VA ANSIA003 12"
The latest episode on Piezo's no nonsense, hand-stamped, and heart-warmed Ansia label. StabUdown Productions (James Donadio, aka Prostitutes) kicks it off with "FyeRRR!", a deadly burst of blown out ragga replete with an arsenal of kicks and vocal cut up shrapnel. Piezo drops "OiOiOi", a masterwork of electro-gated basslines, jungle breaks, and absurd delay feedbacks. Kreggo delivers "Ligeti", a flat-out mover with its skittering percussion and deep haunted stabs hovering around the supernatural subs. Bristol's Facta offers "Not Now", an elastic, low gravity heavy-hitter that snakes through bass bins and wraps you up.

MALONE, KALI Organ Dirges 2016-2017 LP
Unique, engrossing room recordings of Kaliff pipe organ dirges played by composer, sound technician, and multi-instrumentalist Kali Malone, released in early 2018 on a super limited tape run and now finally pressed up on vinyl for wider public consumption. Very little in 2018 is as elusive or magical as this record. In four pieces recorded at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, it's the characteristics of the room itself that add a crucial dimension to these pieces, sounding worlds away from the cavernous reverb associated with church acoustics. Instead, these dry recordings bring out all the fragile warmth and intimacy that's rarely associated with this multi-faceted, sacred instrument. Removed from its traditional, godly environment -- the effect is startling. The magick also lies in Kali's capacity to produce rich, swirling, gaseous overtones. There's a preternatural sensitivity toward these peripheral sounds, coaxing intoxicating spectrums of quivering hi-register fluctuations and sonorous bass at a pace that draws the listener in and seems to reduce everything around to a meditative serenity. Organ Dirges stands in a line of records borne out of serendipity rather than any planned, grandiose gesture. Recorded more or less off the cuff over just a few days onto a portable zoom, it's a testament to Kali's compositional instinct that these four pieces sound so resolved and purposeful. Every small detail sounds intentional without being controlled, right down to the almost unbearably moving disintegration at the very end of closing piece "Fifth Worship", like a slow descent into darkness. It's interesting to note that Organ Dirges was first played at a huge iron mine, the acoustics once again altering the perception of these alchemical pieces. There's a contrasting experience when you play this record in different spaces -- on headphones, quietly at night in small rooms, loud on monitors in large spaces -- always revealing something new, always transporting you somewhere else. Mastered at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

SOLARIZE Nachtwerk (1991-1998) LP
LP version. Bureau B issues Solarize's compilation Nachtwerk (1991-1998). Since 1981 Wilfried Franzen and Thomas Grötz have been developing their own version of experimental pop music, which oscillates between song structures, noise, and psychedelic trance. Bass and keyboards form the instrumental substructure of the duo's compositions, which are enriched with guitars, violin, piano, electronic percussions, and samples. After self-publishing various cassettes and cds, Nachtwerk (1991-1998) is their first official release, presenting selected pieces from the years 1991 to 1998. The two school friends started their musical collaboration in Papenburg in northwestern Germany. A self-empowerment related to punk and post-punk served as a catalyst and encouraged them to develop their own musical cosmos. "We did not seek for a solid stylistic concept. Occasionally we used various genres and musical trends as inspiration. The typical result was not easily identifiable as new wave, trance, intelligent dance music, Krautrock, and so on." A special approach to music, characterized by a non-musical perspective i.e. the visual arts, has played an important role. This is almost inevitably a result of their subsidiary activities, working and articulating as visual artists and art historians. Their creations made of sound emerged during their multi-day retreats were almost never played again afterwards. "Everything that we got our hands on served as an instrument, no matter whether we were able to play it or not, as long as it matched our musical visions. The outcome was documented with simple tape recorders and later with four-track devices." In this way, Solarize produced more than 250 songs and instrumentals over a period of almost 20 years. Nachtwerk (1991-1998) brings together everything that makes up the unspecified stylistic, yet consistent approach of Solarize: bright and sunny melodies, creaky violin and e-bow trips, seriously fiddled compositions, polyrhythmic dense ambient landscapes, teaspoon-samples with interview sections, and dramatic piano excursions.

MARTELLOTTA, MASSIMO One Man Session Vol. 4: Underwater LP
The five-volume project by the guitarist/founder of Calibro 35 continues. Massimo Martellotta, after having dedicated himself to the synths, the prepared piano (CNMM 002LP, 2018), and the symphonic orchestrations (CNMM 003LP, 2018), address the fourth chapter of the One Man Sessions series to the guitar with minimal drum grooves and analog brushstrokes. The title Underwater immediately clarifies the dreamy atmosphere and surfacing the passion for soundtracks and library music with experimentation, accompanying the listener on an amniotic journey amid the feeling of abandonment and vigilance that it is when you dive.

2019 black vinyl repress. Heat is a surprise new double album from Shinichi Atobe for Demdike Stare. It follows on from 2017's From The Heart, It's A Start, A Work Of Art (DDS 023LP) and continues a run of highly enigmatic, acclaimed and completely unparalleled productions that follow their own timeless logic. There's no sonic fiction involved; this material really does just turn up on a CD sent by air mail from Japan to Manchester, sparse info, no messing, pure gold. What's that cover art about? It's probaby something to do with the balmy, slightly fucked, sun-stroked material within. "So Good, So Right", the ten-minute opener, will force you to forget about all the shit around you for a while. There are also several tracks called "Heat"; they're all killer. This music takes you elsewhere almost immediately; that fan on your desk is basically a summer breeze. In fact, this whole album is absurd, completely effortless, and a total classic. Find a more life-affirming electronic album in 2018, and there's an ice cream in the offing. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton, cover by Mat Thornton.

QUEBEC, IKE Blue & Sentimental LP

The result of a 1961 recording date featuring a superb quartet including guitarist Grant Green, bass man Paul Chambers, and master drummer Philly Joe Jones. Mood and atmosphere seem to be the key words for the most of Quebec's music, while Blue & Sentimental, as the title suggests, speak volumes about the smoky late-night feeling of the whole album. The sensuous voice of Quebec's tenor sax shine through a dense sequence of blues numbers and soulful ballads.

