PARKS & ANTON NEWCOMBE, TESS: Cocaine Cat 10" (AUK 118EP) 14.00
Restocked, originally an RSD 2015 release. Clear vinyl. 2000 numbered copies. A collaboration between Tess Parks and Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) recorded in Berlin in 2014. Parks was an early signing to Alan McGee's 359 Music, on which she released her acclaimed debut, Blood Hot, in 2013. One reviewer described her as "Patti Smith on Quaaludes"; others have mentioned her "gauzy psychedelic sound" and "smouldering voice." McGee himself calls her "an amazing songwriter... her most beautiful quality is her lack of ego. Tess is an amazing lady." Her full-length collaboration with Newcombe, I Declare Nothing, will be released in 2015.

BEC 5156047

KIESLOWSKI/ZBIGNIEW PREISNER, KRZYSZTOF: Three Colors: Blue, White, Red 3CD (BEC 5156047) 20.00
Zbigniew Preisner is a self-educated Polish film score composer who first won renown for his collaborations with influential Polish director and screenwriter Krzysztof Kieslowski. As part of its reissue series focusing on Preisner's work with Kieslowski, Because Music presents a combined reissue of Preisner's scores for Kieslowski's Three Colors Trilogy, as a three-CD digipak box set. Three Colors: Blue (1993), Three Colors: White (1994), and Three Colors: Red (1994) are each loosely based on one of the three political ideals in the motto of the French Republic (liberty, equality, fraternity), and have been interpreted respectively as an anti-tragedy, an anti-comedy, and an anti-romance. The films each received universal acclaim upon their respective releases, and Preisner's score for Red won the 1995 César Award for Best Music. All three soundtracks are performed by the Sinfonia Varsovia and the Silesian Philharmonic choir, and are each available individually on vinyl (Blue (BEC 5156048), White (BEC 5156049), Red (BEC 5156050)). Blue includes pieces credited to fictional composer Van den Budenmayer; Red opens with a performance by Zbigniew Zamachowski. Zbigniew Preisner has also worked with Jean Becker (on Élisa (1995), winner of the 1996 César Award for Best Music), Thomas Vinterberg (It's All About Love (2003)), and Claude Miller (Un secret (2007)).

BEC 5156048

Zbigniew Preisner is a self-educated Polish film score composer who first won renown for his collaborations with influential Polish director and screenwriter Krzysztof Kieslowski. As part of its reissue series focusing on Preisner's work with Kieslowski, Because Music presents a reissue of Preisner's score for Kieslowski's Three Colors: Blue (1993), the first film in Kieslowski's Three Colors Trilogy (BEC 5156047), preceding White (BEC 5156049) and Red (BEC 5156050). The trilogy is themed on the French Revolutionary ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity; according to Kieslowski, the subject of Blue is liberty, specifically emotional liberty, rather than its social or political meaning. Blue stars Benoît Régent and Juliette Binoche, and received universal acclaim upon its release. Preisner's soundtrack is performed by the Sinfonia Varsovia and the Silesian Philharmonic choir, and includes pieces credited to fictional composer Van den Budenmayer. Zbigniew Preisner has also worked with Jean Becker (on Élisa (1995), winner of the 1996 César Award for Best Music), Thomas Vinterberg (It's All About Love (2003)), and Claude Miller (Un secret (2007)). White stars Zbigniew Zamachowski and Julie Delpy, and has been interpreted as an anti-comedy, in parallel with Blue (1993) as an anti-tragedy and Red (1994) an anti-romance. MIXHELL & GUI BORATTO: Animal Machine 12" (DOC 005EP) 14.00
Igor Cavalera, best known as the drummer and co-founder of Brazilian super-group Sepultura, brings his incredible percussive talents to Mixhell, his collaboration with his DJane wife Laima Leyton. The duo adds uplifting elements of rock to electronica with an organic, intuitive, and complimentary touch. Their work comes to life on this acid house collaboration with acclaimed producer Gui Boratto. When rock turned into bubblegum music, when EDM sounded too shallow, Mixhell continued their research. Let there be house, let there be techno, let there be rock -- what really matters is the music. Includes a remix by Salazar Knox.

CIPRIANI, STELVIO: La Polizia Ringrazia LP (RED 217LP) 25.50
Stelvio Cipriani's seminal soundtrack for the legendary 1972 film La polizia ringrazia (internationally released as Execution Squad and The Enforcers), directed by the great Steno, who started the "poliziottesco" genre, and starring Enrico Maria Salerno and Mariangela Melato. Italian hard-boiled vibes on Dagored! First complete vinyl reissue. Light beige vinyl. Limited edition of 500.

MORRICONE, ENNIO: Comandamenti per un Gangster LP (RED 218LP) 25.50
For this 1968 cult Italian thriller based on a script by Dario Argento, the maestro Ennio Morricone composed a dark and oppressive score, with experimental and avant-garde elements, that describes perfectly the brutality of the plot. First vinyl reissue. Lead-gray vinyl with red blood speckles. Limited edition of 500.

HEINZ, GERHARD: Schamlos LP (DIG 005LP) 29.00
Previously unreleased soundtrack to Eddy Saller's 1968 sex-and-crime film Schamlos starring Udo Kier, Rolf Eden, and Marina Paal. Featuring the music of Austrian composer legend Gerhard Heinz and previously unreleased versions of songs by psych/beat groups The Sirs and Charles Ryders Corporation. A trashy gangster thriller with provocative sex scenes, the movie is now considered a classic of the exploitation period. Musically jumping from wild jazz to pounding up-tempo beat with a hint at the new psychedelic scene of the time. An essential soundtrack put together from Gerhard Heinz's original master tapes. Complete with 16-page LP-sized booklet containing liner notes in German and English.

Grad_U follows his remix of STL on Dubs Etched Into Relief (ECHO 063EP, 2015) with his first EP for Echocord. Three powerful dub-techno tracks perfect for the dancefloor. Born and raised near Vilnius, Lithuania, Grad_U started DJing in early '97, at the age of 13, focusing on wide spectrum of sounds, including house, techno, drum 'n' bass, and jungle, and started creating his own tracks around '99. In early 2005 he initiated the Grad_U project, focusing on the deep side of techno. He has since released on various labels and in 2012 he launched his own imprints, Redscale and Greyscale.

