Amigos de Maria Rock lp

Amigos de Maria Rock lp

lp 2005/1973/1968 new Awesome deluge of hard fuzz pounders from Chile. Get whiplash from trying to keep track of all the sick & nasty riffs. Heavy & unbalanced versions of the Box Tops' 'The Letter', Ray Charles' 'What'd I Say'. Some songs are in English & some in Spanish. Band also made a couple of singles backing obscure South American/Russian rockabilly cult-hero Dean Reed (whose nickname in Chile was 'Mr Simpatia').

Atelier Mediterranee 7 inch

Atelier Mediterranee 7 inch

7 inch 2011/2010 new Incredibly tense single-note guitar whacks, savage jolts of keys, background yowling, & twitching digital drums piled on top of each other willy nilly. Singer from Cheveu & a pal playing with mentally handicapped children. Said to be part of a series where musicians played with criminals & street musicians, but so far this is the only release. Genuinely cathartic.
Bruit Direct $5.50

Bernd Witthuser Lieder von Vampiren Nonnen und Toten lp

Bernd Witthuser Lieder von Vampiren Nonnen und Toten lp

lp 2009/1970 new 1st Witthuser & Westrupp, although the latter doesn't get credited on the cover. Acoustic ditties in German, about vampires & other verboten/unusual topics. If you don't speak German, they do get some pretty decent sub-Clive Palmer harmonies going now & again. Flute, mandolin, & a drum sound that reminds of someone banging a shoe against a couch cushion.
Wah Wah $25.00

Chris Corsano Another Dull Dawn lp

Chris Corsano Another Dull Dawn lp

lp 2009 new Static synaptic splat and hairy flexes of Corsano's considerable hippocampus powers. Percussion pushed to it's limits: by rumbling things set on snares, bows, & the scraping of some alien titanium. At times, the whole thing floats so thickly that it nearly forms into a doppleganger of Paul Flaherty. You also get a few rolls meant to kick in Elvin Jones' paunch, and some beastly sound effects of sea captains being warned by lighthouse bells, or planes landing next to your head. Helluva slab.
Ultra Eczema $20.00

Ennio Morricone Spasmo cd

Ennio Morricone Spasmo cd

cd 2006/1974 new Morricone blends clarinets, electronics, & strings for some high clouds of sliding buzzes that nearly beat Gyorgy Ligeti at his own game. There's also a great harpsichord riff, the sproing of metal rods being plucked, ticking snare drums, and big thick bass walks. Umberto Lenzi's movie is full of yachts, wax dolls, mannequins, & Italian summer houses. It's about an elder brother whose rich father has just died. He keeps being attacked by the same assasin even though the hero has already killed him a couple of times, and it's unclear whether it's the hero, the supporting cast, the director, or the moviegoer who's losing their grip on reality. Suzy Kendall (from Argento's 'Bird with the Crystal Plumage') shows up too.
Digitmovies $22.50

Fille Qui Mousse Trixie Stapleton 291 cd

Fille Qui Mousse Trixie Stapleton 291 cd

cd 1998/1972 new Always gets compared to Faust because of the hard edits- they're so arrythmic & interruptive- always arriving just about the time you'd forgotten there might be another one coming. And the jumps are stylistically odd too: from slowed down piano to funky drum patters just sitting there unaccompanied, from shimmering cymbals to stoned incanting with barking dogs. Even more: schizoid eastern violin solos, stoner jams dripping with flute & fuzz bass, loops of colliding inanimate plonks. One of the best records on the beloved Futura label and Nurse With Wound list. Henri-Jean Enu ran an underground magazine called 'Parapluie' & supposedly got his friends to make this record all in one day before deciding to become a painter instead of the French Conny Plank.
Spalax $15.00

Genesis P Orridge/Stan Bingo What's History lp

Genesis P Orridge/Stan Bingo What's History lp

lp 2012/1983/1981 new Wonderfully dreamy bedroom exploration between Genesis, who was slowly leaving Throbbing Gristle at the time, & Stan Bingo/Dan Landin, the producer of 'Heathen Earth', all around video guy, and sometime mixer of live TG shows. A vibraphone chimes sweetly over a tangled bed of distorted electronics. Who knows what's in the black boxes making all the fuzzed-out mess, but the vibes really contribute a eerie atmosphere. When a nearby dog starts barking, you're instantly ready for a Hammer horror movie to start rolling. Should be much better known than it is. Originally a cassette.
Dais $23.50