LOGOTHETIS, ANESTIS Hor!-Spiel / Nekrologlog 1961 / Fantasmata 1960 LP
The Greek avant-garde composer Anestis Logothetis was noted for his pioneering tape techniques as well as developing his own notation system for composition that incorporated visual symbols meant to be interpreted by the performers. "Hör!-spiel" / Nekrologlog 1961 / Fantasmata 1960 collects three of his most famous works, realized in Vienna where he spent much of the 1940s-1960s. After completing studies at the music academy there, in the 1950s Logothetis became enamored of 20th century composers like John Cage and Earle Brown, and moved away from traditional composition for orchestras and performers in favor of fully electronic composition in the late '50s. A groundbreaking composer and electronic musician, Logothetis has long been underappreciated by the world of avant-garde and electronic musicians but Fantôme Phonographique seeks to rectify that issue with this brilliant release.

POUSSEUR, HENRI Early Experimental Electronic Music 1954-1961 LP
Henri Pousseur was a Belgian composer, teacher, and music theorist active from the 1950s on, influenced by Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Luciano Berio. Pousseur may be lesser known than those contemporaries but his composition and technique is regarded by many as equaling, if not surpassing much of the work of those more famous names. Realized in the same Cologne radio studio as much of Stockhausen's most famous work, this collection brings together some of Pousseur's greatest work, early tape and electronic masterpieces that deserve the recognition afforded many of his more famous contemporaries.

LINDBLAD, RUNE Death Of The Moon & Other Early Works LP
Rune Lindblad was born in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1923 and began composing music in 1953. This was a time when composers in Germany and France were feuding over the merits of electronic music made by pure wave oscillators versus Musique concrète, which used the tape recorder as its main instrument. Lindblad, however did not see these genres as mutually exclusive. In fact, Lindblad extended his work to incorporate other mediums along with his approach to music. Deeply involved with woodcuts and painting, Lindblad was already experimenting with using damaged 16mm film in his Optica 1 as early as 1959. Not surprisingly, since Lindblad represented no institutionalized school of thought, his experiments went unnoticed for many years with the exception of his demonstration of Musique concrète in a concert at Folkets Hus in 1957 where the audience demanded their money back and the critics called his concert "pure torture". Until a retrospective published by Radium in 1989 there were only two recordings of Rune Lindblad's compositions; one was the single side of a 7" record released in 1957, the other a full length album published in 1975. Both of these recordings were poorly distributed and remain fairly unknown. Lindblad taught at Gothenburg University; among his students were Rolf Enstrom, Ake Parmerud, and Ulf Billing. The music on Death Of The Moon & Other Early Works has lain dormant for almost 35 years. It was recorded at a time when Lindblad was forced to borrow equipment from the University in Gothenburg in the evening and have it returned by sunrise the next morning. These compositions are essentially tape music, where individual performances are fed back and forth between tape recorders in a style represented by the technical limitations during this time period.

AHBEZ, EDEN Eden's Island: The Music Of An Enchanted Isle LP
Fantome Phonôgraphique presents a reissue of eden ahbez's Eden's Island: The Music Of An Enchanted Isle, originally issued in 1960. Though he was originally from Brooklyn and raised by adoptive parents in rural Kansas, George Alexander Aberle, aka eden ahbez, is about as California as they come. He was discovered in the 1940s while working in one of Los Angeles' earliest raw vegetarian restaurants and was known throughout the '50s and '60s for being spotted on the streets of L.A. in full white robe, sandals, and beard, and legendarily camping underneath the first L in the Hollywood sign. After writing numerous hits for jazz and pop singers, including the iconic "Nature Boy" made famous by Nat King Cole in 1948, ahbez (who spelled his name with lower case lettering because he deemed only God and Infinity worthy of capitalization) recorded his only long playing record, Eden's Island: The Music Of An Enchanted Isle in 1960. A combination of exotica arrangements and beat era poetry, the album sold poorly at the time but has since become regarded as an exotica classic that transcends the trappings of the genre. Absolutely essential L.A. weirdness from one of the original L.A. weirdos.

YOUNGS, RICHARD This Is Not A Lament 2CD
Return of Richard Youngs to Fourth Dimension, a label that has supported his work since the early 1990s via collaborations with Simon Wickham-Smith. The latter returns to this set, based around the notion of songs featuring special guests. Spread over the two discs, the eleven songs here assume all manner of sonic guises that are often difficult or sometimes blissed-out, but always rewarding. Most include guests, themselves from a wide variety of backgrounds (taking in all from groups such as Trembling Bells and Vibracathedral Orchestra to folk, bagpipe music, and abstract electronics), and are each named after a geographical location for reasons only the artists know. Spanning almost two hours, it not only once again illustrates precisely how prolific an artist Richard Youngs is, but it firmly compounds his place as one who can comfortably traverse everything from avant forms of songwriting to those even less charted spaces. As visionary as Robert Wyatt, he unwittingly exudes everything most perceive the very idea of English eccentricity as being. So-called "outsider" music rarely arrives so pronounced and at the same time so warm and inviting. Special guests include: Alasdair Roberts, Donald WG Lindsay, Neil Campbell, Sybren Renema, Alastair Galbraith, Reg Norris, Mick Elborado, Norifumi Shimogawa, Oren Ambarchi, and Simon Wickham-Smith.

JACKSON, JOE Mike's Murder LP
Joe Jackson finished the Night And Day tour in May 1983. He had been asked to contribute a song to Mike's Murder, a film written and directed by James Bridges. He ended up writing both a handful of songs and a few instrumental pieces that were released on a soundtrack album in September. Unfortunately, the film itself was not ready for release then, since it was the subject of a dispute between Bridges and the movie studio that had financed it, the result being re-shooting and reediting, such that the film did not open until March 1984, by which time it had a score by John Barry and only a little of Jackson's music remaining, and then it earned only one-million dollars during a few weeks of theatrical showings, making it a disastrous flop. The orphaned soundtrack album, however, managed to get into the Top 100 and even spawned a chart single in the Jackson composition "Memphis", while "Breakdown" earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

WARSAW An Ideal For Living - The Demos LP
Before there was Joy Division, there was Warsaw. The group was founded after a 1976 Sex Pistols gig, and the late great Ian Curtis joined the group soon after. By their first official gig, in 1977, they were already the talk of NME and a rush to sign and record led the group to RCA. Recording in Manchester's Arrow Studios in May 1978 brought a full album's worth of songs but the band ultimately didn't like the direction of the production and asked to be released from their contract. Here is that mythical unreleased album along with the earliest demos from the group, recorded in 1977. Essential stuff for any fan of UK post-punk.

