SAVAGES Y SUEFO Brotherhood CD
After the release of their debut album Worldstyle (2012) the Budapest duo Savages Y Suefo are now returning with their second album Brotherhood; this time their message is more serious. The music summons blues elements but is also influenced by dub, funk and a little hip-hop while the lyrics are mainly about the social and personal problems of our time interpreted by talented guest vocalists from all over the world. The guest performance of KRSA puts the point on the letter "i" in "Brotherhood" and in the other reggae-inspired song "Pass It On". Being one of the dominant figures of the Hungarian ska movement he is an important guest on the album. As the main driving force behind Freak Power, Ashley Slater needs no introduction. He has worked with Dub Pistols, Dublex Inc, and Fort Knox Five, and his talents and professional performances turbocharged three songs. Denise M'Baye, the MC/singer of Mo'Horizons is featured in two down-tempo tracks. "Wings" is a laidback song about love while and "All My Life Is In This Bag" smuggles back a little bit of the mood of Worldstyle. Fedora is the best-known female MC/singer of the Hungarian bass music life. With "Come Away With Me" she proves that she's not only an bass music MC, but a great singer with deep emotions. Another guest from Hungary is the lead singer of the down-tempo funk band Mystical Plants. Bryant Goodman contributes to the album in two different tracks with his gravelly voice. "Bad Man's Ballad" is a bittersweet song about the average politician of our age while "Keep Going On" on the other hand is full of playfulness and delivers a short but positive message. Last but not least is the Ghanaian M3NSA on the board from Fokn Bois and RedRed. His lyrics in "It Works" are very motivating for everyone and spread the message of not giving up even if the world is seemingly against you. Savages Y Suefo's new album Brotherhood is a lot different from their previous one in many ways but it remained just as eclectic as its predecessor Worldstyle and still proves Savages Y Suefo's wide interest and openness in music that is needed today.

RADIGUE, ELIANE Jouet Electronique/Elemental I LP
Alga Marghen presents the new edition of Eliane Radigue's "Jouet Electronique" (1967) for feedback on magnetic tape and "Elemental I" (1968) for feedback of natural sounds on magnetic tape. This LP was first issued in 2010, and it's now presented for the first time with its own specific artwork and layout. Both works were recorded at Pierre Henry's Studio Apsome in Paris. Between 1967 and 1968, Radigue was Henry's assistant, mainly for the editing of L'Apocalypse de Jean (1969). Henry also put her in charge of organizing his sound archive; Radigue enjoyed doing this work, even if it took a long time. She decided to set the machines of the studio to do some work of her own. "Jouet Electronique" and "Elemental I" were born this way during her time as an assistant; working with feedback is something that Radigue learned through Henry. Do you remember Henry's Voyage (1969)? There's that fluid part which is made of feedback constructed with a microphone. Everything had to be set at a precise distance from the loudspeakers because that is the specific problem with feedback; one has to be at the right distance. Afterwards, these high tone recordings were slowed down in order to discover the deeper character of their color. This work with feedback was in the end quite limited and the composer preferred working with two reel tape machines to produce sounds. The first was set on the recording mode while the other was playing and it was the accidents happening in this phase that made the feedback richer. Fine-tuning could yield beautiful results: low pulsations, high-pitched sounds (sometimes both at the same time), or long sounds. All of these could be slowed down or accelerated, which gave beautiful source material. With "Jouet Electronique", Radigue had a lot of fun, hence the title. As far as "Elemental I" is concerned, it was the first attempt at something which was important to her based on the theme of the basic elements: water, fire, air and earth. Eliane had the chance to record in open air thanks to a small Stella Vox that Arman gave her in the beginning of the 1960s. Using it, Radigue built a minimal sound library, consisting of not more than ten reel tapes. This was the starting point; in 1968 she used these recordings for her work with two reel tape machines. New edition of 200, with liners by Radigue and portrait photos by Arman.

WILLIAMSON, JASON Happy Days Book
Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods returns with Happy Days, a new book of stories, on Philip Best's (Consumer Electronics) Amphetamine Sulphate. It's comedy night on the terminal ward. Williamson returns with thirteen all-new short stories from a grim and desperate world where everything is either "knackered and shit or new and shit." Sound familiar? Here you'll meet roaming loners, twats in fast cars, hard men telling porkies, strong women who know the score, various music maniacs and sex-addled, whizz-infested pub warts galore. But it's not all abject fucking misery, Williamson's characters come alive and somehow manage to conjure some happy days from the endless, panicked slog of caged poverty and bad choices. So settle down for some porn barks, crap nature, terrible housing and dogging hotspots. Life's a fuckin' sniff, innit? Williamson is also the author of Grammar Wanker (2015) and Slabs From Paradise (2017). 144 pages, paper.

GAZELLE TWIN Pastoral LP
LP version. The new album by Gazelle Twin exhumes England's rotten past and shines a torch over its ever-darkening present. Told through a troupe of multi-gender voices, in vernaculars old and new; from the shrill echo of folksong to tabloid-tinged jaunts, the artist presents the notion that "there is horror in every idyll, and danger lurking beyond the 'quaint'." Four years in the making, this is her first major release since her widely acclaimed LP Unflesh (2014) and Kingdom Come (2017). As its sole creator, Gazelle Twin 'The Composer, Musician and Producer' has crafted an album overflowing with a frenzy of traditional and contemporary musical tropes; from early music instrumentation -- the harpsichord and the humble recorder, fed through myriad electronics -- to the compelling, ritualistic application of found sample-looping. Beyond Elizabeth Bernholz's signature choral-infusions, here reverberating like a warped Sunday Service, there are even shades of '90s house and the once-thriving rural rave scene, albeit recalled as a watery, second-hand memory. Set against a verdant backdrop of hedgerows and steeples, Gazelle Twin constructs an eccentric and commanding visual embodiment of all-of-the-above -- a costume fit for a court Jester of the 21st Century. The colours of Neo-Nationalism. Coke cans, and danger. "It" (not "she") hints at folkloric traditions with a footy mascot twist. The "Ye Olde" and "The Everyman" of the English cliché. Brandishing a sneer and a hobby horse. A riddle and a recorder.

DIASTER Clustered Non Symmetry LP
Aperture has always been about discovering new artists and bringing them to the forefront and Italy is well-renowned for its electronic music, both past and present. So, from one Italian duo (T.E.S.O.) to another: introducing Diaster. Diaster aka Teo & G grew up in Treviso, listening to the most experimental music they could find in their small rural city near Venice. With Matteo inspired by metal and Musique Concrete and Gianluca a researcher of old electronic/instrumental music, they decided to experiment with their various experiences in house, techno and drum-n-bass, inserting strata of industrial music and noise into their material. After Enchantments (2017), their debut EP on DVNTT which deserves more recognition, and an accomplished follow-up on Subsist records; Final Beginner, Aperture Records brings you their latest contribution, Clustered Non Symmetry. On first acquaintance, this eight-track album appears on the minimal spectrum; monolithic and indivisible. Tension builds slowly and influences, mostly of a similar vintage, come through. Arrhythmic incursions of stark and contorted electronics conjure up a hesitant, stealthily-undermined delineative framework.

MAZE & LINDHOLM Where The Wolf Has Been Seen CD
Aurora Borealis presents the debut album from Maze & Lindholm, Where The Wolf Has Been Seen. Combining the talents of P.Maze, one half of noise/techno duo Orphan Swords, with fellow Brussels-based producer and musician Otto Lindholm, Where The Wolf Has Been Seen is a meditative and claustrophobic work for electronics and double bass. The four parts evolve and spread outwards, throbbing bass drones colliding with slowly bowed arcs of keening strings that make for a deeply immersive listening experience. Where The Wolf Has Been Seen explores the boundaries of the modern classical and electronic disciplines, with slowly shifting and expanding compositions that thrive on the tension between them. Mastered by James Plotkin and cut for vinyl at The Carvery, East London. Cover photography by Solal Israel. A Brussels-based producer evolving between drone music and modern classical, Otto Lindholm employs an array of loop pedals and electronic effects in partnership with his double bass to produce rich and voluptuous tones. Lindholm came to light in 2016 with his debut eponymous LP; his second LP Alter (GZH 078LP, 2017), was introduced on BBC6 by Mary Anne Hobbs as an "extraordinary new LP. Deeply meditative". In 2018, he featured on the Houndstooth compilation In Death's Dream Kingdom, and he's also set to work with Black Rain's Stuart Argabright. P.Maze is half of the duo Orphan Swords. Orphan Swords's music has been released on Aurora Borealis, Desire Records, Clan Destine and Instruments Of Discipline. The duo has collaborated with Ike Yard, Helm, SHXCXCHCXSH, Emptyset, and many more. In 2018, Orphan Swords were invited to score the Walter Van Beirendonck show at Fashion Week Paris. That meeting resulted into a techno-driven album in collaboration with the designer, with a painting of Wouter Steel. Next to the furious maximal output of Orphan Swords, P.Maze is exploring a quieter and much more minimal side. This collaboration with Lindholm represents his first official output under that moniker; a solo debut album is in the works as well.

MR. STATIK Metamorphose 2LP
Stathis Kalatzis, aka Mr. Statik, is a resident at Athens's multi-purpose cultural space Six D.O.G.S. He's not only been one of the scene's pivotal figures, but since he started to release his first solo releases in the mid-00s, the now Berlin-based Greek DJ has earned a reputation for being a trend-ignoring, unconventional producer. Mr. Statik enjoys thinking outside the box by crossing his diverse pop-cultural interests and pulling in expertise and perspective from beyond the usual functional formulas. After a decade of not staying in one comfort zone or sticking to one musical direction, he finds himself more comfortable in his producer shoes presenting his debut album Metamorphose. Housing a few film references in this for Mr. Statik typical nebulous fashion, the ten tracks not only carrying the narrative potential of an imaginary score, but primarily exploring a versatile array of influences, themes, and contradictions (which Mr. Statik as an illustrator also united on the album's artwork). Ranging from the sci-fi infused album opener "Insomnia", the first non-dancefloor piece he ever produced around 2011, over "?atastrophe", an homage to ancient Greek theater, to collaborate with others such as Beatrice Ballabile, Jan Niklas Jansen (Locas In Love), and Claude Speeed, who contributed synth work on "Soulfur". Metamorphose succeeds in constantly changing its tones, while maintaining an emotional frame, in which Mr. Statik's melancholic, introvert, at times hopeful and euphoric, bottom end inclined electronic music can elaborate. Mr. Statik on his debut album: "I have always tried to approach producing as storytelling exercises. This allowed me to experiment finding myself in uncharted territories, more specifically in music that doesn't necessarily fit to a dance floor -- unless it's a very adventurous one. Metamorphose is loyal to that mindset. I usually draw inspiration from cinema and comic books and have always been fascinated with sci-fi, south Asian culture, surrealism, and the dreamworld. Initially the album was supposed to be a collage of the various influences that had shaped my life, but ended up being something very different. During the conceptualization and recording process a lot of things around us have changed, primarily for the worse. I became more and more sensitive and susceptible to pessimism and trendy visions of 'dystopian futurism', so that the LP emerged being an exercise in positivity." Also features Dave Aju and Nastya.

UONE Balance Presents Uone 2CD
One of the most hotly-tipped leaders of the new school, Uone delivers a stunning two-part mix for the Balance Series that was two-and-a-half years in the making, and is composed entirely of his own material. All 21 tracks come from Uone's production studio, whether it be an original, remix, or collaboration, going above and beyond the usual mix CD remit to create something truly special. The Balance compilation series provided an important formative touchstone in his musical education, with his inclusion in the cannon making for a pleasing full circle. His twin mixes feature reworks of progressive house and trance classics (PQM, Jam & Spoon) and references to his home country's thriving scene from his nascent years via his re-work of the highly-revered, once-mighty electronic band, Infusion. Collaboration is a defining factor here with the majority of the tracks created in partnership with other esteemed producers. Uone has mastermind collaborations with the likes of Jay Haze (aka Fuckpony), Adam Freeland, Mihai Popoviciu, Mojo Filter, Jamie Stevens, Jonas Saalbach and Flow & Zeo along the way, making for an acutely diverse melting pot of ideas. The first disc slowly builds from mystical vocal excursions using organic instrumentation, which eases us in before the metallic bass tones of "Animal Kingdom" alongside DJ Schwa raises the intensity. The rhythms switch from techno to house as the pumping groove of his and Andreas Henneberg's remix of Infusion's "Spike A Drink" sends the mix into the next gear. An excellent remix of Schlepp Geist's "Those Days" by Flow & Zeo brings us to an ethereal crescendo. The second disc aims directly at the dance floor, opening with the brooding power of Uone & Danny Bonnici's remix of Luke Chable's classic "The Shepherd." Majestic vocal turns from Philosophia and Sleeping Genie then breeze in to breathe in evolving emotion to the mix. Bold strings continue to cut through on "Good Morning Sunshine" with Thankyou City, before the mix drives us towards the epic chants of Uone & Jamie Stevens' rework of Jam & Spoon's "Odyssey to Anyoona," one of the jewels in the crown of this mix. A wonderful remix of Monolink's Sirens completes the journey, with its mesmerizing indie-dance energy a fitting closer.

HARPER, TEX Dig Me Little Mama 10"
"10inch LP in gatefold sleeve, 12 tracks. Total playing time 26:35 minutes. 'The 'Cat Music' within this album is the nucleus of rockabilly and features: Tex Harper aka Rudy Preston and Harry Head with Tommy Scott and his Ramblers. Musically it is an amazing fusion of Hillbilly, Western Swing, a touch of Rhythm 'n' Blues bonded together with strong influences from Bill Haley. Our musical journey commences in 1954 and the musical world for songs with a rock beat was in its infancy, and Elvis Presley was still a regional artist and Bill Haley in prominence ruled supreme! The recordings on this album are an amalgamation of country and the big beat of rock 'n' roll, and this new hybrid of music would become known as 'Cat Music'. The main point is to clear up the distinction of the artists featured on this 12 track album. Musically the band was under the direction of Tommy Scott and His Ramblers, and Freddie Jean Harper to give him his full name was employed as the vocalist. Harper recorded under several alter-egos: Tex Harper, Rudy Preston and Harry Head and he is the main featured singer on ten of the songs and is the rhythm guitarist, pianist, or drummer on eight tracks. The two side closing bonus songs feature vocals by Sam 'Bo Bo' Baxter and Tommy Scott. Harper musically is something exceptional and each and every performance has 'hit' written all over them! Perhaps due to him being one of the ground breaking artists with the new 'Cat Music', being signed to the notorious Four Star label or the use of other performing names, something prevented his musical accreditation. This 10 inch album although hillbilly rooted transcends hillbilly music, engulfs rockabilly and moves into the rock 'n' roll genre, and as Rudy Preston you hear the Presley influence albeit from the next decade.' --Mark Armstrong Bühl"

BACAO RHYTHM & STEEL BAND 55 (Single Vinyl Version) LP
"Shrouded in mystery, hailing from Hamburg, Germany, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band (BRSB) releases their long awaited debut 55 on Brooklyn's own Big Crown Records. Long time multi-instrumentalist and band leader Bjorn Wagner spent a few months in Trinidad & Tobago where he became fascinated with Steel Drums. His initial intrigue with local steel pan music culture led him to learning the instrument both through help of local players and on his own. After he became proficient on the pans Bjorn had his own instrument built from a used oil barrel by legendary pan man Louis C. Smith. Upon returning home to Germany, Bjorn set out to blend the Tropical Steel into his already sharply honed Funk, Soul, and Hip Hop sensibilities. The outcome is an updated take on a classic format, a truly unique sound. Their first two recordings were covers of The Meters 'Look A-Py-Py' and 'Ease Back' which they self-released on a 45. Looking back on these two sides you can tell they were just getting their chops up for what was to come next. This is evidenced by how all hell broke loose when they went on to cover 50 Cent's hit 'PIMP' taking the DJ and vinyl collecting communities by storm. Many people thought the recording was the original sample and probably still do to this day when it is played. The original Mocambo pressing sold out quickly and is now a collector's item fetching heavy prices when it changes hands. It was this tune that made the introduction between Bjorn and Danny Akalepse of Big Crown. They immediately hit it off and starting making plans to do a full-length project with the band. Keeping in the tradition of Steel Drum records, 55 is a journey through re-interpolations and covers with an updated approach, pushing Steel Pan music to uncharted territory. Flawlessly bringing previously untouched genres into the steel pan cannon ranging from Underground Hip Hop tunes to staple Funk tracks and some of all that falls in between. BRSB's 55 is reinvigorating tunes both well-known and helping to shed some light on tunes still largely undiscovered. However, some of the strongest tunes on the album are original compositions, from spaced out Disco vibes on 'Beetham Highway Ride' and 'Port Of Spain Hustle' to the ugly face inspiring drums of 'Laventille Road March'. Recorded to analog 8 track tape at The Mocambo Studios in Hamburg, 55 is a gritty, punchy journey in sound drawing on music from around the world, using production aesthetics from across both eras and genres, all coming together seamlessly. If the 45s that have already come out on Mocambo, Plane Jane, and Truth & Soul are an indication, this full length is going to be a staple to both casual listeners and Disc Jockeys alike."