DJ VAS: Re-Edits & More Vol. 5 12" (EDR 025EP) 12.50
DJ Vas is back with another killer volume of his Re-Edits & More series. DJ Vas is primarily known as a member of pioneering '90s French house band Kojak; for this specific project, he practices the very special game of soul-funk and disco edits. Following the success of his prior efforts (EDR 017EP, EDR 018EP, EDR 022EP, EDR 024EP), he delivers the fifth volume: four tremendous reworks, finely cut and re-produced, and filled with his classic French touch twist. His production is a brilliant mix of fine techniques, deep respect for the originals, and real personality. Contagious, warm, always sharp.

DAWN OF MIDI: Dysnomia (Clear Vinyl) 2LP (ERATP 068LTD-LP) 27.50
Clear vinyl double LP version. Includes download code. Limited to 500 copies. Channeled madness -- the sound Dawn of Midi spent years shaping culminates in their most mesmerizing work yet. With Dysnomia, the Brooklyn-based group abandons improvisation in favor of composition, utilizing sophisticated rhythmic structures from North- and West-African folk traditions to weave a sonic tapestry of trance-inducing grooves. "We didn't want to create anything cerebral," says pianist Amino Belyamani, "we wanted something visceral, something that would awaken our instinctive dance impulses." The manner by which a trio of solely acoustic instruments ends up sounding like electronic music has to do with the unconventional ways the group play their instruments on Dysnomia. The record comes to life in the trio's critically acclaimed live shows, a test of endurance and trust that involves performing their hand-looped acoustic minimalism note for note, just as the compositions were recorded. Dawn of Midi's sets are as energetic and rhythmic as a seamlessly mixed DJ set, mesmerizing fans in the same way the group's favorite experimental and electronic acts have for decades. The album was recorded to two-inch tape at Waterfront Studios in Hudson, New York, a former church that was purchased and transformed into an analog recording playground by the great engineer Henry Hirsch. Rusty Santos then mixed the album to make sure it would hit as hard as the group's favorite electronic albums do in spite of being entirely acoustic. "We wanted to make a record that sounded both musically futuristic and sonically vintage," explains bassist Aakaash Israni, "and since the album never saw a proper international release, it is very exciting to see what might happen when more people are exposed to it. And to be aligned with Erased Tapes, whose enthusiasm for the music they release has done a lot for exposing unique instrumental and electronic music, makes it that much more interesting." Swiss artist Fabian Oefner created the cover image by placing paint on a spinning drill bit and firing it at a canvas, then capturing it with high-speed photography. Formed in 2007, the band happened upon their name after drummer Qasim Naqvi casually uttered the phrase in reference to the improvised music the trio was making at the time; they had no idea that years later they would make an album like Dysnomia that would make their name appear fateful.

Recorded by Richard Alderson on April 20, 1965, this set of tunes finds Sun Ra breaking ground by using synthesizers and having the Arkestra musicians double on percussion. WATERS, PATTY: College Tour LP (ESPDISK 1055LP) 24.00
2015 repress: 50th Anniversary Edition on "Esperanto-Green" colored vinyl. In the Spring of 1966, ESP was given a grant by the New York State Council on the Arts, to tour the five colleges in the state with music departments. Artists for this tour included the Sun Ra Arkestra, Burton Greene, Patty Waters, Giuseppi Logan and Ran Blake. Accompanied by an all star backup group from among the participants, Patty's performances resulted in the album, College Tour, her second recording for ESP-Disk'. The album expands upon the vocal acrobatics that were heard on her first recording, Sings. College Tour won second place for Vocal Recording in Jazz and Pop Magazine in 1970. Patty Waters is internationally recognized as one of the first major avant-garde vocalists. Her ESP-Disk' recordings cemented her reputation as a vocal innovator, and according to liner notes and public opinion, one whose influence extended beyond jazz to Yoko Ono and Diamanda Galas.

Gatefold 180-gram double LP version. Two years after the 2013 release of his first solo album, Sambadi (FVR 080CD/LP), acclaimed Brazilian composer Lucas Arruda presents his second album, SOLAR. In 2012, Fabricio di Monaco (Modo Solar) introduced Arruda's music to Favorite Recordings founder Pascal Rioux, and one year later the label released Sambadi, which received great support from many international DJs and media. SOLAR is filled with Arruda's fusion style, mixing elements from his Latin musical background with his genuine admiration for jazz, soul, and funk music. On "Melt the Night," for example, Arruda asked legendary producer Leon Ware for his help, and the resultant track is reminiscent of Ware's 1980s collaborations with Marcos Valle, which perfectly merged sophisticated Californian boogie and AOR with blazing Brazilian rhythms. They also recorded a version of Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye's classic ballad "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)" with the help of the beautiful voice of Guida de Palma (Jazzinho). For "Uma Onda," Arruda invited Alex Malheiros, bassist of the famous jazz band Azymuth, for a splendid tribute to their fusion sound and influence on the Brazilian music scene. "Agua" co-written with Arruda's longtime friend Fabricio di Monaco, is a beautiful ballad that perfectly illustrates Arruda's passion for soul music. On top of these great collaborations and a few more surprises, SOLAR also differs from its predecessor in its more elaborate production, offering an authentic and warm sound. Mostly recorded at Sala A Studio in Brazil, many drum parts were also recorded at the fully analog Ambience Studios in Finland. The mix was also done in Finland on a Neve 8108 console from 1978, using only analog technology and a Studer master tape to record the final pre-master. The result is a timeless album, which should definitely establish Lucas Arruda as one of the finest and most talented Brazilian musicians these days.

HERE TODAY: Meadow Run EP 12" (FORM 022EP) 12.00
Here Today (Engin Seyrl and Florian Schirmacher) follow releases on Philpot, Suol, Claqueur, and Buzzin' Fly Records with the Meadow Run EP, released in advance of their debut album Transitory Objects. "Meadow Run" is a powerful techno track with the duo's trademark old school sound. They recorded their drum machines on tape and reused them in the mix, which gives them a softness without losing any punch. "Crossing" introduces a moody club atmosphere with strong, shimmering vocals. You can feel the UK house influence that also defined "Good News" from Buzzin' Fly - 5 Golden Years in the Wilderness (2008).

