All Inn Black meets "Feeleed." The famous underground event in the Ukraine is spreading the tunes of talents such as Yate, Ja.sha, and Rayo & Eric. Decent house basics, lightweight atmospheres and a pinch of funk. Take it and love it.

ALLEVIATED RECORDS

ML 9009LP

HEARD, LARRY: Alien 2LP (ML 9009LP) 23.50
Repressed. Double LP version. One of Larry Heard's most under-rated albums finally remastered. Known for his classic early house releases, Larry Heard's productions always hinted at deepest outer space, but his 1996 Alien album was his first actual science-fiction record. It's almost as polished as the most mainstream dance production, but just as sublime as any Detroit producer. Heard's house roots often show themselves, while the chords and shimmering production make this an album almost on par with Heard's mid-'80s peak. The project was a recording and sound-development experiment that was mostly constructed around a Korg O1/W workstation keyboard that was left at Larry's studio to check out by Victor "Melodious Myles" Houston along with some of the staples of his studio, including the Roland d550 and Oberheim Matrix 1000. Mr Fingers' magic touch can be heard all over the album, and this showcases the incredible musical talents of the man, whose name by now can't be left out from any hall of fame when you're talking music innovators from the last century.

ANALOG AFRICA (GERMANY)

AACD 076CD

MESTRE CUPIJO E SEU RITMO: Siriá CD (AACD 076CD) 15.50
Cametá, a historical little Amazonian town on the shores of the river Tocantins, is the birthplace of the scorching music known as "Siriá"; a cross-pollination between the music of the inhabitants of the quilombos, a Brazilian hinterland settlement founded by escaped slaves of African origins, and the indigenous people of the Amazon rainforest. It is a breathing, pulsing, emphatic beat, and the modernized version of this local music, created by Mestre Cupijó, has been igniting street parties and traditional festivals across the state of Pará in Northern Brazil for decades. And at last in 2014, the combustible sound of Siriá will be celebrated internationally as the feverish, tropical sound of the summer. Foretelling his talent to flow between cultures, Cupijó was named after a local river when he was born in 1936, into a family of musicians. His father, Mestre Vicente Castro, was also known as Mestre Sicudera, the musical director of Centennial Euterpe, one of Brazil's oldest bands, founded in 1874. At 12, Cupijó started to play the clarinet. He also became proficient at the piano, mandolin and guitar, although the instrument that came to personify his sound was the alto saxophone. Waltz, bolero, cha cha cha and an assortment of dance hall music became part of Cupijó's repertoire, but it was Carimbó and Siriá, the music played by the black communities of Pará, that had the strongest impact on the young musician. To grasp the soul of this music, Cupijó went to its source and lived with the quilombolas (maroon) community of the Amazon. Upon his return, enriched by this life-changing experience, he founded the band Jazz Orquestra os Azes do Ritmo with the goal of reinventing Siriá and modernizing Samba de Cacete, Banguê and other folkloric music of the state of Pará. Airwaves from the Caribbean and Latin America had also brought the cumbia sound of the mighty Colombian orchestras, merengue from the Dominican Republic and Cuban music to the Amazon, all of which had an impact on the music of Northern Brazil, mambo especially! Mestre Cupijó took these influences and mixed them in with the ingredients he had studied in the Quilombos. That fusion -- as we are witnessing on this record -- had explosive effects. After the initial wave of enthusiasm, the first two LPs were recorded with rudimentary equipment in a dance club in Cametá. However, it was the third attempt, recorded in a studio in Belém, which would trigger a phenomenal success. "Caboclinha Do Igapo" and "Mambo do Martela," included on this record, became instant hits. A year later, "Mingau de Açai," one of Cupijo's most popular tunes, took the region by storm. In total six LPs were recorded by Mestre Cupijó. Analog Africa is ferociously proud and honored to have the chance to present these carefully-selected tracks from Mestre Cupijó's six studio albums, and hope that his music captivates you with the magic and bewilderment that it has them. Let go of your inhibitions and immerse yourself in the wonderful world of Mestre Cupijó... Segura! Housed in a 8-panel digipak with extensive liner notes.

AUS MUSIC (GERMANY)

AUS 1463EP

YOUANDEWAN: Youandewan EP 12" (AUS 1463EP) 14.00
Youandewan presents a self-titled suite of deep, jacking dance tracks on Aus Music. The swinging, acid-flecked "Tino" kicks things off on a moody tip before the steady-groovin' "Alright Son" goes to a duskier, deeper place, keeping the jacking feel of the first track intact but smoothing things out with dreamy pads and looped, spoken vocals. "FM Jam" is presented first in its original form with disco-esque bass, soulful vocals, gentle keys and titular FM synths. This makes it an all-too-perfect remix for Andrés, who applies his signature vibe and smoothes it out even further into a soulful neo-disco-house cruiser.

BANG! RECORDS (SPAIN)

BANG 077LP

PERKINS & THE DARK HORSES, TEX: Everyone's Alone LP (BANG 077LP) 21.00
Here it is, finally out on vinyl, the new album by Tex Perkins & The Dark Horses. As usual in this project, Tex Perkins dives into the most intimate side of his music and sounds, covering melancholic passages and acoustic dark ballads full of emotion and intensity. The Dark Horses include, apart from Tex Perkins (Beasts Of Bourbon, Butcher Shop, The Ape), Charlie Owen (Beasts Of Bourbon, New Christs), Joel Silbersher (Hoss, God), James Cruickshank (Cruel Sea), Gus Agars (The Ape), Steve Hadley (Tex Perkins & The Band Of Gold) and Australian soundtrack writer Murray Paterson. Another magnificent piece of music for you to share with nobody.

BANG 080CD

DRONES, THE: I See Seaweed CD (BANG 080CD) 18.00
Bang! Records presents the new album from Australian rock legends The Drones. I See Seaweed is their best record to date and gathers all the complexity and greatness of the different sounds and faces of the band, led by Gareth Liddiard. Amazing lyrics fit perfectly with measured melodies, and each and every one of the five band members melt, creating a perfect sound. Intensity and sound explosions meet anxious quietness and tension. This is one of those records which grows with every listen, that you'll never get tired of playing, over and over again. The Drones are touring Europe in June-July 2014 and Bang! Records is proud to release this masterpiece on CD.

BANG 080LP

BAOBAB MUSIC (GERMANY)

BBM 001EP

MR RAOUL K: Still Living in Slavery - Part Two 12" (BBM 001EP) 14.00
This 12" is the first in a triple that will make up the vinyl version of Mr. Raoul K's album Still Living in Slavery -- his first album on his own label. The second 12" will be released in a picture sleeve that will be able to hold all three records. "Intelligent Revolution" is an epic 13-min+ rollercoaster ride without any dominant kick-drum. Traditional African instruments fuel an irresistible groove that keeps pulling you in. Ron Trent flexes his remix muscle on "Sene Kela" and applies his warm deep house sound to this vocal-driven track. Simbad's treatment of "Dounougnan Magni (Chapitre 3)" pushes this already dynamic track even further.