Group Inerane Guitars From Agadez Vol. 3 lp

Group Inerane Guitars From Agadez Vol. 3 lp

lp 2011/2010 new The Hendrix-fried griot jams & somnolent group syncopation played here began as Gaddafi training camp songs in the mid-80s (which spawned a band called 'Build the Country', as well as the famed Tinariwen). Marginalized between the intersection of Mali, Niger & Algeria's respective governments, & sometimes forced into famine despite the continued fuctioning of the area's numerous uranium mines, the Tuareg have been involved in guerilla fighting sporadically for many years. In 2010, rising tensions resulted in the death of one of Inerane's guitarists, Adi Mohamed. As a result, guitarist Koudede (who already tours France under his own name & whose style is closer to the doink & twang of John Lee Hooker) was recruited for this recording. Reclaimed generators & exigent circumstances being the rule, improvising with what's handy proved no problem for Inerane's lead guitarist Bibi Ahmed.
Sublime Frequencies $20.00

Joe Jones In Performance lp

Joe Jones In Performance lp

lp 2002/1977 new Zero-info boot featuring this Fluxus automatic music machine maker. Joe started out as a jazz drummer in late 50s NYC. It didn't go well, most likely because there was already a jazz drummer named (Philly) Joe Jones who played great, always had pot, and even did cool Dracula impressions. In the early 60s, this Jones studied under Cage & Earle Brown, went on a trip to Europe with Dick Higgins, & started making machines. He returned to NYC for a brief spate in '69 to rent a little store/gallery where his machines sat in a window & you could press a button on the outside wall to make them run for a few minutes. He appeared on Yoko Ono's 'Fly' & basically did intermittent gallery installations until his death in 1993. Jones' machines were mostly constructed with rubber bands & tinfoil, & included musical boats, solar powered musical umbrellas, pedal cars that pulled trails of handmade instruments on wheels, etc.

Justin Heathcliff cd

Justin Heathcliff cd

cd 2005/1971 new Danglewristed & fey baroque beatleisms with elegant elec guitar arrangements & enchantingly mangled lyrics. Made by an ex-GS guitarist (in the uber obscure band the Launchers) who moved to the UK in '71 just so he could be closer to his beloved lollipop-sike favorites. His real name was Osamu Kitajima, and after this record he gave up on the style, got into New Age & moved to LA instead.
World Psychedelia $16.00

Justine cd

Justine cd

cd 2008/1970 new Baby butt smooth softpop from London with lots of dreamy harp, LA-style choral arrangements led by crystalline female vox & a depressed, bummer vibe that can't be beat. 2 bonus tracks not on the previous cd issue.

Kevin Drumm Land of Lurches cd

Kevin Drumm Land of Lurches cd

cd 2003 M-/M- Snake pit of distorted crunches and abrasive howls. Inclusion of a few digital whirrs and static bursts, and even clear tones: for taking in a breath before dunking your head again. Drum's reluctant, recalcitrant personality comes through, and I'm not sure he's made a better one than this.

Kito Mizukumi Rouber Midori Mushi San Connichiwa 7 inch

Kito Mizukumi Rouber Midori Mushi San Connichiwa 7 inch

7 inch 2010 new Little bird tole me there was a version of 'Michael Row the Boat Ashore' here, and jerk that I am, I totally thought it was a sarcastic joke. Instead it turns out Rouber's head is on so backwards he can swallow Christian/Scouts of America songs whole and spit 'em out fractalized from the molecules on up. It's electric blues ballads (Beefheart? Kan Mikami?) underneath all the shock & awe I think. But it's pretty nubby. Guy must have sebaceous cysts rolling around under his knuckles.
Siltbreeze $6.50

Kouosh Yaghmaei Gole Yakh 7 inch

Kouosh Yaghmaei Gole Yakh 7 inch

7 inch 2012/1974 new Kourosh could supposedly play the santur upon first sight when he got one as a childhood gift. He started out in a teen garage band, and his two brothers were in his adult backing band (and yeah, all three of them have awesome moustaches & unibrows to match). After the Iranian revolution of the late 70s, Kourosh was forced to be involved in music only peripherally & sporadically for most of the 80s & 90s. Repro of his most famous single (also avail on the 'Back From the Brink' collection) , with it's swoopy stabs of electric guitar that arc along with the melody.
Now Again $8.00

Kourosh Yaghmaei Leila 7 inch

Kourosh Yaghmaei Leila 7 inch

7 inch 2012/1975? new Disconsolate crooning with funky fuzz, thunder sound effects & a seriously groovy prog-guitar breakdown are a couple of the highlights on the Iranian psychmaster's rarest single. Exact repro of cuts that came out not too long ago on the 'Back to the Brink' set.
Now Again $8.00

Los Rockets 10 inch

Los Rockets 10 inch

10 inch 2012/1965-68 new Sweet faced Nicaraguan teens try out several lively styles: sparkly surf, Cream/Santana slow-burners, a heavily accented version of a Peter Paul & Mary hit, & a little dash of cumbia with organ & jungle calls. They played at one of the two big colleges in Managua, and also at country clubs.

