BROKAW, CHRIS Puritan LP
2022 repress, 2021 release. "Chris Brokaw is the consummate underground rock musician. In a career spanning thirty-plus years he has been in countless bands (Come, Codeine and The Lemonheads, to name a few) has been a sideman with everyone from Thurston Moore to GG Allin, pounded countless stages on nonstop tours, and played on over seventy recordings. Puritan is his tenth solo album and it's a killer. From the hypnotic repetition on the extended instrumental outro of title-track opener 'Puritan', the wounded grace of 'Depending', to the fragile beauty of the Velvets-esque duet with Claudia Groom, 'I'm the Only One for You', and the ghost of Alex Chilton echoing through 'The Bragging Rights', onto the GBV-like firestorm of 'Periscope Kids', and ending with the On The Beach era Neil Young minimal strum of his cover of Karl Hendricks' 'The Night Has No Eyes', Brokaw has crafted an understated masterpiece. Puritan is an album that is all heartache and rebirth, resignation and joy, the kind of record that is so needed but all too rare these days. A classic from front to back." --Mark Lanegan, 2020

FLORRY Big Fall LP
2021 release. "Gram Parsons coined the phrase 'Cosmic American Music' to describe the synthesis of country, blues, rock and soul that he traded in. Sheridan Frances 'Francie' Medosch wouldn't be born for another 28 years after Parsons' 1973 death, but that Cosmic American sound was waiting for her all the same. On Big Fall, she embraces it like an old friend. Medosch grew up outside of Philadelphia in a family home that encompassed three cats, a dog and a pig. Her mom loved music; she played all kinds of stuff around the house, but mostly alt-country like Gillian Welch and Wilco. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, the seminal 2002 album by the latter became formative to a young Francie's love of music -- 'I never really got into Sgt Pepper or anything, so I think that album kinda took the place of that.' She learned violin for a while, then she was a natural on piano, but that stuff bored her. Eventually, her mom bought her a guitar. 'I was actually very bummed out at first. I think I wanted an Xbox or something that year. But I came around to it very quickly,' she laughs. As a teenager she got into obscure underground rock and power pop, influences she channeled in the band she initially named Francie Cool, which would later transition into Florry (these days it's a solo project, in which she's backed by Jared Radichel on bass, John Murray on guitar and Joey Sullivan on drums). In 2018, at the age of 17, Medosch put out her debut Florry album Brown Bunny (Sister Polygon). The following year, she went out to Willow, New York -- a tiny hamlet outside of Woodstock -- and recorded a follow-up album with producer Paco Cathcart that she ended up shelving. Backed by Theo Woodward on drums and Pete Gill on bass, it was dark, and angsty, consisting of songs written between the ages of 16 and 18 and reflecting the depression that defined that time for her. During the pandemic, she began writing again. Her headspace had changed a lot. She was much happier and embraced 'absurdist existentialism' -- 'where you realize that nothing really has any meaning, and that it's pretty funny that we're here at all.' She was also bored of indie rock, and for her new songs she looked towards her upbringing among country and folk music, and her fascination with Parsons' Cosmic American Music. 'There's something about that kind of music that just makes me feel really good inside,' she says. Her main goal was just to write songs that felt good, that translated her newfound positivity. 'That was the biggest change for me, just writing and playing music when I'm feeling good, instead of when I'm feeling sad.' With six of those songs home-recorded with the early iteration of her new lineup, she pulled another four from the Willow sessions, a way of closing one chapter and opening a new one. There's a clear split between the old songs -- dark, sad, confused -- and the new -- self-assured, fun, free. Opening track 'You Don't Know' was the last one to be written, and the one that Medosch feels most accurately captured the spirit of Cosmic American Music. It's a Neil Young-indebted, pedal steel-adorned country tune, the melody of which was born from a dream Medosch had about the Staple Singers. She addresses a loved one who is 'fucking their life up': 'You don't know what you're doing / And you're hurting so many people'. Meanwhile, Medosch channels traditional country with the honky-tonk piano of 'Say Your Prayers' and the rollicking bassline of the title track 'Big Fall'. On both, she is full of optimism, claiming the idea of a joyful future with exuberance. These are the record's lightest moments; its heaviest are the Elliott Smith-esque 'Dream Diary/Growth' and the slowcore closing track 'Lovely', where Medosch conducts a bitter post-mortem on a toxic friendship, singing despairingly: 'When you tell me to quit being so loud, I will / When you tell me to quit being myself, I will'. It ends the album by 'collapsing in on itself', with a sudden compressed crunch followed by interlocking guitars that spiral towards the song's conclusion like they're circling a drain. Musically, Medosch comes all the way out of left field on the punky 'Older Girlfriend' and the dance track 'Everyone I Love You'; these feel like moments of total unbridled glee. Of the latter, which was influenced by both Philadelphia's club and rave scene and Neil Young's 1982 album Trans, Medosch says, 'For like a month, it was all me and my friends would listen to, 'cause everyone was so pumped up on it. Without a doubt, it's the weirdest track on the album. But I love that song.' The emotional heart of the album is arguably 'Jane', one of the Willow tracks, which recounts a major turning point for Medosch. In the lowest depths of depression, she watched Jane, the 2017 documentary on Jane Goodall. In the theater, she broke down in tears as she saw the passion and pride with which Goodall spoke about her work. In that instant, Medosch knew that was what she wanted for herself. To love herself; to be proud of who she was and what she had done. Now here she is, presenting Big Fall to the world, and she's proud." --Mia Hughes

DEAD SPACE, THE Chlorine Sleep LP
2021 release. "After a six-year absence, The Dead Space returns with Chlorine Sleep. Recorded days before their breakup in 2015, this album marks a turning point, both for its the trio of Quin Galavis, Garrett Haden and Jenny Arthur, as well as for their collective scene in Austin, Texas. The Dead Space never quite fit in since forming in 2008, and never really cared to. The trio quietly managed to craft their own brand of tightly wound art rock, equal parts bleak and brooding, but presented in stark tones. Whether their allergy to artifice was a roadblock, in keeping with their character or some combination of both, it's hard to say. Either way, the Dead Space were very much on the outside looking in prior to the release of their well-received first album, 2014's Faker. And when it finally seemed they could reach a broader audience, they did what any good band should do -- they broke up. Slightly before that, however, the band returned to Ian Rundell's Second Hand Tacos studio to record Chlorine Sleep. The record carries the band's history forward with arduous blasts of force, contrasting with stark, lean efficiency, and exposes a sense of fragility and vulnerability. With Garrett Hadden's return to Texas, preparation to return to the stage later this year and next with a renewed vision and sense of purpose, The Dead Space's ferocious sophomore effort that expands on previous themes while forging a new path all its own. It's great to have them back."

WINGED WHEEL No Island LP
"Winged Wheel is made up of four musicians whose worlds have intersected for years without them ever all being in the same room. Cory Plump (Spray Paint, Expensive Shit), Whitney Johnson (Matchess, Damiana), Fred Thomas (Tyvek, Idle Ray), and Matthew Rolin (Powers/Rolin Duo, solo) have been longtime participants in various diy communities, crossing each other's paths through shared gigs, working on releases, or taking the stage at Cory's small upstate NY bar. Each player has developed their own personal practice of improvisation and home-recording, and Winged Wheel began by chance when Cory asked Fred to send over some rawly recorded drum loops to jam over. Cory tracked rangy guitar and bass parts over these repetitive loops and songs slowly started taking shape. Matthew's guitar layers took these foundations to a whole new level, and Whitney's submerged vocal tracks solidified everything, elevating the project from a soup of partially formed ideas into something intelligible. The entire album was written, recorded, and mixed in remote collaboration, eventually turning into a balancing act of precisely arranging sonic details and maintaining the formless excitement the music began as. This paradoxical process can be heard in the final form of the album, a continuous zone that manages to be strange and amorphous while still carving out space for four distinctive musical personalities. It's a sound that hovers and stumbles as often as it takes declarative turns in unexpected directions, the circles getting smaller the closer you zoom in."

LEWSBERG In Your Hands LP
"Sometimes change comes with big shocks, sometimes it comes with small steps. On In Your Hands, Lewsberg's new album, a bit of both seems to be happening. Take the second song, 'The Corner'. A remarkably discreet song: a violin plays a simple melody; a gentle drum loop keeps its finger on the pulse. 'This brick is a brick to build', it sounds, though a little later: 'This brick is a brick to throw'. A brick offers many possibilities, for those who want to see it. One time as a part of something bigger to come, the next time just as a simple stone, left on the ground. After all, most things are relative. Sometimes one can achieve more by breaking something than by building something. If you think you can determine which of the two is needed, you'd be fooling yourself. In Your Hands embodies the moment when all the bricks are there, but the wall has yet to be built. It's a moment with perspective, a moment where everything still seems possible, but caution is advised. The album sounds both smaller and more spacious than the previous albums. Guitar chords are plucked instead of fiercely struck, the bass guitar is given more room for melodic explorations, the drum kit is dismantled to just a tom and a tambourine. There is doubt in the lyrics, but it's a strong kind of doubt. A doubt that can stand in the way of a wrong decision but also invite for a good conversation. The old Lewsberg has been professionally demolished and the building blocks are on display. Ready for future applications and already finished at the same time. In Your Hands is therefore an ode to the potential and a call to carefully give way to it. Just what we need right now. But if I were to claim this so boldly, I wouldn't have learned much from Lewsberg." --Niek Hilkmann, October 2021

COYNE, KEVIN Case History LP
2022 restock. "Case History is the debut solo release from bluesy British singer-songwriter Kevin Coyne (originally released on John Peel's Dandelion label in 1972). Primarily just guitar and vocals, Case History is a powerful album from a very unique voice who was celebrated by musicians as wide ranging as John Lydon, Sting, and the Mekons. Coyne, who passed away in 2004, spent much of the '60s working with the mentally disabled, and his songwriting is informed by a deep concern for the plight and mistreatment of those who have been tossed off by society. A bit of an outsider himself, he eschewed record industry pressure and maintained focus on his singular artistic vision. Another under-appreciated classic." On 180 gram vinyl.

2015 release, last copies... Scottish techno mainstay Stephen Brown presents Mirage for Mojuba sublabel a.r.t.less following his huge 2014 Illuminance EP (ARTLESS 2191EP) and his 2015 Invisible Light EP for the magnificent Indigo Aera. The A-side features a killer techno tune called "2FM" in finest Robert Hood/M-Plant tradition. The B-side's "Sensual Healing" is a very emotional, synth-laden track that will work perfectly for those opening or closing set moments when everyone is in the zone, eyes closed, floating on the dancefloor.

RHABDOMANTIC ORCHESTRA Almagre LP
Manuel Volpe (Rhabdomantic Orchestra) about this album: "This album is a music novel inspired by surrealism and South American magic realism. Every instrument acts as a character in action and its narrative set is studied to give an imaginary experience during the listening. The main themes are the transformation, the spiritual awakening and the political consciousness, the sublime and the worldly. To write it I've studied lot of different music formulas from all over the world (Afrobeat, Sufí music, Balinese gamelan, Colombian corrulao, merengue, Pygmies poliphonies, contemporary... etc.) with the aim to avoid a genre-oriented music but to reach a resume, something like a universal in music."