GEORGE MAPLE: Vacant Space 12" (FCL 122EP) 14.00
Future Classic, home to the likes of Chet Faker, Jagwar Ma, and Flume, presents the debut EP from Sydney-based singer and producer George Maple. Based in London since 2013, George Maple has worked in both live and studio environments with artists including Snakehips, Flume, and Flight Facilities, and in the summer of 2014 she performed her first Australian shows, supporting Swedish outfit Little Dragon, to excellent reviews. Vacant Space features an appearance from Kilo Kish. White 180-gram vinyl; includes download code.

WEBER: Zwei 12" (HOLGER 007EP) 14.50
On his second release, Weber further expands the sounds and themes introduced on his debut, Eins (HOLGER 004LP, 2014). Zwei documents Weber's development and growing confidence as an artist. Combining influences from early krautrock, minimal music, and contemporary dance sounds, Weber shows a refreshing appetite for experimentation and free-form song structures. Given these parameters anything seems possible, from the post-techno of "Sklt" via the anti-pop of "The Bug" to the spaced-out "B1/Warten" and its ghostly dub companion "No4."

HI & SABERHAGEN: Hi & Saberhägen 12" (HUNTLEYS 019EP) 14.50
After a few follow-up releases to start 2015, Huntleys + Palmers presents its first newcomers of 2015, to keep a watchful eye on. Glasgow-based Hi & Saberhägen are off to a promising start with this ripper of a release. Four solid slammers that have been featured on Joy Orbison's Beats in Space and the label's own 2015 Boiler Room Upfront mix. You heard them here first...

DOCTEUR SATAN: Docteur Satan 12" (CLICHE 061EP) 14.50
I'm a Cliché's own Crackboy aka Krikor presents his debut EP as Docteur Satan, injecting a lethal dose of horror to the dancefloor through the lens of new beat, Belgium's own slow-burning, utterly decadent sound. "Entity" is a throbbing groove with ecstatic vowels, elegant rave stabs, and an unsettling vocal sample. "(666) 361-6794" features filtered Juno hoovers and a pounding drum machine groove. For their remix of "Entity," Israeli duo Red Axes take the rhythmic elements up a notch. "The Operator" clocks around 100BPM, built on thumping drums and candid hooks -- perfect for all your satanic ritual dancefloor needs.

DJ CAM: Miami Vice CD (MIAMI 001CD) 17.00
Music is nothing if it can't help you bring your dreams to life, and here DJ Cam makes one of his biggest dreams come true: composing a soundtrack to Miami Vice. Cam's Miami Vice is 14 visual tracks, an imaginary score that positions itself as the "official" soundtrack just as Hollywood is preparing to film a reboot, following the first movie adaptation in 2005 by the series' original producer -- and now cult director -- Michael Mann. "My album is definitely a proposition for them! When I was living in Los Angeles, I met a guy who worked with Michael Mann and he encouraged me to do the project. He understood that it was homage from a real fan." Although strictly unofficial and a pure product of his cinematic mind, this original soundtrack is intrinsically linked to the legendary series, as a feature-length album and a collection of cinematic sequences. Inspired by the seemingly idyllic combination of sun, palm trees, and gleaming automobiles, the cinematic atmosphere of the Miami Vice TV series put stars in the eyes of DJ Cam when he was young. "It was easily my favorite TV series. I loved the long-distance shots of the city, the dynamic car chases... Introspection and psychology were very much a part of it too, unlike most American series of the era, and even back then I realized that a lot of care had been taken with the music." The beatmaker has sequenced his tracks like scenes from a script, alternating the dark atmosphere of trap music with more jazzy vibes ("Love Theme," "Tubbs Theme"). Electronic tracks are also very much present, as they were on his previous album Seven (2011). "The Chase" evokes a breathless action scene, while the footwork beats of "Move That Dope" and "Welcome to Little Haiti" reflect the intense nocturnal energy of the city. Special guest star MC Eiht (who played A-Wax in the Hughes brothers' cult movie Menace II Society (1993)) raps on "Music to Drive By" and "Street Life." He also couldn't miss paying homage (with a track featuring Earl Davis) to what is practically the Miami theme song: "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins. Here, he respectfully revisits it in deep, cerebral fashion. "You hear it everywhere, floating out of open windows... I wanted to recapture its essence without doing just a simple cover version."

JV 33570082EP

ALLEN, TONY: Film of Life Remixes 10" (JV 33570082EP) 15.50
Following his acclaimed 2014 album Film of Life, Tony Allen connects with modern club music through Film of Life Remixes. House guru Ricardo Villalobos and partner Max Loderbauer present a rework of "African Man," slowly dragging it through a groovy minimalist mutation and spreading their implacable groove over the rhythm of percussion and brass while shimmering bells interweave with a strong beat. Rising Londoner Fort Romeau reveals a new facet of "Go Back," mixing deep, graceful, elegant modern discoid rhythms with Damon Albarn's silky vocals. The piece unfolds and develops gradually, enveloping us in gentle, rhythmic house.

WOO YORK: The Valley of Songs EP 12" (LAD 020EP) 14.00
Hailing from Ukraine, the hard-working duo Woo York craft strong, emotive techno and are known for their improvisational streak when performing live. The Valley of Songs EP shows an impressive range, moving from one mood to the next while always retaining the duo's cohesive sound. From the beautiful opening salvo of "The Valley of Songs" through the forward march of "Odyssey" and the unrelenting battle cry of "Black Soul" to the triumphant finale of "Distance," Woo York cover all the bases here, taking the listener on a trip that feels complete from start to finish.

BIRKIN & SERGE GAINSBOURG, JANE: Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg (Je T'Aime... Moi Non Plus) LP (LITA 048LP) 23.00
2015 repress. "Without a doubt, Serge Gainsbourg is agent provocateur and Gallic soul brother #1. His sensual work is championed by all in the know and still resonates quite frankly in these sexually exaggerated times. Building on the North American re-introduction to the maestro's work with 1971's masterpiece concept album Histoire de Melody Nelson, Light In The Attic Records is thrilled to announce their follow-up Gainsbourg reissue, 1969's Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg (often referred to as Je T'Aime... Moi Non Plus). Recorded as a series of duets and solo performances with lover, actress, and model Birkin, the pair's chemistry-enhanced collaboration was thrust upon the record buying public to much shock and horror, but indeed found global success. The disc quickly shot its cigarette brandishing author and fresh-faced vocalist into the international spotlight; and although lead-off single 'Je T'aime' and its seductive purrs reached top slot in the UK charts, none other than the Pope branded the tune offensive and blasphemous. Ever the conversationalist, Gainsbourg wittily replied, 'we couldn't have gotten a better PR man!' Indeed Serge, indeed. Gatefold LP includes insert with detailed liner notes and English/French lyrics."