EL MICHELS AFFAIR (FEAT. LEE FIELDS) Never Be Another You (Reggae Version) 7"
"For years, Lee Fields has been asking for and patiently waiting on a reggae rhythm to sing over. To bring this dream to fruition, EMA teamed up with frequent collaborator and reggae enthusiast, Nick Movshon, and busted out this version of the Lee Fields & The Expressions' instant classic, 'Never be Another You'. The A side is the vocal version of the tune; EMA cut a killer interpolation of the original and had Lee lay down the vocals like only he can. The result is right on time for summer, a feel good side that can hold court right next to the classics. The B side finds Michels manning the boards for a proper version of the tune. Echoes, drop outs, and reverb flourishes all dancing through the mix in proper reggae style."

BACAO RHYTHM & STEEL BAND 1 Thing/Hoola Hoop 7"
"Following up on the massive success of their sophomore full length The Serpent's Mouth, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band is back with another dance floor classic. Side A is their already infamous cover of Amerie's smash hit '1 Thing'. Done up in what is now their signature fashion, they take on the break originally lifted from The Meters, and believe it or not... step it up a notch. Steel pans play her infectious vocal melody lines over the raucous and crushing drum track. This will have the dance floor turning to the booth in amazement and wonder as soon as the pans come in. An absolute essential for DJs across the globe. The B Side, 'Hoola Hoop' is a BRSB original tune, the stuff that B Boys dream about... Setting it off with a killer breakbeat intro that drops into pan hits and flute flourishes, never losing the groove and full of energy. They trade off leads from flute to steel pans while running through turnarounds and drum fills building more energy the whole time like a snowball rolling down a mountain headed right for the speakers."

79.5 Terrorize My Heart (Disco Dub)/Terrorize My Heart (Bounce Remix) 7"
"Following up on their debut full length release, 79.5 drops a new and revamped version of their dance floor classic 'Terrorize My Heart (Disco Dub)'. A tune that leaves no room for gray and finds the ladies of 79.5 walking the line between vulnerability and forthrightness. Setting out with admonishments of love and infatuation that are quickly checked by the bluntness of women who've lived in the Big Apple for years, 'is it her or is it me, that's how it's gotta be'. Remixed and remastered with a new intro for the DJs, producer Leon Michels and engineer Jens Jungkurth managed to take an already smash of a tune to a higher level. For the B side we enlisted one of underground hip hop's brightest stars, Tall Black Guy. His 'Bounce Remix' of 'Terrorize My Heart' is just that. The Detroit producer takes the tune to a different level and turns it into a monster of a head-nodder. Loose drums and chord stabs provide backing track while vocal samples through out keep the track super hype. An easy dancefloor killer for the Hip Hop / R&B jocks."

HOLY HIVE This Is My Story/Blue Light 7"
"Big Crown Records is proud to present the debut single from the newest band on the roster, Holy Hive. Comprised of Paul Spring, Homer Steinweiss, and Joe Harrison, Holy Hive obscures genre lines and has a style and energy uniquely their own. Side A, 'This Is My Story', is a cover of the Invincibles' cult classic from 1968. Holy Hive takes the tune into modern times while keeping just enough of the original. The horns and vibraphone rip into the speakers from the first note and Paul Spring's ethereal and honeyed vocals sit atop Homer's infamous drumming like an oxpecker on a black rhino's back. The B Side, 'Blue Light' is a perfect representation of the sound that is wholly unique to Holy Hive. With a less is more ethos, they craft an intimate space that is equal parts Jessica Pratt, The Persuaders, and Julian Bream."

RZEWSKI, FREDERIC Coming Together / Attica / Les Moutons De Panurge LP
Black Sweat presents a reissue of Frederic Rzewski's Coming Together / Attica / Les Moutons De Panurge, originally issued in 1974. This milestone of avant-garde music, first published by Max Schubel's historic Opus One label, was a very significant political statement. With "Coming Together" and "Attica", Rzewski celebrates in music the famous revolt in the American prison in 1971. The texts of Sam Melville and Richard X. Clark make the invocations of the prisoners pulsating and alive. Full of pathos, these fragments of life oscillate between a confessional tone and a hymn to freedom, in a touching emblem of compassion. The fixity of the sound images is incisive, unnerving and melancholic, embroidering a solid minimalist repetition. The different combination of the verses produces a psychosis or obsession towards a cathartic experience, at the same time emotional, physical and mental. Together with great guests such as Alvin Curran, Jon Gibson, Garrett List, Steve Ben Israel and Karl Berger, Rzewski seems to merge his radical vocation with the most meditative and suffered plots of the spiritual jazz; sealing the package with "Les Moutons Des Panurge," an amazing suite for percussion, a timeless masterpiece of polyrhythmic expertise.

LIST, GARRETT Your Own Self LP
Black Sweat presents a reissue of Garrett List's Your Own Self, originally issued in 1972. Produced on Max Schubel's Opus One label, it was a remarkable creative effort, conceived like a celebration of a higher self-consciousness. The context is avant-garde minimalism, but the music is enriched by a deep spiritualism; it echoes the most meditative jazz of the age, taking also advantage from the mystic lesson of La Monte Young. Everything is solved in a free, moderate and brilliant language, pure and elegant. It's quintessential, in these rare moments of beauty, the instrumentation of the voices and the relative interpretation of the text. The sibilant female chant is lost in an intimate and ethereal recitation, wrapped by the drones of the horns and the dripping notes of the piano and vibraphone. It's the ideal atmosphere for an impalpable ecstatic way, the echo of a secret dialog with the inner cosmos. On this recording, List seems to condense perfectly all his emotional and transcendental sound universe, making Your Own Self not only a seminal work, but also a radiant message of total harmony.

SUNDSTROM, ISAK Five Dramas Of Swollen Emotions LP
The histrionic Swedish artist Isak Sundström (Pascal and Skriet) embraces the fascinating sound world of the "spoken word", infusing new expressive perspectives to this genre with original sensitivity. On Five Dramas Of Swollen Emotions, Sundström offers five vocal dramas based on the subtitles of some films by Douglas Sirk, texts that describe the sound effects, and events that occur outside the screen. But the result is rather that of a new dissolved narrative, of another space that explores the boundaries of emotional imagination. In this way, the poetic interest seems to fall on the totality of human existence, in an open dialectic between earthly and supernatural, profane and religious, nature and divinity, heaven and hell, light and darkness. The atmospheric frame is supported by an electronic carpet, drops of piano fall soft and slow, while the modulations of the voice are enriched and intensified by a colorful orchestra of percussion and wind instruments. The narrator's voice has something of the typical "black" vocal emphasis of American spiritual jazz, but which alternate with moments of pathos and ecstatic transcendence typically Nordic and European.

BLANCMANGE Wanderlust CD
Blancmange's Wanderlust is ten songs composed by Neil Arthur and arranged, co-produced and mixed with Benge (Wrangler/Creep Show) at the latter's Memetune Studios. This is the pair's third album together. Wanderlust is focused on similar themes but there's a new energy to the approach - wistfulness turning to anger; dislocation morphing into a powerful desire to be somewhere else, and always a sense of someone fighting for forward motion, dreams, family and the joys of life while seeing, as Arthur puts it, "the pretense of a normal world being erased." This spirit is also in the music, which is vital, percussive, and full of analog machine-noise and chunky bass lines.

BLANK FORMS Blank Forms, Vol. 3: Henning Christiansen: Freedom is Around the Corner Book
The third issue of Blank Forms's journal is released in conjunction with Freedom Is Around The Corner, a retrospective exhibition and performance series devoted to the work of Danish composer and artist Henning Christiansen (1932-2008). Perhaps best known for his collaborations with artists such as Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, and Dick Higgins, Christiansen, working primarily on the remote Danish island of Møn, moved beyond his Fluxus roots to create a vast, ineffable body of work that spanned music, performance, film, and visual art over the course of a fifty-year career. Christiansen's work has, however, remained under the radar; only a few of his recordings were available until recently, and his prolific compositional and visual outputs have rarely been performed or exhibited in the United States. Freedom Is Around The Corner seeks to present Christiansen's life and work in a holistic manner that befits his dynamic practice, collecting a combination of newly discovered, never-before published, and newly translated materials. In this case, many of the materials were found in the Henning Christiansen Archive. The issue begins with a newly translated interview with Christiansen, conducted circa 2006 by writer Thomas Groetz. Two others were conducted by Francesco Conz and Michael Glasmeier in the 1990s; these three interviews offer a well-rounded picture of the late-career Christiansen through his own, good-humored lens. The fourth interview, a more experimental text conducted by Helmer Nørgaard, was originally published in the magazine DMT, in an issue devoted to Christiansen. Here, it's presented as a translated facsimile, featuring texts on Christiansen by his prominent Danish collaborators, the writer Lars Morell and the artists Per Kirkeby and Bjørn Nørgaard. We hear from other Christiansen collaborators through correspondence, including letters from Emily Harvey and Higgins, and through interviews, including newly conducted interviews with his wife and collaborator, Ursula Reuter Christiansen. Bjorn Nørgaard has also spoken with Christiansen's son Thorbjørn Reuter Christiansen; and later musical collaborators Werner Durand and Ute Wassermann. This issue also features younger artists who have grappled with Christiansen's legacy. Represented through interviews (Lucy Railton), original artworks (Graham Lambkin, Áine O'Dwyer, Stíne Janvin), and essays (Mark Harwood, Anton Lukoszevieze), these artists demonstrate the lasting and diverse impact of Christiansen's work on today's musical landscape. Taken together, the texts in this journal provide an in-depth look, at a towering but overlooked figure in the postwar musical as well as artistic avant-garde. Paper, 448 pages, 6 x 8 inches. Edition of 1000.

BRAME & HAMO Celebrity Impersonator EP 12"
Sligo-born Berlin-based duo Brame & Hamo, aka Tiarnan McMorrow and Conor Hamilton, Celebrity Impersonator EP via their own imprint, Brame & Hamo. The title reflects the duo's love of celebrity impersonators whilst growing up. On "Midnight Express", the rolling melodics nod to the early sounds of prog-house and Italo, acting as a transition to their signature trance-via-techno. On the B-Side, a moody four-four that edges into the darker realms with their love of breakbeat shimmering through, resulting in a club-ready anthem. Melting down into a rolling trance groove with a late-night heady feel, "Request Rhythm" closes the EP.

QLUSTER Elemente CD
Elemente -- album number seven from the third incarnation of the legendary krautronic project Kluster/Cluster springs a surprise with a minor sensation: sequencer lines. Using an array of exclusively analogue instruments, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Onnen Bock, and Armin Metz have recorded eight tracks which, at one and the same time, are intrinsically hypnotic and sublimely beautiful. In principle, Elemente was created in much the same fashion as earlier Qluster albums: the three musicians met up in Schönberg, a remote hamlet in northern Mecklenburg. The eight pieces were distilled from the original recordings of their lengthy improvised sessions, with additional elements added to only three of the tracks in the production process: a synthesizer melody for "Zeno", a prepared piano for "Xymelan" and a computer beat for "Tatum". First special feature on the new album: the "tools of the trade". In their choice of equipment, Qluster reach back to their own history as Cluster, more than forty years ago, when legendary albums like 1974's Zuckerzeit (LR 333LP), 1976's Sowiesoso (BB 039CD/LP), and 1981's Curiosum (BB 038CD/LP) were made. Elemente has been crafted exclusively with analog instruments: a range of analog synthesizers, rhythm machines, a Farfisa organ, a Fender Rhodes piano, and various effects devices plus -- second special feature and making its debut in the band's narrative -- a 1970s sequencer playing an endless loop of manually recorded melodies, fed through effects and equalizers to achieve that typically hypnotic sequencer character. Listen out for them on "Perpetuum", "Xymelan", "Tatum" and "Lindow". By way of contrast, "Weite" and "Infinitum" unfold in vast echo chambers, free of metrics. Between these two very different musical forms lie "Zeno" and "Symbia". The former pulsates with long deep breaths beneath delicate sequences of notes emanating from the ARP 2600, the latter, "Symbia", layers a songlike Rhodes piano melody over an echoing, rhythmic Farfisa organ chord. After four electronic productions and two piano albums, Qluster now invite you to visit eight new and beguilingly beautiful worlds of sound on Elemente.

ALU Die Vertreibung Der Zeit (1980-1986) CD
ALU's inception as descendants of the psychedelic group Sand, founded by Ludwig Papenberg and Johannes Vester, comes in 1980. Their first single "Bitte Warten Sie!" appears on their own label Der Letzte Schrei! in 1981. Even on these early recordings, the project's sonic orientation is discernible: sequencer-driven, simplistic rhythmic structures layered over fragments of free text, a common thread tracing ALU's musical contours through various successive metamorphoses. Although the band emerged from Berlin's cassette underground, their brittle sound is closer to the likes of Nocturnal Emissions or Cabaret Voltaire in England than to their German counterparts. The first realignment came in 1981 when vocalist Nadja Molt joined the group. Her voice cuts deep furrows into the tracks, at times lurking ominously in the background, elsewhere virtually exploding out of certain tracks. Logged by the band as ALU II, this phase fails to produce any studio recordings, but two live LPs Störfaktor I - Alus Riskantes Experiment 31.7.81 im Risiko (1981) and Licht (1982) survive as audible witnesses. Ludwig Papenberg left before 1982 reached its conclusion; Vester and Molt continued as a duo, now called ALU III, resolutely pursuing the principles of concentrated improvisation and maximum creative autonomy. On the live cassette, Geistige Erneuerung (1983), the band outlined their philosophy, "We aim to store as many sounds, noise and rhythmic frameworks as possible in our synthesizers and drum machines as we allow them to unfold naturally when we play live. Words and vocals are snapshots, spontaneous phenomena." Two other cassettes were released the same year, Ungesunde Traumbilder and Attrition/Alu. These proved to be the final studio recordings before ALU exited the scene with a concert at Fabrik in Hamburg, entitled Performance und kein Ende in 1986. The ALU oeuvre thus covers seven years of divergent creativity, yet the group's inner compass never wavers. ALU represent understated understatement, their music touching on genres such as electro, techno or IDM which would only materialize years later. Repetitive sequences sound like taut loops, their frequencies tuned to allow the original sample to shine through in skeletal fashion. Die Vertreibung der Zeit is more than a mere historical document; in order to understand the bigger picture of contemporary club culture, this collection is an essential piece of the puzzle.

