VA Sounds of Silence LP
2017 repress. Sounds of Silence is an anthology of some of the most intriguing silent tracks in recording history and includes rare works, among others, by Andy Warhol, John Lennon, Maurice Lemaitre, Sly & The Family Stone, Robert Wyatt, John Denver, Whitehouse, Orbital, Crass, Ciccone Youth, Afrika Bambaataa and of course, Yves Klein. In their own quiet way, these silences speak volumes: they are performative, political, critical, abstract, poetic, cynical, technical, absurd. They can be intended as a memorial or a joke, a special offer, or something entirely undefined. The carefully-chosen silences of this anthology are intrinsically linked to the medium of reproduction itself and reveal its nude materiality. They expose their medium in all its facets and imperfections, including the effect of time and wear. At the most basic level, these silences are surfaces. And it is in their materiality that they distinguish themselves from the conceptual experiments of John Cage with "4'33". Since the 1950s, silence has found a place in the economic structure of the record industry and since then it would increasingly be appropriated by a vast array of artists in a vast array of contexts. Indeed, the silent tracks seem to know no boundaries. The LP presents the silences as they were originally recorded, preserving any imperfection that the hardware conferred upon the enterprise, without banning the possibility of being satisfying to the ear. The liner notes provide historical background for each track, revealing the stated (or presumed) motivations for these silences, while providing novel sound correspondences or interferences. This album is meant to be played loud (or not), at any time, in any place: a true aural experience. Only a few hundred copies available for distribution, in a gatefold iconic sleeve.

First up is Le Fusion. Originally released on Cajual Records in 1995, Le Fusion pairs Gemini's signature edgy techno tinged house bump with live instrumentation and frantic vocals over three untitled tracks in one of his most interesting releases. This release has been licensed directly from the man himself.

CASSEGRAIN ARCS-03 12"
Arcing Seas is back with an EP of selected tracks from the first two releases, remixed by The Mover, Peder Mannerfelt, and Shifted. Rave and techno legend The Mover turns "Trappist" into a hard-hitting electro workout using original parts that explode and punish the senses. Peder Mannerfelt offers his take on "Skull Gun". Broken beats and exciting percussion sit atop deep kicks, disorientating quick fire samples, and rapid snares. Finally, Shifted is called into action with a signature deep-sonic soundscape. Rumbling kicks and high frequency textures occupy the sound field, alongside reverberating samples from "Vultures".

COMELADE, PASCAL Le Rocanrolorama Abrege 2LP+CD
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Includes CD. Le Rocanrolorama Abrégé is a clear perspective on Pascal Comelade's musical universe; it can be considered an ultimate "best of" and a radical introduction to this chaotic and uncompromising instrumental music. Rocanrolorama Abrégé (abbreviated "rockandrolorama", in English) is the short version of the complete works and reworks of Pascal Comelade, published at the end of 2016 as a six-CD box set, in a limited edition of 1000, numbered and signed copies (BEC 5156515). Pascal Comelade made this album as if it was a new and separate album, with tracks that he considers to best represent his work, from 1993 to 2016, according to the principle applied with the Rocanrolorama box set: songs in their original form, alternative versions, reworks, additions. Le Rocanrolorama Abrégé was conceived with the double LP format in mind: four sides with six tracks each, which you can listen to in the right order, from start to finish, according to a logical, thought-out progression for each side (slow tempo, medium tempo, orchestrations, electricity, etc.), paying tribute to the concept behind the collection rhythm and blues formidable.

EL MICHELS AFFAIR Return To The 37th Chamber CD
"The wait is over, Return To The 37th Chamber is El Michels Affair's highly anticipated follow up to 2009's underground cult classic Enter the 37th Chamber. Churning out classic records since then for the likes of Lee Fields, The Arcs, The Shacks, and tons more, it is clear that EMA's signature sound is stronger & sharper than ever. This time, in addition to re-interpreting the Wu compositions for a live band, EMA pays homage to the production and sonic fog that makes a RZA beat so recognizable. Producer and bandleader Leon Michels recorded the album completely analog, sometimes hitting 6 generations of tape before it was ready for mixing, giving the Return to The 37th Chamber its own hazy sound. Adding to the unique fidelity, the record is laced with psychedelic flourishes, 'John Carpenter' synths, heavy metal guitars, triumphant horns, and traditional Chinese instruments that make up for the lack of the Wu's superlative vocals. From start to finish it's a dark trip that walks the line between RZA's timeless hip-hop aesthetic and the cinematic soul EMA has become known for. El Michels Affair tackles some classics like '4th Chamber' and 'Wu Tang Aint Nuthin to Fuck Wit', as well as some deeper cuts like Ol Dirty Bastard's 'Snakes', Raekwon's 'Verbal Intercourse', and 'Shaolin Brew', Wu-Tang's contribution to the St. Ide's Hip Hop endorsement campaign from 1994. This time El Michels brings some of the Big Crown family along for the ride. Lee Fields handles vocal duties on 'Snakes' and is joined by Shannon Wise of The Shacks for their version of 'Tearz', which pays as much homage to the Wendy Rene sample as it does to the Wu-Tang Clan. Lady Wray makes an appearance on the cover of Method Man's hit, 'All I Need', lending her vocal prowess to what gave the Wu one of their biggest hits of all time. Interspersed throughout the record are some original interludes that are like the 'rug that ties the room together,' giving Return To The 37th Chamber a cinematic narrative that makes it a proper El Michels Affair record and not just a collection of covers. From the music to the presentation, this album is a perfect example of what can only be achieved through diversity. The end result is as much a kaleidoscope of influences and multiculturalism as the city it was recorded in. El Michels Affair is once again, 'sounding out the city' that raised them, pulling elements of art and culture from across the country and around the globe to create an album truly unique in its own right."

LUCIANI, RICCARDO A. Inchiesta Sul Mondo 2LP
Restocked, lower pricing. Cinedelic Records present a reissue of Riccardo A. Luciani's Inchiesta Sul Mondo, originally released in 1976. Inchiesta Sul Mondo is a double experimental concept album, mainly electronic, based on topical problems of the period in which it was released, the mid-70s. The two records have two different arguments: Stati D'animo ("States On Mind") and Diagnosi Ecologica ("Ecological Diagnosis"). Maestro Luciani is a well-known artist in the library music scene. His very personal style is the result of musical studies from a childhood that allowed him to achieve a diploma in composition, choral music, choral conducting and more. The avant-garde and contemporary classical approach links him to artists like Egisto Macchi. Another point of contact between the two is the label that produced this double album, Ayna, which Macchi was a partner in. The album comes in a heavy cardboard gatefold cover with an original photo of the maestro inside.

BACALOV, LUIS ENRIQUEZ L'amica LP
Restocked, lower pricing. Cinedelic Records present a reissue of Luis Enriquez Bacalov's soundtrack for L'amica, originally released in 1969. L'amica is an intriguing Alberto Lattuada film starring Lisa Gastoni (portrayed in the cover photo of the LP), Gabriele Ferzetti, Elsa Martinelli, Ray Lovelock, Jean Sorel and Frank Wolff. The music is by one of the greatest pianists, composers, conductors and arrangers in the world of soundtracks, the Argentine naturalized Italian, Luis Enríquez Bacalov. Bacalov has authored music for countless high-level films including La Seduzione (1973) Quién Sabe? (1966), Django (1966), Roma Bene (1971) and Milano Calibro 9 (1972). He also won an Oscar for The Postman (1995). The soundtrack of L'amica from the title track highlights the excellent piano technique and the jazz vein of the maestro mixed with exotic and erotic atmospheres characterized by extraordinary orchestration, harp, congas and the typical persuasive vocalism of those years (all by the great Nora Orlandi). It's followed by "Rio, Zona Sul", refined samba-jazz on a massive percussive tapestry. "'Round Nassau" offers an elegant and dreamy atmosphere in Les Baxter's style adding flute and female wordless vocals. "Swingin' Easy In Tanganyika" is another extraordinary jazzy piano and drums with flute melody sideways. The side is closed by a previously unpublished version of the theme that was not included on the original Fonit Cetra LP. The B-side rearranges the themes in a more melancholy and symphonic style without renouncing jazz as in the gem "Episodio In 3/4". The ballad "The Bitter Truth" is sung by Fiorenza Mormile in English. Recorded at Italian RCA studios with engineer Sergio Marcotulli. Includes two bonus tracks not on the original release.