CORNER, PHILIP The Judson Years 3CD BOX
2022 restock. It's hard to overstate the importance of Philip Corner. For more than half a century he has been a cornerstone of the American musical avant-garde. Once a student of Otto Leuning, Henry Cowell, Olivier Messiaen, and Dorothy Taubman. A founding member of Fluxus, Corner made waves fast, creating a body of singular work, both on his own and within ensembles like Gamelan Son of Lion and Tone Roads, founded with Malcolm Goldstein and James Tenney, which has cut its way across the decades. Among Corner's most fascinating works are those created between 1962 and 1964, during the period when he was resident composer at the Judson Dance Theatre, one the great occurrences in the emergence of avant-garde dance, movement, Happenings, and performance art. Even today, it stands among the most important examples of collaborate create exchange in the history the American arts. Alga Marghen present a three-CD box, issued in early 2000s by and now out of print, gathering much of the work created during these important years in Corner's career, signed by the composer himself. Alga Marghen's triple box gathers On Tape From the Judson Years, and More from The Judson Years (Early 60s) Instrumental and Vocal Works Volumes 1 and 2, bringing you to heart of Philip Corner's brilliant practice and mind. Across the first disc Corner's tape works -- complex textures and sonority coming to life. The second disc is of an entirely different sort, featuring works created with a great many of Corner's closest collaborators and friends. Recorded at Judson, 1965, the disc features a knock-out cast of Ayo, David Behrman, Philip Corner, Malcolm Goldstein, Dick Higgins, Joe Jones, Alison Knowles, Jackson Mac Low, Charlotte Moorman, Nam June Paik, and Chieko Shiomi, and more. The third disc takes the ear further afield, with "Everything Max Has" (1964), a performance of Max Neuhaus solo recorded at the ONCE Festival (1965), captures the composer and percussionist taking down an overwhelming amount of equipment. It also includes Big Trombone (1963), with Jim Fulkerson improvising over tape collage, "Homage to Revere" (1962) a work for an ensemble of copper-bottom kitchen utensils, and "Punkt" (1961) for an ensemble of staccato sounds, and a number of other astounding works from the era. As a totality, Alga Marghen's three-CD set of Corner's years spent at the Judson Theatre, are a mind-boggling entry into an overwhelmingly exciting moment in time. Edition of 200, signed and numbered.

FAUST & NURSE WITH WOUND Disconnected CD
2022 limited restock. "Faust was among the most adventurous and creative German bands of the '70s, and after disappearing for a decade and a half, they reunited in the '90s and made several startlingly good albums. Today, drummer Werner 'Zappi' Diermaier and bassist Jean-Hervé Peron are the only original members, joined by Amaury Cambuzat from the band Ulan Bator. Nurse With Wound, formed three decades ago, is the brainchild of Steven Stapleton, now augmented with Colin Potter. NWW recordings are notoriously varied, often sprawling, haunting, and strange, with a love of musique concrète and disquieting sounds. Disconnected features four songs, each over ten minutes long. The opener 'Lass Mich' uses an audio collage technique, often employed by both bands, and it's closest in spirit to Faust's first self-titled album and The Faust Tapes, as ideas emerge and fade and sound snippets are juxtaposed with vocal samples. A drum beat starts with a heavy one-note bass line, and the track gradually gets more chaotic with squeaks, a looped drone of strings, and a mysterious voice asking, 'Hallo?' The tracks 'It Will Take Time' and 'Disconnected' are reminiscent of NWW's lengthy Soliloquy For Lilith, which featured modulating tones created by the hum of effects processors in a feedback loop; they're hypnotizing, zone-out songs. 'Tu m'entends?' is also trance inducing, but more elements are present, such as hand drums, faint echoing electronic squeals, and continually ramping tones. Overall, this is one of the least rock-oriented, and most bizarre Faust albums." Regular, non-limited version, with 4 tracks.

PARKER, WILLIAM Mayan Space Station LP
2022 repress; LP version. Includes download code. "Following the release of the Migration of Silence Intoand Out of The Tone World: Volumes 1-10 10CD Box and his first book-length biography, Universal Tonality: The Life and Music of William Parker earlier this year, composer, multi-instrumentalist, poet, griot, improviser and community leader William Parker presents a pair of brand-new studio trio albums which bountifully expound on his vision. One of the most iconic and enduring music leaders to emerge in the world over the last half century, William Parker continues to raise the bar higher. Mayan Space Station is his first electric guitar trio album, and features Ava Mendoza -- electric guitar, William Parker -- bass, and Gerald Cleaver -- drums. Cosmic multi-hued blues, perfect for space and time travel. The unparalleled rhythmic firmament created by Parker & Cleaver is matched by Mendoza in full flight. All of the promise imagined by a trio recording of these musicians with compositions by Parker is delivered to the fullest. William Parker first worked with Ava Mendoza on a project entitled Thunder and Flowers for his July 2019 residency at The Stone in NYC. Her prodigious talents have illuminated many projects and recordings as both leader and collaborator over the past decade. As is abundantly clear here, she is committed to bringing expressivity, energy and a wide sonic range to the music. Gerald Cleaver is an exceptionally gifted poet of drum sound who can play in the deepest of pockets and manifest all manner of sound to perfectly fit contours within the most open of forms. Cleaver & Parker have worked closely on numerous projects, notably within the nonpareil full-improvising trio, Farmers By Nature, together with Craig Taborn. William Parker is in vibrant grandmaster blossom here on double bass -- in both pizzicato & bow-as-prism modes. Regarding the album title, Parker offers: 'Mayan Space Station is a conduit for peace and inspiration. It is an oasis where sound and silence navigators stop for sustenance to replenish their imaginations. It is a reality that important to the myth structure of the Tone World chronicle. In a way, musicians, and definitely these particular musicians, belong to the blood line of sonic travelers who, as Sun Ra described it, 'travel the space ways.' Re-inventing the process, allowing music to flow through their instruments.'"

JENKINS, CASSANDRA (An Overview On) An Overview On Phenomenal Nature LP
"Cassandra Jenkins's An Overview on Phenomenal Nature emerged from the blue earlier this year. With pandemic unknowns and political upheaval leaving most at frayed ends, the New York-born musician's assuring voice and expansive fresh take on songwriting created a much-needed reflective space for listeners worldwide. As 2021 comes to a close, Jenkins revisits those flowing textures and refrains with (An Overview on) An Overview on Phenomenal Nature, a collection of previously unreleased sonic sketches, initial run-throughs, demos, and sound recordings from the cutting room floor that provided the scaffolding for what became one of this year's most critically acclaimed albums. When Jenkins visited Josh Kaufman's studio this summer, they opened up their original sessions to uncover the ideas that were shed in the creative process. This new collection isn't merely a retrospective; it acts as a clear-eyed addendum as well as a compelling origin story, coming to life as a subconscious companion to the original album. (An Overview on) An Overview on Phenomenal Nature bookends Cassandra Jenkins's musical output this year with nuance, coloring in the corners, and giving the listener another window into her ever-expanding world of chance encounters, experiences, and sonic textures. They glimmer like the sun's changing patterns on the wall as a new day gets going."

2022 repress. Originally released in 1999. Double 12" vinyl edition in gatefold sleeve. Includes CD. Some artists such as Daft Punk and Air have already contributed to globally popularize what the English called the "French Touch", a new term that refers to a large musical French movement. 1999, the first album by Cassius, is one of the key pieces of this growing genre, and demonstrates once again the variety of the trend. Indeed, after have cooperated for a long time with MC Solaar, one of France's '90s best rappers, the hip-hop influence of both Cassius members had to have an impact on their personal concept, and it seduced a lot of listeners hungry for new musical flavors: more than 250,000 units sold worldwide and numerous unconditional fans.

SEEDSMEN TO THE WORLD Seedsmen To The World LP
"A collaboration between the cascading soundscapes of Detroit's Infinite River (Joey Mazzola, Gretchen Gonzales, and Warren Defever) and folk troubadour Ethan Daniel Davidson, Seedsmen to the World enter with a slow-burning, hypnotic drone. Davidson's haunting vocals evoke bygone memories; as the songs gradually unfold, each track lingers on the edge of the familiar. Through heavy waves of feedback and fuzz, the album opens to epic expanses of sound that crackle like half-remembered dreams. Seedsmen seamlessly blend the dark currents of drone with the mournful confessionals of American folk for an otherworldly ode to songwriters' past, as intimate as it is remote."

LADDIO BOLOCKO Laddio Bolocko '97 - '99 3LP
"The following story might be bullshit (drug use and memory enhancements): years ago, I was sitting at home staring into the middle distance and the phone on the wall rang (that should denote how long ago this was). On the other end was the booker from The Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco, who had never called me before. She was excited about the show they had that night and was calling people to invite them. Apparently, the night before a band called Laddio Bolocko had played and were so mesmerizing, so strong that they had offered them the next night, which was open. I was intrigued as no band had ever warranted this invite previously to my knowledge. This was new and exciting territory. I had my ass and ears handed to me that evening. Scorching, pummeling, deep waters ran over me as I stood, beer in hand, mouth open. My memory may be embellishing but I remember a sax as big as me, drums that were physically hanging on by a thread, and twin electric strings that reeled sinister sprites over my head in outwardly circular patterns. Aggressive, far-out fractals burned in my brain. I had never seen anything like this band, and never have again. That's why it's so shocking to wait around all these years for someone to pick up the thread and re-release these three perfect recordings on LP for the first time... and still be waiting. So, I'm happy to announce, Castle Face is here with a 3xLP remedy. We've been working with all the original members of Laddio Bolocko and sifting through to put together this concise LP box set of what is arguably their strongest home studio recorded material. Included here (for the first time on wax) are 'Strange Warmings Of Laddio Bolocko', 'In Real Time' and 'As If By Remote'. Includes former members of Dazzling Killmen, Panicsville, the Psychic Paramount, and Mars Volta. For fans of Can, This Heat, The Residents, improvisation (really, they are hard to compare, they are so singular in sound)." --John Dwyer

GRAVES, MILFORD Babi 2CD
2022 repress. R.I.P. Milford Graves, 1941-2021. Please watch the amazing Jake Meginsky documentary film "Milford Graves Full Mantis" if you haven't had the chance (streaming freely in the world). Corbett Vs. Dempsey presents a reissue of Milford Graves's Bäbi, originally issued in 1977 on Graves's own IPS label. This is the first reissue of one of the most legendary albums in the history of free music. Recorded live in concert in 1976, when Graves' trio with saxophonists Arthur Doyle and Hugh Glover was at the height of its powers, Bäbi is a testament to the absolutely unique approach the drummer had established for himself. He had reconfigured the drum kit, removing the second heads on all the drums and replacing the snare with two toms, which allowed him a much more nuanced sense of indirectness in his multi-directional adventures in time. The track "Ba" remains one of the most astonishing feats of percussion alchemy ever waxed, as funky as ten slap bassists and as free as an exploding grenade. Doyle and Glover are incendiary, too, inspired by Graves to new and shocking heights of achievement, their hoarse cries and whistling split-tones carried to thrilling plateaus on the energy of Graves' hands and feet. The original tapes for the session have been lost, so the reissue was lovingly remastered from virgin vinyl, itself now worth a mint. In 2017, Graves discovered a previously unknown tape in his archives featuring the same trio at its inception, in home recordings made seven years earlier, in 1969. Graves pummels a huge gong while Glover plays an instrument that, after sounding like none ever known, turns out to be bass clarinet. Extreme music recorded up close and very hot, it is among the most searing sessions never heard, until now. Rounding out the two-CD package are three previously unpublished photos by Gérard Rouy, and the original LP cover design by Graves himself.

GRAVES & DON PULLEN, MILFORD The Complete Yale Concert, 1966 CD
2022 repress. For a performance at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, in spring of 1966, percussionist Milford Graves invited pianist Don Pullen to play duets. The two musicians had worked together in a band fronted by saxophonist and clarinetist Giusseppi Logan, with whom they had recorded two LPs in 1965 for ESP-Disk'. Graves was already a daunting presence in free music. One step at a time, he was busy transforming the role of drumming in jazz, introducing a new way of dealing with unmetered time and accomplishing this task with technique that was almost inconceivable. His experience playing timbales in Latin bands had been formative, suggesting that the snare could be used as accent rather than beat-keeper, but by the mid '60s he'd worked up a holistic approach to sound and energy that was the most radical of his improvising percussion contemporaries. And with a simpatico accomplice like Pullen, who would go on to have an illustrious career with Charles Mingus, co-fronting a band with George Adams, and as a soloist and bandleader. This early setting finds Pullen is at his most hard-hitting, and his piano concept as heard here lays to rest dubious claims of Cecil Taylorism. Inspired by their performance, Graves and Pullen issued an LP, In Concert at Yale University, Vol. 1 on their own Self-Reliance Program imprint (1966). The vinyl is impossibly rare, especially its first copies, which sported hand-painted covers by the musicians. A second volume titled Nommo (1967) was subsequently issued, and it too is a highly prized platter. None of this music has ever been available digitally. The tapes were lost, so in putting this production together -- in the works for ten years -- virgin copies of the LPs were used. One CD includes the two complete LPs together with original cover designs, a gallery of hand-painted LPs, and a photo of Graves and Pullen selling them at a Nation of Islam convention. An insert modeled after the original one presents an interview with Graves about the production of the records. This is beyond the holy grail of free music. It is as vital and challenging today as it was more than five decades ago. Corbett Vs. Dempsey is honored to have collaborated with Milford Graves on this historic reissue. Personnel: Milford Graves - drums and percussion; Don Pullen - piano.

