BLACK MOUNTAIN TRANSMITTER Black Goat Of The Woods LP
Released on CD by Aurora Borealis back in 2010, the label present Black Mountain Transmitter's Black Goat Of The Woods on vinyl. An ode to the Lovecraftian lore of Shub Niggurath, Black Goat Of The Woods was conceived as "the soundtrack from some lost low budget horror movie, rediscovered on an old and faded VHS cassette found moldering in a deserted house in the depths of the woods". The one-man project of J.R. Moore, Black Mountain Transmitter has released several albums, all to great critical acclaim, and the quality of his work speaks volumes. The original Black Goat Of The Woods CD version was the first official release, and a reissue of the long sold-out and much sought after limited CD. On describing the recording, Moore said: "The music was certainly very much influenced by that certain breed of '70s horror films. Things like the soundtrack to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Giuliano Sorgini's atmospheres in Living Dead At The Manchester Morgue (1974); Carl Zittrer's soundscapes in Deranged (1974), Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things (1972), and Dead Of Night (1974), and of course people like Fabio Frizzi in Italian horror and the BBCs Radiophonic Workshop's electronic sounds in something like The Stone Tape and countless creepy old TV productions..." An excellent, macabre and psychedelic release that spans electronica, soundtracks, and experimental genres in its 40-minute playing time, Black Goat Of The Woods pays perfect homage to the dark denizen of the nocturnal glades, and is a true paean to backwoods horror. Mastered for vinyl by James Plotkin; Cut at The Carvery, London. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code and printed insert; reverse board heavyweight sleeve; edition of 300.

BILLOW OBSERVATORY III: Chroma/Contour CD
III: Chroma/Contour is the third album from Billow Observatory, the collaborative project of Danish producer Jonas Munk (Manual, Ulrich Schnauss collaborator, and more) and Michigan native Jason Kolb (Auburn Lull). The album's nine tracks eschew the pulse and rhythm that defined the duo's previous effort -- II: Plains/Patterns (VISTA 002CD/LP, 2017) -- in favor of sparse melodic possibilities and a more abstract palette of sounds. Chroma/Contour suggests looking both 20 years forward and twenty years back, while forgetting the present altogether. Much of the album plays out as a study in minimalism: the texture and color of each sound is being explored in miniscule detail, with enough space in the sound field to allow each sonic constituent to breathe fully. There's a conceptual dimension to several tracks on the album, with guitars, analog synths and voices being mangled by samplers, computer software, and a broken dictaphone into pure abstraction. But simultaneously there's a melodic undercurrent, revealing a deeply emotional aspect of the music. Tracks such as "Color In The Six", "Iris", and "Soft Logic" convey a melancholic sense of awe, a profoundly calming glimpse of the sublime. As with the best ambient music, the power of these nine pieces lies in their open-endedness and suggestive potential. Rather than imposing on the listener and presenting a flawless, fully-formed aural landscape, the music creates an evocative space for the listener to explore and expand in. RIYL: Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works, Stars Of The Lid, Slowdive's Pygmalion (1995), Brian Eno.

C'MON TIGRE Racines CD
Tradition and experimentation are two familiar territories that C'mon Tigre, a duo who find their identity by working with musicians from all over the world, can balance between very well. As they did for their debut album (2014), they have put together a multicolored collective for their second record Racines. The title is a French word that means "roots", referring to the musical roots in which C'mon Tigre's feet, head and heart are immersed, and from which their contaminated tracks sprout to create unusual and original sound environments. On Racines the sounds of the Mediterranean -- the sea of their land -- intersect, intertwine, and overlap with a kaleidoscope of other sounds and a new approach based. They explain: "on the type of work we had done when we rearranged the first album for live shows, by emphasizing the synthetic part of our tracks". This time around they did it from the very beginning: "The composition of the pieces immediately included the use of machines and synthesizers as a basis for acoustic instruments. The goal was to reprocess the terrain of Mediterranean influences that was undoubtedly our starting point". Imagine a work in progress where bass and guitars interact with woodwind, synths, percussions, vibraphones, dipping the listener into a sensual and hypnotic musical journey. Sailing from the Mediterranean basin and being guided by the fascination for Africa and the Middle East, C'mon Tigre give rise to a personal language, made up of mixtures with jazz, Afrojazz, the rhythms of hip hop, funk, and '70s disco. All without ever confining their songs to one style, but pushing the exploration as much as possible, into a dimension that every journey worthy of this name should encompass. "With the musicians we work with the exchange and experimentation continue till the end, the songs can take different directions at any time". The result is a mixed, cosmopolitan record, which escapes from any label for the affirmation of a free attitude. The attitude that led C'mon Tigre to seek a connection with dancefloor culture, even if considered only as an evocation to revisit in an absolutely personal way. "Underground Lovers" features vocals by Mick Jenkins. Other collaborations include musicians like DRB of Drumetrics and The Tiptons Sax Quartet.

POWDER Powder In Space CD
Powder is an alchemist of time. Her ceremonious DJ sets invite listeners and dancers to extend their imaginations to abstracted spaces, while allowing the body to vessel the voyage in free, flowing style. Playful, thoughtful, and natural without knowing, Powder's crates encourage abandonment of arbitrary boundaries and expectations surrounding genre, movement, schedule, and societal convention to revel, spirited and harmonious, in the passage of time. Momoko Goto relocated from her hometown of Nagasaki, Japan to Tokyo in 2011. This is where the story of Powder, as the international dance music community knows her, begins. Moko's musical mission to transcend weighty time-based associations, to shed light on the positive possibilities of passing time, resonates far past her island's shores. Experiencing the pleasure that comes from physical and emotional transformation. Creating and nurturing memories. In embracing these positive properties of time, Powder uses the hypnotic language of patterns to communicate with listener-dancers. Patterns represent the meter by which bodies are compelled to move; they also represent a method for collection and organization of sound, where the cohesive stylistic and historical narrative of different pieces of music are laid over one another transforming both intimate and universal moments into a dreamy, experiential, and endlessly interpretable whole. Since her debut release on Born Free Records, 2015's Spray (BORN 016EP), Powder's sound has flirted with numerous unconventional dance institutions and outlets, releasing on ESP Institute, Wichelroede, and the Cocktail D'amore imprint, as well as regularly contributing to the latter's illustrious mega parties. For her Powder In Space mix, Moko presents two new songs that were created within a new schedule, with summers spent touring Europe and North America, welcoming the unique experiences offered by each location. "New Tribe" toasts the global community Powder's connected during her travels. Marching-band snares, breathy ostinatos, motivating chords, springy auxiliary percussion and bouncy melodic details -- all Powder trademarks, coalescing into one of her most celebratory offerings yet. "Gift" is a subtler jam, shuffling and twinkling in perfect balance. Reminiscent of "Spray", it sustains a retro-futuristic groove that defies the house/techno categorical binary. Features Samo DJ & Hidden Operator, Tornado Wallace, Acid Pauli, Don't DJ, Daphne, Vedagor, Second Language, Bluntman Deejay, Tiago, Karamika, The Sun God, Powder, Vertigo Inc., K-LINE, Kettenkarussel, Jules Etienne, Lord Of The Isles, and Cos/Mes.

SCHICKERT, GUNTER Nachtfalter CD
Günter Schickert's debut Samtvogel (1975) was one of the most significant guitar albums of the krautrock era. Points of comparison from today's perspective are Syd Barrett or Pink Floyd's more adventurous early recordings. Schickert's follow-up, Überfällig (1980) was released on the legendary Sky label. Once again a milestone recording, it showcased Schickert's hypnotic echo guitar which developed into one of the hallmarks of the krautrock sound. Schickert's new album Nachtfalter, translating as "moth" in English, carries on from these beginnings, making it hard to believe that he has in the meantime reached pension age. Recorded during the scorching hot summer of 2018, Nachtfalter shows the pioneer of the echo guitar sounding his very best. Here Schickert was assisted by Andreas Spechtl, who recorded the album and played the drums. Spechtl selected the best moments of Schickert's guitar tracks, and mixed them while also supplying his own loops. Even though the album was conceived as an instrumental, it inadvertently developed into a concept piece, named after the moth, which had entered the room at some point during the recording sessions. As a silent witness, it clung to the ceiling all night. In the morning, Schickert found the insect dead on the floor. He took a photo of the moth for the cover, paying tribute to the dead animal. Nachtfalter opens with the atmospheric track "Nocturnus", Schickert's conch shell horns creating an eerie mood. Next, the krautrock juggernaut "Ceiling" runs to nearly seven minutes of playing time; it's not just the music levitating here. A further highlight is the urgent "Wohin" with its insistent, furious drumming by Spechtl, whose patterns meet the howling echo guitar by Schickert. The impressive "Reflections" concludes the album by uniting all the elements of Nachtfalter's hypnotic soundscapes. The music could serve as soundtrack to a horror movie, with guitar sounds being complemented by noise resembling a train whistle, plus the squealing and humming of a tormented analog synthesizer. "I was born in Berlin and am a true city child", explains Schickert, "When I was young, I often travelled on the bus or the underground train. The awesome rhythm of the engines has indelibly imprinted itself on me. My music has been the expression of this experience." Listening to Nachtfalter, one can only conclude that on Schickert has created a perfect synthesis of the hectic, motorik rhythm of the big city and the gentle beat of the wings of a moth.