VA Sowas Von Egal: German Synth Wave Underground 1980-1985 CD
"Sowas Von Egal, is the result of a collaboration between Bureau B and the Hamburg party series Damaged Goods. Record companies and DJs are aligned through a love and passion for seeking out rare music which simply needs to be heard. For the three of us as DJs, we created Damaged Goods as a party where we could play music beyond the electro clichés. Our focus would be seldom-heard post-punk and synth-wave from, or in the style of, the 1980s. We'd slip in these unknown or long-forgotten treasures between more familiar hits from the genre to inspire and excite our guests. Eighties culture is very much a reference point today in music, art and fashion, so why not play the originals, especially as there is still so much to be discovered from that period? Many of the old records we'd play in the club had only been pressed in small quantities, often sold exclusively at the respective bands' gigs. More than 30 years later, it is almost impossible to get hold of these tracks, unless you pay over the odds on certain websites or track them down as inferior MP3s on this or that blog. This is why it was so important to us that our collaboration with Bureau B would be dedicated to selecting tracks for Sowas Von Egalwhich are not readily available on vinyl and have not been rereleased (or the reissues themselves are genuine rarities). The groundwork for this project was interesting in itself: sorting through and listening to songs, making lists, setting priorities, then getting in touch with labels and trying to find the musicians of yesteryear. This wasn't always so easy: some had disappeared from view, others had died. When we did find who we were looking for, the reaction was generally positive, although some were surprised that anybody was interested in their music today. We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to Tom Morgenstern, who worked wonders with a jumble of disparate source material to achieve sonic consistency. Fans of our parties will recognize more than a few of the tracks on Sowas von egal; we are proud to have put together this collection." --Volker Kindt and Marco Flöß, June 2018. CAMERA Emotional Detox LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. "Started as the so-called 'Krautrock Guerrilla' in 2012, six years later the Berlin combo Camera are releasing their fourth full-length album, Emotional Detox. Customarily associated with the likes of NEU! and La Düsseldorf it is time to allow Camera to break free of the krautrock tradition. For fans of nominative determinism, there can be few more apposite appelations than Michael Drummer. He is the catalyst, linking everything together as he crosses the soundscape of everything captured on Camera. The band's moniker Camera, meanwhile, is an altogether more capricious calling card. Emotional Detox is the fourth full-length album by Camera, now a quintet, following two albums as a trio and one as a duo. The line-up here comprises Steffen Kahles, Drummer, Michel Collet, Andreas Miranda and Timm Brockmann, all based in Berlin. Drummer is the only constant through all four phases. Brockmann, who left the group in 2014, returns to the fold. He and Franz Bargmann, who left Camera the year before him, released the duo album Licht (BB 269 CD/LP), a celebration of keys, guitars and effects which, at times, emulated the ferocious potential of Camera. By the time Kahles joined the band, Brockmann had already departed, so the new ensemble adds another twist in bringing together two keyboard players from different Camera phases for the first time. The Brockmann-Drummer reunion, meanwhile, completes a circle tracing back to early Camera experiences shared in 2010/11, playing on the streets of Berlin. Paradoxically, the new Camera line-up sharpens the group's focus. With Drummer not so much joining the dots as hammering them home with a nail gun, the stronger framework allows even greater freedom for the musicians to express and align their disparate creative interests. The soundscape here assumes the quality of a cinematic loop, like watching the same film over and over, yet discovering new things each time it plays. The motorik origins of the band on their debut Radiate! (BB 116 CD/LP, 2012) eventually gave way to the playfulness on Phantom of Liberty (BB 235CD/LP, 2016). A spirit of experimentation still abounds on the new LP, but there's also evidence that the group have taken a step towards something more pop. The reference points are still there, but Emotional Detox is not dependent on them, encouraging us to disregard these multiple distractions." --Harry Calvino

Eurabia Vol. 1 sees Cairo Liberation Front collaborating with Iraqi/Dutch female vocalist Meis (aka Bagdaddy), Syrian keyboard virtuoso Rizan Said, and others. The lead "Tilly" track gallops along like a rabid horse with Bagdaddy in the saddle, urging it on. It is, in essence, the embodiment on record of their scintillating live set, which ripped the roof off the Dour festival this summer. But our favorite track on the EP is the anthemic, swaggering "Persepolis", featuring Jabo, which is guaranteed to get any dance floor churning. CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN, THE The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown LP/3CD
"Back in summer 1968, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown were on top of the world. Famously promoted by performances with Arthur Brown wearing a burning helmet, 'Fire!' was a massive worldwide hit, topping the charts in the UK and Canada and eventually reaching the Top 10 in America (No. 2), France, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands and Ireland. The band's second single on Track Records, co-produced by The Who's Pete Townshend, it bridged the gap between London's flourishing, colorful psychedelic underground and the mainstream pop scene. The resulting album, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, was a theatrical, ambitious concept album based around the elements (fire being just one of four, of course). Such was the huge impact of 'Fire' that the album sold in huge quantities, peaking at No. 2 in the UK and No. 7 in America. The Beatles were the only other British band to enjoy such unprecedented sales with such ambitious, psychedelic lps. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this landmark record, Cherry Red are delighted to present this deluxe edition box set of The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown. Alongside the stereo album and numerous bonus tracks, the rare Mono mix appears on CD for the first time, as well as three additional, previously unissued BBC sessions and four other radio recordings, plus a handful of pre-Track recordings by Arthur Brown before he formed Crazy World... Lavishly packaged within a 12' x 12' box set, and complete with a stereo vinyl replica of the original LP and a poster, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown is augmented by a 12,000-word sleeve-note from Mojo magazine's Mark Paytress (including fresh quotes from Arthur and others), alongside a wealth of illustrations and three previously unissued photos from the original front cover session."

EXTRAWELT Unknown CD
Extrawelt are Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe. Both have been around for about 40 years, and making music together for half that time. They enjoy normal things and are ashamed of their carbon footprints due to the large number of flights they take to bring them to their gigs. Unknown is the tenth studio album from the producer team, and the fourth under the name Extrawelt; it's largely devoted to another side of their creations. Extrawelt releases always have been somehow different yet, despite becoming instantly absorbed into the familiar Extrawelt atmosphere when listening, one can't help but notice something's very different. Feet are bouncing, the mind is traveling; one imagines what it would be like to listen to Unknown with closed eyes in the midst of a throbbing concert instead of through laptop speakers. Listening to Extrawelt on crappy speakers is anyway never a good idea; leave the confines of a lo-fi laptop world and get in the car. Crank up the stereo, and cruise around aimlessly, lost in an appreciation of the music. One has the urge to speed up, even if one is usually a very sensible driver, the bass and beats blowing up in one's face. This is something undeniably Extrawelt, yet inherently different to what we've come to expect from the Hamburg pair. Something about this twelve-track journey fits together so superbly it's hard not to be overcome with at least a few shivers up the spine. With profound bass lines and cutting drums, one keeps coming back to these sounds, again and again. Whether this is exotic or native doesn't matter; all that matters is it's great, and it isn't techno! Somehow, Extrawelt have accomplished staying true to themselves despite deploying not even one four-to-the floor-bass drum. Admittedly, one can find a couple of similar tracks on a few of their previous releases, but here is got a whole album full of it. What genre of music is this actually? Neo-Electro? Alternative Electronica? Emo-EDM?? These guys don't like to be put into boxes; it's simply Extrawelt. The tracks on Unknown began simmering more than ten years ago without any goal or idea regarding if they'd end up releasing them. This explains how Unknown appeared so quickly after their most recent album, Fear Of An Extra Planet(COR 041 CD/LP, 2017).

SUZUKI & DAVID TOOP, AKIO Breath Taking CD
"Breath-Taking is the result of one of Akio Suzuki's rare visits to England. Suzuki's music proceeds from meditation and transforms quotidian objects (a stone flute, small stones, a 'silent toy') into fragile means of communication. David Toop makes a very compatible sound-mate. Here he uses an assortment of flutes and whistles, along with a whistling pot and 'organic materials' (a vague enough description to allow the listener to imagine at will). Upon first listen, one may think of two serious men making childlike music, but the level of contemplation found in this single, 37-minute piece dispels this first impression. The performance is not particularly striking, even from the point of view of such a quiet form of improvisation, but it is obvious that the music doesn't intend to strike or compel. It is born out of such simplicity that it simply exists; it is there, discreetly inhabiting one's listening space, and its sole presence is a marvel. One finds an interesting level of interaction between the artists and inventive, creative sound-making at play."--François Couture, All Music Guide.Personnel: Akio Suzuki - kikkukikiriki, stone flute, small stones, pan pipe, ireba, silent toy; David Toop - flutes, bone whistle, dog whistles, stones, whistling pot, organic materials, feedback device. HOYOUX, JEAN III Hymne LP
Reissue, originally released in 1985. Two years after his debut double-LP Planètes (1981), Jean Hoyoux recorded three new compositions in the home build studio, Madame Bois. In his later published book NOOS, la naissance à l'esprit, Hoyoux described the recording of III Hymne as follows: "'Power of being' my fingers are wreathed with violets and blues. Sounds emerge from them, called by something unknown to me. Joyful forces embrace me. I am both listener and musician. The rising melodies come forth from some unknown universe, vibrating to some unknown world. E Minor, C Minor, G Minor: harmonies of the awareness inside. The third hymn." The original record was issued on CRETS, or Centre du Recherche et d'Etudes, in 1985 and now, 33 years later, re-released for the first time on Cortizona. On III Hymne, Hoyoux further explores the electronic instruments he also used on Planètes which results in a marvelous album that in some way connects the dots between ambient, library, cosmic, and spiritual music.

Dark and powerful, this is one of the best of Morricone's crime thriller scores of the period, which should appeal to fans of celebrated scores like Città Violenta (RED 223C-LP, 2015) and Revolver (RED 220-CLP, 2015). Heat is a surprise new double album from Shinichi Atobe for Demdike Stare. It follows on from 2017's From The Heart, It's A Start, A Work Of Art (DDS 023LP) and continues a run of highly enigmatic, acclaimed and completely unparalleled productions that follow their own timeless logic. There's no sonic fiction involved; this material really does just turn up on a CD sent by air mail from Japan to Manchester, sparse info, no messing, pure gold. What's that cover art about? It's probaby something to do with the balmy, slightly fucked, sun-stroked material within. Alex Metric & Ten Ven's Transmission 1 EP is their first release on Diynamic. Opening track "The Q", much like the closing track "Plates", are reminiscent of old UK garage raves with a hint of acid. Minuscule shifts in the pitch give that certain cassette-nostalgia, transporting the listener back to the early '90s. The centerpiece titled "Nebula" is a driving melodic deep house tune with a hefty break that brings things to a halt right at its center, only to return with the catchy riff that is its main feature.

PORT, ADAM Planet 9 12"
Adam Port is releasing his first EP on Diynamic titled Planet 9. The title track "Planet 9" has actually already been recorded in the old Keinemusik studio back when it was still located inside Stadtbad Wedding. The guitar and bass are the works of Lukas Kay, one of Port's oldest friends from back in his punk/hardcore days. The rediscovery happened only by chance, when Solomun asked Port for unreleased material for his in-game-mix of Grand Theft Auto V Online: out of the tracks the Berlin-based DJ and producer sent, it was "Planet 9" that Solomun chose.

COP KILLERS, THE The Cop Killers LP
Ecstatic presents a reissue of The Cop Killers' self-titled album, originally issued in 1982. A genuine holy grail of Italian post-industrial music, The Cop Killers' sole, eponymous tape is remastered and issued on vinyl for the first time via Alessio Natalizia's Ecstatic label. Fetching triple figures on the second hand market (there's a copy on Discogs presently for £300) this is an indispensable slice of '80s Europe's underground experimental rhizome. An important release for Ecstatic and one very close to their heart, The Cop Killers was originally released on the legendary Trax label and features the industrial power trio of Trax co-founder Vittore Baroni and label regular Daniele Ciullini assisted by UK's Mark A. Phillips (Five Times of Dust) in supposing a sci-fi narrative set in a not-so-distant future society. While clearly drawing influence and literary license from classic sci-fi by Orwell, Ray Bradbury, and William Burroughs, the trio also take cues from the not-so-distant history of Italian fascism to offer a subtly coded and subversive warning against right-wing ideologies. In the process The Cop Killers distinguished themselves by preferring to plants seeds of hope amid the rubble of their peers nihilistic/apocalyptic visions, implicitly turning the album into a sort of "pacifist parable". The political aspect wouldn't be half as crucial without the music, though. A coarse blend of Italian-accented English vox with backing tracks ranging from jaunty synth figures to cloven drum machine malfunctions and noisier wig-outs, it was mixed on a dual cassette deck and mixer from numerous tapes in just over 90 minutes, and successfully carries the narrative and its message to the point it's become such a sought-after classic - not just for its obscurity, but also its charged energy, a condensation of candescent anger focused into a pointedly oblique yet smartly allegorical condemnation of fascism. Baroni: "As a music journalist and fan of radical and avant-garde audio researches, at the start of the '80s I was becoming increasingly bored by the mannerism of so many industrial and noise bands, and also annoyed by their gratuitous and stereotyped use of images of death, Nazism, war, with titles and texts soaked in right-wing ideologies. I wanted to produce an antibody to this depressive trend, with seeds of hope well concealed under a nihilistic-apocalyptic "industrial" camouflage." Mastered by Matt Colton.

LEIGH, HEATHER Throne CD
On Throne, Heather Leigh takes her place as queen of pedal steel with a suite of heart-rending ballads cauterized with burning riffs. After the rawness of its precursor I Abused Animal (SOMA 023LP, 2015), Throne is a record of late night Americana and heavy femininity; intimate love songs smoked in sensuality. The songs on Throne are woozy, gorgeous and uncomfortable, smothered in thick layers of bass but lifted by multi-tracked vocals. These are rich song forms that stand in contrast to the stripped down steel in her duo with Peter Brotzmann. "Prelude To Goddess" sashays in wearing leopard-print jeans under the twinkling fluorescent illuminations of the British seaside, like Brighton Rock with extra bass. It is followed in by "Lena" -arguably Leigh's "Jolene" - a perverse love song soaked in a subversive sexuality, weighed down with a heavy pulse. "Soft Seasons" is anchored with sunken beats shrouded in wailing, growling steel and an earwormy melody. "Gold Teeth", the longest track on the record, crests and breaks in waves; ecstatic peaks balanced and echoed by melancholic troughs. It soars on an updraft, and from cosmic heights dives seaward into a gnarly and riotous pedal steel breakdown, before catching the breeze again. "Days Without You" and "Scorpio & Androzani" are shorter, intimate songs; in the latter the synths seethe and the steel bows and bends as Leigh's voice falters above a Greek chorus of shadows and reflections. But this isn't autobiography, and Throne departs on "Days Without You", a confrontationally unfinished romantic song, anxious with half-thoughts and missed connections. It glides into the night on stilettos leaving unanswered questions, in a fugue of psychic disturbance and lovesick sensuality. Leigh's artwork (which she photographed and designed) is a visual mirror of the songs on Throne. It is an album of cosmic echoes, abstractions and introspection, of characters and stories that make up Leigh's first best pop record, its melodies and hooks set alight with the fiery core of her unique and distinctive pedal steel. Additional instrumentation by John Hannon (violin, synthesizer) and David Keenan (electric bass). Recorded and engineered by John Hannon, Rayleigh, Essex, March 2018. Photographs and design: Heather Leigh.

CAUSA SUI Free Ride 2LP
Double LP version. Causa Sui's Free Ride is finally back in print after being sold out for more than a decade! The original single-LP version, released in 2007 on Elektrohasch, has been selling for ridiculous prices on Discogs and eBay. Even the CDs are sought-after collectors' items, almost impossible to find, until now. Imagine a tidal wave sweeping up from the 1960s through the 1970s, then cresting in the 1990s before finally crashing on the shore of the present; that's what Free Ride sounds like. This is the "heavy psych" album of the Causa Sui catalog, one out of only two albums they recorded with a lead singer, and the most direct-sounding collection of tracks the band has done to date. The sonic experimentation and curious song structures that also define later Causa Sui records are there (just listen to those echo-treated flutes in "Passing Breeze"), but what really ties this record together is an unashamed appreciation of the grand rock tradition of the previous four decades. One can literally feel how the young lads had been absorbing endless amounts of Blue Cheer, Led Zeppelin, Mudhoney, Black Sabbath, and Kyuss before cooking up these seven tracks. There's no shortage of killer riffs and Bonham-esque grooves. The culmination is the epic breathtaking acid-rock finale that takes up the entire second disc: the 15-minute "Newborn Road" and the 20-minute extended live version of the band's signature track "El Paraiso", captured in front of a mesmerized crowd at Roadburn on the very day Free Ride was released. It's impossible not feel swept away by the Hendrixian glory of these two cuts, as they fly from tranquil noodlings to the most thunderous peaks. This is the kind of album where one dropa the needle and rides it all the way to the end, as if overwhelmed by an awesome natural force. Includes 20-minute bonus track recorded live at the Roadburn Festival in 2007. Remastered by Jonas Munk.

SPIELGUSHER Spielgusher 2LP
"Spielgusher represents the meeting of two of America's great artists, Richard Meltzer and Mike Watt. There is additional musical accompaniment by guitarist Hirotaka Shimizu and drummer Yuko Araki, but the basic semiotic brunt of this meeting is shouldered by Richard and Mike. A collaboration between the two had been postulated back when the Minutemen still walked the Earth, but that dream was canceled with D Boon met his tragic fate in December 1985. Still, Meltzer and Watt kept in touch and tried to think of what they might do together. Around 2011 they arrived at solution. Richard had recorded a bunch of material for Mike, and Watt finally decided to go into the studio with a couple of his Japanese musician pals to cut a long set of jams and splats to go along with the words. Mike put the finished session, also called Spielgusher, out as a CD on his own clenchedwrench label, but we never really felt a though that release got into the hands or ears or brains of the many folks who'd dig hearing it. Consequently, here is a 2LP reprise of the set, with lovely new cover art, provided by Raymond Pettibon (another long-time Meltzer fan, and one who actually witnessed the debut performance of VOM at Kahuna's Bearded Clam, back when we were all a lot younger). Meltzer's words range from hilarious to shocking, and anyone who has attended one of his readings will agree that his performance is fully on point here. The musical inventions the trio tosses up to meet his words are fantastic - abstract or pointed at various times, melodic or noisome as befits the mood, but all with the compact econo lines that are Watt's stock-in-trade. There are perhaps some out there for whom Meltzer's poems will prove to be stronger word-meat than they are used to, but most of us are surely made of stronger stuff. And this album will be welcome manna to ear-teeth everywhere. Chew slowly and see." --Byron Coley, 2018. Edition of 500.