Mario Nascimbene Dick Smart 2.007 lp

lp 2002/1967 new Gadget-happy Eurospy flick that features lots of ladies' backsides. Set in South America, & the score is appropriately both bossa heavy & filled with cute whooshes of space-race echo & lounge grooves. Nascimbene may be familiar to you from his scores for the Hammer films 'When Dinosaurs Rules the Earth' & 'One Million Years BC'.

Monoshock Runnin Ape-like From the Backwards Superman cd

Monoshock Runnin Ape-like From the Backwards Superman cd

cd 2004/1989-95 new Grady Runyan says abracadabra & turns himself and his pals into a pile of wallowing, drooling slugs. Then said gastropods grow hands so they can destroy your melted head with their luddite guitar slop. Bass player Scott Derr also ran the formidably wasted & sorely missed Blackjack label. Really, nothing makes me revert to grunting & scratching my pits faster than this singles collection.

No Balls Problems That Will Solve Themselves 7 inch

7 inch 2010 new 2nd single from drummer of the ever so mighty Brainbombs. Riffs fervid with bile. Not just caveman songs, but songs by men who drag their knuckles over the same dirt again & again to form some kinda parhelic circle of mute anger. A few instances of strangled vocals way back there someplace. Hurtin' loud too.

Pandit Pran Nath Raga Cycle Palace Theatre cd

Pandit Pran Nath Raga Cycle Palace Theatre cd

cd 2006/1972 new La Monte Young & Marian Zazeela on tambouras, Terry Riley on tabla. The first evening of a 3 day festival where Nath performed different ragas at their appropriate times of the day. Nath's singing style was devotional, specifically an anachronistic version of khandar dhrupad, noted for it's slow pace & ornamented sung melodies with specific nonsense syllables. Nath was rather hermetic & not well known in India (although he did work on the radio), but once he was invited to the US by Young & Zazeela, he became a university professor & issued a few records. His students included many avant minimalists, including Young, Zazeela & Riley, Charlemagne Palestine, Henry Flynt, Jon Hassell, Don Cherry, Lee Kontiz, Jon Gibson, Yoshi Wada, & Rhys Chatham.
Sri Moonshine $15.00

Peter Brotzmann/Van Hove/Bennink Einheitsfrontlied 7 inch

Peter Brotzmann/Van Hove/Bennink Einheitsfrontlied 7 inch

7 inch 2012/1973 new Holy donuts, those guys are angry! Free jazz on a 7 inch is a pretty strange prospect. But the grizzly Brotzmann & pals solve the problem admirably by covering a pro-commie Bertolt Brecht/Hans Eisler song that was the labor movement's favorite tune during the Spanish Civil War. Lyrics translation: "Then left, two, three! Then left, two, three! Wherever your place is, there is your comrade. So fall into the worker's united front, because you are a worker." Reished for Record Store Day 2012. Fred Van Hove on piano. Han Bennink sounds like he's running a car over a trash can.
Cien Fuegos $14.00

Professor Emerson Meyers Provocative Electronics cdr

Professor Emerson Meyers Provocative Electronics cdr

cdr 2007/1970 new The Westminster Gold series is a well-known run of classical records that came out during the late 60s & early 70s on ABC Dunhill (always a laugh, as their reputation among classical collectors reamains a big fat zero). To get a few hippies buying the original longhairs, and to announce that they didn't give a shit whether fogey classical buyers gave them any clout or not, ABC hired brothers Peter & Christopher Worf to give the covers some pop-art oomph. And it mostly worked. Naked girls sell Beethoven just about as well as they sell cars, it turns out- and the photography on the whole series is really grand. Unfortunately, record collectors have long been hip to the fact that the sounds inside the eye-popping covers tend to be rather staid performances of trad. repertoire like Bach & Tchaikovsky. The few 20th century records that were issued on Westminster Gold are therefore often overlooked. But not by the gent at Creel Pone, who's found one of the greats. A synth-blorp mess by total nerds. Prof. Meyers was a real person & a genuine professor to boot, though I believe he mostly taught & played Chopin-type piano rather than patch-bay wack-off. The poor bastards at the Catholic University of America really must've thought he lost his marbles when they started hearing this stuff on the other side of the wall. Performers include Meyers, Katherine Hansel (soprano), Haig Mardirosian (organ), Frank Heintz (bassoon).