HYUN, SHIN JOONG: Beautiful Rivers And Mountains 2LP (LITA 065LP) 26.00
2015 repress. 2LP version. Subtitled: The Psychedelic Rock Sound Of South Korea's Shin Joong Hyun 1958-74. "Shin Joong Hyun's tale is personal, spiritual, and deep, not only reflecting the full spectrum of human emotions, but one that produced reverberating echoes of sound, some beautiful and life-giving, others restless and ungovernable. For the first time outside of Korea, Shin's music will be readily available to music lovers the world over. Light In The Attic are thrilled to release Beautiful Rivers And Mountains: The Psychedelic Rock Sound Of South Korea's Shin Joong Hyun 1958-1974, a career spanning compilation of the diminutive guitarist, songwriter, producer, arranger, and talent developer. Inspired by jazz, soul, and traditional Korean music, Shin started his career in the mid-1950s, performing for US troops stationed locally after the Korean War armistice of 1953. While his English language skills were limited, the young player had no trouble communicating through his trusty electric guitar, but Shin was no mere 6-string slinger for hire, he was able to communicate something far beyond your average professional musician. Production work and extensive songwriting followed, not to mention a steady stream of electrifying performances. Gaining momentum by the moment, Shin developed popular success across South Korea molding proteges like singing duo the Pearl Sisters and folk-psych songbird Kim Jung Mi into top pop stars. From there it was hit after hit. The late 1960s rock explosion and an influx of imported music from The Beatles, Jimmy Smith, and The Jefferson Airplane all informed and inspired Mr. Shin to elevate his own craft. Even experimental trips via a crew of local hippies also took the music man to new heights despite Korean law forbidding such rebellion. Drug use was illegal and punishable as a serious offence. Park Chung-hee, then President of South Korea began to closely monitor Shin's 'subversive' activities. After refusing to write a song in praise of the political leader, the musician was labeled unpatriotic and his career was instantly snuffed-out through a series of surveillance, torture, and institutional confinement. While this was not the end of Shin's musical story, for an all-too-brief moment in Korean cultural history, Shin Joong Hyun and his talented accomplices laid down a trove of recordings that have slowly reverberated far from their native land. Beautiful Rivers And Mountains: The Psychedelic Rock Sound Of South Korea's Shin Joong Hyun 1958-1974 features Korean/English lyric translations, unseen pictures, beautiful graphic design, and extensive liner notes with Shin Joong Hyun."

LOUVIN BROTHERS, THE: Satan Is Real LP (LITA 073LP) 21.00
2015 repress. "Bolstered by one of the most celebrated and startlingly unique record covers ever, 1959's Satan Is Real delves into a strange netherworld of country that no longer exists. Touching on the Louvin's fire and brimstone southern Baptist upbringing, the title track's spoken recitation proclaims the existence of the devil himself. Featuring the iconic 'There's A Higher Power' and 'The Christian Life' (covered by The Byrds on Sweetheart Of The Rodeo), Satan Is Real is thought by many to be the pinnacle of the Louvin Brothers' recording career. It's certainly an album you'll never forget, finally presented once again on vinyl with the respect it deserves: original packaging, new liner notes, period photos, and immaculate audio re-master from the original tapes." Deluxe 180gm LP housed in old school tip-on gatefold jacket. Includes full color insert with period archival photos and extensive liner notes.

EMERSON, DONNIE & JOE: Dreamin' Wild LP (LITA 082LP) 19.00
2015 repress. Deluxe gatefold LP version with detailed liner notes, unseen photos, and a download card. "Pacific Northwest isolation mixed with wide-eyed ambition, a strong sense of family and the gift of music proved to be quite the combination for teenage brothers Donnie and Joe Emerson. Originally released in 1979, Dreamin' Wild is the sonic vision of the talented Emerson boys, recorded in a family built home studio in rural Washington State. Situated in the unlikely blink-and-you-missed-it town of Fruitland and far removed from the late 1970s punk movement and the larger disco boom, Donnie and Joe tilled their own musical soil, channeling bedroom pop jams, raw funk, and yacht rock. Spurred on their high school's music program, Donnie and Joe received a further push from their lifelong farmer father, who drew up a contract stating that he'd support his sons lofty ambitions with their very own recording studio as long as they focused on original material, sage advice for a man with zero experience in the music business. This rare slice of bedroom-funk gets the usual Light In The Attic treatment with newly remastered audio, detailed liner notes, and expanded original album art with loads of photos from the Emerson's collection."

HAZLEWOOD, LEE: The LHI Years: Singles, Nudes, & Backsides (1968-71) 2LP (LITA 084LP) 24.00
2015 repress; gatefold 2LP version. "With his handlebar moustache and booming baritone, Lee Hazlewood was one of the defining stars of the late '60s. Though he's perhaps best known for his work with Nancy Sinatra (including writing mega-hit 'These Boots Are Made For Walking'), Hazlewood did stunning work away from that particular glamour queen and found latter day champions in Beck, Sonic Youth, and Jarvis Cocker. Now, for Record Store Day 2012, we are kicking off our excavation of the Lee Hazlewood archives with this anthology, Singles, Nudes & Backsides, collecting the best of Lee's solo songs and duets from his LHI (Lee Hazlewood Industries) imprint. As a true legend of the great American songbook and a rebellious pioneer who left behind a lengthy trail of echo laden pop masterpieces, Lee's influence continues to reverberate today. Between 1968-71, Hazlewood not only released his finest solo work, but produced numerous artists on LHI. From acid-folk and country-rock to pop-psych and soul, LHI issued dozens of long forgotten 45s and LPs. This series will include material from LHI (re-mastered for the first time from the original analog tapes), along with Lee's output for other labels, rarities, unreleased gems, and the films of Torbjörn Axelman. See the sleeve: surrounded by nude girls, each wearing a fake moustache, Hazlewood wears a suit, ever-so-slightly awkwardly playing the role of the '60s playboy. Just like the picture, the songs present a man conflicted; he's the tender-hearted romantic, the broken-hearted loser and the rugged cowboy, all in one. It's there in the western swing of 'Califia (Stone Rider)', the loneliness of 'The Bed' and the bleak beauty of 'If It's Monday Morning.' Hazlewood's tremulous voice was made for duets (indeed, he wrote 'Some Velvet Morning', one of the greatest of all time); here, Suzi Jane Hokom, Ann-Margret and Nina Lizell play counterpart to his manly tones. In the wonderful liner notes, written by British journalist Wyndham Wallace, the writer describes his friend Hazlewood as 'a curmudgeonly, unpredictable sort at the best of times, as impatient with his own talent as he is with other people.' The Hazlewood Wallace knew was puzzled by the growing interest in him in the last two decades of his life, which was ended by cancer at age 78."