BASAEC (GERMANY)

BASAEC 002EP

LUCIAEN: Origins/The Great Amael 12" (BASAEC 002EP) 14.00
Luciaen aka Lucien Nicolet presents the second chapter in his Basaec series, with Origins. The new label from the Cadenza Records boss looks back to the roots of his production career, while presenting a futuristic take on electronic dance music. "Origins (Wild Origins)" is a colossal 12-minute piece of neo-classical electronics. Waves of arpeggio synth dominate the beatless track, its mighty stabs and light percussion propelling it along at great speed and urgency. "The Great Amael" features a lo-fi bubbling groove and dusted Hammond organs hustling along while the live percussion shines through. Energetic and infectious, the tone softens with oceanic pads that provide its classic melody.

BROUQADE (GERMANY)

BQD 033EP

DISUASIV: Divers 12" (BQD 033EP) 12.50
"Divers," having already passed the club test with flying colors, is now ready to see the light of day on vinyl. The track cruises effortlessly through the darkness of the night, past whispered messages, bringing the light back onto the dancefloor. Produced by Disuasiv -- a collective group of three like-minded musicians and friends, more commonly recognized in the music industry as individuals: Dragosh, Andi Parlogea and Cally. With clear beats slides "Divers Antren" onto a sleek sound carpet, casting a hypnotic spell, pulling you into its maelstrom, taking no prisoners. Pure dope for the mind.

CIRCUS COMPANY (FRANCE)

CCS 089EP

GUILLAUME & THE COUTU DUMONTS: The Fight Within EP 12" (CCS 089EP) 12.50
"'A Single String' rolls, it bounces, and that synth line will hopefully make your little fingers reach up for the stars, and strings. 'Keys for Hanuman.' This one will be a personal mystery until the day I die. Though I have a relatively organized numbering system and decent memory, I had no recollection whatsoever about starting, recording, or even thinking about this tune. 'Winning all the Battles (But Still Losing the War)'" Time to go back to the essential? Refocus our act? Step out of the limelight and dive deep into the stuffy, obscure, low-ceiling groove box?" --Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts

CCS 090LP

DAVE AJU: Black Frames 2LP (CCS 090LP) 23.00
Double LP version. Black Frames is a creation from two major life transitions for Dave Aju, namely the end of a long-term relationship combined with a move away from his hometown of San Francisco. Punctuated with philosophical statements and political punches, the former MC proves he isn't afraid to use his voice and production skills to unite music and passion with his latest album on Circus Company. The outer rhythms of deep-rooted electronic music form the backbone of Black Frames, while its veins are filled with the red-hot attitude of hip-hop, outerspace soul, and forthright lyrical content. A remarkable variety of songs covering topics such as personal relationships, cultural issues and global government actions rock alongside bass-centered dancefloor bombs. Through its body, Aju also tips his hat to '60s psych rock, early '70s fusion, and the soft undertones of blues as can be felt in the magnum opus of "Vins Noirs" with its full choir finale, the wildly fun and uptempo "Bee's Birth," and the reflective close of "When We Drift." With a decade of releases under his belt and remixes for the likes of Nicolas Jaar, JT Donaldson and Herbert, San Francisco Bay Area native Marc Barrite aka Dave Aju is a true maverick of the electronic music scene and Black Frames is a proper follow-up, both a literal nod to the classic '60s/'70s artwork that hung in his home studio, and a bold statement toward that rare place where breaking a sweat and breaking the rules come together. Aju's distinctive voice, a fixture in his production and live performances, has proven to have a life of its own. His formative years added stripes to his coat as an MC in the underground hip-hop scene, paying off in consequent vocal contributions for fellow artists like dOP and Tiefschwarz, and an ongoing collaboration with fellow Circus Company artist Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts as lead vocalist for The Side Effects band. Aju's third album features collaborations with close friends and hometown-heroes of the San Francisco scene, including SF/Chicago masterclass act DJ Tyrel Williams teams up on "Nobody Knows." Once again, Dave Aju takes us on a personal journey set to the groove of a damn good party.

CLR (GERMANY)

CLR 078EP

FLORES, LUIS: Test Pattern 12" (CLR 078EP) 14.00
For CLR078, the Berlin based techno imprint calls upon on one of Mexico's most reliable providers of unconventional, genre-crossing electronic music. As usual, Luis Flores delivers his unmistakable trademark style with a minimal use of elements, a rich spectrum of textures and a dark, trippy dancefloor pull. On Test Pattern, the man who actively helped Guadalajara, Mexico to become a hot spot for electronic music, releases two outstanding original productions entitled "Program" and "de-Program." Includes a remix by Tommy Four Seven.

CMYKMUSIK (SPAIN)

CMYK 039EP

UNDER, ALEX: Azul Ostra 12" (CMYK 039EP) 14.00
After some harder releases on Trapez, Alex Under focuses on his trademark crossover techno -- not easy to label into any specific genre, but a sound full of personality. "Bailar Pegados" is the kind of track that Herbie Hancock would have carried in his vinyl case to every club. "Oh Boy" brings the listener into a robot party at the Blue Oyster, the club that gives name to the track on the B-side "La Ostra Azul," an arpeggiated retro-futuristic bomba.

COMET (FRANCE)

COMET 059LP

AFROBEAT MAKERS: Afrobeat Makers - Tony Allen Rhythms Revisited Vol. 2 LP (COMET 059LP) 23.00
Following Afrobeat Makers Vol. 1 (now sold out), Comet is pleased to announce the second volume of the Afrobeat Makers collection. Tony Allen's original Afrobeat patterns revisited by some of the best international DJ/producers, among them: Doctor L (Paris), Thiago Franca (São Paulo), mps PILOT (Amsterdam), and GnoWee (Paris). Tony Allen has spread Afrobeat to the corners of the globe -- a perfect synthesis of tradition and sophistication. His various collaborations with great artists from all genres and styles is truly proof of his openness. Doctor L, a Paris based music producer, is a sound activist going through musical galaxies, fusing '80s punk rock to hip-hop, electronica and Afrobeat. In 2000 on Comet Records, he brought Lagos' Afrobeat into the third millennium with the album Black Voices by Tony Allen, and also presented his other project, Psyco On Da Bus. Since 2002, DJ/producer mps PILOT has immersed himself in the cutting-edge tropical bass scene. He slips between genres in every possible direction, mapping the cross-pollination and divergence of contemporary music. He has performed on three continents -- both in the remote desert and at major festivals. Thiago Franca is a producer, musician and saxophonist from São Paulo's art scene. He released an album with his power Afro-punk trio Meta Meta for the first time in 2014, and he is also developing his African-rooted solo outfit, Sambanzo. He was also in Criolo's touring band for two years, where he met Tony Allen, which led to two collaborations on the first Afrobeat Makers and Meta Meta albums.

CORRESPONDANT (FRANCE)

CORR 028EP

AGENTS OF TIME: Polina EP 12" (CORR 028EP) 14.00
Agents Of Time deliver another brooding, evocative EP for Corespondant. The Italian trio of Andrea Di Ceglie, Fedele Ladisa, and Luigi Tutolo draws a whole spectrum of sounds from their studio in the EP's title-track, which has already seen play by Dixon, Agoria, and Tale Of Us. "Magdalene" is built around layers of sinister sound. From inside raw percussive scaffolding, detuned synth flourishes come prowling out of the shadows to stalk imperceptible prey. Alex Smoke's version of "Polina" rides on an undulating groove, honing in on only a select few elements from the original, before surging into tearing feedback and detuned, empyrean choir chords.