STATION 17 Ausblick LP
LP version. One of the greatest things about pop music is that rules can be summarily ignored. Ninety-nine times out a hundred, however, there is a tendency to stick to those very same rules, failing to break the chains of market forces or stem the tide of expectations. Whatever. Station 17 are not amongst those who follow well-trodden paths. This band, all too often referred to as a "project", can look back on a richer history than most, amassed over thirty years. To mark this anniversary, a new album entitled Ausblick is set to appear alongside a retrospective, Werkschau (BB 315CD/LP). The new record is a twin of sorts to Blick (BB 285CD/LP, BB 298LTD-LP, 2018): a collection of exciting collaborations. Created in a remote studio in the tranquil environs of Niebüll, northern Germany. From kraut legends such as Günter Schickert and faUSt to the friendly countenances of electronically inclined musicians like Schneider TM and Ulrich Schnauss, all the players have one thing in common: they have seamlessly aligned themselves with the production and composition techniques of Station 17, embracing the spontaneity of the situation here and now rather than seeking to impose their own methodology on proceedings. "The town is a blur before your eyes" ("Die Stadt verschwimmt vor dem Gesicht") is one line on "The Midday Sun Freezes" ("Die Mittagssonne Friert") and it is astounding to note how similar the images evoked by the music are to the images painted in the supremely intelligent lyrics, bordering on the wise. Directness is at the heart of Ausblick, a light-hearted obfuscation of distance which works equally well in doped up dubs and out-there krautish electro tracks. The inobtrusive sounds never feel forced. Everything flows, yet every song stands on its own -- as an agent of experimentation and pop, of aimlessness and barely articulable precision. Only a band who know exactly what they are doing are capable of such feats. Ausblick features Pyrolator, Günter Schickert & Schneider TM, faUSt, Datashock, Harald Grosskopf & Eberhard Kranemann, Andreas Dorau, Andreas Spechtl, Ulrich Schnauss, and Günter Schickert.

STATION 17 Werkschau LP
LP version. Anyone who has followed the progress of Station 17 over the past three decades will know: the only constant in this band is change. Evolving, stretching musical parameters, testing limits -- these are the guiding principles of the band founded in 1988 by a group of mentally handicapped residents -- Wohngruppe 17 -- in Hamburg. Kai Boysen, an independent musician working with them as a curative teacher, started up the collective as a creative and social project, the first of its kind in the alternative music scene to bring together musicians with and without disabilities. Eleven official albums (if you count two remix albums) have been released since then. Over the years, Station 17 have increasingly emancipated themselves from the basic idea of a socio-creative project and advanced to the status of an internationally acclaimed combo in the experimental indie rock sector, conjuring up their own mix of electronic, krautrock, disco, noise, and pop. This long and emotional journey has seen the collective play more than 800 concerts all over Europe. Two extensive documentaries have presented their story on screen. The roll call of renowned guests and collaborators includes Holger Czukay, Fettes Brot, Gudrun Gut, Andreas Dorau, DJ Koze, and Die Toten Hosen, to name just a few. The anniversary compilation Werkschau offers a wonderful introduction to the cosmos of these pioneers of inclusive music production.

VA Take Us Home: Boston Roots Reggae From 1979 To 1988 CD
"In the 1970s reggae music burst forth from its birthplace of Jamaica and took over the world. Who would have ever thought that one of the first outposts it captured on its way to global domination would be an unlikely city known mostly for its Brahmin heritage and blue-collar brawlers as well as for violent racial polarization? Boston, Massachusetts was the first region in the US to really 'get' reggae, adopting it as early as 1973 when the city's huge student population turned the low-budget Jamaican B-flick The Harder They Come into a midnight cult classic. The city would gain a reputation as a key market for any international reggae act trying to gain a foothold in America. But besides being early enthusiasts and advocates for the music, Bostonians would also become bountiful producers of reggae as well, with a network of clubs, singers and musicians coalescing to form an organic Boston roots scene: A scene that would yield acts as varied as Zion Initation (a solid, spiritually-inclined Rasta band), to the I Tones (an ambitious, multiracial group that set a new standard for pop success), and even reaching across New England to embrace the Vermont-based Lambsbread (a latter-day reggae reincarnation of the legendary African-American proto-punk trio Death, later made famous by 2013's revivalist documentary A Band Called Death). Boston-based music journalists/historians Noah Schaffer and Uchenna Ikonne have teamed up with Cultures of Soul to compile an overview of some of the most crucial cuts to emerge from Boston during the height of the reggae boom in the 1980s. Formatted on CD or 2LP set both configurations come with a 28-page book documenting the rich history of this music scene with in-depth analyses and photos of the reggae artists involved. Almost all of this music is reissued for the very first time, including rare gems such as Danny Tucker's 'Our Father's Land,' Zion Initation's 'Think About It,' I Tones' 'Love is a Pleasure' and Lambsbread's 'Two Minute Warning' are sure to delight both roots connoisseurs and newcomers to the genre, and open up a time tunnel to a little-known golden age of American reggae, and an even less-known scene that facilitated the expansion of the music into an international phenomenon."

RICH, SABRINA Smooth Operator 12"
"Cultures of Soul is very excited to announce this killer tropical reggae cover of Sade's 'Smooth Operator'. Recorded at Circle Sound Studios in Miami the backing track was recorded by members of the famous reggae outfit Inner Circle with vocals by local area rising star at the time, Sabrina Rich. Sabrina (her real name is actually Sabrena) had been making records in her and her ex-husband's studio in their garage for years. The result of which was the disco 12" Exit/Whispering. Around this time Sabrina was performing in the Palm Beach / Boca Raton area of Florida and performed with Jimmy Bo Horne. Sometime after Sabrina worked with a man named Kenneth Corey who mastered her recordings. Kenneth referred her to Roger and Ian Lewis of Inner Circle to help press up their vinyl. They became friends and around 1985 recorded 'Smooth Operator'. During this time they were working and partying hard and experimenting with different ideas and sounds. The track was originally released in small numbers as sort of a demo and never really took off. Shortly after Inner Circle went on tour in Europe and the single went into obscurity until many years later when copies of the record turned up in New York and Toronto. This 12" includes a special discomix edit by Duckcomb aka Patrick Billard, DJ and record collector extraordinaire."

DESIDERII MARGINIS Vita Arkivet CD
"Long awaited new material by one of Sweden's most revered dark ambient acts. Vita Arkivet translates from Swedish as 'The White Archive' and is an official document detailing ones funeral arrangements. In death our existence is whitewashed, the slate wiped clean. We start all over and we bring nothing with us were we go. We lose the agency of our own memory and leave it for those left behind to attend to, to continue our story, to write our eulogy. 'Vita' is also the Latin word for 'life', so the meaning could also be 'The Life Archive'. White is the colour of the casket lining, the plaster death masks and the walls of the chapel, it is the colour of the first and last pages. What is kept in between the covers of our life archives? This record is a personal reflection and manifestation of that process, the loss and the great detachment from life, from others, and from ourselves."

DESIDERII MARGINIS Deadbeat CD
"Remastered reissue of the long unavailable 2001 follow-up to Desiderii Marginis first album Songs Over Ruins. Work on Deadbeat began in 1999 and one specific aim was to create an album with a strong sense of unity and cohesion, to keep building on the sacral atmospheres of previous work but to aim for added depth and a darker, colder, more industrial sound throughout. At a time when dark ambient music was very much finding its way it certainly felt of the essence to create something with a wider expanse than before, and to try to make it personal as well as emotional amidst the gritty soundscapes. One could say that the delicate balance between the ugly and the beautiful, the harsh and the serene, the darkness and the light that has been a fundamental part of Desiderii Marginis since the onset, came into fruition with this album. NOT WAVING Futuro (Music For The Waldorf Project) 2LP
Futuro is Not Waving's sublime synth/ambient soundtrack to one of the world's most intense art/theatre experiences: Sean Rogg's radical immersive artwork The Waldorf Project -- fusing choreography, spatial design, music, and performance into a cohesive experience. Drawn from more than 20 hours of material made for the project between 2013-2018, Futuro finds Alessio Natalizia exploring a style of tonal and spatial minimalism that works as a fine palette cleanser from much of what you've heard from him in the past. While not a new solo album, per se, the long form, Eno-like results of Futuro demonstrate the full wingspan of Not Waving's obsessive knowledge and emotive feel for electronic composition, making it in some senses one of the more substantial and unusual releases in his catalog to date. Natalizia's site-specific work ranges from highly emotive synth meditations thru to bittersweet kosmische intuitions, and milky, Eno-esque beauties. But if any part sums up the widescreen scope of Not Waving's music in Futuro, it's the final side's 17 minutes of awning, gently curdled synth pads -- originally used in a performance to 4000 people in Thailand laid in pitch black, with bodies formed in triangles while dancers caressed their faces. It ends the album with such memorable effect as to make it something of a modern day environmental/ambient classic -- and perhaps our favorite Not Waving release in an already enviably deep catalog. Limited edition vinyl; full color insert featuring photographs by Lee Arucci. Mastered and cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. RIYL: Laurie Spiegel, Steve Roach, Brian Eno, Shuttle 358.