OASIS Oasis LP
Reissue, originally released in 1973. Another psych holy grail, finally seeing the light of day. Oasis was an American rock band from Marin County, California active in the 1970s. They eventually morphed from the prog-folk ensemble R J Fox. Their self-titled debut album was released as a private press in 1973 by the Cranbus label in a small run of 150 copies, imagine that -- the record was in fact never released in the States but only in Canada, such a mystery today. Coming from the west coast the band -- led by female vocalist and eclectic piano player, Sherry Fox -- was certainly informed by local stalwarts (Ultimate Spinach and Jefferson Airplane may come to mind) but had certain similarities with the Allman Brothers country rock guitars and David Crosby vocal harmonies circa If I Could Only Remember My Name (1971). Not to mention the key jazz folk albums of Joni Mitchell. Here's a superb psychedelic folk rock manifesto, still fascinating and over the top, in the name of universal love.

PYJAEN Feast LP
PYJÆN release their second album Feast on DeepMatter. The five-piece outfit reaches inside the deep, multi-dimensional well of what is broadly called jazz, bringing together all its diverse components in a singular, emotional sound. After setting a blueprint for their multifaceted artistry, combining cross-genre sensibilities with ferocious talent on their first two releases, PYJÆN have been busy writing and recording music for their second album, their most accomplished offering yet. Feast was recorded at Peter Gabriel's legendary Real World Studios in Bath over a full week in November 2020. This proved to be an unforgettable experience, which elevated the music and created an unrivalled connection between the five band members and the albums featured artists Nix Northwest, Elisa Imperilee, Hilts, and Corto Alto. With the recording of this new record, each member of the group brought their own specific flavour to the table. They explain: "We want the album to showcase our growing abilities and confidence as a group of five individuals, each with strong personalities and varied sets of influences, while still leaving room for featured artists..." Their new album fearlessly navigates the world of funk, jazz, hip-hop, and punk. With their trademark raw energy, their objective is to bring people together in their love for music. Adventurous songwriting, meticulous timing, incredibly tight horn arrangements, and an obvious joy to play together are the PYJÆN trademarks. These are brought to the table in Feast through vibrant melodies and rich cadences. The band presents a full course musical experience with four singles: in "Beetle Juice" the band joins forces with rapper Nix Northwest to offer a delicious tune characterized by an easy-going yet alluring atmosphere. "The Nightbus" sees a vivacious journey narrated by enticing piano, guitar and trumpet motifs. "Moonlight" sets a sultry tone with Elisa Imperilee's ethereal vocals accompanied by delightful and intricate beat sequences. "By Your Side" is the final instalment before the great "Feast" showcasing an enchanting vocal exchange between Byulah and Renato Paris. With its mouth-watering combinations of jazz, Feast is a witness to the band's exponential growth, taking listeners on a vivid sensory experience. 180 gram vinyl.

REE-VO Spacebox 7"
Ree-Vo release their Spacebox single on 7" with remixes by NØISE and Batbirds and stunning original artwork by Shepard Fairey. In 2021, Bristol hip-hop duo Ree-Vo released two singles from their forthcoming album All Welcome On Planet Ree-Vo. The first was the electro-hop, LFO-surfing "Combat" with a remix by Surgeon. The second -- dropped as a digital double A-side -- was the dark, submersive "Groove With It" remixed by New Jersey's legendary Dälek and "Protein" remixed by The Bug. Ree-Vo begin 2022 in contrast with this their hookiest track on their album, a party throwing chorus spinning tipsy visitors around the intergalactic control booth of mission control. "Lift off, blast off, shirt off, pants off, bra off, Dance off! Naked in the dance hall space box!" is the beamed mantra, rapper Relly transmitting to all occupants of the galaxy. "We wanted to make a hedonistic and colorful dancehall track, a bold response to the suppressive circumstances of the last two years." Helping them on this seven's mission are two remixes, one by NØISE (the musical collective of Joe Cassidy, Shepard Fairey, Merritt Lear, and John Goff) and Batbirds (the duo of Joe Cassidy and Aaron Miller). Common to both of course is Joe Cassidy who recorded for Dell'Orso as Butterfly Child. These mixes were made at the end of 2020, the record sent off to print in February 2021, five months before Joe's incredibly sad departure from this planet, at least physically. Red vinyl.

BUNYAN, VASHTI Heartleap LP
2022 repress. Originally released in 2014. Received a 7.8 rating from Pitchfork. "Nine years after Lookaftering, her last album of new material, legendary British singer-songwriter Vashti Bunyan returns with a breathtaking new LP. Recorded largely in her home studio, Heartleap is a unique and entrancing collection of ten songs comprising what Vashti is adamant will be her final album. Vashti's third album follows her rediscovery after thirty years in the wilderness, with the 2000 re-release of Just Another Diamond Day and the critical success of 2005's Lookaftering. Heartleap has a classic sound and is the first album where she herself has been in control of the whole process, from writing and arranging to playing and recording. Crafted predominantly from a studio setup in her Edinburgh home, the record was slowly pieced together, and reveals an artist at her peak, capturing her songs within fluid settings that masterfully marry content and form. Both Just Another Diamond Day and Lookaftering saw Vashti's songs arranged and framed by others. Joe Boyd's production and Robert Kirby's arranging of the former remain timelessly classy, while Max Richter's bold production of the latter was enhanced by contributions from a raft of supporting artists (including Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Vetiver and Adem), all eagerly adding their colors. Vashti is justly proud of Lookaftering, but Heartleap is an equally strong and even more personal record, standing solely on the merits and patient endeavor of its author rather than being buoyed by and filtered through the cachet and collaborative creativity of a powerful supporting cast. Recording her vocals when no one else was around to overhear freed Vashti up to deliver more confident performances. At the same time, the absence of studio deadlines enabled her to work slowly and lovingly in her own time, weaving together tracks out of numerous takes. Predominantly guitar- or piano-led, with additional instrumentation building throughout, the songs have no underpinning bassline or percussion, giving each instrument and voice the chance to pace itself. It took in total seven years to put together these ten songs. The first was written in 2007, the last just two months before mastering. A hiatus in recording came with the untimely passing of Robert Kirby in 2009. Robert had arranged three songs on Just Another Diamond Day and the pair had just reconnected and planned to work on new arrangements together -- just weeks before he died. It would be another two years before Vashti took the decision that she must arrange the music herself, with Robert always in mind. The subsequent three years saw her gradually picking the thread back up and working with renewed purpose. Slowly more songs found their way out of her. Seven became ten. The right final mix frustratingly eluded her until the album magically came together in a week in May 2014 -- when it was balanced and mastered beautifully. Like the deer on the cover painting, Heartleap moves gracefully, enchantingly. Overcoming adversity through sheer willpower, its very existence is a dazzling triumph."

DJ SNIFF Parallel Traces Of The Jewel Voice LP
Multi-groove single-sided LP. Parallel Traces Of The Jewel Voice by dj sniff is a project that takes inspiration from historical narratives and personal memories constructed around The Jewel Voice Broadcast (Gyokuon Hoso) that took place on August 15th, 1945. Contrary to common belief, Emperor Hirohito did not speak live on air to announce the surrender of Japan on this day. Instead, two lathe-cut discs with his recorded voice were skillfully mixed and played by NHK engineer Shizuto Haruna. Haruna's proto-DJ/turntablist performance was heard not only in Japan but also throughout the colonized territories in Asia, marking the end of World War II and Japanese rule. Interested in these aspects which often have been overlooked within the Japanese narratives of this historical event, dj sniff conducted research in both Taiwan and Japan. Over the course of three years, he collected various materials that include; interviews and field recordings, audio samples extracted from phonograph discs and recordings sessions with improvising musicians, and a re-reading of the Imperial Rescript on Surrender in Chinese. These were used to compose two compositions that are paired differently depending on their distribution format. The vinyl release is a multi-sided disc with two parallel grooves cut on one side, which in effect plays a different composition depending on where the stylus is cued. The other side has no audio but features two silkscreened lines that refer to how Haruna played the original lathe-cut discs. Additionally, an extensive text written by dj sniff accompanies this release. Sniff uncovers technical details of the recording and broadcasting of the emperor's voice that took place over 75 years ago. He also reflects on his encounters with the elderly community in Taiwan who spoke fluent Japanese and shared their personal stories after listening together to records from their childhood.

Accidents that pass the test of time, passions for beauty that mystifies. Imprints to emulate. This album's of the night, but we didn't say it, some things just rise from where they're created. And then last we checked, morning had broken. With light. And awe. And grace. So here's my humble homely. The happiness of others is best when we believe. We Us is a homage. ELECTRIBE 101 Electribal Soul CD
Electribal Soul is the fabled, previously unreleased second album from UK electronic pioneers Electribe 101. Recorded in 1991 by the quintet of vocalist Billie Ray Martin and Birmingham-based electronic musicians Brian Nordhoff, Joe Stevens, Les Fleming and Roberto Cimarosti, Electribal Soul was conceived as the sequel to the band's 1990 debut album, Electribal Memories. Electribal Memories had yielded the hits "Talking With Myself" and "Tell Me When The Fever Ended" and pushed Electribe 101 to the forefront of a crossover electronic scene that fused dance music with pop savvy. More immediately lush and warm than the dancefloor-friendly structures of Electribal Memories, the clue to the sound of Electribal Soul lies in the second word in its title: soul. Songs like the aching sensuality of opening track "Insatiable Love" or the emboldened defiance of "Moving Downtown" showcase Billie Ray Martin's distinctive vocal range as it moves from haunting quiet to dramatic, euphoric rapture "Deadline For My Memories", the song that provided the title for Martin's first solo album, was originally intended for the second Electribe 101 album. "A Sigh Won't Do" finds Martin in soothing vocal mode, her lyrics framed by restrained and subtle beats and sounds. Electribal Soul heads into darker territory with "Hands Up And Amen which savagely documents the mugging of a woman in Queens, NY at gunpoint. Acover of Throbbing Gristle's "Persuasion" takes you into a seedy world of sexual coercion and creepy infatuation. Pop house banger "Space Oasis" was written by Billie Ray Martin with Martin King before Electribe 101 was formed. Electribal Soul places Martin at the captivating center, surrounding her voice with everything from dubby rhythms to chunky R&B beats to nascent trip hop breaks; wiry, acid-hued synths uncoil gently without ever dominating, while horn samples and lush, disco-inflected strings provide a rich, naturalistic accompaniment for Martin's emotional outpourings. The band finished mixing the album at London's Olympic Studios in 1991, assisted by Apollo 440's Howard Gray on production duties for "Deadline For My Memories", "Insatiable Love" and "Space Oasis", with Gray supported by talented engineer Al Stone. Against a backdrop of a worsening relationship with Tom Watkins, and a disinterested Phonogram, Electribe 101 were swiftly dropped by their label. Thirty years after the songs were recorded, the second and final chapter of Electribe 101's story is here. Includes extensive liner notes from Billie Ray Martin, and the album sleeve features unseen archive photographs by Lewis Mulatero from the original 1990 sessions.

