ARAB STRAP Philophobia 2LP
"Philophobia, Arab Strap's sophomore slam dunk released in the spring of 1998, begins with one of the most memorable opening lines in all of indie rock: 'It was the biggest cock you'd ever seen, but you've no idea where that cock has been.' So begins an album that, while picking up thematically where the duo's debut album The Week Never Starts Round Here left off, promises from its very first seconds a renewed sense of purpose: the narratives are more streamlined, the music more confident and mature. Gone are the sketches and doodles that unquestionably distinguished 1996's The Week Never Starts Round Here as the work of first timers, replaced with a consistent, almost conceptual, musical framework. On Philophobia, singer and lyricist Aidan Moffat's realism is more profane, gritty and poignant, while multi-instrumentalist Malcolm Middleton's honeyed orchestrations increasingly provide clinics in subtlety and restraint. Part of the appeal of Arab Strap's post-everything music is the way the group's songs make every listener feel like either a voyeur or a trusted confidante. The ever-present humanity in future sex advice columnist Moffat's first person tales of debauchery and regret is a through-line running through each of these frank and vivid songs: the same narrator who confesses to sniffing his fingers after a sexual encounter and boasts about the size of his penis also yearns to 'hug' a lover to death, finds himself crying on the bus, and wonders idly -- but hopefully -- whether or not he's truly in love with the woman he's just slept with. It is this duality, complemented by Middleton's imaginative and deeply sensitive accompaniment, that makes Philophobia one of the most original and most enduring front-to-back albums in the canon of modern indie rock; over two decades later, it still sounds warm to the touch."

JAN DUKES DE GREY Sorcerers LP
Alternative Fox presents a reissue of Jan Dukes De Grey's Sorcerers, originally issued in 1969. Sorcerers is the group's debut, recorded when Jan Dukes de Grey were still the duo of multi-instrumentalists Derek Noy, the band's songwriter and lead vocalist, and Michael Bairstow. The 18 songs of the album, recorded in October 1969, show within a pure folk style the subtle use of multiple instruments like guitars, woodwinds, brass, keyboards, and percussion. Every song conjures up its own time and place, from the quiet pastoral delights of "28th June, Village Song" to the urban pulse of "City After 3:00 AM," the homage to the vast expanses of an idealized "Texas," and the Eastern promise of "Turkish Time." Moods shift dramatically from the anger-drenched "M.S.S." to the medieval musings of "Dragons" and the wonder of a "Butterfly." One of the most brilliant acoustic experiments of folk-psych-prog rock ever.

The 1962 Blue Note release The Cat Walk was a critical success; most songs were written by pianist Duke Pearson, who also makes a crucial musical contribution, along with understated drummer Philly Joe Jones, relaxed strolling bass from Laymon Jackson, and rousing sax from longstanding collaborator, Pepper Adams.

ANDERSON, RUTH Here LP
Jennifer Lucy Allan's Arc Light Editions releases Here, the debut album by little known electronic and tape music composer Ruth Anderson (1928-2019) who died just before she was able to see her first solo release out in the world. Here reinserts Ruth Anderson as a trailblazer in the history of electronic music in the USA. Here gathers microtonal electronics, drone, and meditative long-form works and a mischievous plunderphonic collage into an album that is playful, meditative, and bold in its minimalist approach to sound. In an article written by her partner, the composer Annea Lockwood, Ruth describes her music "evolved from an understanding of sound as energy which affects one's state of being. [These are] pieces intended to further wholeness of self and unity with others." "Pregnant Dream" is a collaboration with poet May Swenson. "Points" is constructed from pure sine waves, a veil of microtonal sound intended as a healing piece that generates quiet energy. "So What" hovers in electroacoustic space, and crescendos in oscillations and phasing. The playful proto-plunderphonics of "SUM (State of the Union Message)" is constructed from sounds sampled from TV commercials, made one January while Anderson was waiting for a studio to become free, offers tongue-in-cheek resistance to politics and communication as pertinent today as then. Her intention with "SUM" became "to say as little, and by omission, as much as the President (Nixon) would in his address." The restful and meditative "I Come Out Of Your Sleep", constructed from the speech vowels in Louise Bogan's poem "Little Lobelia", is a deeply calming and mindful piece. Anderson intended the shape of the vowels to become breathy melodic arcs and tones, which becomes the core of a stylized meditation. Sleeve notes by Louise Gray. Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi.Anderson was born in Montana in 1928, and originally trained as a flautist and composer studying with Darius Milhaud and Nadia Boulanger in Paris. She was the first woman to be admitted to Princeton University Graduate School in the early 1960s. She also worked as an orchestrator for NBC-TV and the Lincoln Center Theater production of Annie Get Your Gun with Ethel Merman (1966). After joining the faculty of Hunter College, CUNY, in 1966, she created the Hunter College Electronic Music Studio, one of the first electronic music studios in the USA to be founded and directed by a woman. She was engaged in studies of psychoacoustics, Zen Buddhism, and was a committed teacher. She retired from Hunter College in 1989. Ruth Anderson died on November 29th, 2019, aged 91, just after approving test pressings for Here.

BLUTCH La Cite Des Etoiles 12"
The long-standing and hugely respected label and events company Astropolis welcome Blutch for a new single, La Cite Des Etoiles, that comes ahead of his debut album on this same label later in 2020, and includes a remix from Michael Mayer. Blutch has had numerous releases on the likes of Nowadays, Dance Around 88, and De?licieuse Musique, has collaborated with heavyweights like Terrence Parker and Red Rack'em and has received support from NTS and Radio 1. He is a respected talent in France and deals in classy electronica that blurs the lines between dream states and reality, and the forthcoming album will be presented as a gripping audiovisual tale with the help of video maker Romain Navier. First up here is expressive techno masterpiece "Beau Rivage" which soars on supple synth lines and elastic drum programming. It's elegant stuff awash with melodic beauty and emotion. Single "Compe?tition," is another excellently mature and musical track with symphonic synths reaching to the heavens and colorful arps lighting up the uplifting grooves. "2014" is driven by vast, pounding, and cavernous drums, with distant vocal harmonies bring an angelic feel to the celestial synths and chords. The final original is the brilliant "La Cite? Des Etoiles," which is layered up with pixelated leads, soft chords, and found sound percussion samples that fire every synapse. Remixing is Kompakt label boss and one of the most revered names in electronic music, Michael Mayer. He flips "La Cite? Des Etoiles" into deeply-rooted techno that is riddled with claps and synth lines that bright real light.

MUNK, JONAS Minimum Resistance LP
LP version. Minimum Resistance is Jonas Munk's most abstract and minimalist album to date, ten ambient pieces based on guitars -- often processed into soft, slow billows of sound. There's a rare aesthetic clarity in these pieces, allowing each sonic component to breathe and resonate. Here Munk works with a restrained sonic palette and it's an album which demands patience from the listener. Yet, in its bold simplicity, it carries enough emotional weight to be deeply rewarding. It's an immersive album, an invitation for the listener to sink deep into a series of mesmerizing, but peculiarly undefined, moods. Minimum Resistance celebrates slowness, reclusiveness and simplicity. There's hardly anything ground-breaking about this kind of music, but rarely does it flow as naturally and effortless as on this set. It's clear this is the work of someone who has been refining his craft over the course of two decades. Besides producing his own music, Jonas Munk also works as a recording and mastering engineer, and has slowly but surely established his own sonic signature. It's the kind of work where subtle gradual changes and minuscule textural details has a tremendous impact on the listener.

EMPIRE LINE, THE The Nature Of Your Oppression Is The Aesthetic Of Our Anger 12"
The Empire Line unleash their demons on The Nature Of Your Oppression Is The Aesthetic Of Our Anger. When Jonas Rönnberg (aka Varg), Christian Stadsgaard (part of the Danish duo Damien Dubrovnik, co-founder of Posh Isolation), and noise artist Isak Hansen combine their musical vision, the result is sure to be radical. Claiming that "the nature of your oppression is the aesthetic of our anger" right away in the title, the four-track EP sounds like it was recorded straight from a sweaty basement. Combining cascading rave tropes with noise, anger, and punk, this release merges different underground currents. The result is a flamboyant, nevertheless harsh sound collage.

CAVINI, VICTOR Japan LP
Be With Records present a reissue of Victor Cavini's Japan, originally released in 1983. The first Be With foray into the archives of revered German library institution Selected Sound is one of Be With's favorites on the label. Rare and sought-after for many years now, this is one of those cult library LPs that never turn up. With Daibutsu the giant Buddha of Kamakura's presence gracing the hefty front cover, this is a record bursting with dope samples for adventurous producers: it's koto-funk madness! Victor Cavini was the library music pseudonym of prolific German composer and musician Gerhard Trede. He was known for exploring instruments and styles from around the world (he played over 50 different instruments himself) and Japan is his collection of 14 musical sketches painted with traditional Japanese wind and string instruments. These are the sounds of traditional Japanese folk music re-interpreted through Western ears, with the occasional contemporary twist. Contemporary for 1983, of course. These "Pictures Of Japan" are hypnotic, sometimes frantic, but always beautiful. The first twelve tracks offer airy explorations of koto and flute, with other strings and percussion being added and then given their own space. Indeed "Pictures Of Japan XII" is just drums. And then "Pictures Of Japan XIII" seems to come out of nowhere. But the subtle sleaze of its full band sound still doesn't quite prepare you for the towering climax of "Pictures Of Japan XIV". This is Japan's undoubted standout piece, completely and wonderfully at odds with the rest of the album. It's the reason this has become such a must-have record. It keeps the traditional Japanese instruments but combines them with shuffling funk breaks, electric bass high in the mix and a Godzilla-sized psychedelic fuzz guitar sound that might actually be a traditional reed flute pushed to its limits. Recalling both Rino de Filippi's 1973 album Oriente Oggi (CNLP 042LP) and Giancarlo Barigozzi's Oriente also from 1973, the track's a real head-nod groove for b-boys and b-girls alike that sounds straight out of a late-70s Yakuza film. Indeed, if you were told The RZA or Onra had cooked this up in the lab this century, you'd be convinced. It's crazy that this dates from 1983. Audio remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. Richard Robinson has handled the careful restoration of the original Selected Sound sleeve.