CULTURES OF SOUL RECORDS

COS 007LP

DAVIS' GHETTO MYSTICISM, STANTON: Isis Voyage: Unreleased Music and Alternative Mixes from the Brighter Days Sessions 2LP (COS 007LP) 20.00
Double LP version. "The original spacey jazz funk sound of the Brighter Days album by Stanton Davis' Ghetto Mysticism Band has been championed by everyone from Gilles Peterson to Andrew Mason of Wax Poetics to hip hop producer and rapper Madlib. Isis Voyage is a collection of unreleased music and alternative mixes from the Brighter Days sessions. Many of the tracks on Brighter Days were shortened to be more accessible to the listening public. Isis Voyage contains the original, longer versions of many of these songs including 'High Jazz' and 'High Jazz Reprise.' Back in October 2012 Stanton Davis and Cultures of Soul Records' label head, Deano Sounds, went into the studio to mix down tracks from the original multitrack reel to reel tapes. Two unreleased tracks, 'Odwalla' and the title track 'Isis Voyage,' were among the material discovered while mixing down the music."

DEEK RECORDS (NETHERLANDS)

DEEK 006EP

NAUTIC: Navy Blue 12" (DEEK 006EP) 15.50
Nautic is a union of like-minded musicians comprised of Nathan Jenkins (Bullion), Laura Groves, and Tic Zogson (Young Turks). The trio have all been individually busy with other projects; Tic collaborating and playing live with FKA Twigs, Laura releasing her own solo EP, and Nathan producing records on Deek. But Navy Blue sees them reassembled once again. Around the core members of the group is an ever-expanding set of live and studio collaborators including Laura Coulson (whose vocals feature on "Lay Back"), Ben Reed, Shabaka Hutchings, Jesse Hackett and Fabiana Palladino -- that has seen them support the likes of Braids and Sean Nicholas Savage.

DELSIN (NETHERLANDS)

DSR 106CD

YAGYA: Sleepygirls CD (DSR 106CD) 17.00
Icelandic producer Yagya releases his fifth album, Sleepygirls. It's a deep, spacious and dubbed-out affair that stays locked at a pleasingly sedentary tempo throughout. Since 2002, the definitive member of the Thule Musik collective has been crafting lush electronic albums under his Yagya alias and always manages to find pure bliss and beauty and his simple, nature-inspired soundscapes. He deals exclusively in full-lengths and to date they have come on labels like Sending Orbs, Force Inc. and Subwax Bcn. "I wanted to create an album that's atmospheric, repetitive, and easy to listen to over and over again," says the man himself. "Something that works well in the background (e.g. when concentrating on work), as well as up close in a big sound system. I also wanted to learn how to make my music sound better than before, since I'm a huge sound-nerd, so that was a part of the goal for me personally." The album is a fine fusion of tropes from Yagya's earlier albums, features jazz instrumentalists that improvise beautiful melodies over monotonic, almost drone-like, techno beats, and also uses live recordings of Japanese vocals, saxophone and guitar to counter the repetitiveness of the rhythms. Right from the rolling bliss of the opener, you're suspended in a womb-like pillow of sound that is soft, warm and serenely beautiful. As tracks roll on, the pace stays the same but themes vary from upright and summery to more elongated and insular. This is natural, organic dub that is a delight and a pleasure to listen to. The vinyl versions of each track have been specially mixed with random LFOs, sonic quirks and unique fingerprints, making them subtly different to the CD version, but overall, this is a brain-soothing and mind-melting album that can soundtrack lazy days, long summer afternoons and warm winter evenings in equal style.

XDSR 006EP

IN SYNC: Storm/Subway Route 12" (XDSR 006EP) 12.50
Delsin's re-issue and re-release arm follows up with a trip back to an early UK techno heyday. In Sync aka Lee Purkis played a key role in the development of house and techno in England. The re-issues presented here have been fully licensed by Delsin from Irdial and have been transferred from the original master reel-to-reel tape for full authenticity. "Storm" (1992) is an epic 12-minute+ track that travels to the furthest regions of our galaxy where warm solar winds breeze past, the sound of spaceships circles you and pinging kick drums drive you along. "Subway Route" (1993) sounds like Boo Williams jamming with Carl Craig.

DIRT CREW (GERMANY)

DIRT 079EP

DETROIT SWINDLE (FEAT. MAYER HAWTHORNE): 64 Ways (The Remixes) 12" (DIRT 079EP) 12.50
Following the great success of Detroit Swindle's Boxed Out (DIRT 006CD/LP) album, here is their second single take-out. Their collaboration with Mayer Hawthorne on "64 Ways" has already gained massive support and Dirt Crew are proud to present you this remix pack. Kerri Chandler turned the original version of "64 Ways" into a true Kerri "Kaoz" Chandler tune with the use of his trademark key progressions and drums, and he also includes a vocal remix. Detroit Swindle's own remix proves what a monster tune this is. Kraak & Smaak came up with a full-on disco house stomper, with an earworm bass line.

DISCREPANT (UK)

CREP 011LP

PHIZMIZ, ERGO: Two Quartets LP (CREP 011LP) 25.50
Discrepant presents an album from UK-based radio producer, collagist, writer, composer, and filmmaker, Ergo Phizmiz. White label, hand-stamped, limited. Vinyl only. ''Imagine a machine where any material can be placed before you, and infinitely bent, squashed, stretched, rotated, inverted, repeated, depleted, converted, bastardized, beautified, mortified, twisted, shifted, and at no cost to the original material at hand. This original material, be it a piece of wood, or a piggy-bank, or a toaster, or a dog, can, at the whim of the operator, either be integrated into the mishmash of metamorphoses, or can sit from a distance and look on at all of his transformed clones. The digital sound editing environment, of all the achievements of computing, is the place where dreams can be given free rein. Any sound can be metamorphosed into any other. Anything can dance with anything else, in layer upon infinite layer, and the nature of the object itself can whirl and shift and change and play and do anything it bloody well wants to do. This is something I whiled away ten years playing with, until sound feels like a gelatinous gloop that can be formed between the hands. But then my fingers became sticky. And the only solution to sticky fingers, of course, is to clean them. Consequently, the computer has become like a slightly removed acquaintance cum employee. And, for better or worse, every return I make to the digital music environment becomes overcome with theory, or at least, limitations. The collages included here as 'Two Quartets' are explorations of the pure interaction of four different pieces of music, without any interference as to the nature of the sounds -- nothing has been digitally manipulated. The focus is purely on editing -- both of a technical-musical nature, and games of chance, throwing different materials together in space-and-time and seeing how they party.'' --Ergo Phizmiz

FAVORITE (FRANCE)