HURLEY, MICHAEL Living Ljubljana LP
"In March 1995, soon after the German Veracity label issued Wolfways, and just before they did Parsnips Snips (1995) (Hurley's first vinyl after a nine-year drought), the Great Snock undertook his first European tour. Joined by bassist Robert Michener (from the Richmond scene Hurley'd been involved in) and percussionist Mickey Bones (legendary Boston drummer & bones player), Hurley hit a bunch of places and Germany and also KLUB K4 in Llubjana, Slovenia, where this set was recorded. The sound is beautiful, the band plays with lazy perfection, and Hurley's vocals are energetically melodic. He does some songs that were only released on the series of cassettes that immediately preceded Wolfways ('Horse's Ass,' 'The Beggar's Terms'), stuff from Wolfways ('Letter in Neon,' 'Portland Water,' 'I Paint a Design'), classics like 'O My Stars,' and a few cover tunes. And More! Packed up in a new Hurley art cover design (based on the Euro tour t-shirt), with great liner notes detailing the rigors of a German press junket from right before the tour-proper, this package is sure to please discerning Snockophiles of all stripes. It's a fantastic spin. Dig in today." --Byron Coley, 2018.

UTOPIA CLOAK Marina Garden 12"
Utopia Cloak arrives on FILM with Marina Gardens. Utilizing both electronic and acoustic components, the British producer crafts hazy, dynamic electronica with a decidedly emotive bent. The music explores a curious production aesthetic -- at once half-sunk and at the same time gloriously crisp and direct. Caustic drum machine hits underpin the majority of the work, compete with polyrhythmic rolls and glitches, while softly warping synth lines occupy the majority of the remaining sonic space. Rather than working explicitly with nostalgia, Utopia Cloak makes more subtle references to the classic sounds of yore -- riffing on Downtempo and IDM with gentle and considered nuance, eking out arcane hooks and rich melodies with a pleasing focus on compositional structure and songcraft. Contrast is the key here, though; Utopia Cloak works hard to find the balance between metallic percussion strikes and wide-angle instrumental elements, avoiding chaos in favor of a lush, rewarding listening experience.

HARLEM RIVER DRIVE Harlem River Drive LP
"''New York's Harlem River Drive is a dividing line, a highway where the rich zip past the poor,' says singer Jimmy Norman. Eddie Palmieri's Latin-funk band of the same name tackled these hard truths, playing prisons and speaking to the common man. Ultimately, Norman and Palmieri made a powerful socio-political statement that continues to resonate to this day.' --Pablo Yglesias/Wax Poetics When initially released in 1971, many critics panned Eddie Palmieri's 1971 album Harlem River Drive. Clearly, those critics were wrong. Regardless of critical opinion, the release was not the crossover success Palmieri and Roulette Records had hoped for, at least in the immediate. Over the years the release has developed a following among listeners, DJs and aficionados of rare-grooves. The record may have been recorded towards the end of the Latin soul era, yet it features that genre's wonderful mix of Puerto Rican soul, Spanish Harlem Latin, and New York funk. Palmieri worked with an incredibly talented crew of Latin and R&B session musicians to create this quintessential New York vibe, a synthesis of funk and Afro-Cuban sounds. Contributors include Victor Venegas from Mongo Santamaria's band, Palmieri's brother Charlie, an accomplished musician in his own right, Bruce Fowler who went on to join Frank Zappa's band, Dick Meza who went on to great things with Tito Puente, Ray Barretto and Celia Cruz, as well as Andy Gonzalez whose pedigree includes recordings with Barretto, Johnny Pacheco, Willie Colon and even Chico O'Farrill. Also appearing Randy Brecker and one of the all-time greatest of the greats Bernard Purdy. An over-arching theme of Harlem River Drive is the thought that, as Palmieri puts it 'The U.S. is richest country, all this immense wealth, side by side with the most intense poverty, racial prejudice; how is that possible?' A question that's perhaps more even more relevant today than it was in 1971. A question that can be further explored with Get On Down's reissue of this seminal recording."

UPSETTERS, THE Rhythm Shower LP
"Between the twin pillars of Cloak and Dagger and Blackboard Jungle Dub, the superlative, yet often overlooked, Rhythm Shower album was also released in '73. Originally issued in a very limited Jamaican pressing with no sleeve, it became better known when re-released by the Trojan label as part of its 3 LP, and later 2-CD set, The Upsetter Collection, first issued in 1986. Despite its obscurity, Rhythm Shower is a pivotal album in Perry's career as a producer and bandleader; it finds him beginning to experiment with dub and developing his singular studio sound that would come to full maturity in subsequent years. Whereas earlier albums offered plenty of instrumental versions, on Rhythm Shower, Perry really begins employing the studio sleight of hand that would become part and parcel for what was then the emerging art form of dub -- dropping voices and instruments in and out of the mix to create a trippy, hypnotic effect. Not to go unnoticed is the mighty Upsetters themselves, whose revolving crew of musical heavyweights included Bob Marley & The Wailers future rhythm section Aston 'Family Man' Barrett on bass and drummer Carlton Barrett. The powerhouse rhythms they forged give Perry all the space he needs to work his mojo at the mixing desk. With one foot planted firmly in the celebrated sound of the time and the other stepping assuredly into the future, Rhythm Shower is essential listening for any fan of Reggae, Dub or Lee Perry. This is crucial music. This is classic Scratch."

PASTRANA & HIS ORCHESTRA, JOEY Let's Ball LP
"Joey Pastrana had a special gift for singing songs in both English and Spanish. Along with other boogaloo luminaries like Pete Rodriguez and Joe Cuba; Joey Pastrana was responsible for introducing Latin music to many English speakers across America. With a wonderful and talented orchestra, Joey Pastrana paved the way for the new Latin music fusions that have come to be known as the Latin boogaloo. A master of the timbales, Pastrana was also a brilliant singer known internationally for his energizing live performances. Honing his musical skills in his beloved New York City, Joey was enamored at an early age by the sights and sounds coming out of Spanish Harlem during the early sixties. Taking his cue from the R&B and Jazz that was popular at that time, Pastrana became a master of rolling rhythms that shook up hips in dance floors throughout the world. Glass Modern present the first vinyl issue of Thurston Moore and Tom Surgal's Klangfarbenmelodie.. And The Colorist Strikes Primitiv. Originally released on CD in 1995 only in New Zealand by the Dead C's Bruce Russell on his Corpus Hermeticum label. Edited by Bruce Russell for this Glass Modern release. New liner notes by Bruce Russell. 180 gram, white vinyl."A 1995 release from the famed Sonic Youth guitarist, this recording sees him paired with free jazz drummer Tom Surgal for a blistering noise set, in keeping with New Zealand noise label Corpus Hermeticum's aesthetic. The listener should not expect the sweet psychedelic pop of his Psychic Hearts album of the same year; rather, Moore explores his interest in freeform improvisation on this live set recorded in 1994. The recording is lo-fi, but that adds to it's candid charm, as his guitar thrashing reaches peaks of noise only hinted at in early Sonic Youth. The duo works along lines that are more akin to the Blue Humans -- with whom drummer Surgal began -- and also seems influenced by such underground acts as Fushitsusha and the Dead C. Moore's guitar is so distinct, however, that many parts here could be mistaken for a live Sonic Youth recording from that band's more heady and chaotic '80s period." --Dean McFarlane, AllMusic

Hayal Hakikattir, produced by her and guitarist Ali Güçlü ?im?ek, is arguably more immediate and visceral than the first two, reflecting her and the band's growing reputation as a powerful live act. Istikrarl? Hayal Hakikattir, which translates as "Consistent Fantasy is Reality", is a deeply poetic album; an album of personalized politics, an album that digs into the heart our contentious, inexplicable contemporary experience. Gaye Su Akyol: "'Consistent Fantasy is Reality' is the third album in my discography . . . Like my second album, it is published by Dunganga Records (our own record company) in Turkey and by Glitterbeat worldwide. In terms of its philosophy, lyrics, music and motto, this album is the dream of pure freedom, of showing the courage to be yourself, of looking at the culture I was born into without alienation, a 'dreaming practice' propounded into a country and world that is increasingly turning inward and becoming a conservatized prison. Musically the album combines influences from the Anatolian pop/Anatolian rock genre that emerged in Turkey during the '60s and the '70s with Turkish classical music scales and vocal aesthetics, and various subgenres of rock (psychedelic, post-punk, surf), bringing together strong ballads, Turkish folk tunes, the conventional guitar-bassdrums trio with percussions, joined by violin, oud, cumbush, and -- as new additions that the previous albums did not have -- baglama (Turkish native instrument), electronic beats, and wind instruments like saxophone and trumpet, all together making up a very rich instrumental palette." LP version comes on 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code. Personnel: Gaye Su Akyol - vocals, percussions, electronics; Ali Güçlü ?im?ek - electric and acoustic guitar, back vocal; Görkem Karabudak - bass and acoustic guitar, keyboard, electronics, back vocal; Ediz Haf?zo?lu - drums; ?lhan Er?ahin - saxophone; Barlas Tan Özemek - classical guitar (?ahmeran); Ahmet Ayzit - violin, oud, electro saz, cumbush; Ismail Dar?c? - percussions; O?uz Can Bilgin - trumpet.

FOFOULAH Daega Rek LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code. The London-based Afro-dub ensemble Fofoulah have followed-up their debut album Fofoulah (GB 017 CD/LP, 2014) with a more shape-shifting and adventurous recording. Slippery sabar beats, dystopian electronics, and echoing, shamanic chants ratchet up both the dub quotient and the dramatic tension. Creating a sound-world that is both earthy and urban, futurist and rooted - their new album Daega Rek (The Truth) is brought into focus by the rhythms and vocals of Gambian sabar drummer Kaw Secka and the vivid production of keyboardist/saxophonist Tom Challenger. After the release of Fofoulah, the band played extensively in the U.K. and Europe where every concert would see Secka rise to the microphone with his tama (a talking drum) and rap over the last song, cueing rhythmic patterns for the group to play in unison. It was decided to take this exploratory part of the shows forward into the next realm. The concept that emerged for the Daega Rek involved combining recordings of drums and percussion with improvisatory vocalizations and a production aesthetic that pushed the band's collective sound in a much more electronic and dub-based direction. The resultant tracks were shaped by Challenger in his studio, fusing the new rhythm sessions with a variety of manipulated, previous recordings of the band, while also adding an array of synthesizers. Secka then came in to lay down vocals and it was these contributions that went on to define the final songs. Every song has a different meaning, or message, all of them sung in Wolof, a language central to coastal West African countries such as The Gambia and Senegal. Secka's lyrics explore a myriad of topics -- "Njite" for example, focuses on the importance of leadership, and all that it entails; "Seye" (Marriage) explores the nature of human connection; and the title track sets its lens on truth and the riddles of reality. The rhythmic propulsion of the initial recordings made by drummer Dave Smith and Secka at Real World, melds with a backdrop of shifting sonic colors; Johnny Brierley's melodic bass lines underpin the patterns of Phil Stevenson's guitar which intersect with Challenger's keyboards and Secka's incantations. The emphasis on sonic structure and the identity of the material showcases its influences - traditional sabar drumming meeting glitchy electronics and dub textures blending with elements of footwork and drum and bass. Fofoulah remind us that sonic and human experiences combine, resonate and land where they will.

MESANGE Gypsy Moth LP
Mésange is a collaboration between composer/violinist Agathe Max and composer/musician Luke Mawdsley (Cavalier Song). Their second release, Gypsy Moth, anticipates the forces of nature, creation and rebirth. Mordant musical tapestries (minimalism, drone, and ambient) are washed in dense electric skies, exposing signs that flutter and flare in dark elegance. The listener, like the moth is drawn precariously on a journey towards the light, a parchment moon hovering on tides of vermillion heat, where eager wings beat and pulse abstract sounds.

BRIX & THE EXTRICATED Breaking State CD
Brix & The Extricated return with Breaking State, on which they have pushed the sonic boundaries set by their debut, Part 2 (2017). While retaining much of what was loved about Part 2, this record demonstrates musical muscle and rapid growth of artistic intent. While the sonic thread of their time in The Fall is still clearly evident, there are many surprises and unexpected corners throughout Breaking State. This album is packed with seriously infectious choruses and killer guitar work. Each of the ten songs is rifled with the gut-wrenching power chords, driving riffs and technical dexterity of Jason Brown's guitar contrasted against the delicate beauty of Steve Trafford's moody, atmospheric, transportative soundscapes. Smith Start comes into her own as a vocalist here delivering every word with intent while emotionally engaging the listener and resetting the bar of expectation stepping out of preconceived, conditioned perceptions of previously well-trodden paths. Vocally, we hear a voice that ranges from vulnerable delicacy to the battle cry of a warrior. The addition of strings adds a surprise multi-dimensional emotional texture throughout, seamlessly supporting Start's message. At times the strings hark back to the golden age of Hollywood glamour, resulting in a wonderful collision where MGM meets post-punk rainy Manchester. Lyrically, this album is a metamorphosis and transformation moving from black-and-white to full blown Technicolor. Breaking State is a deeply personal album, written from truth.

PLYXY Gloryland LP
Originally issued by Ascetic House as a small limited-run cassette release, PLYXY's Gloryland now be available on vinyl by Swiss imprint Hallow Ground. The nostalgia that informs Gloryland is PLYXY's longing for his cultural-geographic roots while feeling adrift in an alien environment. Born in Dnepropetrovsk, then the rocket-making capital of the USSR, Knopov immigrated to New York City as a child in 1989. In Gloryland, he dives deep into his uneasy childhood memories and their warped reflections. PLYXY marks the unreliability of his recollections by making it heard; the anthemic qualities of the five pieces are coated in an opaque layer of dream-like textures. From the elegiac opener, "It Will Be Beautiful", to the blaring rhythmic noise of "March of Youth", the greyscale picture painted by Gloryland becomes more and more refined below the surface. PLYXY's search for a past is, however, less a sentimental journey, and more a radical confrontation with the politics of memory and the materials that serve as mnemonic devices. Gloryland draws on field recordings from Knopov's adopted hometown New York and Soviet films as well as performances from his collection of analog and digital keyboards, with the results filtered and re-textured through the producer's modular synthesizer setup acting as the final editorial layer in the creative process. The result is lush and warm throughout, but also demure and distant.

VAN HOUDT, REINIER Igitur Carbon Copies LP
Reinier Van Houdt returns to Hallow Ground with an album based on the unfinished gothic tale Igitur, a collection of texts that eventually was abandoned by its author Stéphane Mallarmé in 1869. Connecting with Mallarmé's obsessions about chance and destiny, Igitur Carbon Copies is the fragmentation of all the roots that ran under its predecessor Paths Of The Errant Gaze (HG 1606LP, 2016) and brings these to a provisional close: guided by David Tibet's voice reading the reworked text we descend through spheres of deserted anthems, disembodied voices, Morse signals, crank calls, corroded tapes, radio statics, stones, while doing counting games. Here the acoustical spaces are manifold, blended or shifted in a heartbeat, where far and near, up and down are relative, where Riemann's god is pointless and angels are enjoying their space. Here perception is a vice that constantly hallucinates realities. Van Houdt has built himself an unusual repertoire that consistently resulted from personal quests; from composing with non-musical sources, from collaborations with composers & musicians, from research in archives or from unorthodox studies of classical music. He collaborated with artists like Francisco López, Maria de Alvear, Robert Ashley, Luc Ferrari, Annea Lockwood, Alvin Curran, John Cage, Christian Marclay, Walter Marchetti, Charlemagne Palestine, and joined the legendary outsider-collective Current 93 in 2012. 180 gram clear vinyl.

OLIVERI, NICK N.O. Hits At All Vol. 5 CD
Nick Steven Oliveri (born October 21, 1971) is an American musician from Palm Desert, California. He plays bass guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and is a vocalist. He is most widely known as a bassist with Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, and Dwarves, and has also performed with the reunited Kyuss under the names Kyuss Lives! and Vista Chino. As a bandleader, his main project is Mondo Generator, a punk/metal hybrid that he formed in 1997. Born in Los Angeles, Oliveri began his career in 1987 with John Garcia, Brant Bjork, Josh Homme and Chris Cockrell under the name Katzenjammer. In early 1989, after Oliveri's departure to play in other bands, the band would change its name to Sons of Kyuss, later shortening the name to Kyuss. He later rejoined the band, playing on the albums Wretch (1991) and Blues For The Red Sun (1992). Oliveri would leave Kyuss again in early 1992, shortly after his father died in a car accident. Following his departure from Kyuss he joined The Dwarves as an on-again, off-again bassist under the moniker Rex Everything. However, he is perhaps best known as a member of Queens of the Stone Age from 1998 to 2004. Oliveri is also a solo artist and frequent contributor to his friends' albums and tours, including Winnebago Deal, Mark Lanegan Band, Masters of Reality, Turbonegro, Moistboyz aka Dickie Moist and the O.T.C., and The Knives. He is also one half of the acoustic duo The Uncontrollable, with The Dwarves frontman Blag Dahlia. Oliveri on the record: "Now for the first time, all these songs and bands I've recorded with over the past 25 years are together and available to you to trip out on." Vol. 5 features The Dwarves, Simon Strokes, Mondo Generator, Death Acoustic, Svetlanas, and The Situationalists.