MOLA Schnee Im Sommer LP
Whether crypto-man or crypto-substance, it will be a disastrous affair in any case. Mola's music is the unadorned antithesis to a rosy world. She celebrates herself to death, pulls you into her inner chaos and does without the usual romanticizing transfiguration of the merciless disorientation that catches up with you on the way home after the last cigarette. The album tells a dark yet fragile story of uncompromising autopilot nights that unite and divide us. Temporarily reduced to intimacy, then escalating into iconic '80s Purple Rain pathos, Mola illustrates the emotional chaos that the inner dialogue of left and right brain triggers in her. With Mola, all experiences are suspiciously turned inside out to see what is hidden behind the everyday facade. She turns her inner self inside out and addresses what hurts her -- undistorted, not exaggerated, approachable. Mola describes her own low blows with defiant self-confidence, without a sentimental glaze. Scheee Im Sommer (Snow in Summer) could be an album by an '80s punk rock band with heartbreak, but also by an alternative band from the '90s shortly before their holiday in a Betty Ford clinic. Features Haiyti, Fatoni, and Roy Bianco & die Abbrunzati Boys.

RESENDE & INDEX, MARCOS Marcos Resende & Index LP
Limited restock; LP version. Beyond their highly sought-after 1978 album Festa Para Um Novo Rei -- home to the mystical jazz-funk classic "Vidigal" and released on Philips' iconic Musica Popular Brasileira Contemporanea series (MPBC) -- little is known about Marcos Resende & Index, even to aficionados of obscure Brazilian music. Far Out Recordings present their previously unreleased self-titled debut album from 1976, contributing a crucial missing work from the glory days of progressive Brazilian instrumental music. Born in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Brazil in 1947, Marcos Resende was a prodigious musical child. In spite of his immense musical potential, he travelled to Lisbon in the '60s to study medicine. Yet continuing to explore his musical passion on the side, he formed a trio which went on to open for Dexter Gordon at the Cascais Jazz Festival in 1971. From here he formed the electronic oriented prog-jazz group Status, who opened shows for the likes of Elton John, Phil Woods, Stan Getz, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, but in spite of their relative live success they have no known recordings. Now established as a highly regarded keyboardist, composer, and innovative electronic musician, Resende returned home to Brazil following Portugal's Revolução dos Cravos in 1974. Inspired by US jazz and British progressive rock he'd experienced while residing in Europe, Resende went all out acquiring a keyboard arsenal to be reckoned with, which included the Prophet 5, Yamaha CP-708, and Mini Moog. Determined to integrate his newfound inspirations with Brazilian rhythms and jazz traditions, he formed a new quartet with Rubão Sabino (bass), Claudio Caribé (drums) and the late great Oberdan Magalhães, of Banda Black Rio and Cry Babies fame. Marcos Resende & Index recorded their self-titled debut at Sonoviso Studios with the legendary sound engineer Toninho Barbosa, known as the "Brazilian Rudy Van Gelder". Marcos Resende & Index has both the timeless ethereal qualities as well as the progressive and futuristic ideals of Light As A Feather. Marcos kept the tapes from the Sonoviso sessions safe and presented them to Far Out's Joe Davis at his home in Lisbon in 2018, but only after 25 years of Joe pleading to hear them. Marcos has worked closely with Far Out towards restoring these recordings over the last two years, but tragically passed away after a battle with stomach cancer on November 12th, 2020 at the age of 73.

ABRONIA Map of Dawn LP
"For their great third LP, this Portland, OR sextet heads deep into the scalding sun of what feels like the Sonoran Desert. There is an edge to the fried guitar and the ever more massive drumming that evokes a parched ritual of psychedelic worship. Perhaps this has something to do with the fact initial rehearsals took place outdoors, during which time the Pacific Northwest was on fire (both in the forests and on the streets). When you know this fact, you can begin to appreciate the smoke as a compositional component. Abronia's line-up has not changed since 2019's The Whole of Each Eye (FTR 498LP, 2019), but their sound keeps evolving in terms of both depth and connection. The percussion achieves a true otherness here. Both Shaver's Big Drum, and the additions of pedal steel player Rick Pedrosa, create a central pulse that's impossible to resist. The bass and guitars, slither through the haze, raising up for massive strikes at times, just laying back and waiting at others. Different instrumental slices of this album might remind you of anyone from the Gun Club to Savage Republic to Amon Düül II. But Keelin Mayer's vocals are more of a presence this time as well. Occasionally, there's a way her voice combines with the coiling Eastern-tinged string parts and lazy propulsion that reminds of Grace Slick's pre-Airplaneband, the Great Society. But she is just as likely to conjure up visions of Scream-era Siouxsee, surrounded by gauzy clouds of guitar. Still, the collective brunt of Map of Dawn is bracingly original. It doesn't really sound like anyone else. Abronia have developed a nuanced and totally addictive approach to creating song forms. I'm just hoping I'll get a chance to see them live sometime soon. Music this good should be a fully immersive experience." --Byron Coley, 2022

CASSELS A Gut Feeling CD
Tripe. It's what graces the cover of Cassels' third album, A Gut Feeling. It looks gross. And Cassels are a rock band who've often sounded gross. You know the adjectives. "Discordant". "Angular". "Cynical". Shellac quickly mentioned. Listening to A Gut Feeling, though, Cassels sound different. Not too different -- the molten riff of advance single "Mr Henderson Coughs" puts paid to the idea that the London-based duo have taken a hard 180. But instead of writing as quickly as possible, the Covid-19 pandemic gave the brothers Beck (Jim, guitar/vocals, and Loz, drums/BVs) some time to mull things over. Instead of sticking with the stripped-back recording approach of previous LPs, Jim and Loz spent time at Tom Hill's Bookhouse Studios in South London, considering tone, layering tracks, and bringing new instruments into the fold. Lyrically, the approach has changed too. Rather than presented as personal experience, Jim notes that his words this time around "are an intentionally muddy mix of experience, opinion, red herrings and fiction." The result is the most satisfying and unexpected collection of songs in the Cassels catalog. Instruments at turns razor-sharp and bludgeon-blunt provide the backing track to a savage, hilarious, and tender collection of short stories. Jim notes that "writing can be a great way of unearthing hang-ups and becoming acquainted with your own anxieties." Hardly new ground for a rock band, but presented in this third person format -- unbiased and filled to the brim with human warmth -- these songs are more empathetic than anything the band have written before. It's clear that the band still aren't afraid to tackle weighty subjects too, with A Gut Feeling picking up where their previous album, The Perfect Ending (2019), left off. "Charlie Goes Skiing" pulls a similar trick to Future of the Left's "Goals in Slow Motion" -- setting a screed against consumerism to one of the most propulsive, catchy tracks on the record. It's followed by "Dog Drops Bone", a rustling loop overlaid with sad, simple chords reminiscent of a Sparklehorse tune, which uses the internal monologue of a beloved canine companion to question the true depth and sincerity of human relationships. This kicks into the breakneck "Beth's Recurring Dream" -- a track exploring a sexual identity crisis which owes as much to early Los Campesinos! as it does Steve Albini. Of "Your Humble Narrator", the album's punishing, pulsing opener and A Gut Feeling's thematic frame.

VA Milagros del Ritmo: Obscure and Rhythmic Tunes From 1988-1991 Selected by Jose Manuel 2x12"
Milagros del Ritmo is the third release of Harmonie Exotic, a label focused on reissues and compilations of obscure tracks. The producer Jose Manuel, already known for his releases on Optimo Records, Music for Dreams, and other labels, has selected ten rare tracks from 1988 to 1991. Starting as a DJ, Jose Manuel has developed over the years a passion for vinyl collection. This passion has also turned into work by creating the above-mentioned label with the aim of bringing back the art of the past. Milagros del Ritmo starts with the sexy voice of Debbie McKayle in "Necesito tu Amor". Her vocal mood is reminiscent of "Sueño Latino". The compilation continues with "Abadan" by Mondo Bagdad, who combined Arabic sounds with new beat. Also, in "Zena (Dub)" there are influences from the Middle East and the first Chicago house. The next track, "Mescla Del House", released in very late '80s, sees Spanish vocals with the drum Roland TR-808. Then the compilation moves from synth-pop with "Radio Arabesque" to the Balearic downtempo of "Waves" by Ambionix to EBM sounds with "Yoshua" by Danton's Voice. A brilliant selection of ten obscure, but at the same time floor killer tracks. Also features Badou, Cettle Crew & Bimbo, Ethno League, Trio Balkana, Bandana, More For, and Robin Hilbig.

WILD TERRIER ORCHESTRA Even The Chimera LP
Even The Chimera is the debut album by Wild Terrier Orchestra, a new project by Dimitris Papadatos, aka Jay Glass Dubs, based on interchangeability and open improvisation. A newer, freer incarnation of Papadatos's creative intent, the project acts more like an open container of disparate and idiosyncratic contributions from a mutable cast of musicians and artists. Often times not provided according to a pre-planned structure, these contributions are actually more likely to arrive in the form of free improvisations, unconnected musical segments and fragmented splinters of sound. This allows Papadatos to aggregate all the constituent parts according to an intuitive process that bridges between the detailed craft of electronic music production and surrealist techniques such as the cadavre exquis (exquisite corpse) and the cut-up. It's both a harmonization of contrasting tones and a research for commonality within difference, although none of the wild terriers are ever nearly tamed. Unsurprisingly, the main inspiration for this new chapter came from a pinnacle of avantgarde literature: poet Andreas Embirikos's, considered Greece's first surrealist and all-out paradoxical figure. Specifically, this release is guided and instigated by his poem "OKTANA", in which Embirikos inscribes a manifesto for a hedonistic utopia years ahead of any accelerationist theories, bursting with contradicting presences and mutating identities. Written in the aftermath of the Greek civil war, the poem calls for a time of eternal poetry and spiritual intoxication that can only be reached through a painful process of violent deconstruction. Thus, Even The Chimera was born: a culmination of Papadatos's decades long research on traditional Greek and Byzantine music, free jazz and free improvisation. Firmly spread between two side-long tracks, the contributions of American singer and musician Cruel Diagonals on vocal duties as well as Greek artist and musician Fotini Korre on ney suggest the existence of a filament that connects the west and the east through the creation of "possible musics". This happens in accordance to Papadatos's practice of a counterfactual approach to the process of what music history dictates. It is also directly shaped by the musician's frequent dwellings in the isle of Cyprus, a land in which the clash of worlds and culture has often taken both violent and beautiful shapes. The long drones, acoustic ghosts, and unbalanced choirs that form the album seem to call from the Mediterranean itself, not only from its history but also from its possible futures and unreal narrations, invoking it as a nexus of diversity and possibility.

STONER Totally... CD
Half of the original members of Kyuss: the lord of coolness Brant Bjork himself, and Rex Everything AKA Nick Oliveri former of Queens of The Stone Age. The dukes of the desert are back with an incredible sophomore album: Stöner -- Totally... is the perfect mix of desert swing, stoner rock, desert rock, and low punk all at once. Eight brand new tracks which will blow your mind, recorded by Yosef Sunborn who followed Brant in the last decade for his solo recordings. Mellow guitars, funky stoner rhythms, bluesy atmospheres, typical Nick's punky sounds. The album flies away in one single listen and makes you want to play it again immediately. Brant Bjork and Nick Oliveri, founding members of the stoner rock legend Kyuss, are joined again by drummer Ryan Güt (of Björk's solo band) and they've got dibs on the thick and dusty swinging grooves, returning as Stöner with their sophomore release Totally... Stöner's love for their early inspirations (bands like Blue Öyster Cult, Kiss, Ramones, Blue Cheer, Misfits, Black Flag, The Stooges, MC5) result in big, groovy, sunbaked riffs that can cruise low and slow but then floor it and run all the red lights. Live, this is a band about the magnetism between the players, the groove, the loose vibe and straight up badass rock n' roll... Stöner are masters of their trade. With Totally... Stöner is in its true form, getting together and having fun. Stöner's world is a colorful joyride, heavy of rock but not of head. The record cranks with vibes of classic hard rock, heavy blues, desert rock and psych rock jams -- things that come organically to this trio. Stöner can't help but express an abundance of punk rock rawness and passion for real rock and roll swagger. With two records, Live at Mojave and Stoners Rule (HPS 176CD/LP/LTD-LP/S-LP/SPLAT-LP/TRAN-LP), the latest release Totally... sees the band realizing the chemistry of these old friends developing a statement of pure rock n' roll fun. Produced, recorded and mixed by Yoseph Sanborn and Stöner. Guest appearances on guitar by Greg Hetson (Circle Jerks) and Mario Lalli (Yawning Man). Grab a slice and crank it.

