendence and transition as it also aligns with the shift from a duo to the solo venture of Ash Luk following the departure of co-founder Lida P. This third EP of the DESTROY ---> [physical] REALITY [psychic] --- TRUST series launches straight into the 145 bpm stomper Flatline. It is a track founded by a family spirit, with lyrics co-written with Luk's mother and their stepfather Mad Johnny on vocals and guitar. It draws a hoarse chant of passion, "... nothing matters ... I still love you ... resuscitation ... resurrection ..." in answer to arching melodic euphoria. "Cold (sex)" follows down a scorched earth driveway into distorted whistles, detuned melodies and some of the best sequencer abuse out there. "We Suffocate on the Violence of Light" reveals perhaps the finest expedition so far in Minimal Violence's particular vein of acid-singed euphoric trance. Its synths smeared and merged unholy, where the drums meddle with the tensions between drum and bass and nail to the ground four to the floor rhythm. "Focus On That Form" pummels hard within a deep noise volley, scratching hard to rid its environments of any longer lasting luster. As ever, the transformative sound of Minimal Violence emerges deep from fire. Denying any uncertain embers an escape route, Luk casts anew from a seemingly unending source of unique energy. "Flatline" features Mad Johnny.

YAMILA Visions LP
Yamila reveals her most intimate catharsis in Visions, an album that brings together and provokes the hallucinatory powers of music. Like an ancient herald, she announces the profound feminine mystique while crossing epic melodies full of pleasure and pain. This album is a journey that prodigiously unites baroque accents, Spanish folklore -- such as flamenco -- and contemporary electronic music. Her voice and music -- sometimes torn and others buoyant -- could resemble the score for a biblical passage (ie visions of the Apocalypse), for they are overflowing with physical ecstasy and sounds that one can touch. Visions is composed of different forms and rhythms. Pieces like "Visions V" evolve intensely with sharp and systematized hits -- powerful layers that bring us closer to Alessando Cortini's Forse era. "Visions II", for its part, shares intensity and power with flamenco ritual patterns, as if it were an old Andalusian scene dripping with oscillations and electric shocks. Yet there are luminous vocal pieces such as "Visions I" (featuring Rafael Anton Irisarri), inspired by Manuel de Falla's Suite Española composed in 1922. Here, an aural chiaroscuro with beautiful voices and choirs is deeply fused with daring drones. And it is in the ensemble of moments of Visions where Yamila's conceptual axis is rendered solid. Pain and glory, lacerating religiosity, feminism cauterized by power, and hallucinations as a source (or pretext/tool) to be heard. Yamila exhibits a profuse aesthetic with her music that calls for a look at the far-past with romanticism and nostalgia. Visions is radiant, intense. A unique album. All songs written and performed by Yamila Ríos (Spain), except "Visions I", which features Rafael Anton Irisarri. Recorded between the Swedish winter and the Belgian countryside. Additional musicians: Simbad - guitar; Vera Cavallin - harp. Mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studio, New York. Photos by Virginia Rota in Madrid. Design by Daniel Castrejón in Mexico City. Transparent blue vinyl; gatefold sleeve; edition of 500.

YANO, AKIKO Iroha Ni Konpeitou LP
2022 repress; LP version. Obi strip; Includes insert. Wewantsounds present a reissue of Akiko Yano's Iroha Ni Konpeitou, originally released in 1977. Another superb Akiko Yano album and one of her funkiest, highlighting her singing and songwriting talents. Iroha Ni Konpeitou is perhaps Akiko Yano's best-known album in the Western world not just because of its striking front cover -- a shot by famed photographer Bishin Jumonji featuring Akiko holding an inflatable dolphin. A slick mix of Japanese pop and New York funk, the album was recorded in Tokyo except for the title track which was recorded in NYC with an all-star line-up consisting of Rick Marotta, David Spinozza, Will Lee, and Nicky Marrero. For the rest of the album, Akiko is accompanied by some of the best musicians from the Tokyo music scene gravitating around the groups Happy End and Tin Pan Alley: the ubiquitous Haruomi Hosono on bass, Tatsuo Hayashi on drums, Shigeru Suzuki on guitar, to name just a few. Interestingly, two Hosono compositions are featured on the album: "Ai Ai Gasa" which he recorded on his 1973 landmark debut Hosono House and "Hourou" originally recorded in '75 by singer and musician Chu Kosaka, on the eponymous album Horo. Last but not least, Hideki Matsutake is handling the keyboard programming duties on the album as Yano is playing a wide array of keyboards: Moog IIIc, Mini Moog, String Ensemble, on top of the Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, and Yamaha CP7C. Matsutake would soon become programmer in chief for Yellow Magic Orchestra, touring and playing with them around the world (like Yano herself). Although the album feels very accessible and funky, there are complex keyboard layers underneath as on the first short introduction "KAWAJI", a short electro fantasy, or on such tracks as "Ai Ai Gasa" and "Kino Wa Mou" on which Akiko is playing bass with her Moog, making the album a richly textured and inventive one once you scratch its surface. The tracks on the album flow effortlessly also highlighting Akiko Yano's superb songwriting and knack for creating fascinating pop song. "Iroha Ni Konpeitou" sounds as fresh and beautiful as when it first came out more than forty years ago and will please the growing circle of Akiko Yano fans around the world as a welcome addition to her brilliant discography. Remastered sound. First release outside of Japan.