ERICKSON, ROKY: The Evil One 2LP (LITA 097LP) 26.00
2015 repress. "2LP housed in deluxe gatefold 'tip-on' jacket with 20 page booklet, download card for full album, and etching by artist Travis Millard on side D. Originally released in the UK as the 10 song album Five Symbols in 1980 and as The Evil One in 1981 (with 5 songs replaced), this definitive LP gathers all 15 songs from the Stu Cook (Creedence Clearwater Revival) late 1977-79 produced sessions. Released from the institution in 1974, Roky found his legend had grown while he'd been away -- not least because 'You're Gonna Miss Me' was included on 1972's Nuggets compilation. He formed a band, the Aliens, and set about honing a hard rock sound that placed the psychedelic garage blues of the Elevators firmly in the last decade. Though it was produced at a time when Roky was struggling to cope with drugs and life on the outside, he hit form on his first post Elevators album-proper, 1981's The Evil One. Produced over a period of two years by Stu Cook, from Creedence Clearwater Revival, it's a masterful collection of songs about zombies, demons, vampires and, yes, even the 'Creature with the Atom Brain.' These tracks, inspired by schlock sci-fi and horror movies and colored by Roky's distinctive, high-pitched vocal and squealing guitar, are among the maverick performer's best...the B-movie demons he exorcised on this record gave us one of hard rock's strangest, most inventive albums."

YOUNGE PRESENTS VENICE DAWN, ADRIAN: Something About April LP (LL 012LP) 21.00
"In the four years since Adrian Younge's Something About April album first appeared, the Los Angeles-based producer and multi-instrumentalist has become his own musical cottage industry. Not only has he collaborated with musical legends ranging from The Delfonics to Ghostface Killah, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and The Souls of Mischief; his work has also been sampled by such rap giants as 50 Cent, Jay-Z and Common. In an equally impressive twist, DJ Premier produced an entire album with Younge's work as his only source material (including multiple samples from April, of course): 2014's PRhyme, with MC Royce Da 5'9". Something About April is an album that flaunts all of the trademarks that have made Younge an in-demand name as a composer and sample source-point. His work oozes raw, analog soul and the primal sonic edge of psychedelic rock, sitting nicely alongside Ennio Morricone's best soundtrack work, Pink Floyd's early catalog, and Parliament's Osmium. Younge's songwriting is what truly makes this album unique and keeps ears engaged. While many of his tunes are initially vamp-driven, there are changes and aural twists that lurk around every corner."

FREY, BENEDIKT: Reframe 12" (PLAYRJC 037EP) 14.00
"Dear madam, dear sir: Reframe by Benedikt Frey. 'SH Birds' opens the record with waves of hypnotizing synth-sounds, a weird vocal-sample, and an analog-driven beat. 'Signals' has a terribly wonderful build-up, and only uses carefully chosen soundscapes. 'Mind The Gap' takes the opposite direction, with a striking bassline throughout the track and a clap as hard as a smack to the head. 'Good Night Houston' features an analog outburst of old Chicago-ish acid-vibes before losing itself in a haze of deepness. Ramona is proud to present you this piece of strange and exotic fruit -- let's relish together. Farewell, Ramona"

GRIPPER, DEREK: One Night on Earth: Music from the Strings of Mali LP (MM 106LP) 34.00
"Matsuli Music presents an album of kora interpretations that astonished John Williams into saying he thought it was 'absolutely impossible until I heard Derek Gripper do it.' When Kora maestro Toumani Diabate heard these recordings he disbelievingly asked his host and producer Lucy Duran to confirm that she had actually seen one guitarist play this music on just one guitar. Recorded at an all-night session Gripper's guitar magically conjures anew this centuries-old African musical heritage. One Night on Earth: Music from the Strings of Mali captures Gripper's extraordinary six-string interpretation of Toumani Diabate's 21-string Kora compositions. Gripper's 'guitar has found the Kora-playing spirit, he captures the magic bound up in the way it is played,' says Williams, who has invited Gripper back a second time to collaborate in 'The John Williams Series' at the Globe Theatre, London, in June 2015. For more than ten years Derek Gripper has produced some of South Africa's most extraordinary musical works, fusing the country's disparate creative traditions with styles from around the world. His music draws on European classical traditions, avant-garde Brazilian works, Malian kora works, Cape Town's folk styles such as goema and vastrap, and Indian classical music, all the while synthesising them into a style uniquely his own. Tim Panting writing in the Classical Guitar Magazine describes this as ' of the most atmospheric recordings of guitar music, of any kind, that I have heard.' And in music journalist Richard Haslop's words 'Anybody wondering why one would want to hear a South African guitarist play this music when the incomparable original recordings are available, need only listen to this album.' Originally only available on CD, Matsuli Music is proud to be releasing this breakthrough album on heavyweight vinyl in a deluxe limited edition with accompanying sleeve-notes from Derek Gripper."

WATT & ROBERT WYATT, BEN: Summer Into Winter/North Marine Drive LP (MIR 100742LP) 23.00
Everything But the Girl band member Ben Watt was strongly influenced in his first steps by mentor Robert Wyatt. This LP starts with Summer Into Winter, the legendary 1982 EP written and performed together by the duo of Watt and Wyatt, and continues with the English folk milestone North Marine Drive, originally released in 1983. Including a rare gem cover of Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go," this album is a must for all fans of Nick Drake. Pressed on virgin white vinyl; limited numbered edition of 500.