CAT #: MAR 004LP
2019 repress. Mad About Records present a reissue of Toni Tornado's legendary funk soul album, from 1972. Toni Tornado is a black Rio masterpiece, reissued here for the first time on vinyl. Son of a Guyanese father and a Brazilian mother, at eleven years old Toni ran away from home and ended up in Rio, where he made a living selling peanuts and shining shoes. Tony began his artistic career in the 1960s with the stage name Tony Checker, lip-synching and dancing on Jair Taumaturgo's Hoje é dia de Rock. In the 1960s, he traveled to the United States, where he lived for five years in New York, serving as a drug dealer and pimp, whilst pretending to be an employee of a car wash. At that time, Tony met another Brazilian in the form of singer Tim Maia. Back in Brazil, he worked in the group of Ed Lincoln and also sang under the pseudonym Johnny Bradfort, the owner of the club forcing him to pretend to be a foreigner. In 1970, he adopted the name with which he came to be known, Tony Tornado. Influenced by James Brown, Tony was one of the artists who introduced soul music and funk into Brazilian music. Brown's in-your-face approach to racial pride resonated in the ghettos as well as the slums abroad. Many black people, all around the world, embraced the consciousness and music of the black power movement. Working-class black cariocas (residents of Rio) of Zona Norte began using the English phrases "black power", "brother", and "black is beautiful". They played soul records at their bailes (dances) and incorporated the lyrics and sounds into their music. Maia, the godfather of "música soul", spent five years in the United States, coming to know the sounds of black America intimately. When he returned to Brazil in 1964, Maia incorporated these influences into his songs. By the 1970s, other Brazilian musicians, such as Tony Tornado, Banda Black Rio, Cassiano, Gerson King Combo, Jorge Ben Jor, and Gilberto Gil had begun making soul records. This new music spoke to an experience both universal and unique at the same time. By the end of the 1970s, funk and disco would take over where soul left off, but it was the latter that helped to shape a generation of artists around a universal black identity. 1970s "paste-on" packaging and obi; Edition of 500.

La Vie Electonique Vol. 5 contains works from 1976 to 1977. 'Berlin Schönberg' was recorded in 1976 on a radio concert in Berlin. 'Vie de rêve' is from a concert from the same year, recorded in Reims in France. 'Nostalgic Echo' and 'Titanische Tage' are also solo concerts from 1976. One year later 'For Barry Graves' was recorded -- a short concert for the WDR-program 'Musik Extra 3'. 'The Oberhausen Tape' was recorded in 1976 (the second part of this concert is on La Vie Electronique Volume 6) 'The Poet' finally is a typical gem from the Moondawn era."

"Re-launch of the successful and partly out-of-print La Vie Electronique series by Klaus Schulze in a new digifile. MIG will gradually make the out-of-print volumes available again. CD 1, on the one hand, contains the second part of the Oberhausen-concert, with 'Schwanensee' on the other: two solo pieces which were recorded in 1976 in the studio in Hambühren. 'Fear at Madame Tussaud's' was recorded in April, 1977 in the London planetarium -- at that time a novelty, for it was the first time that a concert was held in a planetarium. 'Zeitgeist' is a concert which was recorded on October 17th, 1977 in front of 5500 people in the Saint Michael cathedral in Brussels, 'Inside The Harlequin' is the encore of this evening. The recording date of 'La Vie Secrète' cannot be exactly determined after all years any more. Recorded either in 1977/78 or 1975 this piece remains a very quiet, almost meditative jewel. In contrast to this stands 'Barracuda Drum', recorded about 1978 with Harald Grosskopf on drums. Last but not least at the end of the third CD we encounter the Klaus Schulze of 1979: In October and November that year Klaus Schulze was on tour with Arthur Brown ('Fire'). 'There was Greatness in the Room' is a fragment of the encore of concert from October, 29th 1979 in Brussels. The specific thing about this recording: Beside the voice of Arthur Brown the vocoder-voice of Klaus Schulze is also to be heard."

SCHULZE, KLAUS La Vie Electronique 8 3CD
"Re-launch of the successful and partly out-of-print La Vie Electronique series by Klaus Schulze in a new digifile. MIG will gradually make the out-of-print volumes available again. During the years 1977 to 1983 Klaus Schulze recorded some of his more introspective works. Albums like Mirage, Dune, and Dig It saw a significant change in his style of playing and his way of composing. While Schulze was quickly expanding his collection of synthesizers, that ultimately had its effect on the outlook of the music and the possibilities of performing that in a more exquisite way. Play a track like 'Synthasy' and notice that Schulze has come a long way since Timewind and Moondawn. On this 8th part of La Vie Electronique there's a selection of stuff that was archived beside his official albums in those years."

BROSELMASCHINE It Was 50 Years Ago Today 5CD/2DVD
"Bröselmaschine is one of the oldest bands from Germany and still alive! The reactions to their latest studio album (2017) were awesome by critics and fans. All over the world, especially in USA and Japan, the debut album from 1971 is listed as one of the most important Krautrock albums of all time - beneath Amon Düül, Can and Tangerine Dream (e.g. the New York Blog 'Pigeon & Planes' rank 9 of 20). On the occasion of their 50th anniversary MIG will release an anthology box set containing 5 CDs and two DVDs - a complete documentary of this unique band (1968 to 2017). An impressive 48 page booklet with extended liner notes and photos makes this release a special gem. The box set contains all studio albums including the iconic debut, carefully restored and digitally remastered. For the album I Feel Fine we got the original two inch multi-track tapes baked and digitalized; our proven sound engineer Hoppi made a contemporary mix, but for all that still ensouled by the ghosts of the '70s. The album Graublau (Greyblue) was digitally remastered from the original analogue 1/4inch master tape from 1984. It is fascinating and entertaining to follow this extraordinary band through the decades in different line-ups. On guitar: Willi Kissmer and Michael Dommers (previously Wallenstein) and, of cause mastermind Peter Bursch, who is also playing the sitar. Part of the band for many years are also exceptional German drummer Manni von Bohr, and on keyboards Helge Schneider. There are also Klaus Dapper on flutes and saxophone, Deltlef Wiederhöft on bass, the great Nippy Noya on percussions and many, many more."

