DRAHLA Fictional Decision 7"
Debut 7" from this fiery three-piece post-punk band from Leeds. Drahla consists of: Luciel Brown - vocals, guitar, and bass; Rob Riggs - vocals, guitar, bass, and keys; Mike Ainsley - drums and vocals. "Fictional Decision" is a dark and gruesome slab of indie rock with nods towards Pod-era Breeders (1990) with spoken/sung vocals and rattling, scuzzy guitars. On "Dog Collar Guillotine" the off-kilter chaos continues with a raucous blast of skewed, avant-rock that nods to Sonic Youth's more visceral pop moments. Silver grey vinyl.

EASY Magic Seed CD
Rerelease of the debut album by Easy, Magic Seed. Originally released in 1990. It was twenty-seven years ago that Swedish indie band Easy released their debut album Magic Seed on the renowned Blast First label. Label head Paul Smith evidently recognized the perfect combination of Sonic Youth-like intensity and the sweet harmonies of The Beach Boys. When Easy first arrived in England they met audiences who were unaware of Swedish pop, except for Abba of course. Easy's singer Johan Holmlund quickly took advantage of the situation. With his tongue firmly in his cheek, Johan pointed out that Abba's Agnetha Faltskog was babysitting in their native Jonkoping. The journalists liked what they heard. In June 1990 NME's Dele Fadele wrote: "I think Easy will help break down that traditional English snobbish attitude towards European acts. People will be made to sit up and notice, 'cos what they're doing right now is intrinsically more valid than most of the inadequates who clog up record shops." Easy released three singles: "Castle Train", "He Brings The Honey", and "Horoscope" which all found place in the UK indie charts. They toured all around Europe with the likes of The Gun Club, The House Of Love, Lush, The Charlatans, and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Remastered version of this classic debut, all with hypnotic original artwork by William Latham. CD version comes in a gatefold sleeve; Includes six bonus tracks.

BRADFORD Thirty Years Of Shouting Quietly 2CD
A Turntable Friend Records present a reissue of Bradford's Shouting Quietly, originally released in 1990. Thirty years ago a young Northern band named Bradford were very publically handed the baton by Morrissey to blaze a trail in English indie music after the demise of The Smiths. Top British producer Stephen Street immediately signed the band to his brand new Foundation label and the scene was set for Bradford who in the words of Sounds Magazine in May 1988 were "Five guys with strict haircuts -- their image conjures up short, sharp shocks but their music tells a different story... creating intelligent and distinctive, finely crafted pop songs. There are no jangly jaunts through well- trodden paths of predictability -- the image, the name, the songs, the intelligence and the voice see to that". Alas two things destroyed their chances: the collapse of Rough Trade, sending Stephen Street's new label into ruin and the overwhelming avalanche in music that became known as "Madchester". Bradford's brand of sleek English pop was suddenly completely out of step with the times. Thirty years on and it's time for a reappraisal. Here it is in its remastered form, containing three top twenty indie singles, one being the renowned indie classic "Skin Storm" which Morrissey also recorded and released in 1991. This newly remastered re-release also contains "In Liverpool" (a Record Mirror "Single of The Week") their first single for Stephen Street's Foundation label, B sides, the eponymous French mini-album, and some never before released material. Extensive liner notes by Fergal Kinney (Louder Than War). Double CD version comes in a gatefold sleeve.

SANTISTEBAN, ALFONSO Spanish Moog LP
Adarce Records present a reissue of Alfonso Santisteban's Spanish Moog, originally released in 1975.Don Sicalíptico on the recording: "We can think of fewer things more Spanish than the works of Alfonso Carlos Santisteban. . . . A tireless Spanish music workaholic, he made no differences between copla, rumba, pop or soul and didn't mind if it was for Bambino, La Polaca, Mara Lasso, Calibre 38, Ellas or Mila. . . . Spanish Moog, an album Adarce Records has the pleasure to present, is one of those strange and almost invisible musical milestones that our man portrayed in Italy. Just as he wrote in his autobiography, in 1973 and thanks to the help of José Antonio de La Loma, he met two of the capos of the most important film music publishing empire in Italy, Giuseppe Campi and Giuseppe Giachi. They were about to open a C.A.M. (Creazione Artistiche Musicale) delegation in Madrid so they could start building their business in the most exciting times for Spanish film industry. The company started by signing two Spanish composers: our man, and Waldo de Los Ríos. . . . Apart from a large number of small (or more like embarrassing) film scores, Santisteban published five library albums up until 1975 for C.A.M.: Ambiente E Folklore (1974), Rinascimenti (1974), Night Club (1984), Situazione Per Orchestra (1975) and this one, Spanish Moog. Five of the songs included ('Jugando Al toro', 'Nuestro Ayer', 'Gitanos', 'Torremolinos Soul' and 'Todo Ha Sido Un Sueño') were originally recorded by Santisteban and Rafael Ferro for the album Flamenco Pop (1969), and three more ('Zorongo', 'Nuestro Ayer' and 'Tierra Mojada') were originally meant for Sabor A Fresa (1971) by La Nueva Banda De Santisteban. Beyond the supposed editorial filibusterism, what is left is a wonderful festival of grooves and beats; an omnipresent Moog, wah-wah and 'cañi' soul blend in 'Torremolinos soul'. Dreamy melancholy, fuzz and southern touch in 'Tierra Mojada", impeccable arabesque beats in the steadfast 'Zorongo', funk and folklore sown tight in 'Noche En Marbella' and pure space Blaxploitation in 'Tute De Reyes"... Alfonso Carlos Santisteban would collide inevitably with a time already lost in the annals of history. We cannot think of a better way to resume his works and his person than the sentence he used to open his autobiography: '... I speak with the authority given to me by failure...'"

RILEY, TERRY Persian Surgery Dervishes 2LP
Restocked; last copies... The classic minimal music album is now available again on vinyl for the first time since the '70s. During the 1970s, Californian composer Terry Riley concentrated on solo keyboard performances, continuing to make music yet writing down almost nothing. Riley selected a mode, chose a few motifs or basic patterns and then, seated on the floor in front of his audience, improvised on electronic keyboard. The electric organ, superseded at later concerts by a synthesizer, was portable and consistent. By the early '70s, Riley had come to feel that scores were a distraction. Faithful interpretation of an already written piece was a deviation from the true purpose of making music, which was spiritual quest. Fortunately, some of those live performances were captured on tape. Persian Surgery Dervishes, issued initially on the French label Shandar in 1972, features two such concerts for electric organ and reel-to-reel delay, one recorded in Los Angeles on April 18th, 1971, the other in Paris on May 24th, 1972. At the start of that decade, Riley became a dedicated student of the great Hindustani singer Pandit Pran Nath. Looking into North Indian classical tradition, he found correspondences to modal and cyclic ideas that he was already working on. In 1971, Riley started teaching Indian music at Mills College, in Oakland. That experience fed directly into his solo keyboard performances, but other influences were also shaping his music. Personal research into ancient Persian culture and the poetry of Rumi lit up his imagination, while the repetitive swirling of Sufi devotional music from North Africa and jazz, an enduring source of inspiration, reverberate through these performances. The Californian version of Persian Surgery Dervishes starts with low dark tones, dense and brooding like a huddled human figure, deep in introspection. But as the improvisation unfolds Riley's buoyant spirit asserts itself, spiraling out in ecstatic coils. The Parisian concert conveys a different mood, brighter and more open in texture, more relaxed from the outset and breathing with greater freedom as it takes flight. Persian Surgery Dervishes is a mesmerizing record of a vital stage in Riley's ongoing quest for connection with the universal mind and sublime music. "Music is my spiritual path. It's my way of finding out who I am." --Terry Riley, 1976 Includes insert with liner notes by Julian Cowley; Lacquer cut by Rashad Becker; Layout by Jeroen Wille; Remastered by Equusl; Licensed from FGL Productions; Edition of 1000.

MCCLELLAN, RANDALL The Healing Music Of Rana Vol. 2 LP
Aguirre Records present the first vinyl reissue of Randall McCellan's The Healing Music Of Rana Vol. 2, originally released on cassette in 1983. Exceptional recordings by this new age maestro, only recently re-discovered by his friend JD Emmanuel and the band Sun Araw. Randall McClellan was a founding member of the electronic music studio at the Eastman School of Music in 1967 where he later received a Ph.D. in Composition, Theory and Musicology. A growing interest in North Indian music and vocal technique prompted him to develop his personal compositional practice into an active platform for inducing altered states of mind. He constructed his concerts to be spaces for harmonization of mind and body through a musical practice informed by his esoteric studies of ancient mystery schools and sacred geometry, believing these to be primarily teachings on intentional resonance. These performances were given between 1977 and 1983 in semi-darkened spaces that allowed listeners to relax on carpeting while being enveloped by sound. Each improvisation lasts from 25 to 45 minutes. An entire performance is up to three hours and is designed to provide an environment of meditative sound. His final live performance took place at New York City's Alternative Museum in October, 1983. The Music Of Rana Enviromental Series uses synthesizers, drone box, tamboura, voice, and tape delay to create an environment of continuously evolving multi-layered melody. Described as subtle, graceful, and of other worlds. The name Rana ("Sunbreath") has its origin in ancient philosophical concepts that recognized vibration as the fundamental creative force and central principle of the many esoteric mystery schools of the ancient world. In the broadest sense, the practice of music for its healing ability may well stand as our oldest continuous musical tradition. This album is the second volume in the series, and part of the cassette box set published by Sun Ark in 2013. This music is based on principles outlined in Randall's book, The Healing Forces of Music: History, Theory and Practice (1988). These compositions are selected for their meditational and healing abilities. EQ settings of treble and bass levels determine the music's effect upon you. Please explore until the most comfortable settings are found. Instrumentation includes the Moog Prodigy and MicroMoog synthesizer. RIYL: Joanna Brouk, JD Emmanuel, Iasos. 180 gram vinyl; Edition of 500.

SANDERS, PHAROAH Tauhid LP
"Pharoah Sanders is Spiritual Jazz, is Devotional Music, is the greatest living link between John Coltrane, Kamasi Washington, and the next generation of this great lineage. His Tenor Sound, his Singing Voice, his compositions, and his recordings have already stood the test of time, in his time, endured, ever-aged so finely, and have now (in my opinion) surpassed critique. Pharoah Sanders is a giant, an innovator, colorful, prayerful, and worthy of all our attention, celebration, and enthusiastic, even ecstatic accolades! Pharoah, (born Farrell Sanders of Little Rock, Arkansas on October 13, 1940,) was not only in John Coltrane's Band from 1965 - 1967, and featured as a Tenor Saxophonist on his Impulse! albums Ascension, Live At The Village Vanguard Again!, Kulu Sé Mama, Meditations, and Om, but had his own distinct concept and direction that you can hear on those recordings. Where John Coltrane is the Father of this Music, Pharoah is John's Brother, his bright, younger contemporary who was ready to express prolifically. His was a sound of entrancement, deep emotion, lyrical chanting, layered mosaic rhythmic grooves, poly-melodic heart cries, ensemble percussion, Love, surrender, upliftment, communication with his ancestors, contemporaries and those yet to arrive, and hope for awakening and peace within Humanity. Of Pharoahs 11 albums on Impulse! as a leader, the ones in front of you are Tauhid (#1 from 1967), Jewels Of Thought (#3 from 1969) and Summun Bukmun Umyun - Deaf Dumb Blind (#4 from 1970). It was John Coltrane's influence on Music and the Recording Industry that opened the door for Pharoah Sanders, and through that door Pharoah would fly, soar and inspire! During this time he was also featured on Alice Coltrane's Impulse! releases Ptah, The El Daoud playing Tenor Saxophone, Alto Flute and Bells and on her most beloved recording Journey In Satchidananda playing Soprano Saxophone and Percussion. The significance of Pharoah Sanders today is for you to discover. He is among my greatest inspirations of all time and always will be! He is a man of few words, and when you see him play now, it's more about being in his presence than expecting him to play lots of flashy runs. From his first note you know it's him and that you're in for profound integrity and deeply soulful energy. He always dresses in bold, bright hues, sometimes patterns, sometimes wearing shades, always a fez or hat of some sort. He stood out in GQ Style's 2016 feature 'These 10 Living Legends of Jazz Prove Nobody Can Out-Dress the OGs' -- the relevance is there. So strong! The last time I saw Pharoah in Los Angeles at Catalina's I was happy to connect with my friend Knxwledge. He was there with Rapper Earl Sweatshirt and Producer Alchemist. I sat with a table of 18-year-old prodigies including pianist Jamael Dean . . . Recommendation: Put all of these records on repeat for days and days, let them transmute your life, then tell your friends, family and everyone you come into contact with about Pharoah Sanders!'

VA Paul Major: Feel the Music Vol. 1 CD
"Paul Major -- pioneering record dealer and frontman of the band Endless Boogie -- has spent over a half-century immersed in the weirdest albums cast aside by the music industry, honing a world-renowned knowledge of the most unique, rare, and uncannily strange tunes of the rock and roll era. Feel the Music Vol. 1 compiles the fruits of his hard-won expertise, presenting cuts chosen by Paul from the far reaches of psychedelia, lounge, and loner folk: twelve utterly singular takes on musical expression, yielding a somehow cohesive and sublime whole. Paul is a longtime champion of 'Real People' musicians, one-of-a-kind artists operating wholly outside the industry, and this compilation gives us ample evidence of these distinct forms of genius. Though it moves through genres as diverse as the broken-down blues rock of Ray Harlowe & Gyp Fox, the ethereal psych-folk of Justyn Rees, the earnest schmaltz of balladeers Sebastian, and Darius, and the unclassifiable eeriness of Jerry Solomon, Feel the Music is permeated by a genuine feeling of no-holds-barred creativity and an unbridled love of musical expression. Listeners attuning themselves to these twelve parallel universe radio hits will undoubtedly come away feeling the same."