FVR 092LP

SOLOMKO, ANDRE: Le Polaroid LP (FVR 092LP) 25.50
Favorite Recordings presents Le Polaroid by André Solomko. Born in the Ukraine in 1965 and now based in Finland, Solomko is primarily a rich and engaging personality, but above all, a brilliant saxophonist and true musical aesthete whose contagious passion will not leave anyone indifferent. After beginning a meteoric career in the USSR, fate led him to Finland, where after some difficult years, he started Vinyl Jam, a label/studio/group based in Helsinki that resulted in two self-produced albums between 2006 and 2009. These albums captured the attention of some international collectors, including Pascal Rioux, founder of Favorite Recordings, who immediately felt in love with André's style and analogic sound. Rioux offered to produce André's third album, released in 2012 and titled Où es-tu maintenant? (FVR 070LP). Hailed by some renowned amateurs and tastemakers, this third album also met notable success in Japan, thanks to the support of local label P-Vine Records. True to André's passion for film music and '80s jazz-funk, but also to his tradition of always producing and recording his music in analog, Le Polaroid is a continuation of its predecessor and builds a stylized musical kaleidoscope. Surrounded by a team of talented guest musicians such as Alain Mion (Cortex), Mr. Day, and Finnish singer Stiina, Andre Solomko appears at his best, displaying a subtle sense of melody and remarkable ease for composition. Housed in a deluxe LP in a tip-on jacket.

FIGURE (GERMANY)

FIGURE 056EP

CLERIC: Wickerman EP 12" (FIGURE 056EP) 12.50
Cleric continues to build on his raw yet sharp and accurately-cut techno sound with his new EP for Figure. This varied four-tracker shows off the British producer's tastes for textural, ambient soundscapes and edgy broken beats, alongside pure and straight-ahead club killers. "Tentative" features shadowy undertones, sound-system feedback and murky basement textures, while the steady punch of "Sigmund" translates these textures into a 4/4-driven jam. "Conflict" comes on strong with angry synth motifs that swirl and build around a rock-solid platter of bass energy. Finally, the inventive broken beats of "Wickerman" shatter the 4-to-the-floor template in a tense and tracky exploration into more challenging zones.

FRANK MUSIC (GERMANY)

FM 013EP

RALPH & LARRY HOUL: Back to You 12" (FM 013EP) 14.50
Frank Music presents the very first vinyl release of Monsieur Ralph (aka Flabaire from Collectif D.ko) on the machines and Monsieur Larry on the mic. They got it all: The French Touch. The Sweetness. The Song. The Beauty. The Fun. The House. The Pop. The Machines. The Dance. The Happiness. Da Funk. "Day by Day" is no-nonsense piano vocal house. Made for peak-time use and hands-up happiness. "Back to You" is more on the mellow tip. "Need You So" even offers a little guitar solo, and Iron Curtis twists it into some modern cosmic XTC, starring a monster bass line.

FREAKADELLE (AUSTRIA)

G.E.D. SOUL

GED 1008LP

AJ AND THE JIGGAWATTS: AJ and the Jiggawatts LP (GED 1008LP) 18.00
LP version. "From the opening bars of their debut LP you can tell AJ and the Jiggawatts came to play rough. In a world where mid tempo and middle of the road soul permeates the airwaves, this crew of G.E.D. soul killers are drawing a line in the sand by making soul music that hits harder, faster, and nastier than just about anyone in the game today. AJ Eason's gin soaked vocal howls drop with a carefree carousing not unlike that of a street smart hustler making moves to make ends meet. The band follows suit with highly syncopated melodies, often at breakneck speed, all while maintaining an almost inhuman tightness. Toss all of these elements into a highball glass and garnish with a pinch of rock 'n' roll soul and you've got the makings for a serious raw soul cocktail."

OL' DIRTY BASTARD: Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version 2LP (GET 52716LP) 23.00
2014 repress. "It's safe to say that hip-hop has never seen an album like Ol' Dirty Bastard's 1995 solo debut Return to the 36 Chambers. The brief glimpses of ODB's unhinged genius provided by Wu-Tang Clan's landmark Enter the Wu-Tang album two years earlier were begging to be expanded on to a larger canvas, and, with RZA guiding production, the album promised to give Dirty the creative license to make one of the most bizarre, entertaining and original LPs in hip-hop history. With his raspy, drunken flow and dark sense of humor, Dirty fearlessly attacks from all angles, throwing himself fearlessly into punchy rhyme attacks ('Damage,' with GZA), drugged-out party jams (the monster singles 'Brooklyn Zoo' and 'Shimmy Shimmy Ya') and bizarre, grimly hilarious fantasies of sex and violence ('Don't U Know' and the R&B-tinged 'Sweet Sugar Pie'). Backed by RZA's appropriately gritty, dissonant beats and appearances from the Clan, Return became an instant hit, selling over 1 million copies and earning a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album in 1996. The album stands as a high water mark in the Wu Tang Clan's collective creative output and was selected as one of the Best 100 Rap Albums by The Source magazine in 1998. In honoring the legacy of one of hip-hop's most innovative releases, Get On Down is proud to present this incredible and unique special edition of Ol' Dirty Bastard's Return to the 36 Chambers as a double LP which contains the complete original album, remastered for optimal sound quality." Includes 18"x24" poster.

SOULS OF MISCHIEF: 93 'til Infinity 2CD/BOOK (GET 56017CD) 28.00
"Reissued for the first time as a 2CD set, Get On Down's deluxe version of Souls Of Mischief's classic features the original album, as well as bonus remixes and instrumentals all bundled in a 36-page case book filled with art elements, liner notes, and interviews. The book even plays a clip from the title track when opened. Consisting of MCs A+, Phesto, Opio and Tajai (with production by A+, Domino, Del the Funky Homosapien, Jay Biz and Casual), East Oakland's Souls of Mischief burst onto the scene in the early '90s with an impact that few other West Coast artists had at the time. Culminating in the release of their classic debut, they created a bouillabaisse that was most parts West Coast swagger but -- similar to The D.O.C. and Cypress Hill -- with a sonic approach that could just as well have stepped off the streets of New York City. Put to tape in less than two weeks at San Francisco's Hyde Street Studios, 93 'til Infinity doesn't suffer from a single freshman jitter or misstep. It's a fully-realized effort, packed from start to finish with ridiculous lyricism -- all carried out in impressive four-part, tag-team style -- and backed by a wide range of musical possibilities, from hard boom-bap to '70s CTI-jazz-sprinkled grooviness. But without worthy music, the group's high-level lyricism could have fallen by the wayside. Digging deep into crates that other producers had yet to mine, the production crew gave the quartet exactly what they needed, with unpredictable rolling basslines, dusty drums and jazz keyboard and horn stabs and swirls."

BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS: Criminal Minded Cassette (GET 801CS) 11.00
"Get On Down has noticed that cassettes are continuing to see a resurgence in interest, especially for classic material. And few titles in the hip hop canon are as certified classic as Boogie Down Productions' Criminal Minded presented here in a stylish black shell. Criminal Minded was included in Vibe Magazine's 100 Essential Albums of the 20th century. KRS-ONE's combination of street slang and Webster's Dictionary knowledge backed by Ced Gee & Scott La Rock's hard hitting, minimal beats helped set this album apart when it was originally released in 1986. With this now legendary debut album, BDP helped redefine the New York rap music scene. Criminal Minded elevated the standards and proved that rap could be a dynamic and consciousness-raising medium. Since its release, KRS-ONE has gone on to become one of the most prolific and critically-acclaimed artists in hip hop history."