"This is the music documentary of the making of Grammy®-nominated reggae album Revelation by dub reggae legend Lee 'Scratch' Perry. Perry continues to create unique, category-defying music, drawing his narrative from his spirituality and today's global events. For the uninitiated, Lee 'Scratch' Perry is one of the most important figures in the history of reggae music. Not only did he help develop the early reggae sound captured in a number of important recordings, but as an engineer, producer, songwriter, and performer he pioneered a number of innovations, including dub reggae. This documentary is set at Lee Perry's mountain top home and studio in Switzerland and features some of the actual sessions for the original studio recording of Revelation. It focuses on Lee's work in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Steve Marshall in both his engineering and his producer ('John Saxon') roles. While not appearing in this film, the musical contributions of very special guests Keith Richards and George Clinton, along with Duncan & Green, Tim Hill, Dr Sleepy, Alec Hay, elodie & Abi Browning, and David Stewart Jones, are included. Visually, it is an interplay of color and light, ritual and the mystical aspects of Lee Perry's spiritual and worldly spontaneity, and a frank snapshot of his musical genius. The documentary also includes excerpts of a free-flowing and revealing interview of Lee Perry by Steve Marshall. The Revelation of Lee 'Scratch' Perry is directed by Steve Marshall, photographed by John Palmer, and is a State of Emergency production. DVD extras include the complete interview of Lee 'Scratch' Perry by Steve Marshall." NTSC format.

VYBZ KARTEL Kingston Story: Deluxe Edition 2LP
Vybz Kartel's Kingston Story, produced by Mixpak founder Dre Skull, is a rare example of a dancehall LP that is more than a collection of singles. Its tracks act as an overview of the many sides of Kartel -- the lover, the party starter, and the astute social critic. Backed by Dre Skull's booming production, Kingston Story's hits, including the sensual plea "Yuh Love", the dance floor anthem "Go Go Wine," and the ecstatic love song "Half On A Baby", can still be found booming out of cars and sound systems from Kingston to New York City and beyond. Originally released in 2011 and out of print for years, Mixpak has repressed Kingston Story as a high-quality double album.

This album got a dark themed kind of feeling, but also got some upbeat melodic parts. The spooky drone sounds make up Part I, before entering the ambient on Part II. Part IV is the most interesting track with some deep beats from the Moog. The pioneering German music composer Klaus Schulze created over 60 albums during his career which started back in 1969. KOWALSKI, LECH D.O.A.: A Right Of Passage DVD
"D.O.A.: A Right Of Passage is the ground-breaking classic 'rockumentary' about the origin of punk rock. Centered around the Sex Pistols 1978 tour of the United States which ended with the group breaking up, the tour was the only one the Pistols played in the United States. Director Lech Kowalski (East of Paradise) followed the band with handheld cameras through the clubs and bars of their seven-city U.S. tour. Mixing this with footage of other contemporary bands, trends in the fashion capitals and punks of all shapes and colors, Kowalski captured a grainy, stained snapshot of the punk movement at its peak (which includes the now famous footage of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen in bed) along with rare interview and concert footage of the late seventies punk rock music scene. With live performances by the Sex Pistols, The Dead Boys, Generation X (with Billy Idol), The Rich Kids, the X-Ray Spex, and Sham 69, along with additional music from The Clash, Iggy Pop!" BREWER, JON Beside Bowie: The Mick Ronson Story DVD
"From Emperor Media Ltd. and acclaimed producer/director Jon Brewer, music icon David Bowie narrates this unprecedented celebration of the life and works of guitar virtuoso Mick Ronson - a rock hero virtually unknown despite his direct contribution and involvement in countless compositions, lyrics and recordings that changed the face of music forever. His humble beginnings in Hull, England underpinned the values and modest, unpretentious personality of Mick Ronson, who worked with the city's council while he pursued his craft with consummate dedication. Soon word of his talent reached David Bowie, who grabbed at the chance to work with Ronson, in what would become a career-long association, alongside collaborations with other greats such as Bob Dylan, Ian Hunter, Lulu and Lou Reed. The Man Who Sold the World, Aladdin Sane, Hunky Dory, The Jean Genie - all were constructed with Ronson on guitar. Sadly in 1993, while working on a solo album, Ronson passed away before receiving the recognition he so richly deserved or before taking that final bow. Now, with unprecedented access to archival backstage footage - never before released - and iconic imagery from superstar photographer Mick Rock, this fascinating and at times controversial special reveals the ultimate authentic chronicle of the career of a cornerstone of rock." COWAL, RORY Clusters: American Piano Explorations CD
"Rory Cowal is a distinctive pianist, one who draws liberally on classical chops, ample experience with improvisation, and a predilection for the new and uncharted. This makes him especially attractive to composers who wish to blur the boundaries between traditional styles and genres. A musical adventurer at heart, Cowal seems drawn to challenging and unusual projects. The eight pieces on this CD reflect this willingness to experiment, to not just play the same old (now canonic) warhorses of the American experimental tradition, but to expand our awareness of what that tradition might include over a large period of time, from Johanna Magdalena Beyer (1888?1944) to Kris Davis (b. 1980), with their adventurous colleagues Muhal Richard Abrams (1930?2017), Daniel Goode (b. 1936), David Mahler (b. 1944), Thomas Peterson (1931?2006), and James Tenney (1934?2006) somewhere in between. The pieces recorded here span from 1931, a time characterized by "ultramodernism" and the theoretical exploration of dissonant counterpoint, to 2018, and the vast influences bombarding young composers in the twenty-first century's oversaturation of digital resources. None of the pieces included here has been previously recorded. Working therefore with no point of reference but the score, Cowal had the special challenge of envisioning them, and bringing them to life based solely on his own understanding of their possibilities."