ALIEN SHE Feeler LP
Feeler is the debut release from Dublin experimental trio Alien She. The group comprises of Katie O'Neill, Aoife Mairéad Nic Dhonncha, and Darragh McCabe. Founding members Katie and Aoife came together at a feminist meeting, and like true practitioners of punk, with the help of final addition Darragh, their political voice has deepened and developed since the band's formation. Their sound is defined by their combined interest in art, punk, poetry, and expressive music, and their inspiration comes from multiple genres of writing and personal experience. The end result is a mixture of raw and relentless energy which manifests itself in a number of different manners; sometimes in the form of agitated punk, sometimes reminiscent of '80s shoegaze, but their constant progression and experimentation keeps their ever-evolving sound fresh.

TRUX Orbiter LP
There's been an air of hypnagogic mystery surrounding Acid Test's sublabel Avenue 66 from the start. Joey Anderson's oblique, Prince-inspired incantation "Above The Cherry Moon" (2013) set the tone for a label that's sound that has found beauty in the furthest recesses of the dancefloor, in the murkiest decay of kick drums and rave stabs. Fitting then, that the first album on the imprint comes from Trux, an artist who has chosen to reveal nearly nothing about themselves. Following a cult classic mini-LP for Office Recordings (2016), Orbiter bears out the anonymous producer as a master of liminal, conceptual dance music. Orbiter's ten tracks have a vaporous, shape-shifting quality, threatening to topple over into full-on kick drum bliss or vanish into ambience. Opener, "With It", moves from heady ambient rush to skeletal piano, while "Blinko" and "Roy's Garage" spell out a hazy memoriam for the UK continuum. Forlorn pianos ring out amongst the field recordings, excitable toms, and jungle bass all softened in the enveloping gauze. Orbiter positions Trux as an unknown auteur who puts evocative world of tone and echo into dizzying motion, content to watch from the wings.

ZABIELA, JAMES Balance 029 2CD
James Zabiela enters the fold of Balance's compilation selectors. His unfeasibly intricate approach to DJing shines through on this sprawling two-parter, created through a back-and-forth process between his Pioneer DDJ-RZ and Ableton and featuring two exclusive new productions from the man himself. Act One begins with gentle electronica like B12's "Untold" that brings to mind Sasha & Digweed's classic Northern Exposure series, building to the mesmerizing piano crescendos of Grandbrothers' "Bloodflow". Sad City's "Steady Jam", reminiscent of classic Balearic mixes lead you into a section of whirring machinery and sensual acid via Pye Corner Audio's "Dead Ends" fusing with HOLOVR's "Into Light". Second Story & Appleblim's rework of Debussy's majestic "Reverie 68" offers organic tones, with Oddhoody's "The Deep" switching the rhythm into a taut breakbeat under Kraftwerkian synths. The epic melodies continue as Merrin Karras's "Void" swells over the metallic percussion of Pev & Kowton's "Junked" and in the sparse riffs of Davis's "Plenitude". The mix takes on a haunting tone with Ozel AB's "Positronic Dreams" and Courser's sorrowful "Distances", before Zabiela stuns with an exclusive new production, "Vines", created largely with Teenage Engineering's OP-1 synth. AAAA and ARCHITECTURAL take the mix to a satisfying climax before a sudden halt. Act Two mirrors the experience of one of Zabiela's club sets, layered with the additional levels of detail. The sorrowful, bubbling chime arpeggios and indecipherable vocal FX of Goldmund's "Thread" and Earlham Mystics' "Waters" set you off in elegiac fashion, but the rave-y stabs of KiNK's "Radio Slave" remix will lead you to the dancefloor. It's a dizzying mix with myriad styles and moods: Elastic acid via another exclusive track from Zabiela, "X-Ray"; the taut metallic breakbeat of Lanark Artefax's "Touch Absence"; raw '90s house from Redlight's "City Jams"; the ethereal techno of ROD's "Pull"; and a maddening crescendo of warehouse-grade bangers. The mix ends in blissful territory with the dreamy tones of Paper Dollhouse's "Crayons" and J.Mono's Model 500-channeling "Sspses". Also features Sapphire Slows, Kornél Kovács, Barry Lynn, VC-118A, Talaboman, Francisco Branda, Ecco Foul, Island People, OOBE, Steve Hauschildt, Avalon Emerson, Mak & Pasteman, Pisetzky, John Beltran, Lawrence, Lake People, Solitary Dancer, Chambray, Silas & Snare, Truncate, Christina, Plant43, Sinfol, Barbara Ford, Steve Parker, Fabrizio Lapiana, SHDW & Obscure Shape, Ryan James Ford, Benjamin Damage, Mark Henning, Special Request, Wata Igarashi, A Sagittariun, Anthony Linell, Hans Berg, and Sine Sleeper.

CLARIAN Television Days CD
Canadian DJ/Producer Clarian presents his highly anticipated debut album, Television Days via Australia's Balance Music. Ever enigmatic and distinctive, Clarian, a songwriter and sound engineer from Montreal, first gained notable recognition by the music scene via his former work in synth pop duo Footprintz, releasing several highly-acclaimed singles as well as Escape Yourself (2013), an album project that was co-produced with Ewan Pearson. Since the release of the aforementioned long-player, Clarian has continued his sonic development, maintaining his imaginative semblance channeling this into his own signature recording techniques and collaborations. Clarian has also collaborated and engineered on several warmly received releases with Guy Gerber, Tiga, and recently Felix Da Housecat. Television Days, influenced by a Casio found under the bed of an Airbnb, was created in Berlin during a tumultuous period and follows the tragic adventures of Kevin Jones, a down-and-out television scriptwriter living in west Hollywood who's obsessed with Carl Sagan's Cosmos and believes he's being contacted by ancient astronauts. This characteristically ineffable theme is matched by the album's equally passionate and otherworldly style, with the long, drawn-out synths on opener "Dedication to Sagan" and the retro-inducing soundscape on "Lost Again" offering a fitting example of what's to come over the album's ten tracks. Other highlights include the album's first single "Under the Gun", a track bursting with lush lo-fi synths and percussion, fused with the almost breathless, reverbed vocal performance from Clarian that nods in the direction of '80s synth-pop works of Mute Records. There's also the atmospheric and colorful "Tulum", the hazy synth-driven "Down and Out", the dystopian sounding "Mote of Dust", and the album's closer, "Television Days", a track where Clarian's dreamy vocals blend particularly well with the melancholic percolating beats. Television Days may be quirky, but it's also a rare glimpse into the state of mind and emotions of Clarian, who himself describes it as "a surreal self-examination of fears and mentalities after several nocturnal years of touring and producing music free to experiment and explore strange and fantastic worlds." Taking notes from the school of the tragic celebration, Television Days is a standout and unique record that both showcases an array of ambient sound techniques as it pays tribute to its love affair for new wave. In the words of Kevin Jones, "let's get deep, let's get rocked."

MOLECULE -22.7°C CD
Molecule returns with a new odyssey both physical and musical. Following the success of 60°43' Nord (BEC 5156067/5156476/5156477, 2015), his concept debut played, recorded, and mixed on a fishing boat during a 34-day journey in the Atlantic Ocean, the French producer decided this time to take the process further up north and embarked on a voyage to Greenland. Isolated for five weeks in the small Inuit village of Tiniteqilaaq, Romain Delahaye used his "survival electrokit" to find new sounds in the fjords, the icefields, and the hostile, yet dazzling landscapes surrounding him. Entirely recorded and mixed in this remote place, the tracks of -22.7°C range from contemplative ambient atmospheres to more upbeat techno blizzards and accurately translate this epic self-reflective adventure across a land of contrast, its abyssal silences, its immaculate glaciers and its blinding whiteness. With ten previously unheard tracks, -22.7°C is set to confirm Molecule's status as a one-of-a-kind producer in today's electro scene. CD version includes eight-page booklet.

VASSILIU, PIERRE Face B - 1965/1981 LP
LP version. Includes printed undersleeve, Pierre Vassiliu had always been reduced. Few were the real fans, who had explored all angles and taken the measure of the man. Maybe his rhymes weren't that rich, the instrumentation not too lush, the production quite laid-back, and the timbre rather little demanding, but you could be sure the song would be pampered. Because Vassiliu continuously tried to remodel his career, from a chansonnier to a cunning singer, from tender to comical, to a beatnik poet, to an ethno-artist, to a venue manager, to a showman, to a barfly. 1961: Pierre Vassiliu, a horse rider and a war photographer, embarks with his brother Michel (lyricist) in the music business. Their department: comedy. Lucky break, it works. Georges Brassens champions him and writes a few laudatory lines on his first 45 -- Vassiliu is launched. The sassy man sets to putting sweet songs on his singles, such as "Le Manège Désenchanté" on the B-side to Ivanohé in 1965. He also participates in the French-Brazilian adventure of Les Masques, with an album that has become a cult item thirty years later. Within a few weeks, it's in the bag: three 45s are released by Barclay, along with a first LP, Amour Amitié (1970), on which he appears sensitive and very forthcoming with stories about himself. This LP has little success, just like the following singles, including Marie En Provence (1974). No success either for the second album "Attends" (1972), either. He loses Barclay's trust and now only has the right to record singles, on a quest for a hit. Three more 45s and finally comes the supreme misunderstanding: "Qui C'est Celui-Là" (1973). Millions were sold, and the label improvises an album made up of the previous 45s. A dark period follows, during which he finds himself torn between the euphoria of success and its vanity, between the love he gets and the reasons given, between Paris and Provence, between his wife and other women. Marie, too often abandoned and sick of egocentricity, leaves for good; he flees to India, gets lost, reinvents himself and releases a series of three dark, light albums. After the 1980s, that was it. During the 1990s, his music takes a South-American direction. He hardly releases anything until 2003. Pierre Vassiliu dies from Parkinson's disease in 2015.

VOX LOW Vox Low CD
Enough with right-wing hedonist disco, let's put the Donna Summer records away and dig out Éliphas Lévi's big black book: Can, The Fall, or Peter Gabriel-era Genesis. This is a time for punk urgency, for depressed minimal krautrock, for the great shamanic hypnosis. This bunch of greasers from the Porte de St Ouen area now perform as Vox Low, with Jean-Christophe Couderc (vocals, synth) and Benoît Raymond (bass guitar, guitar, synth), later joined by Mathieu Autin (drums, percussions), and Guillaume Léglise (guitar, synths) for setting up live performances. Seeing the combo on stage is an act of faith, a celebration of dark forces. Far from lazy live performances on Ableton, Vox Low is like an acid-house version of the Jesus & Mary Chain on stage and now, after a few EPs and remixes, they turn up on an insolently rock n' roll label, Born Bad Records. They stylishly surf between '60s rockabilly influences and cold, minimal techno from around Cologne, or Berlin's Zoologischer Garten Station. These children of the court of the Crimson King, climb onto the tables, and piss on the silverware and hold a superb black mass for a bunch of hippies high on mandrax and dressed in rags and sheepskins. Vox Low manages to set a "sauerkraut" Morricone-rock atmosphere of its own, hypnotic and druggy. Krautrock with an inimitable '60s bass sound, a trippy discarnate voice combined with some Moe Tucker-style drumming. "You Are A Slave" is a punk, nihilist topic for a straightforward cold-as-a-razor-blade title. There are hits as well, such as "Something Is Wrong", their anthem for a jilted generation coming down from MDMA. A song like "Some Word Of Faith" places the record under the seal of the gospels, the holy scriptures, and Depeche Mode's Songs Of Faith And Devotion album (1993). Half muggy industrial, half leather rockabilly: like Frankie Goes To Hollywood covering Led Zeppelin. In "Rides Alone", Vox Low conjures up the suicided body of INXS' Michael Hutchence. With "Trapped On The Moon" and "Rejuvenation", the Parisians deliver a certain idea of modernity: a cardboard western feel à la Morricone, as goth as the Sisters Of Mercy, and VHS retro-futurism. Vox Low delivers a dark, poisonous, nihilist, and erudite piece of work for those who worship Primal Scream's Screamadelica (1991) and Gary Numan. TYNDALL Sonnenlicht CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Tyndall's debut album, Sonnenlicht, originally released in 1980 on Sky Records. The two electronic sonic inventors Jürgen Krehan and Rudolf Langer founded Tyndall in the year 1980, naming their duo after a light scattering phenomenon in physics. Armed with an impressive array of instruments, devices, and home-made synthesizers, they created free and easy electronic music in the style of the Berlin School (Berliner Schule), much to the liking of the legendary Sky Records who released their debut album. The Tyndall effect becomes visible, when light beams are deflected by microscopic particles in suspension. This explains the patterns of light we see when the sun shines through mist or fog for example. The very name of Tyndall evokes a bigger picture -- in the same way as celestial light was a common feature of canvasses in Romanticism and the Renaissance: a dramatic symbol for the overwhelming beauty of nature. Musically speaking, the album fits seamlessly into the Sky Records canon of the period. It nicely illustrates how synth pop sounded in those days: luxuriant indulgence in synthetic sounds, arpeggios, bass sequences, carefree melodies, accompanied and powered by synth escapades and a computer beat. Tyndall owned the very first CR-78 drum computer in Germany, provided by the manufacturer Roland before the official street date when they heard it was to be used on an LP recording. Today the CR-78 is regarded as a drum computer classic. The duo also deployed a formidable range of analog instruments: several semi-modular Roland System synthesizers, a Hohner String Melody String Machine, and electric pianos. This list also formed the basis of their live arsenal for the many concerts they played. Sonnenlicht reflects their cheerful, nonchalant journey into new territory. Sonic explorations and sweet melodies spread out over octave basses, delays, and arpeggio patterns. The musicians were not afraid to add layers of noise or effects -- albeit not quite to the same extent as they would on their next album, 1981's Traumland (BB 287CD/LP). This reissue marks the first CD issue of Sonnenlicht.