THIGHPAULSANDRA Practical Electronics with Thighpaulsandra LP
LP version. As audacious as the sleeve it comes housed in, the UK's most eccentric audio malefactor returns with his eighth studio album, Practical Electronics with Thighpaulsandra. Unique in the Thighpaulsandra oeuvre, this one eschews the usual group-based recordings, consisting of electronics and vocals only. Hovering between haunted narratives and extended instrumental sequences, Practical Electronics is an eccentric excursion into playful pop and fearless electronic experimentation. Simultaneously intimidating and accessible, the energy of this untamed mind unleashes an artifact where high art unfolds as an oblique electronic cabaret. Having cut his teeth amongst such legendary outfits such as Coil and Spiritualized, Thighpaulsandra has constantly catapulted himself further and further into a musical landscape utterly of his own devising. Practical Electronics is the latest exemplary installment of a voice that is uncompromising as it is outlandish. Cover design by Liam Thonas; Photography by Siôn Oegon. Recorded and mixed by Thighpaulsandra at Aeriel Studios, Brechfa between 2017 and 2018. Mastered by Matt Colton at Alchemy Mastering, London.

CHICAGO ODENSE ENSEMBLE Chicago Odense Ensemble CD
Chicago Odense Ensemble is a unique collaboration that came together in the winter of 2008 while Danish musicians Jonas Munk and Jakob Skøtt stayed in Chicago. Via mutual friends, and a support gig for Isotope 217 in Millenium Park, a studio session was arranged for the two to improvise and lay down ideas with some of Chicago's finest improvisers, including members of Tortoise and Chicago Underground Collective. Improvisation aren't unusual for the two Danes, however, as they were already more than accustomed to working from spontaneity and freeform structures in long-running psych/kraut/prog unit Causa Sui, and has since then participated in a number of installments of the Impetus series on their own El Paraiso Records label. During the Chicago studio session hours of loose ideas, grooves and atmospherics were recorded, ranging from loud, intense musical outbursts led by cornetist Rob Mazurek, to delicate, colorful ambiences. Later, the finest moments were edited, re-arranged, and mixed by Jonas Munk in his studio in Odense, doing a great deal of cutting and pasting, and adding a psychedelic and dubby vibe to the soundscape, using delays and effects as instruments during the mixing process. The result is something quite unique: a sonic brew that exists somewhere in between the aesthetics of impro jazz, hypnotic rock, and electronica. The closest reference for this kind of music is probably early 1970s proto-fusion jazz that strived for a similar synthesis of jazz improvisation, psychedelic rock, Eastern and African sounds as well as the use of the studio as a musical tool. Conceptually this album therefore seems more related to Miles Davis's ventures into electric music in the late 1960s that culminated in the early 1970s with albums such as Live-Evil (1971). And album centerpiece "Delivery" gives a possible answer to the mystery of what the fabled collaboration between Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix might have sounded like, had it ever happened. Even though Chicago Odense Ensemble is undeniably modern sounding in some ways, it also reaches back to an era in music where the fusion of jazz and rock were still regarded with optimism, and where musical spontaneity and freedom seemed a vehicle for cosmic beauty rather than esoteric formalism. Personnel: Rob Mazurek - cornet; Jeff Parker - guitar; Dan Bitney - drums and percussion; Matt Lux - bass; Brian Keigher - percussion; Jonas Munk - guitar, electronics; Jakob Skøtt - drums, percussion.

SHIPP TRIO, MATTHEW Signature CD
Matthew Shipp has established himself as the premier jazz pianist of his generation over the course of a three-decade career including many acclaimed albums under his own name plus his prominent tenure in the David S. Ware Quartet and a vast array of collaborations with the likes of Spring Heel Jack, Ivo Perelman, Sabir Mateen, Darius Jones, Joe Morris, Jemeel Moondoc, Mat Walerian, and many more. ESP-Disk' in its four-years-and-counting association with him has already presented Shipp in solo, duo, trio, and quartet projects. On the album Signature, ESP-Disk' will finally have an album with him in his primary setting, his piano trio with bassist Michael Bisio and drummer Newman Taylor Baker. Mr. Shipp says, "The piano trio is such a basic configuration in jazz, and it is an honor to take a well-explored area and apply my imagination to it to see where we can go -- it helps that my trio mates are great." Starting in the bebop era, the piano-bass-drums lineup has been the most classic jazz format in which the piano is featured, accumulating the weight of history and critical expectations. In this setting, a non-mainstream player such as Shipp can infiltrate Newport Jazz Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and other establishment bastions in a familiar format and then unleash his ideas on audiences that might not normally be exposed to his style, but thanks to hearing it in the communal language of the piano trio, they can better understand the message the Matthew Shipp Trio has to deliver. Shipp, Bisio, and Baker convened at Shipp's favorite recording venue, engineer Jim Clouse's Park West Studio, on July 9th, 2018 and laid down the album in a series of first takes. It is a worthy successor both to the group's much-praised previous releases and to the iconic piano trios throughout jazz history. Produced by Steve Holtje. Engineered by Jim Clouse. Personnel: Matthew Shipp - piano; Michael Bisio - bass; Newman Taylor Baker - drums.

CONTI, IVAN MAMAO Poison Fruit CD
From an artist in their seventies, you probably wouldn't expect to hear an album like this. But Brazilian drumming legend Ivan "Mamão" Conti has been experimenting and innovating for the last half a century. As one third of cult Rio jazz-funk trio Azymuth, Mamão was at the root of the group's "samba doido" (crazy samba) philosophy, which warped the traditional samba compass with jazz influences and space age electronics. Even with his lesser-known jovem guarda group The Youngsters, Mamão was experimenting with tapes and delays to create unique, ahead-of-its-time sounds, way back in the sixties. More recently Mamão recorded an album with hip-hop royalty Madlib under the shared moniker Jackson Conti. With his first album in over twenty years, and the first to be released on vinyl since his 1984 classic The Human Factor, Mamão shares his zany carioca character across eleven tracks of roots-y electronic samba and tripped-out jazz, beats, and dance music. Featuring Alex Malheiros and Kiko Continentino on a number of tracks, the Azymuth lifeblood runs deep, but venturing into the modern discotheque (as Mamão would call it), Poison Fruit also experiments with sounds more commonly associated with house and techno, with the help of London-based producer Daniel Maunick (aka Dokta Venom) and Mamão's son Thiago Maranhão. Take a bite of Mamão's psychoactive papaya and join the maestro on a weird and wonderful stroll through the Brazilian jungle. United by a love for the music of Mamão and Azymuth, the CD version also features remixes and dubs from some of today's most forward-thinking producers with a penchant for percussion: IG Culture, the 22a crew (Tenderlonious), Max Graef, Dokta Venom, Reginald Omas Mamode IV, and Glenn Astro.

BISSETT & TH MANDAN MASSACRE, BILL Awake in th' Red Desert LP
"For the first release in Feeding Tube's Unknown Province series -- a run of records dedicated to exploring little known nooks of the Canadian underground, curated by Alex Moskos -- we are delighted to bring you the first vinyl reissue of the 1968 zoner masterpiece by poet bill bissett and his fellow Vancouver freaks. We have always been shocked this LP was not included on the NWW list, but Canadian releases often seem to exist in their own universe, so we suppose that's the 'explanation.' Because, in a list of any free-form freakouts, Awake in th' Red Desert would surely have a high place. bissett was a sound/concrete poet of high repute when this was recorded, and he was also something akin to the king of the Vancouver underground scene. The original album was issued by Jim Brown's See/Hear label, which Brown founded as an adjunct to his Talon Books imprint. Backed by a band of interesting musicians (a few of whom went on to straighter afterlives), bissett created an insane mass of sound, comparable to what Mayo Thompson's Red Crayola was doing in Texas around the same time, laced with heavy Fugs overtones. Pure freaked sonics, created while stoned, for an audience that was similarly blasted, and was willing to decode what was going on using the very best acid logic available. Hard for me to describe how much I love this album. And I will attest that this version sounds better than any other available version ever has or could. It is jacked. Nice detailed liner notes by Alex Moskos set the scene as well as anyone ever will, and if you don't feel your teeth wiggling while this plays, I suggest you may never feel that particular feeling. In your life. bill bissett is still going today, and we heartily suggest that anyone who digs this album runs out and tries to nail down one or another of his wonderful books before the sun sets." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 500.

CHRISTIE, SUSAN Paint A Lady (2019 Edition) LP
2019 edition. A mythical and misplaced masterpiece of lost soft rock and acidic folk funk by a one-hit wonderer lost in the wilderness for four decades. From the producer of Margo Guryan, writer behind Wool, Gerry Mulligan collaborator, Tarantino sound tracker, and Wendy & Bonnie confidant, Paint A Lady now emerges from folkloric obscurity. Within certain record collecting circles, especially those who gather under the umbrella that covers fragile niches like "acid folk" and "soft rock", it's difficult to imagine a time when the legendary Susan Christie album didn't exist. As Finders Keepers' lucky seventh release, Paint A Lady has slowly become one of the label's most requested re-releases, and with this 2019 edition, it is technically accurate to say that this pressing is the first-ever reissue of this elusive and essential LP. The oft overused term "mythical" applies to this album on many levels. Perhaps it's the woozy nostalgia found within the pop craft of Paint A Lady that has led to false rumors that original 1960s copies used to exist on the collectors market, or the bizarre claim that songs like the head-nodding title track, and the acid-drenched sound effects on "Yesterday, Where's My Mind" were just a product of a contemporary studio band trying to create a fake folk funk red herring. As a result, Christie and her producer and husband of 40 years, John Hill have happily taken the repeat phrase "unbelievable" as a compliment to their songwriting skills and foresight. The original 1969 song titles alone do seem custom-built for the nostalgia market: "No One Can Hear You Cry" might lament the unrequited yearning for a record deal which never quite followed Susan's won one-hit wonder novelty hit "I Love Onions"; similarly, "When Love Comes" might allude to the subsequent 35-year wait for the right label to eventually come along. "Echoes In Your Mind" and the aforementioned "Yesterday" could easily allude to the haunting melodies that sat in the can on John Hill's studio shelf while his projects for Margo Guryan, Wool, and Pacific Gas & Electric sat proudly in record racks before benefitting successful French cover versions or making their way on to Quentin Tarantino soundtracks. The track "Paint A Lady" itself, complete with its future-proofed sample-worthy rhythm section, seems like the perfect title for a mock rock pseudo psych contender. Remastered from the original source material; Features both updated and original liner notes.

