SIMONETTI, MIKE Solipsism (Collected Works 2006-2013) LP
LP version. Solipsism is an archival release of music from Mike Simonetti's tenure as owner of Italians Do It Better Records, spanning from 2006-2013. During that time Mike wrote a lot of music. Some of it was used for films, some for TV commercials, some for fashion shows and he even released a record or two. Influenced by the intersection of '80s arena rock bands like AC/DC and Judas Priest, glam rock/dance bands like Rockets and Supermax, and especially the underground Italian producer Piero Umiliani -- the album is chock-full of atmospheric rock-inspired arpeggiated riffs. The mixture of metal and chugging dance music makes for a unique listening experience. Every song has a riff, every song is heavy and dense. Only one song goes above 118 bpm. These are heavy chuggers that make for a tense emotional experience that exceeds your standard, easy-to-write-off "soundtrack" fare, mainly because it was never written with that in mind. It was meant to be a fist-pumping arena rock inspired thumper. You can hear that in the one two punch of "A Prayer For War" into "Illusions," which is an outtake from his "The Magician" sessions. Other songs like "Solipsism" showcase the airy melodies that were to come with his other project Pale Blue. If you listen closely, you can hear how Simonetti's music and dark vibes inspired his then label partner Johnny Jewel to take his own bands Chromatics and Glass Candy in a different, more cinematic direction. This was written and recorded years before the Drive soundtrack and all the hoopla around the sudden soundtrack resurgence. In 2011 Mike was asked to submit some songs for a soon-to-be-released Hollywood remake. He submitted most of the songs from this album, and they were slated for release on the soundtrack, but the project fell apart, and the film went in a different direction and changed producers. Soon after, because of all the drama and foolishness, he left Italians Do It Better to start over with 2MR and Pale Blue. This is the nail in the coffin. Godspeed.

INLAND & JULIAN CHARRIERE An Invitation To Disappear CD
An Invitation To Disappear is the debut LP by British electronic musician Inland, aka Ed Davenport, and his first release for A-TON. Based on his soundtrack for a video installation by conceptual artist Julian Charrière, Davenport has recast the material and field recordings into eight tracks of rhythmically intricate electronics and spectral, ambient techno, inspired by Charrière's visually striking, 76-minute tracking shot through a palm plantation toward a totemic sound system on full blast. Both the album and original soundtrack were created in response to the 200th anniversary of the eruption of Indonesia's Tambora volcano in 1815, which plunged the world into darkness and caused a series of extreme weather conditions. At the time, the natural climate change crisis resulted in numerous global famines and became known throughout the northern hemisphere as "The Year Without Summer", with global communities forced to adapt to sudden radical changes in temperature and weather. An Invitation To Disappear offers a contemporary parallel, leading viewers and listeners down a seemingly endless direct path of gridded palms from dawn to dusk; a bio-commercial monoculture where ancient jungle once flourished. Light flickers between rows of fruit-laden trees and a distant fire burns in the undergrowth where the border between natural image and computer simulation breaks down. At the same time, formerly incoherent rumblings of sub-frequencies begin to transform into the contours of rhythm. This is reflected sonically in eight perspectives on the lush, synthetic jungle, made of myriad buzzing fauna, morphing melody and colossal bass-weight. All paths lead toward an apocalyptic dance floor, though speeds vary widely. Rhythms dissolve from straight to broken, and synth tempos operate by their own internal clocks (and logic). Juxtaposing industrial agriculture with rave culture, the album explores the industrialization and refinement of nature, and the new strange forms emerging from the synthetic grids of both. As Inland, Davenport has previously contributed soundtracks to other installations by the Swiss-born Charrière, whose artistic practice focuses on bridging environmental science and cultural history, often taking place in remote geophysical locations, including ice fields, volcanoes, and radioactive sites.

ANDREOLINA An Island In The Moon LP
An Island In The Moon is the perfectly-conceived minimal ambient project from Italian composers Pier Luigi Andreoni (Doubling Riders, ATROX) and Silvio Linardi. They take their name, Andreolina as a portmanteau of their names; both were deeply involved with the label Auf Dem Nil on which the album was originally released in 1990. The duo stick to a disciplined and simple palette, using only two synthesizers and a Roland S50 sampler. They are joined by fellow electronic journeyman Riccardo Sinigaglia, who contributes piano and samples on two tracks. Taking influences from Italian minimalism while adding some jazz hints, Andreolina sprawls over weightless instrumentals that never stay soporific for too long on this singularly rare album. Auf Dem Nil or ADN was one of the most adventurous Italian record labels of the '80s and early '90s with releases by De Fabriek, Sinigaglia and Pierre Bastien, leaving its mark on the experimental music scene back than and influencing musicians worldwide up until today. Edition of 500.

VA Air Texture Volume VI 2CD
The Air Texture series asks two producers/performers to provide a selection of unreleased music. The only guidance is the music should not be main floor bangers; other than that, the label gets out of the way, allowing them autonomy over their selection. For Air Texture Volume VI, Steffi and Martyn were asked to step up. Exciting, since as residents at Berghain/Panorama Bar, two of the most important dancefloors in the world -- how would two such respected artists approach our experimental ethos? Bringing together contributions from veteran producers such as Total Science, As One (Kirk Degiorgio) and Stingray, as well as contemporaries Actress, V.I.V.E.K. and Shed, the artists explain in a press release that the selected tracks are all "unique interpretations of a leftfield, non-linear aesthetic". Double-CD version features Synkro, Appleblim, Answer Code Request , dBridge and Lewis James, Tracing Xircles, Samuel Pling, Herron, Steffi, Afik Naim, Mosca, Novocanemusic, Mesak, FaltyDL, 214, Basic Soul Unit, Barker, Late Night Approach, Martyn, and KiNK. Double-LP version features: Steffi, Tracing Xircles, Basic Soul Unit, As One, Martyn, Afik Naim, Late Night Approach, and Answer Code Request.

DUR-DUR BAND Dur-Dur of Somalia: Volume 1, Volume 2 & Previously Unreleased Tracks 2CD
Following Analog Africa founder Samy Ben Redjeb's dangerous trip to Mogadishu in November of 2016, the label presents Dur Dur of Somalia: Volume 1, Volume 2 & Previously Unreleased Tracks. Dur-Dur, a young band from the '80s, climaxed as a band in April of 1987 with the release of Volume 2, their second album. The secrets to Dur-Dur's rapid success is inextricably linked to the vision of Isse Dahir, founder and keyboard player of the band. Isse's plan was to locate some of the most forward-thinking musicians of Mogadishu's buzzing scene and lure them into Dur-Dur. Ujeeri, the band's mercurial bass player was recruited from Somali jazz and drummer extraordinaire Handal previously played in Bakaka Band. Isse also added his two younger brothers to the line-up: Abukar Dahir Qassin was brought in to play lead guitar, and Ahmed Dahir Qassin was hired as a permanent sound engineer. On their first two albums, Volume 1 and Volume 2, three different singers traded lead-vocal duties back and forth. Shimaali, formerly of Bakaka Band, handled the Dhaanto songs, a Somalian rhythm from the northern part of the country that bears a striking resemblance to reggae; Sahra Dawo, a young female singer, had been recruited from Somalia's national orchestra, the Waaberi Band. Their third singer, the legendary Baastow, who had also been a vocalist with the Waaberi Band, and had been brought into Dur-Dur due to his deep knowledge of traditional Somali music, particularly Saar, a type of music intended to summon the spirits during religious rituals. From the very beginning, Dur-Dur's doctrine was the fusion of traditional Somali music with whatever rhythms would make people dance: funk, reggae, soul, disco, and new wave were mixed effortlessly with Banaadiri beats, Dhaanto, and spiritual Saar music. The concoction was explosive. It initially seemed that Dur-Dur's music had only been preserved as a series of murky tape dubs and YouTube videos, but after Samy arrived in Mogadishu he eventually got to the heart of Mogadishu's tape-copying network and ended up finding some of the band's fabled master tapes, long thought to have disappeared. This set reissues the band's first two albums -- the first installment in a three-part series dedicated to Dur-Dur Band -- representing the first fruit of Analog Africa's long labors to bring this extraordinary music to the wider world. Remastered from the best available audio sources. Includes two previously unreleased tracks; Accompanied by extensive liner notes, featuring interviews with original band members. Double-CD version comes with 12-page booklet.

DUMONT, DOMENIQUE Miniatures De Auto Rhythm LP
Miniatures De Auto Rhythm is the brilliant Domenique Dumont's second long player for Antinote. It's already been three years since Domenique Dumont made its entrance in the music world with his debut, Comme Ca (ATN 020LP, 2015). Despite a seemingly very quiet musical activity (the opening song to Antinote's compilation Five Years Of Loving Notes (ATN 5YEARS, 2017) was the only song released by the band in three years) a few things have changed in-between these two summers: Domenique Dumont is no more the mysterious lone French producer Antinote introduced last time but a Latvian duo, Arturs Liepins and Anete Stuce, which has been collaborating with "an enigmatic French artist whose existence cannot be confirmed nor denied" (sorry, but it sounds like there's still some mystery in the air, and, again, Antinote is just as clueless as you might be), the duo have been touring live and, most importantly, they kept on broadening their musical palette experimenting in a definitely pop field. Eight of these experiments are now tied together in Miniatures De Auto Rhythm. The record probably begins where Comme Ca ended: frantic but light drum programing backbones a solar and slightly melancholic melody on "Le Début De La Fin" ("the beginning of the end"). However, the scope gets enlarged as soon as one reaches the second tune, "Quasi Quasi", or "Quand", on the flip side, perhaps the most overtly pop-rock oriented song on the record with its Mediterranean guitar and emotional bridge. The road towards the apex of the record, "Le Soleil Dans Le Monde", is a narrow and windy one, punctuated by toy instrumentals like "Ono Mambo Haiku" or the Donkey Kong Country-friendly "Message Of The Diving Bird"; however it never departs from its original tongue-in-cheek attitude. It's quite pleasant to imagine these eight "miniatures" as field recordings from an enchanted world of pop music designed by some Pierre & Gilles disciples or being musical interpretations of half-mechanical, half-organic creations from a certain Otto Rhiesem (who might have inhabited the Locus Solus villa). There may be no definitive answers to this second set of riddles by Domenique Dumont.