TYNDALL Traumland CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Tyndall's second album Traumland, originally released in 1981 on Sky Records. The electronic sonic inventors Tyndall pulled out all the stops for their second album. Armed with an impressive array of analog synthesizers, they unleashed the full force of their experimentalist ambitions, weaving synth pop, repetitive bass patterns, laminar sounds, and carefree melodies into a unique amalgam of the Düsseldorf and Berlin Schools. Traumland was released a year after their debut effort Sonnenlicht (BB 286CD/LP). As the title ("Dreamland") suggests, Jürgen Krehan and Rudolf Langer left the earthly realm behind to draw the listener into an almost surreal dream of cheerfully fluting miniatures, as alien as they are imaginative. Traumland is far more experimental than its predecessor, at times even recalling early works of Düsseldorf's synthesizer-pop exponents of the avant garde, Der Plan. Krehan and Langer shared a passion for creating their own electronic instruments, yet when it came to recording the second album, as on their debut, they supplemented the ones they had built with a considerable amount of purchased equipment. This growing arsenal now included several semi-modular Roland System synthesizers. Roland premiered the System 100 in 1975, acknowledged today as one of the very best sounding analog synthesizers, boasting the trademark Roland timbre. Aficionados tend to prefer the System 100 to its considerably more powerful successor the 100m on account of its warm, vibrant sound, and its excellent playing characteristics. The system was immensely popular with other bands in the electronic field such as Tangerine Dream and Depeche Mode. This massive analog synth armory can clearly be heard on Traumland. On many tracks, filtered basslines condense into a funky foundation of looping miniatures. Juicy drum sounds and strikingly hard synth sequences are coupled with saccharine organ and prancing flute sounds, countered by a noise generator or lost in a maelstrom of experimental echoes. This reissue marks the first CD issue of Traumland.

VA The Red Bird Story Vol. 1 2LP
Founded in 1964 by esteemed songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Red Bird Records may only have been operational for three years, but during that time the label became synonymous with the '60s girl group sound, particularly due to the success of The Shangri-Las and The Dixie Cups -- both of whom scored No.1 hits for Red Bird Records in its fledgling year. Rising Phoenix-like from earlier try-outs with Tiger (founded in 1962) and then Daisy (in 1963), Red Bird Records was unique among indie labels in that its output was of a consistently high standard and almost half of its releases made a commercial impact. The secret to Red Bird's "hit factory" lay in no small part with the chart-topping songwriting team of Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry, who had earlier penned hits for producer Phil Spector's Ronettes and Crystals. In the years prior to the British Invasion, the husband and wife team wrote prolifically for most of the label's biggest names, including the aforementioned Shangri-Las ("Leader Of The Pack" and "In The Streets') and Dixie Cups ("Chapel Of Love"), The Butterflys ("Goodnight Baby"), Sam Hawkins ("Hold On Baby"), The Ad Libs ("He Ain't No Angel"), and Andy Kim ("Hear You Say"), as well as occasionally recording in their own right. The Red Bird Story, split into two double-LP parts, draws together the best of Red Bird Records, along with tracks from its blue cat soul/R&B subsidiary and material from the short-lived Tiger and Daisy affiliates. Compiled and annotated by Roger Dopson, this compilation incorporates lesser-heard gems alongside the labels' major hits. 180 gram vinyl; DMM cut.Vol. 1 features Tippie & The Clovers, Cathy Saint, Moody & The Deltas, Leola & The Lovejoys, Bessie Banks, Dee Dee Warwick, The Dixie Cups, Alvin Robinson, Vic Donna, The Jelly Beans, Chi Chi Mcauley, The Rockaways, The Shangri-Las, The Butterflys, Barry Mann, Ellie Greenwich, The Ad-Libs, The Trade Winds, Roddie Joy, The Soul Brothers, and Jimmy Rice.

A diehard lover of authentic rock n' roll music, Ding Dong (real name Alain Pourquier) was France's leading rock n' roll dee-jay in the early Eighties when he produced an acclaimed series of 10" albums for Charly Records compiled from recordings made for Sam Phillips's legendary Sun label. Ding Dong then launched into another series of 12" albums for Charly, following the same formula that had been so successful in the 10" series. Rock And Roll Pills features Wade & Dick, Macy "Skip" Skipper, Jimmy Williams, Barbary Pittman, Carl McVoy, Jean Chapel, The Kirby Sister, and Maggie Sue Wimberly. On the Ding Dong series: For the series, he made visits to the hallowed Sun vaults in Memphis, Tennessee, where he listened to countless tapes, working his way through 1,228 outtake tape boxes and in the process selecting the best quality masters he could find. After listening to more than 11,000 tracks during February and March of 1983 and identifying a whole stack of unissued sides, he brought the master tapes back to England, where he embarked upon an amazing one-man re-issue program. 2012 release. The bulk of the recordings on this compilation were not originally released by Sun Records during its existence and several first appeared on Rockabilly Tunes. "Thinkin' Tonight Of My Blue Eyes" saw its first release on this album, as did Ray Harris's "Love Dumb Baby". The only song recorded on Sun containing the word "Rockabilly" was Hayden Thompson and Slim Rhodes's "Rockabilly Gal". Andy Anderson's "Johnny Valentine" and "Tough, Tough, Tough" saw their first release on this album and have since become iconic Sun recordings. Jimmy Wages did not have any of his Sun recordings issued until 1975. "Heartbreakin' Love" and "Take Me" were previously unissued, but their popularity was sufficient to bring Wages over to Britain to appear live. Tommy Ruick was another who never saw a release on Sun Records and his three sides on this album represent 75% of his Sun recordings. Narvel Felts, in common with a number of Sun artists, made the big time after leaving Sun, in his case in 1973. His recordings for the Memphis label remained unissued for some 20 odd years. The sleeve notes by Ding Dong give a vivid snapshot of Jerry Lee's activities during the period of the recordings on this album. Not only did he master all the recordings, he designed the sleeve artwork and wrote the sleeve notes. His excellent contacts amongst record collectors around the world enabled him to come up with a whole stack of rare artists' shots to use for the album artworks. The resulting albums, both various artists compilations and solo major artists, have over the years acquired iconic status and are now much sought after by fans of the ground-breaking Sun sound. Now lovingly restored, selected titles are being presented in their full original glory for today's vinyl buyers. They will be essential purchases not only for Ding Dong's fans seeking replacements for their worn-out original copies, but also for today's younger buyers discovering this exciting music for the first time. PERKINS, CARL Put Your Cat Clothes On LP
2012 release. Carl Perkins was the first artist to score a Top 10 rockabilly hit in the States. The first artist to chart in the pop, R&B, and country charts with the same record -- Blue Suede Shoes (1956). Major pioneer of rockabilly and rock n' roll whose guitar playing was an integral part of his success and who inspired George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Dave Edmunds, and countless other aspiring guitarists. A car crash on the way to New York to appear on the Perry Como Show, robbed Carl of national exposure and laid him up in hospital with multiple injuries when he should have been cashing in on the success of "Blue Suede Shoes". A successful song writer (he penned eight of the tracks on this release), he also wrote hits for the likes of Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, and The Judds. This release contains a previously unissued version of "Sweethearts Or Strangers". "Matchbox" is one of several of Carl's songs covered by the Beatles. "Put Your Cat Clothes On", a classic Perkins track that wasn't released until the 1970s, was covered by Brian Setzer of The Stray Cats. These sides, all recorded in 1957, highlight Carl at his finest, be it on country numbers like "Your True Love" or downhome rockers like "Dixie Fried" and "That's Right". Carl subsequently moved to Columbia Records but never quite recaptured the magic of his timeless Sun recordings. Put Your Cat Clothes On was compiled by France's leading deejay in the early '80s, Ding Dong (real name Alain Pourquier). On the Ding Dong series: For the series, he made visits to the hallowed Sun vaults in Memphis, Tennessee, where he listened to countless tapes, working his way through 1,228 outtake tape boxes and in the process selecting the best quality masters he could find. ORBISON, ROY Roy Orbison And The Teen Kings LP
2012 release. After recording on the Je-Wel label in Texas, Roy Orbison and his band The Teen Kings came to Memphis in the Spring of 1956. Orbison continued recording for Sun through to 1958, but he couldn't replicate the success of his first release, "Ooby Dooby", which reached the lower half of the Hot 100 and selling over 350,000 copies. After leaving Sun, Roy signed with RCA but met with no commercial success until he moved to Fred Foster's Monument label, and struck gold with "Only The Lonely", backed by "Go Go Go". Between 1960-1965 he notched up 21 hits before switching to MGM and scoring seven more hits in the next two years. He topped the UK charts three times and charted 33 times. Roy came back to international prominence as a member of The Travelling Wilburys before resuming his solo recording career on Virgin. He returned to the charts after a gap of 20 years in 1989 and charted six times up until 1993, despite his premature death in 1988. This album contains the original undubbed versions of "Tryin' To Get To You", "Problem Child", "You're Gonna Cry", "Mean Little Mama", and "This Kind Of Love". It also contains the first recording of "I Was A Fool" that features Roy and Hayden Thompson on vocals. The version of "Problem Child" included here is without sax overdub. THOMPSON, LINVAL Cool Down LP
2018 repress. Channel One recordings from 1974-6. With Robbie Shakespeare, "Chinner" Smith, Tony Chin, Ossie Hibbert, Agustus Pablo, Tommy McCook, etc. "Bunny Lee's 'flying cymbal' production dominates the session and consequently the listener might recognize several of these cuts from dub compilations on Blood & Fire. Generally speaking, though, this is not a dub record. Only the last song on each side is followed by a dub version. These are straight-ahead rockers with no frills and, depending on the pressing, rather muddy production. It is also worth mentioning that 'Money Money' and 'Blood Gonna Run,' among others, find Robbie Shakespeare at his slippery and infectious best. Serious basslines throughout." -- AMG.

ALLEN, TONY Black Voices 2LP
Comet presents a reissue of Tony Allen's Black Voices, originally released in 1999. This reissue features remastered versions and "Ariya (Psychedelic Juju Mix)" as a bonus track, which was not part of the original release. Tony Allen completely rewrote the books on what was possible within the Afrobeat genre with his stunning 1999 album, Black Voices. When one considers exactly "what" is going on throughout Black Voices, it is quite mind boggling, as it is almost impossible to associate a minimalist, electronic feel with the massive walls-of-sound which Allen was known to create. Yet these walls-of-sound are still very present, yet they gain an entirely new feel due to the presence of the producer, Doctor L. He takes the mesmerizing rhythms that Allen creates and he spins them into a stunningly modern sound. While Doctor L's production work throughout Black Voices is truly fantastic, it is clear that the genius behind the album lies within the mind of Tony Allen. With the absolutely mesmerizing, funky grooves that Allen creates, it comes as little surprise that the vocal collaborations are handled by members of one of the funkiest bands in history: Parliament-Funkadelic. For almost two decades, Black Voices has remained a stunning example of the fantastic results that can occur when seemingly unrelated genres clash.

MARSMOBIL Fairytales Of The Supersurvivor CD
The fifth album from Marsmobil has been hailed by many as their best yet. With closer ties to Minx (2006) than their last two albums, Fairytales Of The Supersurvivor returns to Marsmobil's signature strength of wondrously brilliant songs ("And The Fishes In The Ocean", "Shadows Of The Inner Light") that blend off-the-wall cinemascope sounds with dazzling beats and punchy, powerful hooks to create uniquely distinctive art pop anthems. As always with Marsmobil, Roberto Di Gioia writes, plays, sings and programs everything himself. Here, as on Minx, he's brought in support from a fabulous singer -- the very wonderful Amber Lin, who contributes vocals on four songs. Art pop meets Mongolian throat singing, Blade Runner meets Walter Carlos's A Clockwork Orange soundtrack (1972), Tom Dissevelt and Kid Baltan (David Bowie's favorite band) meet Tame Impala. Multi-instrumentalist Roberto Di Gioia needs little introduction. The curious can explore his biography, discography, and extensive lists of projects and collaborations as musician and songwriter for an impression of the hugely diverse achievements of this multi-talent and brilliant musician. As a topical heads-up, Roberto Di Gioia is also the founder of the German jazz supergroup Web Web and released the album Oracle with the group in September of 2017 (COMP 499CD/LP). Di Gioia also wrote and produced Teufelswerk for DJ Hell (GIGOLO 250CD/LP, 2009) and contributed virtually all the songs on Hell's latest album, Zukunftsmusik (GIGOLO 302CD/LP/X-LP, 2017). KALKBRENNER, FRITZ Drown 2LP
Double LP version. Fritz Kalkbrenner's fifth album marks a new chapter. It is the first of his albums not to feature his vocals. Freeing himself from the song approach with which he first made a name for himself, he is now focusing on the pure sound of the house music that he discovered as a young man in the Berlin club scene. With hit singles such as "Get A Life" or "Back Home", Fritz Kalkbrenner has played a part in forming our modern understanding of electronic music today. After Sky And Sand alongside his brother Paul (BPCWL 002EP, 2010) as well as four successful albums, two of which reached the Top 10 of the German album charts, Fritz Kalkbrenner is now heading in a different musical direction. In the spring of 2017, Fritz dusted off his old drum machines and his Jupiter 8 and immersed himself in the sounds that first brought him to electronic music twenty years ago and which were to form the basis for his present album Drown. At the beginning of his career it was about establishing himself through a new approach for Fritz. Now it is about celebrating those sounds and their liberating effect on our consciousness. The focus is electronic music as Fritz Kalkbrenner first got to know it in the German capital's now legendary techno and house clubs as an impressionable young man. The cut, that leaving out the now so familiar baritone voice represents, opens the door to a whole world of electronic music, which is suitable for home listening as well as for the club. There are no confining conventions on these 12 tracks and at times one could also say no restraint. Fritz Kalkbrenner indulges in his fascination for dub techno, in clear and dominant house arrangements and also in anthemic melodies. Fritz underlines this new beginning, which is at the same time a reflection on his own beginnings and his own origins, by choosing not to appear on the album's artwork himself this time. Cover art is the work of Fritz's grandfather, the famous East German painter Fritz Eisel -- its title is "Winterabend (winter evening) in M." and it was created in 1990, when Fritz was nine years old.