CIPRIANI, STELVIO Quel Pomeriggio Maledetto LP
Restocked, lower pricing. Cinedelic Records present Stelvio Cipriani's soundtrack for Quel Pomeriggio Maledetto (1977). "A tough, funky '70s instrumental score that perfectly fits the insane violence of this seldom-seen Lee Van Cleef hitman film! Quel Pomeriggio Maledetto ('The Perfect Killer') is one of the wildest and sleaziest Euro-crime movies ever made; it ultimately was made with Lee Van Cleef as the star and featuring such sexualized violence as a female getting shot in her nether regions, a straight-razor fight with trans women and some rapes that make you feel more uneasy than do most. But no rundown of the 'stars' of this film could be complete without mentioning Stelvio Cipriani's funk score. Mind you, the '70s was already a funky decade of music, just as the Euro-crime genre was already a violent and sexual movement of cinema. But both Cipriani's score and the film pushed together to find new extremes of funkiness and raunchiness. Normally if someone hears playing '70s instrumental funk says, 'What is this? It sounds like porno music!' well, that's grounds for departing from his or her presence, perhaps not to return. It's terribly limited thinking to associate all instrumental funk from the decade with smut movies. And yet, I must confess there's a certain sleaziness (and I use that word lovingly) in Cipriani's Maledetto title track that perfectly evokes the on-screen tawdriness to come. The wah guitar. The prominent electric bass. The slithering, laid-back horns. It's an ingenious groove and yet dripping with sleaze. And even though there's a laconic mid-tempo quality to the title theme, there's also something that drives it steadily forward. And that perfectly captures the doggedness and determination of Van Cleef's hitman character, who constantly pushes forward in his quest, even after he's been betrayed by his former partner, his new criminal organization and his woman. (In fact, it was Quel Pomeriggio Maledetto that crystalized in my mind how well the Euro-crime genre worked when operating within these 'one man against the world' stories.) In any case, let all nerdy trivia questions fade away as you get lost in some magnificent, sleazy funk by maestro Cipriani. And we'll 'see you in Hell, kitten.' " --Mike Malloy, excerpts from the liner notes. Comes in a gatefold sleeve.

VA Ciao! Manhattan CD
"Edie Sedgwick was the true 'It Girl' of the Pop Art age; a woman who famously said she wanted 'to turn the world on just for a moment'. Part of Andy Warhol's Factory for a year in the mid-'60s, she is widely believed to have inspired The Velvet Underground's 'Femme Fatale' as well as Bob Dylan's 'Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat' and 'Just Like A Woman'. 1973's Ciao! Manhattan, the model and actor's final film, gave some indication of why she inspired such devotion. Written and directed by Factory affiliates John Palmer and David Weisman, the movie tells a quasi-fictionalized account -- a chronicle à clef in Weisman's words -- of Sedgewick's journey from New York to Santa Barbara. In the film, Sedgwick is Susan Superstar, a New Yorker who winds up living in a drained Santa Barbara swimming pool in a narcotic daze, life and art just a hair away from each other. Shot over a five year period, Sedgwick died of a barbiturate overdose at the age of 28 before filming wrapped in 1971. For a movie starring some of rock's great muses, the soundtrack fittingly features cult figures of the era: Richie Havens ('Shouldn't All The World Be Dancing', 'To Give All Your Love Away', 'I Can't Make It Anymore'), John Phillips ('Malibu People') and Byrds/Flying Burrito Brothers member Skip Battin, who performs Kim Fowley's 'Citizen Kane'. Other artists are less well-known, including actor Kim Milford, who sings the stirring 'Justice', and Factory man Gino Piserchio, an artist and dear friend of Weisman, whose synthesizer compositions anchor the score. Never before released in any format, this long-overdue pressing includes all of the above plus selected dialogue from the film, each snippet like a beat poem in its own way. The Village Voice once called Ciao! 'The Citizen Kane of the drug generation'; deeply evocative of the era, the mood of the soundtrack captures the psychedelic spirit of the film, as well as the darkness and tragedy that characterized Edie's life."

CALE & TERRY RILEY, JOHN Church Of Anthrax LP
2017 repress. Terry Riley (piano, organ, soprano saxophone) & John Cale (bass, harpsichord, piano, guitar, viola, organ) collaborated on this one-off album, released in 1970. At this time, rock music was a serious movement, removed from the joke it once was, quite unaware of the joke it would eventually become, and things like this sometimes happened. Cale, classically trained on the viola, must have been pretty pleased to get a shot to record with the '60s king of minimalist pulse, Terry Riley. The album features 4 collaborative tracks between the two; while maybe not earth-shattering, they are quite fine for horizontal home listening pleasure at just about any hour of the day. Instrumental jams, mixing the styles of the two players pretty evenly (if you're vaguely awake, you can imagine this easily). The fifth track is a psychedelic pop masterpiece by Cale, "The Soul of Patrick Lee." Exactly why this track is included here has never been adequately explained, but it is about as beautiful as music in song form can get. 180 gram exact repro reissue.

KING KONG He Was A Friend/Try Not I 12"
2017 repress. This record follows on from the string of mid-'80s hits for Firehouse, Jammy's, Ujama and co, for which Dennis Thomas aka King Kong is most celebrated. Originally released in 1988 as a tribute to his friend Tenor Saw, killed that year in suspicious circumstances, it came as a 12" on Thomas' own Concious Music label, and as a 7" (without "Try Not I") on Jah All Mighty in New York. This is the great dancehall singer at his most powerful. Both vocals come with dubs, and the rhythm is driving, hard and sombre, with nervous, grubbing synths, ringing claps, and a lethal bass-line. Dug Out is devoted to reggae reissues, run by Mark Ainley and Mark Ernestus. Restoration done at Abbey Road Studio, mastering at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin.

DADAWAH Peace And Love LP
LP version, 2017 repress. Dark, hypnotic, tripping nyabinghi from 1974. Led by Jamaican Rastafarian singing hand-drummer Ras Michael over four extended excursions, the music is organic, sublime and expansive, grounation drums and bass-heavy (with no rhythm guitar; rather, Willie Lindo brilliantly improvising a kind of dazed blues). Lloyd Charmers and Federal Studios engineer George Raymond stayed up all night after the session to mix the recording, opening out the enraptured mood into echoing space, adding sparse, startling effects to the keyboards. At no cost to its deep spirituality, this is the closest reggae comes to psychedelia. Previously squandered in an incongruous 2-for-1 reissue, now lovingly returned to its original, singular glory at Abbey Road. Pressed on super-fly vinyl and housed in new standard-printed sleeves.

BEHRENDSEN, PETER Nachtflug / Atem des Windes LP
Peter Behrendsen (b. 1943) is a Cologne-based radio producer, performer, and composer of experimental music. He started concerning himself with electro-acoustic music in 1972. He was a member of Josef Anton Riedl's ensemble and an assistant to Klaus Schöning at the WDR radio play studio (Studio for Acoustic Art). In Cologne, he organized numerous concerts and festivals for experimental music, most notably BrückenMusik, a series of concerts in the box girder of the Deutz bridge. He regards John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Jackson Mac Low, and David Tudor as his most important teachers, with whom he also collaborated, and has performed his own live-electronic and text-sound compositions throughout Europe. This LP pairs a live-electronic and a text-sound piece: "Nachtflug" ("Night Flight", 1999) is based on electronic treatment of the sounds of bats made audible, and is performed by Hans W. Koch and Behrendsen. "Atem des Windes" ("Breath of Wind", 1999-2005) is a text-sound composition on the subject of the wind, inspired by a Taoist text by the Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi, and features the voices of Bettina Wenzel and Behrendsen. STIEBLER, ERNSTALBRECHT Kanon / Torsi LP
Ernstalbrecht Stiebler (b. 1934) is a German composer of minimalist and reductionist contemporary music. His name is still most closely associated with his long-time position as radio editor and producer for New Music at the Hessian Broadcasting Corporation (Hessischer Rundfunk), but his own compositional oeuvre -- beginning in 1955 and continuing until now -- has, in recent years, attracted more attention with various concerts and several releases. Having attended the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music from 1958 onwards, Stiebler decided in 1963 to leave serial music behind and opted instead for his own reductionist style built on minimalist structures and repetitions, though not in any way related to the so-called minimal music but rather influenced by minimalism in visual art. In terms of composers of his time, the closest stylistic relationship that could be drawn is to Morton Feldman. Stiebler's approach is best summarized in his own words: "Music is too important to burden it with emotions." This LP pairs two organ-based works: "Kanon" (1980) for organ, electric organ and wind instruments, and "Torsi" (2002) for organ in three movements: "Torso", "Organa minima", and "Cantus". The latter recording, made at St. Stephen's Church in Konstanz (organ: Hans-Peter Schulz), was previously released on CD by m=minimal (MINIMAL 017CD, 2013). "Kanon" is a previously unreleased recording. Includes an extensive interview conducted by Jens Strüver about Stiebler's compositional views and techniques. Gatefold sleeve; Edition of 300.