COHEN, CHARLES: Brother I Prove You Wrong 2LP (DOSER 026LP) 23.50
Composer, improviser, and Buchla Music Easel master Charles Cohen returns to Morphine with a suite of material recorded in 2014. In keeping with the timbre spectrum of his semi-modular system, Brother I Prove You Wrong is built around pointillist analog tones -- Cohen's cosmic "beeps and boops" -- that swarm and scatter in mesmeric patterns across four sides. Moving through surrealistic textural overlays and industrial miasma, the album's nine tracks reveal a more introspective and personal side of the artist, following a retrospective LP trilogy released via Morphine in 2013 (The Middle Distance (DOSER 019LP), Group Motion (DOSER 020LP), Music for Dance and Theater (DOSER 021LP)). Those assembled works, dating back to the late '70s, quickly became essential listening and brought Cohen -- at the time largely unknown outside Philadelphia's experimental circuit -- to critical renown. Brother I Prove You Wrong was recorded in Berlin in September 2014 using the Buchla Music Easel, with production help and support from Rabih Beaini. Mastered by Neel and curated and designed by Tank Boys; cover art by Nathalie du Pasquier.

STUDIO SARDENA: Studio Sardena LP (NP 014LP) 25.00
Restocked, last copies. DJ Sardena is a major player in the current electro-shaabi wave that has taken over Egypt in the past few years. Better known locally as mahragan, electro-shaabi is characterized by heavy auto-tuned loud vocals and beats featuring synthesizers and various electronic effects. Studio Sardena, located in the Matariya disctrict of Cairo, is home to a number of singers and produces dozens of tracks every month. This LP compiles five tracks representing Sardena's very special, stripped-down and minimal mahragan style, featuring an array of major MCs such as Salsa El-Ageeb and Halabessa. Limited to 500 copies pressed on green vinyl.

MARKS, RICHARD: Never Satisfied - The Complete Works: 1968-1983 2LP (NA 5116LP) 25.00
"2-LP with a 20 page booklet with full annotation, extensive liner notes and essays and never-before-published photos. Download card included. Seven years in the making, Never Satisfied is our collection of legendary soul and funk singles by Atlanta guitarist/singer/songwriter Richard Marks. This 21-track anthology follows Marks's stylistic development, from his earliest work for the legendary Tuska label, from 1968 until approximately 1972, through his more mature releases on the Shout label and smaller regional labels like Note, Free Spirit, and RSC. It also includes two tracks never released in any form, found on reels Marks had maintained in his Atlanta home. Marks's story is that of an unsung soul and funk hero; a guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter whose number was in Al Green's, Barry White's, and Eddie Kendricks's rolodexes, but whose talents have only been heard in sporadic bursts since his 45s were released and disappeared into Atlanta's urban expanse. This is the story of a father and husband who managed to keep his family together as he gigged the third shift six nights a week. The story of a man who wished for more and whose talent is overdue for reassessment. He and his music are unknown to the majority, but to an obsessive minority, he is a lightning rod, that singular point at which numerous Southern soul and funk musicians converged and exploded, spreading wondrous music in all directions. Marks's impeccable run of 7" singles, released largely on tiny, local labels, are the stuff of legend, and are hen's-teeth-rare. Marks died of cancer in May of 2006, never having issued an album, either in the '60s and '70s, when many of his peers were able to find a way to issue an LP, or in anthology form in his later years. He never granted an interview. Given the caliber of his recordings and the near-complete lack of information available about him before the issue of this anthology, Marks stands out as the most mysterious talent to originate from Atlanta, a city that birthed no shortage of genius, from acclaimed worldwide (the Mighty Hannibal), obscure yet celebrated (Lee Moses), and local, but well documented (Tommy Stewart)."

AMANAZ: Africa 2LP (NA 5123LP) 30.00
Repressed, originally an RSD 2015 release. "Issued in 1975, this is the articulation of Zambia's Zamrock ethos. While other albums -- Rikki Ililonga's Zambia, Witch's Lazy Bones!! -- are competitors, it's hard to best this album as it covers each major quadrant of the Zamrock whole: it came from the mines; its musicians were anti-colonial freedom fighters, it envelops Zambian folk music traditions, and it rocks -- hard. Amanaz were serious, and they made a serious stab at an album. They titled their album Africa, according to original band member Keith Kabwe, 'because of how it was shared and how its inhabitants were butchered and enslaved, its resources stolen... all the atrocities slave drivers committed. ' Thus, their 'Kale,' a blues sung in Nyanja, that traced the continent's arc from slavery to Zambia's independence closes the album. Kabwe and rhythm guitarist John Kanyepa have a winsome softness to their vocals, which sit politely aside the feral growl of drummer Watson Baldwin Lungu, bassist Jerry Mausala and bandleader/lead guitarist Isaac Mpofu. Africa's vibe ranges from anxious ('Amanaz') to escapist ('Easy Street') to straight-up pissed-off. On the 'History of Man,' his voice whiskey-burned, his distorted guitar buzzing like swarming hornets, Mpofu indicts his species. There's a darkness to Africa not found on any other Zamrock records, and a melancholy drifts throughout, specifically on Mpofu's more restrained 'Khala My Friend,' which stands as an effective, bleak situation for the Zambian everyman, the average citizen of a struggling, new nation, who might have had relatives in conflict-torn countries on the horizon, who might have been struggling to find his next meal, who might have seen a bleaker future than his president promised. Then there's the clear Velvet Underground-influence on the nostalgic 'Sunday Morning,' which, as Kabwe recalls, was the first song written for the album, back in 1968, when Velvet Undergound and Nico was a new release -- and the underground funk of 'Making the Scene.' The album also tackles traditional Zambian music and early-'60s rock -- punctuated, of course by Kanyepa's wah-wah and Mpofu's fuzz guitars. But every time Amanaz get too deep, too violent, they come back with an accessible song and woo their listener back to the groove. 'Green Apple' is a civil song, featuring Kanyepa's sighing guitar. It is a perfectly arranged album, from the dichotomy of Mpofu's and Kanyepa's lead and rhythm guitars, to the vocal harmonies, to the rhythm section's sense of space and time, which allows Africa's funk to build. Inexplicably, Africa was given two separate mixes and two separate presses: one version is dry, with the vocals and drums mixed loud, the other slathered in reverb, with the vocals and drums disappearing into the mix, and with the guitar solos mixed much louder. We've presented them both here as they each have their appeal: it's up to the listener to pick the one he or she prefers. This is a highpoint of the Zamrock scene and we hope that this can be seen as its definitive reissue."