PEOPLE LIKE US/MATMOS/WOBBLY Wide Open Spaces LP
Originally released on CD in 2003. The hour-long performance on this disc was captured live on October 5th, 2002 when Wobbly, People Like Us, and Matmos circled their wagons in the lecture hall of the San Francisco Art Institute. Having mutually agreed upon a country and western theme, Vicki Bennett (People Like Us), Jon Leidecker (Wobbly), and Drew Daniel and M. C. Schmidt (Matmos) pored over their archives of honky tonk classics, chopping and dicing Nashville's finest almost beyond recognition, and collectively restitching the mangled shreds in a kind of crazed digital quilting bee. Flickering and tranquil one moment, and wildly slap-stick the next, Wide Open Spaces hits the sweet spot between song forms and improvisation, and showcases the qualities that all three collaborating artists share: absurdist humor, baroque sample manipulation, and stuttering rhythmic frameworks that lurch and sway. While the presence of five samplers, four laptops, three CD players, and a pedal steel guitar on one stage could have led to a tediously ego-driven "jam" or simply cacophony, the results feel lushly detailed but not cluttered, and swing naturally between structure and freedom. Listening back to the recorded results, all three musical units agreed that this concert was mighty fine, and worth sharing. Originally released on Tigerbeat6 in 2003, the music has been re-mastered for this vinyl issue. Artwork by M.C. Schmidt; Design and layout by Vicki Bennett.

OVAL LANGUAGE, THE Hibernation LP
The Oval Language is an autonomous art project founded in 1987 in Leipzig, East Germany, by Klaus-Peter John and Frank Berendt, and continued to this day by John. Its fields of activity are multifaceted and have included sound-noise performances, conceptual works in open spaces, installations, land art projects, photography, etc. The Oval Language has collaborated extensively with various artists, among others Nicolai Angelov, Koyo Axel Guhlmann, and Guido Hübner of Das Synthetische Mischgewebe. Around 1991, the then members of the group -- John, Berendt, and Peter Schüler -- were exploring the irrational impact of the Monument to the Battle of the Nations (Völkerschlachtdenkmal) near Leipzig and presented the tri-media project Hibernation, based around their attempts at approaching the undercurrents that are conserved within the imagery associated with the monument. Hibernation comprised live performances at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, HGB) and at the Museum of Ethnography, an event sculpture in front of the monument which involved the burning of large amounts of straw, and an installation at the briquette factory Zechau near Altenburg. The Oval Language on the project: "Hibernation is about the Monument to the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig. We don't look at it through the historical prism of the 1813 Battle of the Nations, though. We are concerned with the monument as a Gesamtkunstwerk, as a manifestation of irrational German thinking in previous times and its impact on today's generation." This LP reproduces the sound layer of Hibernation and includes a recording of a live performance at the HGB, made in 1991. Printed inner sleeve with photos of each stage of the project and texts; Edition of 300.

TONALIENS Tonaliens 2LP
Tonaliens is a Berlin-based group investigating the inner dimensions and outer limits of just intonation. It was formed in 2014 by Amelia Cuni (voice), Werner Durand (invented wind instruments), Robin Hayward (microtonal tuba), Hilary Jeffery (trombone), and Ralf Meinz (live sound, electronics). The group came together shortly after the release of the software version of the Hayward Tuning Vine, an interface for exploring microtonal tuning that allows for direct and intuitive interaction with the pitches normally hidden between the keys of the piano. Coming from diverse backgrounds, the musicians were eager to explore this harmonic space, and thus the tuning vine, as Hayward put it "acted first as a catalyst, then as a map, and finally as a spaceship" that enabled them to navigate those areas that largely remain obscured. The music of Tonaliens has so far been focused on a very specific area within the microtonal space that was discovered by mapping out the first three harmonics of three tubes of Durand's self-invented Pan-Ney instrument. They named this area the Tonaliens chord, and both recordings on this double LP -- two live performances from 2015 -- are based on it. Sides A and B are recorded live in a church in Amsterdam, the Vondelkerk, during the Sonic Acts Festival. Sides C and D contain a contrasting, more intimate performance made at KuLe in Berlin for the Labor Sonor concert series. Amelia Cuni appears only on the Amsterdam recording. Full-color gatefold sleeve with liner notes by Robin Hayward, and detailed photos and screenshots; Black poly-lined inner sleeves; Edition of 300.

JUNG AN TAGEN Agent Im Objekt LP
Jung An Tagen is practicing sonic animism on a molecular level. With Agent Im Objekt he confronts his listeners once more with a form of highly abstracted electronic music -- puristic club sounds for an accelerated future. Kicking off with an accumulation of high-pitched, psychoactive sounds, Agent Im Objekt takes you into a hyperreal sphere reigned by sonic entities. Playing with swarm-dynamics and singular signals, moments of distance and proximity and noise textures that stimulate perception, Jung An Tagen transgresses the common syntax of club music. His strategies resemble computer music composition and focus on timbre, texture, and structure in an almost analytical way. The sounds filtered from his synthesizer are polished and bright, but behave in an astonishingly organic way, forming propulsive melodic sketches. Arranged in multiple layers of versatile polyrhythms, the tracks are nurtured by the forceful dialectics of precisely arranged chaos and ecstatic order. With his titles, Jung An Tagen is further adding an enigmatic narrative to his tracks, transcending the actual sphere of the dancefloor towards fictional storytelling. Following the structure of a one-sided chat log, they evoke associations from the X-file series or mystery novels, revealing a brainteaser that is drawn from mysterious coordinates and secret codes. In addition the official video "20:03 [Y] HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?" underlines Jung An Tagen's interdisciplinary interest in synesthetic processes. Developed in collaboration with the programmers JeongHo Park and Scott Sinclair the video visualizes particle explosion data from CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Inspired by Peter Kubelkas's Arnulf Rainer (1960), the resulting geometric figures are exposed to a "complimentary stroboscope" that glitches your receptors and stimulate your brainwaves with photo- and EEG-stimulation close to seizure, inducing a hallucinative reality. Agent Im Objekt is playful but analytical, uplifting but mentally disturbed. While the dynamic use of reoccurring motives forces your body to move, cerebral timbres provoke a series of stimuli to massage your brain. It is intellectual body music that might mark a poetic turn in progressive dance music. Composed, recorded, and mixed by Jung An Tagen in the VIV. Titles by Stefan Juster. Artwork and layout by J. Fröhnel. Mastered by Rashad Becker.

SHIPP, MATTHEW Zero 2CD
In the first part of his career, Matthew Shipp avoided solo recordings, saying he wasn't ready -- and the first solo album he made, Symbol Systems (1995), happened by accident when the other player on the session didn't show up. Since then, his style expanded and matured and he recorded prolifically, including a number of solo albums, but they have remained special events, distinct statements of purpose. Zero continues in this tradition; its philosophical basis can be gleaned from the lecture on the bonus CD. But, of course, it is the music itself which speaks most eloquently. Please note that the tune titled "Zero" is not the same as a previous Shipp composition of the same title. Only the first of this album (an edition of 1000) will include the bonus CD containing the talk Mr. Shipp gave at The Stone. Liner notes by Steve Dalachinsky.

WEISMAN, CHRIS Chaos Isn't Single LP
"The eighth Feeding Tube LP by Chris Weisman vinylizes a 2015 CDR originally released by Hidden Temple Tapes. Weisman is, as always, the master of his own domain. Crafting pop tunes worthy of any sophisticated pen you can name (from Nilsson to Beck), his presentation this time is starker than usual. Lots of strummed guitar and shadows of other tastes lurking in the distance. As on his last LP, Play Sharp to Me (FTR 234LP), Chris seems to have added blue notes and hints of discord to his sweet surges. A certain jazziness from that session persists as well, giving the songs here a lilting swing that makes their hooks all the more dangerous. At times the songs almost have the feel of a 'guilty pleasure' (ala late Todd Rundgren or early Shins), but forget the guilt. This is the sound of the Upper Valley Underground at its finest. You can listen to it all you want. Even bob your head approvingly, and no one will be able to say you're anything but up-to-date as hell. In that sense, Chris Weisman has always been a thinking person's alternative to lots of stuff. Of course, that will all change when he gets heaped the praise his songs so richly deserve. But that's no reason to not get out ahead of the pack. And once you've figured out how much you love Chaos Isn't Single, don't forget to check out his back catalog. It's richer and fatter than Johnny Depp's ass." --Byron Coley, 2017 Edition of 300.

DOOZER, THE Figurines LP
"Brilliant sixth album by The Doozer demonstrates that while you can take the boy out of Cambridge, it ain't easy to do the obverse. The results are twelve inches of splendidly psych-soaked pop readymades laced with tendrils of Syd Barrett, Chris Knox, Pip Proud and early Nick Nicely. Because he has been crafting just this sort of thing for over a decade now, it shouldn't take so much name-checking to place The Doozer inside his aesthetic continuum. But even after wonderful LPs on labels like Pickled Egg, Siltbreeze, Golden Lab, Woodsist and elsewhere, too damn many people still haven't grasped this music the way it deserves. Why this is the case is perplexing. On his own records (and also as a frequent UK participant in the MVEE caravan), The Doozer has always shown himself to be a dab hand with both melodic construction, as well as with sound generation using keys and strings of all sorts. For his live sets, just as on his records, Mr. The Doozer creates an enveloping blanket of sound and image that is as comforting as it is weird and artful. Like those legends I mentioned earlier, The Doozer has a wonderfully original way of creating sunny sounds, smeared at the edge of their event horizons so that they seem more like aural hallucinations. Like the aforementioned he also has the ability to craft pop hooks in a manner that makes them feel simultaneously new and deeply familiar. Figurines is an album that sounds great the first time you play it, and loses none of its pleasure on its fiftieth spin. Truly a record for the ages, and a classic 'late night spin' if ever there was one." --Byron Coley, 2017 Edition of 300.

"Midnight (Flute Riddim)" is softer and slinkier, built for smoldering club action. On his remix of "808", BSNYEA focuses on the whistles and gutter synth lines. LP version. Heavy Psych Sounds present a reissue of Nebula's Let It Burn, originally released in 1998. Along with Queens of the Stone Age and Eternal Elysium, Nebula were one of the most pleasant surprises in the stoner rock movement. To call them another stoner rock band is an injustice to their versatility and dynamism. Nebula experiments with different types of sounds, including the raga piece "Raga In The Bloodshot Pyramid". Arguably one of the best white-played ragas, besides the Northwood Improvisers' phenomenal Star Garden, the song offers a refreshing change from the average fuzz-infested rock tune. The guitars are brash, loud, covered in mud, and loaded with crotch-kickin' feedback. The interplay of the drums and bass and the extended guitar jam on the aptly titled "Sonic Titan" is one of several highlights on Let It Burn. There is no dead weight here. This is especially true of the bonus tracks, which include the rawest, most brilliant song on the album, "Devil's Liquid". If you are a fan of the genre, or just Fu Manchu, then put down your bong and Black Sabbath vinyl long enough to go out and find yourself this masterpiece. The first six songs were recorded at Rancho de la Luna, Joshua Tree, CA May 1997, engineered by Fred Drake and mastered by John Golden. VA The Roundup Part IV 2x12"
Listen to this if you want to hear 2017's best tracks on Heist Recordings by Detroit Swindle, Alma Negra, Fouk, Nachtbraker, Nebraska, and Parker Madicine in one big remix package. The Roundup Part IV marks the end of year four of Heist Recordings and it might be their most varied release yet with some serious Afro funk from Switzerland, electronic soul from Italy, proper old school deep house from the UK, and some Dutch guys adding a bit of swing to the package. For those unfamiliar with the label's annual concept release, The Roundup is a release where each artist that has released in the year gets remixed by another Heist artist from that same year. The label put all the names in a big hat, and draw straws. The result: six different remixes from six of the most intriguing original tracks of the year. Fouk had the honor to rework one of the most euphoric tracks ever to come out on Heist Recordings and certainly one of Nachtbraker's most party-oriented tracks ever: "Hamdi". They flipped the original into a Rhodes-y Afro-tinged jam filled with lovely bleeps, FX, and some great work on the keys. The Detroit Swindle remix of Parker Madicine's "Heartbreaker" is just as dreamy as it is driving, making full use of their synth-cave with an ever-evolving Moog bassline and some great pads on the Arp Odyssey. Alma Negra's "Blacksoul" remix of Nebraska's "Big Plate Chicken" takes the full B side and rightly so. The African drums and chants along with the looped sampling of the original's bleeps give a great groove, but the track really comes alive when the bassline kicks in. The second 12" gives room for Nachtbraker's "Swing" mix of "Can't Hold It" where he lets loose a trippy, sample heavy track with a dustier ambience than your grandmother's living room. Turn it over and you'll find Parker Madicine jazzing up "Afrorleans" and Nebraska throwing in a classic deep house touch on his remix for Fouk. All and all, this is a greatly diverse, sexy, and club-ready package. 180 gram vinyl.

EXORCIST GBG, THE II LP
A lot of bands are trying what The Exorcist GBG are doing, to make timeless, mind-bending dance music, but they often fail in reaching all the way. The members who also can be found in Uran, Tentakel, and Sork among others, formed The Exorcist in 2012 and started by playing illegal techno clubs for the true undercurrent citizens of Gothenburg, Sweden. The reputation of this dangerous psychedelic band who plays funk the way funk should be played soon reached Stockholm where they got a cult following just by word of mouth. Over the past four years their following has grown exponentially. The recording of II was a trip into the abyss and back, with a lot of time and money spent, outrage from the members and record label executives biting their nails down to the bone. But that is how The Exorcist works -- tension is a vital part of this bands nature, hence its sound. The tracks' aggressive approach and the feeling of being possessed by something evil lurking inside of you mirrors the process of making this album.