GUESS 124LP

THOMAS EDISUN'S ELECTRIC LIGHT BULB BAND: The Red Day Album LP + 7" (GUESS 124LP) 29.00
One of the most exciting finds in recent years is the previously-unreleased album from 1967 by this obscure U.S. psychedelic band, recorded around the same time of their ultra-rare Common Attitude 45, (famous for appearing on the Alien, Psychos & Wild Things comp). Led by the great Richard Orange, Thomas Edisun played Beatlesque, psychedelic pop/proto power-pop of the highest order with amazing songs and incredible harmony vocals. In 1967, just after Sgt. Pepper had come out, the band decided to register their own psychedelic masterpiece, so they entered a rudimentary studio and recorded a whole album during a weekend, under the influence of "smoking" and "mind-altering" substances . The album was never released, the tapes were stored in attics and basements, and the band broke up with some of their members forming cult power-pop band Zuider Zee. The Red Day Album ranges from pure Emitt Rhodes-Macca pop to Forever Amber/Lazy Smoke-styled lo-fi pop-sike and almost early Caravan keyboard freak-outs. Remastered sound from the original tapes. Includes an insert with photos and detailed liner notes by Jeremy Cargill (Ugly Things/Got Kinda Lost). Includes a 7" repro of their rare Common Attitude/No One's Been Here for Weeks 45.

HELL YEAH RECORDINGS (GERMANY)

HYR7 135EP

DIMITRI FROM PARIS & DJ ROCCA: Disco Shake 12" (HYR7 135EP) 14.50
Dimitri From Paris and DJ Rocca team up on a new single for Hell Yeah. The stunning original, "Disco Shake," comes backed with remixes from Luminodisco, JKriv, and Tom Moulton. Dimitri From Paris is a true electronic music legend -- he pioneered his own French house sound at the start of his career, has mixed seminal compilations and has remixed everyone from The Rapture to Storm Queen. DJ Rocca is one of the key figures in the new Italian house scene. This single is a foot-stomping bit of disco with organic drums, breathy vocals and plenty of laser-like guitar lines shooting through the arrangement.

HYR7 139LP

TEMPELHOF & GIGI MASIN: Hoshi LP (HYR7 139LP) 21.00
Hell Yeah is proud to announce the release of Hoshi, another exciting full-length album project that again involves the talented Tempelhof, this time in association with legendary Italian composer, director and musician Gigi Masin. Fellow Italians Luciano Ermondi and Paolo Mazzacani are known for their hugely musical electronica and earlier in 2014 they released Frozen Dancers (HYR7 123LP), which was a master-class in spacious and emotive sound that was a joy to get lost in. For this next album, the pair team up with legendary producer Gigi Masin, who played a key role in his country's music scene from the 1970s onwards on radio, on television and in theater with his directorial work. Always a fine source of inspiration for newer generations, the likes of Björk and To Rococo Rot have been known to sample Masin's sumptuous sounds. Together, then, Masin and Tempelhof make perfect sense as a musical partnership, as this album proves across the course of its 10 elegant tracks. The album is an exploration of peaceful ambient, of organic musical textures and brain-soothing soundscapes that are as classically informed as they are contemporarily creative.

HERAKLES RECORDS (FINLAND)

HRKL 003LP

COLA & JIMMU: I Give to You My Love and Devotion LP (HRKL 003LP) 23.00
LP version. Recording artists and husband and wife team Jimi Tenor & Nicole Willis, release the follow-up album in their project Cola & Jimmu, after the debut Enigmatic (HRKL 001CD/LP). The album features their production skills as well as their skillful compositions. With instrumentation by Tenor and beats procured from the vintage gear of Jori Hulkkonen in his Turku studio, the album has a warm feeling and yet is sufficiently exciting for the electronic house heads. There are plenty of string pads, flutes and flute pads, etc., to prick up your ears. Cola & Jimmu once again capture a genuine, old school sound. "Earthly Delights" is a track with a perfect balance of hypnotic acid riffs and jazz elements, while "Immortal Champion" draws from a fascination with Greek & Roman mythology, applied to funky jazz/house, made all the funkier by the percussion of Daniel Oberto from the Machete Horns based in Berlin. "You Keep Me Working" features loads of tension in the harpsichord progression, and there are plenty of jazzy saxes and flutes from Tenor. "Fantabulous" is a sultry nod to Miss Janet Jackson with lots of electronic sounds, jazz inflections and rolling, natural snares. "Open Up Your Chakra" features vocals by the Lehto daughters, and "Meet You at the Crossroads" is akin to Robert Johnson meeting nervous house with swinging percussion and tenor horns. On "No More Wars" acid filters mix with sampled acoustic piano licks as well as congas by Daniel Oberto. "I Give to You" is acid and industrial meeting up with acoustic pianos, cinderblock sounds and filtered percussion.

BEBETTA: Electric Train EP 12" (KALLIAS 017EP) 14.00
Electric Train is the first EP from Bebetta on Kallias Music. This four-track release features two originals and remixes. "Electric Train" is a cheery and house-y track that will help you dance into sunnier days. "Do Kraja" is a little darker and more blue. It is the cry of Croatian Marko Jankovi?, who puts his emotions into words alongside beats by Bebetta. Even though the language is foreign and therefore exotic, the mood conveyed is familiar to everyone who just wants to dance and doesn't want to go home. Remixes by Rich vom Dorf and Tonarmee.

ESS O ESS: Baboon 12" (LOTR 002EP) 14.00
Love On The Rocks returns to the floor with their second EP, presenting the world premiere of Ess O Ess -- a new venture from London-based producers Jamie Blanco and Chris Stoker. "Baboon" features a jungle motif that slowly fades into the mild breeze of a distinct guitar theme before shaman voices call the ghosts of their ancestors. Tiago uses the jungle setting to create a classic special agent disco movie scene set in the exotic wilds of the mid-'70s -- erotic adventures included. Bad Passion offers a dub version that detaches the bass guitar from the original, allowing appropriate space to grow and delay.

BIXIGA 70: Ocupai LP (MAIS 024LP) 15.50
LP version. Includes download code. Mais Um Discos are thrilled to provide the worldwide release of Bixiga 70's Ocupai -- a heart-stopping carnival of Afrobeat & Brazilian funk where Ethio-jazz, brass bands, polyrhythmic paeans, Bootsy Collins jams and Saharan grooves combine to produce a riotous joy of stomping rhythms and horns. Hailing from the Bixiga neighborhood in São Paulo, Ocupai sees the band build on the sound that saw their self-titled debut album top many Brazilian tastemakers' best-of lists for 2011. They combine the obvious touch points of Fela Kuti (the band's name tips a hat to the most famous incarnation of his band) and Tony Allen (with whom Mauricio Fleury from the band studied with) and bounce through boundaries to harvest textures of mandingo from Guinea and Mali, soukous from the Congo and Ethio-jazz -- all the while pulling in threads from the pioneers who first caught their ear; Pedro Sorongo, Os Tincoãs, Gilberto Gil, João Donato, Baden Powell, Deodato, Orchestre Poly Rythmo, Miles Davis and Lee Perry. Having collaborated with Souljazz Orchestra, Criolo, Emicida and Banda Black Rio, the band have also shared the same stage as their heroes Antibalas, Ebo Taylor, Tony Allen, Gilberto Gil and Q-tip at the likes of Denmark's Roskilde and Amsterdam's Paradiso.