I-LP-O IN DUB Capital Dub Chapter 1 LP
I-LP-O In Dub is the solo project of Pan Sonic member Ilpo Väisänen. Capital Dub Chapter 1 follows the 2015 debut Communist Dub (EMEGO 203LP) - a year marked by further descent into economic crisis and instability. The usual business cycles of production/distribution/consumption, running alongside macro cycles of boom and bust, have been replaced by ossification, austerity, the machine seizing up. Ilpo's "circular riddims" complement the ebb-and-flow of the circulation of money + commodities and are mirrored by his field recordings of Barcelona rain -- the final phase of the cyclical movement of water. But of course the smooth running of "Paradise Capital" is unsustainable. Destroyed techno and open spaces contend with sinister swarming atmospheres. A cash machine flickers. Zeros and ones displace another factory. Dub as decay -- the ghostly remains of tracks eroded by time and technology. The "Invisible Hand" of the market spasms with tremors. Ferocious textural feedback as music for stock exchange crashes. The soundtrack to heaps of money hoarded by the hidden class. Capital is value in motion, but there is nowhere to go. After the collapse, picturesque ruins. Capital Dub Chapter 1 simply asks the question: what next? Influenced by the first part of Karl Marx's Capital (1867). Recorded anytime in there, rain & 808 at Pallars152, Poblenou, Barceloba; Mixed at Juniper & Stone, Kartula, Finland; Mastered at Dubplates & Mastering.

VA Sky Girl 2LP
2017 repress. Sky Girl is a mysteriously unshakeable companion, a deeply melancholic and sentimental journey through folk-pop, new wave and art music micro presses that span 1961-1991. It's a DIY collection of different genres, from different countries across different decades, that are all bound by the same longing sentiment. A concept compilation! A seemingly disparate suite of selections of forgotten fables by more or less never-knowns, Sky Girl forms a beautifully coherent and utterly sublime whole deftly compiled by French collectors DJ Sundae and Julien Dechery. From Scott Seskind's adolescent musical road movie to Karen Marks' icy Oz-wave, the charming DIY storytelling of Italian-American go-getter Joe Tossini and the ethereal slow dance themes of Parisian artists Nini Raviolette and Hugo Weris, Sky Girl resonates on a wide spectrum historically, geographically and stylistically. It unites in a singular, longing, almost intangible ambience. If the names sound wholly unfamiliar that doesn't matter, the nature of the compositions swiftly nurtures an intimacy with these lonely, poignant, openhearted wanderers. Most were available in a very limited capacity at the time of their release, some were never really released at all - Gary Davenport declined to release "Sarra" after he split with the girl for whom the track is named - years later a friend convinced Davenport to allow him to put 100 copies online to sell and DJ Sundae was quick enough to snare one. Beyond their scarcity, these tracks are bound together by a certain raw beauty that's achievable when music is made and no one is listening. Sky Girl comprises of fifteen officially licensed songs, a two year international scavenger hunt through long-folded home label operations, the depths of internet forums and traceless acetates. Both compilers are well trained record sleuths - DJ Sundae's labels Hollie and Idle Press have reissued Arthur Russell affiliate Nirosta Steel and DIY relic Pitch, while Julien Dechery previously compiled Fire Star, a retrospective on Tamil film composer Ilaiyaraaja, for Bombay Connection. Released by popular NTS show "Noise In My Head" offshoot Efficient Space, Sky Girl is enriched with artwork from Perks and Mini mutant Misha Hollenbach and appropriately elegant sleeve notes courtesy of Ivan Smagghe. Includes digital download. Also features: Linda Smith, Bruce Langhorne, The Seraphims, Some of My Best Friends Are Canadians, The Rising Storm, Warfield Spillers, Joyce Heath, Angel, Nora Guthrie and Once.

VA Highlights Of Vortex LP
"The brainchild of visual artist Jordan Belson and electronics polymath Henry Jacobs, the Vortex Experiments ran from 1957 to 1960, first at San Francisco's Morrison Planetarium and later at the SF Museum of Art. The very name of these events announced their aim: a swirling totality of sensory experience. Around Belson's richly-colored visuals -- making use of the planetarium's entire dome and featuring luminous, sharply geometric imagery projected through an array of devices -- Jacobs ringed a system of roughly 40 multidirectional loudspeakers, each of which could be precisely controlled to produce, in the words of one reviewer, 'a living theater of sound and light.' A landmark recording in the history of electronic tape music and an engrossing artifact of proto-psychedelia, Highlights Of Vortex gathers recordings designed for the Vortex system by Jacobs and collaborators David Talcott, William Loughborough, and Gordon Longfellow. Source material including free improvisation, field recording, classical Indian instrumentation, West African polyrhythms and musique concrète is transmogrified through tape manipulation, atomizing swathes of reverb and delay, and other live and recorded effects, making dramatic use of the monumental Vortex soundsystem. An unprecedented marriage of image and sound, Vortex Experiments exercised immeasurable impact on the imagination and practice of countless experimental visual and sonic artists so this album is a must for fans of such visionaries as Stan Brakhage, Tony Conrad, and Jack Smith. Limited edition of 500 numbered copies on clear vinyl."

DOCKSTADER, TOD Eight Electronic Pieces LP
"Originally self-released in 1961 and later issued by Folkways, Tod Dockstader's Eight Electronic Pieces is a foundational document of American electronic music and a stunning first work from this revolutionary composer. Refused access to the resources and funding of the academy and without any interest from the record industry, Dockstader assembled his debut album through three years of his own private labor -- recording after-hours at the New York radio station where he worked. Dockstader's approach was informed by the laboratory experiments of his European contemporaries Edgar Varèse and Pierre Schaefer as well as by the aleatory compositional techniques and neo-dadaist aesthetics of John Cage. While Dockstader famously described his music as 'organized sound,' Eight Electronic Pieces is not pure musique concrète. Oscillators pulse and clash with fragments of incidental tape music, leaving collages of sound as tuneful and memorable as they are otherworldly. A visionary debut that presages the abstract ambience of modern IDM and an essential addition to any collection of early electronic music. Limited edition of 500 numbered copies on clear vinyl."

MAMOND Paradise CD
2002 release. Roc Hunter melds creative talents with some of Rio's finest musicians on this album of laid back tropicalia, chilled-out grooves perfect for poolside lounging and heating up the dancefloor. Paradise is a merging of musical cultures, styles and production, firmly keeping its Brazilian roots alive. It celebrates the music of Rio De Janeiro, infusing electronica, samba and funk. Joe Davis and Roc Hunter conceived of Mamond and, loaded with a laptop and various other tools, flew to Rio and employed some of the finest musicians, many of which were great friends of Far Out Recordings. One key person was Ivan of Azymuth who helped co-ordinate many of the songs and arrangements for the album. All the material was laid down during intensive recording sessions in Copacabana and took almost a year to complete. This diverse album includes last year's Afro-centric hit "Que Coisa So" featuring existing members of Banda Black Rio (Rio's legendary funk group of the '70s) on horns and percussion from King Salsa (Brazil's only salsa orchestra). Many tracks feature fresh talents like the ethereal vocals of Gabriella Geluda on title the track, and Noite De Verao and Cidinho Moreira on percussion.