GODFLESH Post Self Cassette
Repressed. Post Self is simultaneously inventive and classic Godflesh. The blue and icy atmosphere of Post Self can reach levels touched on in the happenings of early '90s Norway innovations. From the opening track, it's clear that the vocal performance is Justin Broadrick's best in ages, utilizing new approaches ranging from higher tortured screams to truly brutal and barbaric low roars not heard since Streetcleaner (1989). Within those extremes, mystically effected vocals coming from an industrial corner support the classic "post punk" style voice that became a hallmark dating all the way back to "Head Of David" as well as the bonus tracks heard on the Streetcleaner CD version and the ultimate hypnotic Godflesh track "Flowers". Throughout the whole of the record is a pervasive cold that settles into the atmosphere of Post Self under which nasty and vile machine rhythms create an '80s nighttime rainy streets groove. Dark, hard, heartbreaking, and beautiful, Post Self feels like the culmination of all of Broadrick's various musical interests and achievements in his 30 years of dedication to subcultural music: industrial, noise, post punk, ambient, extreme metal, bass music, and more-- but it is also quintessential Godflesh in its monumental and timeless feeling of existentialism and the human condition. A World Lit Only By Fire (2014) was Godflesh's mortal return, but Post Self feels like Godflesh's immortal soul. Cassette with foil stamped cover.

ELODIE Vieux Silence LP
2018 repress; LP version. Stephen O'Malley on Elodie, the project of Andrew Chalk and Timo van Luijk, and their album Vieux Silence: "Having been entranced by both Andrew Chalk's work with Mirror (and back to his solo works as Ferial Confine, plus multiple collaborations with David Jackman, The New Blockaders, Daisuke Suzuki, etc.), and Timo van Luijk (as Af Ursin, In Camera, La Poupée Vivante, and collaborations with Kris Vanderstraeten and others) for many years, I was naturally intrigued to hear about and hear their duo project Elodie. The project formed in 2010, and has spanned eleven beautiful albums already, to date. Vieux Silence for Ideologic Organ is their first release presented outside of their own record publishing nook, Faraway Press and La Scie Dorée. However this is not the first encounter between Ideologic Organ and Elodie, they performed at a night in London I curated in February 2012, alongside Jessika Kenney and Eyvind Kang. Elodie's performance was among the most delicately engaging and savant I have witnessed... so very quiet, with snow falling in London outside Cafe Oto's windows, the audience palpably entered a high intensity listening focus. The impression of this vivid memory is striking, considering how spare each of the individual elements present that night were. Vieux Silence, and Elodie in general, provoke a visual imagination in an instant, perhaps filtered through aged watercolor, tape grain, antique lenses, forgotten levels of listening, and observational patience. On this gorgeous album, Chalk and van Luijk also collaborate with piano, pedal steel, and clarinet (played by: Tom James Scott, Daniel Morris, and Jean-Noel Rebilly, respectively). Each detail carefully considered and coloring step-by-step, like an impressionist watercolor." Personnel: Tom James Scott - piano; Jean-Noël Rebilly - clarinet; Daniel Morris - guitar pedal steel. VA Golpea Tu Cerebro, Spanish Underground Cassette Culture, 1980-1988 2LP BOX
Golpea Tu Cerebro ("Shake Your Brain") is the first ever vinyl compilation dedicated to the unknown yet fascinating Spanish underground cassette scene from the '80s. During the early to mid-80s, with few resources but unlimited imagination, some people all across Spain (some of them very young) started recording at home their experimental, noise, electronic, and industrial cassettes. They were influenced by DIY, futurism, dada, mail-art as well as by the early industrial bands (Throbbing Gristle, Whitehouse, Nurse With Wound, SPK, Cabaret Voltaire, NON, Esplendor Geométrico, etc), which were championed in Spain thanks to adventurous radio shows, fanzines, and mail order catalogues selling imported and domestic albums and cassettes. This was probably the first DIY and truly independent music scene in Spain. The dark side of the "Movida" -- Individualism and avant-gardism in opposition to superficiality and emptiness. Most of these projects were just one-man operations or collectives created by friends: underground tape labels like ä.d.n, El Consumo Del Miedo, Auxilio de Cientos, S.T.I., Obreros del Sonido, Toracic Tapes, 3EM, and fanzines like Cloruro Sónico, Necronomicon, Particular Motors, Syntorama, El Papel de la Merienda. They released their cassettes in limited homemade editions and there were lot of exchanges with other creators and participations in compilation cassettes from worldwide labels within the International Tape Network. On this compilation, you'll find legendary names like La Otra Cara De Un Jardín, Comando Bruno, Línea Táctica, Francisco López, Uvegraf, Ética Makinal, L'akstremaunçió, Neo Zelanda, Interacción, Técnica Material, Físodo 13.4, along with obscurities like El Enterrador Enterrado, 1985, Zumbi-2, Brigada Nadie, and more. Including tracks originally released on rare cassettes and compilations along with a few previously unreleased ones. Sound taken from the original cassettes/reel-to reels and remastered by Ángel Álvarez (Linneo Dos). Primitive harsh noise; dark electronics; wild tape manipulation; electroacoustic noise, extreme sound art and just homemade weirdness. Also features Bulbo Raquídeo, El Punto De Vista Operativo, Félix Menkar, C-307, Quaxar, Zussamenwachsen, Polídrico, Iéximal Jélimite, Septiembre Negro, El Coleccionista De Poliedros, and Oh-Casio-Ón. KUF Universe 2x12"
2x12" version. KUF create emotion-laden dialogues across layers of time and dimensions of sound. Voices recorded in private are chopped up and brought out center-stage to sing with beats hammered out right here and now. Glowing synths push forward. Basslines rise to grab the melodic role of a track while a vowel is truncated and locked into a grid, driving the rhythm. Voices move within the frame of a sample, performed by hands pushing keys, guided by the ear, immersed in a trio session's deep flow... A vortex of quirky hands, responsive ears and glowing circuits. Since Thomas A. Edison first recorded the human voice in 1877, the recording arts have changed music forever. Musicians have explored the endless possibilities of bouncing their input onto layers of tape, off the walls of an echo chamber or the circuitry of electronic helpers -- technology that modulates, spatializes, shifts, divides, or multiplies the work of human hands and mouths. An era of sampling offered a cubistic analysis of the recorded past and DJs took dancers onto intricately fractured time travels. This is the historic foundation that KUF keep probing. Just like the sampler and the DJ before them, they found new ways to re-allocate where machine and man stand when making music together. Most importantly, they turn the resulting friction into sparkling bursts of energy. Universe digs deeper into the android vocal chords. The album offers sweeping melodies, different beats, and persistent bass. Immerse in the intimacy of the voices, probably recorded in trains, backstage areas, and at late night private parties during Berlin Lichtenberg warehouse rehearsals. By striking the keys, KUF squeeze out and serve up all the soul accumulated in those savory phonetic shreds. Wood striking metal, thick bass strings moving air, oscillators humming eagerly. Physical and electrical, alive and stunningly beautiful -- after a year well spent in smoky clubs, on festival stages and in extensive nocturnal sessions, KUF deliver chapter two of their unfolding saga.

The film was actually shot after Klaus Schulze's score. He got the script and on the basis of the script, he wrote the music. Director Kragl told him, 'You can write the music as you like -- just stick to the script! I will cut the film to the music, not adapting the music to the film.' Normally, the music takes its cue from the film but in this case it was the other way around. So Klaus had a lot of freedom and could compose real songs. THOMPSON BAND, RICHARD Live At Rockpalast 2LP
"Richard Thompson, the pioneer of British folk rock was voted one of the best guitarists of all time by US magazine The Rolling Stone: 'His acoustic picking is just as killer' they wrote. In 1983, Thompson went on tour to promote his current album Hand Of Kindness. For the show on December 12, 1983, at the Hamburg Markthalle the WDR also put up their cameras to record the event for the Rockpalast. The studio crew from the recording sessions of Hand Of Kindness was also present live. Among them three musicians who stood on stage with Thompson with Fairport Convention more than ten years before: Simon Nicol, Dave Pegg and Dave Mattacks. Nearly seven weeks later, on January 26, 1984 Richard Thompson & Band gave another concert in the French luxury resort Cannes on occasion of Midem being recorded by the WDR as well. Gerry Conway, today the drummer with the still active folk rock institution Fairport Convention, replaced Dave Mattacks, Rory McFarlane (bass) came for Dave Pegg who had to go into the studio to record a new album with his band Jethro Tull. In both concerts it is to be heard how well the musicians know each other and how they have been harmonizing for years. They are building an integrated whole with Richard Thompson. They carry the music of their 'boss' and give him the lightness and the leeway to fully unfold his potential. Both concerts are an absolute must for every Thompson fan."

WATERS, MUDDY Live At Rockpalast 2LP
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. "Muddy Waters had a great ear for talent and accordingly the formation which you will hear on this DVD was one of the very best: The pianist Pinetop, the drummer Willie 'Big Eyes' Smith, the bass player Calvin Jones, the two guitarists Luther 'Guitar Jr.' Johnson and Bob Margolin and the harmonica player Jerry Portnoy. At the Rockpalast recording on December 10, 1978 at Westfalenhalle Dortmund Muddy Waters still was at the height of his creative power, his mighty vocals and his splendid charisma on stage fascinated the audience. Muddy's guitar playing on the Fender Telecaster especially comes into full effect with his typical slow blues solos -- and seldom had Muddy such a hot sound as in this TV recording of the WDR. The song selection of the evening consisted of several of his biggest hits which probably are standard discipline of each evening ('Hoochie Coochie Man', 'Walkin' Thru The Park', a superb version of the macho hymn 'Mannish Boy' and, of course, the immortal 'Got My Mojo Workin''), but also less performed titles like 'Soon Forgotten' by St. Louis Jimmy Oden or 'Country Boy', both atmospheric slow blues with slide. When the Muddy Waters Tribute Band appeared at the Rockpalast Open-Air at the Loreley on June 23, 1996 (bonus content on the second DVD), the pianist Pinetop Perkins could unfortunately not travel due to medical reasons and Jerry Portnoy was replaced by blues harper Carey Bell who had already played in Muddy's band in early 1970. All band members switch with the vocals and in 'Gone To Main Street' The Band's Levon Helm is to be heard as a guest singer. Naturally, the repertoire consists mainly of Muddy Waters classics but also songs of Jimmy Reed, two titles that have become known through Albert King and one original composition of the drummer Willie Smith were on the set list."

VA Waves Of The Future 2LP
The modern synth wave scene would be significantly poorer without the keen ear and tireless efforts of Mannequin Records, run by Alessandro Adriani. Geographically situated within the nerve centers of Rome and Berlin, yet with a musical spirit that easily transcends these boundary lines, Mannequin Records' back catalog has been an important component in electronics-based independent music in the 21st century. Recent accolades and accomplishments -- being named Resident Advisor's "Label Of The Month" in May of 2017, starting the Death Of The Machines 12" series, and being given the "green light" for bi-monthly parties at the Säule room in Berghain -- have been earned through Mannequin Records' unflagging commitment to sonic diversity and Adriani's own realization that the anxious and sharp-edged sounds associated with, say, the Cold War of the 1980s can convey a completely different message today. Mannequin Records continues to go on exploratory missions to find the best and most relevant aspects of genres like acid, industrial, EBM, post-punk, cold wave, and still more. Mannequin Records' 100th release, Waves Of The Future, is a double-LP compilation which is not a conventional retrospective collection. None of the artists appearing on this collection have put out their own releases on Mannequin Records yet, despite acting as Mannequin's unofficial ambassadors (via DJ sets and other means). The set includes other scene leaders and label owners including Beau Wanzer, Willie Burns, Silent Servant, and Ron Morelli. Waves Of The Future projects a sense of aesthetic resilience and continuity; showcasing just how well the current artists allied with Mannequin Records employ and re-interpret the sonic lexicon of the label's reissues of "classic'" acts. Each track here pivots around a couple of key sound elements that seem to set the stage for the next track to come: see the sputtering/chopped ghost voices on Morelli's "Charges Won't Stick", which easily informs the slicing drone and authoritarian beat of Shawn O' Sullivan's "Ill Fit", which then lays down the emotional foundation for the sequencer-powered "With You" from An-I and Adriani or the glassy landscape of Illum Sphere's "Exhaustion". Elsewhere, the wired mischief of Not Waving intersects easily with the spherical electro-funk and coded commands of Beau Wanzer. When all the disparate parts of Waves Of The Future are soldered together, it perfectly illustrates Mannequin Records' non-linear philosophy and Adriani's suggestion that listeners engage with the music rather than try to analyze or dissect it.

