VA Still In My Arms: Compiled by Bayu and Moopie LP
Label head Moopie and digger extraordinaire Bayu shine light on a set of gems excavated from a curious period of IDM-electronica. The sentimental sequel to their stunning I Won't Have To Think About You compilation (ACOLOUR 007LP, 2017), the ten tracks float in melancholic space yet sound beautifully human. Neo Ouija alumni Bauri and Plod meet deFocus' own Lackluster, while Abfahrt Hinwil, the legendary duo of Toytronic boss Chris Cunningham and Martin Haidinger exchange a letter of melody with Multiplex. Includes a previously minidisc-only(!) track by Proem and a superb cut by Merck Records' own MD, aka Jaakko Manninen. Also features Gimmik, Num Num, and Boc Scadet. Full-color, reverse-card sleeve with printed insert.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Their Satanic Majesties Second Request 2LP
2020 repress; black vinyl. Gatefold 180 gram double vinyl version. Truth in advertising: the Brian Jonestown Massacre's sophomore album does, as promised, spring forth from the Rolling Stones' long-underrated 1967 masterpiece Their Satanic Majesties Request, copping not only Mick and Keith's leering bad-boy attitude but also their rock-and-roll-circus spirit. Opening with the brilliant "All Around You (Intro)," a tongue-in-cheek guide to the mind-altering journey ahead, the record is a kaleidoscopic, drug-fueled freakout -- like the Stones' namesake album, Second Request is painted by Eastern drones and psychedelic tangents, each track bubbling with dozens of sound effects including sitars, mellotrons, farfisas, didgeridoos, tablas, congas, and glockenspiels. Travelling through the past, darkly, the Massacre arrives on the other side unscathed; their music is too rich to be merely retro, and too knowing to be merely slavish -- the Stones themselves haven't made a record this strong or entertaining in years.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Take It from the Man 2LP
2020 repress. Originally released on CD in 1996, now reissued on A Recordings, Anton Newcombe's own record label. Released on 180 gram vinyl. The Brian Jonestown Massacre's obsession with the Rolling Stones continues unabated on the brilliant Take It from the Man!; where the group resurrected psychedelic-era excesses on the previous Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request, here they jump further back in time to the Stones' mid-'60s period, with even more superlative results. From the opening "Vacuum Boots" onward, Take It from the Man! is gritty, swaggering R&B-influenced rock, delivered with remarkable assurance and attitude; singer Anton Newcombe is half-madman and half-shaman, and he commands each delirious moment with absolute mastery, emerging not so much a disciple of Mick Jagger but as a serious threat to the throne.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Thank God for Mental Illness LP
2020 black vinyl repress; available on 180-gram vinyl (no longer comes with download code). This the first time that this title has been available on vinyl. At the risk of belaboring a rather obvious point, with Thank God for Mental Illness, their third collection of absolutely stunning music to be released in 1996, The Brian Jonestown Massacre parallels the prolific and effortless brilliance of The Rolling Stones at their fevered late-1960s peak; the sheer scope of their achievements is stunning -- rarely are bands quite so productive, or quite so consistently amazing. Thank God is The BJM's down-and-dirty country-blues outing, all 12-odd tracks supposedly recorded on a single July day at a cost of just $17.36. The Brian Jonestown Massacre is a psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco, California, led by guitarist and singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995, The Brian Jonestown Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp!, the label that gave them their start, and later for TVT and Tee Pee. The BJM has been essential in the development of the modern U.S. garage scene, and many LA and SF musicians got their start playing with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Originally, Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase -- the band's name combines the name of Stones founder Brian Jones with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones -- but his work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK shoegaze genre of the 1990s and incorporating influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian music.

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Methodrone 2LP
2020 repress. Released on 180 gram black vinyl. Deluxe gatefold with printed inner sleeves. 2007 release -- originally released in 1995. Redolent with the spirit of such high priests of effects and delay as Loop, Spaceman 3, and My Bloody Valentine, not to mention a fair dollop of the Jesus And Mary Chain, Methodrone clearly is the sum of its influences. Thankfully, BJM does a very solid job with them throughout the album's course of over 70 minutes.

FRANK, JACKSON C. Jackson C. Frank LP
2020 repress. "Jackson C. Frank's eponymous album is the embodiment of folk legend. Issued in late 1965 on the UK Columbia label, it was for many years more famous for its producer (Paul Simon) and the musicians who would go on to cover its songs (Nick Drake, Bert Jansch, Sandy Denny) than for the hauntingly beautiful music contained inside. Frank's backstory certainly adds to the legacy: born in Buffalo, New York, he used the settlement from a childhood accident to sail to London where he quickly became a fixture of the bustling folk scene. Performing a mix of blues standards and originals, he met fellow ex-pat Paul Simon who would put up the money to record Frank's only LP. For such a sparsely recorded work, Jackson C. Frank covers a lot of ground. From the rugged, world-weary opener 'Blues Run The Game' to the stunning melancholy of 'Milk And Honey,' Frank's nimble acoustic guitar and passionate howls are all that is needed to power such authentic songwriting. Captured in a single-day session, these ten tracks are stark, gritty and seemingly out-of-place with time. There may be no '60s folk record that is simultaneously as rare and influential as Jackson C. Frank's self-titled debut."