CURRAN, ALVIN Endangered Species 2CD
"'Endangered Species states, restates, correlates, instigates, inflates and deflates, elevates, formulates, disintegrates, interrogates, percolates, granulates, germinates, Kiss Me Kates, Tom Waits, Norman Bates and W.B. Yeats, horripilates, adumbrates, prestidigitates, sophisticates, enumerates, integrates and contraindicates songs from the standard repertoire, Standards they were called. Old French, Frankish, estendard 'place of formation.' If you asked a jazz musician what he played, he'd probably say Standards and Originals. Standards being popular songs from Broadway or Hollywood, Originals being compositions written by the jazz players themselves. They became the catalysts for infinite extended play. . . . Alvin's standards rise from an uncodified potential of all the sounds in the world. Recognizable but reformed by what had been worked through the nameless sound fields into a strange new life, now audible here.' --Clark Coolidge (from the liner notes) '... The Yamaha Disklavier was the instrument I was waiting for . . . a grand piano which allowed me the luxury of playing not just its own hammers and strings but my entire archive of sound-files: a magic act where the whole world becomes audible directly from my fingertips -- an 80-proof blend of analogue and digital. The selection of songs on this recording is mostly ballads, slow and easy, leaving me time to think, exit into unverified neighborhoods, begin a piece from the end, enter a spontaneous museum of dysfunctional harmonies, sneak out the back door into the cocktail mists looking for traces of MEV street music in a heap of Pistoletto's rags.' --Alvin Curran"

DINNERSTEIN & A FAR CRY, SIMONE Philip Glass: Piano Concerto No.3 LP
"The Grammy-nominated string orchestra A Far Cry and pianist Simone Dinnerstein have teamed up on a new recording of keyboard concertos by Philip Glass. The album will be released on Glass' Orange Mountain Music label. The album features the world premiere recording of Glass's Piano Concerto No. 3, a new concerto for piano and strings co-commissioned by A Far Cry and composed by Glass specifically for Dinnerstein, whom the New York Times calls 'an utterly distinctive voice in the forest of Bach interpretation.' Dinnerstein and A Far Cry toured the new Glass concerto in the fall of 2017, and recorded the album in the stellar acoustics of Mechanics Hall in Worcester, MA. Of their world premiere performance at the New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall, the Boston Globe wrote, '[Dinnerstein and A Far Cry] caught and held the music's patient grandeur, giving each phrase, each chord judicious gravity.' The Wall Street Journal called it 'an inspired pairing,' adding 'Mr. Glass could not have hoped for a more graceful, fluid reading.' The idea first germinated in 2014, when Dinnerstein and Glass met for breakfast in his garden and found that they shared a strong interest in the music of Bach and its impact on the world today. Glass, having come to know her work over the years, offered to write a piece for her, and Dinnerstein proposed that it be a concerto for piano and strings, to be paired with one of Bach's own. She explains, 'There are almost no concertos written for piano and strings since Bach's time. The pairing of the Bach concerto with Philip's own composition creates myriad strands of connectivity, enabling the listener to create bridges between the old and the new.' Glass finished Piano Concerto No.3 in 2017 as a response to hearing Dinnerstein play at the Glenn Gould Prize concert in Ottawa the previous year. He explains in the album's liner notes, 'I can say that Bach's music was not consciously in my mind as I composed this new concerto, but in a way it's unavoidable. My basic musical formation was influenced by the study of Bach for years during my studies with Nadia Boulanger. Inasmuch, while this piece itself is not directly influenced by Bach, his music is by definition a part of mine.' To fund the work, Dinnerstein reached out to a number of orchestras from across the U.S. and Canada, eventually enlisting a total of 12, from various parts of the country, to co-commission the work. It was clear from the beginning that the premiere and recording should fall to Boston's A Far Cry, with whom Dinnerstein had formed a musical connection after filling in for pianist Leon Fleisher at a concert in 2016. Jason Fisher (viola) of A Far Cry says, 'A Far Cry has always been a proponent of new music, and it has been a dream of ours since day one to commission a major work from an iconic American composer such as Philip Glass. We're delighted to be partnering on this project with Simone Dinnerstein, a collaborator beloved by our group and one of America's finest pianists.'"

P. ADRIX Album Desconhecido LP
2019 repress, now in standard printed sleeve. Príncipe kick off 2018 in a big way with the remarkable début by P. (as in "Producer") Adrix; a 22-year-old artist originally from Lisbon, now based in Manchester, who is equally adept at crafting full tilt, teched-out bangers as effervescent electronic soul music. His first release, Album Desconhecido is a supreme example of the innovative scenius in Angolan-Portuguese music, ratcheting the thrilling dynamics of Lisbon's ghetto bass sound with deadly edits and pressure highly compatible with the UK's jump-up jungle, drill, or soca grime vibes. Building on ground-breaking work forwarded by producer/DJs Marfox, Nervoso, Nídia, and Lycox in recent years, Album Desconhecido is jaw-droppingly fresh, even by Príncipe's up-to-the-second standards. And like Lycox, who hails from Angola and Lisbon via France, it's fair to say that P. Adrix's relative detachment from Lisbon has also led him to break the kuduro mold in scintillating new ways, effectively mapping out and recombining a glowing flux of ideas circulating the Black Atlantic diaspora. Delivered in nine short, sharp stings between the seasick drill of "Zelda Shyt" and the laser-guided trance lixx of "Viva La Raça", Adrix trades in a mix of virulent, adrenalized energy and soulful rollage that sets fire to any 'floor across the breadth of Album Desconhecido. It's clear and present in the turbulent, rug-pulling subs and febrile polyrhythms of "Bola De Cristal", and to blinding degrees in the high-wire tension and bone-freezing edits of "6.6.6", whereas the zipping flutes of "Ovni" bind roots and future with breathtaking, needlepoint incision, leaving "Sonhos" to provide a dead sweet, even romantic contrast with the melancholic meditation of "Tejo" for fine measure. After encountering Album Desconhecido, there can be little doubt that Adrix is making some of the most exciting dance music in the world right now -- a boldly expressive and immediately effective sound that drives listeners to a rare but timeless sort of rave ecstasy -- thrillingly synthetic and infused with an unmistakable lust for the dance. In the right hands, it's dangerous stuff. You've been warned! - RIYL: Nídia, DJ Marfox, Arca, Sounds of Sisso (NNT 005LP).