SHALT Seraphim LP
SHALT turns in his longest statement to date in Seraphim, a mini-epic that unfolds over six intricately arranged, brilliantly colored acts. Sonically, Seraphim features a fusion of the sensibilities featured on previous albums: noisy effects and a barrage of rugged percussion juxtaposed with passages of melodic bliss. This is music preoccupied with technology, but with a naturalistic ethos at its core, emphasizing our confusion over humanity's influence on the world (even when uncynically trying to perform good deeds). That ethos is embodied in the baroque ambience of "Seraph," as well as the impactful, multi-layered crack of "Fleeting." It's deeply visual music and like the best sci-fi, deals with lasting contemporary issues under the guise of futurity.

79.5 Predictions CD
"Attempting to pigeonhole 79.5 into something as narrow as a single genre would be an ill-advised, if not impossible task. The New York City band sounds like someone spinning a radio dial with such passionate intensity that all the stations blend together into a single, transcendent, almost spiritual force. It's disco to the beat of modern house; it's a Supremes cover of a Cardi B banger; it's Roland Kirk playing jazz through one saxophone, funk through another, and the most earwormy pop tune the 1970's could muster through a third. It's an experience, one so effecting that with only a self-released 12" single in circulation, 79.5 had been written up twice in The New Yorker on the merit of their live sets alone. Their debut album Predictions is produced by Leon Michels and was recorded at The Diamond Mine in Queens the old school way, with the whole band playing the songs in one take and captured to analog tape. Already getting heavy spins at radio and finding it's way into the hearts of all the listeners, the instant classic "Boy Don't Be Afraid" is as bandleader Kate Mattison describes, 'a sweet little song about being. Being hopeful, being romantic, being brave. A romantic stance and a declaration of love through melody, in honest girl-group fashion. And like a classic New York deli cup of coffee, light and sweet'. This mix of influences and vibes is maybe best embodied by the stand out tune 'Facing East' which sounds like ESG meets Fleetwood Mac with Sade Saxophone for good measure. The album's title track Predictions was written by Mattison after having a dream about the apocalypse. The tracks encompass the complexity of the band, sometimes literal and light hearted, sometimes abstract and esoteric. 79.5 is easily one of New York City's most adored acts, their debut album has been eagerly anticipated and will surely supersede fans expectations."

HERING, JONATHAN Carmina Chromatico CD
Debut solo album by Liverpool-based composer and performer Jonathan Hering. An album of DIY renaissance and new music where one voice sings all the parts. Carmina Chromatico features twelve polyphonic vocal tracks all sung by Hering using his bass to counter-tenor range and presenting renaissance and contemporary compositions for up to 8 vocal lines. The album spans six hundred years featuring music from the renaissance avant-garde to his own long-form composition "Lachrymose." With his DIY sensibilities Jonathan sings every part in his own voice. Inspired in part by counter-tenor Klaus Nomi's spine chilling rendition of Henry Purcell's "The Cold Song," Hering has selected music which sweeps and wallows, clashing chromatic suspensions evoking dark and light and dissonant wavering chords connecting him to composers up to 600 years his senior, but with the voice as the key device in common. Hering creates an intimate vocal album embracing his love of dissonant, chromatic and exquisite harmonies, performances of which are normally confined to the formalities of the classical recital. Carmina Chromatico gives way to one voice creating renaissance music for all ears.

MARTELLOTTA, MASSIMO One Man Session Volume 3: One Man Orchestra LP
The five-album solo project One Man Sessions by Massimo Martellotta, continues after the synthesizers of One Man Sessions Volume 1: Sintesi (2018) and the mellow prepared piano and drum grooves of One Man Sessions Volume 2: Unprepared Piano (CNMM 002LP, 2018). With One Man Session Volume 3: One Man Orchestra , there is another change; it is indeed a full-fledged orchestral album, conceived with the film music composers of the 1950s in mind, Bernard Hermann et al. One Man Session Volume 3: One Man Orchestra , in which Martellotta engages in writing for an orchestra of a retro mold, is set in his world with an absolutely personal and current twist. Each instrument is played and tracked in real time, including the computer, which is this time a valid assistant in the simulation of some of the used timbres, intended as a real instrument in the middle of real ones. Sumptuous arches, crackling tympanums, and sinuous woods find space to dialog with lounge organ and percussion invented like the music paper itself, rubbed to keep time on some of the themes. Once again the composer surprises us and displaces us, using all his resources as multi-instrumentalist and mixing languages, venturing into worlds far away from each other. On One Man Session Volume 3: One Man Orchestra one is light years from the world summoned on One Man Sessions Volume 1: Sintesi and yet one always finds a distinctive and recognizable feature that makes all the volumes of the complete work coherent. Realized, like the other volumes, in complete solitude, the album reveals knowledge of all-round musical material and a strong taste for the melody. "Oppio" is reminiscent of the darker Ennio Morricone or Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead and is a counterpart to the opening song "Il Cappotto" , a perfect title track that quotes and closely reworks a John Williams composition. On other pieces, in episodes more rhythmic, and sometimes romantic, one finds a passion for Jon Brion and timeless melodies. One Man Session Volume 3: One Man Orchestra is an album to listen from the beginning to the end, following the emotional story told like that of a film, of which one sometimes has the impression of seeing the images, waiting to immerse themselves in the abyss evoked by the forthcoming fourth volume.

BONGUSTO, FRED Conviene Far Bene L'Amore LP
USA title: Love And Energy / Sex Machine 2037 A.D. Cinedelic Records present a reissue of Fred Bongusto's soundtrack for Conviene Far Bene L'Amore, originally released by Fonit Cetra International in 1975. In the future, the world's oil supply has finally been exhausted, causing a massive energy crisis. In a search for alternative sources of energy, a scientist invents a machine that can harness the energy expended during sexual intercourse and transfer it into electrical power. Conviene Far Bene L'Amore is a 1975 film written and directed by Pasquale Festa Campanile, a film adaptation of his novel of the same name. It is an erotic comedy with science-fiction elements that is parodying the theories of Wilhelm Reich -- the author of The Function Of The Orgasm (1927) -- in which satire and fantapolitica are mixed. The original LP with the music of Fred Bongusto, arranged and directed masterfully by Josè Mascolo, is now a cult object for the lovers of Italian melodic soundtracks with bossa nova and jazz and for the samples used by many rappers. Bongusto often combines the synth for the melody with the orchestral ground; an unmistakable and very personal solution also used the year before for the Malizia ("Malicious") soundtrack which was a great success.

AH! KOSMOS Beautiful Swamp CD
Ah! Kosmos has created a wonder that she holds you in the middle of. Also known as Basak Günak, a sound designer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist born in Istanbul, her tracks open up a space that draws the listener into a state of flow. In her second album, Beautiful Swamp, she combines crackling percussions with melodic soundscapes. Deep in the fabric of her tracks are also fears, rapture, bliss, and gloom. Günak's music captures what she has processed and overcome in her life between Istanbul and Berlin. The listener not only explores soundscapes but multi-layered emotions each layer drawing them further into the swamp. Even with her first record, Bastards (2015), Günak proved to be a border crossing producer, oscillating blissfully between avant-garde and gloomy post-rock. With Beautiful Swamp, which was created in Berlin and Istanbul in 2017, Ah! Kosmos continues challenging genre boundaries. Günak uses polyrhythms and folktronic instruments to build a mystical world of sound into which one can sink and be carried away. On this album, she has further revealed her own voice, becoming even more tangible as a person. Her music is physical and carries graceful traces of clashes. The aptly named Swamp, perhaps also a primordial soup from which all things emerge and perhaps return to, is neither dark nor light but holds the potential for everything: beginnings, endings, growth, pain. Ah! Kosmos primarily works alone. But when Günak collaborates with others, it is even more intense -- like the one with the jazz singer Elif Çaglar, heard in the song "Beyond Dreams", or with the guitarist Özgür Yilmaz on the track "Wide". Additionally, Selen Ansen, one of the most important Turkish intellectuals of her generation, has written a poem for Günak's new work, entitled "In The Dark Woods". When Günak performs live, the music reacts directly to the mood in the floor. At each of her performances, her soundscapes take on a new form. Performing solo or accompanied by a guitarist, she has already supported acts such as Sigur Rós and Jonny Greenwood's Junun Project and has starred at important festivals. She also composes for contemporary dance and theater productions, short films, and performances. In the spring of 2018, she participated in the project "Sonár Calling GJ273B" and sent her disembodied voice singing "I do not belong here" into space. You probably feel very connected to her sound, out there.