IPANEMAS, THE Samba Is Our Gift CD
2006 release. Far Out Recordings present The Ipanemas's latest opus, Samba Is Our Gift. Combining Afro-Brazilian-bossa grooves with classic vocal samba, Samba Is Our Gift is a step back in time to 1960s Rio de Janeiro, and as is dedicated to its namesake, samba, the national past-time of Brazil. The Ipanemas are Wilson Das Neves and Neco. Wilson is one of Brazil's most prolific drummers whilst Neco is an unassuming genius of bossa nova guitar. Wilson and Neco were instrumental in breaking bossa nova in Brazil back in the 1950s, and in the decades since then they have recorded with all the Brazilian legends including Elis Regina, Tom Jobim, Wilson Simonal, Chico Buarque and Elza Soares. Their debut album Os Ipanemas was recorded in Rio in 1964 for CBS, yet, the follow up wasn't recorded until almost 40 years later in 2001 with The Return Of The Ipanemas for Far Out Recordings. This was so popular, that a follow up Afro Bossa was recorded two years later, yet it is in Samba Is Our Gift, their third album for Far Out Recordings, where they deliver their most impressive, diverse and arresting album to date. The Afro-sambas that are the Ipanemas trademark sound are ever present, yet there are also four fine examples of samba-cancao ("sung-samba") featuring Wilson on vocals. Incredibly, Wilson only stepped out of the shadows of the drum-kit and up to the mic in 1997, yet here is a man who, at the drop of a note, can take us back to the glory days of samba-cancao. Yet, it is not only Wilson's amazing vocals that have helped take this album to the next level, but also the arrangements which sound much more confident that on previous efforts - the use of strings on tracks such as "Valsamba" and "Imperial" really do take us back to the golden days of the great Brazilian orchestras where Neco and Wilson learnt their trades. This is the tour de force of Samba Is Our Gift - its ability to invoke this sense of sixties Rio de Janeiro, of hip jazz spots and late-night jam sessions. Samba Is Our Gift sees them revisiting this wildly creative time, yet now playing this music with the musical experience of seasoned veterans. There is never likely to be a group of musicians capable of causing such a spell ever again.

DOS CAFUNDOS Capitao Coracao LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl. 2012 release. Dos Cafundos were founded 2002 in Rio de Janeiro. A dastardly loving concoction of Frank Zappa, John Zorn and Mr Bungle processed through a Burroughs-esque descent into musical madness. A post neo funk, prog-jazz, samba punk hybrid known as Dos Cafundós. Often frenetic, ever evolving, morphing through time signatures, moods and intensity Capitão Coração, the band's first full length release, represents a broadening of Far Out Recordings's sonic offerings showcasing the musical craftsmanship and diversity of Rio. Ten years percolating, distilling and honing a musical identity firmly rooted in the canon of sonic experimentation and hybridization, this album is far more than a mere collage of disparate genres competing for the listener's attention. Instead, a procession of musical movements flowing through the raw energy of ska and punk, the ferocious musicality of jazz and fusion, the cultural traditions of samba and folk, the rhythmic underpinnings of funk and metal culminates in a listening experience akin to a psychedelic opera of Brazilian proportions, a beating heart tale of the manic circadian rhythms of life. Previous dalliances down experimental avenues like Binario's funk-rock amalgam have showcased a label willing to extend beyond the boundaries of what is commonly conceived as the Far Out Recordings sound. Though often looking back over fifty years of the country's musical history, in modernity Brazil presents a diversity of musical offerings on par with that found in Capitão Coração. Produced together with Tomas Alem (son of Jamie Alem) at the legendary Musika Studios, where the label's own legacy started some 18 years ago, and mastered by Grammy award-winning Bob Katz at Digital Domain, Far Out Recordings is as pleased as Punch to unleash Dos Cafundos on the world. Dos Cafundos are: Leonardo Musse - bass, vocals and percussion; Pedro Dias Carneiro - guitar, vocals, flute and percussion; Conrado Kempers - guitar, violin, vocals and percussion; Uirá Bueno - drums, vocals and percussion.

BEAUTY ROOM, THE The Beauty Room II CD
2012 release. The Beauty Room return with their second album following on from their self-titled 2006 debut on Peacefrog Records. Recorded in LA and London, the record updates and hybridizes folk, soul, RnB and soft rock of the late-60s and early-70s. World famous techno/electronica DJ and producer Kirk Degiorgio re-unites with vocalist Jinadu on a deeply musical record channeling the likes of The Doobie Brothers, David Crosby and Brian Wilson with a fresh sound all their own. Beauty Room II was recorded at Sunset Sound - LA, British Grove - UK, Olympic Studios - UK and Studio Heuvellaan - Holland using the best session musicians including Chris Whitten (Johnny Cash, Paul McCartney, Dire Straits), Rob Harris (Jamiroquai), Brian Bromberg (Elvis Costello, Herbie Hancock) and engineered by Grammy-winning producer Peter Henderson (Supertramp, Frank Zappa). Perhaps the most exciting addition to the follow up is the incredible string arrangements of Paul Buckmaster (Elton John, David Bowie, Rolling Stones), which were recorded with the Metropole Symphony Orchestra in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Singer Jinadu and producer Kirk Degiorgio first collaborated on the As One album 21st Century Soul (Ubiquity) in 2001. Both have worked mainly in the electronic genre recording for a wide range of labels from Mo Wax to Bitches Brew and Far Out Recordings. The Beauty Room came about through continued collaboration, with Degiorgio sending Jinadu sketches with increasingly unusual progressions. Jinadu enhanced with catchy melodies, hooks and layers of rich harmonies. Combining traditional craftsmanship and modern electronics, it stands uniquely alone, there's timeless urban sophistication alongside a strong cerebral groove reminiscent of Steely Dan. What The Beauty Room achieve here is a similar blend of sharp-creased strut and spiritual meditation, all of it laced with plenty of that most essential yet indefinable alchemical element, soul. Fans of singer/songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and the West-Coast scene will revel in the down tempo eloquence. Beauty Room II is lush, romantic Rotary Connection-type psychedelic soul beautiful played, sung and produced. Warm, human and spaciously beautiful, The Beauty Room will take you on a journey past wonderfully familiar landmarks to a place you've never quite been before.

CONTE, NICOLA Natural: Nicola Conte Presents Stefania Dipierro LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl. Natural is the latest collaboration between musical travelers and kindred spirits Nicola Conte and Stefania Dipierro, the culmination of a relationship rooted in a shared belief in the spiritually healing powers of music. The Italian duo take 2016 by storm with a sensual, sumptuous and highly accomplished record, firmly anchored in the traditions of Brazilian bossa nova, samba and jazz. Nicola first achieved international acclaim for his signature style of samba-influenced acid-jazz, which also drew inspiration from '60s and '70s Italian film soundtracks. Alongside his production work Nicola, he has laid out his musical vision through his guitar playing and songwriting, with numerous studio albums including 2004's Other Directions, released on Schema, a French subsidiary of Blue Note Records. His compilation series Viagem, all five volumes of which have been released on Far Out Recordings, provide an insight into the sounds of the past that have inspired his music of today - a peerless collection of lost bossa and samba jazz from the swinging Brazilian '60s. On this new collaborative release, Conte's forward thinking production cleverly complements and contrasts with the warmth of Dipierro's laid back inflection and gloriously rich timbres. Natural is aptly named, considering the ease with which Stefania and Nicola have re-assumed the roles of muse to one another, a musical relationship providing the deepest access to the poetry within their sound. The album's title track and first single is a perfect introduction to their world, a masterful blend of global influences in which a propulsive Afro-rhythm bolstered by a searing funk guitar, whilst soothing Rhodes chords provide a distinctly Brazilian warmth and Stefania's vocals offer up an enriching melody to soothe the heart and engage the mind. Alongside original compositions from Nicola and others, Natural also tantalizingly promises some inspired re-interpretations of classic Brazilian and jazz pieces: Trio Tenura's exemplary bossa groove "A Gira" and Steve Kuhn's beautiful "The Meaning Of Love" are among the tracks respectfully imbued with an updated resonance.