FOUR HORSEMEN Nada Canadada LP
The Four Horsemen was a sound poetry group of Canadian poets composed of bpNichol, Rafael Barreto-Rivera, Paul Dutton, and Steve McCaffery. They started performing in 1970 and quickly moved from radical improvisation to the use of a notational system, with an effort to develop a scoring method adequate to the group's dynamic and visceral sound show. The four-piece soon became a living workshop with regular weekly rehearsals leading to the best refined group-conceived and group-written compositions. The third volume in a series of sound poetry coordinated by Luca Garino, Nada Canadada, nine outbursts of controlled madness dedicated to the memory of Hugo Ball is indeed one of the highest examples of poetry as product of a community. "The number of words we still use in our poetry comes as somewhat of a surprise to us, especially in the light of this album. Strictly speaking we cannot call what we do sound poetry if by it is meant that poetry which has its basis in non-verbal, vocal, and sub-vocal elements of sound. Nor are we into the electronic ramifications of sound in any sense beyond doing a record. We are in fact reluctant to pin the aesthetic continuum on which we operate to the first wall available. Still, perhaps the best name for what we do is what it always has been: poetry". --Rafael Barreto-Rivera. Edition of 250, embossed lettering, 16-page booklet.

LUCID DREAM, THE Actualisation CD
The Lucid Dream return with their fourth album, Actualisation. Driven by fans raising £10,000 to help replace all equipment robbed after a Paris show in early 2017, a new album became the instant focus in the summer of 2017 for a rejuvenated The Lucid Dream. Actualisation is soaked in the influence of acid house, amalgamated with dub and Kosmische. It will again see them acknowledged for venturing into pastures new, setting themselves apart from 'genres', 'scenes' or what any other act are currently doing. The album was penned over the summer of 2017 by Mark Emmerson (vocals/guitar/synths), using only the classic Roland 303/808 synths, bass and vocals as tools for writing. Inspiration for the writing was formed via continuous listening to the Chicago to UK acid house works of 1986-1992, the focus predominantly on the groove. Recorded at Whitewood Studios, Liverpool, with Rob Whiteley, the album is produced alongside long-time collaborator Ross Halden (Ghost Town Studios, Leeds), with mastering via Dean Honer (All Seeing I/I Monster/The Moonlandingz). The Lucid Dream formed in Carlisle, in 2008. A string of sold-out 7?s was followed by the debut longer player, Songs Of Lies And Deceit (HAY 004CD, 2013). The Lucid Dream (HAY 007CD) was released in March 2015 to further acclaim. Their third album, Compulsion Songs (HAY 009CD/LP) was released in September 2016, on Holy Are You Recordings. COHRAN & THE HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE, KELAN PHILIP Kelan Philip Cohran & The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble 2LP
2018 repress; double LP version. For the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, the voyage to where they are now -- whether tearing up festivals from Glastonbury to Melbourne, or touring with Gorillaz, or recording their first album on Honest Jon's -- has involved a necessary stepping away from their father's shadow. Phil Cohran is the first to recognize this, happily allowing their sound -- heavy on the funk, with the urgency of hip-hop never far away -- to blossom. But likewise this album is for all of them a natural step. Recorded in Chicago in June 2011, the idea was beautifully simple -- "my music and their band." This is music that plumbs the depths and rings with joy.

HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE Book Of Sound 2LP
2018 repress; Double LP version. With its cathedral-like, richly resonant acoustics, the new Hypnotic Brass Ensemble album Book Of Sound is a brilliant expression of this interplanetary principle. The album is by turns urgent and contemplative, funky and reflective, varied in its textures; but entirely of one piece. Underpinned by concepts of earth's place in the cosmos, held in place by meditation, swirling with notions of history, science, theology, ancestry, there is a rich conceptual brew here. The album rings with what back in the 1950s the jazz critic Whitney Balliet called "the sound of surprise". Book Of Sound makes you believe again in the validity of "spiritual jazz". Talking to Cid, one of the Ensemble's two trombonists, one phrase recurs: "back to the beginning". "We wanted to go back to the beginning, when we were kids, real young, and our father would wake us up at 5AM to practice for two hours before breakfast." One outcome -- initially unplanned but subsequently embraced -- is that unlike their two previous albums on Honest Jon's, this is an album without a drummer. "When we started, as Wolf Pack, just brothers on the street with our horns, there wasn't a kit in sight." Book Of Sound retains plenty of rhythmic heft, but the absence of a drummer opens up space for a notably varied instrumental palette. Acoustic guitar, piccolo, synthesizer, alto sax -- all have their place on the album. Most striking perhaps are the vocal lines that thread through the album and give it a palpable warmth. Sessions were recorded in Brooklyn and Chicago, and brilliantly mixed at Abel Garibaldi's studio in the Loop, and it's the Hypnotic's hometown that permeates. For Cid this is a deeply Chicago record: "It's got the vibe of the lake, the vibe of the prairies opening up to the west." It also has the vibe of those Sun Ra Arkestra albums recorded in Chicago in the 1950s, and -- of course -- the Phil Cohran albums from the 1960s. It's Phil Cohran (the father of all seven members of the Ensemble and their first teacher, and not just in music) who is the album's guiding spirit. For Cid it's a major regret that, in the months before their father's death early in 2017, Phil was not well enough to play on the album. But Book Of Sound is a magnificent testament to their Cohran legacy.

VAUDOU GAME Otodi CD
Vaudou Game return to Hot Casa with Otodi, their first album in two years. No one had been through those doors in years. Unchanged, seemingly untouched, just a guard watching over it -- one wondered whether the place would ever see the light of day again. Built in the 1970s by Scotch, there were only twenty such places in the entire world. Twenty studios, all identical. Most had undergone a digital makeover in the 1980s, but not this one. Situated in Lome, Togo this studio had stayed true to its original form. Silent and uninhabited but waiting for one thing, and one thing only: for the sacred fire to be lit once again. Through thick layers of dust, the console was vibrating still, impatient to be turned on and spurt out the sound so unique to analog. That sound is what Peter Solo and his band Vaudou Game came to seek out. The original vibrations of Lome's sound, resonating within the studio space, an undercurrent pulsing within the walls, the floor, the entire atmosphere. A presence at once electrical and mystical, sourced through the amps that had never really gone cold, despite the deep sleep that they had been forced into. In taking over the studio' s 3000 square feet, enough to house a full orchestra, Vaudou Game had the space necessary to conjure the spirits of voodoo, those very spirits who watch over men and nature, and with whom Peter converses every day. For the most authentic of frequencies to fully imbibe this third album, Peter Solo entrusted the rhythmic section to a Togolese bass and drum duo, putting the groove in the expert hands of those versed in feeling and a type of musicianship that you can' t learn in any school. This was also a way to put Otodi on the path of a more heavily-hued funk sound the backbone of which maintains flexibility and agility when moving over to highlife, straightens out when enhanced with frequent guest Roger Damawuzan's James Brown-type screams, and softens when making the way for soulful strings. Snaking and undulating when a chorus of Togolese women takes over, guiding it towards a slow, hypnotic trance. Up until now, Vaudou Game had maintained their connection to Togo from their base in France. VAUDOU GAME Otodi 2LP
Double LP version. This time, recording the entire album in Lome at Otodi with local musicians, Peter Solo drew the voodoo fluid directly from the source, once again using only Togolese scales to make his guitar sing, his strings acting as channels between listeners and deities.

YAMAOKA Selected Works: Fragmentary Memories 2x12"
Indigo Aera releases Selected Works: Fragmentary Memories, a truly special project from Japan's Yamoaka. Yamoaka was originally formed by renowned Japanese duo Kenichi Oka and Yoshinori Yamazaki; after 2007 the project was continued solo by Oka. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Kraftwerk and Y.M.O., Oka masterfully uses hardware to create unique loop based sounds drawing resemblances to minimalist Steve Reich's signature sound, while blending in techno-esque elements comparable to those of Terrence Dixon's Population One alias, finding a harmonious middle ground between the two. Oka achieves a live feel to all his work, recording his tracks in real time without the use of DAW's or computers, instead utilizing his Roland MC50 sequencer with perfect effect. As long-time fans of Kenichi's work, Indigo Aera bosses Jasper and Maarten approached him to release a retrospective selection of his works for the first time on vinyl. The result is a collection of hand-picked tracks previously released on CD-only plus four completely new and unheard pieces. Edition of 298.

With this 12", International Black waste no time in cementing their mission statement to provide a platform for dark, functional, and highly effective club music. Neinzer presents "Weiblich", a surgical slice of sound art masquerading as techno; a brutally effective piece of programming that seamlessly switches from beatless interlude to a thundering 909 work out. On the other side is Losian in full power. "He's My Brother" is an unrelenting, hypnotic cut that is a master class in build and release dynamics.

Complex jazz chords swim around 909's to create an elevating techno roller that climbs and climbs only to give way to sparse rave stabs and ecstatic snare patterns.

VULLIAMY, ABY Spin Cycle CD
"'I find it tedious that, in music, we usually only see one type of love represented,' says Yorkshire composer, musician, and music therapist Aby Vulliamy. 'I'm not interested in writing about that.' Spin Cycle, Vulliamy's debut album, is indeed an album about love: love at its most transformative, love at its most dreary, love at its most challenging, love at its most desperate. It is, to quote the writer who has found her voice in these songs, an album about 'love, life and the reality of parenthood -- not just the pink and fluffy bits.' 'For years, I thought of myself as a purely social musician who couldn't self-generate -- that my strength was in taking what someone else had put out there, and adding to it,' explains Vulliamy. 'That's the role of the viola: you don't notice that we're there until we screw up.' 'It's only since having had my daughters that I've been able to put words to music. Motherhood turned my life upside down and suddenly, sitting there in the dark, the words just flowed.' The result is both intimate and visceral, full of snatched moments and vivid imagery. Opening track 'Spin Cycle' effectively captures domestic drudgery in four lines, performed in the round. 'Rock Me Tender' is an evocative portrayal of the lonely, quiet, sleep-deprived terror of a breastfeeding mother. The frantic, furious 'Good Enough' delivers a jarring, atonal riposte to society's judgment of women, mothers or not, once they reach childbearing age while 'This Precious Time' acts as the album's heart as Vulliamy's layered vocals, backed by rich, mournful trombone and double bass, at once lament and celebrate the inevitable growth of her children from infants to little women. Vulliamy credits long-time collaborator Stevie Jones (Sound of Yell) with 'making the album happen' -- by encouraging her to properly document material she had only ever considered performing live, but also in the more practical sense of engineering, producing and mixing the tracks over a period of four years at Glasgow's Chem19 and Kinning Park Complex studios. Work and child-rearing made recording time scattered and precious, making Vulliamy keen to acknowledge the roles played by her musician partner George Murray, whose trombone contributions appear on the album, and Jones' partner Jill Wilson in giving the album space to come together. Bill Wells (melodica), Fritz Welsh (percussion) and Christina Rhys (harp) also appear." --Lisa-Marie Ferla

RABBIT RABBIT RADIO Vol. 2: Swallow Me Whole CD
"Rabbit Rabbit Radio is the song-spinning duo of Carla Kihlstedt and Matthias Bossi. Collectively, they are founding members of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Tin Hat, 2 Foot Yard, Causing a Tiger, The Book of Knots, and Fred Frith's Cosa Brava. Drawing on their love of both art & folk song, industrial & improvised music and heart-wrenching balladry, their songs are raw, beautiful, sparse and rich. Originally these songs came out on the duo's bandcamp page. Subscribers got new songs as soon as they were finished, later these were collected into album format. Rabbit Rabbit Radio Vol. 1 was released on CD in 2013 by the band themselves. Klanggalerie are happy to present you Volume 2 for the first time ever on CD. These songs are a missing link between rock/pop and the avanatgarde. Carla Kihlstedt says: 'The songs I write sit on the border between popular music and art song. Where exactly, depends on the subject matter and on the language and strengths of the performers I'm working with. I've never worried that one kind of audience won't understand the other kind of song. Every listener has their own musical reference points, but I've always found people across the (hypothetical) divide to be incredibly open-minded and generous.'"

FOX, HARDY Rilla Contemplates Love CD
"Hardy Fox used to be composer for The Residents. He left the group when he didn't feel fit enough for touring. Since then, he has released many albums under the name Charles Bobuck, switching to his real name Hardy Fox when his albums became more personal. The first, self-titled and also known under the name Heart, is a study of the young Hardy Fox, an album about Love. The second, Nachtzug is about his last days touring with The Residents. After a break from recording, Hardy Fox is now back with a concept album about a gorilla: 'A few years ago a study was done by scientists who were really interested by the idea of how gorillas think. Work was being encouraged by the success of sign language with a gorilla named Koko, who unfortunately recently died. The new research was investigating if they could get information by working with computers directly taking information from the mind of a friendly gorilla. Rilla. Hardy Fox did not get the actual results, but did get inspired by his own mind as it was sent into the imagination of what a gorilla might think.'"

Made up of members from Juanita Y Los Feos and La Urss this trio have a strong work ethic and deal in super catchy and upbeat punk. On Justicia Cósmica, Rata Negra have upped the pop element in the songs and the production is stronger and chunky, without losing any of the raw elements. Again the whole sound is immersed in the darker and morbid side of post punk but mixed with the up-tempo nature and tunes and of LA's X and Gorilla Angreb. Like on their debut, it's love at first listen. Barcelona's Ultra managed to stay still long enough to compose and record their debut, Alta Montana. This time around you can see they have had space, maybe even mental space, to put together an extremely well-balanced and produced record. The wild riffing is still there; so is the seamless rhythm section backing one of the most energetic voices in current hardcore punk. Perhaps the most noticeable changes are the delay vocals and the electronic segments and intros joining the 11 tracks together. Don't worry, Ultra is still an anti-authoritarian riff powerhouse but this time they are proving that you can keep one foot firmly pressed in the political hardcore scene while breaking free of musical expectations.

REDSHAPE A Sole Game CD
One of Berlin's most iconic and recognized underground producers is back with his new album A Sole Game. Following up 2012's Square (RB 005CD/LP), Redshape continues to forge distinctly cinematic and suspenseful dance music, blurring lines of past, present and future. As a true disciple of '90s techno, that era's sounds have always been an essential part of his musical DNA, while avoiding simple re-enactment. As on previous full-lengths, his tracks build dark and eerily romantic narratives of their own. Sebastian Kramer may have kept his Redshape project faceless in the past, but his music has always been driven by a strong personality. "I always tried to do my own interpretation of something I really liked," as Kramer puts it. For The Dance Paradox (DSR 080CD/LP), his 2009 debut, his old love for the Chemical Brothers's organic sound made him incorporate live drums. On Square, he recreated Brian Eno's '70s tape-looping setups. A Sole Game marks a departure from this slightly imitative approach, spawning his most self-aware record to date. The title hints at this process of self-reflection; if this whole business of music-making is nothing more than a game, an album is the only chance for its players to show their skills. In typical Redshape style, the eight tracks of A Sole Game take one on a journey through nighttime worlds and dusky industrial landscapes haunted by howls and other strange voices. It's obvious that one of the most important goals was to craft a seamless whole of an electronic album that works without interludes or what others would consider "album material". Each track is a universe of its own and ready to be played in a club. A limited amount of instruments made it possible for the songs to sound quite homogenous despite being constructed very diversely. Most of the melodic structures stem from a Prophet 12 synth; most of the drums from 808s and 909s, providing a warm and analog sound. This traditionalist techno setup allowed for a fast and immediate workflow while recording the foundations of each track. Later on, Kramer took these recordings and elaborately arranged and processed them, trying to maintain the sometimes naive and pure emotions of the initial recordings and establish an organic feel. By fusing this proper songwriter approach with the codes of techno, Redshape takes a big step forward in his musical evolution.