Honey Pie Records present a reissue of Elza Soares's Se Acaso Você Chegasse, originally released in 1960. A highly distinctive personality! A dark, dense, raspy voice as a strong and deliberated expression of her poor social origins. For all her entire life singer Elza Soares was one of the strongest and most respected Brazilian performers across genres. Originally released in 1960, Se Acaso Você Chegasse was her second album. A superb and tuff statement on the black side of samba and bossa styles. A lively, colorful, energetic collection of songs based on a stream of big-band arrangements by the great Oswaldo Borba (E Sua Orquestra). A treasure in the whole history of Brazilian music.

MAURSETH, BENEDICTE Harr LP
LP version. An homage to the wildlife and mountain people of Benedicte Maurseth's home area in Hardanger. The acclaimed and innovative visionary musician Benedicte Maurseth is coming forth with the wonderful all-consuming album Hárr. The sound of her magic Hardanger fiddle is woven seamlessly together with that of birds and the other musicians' musical impressions. Always moving forward with a steely calm disposition, the record draws you into a world where one feels to be one with nature, wandering over a mountain plateau. Benedicte was raised in Maurset in Eidfjord and has hiked through the mountains her whole life, clearly laying the foundation for this musical expedition. As traditional folk musicians have always been, Maurseth is open to contemporary influences from interactive art and music styles. The work Hárr oscillates between Norwegian folk tunes, free improvised music, American minimalism, and extensive use of musique concrète. In the tracks you will also hear natural soundscapes via the shufflings of reindeer, reindeer herders, birds, and insects all recorded in Hardangervidda.

VA The Harmonic Series Volume 2 3LP
2022 restock. A collection of long-form works in just intonation by Kali Malone, Duane Pitre, Catherine Lamb, Tashi Wada, Byron Westbrook, and Caterina Barbieri. Each artist occupies an entire side of the collection's three LPs. Curated by Duane Pitre, Important Records returns with its second volume of compiled works in just intonation. The Harmonic Series Volume 2, issued as a triple-LP collection, features a series of long-form compositions by six of the most important emerging voices of contemporary experimental music. Unlike equal temperament, which equally divides an octave into 12 fixed notes, just intonation utilizes intervals of whole number ratios to determine tonal positions. It results in a highly individualized tonal language and holds the potential for more nuanced relationships and striking, sympathetic resonances. Rooted in ideas that trace their way across the last 2500 years, just intonation lays at the foundation for numerous Indian, Persian, and East Asian musical traditions. It was reintroduced into western music during the 20th century by composers like Harry Partch, Ben Johnston, Lou Harrison, James Tenney, Terry Riley, and La Monte Young. An interest in just intonation has continued to swell following the appearance of The Harmonic Series in 2009 inspiring Pitre to curate a second compilation. Kali Malone's "Pipe Inversions" -- played by Malone on a small pipe organ, joined by Isak Hedtjärn on bass clarinet -- belongs to a larger body of microtonal organ works that have increasingly placed the composer at the forefront of contemporary minimalism and drone music. Across the length of Duane Pitre's "Three for Rhodes" -- a chamber piece for "unknown instrumentation" - deconstructed rhythms and melodic fragments swell in a dance of harmonic interplay, rising and falling within the work's engrossing architectural complexity. Catherine Lamb's "inter sum" -- one of a tiny number of available works to encounter the composer and renowned violist working on synthesizer -- endeavors to break the visualization of harmony as a vertical reality, rendering it multidimensionally in space. A canon for eight-violins played by Marc Sabat, Tashi Wada's "Midheaven (Alignment Mix)" -- guided by the internal logic of its tuning system -- shape-shifts into an elegantly poetic form of musical conceptualism. Byron Westbrook's "Memory Phasings" -- composed and recorded on a combination of computer controlled modular synthesizers and a Yamaha TX802 -- employs the ratios of just intonation as harmonic building blocks for texture. Deploying just intonation as a means for psycho-physiological exploration, Caterina Barbieri's "Firmamento" -- composed for synthesizer -- deftly intervenes with the expectations of minimalism, durational music, and drone. Cut at Golden and pressed at RTI for maximum fidelity.

SPENCER & THE HITMAKERS, JON Spencer Gets It Lit CD
"The incredible, indelible Jon Spencer (Blues Explosion, Boss Hog, Pussy Galore, Heavy Trash, etc) is back with the incendiary HITmakers -- and with his hottest record yet! Spencer Gets It Lit is classic Jon Spencer taken to the extreme -- electro-boogie, constructivist art pop, and a psychedelic swamp of industrial sleaze and futurist elegance. It is an epic master work of freak beat from the world's weirdest garage. Across brain-boggling layers of fury, fuzz guitar, and a crash-bang battery of phaser blasts, photon torpedoes, and otherworldly zounds, he frantically spits, croons, rhapsodizes, and seduces. Spencer Gets It Lit is his most complex and groovy record in years, a dark, danceable odyssey -- both a studied take-down of the early 21st century, and a celebration of the place where electricity meets the mind. Thirteen wicked hot songs of love, loss, lust, life -- from the Farfisa-fueled, warped psycho-punk rave-up of 'Junk Man,' to the intimate lover's plea of 'My Hit Parade,' to the outer-space, end-of-days country funk of 'Worm Town,' Spencer Gets It Lit delivers all of the friction, excitement, and post-modern depravity one could ever ask for! Says Spencer, 'Send out the Hit Signal! This is the most uncompromising album I've ever made!'"

BOTTLER Journey Work LP
LP version. New York-based duo Bottler, Pat Butler and Phil Shore, are the vanguard of their own distinctly eclectic sound. Raw, emotive, bold, and highly creative, the duo has successfully carved out their own path with a series of EPs that represent the broad scope of their production prowess. Over the last five years Bottler have been working on their debut album, Journey Work, a milestone achievement that marks a pivotal moment in their music career. The album is a distillation of the duo's multifaceted upbringing, blending a variety of styles together bound together by an overarching attitude and approach that embraces creative freedom and self-acceptance. The duo blends a myriad of styles to create songs that emanate warmth, joy, sorrow, pain, and the full spectrum of human emotion. Across 11 cuts Bottler illustrate their distinct take on electronic music, weaving in elements of indie, pop, rock, house, and techno with confidence and panache. Journey Work starts at "Home", a song that is fizzing with positive energy, Pat's vocals welcoming the listener to the start of this meandering audio adventure. "Chrysalis" opens with delicate piano keys that guide us into a bombastic bassline and energizing drum beats. As it progresses, scintillating layers of synth and strings are added, creating a highly affecting, uplifting atmosphere. "Melatonin" follows up next, merging heartfelt vocal delivery with a somber instrumental, and a stirring guitar riff. A glorious demonstration of Bottler's songwriting capabilities, which are also evident on "Vinyl", an up-tempo dance number with an unbelievably catchy chorus. On "Tacoma", Pat and Phil channel their appreciation of house and techno into a haunting cut that utilizes reverse strings and extended vocal refrains to chilling effect. "Meds" incorporates muted singing, mystical pad work and a mesmerizing riff to produce a captivating slice of uncomplicated dance music. This is followed by "Hot Water", which feels like a trip to a Californian beach, circa 1965. "Mako" features Samurai Velvet singing about fireflies and afterlife in a wonderfully heartrending manner, Bottler's instrumental keeping things simple, yet highly effective. "Weed" is a dense, gloomy cut with inspired use of chopped up vocal clips, stuttered throughout, alongside a mean bassline. "You're Old" is an anthemic song that transposes Bottler's idiosyncratic style onto the pop blueprint. Finally, "Cicada Rhythm" closes the album with a pensive, yet joyful feeling. A chunky bassline is juxtaposed with Pat's angelic vocals cascading over the top.

LEE & THE AGGROVATORS, BUNNY Run Sound Boy Run CD
To celebrate the 20-year anniversary of our label Jamaican Recordings and to mark the sad one year passing of the musical maestro reggae producer Bunny "Striker" Lee, the label has pulled together a brand new collection of some great Bunny Lee rhythms. The label started way back with initial meetings with Bunny Lee and a promise to keep his music available, out on the streets. He will be sorely missed but will live on through his extraordinary musical legacy and we hope to add to this by including this release to the stable of an unbeatable catalog.Legendary record producer Bunny "Striker" Lee's vast selection of rhythms were ever present at any sound clash or dance worth talking about in the early to mid-1970s. Where the version found on the B-side of a single or special dub cut on acetates, would be played to win over the people and conquer the dance. Bunny Lee was the undisputed rhythm master and on this special release he is also the MC telling the crowd how it is and that any rival sound system should watch out as he has the rhythms that can reign supreme. The band cutting these timeless rhythms was a group of top Jamaican musicians Bunny had put together called The Aggrovators. The Aggrovators were a group of reggae musicians that usually featured Carlton "Santa" Davis on drums playing alongside Robbie Shakespeare on bass, with other musicians added like Earl "Chinna" Smith on guitar and Tommy McCook, Vin Gordon, and Lennox Brown added for horn arrangements. Keyboards and organ duties normally fell to musicians Ansel Collins and Bernard "Touter" Harvey. The band was named after singer Eddie Grant had repeated the phrase to Bunny Lee on one of his many trips to England, that such and such artist was giving him "Aggro". This was a term used in England in the 1970s by the Skinhead followers of reggae music. A term shortened from the word "Aggrovation", meaning trouble, fighting or making the situation worse. Bunny Lee was so taken with this term that on returning to Jamaica, not only did he name his group of musicians the "Aggrovators" but he also named his record shop situated at 101 Orange Street "Agro Records". Jamaican Records have compiled some great tracks recorded by this fantastic group of musicians. With the added extra magic of Mr Bunny Lee calling it out as only he can on the microphone. CD version includes three bonus tracks.

TUPPERWEAR Mokele Mbembe LP
2021 repress of Tupperwear's 2017's sophomore album, Mokele Mbembe. Rising from the ashes of legendary underground Tenerife outfit Colectivo Drone are Tupperwear -- an organic electronic duo formed by Daniel García (Salétile) and Mladen Kurajica (Gaf) in 1999. Since then, and for the most of 20+ years they have been unleashing electronic waves of sound from the Atlantic Island by way of intense live and a series of uncompromising and unclassifiable albums and EPs. Taking cues from a wide spectrum of electronic music classics, mostly the more pastoral and frantic electronica of Aphex Twin et all circa the late '90s, whilst at the same time adding their own mischievous and tongue in cheek approach to composition and performance, Tupperwear have for the last 20 years been responsible for some of the most intense live performances the island has seen whilst also taking their anything goes, improvisation first approach all over the world, this includes virtually all of Europe (east or west), Japan, China, Peru, Colombia, Equador, or Mexico, you name it! In 2017 the local festival and label Keroxen published Mokele Mbembe, their second LP of twisted electronica which is here repressed to a wider public after the success of their collaboration with São Paulo Underground and Chicago legend Rob Mazurek.

VA Radar 2 LP
Yearly compilation album Radar by Keroxen, introducing the second volume in the series of themed based albums showcasing the talents and misfortunes of carefully selected musicians/bands based in the Canary Islands. Where Radar Vol. 1 (2020) focused its sights on rock oriented music, Vol. 2 looks at the more experimental, free flowing side of electronic and sample based music, also made in Tenerife this last year. The format stays the same as Vol. 1: four different artists are invited to contribute two tracks, no rules other than do their own thing. The result being an extraordinary amalgamation of various genres and styles of the electronic music cannon including: smoky dub beats by King L. Man, tropical Casiotone divagations by Usted, inverted and polyrhythmic workouts from the Tupperwear duo, ultra precise dub-tech-2step edits by Postman, and organic psychedelics by freak trio Lagoss. Yet another crucial document from a region you usually do not associate with forward thinking music, more than a simple compilation, Radar 2 unveils the thin veil of new and uncompromising music being produced in and around the orbit of the Keroxen collective. It seems the Atlantic isolation works as a catalyst here, judging from the copious amount of different and challenging music that has been coming from this corner of the world over the last few years. Keroxen invite you to dive in the wild remote tropical waters of Radar 2. Usted's "Salió De La Nevera" features Okydoky. Artwork by Pura Márquez. Mastering by Daniel Báez.