NOMADE ORQUESTRA Nomade Orquestra LP
LP version. 2015 release. Nomade Orquestra came together in Sao Paolo in the year 2012, though they could just as easily have emerged fully formed into our world from a mystical land where spaced out jazz soundtracks daily life and the passing of time is rhythm and groove. Such is their elusive, ethereal yet highly accomplished and deeply funky otherness. The time is ripe for ten of the most talented and daring musicians working in Brazil today to deliver their fully formed debut. Effortlessly weaving through the disparate sounds of Brazil's diverse musical diaspora, the group describe themselves and their shared project as "the point where different musical expressions and strands meet and interact in a unique way." From funk and soul to Afro-beat, Ethio-grooves, dub and hip hop, their sound remains firmly anchored in the world of jazz while taking off to the cosmic stratosphere and incorporating electronic elements, alongside traditional Brazilian styles. In line with the bands's musical and spiritual influences, adopted from age old lineages of the global east, the album's opening track "Samurai" kicks off the psychedelic party with the strike of a gong. Dream-like synths, Marcos Mauricio's arresting piano and André Calixto's beautifully expressive tenor saxophone shed the first light on this enchanting new incarnation of global roots music. "Sonhos De Tóquio" hypnotic grooving bassline is complimented with psychedelic guitar riffs and ominous synth washes, building a sound both tranquil and unsettling. Bobby McFerrin makes an appearance in spirit on "Bedum", possibly the album's most directly expressive track. "Morning Birds", features the talents of Otis Trio's Beto Montag, who brings his deft marimba playing to the party for an Afro-beat tinged beauty that further highlights the varied and deep roots of Nomade's musical influences. "Garuda" finds Nomade Orchestra in a more contemplative, mood. Bringing together soaring Chinese flutes, Hawaiian style fuzz guitar, snake charming saxophone and some world class oud playing from guest musician Luciano Sallun, the track is a spiritual wonder and another part of a highly sensory journey that recalls the mystical jazz musings of Herbie Hancock and Pharoah Sanders while sounding like the Brazilian take on Taoism. Making music like none other in Brazil, or indeed the world, Nomade Orquestra lead the way.

Hometown was written in the depths of Russia in a place called Novocherkassk, whose industrial cityscapes made a great impact on the overall sound of the album. Most of the tracks were written in a few takes. Most notably, the track "Innermost Self" is a dedication to Module One's grandma who passed away a short time ago. Due to a tragic sequence of events, he was unable to see her before she fell into a coma. The track is overloaded with tension and fear as well as stark anxiety. "Made Of Dreams" features Soela. TOOG The Prepared Public LP
LP version. Includes download code. Following 2010's Goto (KK 053CD/057LP), Toog, aka Parisian musician, poet, and filmmaker Gilles Weinzaepflen, is back with his third album on Karaoke Kalk, The Prepared Public. Toog's musical life started by touring extensively with the legendary Scottish singer Momus, in the USA, Europe, and Japan, where they played with the Japanese popstar Kahimi Karie. Toog's debut album 6633 was released worldwide in 1999 and was critically acclaimed. BBC Choice describes 6633: "Imagine a 21st century descendant of French musical maestros Erik Satie and Serge Gainsbourg playing his compositions with chop sticks and a selection of synths and toy instruments and you have Toog." The Prepared Public is Toog's seventh full-length album as a solo musician. The album begins, as all music should, with the sound of tuning up. What ensues is 18 tracks of bewildering beauty, both enchanting and baffling. Toog paints a mysterious sound picture, blending piano melodies with field recordings, electronic sounds, acoustic guitar, and French spoken word. It is perhaps the minimalist edge that provides the only link to the John Cage reference in the album title. In Toog's own words: "John Cage has nothing to do with the record, apart from his interest in sounds. He's a symbol more than a model: his fabulous prepared piano wouldn't exist without culture, which is 'preparing' us to welcome it. We are the prepared public." With so many short tracks on one album - the average length is about two minutes - Toog manages to create the feel of a sound collage, encompassing seemingly endless emotions and abstract audio moments, each one magnificently juxtaposed with the next. The Prepared Public may be of the musique nouvelle genre, but it covers too many styles to be placed in one pigeon hole. One thing is clear: the core of the project is a true dialogue between piano melodies and sounds. This music effortlessly leaps from minimal ambience to dadaist moments which could be the soundtrack to a Tim Burton movie. The Prepared Public is as likely to perplex as it is delight, but no doubt, this is an album for the discerning listener.

BUNNY LEE Jamaican Rockers 1975-1979 LP
LP version. The Rockers Sound (aka Steppas) came from the mid '70s and was created during sessions with The Revolutionaires band at Channel 1. Drummer Sly Dunbar came up with a new "Militant" style double drumming on the snare drum that seemed to add some credence to the political/Rasta based lyrics that were so prominent around this time. So for this compilation, Kingston Sounds have pulled together some of the best cuts from this period, when producer Bunny Lee was on the top of his game and the sound in town to get on board with was "Rockers"... So sit back and enjoy another period in reggae's history that still sounds as good as when it was created way back when. Features: Cornell Campbell, Dennis Brown, Johnny Clarke, Junior Delgado, I Roy, Leroy Smart, Lloyd Chambers, Morwells, Jackie Mittoo & The Aggrovators, Horace Andy, and Ben Sherman.

ASHLEY, ROBERT Perfect Lives 2DVD
2005 release. Robert Ashley's Perfect Lives has been called "the most influential music/theater/literary work of the 1980s." At its center is the hypnotic voice of Robert Ashley. His continuous song narrates the events of the story and describes a 1980s update of the mythology of small town America. Perfect Lives is populated with myriad characters revolving around two musicians - "R", the singer of myth and legend, and his friend, Buddy, "The World's Greatest Piano Player". They have come to a small town in the Midwest to entertain at the Perfect Lives Lounge. As Robert Ashley describes in the opera synopsis, "they fall in with two locals to commit the perfect crime, a metaphor for something philosophical: in this case, to remove a sizable about of money from The Bank for one day (and one day only) and let the whole world know that it was missing." The eloping couple, Ed and Gwyn, the old people at the home, the sheriff and his wife (Will and Ida) who finally unravel the mystery, and Isolde, who watches the celebration of the changing of the light at sundown from the doorway of her mother's house, are some of the characters who journey through the seven episodes of the opera. Derived from a colloquial idiom, Perfect Lives transforms familiar material into an elaborate metaphor for the rebirth of the human soul. It has been called a comic opera about reincarnation. Personnel: Robert Ashley - solo voice; Jill Kroesen, David Van Tieghem - chorus; "Blue" Gene Tyranny - keyboards; David Van Tieghem - non-keyboard percussion; Peter Gordon - music producer; Paul Shorr - soundtrack producer. First time on DVD, digitally re-mastered. Deluxe digipak packaging.

MF DOOM Operation: Doomsday (Metal Face Cover) (Black Vinyl) 2LP
2017 repress. "Back again on vinyl where it belongs, MF DOOM's 1999 classic Operation: Doomsday is now presented on a premium grade LP, with audio re-mastered from the original Fondle'Em Records release, and a poster of the album cover art! Underneath his mysterious metal mask, MF DOOM hides the cachet underground legends are made of. After KMD (his first group)'s 1994 sophomore album Bl_ck B_st_rds was shelved by Elektra in 1994 and his blood brother Subroc (one half of the sibling rap duo) passed away, surviving front-man Zev Love X mutated into the MC Avenger known as MF DOOM and the rap world is better for it. This 19-cut deep album is ridiculously dope, in a bizarro Ol' Dirty Bastard kind of way. Doom sounds either high or drunk on most of the tracks, his self-produced beats are gritty, and his rhyme styles are almost indecipherable. On arguably the best track, 'Rhymes Like Dimes,' Doom weaves some pointed lyrics through his abstract wordplay, spitting 'only in America could you find a way to earn a healthy buck / And still keep your attitude on self-destruct.' 'Who You Think I Am?' features DOOM's crew M.onster I.sland C.zars, while on '?' he trades hot verses with former Columbia artist Kurious Jorge. Doom's avant-garde ghetto-rhyme philosophies take even more intentionally weird twists on 'Tick, Tick...' where he and guest MC MF Grimm's flows warble over a rhythm track whose tempo speeds up and slows down continually. The comic-book themed skits, will help take you deep into the mind of an MC who is as otherworldly as they come. And in today's bland commercial rap universe, Operation: Doomsday's left-of-center beats and rhymes are the perfect remedy."

Long time Minus artist Jon Gaiser is back with his fourth studio album on Richie Hawtin's influential techno label, simply entitled III (MINUS 164LP). The first signals from the album are sent with On The Way. It is a funky track with wriggling synths executed in undeniable Gaiser fashion. Textured hi-hats and loopy bass all work on sucking you into the colorful and trippy groove. Repress of the original vinyl release on Music For Freaks back in 2001. Newly re-mastered for 2017, "Angie's Fucked" and "Sure" are sounding bigger and better. Driving dubby deep house with freaky effects. This EP was undoubtedly one of MFF's release highlights and C++ needs no introduction having been making music for past 24 years and setting up Vizual Records with production partner Diz. Four Tet paid homage to this rarity by adding "Angie's Fucked" to his FabricLive.59 compilation, released in 2011 (FABRIC 118CD). The track sits comfortably alongside Burial, Floating Points, Red Rack'em, Ricardo Villalobos, and Caribou.