MF DOOM Operation: Doomsday (7" Box Set) 7x7" Box
"As the '90s came to a close, hip-hop music was thriving in two separate ecosystems. On one side, Puffy's Bad Boy Records, Roc-A-Fella and the rest of the major label world was pumping plenty of shiny music by bling-ed out, made for MTV stars. These pop stars sold truckloads, but it felt like a lot of 'empty calories.' On the other side of the coin, a very strong underground scene had emerged in the mid-1990s worldwide. Hungry, innovative artists who had no use for the major label system thrived artistically in this ever-growing pond, ranging from Dr. Octagon and Jurassic 5 in Cali, Atmosphere and the Rhymesayers crew in the Midwest, and Company Flow and Definitive Jux in the East, among others. As the decade closed, from somewhere even beyond both of those poles, a man who would come to rule many corners the underground universe for the next two decades appeared from depths that were darker than most of his fans would ever know: MF DOOM. The artist formerly known as Zev Love X of major-label-but-underground heroes KMD had disappeared from most fans' view in around 1994 -- after his brother and artistic co-producer Subroc was killed, and the group's Black Bastards album was shelved by Elektra. By 1997, DOOM started peeking his head up from the grime, with no-distribution singles on Bobbito Garcia's Fondle 'Em label like 'Red & Gold' and 'Dead Bent.' As other appearances and singles trickled through the underground, by 1999 the album Operation: Doomsday appeared seemingly out of nowhere, again on Fondle 'Em, and fans who actively ran from the glitzier side of rap music ate it up like they had been on a hunger strike. Musically raw and at-times off-kilter, former Fondle 'Em singles like the aforementioned tunes plus 'Gas Drawls,' 'Hey!' and 'Go With The Flow' were joined by a whole slew of new tunes. It all sounded familiar but new at the same time. It shouldn't be overlooked that in addition to the dusty, wobbling music, the former Zev Love X completely changed up his vocal style on the tracks that would land on Doomsday, chopping his flow up and bringing a whole new approach to his formerly liquid, and often humorous lyricism. Standouts on this bonafide underground masterwork are honestly hard to pick, since fans each have their own DOOM faves. But 'Doomsday,' 'Rhymes Like Dimes,' 'The MIC,' the experimental 'Tick, Tick...' (with MF Grimm) and 'Red & Gold' (with King Ghidra) are great examples of how stretched-out this visionary album is. This new 7-Inch collection edition via Get On Down includes seven 7-inches that run in order of the songs from the original issue (including interludes). The records are housed in a custom black leatherette outer-box that is laced with silver-foil renderings of DOOM's legendary mask and bubble graffiti logo on the outside, and a never-seen-before DOOM drawing by the legendary Lord Scotch, the original artist behind the Operation: Doomsday art, on the inside. In addition to holding the 7-inch vinyl, the box also contains two metallic-silver colored 45 adapters, each a 3D rendering of DOOM's gladiator mask. Picture sleeves for each of the seven pieces of wax all feature brand new work by Lord Scotch (Blake Lethem aka KEO aka Scotch79th) as well: new hand-lettered track listings on one side, and incredible new color illustrations on the flip that, when laid side-by-side, fit together like puzzle pieces, to form one large image."

EL SHAZLY, NADAH Ahwar (Clear Vinyl) LP
Clear vinyl version. Nawa Recordings present Ahwar, the debut album by Nadah El Shazly. Starting out singing Misfits covers in a local punk band, then moving on to producing her own electronic tracks and making a name for herself in Cairo's underground scene, Nadah El Shazly's backstory is not that unusual. Her debut album on the other hand, is an entirely unexpected story. Two years in the making, Ahwar (Arabic for "marshlands") is an otherworldly record, not unlike an abstract mythological story-tale. Opening with the mangled and filtered vocals of "Afqid Adh-Dhakira (I Lose Memory)", like an alien dream, the drones of a bowed double bass lead the listener into a drum groove that lays the groundwork for El Shazly's sultry and captivating presence. The Arabic prose lingers over interjections of slap-back delayed guitar twangs and an avant-garde arrangement of dissonant winds, horns, and seemingly random drum fills, ending with an eerie soundscape that wouldn't feel out of place in a giallo classic. Composed, written, and produced by El Shazly herself in collaboration with The Dwarfs Of East Agouza's Maurice Louca and Sam Shalabi on co-composition and arrangement duties, the album was crafted across two continents, between Canada and Egypt, and features the crème of Montreal's contemporary-classical and improvised music scene, most of whom are members of Shalabi's own Land Of Kush ensemble. In between El Shazly's five original tracks, the listener is treated to an abstract conversion of Sayyid Darwish's classic "Ana 'Ishiqt (I Once Loved)". El Shazly's haunting vocal floats over broken kalimba and harp arpeggios which slowly intertwine with a free, bowed double bass improv to nestle within the breaks between Younes Al-Qadhi's early 20th century verses of love and betrayal. More than that, it is difficult to really describe, but imagine the worlds of Nico, Björk, and Annette Peacock with the Arabic language as their mother tongue, re-approached through acoustic avant-jazz harmony and re-constructed with a dash of Kamilya Jubran's modern styling of Arabic maqam and you may be somewhere close. Recorded and delicately mixed through miles of analog cabling by Thierry Amar and mastered by Harris Newman, the album is adorned with the surrealist artwork of Egyptian artist Marwan El-Gamal and designed with custom typography by Egyptian designer Valerie Arif. Includes booklet featuring the lyrics in Arabic and English.

Nottingham's Origin One returns with another bass heavy anthem. Traversing roots reggae, hip hop, dub, and steppers, this is a perfect example of Origin One's style of production, eclectic in influence and heavy on the bottom end. Two joyful minimal synth-pop pearls in the same vein as early '80s singles by Carol and Rive Gauche, first released on the compilation Walkin' After Midnight (1982). Occidental White was founded at same time as Kaa Antilope, the new wave band founded by Bernard Vranckx and Frédéric Walheer. PARKS, TESS Blood Hot LP
Long overdue vinyl issue of Tess Parks's 2013 Mazzy Star-esque debut, Blood Hot. A native of Toronto, Tess Parks moved to London, England at the age of seventeen where she briefly studied photography before deciding to focus on music. Tess made an impression on industry legend Alan McGee, founder of Creation Records, albeit the timing of their meeting could hardly have been less ideal; McGee was no longer involved in music and Tess was due to move back to Toronto. After moving back to her hometown in 2012, Tess formed a band on the advice of McGee and less than a year after their meeting, he returned to music with his new label, 359 Music. Tess became one of his first signings and released her debut record Blood Hot in November 2013 to excellent reviews. One reviewer described her as "Patti Smith on Quaaludes". Others have mentioned her "gauzy psychedelic sound" and "smouldering voice". Alan McGee himself said: "She's only 24 and is already an amazing songwriter... she just doesn't quite know she is yet... her most beautiful quality is her lack of ego. Tess is an amazing lady." June 2015 saw the spine-tingling collaboration between Tess Parks and Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre), and the resulting album I Declare Nothing was released to critical acclaim on A Recordings (AUK 120CD/LP). They toured together throughout the UK and Europe over the summer of 2015. This first vinyl issue is presented here on clear vinyl with red marble.

"René" is reworked by Roman Flügel; arpeggiated blips and beeps and echo primitive electronic explorations with a subby kick drum. Alex Boman remixes "Jeanne" locking into his signature groovy, tribal approach. Dutch wunderkind Satori tackles "Jorge", twisting the original into a psychedelic groover with backwards vocals, marimba-like melodies, fat basslines, and shuffling breakbeats.

SABATTIS Warning in the Sky LP
2018 repress. Sabattis were an underground hard rock band from New York formed in 1968 by Jim Marvin (guitar and lead vocals), Gary Culotta (keyboard and vocals), Larry Wegman (drums), and Rocky Kaler (bass). Influenced by bands like Deep Purple, Mountain, and Grand Funk, they gigged around town playing lots of psychedelic clubs and venues. In 1970, they recorded a demo with the intention of securing a record deal, but the deal never came. The demo tape was in fact a fully finished album recorded and engineered by a friend of the band, Mick Gauzaski, who, despite using a homemade studio, managed to obtain a real pro sound -- no wonder Gauzaski has since won multiple Grammys. The Sabattis demo remained unreleased until 2011 when Jargon Records discovered the tapes and put out a CD edition with the band's involvement. This is the first vinyl release of Warning in the Sky, remastered from the original tapes, featuring a new cover design, and including an insert with rare photos and liner notes by Klemen Breznikar (It's Psychedelic Baby!). Sabbatis's sound is powerful heavy-psych with swirling Hammond organ and hard guitar, bringing to mind other obscure acts like Jungle.

Sophia Kennedy's self-titled album (PAMPA 012CD/LP, 2017) was a watershed moment for both the American-born avant pop artist and Pampa Records. On Being Special, Sophia continues to examine the art of left-field song-crafting. The center of "Being Special" is its trio of percussive piano riff, strings, and handclaps, which warms the heart with a notable throwback cinematic feel. "Afraid", originally written by Nico, hints at a sparse DIY affair in Kennedy's version, but the song ingeniously matures in small increments. The quirky "Apple In The Basket" embodies a whirling circus carousel, enhanced by staccato organ chords and rhyming word couplets.

DJ DEEP & TRAUMER Slang 2x12"
We have a choice. To progress towards a civilization which does not unconsciously perpetuate or aggravate inequality and poverty, we need to accept our many differences. For those who prefer uniformity or others who would rather avoid proximity, the celebration of diversity might sound ridiculous. A certain measure of discomfort is required to reach compassion. But peace through diversity is no prophet's fantasy. It is no harder to imagine than the magical fact that we are alive right now. The eternal act of dancing is one of the most active form of contemplation. Facing our own selves in the mirror of movement, we realize that we indeed are reflections of one another at all times. What will our own actions and thoughts feed around us?Sourcing their inspiration from the many shades of color that co-exist on between black-and-white on the great designer's palette, it is through their open and eclectic selections that Possible Futures turn dancefloors into spaces of self-discovery and transcendence. On the heels of two grainy cuts by Leonel, Possible Futures is proud to present this second recording, another therapeutic blend for self-discovery and restorative motion. Slang is a new perspective on the rich collaborative efforts that unite DJ Deep and Roman Poncet. Over the last two years, their studio work has resulted in an eclectic myriad of productions. May it be on Rekids, on Tresor Records as Adventice, on Desire as Sergie Rezza, and now as Slang, their music is always unfamiliar and far-reaching into different sources of inspiration. Afro percussions, dubbed-out processing, field recordings, and house chords come together under the form of these poems, contemplative at times and measured at others.

Thanks to Dixon, Rush was soon cutting singles for the Chicago-based Cobra Records, and in 1956 his first single, "I Can't Quit You Baby", which shot to number 6 on the R&B charts. Over the next two years Rush released a total of eight singles for Cobra (all produced by Dixon), including masterpieces like "Double Trouble" (featuring Ike Turner on guitar), "Keep On Loving Me Baby", and "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)", inventing Chicago's West Side blues style (along with Magic Sam and Buddy Guy) along the way. These eight singles, collected here, represent one of the most outstanding moments in Chicago blues.

JOHNSON, ROBERT King Of The Delta Blues Singers LP
Rumble Records present a reissue of King Of The Delta Blues Singers, a collection of Robert Johnson recordings released on Columbia in 1961. The years 1936-1937 were the entirety of Robert Johnson's recording career, when he was only 26 years old. He died a year later, poisoned by a jealous husband. Eighty years later he is known around the world as the author of such standards as "Love In Vain" and "Sweet Home Chicago", and is considered a myth, whose whole repertoire is simply legendary. The influence of Robert Johnson's music still shows on contemporary works, and many of his songs have been since covered -- sometimes stolen -- by other great artists; Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones, among others. This brilliant collection of his recordings is as good an intro to the blues as anything else in the history of the genre.

ELEPHANT9 Greatest Show On Earth LP+CD
LP version. It's not often a "jazz" band take the big step from the club scene to a 1300 capacity rock venue like Oslo's Rockefeller. But then again, Elephant9 is not your ordinary jazz band. Often being named Norway's best live band -- surely quite rare for an instrumental band -- they are equally popular in jazz and rock circles. On Greatest Show On Earth, their fifth studio album, Elephant9 is back to the core trio of their first two albums; Ståle Storløkken, Nikolai Hængsle, and Torstein Lofthus, three of Norway's finest musicians. The Greatest Show On Earth displays some truly astonishing playing and is a more dynamic, structured and focused album with all tracks clocking in around the six-minute mark. It's also very much a trio effort where all members are equal, and not only a vehicle for a soloist. Ståle Storløkken (keyboards) is widely considered the most inventive keyboard player on the Norwegian scene, his playing with bands like Supersilent, Humcrush, Motorpsycho, Terje Rypdal, and countless others being firm testament to this. Nikolai Hængsle (bass) is since long a member of popular rock group Big Bang as well as Ketil Møster's quartet Møster!, Needlepoint, and Band Of Gold. Torstein Lofthus (drums) is probably the most in demand session drummer in Norway.

BUNNY TYLERS, THE Chance Meetings CD
Drone/ambient group from Beirut, whose core consists of guitarists Charbel Haber (Scrambled Eggs, Malayeen, Johnny Kafta's Anti-Vegetarian Orchestra) and Fadi Tabbal (The Incompetents, Under The Carpet, Safar), often joined on stage by Pascal Semerdjian and Marwan Tohmé from folk band Postcards. Operating firmly outside of any musical trends, at the heart of Bunny Tylers is the desire to tie musical loose ends and threads derived as much from the two men's solo records, as a very tangible teenage dream of remaking My Bloody Valentine's Loveless (1991). The duo initially came together in 2013 to compose and record incidental music for Nadim Tabet and Karine Wehbe's video essay "Summer of 91". They began exploring different guitar bowing techniques, away from rigid compositional stratagems. Preoccupied with texture rather than finite structure, guitar drones and intricate pedal-work set the ambience and mood for Haber's lyrics of self-reflection and existential bleakness. First album Glitches & Drones 2013-2016 (RPTD 016CD), was released by Lebanese indie label Ruptured in 2016. The duo's second album was recorded by Benoit de Villeneuve (from Team Ghost and a collaborator of M83) in 2017.

POSTCARDS I'll Be Here In The Morning CD
Postcards is a dream pop/indie rock band formed in Beirut, Lebanon by four friends in the summer of 2012. After a series of well-received EPs through 2013-2017, I'll Be Here In The Morning is their debut full-length, teaming up once again with producer Fadi Tabbal of Tunefork Studios. Defined by hushed, introspective vocals floating over expansive sonic spaces that shift between harsh noise and dreamy soundscapes. The constant oscillation between the opposite states of mind that the band deals with in Lebanon runs deep within the album both musically and lyrically. The music alternates between repeated cycles of calm and unrest, anger and surrender, simplicity and intricacy as Julia Sabra -- the band's singer and lyricist -- tackles this recurrent theme of duality. The songs see her struggle with feelings of sadness, indifference, deception, femininity, and empowerment. The end result is the most sincere and personal project the quartet has produced so far. "The feelings Postcards project live are a true representation of life here, a city of youth, love and life, with an underlying, unspoken sense of dejection and gloom" --Get Out Blog Lebanon.