KINEMATIK Murur al-Kiram LP
Portland and Beirut rub shoulders again as Beacon Sound and Ruptured reveal their second co-release, the new album by Lebanese ensemble Kinematik entitled Murur al-Kiram. Kinematik hails from the mountain village of Reyfoun. Formed in the summer of 2014, they recorded their debut album Ala' in the spring of 2017 and released it on Ruptured (RPTD 017CD/LP). The band is known for the elaborate visual setup of its live shows and has collaborated with a variety of different artists over the years in an effort to carefully craft each of its performances. Kinematik has toured extensively in Lebanon and Europe, re-scored Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1930's classic film Vampyr for the the 23rd European Film Festival in Beirut, and contributed soundtrack pieces for Lebanese filmmakers Ghassan Salhab's Une Rose Ouverte (2019) and Sarah Kaskas' Underdown. Murur al-Kiram uses electronics, intricate double-drumming, guitar, and bass to construct ambient soundscapes and hypnotic, propulsive rhythms -- conjuring the ghosts of a diminishing future as well as an unresolved past. Subtle in both angst and joy, the album celebrates small victories in the face of great defeats, echoing the band's conflicted mindset towards life in their country and community. The record was recorded over a period of two months, and features Teddy Tawil joining the band as second drummer. Whereas Ala' saw Kinematik's four core musicians confining themselves to one instrument and/or role within the overall sonic construct of the band, these new compositions see each musician playing and equally at ease with several instruments, adding intensity, cohesiveness, and a sense of fluidity to the proceedings. The intent was to make a record that would sound like a single traveling shot, beginning with the musicians' childhood in their hometown, through their adult lives weighted down by the corruption and theft endemic to the Lebanese political system, until they are buried back in their place of birth. The salutary presence of Sary (newborn son of synth player Rudy Ghafari) that became the "raison d'être" of the record. Murur al-Kiram is the story of an important chapter in the band's history, one marked by uncertainty and hesitation, yet solid and vibrant in spite of the latter. With the recent mass protests against dire, still unresolved social conditions, a vision of a democratic and post-sectarian Lebanon has come into view. Recorded by Fadi Tabbal at Tunefork Studios in Beirut. Includes download code; Edition of 300.

TURNER, BIG JOE The Boss Of The Blues: The Complete Mono and Stereo Recordings, Recorded at Carnegie Hall 1956 2CD
"Seriously, one of the best blues albums of all time. masterfully tight, unpretentious and crazily swinging album. One of the first conceptualized blues records ever recorded. Recorded on two consecutive days in March 1956. Original mono album released September 1956. Turner never sounded better. Album reissue producer and liner notes: Colin Escott. Eco-pack with extensive booklet. When Big Joe Turner recorded the songs for Boss Of The Blues on two consecutive days in a New York studio in 1956, he could already look back on several stages of an extremely successful career. Around the mid-1930s, Turner began working with one of the stars of boogie woogie, pianist Pete Johnson from Kansas City. Both were involved in the legendary 1938 show produced by John Hammond Sr. at New York's Carnegie Hall, the 'Spirituals to Swing' concert. In 1951 Ahmet Ertegun signed Turner to his young Atlantic label. Over the next few years, Big Joe Turner recorded his most successful singles and became an Atlantic bestseller with a series of major hits in the R&B charts. In March 1956, however, history was written. Boss Of The Blues was one of the first blues concept albums (almost all other LPs of that day were compilations of previously released singles). Atlantic engaged musicians from the Count Basie community (plus their arranger). The music is anything but nostalgia. With exquisite musicians he created one of the best blues/jazz albums of all times with Big Joe Turner at the peak of his vocal expressiveness."

44TH MOVE Broken/Dan Shake Remix 12"
The 44th Move occurred during the six-match chess battle between Deep Blue (IBM) vs Kasparov (Grandmaster) in 1996/97. The 44th Move, per se, represents the moment when a human being (Kasparov) realized he was facing a superior intellect (Deep Blue). The 44th Move was a glitch... The 44th Move is the anonymous combination of two established creative minds adding bugs to the source code of jazz. From the word go "Broken" is unquestionably crafted by two skilled musicians. Intricate drums, twinkling melodies, and a sultry bassline generate a thoughtful composition comprising multiple interlocking layers and compelling emotion. On the flip, Dan Shake packs more punch with a house remix complete with purposeful kick drums, however it still retains the original's charm by incorporating all of its classy elements.

WHITE HEAVEN Out LP
White Heaven's debut album Out is one of the greatest psychedelic rock albums ever recorded. First released in 1991 by Tokyo's P.S.F. Records and pressed in an edition of 500 copies the original LP has become a holy grail in underground circles, with only a scant few copies ever making it outside of Japan. Built on the chemistry between You Ishihara's lysergic lyricism and the blistering leads of one of Japan's undisputed guitar gods Michio Kurihara, Out is an absolute classic. It is one of the few albums to successfully join a deep love of classic rock n' roll with the rapturous energy of punk and openness of the avant-garde. Each song creates its own world, raising dynamic structures that defy categorization. Meticulously re-mastered by the artists this new edition is the album in its clearest, most powerful form. Cut at the legendary Bernie Grundman studios and pressed at RTI it is now available on vinyl for the first time in almost 30 years. Black Editions presents Out in its definitive edition. Deluxe LP edition, Heavy tip-on jacket and tri-panel insert printed on black paper with metallic gold ink. Vinyl mastering by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman, high quality pressing at RTI."What happens if you want to make a sound like Eric Clapton on 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps,' or Ritchie Blackmore on Made in Japan -- two early influences Kurihara mentions in particular -- but you've never been in a recording studio before? What happens if you want to sing like Marc Bolan or Robert Plant -- or even Lou Reed and Tom Verlaine -- but you've never been on a stage before? Listen to what happened on Out: a wide knowledge and love of classic rock sounds fused to a freedom of expression based not only on punk, but on avant-garde experimentalism. It isn't that these young players had chops like that at the time. But neither did they need them to hit heightened moments of what I can only describe as rock rapture." --Damon Krukowski

KLUSTER Zwei Osterei LP
Restocked; vinyl version. Zwei Osterei is the second half of a recording session which took place on a single day in November 1970. Klopfzeichen is the first part. Yet the uncompromising Zwei Osterei surpasses the earlier Klopfzeichen album by some distance in terms of its harsh noisiness and near brutal sonic attacks. Everything that was left of the revolutionary verve of the late 1960s seems to have been distilled into this music with a burning glass: aesthetic destruction to liberate the mind and ears for utopian designs; the definitive coalescence of art and pop into something completely new; unbridled musical freedom, coupled with a love of noise. Zwei Osterei is all of this. How unsettling Kluster's music must have been for the professional avant-garde of the period (music journalists, critics etc.). Kluster turned pretty much everything associated with so-called progressive pop music on its head. No song structure, no rhythm, little more than muffled pulsation. No heroic poses, no transfigured gestures on stage. This attitude, or rather anti-attitude is particularly in evidence on track two of Zwei Osterei. Still no electronic instruments, just guitar, drums and non-musical sonic sources as Kluster unleash a sound spectacle which anticipates the industrial artists who emerged some years later. Conny Plank played a pivotal role as sound engineer with the relatively limited studio equipment available to him. His meticulous reading of the band's intentions led to the creation of pure, electroacoustic music -- loud, violent, real-time improvisation. Shrill feedback, tape echo loops and layers of sonic cascades dominate this section of the album. This was no longer psychedelic, nor "progressive." It was more like sonic warfare, waged against all musical categories and conventions. Many a listener posed the rather helpless question "What is that supposed to be??... art? Music? A happening?" According to statements made by the band, none of the above. It was simply Kluster. A lofty claim which Zwei Osterei fulfills one hundred percent. Translated, the statement is nothing more nor less than a challenge to ignore the accumulated theory of art and music, with all the risks and side effects this entails. Back in 1970, Kluster could not have known that they were setting in motion a process which would endure until the present day. But they no doubt hoped as much.

LE CROQUE/HRRSN Melancholia EP 12"
As a long-time friend of the Connected label, Le Croque makes his debut with Melancholia EP, a superb single that comes with a remix from Themba. At the forefront of the ever-growing Greek Afro-house scene and part of the Madorasindahouse team, Le Croque has also released on Open Bar Music and King Street, and DJed alongside such legends as Black Coffee, Adam Port and &Me. For this release he teams up with Berlin-via-Munich vocalist HRRSN who came to electronic music from soul and R&B and has released on such labels as Stil Vor Talent, Suol, and Noir Music. This latest partnership leads to a beautiful deep slice of electronic hypnosis on "Melancholia." The track has a driving rhythm that is sparse and simple, with lush keyboard refrains and vocals soaring in the drop. It is the sort of majestic and melodic offering that will make for a fantastic high point in any set, while the dub keeps things even deeper for more intimate moments. Remixer Themba has swiftly risen to prominence over the last few years and is at the forefront of the South African house scene. Here, he delivers a sharp and striding groove that is joined by stabbing bass, with fading, string-like notes, and dubbed vocal refrains taking things to another level as HRRSN comes into the spotlight and delivers a message from the heart. This is a subtle but celebratory house package packed with plenty of emotion.

INLAND Stream-State 4x12"
British DJ and producer Inland (Ed Davenport) has compiled and mixed Stream-State, his biggest project to date, bringing together over 20 artists in a DJ-ready compilation of colorful, diverse modern techno on his label Counterchange. Complete with a 90-minute continuous mix by Inland himself, the project celebrates over 15 years behind the decks and cements Davenport's reputation not only as a tireless force in the studio, but as a trusted selector and curator of contemporary club music. Spanning deep IDM-rooted studies, lush chord-driven euphoria, powerful modernist workouts and tough house-groove jackers, Davenport weaves an addictive mix full of character and his precision mixing style. From veterans and heroes like DJ Skull, Efdemin, Joel Mull, Boddika, Peter Van Hoesen, and Mark Broom (alongside Discrete Circuit), to a new echelon of up-and-coming talent like Rhyw, Sophia Saze, Jamaica Suk, Johanna Knutsson, Aiken, DJ Sodeyama, Perm, and Felix Fleer, there's an underlying thread of shimmering production values and close attention to detail in every track. Inland also selected debuts from Berlin based artists Fred Mann and Arbitrage, and welcomes back BNJMN, P. Lopez, and Distant Echoes to the label. Stream-State is Inland's celebration of the DJ mix/compilation format. Enamored with UK dance music culture in the mid-90s, the burning, illicit energy of early rave mixtapes left a huge impression. Mystical bootlegs recorded at mass gatherings in fields or late-night Radio One transmissions captured on cassette -- their eternal spirit was absorbed and cherished. Now more than two decades later, Davenport has channeled that fascination into this weighty collector's item and a captivating continuous mix. All 22 tracks included are new and original productions made by some of Inland's favorite artists and colleagues. A network and a community -- complied and presented by an artist who continues to demonstrate his longevity and unique voice in the scene. 4x12" LP set; two printed inserts featuring artwork by Brooklyn based painter Erik Minter; download card including four bonus tracks and continuous DJ mix by Inland.