LISKA, ZDENEK Ikarie XB-1 LP
With this previously unreleased 1963 score for Jindlich Polák's Ikarie XB-1, Finders Keepers present an "elusive" musical artifact by Zden?k Liska, the label's third soundtrack by the composer. Fettered by the hampers of communism, this lifelong resident of Czechoslovakia would never quite find his seat at the same table as the likes of John Barry, Ennio Morricone, Michael Nyman, and Stanley Myers. But having waited patiently behind the borders of the wider landscapes of international cinema, Liska's musical brood, spanning multiple stylistic decades and generations, has now started to walk proudly amongst his would-be, latter-day compeers. In an era where music lovers have almost become immune to adjectives like "lost", "rare", and "unreleased" in a climate where previously lesser-known off-kilter master composers such as Vannier, Kirchin, and Axelrod have become widely revered, it is perhaps the perfect time for discerning listeners to advance above the feeding trough and seek out this truly pioneering and revolutionary Eastern European composer. Rivaled only by the likes of Krzysztof Komeda and Andrzej Korzynski in Poland, alongside Alexandr Gradsky in Russia, and often splitting workloads with fellow Czech composers like Lubos Fiser, Zden?k Liska's filmography of over almost 300 fully formed movie scores virtually eclipses the achievements of these socialist era luminaries. Respected unanimously in both Czech and Slovakian by studio bosses, producers, directors and actors alike Liska is widely known for his ability to take the existing energy in a reel of film and literally change the polarity to suit his own interpretation while maintaining the full support from his "client" who would in-turn end up working under this composer's creative direction. Not only was Liska a genius of emotive orchestral and coral composition, his grasp on small group arrangements and intimate, minimal scores set him above the competition. By utilizing primitive sample techniques by "looping" a film's existing ambient noise, or rearranging found sounds and dialog into subtle melodic arrangements, Liska would independently develop his own techniques which had simultaneously become known in Paris as musique concrète. It is a direct extension of these experiments that saw Liska also draw parallels with Walter Branchi (Ennio Morricone's main electronic sidekick) in Italy as well as Daphne Oram in the UK, making Liska a relatively untraveled pioneer of early electronic composition and sound design due to his unlikely global environment. Remastered from the original tapes with the full cooperation of the National Film Archive in the Czech Republic.

Miren (Mice) voiced her heart while opening up her throat, while Rafa Rodrigo really strummed his guitar. Ainara LeGardon brought the extremes, the excitement. "Our cries arrived while listening to hundreds of horses galloping across the plains, dust floating in the air behind them. The feeling of everything falling into place, finally. All of this had just become an album." Aitor Etxebarria closed the door, elegantly. Moxal is the name given to a foal. Sensitive to the environment, the places it wanders and the beings around it. Sometimes doubtful, impatient, though always ready to listen while growing and learning to walk alone. Moxal is a project coordinated by musician and producer Hannot. ASSOUF, KEL Black Tenere CD
On the heels of their acclaimed album Tikounen (ZEP 032LP, 2016) -- a recording The Guardian called "a leap forward in the modern Tuareg sound... truly radical" -- Kel Assouf return with an even more transformative collection: Black Tenere. Produced by the band's keyboardist Sofyann Ben Youssef, the mastermind behind the highly touted AMMAR 808, the new album strips things back to a power trio lineup and focuses on the crackling, forward-looking energy of Nigerien front man Anana Ag Haroun's next level Kel Tamashek (Tuareg) rock songs. Kel Assouf's musical journey has flowed seamlessly from the well-spring created by Ishumar desert rock pioneers Tinariwen -- that Haroun first encountered as a young musician in Niger -- towards sonic horizons that include the rock classicism and the club beats and astral ambiance of European electronic music. On Black Tenere, the band pushes these different textures and influences towards a persuasive, raw-edged crescendo. The messages found in Ag Haroun's lyrics are potent, tragic, and inspiring in their defiance. The struggle of the stateless Kel Tamashek (a name they prefer to the colonial moniker "Tuareg") to maintain control of their ancestral lands, their dignity and their nomadic way of life, has only recently entered the fringes of Western consciousness. Infused into the sharp, unswerving social analysis, and the calls for resistance, there is also the shimmer of nostalgia and a poetry of deep longing. To record the energized soundscapes of Black Tenere, the trio (Ag Harouna plus drummer Oliver Penu and keyboardist/producer Sofyann Ben Youssef) setup at Stureparken Studio in Stockholm. Ben Youssef, a fast-rising producer responsible for the previous Kel Assouf album and recent records by Algerian rai provocateur Sofiane Sadi and AMMAR 808. The recordings brilliantly reflect the strong collective heart of the band -- each musician supporting the album's propulsive, hypnotic purposes -- yet on many occasions stepping forward in thrilling ways. "Alyochan" is unimaginable without the motorik pulse of Penu's trance-like drumming. Ben Youssef's Hammond organ creates a gorgeous defining space (and an unresolved tension) throughout the long intro of "Ariyal". While Ag Haroun's guitar is often wrapped in distortion, on "Tamatan" he pulls things back, and with the help of Enoesque treatments, his guitar feels star bound and weightless.

SCORPIONS & SAIF ABU BAKR, THE Jazz, Jazz, Jazz LP
Restocked; LP version; includes download. "Incredibly unique modernized adaptations of traditional rhythms of the diverse regions of Sudan, recorded in Kuwait 1980. The 'holy grail' album from Sudan. 'I heard about Seif Abu Bakr and The Scorpions maybe 3-4 years ago. Their album Jazz, Jazz Jazz ended up on my radar because of an eBay auction with the bids eventually rising daily up to a staggering 1000$. The music is a unique combination of incredible horn arrangements powerfully performed, a vigorous drummer contributing a funky backbone and Seif's vocals uniting those elements. The results range from instrumental tracks awaking memories of 1970s crime thriller soundtracks to more Sudanese-rooted tracks, a lot of them modernized versions traditional rhythms of the diverse regions of Sudan and even an excursion into Colgolese Soukouss. The jazz scene started to perish after president Nimeiry's turn away from his socialist policies, that he was widely associated with in the first decade of his rule, towards the implementation of Sharia law in 1983. During the first decade of his rule he had actively supported various artists of the Jazz scene, taking some of them on trips throughout Africa. The 1989 coup of Bashir and his generals then caused the final blow to a once thriving scene. Both of these political events within 6 years lead to significant drawbacks for the Sudanese jazz scene resulting into hardly no gig opportunities left and parties and concerts being critically observed. A number of musicians faced prosecution, most of the time for their political views; some left Sudan for good. Music never completely vanished from public life and even the regime kept selected artists close, but for a majority of those bands affiliated to the jazz scene life and making ends became a lot harder. The Scorpions dissolved as a group around the same time. The re-release was produced with a clean copy of the vinyl version as a source. The original reel tape of the album stayed with Saif Abu Bakr along with another reel with other recordings that were never released. Unfortunately it was lost when Saif Abu Bakr had to flee to Kuwait temporarily during the second gulf war when Iraq raided Kuwait. Both the CD and vinyl version come with extensive booklets with photos, interviews, liner notes. The vinyl version also has a DL code. (Jannis Stuerz / Habibi Funk Records, 2018)."

SONIC DAWN, THE Eclipse CD
The rays of The Sonic Dawn are like a reminder that reality is only temporary. Flickering between light and darkness, their sound burns with an intensity that places the Danish trio among the top psychedelic acts of their time. Following their first two album releases, The Sonic Dawn have toured Europe more or less constantly, only returning home to focus on their biggest work to date: Eclipse. Their third full-length, is the product of a full year's labor, with all 13 tracks carefully selected from among over 40 candidates. Inspired by personal tragedies and the current meltdown of the world as we know it, the songs deal with a feeling of despair that many will recognize, but also seem to say that one can heal and come out stronger, if one dares take the leap. The result is a cinematic journey in sonic technicolor. Here, even the catchiest melody casts a mysterious shadow, and every mind-altering solo is torn out of Emil Bureau's guitar as if it owed him money. Eclipse was recorded to tape at The Village Recording, Denmark's best analog studio, and produced by The Sonic Dawn and Thomas Vang (Roger Waters, etc.). Mastered at Svenska Grammofonstudion by Hans Olsson Brookes (Graveyard, etc.), and cut to vinyl at Abbey Road Studios, for the ultimate sound quality.