Stephan Hinz is synonymous with cutting-edge, big room anthems and Juncture EP continues to attest to the consistency of his prowess. Hinz's kicks off with the self-titled "Juncture" as massive low end, crisp hats, and burly percussion lay the ground work for a delicate and hypnotizing lead. Changing themes but sticking to his trademark approach "Panopticon" lets the drums do the work -- heaving bursts of sonic gold explode through the percussive barrage creating an incredibly versatile tune. "Illusions" sees simple but highly effective drum programming carry flawlessly restrained harmonies resulting in a lavish trek into the emotionally-charged club moments.

ATKINSON, FELICIA Hand In Hand 2LP
2018 repress. Double LP version. Félicia Atkinson's new full-length album, Hand In Hand follows the highly-acclaimed A Readymade Ceremony (SHELTER 055CD/LP, 2015), and her collaboration with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Comme Un Seul Narcisse (SHELTER 070LP, 2016). Composed over 2016 at EMS and at home in Brittany, Hand In Hand could be considered as the most ambitious body of work recorded by the French musician and artist. Strident modular sounds tear apart minimal beats and drones; Fictional stories told by a voice slowly become reality. Hand In Hand is meant to be a moment of common thinking and listening, in its diversity and abstraction. In the same way a sci-fi novel by Philip K. Dick or a sculpture by Guy Mees can be perceived: trivial, sensitive, and mysterious at the same time. "I'm Following You" is a bleached romantic ballad for Fender Rhodes that could be the ending title of a martian love story, whereas "Visnaga" praises the resources of a desert plant through asmr voices, field recordings, and evasive chords. "A House A Dance A Poem" is a feminist hymn composed as a pyramidal structure, referring, at the same time, to the A-frame houses, the yoga position of the triangle, the first letter of the Roman alphabet, and the feminine sex. In the closing song, "No Fear But Anticipation", Atkinson offers an open-hearted plea about the existentialist necessity of finding desire even when the times seem too dark to think about it. A telepathic and non-scholastic anthem for Don Delillo, Joan Didion, and Jean Paul Sartre. The final Buchla sounds that close the record seem to deliver an unspeakable message that only birds and aliens could transcript. The echo of the '80s sci-fi anxious aethetics resonates with today's transparency of digital sounds in the whole record. The cohabitation of simple midi textures and historical Serge and Buchla signals are convoked and confronted together by a voice. The human instrument appears here as the epicenter of the recordings, giving the other instruments a gravitational point. Joan La Barbara, Robert Ashley, or Delia Derbyshire are the main influences of Atkinson in their own way of inviting fiction and abstraction as the essential materials of composition. For Hand In Hand, Félicia Atkinson used different sources for the lyrics and scores of her tracks: house plant instruction books, old issues of Desert Magazine, architecture manuals, JG Ballard and K. Dick's books, as well as her own poetry.

CV & JAB - ZIN TAYLOR Thoughts Of A Dot As It Travels A Surface LP
Thoughts Of A Dot As It Travels A Surface is the title of an album derived from a series of wall drawings begun in 2014 by multi-disciplinary Paris-based artist Zin Taylor. Drawn in simple black-and-white, the large-scale pieces depict linear landscapes populated with rough-hewn objects: potted cacti, sculptural boulders, steaming stone baths. Upon completion of a particularly ambitious 90-meter panoramic wall drawing, experimental composers Christina Vantzou and John Also Bennett were invited to interpret the work as a musical graphic score. The result was a forty-minute live performance in two parts, which was multi-track recorded and then mixed down into a ten-track album. Each piece and title corresponds to a specific section or object in the wall drawing. Vantzou, though based in Brussels, is best known for a string of enigmatic solo recordings for the American ambient imprint Kranky, while Bennett has explored electronic sound design in a variety of capacities, including in Brooklyn trio Forma. Working under their initials CV & JAB, they attempted to translate Taylor's elusive gestural lexicon into sound. The results are appropriately minimal, malleable, and mysterious. Opener "Cactus With Vent" sets the tone: insectoid murmurings and fractured crystalline tones seesaw in and out of focus, eventually disappearing within a wash of churning water. Each composition flows unbroken into the next, much like Taylor's continuous line, emphasizing fluidity, curvature, and connectivity. "Hot Tub" introduces a mesmerizing synthetic flute-like raga, pirouetting above muted jungle noises and a babbling brook. Subsequent songs skew softer and stranger, alternately meditative ("Large Suess Plant") and miasmic ("Tombstones"), remote vistas mapped with hieroglyphic frequencies. The recordings, like Taylor's nuanced mini-murals, exude a subtle but restless energy, rarely lingering too long in a fixed formation. The whooshing astral synthesizer of "Alfred Hitchcock Haze" dissolves invisibly into the smeared, somber séance of "Rock House With Door", which in turn evaporates amongst the menagerie of chattering printers, running water, and shepherd tone whispers of "String Of Objects With Planter". More so than in past projects, here Vantzou and Bennett mask their presence, allowing textures and tonalities to tangle or unspool with minimal intrusion. The effect is naturalistic, impersonal, and intriguing. Recorded live at Westfälischer Kunstverein in Münster, Germany on May 6th, 2017. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. Includes a 180CM leporello reproducing the original 9000CM wall drawing. Clear purple vinyl; reverse board-printed inner and double-width spine jacket; Edition of 700.

MUSCI/GIOVANNI VENOSTA, ROBERTO Urban And Tribal Portraits LP
Soave present a reissue of Urban And Tribal Portraits, Roberto Musci and Giovanni Venosta's 1988 release. New cover art features Sven Hedkin's photograph of early 20th century Tibetan death masks.Peter Sarram on the release: "While a number of the recordings that comprise this particular work have been (relatively) available -- through a ReR anthology that also included tracks from the other Musci/Venosta collaboration, Water Messages On Desert Sand (1987) as well as some integrated in the Music From Memory compilation, Tower Of Silence (MFM 014LP, 2016), released under Musci's name only this is indeed the first time one can listen to this fundamental work as it was meant to be heard. . . . Urban And Tribal Portraits reaffirms the idea of postmodern pastiche as a multimedia multisensory experience and sound as an ecosystem that is both aleatory and concrete, ephemeral and durable. In these binary paradoxes, a radical notion of the nature of collaboration, that is both chance induced and conversely conceptually worked out, is also established. . . . Urban And Tribal Portraits re-politicizes the notion of pastiche, engaging as it does in a kind of eco-practice, turning the process rather than the musical object into the poetic focus of the work. . . . Like much Italian experimental music from that magical decade of the '80s this is not your dad's fourth world music, with all of its ambiguous aestheticism of 'unifying' some not so well-defined primitivism of 'world ethnic styles' with the futuristic sounds of whatever 'advanced electronic techniques' were the platter du jour. In this sound the 8-bits of the E-Mu Emax is as primitive as the Jews Harp while the electronically treated Pygmy chants turn out to be as futuristic as the multi-timbral capacities of the OB-8. From the funk ostinatos of 'El Lamento De Los Ayatollah' where Venosta showcases his straight piano playing to the rarefied queer guitar arpeggios in 'Tamatave', the peaceful ripples in 'Dialogue Between A Dreamer And Others', the playfulness of 'Starfish & Kangaroos' or the post-punkish This Heat/Cabaret Voltaire aggression in 'The Fear Of A Soldier' this is destabilization as praxis, a shifting of the ground. . . . A DIY bricolage: a de-structuring of everyday sound objects towards new uses fed by local eco-situated experiences, transformative of performance and listening. Surrealist 'musicking' indeed."

ANDREONI/FRANCESCO PALADINO, PIER LUIGI Aeolyca LP
Soave present a reissue of Aeolyca, Pier Luigi Andreoni and Francesco Paladino's collaboration originally released on cassette in 1989.Peter Sarram on the release: "Wriggling away from any clear classification, as '80s Italian new music was wont to do, yet clearly drawing on a number of traditions and procedures, Andreoni and Paladino's Aeolyca project stands on its own as it intersects the two musicians' already well-established partnership in A.T.R.O.X. and The Doubling Riders among other settings with the sounds generated by Mario Ciccioli's Aeolian sculptures. Neither aiming for the organic purity of Harry Bertoia's Sonambient recordings or the complex constructions of Mario Bertoncini's works with Aeolian harps, Aeolyca walks a line of resistance in refusing to get with any program. The music that was produced in Andreoni and Paladino's interaction with the recordings extracted by Emiliano Licastro from Ciccioli's sculptures is one that breaks the boundaries between the sound and musical sources. The work is divided between the quick pop timings of the 'Rain On The Bells', 'Sunday Clothes For Brass Bands' and 'The Peruvian Club' and the longer eponymous structured compositions that bookend the record each track characterized by a dominant sonority inspired by specific iterations of globalized musics. Ultimately, though, notwithstanding their individual structural and sound diversities, the project is indebted to the sampler, the ultimate absorber, the sound source that takes up the most musical space and the possibilities of eroding sources and styles that it imposes. Further, to indicatively attest the historical context from which it emerges, the 1980s as they came to a close, Aeolyca was originally released on cassette, that decade's foremost format, agile, immediate, economical and for a US label (Violet Glass Oracle). This is music that has digested many of the period's instinctive gestures. It exists as a satellite, incapable and unwilling to articulate antecedents and to nurture descendants. This is a unique work in Andreoni and Paladino's well-documented activity, individually, in duo, and in their eclectic collaborations with the likes of Roger Eno and Riccardo Sinigaglia. Like the Time Zones Festival from which this project got its start Aeolyca is what you find on the 'path of possible musics'."

Sound poetry emerged in the early years of the post-war avant-garde and pioneered phonetic art forms that explored the relationship between human speech and sound, experimental music and structures of language. Affiliated to concrete poetry, fluxus, minimalism, conceptual and performance art, the first generation of sound poets questioned the meanings of "music" and "poetry" using interferences as source of new phonetic art patterns/compositions. Poesia Sonora represents one of the first international sound poetry compilations. The record came out in 1975 for CBS under the label "Recorthings & Zona Archives", curated and edited by Maurizio Nannucci. ATARPOP 73 & LE COLLECTIF LE TEMPS DES CERISES Attention L'Armee LP
Staubgold present a reissue of Atarpop 73 & Le Collectif Le Temps Des Cerises's Attention L'Armee, originally released in 1975. 10 December 1974. 200 conscripts exited the casern of Draguignan in order to demonstrate in the streets of the city. They made part of those clandestine soldier committees multiplying themselves all over France with a view to unite the young activists of the extreme left with the anti-militarists. This dispute was a backwash of the student manifestations in spring 1973 against the Debré law reforming the military service. The Collectif du Temps des Cerises founded by François Tusques, one of the pioneers of the French free jazz, supported the insubordinates. Denis Levaillant, 22 years old at the time, became the driving force of this discographical project. It's with another big name in jazz, Jef Gilson in his studio Palm, that the group recorded the compositions of Levaillant, appearing under the pseudonym Serge Igor, as well as cover versions of traditional Spanish music, among others the mythic "El Paso Del Ebro". The young French jazz avant garde scene of the early '70s participates in that session which brought together musicians like Jean-Jacques Avenel, Pierre Rigaud, Jean Méreu, Antoine Cuvelier, Gérard Tamestit, Guy Oulchen, Christian Ville, Robert Lucien, Carlos Andréou, and Kirjuhel. The graphic designer collective Atarpop 73 created the sleeve of the album which was released in an edition of 3000 copies and sold during the student manifestations. This radical report of a rebellious youth raising from the still glowing ashes of May 1968 offers a jazz as spiritual as revolutionary. Comes in high-quality full-color gatefold sleeve with insert; Edition of 500.

LES FRERES MEGRI Mahmoud, Hassan Et Younes LP
Restocked, lower price. A reissue of Les Frères Mégri's Mahmoud, Hassan Et Younes, originally released in 1974. Les Frères Mégri was a Moroccan rock band formed in Oujda, Morocco in the late 1960s. The band consisted of four members: the three brothers, Hassan, Mahmoud, and Younès, and their sister Jalila Mégri. Before the creation of the band, the Megri brothers were popular session musicians, composers, and producers in Morocco, starting in the late '50s. In the early '70s, Hassan and Mahmoud released four singles as Les Frères Mégri: El Harib/Heya Essamra, Galouli Ensaha/Kellemtini, Sebar/Ououd Ou Chouk in 1971 and Sabar/Chaaltiha Nar in 1972. This LP, their second album simply titled Younes Hassan Mahmoud and a collaboration between all three brothers, was released in 1974. They re-recorded some of the singles tracks with Younes and the result is one of the finest examples of the early '70s progressive, psych, folk sounds coming from North Africa and beyond. This is an album that stands as a high point for the genre globally. A baroque folk approach that demonstrates utterly mesmerizing results, psychedelic, electric guitars, sitars, bongos, swirling multi-tracked vocals that sound like prime era Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Trees, and the first two Pink Floyd albums -- It is of that pedigree. A holy grail LP that has been near impossible to locate for over 40 years. Beautifully remastered, it's presented here in its first ever reissue. Edition of 500. Includes the track "Leili Twil" -- once covered by the Sun City Girls on their 330,003 Crossdressers from Beyond the Rig Veda album.