VA Rock Steady Cool CD
Rock Steady Cool is another fine collection of rocksteady hits. The "Cool" subtitle could not be more relevant to an album, as around 1966, an extreme heatwave hit the Jamaican island. This would not stop the all-night dances from going ahead but the jerky ska rhythms proved too strenuous of an activity to partake in, so a new slower beat to suit this extreme weather had to be found and the ever-resourceful music entrepreneurs came up with the slower paced beat and rocksteady was born. This two-year rocksteady period ran until 1968 and would see some of the power escape from the big three producers, Clement "Coxone" Dodd, Prince Buster, and Duke Reid. It was time to make room for a new wave of up-and-coming producers that also had something to offer the people. Such names as Joel Gibson (Joe Gibbs), Sonia Pottinger, Derrick Harriott, and most prolific of them all, Mr Bunny Lee would step forward and add some new musical touches to the island. Rocksteady was an inspirational and somewhat overlooked sound that provided some outstanding music. So, sit back and enjoy some rocksteady straight from the dances of Jamaica. Features The Rudies, Derrick and Patsy, Alton Ellis, The Imperials, Bunny and Bunny, Junior Smith, The Soul Flames, Rico, Fitz & The Coozers, Bobby Kalphat, The Rudies, Derrick Morgan, and Fredrick Bell. FOX, HARDY Ibbur CD
"Hardy Fox used to be composer for The Residents. He left the group when he didn't feel fit enough for touring and when he turned 70. Since then, he has released many albums under the name Charles Bobuck, switching to his real name Hardy Fox when his albums became more personal. The first, self-titled and also known under the name Heart, is a study of the young Hardy Fox, an album about love. The second, Nachtzug is about his last days touring with The Residents. It was followed up by a concept album about a Gorilla, Rilla contemplates Love. Hardy died in 2018 of a brain tumor. Since then, Klanggalerie keeps Hardy's music alive. We have a whole lot of archival music that will be released over the following years. Ibbur is soundtrack music connected with Hardy's serialized novella The Stone, published by himself on his website and through a newsletter. The Stone was a semi-autobiographical project that took a turn into the fantastical."

"A classic masterpiece from 1981, never re-released on CD before. Originally 1000 copies pressed on orange/red vinyl. 120 copies were sold through Rough Trade and Virgin Records. 800 copies were bought and later destroyed by the United Dairies label, making this record even more rare. Hastings of Malawi were Heman Pathak, David Hodes and John Grieve. They recorded the album in one night in 1981 with no plan and no idea of what they were doing. They played drums, clarinet, synthesizer and piano but also made use of things that they found lying around the studio -- old records, cookery books, telephone directories and a telephone. The recordings were played down the phone to randomly dialed numbers and the reactions added to the recording. All three had been involved in the recording of the first Nurse with Wound album Chance Meeting On A Dissecting Table Of A Sewing Machine And An Umbrella and had contributed metal scrapings, piano, effects, clarinet and guitar during the session."

VA Molten Mirrors: A Decade of Livity Sound 4x12" BOX
4x12" boxset version. Comes in hardcase boxset. One of Bristol's foremost electronic labels toasts ten years with a 19-strong family gathering of adventurous, contemporary club music. Livity Sound has evolved considerably since 2011. Originally it was established as a vessel for new tracks from Peverelist, Kowton and Asusu --three Bristol-based artists who found common ground between their distinct styles in pursuit of a reduced, heavyweight strain of soundsystem techno. A run of hand-stamped 12"s and a three-way live show followed, while the Reverse sister label provided a conduit for emergent artists to enter the fray. Early breakthroughs from Hodge, Batu, Bruce and Simo Cell pointed to the broader horizons Livity was heading towards -- an expanding community of like-minded artists creating dancefloor misfits that somehow fit together. First appearing with a compilation of remixes in 2014, Tess Redburn's iconic artwork heralded a fresh new impetus for the label, and the music seemed to become more colorful in kind. While the founding principles of space, bass and fractured rhythms have largely abounded up to the present day, there's been a progressively broader palette of sound employed. Technoid melodic shimmers, earthen percussion and found sounds have become as prominent as sub frequencies and cavernous dub echoes, delivered by a vivid and varied ensemble of producers.Molten Mirrors captures the dynamic energy of Livity Sound at ten years, with 19 artists from the label's roster coming together to present an honest document of where the label is at in the present moment. No over-arching concepts, no hackneyed themes -- true to Livity's open-ended mode since 2011, it's as much a declaration of community as a cross-section of experimental dance music in 2021. Trying to pin down the sonic styles is something of a fool's errand -- from the older guard to recent signings, what binds together this international, inter-generational span of artists is their lack of convention. A case in point: Azu Tiwaline's submerged and subdued rhythmic incantations sit between Bakongo (aka Roska)'s raw and angular drum pressure and Al Wootton's needlepoint, swinging dub tech variations. Nothing is totally placeable, and yet everything meets that ill-defined Livity Sound ethos, which stretches back to the earliest 12"s. Club music continues to mutate and break new ground with each passing year, and as a faithful document of one microcosm within an ever-expanding music culture, Molten Mirrors reflects the multifaceted, technicolor energy of the here and now while celebrating the possibilities of an open, unpredictable future.Features Azu Tiwaline, Forest Drive West, Batu, Two Shell, Al Wootton, DJ Plead, Bakongo, Cando, Facta, Pev & Kowton, Simo Cell, Hodge, Bruce, Kouslin, Jurango, Toma Kami, Ido Plumes, and Surgeons Girl.

UFO95 Use Your Difference To Make The Difference 2LP
After a first amazing LP released in 2020 (MTY 003LP), Mama Told Ya put UF095 in charge once again, but this time, she said: "You've got 10 tracks to blow our mind sweetie. Use your difference to make the difference." Same high-potential kid, no different outcome. And same singularity! Ride with UF095 and learn some good shit about weird techno, IDM, and early gabber. Use Your Difference To Make The Difference brings you through one deep introspection looking for your own uniqueness: please explore yourself. For this new Mama Told Ya LP, the fury(ous) artwork has been commissioned to French digital artist, sltcamille. Her ability to tell melancholic fantasy stories let us all stand in awe. Diplomatie Studio took care of the design, mastering was entrusted to Sixbitdeep -- no difference here. No doubt that with this second album released on the label, UFO95 shows once again that he has something more. A little ounce of digression that makes him very unmistakable. "Wet for it" features ANETHA.

Remastered with bonuses live recordings in London, Paris, Addis, Tokyo, and Cape Town. Imperial Tiger Orchestra, the finest connoisseurs and grooviest performers of Ethiopian music from the golden age. Back in 2007 in underground Geneva, band leader Raphaël Anker decides to gather musicians for a one-off live performance revisiting the golden age of Ethiopian music. A memorable event that forced all the musicians to carry on. As Imperial Tiger Orchestra. Consisting of members with very diverse backgrounds (free jazz, noise experimentations, contemporary music, twisted pop...) the Orchestra soon travels to Addis-Abeba where they perform with local luminaries and deep learn about the large diversity of Ethiopian music. A life-changing experience which brings them back to the studio and to a plethora of successful gigs around Europe, Eastern Europe, Japan, and Africa. The Tiger's unique sound is a mesmerizing re-interpretation of Ethiopian music's golden age mixed with the digitalized themes that appeared in the '80s and filtered through their eclectic influences, a sort of retro-futuristic and progressive Ethiopian rock. This 12-year anniversary edition brings back thunderous rhythms and feverish hooks, down tempo moments and fast paced epiphanies, electronic sounds and ambient nirvanas.

VA Algo Salvaje: Untamed 60's Beat and Garage Nuggets from Spain Vol. 1 2LP
2022 repress; double LP version. Internationally labeled as "nuggets" (after the original compilation of the same name concocted by Jac Holzman and Lenny Kaye in 1972 for the Elektra label), the more common garage rock label has been used to place and describe one of the most fertile chapters of rock & roll history during its most creative years. An underground story which has luckily become known, with participants from all around the globe, which included anonymous musicians, independent record labels with impossible names, and ridiculously limited pressings, often not more than a few hundred copies. Much more important and influential than its level of exposure would suggest, this nuggets-type of music was insolent, proud and self-taught. The trigger of the phenomenon was, without a doubt, the concluding British Invasion to the U.S., which started in 1964: that collective youthful glare provoked by an unprecedented music event in which a number of English bands took up American music and regenerated it in their own personal way. All of them managed to open a big crack in the comfortable status of early '60s rock through which garage rock, in an incredible game of fascination and rage, started to pour freely. This new music, drawing from beat, rhythm & blues and the new psychedelic nuances that already flew over the rock scene, emerged gloriously as a coarse creature. Question Mark, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Remains, The Chocolate Watchband, Electric Prunes, The Seeds, The Standells, Kenny & The Casuals, The Sonics, Music Machine -- and hundreds more bands. They led the American answer to the British bands and they all reached truly fantastic heights, although any list of great names will be insufficient and unfair. Dazzled by that blinding light, thousands of bands appeared from all over the world, including Spain, of course. Few of the expected obstacles derived from the political and social situation in Spain under Franco seemed to matter to these bands. At their own pace and in their own way, and almost at the same time that it was happening on the other side of the Atlantic, the Spanish nuggets got into action and moved from the village music band to the yeh-yeh group. The cleverest teenagers noticed that there was something new in the air, and realized that such intoxicating music enabled them to display attitudes and words which didn't have any other way out in that anomalous society. The breeding ground was usually small labels and sometimes, not often, the bigger imprints would dare take a chance. In both cases, the nuggets-type tracks were always on the B-side of singles and EPs. It's worth it to note the unusual case of Los Brincos and their Beatlesque and thunderous debut "Dance the Pulga," a visionary piece which started the genre in 1964 with all the honors, and whose second 7", Flamenco, introduced one of the key contributions of Spanish garage: noisy approximations or versions of copla and flamenco songs. It was an obligatory and respectable settling of scores with genres of music that were tied to the past and to a model of authoritarian family whose foundations were starting to crack. And although the dotted map of the most prolific areas points towards the tourist sites of the Mediterranean coast, it was actually a global phenomenon which took place in any part of Spain. Coming, most of them, from a middle class background which was starting to consolidate, Spanish teenagers from the '60s employed the same musical models as their foreign colleagues, but their contribution was not only exemplary in many cases, but also specifically genuine. These Spanish Nuggets, an eternal unfinished business of our musical heritage waiting to be reissued, are finally celebrated here on this first volume of Algo Salvaje. Includes extensive notes by Vicente Fabuel, featuring all the original record sleeves and artist photos.

EASTMAN, JULIUS The Zurich Concert CD
2022 restock. "'The composer is therefore enjoined to accomplish the following: she must establish himself as a major instrumentalist, he must not wait upon a descending being, and she must become an interpreter, not only of her own music and career, but also the music of her contemporaries, and give a fresh new view of the known and unknown classics.' --Julius Eastman Just when you think you are grasping the breadth and quality of the music of Julius Eastman (1940?1990), a recording such as Julius Eastman: The Zürich Concert shows up, and you have to go back and reassess his work and wonder what will show up next. This recording is from a 1980 solo seventy-minute improvisatory concert in Zürich, a cherished cassette made by a friend of Eastman's, who recently realized its uniqueness and decided that he should share it. The Zürich Concert was performed on October 25, 1980 in the Aula Rämibühl gallery. Eastman was in Europe participating in The Kitchen tour, and a Swiss friend, Dieter Hall, a painter who had been living in the East Village, arranged the concert. Hall recorded it on a cassette machine, so there is the inevitable gap when the tape had to be turned over, as Eastman played non-stop for seventy minutes. Simply put, The Zürich Concert is a revelation. Listening to this recording, one is overwhelmed by the cascades of sound, the power of the playing. It almost seems as if the piano will start bouncing across the floor like an out-of-control washing machine. But there is also space and delicacy in the playing. As a whole, the music never flags, and your attention doesn't wane, as you are drawn in by the intensity of the playing and the coherence and wonder of the music being made."