2019 repress. Apologia is a set of unique psychedelic killers from Niagara, mounting a sterling debut album for Lisbon's Príncipe five years after their first 12", Ouro Oeste (2013). Trust that they have lost none of the weirdness that's endeared them to freaks around the world ever since they emerged. If anything they're stranger, spaced-out and more porous to wild influence on the 13 tracks of Apologia. Outlining Niagara's definitive description of contemporary exotica, Apologia limns a frayed, buzzing sort of "Fourth World PLUS" sound, where the "PLUS" refers to their embrace of noise as an agent of chaos. But it's not necessarily malefic chaos, and should be taken as a smart acknowledgement of the overlooked yet crucial role that roughness of grain and construction play in contrast with so many clinically smooth and even anodyne efforts from the same, imagined arena of worldly music for a new age. In allowing for the entropy of time and the inevitable infidelity of attrition to enter their soundsphere, Niagara's organic machine music keenly reflects a natural world order without the need for algorithmic process. Their world is a fertile interplay of acoustic and electronic sources rendering hazy, fata morgana-like glimpses of musical possibility, practically triangulating the visions of like minds such as Jamal Moss/Hieroglyphic Being and Dolo Percussion with the explorative precedents of Portugal's Telectu to realize a fine expression of anachronistic modernism. Most of the tracks loosely work around three-minute timeframes, lending a zig-zagging mosaic quality to the track list in between its longer parts. Richly colorful spiritual jazz arps and raw machine grooves spring from opener "França", triggering a cascade of ideas that bends between acidic kosmiche in "6:30" to the heat-sick boogie gliss of "40" and the stark emptiness of "Senhora Do Cabo", to give up the gorgeous, extended flute and acid meditation "Siena", and mess with Vangelis-style synth majesty on "Via Garibaldi", before spending their coolest energies in the drowsy Afro-Latin swagger of "Cabo Verde". It's hard to ignore the fact that Alberto, António and Sara aka Niagara have distilled their sound to imperfection on Apologia, resulting one of 2018's most crucial lo-fi electronic albums. Artwork/hand-painted sleeves by Márcio Matos, edition of 500.

VA A Creak Retimed LP
A Creak Retimed is a collection of tape reworks of Howlround's original soundtrack from A Creak In Time, directed by Steven McInerney, featuring adaptations and reconstructions by Tom White, Merkaba Macabre, Dan Hayhurst, Ian Helliwell, and Howlround. The film component has been reworked from 16mm film reels that did not make the final cut, resulting in a zero-waste film project. Ian Helliwell is a self-taught multi-media artist, working in music, film, animation, analog electronics, instrument building, collage, installations, live performance, light show projection, writing, and film programming. He has made over 100 experimental films -- one of the largest bodies of shorts in the world to feature electronic music soundtracks by one artist. Howlround is comprised of Robin The Fog, a London-based sound artist and radio producer. He creates unique, immersive compositions and performances by directly manipulating natural acoustic sounds on a quartet of vintage reel-to-reel tape machines, with all additional effects and artificial reverb strictly forbidden. For this soundtrack, he has created his most ambitious work yet, made entirely from tiny and insignificant sounds, that, when amplified and extended via magnetically charged oxide particles of the tape, take on a dramatic new identity. Tom White is a London-based artist. His multidisciplinary practice spreads across sound, moving image, installation, and live performance. He won the British Composer Award in 2014 (Sonic Art) for Public Address, commissioned by South London Gallery. He curates Apologies in Advance; a platform for artist's work in progress performances founded in 2016. Dan Hayhurst is an electronic producer, molecularly 50% of A/V duo Sculpture. The chaotic physicality of Hayhurst's sonics are the result of unstable permutations of tape loops, no-fi electronics, and digital sequences played with a battered reel-to-reel tape recorder, computer, walkman, sampler, and FX units. Merkaba Macabre is a multimedia project by Steven McInerney, an Australian born artist based in London. His practice ranges from audiovisual and musical performance, installation, experimental film and video works, and curatorial activities. McInerney runs Psyché Tropes, a label dedicated to exploring the synaesthetic intersections between sound and its visual counterparts. 180 gram, toxic yellow vinyl; Edition of 275.

HIORTHOY & RUNE KRISTOFFERSEN, KIM Let's Put It To Music: 20 Years Of Rune Grammofon 7"/Book
After having borrowed lines from Jimi Hendrix and English poets for all previous anniversary releases, Rune Grammofon struck out for this one until Kim Hiorthøy, well after the deadline, accidentally stumbled over Johnny Cash and Forever Words: The Unknown Poems (2016). Let's Put It To Music quite nails it when it comes to the basic idea of the book and how the label approach the whole process of making a record. As Tim Gane is quoted in Adrian Shaughnessy's introduction "a Stereolab record was never finished until the cover was done". That rings true for Rune Grammofon as well, and they would like to add that a sleeve is never designed for the sole purpose of selling a product (it took 28 releases before an artist was pictured on the sleeve), or necessarily reflect the music in any way, but rather to establish a suggestive relation between the two, often based on the album title or a song title, but not in an obvious way. After some 200 releases, Kim has never "explained" a sleeve design, and Rune can't remember ever asking him. But it's hard to recall another label that has worked with one designer exclusively for 20 years and 200 releases. The exclusivity was a premise for the collaboration from the very beginning, but Rune certainly never had any expectations about how long the label would be able to keep it going. Especially when considering that Kim is occupied on a number of arenas; as photographer, filmmaker, illustrator, painter, writer, musician, dancer, and choreographer. As one will discover, the book is far from being a catalog lining up the releases (it's not even "complete" or chronological in that sense), but gives an interesting insight by also including sketches, rejected designs, and unused ideas that never left the drawing board... until now. Lists are a source of controversy, as Hedvig Mollestad discusses rather well in her text. The idea of including a 7" single also came late, and would depend on getting at last one track really quick. To Rune Grammofon's delight, they miraculously ended up with what is surely three of the most beautiful tracks in their catalog, and all exclusive for this release, featuring Fire! Orchestra, Maja S. K. Ratkje, and The Last Hurrah!! with Nora Zheng. Introductions by David Fricke and Adrian Shaughnessy. 224 pages.