SEX JUDAS: Optimo Disco Plate 4 EP 12" (OMD 004EP) 14.00
Sex Judas delivers the fourth Disco Plate, a golden slice of deep modern disco following a trilogy of EPs on Tim Paris's Marketing Music. "Musically it's all over the place, but the essence of jamming and the love for African American music shines thru. Inspiration is taken from German psychedelic rock, deep southern disco, rhythm and blues, classic house and techno, also taking a key from the avant-garde. And look, you even get Rob and Ricky's acid rerub thrown in for good measure. This 12" comes with a special 12 x 12 printed insert." --Sex Judas

SEVERED HEADS: Big Saints Reward (1988-1990 Dubs) 12" (OT 015EP) 12.50
"For some it might be Kraftwerk, but for me, my favourite electronic pioneers are probably Australia's Severed Heads. They had several big club hits, the dub versions of which crossed over into the nascent house scene. 'Greater Reward (Dub)' (1988) has possibly the most beautiful piano in the history of dance music... I've slightly rearranged it for DJ use but haven't added anything. Side A includes the majestic original. 'Big Car (Crash Dub)' (1991) had possibly the heaviest kick drum I'd ever heard... 'All Saints Day (Saints Day Dub)' (1989) features future-looking sound design and hypno bass." --JD Twitch

VA: Berghain 07 - Part I 12" (OSTGUT 086EP) 12.50
Ostgut Ton's Berghain series returns with this 12" and Part II (OSTGUT 087EP), taken from the Berghain 07 mix by Function, who describes this 12": "'Odyssey #1' [by Steve Bicknell] is a four minute slab of proper dancefloor hypnotica... ['So Much' by L.B. Dub Corp is] a modern, elegant take on Deep House and Acid House... Post Scriptum is an upcoming project by an immense new talent... 'Human Timescales' is the precursor to that album [Post Scriptum 01 (INF 001CD/020LP)] and the debut of the Post Scriptum project... the floating synths give ['Parallels' by UK producer Blue Hour] a timeless feel."

VA: Berghain 07 - Part II 12" (OSTGUT 087EP) 12.50
Ostgut Ton's Berghain series returns with this 12" and Part I (OSTGUT 086EP), taken from the Berghain 07 mix by Function, who describes 12" opener "Oxide" by Cassegrain & Tin Man as "a classic Acid track with a modernist feel." "Sca Fell" by British producer Inland (aka Ed Davenport) is a melodic, almost joyful, uplifting piece of music. Fellow American DJ and producer DVS1 delivers the subtle yet muscular drive and the warm synth stabs of "Electric." Function describes Steve Bicknell's "Odyssey #2" as "a four minute slab of pure, relentless dancefloor electronics... the essence of proper, stark, underground Techno."

BOGOMOLOV, MIKHAIL: Northern Route 12" (PROTEZ 038EP) 14.50
Stunning debut from Mikhail Bogomolov on Pro-Tez Records. Straightforward, multi-layered, analog machine funk with a Motor City flare out of Moscow. Northern Route is an intriguing piece of music that sounds futuristic and vintage at the same time. Heavyweight 180-gram vinyl-only release. Mastered at Dublates & Mastering and cut at Scape in Berlin.

DARKEL: The Man of Sorrow LP (PROTOTYP 003LP) 15.50
Pressed on 180-gram vinyl. Darkel is the solo project of Jean-Benoît Dunckel, half of the French duo AIR with Nicolas Godin. His self-titled solo debut as Darkel was released in 2006, at the same time as Charlotte Gainsbourg's album 5:55 (BEC 5161976), which Dunckel and Godin produced. As well as participating in mythical soundtracks with AIR (The Virgin Suicides (1999), Lost in Translation (2003), Marie Antoinette (2006), Quartier Lointain (2010), Pioneer (2013)...), Dunckel composed the scores for Bee (2011), Je m'appelle Hmmm... (2013), and Cyprien (2009), always with an organic electronic spirit. His soundtrack for Alanté Kavaïté's 2015 film The Summer of Sangaile will be released in 2015.

TAMBIEN & TIAGO: EP 01 12" (PPINZA 001EP) 15.50
Tambien and Tiago swapped musical material back and forth to create the two tracks featured here, with more lined up for the future. A short track summary you may or may not find useful: on side A, a hip-hop flavored percussion whirlwind that was made for the DJ bag of Norman Cook. Flip to discover a techno track with heavy bass that builds slowly, always teasing, before erupting in the second half.

VA: Rhythm Trainx Vol 1 12" (RBB 003EP) 15.50
In a time before CDJ loop buttons and stone-cold arrangement techniques, bonus beats and beat records were a vital tool for aspiring, working, and tone-deaf DJs. The third release in an unofficial beat-tracks sublabel (see Redshape (RBB 001EP) and Todd Osborn (RBB 002EP) for further reference), Rhythm Trainx Vol 1 tries to breathe new life into that lost craft with an all-star cast: Manuel Tur, I:Cube, Blank Spanner, Disco Nihilist, Âme, and Radio Slave. All in different BPM, varying styles, and (un)fortunately a bit more than simple kick-drum-hi-hat patterns. Built to last.

REASON Y, THE: Hide & Seek EP 12" (SNDST 008EP) 12.00
"Creativity, craziness and Techno infused by pure genius are some of the key components of the duo 'The Reason Y'" --Resident Advisor. Andreas Quiring and Frederik Laaser aka The Reason Y, mainstays in the Berlin scene, present their stunning debut EP. "Hide & Seek" is a game in the dark depths, chasing a flickering light. "Sumatra" is a ride through the rain-soaked jungle, with drops of liquid bouncing off your skin in an orchestra of organic enlightenment. "SXF" reveals a slowly-retreating gem amidst the backdrop of infinite space, leaving only the warm ambience of new journeys.