VALLE, MARCOS Samba "Demais" LP
Repressed; Cornbread Records present a reissue of Marcos Valle's debut album Samba "Demais", originally released in 1963. Marcos Valle's incredible debut established him as one of the premier performers and composers in the emerging Brazilian popular music landscape. Barely out of his Rio high school, where classmates included fellow Brazilian musical legends Edu Lobo and Dori Caymmi, Valle caught the eye of label executives and had a debut record out before his 20th birthday. Though he would later go on to be a massive superstar across his native country and a cult figure throughout the rest of the world, this humble beginning show Valle already had a complete mastery of the samba songwriting form and was already a brilliant performer. An essential Brazilian title. Includes one bonus track. 180 gram vinyl.

Cornbread Records present a reissue of Yusef Lateef's The Centaur And The Phoenix, originally released in 1960. Recorded in 2 days in October of that year, The Centaur And The Phoenix is one of reeds player Lateef's most innovative early albums. Featuring modal and hard bop material, arrangements from a young Kenny Barron, and accompaniment from Curtis Fuller, Clark Terry, Joe Zawinul, and more, the album marks a bit of a turning point for Lateef as he expanded his sound, vision, and composing talents. With songs and arrangements clearly influenced by Charles Mingus' contemporaneous work, The Centaur And The Phoenix is a near-perfect album from one of the most innovative jazz players of the mid-20th century. 180 gram vinyl.

BRUBECK QUARTET, THE DAVE Jazz Impressions Of Eurasia LP
Cornbread Records present a reissue of Dave Brubeck's Jazz Impressions of Eurasia, originally released in 1958. In 1958 the Dave Brubeck Quartet traveled to Europe and Asia on a State Department-funded tour to promote jazz music across the continents. They played 80 concerts in 14 different countries and this album is directly informed by that tour. Brubeck's compositions here draw from the folk idioms of the countries that they toured and incorporate them into a jazz structure. All the compositions here were written by Brubeck while on that tour and as soon as they returned the group, featuring of course on alto sax the wonderful Paul Desmond, entered the studio to get them down on tape. Featuring early explorations into Indian and Middle Eastern musical forms within the jazz genre, this album often does not get the credit due it for helping to expand the musical palate of jazz. 180 gram vinyl.

Featuring, as usual, his brilliant acoustic guitar work, Hopkins is accompanied here by a low key rhythm section of acoustic bass and mostly brushed drumming. The result of this minimal sound is some of the purest and most engaging blues music of the early 1960s. Though Hopkins had been recording blues and R&B for labels like Modern and Aladdin for over a decade, it was not until the folk revival firmly implanted itself into America's psyche that he crossed over to a larger audience. This is one of Hopkins's earliest albums following his breakout onto the national stage and it's one of his finest performances of all-time. 180 gram vinyl.

Throughout the Depression and WWII, Lewis maintained his day job as a street sweeper for the City of Memphis, a job he kept for over 40 years, even after the folk revival hit and he began performing and recording again. This album is one of his earliest revival efforts and remains one of his strongest recordings to date. DYLAN, BOB The Karen Wallace Tape, May 1960
Minneapolis/St. Paul, May 1960: a young Bob Dylan, still known as Robert Zimmerman and not yet even 19 years old, decides to drop out of college to move to New York City and pursue a career in folk music. That same month he plays a small gathering at Karen Wallace's apartment in St. Paul -- Karen's sister, Terri, was an early fan and supporter of Dylan's -- mostly covering American folk and blues standards, which he'd become obsessed with since starting at the University. Still a few years before his self-titled debut, this tape is one of the earliest documents of early Dylan, and since Karen Wallace attempted to sell the tape for $10,000 in the 1970s and subsequently disappeared along with the tape, its life is another great story in the history of Bob Dylan, one of the most enigmatic and idiosyncratic celebrities of the 20th century. 180 gram vinyl.

LAWRENCE Illusion CD
John Thorp on Lawrence's Illusion: "Lawrence makes a full-length return to his own Dial label with Illusion. Following two critically-acclaimed albums for Mule Musiq, the follow-up to 2016's Yoyogi Park (MUSIQ 054CD/196LP) captures the Berlin-based artist, DJ, and label-owner at home in a suitably deep landscape of sound. Throughout, his involving and human approach to electronic music feels more inviting and more necessary than ever. Rather than the dancefloors across Europe that Lawrence has so fruitfully soundtracked over the past few decades, the sound of Illusion is inspired not only by his endless, constantly unfolding creative process, but a flurry of underground club gigs overseas including Japan and Mexico. In these close spaces, warmth and intimacy generate the atmosphere, and Illusion is naturally blessed with a typically delicate touch that might surprise even long-time devotees of the artist. On close listen, acoustic instruments and subtle field recordings provide a natural bedfellow to Lawrence's typically warm, earthy machine sound. Another influence is the artist's real-time live project, Sky Walking, and their shows in intimate venues such as Berlin's Acud and the legendary Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg. After pulling back the stage curtain with the mellow and inviting 'Crystal', the bubbling Lawrence grooves are quickly established on 'Treasure Box', alongside a complex but seductive tapestry of both electronic and acoustic sound. Before long the buoyant synths that drive 'Yu Yu' melt sensitively into a rich wash of strings. The second half of Illusion conjures somewhat darker magic, tunneling more so into the darker, psychedelic impulse within Lawrence's synthesis. 'Transitions' establishes an eerie atmosphere that's complemented by 'Dark Swirl', in which a deep, bottom-heavy bass line dances around a dense, atmospheric forest of effects. The record concludes with perhaps it's greatest moments of potential physical delight. 'Montreux' divulges it's details gradually yet beautifully, anchored by a powerful kick, while 'Creepers' finishes the show with a deeply resonant, melodic and altogether transcendent trip, a full-scale but understated soothing of the body and mind. Continuing his story as one of the most accomplished producers in electronic music, Illusion finds Lawrence reflecting inward, back where he began. Able to conjure quietly breathtaking moments out of thin air, the intriguing effect of Lawrence's music continues to resonate."

CURSES Romantic Fiction LP
Romantic Fiction, the debut LP from Curses, is an honest musical expression drawing influences from his youth growing up in NYC in the '80s. References to new wave, post-punk, synth music and early EBM are skillfully merged with the DIY approach of punk and rock n' roll angst. Brandishing an immersive sonic palette, all instruments throughout the album were played and recorded by the artist. Exhausted by the current state of competitive dance music monotony, Romantic Fiction is a collection of songs, not DJ tools; songs that work at home, but also in the club should the right crowd beckon. It's about escapism and finding comfort in the unknown, fulfilling the empty void by embracing the mysterious. Darkness is a light undiscovered, not something to be frightened of. Curses invites friends who share a mutual love for incorporating post punk and new wave into contemporary electronic music. Perel delivers mighty Nina Hagen-esque operatic punk vocals on the first single, "Gold & Silber", whilst Dischi Autunno label boss Jennifer Cardini and Curses share a duet on the cold wave silk of "Silence In The Dark". As an amalgamation of influences from multiple decades, Romantic Fiction is a deeply personal album, triggering a feeling that is unnerving at times, familiar and welcoming at others.

COOPER, MIKE Tropical Gothic LP
It's 2018 and it's time for some new discoveries into Mike Cooper's limitless exploration in his collection of guitars. The title itself, Tropical Gothic references Cooper's beloved areas of "the South" with a Gothic, dark, remote interplay... he explains: ''Tropical Gothic includes, but is by no means limited to, a reflection on a region where European colonial powers fought intensively against indigenous populations and against each other for control of land and resources.'' On each side, Mike Cooper studies different approaches to his method of uniting guitar and field recordings into a constant stream of sound, where he delivers chaos and melody -- not necessarily in that order. Side A is composed of shorter pieces. Each of them offers a myriad of images and sensations, between the enigmatic and terror ("The Pit"), joy, happiness and freedom ("Running Naked") or pure contemplation ("Onibaba"). "Onibaba" runs as a fitting introduction to Side B and its 18th minute magical piece "Legong/Gods Of Bali". A mix of ambient exotica music, silent film soundtrack and distorted rhythms that dance around Mike's guitar. It keeps reinventing and transforming itself throughout those eighteen minutes, summing up the dexterity and muscle of Mike Cooper's music of the last two decades. With another grand collage artwork by Evan Crankshaw.

MAZZOCCHETTI, MAOUPA Gag Flag LP
After scrawling his name on releases with close affiliates the Mannequin (Laugh Tool, MNQ 080LP, 2016) and Unknown Precept (A-Tranquility, PRECEPT 003EP, 2014), new Brussels transplant Maoupa Mazzocchetti finds good company among the oddballs on Editions Gravats for Gag Flag's blend of avant-dance music and absurdist experimental pop. For Gag Flag, Mazzocchetti adopts the persona of "Snippet Boy", a fictional avatar who first came to life in his live shows, and now on the album sleeve. Lurking behind this persona, Mazzocchetti becomes an art-dance-pop puppeteer who yanks the listener's strings and takes popshots at industry overproduction, deflating egotism and hackneyed convention in a way that echoes the subversive approach of his heroes such as Devo and The Residents. Using a blend of plugged-in and acoustic instruments, Mazzocchetti conjures nine psychedelically misshapen and inexorably funked-up grooves, splashing from the lysergic swagger of "Looking For Cheese" to the Arabian electro-acid styles of "How To Hate You Without H?" via the lap-steel dancehall slosh of "Ron's Roof", demented yacht-boogie in "Fonk Left The Ytown", and what sounds like Depeche Mode doing knackered EBM on "Sultan 1997". This is the sound of an artist unafraid to pursue their own sound and really coming into their own, albeit channeled thru a deflated, winking rubber avatar. Edition of 300.