BADFINGER Badfinger at the BBC 1969-1970 LP
The Iveys had been a moderately successful Swansea-based beat group in the mid-sixties performing cover versions of the latest pop and soul records before they engaged Liverpudlian Bill Collins as their manager. Collins had known the Beatles back in 1962-63 and was chummy with their road manager Mal Evans, who came along to an Iveys gig in January 1968. This led to the group being signed by Apple Records for a three-year deal. Tom Evans' composition Maybe Tomorrow was the first single. Although it bombed in the UK and USA, it was an international smash released in 20 countries worldwide. "We felt our original name was too nice. And people kept asking us if we were the old Ivy League." In November 1969, The Iveys changed their name to Badfinger to coincide with the release of their recording of the Paul McCartney song, "Come And Get It". Side one of this set contains songs recorded by the Iveys for the BBC in 1969, and side two consists of Badfinger sessions from 1970 for the BBC and a couple of tracks for the German TV program, Beat Club. Recording quality is excellent throughout except for Birthday and Nobody where unfortunately a better quality source was not available.

KEVIN Aftermath LP
The wonderfully named Kevin, are a three-piece band formed in Osaka, Japan in 2017. The line-up at the time of recording/releasing this debut album Aftermath consisted of Hayato Izawa (vocal), Yutaro Umemoto (guitar), and Yuichi Umemoto (drums). The band has been influenced by psychedelic rock, krautrock, folk music, and free jazz. But Kevin is less full-on psych rock than some of their Japanese contemporaries (and new label mates) like Acid Mothers Temple, Mainliner, and Hibushibire. The strong krautrock influence is more prominent in their unique sound. Taking influence from the likes of Can and This Heat, their sound was initially based on noise music. Nowadays, they are minimizing their equipment and developing their own music with a groovy, delicate and devastating band sound. In 2019, the band successfully performed their first show abroad, in Taiwan, and with the worldwide release of Aftermath now via Riot Season records they intend to travel and play far and wide (when rules allow). WILD ROCKET Formless Abyss LP
When not enthralled to the cosmos, Wild Rocket call Dublin, Ireland home. It is from this base that their new record Formless Abyss emanates. This, their third transmission as a musical unit, features three long form pieces of swirling intensity brought to you by Riot Season Records. As a confluence of ideas and methods, Wild Rocket endeavor to interpret the subtle signals of the universe -- the interplanetary vibrations -- and present them as brash manifestations of sound. Scientists and shamans alike have endeavored to interpret the universal whispers, to elucidate meaning from the measurable and the sensible. It is known that to measure and interpret is to alter and color those signals and this is what drives the development of Wild Rocket's sound and interpretation. Formless Abyss showcases the band's unflinching pummeling style, drifting from repetitive blows to unhinged swirls of din yet always remaining innately infectious and perhaps surprisingly danceable. The record is presented as a continuous piece in three parts. The title track "A Formless Abyss" appears here for the first time in recorded form -- a behemoth of a tune which builds around a drone, joined by dual drums and minimal bass locked into a repetitive groove. A groove that is slowly expanded via multiple guitars and synthesis. Vocals eventually join at just the right moment imploring the listener to "leave your criticisms down" and realize "we're all equal now" in the formless abyss or the place between worlds where our earthly preoccupation with human differences are meaningless. The second track "Interplanetary Vibrations" may seem familiar to some in a simpler form. The expanded line-up and extended development of the core theme brings a new interpretation and experience that is more than worthwhile. The track's vocals juxtapose the hybrid Germanic language of English with the ancient native Irish language of Gaeilge. Both used to promote meaning and interpretation of the interplanetary vibrations felt by all. The track features large dynamic shifts and changes of pace, culminating in a wash of smashed gongs and distorted guitars. The final track "Future Echoes" is a doom/kraut juggernaut coming in at just under twenty minutes. Are we doomed to repeat the mistakes of previous civilizations over and over, or can we find the cracks of light that echo through and show us a new way forward? Seaweed green vinyl; includes download code; edition of 300.

MASTER OOGWAY WITH HENRIETTE EILERTSEN Happy Village CD
Back in 2020, Kafé Hærverk, Oslo's live hotspot for a wide range of jazz and experimental music invited Master Oogway to do monthly concerts from August to December, bringing along a guest for each occasion. Two had to be moved to 2021 due to Covid restrictions, but the other three were recorded for possible use later. Initially, Rune Grammofon thought about doing a "best of" from all of the recordings, but after further listening it soon dawned on the label that the concert with Henriette Eilertsen was nothing less than magical. To make room for the 45-minute vinyl edition, Rune Grammofon had to drop one of the five pieces that were played on the night, and also make two minor edits. Other than that, this is what was played, there are no overdubs or cosmetic treatments. Henriette Eilertsen is part of the fertile and exciting environment around the Motvind label, and a member of Billy Meier and Andreas Røysum Ensemble. She released her solo debut Poems For Flute on Motvind in 2021. Håvard Nordberg Funderud finished his Bachelors at the Norwegian Academy of Music in 2018 and also studied in Gothenburg and Copenhagen. He is involved in several projects, Master Oogway being his priority. Lauritz Lyster Skeidsvoll and Karl Erik Horndalsveen are both educated from the same academy in Oslo as Håvard, while Martin Heggli Mellem is educated from the jazz program at NTNU in Trondheim. Happy Village is Master Oogway's third album, their second on Rune Grammofon. The music on the previous outing two years ago, Earth And Other Worlds (RCD 2213CD/RLP 3213LP) was all written by Håvard, while the music on Happy Village is written by Karl Erik, one track co-written with Håvard. Happy Village finds the band in a more lyrical and exuberant mood than before, in no small part due to Henriette's beautiful contributions. Personnel: Håvard Nordberg Funderud - guitar and 12-string guitar; Lauritz Heitmann Skeidsvoll - saxophone; Martin Heggli Mellem - drums; Karl Erik Hornsdalsveen - double bass; Henriette Eilertsen - flute. The album was brilliantly mixed in Athletic Sound by Dag Erik Johansen.

The album features drummer Fells Guilherme (Children of The Pope), bassist Ed "Cosmo" Wright, multi-instrumentalists Dave Hale, Dimitri Ntontis and Stephen Elwell, as well as folk-pop chanteuse Katy Carr on piano and Terry Edwards (Nick Cave, Tom Waits, P.J. Harvey) on trumpet. Scottish singer Julie Anne McCambridge joins Simon on the closing track, the William Blake penned "Earth's Answer". This is Berridge's first output since Bromide's Ancient Rome and I'll Never Learn singles, both released in 2020. Their most recent album I Woke Up (SCRATCHY 050CD/LP), with singles Magic Coins and Two Song Slot, was met with popular acclaim, receiving positive reviews and airplay in dozens of countries. Influenced equally by The Beatles, Neil Young, Mark Eitzel, and Bob Mould, Simon Berridge creates ultra-catchy, jangly acoustic pop/electric rock. Album track "The Skehans Song" pays homage to the club and features the Easycome Choir with Andy Hankdog, Scarlett Woolfe, and Vincent Davies."A febrile soul who can do pop in many voices" --Melody Maker."Simon Berridge's voice is as strong as ever, with the songwriter only gaining in sound and fury" --Clash Magazine."This is catchy, upbeat, well-structured and impeccably delivered -- with a winner of a debut release, Simon Bromide has our attention!" --The Spill Magazine.

SMITH, STEVEN R. Spring LP
"Long into his varied, restless recording life, Steven R. Smith continues to deliver moments of wonder. Spring, like much of his very best, explores small notions that shift and expand to reveal a private sort of grandeur. Joining Smith on Spring is Gareth Davis, the Amsterdam-based bass clarinetist and occasional collaborator of Machinefabriek, Merzbow, Elliot Sharp and Smith himself, and his presence here is crucial. The restrained interplay between Smith (on guitar, piano, percussion etc.) and Davis create a warmth and intimacy akin to Mark Hollis' masterful eponymous solo LP. Steven R. Smith has been a quiet force in underground psych/post-punk circles since the mid-90s. In addition to a handful of classic releases under his own name, Smith is perhaps better known for the material releases under various pseudonyms (e.g. Hala Strana, Ulaan Khol, Ulaan Markhor, etc.) or as a member of cult acts like Mirza and Thuja. Spring is the latest entry point into his own particular version of cinematic composition."

2022 restock; LP version. Includes insert with lyrics, liner notes, and photos. Sommor Records present a reissue of Flibbertigibbet's Whistling Jigs To The Moon, originally released in South Africa in 1978. Whistling Jigs To The Moon is not only a very rare and sought-after album but also a wonderful collection of traditional and original folk tunes with a strong Celtic influence. Featuring Alison O'Donnell and David Williams from psych-folk legends Mellow Candle. In 1974, following the break-up of Mellow Candle, Alison and David arrived to South Africa. Once there, they met a couple of fellow expat musicians, Barrie Glenn and Jo Dudding, forming Flibbertigibbet in a niche folk and traditional circle of immigrant and local musicians, building up a repertoire of tunes and songs both original and traditional. They appeared at evenings held in communal houses, at folk nights and the Boksburg Folk Club. Producer David Marks offered to release their album and launch it in a series of concerts at the renowned Market Theatre. They enlisted the help of a number of fine musicians on the recording, namely classical first violinist Francesco Cignoli, jazz bassist Denis Lalouette, Nippy Cripwell on string bass, Colin Shapiro on flute, and Dave Lambert on fiddle. Whistling Jigs To The Moon saw the light in 1978. RIYL: Steeleye Span, Spriguns Of Tolgus, Fairport Convention. Master tape sound; includes insert with lyrics, liner notes, and photos.

RIPERTON, MINNIE Come To My Garden LP
A proper reissue of Minnie Riperton's debut album Come To My Garden on GRT, originally published in 1970. Her name came to prominence with the highly influential Chicago band Rotary Connection, forerunners of the rock n' soul crossover. In addition to their own recordings, including their 1967 debut album Rotary Connection, the band is notable as the backing band for Muddy Waters on his 1968 psychedelic blues album Electric Mud. Standing on her own, Minnie cut a series of sublime albums moving in a more soulful way. Opening track "Les Fleur" is a shiny cover of a Ramsey Lewis -- who is musical assistant and contributor here -- classic number penned in 1968, literally a cornerstone for contemporary hip-hop and R&B being sampled by the likes of Jurassic 5 feat. Nelly Furtado, Damu the Fudgemunk, Dr. Octagon, and Cut Chemist, among others. Produced by Charles Stepney (already in with Rotary Connection and subsequently behind the desk with Earth Wind & Fire), the album benefits from its lushy orchestral arrangements, pushing the vocal duties of Minnie even forward (her five-octave vocal range, enabled her to sing in "whistle register" nevertheless). The jazzy soft-pop feel overall will mark comparison with Stevie Wonder, Riperton's future employer/mentor. Fully licensed. 180 gram, clear vinyl.

Ten songs to destruction, ten songs to live, ten songs that wrap up all the velocity and disturbance beneath planet earth. Impalers have Sweden in their back pocket, the U S of A dripping down the back of their legs, and use the designs that Anti-Cimex and Discard laid out to mop up the mess. There are other words to describe this blessed mess, but they become insufficient by the time the last track rolls around. In this case, Cellar Dweller can only be described as a party that you've been invited to but that you might not make it out of alive. Full color, hellish and hilarious poster insert by Mason Tucker, and sterile, alienating, squint-to-focus-on-the-horror cover by the steamroller talent J.S. Aurelius." --J. Falco

FERGER, SJUNNE Mind Games LP
Mindgames follows Strangelove Music's previous issue of Sjunne Ferger's early singles and soundtrack work on Childrens Mind (SL 106LP, 2021). Occupying its own hinterland within Scandinavia's early '80s electronic/progressive movements, Mindgames navigates a lifetime of musical and personal exploration by Sjunne Ferger. Child jazz drummer prodigy, arts venue operator, music teacher and Aikido practitioner, a bewildering array of personal and creative influences are distilled into the Örebro native's only long player. Written around a new wave context, his own jazz fusion roots and at times with an unintentionally Balearic outcome, Sjunne goes some way to conjuring up a singular sounding album of the time. Narratives of love and loss, calls to self-empowerment and mindfulness, the new age zeal throughout follows Sjunne's own awakening. Its music caught in meditative reflection one moment before propelling into ecstatic revelation the next, with Sjunne's collective Exit providing electric backing throughout. Propelled by the drummer's beat, it's hard not to be caught up with Sjunne's personal vision of a "Polymood Music" LP painstakingly transferred and fully remastered from the original tapes, with new liner notes and photography.