SABATINI & LUIGI TOZZI, DINO Manticora 12"
Techno veteran Dino Sabatini meets up-and-coming talent Luigi Tozzi. The two producers' shared aptitude for adventurous and evolving techno is crystallized in this collaboration. Opener "Manticora" is an eight-minute experience that takes the listener through winding claustrophobia as ringing feedback pulses across the stereo field and cavernous rhythms dance about. "Celeno" slowly unravels under a backing of shuffling hats and a rolling kick drum. Twinkling synths swirl around before giving way to a rhythmic and compelling melody. "Aello" the listener in with softer drums while a haunting drone builds up. Over this, ghostly arpeggios develop alongside weightier drums.

SUZUKI & SOUND CARRIERS, DAMO Live At Marie-Antoinette 2LP
The Play Loud! (live) music series is based on three precepts: Alan Lomax's work as an archivist and chronicler, John Peel's BBC radio sessions, and the work of Direct Cinema pioneers, such as the Maysles Brothers, Leacock, Wildenhahn and Pennebaker. Filming live shows means not doing things TV-style, but in a very personal, intuitive and adventurous manner - nothing is staged for the shoot. Play Loud!'s intention is it to create an extensive archive of interesting popular music and culture that includes both, the huge quantity of unreleased filmed material by the filmmakers and also material that comes from other sources. Some of the recordings - if popular demand is strong - will be offered as limited vinyl LPs.Dietmar Post and Lucía Palacios on filming live music: "As filmmakers, it is important the performance we film will be recorded unadulterated. At the same time we do select by positioning and framing the camera, i.e. we watch subjectively. In principle we try to edit inside the camera because we would like to show the presentation in its entirety. It is crucial to know that most of the time we only work with one single camera. . . . Our work turns into an active composition during the show. It could be called a form of drawing (in German the term 'drawing' inhabits the word 'recording') with the camera. As with all spontaneous/improvised art this sometimes works out nicely, other times it fails poorly."Dirk Dresselhaus/Schneider TM on the concert: "I find it fairly difficult to say something about how the music in this concert came about, cause we didn't plan or rehearse anything and hardly were able to hear each other on stage. Wherever it came from, the energy and course of this concert is very much based on group dynamics and an almost telepathic sort of communication, like a swarm of fish. When I mixed the sound later on in the studio I discovered a lot of weird things on the separate tracks: for example Kptmichigan's guitar signal is changing level for about +/-30 dB once in a while which is a lot and was probably caused by a broken microphone cable. Luckily the fucked up parts made the sound even heavier and more distorted instead of destroying it."

Play Loud present the new album from Floating Di Morel and ULF. The band members in their own words: "The new (fifth) Floatin' LP is divided in two parts. On one side you hear the last works together with Thorsten Neu, which you know from the records Said My Said (PL 006LP, 2009) and Goal Less Play (PL 034LP, 2013). The other side is a new more electronic experience with ULF."39 Clocks member Jürgen Gleue about Floating di Morel: " (...) sound like Sky Saxon & The Seeds did float, effortless, it's just there as it pops into your head like a thumb into your mouth."Jake Austen of Roctober Magazine writes: "Like a classy Suicide (the band, not the act of desperation) these cats present minimal, chilling music, but wear ties and sweep the warehouse before inviting you over for a bizarre ultra-underground concert."German critic Robert Miessner states: "If Velvet Underground had not disintegrated in 1973 and instead had met with Neu! or Mute's Daniel Miller, they would have sounded like Floating di Morel."

ERICKSON, ROKY All That May Do My Rhyme LP
LP version. Play Loud! Productions present the first reissue of Roky Erickson's All That May Do My Rhyme, originally released in 1994. Roky Erickson is a legend. Former member of the 13th Floor Elevators, he was considered the white James Brown. Drug problems and diagnosed schizophrenia made him an outsider. By the '90s, he was struggling to survive on a $200 monthly social security check. In 1990, artists like R.E.M., ZZ Top, and the Jesus and Mary Chain recorded his songs for a tribute album. Erickson performed publicly for the first time in many years at the Austin Music Awards. In 1994, he returned to the studio with guitarists Charlie Sexton and the Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary to record All That May Do My Rhyme. This record was released on CD, cassette, and vinyl in 1994 on Paul Leary's Trance Syndicate Records. Notes from the original press release: "Trance Syndicate is pleased to present the first studio recording in almost a decade by one of the most gifted, most influential, most inspired singer/songwriters from the Republic of Texas since Buddy Holly. Roky Erickson is back! performing new songs and a few classics in one of the best studios in Texas, backed by some of Texas' finest musicians." CIRCULAR RUINS The Thorned Maze Cassette
Circular Ruins is the project of Netherlands-born, Berlin-based musician and visual artist Marijn Degenaar (b. 1987), whose "arcane, wistful and wishful ambient soundscaping" have been described by Boomkat as embodying "electronic music's potential for optimistic, dreamlike qualities." The Thorned Maze is a different, darker and more cerebral beast; one where the dreamy optimism is often interrupted by dissonant, atonal clusters, rattling textures, and rhythms that suggest subterranean infestations. The name Circular Ruins suggests the cyclical nature of being and time, and the atmosphere of his most cohesive release to date suggests a period of existential exploration; Touching on something eternal, conjuring images of fallen idols and ruined civilizations, past and present; an astral free-float through imagined eras and landscapes, as well as a hazy reflection on the cracked mirrors of the now, even hinting at the inner turmoil of a cyberpunk dystopia.

The lead singer, Simeon Coxe III, had gotten his hands on a vintage '40s audio oscillator and was insisting that it become a part of the show. The rest of the band was understandably upset - this was more than a decade before electronic music would become an accepted practice. Before long, the band was down to two members, Simeon, and drummer Danny Taylor. Now with full control, the two members re-christened themselves the Silver Apples and set about releasing one of history's great forgotten albums, their self-titled debut. Silver Apples is a record that reached far ahead of its time. CAPTAIN MARRYAT Captain Marryat LP
2017 repress. Shadoks Music present a reissue of Captain Marryat's self-titled album, originally released in 1974. First reissued in 2010 as a black vinyl edition and in 2013 as a transparent pink vinyl edition of 200, This edition comes on transparent white vinyl with a color photo on the front. Captain Marryat were from Glasgow, Scotland and they recorded this demo album in 1974, released in a tiny pressing on the Thor label, hoping to get an EMI or Chrysalis deal, who both showed interest in the band at the time. They wanted to record only a single, but instead came up with a complete album of self-composed tracks. Since it was not that easy for a Scottish band to get attention down in London, this album was the only pressing ever done and was sold at band gigs only. Five musicians, great organ, vocals, extra heavy fuzz-guitar with drums and bass - amazing underground songs, influenced by Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Beggars Opera - a true lost classic. Dig on the truly tribal percussion, searing guitar leads and drugged-out keys on the fully-instrumental and galloping "Dance Of Thor." The band formed in the early '70s, around 1971 to 1975, generating quite a following while playing all around Scotland and the Borders at various venues including Burns Howff in Glasgow which was a very popular venue as other bands such as Alex Harvey Band, Nazareth, and Beggars Opera also played there. Shadoks Music were lucky to find the band themselves to make a deal so this beauty can finally conquer the world of rock music. Many people watching eBay auctions were surprised to see this album selling for nearly 3,000 Euro each. Before that, this album was completely unknown. Members include: Jimmy Rorrison, Hugh Finnegan, Allan Bryce, Tommy Hendry, and Ian McEleny. Comes in a heavy sleeve; Comes as 180 gram, transparent white vinyl; Includes a two-page insert; Edition of 400 (numbered).