JIHA, PARK Communion LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code. "I don't want to play only traditional music. I want to play my own music... my own stories." --Park JihaOver the last few years a rising tide of new Korean artists have staked a place in the global music conversation. Groups like Jambinai, Black String and Park Jiha's earlier duo ?[su?m] have created exciting soundworlds that deftly combine the instrumentation and complex expression of Korean traditional music with an array of contemporary sounds such as post-rock, doom metal, downtempo jazz, and classical minimalism. While Park Jiha's most recent musical endeavor, her debut solo album Communion, is another decisive step towards a more personal and forward-looking musical vocabulary, it also is deeply rooted in her traditional music education and background. Jiha's main instrument is the piri, a traditional Korean instrument which is like an oboe. She also plays the saenghwang, a traditional instrument similar to a mouth organ and made of bamboo, the yanggeum (hammered dulcimer), and percussion. Park Jiha started her music career by founding the duo ?[su?m] with Jungmin Seo in 2007 -- after she had finished her musical studies. ?[su?m]'s music, composed with an array of traditional instruments and buoyed by unorthodox musical structures, was an immediate and profound influence on the new Korean music scene. The duo released the album Rhythmic Space: A Pause For Breath in 2010, and ?[su?m] 2nd in 2014. But Park Jiha began to hear a much different music -- one that directly interacted with more distant sound traditions and a more eclectic instrumental palette. Putting ?[su?m] on pause for the moment, she started collaborating with John Bell (vibraphone) and Kim Oki (bass clarinet, saxophone) to create Communion, her first solo album. Originally released in Korea in 2016, the album's compositions are sometimes hushed and other times slowly swelling and dynamic. It skillfully unites hypnotic minimalism and experimental strategies with Park Jiha's distinctive mastery of the piri, saenghwang, and yanggeum. "The Longing of the Yawning Divide" is inspired by the solemnity and resonance of a monastery in Leuven, Belgium. "All Souls' Day" constructs harmony and rhythmic lift between an unlikely grouping of instruments: the yanggeum, piri, saxophone, vibraphone, and the jing. The album's opening composition, "Throughout The Night" is a precise and keening dialogue between the piri and the bass clarinet.

ASTOR, PETE One For The Ghost CD
"The master of less is more" --The Guardian.Pete Astor on the record: "Time passes. Life happens. People arrive and people leave. Songs celebrate, songs grieve, look at yesterday and smile towards tomorrow; and everywhere, ghosts. One evening, when I was enjoying my favourite red wine, I decided to pour an extra glass for people and times past. Soon it became a tradition, the name of a song and then an album: One For The Ghost."This is a record born through time; seasoned and erudite Indie auteur, ex leader of Creation Records' favorites The Loft and The Weather Prophets, Pete Astor brings together strands and tributaries in his work over the years, mining timeless guitar pop to frame wry lyrical insights and melodic hooks, making music for today, with a true line from the past and an eye to the future. Having released Spilt Milk in 2016 to an overwhelmingly positive response, Astor continues the musical spirit of that album with James Hoare (Ultimate Painting, Proper Ornaments, Veronica Falls) remaining a mainstay on guitar. He is now joined by The Wave Pictures' rhythm section of Franic Rozycki on bass and Jonny Helm on drums; Pam Berry of Withered Hand and Black Tambourine contributes vocals. One For The Ghost's rainy day psychedelia maintains Astor's engagement with relevant and contemporary worlds; from the mordant wit of the title track ("It's the wallpaper or me you know/one of us has got to go/ said Oscar Wilde/ and then he died"), to the London-based outsider ache of "Walker" ("Walking the town, joining the future to the past/ the line from Arnold Circus all the way to Marble Arch"), via the ageless love song of "Water Tower" and its paean to rural modernism ("Meet me by the water tower/ it's my favorite concrete flower"). Bruised, but very much alive, Astor and One For The Ghost face the future with a wry smile and hungry heart.

It considers the relationships between memory, time, and context through four vibrantly constructed tracks that push Novak's work in a new direction while simultaneously exploring his sonic past. The Future is a Forward Escape Into the Past is composed as a sonata -- a single gesture broken into four parts -- that meditates on the inevitable progression of time. The album's conceptual roots stem from The Archaic Revival (1991) by American ethnobotanist and psychonaut Terence McKenna. In it, McKenna theorizes that when a culture becomes dysfunctional it attempts to revert back to a saner moment in its own history. He suggested that abstract expressionism, body piercing and tattooing, psychedelic drug use, sexual permissiveness, and rave culture were proof of this default to a more primal time. The text's idealism was influential to Novak in the '90s, but the theory bears a darkly-veiled resemblance to the modern rise of nostalgia-driven nationalism. Novak on the release: "For this album I was interested in expanding into a more emotive compositional style and palette. In doing so, I was reminded that this was territory I had covered early on in my career -- the whole process became a way to reconnect with my own past and history." The album's four tracks dynamically shift and surge, where time is rendered as material and momentum compels it into movement. Subtle distortion throughout the album ties the tracks together and echoes techniques explored in Novak's Meadowsweet (2006). Tension gives way to a halcyon vision of place in "Radical Transparency", immediately followed by the austere swells of "The Inertia of Time", a piece that captures the twin impulse of generating optimistic beauty in harshly muted tones. Both tracks introduce subtle bass swells and stabs reminiscent of In Residence (2008). From there, the album grows darker with "Casting Ourselves Back into the Past" and "Nothing Ever Transcends its Immediate Environment", two icier tracks that preserve the album's core. The latter introduces a processed vocal sample of Geneva Skeen, similar to Novak's collaborative work with Marc Manning on Pairings (2007). The album is a study in perception and alteration, manipulation, and awareness, effectively capturing Novak's command of emotional texturing. Artwork & photography: Jon Wozencroft. Mastered by Lawrence English. Edition of 500.

ALESSANDRONI, ALESSANDRO Romance & Drama LP
Transversales Disques present the first reissue of Romance & Drama, an essential LP by Italian pioneer and Ennio Morricone cohort, Alessandro Alessandroni. Originally released on Munich based experimental, progressive library label Coloursound. Alessandroni at his best: very refined Italian cinematic sound, tense 12-string guitar themes, synth sequences, beautiful sound of chamber classical music mixed with psych choir. You can feel Alessandroni's magical touch for melodies and arrangements on nearly every song and at the same time, some are reminiscent of François de Roubaix on themes like "Dramatic" and "Sad Farewell". No doubt each track of this underrated masterpiece could have been a classic soundtrack theme. Remastered from original tapes.

BAKER, DUCK Duck Baker Plays Monk LP
On this LP, recorded at studio sessions in 2010 and 2015, Duck Baker delves deeply into the thinking of one of the most challenging composers, and renders guitar interpretations that are true to the original intent. That Baker's experience playing blues, gospel, ragtime, and swing serve him well on this project goes without saying. Duck Baker Plays Monk contains solo acoustic guitar renditions of nine Thelonious Monk compositions. Baker will remind you through his playing that the idiosyncrasies of Monk's composing are further dimensions of the Americana continuum (and source musics) that has been his turf for years. Especially in Monk's centennial year, many will address Monk's oeuvre: Hundreds will in fact interpret the texts, but very few can inhabit this music in the way that the mature Duck Baker can. Includes new essays by Duck and the late Roswell Rudd. Available exclusively on high-quality vinyl; limited one-time pressing.

TARENZI/JAMES CAMMACK/JORGE ROSSY, ROBERTO Love And Other Simple Matters CD
Roberto Tarenzi presents his new album, Love And Other Simple Matters. To record this expansive work Tarenzi, among the most proficient pianists on the contemporary jazz scene, assembled an amazing international rhythm section made up of James Cammack, legendary bassist for the Ahmad Jamal Trio, and the iconic Jorge Rossy, Brad Mehldau Trio's original drummer and multi-instrumentalist. With his extemporization and innovative stylistic exploration, Roberto Tarenzi exalts listeners in this top-quality and utterly compelling album. The album's title, which at first glance may appear ironic, cheerfully suggests that a lighthearted mindset can transform the burden of complex "matters". The trio provides a musical demonstration of this through complex harmonic and rhythmic elaborations that are deftly and alchemically rendered eloquent and fluid in a language which is pulsating and expressive. After listening to the album preview, David Liebman commented: "Roberto is one of the most talented pianists I have met over the past years, among the world's outstanding musicians with whom I greatly enjoy playing and spending time together. In this album he performs with two brilliant professionals and the depth of his great musical personality fully emerges." Personnel: Roberto Tarenzi - piano; James Cammack - doublebass; Jorge Rossy - drums.

BLUE MOKA FEAT. FABRIZIO BOSSO Blue Moka CD
Blue Moka is the debut album of the homonymous quartet composed of Alberto Gurrisi (Hammond), Emiliano Vernizzi (sax), Michele Bianchi (guitar), and Michele Morari (drums) with the extraordinary participation of Fabrizio Bosso. The album collects eight original songs that combine blues atmospheres with funky rhythms and R&B, opening up to New York nu-jazz. To these pieces are added two standards by Wayne Shorter ("Footprints") and Michel Petrucciani ("Brazilian Like") and a tribute to Lucio Dalla ("Futura"), a musician very dear to the band. Blue Moka takes up the colors of the American jazz tradition but experiments with the chromatic textures, creating a new shade of blue: a blue moka. A stylistic number that oscillates between research of language, tradition, and groove, a space that all members live with irony and complicity also thanks to the energetic sound that distinguishes them. The Blue Moka born in this way, in 2009, from an idea of a group of close-knit friends in love with jazz. The inclusion of Emiliano Vernizzi on sax has further expanded the sound possibilities and increased the need to create an original repertoire. Blue Moka collects the different souls of the band and is a mixture of modern jazz, R&B, and funk, with great respect for the Hammond tradition of the '60s. In the background, the numerous artists who influenced and formed the members of the quartet: Jimmy Smith, Art Blakey, Wynton Marsalis, Brian Blade, Pat Metheny, up to Robert Glasper, Roy Hargrove, and Larry Goldings. Among the original songs, "Bacon VS Tofu" (by Emiliano Vernizzi) is the first song played with Bosso, while "I Felt This For You" (by Michele Bianchi) was the decisive piece that highlighted the capacity of the group to explore new sounds together. Characterized by a clear Nordic sound juxtaposed with the typical bop of the Hammond, "Clear" (by Morari and Bianchi) is a reason that Michele Morari had in mind during a lonely trip to Lapland. 30 months born from one session of four days of tests, during which Alberto Morari ate Parmigiano- Reggiano aged 30 months. Personnel: Michele Morari - drums; Alberto Gurrisi - Hammond; Michele Bianchi - guitar; Emiliano Vernizzi - sax; Fabrizio Bosso - trumpet.

FUKAMACHI, JUN Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band LP
Reissue of Japanese artist Jun Fukamachi's 1977 electric version of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. "This superbly crafted direct-to-disk features the versatile Fukamachi as a veritable one-man band in a lively album that captures the essence of the original Beatles' tunes throughout. The innovative arrangements of the artist, tailored to get the maximum benefit from a surrounding instrument array, produce one of the better technical efforts of this series. Synthesizer effects provide special "flavor," particularly at the close of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" on side one, and in the evocative opening of "She's Leaving Home" on side two. . . . Fukamachi blends a concert grand, electric piano, Arp synthesizer, glockenspiel, bass drum, tambourine and other electronic instruments with results that indicate a group, not a solo, with ample display of each." --Billboard, September 9, 1978

DIDDLEY, BO Bo Diddley LP
Wax Love present a reissue of Bo Diddley's full-length self-titled debut album, originally released in 1958. The full-length debut by the man known as the originator of rock and roll should need no introduction. Though never a top-seller on par with his Chess Records rival, Chuck Berry, Bo produced a catalog of classics to compete with all but a handful of the best early rockers, pushing rock and roll to its funkiest ever. The Bo Diddley beat -- that "bomp, ba-bomp-bomp, bomp-bomp" to which the pop-garage 1965 hit "I Want Candy" by the Strangeloves owes everything -- is one of rock and roll's bedrock rhythms, showing up in the work of Buddy Holly, the Velvet Underground, and the Rolling Stones, to name but a few. An all-time classic and a milestone in the transition from blues to early rock and roll.

He had health issues and his original quintet from the 1950s was on its last legs. He played with a variety of hired hands while working on assembling a new quintet. Seven Steps To Heaven collected various recordings from LA and New York, and the New York recordings are particularly interesting because they feature the 17-year-old Tony Williams, as well as Ron Carter, and Herbie Hancock, three of the brilliant players that would make up Davis's working quintet for the next several years. CURTIS, COLIN Colin Curtis Presents Jazz Dance Fusion 2CD
2017 saw Colin Curtis celebrate his 50th anniversary as a DJ. He is one of the scene's leading figures as a result of his legendary '70s partnership with Ian Levine at the Blackpool Mecca. This is Colin's own story: "By 1979, the development of Jazz rooms at major soul/funk all-dayers was providing a much-needed outlet for the more discerning collectors and the fanatical jazz dancers. . . . I had started to experiment with the jazzier side of dance tracks at Blackpool Mecca in around 1976 with artists like Patrice Rushen, Bill Summers, Azar Lawrence, Charles Earland, Johnny Hammond, Donald Byrd, etc., all artists I had discovered using the inner sleeves of Blue Note, Fantasy, Prestige, and Mercury labels. . . . [As a collector] I was thriving on searching out more of this amalgamation of jazz styles adding fusion, percussion, vocals and tempo to this burgeoning genre. As the jazz room identity increased within this environment for me Birmingham, Nottingham, Leeds, Manchester all became prominent in their enthusiasm for jazz dance. . . . Baz Fe Jazz, Chris Reed, Shaun Williams, Simon Mansell, Jonathan Woodliffe, Paul Murphy, Eric & Floyd, Hewan Clarke, and many others were willing to push the barriers. This jazz dance explosion spread across the country with DJs like Dr Bob Jones, Colin Parnell, and Boo Sylvester adding to the London connection via clubs like The Electric Ballroom and The Horseshoe. . . . [This] compilation acts as an introduction to this electric, cool and uplifting music that was affecting so many enthusiastic dancers and DJ/collectors. All the tracks on here are taken from one of the most prolific and emerging labels for this genre, Muse Records, that offered the complete spectrum of styles to fit in with this emerging scene crossing over with jazz fusion, be bop, vocals, electric keyboards, and percussion."Double-CD version features Michele Hendricks, Richie Cole, Emanuel K. Rahim & The Kahliqs, Dom Um Romao, Dave Pike, Mark Murphy, Viva Brasil, Walt Barr, Ron Eschete, Eric Kloss, Charlie Earland, David Schnitter, Dom Salvador, Dave Matthews' Big Band, Harold Ousley, Michael Carvin, and Bill Hardman.Further reading in this interview by Greg Wilson: http://blog.gregwilson.co.uk/2017/05/50-years-colin-curtis-uk-mancuso/