MEXICAN SUMMER

MEX 189EP

VIET CONG: Cassette 12" (MEX 189EP) 15.00
"Viet Cong is a new project made up of four distinct voices. Matt Flegel and Scott Munro (respective former members of beloved Calgary band Women, and Chad VanGaalen's band) spent much of 2013 in their basement studio with a mess of old and run-down equipment to build a set of fresh material. Joined by bandmates Daniel Christiansen and Michael Wallace, the band completed work on a debut cassette. What emerged from the studio was a mixture of sharply-angled rhythmic workouts and euphoric '60s garage pop melodies, balanced with a penchant for drone-y, VU-styled downer moments."

MEX 195LP

BAUER, PETER MATTHEW: Liberation! LP (MEX 195LP) 21.00
"Liberation! is the title of Peter Matthew Bauer's debut solo album, a poignant and anthemic blend of soulful balladry, folk-tinged meditations, and full-bore rock & roll, crafted with an oblique nod towards the explosion of art, rock, and attitude that emerged from NYC in the '70s. Formerly a member of beloved NYC group The Walkmen, Bauer uses Liberation! as an opportunity to welcome the rest of the world into his personal history of a childhood spent living in ashrams, and a life shaped by the constant presence of religion and mythology amidst uncertainty. It's a bold, bracing collection of songs for the mind, body and spirit with the power to grab you and shake you out of your environment. Leveraging traces of Eastern arrangements in a solidly Western rock experience, Liberation! is the soundtrack of one man's journey inside himself, in preparation for the rest of the world to follow." Gatefold sleeve; numbered edition of 1500 with download card.

MUNSTER RECORDS (SPAIN)

MR 345LP

VAUGHN, BEN: Texas Road Trip LP (MR 345LP) 19.50
LP version. "Texas music has always been a big mess, and that is probably the biggest single thing that has made it stand tall. There are so many wild strains running through it -- from blues to country to jazz to soul to rock to, yes, even hip-hop -- that it's impossible to keep track of what's what. But confusion is good, because as long as a listener can't quite pin down what makes their monkey nerve twitch they'll keep coming back for more. Ben Vaughn got bit early by the heat in the Texas beat. More specifically, as a young kid in New Jersey, Vaughn tuned into San Antonio's Sir Douglas Quintet. There was a wildness in the Quintet's hit "She's About a Mover," some wiggliness that just would not stop. Sir Douglas Sahm and his cohorts had the magic in them. There was no other way to put it. It was like there was a fire burning in the Quintet's collective soul that could not be put out. Vaughn also has that fire, and in a dream-come-true, he's gone to the source in Texas to record an album with several Sir Douglas veterans, including main keyboard man Augie Meyers. That alone is like having the Crown Prince on hand. Then there's Alvin Crow, Speedy Sparks, John X Reed and Mike Buck. With a musical bunch like that, there is no way to miss the bull's eye. Ben Vaughn has delivered an album full of original songs, ones that capture the wild wind of the Sir Douglas Quintet while adding some modern velocity to the sonics, that will light up the skies and surely make even Sir Doug himself smile as he floats through the cosmos making sure the groove never stops. Far-out, for sure." --Bill Bentley

"To tide over the hunger of J Dilla-fanatics, Ne'Astra Music Group now presents the Vintage EP, a 10-track record featuring upcoming tracks from Yes. Though Vintage is technically an EP, it's not to be under-estimated. Slum Village come full force on Vintage, backed by some premium grade beats, including a few tracks built around long-lost Dilla beats, with instrumentals on the B-Side. Guest appearances from fellow Detroit MCs Black Milk and Frank Nitt, and up-and-coming rapper Kameron Corvet further bolster the Vintage EP's potency. A preview of great things to come from Slum Village, and yet another testament to Dilla's far-reaching legend."

NNA TAPES

NNA 070LP

PHORK: High End LP (NNA 070LP) 18.00
"High End is the latest musical installment from the People's Higher Order of Royal Kinship, as facilitated by Los Angeles producer Neal Reinalda. With recent releases on Opal Tapes and Orange Milk, as well as two previous NNA full-length cassettes under his belt, we are pleased to offer PHORK's debut vinyl record to the masses. On High End, Reinalda digs deeper still into the established PHORK sound world, procuring a modern conceptual take on the idea of 'ambient music' as constructed with pieces of the dance music and musique concrete sonic palettes. The process unfolds in an almost visual manner where short blocks of sound are sculpted into assorted shapes and sizes, then stacked and arranged meticulously to create a skyline of rigid musical architecture. Whether they are electronically generated or captured in the field, the sounds are given the same treatment of deconstruction and reassembly to create new lenses of context. Scenic and situational field recordings are used to explicitly depict the world of the modern human, tapping into the nostalgic and almost mundane facets of daily life, extracting them from their associations, and allowing the listener find new meaning by examining them in a musical setting. Dripping water, a Fourth of July fireworks celebration, the motherly sound of a female voice, the shrill buzz of modern machinery... although these sounds are firmly grounded and not at all otherworldly, they are often coupled and blended in a subversive manner. In the stylistic tradition of the People's Higher Order, these organic sounds are interlaced with a latticework of dry electronica, using traditional techno materials to establish a rhythmic and melodic foundation with an emphasis on inhuman flatness and non-dynamics. Layers are built up and repeated, interacting with other layers as the resulting compounds are patiently added and subtracted, driving onward in a perpetual cycle of blooming and wilting. The resulting creation of a surreal narrative is something rare and unique in such a functional genre as dance music. Always the trickster, PHORK has tendency to embrace juxtaposition and luxuriate in the discomfort of hearing sounds play themselves out. High End succeeds in utilizing music to take on an anthropological voice, meditating on the routine and mediocrity of modern American society in an age of nihilism and discontent. The Royal Kinship often prides itself on generating more questions than answers."