RAINBOW BAND Rainbow Band 2LP
Shadoks Music present a reissue of Rainbow Band's self-titled album, released twice, in 1970 and again in 1971. Both distinct releases are included in this reissue. Denmark's Rainbow Band was formed in late 1969 as a super-group consisting of Peer Frost (ex-Young Flowers), Lars Bisgaard (ex-Maxwells), Carsten Smedegaard (ex-Beefeaters), Bent Hesselmann, and the former jazz players Niels Brønsted and Bo Stief. They played jazz-influenced progressive rock in the style of Burnin Red Ivanhoe and Traffic's self-titled second album (1968). Their rhythm section produced a powerful '60s beat, forcing Peer Frost to squeeze out some of his best guitar solos. The singer Lars Bisgaard was replaced by Allan Mortensen (ex-Tears) at the end of 1970. A Canadian group was already using the name Rainbow Band, which forced the Danish group to change their name into Midnight Sun in July 1971. Melody Maker editor Richard Williams wrote about the album in 1971, shortly after its initial release: "the first time I heard this album, I was immediately seduced by its sense of freshness and space. The styles of playing are superficially little different from those of their brothers in Britain and America, but I find the atmosphere of this music wholly more relaxed and open." The first version of the album, with vocalist Lars Bisgaard, was released in December 1970. The second version, replacing the original Bisgaard version with vocalist Allan Mortensen, came out in mid-February 1971. The third version of this album (same music but new name) came out as Midnight Sun's 1971 self-titled release (AU 5030CD) with a new cover made by "Roger Dean". Beside the new vocals on both Rainbow Band versions, they differ in the songs as well. One song on the first version does not appear on the second version, and two songs on the second version do not appear on the first version. Perhaps one of the best Danish production in the 1970s, produced by Freddy Hansson and Rainbow Band; Musically, it's so fine that it certainly ranks among the five best Danish '70s albums, easily. A fantastic album from beginning to the end - and both version are great. Comes in a heavy gatefold sleeve; Comes as 180 gram vinyl; Includes printed inner-sleeves, Japan protection sleeves a two-page insert with liner notes and many unseen photos; Edition of 600 (numbered).

LUNDBERG & MATS LODEN, LARS Rebecca LP
Shadoks Music present Lars Lundberg and Mats Lodén's Rebecca. Lars Lundberg and Mats Lodén were buddies already from first grade in Luleå, located in northernmost Sweden. Although they were good friends, they did not share a musical interest during the first three school years. Lars was lucky enough to have a very special dad, who presented him a Hagström Standard 80 White Pearl electric guitar and a small amplifier on his eighth birthday in 1964. In 1973, Lars and Mats formed a new band together (Savannah) with old classmate Benny Sjödin. All three played the guitar. This was of course not an ideal setup for a band. The situation was solved by recruiting the one year younger Peter Larsson on drums. Lars played the bass guitar, as well as harmonica, recorder and alto saxophone. Benny and Mats doubled on the bass guitar when Lars was busy singing or playing another instrument. After the split of Savannah in 1975, Lars and Mats became heavily oriented towards early British progressive music. Lars was fond of bands like Pink Floyd, Traffic, and Curved Air, while Mats favored music made by for example David Bowie, Tyrannosaurus Rex, and The Doors. All songs on the album are written by Lars and Mats. With one exception, all titles and song texts are in English. There are no political ambitions whatsoever. The songs can rather be described as whimsical and psychedelic, which makes the album rather unique at the time, when Swedish music was either commercial with lyrics in English or anti-commercial with lyrics in Swedish and an outspoken political message. The album was originally pressed in 200 copies only, as it was intended to be a demo album. However, at the time no major Swedish record company showed any interest in the music. Lars sold his four-channel tape recorder, in order to afford the pressing. Most of the records were sold to friends and schoolmates in Luleå. There are very cool electric underground songs but others go in the direction of the best Tony Caro & John. A great and rare Swedish album which appears in Hans Pokoras's 7001 Record Collector Dreams book with a six-star value. Comes in a heavy sleeve; Comes as 180 gram vinyl; Includes a printed inner-sleeve, a Japan protection sleeve, and a two-page insert; Edition of 400 (numbered).

However, asking him what he would call the sound he makes, his simple answer is: "Rave Ambient". The All I Feel 1 Million EP is a record full of diversity: emotional and dreamy, ARP-based ambient tracks with rave and trance references, to broken beats, weird synth solos, up to a rough but melodious techno tune. Lobster Theremin regular Imre Kiss delivers a dark and dubby version of "444".

SECOND WOMAN S/W LP
Future music duo Second Woman's sophomore full-length for Spectrum Spools further hones their distinctive fusion of shape-shifting software sculpture and tessellated footwork. Shivering digital textures oscillate with and against algorithmically mapped percussion samples; smeared synthetic chords levitate in the distance; stabs of digital noise punctuate the mix in twitchy, time-distorting patterns. Their anamorphosis verges on ascetic: stark, splintered waveforms rendered into unique fiber optic hieroglyphs. Multi-instrumentalists Josh Eustis and Turk Dietrich share a deep history going back to their days in the New Orleans ambient electronic community, as part of Telefon Tel Aviv and Belong, respectively. Even so, S/W pushes beyond their combined discographies to date, flexing impossibilities, building rhythms from arrhythmia, teasing veiled emotion from bold iterations of cold code.

ARKBRO, ELLEN For Organ And Brass LP
LP version. For Organ And Brass is comprised of two works by the Stockholm-based composer Ellen Arkbro. Both works focus on tuning, intonation, and harmonic modulation. In previous projects, Arkbro composed for early music ensembles, wrote a series of durational pieces utilizing synthetic tones and processed guitars, and, most recently, presented a work lasting 26 days at the Stockholm Concert Hall. For Organ And Brass looks back to Arkbro's studies in just intonation with La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, and their disciple Jung Hee Choi in New York, as well as with kindred spirit Marc Sabat in Berlin. The title composition was written for an organ with a specific kind of historical tuning known as meantone temperament. It was only after locating an appropriate instrument -- the Sherer-Orgel dating back to 1624 in St. Stephen's Church in Tangermünde, Northeastern Germany -- that Arkbro set about recording both for organ and brass and its counterpart, Three. "Hidden within the harmonic framework of the Renaissance organ are intervals and chords that bare a close resemblance to those found in the modalities of traditional blues music," explains Arkbro. "The work can be thought of as a very slow and reduced blues music." The work moves gradually through a series of long, sustained tones played by the organ and in parallel by a brass trio comprised of horn, tuba, and trombone. Arkbro's treatment of pitch resembles the tuning strategies of La Monte Young. The brass parts were performed by microtonal brass trio Zinc & Copper, a group whose repertoire has included works by C.C. Hennix and Christian Wolff. In Arkbro's words, "the brass instruments and the organ fall into patterns of interaction in which a new breathing instrument emerges." Three, which follows the 20-minute title work, deploys the same principles of harmonic relativity. In removing the organ from the instrumentation and switching to a different meter, Three acts as an intimate counterpoint to the ritual drone cycles of the title piece. For Organ And Brass was recorded in Tangermünde, Germany in September 2016. The performers were Johan Graden (organ), Elena Kakaliagou (horn), Hilary Jeffery (trombone), and Robin Hayward (tuba). Ellen Arkbro's work has been performed in Brooklyn, Stockholm, Norberg, Bologna, Gothenburg, Berlin, Birmingham, and Malmö, and on Swedish National Radio.

BASHO, ROBBIE The Grail & The Lotus LP
A reissue of Robbie Basho's The Grail & The Lotus, originally released in 1966. It's become an oft-quoted statement that John Coltrane was the Father, Pharaoh Sanders was the Son, and Albert Ayler, the Holy Ghost. It could arguably apply to the holy trinity of steel string guitarists as well. Many claim John Fahey to be the Father, Kottke was considered the Son, and Robbie Basho would certainly be considered the Holy Ghost. The Basho/Ayler similarities are many, and both pushed their idioms further physically and emotionally than all of their respective contemporaries. The Grail & The Lotus was Basho's second release for the Takoma label, preceding the wildly prolific year of 1967 that produced three absolute classics with the Falconers Arm sets and Basho Sings (C 1012LP). Supposedly the thematics of The Grail & The Lotus came to Basho while recovering from a feverish bout of pneumonia, and in that state Basho envisioned and expressed a simultaneous glimpse of the Feudal Age, European and Japanese evocations side-by-side, both co-mingling with Knighthoods in Flower. A truly outsider take on the American primitive genre, The Grail & The Lotus is finally reissued for the first time on vinyl, 50 years after its initial release. Beautifully remastered; Edition of 500.