FAIRUZ Wahdon LP
2022 repress. Wewantsounds continues to pursue its exploration of great Lebanese music with the reissue of Wahdon, released in 1978 by legendary Middle Eastern diva Fairuz and recorded during the Abu Ali sessions (WWSLP 021LP). The album includes the Lebanese dancefloor cult classic, "Al Bostah". 1978 was a turning point for the Lebanese diva. The '70s had seen her rise as an international star, playing sold out concerts in the US and in Europe, and appearing on national TV in France. She had had a long-lasting artistic collaboration with her husband Assi Rahbani and his brother Elias (aka The Rahbani Brothers) who, together, had penned most of the singer's classics. In 1978, Assi who had suffered a brain hemorrhage in 1972 got weaker and the collaboration finally ended (together with their personal relationship). Their 22-year-old son Ziad took over Fairuz's musical reins and set to work on their first album together, Wahdon ("Alone"), serving as her mother's producer, composer and musical director. Wahdon typifies this key moment in Fairuz's career when she switched from traditional to more modern arrangements. The first side of the album encapsulates the more traditional side of the singer with such mesmerizing songs as "Habaitak Ta Neseet Al Naoum" (I Loved You So Much I Forgot To Sleep) or "Ana Indi Haneen" (I'm Nostalgic), filled with gorgeous Arabic strings and percussion. The second side though is a whole different affair. Recorded in Athens at the EMI Greece studio at the same time as the Abu Ali sessions, the two long tracks brings a hipper, contemporary funk and disco feel that has made the album such a collector's item with DJs and diggers around the world. Clocking at almost nine minutes "Al Bostah" (The Bus) tells the story a woman in love remembering a bus journey with her lover under a scorching heat, enhanced by an hypnotic up-tempo funkified disco beat, while "Wahdon" brings a slower and jazzier underlay to Fairuz's superb singing. These tracks shocked some of the diva's fans at the time but they've since passed the test of time and have become highly sought after. Whadon has since become both a classic Fairuz album and a cult Ziad Rahbani production that Wewantsounds is delighted to bring to a wider audience for the first time.

NARDINI, NINO Musique Pour Le Futur LP
Limited 2022 restock. We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present a reissue of Nino Nardini's e Musique Pour Le Futur, originally released in 1970. An experimental, musique concrete, sci-fi masterpiece, available for the first time since 1970. Originally recorded for Crea Sound Ltd., a sub-label of Louis Delacour's Neuilly imprint, Musique Pour Le Futur finds the French composer, arranger, producer, possible time-traveler, and all around music library legend Nino Nardini experimenting with synthesizers, percussions, prepared piano, echo, and special effects. Fans of electronic oddities, eerie cinematic audio-landscapes, Piero Umiliani, or Bernard Parmegiani, will rejoice at this full-length musical adventure that could very well be the soundtrack for a film in which characters from a '70s Italian horror movie visit a distant (forbidden) planet from a '50s sci-movie. It's bizarre, hypnotizing, slightly spooky, always out-of-this-world, and goddamn brilliant. Nino Nardini, also known as Georges Teperino, had a very fruitful career in library music, much like longtime collaborator Roger Roger. He composed a very large amount of works for French and British libraries which continues to be featured in numerous programs (radio, TV, films) all around the world. His passion for electronic music experimentations began in the late '60s and kept going until the '80s. Housed in a phosphorescent glow-in-the-dark, heavy cardboard sleeve.

SPOERRI, BRUNO Voice Of Taurus LP
Limited 2022 restock. We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present a reissue of the highly sought-after electronic/sci-fi disco/proto-techno/ambient masterpiece Voice Of Taurus by Swiss music pioneer and synth super wizard Bruno Spoerri, available on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1978. Surrounded with a formidable family of legendary synthesizers, primitive modulators, and audio gear -- transformed and customized à la Spoerri --, armed with an extraordinary talent for improvisation, and deeply inspired by the likes of Wendy Carlos, Pierre Schaeffer, and the then freshly released Close Encounter of the Third Kind (1977), Bruno Spoerri envisioned Voice Of Taurus as "electronic pop conceived using an experimental and jazz approach". The result is an out-of-this-world sonic adventure where early techno sounds blend with synth-based sci-fi soundtrack vibes, krautrock explorations, and retro-futuristic disco madness. It's unique, catchy, cosmic, and meditative -- it's a must have for all record collectors of the galaxy... welcome to Planet Spoerri. Still very active recording, touring, and collaborating (with Julian Sartorius, Franz Treichler of Young Gods, Marco Repetto of Grauzone, Roger Girod, to name a few), Bruno Spoerri is a multiple award-winning Swiss music icon, whose career started in the 1950s. His works spans jazz, electronic music, film, and TV work, and everything in between. Improvisational maestro and synthesizer mega-connoisseur, Mr. Spoerri has influenced an entire generation of producers and musicians -- even Jay-Z sampled him. Housed in a 350 gram jacket; Includes new liner notes.