CHILDISH AND THE CHATHAM SINGERS, WILD BILLY Kings of the Medway Delta CD
"This album follows CTMF's Last Punk Standing LP and is something of a left turn. What prompted the decision to make a blues album? I've been making blues recordings since the early 1980s. We've made a few Chatham Singers LPs over the years and I've been meaning to record another and just got round to it. I'm still making regular CTMF recordings at the same sessions it's just the fun of working with different sounds. I was listening to Slim Harpo ('Got Love If You Want It') in a cafe, Jim form Ranscombe Studios was having a coffee and I said 'this is a great song, we should try to get that echo chamber going.' Next day he said he'd been messing with it and I said 'right, let's record!' How does this differ from the previous two Chatham Singers albums? Less country, no poetry, more developed sound, otherwise the same. It features fantastic blues harp playing by guest player Jim Riley, tell us a bit about him. Jim plays with us on the other LPs as well, I just wanted to highlight that a bit on this LP. I've known Jim since '77 when he was in the local R&B group, Wipeout, and I was in the local punk outfit The Pop Rivets. we played together a few times and became pals back then. Jim now runs the local studio where we record with my drum kit from Thee Mighty Caesars. You've really captured that authentic gritty urban blues sound. Gearheads will want to know what guitars and amps you used? My same old Selmer Truevoice guitar 15 amp I've used since the Milkshakes, a 15 Selmer bass combo (15 quid from Rochester flea market. A '59 Jazzmaster guitar and an old Hagstrom bass that Thee Headcoats got on the cheap in Seattle What do you think those other Kent-born musicians, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger would make of the album and how does it compare to their work? We got the sound of that Chess Studios echo chamber, so I guess they'd be pretty envious. I love the Rolling Stones when they were R&B fans, not so much after the rock set in."

THOMPSON, LINVAL Trojan Dancehall Albums Collection 2CD
"At the close of the 1970s, a new, strident style of reggae developed that by the close of the year had supplanted the roots sound, continuing to dominate Jamaica's musical landscape through to the mid-Eighties: dancehall. Few producers embraced the genre with more skill than Linval Thompson, who between 1982 and 1983 delivered four superb dancehall collections to Trojan Records, with each showcasing a major talent of the era. All but one of this quartet of LPs appear on CD for the first time in the UK, with Tristan Palma's Settle Down Girl making its full digital debut. The 2CD set is further bolstered by four Linval Thompson-produced bonus tracks, ensuring a musical feast for fans of the original dancehall sound."

ECCLES & THE DYNAMITES, CLANCY Freedom / Fire Corner 2CD
"The dawning of the rock steady sound, late in 1966, eliminated the need for record producers to employ horn sections, a consequence of which was to significantly reduce studio costs. The development enabled a new generation of young, dynamic music makers to make a mark upon Jamaica's recording industry and of these, few proved more successful or influential than Clancy Eccles. By the late Sixties, Eccles had become firmly established as one of the island's premiere producers, having been a pivotal figure in the development of reggae during the latter half of 1968. The following year he scored his biggest hit, the rambunctious 'Fattie Fattie', which sold in huge amounts both at home and the UK, where a chart placing for the disc was only denied by the lack of recognition of sales from Jamaican music retailers. The single's popularity prompted Trojan Records to issue Eccles's debut long-player, Freedom, which gathered the best of his self-produced recordings as a singer. The album's release coincided with a second LP of his work that showcased his most recent instrumental productions with top session crew, the Dynamites, along with a trio of tracks featuring pioneering DJ toaster, King Stitt, whose ground-breaking hit, 'Fire Corner', provided the collection's title. Both of these seminal boss reggae sets feature on this essential 2CD compilation, which is further enhanced by 13 additional vocal sides from the late Sixties along with the remaining recorded works of both King Stitt and the Dynamites, from 1969: the year reggae went outernational."

FOREST DRIVE WEST Parallel Space EP 12"
Forest Drive West delivers the Parallel Space EP via Copenhagen's Echocord, backed with a remix from Conforce. London's Forest Drive West has gained widespread recognition as a purveyor of raw and emotive techno over the past few years, releasing material on the likes of Livity Sound, Hidden Hawaii, Neighbourhood, and Whities. Here though see him returning to Echocord following his recent remix of Babe Roots on the imprint earlier this year. "Creation Dub" leads, fusing echoing dub chords and off-kilter drums with cavernous atmospherics and pulsating low-end tones before "Drift" edges into darker territories with murky synth textures, glitched-out percussion, and tension building drones creating a hypnotic and subtly nuanced six-and-a-half minutes. Title-track "Parallel Space" then opens the B-side, bring the rhythmic aspects into the spotlight this time as bumpy broken drums, a rounded sub line and oscillating percussion ebb and flow amongst hazy pads, fluttering echoes and expansive reverbs. Conforce's take on "Parallel Space" rounds out the package next and the Delsin regular delivers a typically classy interpretation with choppy bass stabs dynamically driving the composition as snippets of the original's ethereal textures and spiraling percussion are weaved within.

BARBIERI, CATERINA Ecstatic Computation LP
2020 repressing. Caterina Barbieri is an Italian composer who explores themes related to machine intelligence and object-oriented perception in sound through a focus on minimalism. Following 2017's acclaimed double-LP Patterns Of Consciousness (IMPREC 449LP), Ecstatic Computation is the new full-length LP by Caterina Barbieri. The album revolves around the creative use of complex sequencing techniques and pattern-based operations to explore the artefacts of human perception and memory processes by ultimately inducing a sense of ecstasy and contemplation. Computation is turned from being a formal, automatic writing technique into a creative, psychedelic practice to generate temporal hallucinations. A state of trance and wonder where the perception of time is distorted and challenged. Equally nervous and ecstatic, the fast permutation of patterns can create a state where time stands still whilst simultaneously being in motion. Is this propulsive music moving forward or backward? As long as the perception of the present is constantly enhanced and refreshed in an endless sense of loss, re-discovery and the search for self-orientation this question lies mute aside the thrilling and perplexing moment of the matter at hand. Vocals on "Arrows Of Time" performed by Annie Gårlid and Evelyn Saylor; recorded by Stefano Tucci at Failsafe Studio. Artwork by Ruben Spini. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering.

ELECTRIC INDIGO Ferrum 2LP
Ferrum is a large-scale exploration of inharmonic timbres, oscillating between brutal grinding textures and intricate percussive singularities, created by digitally transforming recordings of various metallic objects. Susanne Kirchmayr's new album takes a close personal look at the spectral richness of iron and other metals, in various shapes and sizes, recorded, processed, and arranged to a carefully curated selection of musical miniatures. Some of the results are an obvious nod to her Electric Indigo DJ alias, music that could be played on the dancefloor of an alien cargo ship, both highly familiar and foreign at the same time. Others offer almost steady-state like meditative qualities, vibrations from deep within, on a sub atomic level, full of light and motion on the tiniest possible scale. The limitation in material opens up a seemingly unlimited world of colors and rhythms, oscillating, resonating, and highly immersive. Mastered by Rashad Becker. Artwork by Tina Frank.

GUFFOND, JASMINE Microphone Permission LP
Editions Mego release the new album by Australian producer Jasmine Guffond. Developed over a two-year period, Microphone Permission is an unsettling musical journey utilizing contemporary tools of communication to display Guffond's ongoing research into online surveillance and sound as a method of investigation. Source material on Microphone Permission are from various projects Guffond has been working on; a commission to sonify the data of the city of Melbourne, a dance performance about the future sounds of an extinct forest, an installation that sonifies Twitter meta data in real time, a job as a composer for a theater work about music and feminism by five young female identifying performers in Western Sydney and a site specific installation at the Linachtalsperre dam that employed the harmonic frequencies of electric currents. The results are a stark, brooding, disorientating journey into a paranoid musical field that sits somewhere between ambient club music and a dystopian soundtrack. Elements of techno, classical music, and sound art form a dark intriguing masterwork that questions the nature of invasive, algorithmic, and computational listening practices. For example, Microphone Permission refers to the consent we routinely give when installing various apps onto our smart devices. Inspired by a 2018 scandal in which fans of Spain's most popular soccer team were effectively turned into unwitting spies by granting the La Liga application microphone permission. No matter which make or model, all smart devices are built with a microphone that is by default, forever listening. Listening in these situations often takes on an algorithmic form that enables tech developers to bypass public response to what is intuitively considered invasive practice, that is, traditional modes of eavesdropping such as using the microphone to listen and record audio. Composed, recorded, and produced by Jasmine Guffond. Image by Ilan Katin; layout by Nik Void.

BIG BLOOD Do You Wanna Have a Skeleton Dream? LP
"Wow! Great new LP by the full trio version of Maine's Big Blood. Colleen, Caleb, and Quinnisa are all present and accounted for at every turn on this one! Unlike their last LP, The Daughter's Union (FTR 459LP, 2019) (which seemed like some sort of experiment involving glam-rock-readymades), Do You Wanna? is awash with crazily re-imagined girl group dynamics. Some of these tight-sparkly-dress recreations have a savage teenage authority, but others wiggle more like dreams stolen from the nodes of Julee Cruise, Angelo Badalamenti, or David Lynch. Sometimes there are style-ghosts standing in all the expected places, but none of them are behaving the way we'd expect. But I do not wish to paint the sound here as monochromatic. There are many of Big Blood's classic elements employed with trademark pluck -- witchy patches recalling early Spires That in the Sunset Rise, small balloons filled with glitter & gas-pulses, bubbling pools of pure psychedelic confusion. But the strange sophistication of children wearing Diana Ross masks is something new. And it's such a mesmerizing vision, I find myself paying extra attention to it. But then again, that's just the surface. The lyrics here are of a piece with Big Blood's patented approach of creating surrealist poetry in a rural and arrestingly original American style. Quinissa's newly rampant influence seems to be grounding some of the lyrical imagery in more quotidian scenes ('Insecure Kids,' etc.), but with the parental examples she's afforded on a daily basis, this may just be a phase. But whatever else it is, Do You Wanna? is another amazing spin from Big Blood. And there's even a poster you can pin on your memory board. Talk about your win/win situations!" --Byron Coley, 2020

RAMLEH The Great Unlearning 2CD
Double-CD version of the critically acclaimed The Great Unlearning album, originally released in mid-2019 as a double-LP by Egyptian label Nashazphone (NP 030LP). This release saw Gary and Anthony not only reunited with Stuart Dennison, Martyn Watts, and Philip Best, but also collaborating with Philip's wife (and Consumer Electronics partner) Sarah Froelich and delivering perhaps their most surprising and immediate work to date. Drawing from post-punk, ravaged psychedelia, raw electronics and, of course, the group's own background as purveyors of music both intense and uncompromising, The Great Unlearning is their most accomplished work yet. This is the culmination of where all their ideas have been heading over the years and undoubtedly proves Ramleh to be completely on top of their game. Packaged in a six-panel sleeve.