Souffle Continu Records present the first ever vinyl reissue of Philippe Maté/Daniel Vallancien, originally released in 1972. Although discrete, the career of saxophonist Philippe Maté includes nonetheless several indispensable albums: be it with the Acting Trio, Jean Guérin (Tacet), or Jef Gilson (Workshop), his collaborations in a big band or quartet with Lawrence "Butch" Morris, his presence in the Saxophone Quartet and also on the brilliant 1972 album L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouche by Jean-Claude Vannier (BMS 001CD, FKR 001X-LP). As for the man in the background: Daniel Vallancien, a sound engineer rarely featured on the sleeves; the collection Actuel on the BYG label owes much to him (he is at the controls behind Anthony Braxton, Don Cherry, Sonny Sharrock, or Steve Lacy), and the same goes for Saravah for who he notably recorded Areski, Brigitte Fontaine, Maurice Lemaître, or the Cohelmec Ensemble. Not bad for starters! What is more, Daniel Vallancien is one of a prestigious group of French recording engineers with open ears and often themselves musicians, even if only occasionally for some, including Bruno Menny, Daniel Deshays, or Jean-Marc Foussat, who have all recorded remarkable albums as leaders. Behind this collaboration was the idea of creating music which was free, direct, and spontaneous, while having also a minimum of advance planning. Music, according to the brief liner notes desirous to "remove itself from long and patient laboratory experiments". So, there can be found here none of the sophisticated tools associated with electroacoustic research, but mainly a recording mixer console, which, in the hands of Daniel Vallancien acts directly on the original instrumental sound in real time, modifying and multiplying it while respecting the natural flow. Be it Paul Méfano, Betsy Jolas, Gérard Grisey, or Jacques Lejeune, many contemporary composers working in France have, at one time or another, included the saxophone in their work. Nothing can compare to the singularity of the dialogue between Philippe Maté and Daniel Vallancien, which they themselves describe as being "serious, sarcastic or humorous", with, here and there, "disturbing sounds". Words, however, even those used by the protagonists themselves, are insufficient to describe such a sonic object, difficult to identify and, it has to be said, extraordinary. Licensed from Saravah. "With their roots firmly planted in Detroit's Cass Corridor punk rock and hardcore scene of the early 80s, John Brannon (Negative Approach) and Larissa Strickland (L-Seven), along with the locked in rhythm section of Kevin Strickland and Jim Kimball, the Laughing Hyenas took it to a completely different plane. Taking pointers from The Birthday Party and Funhouse era Stooges as well as early blues and jazz artists, the Laughing Hyenas were a fierce, sulfuric blast of noise. While their style didn't change much over the course of their first three albums, they kept improving on the formula and on Life Of Crime, they reached their peak! Kevin's thick and agile basslines and Jim's bone-breaking drumming make a rhythm section that is incomparable. Larissa's blistering guitar somehow builds haunting melodies out of the sonic chaos. Brannon is a punk rock whirlwind with the conviction of an old bluesman, his relentless howl makes this one of his finest vocal performances to date and make this a truly disturbing and terrifying listen. This is the last record of the 'Butch Vig Trilogy' -- a beautiful, creative partnership that resulted in three untouchable records and helped point bands like Nirvana and Sonic Youth in Butch Vig's direction. LAUGHING HYENAS Hard Times + Crawl / Covers 2LP
"By the time the Hyenas went back into the studio, Kevin Strickland and Jim Kimball had left to form Mule and had left John and Larissa without a rhythm section. Many people thought this marked the end of the band. Not the case. Todd Swalla (founding member of Necros) stepped in on drums and Kevin Ries on bass. Todd is a much more subtle timekeeper than Jim and Ries had no problem locking in with him, but stayed in the background a little more than Strickland leaving Larissa to take up a little more of the slack. She rises to the occasion, her leads a bit more melodic than before, although still blanketed in a sheet of noise. Brannon's anguished vocals will still peel the paint of the walls and over the new slightly toned-down direction, somehow seem even more extreme. Crawl is notably the only of the Hyenas records recorded in Detroit at White Room Studios. Liner notes by Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks) and Allyson Baker (Dirty Ghosts, Teen Crud Combo). Hard Times saw one more line-up change: Kevin Ries left and one time Necros Ron Sakowski stepped in, the Hyenas went down to Memphis to the legendary Easley Studios to record their final LP with the one and only Doug Easley. On Hard Times, we see the Hyenas influences are more Howlin' Wolf/Muddy Waters than they are Nick Cave/Iggy Pop. The full-on sonic assault of the first three records has given way to a hard-hitting groove that has a graceful Exile-era Stones vibe. Larissa's simple and one-of-a-kind guitar playing has never been better. Brannon does more crooning than screaming on this one, giving us their most 'musical' offering yet. Every bit as emotionally ruthless as their previous releases, the Laughing Hyenas went out on a high note with Hard Times. Released in partnership with Touch and Go Records. Liner notes by Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks) and Allyson Baker (Dirty Ghosts, Teen Crud Combo). Includes unseen photos and flyer reprints."

Named after the booking arm, A-Square (Of Course) showcases the absolute best cuts on the highly-collectible label, including rare recordings from the likes of the MC5, the Rationals and the Scot Richard Case. Previously unreleased material from the likes of the proto-Sabbath Half Life and the Stooges' competitors Stoney and the Jagged Edge help expand this collection beyond its original 2008 CD release. Updated liner notes by celebrated 60s rock historian Alec Palao beautifully tell the story of the unique time and place that these songs came from. A must have for garage fans of any era. Direct-to-board double pocket gatefold LP jacket, standard weight vinyl." Black Friday RSD 2018 release.