Dennis Ferrer's Objektivity imprint releases a stellar new two-tracker in the form of remixes of Ane Brun's "To Let Myself Go" from Dennis Ferrer and André Hommen. This well-crafted EP showcases a tug-of-war between ethereal and electronic. With Dennis Ferrer providing a slower groove and André Hommen a driving bass line, the world-acclaimed Ane's soul-drenched vocals ring out across this EP, forging a unique sonic landscape. RECOLLECTION GRM (AUSTRIA)

REGRM 012LP

VA: Traces Three LP (REGRM 012LP) 22.00
Recollection GRM, a label within the Editions Mego family of labels, offers a third selection from the vast archives of Groupe De Recherches Musicales (GRM). The main idea behind the Traces series is to excavate short, forgotten or ignored pieces of music from the GRM Archives. This third volume, gathering pieces from before 1980, features the works of four composers from very different geographical and musical backgrounds. In addition to echoing the extraordinary vitality of musical experiments from a bygone era, Traces aims to give some audibility to music pieces which, in some instances, are being released for the very first time.Charles Clapaud, "Ruptures" (1978): "The idea of the break (rupture) as a disruptive phenomenon should be integrated into discourses and perceived musically: to break the silence, a matter, shapes, plans... in this musical piece, two main parts can clearly be identified: in the first part, the chaotic activity of the sound material (crumbled, fragmented, discontinuous forms) blossoms into a static burst. A sustained deep tone settles within a sort of 'Cadence' and highlights a solo sequence of discontinuous sound 'lines.' The entire sound spectrum then erupts, abruptly interrupted by three loud blasts. In the second part, the fragmented form unfolds as a whole initial sequence, followed by a second one where other forms overlap in a kind of sound collage that induces emergent phenomena. The piece ends as a sharp break." --C.C.Janez Mati?i? , "Hypnos" (extrait de Trois Visions) (1975): "This non-progressive piece is composed of several sequences, each introducing an additional element and ending with a twist. A quiet swaying from one framework to the next constantly defines the sound quality of the piece, just like blurry visions tantalize the dreamer one after another." --J.M.Servio Tulio Marin, "Impresiones Fugitivas" (1976): "This piece is based on the process of sound as a solid material. The shape and height of a concrete, granular texture (very similar to white noise) is being transformed. While still unfolding, this process is being interrupted at several stages by various interfering elements with opposite natures. This gives rise to a complex dialogue between distinct materials, like a counterpoint expressed through sound spatialization." --S.T.M.Eugeniusz Rudnik, "Moulin Diabolique" (1979): "The work consists of six sequences which all possess a dramatic, musical and architectonic sense independent from the context. Their position in the composition as a whole -- apart from sequences 2 and 6 -- is not derived from any absolute necessity. The basic material of this work consists of military orders given in different languages and of the sounds (voices) of a human group (soldiers). These -- assuming the order implies a constraint -- can either be the single answer to such a constraint or they can accompany it. Through editing, the sense of military discipline was removed from the ordering sentences, thus enhancing the grotesque and terrible content of the order itself. [ ... ] The possibility of identifying the sound sources (speech = order with its semantic, semiotic and associated values), the formal structure of the composition is to remind the listener of the constant presence by his side of the Evil Mill (Moulin Diabolique) of war. A mill that has been turning on and on for thousands of years -- and for how much longer? I dedicated this work to my daughter Kamila Maria." --E.R.

RWINA (NETHERLANDS)

RWINA 005LP

KRAMPFHAFT: Before We Leave 2LP (RWINA 005LP) 29.00
In the space of three years, Dutch producer Krampfhaft has established himself as one to watch with a small string of functional yet emotive dancefloor releases that have garnered support and acclaim from a broad range of contemporaries including The Gaslamp Killer, Om Unit, DJ Shadow and Kutmah. He returns to the Rwina label with Before We Leave, his debut album and most complete statement to date. Once more pulling from the twin roots of electronic/dance music and sound design that have defined his work to date, Krampfhaft sidesteps genre specific formulas on Before We Leave and instead rides a fine line between dancefloor and headspace. There are hard-hitting moments and ecstatic peaks, but these are carefully balanced with more introspective, melodic reflections designed to give the listener an experience that isn't limited to the club. Before We Leave is just as driven by atmospheres and imagined sonic places as it is by the desire to make people dance. This juxtaposition of the dancefloor and headspace is reflected in the album's tracklist and how the sixteen tracks flow across its length. "Superfluid" offers the first upbeat moment, solid drums against grinding synth melodies, but the accumulated energy of the track is instantly pulled back by "Frostbite," as Krampfhaft plays with imperfections and bright, distant melodies to paint a sonic picture of slow deterioration across a sparse rhythm. The imperfections and noise found lodged throughout the album bring to mind a digital rot, as if the music was slowly unravelling in the hard drive of its maker. Tracks like "Dormant Code," "Before We Leave," "Mostly Empty Space," "Unfold" and "Immensely Small" all sidestep any obvious genres, instead scraping away at imposed stylistic boundaries by subverting populist tropes and challenging the listener to embrace them for what they are. As a contrast to the album's more reflective moments there are rays of hope, such as "Veluwe" and "Extrasolar," with its low-slung drum pattern, uplifting melodies and manipulated sounds that evoke seagulls over washing waves. And there are also moments of darker contemplation, like "Clip Point," where the all-encompassing weight of the bass drums is cut by a lead melody that buries itself in your subconscious. The energy of the dancefloor is celebrated on "Spinner" and "Toekan," two tracks with clear intent that still manage to reference the album's underlying idea of rot and distance from any established genre or scene. There's a real magic to pulling off an album of dance/electronic music that isn't obsessed with the dancefloor or instantly recognizable tropes, and this is precisely what Krampfhaft achieves with Before We Leave. Keen to not find himself trapped in the corner of a specific sound, he instead opts to paint a broad picture that treats the listener as more than just a body in the dance. At times hopeful and introspective and at other times dark and obsessive, Before We Leave is the sound of a producer in full control.

Slow Motion's new soundtrack series presents a stunning four-track release from Marco Antonio Spaventi. While recalling influences as diverse as Jan Hammer, John Carpenter, Goblin, Giorgio Moroder, Daniele Patucchi, the De Angelis brothers and many other legendary (mainly Italian) composers from the soundtrack side, these tracks are just as comfortable on the electronic dancefloor and provide a dancing experience every bit as engaging as a listening one. Synth-heads, soundtrack aficionados, space-freaks and dance fiends are all set to enjoy this one in equal measure. Move fast, as copies are limited and demand is high.

STAG-O-LEE (GERMANY)

STAGO 053CD

VA: Savage Rhythm: Swingin' Dance Floor Sounds to Blow Your Top CD (STAGO 053CD) 17.00
New musical styles don't appear overnight. Rock and roll didn't explode out of a vacuum and Elvis wasn't the Big Bang (more like the start of rapid inflationary expansion). Before Elvis, there was a massively diverse R&B scene in the States, which today's record buyer is currently enjoying the discovery of through a wealth of compilations and reissue 7"s. In turn, this music was a development of the sound that came before it, with many of the key players having been instrumental in the swing bands of the '30s and early '40s. Savage Rhythm is a compilation of this fantastic music, documenting the direct lineage from the jazz and swing of the '30s through to a more R&B-ready sound of the early '40s, signposting the way ahead for what was to become jump blues and eventually rock and roll. Compiled by Brighton (UK) DJ, music-lover and vinyl junkie Shamblin Sexton, Savage Rhythm is put together to make the party swing hard. As much a ticket to the good times as a history lesson, Savage Rhythm delivers both with urbane style and swagger. With original artwork by graphic designer Chris Sick, this compilation will be a must-have for the vintage kids & R&B heads, as well as the electro-swing DJs and club-goers. Savage Rhythm swings a hefty punch of serious, quality music that is as vibrant and essentially vital today as it was 75 years ago.