DAVIS, MILES Miles In Tokyo: Miles Davis Live In Concert (Translucent Red Vinyl) LP
"Pressed on translucent red vinyl. Miles Davis was on the verge of forming one of his most acclaimed ensembles in 1964. It was this year that he travelled to perform in Japan for the first time, bringing with him 3/4ths of the musicians that would form his famed 'second great quartet'; Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on double bass, and Tony Williams on drums. In addition the jazz legend brought along saxophonist Sam Rivers to replace the recently exited George Coleman, who was primarily a free jazz musician, but had a long and extensive background in bebop. Davis and Rivers never developed any major chemistry between each other during the trip, and frequently found their distinct styles (Davis' cool and subdued traditional bop style contrasting with Rivers' wild but controlled avant-garde wandering) frequently clashing (or perhaps duelling) in their performances. But for all Davis and Rivers might not have meshed together, the crowd at Tokyo's Kohseinenkin Hall enjoyed it immensely. Davis himself reserved a special kind of respect and admiration for his Japanese audience as well, temporarily dropping his habit of exiting the stage during his fellow musicians' solos. Rivers would ultimately be dismissed from the group at the end of their trip, leading to the arrival of Wayne Shorter, and the inception of the 'second great quartet.' The partnership of Miles Davis and Sam Rivers may have been short-lived, but it did produce the live album Miles In Tokyo nearly five years later. The record is a rare jewel in Miles Davis' discography, featuring high-energy live versions of songs by Rodgers & Hart, Cole Porter, and Richard Carpenter, as well as a restlessly fast-paced take on the Davis staple 'So What'. This collection has previously only been available in Japan, but is now presented on vinyl for the first time in America by Get On Down. Miles In Tokyo is a must-have for completionists of free jazz, bop, and avant-garde alike."

DADAMAH This Is Not A Dream 2LP
"This Is Not a Dream is a double album collection of every song released by the legendary Dunedin, New Zealand quartet Dadamah, including the This Is Not A Dream LP, and their three 7-inch singles and one unique compilation track. Grapefruit's release is a thirteen-song collection with the full album on one LP and all the 7-inch and compilation tracks on the other. Inspired by the Kranky label's CD compilation of Dadamah's existing catalog in 1994, this vinyl version includes two additional songs from a posthumously released 7-inch and it's been sequenced and designed by the band. Before Dadamah, Peter Stapleton played in The Terminals, Vacuum and The Victor Dimisich Band as well as The Pin Group with guitarist Roy Montgomery. Singer Kim Pieters and organ / synth player Janine Stagg had never been in a band before Dadamah. Dadamah only played live three times, devoting their efforts to four-track recording. Nevertheless, word managed to get out about the band and they were asked to contribute to the 1991 Drag City single 'I Hear the Devil Calling Me' which featured twelve songs hovering around one minute each by a who's who of the then current New Zealand underground music scene. They released their only album in 1992. Jay Hinman (currently of Dynamite Hemorrhage) noted Dadamah's solitary place in the NZ underground in his Superdope fanzine: 'Dead C. might blare and scrape, the Terminals might twist and wind, but Dadamah positively shimmer with beautifully earthy lo-fi Velvets / Ubu sound.' Limited edition singles on the Seattle-based Majora label followed the LP, earning Dadamah praise as 'one of the most overwhelmingly great exponents of layer-shifting drone-on master-rock' in the Forced Exposure catalog. Roy Montgomery's soaring droning guitars were offset by Janine Stagg's stabbing organ and gurgling moog synths, and Kim Pieter's vocals ebbed and flowed, somehow evoking Patti Smith, Ian Curtis, and David Thomas simultaneously. After Dadamah, Roy Montgomery went on to form Dissolve and Hash Jar Tempo as well as maintaining his eclectic solo career which continues to feature intense collaborations like those found in Dadamah (find other Roy Montgomery titles on Grapefruit). Peter Stapleton and Kim Pieters formed Flies Inside The Sun and Stapleton continued his work with The Terminals and his independent label Metonymic which released tons of experimental and underground New Zealand music through 2009."

VATICAN SHADOW Opium Crop Airstrikes LP
Declassified militarist ambience from Vatican Shadow, finding Dominik Fernow (Prurient) donning his desert fatigues for a mesmerizing follow-up to his technoid outings with Ostgut Ton and Ancient Methods. It's also the last in a series of first-time vinyl editions of previously tape-only releases. "Opium Crop" makes a return to what could be termed a vintage Vatican Shadow sound, steeped in nods to Muslimgauze and modern geopolitics and fringed with an aura of clammy, atmospheric terror. The title piece pushes off across the front with a sort of stately, waltzing rhythm and druggy synth pads recalling John Foxx and DJ Screw as much as Bryn Jones. "Hellfire Hidden Tribes" sinks into the B-side with lagging Dabke rhythm embedded in oily black backdrops, occasionally lit up with vaporous synth stabs mirroring the arc and flash of distant artillery, and leading to an exquisite ambient devotional, "Loyal To The Deceased". Unmissable. Completely new artwork by Dominick Fernow. Mastered and cut at Dubplates & Mastering Berlin. Limited edition pressing.

GOLEM MECANIQUE Nona, Decima et Morta LP
"In what distant deeps or skies Burnt the fire of thine eyes On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand dare seize the fire?" --W. BlakeStephen O'Malley on the release (Paris, January 2020):"My first encounter with Karen Jebane (aka Golem Mecanique) was in the context of Echoés above the village of Le Saix in Haut-Ales, in 2016. This tremendous location runs along a deep river canyon with a long cliff on one side and a small mountainside slope on the other. Importantly, and uniquely, some mad acoustician geniuses have built massive concrete amplified horns into the hillside to project sound against the cliff, activating the landscape's natural resonance and delay patterns. The Echoés organizers exploit this system once per year, in a type of private weekend. People arrive for a few evenings of music and enjoy the summer and loosen their minds a bit. I was to be performing later in the night (under the stars, one of my most memorable and moving experiences with music ever), but Karen began her performance directly at sunset, the color saturating the sky and shadows growing deep purple and reds. Instantly and for the next hour I felt like I had descending into the Neolithic/Mythological age. And into the pre-renaissance mindset of time where linearity was absent, cyclic experience unnecessary... just when it was/is. Karen's deep and evocative chanting voice reflected and called forth in multitude amongst the landscape. Bone-chilling, or, perhaps, penetrating down through the bone. A thick and immaterial drone wove itself into the air. Voices began emerging from the cliff's face, the stones itself were singing, seemingly liberated from their geological time space. I understood more about why archetypal memory forms of seers, divinatory, witches and sorceresses exist in our cultural long storylines, our shared sociopsychological neurological rationalization constructs. Those necessary systems of attempting to interpret and communicate the world. It was an incredible moment within the blur between the night and the day. Although Karen's main instrument are her voice, and her mind, she also performs on organ, and also together with the Mediterranean folk music impressionada Marion Cousin on this deeply moving album. Karen also utilizes a very special French instrument known as the BAB, a kind of mechanized vielle (hurdy-gurdy)... one of the more incredible inventions of the La Nòvia group's legendary instrument builder Léo Maurel. Basically, the instrument sounds like an arcane goth/spirit interpreting Phill Niblock's string pieces, in monochrome on the very edge of the invention of color grain. Marvelous." Recorded and mixed by Borja Flames on 2019 New Year's Eve. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin July 2019.

LAVENDER FLU, THE Barbarian Dust LP
"In contrast to their prior mobile-unit hole-ups and home-taped fryers, Barbarian Dust, the third album from Lavender Flu, marks the band's first raid of a proper studio. Extending the formalities further, the conceptual impetus for the sessions stems from a collective meditation on cosmic biker rock. Smokey, sure -- and that peculiar, chunky ether seeps into the resulting collection -- but it all ultimately serves to a liquid frame, a set of parameters imposed purely to burst through. Compositionally and thematically, Barbarian Dust alternates between hope and anger, each idealized, a sway thoughtfully achieved through an often-soaring, occasionally busted version of rock heaviness (without ever approaching 'Heavy Rock', thank heaven/hell). In every sense of the word, it's their most aggressive work to date. "Barbarian Dust collects songs that move in and out of wobble and explosion, each pushing forever forward, just as the composers themselves do. Galaxies past cool-but-copyist trips, Lavender Flu -- brothers Chris and Lucas Gunn, Scott Simmons and Ben Spencer -- slaughter the trivial in favor of a newer, deeper, more meaningful sound, indifferent to any path other than their own. Time to transform, yet again." --Mitch Cardwell

Steve Moore is widely recognized as one half of Italo disco-tinged horror-prog project Zombi, his numerous thriller movie soundtrack works (The Guest, VFW, Mayhem, Bliss, The Mind's Eye) as well has his clubbier output on Ron Morelli's L.I.E.S. imprint. The title track of this four-track EP, Frame Dragging sees Moore in full spine-tingling mode. In case you've ever stepped into a hot bath on a cold day (in case you haven't you should try it) you should be well familiar with the phenomenon of being incredibly cold and hot at once. That's exactly what "Frame Digging" does to the dancefloor. Goosebump massacre. "Gamma Quadrant" combines emotive Balearic elements with a rolling minimal house track that's reminiscent of early Playhouse glory. Or is it early Kompakt? "Gravity Well" and "Protostar" are both taking a more chilled out route. They perfectly bookend both sides of the record and showcase Moore's stunning ability of creating suspenseful, spaced-out beauty.