Sato Kunitaka Wandering Shadow of Southern Streets lp

Sato Kunitaka Wandering Shadow of Southern Streets lp

lp 2011/197x new Solo performances of consummate rhythmic complexity by a blind self-taught busker from the southern half of the archipelago that runs from Japan towards Taiwan. On one side he plays a 3 string cousin to both the banjo & the shamisen (sanshin). And on the other his own homemade koto, which he holds more like a stand up bass rather than laying it flat. After WWII, the local area was run by US soldiers (the battle of Okinawa was at the north end of the islands). Their slow exit from the area caused innumerable problems for the inhabitants, who were prohibited from Japanese citizenship well into the 1970s. Most of the folk singers on the islands use falsetto, but Kunitaka's voice wails across a wide range, from soft & high to low & raspy and again to beefy full-throated calls.

Sun Ra The Creator of the Universe 2cd

Sun Ra The Creator of the Universe 2cd

2cd 2007/1971 new Recently unearthed reel to reel recordings of the greatest interplanetary traveller who ever lived, live at a warehouse in San Francisco. Disc 2 is a recording of a lecture Ra gave while doing a residency at UC Berkeley. Lots of black power lyrics on disc one, backed by wailing free horns. Much like the black power speeches in the "Space is the Place" movie, this shows our pal Sunny at his most pissed off. Deranged acid casualty pacing on disc two, and that scatterbrained islamic occultitude is still slightly scary/funny even to this day. Can you imagine being stuck on a bus with this guy?

Teiji Ito King Ubu cd

Teiji Ito King Ubu cd

cd 1998/1961 new Pan ethnic improvised curlicues & fractals stitched together to make the soundtrack for a Alfred Jarry play. Fake Noh opera, lots of tooting pipes & whistles, voodoo drums, plus a few ripples of melodies like the 'Beer Barrel Polka'. Ito gives the fat bouncing cartoonish Ubu just the right amount of elegance & bravura.

Theoretical Girls cd

cd 2002/1978-81 new Prime NYC no wave at it's most guitar pounding & minimalist/maximalist. The band was also the first home to Glenn Branca, Margaret Dewys & Wharton Tiers. All the songs written by Jeffrey Lohn are on this one. They only released one 7 inch at the time, & played about 20 shows, so be very, very glad for the alternate versions & live tracks.

Thomas & Richard Frost Visualize cd

cd 2002/1969-70 new LA underling brothers Richard & Tom Martin were in the anglophilic pop-art band Powder, and after it folded they spent some time as Sonny & Cher's backup band. Here's their previously unreleased attempt at super bright bubblegum with folkpop influences & it is smackin' sugar sweet. Swank production & intricate arrangements with tympani drums, bells, acoustic guitars, & perfectly understated vocal harmonies. They put out a couple of singles on Imperial, but by the time the album was ready the label had collapsed & they quickly gave up & moved on to yucky country rock. One of the best titles on Rev Ola.

Twink Never Neverland and Think Pink Demos lp

Twink Never Neverland and Think Pink Demos lp

lp 2000/1969-70 new So fucked up on hash at the time that he immediately forgot the session ever took place, Twink rediscovered these pre-'Think Pink' jams about 15 years ago. Some heavy modern day effects like stereo separation & compression added to the sound. They don't screw it up too badly though, especially when it comes to the long moog hand slams toward the end. Twink was the Pink Fairies' drummer, but also an associate of Tomorrow, the Pretty Things, & the Deviants. Possibly the most-drugged out guy in London during the entire decade.

This group & one other on the label (called the Psycheground) were not from the UK, but headed by Italian producer Gian Piero Reverberi (Nuova Idea & Le Orme).

Various Cambodian Rocks Vol III cd

cd 2005/196x new Twisted fuzz, shakin' mini-skirt organ & whiney vocals from the phenoms of Phnom Penh's raging sixties scene. Once you try it & you'll never go back from beyond the Khmer Rouge.

Various Daisies Soundtrack cd

Various Daisies Soundtrack cd

cd 2007/1966 new This Czech new wave film was one of the most radical, as it's deliberately non-linear style was meant to evoke the frustrations of meaninglessness much like a Samuel Beckett play. It combines the dry eye of a documentary with a rich juggle of titillating images. Likewise, the twin main girls are bleedingly pubescent lesbians/prostitutes, but as director Vera Chytilova says, it's meant to "direct the spectator's attention [away] from the psychology of the characters." Same tensions apply to the soundtrack. You get dusty old Brahms records with jazzy little drum parts played over them- by typewriter keys. Wagner funeral marches are tossed up right next to happy dirty limericks sung by street urchins. Overall, it's one of the best early titles on this label.