NON BAND Non Band LP
TAL present a reissue of Non Band's self-titled debut release, originally released in 1982 on Telegraphy Records. Yuichi Jibiky of Telegraph Records describes the release: "The Japanese punk rock movement known as Tokyo rockers began in the summer of 1978. It incubated an independent music culture as well as a host of fascinating, individualistic musicians. One of the more striking units was the male-female duo Maria 023. Non played bass for them, and it was here that she first attracted attention. However, Maria 023 was short-lived, and Non would not reappear until the following year, August 1979, on stage at the legendary concert event 'Drive to 80s'. Her unbilled performance at the event consisted of several songs for solo bass and vocals, and her combination of intensity and a distinctly female emotionality made a striking impression. In the months that followed, Non continued to play solo and she became a pivotal presence among the female rockers on the scene at the time. Finally, she shifted from solo to group performance, and formed Non Band. After several member changes, the line-up stabilized into a unique trio with Kinosuke Yamagishi on violin and clarinet and Mitsuru Tamagaki on drums. . . . In February 1982 Non Band's first album was released as a 10-inch LP on Telegraph Records, the label's fifth release. In the early Japanese indies scene, if a release sold 1000 copies it was counted as a significant success. The Non Band album went through several repressing and sold 2000 copies. . . . Just six months after the release of the album the group would grind to a halt. Members quit the band one after another, and with no possible replacements to be found, Non herself faded away from the scene. . . . [Non] invited two fabulous musicians, Keiji Haino and Tatsuya Yoshida, to Hirosaki, and performed together with them as well as solo. This marked the beginning of a new phase for her, and she played live in Tokyo and released a solo album, ie (2002). She got back in touch with Yamagishi and Tamagaki and reformed Non Band. . . . In 2012, the group released an album of recent live performances entitled Non Band Liven' 2009-2012." Includes insert with liner notes; Includes download code.

LAKE Forever Or Never CD
LAKE are an experimental-pop ensemble centered around the songwriting partnership of wife/husband duo Ashley Eriksson and Elijah Moore who met and formed in the progressive Cascadian college town of Olympia, Washington, in 2005. Since moving to the woods of Whidbey Island, Eriksson and Moore, they have only burrowed deeper into this lifestyle, concentrating on their songwriting and art, enabled in part by musical contributions for the Cartoon Network show Adventure Time. More than ten years on, LAKE have made Forever Or Never, their eighth album, which bookends the first decade of the group's take on the 1970s rock and pop idiom. Forever Or Never is a collection of humanistic songs that explore the complications of moral and spiritual being in a hostile world. Musically, LAKE are, as always, unparalleled in re-imagining and renewing the melodic language of 1970s soft-rock, (think Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, The Roches, Laura Nyro, etc), implementing jazz-chord voicings, memorable hooks and a wide palette of colorful, inventive instrumentation. Two other key LAKE players are Andrew Dorsett and Mark "Markly" Morisson, (penman of "Work With What You Got" and "Push And Pull"). Both musicians joined LAKE at the beginning and have been itinerant contributors since, lacing LAKE's DNA with their funky musicianship and distinct songwriting. Embracing both digital and analog means, LAKE's music is a radiant creation, blending percussiveness and tonality, synthesized sounds and acoustic frequencies. They make music glow in the same light as their predecessors, like the collaborations of Eno and Byrne, or Joni Mitchell's exploratory middle-70s work. Several of Eriksson's songs from Forever Or Never expand Eriksson's predilection for narrative songwriting and unpretentious storytelling, drawing from local events. Moore on the other hand focuses less on narrative events than Eriksson, often meditating on the confining nature of culture and religion. The album was recorded with music engineer Nicholas Wilbur (Hungry Cloud Darkening) at his church-turned-studio dubbed The Unknown, which he shares with Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie, The Microphones), also a contributor, (Elverum added guitar on "Gone Against The Wind"). Paul Benson (Hungry Cloud Darkening, Ever Ending Kicks) plays on most of the basic tracks. Karl Blau, who recorded and released LAKE's first album, played sax on "Over And Under". The album is dedicated to the late artist and musician Geneviève Castrée, who contributed backing vocals to "Magazine" and "Gone Against The Wind".

DRIVER, TOBY Madonnawhore CD
"On the heels of Kayo Dot's 2016 album Plastic House On Base Of Sky, New York City based avant-garde musician Toby Driver sustains his inexhaustible output with a solo album titled Madonnawhore. After exploring a retro-futurist noir sound on Kayo Dot's 2014 album Coffins On Io then delving even further into electronic music with his aforementioned last album, Driver was eager to write a different kind of song. Madonnawhore represents a foray into traditional songwriting, stripped of the progressive flourishes and unpredictability of Driver's band. These six austere tracks are sparse and atmospheric, evoking empty spaces and the beauty sometimes inherent in death. They occupy a heretofore unexplored place in Driver's oeuvre, and were recorded primarily as a solo effort but share some lyrical contributions from Jason Byron, who also writes for Kayo Dot. Although not a concept album, Madonnawhore is united by its exploration of the 'madonna-whore complex,' a psychological neurosis first identified by Sigmund Freud whereby a man feels he can only love a woman who maintains a saint-like purity, but desires to be intimate with someone he considers to be debased. This sacred/profane dichotomy has far reaching effects that are seemingly inescapable in modern society and ripe for examination."

RAT COLUMNS Candle Power LP
LP version. Rat Columns is the mutable musical project of David West, an artist as prolific as he is diverse in his output. West is the driving force behind the groups Rank/Xerox, Liberation, and Lace Curtain, he was also a member of Total Control, and most recently debuted a solo album proper. Whether its forward-facing punk or turning his hand to crafting sleek prisms of pop, West's credentials check out. Rat Columns is no exception, always central to his vision and returned to many times since its inception in Perth almost a decade ago. A third album, entitled Candle Power, was recorded in Guildford, Western Australia, with the Perth crew of West, Amber Gempton, Louis Hooper, and Chris Cobilis, Candle Power sees the band's universe of chiming guitar pop explode into new worlds of color and shade. Candle Power tunnels further than ever before down the pop mainline, cutting in with moments of soul, disco, and experimental plots. West is a magpie-like musician, unafraid to assemble songs from a motley collection of influences and ideas. He weaves songs together with a deft hand and an acute grasp for the memorable yet momentary. A drumroll sputters to life kicking off the album with first track "Someone Else's Dream", a bittersweet remonstrance underscored by West and Gempton's shared vocals, vivid keyboards, guitar jangle, and a resolute beat. On "Time's No Vessel" West laments against a dreamy guitar refrain that's pure Johnny Marr. "Blinded By The Shadow" marks an about turn for the album, seeing the record start to flex its motorik muscles with a sequenced bassline and rock-solid drumbeat. "Is This Really What You're Like?" takes on a similar focused shuffle only with a more minimal demeanor. Whilst, "Candle Power II" takes the disco to the other side of the tracks with its shimmering synths, violin drones, and uniform beat. "Northern Soul" chases its own heartbeat through lush, sweeping synths and hushed refrains. "Dream Tonight" concludes the album with its propulsive drum machine, searching keyboard lines, and effusive bassline. It's a tour de force of pristine pop akin to New Order in its ability to capture this mercurial feeling, to listen through the music. Candle Power as an album is enamored with the fleeting, the difference between letting go and moving on.

FLYING SAUCER ATTACK Flying Saucer Attack LP
"First-ever US vinyl of the debut album by Bristol's Flying Saucer Attack, and first vinyl edition of any kind since 1993! This edition of the album is produced in full collaboration with FSA/Dave Pearce. Aka Rural Psychedelia, Flying Saucer Attack's first album was released in 1993 after a couple of instantly sold-out singles. Released at the height of the shoegaze boom, the album is a blend of memorable fuzzed out songs and far-out instrumental doodles, sidestepping the rock bombast of many contemporaries in favor of a home-made aesthetic. FSA's blend of razor-edged static, softly sung melody, and echoing atmospherics builds a dour beauty that sustains itself over the course of the entire program. 'My Dreaming Hill,' 'Wish,' and 'The Season Is Ours' are couched in fuzz and whispery reverb, but are beautiful and accessible tunes, able to stand on their own in any context. 'Popol Vuh 1' and 'Popol Vuh 2' are straight up tributes to the now much better known German masters, steeped in the hushed atmosphere of the best Vuh records (if not exactly the sound)."