DOG VERSUS SHADOWS The Lull of the Ley CD
The Lull of the Ley is Lee Pylon's (Dogs Versus Shadows) sonic exploration of writing by the archeologist Bec Lambert (Lady Liminal). The album seeks to reflect her rich dialogue with liminal places, with each track taking a cue directly from her writing. With its landscape of pylons, ghostly photo apps, subways, corridors, substations and beyond, on first inspection this appears to be a lonely place. However, Lee's lively, vibrant score seeks to press further, and you begin to see how this landscape frames the human condition: "This album was inspired by Bec's writing, which often strikes at the heart of what it means to be human. The album is dedicated to every human on the planet -- because we are all connected." Special edition CD includes booklet with an essay by Bec Lambert, interspersed with original artwork by Dan Seville. Features a mix by sevenism."The Hum has been with me since I was a child. It was, and still is, my connector with the world, with the universe. The Hum penetrates through to our very bones, connecting life physically and metaphorically. It pulses through the geological strata, vibrating through wood, water, soil, stone, Now, it also has a modern counterpart within the electric ley. From an early age I began having vivid dreams, where I would leave my physical body restlessly slumbering in its bed, and connect, through the pylons over yonder, with the rest of the world. I'd soar along the electric ley, to far away countries, seeking out others like me, who wanted to be set free from the pain of their everyday existences too."

SUSANNA Elevation CD
For Susanna, nothing happens in a vacuum. Every creative act responds to what's come before. And by exploring this dialogue, you can learn new things about ourselves and the world. This idea has inspired the Norwegian artist throughout her near two-decade career. It's behind her unforgettable covers of classic songs and her interpretations of the paintings of Hieronymous Bosch. And it found its purest expression on 2020's Baudelaire & Piano, a stripped-back song cycle setting texts from the 19th century French poet's "The Flowers of Evil". In Elevation, its follow-up, Susanna's engagement with Baudelaire's work blossoms into a collaborative enterprise, combining tape, spoken word, and song. The result is a unique musical conversation spanning centuries and disciplines; a "time travelling" project, as Susanna puts it, that moves between creative dimensions. She brings collaborators back into the process, nurturing connections made over a series of Baudelaire & Piano live shows presented in 2020 and 2021. Composer improviser Delphine Dora offers teasing renditions of the original French texts, layering spoken recitation and otherworldly singing in a set of atmospheric vignettes. And tape recorder soundscapes from Stina Stjern -- familiar from Susanna's Hieronymous Bosch project Garden of Earthly Delights (2019) -- frame the album with hiss, hum, and soft fingers of melody, like mist settling on a landscape. These contributions deepen the album's mystery and its evocative power. The result is an engrossing interleaving of sounds and registers; and, as Susanna describes it, "an intuitive and collective ceremony of the ethereal and mystical in life." Elevation features work by American occultist artist Cameron (1922-1995), an adherent of Aleister Crowley's Thelema movement. Her illustrations "Witch Woman", "Pan", and "Danse" adorn the release.Oslo-based artist Susanna has released music as Susanna and the Magical Orchestra and "just" Susanna since 2004, through labels like Rune Grammofon, ECM Records, and her own outlet SusannaSonata. She has collaborated with artists like Jenny Hval, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and John Paul Jones, highly active with different projects, songwriting/composing, and making personal interpretations of other people's songs.

The new album is the follow up to the acclaimed 2018 release BlackOut Summer and will provide a welcome musical shot in the arm for fans who have anxiously waited three years for new music from Dusted. "The album's process began with Borcherdt finding a long forgotten favorite song, coming back to him in a dream. That same morning, I found a demo of it, along with countless others, on an old laptop," said Borcherdt. "It was a joyful moment, hearing long lost songs as if I was never part of them. I was a third-party listener thus allowing them to be innocent and unjudged. I added a handful of the favorites to a current set list, which became the inspiration to go into the studio, to lay everything down, live off the floor, simply to preserve them, to keep them from being forgotten again." Dusted's 2012 album Total Dust was selected for the Polaris Prize Long List in 2013. The support from filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallee earned Dusted two songs in his most recent film Demolition and a cameo role in Wild. With Holy Fuck, Borcherdt has been making music for 15 years and has released five albums. Holy Fuck has seen their music played on major TV shows like Breaking Bad and Mr Robot as well accumulating over five million career streams to date. Borcherdt has been releasing solo music since 2002. Previously to Holy Fuck, he was part of By Divine Right whose past band members count Feist and Broken Social Scene's Brendan Canning.

THA RETAIL SIMPS Reverberant Scratch: 9 Shots in tha Dark LP
"What if the Velvet Underground had written 'Wooly Bully' and Sam The Sham 'Sister Ray?' If Ron House picked up some bongos and joined CCR or if Half Japanese and Hasil Adkins started a Meters cover band? This is the scrap yard of the Retail Simp's mind. Gang activity started when moldy Joe (Celluloid Lunch, Itchy Self...) enlisted fellow rhythm bro, Tom tha Moleanderthal (Feeling Figures, Hélène Barbier Band...) to make a perfect record in the Ides of Corona March. A million doll hairs and several rock bottoms later, the idea was to make something that would easily fall apart, this was executed with Montreal's best and brightest in the wings, lending a foot (all in the name of bogtime[sic] exposure). Bathroom-stall-wart and Barstool-smart Chrispy Burns (Terminal Sunglasses, American Devices...) was brought in to add his patented 'racket roll' guit-o-rama. James 'Gogo' Goddard (SkinTone, Egyptian Cotton Arkestra...) skronked his reliable sax machine and the ticket was printed. Short on practice and high on ideas, thee Retail Simple Tones were born, well-traveled and unraveled individuals, bound by a musical adventure. Now to show for it, Reverberant Scratch is a nine-track ruckus of tinny guitar sketching, horn-honking deliberations, keyboardarific doodles, and whatever else one can summon in a basement to bang on. It's a ramshackle party stabber. Loose, loud, and 100% TOTAL PUNK!!!"

FENNESZ SAKAMOTO Cendre 2x10"
2022 repress. Issued for the first time on vinyl, this classic album from 2007 was the first full-length pairing of these two maestros, before releasing Flumina in 2013 (TONE 046CD). Ryuichi Sakamoto and Christian Fennesz blend the unstructured and imaginative qualities of improvisation with the satisfying sculpture of composition. Sakamoto's piano, his style reminiscent of Debussy and Satie, perfectly complements Fennesz with his powerful blend of shimmering guitar and passionate electronics. Cendre was recorded between 2004 and 2006, Fennesz would send Sakamoto a guitar or electronic track and Sakamoto would compose his piano piece. Vice versa -- Sakamoto initiating a track with a piano composition and Fennesz responding. Meanwhile they met for live shows, or communicated via digital means to compare notes, swap ideas and develop themes. The cyclical process continued right up until they met up for the final mix in New York City February of 2006. Together they have combined to create 11 tracks of satisfying and challenging possibilities...

BASHO, ROBBIE Venus In Cancer LP
2022 restock, last copies. "Though frequently overshadowed by his contemporary and Takoma Records labelmate John Fahey, the compositions and performances of Daniel R. Robinson Jr., best known by the stage name Robbie Basho, were integral in the development of the American primitive guitar style. Along with Fahey, and songwriter/composers such as Max Ochs, Leo Kottke, and others, Basho helped bring to the masses the distinct form of guitar finger-picking, which blended folk and country-blues with neo-classical composition techniques. Unlike his contemporaries, Basho went a step further by incorporating unorthodox open tunings on his 12-string guitar, as well as elements of Indian classical music, inspired by the sarod-playing of his mentor Ali Akbar Khan. Unfortunately Robbie Basho passed on in relative obscurity at the early age of 45 due to a fatal stroke, so he was never able to witness the extent of his influence. Nonetheless his legacy lives on in the works of American primitive guitar revivalists like James Blackshaw and Glenn Jones, as well as indie folk units like Currituck County or Six Organs of Admittance. All of Basho's signature stylistic elements are on full display on his 1969 album Venus In Cancer, which added onto his dextrous, steel-string finger-picking, additional cues from raga, flamenco, Appalachian folk, and even foresaw the arrival of new age music. A mystical and astrologically-inspired collection of guitar improvisation, one which clocks in at nearly 50 minutes, and a perfect representation of Basho's visionary American folk brilliance."

DE WITTE, CHARLOTTE Weltschmerz 12"
Turbo Recordings present a lovingly rendered reissue of Charlotte de Witte's debut EP in black marbled vinyl. Lead track "Weltschmerz" is a Berghain classic; dark, massive, trippy, and with an emotional character all too rare within the genre. The kicks are banging, the verbed out percussion is fierce, and it all moves around a haunting melodic breakdown that artfully dances on the right side of "progressive". It's a killer track that perfectly sets the tone for the whole record. "Damage Control" is a straightforward flex-a-thon, a house-ier rhythm that struts along confidently. The technical term is "floor-filler". "Lonesome" brings the emotion back, with its super-tense, unresolved melodies, this is perfect for all your mega-club yearning and gurning needs. "Relatives of None" is the nastiest of the bunch, and probably the most at home on Turbo, built around a screechy synth hook. Finally, "Weltschmerz (Melodic Theme)" provides an epic ambient outro, crystallizing the emotional tones of the EP and establishing a sense of artistic vision that ascends well beyond the pedestrian.

LINARES, ALFREDO Lo Que Tengo LP
2022 repress. Alfredo "El Inca" Linares is one of the best and most beloved musicians in the history of salsa. Fans love his piano playing because of his authentic Cuban feel and "swing" combined with progressive arrangements and uncompromising phrasing that puts one in mind of Eddie Palmieri. As a composer, arranger and band-leader Linares is highly respected as well. Lo Que Tengo is full of rock solid dancefloor killers and no filler, played with verve and flair. Unlike some of his other records that were patched together from various sessions made in different studios, this album has the advantage of being produced, recorded, and mixed by Alfredo Linares all in one studio and block of time, and backed by hand-picked seasoned professionals. The album was recorded in 1980 in Caracas with some of the cream of the crop of contemporary Venezuelan salsa musicians and launched there on the indie label A.L.G. Records as ¡Con Todo!, and then a year later on the much larger Velvet Records with a different cover. The LP was also released in Colombia and the US, both editions utilizing the Velvet Records cover. During this time Linares had been in Venezuela for some five years and was under contract with a nightclub in Caracas. After the contract was up Linares was a free agent again and he was able to draw on his friendship with Mango and assemble a band to back him, first for the Colombian/Venezuelan production Salsa de Verdad (1976) and then again with ¡Con Todo!/Lo Que Tengo. One of the distinctive aspects of Alfredo Linares tunes is the "break" (la cierre) -- there are always plenty of dramatic hand-clapping breakdowns followed by an infectious tumbao (sustained vamp) section. In addition, Linares always lets his musicians stretch out, especially in the percussion section. Again, Lo Que Tengo is no exception: there are so many examples of typical arrangements here that one could call this a classic Alfredo Linares album, but with the updated studio sound of 1980s Caracas, which was awash in petro-dollars at the time and so had the latest equipment and a strong consumer base for the salsa market. With five perfectly paced salsas, one funky cha cha chá, a steamy bolero and a dance-friendly Latin jazz number to top it off (note the bluesy piano solo from Linares and the sublime vibes of Mango's Freddy Roldán), there is something for everybody on this record. Presented in its original artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.