BRENSTON AND HIS DELTA CATS (FEAT. IKE TURNER), JACKIE Rocket "88"/Come Back Where You Belong 7"
"This is undoubtedly the first distorted rock and roll single ever. It is even sometimes claimed, most prominently by Sun Records founder Sam Phillips, as the first rock and roll single ever. This song's story is a roller coaster, being recorded by Ike Turner and his band, of which Brenston was a member, in March 1951 at Memphis Recording Service. Because Sun Records was yet in operation, the recording then sold to Chess Records in Chicago and was wildly popular, selling over 500,000 copies. Unfortunately, the success and fame of the single caused tense clashes in the band, eventually leading to Ike and Jackie splitting ways to pursue their own solo careers. Die cut Chess Record company sleeve, standard weight vinyl." Black Friday RSD 2018 release.

HOWLIN' WOLF How Many More Years/Moanin' At Midnight 7"
"Recorded at Sam Phillips' Memphis Recording Service at the recommendation of Ike Turner in July 1951, this incredibly influential single is the first ever 7" from legendary bluesman Howlin' Wolf. Interestingly enough, the A-side 'How Many More Years' was cited by T. Bone Burnett as 'in some ways...the first rock and roll song'. The single was later referenced by British blues pioneers Led Zeppelin, both in the title and in Plant's vocals, on their debut album track 'How Many More Years.' The B-side 'Moaning At Midnight' is as heavy as it gets, described by Phillips as 'the most different record I ever heard'. Die cut Chess Record company sleeve, standard weight vinyl." BERRY, CHUCK Back In The U.S.A./Memphis, Tennessee 7"
"Released in June 1959, Chuck Berry dropped an absolutely classic hit single. The A-side 'Back in the U.S.A.' was reportedly recorded after an Australian tour where Berry and his bandmates saw firsthand the dismal living conditions of Aboriginal Australians. Of course, it was later parodied by the Beatles with their White Album smash 'Back in the U.S.S.R.'. The B-side, 'Memphis, Tennessee', hit #5 on the Billboard Pop chart and #4 on the R&B chart upon its release, and is one of Berry's most covered tunes of his catalog, including diverse renditions by Bo Diddley, John Cale, Al Green, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Ernest Tubb and Silicon Teens. Die cut Chess Record company sleeve, standard weight vinyl." Black Friday RSD 2018 release.

HOWLROUND The Debatable Lands LP
In December 2017, Howlround (Robin the Fog) was invited to perform at "The Winter Solstice Soundscapes" for the recently opened record store "Vinyl Café" in his home town of Carlisle, Cumbria. Inspired by the reception to his first ever performance in the great border city, he covered his parent's dining room table with the same equipment, stretched loops of tape around his mum's seasonal candlesticks when she wasn't looking... and this LP is the result. The only equipment used on the album is two 1/4" reel-to-reel tape machines and one microphone. The sounds created are entirely at the discretion of the machines (much of them derived from "closed-input" recordings) and all tracks were produced in a single take. There are no edits, no overdubs and no additional effects. This marks a new, heavier direction for Howlround, a project better known for more ambient work. Described as "Tapeloop Techno", thick knotty tangles of dense, pulsating bass are an echo of Robin's early days making bad dance music, while the abrasive snarls of feedback swirling around these tracks point to his more recent embrace of indeterminacy and chance composition. Previous vinyl releases on Psyché Tropes, The Wormhole, A Year in the Country, and Front & Follow as well as his own label The Fog Signals have shown a deep understanding of the possibilities of tape manipulation. On The Debatable Lands, Howlround eschews the usual field recordings in favor of exploring the interior world of the machines themselves.

VELVET UNDERGROUND, THE The Velvet Underground & Nico LP
2019 repress. Although Warhol, who was listed as producer on the album, allegedly gave the Velvets free reign over their sound, it was on his insistence that Nico performed on this album. However, this does not detract from the fact that when this album was made the Red Sea parted, and the Velvet Underground crossed into the Promised Land. Deluxe gatefold jacket with peeling banana and "Chelsea Girls" bonus track on B5

Mance Lipscomb -- born Beau De Glen Lipscomb near Navasota, Texas in 1895, and nicknamed Mance (short for emancipation) by a childhood friend -- was an incredible guitarist and blues singers who didn't make a recording until the age of 65. Discovered during the folk and blues revival of the late '50s and early '60s, Lipscomb would record regularly until his death in 1976 at the age of 80. A tenant farmer for most of his life, Lipscomb was the son of a former slave father and half-Choctaw Indian mother. He began playing guitar early in his life and spent most of his life performing at "Saturday night suppers" hosted by local friends or, often, by himself and his wife. After his discovery, Lipscomb would go on to perform at the first ever Monterey Folk Festival in 1963 as well as at numerous clubs of the folk-revival, most notable The Ash Grove in Los Angeles. Collected here are his earliest recordings, from 1960, and they are some of the most beautiful and transcendent of Texas folk-blues. Crucial recordings from one of the greatest individual voices of the folk and blues revival.

LEADBELLY King Of The 12-String Guitar LP
Huddie William Ledbetter, better known to the world as Leadbelly, was one of the most celebrated guitarists and vocalists of 20th century American music. He introduced the world to many traditional folk and gospel songs and his versions remain some of the most well-known and beautiful ever cut to tape. Born on a plantation in Louisiana in 1888, Leadbelly got his start as a teenager performing in the red-light district of Shreveport. "Discovered" by the legendary folklorists John and Alan Lomax while Leadbelly was serving time in Angola state prison for attempted murder. They recorded him while in prison and in 1934, at the age of 46, made these recordings, the first commercial recordings of his career. Featuring a wide repertoire of folk and blues songs along with his powerful voice and unique guitar style, these tracks are absolute cornerstones of American folk and blues music and some of the greatest tracks he ever cut.