STRANGER, THE Bleaklow (Remastered) 2LP
Limited 2019 repress. One of the most destitute and absorbing albums in Leyland Kirby's canon is finally given a much-needed vinyl pressing, following on from its initial CD release in 2008. Bleaklow is harrowing from the start, the opening "Something to Do with Death" reverberating dread via layers of unstable, radiant drones punctuated with pained, hi-pitched howls that cut through the mix with violent intent. "Solemn Dedication" adds percussion to the mix and sits somewhere between classic John Carpenter and Nate Young, but it's on "Indefinite Ridge" that things really take a turn towards that eerie, destabilizing sound Kirby can do so well, like a standout BoC vignette pounded by the rattle of industrial machinery malfunctioning in the background; it's at once deeply unsettling and oddly comforting. "A Melody Drags Me Back" recalls the spirit of Kirby's best-known productions as The Caretaker, except in place of those old 78s you get just the vaguest hint of life and color beneath the endless layers of sonic unease. The album ends with "Ominous Sunset," an incredible 6-minute coda that's perhaps best compared to Kirby's Sadly, the Future Is No Longer What It Was set, sounding like Vangelis' score for Bladerunner aged and degraded yet still somehow conveying all its retro-futuristic romance. It's an astonishing ending to one of Kirby's finest albums. Fully remastered and cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy.

TOSSINI AND FRIENDS, JOE Lady of Mine CD
Lady of Mine is the 1989 debut LP by self-made Italian-American Joe Tossini. An astoundingly honest, passionate record of cosmopolitan lounge music, he willed this charming suburban oddity into existence without any formal musical training. Sicilian by birth, Tossini drifted around the world between Italy, Germany and Canada, before finally settling in New Jersey. After the passing of his mother and the breakdown of a second marriage, an anxious and depressed Tossini took to songwriting as a form of therapy, crafting disarmingly candid lyrics from his extraordinary life and loves. Whatever industry savvy or musical virtuosity he lacked was made up for by unflinching resourcefulness and infectious charisma. Befriending bandleader Peppino Lattanzi at local club The Rickshaw Inn, he was encouraged to animate his singular songs with an ambitious cast of nine players and five backing vocalists, sincerely credited as his Friends. The Atlantic City basement sessions are a low-budget, high-romance testament to Tossini's character and the power of positive thinking. From the defiant, Casiotone samba of "If I Should Fall In Love", to "Wild Dream"'s dizzying escapism and the native tongue croons of "Sulla Luna" and "Sincerita", Lady Of Mine hums with the inimitable magic of a true original. Piercing the heart with an effectively sparse combination of humming keys, CompuRhythm drums, horn flourishes and backing divas, ample room was left for Tossini to frankly deliver his much-needed life lessons. Underperforming commercially at the hands of short-lived label IEA Records, Lady of Mine has since earned a place in the outsider music canon. Recently peaking interest as a cornerstone of the Sky Girl compilation (EFFICIENT 002CD/LP, 2016), the private press trades for inordinate sums, typically with no financial benefit to its creator. Lady of Mine is now finally reissued on the artist's own terms via Joe Tossini Music, in partnership with Efficient Space, restored from original master tapes with unseen photos, extensive liner notes and Tossini's trademark wisdom. Devoutly independent, Tossini has previously self-released the 2015 instrumental album When You Love Someone as well as two books -- a new fiction novel The Devil In White and his autobiography The Accounts of My Life (2014). Placed #10 on Waxidermy's Top 100 private pressings, alongside Donnie & Joe Emerson's Dreamin' Wild (1976), Jim Sullivan's UFO (1969), Stan Hubbs's Crystal (1982), and The Shaggs' Philosophy Of The World (1969).

ASANTE, OKYEREMA Sabi (Get Down) LP
Kalita Records make available once more Okyerema Asante's highly sought-after Ghanaian disco monster, Sabi (Get Down), produced in collaboration with Oneness of Juju leader Plunky Nkabinde. After touring the world and recording with Hugh Masekela, Lonnie Liston Smith and Oneness of Juju, Sabi (Get Down) was Okyerema's first solo record, released privately in limited numbers on his label Atumpan Records in 1980/81. Recorded and manufactured in the USA, but only ever released on the African continent, this self-funded, scarce, and brilliant Afro-disco LP regularly exchanges hands for eye-watering prices. Here, Sabi (Get Down) is repressed in its original, 14 minute-long form (check out some breathtaking vocals by Oneness of Juju's Lady Eka Ete at around 13 minutes!); the title track is backed by the equally impressive "That's My Girl" on the B side. In addition, it is accompanied by extensive interview-based liner notes and never-before-seen photos, detailing Okyerema's career from his membership of Ghana's legendary band Hedzolleh to performing with Paul Simon and Fleetwood Mac twenty years later. Sabi (Get Down) has so far received fantastic support from leading DJs such as Gilles Peterson (who named it the eighth-best reissue of 2017), Hunee, Antal, Palms Trax, Alexander Nut, Red Greg, Nick The Record, John Gomez, Lakuti, Dan Shake, and many others! The hope here is that you love both tracks, and join in celebrating the musical world of Okyerema Asante! Printed inner sleeve.

DONNA REGINA Transient LP
LP version. Includes download code. As Donna Regina, Regina and Günther Janssen have been a fixture in the German indie pop and electronic scene ever since their first release in 1990. From 1999 on, they have released seven LPs and a slew of EPs on Karaoke Kalk. After a collection of cover versions of their songs by fellow artists and bands called Dis Cover - Donna Regina as Recorded By in 2015 (KK 085CD/LP), Transient sees the wife and husband duo both musically and lyrically pick up where they left off with 2014's Holding the Mirror for Sophia Loren (KK 078CD/LP). Even after 28 years and 13 full-length releases, Donna Regina still have much to say and on their first proper studio album since 2015 express it in more languages than ever. Between the English-language opener "Royal Blue" and the final German track "Lass Uns So Tun", Regina Janssen also explores French ("Quatre Septembres", written by Bertrand Burgalat's lyricist Pascal Mounet), Spanish ("Mí Globo De Nieve") and, newly so, Japanese (the Ayako Akashiba-penned "Melancholy Dragon") as languages to convey complex truths with only few and simple words. Simple would be one word with which to describe the music on Transient, although maybe that would be a premature judgement. Even though the Janssens' music, on this album only supported by the Danish guitarist Rolf Hansen on "Quatre Septembres", seems more minimalistic or perhaps even quieter than before, it is still brimming with details and the occasional moment of ecstasy. Transient isn't one of those records that will start slowly, peak in the middle and then fade out, but between songs like the opener "Royal Blue" and the beat-driven "Blitze" or the ambiguous up-beat track "Komm Lass Uns Heiraten" and "Melancholy Dragon" with its elegiac synthesizer harmonies draws on the sharp contrasts in mood and style. As such, Transient may just be the perfect title for this album that lyrically is more at home in the entire world than ever before in Donna Regina's history and also makes it abundantly clear that nothing, neither happiness nor sadness, will be forever. After 28 years and 13 full-length releases, Donna Regina stay in motion because the world does, too.

ZUKIE, TAPPER Black Man LP
LP version. Kingston Sounds present a reissue of Tapper Zukie's Black Man, originally released in 1978 as a Jamaican-only release on Tapper's Stars imprint. Long deleted, it has become a classic in Mr. Zukie's vast canon of musical biscuits and is well overdue this worldwide release for the first time. Tapper Zukie (b 1956. David Sinclair, Kingston, Jamaica) was raised in the rough and tough West Kingston area of Jamaica, between the districts of Trench Town and Greenwich Farm. Living pretty much on the streets from an early age, the youths including the young Tapper had no choice but to fall into the hands of the political parties that controlled various ghetto areas of the town. Music seemed like the only way out of a life of crime and gang culture. A path that Tapper Zukie found by the mid-1970s was establishing himself as a named star on the DJ Roots circuit. Back home in Jamaica he was also getting a name for his production work for other local singers such as Prince Allah and the group Knowledge. To release these productions and his own material in Jamaica, Tapper started up his own label called Stars. It's this label that saw the initial release of this album Black Man. A great collection of Tapper tunes such as his biblical cut "My God Is Real", "Revolution", the title track, and some work overs of some of his fellow Jamaican artists like "Poor Man Problem", a work over of Johnny Clarke's "Blood Dunza" and also Mr Clarke's "Leggo Violence". "Yaga Yaga" is a re-working Horace Andy and Tapper's big hit "Natty Dread Ah She Want", and "Gather Them" is a reworking of Knowledge's tune of the same name with the help from bands like Jah Wisdom and Delroy Fielding. A great collection of tunes and reworkings that will hopefully find a wider audience with this reissue.