VA Sky Girl 2LP
2018 repress. Sky Girl is a mysteriously unshakeable companion, a deeply melancholic and sentimental journey through folk-pop, new wave and art music micro presses that span 1961-1991. It's a DIY collection of different genres, from different countries across different decades, that are all bound by the same longing sentiment. A concept compilation! A seemingly disparate suite of selections of forgotten fables by more or less never-knowns, Sky Girl forms a beautifully coherent and utterly sublime whole deftly compiled by French collectors DJ Sundae and Julien Dechery. From Scott Seskind's adolescent musical road movie to Karen Marks' icy Oz-wave, the charming DIY storytelling of Italian-American go-getter Joe Tossini and the ethereal slow dance themes of Parisian artists Nini Raviolette and Hugo Weris, Sky Girl resonates on a wide spectrum historically, geographically and stylistically. It unites in a singular, longing, almost intangible ambience. If the names sound wholly unfamiliar that doesn't matter, the nature of the compositions swiftly nurtures an intimacy with these lonely, poignant, openhearted wanderers. Most were available in a very limited capacity at the time of their release, some were never really released at all - Gary Davenport declined to release "Sarra" after he split with the girl for whom the track is named - years later a friend convinced Davenport to allow him to put 100 copies online to sell and DJ Sundae was quick enough to snare one. Beyond their scarcity, these tracks are bound together by a certain raw beauty that's achievable when music is made and no one is listening. Sky Girl comprises of fifteen officially licensed songs, a two year international scavenger hunt through long-folded home label operations, the depths of internet forums and traceless acetates. Both compilers are well trained record sleuths - DJ Sundae's labels Hollie and Idle Press have reissued Arthur Russell affiliate Nirosta Steel and DIY relic Pitch, while Julien Dechery previously compiled Fire Star, a retrospective on Tamil film composer Ilaiyaraaja, for Bombay Connection. Released by popular NTS show "Noise In My Head" offshoot Efficient Space, Sky Girl is enriched with artwork from Perks and Mini mutant Misha Hollenbach and appropriately elegant sleeve notes courtesy of Ivan Smagghe. Includes digital download. Also features: Linda Smith, Bruce Langhorne, The Seraphims, Some of My Best Friends Are Canadians, The Rising Storm, Warfield Spillers, Joyce Heath, Angel, Nora Guthrie and Once.

MYTHIC SUNSHIP Another Shape Of Psychedelic Music 2LP
Double LP version. Mythic Sunship's sound has been described as "the ethos of free jazz in a doom setting". On Another Shape Of Psychedelic Music, recorded and mixed in the studio of Causa Sui's Jonas Munk, the band goes even further and lets saxophone burn into the mix. It's a wildfire of ideas that travel far on a smoky haze of cosmic krautrock, stoner, doom, heavy psych, modal jazz and even drifts into Afrobeat. Jonas Munk joins these live sessions on guitar on a few tracks as well, making up a screaming cacophony of three guitars, bass, drums, and saxophone. Aptly titled Another Shape Of Psychedelic Music, this is just not a record of psychedelic music; it's also an album about psychedelic music. The very fabric of psych music seems to materialize in all its shapes and sizes and then vaporize right in front of your ears as the album burns further towards the final groove. Few bands would be able to pull this off, but Mythic Sunship maintain a down-to-earth melted vibe, even at their most ferocious. Making this album good both for zoning out as well as for pure rock catharsis. Groovy.

VALLE, MARCOS Nova Bossa Nova CD
Up until Nova Bossa Nova, Marcos Valle's first release for Far Out Recordings originally released in 1997, Marcos Valle hadn't released an album for well over a decade. After 1983, he resented the way the music industry had changed with commercialization and new demands curtailing his creative freedom. This was until 1994 when Marcos met Far Out Recordings boss Joe Davis and they recorded a track for Far Out's first Friends From Rio album. This new collaborative partnership resulted in a new solo album, which commenced recording in 1996. Nova Bossa Nova brought Marcos bouncing back into the '90s, slotting nicely in place alongside the acid jazz movement as well as a voracious new demand for Brazilian music on dancefloors from London to Tokyo. It was witnessing the London club scene's growing appetite for Brazilian music, as well as a lack of new sounds coming out of Brazil at the time, that a young Joe Davis put in a proposal to record a new album with one of his musical idols. Joe wanted to facilitate an album which would combine the latest technologies and production techniques, with live to analog tape recording: a Marcos Valle album tailor-made for London's clubs. Always open to modern influences and possibilities, Marcos agreed to the project, and Joe and his production partner Roc Hunter flew to Rio in '96. The record wasn't released until '98, as the original ½ inch tapes were stolen from Far Out's London studio, meaning parts of the album had to be re-recorded. Nova Bossa Nova was unveiled at the peak of the of the Brazilian movement, the record would also prove to be something of a revolution, inspiring a new generation of artists like Bebel Gilberto, Sabrina Malheiros, Da Lata, and Bossacucanova, who continued to fuse Brazilian influences with modern electronic sounds. The album takes a panoramic view of Valle's career, which was so fundamental in defining the standard of bossa back in the sixties and continues to do so to this day. "Nova Bossa Nova", the album's title track is an update on Marcos's trademark style, developing a more modern, funkier sound. Other gems include the dancefloor ready re-work of his 1970 hit "Freio Aerodynamico", and the smooth instrumentals "Bar Ingles", a jazz fusion looper, and the sun-soaked samba "Nordeste".

FREITAS, AMARO Rasif LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; includes download. In the sweltering North-Eastern Brazilian state of Pernambuco lies the coastal city of Recife, Amaro Freitas is pioneering the new sound of Brazilian jazz. From the Afro-Brazilian maracatu born on the sugar plantations of slavery, to the high intensity carnival rhythms of frevo and baião, the young pianist's heavily percussive approach to jazz is as indebted to these Pernambuco traditions as it is to Coltrane, Parker, and Monk. As with many of the greats before him, Amaro began playing piano in church aged 12, under the instruction of his father, leader of the church band. He won a place at the prestigious Conservatório Pernambucano de Música but had to drop out as his family could not spare the money for the bus fare. Undeterred, Amaro gigged in bands at weddings and worked in a call center to fund his tuition. The transformative moment came at age 15 when Amaro stumbled across a DVD of Chick Corea concert. Despite not actually owning a piano, Amaro devoted himself to studying day and night. By the age of 22 Amaro was one of the most sought-after musicians in Recife and resident pianist at the legendary jazz bar, Mingus. He met and begun collaborating with bassist Jean Elton and the found drummer Hugo Medeiros. The Amaro Freitas Trio was born. "I want to show the simplicity of music, to break the stigma that the piano is for a particular social class." Following his critically acclaimed debut album Sangue Negro ("Black Blood"), the title of his sophomore release Rasif is a colloquial spelling of Amaro's home town. A love letter to his native northeast, Amaro explores its traditional rhythms through the jazz idiom, employing complex mathematical patterns reminiscent of some of the most challenging works by fellow Brazilian masters Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, and Moacir Santos. "Dona Eni" is a scorching reconstruction of the baião rhythmic structure, played in seven measures instead of two. Title track "Rasif" is a serene homage to the coastal reef and its ecosystems. "Aurora" is a suite of three parts, representing the sun's journey from the light and soft of the rise. Personnel: Amaro Freitas - piano; Hugo Medeiros - drums and percussion; Jean Elton - double bass; Henrique Albino - baritone sax, flutes, and clarinet.

ATTRAKTTA Echo Principle LP
Focusing on low-slung IDM, acid, and atmospheric electro with nods to krautrock and ambient sounds, Steve Hyland's Attraktta project gets an extended outing on the Film label. Across eight beautifully produced tracks, Hyland -- one of the founding members of AI Records and subsequently Concrete Plastic -- explores vibrant synthesis and intricate drum programming, with the music arriving at a sweet spot between home listening material and club-ready workouts for more intelligent dancefloors. Eschewing straightforward synth sequences in favor of blissed-out, almost disharmonious sonics, Hyland transmits a curious psychedelia on Echo Principle, his debut LP. Sounds pitch and warp organically, buoyed up by saturated low-end and punchy drum machine percussion. There remains a decidedly accomplished precision to the work, though -- with the music bearing all the hallmarks of an artist of some considerable experience -- testament to the British producer and label head's 19 years working in the industry. A colorful, exquisitely composed LP that riffs on a timeless production aesthetic with considerable style, Echo Principle is a fantastic entry into the Film discography. 140 gram vinyl; Matte UV varnish; Includes download code with bonus track.