Various Destroy That Boy More Girls With Guitars cd

cd 2009/1964-70 new Lots of little ladies followed svengalis in the major cities of the USA during the mid-60s, but they didn't all sound like polka-dot dress girlies. Many pulled on thigh-high boots & raved just tuff as their male counterparts, employing savage fuzz, clawing harmonica, scruffy blues piano, & growls galore. Producers from Jack Nitzsche to Lee Hazlewood to Sly Stone to Mike Curb to Mickie Most all tried their hand at producing a hit with an all-lady band. And a few of these fuzz femmes even played their own instruments.

Various Dirty French Psychedelics cd

cd 2009/1970-79 new Decadent, humid, drugged to the gills psychedelia from France. Electric flutes rubbing shoulders with overdub choirs & acoustic guitars, brains mottled by downers swallowed at discotheques, zapping keyboards, faux africanism, sound effects. Mostly made by studio fools trying to out-hip, out-sex, out-smoke & out-intellectualize each other. But the real story here is the music of Sekou Diabate (from Bembeya Jazz National) who shows up under lots of guises. Known as 'Diamond Fingers' he brought a wide variety of influences to his electric guitar playing: the kora of griots, hawaiian slide, and of course, Carlos Santana. Timeless music from around the globe, including ornate flamenco & tango, Peruvian folk, calypso from Trinidad, & a drop dead gorgeous choral track that appears on Yazoo's 'Music from Madagascar'. There are a few cuts that I wouldn't really call 'international' here too, like Blind Mamie Forehand (Memphis blues) Dezurik Sisters (Minnesota country harmonies), & Ernest Rodgers (whose song about Willie was the inspiration for Cab Calloway's 'Minnie the Moocher'). But when the musical quality's this high, it's just nitpicking.

Various Mortika 2lp

Various Mortika 2lp

2lp 2009/1927-5x new The mostly immigrant & entirely displaced underclass of Athens, Piraeus & Thessaloniki played songs that were a cross-cultural hodgepodge of influences from all over Asia Minor & even as far afeild as Inida, Arabia or America. Hash dens, bars, jails & gutters were always the setting & whether proclaiming the charms of drugs or the slings & sorrows of a life in poverty, pride of community was always the point of performing. Follow the trail of smoke on mini-saz, guitar, bouzouki, violin, accordion, cimbalom, & more, with tons of slow but virtuostic solos & small ensemble backdrops. Liners (which have loads of pix, lyric translations, & even a glossary) make note of the fact that many fans of the genre don't like the name 'rembetika' (and sweet jesus how they like to argue over the spelling!), because the musicians & tunes are often Turkish, Armenian, etc. rather than strictly Greek.

Various Pietre Preziose E Oro Fino lp

lp 2011/1974-2000 new Rural music from Il Mezzogiorno, (which is something of an insult inside Italy, not unlike the way a Manhattanite would refer to NASCAR). Mostly recorded in the 70s & in a wide variety of styles, the best known of which is likely tarantella. Reed flutes, 10 string mandolins, jews harps, 3-button accordions, castanets, tambourines & fellas who sing from the bottoms of their bellies.

lp 2010/1927-52 new Whether you choose to dance along with the flames or hang your head for what could be, everybody knows the world's ways are wicked. Prewar country blues that ranges from ragtime party songs meant for kicking up the dirt to timeless mournful dirges. Collectors may already have Rev. Various We Are Not Together cd

cd 2007/1968-73 new Dazzling collection of singles which all featured the involvement of the Paul McCartney-obsessed Peruvian bossa/psych masters We All Together. There's blasted out Hendrix damage & plenty of those patented sickly sweet harmony vocals. Carlos Guerrero's drop dead gorgeous sister Monica sings a Lesley Gore number. I even like the Moby Grape jammy songs by Cerro Verde (usually can't stand the style). The Lima scene was incestuous enough that you get Laghonia related tracks as a bonus. A dizzy, wonderous record.

Wimple Winch Tales From the Sinking Ship cd

cd 2009/1964-67 new Possibly the very foppiest of all UK popsike bands were this Liverpool quartet who were spawned from the ashes of the beat band Just Four Men. They only issued a few singles at the time, but here's everything the members were ever involved with: acetates, demos, unreleased stuff, before & after projects, etc. So you get them all the way from their Beatles/R&B roots right up to the utterly whimsical melodies about goldilocks & frazzled, fuzzed-out songs about the zodiac. If you ask me, the entire Rubble series rides on their shoulders.