RADIO BIRDMAN Descent Into The Maelstrom: The Radio Birdman Story DVD
"The true story of Radio Birdman, the pre-punk band that changed Australian music forever. This critically acclaimed documentary, shows the uncompromising attitude and high energy rock'n'roll ethos of the band that was the prototype for independent music in Australia. The film features interviews with all surviving members of the original band, along with rare archival footage and photos. The DVD contains 60 minutes worth of bonus material including live footage and interviews. In 1974 Deniz Tek and Rob Younger form Radio Birdman with a strict rule of no compromise and a raucous Detroit-style rock'n'roll. But Radio Birdman are shut down and kicked out of pubs in Sydney. Too confronting for the music industry, they started their own venue, The Funhouse and brought a new music to the 'New Race' of inner-city kids, looking for a soundtrack to rebellion. The 'bookish' band, including two medical students, became outlaws to the record industry, doing things their own way and releasing their own records before being spotted by Seymour Stein of Sire Records. But Radio Birdman's intensity turned inwards, and cracks started to appear in the band. During the 1978 tour of the UK the original band broke up acrimoniously. By that stage they had created a scene. Like the Velvet Underground or The Sex Pistols, everyone who saw them started their own band. Years later Radio Birdman reform, but internal conflict remains and they struggle to find peace with each other. Descent Into The Maelstrom is an uncompromising story, sometimes brutal, always honest. It's the story of any band, with intensity to the nth degree. Called 'effing brilliant!' and 'the best rock documentary ever made', it's a must for anyone interest in music, in bands and in high energy rock'n'roll." PAL/NTSC region 0.

Known from dance floors, club backrooms, bars, radio spins, Café del Mar compilations and TV spots the world over (most famously the "femme fatale Kronenbourg beer advert), "Slip..." established the duo at the forefront of a scene that includes Groove Armada, Air, Röyksopp and Zero 7. Now Kinobe are back in a big way; founding member and songwriter Julius Waters is joined by Chuck Norman, multi-instrumentalist, producer and programmer who has worked with the Pet Shop Boys, Peter Gabriel, and Robbie Williams. Norman has beefed up the classic Kinobe sound, while adding a pop sensibility to a raft of sparkling new material destined to soundtrack 2018 and beyond on Golden Age, the first Kinobe album in nine years. Lead single "Little Words" might just be one of the tunes of year, a Donny Hathaway-esque, soulful slice of too-slow-to-disco that nods towards '60s hipster grooves. At once instantly familiar and brand-new, the single is a heartfelt three-and-a-half-minute pop-dance floor-filler with a hook that once heard is never forgotten. Elsewhere the Stephen Hague-mixed "End Of The Road" is a huge gospel-tinged ballad destined to own daytime radio, "Skyhigh", is a gorgeously haunting sundowner, "Heartstring" is all cosmic soundtrack strings while "Sunray" is Kinobe at their very best, with its irresistible hooks, washes of melody and down-tempo beats. Golden Age is shaping up to be the chilled album of the year, a thirteen-track soundscape of sparkling songs and idiosyncratic instrumentals that is vintage Kinobe. Welcome to the Golden Age. PENYA Super Liminal Remixed 12"
Penya's debut LP Super Liminal (2017) receives a set of remixes. Photay provides a stylish, uniquely individual and layered rework of "Cham Bomb". Drama weaves elegantly with international flavors and a reference for future Afro-Cuban percussive electronica. The pulsing energy of Sarathy Korwar's fearsome drum rework is the closest of these reworks to the source material. Dengue Dengue Dengue bring their signature dreamy Amazonian-Berlin magic to cast spells and evoke dreamy emotive dynamics for adventurous floors with "Search it Out". Indian producer, and Penya's label mate, Daisho straightens up "Iyesa" and kick's it forward with a solid 4x4. Al Zanders remixes "Tribes".

CORSANO & BILL ORCUTT, CHRIS Brace Up! LP
Brace Up! is the first ever studio release from the duo of Chris Corsano (drums) and Bill Orcutt (guitar). Recorded in Brussels at Les Ateliers Claus by Christophe Albertijn on March 19th and 20th, 2018. Stage dive photograph by Jason Penner. "Over the past six years or so, drummer Chris Corsano has proven to be one of Bill Orcutt's most reliably flexible collusionists. Regardless of whether Bill is cluster-busting electric guitar strings, weaseling around with cracked electronics, or playing relatively spacious free-rock, Corsano is able to provide the proper base for his aural sculpting. A lot of Orcutt's instrumental work has traditionally felt hermetic even though he's exploring caverns of explosive ecstasy. One often got the impression Bill was operating in the way John Travolta did in the classic 1976 ABC television drama, The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. Orcutt's actual interaction with collaborators emerged not from communication so much as pure observation. While he was fully cognizant of his musical surroundings, his reactions to it were walled off. This approach did not encourage sonic dialogue so much as parallel streams of discourse. These streams could interact with each other, but not in particularly standard ways. On Brace Up! , their first ever studio release, this precept has changed considerably. Whether it's a function of emotional familiarity or an intellectual choice I dunno, but there's a whole new kind of duo exchange going down on this record. Bill and Chris are clearly playing off each other's moves throughout the album. And it really raises the level of the music to an all-time high. From the cop car see-saw of 'Poundland Frenzy' to the mutual pummeling of 'Paranoid Time' (possibly a Minutemen tribute?) to the lazychicken- gets-stung-prog of 'She Punched a Hole in the Moon for Me,' the sounds on Brace Up! display a constant flow of ideas and instantaneous conjugation of newly forged verbs. As great as Bill and Chris's previous duo records have been, this one's greater." -- Byron Coley

WINNEWISSER, BELIA Radikale Akzeptanz LP
Belia Winnewisser returns to Präsens Editionen. Radikale Akzeptanz is her debut album as a solo artist and it marks her second release after PE-010 (PE 010CS, 2017) on the label arm of Lucerne's zweikommasieben magazine. Radikale Akzeptanz is a furious amalgamation of synth-pop references and more abstract sounds, combining long-running traits from Winnewisser's practice in various band projects with rather new interests from her studies in sound art. Thus, bittersweet off-pop-hymns with bubbly melodies can be found next to more austere examinations. Add a good amount of time spent in clubs and you get a Skull Disco-esque banger at the end of this gutsy album. The title Radikale Akzeptanz (radical acceptance) stems from a concept in evidence-based psychotherapy. More than the concept as such that is about accepting uncompromisingly one's situation, however, it is the expression of mere sound that is of interest to Winnewisser. This music is at once homey and adventurous, gentle and challenging, at ease with itself and full of tension(s). Edition of 300, artwork by Vinzenz Meyner.

DUPUY, JEAN All Of The Time LP
All Of The Time is the first comprehensive album of Jean Dupuy's sound works, collecting recordings from 1969-2017. Dupuy started his artistic career as a painter but shifted his practice when he moved from France to New York in 1967. Dupuy experimented with new technologies, and soon became a prominent figure in the Art and Technology movement. In 1968 he participated with an inventive sound, light and color installation, Heart Beats Dust, in the landmark exhibition The Machine as Seen at the End of the Mechanical Age at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. In the early 1970s Dupuy started performing collectively with other New York artists, and his loft at 405 East 13th Street turned into a center for these performances. Dupuy also arranged similar events at the Whitney Museum, the Kitchen and the Judson Church. During his time in New York, which lasted until the early 1980s, Dupuy collaborated with over 200 artists, as an organizer of events and as an artist. Charlie Morrow poses the question: "But what about his sound art? Jean has a particular affinity for sound and vocalizing. The songs of his childhood, the French church tradition and the charming puzzlement of letter games and graphics. He has created an amplified heartbeat machine with blood red puffs of pigment, and short jingles, such as 'I like bananas; ain't no bone inside.'" In aligning this collection, a new piece came to be recorded specially for this LP, Concert of Seconds, a recording of a symphony of painted clocks that live in Jean's gallery in Nice, France. This LP was organized with the assistance of Christian Xatric and Charlie Morrow. 20-page insert with scores and texts, introduction sheet by Charlie Morrow. Edition of 220.

Ostrowski's record is a journey through futuristic polyrhythm, with enough space for menacing basses or unorthodox samples, reminding the aesthetics of fusion of broken techno and bass music championed recently by the labels like Timedance or Livity Sound.

"Have You Seen Her" is the kraut-disco curiosity from the EP, halfway between the Ghetto Brothers' rage and the funkiness of a Kurtis Blow's instrumental. "Buggy Tip" involves disco strings and catchy choruses to sing along to -- Cola Boyy turns it into a banger.

PERHAPS Hexagon LP
"The consequences of tampering with the fabric of reality are, and always have been, direct and brutal. An unrelenting quake of disruption amongst what we think, perceive, and accordingly act upon is an inevitable result, and thus leaves disaster in ways hard to conceive, much less prepare against. When these quakes initially began, the only logical cause was that Perhaps was again at the helm; though disruptive experimentation has always been a common practice of the band, it has become increasingly obvious things may have again gotten out of hand. Suspicions of a new album were presented by means of cryptic letters, and confirmed by reports of large quantities of beached whales and colossal squid washing up on various shores, as well as a disruption in the migratory pattern of elk nationwide. Following an interview with a local shaman, it appeared that Perhaps had stationed themselves somewhere in the great red canyons of Utah, apparently in attempt to create some sort of audio re-creation of cellular respiration. The band's success in doing so is hardly put to question, as all members have been front runners in the experimental recreation of natural principles through musical methods, and rarely come out empty-handed. Hexagon was crafted through similar unorthodox principles, leading scholars and music experts in various colleges to hypothesize that Hexagon exists within a shared linear relationship with the band' s previous album V (REPOSE 059LP, 2017). It has been confirmed core members and frequent contributors have returned with the making of Hexagon: (Jim Haney, Sean McDermott, David Khoshtinat, Ricky Petraglia, Ben Talmi, Tom Weeks) as well as appearances from collaborators Makoto Kawabata and Tabata Mitsuru (Acid Mothers Temple). Following cryptic letters sent to our office and eerie reports, several hikers in the Utah area reported hallucinations, as well as locals witnessing a massive blood red moon taking place the same evening. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that Hexagon was complete; many who were religious were granted time to seek refuge in their respective places of worship. For the listener, no pass is needed. And while what lies ahead may seem gargantuan, it is best to open one's mind and allow all that is necessary happen. Great spiritual wisdom is not attained without a daunting climb, and all Hexagon has to offer makes that climb worth the peril." --Samson Hailstone, Vancouver BC, 7/2/2018. LAST HURRAH!!, THE Los Angeles CD
The Last Hurrah!!'s Los Angeles started out as a commission work for the Vossajazz festival, and was performed in Voss in western Norway in March 2018. A far cry from Los Angeles, but to mastermind and founder HP Gundersen there are no boundaries in music and such differences are only sources of inspiration and natural parts of his vast musical universe. For the previous album Mudflowers (RCD 2171CD/RLP 3171LP, 2015), HP Gundersen "found" and recruited the perfect singer in Maesa Pullman, daughter of famed actor Bill Pullman. Coming from a musical family, she performs frequently in different musical constellations in Southern California, being a profiled presence in the local roots community. A songwriter in her own right, Maesa also handles guitar and piano as well as the drums. Since the release of Mudflowers, bass player, recording engineer and co-producer Jason Hiller has come onboard as a permanent member of the trio that currently serves as the core of The Last Hurrah!!. Originally seen as a one-off project, it soon became clear that the chemistry between the three went much deeper and far reaching than the Americana influences that dominated parts of Mudflowers.

LUNCH, LYDIA Marchesa LP
LP version. Limited golden vinyl; 499 copies; Gatefold poster with lyrics. "Lydia Lunch has never concealed her influence for a certain kind of literature. With Marchesa she pays homage to the writing and stories of the Marquis De Sade who has always been a great inspiration for her. With this album Lydia transports us into a world of sadism, perversion and pleasure. Accompanying her in this literary voyage there is a background of dissonant sounds, distorted orchestration and ambient noises composed by Stefano Rossello (Bahntier, Ketvector) and by Lunch herself. A sensual and perverse homage to sadism, spirituality and fulfilment. It is certainly one of Lydia Lunch's most complete and shocking works. An absolute must!"

VA Saigon Supersound Vol. 2 CD
Saigon Supersound Vol. 2 presents more interesting tunes of a musical era that has long been obscured. As with Saigon Supersound Vol. 1, (SSS 001CD/LP, 2017) this new volume digs deeper to share the beautiful music of a short but significant period in Vietnam's history. Much like the country itself, the music of Vietnam has endured many twists. As the result of the Geneva Accords in 1954, Vietnam was divided into two. From the North, the Nationalist forces fought to reunite Vietnam as a Communist state, while American troops backed the government of the South. This caused a mass migration of Northerners to the South, which included many Tân Nh?c (modern music) singers and songwriters. Tân Nh?c continued to develop in the South, moving on from the influences of its main inspiration, French music. In the North, the Resistance music, the so-called Nh?c ?? (Red Music), promoted socialism, patriotism and anti-capitalism and was the only genre allowed on national radio. Between 1954-1960, the theme of (quê h??ng), or hometown, was a main inspiration for many songwriters such as Hoàng Thi Th?, Lam Ph??ng and Nguy?n H?u Thi?t. The 9th track on the compilation, "Thôn Tr?ng M? H?i Tr?ng Tròn" showcases a variety of images often described in this genre: the harvest moon, playful children, an old mother. Every recording made in this era is then an organic combination of human experiences, communications and uniqueness. In 1965, the first American troops landed in Vietnam, bringing with them the musical influences of the likes of Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and Elvis Presley. The Vietnamese people quickly integrated it into the repertoire with the hope of further diversifying the music of Vietnam. Constantly changing and learning from different cultures, the modern music of Vietnam cuts a window into the soul of a Vietnamese person and the country's history as a whole. With that, the hope is that Saigon Supersound Vol. 2 would take you on a trip back to the unique atmosphere of Saigon through the different palettes of music that this beautiful place offers. Features: Carol Kim, Son Ca, Van Son, Elvis Ph??ng, Thanh Tuyên, Thanh Thuy, Phuong Dung, Thanh Lan, Tuy Phu?ng, Champagne, Hùng C??ng & Mai L? Huyên, Connie Kim, Tru?ng Hai, Mai L? Huyên, L? STEIGER Give Space LP
LP version with download code. Ghent's Steiger are a piano trio, but not in the classical sense. With their versatile style, influenced by different musical genres such as jazz, rock, pop, classical, and electronic music, they try to find a balance between composition and improvisation through the use of experimentation and electronics. Considered pioneers of the Belgian jazz crossover scene, Steiger have been active for six years and have recently found themselves performing at major jazz venues in Flanders, picking up numerous accolades along the way. The trio's highly anticipated sophomore album Give Space was recorded at seven different locations, with the music composed to fit and fight these locations within a dialogue of acoustics, atmospheres and appetition. Field recordings, reverbs, and ambient sounds are all collected within the search for the unpredictable, given space within this dialogue as an essential part of the encounter. As a result, the locations emerge somewhat as a fourth member of the trio. The music, sometimes fixed, sometimes completely free, thus becomes an ever-changing journey into their multi-faceted world.

LEVI & ELIZA MCCARTHY, MICA Slow Dark Green Murky Waterfall LP
Mica Levi returns to Slip with six piano pieces played by Eliza McCarthy on Slow Dark Green Murky Waterfall. The album is a crepuscular suite riddled with Mica's inquisitive, conversational phrasing and smartly expanding upon their 7" track, "Riding Through Drinking Harpo Dine", a new recording of which also appears in this set. The culmination of three years of work between Mica and Eliza -- winner of the 2013 British Contemporary Piano Competition -- Slow Dark Green Murky Waterfall follows up their collaboration on the Oscar-nominated score for Pablo Larrain's Jackie (2016) with a finer-shaded, patient space for low-lit, smoky expression that's so intimate and personal it almost feels like eavesdropping a private recording. Ineffably bound by a sense of unreal poise, Eliza's interpretations are subtly, dynamically rendered in-the-mix by Mica to present the pieces as though in flux, like poignant, unresolved statements that occur in the flow of quiet, intent dialogue and linger in the air. It's testament to the pair's well-honed intuition that the results connote this feeling so naturally. And it's maybe our familiarity with Mica's work, from her earliest chopped 'n screwed orchestrations, to her Under The Skin (2014) score and her mutant pop pieces, that we keep expecting hers or Tirzah's voice to match her melodies with wordless vocals or harmonious limns throughout the six pieces. That's probably simply down to the fact that Mica writes with such a pop-wise appeal and soulful sensitivity that it prompts sub-vocalization in every listener; the hook of these instrumentals will be floating in one's head for days, weeks, or a lifetime after they're imbibed. Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi, artwork by Mica Levi and Eliza McCarthy. Edition of 500.