GUZMAN, GEORGE Introducing George Guzman LP
"It was 1968 when Fania Records President, Jerry Masucci, received a phone call from conguero George Guzman, inviting Jerry to listen to his band. Jerry turned the project over to Harvey Averne, who later reported to Jerry that the band was 'out of sight' and suggested that Masucci sign them up. A short time later, things became complicated for George and his band. First of all, the lead singer was drafted into the military, leaving George high and dry. By the time a replacement was found, George learned that his trumpet player was leaving to join another orchestra, so the search was on for his replacement. One problem led to another and before you knew it several months had gone by before George was finally ready to enter the studio and begin recording. Thanks to George and Harvey's perseverance, Introducing George Guzman was released in time for George to join the fray of Boogaloo bands that had brightened up the night scene in New York City in 1968." --Bobby Marin

MAYTALS, THE Monkey Man 7"
"7 inch singles were instrumental to the development of the Jamaican music industry, more affordable than full lengths for the consumer, they also allowed the labels to turnaround what was being recorded into music played from their booming sound systems as quickly as possible. In that spirit, Get On Down will be reissuing some of the most crucial Jamaican sides on 45, starting with The Maytals 'Monkey Man.' Recorded in 1969, the cut was a smash hit in Jamaica and hit number 47 when released in the UK in early 1970. 'Monkey Man' went on to be highly influential on the British Two-Tone movement of the later 70s with The Specials offering up a ripping version of the cut on their 1979 debut. The B Side, 'Night And Day', though not a chart-burner, is certainly one of the most solid rock-steady cuts you'll ever encounter rife with bubbly keys, tight snares and Toots Hibbert's incredibly soulful vocals."

"This time out, it's The Upsetter Lee Perry with his spaghetti western-inspired 'Return of Django' featuring some great sax work from Val Bennett. VELVET CRUSH In The Presence Of Greatness LP
Glass Modern present a reissue of In The Presence Of Greatness, the debut Velvet Crush LP from 1991, originally released on Creation Records. In The Presence Of Greatness was recorded and mixed on eight tracks by Matthew Sweet in his basement in Princeton, New Jersey 1990-91. Repackaged in a new sleeve with photographs from the original session by Michael Lavine. 180 gram pressing on turquoise vinyl. "In the Presence of Greatness sounds like Big Star's #1 Record updated for a new decade. The general air of mildly anguished wistfulness is the same, as are the jangly guitars and high harmonies, but Velvet Crush plays with a post-punk sprightliness and a less overtly British Invasion-inspired melodic sense." --Stewart Mason, AllMusic.

This is their third album, recorded in Berlin in January / February 2018 with the studio collaboration of Kristof Hahn from Swans at the lap steel guitar. Songs were composed by M.G. THIS IS WHERE This Is Where LP
Collaborative project of Algis Kizys, Norman Westberg, and Lynn Wright. Having previously released a limited-edition cassette tape in 2016 under the name of ALN, their self-titled album for Hallow Ground is to be considered the three-piece's definite studio debut as This Is Where. Recorded and mixed by Kizys, This Is Where delves even deeper into the psychedelic and at times cosmic drone sound previously to be heard in the New York City-based trio's live recordings. As a logical next step after what the Swans guitarist Westberg has presented on recent solo albums like The All Most Quiet for Hallow Ground (HG 1605CD/LP, 2016), it integrates three distinct musical visions into a whirling ocean of sound. This Is Where's sound is neither dominated by the thundering brutalism of Swans nor the gloomy doom pop of Wright's Bee And Flower. Instead Kizys, Westberg, and Wright use delay, reverb and effects to weave a pulsating web of sonic textures, moving effortlessly from dark depths to almost jubilant high notes. With Kizy's roaring bass guitar as a sonic backdrop, Westberg and Wright give rise to a musical dialogue marked by density and tension. Over the course of 40 minutes, This Is Where create a mesmerizing musical experience, divided into four discrete movements.

BJORK, BRANT Mankind Woman CD
Mankind Woman is the thirteenth solo record by Brant Bjork. Although this is indeed a Brant Bjork record it is the first record Brant Bjork solely collaborates with a producer and co-writer, his LowDesertPunkBand guitarist and friend, Bubba Dupree. Only Brant and Bubba wrote and performed the music along with guest appearances by bass player Armand Secco Sabal, Nick Oliveri, and vocalist Sean Wheeler who has been a touring member of the LowDesertPunkBand. In March of 2018, the recording took place at Zainaland, a creative Villa owned by Brant Bjork's wife, Zaina Alwan, in the California desert town of 29 Palms. The record was recorded and engineered by Yosef Sanborn who also owns and operates Massive FX pedals in Los Angeles. Multiple pedals designed by Yosef were used by Brant and Bubba for this record. Additional tracks were recorded by Bubba Dupree at Brant Bjork's home studio in Venice beach California. Brant Bjork and Bubba Dupree describe the sound of Mankind Woman as modern classic. It is evidently clear that both Brant and Bubba specialize in the craft of the sound and feel of the music spawned in the '60s and '70s and this record is undoubtedly a testament to this great era of song and sound, however the intention was not to try to recapture or mimic in retro terms these influences but to strive for a contemporary quality. Brant Bjork might have gone deeper in the lyrics than on any record before. Focusing on personal sensitivities, elite hypocrisies, racism, sexism, and the daily struggle to find peace, love, and understanding in today's American society. Once again, Brant Bjork makes here a record that reminds the listener that it was the ingredients of jazz, blues, and funk that makes rock music taste so good.

LYDMOR I Told You I'd Tell Them Our Story CD
Lydmor is Copenhagen-based Jenny Rossander, an electronic producer, composer, singer, songwriter and general troublemaker. I Told You I'd Tell Them Our Story is her third solo album, a multi-layered piece of modern electronic pop music. In her sounds and with her words, Rossander captures a reflective description of her surroundings and invites the listener to follow her on a very personal journey. After her first steps with her two solo albums (released in Denmark only to much applause), her first international release was Seven Dreams Of Fire (HFN 047CD/LP, 2015) as Lydmor & Bon Homme (with Tomas Høffding from WhoMadeWho). In 2016, Lydmor suddenly disappeared to Shanghai for several months. Her life in the Chinese metropolis inspired her to write a piece of modern electronic pop music which will be released as I Told You I'd Tell Them Our Story. With lots of initiative, Lydmor has made her dream come true to tour most of the world with her music. No matter if she plays an acclaimed festival, a famous club or the tiny living room of her greatest fans, every single one of Lydmor's shows means a highly intense experience. With her irresistible voice and unabashed honesty Lydmor places the little hooks of her melodies and lyrics into the electronic soundscape and she will flirt, dance, cry, scream and hug her way into your heart. After her first two albums, A Pile of Empty Tapes (2012) and Y (2015), Lydmor's new record will see her solo music released internationally for the first time by hfn music. I Told You I'd Tell Them Our Story is a rite of passage captured in intense moments experienced on the edge of the world and on the edge of one self. Lydmor lived in Shanghai for several months in 2016 and the Chinese metropolis inspired her to completely redefine her artistic expression and to write this new album.

CARETAKER, THE Everywhere At The End Of Time - Stage 5 2LP
The penultimate release in the series, Stage 5 of The Caretaker's Everywhere At The End of Time charts severe levels of musical/mental deterioration and sensory detachment through four extended, smudged and hallucinatory side-long pieces. Nearing the end, Stage 5 sees our protagonist enter a near-permanent state of confusion and horror. Mirroring the endemic deterioration of dementia's latter phases, one is pulled through the most extreme entanglements in the series so far; repetition and ruptures, barely maintaining a connection to waking life and a sense of self. In the most classic sense, one becomes witness to an abandonment and dissolution of ego, as the mulch of bygone 78s totally loses itself in a way that connotes misfiring synapses failing to properly relay information at advanced levels of the disease. It feels as though one's skull is being scraped out, uncovering hellish layers of accreted sensation and mulched imagery, occasionally recognizing calmer patterns, only for them to fray into the ether before it's possible to parse and dwell on them. At this point it's also perhaps worth pointing out the uncannily profound synchronicity between the timelines of Everywhere At The End of Time and Brexit, which both started in 2016 and are due to wrap up in spring 2019. It should be no stretch of the imagination to read into their parallel progression from nostalgia and historic/collective amnesia, to progressive dementia and complete obliteration of (the) sense(s). Mastered and cut by Lupo, artwork by Ivan Seal.

Over the past three years he has, with great success, played clubs throughout all of Europe. One extra-memorable gig was on last year's edition of Convenanza in the amphitheater in Sète, France. Treble Rebel is his first release on Höga Nord and the slightly psychedelic, sample- and synthesizer-based club music that has become Autarkic's trademark sound is captured by an impeccable production. The music is playful yet stripped down to the essentials and not overloaded. The vocal elements work more as percussive elements than the carrier of the storytelling in the music. If you missed him live this record gives a taste of Autarkic's hypnotic live performances!

Following on from 2017's heralded Killing Ghosts (HOMEN 091CD), as well his most recent collaboration with Stijn Hüwels as Silent Vigils, Fieldem (HOMEN 111CD, 2018), James Murray presents the long-player Falling Backwards. With a focus on childhood memories and the literal act of letting go, Falling Backwards is his most personal release to date. With its warbled tones and fractured melodies, it makes you feel as if you are in the midst of experience a pure science fiction; happily, and playfully lost in some other world. Falling Backwards is an album of incredible strength and hope, of personal tribulation and yet also triumph. It is a natural arc to the work of Killing Ghosts as it breaks the barrier of things hidden and withdrawn, and shouts from the rooftops with its forceful awakening as the album evolves. It is an electronic masterpiece, yet you would be hard-pressed to use the term "ambient" here as it does not attempt to hide in the shadows.