Since last seen in 2018 on Speicher 103, Marc has kept plenty busy with a release on Bedrock, a collaboration with Stephan Bodzin, plus a series of releases with Petar Dundov on his own Systematic Recordings. Beyond Marc's rigorous DJ touring schedule, he performed live in a planetarium and ended the year with a highlight, performing live at Philharmonie Cologne together with violinist Miki Kekenj and the Takeover! Ensemble. Marc appears to be looking back to the deep, twisted forms of techno that shaped his early years with this double header. "Stalker" clearly delivers a typical Detroit-ish '90s grittiness and drive which resounded on the dancefloors of the German rave scene of that era. "Beyond" is a deeper cut for those late-night dreamers who are into the sound of Carpenter. A growling synth and laser light synth mingle relentlessly until a delicate piano quickly produces the realization that it's the place.

ORB, THE COW / Chill Out, World! CD
2020 repress. The Orb, Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann, have become known for their genre-bending curiosity and surprising sonic detours, exploring experimental soundscapes as well as club-friendly beats. COW / Chill Out, World! is a masterful ambient album that branches out in many directions, but unmistakably sounds like The Orb. In contrast to their much-acclaimed previous full-length Moonbuilding 2703 AD (KOMP 124CD/KOM 330LP, 2015), which took years to prepare and fine-tune, COW / Chill Out, World! was produced over the course of only five sessions in six months, directly following the like-minded Alpine EP (KOM 339EP, 2016). Paterson on recording the album: "It got so spontaneous that a track like '9 Elms Over River Eno (Channel 9)' consisted only of material collected at North Carolina's Moogfest in May - second-hand records from local stores, field recordings, live samples from gigs that we liked, and of course an excursion to the Eno River, which actually exists. This geographic intimacy and the spontaneity are among the top reasons why we love this album so much." Fehlmann sees the duo's relentless gigging schedule as a formative influence on the new album: "the countless performances we've played in the last years have brought us closer as a musical unit. The spice of our concerts is improvisation - a fertile process that we've brought to the studio, where we operate with very simple rules of engagement and go wherever the flow takes us." It's an approach that one might expect from traditional acoustic instrumentation, not necessarily an electronic set-up. Once more, The Orb's trademark playfulness is on full display on COW / Chill Out, World! and it doesn't limit itself to the multi-layered sampling and psychedelic sound composites. It's not so much an obscure trope coming full circle as a perfect example for The Orb's multi-timbre approach to sound and meaning - a compelling, immersive journey to diverse places and impressions. Each track title is a conceptual work in its own right, playing with multiple references, some of which remain highly personal and mysterious. But the greatest feat of The Orb's latest outing might just be how all this semantic doodling never gets in the way of the actual listening, at all times directly relating the artists's sonic vitality and cheerful nosiness.

OHYDA Koszmar LP
Sophomore release by Lublin's Ohyda. Picking up where their self-titled LP left in 2016 their new 12" ups the feedback, aggression, and psychedelic-infused hardcore of their previous release to new levels. Sonically Ohyda are dark and anthemic, with a ferocious guitar tone and delay vocals backed up by an extremely solid rhythm section. Not afraid of riffs or creating atmospheric passages leading to explosions of noise full of nightmarish visions of the current world. Imagine Abaddon meeting Hawkwind at Jarocin Festival then using Cress's gear to write an album of distorted, quasi industrial hardcore. If the class of 1984 Polish hardcore had dreamed of what the future would sound, it will be close to Koszmar.

A scene veteran, Volk is known for his releases on Jeff Mills' Axis Records, Patrice Scott's Sistrum, or Steffi's Dolly imprint or for his live appearances in staple clubs Berghain, Tresor, Panorama Bar, Golden Pudel, or Corsica Studios to name a few. Opener "Soldered Minds" introduces a dense, energy-filled dynamic that's both impactful and intriguing. Label chiefs Rebar give the track a "Hum" remix treatment, adding layers of sizzle and flow that transform it into an afterhours-ready alternative. Undulating basslines stand the base of "Magma In Slo-mo", a track that offers a solid anchor and great tool for the dancefloor. The haunting, glitch-laden "Asphalt Flowers" brings unpredictability with its jittery, uneasy atmosphere that, if played at the right time, is the perfect trigger for a descent into dance delirium.

JUNE Silver Demon LP
June's Silver Demon explores a futuristic dystopian world where transcendence and oppression coexist, where claustrophobia and infinite openness coincide. A world of contrasts that is the product of the artist's active imagination and conscious effort to confront the subconscious. The album was recorded using original techniques from the golden era of electronic music (late '70s to mid-80s) with an arsenal of vintage analog synthesizers, drum machines, and effect processors (originating) from the same time period. While the aesthetics of the classic precursors emerge through the minimal, deep, dark architecture of June's music, Silver Demon prevails with the artist's characteristic originality. Graphic design by Lee Douglas. All tracks recorded and produced by Tsampikos Fronas, 2019. Mastered by Rude 66.

GOTTSCHING, MANUEL E2-E4 (35th Anniversary Edition) LP

In celebration of the 2016 35th anniversary of the December 12, 1981, recording of Manuel Göttsching's legendary E2-E4, one of electronic music's most influential recordings, Göttsching's MG.ART label presents an official reissue, carefully overseen by the master himself. Includes liner notes by Manuel Göttsching, archival photos, and an excerpt of David Elliott's review in Sounds from June 16, 1984."As the story is sometimes told, Göttsching stopped in the studio for a couple of hours in 1981 and invented techno. E2-E4 is the most compelling argument that techno came from Germany-- more so than any single Kraftwerk album, anyway. The sleeve credits the former Ash Ra Tempel leader with 'guitar and electronics', but few could stretch that meager toolkit like Göttsching. Over a heavenly two-chord synth vamp and simple sequenced drum and bass, Göttsching's played his guitar like a percussion instrument, creating music that defines the word 'hypnotic' over the sixty minutes . . . A key piece in the electronic music puzzle that's been name-checked, reworked and expanded upon countless times." --Mark Richardson, Pitchfork

KOANG, GORDON Mal Mi Goa/Salaam 12"
Mal Mi Goa, Gordon Koang's first release for the Music In Exile project, is a song sung in his native Neur language, calling for peace between the people of Sudan and also around the world. It was recorded by Stefan Blair in a cramped attic studio in Collingwood in the cold Melbourne winter of 2018, where Gordon and his cousin Paul would come for weekly jam sessions punctuated by conversation and shared meals. It was during these sessions that many local Melbourne musicians had the opportunity to meet Gordon, dropping by for a chat and marveling at his incredible skill on the thom, a kind of Sudanese banjo that has been in Gordon's family since his days back in Sudan. The track is backed on the B-side by another one of Gordon's peace songs, this time sung in Arabic and titled "Salaam". As a speaker of English, Neur, and Arabic, Gordon's songs can often be found in various forms and multiple languages, yet they will often revolve around central themes of peace, love and harmony amongst the people of the world. He is an incredibly passionate and gentle man, always moments away from one of his trademark smiles. To hear Gordon speak of the human race and his dreams for peace is truly an inspiring and uplifting experience.

The band showcase what happens when people from the farthest flung corners of the world find themselves living shoulder to shoulder in a new environment. The result -- nine unique individuals, each masters of their own craft and with their own personal histories, working together to create something that can be called their own. PICCIONI, PIERO Il Dio Sotto La Pelle 2LP
One of Piero Piccioni's best contributions for the seveth art. Recorded for the homonymous documentary (1974) by Folco Quilici and Carlo Alberto Pinelli, looking for some people who reject civilization to withdraw in nature and peace, Il Dio Sotto La Pelle was released for the first time in 2000, quickly becoming one of the most sought-after records by many collectors and fans. Musica Per Immagini and Sonor Music Editions release a renewed edition of Il Dio Sotto La Pelle, where jazz, exotic and lounge music and psychedelia are mixed in an admirable way: introduced by the dreamy voice of Catherine Howe for "It's Possible", Piero Piccioni's organ gives you fragments of a dazzling splendor such as "Night To Come" or "Give Love A Chance", while "Inventions" and "Katmandu" handed down to the posterity the guitarist vein of the opera, demonstration of the period of great creativity crossed by the Italian composers, capable of filtering their traditional and classical action with some rock elements. Il Dio Sotto La Pelle is available again as double-LP album with tracks remastered by Claudio Fuiano from first generation master tapes and sequenced by Lorenzo Fabrizi. Also including twelve unreleased gems, new graphics inspired by the original posters. Designed by Luca Barcellona and Marco Ferretti's liner notes.

TOBIAS. 1972 12"
On 1972, veteran producer and live musician Tobias Freund offers up four tracks of layered and meticulously-crafted techno using his extensive archives of tape recordings collected since childhood. Referencing a mix of profound political events in German history and esoteric meditation guides, the Berghain resident's warm, detailed sound edges beyond the floor toward brain-tingling home listening and wanderlust autobahn escapism. The EP begins with the titles track's buzzing synths panning rhythmically across the stereo field like a hypnotist's pocket watch, while a somber, sampled string melody pushes further into cosmic territory before concluding with a bi-lingual eulogy. "Schism" soars with a never-ending snare roll and sparse kicks -- an entire track floating on a break that never lands. On "The Wisdom Of No Escape", Freund combines soft, polyrhythmic bleeps with esoteric vocal samples on an inward path of hallucinogenic internal discovery. EP closer "Electric Storm" makes a turn for the ultra-stoned, with hats and writhing vocals disintegrating and reforming over a soft, round steady pulse. Overall, 1972 features a sound that Tobias. has honed for over 30 years, having initially made a name for himself mixing various pop hits in the '80s and '90s while simultaneously producing experimental electronics under various pseudonyms including Metazone, Phobia, Pink Elln, and Zoon. On his own Non Standard Productions imprint he has regularly collaborated with the likes of Max Loderbauer and Ricardo Villalobos and most recently with visual artist Valentina Berthelon as Recent Arts. His releases and lengthy live techno sets with AtomTM continue to set the bar high for improvised electronics.