ETELIN Hui Terra LP
"Hui Terra. The dreamlike shape of the half-heard word, abstracts with faint impressions of bucolic landscape, or handfuls of translucent and brightly-colored gemstones that hold odd, elusive, asymmetrical form. This enchanting, gently surreal debut album from Alex Cobb's Etelin project explores the power and playfulness of impulsive action diffused through electro-acoustic and ambient sound. This music was created with digital synthesizers and a sampler in the four months immediately following the birth of his first child, a hazy period marked by a lack of regular sleep and a diet of INA-GRM, Nuno Canavarro's Plux Quba (1988), and Microstoria's Init Ding (1995) records that appeared to produce both stimulating and soothing effects on a newborn's nascent consciousness. Recorded and arranged at all hours, this is an album that reflects on moments of tumult and fragility. Cobb sews small sharpnesses and surprises into its movements to uncover different aspects of each sound source, doubling as hypnic starts cast to advance and vary the narrative in subtle and unexpected ways. Sound and atmosphere manifest in eccentric, alchemical fashion, as though forming in processes of sublimation -- solids dissipating into vapor -- and deposition -- clouds resolving and dropping to the ground in piles -- to an obscure and domestic rhythm. There's the purveying sense of moving within the boundaries of small, hermetic ecosystem. This is underscored and doused by a slow, blooming sense of warmth; growing joy without bombast. Even the more startling textures conceal this same truth and emphasis, such as the alien, sour salt-butter electronic babble in "Little Rig", largely sampled from Cobb's son's voice at just a week old. It is emotional music -- devoted, affectionate, and playful." --Matthew Kent, February 2018. Edition of 500, includes download.

RAUSCHENBERG, KAT EPPLE, AND BOB STOHL, ROBERT Strategic Structures LP
Song Cycle Records present a reissue of Strategic Structures by Robert Rauschenberg, Kat Epple, and Bob Stohl, originally released in 1989. Available for the first time on vinyl, this is powerful instrumental music performed by the three on electronics, and a series of musical metal sculptures called "Strategic Structures". The sounds range from other-worldly, foreboding resonant tones, to angelic, celestial timbres. These spontaneous compositions were created and performed live, with no overdubs, late one night in 1989 at Rauschenberg's beach house on Captiva Island, Florida. It was a magical night, an inspired collaboration, in an exhilarating setting. The sculptures themselves were a collaborative artwork created by Stohl and Epple, with renowned visual artists, Lawrence Voytek and Rauschenberg. Printed inner sleeve with liner notes by Kat Epple. "The structures are constructed utilizing a variety of metals, including aluminum, bell-grade brass, steel, and both elemental and Alpha/Beta weapons-grade titanium, using an 8000-degree arc welding torch with high frequency current at 440 volts and 310 amps." --Kat Epple in the original liner notes.

GRUPO CONTROLE DIGITAL A Festa E Nossa LP
Soundway presents a reissue of Brazilian duo Grupo Controle Digital's only album, A Festa É Nossa, originally released in 1988. The title track "A Festa É Nossa" having circulated in DJ sets of influential tastemakers, the album has become highly sought after by electronic fans and collectors alike. Lo-fi synths and cruising bass lines permeate the record, influenced by the group's Brazilian contemporaries at the time such as Tim Maia, Cláudio Zoli, Secos E Molhados, and rock outfit Made In Brazil. Band members Billy Jaguar and Gel Valiery regularly performed in various groups in São Paulo throughout the '80s and '90s, but after Gel passed away, Grupo Controle Digital was no more -- the band and the album faded into obscurity and Billy became a priest, working with gospel music. It remained that way until Brazilian DJ Millos Kaiser (from label Selva Discos, and one half of Brazilian street party organizers Selvagem) tracked down the remaining member of the group to be able to include one of their tracks on the highly anticipated Soundway compilation, Onda De Amor: Synthesized Brazilian Hits That Never Were (1984-94) (SNDW 125CD/LP, 2018). Audio restored by Neal Birnie. Artwork restored by Lewis Heriz. Remastered by Frank Merritt at The Carvery, London. Tip-on heavyweight sleeve.

WINDOPEN Rock! LP
Spittle present a reissue of Windopen's Rock!, originally issued in 1979. Windopen were a proudly underground band from Bologna. Active between the '70s and the '80s, they only recorded a cassette (the original presentation of this music) on Harpo's Music and a single, Sei In Banana Dura (1980) for Cramps Records. At the exact edge between masterpiece and madness, here is the first-ever vinyl reissue of that original cassette, released on 1979 plus two unreleased tracks and tracks from Sei In Banana Dura. A classic item from the golden era of Italian New Wave, this music is the perfect mixture of punk spirit, urban slang lyrics and pure nonsense. "Sei In Banana Dura" was a really big underground hit! In the 1990s, band member Roberto Terzani took Giovanni Maroccolo's place in Litfiba and eventually he followed Piero Pelù in his solo career.

LOTUS EATERS (LUCY & RROSE), THE Desatura 2LP
Double LP version. 140 gram vinyl; includes download code. Lucy and Rrose, now coming together as The Lotus Eaters, have established themselves separately as techno artists who are just as comfortable operating in the uncharted area of experimental music. Running their own labels (Stroboscopic Artefacts and Eaux, respectively), they have gained a cult following, both influencing and challenging the direction of techno. Their first collaboration took the form of mutual remixes. Lucy remixed Rrose, taking on his modern classic "Waterfall" while Rrose remixed Dadub for Stroboscopic Artefacts, and shortly thereafter contributed an extended EP as part of Stroboscopic Artefacts's Monad series. Eventually, the idea of working together became inevitable. Several intense sessions in Lucy's Berlin studio followed, using mainly analog hardware. These sessions gave birth to a new project, starting with two EPs signed Lucy and Rrose, called The Lotus Eaters (SA 028EP, 2016) and The Lotus Eaters II (2018). With the Desatura album, the first release signed under the project name The Lotus Eaters, their common work is refined further, also becoming a live act which will debut at ADE (Amsterdam) 2018. With Desatura, Lucy and Rrose explore themes of physical density, emptiness, and space, creating sonic objects which can be rotated and viewed from multiple perspectives. Eschewing the typical instrumentation of techno, the duo uses synthesized sound and feedback as fundamental sources to generate both textural and percussive elements. A sense of tension and weight emerge from sources that cannot be easily pinpointed. The resulting album forms a complex narrative from a paradoxically simple and restrained set of sound sources. A mysterious and profound accomplishment.

KOSMOSE First Time Out 2CD
Something undoubtedly cosmic but with a DIY, home-made edge: a cosmos for sure, but dirtier than clean, noisier than technology-based. All songs are unreleased. Recorded and mixed in March 1975. After some years rather cosmic and raga-esque music, Kosmose slowly began to explore some more experimental and noisy sonic expression. At the time, the band only owned a few instruments and sound effects and, no drummer. They used to play long tracks in order to follow the trend of the alternative music of the period -- remember, this was 1975. The event was a total spectacle with an inventive light-show including a stroboscope and a frantic projection of strange abstract slides on a giant screen by Freddy Pourcel. Some incense was burnt time-to-time. Personnel: Alain Neffe - monophonic synthesizer, flute, primitive rhythm box, bell, clumsy voice, tarang; Francis Pourcel - bass, bass with violin bow, electric guitar; Daniel Malempré (aka MAL) - electric guitar, 12-string acoustic guitar.

BOOK OF AIR Se (in) de bos LP
LP version; printed inner sleeve. Se (in) de bos is a slow-paced 60 minute piece performed by Vvolk and composed by Stijn Cools. While getting deeper in the sound of Vvolk, the perception of time fades. It is astonishing how improvised music can create such a timeless, and calming experience for the listener. This is the third album in the Book Of Air series, as part of the Granvat platform curated by the brothers Stijn and Bert Cools. As in the first Book Of Air album Fieldtone (SR 412LP, 2015) and the second, Vvolk (SR 413CD/LP, 2016), the parameters of time and sound are again widely present. This time the three interwoven bass lines give the deep drive and foundation of the sound, completed with a layer of acoustic instruments and sparkling chords on top. Se (in) de bos is inspired by the fluctuation objectivity of our daily observations. Vvolk investigates performing and improvising music, in close relation to present time: what are the possibilities in playing music, when changes in this music pass by unnoticed? How do we as musicians relate to the running time of a performance? This clearly challenges the improvising musicians, and makes audience and performers discover new territories in collective improvisation. Book Of Air/Vvolk is known for its "whole night laying down" concert, and is one of the only acoustic ambient orchestras in the world.

ACEZANTEZ Acezantez LP
On the evidence on Acezantez, Acezantez, founded by the versatile Croatian composer and instrumentalist Dubravko Detoni, merit wider recognition. Acezantez is a contemporary Croatian masterpiece. Originally released in 1977, the album is comprised of rich textural pieces constructed from an unnotatable, intricate interplay of percussive squeals, scrapes and rattles, parched and pitchless woodwinds, and dislocated keyboards, with stylistic affinities with early Nurse With Wound. This Detoni (born February 22, 1937) release was the first since his LP on the Phillips Prospective series, which in the 1970s was the most credible house for innovative compositional names such as Xenakis and Pierre Henry, opening the doors for much avant-garde musical invention. Where atonality is to the fore in much avant-garde music, Detoni's sense of abrasion is met with bouts of melodic intervention. Elsewhere, heavy industrial sounds are used as percussive texture; mixed with forceful electronics and dramatic instrumental passages, they create a complex and textured series of compositions.

VA To Catch a Ghost: Field Recordings from Madagascar LP
This is Sublime Frequencies' second volume of transcendent musical field recordings from central and southern Madagascar, produced by Charles Brooks. Like the grand beauty and wonder of its flora and fauna, Madagascar's music is completely unique. Whether the tempos are fast with polyrhythmic precision or slow in the form of a Kabosy ballad, once one gets familiar with its sound, it can never be mistaken again. Charles Brooks has been traveling to Madagascar and living with these spectacular artists for many years and has managed to document countless examples of their work, and regardless of how formal or informal a recording is made, the results always turn out magical. The following is an excerpt from Brooks's liner notes: "The musicians on this album are storytellers and much of their craft is improvised and has a strong foundation of expertise in their respective cultural traditions. These field recordings have been collaborative from beginning to end and here, I've attempted to represent the finest of these talented artists. Their music journeys across endless landscapes with some movements having the qualities of a start and finish and yet no apparent end... Seeking, recording, and sharing the intangible experience, the best of all of this, is to catch a ghost." Charles G Brooks, 2018 Limited edition LP with two-sided insert featuring images of the artist and highly detailed notes of the recording sessions. Performers include: Kavoria Lappella, Soa Vinelo Soando, Vonarivo M'Bola, Gilbert Peramena dit Bera, Zara Jean Paul, Randriana Solo, Mahalid Destin, M'Beamdala, Prosper Razafimamdimby, Melina Soulala, Dabaro and Ranasoa Velonjoha.

BHATTACHARYA, DEBEN Paris to Calcutta: Men and Music on the Desert Road 4CD/BOOK
Deben Bhattacharya (1921-2001) was a field recordist, poet, filmmaker, musicologist, and amateur ethnomusicologist, based in Calcutta and Paris. Highly influential, it would not be too bold a stretch to say that his work shaped how we listen to the world: he produced a vast number of LPs, CDs, videos, and radio shows of traditional music from India, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe from 1953 until his death in 2001. Never before published, Paris to Calcutta: Men and Music on the Desert Road features over four hours of music and is Deben's impressionistic account of a 1955 journey overland, in a converted milk delivery van, from France to India collecting and exploring music along the Desert Road from Europe into India. With four CDs of recordings, photographs, Deben's original recording notes, musical transcriptions, and more. An amazing glimpse into a time long gone and essential listening for anyone interested in folk and world music traditions. Produced and edited by Robert Millis (Indian Talking Machine (2015) and Victrola Favorites (DTD 011CD, 2009). "Actually, I think my playing is probably more derived from the folk music records that I heard; Middle Eastern music, Indian music... for years I had something called Music On The Desert Road, which was an album with all kinds of different ethnic music. I used to listen to that all the time." --Frank Zappa, 1993 (from an interview in Guitarist Magazine, talking about an LP released by Deben in 1956 using a few edited versions of the music included on this compilation.) 160 pages, cloth bound cover with four CDs: 45 pages of photographs and 50 pages of detailed recording notes. Introductions by Jharna Bose Bhattacharya, Robert Millis and WG Archer.Includes recordings of: Students of the Salonica Quaker Girl's School Dance of Jerissos,Saban Akdao, Hasan Sayin, Reza Argin, Jumma Ali, Vakkas Kaplan, Feizi Kaplan, Hüseyin Ero?lu, Raif Karsligil, Imam and congregation of the mosque at Kilis, Dervish worshippers in the house of Sheikh Saud Mawlawi, Nour Hanbali, Antone Noweh, Doureid Laham, Bashraf Sama'i Taatyus, Andalusi Muwashshah, Hazim, Suleiman and friends, Al-Haj Hashim Mohammad, Shu'aib Ibrahim, Abdul-KArim Al Azawi, Shu'aib Ibrahim, Khalil Akrawi, Ostad Zareen Panje Bel, Gulfa-e-Ghani and Zareef, Ostad Abol-Hassan Saba, Sher Khoda, Darioosh Sefvat, Hamedanian, Shapoore Delshadi, Eskandare Ebrahimi and Orchestra, Eskandare Ebrahimi , Muhammad Hussein, Dost Muhammad, Abdul Kader, Saroj Narang, Jyotish CH. BABA COMMANDANT AND THE MANDINGO BAND Siri Ba Kele CD
Baba Commandant And The Mandingo Band return with their second album, Siri Ba Kele. After the Afro-beat fury of their first album Juguya (2015), the band has now distilled a potent mix of traditional and modern Burkinabe funk with a reverent take on the iconic Mandingue guitar music of the 1970's. Mamadou Sanou (Baba Commandant) leads the band with a confidence earned from years of toiling in the DIY underground of the West African music scene. His riveting growl and main instrument, the doso n'goni, still strike with a profound delivery. The band's guitarist, Issouf Diabate, is on board again and his breathtaking guitar work is one of the greatest examples of the instrument displayed in modern times. Massibo Taragna (bass) and Mohamed Sana (drums) are simply one of the finest rhythm sections working today, each a master on his instrument and the chops displayed here are truly something to behold. The band has become an interlocking five-headed hydra of complex funk and cosmic guitar explosions. Recorded in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in February 2018 by Camille Louvel and mixed with SF's Hisham Mayet, the Mandingo Band's sophomore LP is a modern statement of searing Sahelian compositions. It stands shoulder-to-shoulder with such classics as Super Biton De Segou (1977), Kanaga De Mopti (1977), Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux (1981) and the mighty Rail Band.

SENYAWA Sujud CD
Senyawa are a contemporary duo originating from Jogjakarta, Indonesia. Rully Shabara (extreme vocals) coupled with Wukir Suryadi's deft instrumentals (and homemade instruments) produce one of the most profound examples of experimental via traditional music happening anywhere today. By weaving Indonesian folkloric moods with various shades of modern genre hybrids, Senyawa has been navigating unexplored musical terrain for more than a decade. Sujud, their premier release on the Sublime Frequencies label, is the latest chapter of this very special and singular sound of the past, present, and future. The basic theme of the record can be summed up with one extremely powerful Bahasa Indonesian word, "tanah", which translates to "soil-ground-land-earth". Shabara's vocals are an expressive force, conjuring spirits from the soil with a deep humility and respect for the land and their existence in the universe. Suryadi has built a new guitar for these tracks and pushes the Senyawa sound into new territory, utilizing delay, loops, and other effects creating grounded backdrops of folk metal, punk attitudinal, and droning earthscapes - providing Shabara the perfect context to explore his whispering poetry and jagged, sharp-as-a-kris animistic powers. There is simply no other sound like it and Sublime Frequencies is thrilled to present this new direction in their discography. Limited CD version includes liner notes, in gatefold digital wallet.

VELVET UNDERGROUND, THE New York Rehearsal 1966 CD
"Perhaps the only band in Rock N' Roll history to come almost fully formed, despite many claims to the contrary, The Velvet Underground's meeting with Andy Warhol in 1965 just about sealed their fate. Straight into Warhol's Factory base in early '66, where rehearsals for their pending debut record soon took place, somehow Andy managed to persuade a local NYC radio station to broadcast live during the best of these sessions, and while few hearing this transmission would have had much of a clue as to what was going down, this recording is now a legendary piece of musical history that every fan of the extraordinary VU will want to hear. Providing a sense of quite how the seismic Velvets' debut album of 1967 came to be, this recording is now available on CD for the first time. Also included are three rare live cuts recorded at New York's Cinematheque earlier the same year."

Even before starting the TAL label it was a dream resuscitating this little-known gem of early '80s mutant funk from Düsseldorf's machine music legacy. Originally issued in 1981 as part of the rare Massa compilation, for many years this EP has existed as a rumor only, a phantom like contemporary post-punk acts such as Liaisons Dangereuses or CHBB. These distinctly characteristic recordings have up until today remained the only vinyl outing under the Roter Stern Belgrad name. Using mostly a Roland rhythm machine and analog sequencer modules, the results blend with field recordings to maximum effect.