URUK Mysterium Coniunctionis CD
URUK comes from the meeting in 2016 of two totally unclassifiable musicians: Thighpaulsandra and Massimo Pupillo. Thighpaulsandra has an impressive track record particularly playing on many Coil albums. Traces of this influence can be found in the keyboards used on Mysterium Coniunctionis. You could randomly pick such masterpieces as the two volumes of Musick To Play In The Dark (1999) and Astral Disaster (1999), records that were and still are among the best ambient albums ever made. He has also made several records in his own name (including the unpredictable Double Vulgar) and was a member of the UUUU project, which also featured a particularly creative Graham Lewis (Wire). Massimo Pupillo is well-known for having slammed a lot of ears as the bassist with the highly imposing Italian jazzcore trio Zu (those who saw them on stage will understand). 2009's Carboniferous or the more recent 2014 collaboration with Eugene Robinson (Oxbow) still resonate for a lot of listeners. In 2016, Massimo was in Triple Sun (no doubt a reference to the splendid song by Coil, again) alongside two well-known musicians at Ici D'ailleurs: Raphaël Séguinier and David Chalmin (The Third Eye Foundation). URUK also and especially brought out their first album in 2017: I Leave A Silver Trail Through Blackness. This is an imposing piece of dark ambient music in which the two musicians proved that they are more than just the sum their respective experiences. They are sound explorers obsessed by grasping the detail that shifts listeners from one world to another. Their second album, Mysterium Coniunctionis makes direct reference to the eponymous and testamentary work of the psychiatrist Carl Jung, subtitled An Inquiry Into The Separation And Synthesis Of Psychic Opposites In Alchemy. It clearly reflects the duo's intention to create particularly immersive and meaningful music from supposedly opposing materials -- in this case the meeting of electronic and organic sounds. The record is released as part of Ici D'ailleurs's Mind Travels collection.

VA Suedehead: Reggae Classics 1971-1973 CD
The Suedehead sound of the early '70s followed the Skinhead style of the 1968-70 period. The notable difference could be seen and heard, the sharp jerky upbeat rhythms were slowing down a notch to what we'd soon be calling that early reggae sound. The tougher harder look of the Rude Boy/Skinhead style was relaxing a little to almost meet with the less frantic rhythms to a more slowed down groove like sound. The hair got a little longer, going from a Mark 1 to a Feather Cut style. The "Rude Boy Out of Jail" type lyrics were becoming more conscientious, this was another twist and turn in the ever evolving sound of Jamaican music, but what is certain is the artists and producers never disappointed us in this period . Here is a compilation of some tunes that the Suedehead crowd were grooving to. CONSTANT MONGREL Living In Excellence LP
Formed in 2009, Constant Mongrel began as a two-piece (Tom Ridgewell and Hugh Young) creating immediate and, at times, improvised songs in an old disheveled laundry in inner city Melbourne. Inspired by the more flamboyant side of protopunk such as Electric Eels and Chrome, over the next few years the band added members Amy Hill (bass) and Andrew Murray (guitar) building upon their intense sound and developing a unique humor. Consisting of members from Terry, Woollen Kits, Nun, and Taco Leg, Constant Mongrel has several previous releases on RIP Society Records and Siltbreeze Records. After three years since their last release Constant Mongrel have developed a diverse collection of songs gradually over time. Recorded in the summer of 2017 in a studio, produced by Tom Hardisty and mastered by Mikey Young, Living In Excellence brings a more formed sound and aesthetic with striking riffs and catchy rolling bass over an often unhinged, vibrant rhythm section. Added for this on particular tracks is a fried, effected saxophone with warm synths and analogue sounds added to enhance the LP's thoughtful textures. The new record has a sharper British post punk expression reminiscent of the usual suspects in Wire, Blitz, The Mob, Siekiera, and The Fall, while also exploring elements found outside of the genre from Les Rallizes Dénudés to youth crew hardcore to country music and beyond, there's greater depth and sensibility found amongst the angst. James Vinciguerra (of Total Control fame) designed the cover which is a perfect depiction of this modern-day punk record with its sharpness, color, and feeling of slight discomfort. The bands lyrics and themes vary in subject matter. Songs of certain romance, the monotonousness of self-loathing, the joy of a riot, atrocity of western religion, an abundance of a fresh modern fascism, white-middle-class-self-entitled guilt and the beauty in misinterpretation. But behind every idea the tongue remains continually in cheek as the bands humor seeps through and prevails in its sound. The truth is that no one is truly Living In Excellence and this false mantra is prominent throughout a record that is over flowing with character, bleak satire, and grunt.

KETTEL Myam James Part I 2LP
Reissue of Kettel's spectacular Myam James Part I, originally released as a CD on Sending Orbs in 2008. The Perennial Series is a new division of Lapsus Records and is dedicated to works from established artists in the universe of contemporary electronic music. As the name suggests, timeless music will form the cornerstone of the Perennial Series through pieces that have passed through numerous fashions and trends: musical treasures that have never been pressed to vinyl, decades old discontinued album reissues, or new artist releases that already form part of electronic music culture history. The first release in this new series will be from none other than Kettel, one of the label's favorite artists, and an integral piece of work in understanding IDM over the last 20 years. Reimer Eising needs no introduction; the well-established producer based in Groningen (Holland) has been releasing music for nearly two decades on respected labels including Planet Mu and Clone. In 2008 he released the spectacular Myam James Part I on Sending Orbs, the record label he has consistently worked with since its inception. The album -- which left electronica "headz" speechless -- is, in Lapsus Records' humble opinion, a masterpiece replete with acid, electro breaks, and the purest braindance style. Also includes "Mukudori", an unreleased track that Reimer composed during the same period, which was discarded for the final album version.

YOUNGE & ALI SHAHEED MUHAMMAD, ADRIAN The Midnight Hour (Instrumental) 2LP
"The Midnight Hour is Black excellence: an ode to the cultural sophistication that the Harlem Renaissance established for its people. The Midnight Hour is comprised of Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge, alongside a tight rhythm section and a full orchestra. Adrian and Ali began working on this album back in 2013, but put the project aside as they would score the hit Netflix series Marvel's Luke Cage. The Midnight Hour is a soul/jazz/hip hop album which continues the conversations started by yesterday's jazz and funk pioneers; those that created the bedrock of samples for hip hop producers in the 80s/90s. The Midnight Hour is sophisticated hip hop that fans will enjoy, capturing their jazz rhythm section, and full orchestra, to analog tape. The Midnight Hour is now available as full instrumentals on vinyl."

NORTON, DORIS Artificial Intelligence LP
Mannequin Records concludes its trilogy of reissues from the avant-garde Italian-born producer Doris Norton with Artificial Intelligence (1985). Apple's first music "endorsement" (Norton was also later a consultant for IBM) and early Roland affiliate, Doris Norton is one of the most important women pioneer in the use of synths and in the early electro/computer music. While the beat-oriented style of Norton's music aligns her with such global fellow-travelers as Yellow Magic Orchestra and Kraftwerk, her championing of the personal computer as a tool for self-sufficient musical creativity also connects her to musicians such as Pietro Grossi, Laurie Spiegel, and the League of Automatic Music Composers. Norton's predilection for the bright, glossy timbres of early digital instruments also recalls Hubert Bognermayr and Harald Zuschrader's bizarre Erdenklang (1982). A year on from Personal Computer (MNQ 120LP, 2018), Norton released Artificial Intelligence in 1985, setting a step up in her deep electronic music research and innovation."The whole album was composed and programmed only with the alphanumerical keyboard of the computer. The total of the notes and coded events takes to the number 124,648: of these 123,827 were coded with 'step time' procedure and the rest with real-time procedure. Having reduced the keyboard, Norton used only a hexaphonic JX.8P with memory processed by her and interfaced to the computer. No drums were used, neither electronic nor much less acoustic. All the rhythms were obtained by A.D.A. conversions and processing of wave ranges with the use of expanders with a very special handling of envelopes, frequency, resonance, and noise. Doris Norton fed the computer the parameters of vowels and consonants of her own voice, like A, O, U, E, D, and N, through an A.D.A conversion card. By processing these values and assembling them in phonemes in hundreds of different combination, at various compressed resolutions she was able to make the computer sing a complete song in a totally human way (with the voice of Doris). Many other synth sounds resulting from A.D.A. conversions are present in Artificial Intelligence, amongst these: pipe organ, plate, electric discharge, iron beat, birds, dog, harp, and woods, all sampled and handled by the computer. Artificial Intelligence is a perfect example of how human intelligence can bend the coded 'artificial intelligence' to its own will." --ComputerMusik, 1985.