ORCUTT, BILL Odds Against Tomorrow LP
2020 repress. LP version. "After two LPs and over half a decade spent toiling in the margins of the American Songbook, Bill Orcutt returns to original composition and the blues with his latest LP, Odds Against Tomorrow. Taking its title from Robert Wise's 1959 film noir, Odds Against Tomorrow retrofits familiar folk/blues forms to the unique sound of Orcutt's guitar and the result crackles with a freshness and authority that nostalgic retreads cannot deliver. Odds Against Tomorrow is more than an expansion of the territory charted by Bill Orcutt, his eponymous 2017 studio electric debut, although it's certainly that. With its nods to existing musics, half-step fluctuations, and near-songwriter-ly manipulations of tension/release, Odds Against Tomorrow is a rock record -- almost. Clearly and simply recorded through a clattering Fender Twin in Orcutt's living room and lovingly mixed by Bay Area neighbor and pedal-steel savant Chuck Johnson, no one would mistake it for any era's radio fodder, yet the precision of its technique and the swaying Child-ballad logic of its gentler improvisations comfortably seats it between John Mayall and Richard Thompson in your Ikea Kallax. Three songs ('Odds Against Tomorrow,' 'The Writhing Jar,' 'Already Old') are multi-tracked, an innovation that, for guitar buffs familiar with Orcutt's stripped-down vernacular, jumps out of the grooves like a Les Paul sound-on-sound excursion in 1948, or a Jandek blues rave-up in 1987. Specifically evoking John Lee Hooker's double-track experiments on 1952's 'Walking the Boogie,' the steady chord vamps of 'Odds Against Tomorrow' and 'Already Old' form a harmonic turf on which Orcutt solos with lyrical abandon . . . For the more 'contemporary-minded,' 'The Writhing Jar''s crashing overdubs recall the brassy six-string voicings of This Heat or Illitch. With the exception of the unreconstructed Elmore James-isms of 'Stray Dog' and the 'Layla'-finale-like haze of 'All Your Buried Corpses Begin To Speak,' the remaining non-overdubbed tracks dovetail snugly with Orcutt's previous solo output, reeling gently in a Mazzacane-oid mode or vibing up the standards ('Moon River'). On their own, these tracks would still be an important contribution to Orcutt's canon. As part of Odds Against Tomorrow's greater whole, they provide a through line, connecting the idiosyncrasies of Orcutt's past explorations with the scrambled tropes of his present work. Odds Against Tomorrow challenges contemporary solo guitar practice in a way that simultaneously nullifies hazy dreams of folk purity and establishes a new high-water mark for blues-rock reconstruction." --Tom Carter

M.RUX Vermonische Melodien LP
Vermonische Melodien is a collection of compositions by DJ-producer M.RUX, made with old Vermona machines from Eastern Germany. The nine electronica tracks can't conceal their influences from Exotica records of the 1960s as well as their fondness for vintage music technology. You hear voices singing lullabies ("Magische Time"), mumbling chopped-up syllables ("Seelnatrax"), or reciting a Shakespeare quote ("Bakelit") - are they real? Yes! But they are mostly generated by the world's first speech synthesis hardware, the IBM 704 from 1954, and processed into off-key melodic beauty with vocoders. "I've always been curious about musical visions from the 1970s", says M.RUX about his inspiration for Vermonische Melodien. "Those nifty Vermona machines can today be seen as future machines from the 1970s. They seem almost mystical to me. Like relics from an epoch long ago... and I wanted to find out how music from that time could have sounded." On the album M.RUX uses, above all, equipment by Vermona, a brand from Eastern Germany manufacturing electronic musical instruments until 1990. The drum machine Vermona ER-9 (1976) was the first instrument M.RUX ever possessed. It forms the rhythmical backbone of his studio on this record. The melodies on the other hand have mainly been played on a Vermona Formation-1, a suitcase synthesizer from 1980. Although these two machines are joined by countless other instruments and effect units, their particular soft sound is present in every single moment of this soothing album. "I also take a deep bow to the late Reinhard 'Lacky' Lakomy", M.RUX adds. "His releases were the first electronic instrumental records on the Amiga label which has been a huge influence for my work in general and this record in particular." M.RUX has appeared as a solo producer with his In the Hold EP (2016) on his own YNFND imprint. Before that he had become famous for his edits which gently transform songs by Nina Simone, Townes Van Zandt, Tom Zé, and many more into slow, dancefloor-ready gems. Pingipung present this first full-length album by M.RUX. He is not only a talented multi-instrumentalist and original producer but also a skillful remixer -- as he has shown twice to the Pingipung audience with his touches on Umeko Ando's Ainu folklore songs.

MARSICODITRAPANI The Greatest Nots LP
Sooner or later it was bound to happen. They are those unforeseen occurrences that suddenly and unexpectedly appear inside your auricle that make the history of Italian music. "History" with an incorruptibly lowercase "h"; because it's the fact that it's lowercase that changes our cultural existence. That unanticipated oversight that comes bursting through, that unwanted error that rises up with absolute certainty. The minimum common divisor that becomes huge in the mainstream imagination. The philosophical garbage heap for the underclass perpetually suffering from symptoms of withdrawal from everywhere and anyway. Maurizio Marsico, the magnificent mistake of Italian music. An absolute master at running decades of contemporary music through the spin cycle in the pressure cooker of post-modern madness. Inadvertently. Since the end of the seventies, he has been silently leading the way for Italian cultural processes, giddily mastering them and tossing them to people who are hungry but have no digestive apparatus, aimlessly displaced in the outskirts of nothingness. From Milan to New York. Then there's Stefano Di Trapani, the absolute presence of the "other cultures" that have traversed the first twenty years of the 2000s. Without Di Trapani (often masquerading under the pseudonym Demented Burrocacao), Rome would have failed to dictate forms and methods within the architecture of international sound. He is an absolute manipulator of compliant thought and a declared destroyer of the planetary rules of sound. He is also a member of the cultural underclass in the wretched realm of absolute certainties. Together they created Greatest Nots, an encyclopaedic crib sheet of what was, is and will be missing from Italian music. A Hahnemann-esque project where forty years of splinters of Italian music have been diluted and dynamized. A homeopathic process carried out by two alchemists who are totally unaware of the processes that led to the creation of the homunculus, settling for just his hearing apparatus and his hypothalamus. Like modern butchers, they offer us the rotten meat of Italian music, blood, and fat to feed the proletariat crushed by contemporary simultaneity. Everything is so that everything returns, in distorted yet fascinating and obsessive forms. Things that make the "newness" we're drowning in look like the sludge extracted from the sewers of a modern psychiatric facility. Nothing will be as it was before because what there was before never existed. Cover illustration by Enrico Infidel D'Elia and Simone Tso. Gatefold sleeve; edition of 300.

LOOP Heaven's End 2CD
2020 repress. "British primal psych band Loop was formed in London in 1986 by Robert Hampson on guitar and vocals and Beki Stewart (Bex) on drums. After finding bassist Glen Ray, Loop signed to Head Records, run by Jeff Barrett (Heavenly), and released the feedbackdrenched 12-inch, 16 Dreams. With the arrival of James Endeacott on second guitar, drummer John Wills, and bassist Neil MacKay, Loop adopted a more primal, rhythmic approach and put out their debut full-length, 1987's Heavens End. The band hypnotized all with their discordant, trance-like spell which served as an antidote to the prevailing trends in British pop at the time; they resurrected the concept of loud, out-there rock for a new era, creating droning soundscapes of bleak beauty and harsh dissonance loosely influenced by The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The MC5, but retaining the avant-garde and experimental edge of Can, Faust, Neu!, Rhys Chatham, Glenn Branca, and minimalist systems music. Live shows were revelatory -- Loop pushed PAs to the very limit, delivering a sonic pummel that has yet to be experienced since."

LOOP A Gilded Eternity 2CD
2020 repress. "A Gilded Eternity was the third and final full-length from Loop. Originally released in January 1990, it was reissued as part of the band's series of remastered 2xCDs in 2009. The seven tracks on the album (plus the two on the bonus single) are from a band at the absolute peak of their powers. There was far more to Loop than simply bludgeoning riffs and cranking up the gain control -- here was a group that also traded in textures, tempos and a no-less-intoxicated alternative to the saucer-eyed ravers who were then 'avin' it large. A Gilded Eternity was the moment that Loop slipped loose the anchor and set sail into a universe that was entirely their own -- a collection of hypnotic mantras that used repetition deliberately and methodically to induce a trance-like state. The epic 'Be Here Now' is a typical case: crafted around a circling, swooping riff, its build-up is both subtle and jarring, coming on with all the stealth and power of an unexpurgated LSD trip."

VYNEHALL, LEON Rojus (Designed To Dance) 2x12"
2020 repress. Double 12" version. Leon Vynehall has established himself as a genuine artist, creating proper songs that are as layered with musicality and craftsmanship as they are in tune with the dancefloor. Drawing influence from house, techno, disco, funk, hip hop, and soul, Vynehall's music incorporates many elements from his musical past as well; his journey, like most, began with playing drums and piano in bands as a teenager, which manifests itself in the raw, live sound he strives for in his productions. His work has seen him dabble in various tempos, palettes, and styles while always remaining unmistakably his own, reflecting his wide-ranging listening habits, which span everything from classical and orchestral compositions to post-punk. Vynehall describes the inspiration for Rojus (Designed To Dance): "Two years ago I played at Studio 9 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The following day I missed my flight home and ended up spending an extra day, which gave me a chance to explore the city with my friend Linus, who took me to the Contemporary Art Centre. It was there I spotted a book named Rojus, that Linus told me translated as 'Paradise'. The word and striking cover of the book stuck in my mind. A few days after returning home, I turned on a National Geographic documentary named Designed To Dance, explaining the courtship rituals of Birds Of Paradise." Rojus (Designed To Dance), Vynehall goes on to explain, is a "record of functional club music, sequenced as if it were a club night, from doors to closing, using samples of these Birds Of Paradise and their habitat."

SIGWARD Balmung Beam 12"
If you know Dervaig is actually a small village in Scotland you begin to understand why the opening track of Sigward's Balmung Beam EP sounds a bit eerie and dark. Long, long ago the Vikings came ashore at Dervaig (the word means 'small inlet' in Norwegian) but in the winter of 2019 Dutch producer Sigward uses it as a passage way to lead us into his new record. Balmung Beam is Sjoerd Sigward's second EP for SoHaSo, the follow up for the well-received Black Mambo (SOHASO 004EP, 2014). In the meantime Sjoerd moved from Holland to Germany; he now resides in Berlin. This step has provided him with a cinemascope view on dance music, as his new EP clearly illustrates. Italoesque flavors on the title track, meditative pulses on the beautiful "Woodland Wells Inc" and spacious Andy Stott-like tension on "Jettison." /DL/MS/ takes "Balmung Bean" to new wave territories on their slumbering arpeggio-driven remix.