ATKINS, JUAN Dimensions / Flash Flood 12"
2019 repress. "Established by Diagonal Records co-founder, Jaime Williams, Life's Good is a necessary, occasional new portal for reissues of golden era Detroit and European techno. The label's first project pays special attention to an overlooked classic and an unheard diamond by Juan Atkins: namely his M500 gem 'Dimensions', which originally appeared on the seminal Buzz compilation, Panic In Detroit; and a previously unreleased version of the Tresor bomb, 'Flash Flood', produced under Juan's Infinti moniker. Both tracks have been 'salvaged' by Russell Haswell and newly remastered by Rashad Becker, bringing them firmly up to scratch for DJs and rendering the material how the artist originally intended it to be received. A stellar highlight of the lush Panic In Detroit compilation and a huge personal favorite of Life's Good, M500's pendulous, percolated and uncannily UK-styled bleeper 'Dimensions' was unfortunately crammed along with three other tracks on the LP's A-side, which made the track tricky or unsuitable for DJing in clubs. With Juan's blessing and access to the original master tapes, Life's Good Records have rectified the problem, re-cutting the tune to its own side of vinyl and, in the process, lending a new lease of life to one of Juan Atkins' subtlest, slinkiest and entrancing early '90s workouts. On the B-side, Life's Good have coaxed out an abridged, alternate version of the all-time classic 'Flash Flood,' which should be well known and adored by any self-respecting Detroit fiend. However, in this version the intro is entirely different, replacing the trancey lead with an acidic synth voice and swapping out the percolated bass for rugged sub-bass surges to much darker, paranoid effect that better lives up to the track's impending title. With the original now over 20 years old and very familiar to the 'heads', the alternate version presents a truly revelatory twist on an evergreen techno anthem."

"Morning Trip is a new imprint under Telephone Explosion dedicated to releasing ambient, experimental and generally optimistic sounds. Originally released on cassette in 1986, Celestial Realms is a collaborative album from new age figurehead and Brian Eno-collaborator Laraaji, and fellow cosmic traveller Jonathan Goldman (aka Lyghte). Laraaji conjures his typically vivid soundworld of shimmering electric zither, while Goldman inhabits that world with pulsing guitar and droning synthesizer. A trance-inducing ambient voyage. Celestial Realms provides a 46-minute blissful ambient voyage featuring zither, bells, synthesizer, and guitar. 'Finally, the best sustained trance music of the year can be found on Celestial Realms, a new co-creation of Laraaji and Lyghte, who use zither, bells, synthesizers, and guitar for their extraterrestrial adventures. Lyghte loves those very low, sustained, flowing tones, and Laraaji sails above one's head with tinkling bells and zither glissandos. Definitely not for grounding or as background to washing dishes!' --Ramana Das (Music Editor, Yoga Journal 1986) Recommended if you like: Brian Eno, Hiroshi Yoshimura and Steve Roach."

HELIOCENTRICS & MELVIN VAN PEEBLES, THE The Last Transmission LP
2019 repress; LP version with download card. "An interplanetary space/love odyssey featuring Melvin Van Peebles (Brer Soul, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song). Following Heliocentrics' Out There and 13 Degrees of Reality albums. 2 CD set -- Instrumentals included on bonus second disc. Van Peebles makes for the Heliocentrics' ideal foil: he did graduate work in astronomy in Holland in the 1950s and maintains an avid interest in cosmology. The Heliocentrics, as their name conveys, draw inspiration from both the philosophic leanings of the likes of Stephen Hawking and interstellar mysteries, like those surrounding the Malian Dogon tribe's knowledge of the Sirius B star hundreds of years before it was discovered. Their music is as indebted to Sun Ra's interstellar jazz as it is inspired by psychedelia's spiritual expanse. The Last Transmission, presented as a vocal album and an expanded instrumental selection on a bonus disc, can be taken as both the band's interpretation of Van Peebles' poem and a musical voyage inspired by Van Peebles' vivid imagery. The band considers it their defining work, the result of more than a decade of playing and recording together. They've found a voice as a band, one that meshes with Van Peebles,' as he weaves an intergalactic 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner.' In between producer/drummer Malcolm Catto's thunderous syncopation and producer/bassist Jake Ferguson's bellowing bass lines, amidst the analog electronics and atmospheric interference naturally accorded by their organic analogue process, Van Peebles' voice floats in and out, spectral in its tone, complete in its conviction in the unfathomable sense that life's eruption in the cosmic expanse made, and in love's ability to transform and transcend death."

VA Loving On The Flipside 2LP
"21 rare and unreleased tracks. Long overlooked ballads from the flip sides of the funk 45s in the now-again vaults. We at Now-Again unearthed so much information about the bands that recorded the definitive disco and modern soul contained in our recently launched Soul Cal anthology that we decided we had no choice but to release an album and a book at the same time. Well, following that line, the music contained on Loving On The Flip Side music is too damn good to be anonymously relaunched, decades after musical visionaries blended the best of heavy funk and sweet soul into a unified whole. And simply telling the stories of these vocalists and bands without allowing their lovelorn pleas to be heard again wasn't an option. Thus, Loving On The Flip Side again offers the enthused a chance to listen to, read about and reflect on another great burst of black American creativity: the creation of the sublime genre we like to call 'sweet funk.' It seems laughable to skip past Thomas East's 'Slipping Around' 7' for the cheesy funk of 'Just A Trip,' or to listen obsessively to Lou Ragland's instrumental funk on the Hot Chocolate LP and ignore his indolent-yet-stirring 'We Had True Love.' Yet we did just that, until we first heard the Darling Dears and Funky Heavy's beautiful two-sider nearly ten years back. This was the record that set Loving On The Flip Side in motion, as the Darling Dears and Funky Heavy's two songs precipitated the sweet funk genre: the dichotomy of Funky Heavy's skull snapping rhythm section and the teenage Dears' angelic harmonies didn't sound like anything we'd heard before. That discovery set off a decade long search for the band and culminated in their discovery, the documenting of their stories, the emergence of their master tapes and the inclusion of their songs on Loving On The Flip Side. The excitement we felt while listening to the Darling Dears and Funky Heavy's masterworks forced us back into the field, in search of other sweet funk swooners and beat-heavy ballads to round out this anthology. The opportunity to present anew such wondrous soul music made the exhaustive process that produced Loving On The Flip Side worthwhile, and allowed us to collect one-offs that escaped prior investigations into the deep funk and sweet soul genres."

MANFREDI, AL Blue Gold 2CD
Now-Again Reserve series. "Al Manfredi is the father of hip-hop producer Exile, and Blue Gold is his little-known West Coast rock masterpiece from 1973. Manfredi's dreams of securing a record deal with this album faded, but he spent the rest of his life recording music. This version of the album was overseen by Exile. Born into a musical family Al Manfredi started writing songs when he was child. As a teenager in 1965, he formed the Nuts & Bolts in the small beach town of San Clemente, California. Inspired by the Kinks, the Beatles and the Byrds, the group separated themselves from the pack by also performing original material written by Manfredi and band mate Mike Ingram. In late 1966 they changed their name to the Lost & Found and relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, where they cut a rare single, 'Don't Move Girl' b/w 'To Catch the Sun,' which now commands high coin from '60s garage collectors. When they returned to San Clemente in early 1967 their music had taken a more psychedelic direction. The Lost & Found were riding high that year, until tragedy struck. Ingram was found hanged under suspicious circumstances and soon after Lost & Found drummer Mike Ryer died of cancer at the age of 19. Heartbroken, Manfredi gave up on the band scene completely and moved to Garden Grove to teach at his family's music store. But alone, behind closed doors, he kept writing songs and working on his music, recording hours of tapes, often tracking all the instruments himself. In 1973 he chose six of his best songs, some of them written back in the Lost & Found days, and had them custom-pressed as an LP. Only a handful of copies were pressed, and most of these were sent out to various record companies in the hope of landing a deal. Despite the outstanding quality of the music, there were no takers. But decades later, collectors discovered the Al Manfredi album and hailed it a West Coast rock masterpiece. In his Acid Archives book, Patrick Lundborg called its discovery a deus ex machina and compared it to David Crosby's first solo album and Hawaii-era Merrell Fankhauser, 'not just the acutely captured mellowness, but the self-confidence and the talent.' This little-known West Coast rock masterpiece was rediscovered and celebrated by Acid Archives founder Patrick Lundborg and others around the time that Manfredi died in 1995. This version of the album, overseen by Manfredi's son Exile, and with Manfredi's story told by Ugly Things' founder Mike Stax, presents the complete package of an incredible lost and found artist."

EFDEMIN New Atlantis CD
"Oh, lovely appearance of death, No sight upon earth is so fair; Not all the gay pageants that breathe, Can with a dead body compare." --Charles Wesley, A Funeral Hymn for a Believer, 1780So begins New Atlantis, the fourth full-length album by longtime Berghain resident Efdemin, aka Phillip Sollmann. The words, sung by '60s California art icon William T. Wiley and embedded in glowing drone swells, set an otherworldly tone for Sollmann's first solo release on Ostgut Ton. Over eight tracks, New Atlantis oscillates between fast, kaleidoscopic techno, multi-layered drones, and acoustic instrumentation, fusing for the first time Sollmann's deep dancefloor productions as Efdemin with his sound art and experimental music projects. The latter include 2017's Harry Partch-inspired Monophonie performance and 2018's Panama / Suez EP with Oren Ambarchi and Konrad Sprenger (ATON 001EP, 2018). Long drawn to utopian musical traditions, Sollmann took inspiration for New Atlantis from Francis Bacon's unfinished 17th century novel of the same name, which describes a fictional island devoted to social progress through the synthesis of art, science, technology, and fashion. In the story, Bacon imagines futuristic "sound houses", which contain musical instruments capable of recreating the entirety of the sounds of the universe; a 400-year-old prophesy of today's digital sonic reality. Through Sollmann's lens, Bacon's vision ebbs and flows over 50 minutes in varying speeds and colors, emerging as a tapestry of different utopian musical traditions -- through billowing synth lines, early Detroit techno, resonant wooden percussion, trance, droning organs, dulcimer, electric guitars, hurdy-gurdy, just intonation, poetry, hymns, and murmuring voices. Sometimes they merge into epic, rhythmic journeys like the 14-minute long title track; other times they appear as a briefly open sound portal ("Temple"), or in the forlorn human voice on "Oh, Lovely Appearance Of Death", calling to be freed from jail of the human body and pass into the afterlife. Like previous Efdemin albums on Dial, New Atlantis veers off the techno path to explore other musical territory. Here however, Sollmann occasionally abandons the club entirely, returning only to push its boundaries with other instruments, mythologies and psychedelic story telling. Mastering by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