Marina Records celebrates its 25th anniversary with the release of Goosebumps. Founded by Stefan Kassel and Frank Lähnemann in Hamburg 25 years ago, Marina Records is not only known for its distinctive sleeve design, but also for its eclectic, unique artist roster and its devotion to classic pop songwriting. Kickstarting with Brent Cash's "Digging The Fault Line", Goosebumps features artists as diverse as exceptional Glasgow funk sextet Gazelle and Chris Thomson's beloved chamber pop outfit The Bathers -- to the lushly orchestrated Morricone-like soundscapes of Starless and jazz trumpeter Colin Steele. Steele gave the wonderful songs of The Pearlfishers the royal jazz treatment with exciting new arrangements. The Pearlfishers themselves contribute the previously unreleased "The Time Is Right". They also recorded a fantastic cover version of The Pale Fountains' "Southbound Excursion" under the name, The Pale Fishers -- another exclusive. The Pale Fountains themselves are featured with "The Norfolk Broads", a track from Longshot For Your Love (1998). Pale Fountains songwriter Michael Head makes a second appearance with "Dragonfly" from the Shack critically-acclaimed album Waterpistol, released by Marina in 1995. In 2001, Marina effectively initiated the reformation of sunshine pop legends The Free Design. "McCarran Airport" hails from their comeback album Cosmic Peekaboo (MA 052CD/LP, 2001). MSELEKU, BHEKI Celebration 2LP
"From the inheritor of John Coltrane's mouthpiece a re-integration of deep South African jazz roots with the Black Atlantic spiritual jazz continuum. Celebration's release trumpeted the emerging dawn of South Africa's epochal changes. Sainted and blessed, Bheki Mseleku appeared as the herald of a new era, a prophet of rebirth and reconnection. This is a work signalling change, a sign of a South African music that was properly reconnected with global currents. Recognizing Bheki as a kindred spirit to her late husband, Alice gave him the saxophone mouthpiece that John Coltrane had used during the recording of A Love Supreme. Coltrane was a permanent touchstone for the pianist, one of the few who Bheki felt had the same esoteric and spiritual focus as himself: 'the only musicians I know of who were deeply into this were Coltrane, and Pharoah and Sun Ra', he told an interviewer in 1992. While the idioms of post-Coltrane spirit jazz are certainly to the fore on Celebration, they are energized by a swift and original musical vision, quite specific to Bheki's music, in which whole musical systems -- the marabi and mbhaqanga jazz of the townships, American jazz, European classical, and more -- are seamlessly mended together by the pianist's quicksilver musical sensibility and legendary technical ability. Celebration was originally released on compact disc and cassette in the middle of 1992 by World Circuit. It was Bheki's first statement under his own name, and the first recorded presentation of his personal musical vision. This vision had been tempered across two decades which had combined intense professional playing with profound personal trials in both the spiritual and earthly domains, all set against the greater backdrop of South African political turmoil and exile in Europe. The band brought together musicians hailing from three signally important points within the interconnected, communicating spaces of the Black Atlantic continuum: North America, post-colonial Britain, and southern Africa. With them, Mseleku created the first major South African-led musical statement to be produced after the sufferance of exile was ended. The ultimate and most egregious remnant of the centuries-long colonial era, apartheid, was finally being dismantled as they played. At this critical point, Mseleku's musical spirit work, channeled from a higher source, spoke of a time to come where all divisions might be transcended by a greater unity."

The music presented on Framed Space: Selected Works 2014-2017 consists of a selection of works from the first three years of Melody As Truth. The first disc features the work of Jonny Nash, comprising of tracks from Phantom Actors (2014), Exit Strategies (MAT 002LP, 2015), and Eden (MAT 006LP, 2017). Two unreleased tracks feature on the disc, "Treasure" and "Sayan". "Treasure" was recorded with Gigi Masin in 2014. "Sayan" was recorded in Bali, during the same recording sessions as those that resulted in Eden. The second disc features Diego Herrera's work as Suzanne Kraft, comprising of tracks from Talk From Home (2015) and What You Get For Being Young (2016). Two unreleased tracks also feature on the disc, "Meetings" and "Seven Day Turnaround". "Meetings" was recorded in Amsterdam shortly after Herrera relocated to the city in 2015. "Seven Day Turnaround" was made during the What You Get For Being Young sessions, also in 2015. Both Nash and Herrera now live in Amsterdam, where they continue to exchange ideas and experiment on new works for MAT. The music on Framed Space is intended to give the listener an insight into the first chapter of an ongoing story. Double-CD featuring four previously unreleased tracks, exclusive to this set."So far, his Melody As Truth label has been geared along exactly those lines. Modest in sound and scope, yet unusually committed to its cozy parameters, the Amsterdam label has, in its three-year run, dedicated itself exclusively to quiet, contemplative ambient experiments by Nash and his friend Suzanne Kraft (aka Diego Herrera, a former Los Angeleno now also based in Amsterdam). Each release so far has offered a snapshot of a process or a mood. Nash's 2014 EP Phantom Actors was a set of limpid new age studies for synth and piano that could have been mistaken for a lost Mark Isham demo. The following year, his Exit Strategies modeled itself upon the liquid guitars of the Durutti Column and Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie. Kraft's 2015 album Talk From Home, meanwhile, tackled airy synth-and-guitar miniatures, while last year's masterful What You Get for Being Young used similar sounds, just fewer of them, and ended up being as evocative, and elusive, as the scent of a crisp autumn morning." --Philip Sherburne on Passive Aggressive (MAT 008LP, 2017), Pitchfork

ERLANDSSON, MATS Hypodermic Letters CD
Mats Erlandsson's new collection of sound work, Hypodermic Letters, released on Portal Editions, embodies a vast array of sonic multiplicities, seamlessly blending texturized harmonicities with harmonized textures. Like light magically made audible, while in continuous disintegration, oscillating between the real and the illusory, the works contained in Hypodermic Letters insistently highlights the in-between only to forcefully push us to the beyond. By challenging conventional ways of structuring the sensory into categories, e.g. the pure and the impure, the changing and the unchanging, or the unitary and the manifold, Erlandsson's work provides an opportunity to let go and to dwell in unstructured phenomenality. Hypodermic Letters is a shimmering interplay of the extremely remote and the radically proximate, the vast and the intimate. A sense of substantial materiality and referential stability is established momentarily only to face its immediate dissolution. Erlandsson's use of ambiguity reveals a fundamental fragility at the core of certainty. But fear not, although elegantly masquerading as ambiguity, the dominating affective state of Erlandsson's Hypodermic Letters is that of clarity. The instrumentation of Hypodermic Letters is a careful combination of synthesized sounds, all of which were generated by analog means, recorded acoustic sounds of stringed instruments and the employment of algorithmic processing techniques. Erlandsson's display of the molding of multi-stable textures with continuities of intervallically modulating modalities ultimately lends itself to a listening experience as intense as it is pure: a non-referential melancholia, a sorrow beyond sorrow. With close attention to the most subtle facets of the sonic and a use of intonation and tuning as an integral part not only of harmony, but of the total field of sound itself, Erlandsson's work makes us aware -- that is, if you truly listen -- of your capacity to enter worlds, or modes of being, and perhaps more importantly, of our capacity to leave our dysfunctional constructions behind.

CRIPPA, ROBERTO SELENIC CD
In the four years since Italian-born, London-based artist Roberto Crippa released his acclaimed album Reverse on We Can Elude Control (WCEC 010LP, 2014), Crippa has been lurking amongst London streets at night slowly developing alchemical thoughts which would cast the ten shadows that make up SELENIC. Whereas Reverse can be viewed as an introspective album constructed as a set of individual audio "objects", SELENIC is an album gazing out into the world, relentlessly exposing and toying with its very fabric. Painstakingly assembled over a number of years, SELENIC is an album of immense power and subtly conceived amongst the silver reflections witnessed amongst the silent lustrous environment that surrounds everyone at night. A visceral auditory experience rendering itself from the numerous collapsed and recomposed forms of quantified electronic outlay: rhythm, ambience, and concrete all configured to construct an amorphous narrative based work where each piece unfolds as a mutated container of previous identities. Distinctive in development, design, and execution, SELENIC stands as a solitary gesture of Crippa's idiosyncratic experimental research.

While not a direct continuation from that, the music enveloping this debut captures the vibe and essence of the more ambient and experimental moments found in Altar Of Plagues, most notably on that final album. Bliss Signal is also a different a new musical expression coming from Kelly's musical repertoire. GEVURAH Sulphur Soul LP
LP version. "Sulphur Soul, the latest offering from Canadian black metal unit Gevurah, continues and builds upon the promise laid down with their 2016 debut album Hallelujah!, one of that year's most recognized albums within the scene. With this album, the band continues to explore their more aggressive and punishing aspects while conjuring even more complex and challenging realms. The four hymns that encompass these thirty-two minutes present some of the band's most intense and uncompromising material yet and shows how the Montreal-based duo encircle their sonic palette with a new heightened sense of brutality and atmosphere, all the while upholding their trademark dark essence and transcendental spiritual aura."

JAH STITCH Watch Your Step Youthman CD
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Jah Stitch's Watch Your Step Youthman, originally released in 1977. After a disjointed childhood that saw him raised largely by two aunts between eastern Kingston and rural St Mary, Melbourne James became the toaster Jah Stitch after running away from home and linking with the Spanglers street gang, whose Princess Street headquarters was also the base of the popular Tipper Tone sound system. After cutting his teeth on Tipper Tone alongside Big Youth and Dr Alimantado, friction over financial recompense saw him forming the rival Black Harmony set in 1975, but because the new sound was based in a district that was on the other side of the political divide, Stitch was shot in the face at point-blank range, his miraculous survival immortalized in the Bunny Lee-produced hit, "No Dread Can Dead", which became the title track of Stitch's debut album. Watch Your Step Youthman was the follow-up set released by Bunny in 1977, and again places Jah Stitch's understated Rasta-oriented chanting over a set of rock-hard Aggrovators rhythms, recorded with Johnny Clarke, John Holt, Derrick Morgan, and others.