LORELLE MEETS THE OBSOLETE Re-facto 12"
Lead track "Fosas Limitadas" is percussion heavy with strident synths and choppy guitars, sounding like a mix of Stereolab and Wire, before bursting into a chorus that sounds like the best Spanish psych-pop single you've never heard. An appropriate analogy as, according to singer/guitarist Lorena Quintanilla, the song (which translates as "limited graves") "talks about the inconsistence of our memories." "I like the rhythm -- the demo made me think of [Survivor's] 'Eye Of The Tiger'," adds guitarist Alberto González, with a laugh. "It's a fun song in a weird way. It sounds like if it was melting..." The other new track, "El Olivo", is a lament for the old house they lived in when they first moved to the city of Ensenada in 2017. "Lorena had a dream about this huge olive tree," explains Alberto. "In the dream, there was golden oil emerging from it and she saw the tree as an infinite source of abundancy and wellness. A year after her dream, we moved to that 100-year old house and turns out there was an old olive tree in the backyard. The tree is now gone along with the house --the greedy owners demolished everything in the property to build a gym or some other elitist business." The EP is rounded out by remixes of two songs from De Facto (2019). CC Crain, aka Cooper Crain from Cave and Bitchin Bajas turns "Lux, Lumina" into a disturbing dub noise, like Broadcast covering PiL's Metal Box, while Pye Corner Audio sets the epic "Unificado" adrift on a sea of analogue synths. Transparent orange and green moon phase vinyl; Edition of 300.

Sharif Laffrey is something of an unheralded hero of the underground Detroit scene. Active since the halcyon days of the early-90s Motor City rave movement, his sporadic releases are rarely less than superb. Sharif Laffrey has been playing records and making music for over 20 years. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he's worked on the line checking camshafts for Chryslers and as an operative for Underground Resistance (UR) at Submerge for Mike Banks, at the same time. Currently releasing music on his own label Special Forces. Championed by DJ Harvey, Carl Craig, Dixon, Andrew Weatherall, Ivan Smagghe, Seth Troxler, The Juan Maclean, Optimo, Trevor Jackson, Hunee, Manfredas, Solar, The Chemical Brothers... "Sounds To Come" is a long trip of low "techno" with a brute baseline and mesmeric vocals -- when turning directly into the golden hour of a late night/early morning is the thing to do.

OISEAUX-TEMPETE Tlamess (Sortilege) CD
Tlamess (Sortilège) is Oiseaux-Tempête's first original soundtrack composed for the second feature film by critically-acclaimed Tunisian director Ala Eddine Slim (Festival de Cannes' 51st Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, BFI London, ADF Argentina, Geneva GIFF, Rome Medfilm Festival, Marrakech International Film Festival). Combining hypnotic feedbacks and synthesizer orchestral work, drifting ambient with shamanic beats, the Tlamess (Sortilège) original soundtrack was entirely improvised while watching the movie's rushes. On those sessions that took place between Mikrokosm recording studios in Lyon and Magnum Diva home studio in Paris, you find Oiseaux-Tempête's quartet core team: Frédéric D. Oberland, Stéphane Pigneul, Mondkopf, and Jean-Michel Pirès (Bruit Noir). Fully instrumental, including extended versions, and unreleased tracks, this immersive film score is also their most electronic album to date. "S, a young Tunisian soldier, has been told that his mother has died, and is given a week's leave. Instead of returning to his military base, he starts to drift and locking himself away in his parents' house. This passive form of desertion culminates in a manhunt through the outskirts of the city. In the second part of this hypnotic diptych, a young woman, F, is also fleeing an oppressive situation. Married to a rich man and pining away in a luxury solitude she decides to flee the golden cage and disappears into the nearby woods. Eventually the two characters will meet inside the strange forest." In his second feature, director Ala Eddine Slim presents an intriguing juxtaposition of raw realism with a hypnotic allegory of contemporary Tunisia, held together by an intense, powerful, and grating soundtrack. Regularly pairing with cinema and photography since their debut, Oiseaux-Tempête also accompanied the work of video/filmmakers As Human Pattern (KHAMSIN, best documentary at Torino Film Festival), Hinde Boujemaa (Noura's Dream, Golden Tanit & Best Actress prizes at JCC Carthage), Léa Fehner (Les Ogres, best film at Cabourg Film Festival), Stéphane Charpentier (The Divided Line, Athens French Institute), Karel Doing (Palindrome Series, International Film Festival Rotterdam), Clément Cogitore (Braguino exhibition at Le BAL), and the Temps Zero live screenings (in Berlin, Paris, Toulouse with photographers Michael Ackerman, Gaël Bonnefon, Adam Cohen, Damien Daufresne, Alisa Resnik, Gilles Roudière, Yusuf Sevincli...)

GIBSON, JON Songs & Melodies, 1973-1977 2LP
"Since the mid-1960s, Jon Gibson has played a key role in the development of American avant-garde music. As a versatile reed player, he has performed with everyone from Steve Reich and Philip Glass to Terry Riley and La Monte Young. In the 1970s, Gibson would emerge as a minimalist composer in his own right and release two exceptional albums, Visitations and Two Solo Pieces, on Glass' Chatham Square imprint. Songs & Melodies brings together recordings from 1973 to 1977 (mostly previously unreleased), featuring prominent figures in New York's scene including Arthur Russell, Barbara Benary and Julius Eastman. This double LP collection showcases the breadth of Gibson's expressive range -- from introspective piano meditations to cerebral ensemble works -- and the subtlety of his radical compositional techniques. The front cover artwork, a hand-drawn diagram by Gibson, originally appeared in the program for a March 1974 concert at Washington Square Church in Greenwich Village. While this concert was not the first to feature the composer exclusively, it would be a pivotal event in Gibson's early career as a composer. Superior Viaduct is honored to present this long overdue archival release that not only documents Gibson's important work, but also a crucial period in NYC musical history."

FULLMAN, ELLEN In The Sea 2LP
"Ellen Fullman began developing The Long String Instrument in her St. Paul, Minnesota studio in 1980 and moved to Brooklyn the following year. Inspired by composer and instrument builder Harry Partch, Fullman's large-scale work creates droning, organ-like overtones that are as unique in the world of sound as her vision of the instrument itself. Along with her 1985 debut album -- appropriately titled The Long String Instrument -- Fullman's only output in the 1980s would be two self-released cassettes, In The Sea and Work For Four Players And 90 Strings, recorded in 1987 at an unfinished office tower in Austin, Texas. This double LP collection features music from both cassettes as well as a previously unreleased piece from 1988 at De Fabriek in Den Bosch, Holland. Ethereal and exquisitely paced, these rare recordings capture minimalism's quiet radiance. Within a musical landscape that has seen the rise of contemporary drone practitioners like Ellen Arkbro and Kali Malone, Fullman is sure to find a legion of fans. Superior Viaduct is honored to present this long overdue archival release that marks a particularly vibrant period of Fullman's pioneering and timeless work."

PULLED BY MAGNETS Rose Golden Doorways CD
Acclaimed London-based sonic explorer Seb Rochford unleashes a startling new band and debut album. The frontier where doom rhythms rub against haunted saxophone atmospherics. A four-time Mercury Prize nominee (Polar Bear, Sons of Kemet, Basquiat Strings) Pulled By Magnets is Seb's most sublime and provocative musical statement to date. From the off, it sounds unlike anything the Scots-born, London-based, desert-loving drummer of Anglo-Indian and English/Irish heritage has done before. Gone are the quizzical, music-hall-at-the-end-of-the-world stylings of Polar Bear, to be replaced by a soundtrack of the mind that is, by turns, sublime, stately and provocative. Rose Golden Doorways was recorded in The Old Church in Stoke Newington, London and features, in addition to Rochford, Polar Bear comrade Pete Wareham on saxophone and Neil Charles (Zed-U, Empirical) on bass guitar. Even with the help of the church, you'll wonder how the three of them managed to make the sound they do, especially when you learn that the album is a series of live takes, with no added studio woo. In his own words, Seb wanted "an overwhelming, big sound", one partly informed by his interest in the musical beyond of his grindcore/death/heavy roots. But there's another tradition at work here, the fruit of recent travels and musical study in India, the country of his mother's birth. He wanted to bring to this band the experiments with pacing and time found in the classical Indian raag -- something that, happily, Neil seemed to understand instinctively. Along with that was some intensive reading of ancient Indian and Bedouin texts, and it's a sense of the ancient that permeates the record more than anything else -- most clearly, to these ears, in "Breath That Sparks" as it resolves into the frankly terrifying "Those Among Us". There's huge scale involved here -- a sense of space, of geology, of tectonic plates shifting, like a piece of sonic Land Art wrought by Pete's titanic sax and eased (or hammered) into place by Seb's drums. For all that, this is a deeply personal, perhaps even intimate record, sound-tracking as it does Seb's own post-everything musical re-set, while the process of creation, which involves him singing the music to himself before writing it down on the piano, is a remarkably tender one for a record of this size.

PROPER ORNAMENTS, THE Mission Bells CD
Nine months since the release of 6 Lenins (TR 432CD/LP, 2019), The Proper Ornaments are back with Mission Bells, a somber but uplifting record that began its life while they were on tour earlier in 2019, when new ideas emerged in different soundchecks around Europe. James Hoare, Bobby Syme, and Max Oscarnold, the founders of the group, recruited Nathalie Bruno as a bassist for the tour, and then the four-piece began recording in the summer at Hoare's home studio in Finsbury Park, London, using the same 16-track Studer tape machine as on their previous record, but this time they incorporated a Moog sequencer and other electronics instruments. On these recordings, meticulous attention to detail is never deployed as an end in itself but always with the song and sound in mind. As the Mission Bells sing, echoes of black albums Velvets, Swell Maps, Spiritualized, and Cluster might reach inside your brain, but the truth is that it's hard to pinpoint influences on an album that is the fifth in the life of this band, as they have been becoming more and more themselves, not needing to look elsewhere for inspiration. This is not a retro band, they just happened to like playing guitar, a preference that began, at least for James Hoare and Max Oscarnold, when they were nine years old. Whoever is familiar with their previous records might agree that Mission Bells has a lot of the innocent elements (drum machines underneath simple songs) of their first record, Waiting For The Summer (2013), the melancholy of Foxhole (2017), and their heavy live sounds, as drummer Bobby Syme points out. But it's the lyrical maturity that is the real achievement on this record. The words can be read as a William Burroughs cut-up experiment on what it is to live in these dystopian times. Mission Bells is a majestic achievement, a musical maelstrom, its harmonies drawing the inclined listener into an irreversible somnambulant state, caught between dreamland and waking hours. The beauty of it is, you won't want to escape, even though the door is flung open as your postmodern life awaits you outside...