CHICALOYOH: Les Septs Salons LP (SHELTER 059LP) 18.00
"It was a voluptuous scene, that masquerade. But first let me tell of the rooms in which it was held. There were seven --an imperial suite" (Poe, 1842). Alice Dourlen, who performs as Chicaloyoh, follows her 2013 debut LP, Folie Sacré (SHELTER 030LP), with Les Septs Salons, a condensed document of an 18-month non-stop globetrotting tour. Melding experimental and Eastern sounds with a strong theatrical aesthetic, Les Sept Salons is also the recording of a smooth transition between two languages, as Dourlen returns to French, her native tongue, on half of the record. Contemporary bridges are built here between psychedelic sounds and horror movie soundtracks, between some modern incarnations of Nico and Catherine Ribeiro. Built in two very distinctive parts, Les Sept Salons was recorded in summer 2014 in Dourlen's very own by-the-sea recording studio Chaudelande (Normandy). The first track, "The Sound of his Tenderness," recalls some of the deepest moments of women-in-horror, such as The Cremator (1969) or The Third Part of the Night (1971). Chicaloyoh's driven herself to a new galaxy of vocal explorations for a ten-minute opening track, and "The Sound of his Tenderness" is for sure the most epic and complex piece of music she's ever composed. "Jeune Fille" and "Prosternation Intérieure" -- the second and final movements, respectively -- form a twofold song. Their long-awaited lyrics in French, in the realm of French poet Joë Bousquet or painter Balthus, arrive alongside a new way of recording. Using the text as a crucial starting point in the composition process, Chicaloyoh finds a new world to dig in, of which this diptych sounds like a very promising first hint. The votive offering on the cover, a beautiful answer to Chicaloyoh's music, was made by the Paris-based photographer Camille Vivier, featuring one of her unique female forms in wax. Clocking in at just under 20 minutes, Les Septs Salons is the beautiful echo chamber from a timeless and very unique musician. One-sided LP pressed on 160-gram white vinyl and presented in PVC sleeve with PVC printed insert. Mastered by James Plotkin. Edition of 500 copies.

TUNGKYSS: Yuma EP 12" (SOLKYSS 003EP) 14.00
Solkyss is back! After a much-needed hibernation it's time to present a newborn baby of the family! French kiss or Tungkyss is more than a snuggle -- it's a musical collaboration with a common love for warm analog machines, late night jam sessions, and a playful approach to life. Yuma EP is the result of all of the above -- a straightforward collection of up-tempo tracks. The title-track comes with a perfectly crafted remix from Spain's uncrowned king Pablo Bolivar.

SR 396LP

OISEAUX-TEMPETE: Ütopiya? 2LP (SR 396LP) 23.50
Gatefold double LP version; pressed on marbled vinyl; includes download code. Ütopiya? not only continues Oiseaux-Tempête's first album (SR 381CD/LP); it also extends it. The travels move this time to Istanbul and Sicily, providing the food for its urgent energy and indomitable drive. While the structures still hint at moments of post-rock, they go further now, almost into the area of free-jazz yet without losing a directness rooted in punk (highlighted perhaps by the presence of G.W. Sok from The Ex). In addition, the bass clarinet of Gareth Davis references both the roughest of experiments of Akosh Szelevényi and The Stooges' Fun House. There are, so the story goes, sea birds that reveal themselves only at times of approaching storms. This story though, is a little more complicated. For some, the pipers riding the deluge, yet for the mariner the prophets in the lingering final moments of calm. Ultimately, are they the creator or created if the existence of one requires the other? It is this Mediterranean Sea that Oiseaux-Tempête chose to roam. More or less anchored in Paris, Oiseaux-Tempête is the result of the meeting between Frédéric D. Oberland and Stéphane Pigneul (members of both Farewell Poetry and Le Réveil Des Tropiques) and Ben McConnell (Beach House, Marissa Nadler). For Ütopiya?, the group is expanded with the addition of bass clarinet virtuoso Gareth Davis.

VON SEIN, TILL: Precious LP+CD (SUOL 006LP) 21.00
How did the myth surrounding the proverbial "difficult second album" come about? And who first started the rumor that you have a lifetime to finish the first album, but two years at most for the second? It's likely that all these platitudes simply got churned out of the cliché machine at some stage, but the fact remains: they are out there and they sometimes make life tough for musicians. But not for Till von Sein. The German DJ and producer simply approached the dictatorship of the schedule with a shoulder shrug; stress rolled off him like water off a duck's back, and he follows up his 2011 full-length debut, #LTD (SUOL 003CD), with Precious. But isn't Tilly the guy whose tour schedules barely leaves any corner of the earth untouched? That's right. In reality, the years between #LTD and Precious were compressed into a time frame during which other artists on the scene manage to put out a few EPs and remixes at most. More importantly, von Sein's Precious is not merely a follow-up: von Sein has re-calibrated himself and re-assessed his approach to creating an album. He sums up his approach to recording this release with unambiguous brevity: "I wanted the album to get to the point." While its predecessor could be described as performing a loyal service to the functional aspects of house, the tracks on this album dance to the ever-changing tune of their author. Precious effortlessly does its name justice, forming a collection of interpretations of all the musical treasures that have left the deepest impression on von Sein as an artist. The album shifts between house, R'n'B, and soul-inflected pop, stylishly connecting the most remote bpms and succeeding where many others have failed in combining dancefloor compatibility with a touch of songwriter inspiration and even airplayability. Features appearances from Kid Enigma, Russoul, The Black 80s, Diamond Setter & Maria Leonard, Mr. V, and Meggy. Only available in LP+CD format.

SNIPES, JONATHAN: Starry Eyes LP (WAXWORK 009LP) 31.00
"180 gram Metallic Gold Vinyl. Heavyweight old-style tip on jacket with thick film laminate gloss. Waxwork Records proudly presents the debut LP release of 2014's Starry Eyes. Composed by Sub-Pop recording artist Jonathan Snipes (clipping, Room 237), Starry Eyes has been hailed not only as one of the best horror movies of 2014, but one of the best horror films of the last decade. The LP features an incredible 100% analog synth score composed and performed by Snipes that has grabbed the attention of fans of the film worldwide. Starry Eyes and it's score has received countless awards and accolades. Time has called the film one of the ten best films of South by Southwest."