ELECTRIC CITIZEN Helltown LP
LP version. "Helltown, the forthcoming third album by Electric Citizen is, in many ways, a homecoming. While the title may seem fittingly metal (if not exceedingly so), it actually has real relevance: Helltown, while also multidimensional, is named after the Cincinnati, OH, neighborhood in which the band lives, practices, and where the album was written, recorded and mixed. Now known more prosaically as Northside, Helltown earned its name in the 1800s due to its reputation for rowdy taverns frequented by the neighborhood of factory workers and immigrants. Inasmuch as this album is an ode to the band's home and its buried past, it also represents a return to the grittier sound of their 2014 debut, Sateen. Furthermore, it marks the return of original bassist Nick Vogelpohl, who rejoins vocalist Laura Dolan, guitarist Ross Dolan and drummer Nate Wagner. It's a fun, tough, dirty rock 'n' roll album. The band's 2016 album Higher Time was an expansive and somewhat cleaner effort mixed by Black Keys engineer Collin Dupuis. It was a landmark moment for the band earning considerable press praise?Consequence Of Sound named it in the 20 Most Anticipated Albums of 2016 with "the most breakout potential of all the young bands on this list." And, the band's endless touring since the first album earned them stints opening for acts like Pentagram, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Fu Manchu, Budos Band, and Wolfmother. What sets Electric Citizen apart from contemporary heavy counterparts is their songwriting. The band writes concise, three-minute, heavy rock songs. While others might now be following suit, when they started, most bands of their ilk were content writing drawn-out slow doom dirges. Regardless, none can deliver quite like Electric Citizen: Laura Dolan's captivating star-power, Ross Dolan's perfect tone and riffs, Wagner's pugilistic and swinging beats, glued together by Vogelpohl's gliding bass lines."

Eponymous Resident DJs Klaus Stockhausen and the later on globally known Boris Dlugosch take a close look back at that time, guiding you through the history, the early beginnings and absolute key moments on (house music) club culture. 37 (!) legendary tracks -- many of which have not been on sale forever -- that mark the masterclass sound of that Era and could be an essential start or -- end -- point to any great collection. On the one hand, because its story hasn't been told yet and it's worth telling. On the other, German clubs like Robert Johnson or Berghain -- as divergent as they are -- both resemble Front's spirit, diversity and musical open mindedness. Trivial Occupations is the third LP released under Francis Harris's own name and continues in the traditions of Leland (SAT 005LP, 2012) and Minutes of Sleep (SAT 015LP, 2014). Here Harris dives deep into a new sound palette, bringing the listener on a journey through various states over the almost one hour run time. The album was made over the course of four years in various studios with an array of notable players, bringing a diversity of perspectives and approaches encompassed within Harris's stunning artistic studio approach. It was mixed at Jack White's Third Man Studios with the help of long-time collaborator and friend, Bill Skibbe. It's an album that is easy to get lost in its structure suggesting no real beginning or end. Listening to it on loop offers the listener a chance to be fully immersed in the rich, melancholic tonalities of Harris's sound universe. Guest musicians include Dave Harrington ((One half of Darkside with Nicolas Jaar) guitar, bass), Will Shore (vibraphone), Greg Paulus ((No Regular Play), trumpet)), Emil Abramyan (cello), Léah Lazonick (piano), Genevieve Marentette (vocals), Rob Reddy (tenor sax), and Kaïssa (vocals).

VA Scotch Bonnet Presents: Puffer's Choice Vol. II LP
LP version. Following the success of 2016's Puffer's Choice Vol. I (SCOB 007CD/LP), the label arm of Glasgow's Mungo's Hi-Fi has selected more cream cuts from their globe-trotting link-ups celebrating sound system culture. The album starts with Bim Sherman. "Lightning And Thunder" is a Mungo's remix of a vocal supplied by Adrian Sherwood. French collective Subactive's aquatic dub imagining of "Follow Me" by UK garage/grime project Wolves, featuring the voice of Bo* Johnson. Supercat straddles Chief Rockas's update of the classic Gunshot riddim for a reprise of Don Dada's 1982 hit "Dance Inna New York". The vibes then travel bang up-to-date with a sparse Mungo's fix of ethereal singer-songwriter Nem's 2017 eco-breakout "Purest Force". Jamaican chanter Isha Bel is given a belly-battering bass blend by Aquarius. General Jah Mikey, channeling Burning Spear for his own "Ites, Green & Gold", rides a deft digital riff by bald-head New Zealand-based super-producer Naram. Danny T & Tradesman build an industrial-strength base for anti-violence lament "Up Deh": a rare vocal outing from Iration Steppas' Mark Iration. Then it's time for Poland's Dreadsquad to ease the pressure with swinging one-drop vibraphone instrumental "Space". JA meets "Glasgae" for "Feel Good", an uplifting collaboration between Jamaican singer Skari and Scottish producer Escape Roots. Earl 16, wraps his pipes around Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart", helmed hauntingly by Capitol 1212. Scotch Bonnet's own Thomas Stalawa gets everyone marching to a beat inspired by Steely & Clevie's "Dem Bow", as dangerous Spanish emcee Ponchita Peligros demands all in attendance "Run The Calypso". The album ends with a request from un-categorizable Israeli collective Trillion featuring General G that puffers choose wisely -- via anti-cigarette missive "No Nicotine".

RUE ROYALE In Parallel CD
Over a decade into their musical life as Rue Royale, Brookln and Ruth Dekker are back with In Parallel, an album of bold, rhythmic, and sometimes haunting songs born from a time of beauty and tumult. The album was done with the help from Sean Carey (Bon Iver, S. Carey) whose rhythmic inventiveness adds a new texture to Rue Royale's music. The Nottingham-based Anglo-American duo have paid their dues with 1,000+ shows in 16 countries. In 2014, the pair took an enforced period of time off the road. After seven years of virtually non-stop life on-the-road, they needed a breather. Instead, they had a baby. Being joined in life by a daughter, the oft-clichéd pleasure and pain of child rearing became real at home whilst paying the bills and facing up to political upheavals in their dual home countries with Trump and Brexit. "We're conscious that things have maybe taken a bit longer to kick into gear again than we, and those who follow us, anticipated," says Ruth. "We're now embracing our differing perceptions and balancing imbalances. We're moving forward with a confidence and a sort of wide-angle view comprised of our parallel-realities, exploring these themes and feelings in In Parallel." CD version comes in four-sided digipack.

Odd Beholder, the project of Zurich-based musician Daniela Weinmann, releases its full-length debut album All Reality Is Virtual. All Reality Is Virtual is an intelligent, tenderly flowing and weird pop album, colorful, assertive. It deals with the strange temptations of our time: from Tinder to AI, from offline loneliness to obsessive self-marketing. "I noticed that the main temptation of a digitalized life is the idea that everything can be measured, recorded and therefore known", says Weinmann. "But I yearn for surprise, for wonder. The unknown, the uncontrollable is appealing to me". Odd Beholder have released two highly acclaimed EPs already, Lighting (2016) and Atlas (SINNBUS 068EP, 2017), followed by the Remixes EP (2018). Those remixes have been contributed by friends made along the way and artists of which Odd Beholder became fans: The/Das, Fejká, Hundreds, Alessandro Giannelli, Kalipo, and Thomas Atzmann. MUSCI/GIOVANNI VENOSTA, ROBERTO A Noise, A Sound 2LP
Soave present a reissue of Roberto Musci and Giovanni Venosta's A Noise, A Sound, originally released in 1992. The third episode of the alchemical association between Roberto Musci and Giovanni Venosta, reprinted for the first time. This work seems to be even more enigmatic than the previous ones. The "plunderphonics" style of the compositional process, significant to allowing a technical experimentalism of inexhaustible variety of materials used (compendium of sounds, harmonies, ethnic timbres) and the infinite possibilities of assembly between non-sense and provocation, still remains. You might be almost stimulated to guess -- in the articulated sound architectures of the tracks -- every single fragment of popular or cultured music from every part of the world (Asia, Africa, Middle East, South America) related to the ad hoc inserts of polyphonic instrumentation distorted and dazed. The music expressed is basically a polyhedral pataphysical gaze on the complexity of the existing, an immersion in the contradictory forces of reality; the attentive listener will be able to recognize the tortuous and magical lines of a free and imaginative artistic creation, which is absolutely counter-current and unconventional. Comes in gatefold sleeve.

MUSLIMGAUZE Ingaza 2LP
Staalplaat presents a double LP reissue of Muslimgauze's Ingaza, originally released in 1999 (the year of his death) as part of the Box Of Silk And Dogs set. Those not familiar with Bryn Jones's style will listen slack-jawed at the sheer anticipatory nature of his sound collages. He was a cult artist, politically motivated for the Arab-Palestinian cause and a seminal experimenter with ethnic samples' and minimal and electronic rhythms. The atmospheres retain their original charm, full and gloomy, but pulsating with provocative emotions, different from the exotic and ornamental processing of certain world music. Drum machines, old synths, and percussion are all combined in a traditional way, without any computer assistance. "Peace is a distant dream," said Bryn Jones, in one of his last interviews before passing away from a rare blood disease, and on both sizes things seem to unfortunately still be the same. Ingaza is thematically and stylistically all over the place, sporting atmospheric instrumental loops one moment and jarring, heavily barbed and distorted beats the next. Differences between tracks, not unlike changing channels on television or switching between net browsers, predominate, with imagery conjuring Middle Eastern travel and tourism on one screen whilst grisly proxy war footage plays on the next.