ELEH Living Space 2LP
Following Slow Fade for Hard Sync (2009) and Location Momentum (2010), Living Space is Eleh's third physical release for Touch. Seven years in the making, this new release consolidates the artist's parallel narrative between a series of vinyl and CD releases for Important Records -- where the emphasis is on a minimalist aesthetic -- to a visual counterpoint that hints at the cinematic and painterly qualities of the music. Sound, as a healing force, is an idea as old as the medium itself. Inspired by the legacy and above all the spirit of John Coltrane, Living Space features five new compositions that seek to express the beauty of slow change, not only through the microtonal shifts in sound that Eleh navigates but moving with the atmospheric and shape-shifting conditions that the music creates as it interacts with the listening space, whether bedroom or concert hall, each one of them unique. If the ambition of Living Space is to reflect both personal and collective growth cycles, the experience of its audition has the effect of stopping time. Melodic and harmonic progressions are implied and not stated obviously, to enable listeners to apply their own emotions and feelings to the music. Using modular and analog synthesizers, piano, organ, bass, and symphonic chimes, Living Space stresses the promise of the albm's final track -- "Lighter Touch" -- forsaking the forceful hand for an approach that mirrors the slower and softer exposures of plant life and leaf formations, slow moving waters, not flash floods nor forest fires. In counterpoint to the music, the 64-minute album is presented in a gatefold sleeve with Jon Wozencroft's water photography extending the meditational pull of these new compositions. For those for whom Eleh needs no introduction, see if you agree. Anyone who has yet to experience the artist's sonic alchemy, Living Space is the perfect starting point.

OPAL SUNN Laika EP 12"
Opal Sunn's return to Nick Höppner's Touch From A Distance is sort of a recap of 2019 -- a year that proved pretty incredible for the duo of Alex Kassian and Oba Hiroaki. Their live show took them quite literally all over the world including Tokyo, Valencia, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Fusion Festival, England's beloved Field Maneuvers and last but not least: Panorama Bar in Berlin, where they performed twice in 2019 as part of the Touch From A Distance label nights. Their Laika EP has been largely inspired by their first Panaroma Bar performance in January of last year, one in which they - unassumingly, yet assertively - took the venue by storm. Eight months later their show in the Laika tent at the UK's best kept festival secret, Field Maneuvers, marked a second highlight in Opal Sunn's calendar. As a tribute, Opal Sunn have called the opening track to this record "Laika". Their second EP for Touch From A Distance is picking things up where their debut left off, meaning Opal Sunn's sound design is as pristine as a mountain spring and their arrangements are as tight and effective as ever. Having played numerous gigs in the meantime, there seems to be a new focus, though. All four tracks feel more centered and balanced, aiming quite effortlessly at a heaving dancefloor. "Laika," the EP's lead track, sees Opal Sunn at their most effective and peak time. A long build-up and a rolling 303 bassline make for a total sure shot of a track. On "Minority State," the duo lets their electro inclinations run free, fusing razor-sharp beats with icy melodies and abstract sound effects. On the B-side, "Holy Mountain" is essential Opal Sunn: glistening arpeggios, gliding melodies, and floating beats create a psychedelic atmosphere in which one predestined to lose oneself. The EP ends with "Tangerine Blues," an equally atmospheric and trance-y track embedded in a rather broken beat, going for a more cinematic vibe.

FEDELE No Mercy For Beginners 12"
A member of popular techno trio Agents Of Time, Italian artist Fedele goes solo on his Turbo debut, No Mercy For Beginners. Against the backdrop of a nightmare international tour experience, Fedele channeled his negative feelings away from people and into creating darkly Euro-motional dancefloor catharsis. Try it sometime. Sharp-eared lovers of listening may notice that lead track "Riot Revolte" purloins the crown jewels (the street-tough vocals) from Tiga's 2004 classic "Pleasure From The Bass." DJ Hell noticed the shit out of this, introducing a mutant variation on the PFTB bassline into his lurid after-hours remix. Moreover, the entire EP recalls the legendary run of killer electro records that kicked off what many, many people refer to as Turbo's "silver age" in the early-mid 2000s. This may be utterly meaningless, or it may herald the coming era of compressed cyclical time that will dictate dance music taste in the 2020s with the sort of mathematical precision rarely found outside pie chart software.

VUKARI Aevum CD
"Black metal is already a saturated genre, especially the super-atmospheric corner that Vukari occupies, but the band steps out of that (and their own) mold with Aevum. The riffs are tighter, the blasts are more concrete, and the songwriting has become extremely emotive -- any 'flatness' predicated by Vukari's postmodern tilt gets destroyed just by just the sheer weight of the thing. Aevum is emotionally heavy, the most important kind of heavy, and that ethos has been woven throughout all eight of these medium-format tracks" --Invisible Oranges. Vukari is: Marek Cimochowicz - guitar, vocals; Spenser Morris - bass; Mike DeStefano - drums, keyboards; Jace Kiburz - guitar.

ABYSSAL VACUUM MMXVII - MMXVIII LP
MMXVII - MMXVIII combines two EPs from Abyssal Vacuum, the one from 2017 and the other from 2018."Abyssal Vacuum reveals a distinctive musical vision and 'voice', offering a conception of black metal that manages to be both mesmerizing and strikingly intense. Emanations from a deep and cavernous abyss, 'like exploring the darkest caves of Earth', but the experience it creates might also bring to mind the mysteries of the cosmos lurking in a hostile off-world void." --no clean singing"This project is a thick wall of black hate that is far more powerful than much of what you're hearing today. Abyssal Vacuum is a project that needs to be respected because it's that fucking good!" --cvlt nation

COLTRANE, JOHN Africa LP
"Recorded on June 24, 1958 at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ, these sessions feature original compositions by Wilbur Harden (best known for his work with Yusef Lateef and John Coltrane) and hard-bop trombonist Curtis Fuller (best known for his work with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and appearance on the classic Blue Trane album). The 32-year-old John Coltrane had only just recorded Blue Trane a year earlier and it is interesting to hear his style beginning to stretch out, as he makes his musical transition from strict hard bop to the groundbreaking style that would become legendary the following year on Giant Steps, making Coltrane one of the biggest names in jazz."

MYSTERY KINDAICHI BAND, THE The Adventures of Kindaichi Kosuke CD
Wewantsounds present the first official release outside of Japan for The Mystery Kindaichi Band's The Adventures of Kindaichi Kosuke, originally released in 1977. The "imaginary" soundtrack to the cult detective book series by writer Seishi Yokomizo is on many DJ want-lists. Arranged by soundtrack master Kentaro Haneda and featuring a mysterious group of the best '70s Japanese Funk musicians, the album is pure undiluted disco funk. Writer Seishi Yokomizo is an institution in Japan. He could be compared to Agatha Christie with his series of novels based on the adventures of detective Kosuke Kindaichi. The fictional character was born in 1946 with Yokomizo's first novel in the series and solved mysteries until the late '70s under Yokomizo's pen before the death of the writer in 1981. Yokomizo's novels have been a prime source for film and TV scenarios, so when, in 1977, Japanese label King Records decided to record a concept album based on the Kindaichi novels, it made complete sense. The writer was slightly surprised though. The concept album was arranged by pianist Kentaro Haneda, a key TV and film composer who has worked on many anime films and is also famous outside of Japan for composing the music for the video game Wizardry. For the album, he assembled a supergroup of some of the best Tokyo funk and city pop musicians. The long list includes jazz pianist Hideo Ichikawa who played on the 1971 Joe Henderson In Japan album, drummer Jun Moriya, who is on Joe Hisaichi's cult Wonder City Orchestra album (1982), percussionist Tadaomi Anai who played with disco singer Eri Ohno, trumpeter Koji Hadori who's featured on Haruomi Hosono's Pacific album (1978). Also present on the album are saxophonist Takeru Muraoka who plays on many Tatsuro Yamashita cult albums including For You (1982) and Spacy (1977), Kimiko Yamauchi (koto) who's on Akiko Yano's landmark 1976 album Japanese Girl (WWSCD 017CD/WWSLP 017LP), and last but not least, French hornist Koji Yamaguchi who plays on Yazuaki Shimizu's Kakashi (1982). Together they lay the funk on ten instrumentals filled with pure disco and funk breakbeats, making the album one of the highly-coveted Japanese LPs on international cratedigger scene. Remastered from the original tapes. Faithfully reproduced original artwork; Artwork by renowned illustrator Ichibun Sugimoto. New introduction by Anton Spice.

NEGRO & NEIL PIERCE, JOEY 90's House & Garage Vol. 2 2CD
Founded way back in '91, Z Records has since amassed a lauded and plentiful collection of singles, albums, and compilations. Run by Dave Lee, aka Joey Negro, the label has enjoyed success through his unique ability to foster the principles of underground dance music whilst also remaining mindful of commercial appeal. Through various compilations, Lee has consistently delved deep into the heart of a specific genre or era and selecting a lesser-known series of tracks that give a real insight into the spirit and energy that made that point in time special. This time he's been joined by Neil Pierce as co-compiler for this second collection of their favorite moments across a definitive decade for house and garage: the '90s. Vol. 2 includes material from UFO (United Future Organization), and Slam Mode, as well as remixes from Kings Of Tomorrow, Kerri Chandler, Marshall Jefferson, and Smack Productions -- the compilation is packed with sultry vocal lines and the sort of slick, irresistible grooves that defined the era. Sticking with the ethos of his series, Dave and Neil have dug out a lot of music that may have until now "slipped under the radar" meaning a lot of the material on this compilation is being digitized for the very first time. In searching deeper and wider than the average compilation, the package provides a thorough insight into why this was such a fertile period for production and gives a nod to the sort of drum patterns, sampling techniques, and vocal lines that have inspired the likes of Bicep, Brawther, and Huxley, amongst many more. Dedicated to Paul "Trouble" Anderson.Double-CD version also features: Satoshi Tomiie, Diane Charlemagne, N-Joi, LNR, Sound Source, Fini Dolo, Restless Soul, Abacus, Glenn Turner, Bonnie Byrd, Biddu Orchestra, Screamin' Rachel, Martha Wash, Tee, Elé Ferrer, Alexander Hope, Tommy Musto, Alexis P Suter, Mama's Children, Lee Truesdale, Colonel Abrams, Cassio Ware, Mentalinstrum, Kathy Summers, House of Jazz, Donald O, Joi Cardwell, Philip Damien, Mental Instrum, and Joey Negro.