DOBSON JR., AL Rye Lane Volume One LP
2014 release, repressed. Sprung up from his much-fêted clubnight of the same name, Bradley Zero has enlisted fellow Peckham local Al Dobson Jr. to inaugurate Rhythm Section International with this: Rye Lane Volume 1, an 11 track mini-LP stuffed to the rafters with summery goodness. The importance of location on Rye Lane Volume 1 appears both tantamount and inconsequential: many of the titles on offer dot specific points of reference on the map (Peru, Grenada, Cameroon, Columbia, Peckham's Rye Lane), but Dobson Jr does his best to melt these heterogeneous influences down into something definably his own. Elliptical funkiness and nimble calypso grooves bob and weave through the melodic, soft-tone jazz stylings, all underpinned by a steady bump. This melange of warm styles mirrors the Peckham streets upon which it was cooked up, teaming with raw energy but quietly confident enough not to shout too loud about it. Tempos shift up and down at will as Dobson Jr shuffles through his strong pack at speed, maxing out the replay value. With it being almost impossible to define the sound of Rhythm Section in one record, Rye Lane Volume 1 perfectly fits the role of inaugural release by the way in which the album encapsulates the sum of Rhythm Section's influences into one coherent blend of experimental, percussive led jams. This selection of tracks, carefully curated from over 200 never-released works, is a concise statement from the Peckham based label as it confidently steps out from its humble suburban origins into the international arena.

NURSE WITH WOUND Homotopy To Marie 2CD/BOOK
Double-CD version includes 30-page metallic hardcover book (15 x 20 x 2cm) containing color and black-and-white art by Babs Santini (Steven Stapleton). Rotorelief present a reissue of Homotopy To Marie. the fifth album by Nurse With Wound, originally released in 1982. Music and sleeve created by Steven Stapleton. The album is "a step on from the Dadaist rock of Merzbild Schwet, with much use of tape manipulation and classical avant-garde techniques". The album, which combines tape edits with resonating gong tones and disembodied children's voices to create a sonic collage, is far removed from the harsh improvisations of the group's early albums. The title of the brief closing track derives from a passage from "Les Chants de Maldoror" (1869), a surreal poetic novel written by Le Comte de Lautréamont. This appropriation of a phrase from Maldoror is shared in common with the title of Nurse With Wound's debut album, Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella (1979); both phrases appear in Lautréamont's work. The album was first issued on Stapleton's own United Dairies label on vinyl, cassette, and later in remastered compact disc including an extra track "Astral Dustbin Dirge". This masterpiece reissue is the official full, double album from the original recording sessions. The four tracks from the original LP are accompanied by additional recordings from the same period.

PLAN, THE Nervous Energy LP
LP version. The Plan has been described as "Talking Heads meets The Breeders", but their debut album Nervous Energy takes the band in a more progressive and experimental direction. Post-punk in origin, but with overtones of no wave, psych, and garage rock, the record flaunts its flexibility with a mismatch of emotions. Nihilism, humor, and pure joy compete and collude with an overriding positivity carrying all songs. The band's snappy lead single "Annotate The Text" boasts a repetitive, tumbling post-punk call-and-response, coming in at just over one-and-a-half minutes. Guitarist/vocalist Rebecca Gillieron says of it: "I used to be an editor, so this was probably written whilst I was meant to be working, and it's about taking control of reality, embellishing the best features of your existence, deleting negative factors, shaping the positive elements." Nervous Energy showcases The Plan's love of straight-forward, good tunes that get screwed-up by degrees. Fierce beats, unruly guitars, barely suppressed mania from the keys, and homemade-cello underlay soaring harmonies delivered by well-matched female vocals. "You can dance to it too," they claim. Originally the side project of Rebecca Gillieron from all-female trio Wetdog, The Plan has become a force of its own. Forming in the summer of 2016, this definitive line-up includes previous members of Vic Godard's Subway Sect, Private Trousers, and The Ghosts, and keeps itself close to home: half the members live together, some are married, many are related. Song themes shape-shift across the record; subjects range from childhood memories (" 'The Wall' was triggered by the memory of throwing a tennis ball against a brick wall at primary school for hours"), romanticizing about natural, local luxuries ("Abbey Wood"), abandoning inhibitions and jumping straight into the unknown ("Pier Party Nerves"), conflicting desires of wanting a nice, quiet, controlled, and peaceful life but at the same time harboring after extreme chaos and instability ("Bright Lights"), and the simple joys of being a parent ("Chorus"). "The perceptiveness of Ray Davies meets the eerie folk of Shirley Collins meets the unstopability of The Fall meets the combustibility of The Raincoats" --Tim Burrows "The Plan are as compelling as they are inventive, reminiscent of some of the more inventive post-punkers but with a power and creativity that is very much their own" --Zoë Howe

Johnny's Disk Record is an independent jazz label run by the owner of jazz cafe Kaiunbashi No Johnny located in Rikuzentakata City in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. The legendary label released a string of albums of high quality but down-to-earth music, spanning from modern jazz, avant-garde jazz, to left-field pop. Gogo Sanji No Aki is an album by vocalist Mayumi Sonoda -- a jazz vocalist who looked up to Chris Connor and made her debut at a US Army camp at the age of 16 -- that was recorded with the help of Kichiro Sugino's Trio. Opening with the bilingual ballad "It's over", in which she sings in both English and Japanese, the album sees her covering standards that giants like Helen Merrill, Frank Sinatra, and Billie Holiday have popularized, while showcasing her vocal abilities that set her apart from her peers. BELP Crocodile LP
Zoë McPherson on Belp's Crocodile: "As a first listen it was 2AM, 46° in a village Portugal, in a convent, after a good night out. That moment struck me as being magic, the energy was perfect, we were laughing and relaxing amongst friends. That listen was pushing the magic further because of the surprises it has all along the journey. A first groaning. A simple rhythm. Soft realms. Noisy Round sounds. Type machine sounds, of a sampled hi-hat that never reveals, 'cut cut cut cut'. Just because it's fun to not reveal it. And put that fist cut part of the upcoming timber that is not 'yet' one. It's like if the drum pack was used the wrong way, which is a great way. Flipping. (= to flip something) Belp has this ability to bring the most horrible samples in front, and turn over your mind to enjoy what first sounds like 'horrible'. Facade. Crocodile is flipping it over. Rhythmically vibrating, ears are wide open, full attention. I'm into the non-repetition. Track Crocodile's call reminds me of the call in 'Klabb' by Deena Abdelwahed as well as within its playful change of tempo, of notes. Who cares? The album is like a randomly composed pack. It is not random. It's flipping something, and I like that disturbance, it's what I want to hear. It is alive, through composition, arrangements, falsely randomized, non-arranged, it is a trick; it is the drunk clown playing 'endless preparations for a ceremony' and 'catch'. Not bothering about anything reveals a deep understanding of music and of arts, a crafted album in details. It is years of listening, it is years of challenging one's ears, and putting it all together in this piece. It feels like the producer enjoys disturbing his own ears as much as other ppl's ears. Playful, energizing, demands attention. Challenging your ears somewhere where nothing is constant, lively. But overall let's not forget the real stuff, the bass and soulful part. The round groove is still there. Each track transmits Belp's open mindness to all type of music, whatever makes sense. It just all makes sense, it's a strong critic, it's a joke, it's emotion, it's playful, it's fucked up. All musical 'styles' are touched. Maybe it is a compilation? It is about rethinking "music", And not giving a fuck, although with still having an incredibly musical ear to all of it. Just listen, this might be one of your best lessons to stop giving a fuck about everything you do."

TELESCOPES, THE Exploding Head Syndrome LP
LP version. Exploding Head Syndrome is a snapping into consciousness, a synaptic charge of analog dissonance saturated through a complex undercurrent of pulsing minimalism, profound in its simplicity. A static haze of electronic distortion drifts in and out of lucidity to a sure propulsion of stone age repetition and heady bass vibrations, the momentum held on a thread of acoustic tension. As warm organs drone around the oscillating bones of enchanted melodies, an electric hive of enclosing guitars encircle Lawrie's trance induced visions, which hang suspended, fractured at the core, until completely enveloped by the gathering swarm. Welcome to the 11th studio album from The Telescopes, their third for Tapete. Consisting of eight new songs and incantations that form a series of sonic convulsions stretching the parameters of intuitive composition to the point of auditory illusion. Conceived in 1987, The Telescopes emerged as innovators in the field of melodic noise, becoming a crucial inspiration to a multitude of artists and listeners alike. The group has consisted of a revolving line-up centered around lead protagonist and founding instigator Stephen Lawrie. With the exception of "Until The End", Exploding Head Syndrome was created entirely by Lawrie himself while immersed in solitude deep in West Yorkshire. As the title suggests, this is the sound of a triggered mind reaching into the depths of his own inner turmoil on a personal quest for basic clarity. Whereas previous albums for Tapete have set a parallel course between song-based structures and freeform impressionism, Exploding Head Syndrome employs almost traditional song writing techniques to achieve a melodic swirl of simplistic refrains capable of lulling the listener into vast sonic dimensions. In the 1700s, William Herschel defined a telescope as an instrument through which a person may view "beyond the realm of natural vision". This is the mantra of The Telescopes. "Until The End" was co-written with Chris Plavidal (Stumptone) and is dedicated to the late Nevada Hill (Bludded Head). Exploding Head Syndrome is the name given by John M. S. Pearce in 1989 to a phenomena described by Robert Armstrong-Jones in 1920 as "snapping of the brain". It is a condition in which a person experiences unreal noises. The front sleeve holds an image of a blank sheet blowing in a breeze. A natural light phenomena occurring at the time the photograph was taken gives the illusion of a face.