THE TRILOGY TAPES (UK)

TRILOGY 018EP

MINOR SCIENCE: Noble Gas 12" (TRILOGY 018EP) 19.00

THEOMATIC (RUSSIAN FEDERATION)

THEOM 018EP

AMBERFLAME: Unique 12" (THEOM 018EP) 12.00
The eighteenth Theomatic installment comes courtesy of Amberflame. The A-side "Unique" is a lean towards the early-naughties dancefloor-oriented French electronica with a certain amount of delicate synth-work and contemporary crispness blended in. The laidback and melancholic "Ultra Violet," on the flipside, would, without any doubt, make a perfect soundtrack to a sunset drive down the coast with a beautiful lady in a convertible.

FENNESZ: Venice CD (TO 053CD) 14.50
2014 repress. "Venice was recorded on location in the summer of 2003 and subsequently assembled and mixed at Amann Studios, Vienna in January/February 2004. Venice, the fourth studio album by Christian Fennesz, finds electronic music at a crossroads between its early status as digital subculture, and the feeling that there has to be something more, an emotional quality that rises above noise and moves towards melody and rapture. Includes the continuation of his collaboration with David Sylvian on the track 'Transit', following the success of their duo on Sylvian's 2003 solo album, Blemish.Fennesz burst upon the scene with Instrument [Mego, 1995] and followed that up with a succession of ground-breaking and highly original solo albums. As The Wire wrote, 'he offers all the puzzles and adventures of experimental music, but with a more assimilable grasp of melody -- and a prominent role for the guitar', and to be sure, 'though the process may sound simple, it takes some skillful manipulation to simultaneously tug those heartstrings and poke them with tiny pins.' [Nick Phillips, City Pages, USA]. Fennesz has been active in film soundtrack work -- for Gustav Deutsch and his forensic view of cinema, film ist'... Live performances, improvised music within a modus operandi that adheres itself more to jazz than computer software... everywhere from Tokyo to Bratislava. Fennesz has also taken part in many collaborations: Fenn O'Berg, with Jim O'Rourke and Peter Rehberg [Mego], a duo with Rosy Parlane [Synaesthesia], and with Polwechsel [Erstwhile]. He has also been recording with Sparklehorse, the first fruits of this collaboration appearing on the recently released Spire [Touch # Tone 20]. He lives and works in Paris and Vienna."

Originally recorded in a Chicago club one November night in 1966, King and a group of session heavyweights unleash a set of standards and originals upon an eager audience. B.B. King is flanked by several revered blues sidemen including Sonny Freeman on drums, Kenneth Sands on trumpet, and Louis Satterfield on bass, to name just a few. In the end, the star of Blues is King is King himself, frequently bantering with the club audience, and spinning musical stories of heartache and rage with his impassioned vocal roar, and precision blues guitar zeal. VAMPISOUL (SPAIN)

VAMPI 055LP

DAVIS, BETTY: This Is It! 2LP (VAMPI 055LP) 25.50
Double LP version. 2005 release. The former wife of Miles, Betty Mabry Davis is perhaps the only woman in the world who could rightfully have the following legend tattooed across her rear: THIS ASS INVENTED FUSION. While their marriage only lasted a year (1968-1969), Betty pointed the way to Miles, introducing him to the musical and material gods of revolutionary style: Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, which would have an enormous impact on his electrified musical Frankenfusion masterpiece known as Bitches Brew. Betty ruled as the mentor-muse for the original man and his music. She was a woman with the strength of a Black Panther, a "nasty" woman in total control, but unfortunately for Betty, America was not yet ready to embrace a woman with such an explicitly sexual persona. She had a much rougher edge to her music than other female funk and soul artists of the '70s. Betty Davis' is one of the most extreme sounding debut records of the decade, which just like Bitches Brew takes equal parts inspiration from Hendrix and Sly. One critic aptly described their sound as something like a cross between Tina Turner, Funkadelic, and Sly & The Family Stone. Add the futurist fashion sense of David Bowie, and the flair of Miles Davis, and you have quite a cocktail. This is the best of Betty Davis' three much-sought albums.

VAMPI 159LP

BIO RITMO: Puerta Del Sur LP (VAMPI 159LP) 16.50
LP version. Blazing a trail by playing some of the hardest-hitting and far-reaching modern salsa for 23 years now, Bio Ritmo have grown into one of the most intriguing and influential Latin dance bands of the last two decades. They are true rebels who have defied being pigeonholed and have helped pioneer a new generation of musicians (aka Nueva Generación) that thrive on the spirit of experimentation that once defined the '70s Latin sound that became known as "salsa." From hipster rock clubs in Brooklyn to "salsa bars" in Cali, Colombia, Bio Ritmo keeps the bodies on the dancefloor with their nitty-gritty, vintage grooves while turning heads with their experimental synth tones, innovative harmonies and thought-provoking lyrics. They convert the skeptics who only know the overly commercialized, tacky veneer of Latin music and challenge the purist who hitherto believed the genre died during the '90s. They have a fierce, almost punk-rock DIY ethos that pervades their attitude and style, releasing their records either by themselves or on indie and hip-hop labels like Merge, Fat Beats and, Electric Cowbell. They cite Stereolab and Brazilian psychedelic music as influences in the same breath as name-dropping Ray Barretto, Roberto Roena and classic Fania records. It's no surprise that their new record, Puerta Del Sur, is presented on Vampisoul, a Spanish label whose mission is to resurrect "lost" Latin music. The title of the record, Puerta del Sur, which translates as "Door to the South," addresses Bio Ritmo's unique and seemingly incongruous placement in the locale of Richmond, Virginia. It's a cosmic coincidence that has nurtured the group for its entire career. "It's where we're from. We're a southern band," Puerto Rican-born lead singer and composer Rei Álvarez posits. Each track on Puerta Del Sur takes the listener on a different journey through Afro-Cuban and other rhythms, mixed with far-reaching harmonic movements blended with vintage keyboard sounds, analog synthesizer surprises and sophisticated, stylized horn arrangements. '"Codeína," the final track, stands out as the most unique and innovative song on the album. Written in the aesthetic of a Latin bolero-meets-1960s Egyptian-classical, it features a string section, Farfisa organs and various Arabic percussion instruments. It is a collaboration between Bio Ritmo's main writers Giustino Riccio, Álvarez and pianist and composer Marlysse Simmons, who cite inspiration from their obsession with '60s and '70s Arabic, Greek and Turkish music. Bio Ritmo are true Latin music visionaries. The group's innovative and unique approach to the genre puts them at the forefront of the "new generation of salsa music."

VLEK (BELGIUM)

VLEK 016EP

LE DOUX, LAWRENCE: Terrestre 12" (VLEK 016EP) 15.50
Four house- and techno-inspired dancefloor tracks from Lawrence La Doux, a Brussels producer who has released under various aliases over the years. This four-track 12" EP for Vlek shapes styles until the distortion the artist forces upon them passes from the uncomfortable to the pleasant. "Afruita" features a steady, pulsing rhythm with a sun-soaked melodic line. "Astre" is just as steady but mellower. "Chorus" features the interplay between a steady four-to-the-floor kick and a bouncing bass. "Terre" concludes the EP with angular, twisted chords that shine bright one moment and disappear in a fog of filter the next.