KJELLVANDER, CHRISTIAN Wild Hxmans CD
"In days like these, dominated by dark clouds of marginalization and isolationism, an artist like Christian Kjellvander is absolutely critical to our spiritual salvation. The Swedish singer-songwriter embraces the unknown and seeks out the most profound sense of humanity. Take the title of his ninth album, Wild Hxmans; something is different, disconcertingly so. Kjellvander slips us an X for a U. He forces us to think, sets our senses on edge. We cast our vote with an X, but we also use it to blot out a mistake. 'Cross it out and forget about it? If this is how people treat each other, then we have a problem', Kjellvander suggests. Through seven songs drawing upon folk, blues, Americana and free jazz, the 42-yearold speaks to us of farewells and departures, of escape and the sensation of arriving in a new world. In doing so, he crafts a sound which breathes peacefully, pulsating as he surges headlong from intimacy into deep, oppressive darkness. At times it seems as if his music disappears, only to resurface with a flash moments later. Kjellvander is an empathetic vagabond, a daydreaming desperado. On 'Strangers In Northeim' he ushers something new and untamed into a perfect little town. 'Faux Guernica' is based on a road trip through the Basque country with his youngest son. 'Curtain Maker' is inspired by an encounter in Verona with a woman from Syria; it articulates the unbearable silence which follows a separation. Could a musician face a more paradoxical challenge than creating sound to express this eternal silence? These multifaceted songs are carried by Kjellvander's wondrous voice, with echoes of Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, and David Sylvian. A voice so brittle in the presence of pain shines even brighter in the coruscating conviction that emotions routinely concealed in everyday life will rise up to the surface. On Wild Hxmans, Christian Kjellvander faces up to the unknown and uses it in his art, saying, 'I often find myself in situations or places I haven't got a clue about. So I learn and then I write.'" --Birgit Reuther

BOOFY In My Head EP 12"
Boofy hails from Bristol's fine heritage of progressive bass music producers. He's made a name for himself as part of the Bandulu crew and his own Sector 7 Sounds imprint. "Back In The Box" sets the pace with swinging hats, thumping kicks, and a bass line that sounds like an earthquake. "Herbie" takes things in dissonant direction, before dropping hard and with authority. The title track is an exploration around the paranoid edges of a creative mind, stretched to capacity. "Perfunktion" has a rolling rhythm with a lighter mood, somewhat reminiscent of Mala circa 2006.

BLUE ORCHIDS Righteous Harmony Fist CD
Martin Bramah and his Blue Orchids bandmates have never been prolific, with albums appearing sparingly. Righteous Harmony Fist is a surprise on the heels of The Once And Future Thing (2015) and Factory Star's Enter Castle Perilous (2011); they'll soon return to the studio to record yet another. However those songs may or may not look back, the present and future beckon. "If They Ever Lay A Finger On Us", a rare cover originally written by Manchester combo Bingo Harry, whose debut album will arrive in coming months, is a hymn for the righteous weary set in an age of turmoil, whereas "Deep State" turns modern political paranoia on its heels, with its comparison of flawed societal thinking to a highly troubled kid: "Tiny said 'the Earth is flat'/Hit his teacher with a cricket bat/Now he hides in the woods and eats his meat raw/While teacher sucks her soup through a drinking straw." "Beached" is a classic paranoid rant in the style of "Work"; built-up aggression and intensity, a joyous purge in the light of doom, and no Blue Orchids record would be complete without a sort of saga, in this case the mysterious "Lancelot's Last Word". The highlights of the album may be "The Lad That Time Forgot", which latches The Greatest Hit (Money Mountain) (1982)'s melancholy to more assured backing, or "Incandescent Artillery", a soaring anthem built around John Paul Moran's organ line. Blue Orchids was formed by Martin Bramah and Una Baines, both past members of The Fall.

NIGHTINGALES Perish The Thought CD
It's unusual for an act to hit its peak after four decades; yet Perish The Thought is evidence to the contrary. The Nightingales have notoriously had a new label for each new album, a fact which might reasonably call for consumer caution, but they don't fit in with anything like a scene, they speak their own musical language, and while they bust out slogans about being "slightly superior to others of their ilk", the truth is, they have no ilk. Faust's Hans-Joachim Irmler adds keyboards and The Lovely Eggs's Holly Blackwell's languid voice features on one song. John Peel noted, "their performances will serve to confirm their excellence when we are far enough distanced from the 1980s to look at the period rationally and other, infinitely better known, bands stand revealed as charlatans". It's doubtful he would have bothered with such a pre-emptive defense if he'd been able to witness the explosive growth of the band during their second incarnation. The Nightingales were formed by vocalist Robert Lloyd, formerly of The Prefects (part of The Clash's "White Riot Tour," John Peel favorites, etc.), and feature Andreas Schmid on bass, former Violet Violet drummer Fliss Kitson, and original Prefect Alan Apperley on guitar. Specially commissioned artwork by the David Yates.

Pat Thomas, with his background in free jazz and improv, and Susumu Mukai, more commonly heard in the company of Floating Points, make strange bedfellows with Alexis Taylor's mooger-foogered rhodes, but somehow it all crystallizes perfectly. LEAP, THE The Leap EP 12"
The Leap is the new project of Dutch producers Tripeo and Doka. "Shock Doctrine" is a slow-building yet powerful piece of gloomy, hypnotic techno, followed by the exceptionally deep and undulating "Borrowed Time" that combines soft atmospheric textures with distinct fragile melodies. The duo showcases once again seamless production skills and with "Green Capital" they set a nostalgic mood, a trancey journey filled with crisp hi-hats and snares. The mind-bending closing track "Sustainable Communities" creates dancefloor tension with its piercing metallic synth lines.

SHIRE, DAVID The Conversation - The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack LP
Trunk presents a special, first-time, issue of David Shire's soundtrack for The Conversation (1974). This is the first time the complete score to The Conversation has been released on vinyl. The film itself was originally released in 1974 but until now nothing else has ever been pressed on vinyl. Jonny Trunk's obsession with this music began after he'd caught the film, late night, sometime in the mid-1990s. Musically it's an exceptional example of the "new minimalism" in film music of the period, marking a departure (for some) from big scores to smaller, more economic ensemble sounds. The film was written, produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola and is a thrilling journey into sound, mind and murder. Heavily influenced by Antonioni's Blow-Up (1966) Coppola wanted to fuse the concept of Blow-Up with "the world of audio surveillance". The story centers around Harry Caul (Gene Hackman), a professional wire-tapper and clandestine bugger consumed by a conversation he's been paid to record. Caul is a loner, an obsessive-compulsive character with numerous neuroses that play out brilliantly throughout the film. And as he slowly pieces together the conversation fragments and forms his own story around it, his world falls apart. For the music, Coppola wisely chose a young David Shire, his brother-in-law. Shire's deceptively simple piano theme is one of tragic beauty, capturing Caul's loneliness, his disturbed nature and this trip into darkness. The melody has both sweet and sour tones, feeling a little like a slow ragtime, developing throughout the film; there are even trips into avant-garde territory with electro-acoustic flourishes and Concrète. The agitated figure of Caul, wearing his distinctive transparent mac, is made all the more raw and poignant by the score, its sparse and curiously emotional compositions unlike any others from the period. The soundtrack for The Conversation proved to be a major break for Shire, his career taking off from this point. His next score was to classic Taking Of Pelham 123, followed up ironically by All The Presidents Men - a thriller about the Watergate scandal. The Conversation won several awards and nominations, and has become a classic of the "New Hollywood" movement. Personnel: Jack Nimitz - baritone sax; Ray Brown - bass; Shelly Manne - drums; Walter Murch - sound montage; Norman Wachner - engineer; Pete Jolly - piano; David Shire - piano; Clark Spangler - ARP 2600; Don Menza - tenor sax; Conte Condoli - trumpet.

TIGA & THE MARTINEZ BROTHERS Blessed EP Part 1 12"/PIC DISC
Turbo Recordings presents the feel-good story of the year with the debut from Tiga & The Martinez Brothers. "This is a labor of love," says Tiga. "Two of the most refreshingly positive figures in dance music teaming with me, the heartless cynic with a heart of gold. Positivity and actual quality: the best of both worlds." Tiga was meant to produce tracks for the DJ duo, but the sessions evolved into fullfledged collaboration. The three men manned the studio in psychic unison, laying real-time drum programming and minimal storytelling over a techno foundation to create a truly dynamic dynamic.

RATTLE Sequence LP
LP version; 180 gram vinyl; edition of 500. Rattle's Sequence is released by Upset The Rhythm. Rattle is an ongoing musical project concerned with experiments in rhythm, meter and tension. Katharine Eira Brown and Theresa Wrigley make up the duo from Nottingham, who with just drums and occasional vocals weave an expanse of percussive vortices. Their songs swirl and envelop with all the physicality and drama of another world pulling together around its own shifting center of gravity. The drum beats phase and sidestep, they trade accents and overlap, providing a suitably alive terrain for the vocals to explore similar tendencies of pattern. Rattle's debut album (UTR 082CD/LP) was released in 2016 through Upset The Rhythm / I Own You and was greeted with much critical praise, this often singled out their hypnotic minimalism and ecstatic regard for the dance floor. Sequence was written in much the same way as their debut, with the duo facing each other over their shared palette of drums, allowing songs to develop naturally and suggest their own direction. However, Brown and Wrigley were more confident of what they wanted to achieve with this follow up, having already proven the concept watertight through their debut and subsequent concerts. They knew they could wrestle songs out of the silence with such a setup, so afforded themselves greater time to explore extended, long-form composition. Sequence is composed of four tracks, each clocking in around 10 minutes or over and focused squarely on a deeper resonance with the creative act, illustrative of how ideas build from scratch, of how music can grow out of repetition. Recorded at JT Soar in Nottingham with Phil Booth and Mark Spivey (Rattle's live sound engineer), the album developed out of these points, with Rattle honing their sound. Everything was stripped back to just the drums and Brown's voice. Percussion flourishes were deemed unnecessary, overdubbed layers of vocals were kept to a minimum. As a result, this quartet of songs are more meditative and aware than previous efforts, with the duo's attentions spent tapping into each track's potential, mapping out expeditions in tempo and making much of the journey over destination this is complemented further through the production of Mark Spivey, capturing Rattle's huge live sound on tape for this album with its incurred dub-delay trippiness, taming and melding. Sequence is a liminal album, thoughtfully crafted with themes of transition and realization at its heart.

GUTTERSNIPE My Mother The Vent LP
"My Mother The Vent is the eagerly-awaited debut from Guttersnipe, the UK's most out-there band. They say the PR era, circa the late 1980s, killed the golden age of music journalism, they say Guttersnipe have continuously melted all the forms that they come up against; they are right. Because Guttersnipe is not part of a tradition we know well, but one will identify the departure from that tradition immediately upon hearing My Mother The Vent. The innovation here is a firm commitment to the flow-motive polyrhythm undergirding the seared, nay fried, tonal rainbow and de-reasoned vocals. Not Nate Nelson, nor John the masseuse dude from Sightings but Tipula Confusa. Uroceras Gigas has bridged so many gaps, finally unlocked the axe-wielding code and is really playing the thing, bringing forth a world-view that is utterly unique. There is some real disjunction in the music, clear and intended. In an age when most computer music composers use stochastic systems and still manage to drop some linear path/ground shit, the brawler drums and slanky guitar constructions on My Mother The Vent are a genuine treat. I've spent too much of my adult life so far hearing too much of this shit to not recognize real game; here it crawls out of the grey shadows of ol' Blighty. I'm not waxing confusingly in a rarefied tone here, nor running the boring sci-fi script. We left the human-music-on-a-human-scale behind, much to our detriment. Here we sit in our crumbling reality, but Guttersnipe come paleo, like the rhapsodes with long-ass memories rattling off Homeric verse well into the age of manuscript culture, but here, with future tones, luckily. Otherwise, me and the record label here wouldn't be wasting our time and yours with a one-sheet for My Mother The Vent. A proper first time on wax for these amazing creatures is a welcome addition to the world of things. These drums and these guitar lines are so cranké, as they say here in my odd neighborhood. These voices are so utterly expressive without even the damn language at hand, like the great horns. We'll rinse this record out, I'll put on my old Blighty nighty and go dance in the street." --Alex Moskos, Montreal, August 2018. Guttersnipe is: Uroceras Gigas - Guitar, Analog Synth, Vox Tipula Confusa - Drums, Drum Synth, Vox. 180 gram vinyl, edition of 500.

AFSKY Sorg CD
The side project of Solbrud guitarist/vocalist Ole Pedersen Luk, Afsky makes a big impression on its debut LP, Sorg. Afsky covers a lot of ground and treads the line between traditional black metal, atmospheric black metal, and depressive black metal, with some additional influences seeping in to provide some subtle nuances. It sometimes has that abrasive second-wave tonality and riffing that wouldn't sound out of place on a Taake record, while on the other hand it alternates between icy assaults and slower atmospheric/depressive sections that have a lot of depth to offer listeners. It's a strong first showing for this new Danish black metal project.

SERF & THE VILLAINS, VIC Rok Y Roll LP
War Extension announces the vinyl re-issue of Rok Y Roll by Vic Serf & The Villains, originally released by It's War Boys on cassette in 1982. Musicians on the album comprised Vic Serf (alias of Jim "Amos" Welton), Cathy Spermwrecker, Rita Chulo, and Larry O'Houlihan, along with guest appearances from Ron Dealo, Lepke B., and Sara Fancy. The recording is situated in a particularly fervent and inventive period of 1980s independent and experimental music-making, in which musicians moved freely between such bands as Milk From Cheltenham, Tesco Bombers, and Raincoats, and record labels such as Rough Trade, Y Records, and Barcelona's UMYU. This album, however, was more part of a rampant recording program by Welton in which he released, with help from many collaborators, an irrepressible number of bands and their albums, such as by the Just Measurers, Milk From Cheltenham, and Amos and Sara, as well as Vic Serf & The Villains. Rok Y Roll imagines an alien race based on a planet far away who have received radio signals beamed from earth in the '50s: rock and roll music. They assume that these signals are the language of the earth people and, inspired to communicate, concoct a suitable reply. Unfortunately, their culture has no concept of music or song and, as a consequence, their replies are somewhat skewed; Rok Y Roll is the result. The music, recorded mostly on lo-fi tape machines, and borrowed four-track cassette machines, found its locus in the various squats and derelict mansions that defined a now long-ago London. Important to this was the ever-present involvement of non-musicians and the untutored approaches and altered techniques they employed. Rejecting the wannabe naked careerism of 80's pop, the scene around It's War Boys's aim was, as Susan B. Smoothe said, "nothing less than to turn the whole rotting wriggling carapace of music on its back and carefully prod each segment with a perceptually sharpened stick." The question remains, was Rok Y Roll a mining of past forms of inverted science fiction, in which chronologically displaced music functioned as an alien artifact? Or, was it an all-out attack on popular musical forms? Primarily, Rok Y Roll could be read as a celebration of utter naffness. Vic Serf and his collaborators asked the question, "How atrocious could a music and the idea behind it be? What would result?" Here you have the answer! Edition of 300.

NEGRO, JOEY Remixed With Love by Joey Negro Vol. Three 2CD
Classic disco reworked from original multi-track tapes, Joey Negro's Remixed With Love Volume 3 is the latest edition of what has become the industry-leading disco remix series. No one knows this era of music better than Dave Lee, who under his Joey Negro alias once again turns his impeccable hand to some of the best-loved records ever committed to wax. Lee says, "I can clearly remember in the 1980s having fantasies about being a remixer and dreaming of tweaking my favorite songs and re-releasing them. I really never thought it would happen. The days when I receive the parts for some of these classic recordings are literally a dream come true." Remixed With Love Volume 3 has been a real labor of love, and a release several years in the making. With original parts for some of these classics hard to find, and with major labels rightly protective of songs created by legendary artists, it is a testament to both the perseverance of Lee and the esteem in which he is held as a remixer that the project was ever completed. Lee has put his own inimitable spin on more than a dozen seminal records, with The Fatback Band, Patti LaBelle, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Odyssey and many more vying for attention across a stunning three-part gatefold double vinyl/double CD release. As one would expect from an artist of Lee's caliber, he's taken the task extremely seriously. There are few producers with either the confident or ability to take on records of this heritage, but Lee has once again proved that when it comes to sensitive re-workings of disco staples, he's in a league of his own. All the remixes here are new and exclusive to the compilation, making Remixed With Love Volume 3 an essential purchase for any disco devotee. Also features: Ashford & Simpson, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Earth, Wind & Fire, Eddie Kendricks, Brenda Russell, L.T.D., Michael Wycoff, Gwen McCrae, Samuel Jonathan Johnson, Mass Production, Lonnie Liston Smith, Mtume, Glenn Jones, Slave, Venus Dodson, Booker T., Patrice Rushen, and Deniece Williams.