PRITCHARD, BILL Midland Lullabies LP
LP version. Some time ago... "The J.D. Salinger of pop" was how Rolling Stone France described Bill Pritchard after the release of Mother Town Hall in 2016 (TR 320CD/LP), while the editor of Rolling Stone Germany made Mother Town Hall his "Album of The Week" -- just a few of the many accolades heaped on Pritchard's last record. Then there was the reissue of the now legendary album Parce Que, originally released in 1988, which Pritchard recorded with the much-missed Daniel Darc. It too was feted by -- among others -- Le Monde, Le Nouvel Obs, Télérama, Les Inrockuptibles, and Libération. And now... Midland Lullabies. This is the album Pritchard always wanted to make. Why?: Because he always wanted to make a mark as a "shabby suited crooner". Midland Lullabies is songs from the Midlands about continental issues bathed in a crooning, piano drenched style that Pritchard has been perfecting over two years. Complete with sumptuous, at times almost Brechtian strings. You'll visit "Iolanda", a tragic Parisian heroine who you could meet in the newsagents in Wednesbury or in a cemetery in Montmartre. "Hey Iolanda, eat your curly fries and celebrate!" On "Forever" you may ask yourself: "Are you in Shibuya, Hamburg or Birmingham or just inside Pritchard's head?" "The Last Temptation of Brussels"! Well, there is a plaque about the fight between two symbolist scribblers in Brussels. Is Pritchard recounting French poetic history or his own? Or is it all just '60s swagger? Whether Pritchard is riding "a scooter bathed in pink" or watching life changed by thoughtless intent, even if he listens as "Lucifer sings on an out of tune piano", he always keeps his dream of writing the perfect pop song alive. On "Thanks" Bill tells you about "photo shutters in black and white, an image of the door to the moon". Has he been staying in the Beat Hotel? Or rather The Waggon and Horses? Whatever! What a beautiful, plaintive, almost mystical song "Thanks" is. Produced again beautifully by Tim Bradshaw, Pritchard says that from the very outset he insisted on a stripped-down sound, utilizing Tim's brilliant, subtle and sympathetic piano interpretations of his songs. They know each other so well! All in all a case of less is more!

MOSS AND HANNAH-LOU, TREVOR La Ferme De Fontenaille CD
To coincide with the recent release of their new album on Maiden Voyage, Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou are reissuing their previous two albums. This the first of them was the first of their two self-released albums following on from Allotment Song (2010) and Quality First, Last & Forever! (2011). For La Ferme De Fontenaille, originally released in 2012, they found themselves without a label but having gained a wealth of experience both in the studio and from working with some of the finest independent labels in the country, it was time to take matters into their own hands. In April 2012 armed with a four-track cassette recorder and a few mics, they loaded up their loyal camper and headed for Pay de la Loire region of France. Over the next ten days they would roll tape in a little ex-cowshed in the shadow of a crumbling chateau, a far cry from Olympic Studios where their former incarnation as Indigo Moss had begun. From there they would bring home ten songs which would form the album La Ferme De Fontenaille released on their own label in 2012. "It's good to know our folk tradition continues are moving forward, sounding fresh, frank and relevant. Bert Jansch and Davey Graham would be pleased it's in safe hands." --Maverick Magazine, 2012

MOSS AND HANNAH-LOU, TREVOR Expatriot CD
The second of the Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou albums reissued on their own APRC label, Expatriot was the duo's fourth album following on from La Ferme De Fontenaille (APRC 001CD) and was originally released in October of 2015. This album was actually a co-release with Ethan Johns's Three Crows label. Having recently toured as support to Tori Amos in London and America during 2014 they were keen to make a new album promptly. Shortly before embarking on the tour they had done a run of shows with Ethan Johns (famous for producing albums by Laura Marling, Ryan Adams, The Kings Of Leon, and Paul McCartney). Bonding over damp distributor caps, click starter-motors, and faulty switches, they became firm friends. In February 2015, the duo travelled to Ethan's home studio in Wiltshire and began recording Expatriot.

SCOTT, SIMON Soundings CD
Soundings, Simon Scott's debut studio album for Touch finds the composer and sound ecologist using field recordings from various cities around the globe; modular synthesizer treatments; live strings and laptop electronics to create an album of transition and shifting time zones. The recordings were edited and composed in hotels rooms across the world as Scott was constantly on tour as the drummer for Slowdive, who successfully reformed in 2014. "Hodos", the album opener, begins with 85 mph Storm Barney recordings, ending with the fading sounds of bellbirds and cicadas recorded in Brisbane 2018. "I took a home recording I made of Storm Barney in Cambridge, listening to it on repeat when I was flying from continent to continent. I wanted this to be the starting point of the process of musically documenting how much travelling I was doing". This album was created from the US to Asia, South America to Europe and the Arctic Circle back to the UK via California. "Working in hotel rooms and on flights, listening to and editing the recordings I'd made from all of these distant cities formed the basis of the album. It's the soundtrack to four years of my life in flux with constant change, jet lag, excitement and the seeming perpetual motion of travelling". Scott has previously released the live album FloodLines in 2016 (TONE 053CD) and reissued Below Sea Level in 2017.

MORGAN, JAYE P. Jaye P. Morgan CD
Wewantsounds present a reissue of Jaye P. Morgan's 1976 ultra-rare private press, featuring the cream of the LA jazz and funk scene -- and one of David Foster's first productions -- is reissued on vinyl and CD. This lost classic recorded in LA at the legendary Sound City Studios is also the first full-blown production by David Foster two years before he co-produced Earth Wind & Fire's album I Am (1979) and went on to become one of the hottest producers on the scene. Featuring an extraordinary lineup of the best LA musicians including Harvey Mason, Ed Greene, Jay Graydon, Ray Parker Jr. Tower of Power, Ernie Watts, and many more, it's probably one of the most expensive private press ever produced and a delight of sophisticated Los Angeles funk featuring Jaye's superb soulful vocals. "This album is one of the first David ever produced and I know he was going all the way to the top" stated Jaye P. Morgan in an interview when asked about David Foster before adding: "I tried to make a soulful album and I loved David's work. We used the best musicians in the world." And they certainly did making this album one of the most expensive private presses in the world! This album was a bold move for the singer who had made her mark in the '50s and '60s as a singer and actress. Hiring Foster was a masterstroke as he hadn't yet produced any noticeable hit, but together they gathered the most impressive crew of musicians you could think of including two of Foster's closest associates, guitarist Jay Graydon and singer/arranger Bill Champlin (of Sons of Champlin's fame) and created the perfect white soul album with a breezy California feel. Featuring masterful renditions of such iconic songs as Stevie Wonder's songs as "Seems So Long" and Earth, Wind & Fire's "Can't Hide Love" (Foster, Champlin, and Graydon would soon pen "After The Love Has Gone" which would become a mega hit for Earth Wind & Fire two years later), together with a handpicked selection of originals, the sound alternates between up-tempo funk and soulful mid-tempo ballads, all served by Morgan's superb vocals. The missing link between Steely Dan and Earth, Wind & Fire, Jaye P. Morgan is pure, undiluted funk music and an essential LA classic.

Ogre makes their vinyl debut twice! With the audio now remastered and the artwork revamped for the 12" format, Ogre's fourth album of instantly recognizable, doom infected, '70s hard rock is now available in its analog glory. On the reverse, the band opted to pay homage to The Bags with their exclusive take on "Naked Lady" which was a favorite of theirs back in the early '90s. Pressed on orange vinyl; bonus 45 7" pressed on blue vinyl; Edition of 500.

ST 37 I'm Not Good 2LP
Yoshiwara Collective present ST 37's I'm Not Good, originally released in 2014, for the first time on vinyl. After a CD and digital release via Cleopatra Records, a limited cassette edition on Go Johnny Go, the long-awaited double vinyl edition is here. I'm Not Good claims ST 37. Truth be told, the band has never been better and this may very well be the jewel in their psychedelic crown. Weaving imaginative song craft with improvised jamming, the two famed threads have met in perfect bind. Croaking frogs, chopped-up cinematic loops, disturbing druggy cover versions, gentle moments, manic moments, a banjo, hooks more infectious than the plague and all-out sensory bliss, it's fucking brilliant. This is the culmination of three decades galactic exploration and the portal into this world of wonderment. The audio has been remastered, lyrics included, and artwork expanded. An exclusive version of "Marina" also replaces "Eroica Horns" making it that little bit more special. Pressed on monochrome vinyl, one black LP and white LP; comes in heavy gatefold sleeve.