VAN BUUREN, ARMIN A State Of Trance Classics Vol. 14 4CD
Let's tickle your imagination for a bit. The club is so packed you can hardly move. The lasers are quick-firing rays of color over the top of your head and the stroboscope's flaring as the snare rolls pick up. The beat drop is imminent. You hold your breath, the people around you are bracing themselves and the music dies down only for a moment. And then, when it all comes together, when the iconic vocals start to play catch with the timeless melodies in a tempest of euphoria, you know you're in heaven. And that exact feeling is at the core of A State Of Trance Classics Vol. 14. A surge of nostalgia-infused memories, A State Of Trance Classics Vol. 14 is what some of the most beloved trance classics of all time call home. From Avicii's remix of Armin van Buuren's "Drowning" and Tiësto's edit of Paul Oakenfold's "Southern Sun" to W&W's "Mainstage", Thomas Bronzwaer's "Shadow World" and other reigning classics from tastemakers such as Above & Beyond, Chicane, Dash Berlin, Markus Schulz, Moby, and Vincent de Moor, this album taps into the bygone days to evoke moments of bliss in the here and now. It's where the past stirs the present, where emotion meets elation, and where the magic of the moment inspires the modern-day madness. A State Of Trance Classics Vol. 14 is more than just an album. It's a tidal wave of memories, sensations, and impressions packed into a collection of songs that changed the world. And through this album, those very songs may change the world yet again. FUZZTONES, THE Raw Heat: The Real Sound of "In Heat" LP
The Real Sound of "In Heat": the disclaimer on the album states, "NOT produced by Shel Talmy" (The Who, Kinks). The original version of the album In Heat from The Fuzztones, as it was intended to sound. The Fuzztones have been around for over 30 years as a garage rock revival band. Though originally from New York City, they worked mainly in Europe where their brand of retro '60s trash rock burned up radios from Hungary to Poland to Italy. The original In Heat was released in 1989 at the peak of the garage revival, when bands like the Chesterfield Kings, Lyres, and Cynics were all the rage. Unsurprising, the music industry turned a blind eye, yet miraculously The Fuzztones signed a major label deal with RCA. Label politics had the band in a "real" studio with a "name" producer who watered down their unharnessed energy and snotty attitude. In the end the original disc was a second-rate affair with most of the grit rubbed out only to die a sad, quick death at the hands of critics who never appreciated the band's live act anyway. With the resurgence in garage rock in The Hives and The Strokes, the time may be right again for The Fuzztones to get a second shot. Raw Heat therefore turns the clock back in time when garage rock rivaled punk as the most exciting musical scene to come along in decades. Produced by founder/guitarist/singer Rudi Protrudi and Jordan Tarlow (Outta Place, Morlocks) the recording gets a second wind when "Heathen Set" comes roaring out of the speakers. The running order has changed from the original recording putting more power up front. Both the classic church organ and dangerous guitars are better controlled in the mix (originally the organ overpowered the whole thing). "Hurt On Hold" still stands strong as the band's real chance at a single although "Me Tarzan, You Jane" with its featured harmonica is a close second. The added punch of the bass and primitive drums give the whole thing a real boost especially on "Cheyenne Rider" and "You Must Be A Witch" -- no wonder Ian Asbury of The Cult was so hooked on these guys. The best song might be the title track "In Heat" -- "We'll I'm a big bad wolf, can't ya hear me howl" Give the boys the credit they deserve... and all the fame!

KAMODA, JUN Jun Kamoda 2LP
2018 release. Making music as Illreme for over 15 years, as well as being a member of hip-hop trio Baleine 3000, Jun Kamoda has been a formidable force in Japan's music scene for quite some time. "Surreal Tongue in Northern Osaka" kicks off the album with organic, choppy hip-hop paced drums lead by rugged Japanese vocals. Kamoda then follows with "Nightmare Club" and "Crush" -- two tuneful, funk-infused rollers. "Hakoniwa Disco Strut" switches up to a reformed new-age disco track with an emphatic '60s electric guitar solo surrounding the center. The next three tracks, "Mt. Woo", "Gravity of Love", and "Blooming Blues.o0O" are all peppered with high-energy, uplifting melodies layered over a more uniform house sound. "The Ruddy Sunset", is a pitched down, Balearic inspired dance track. The album decisively ends by throwing genre categories completely out the window with "No Rhyme Nation" -- tough, broken drums and breaks of unpredictable, eccentric melodies are the theme here. Contains four-page cartoon booklet (12x24") by Jun Kamoda.

ROCKS FOE Fight The Good? Fight 2LP
2017 release. Rocks FOE returns to Black Acre with the eight-track project Fight The Good? Fight, a dark and conceptual record built around the notion of, according to Rocks himself, "everything being an internal and external battle". A powerful lyricist and complex storyteller, Rocks' sound combines hyper-fierce spitting with his own, abstract beat sketches. Having released his impressive debut EP, Legion, back in 2015 -- a raw, self-produced grime-rap hybrid -- he has since remained dormant to the outside world, bar a quick-fire feature on Commodo's How What Time LP in 2016 (ACRE 007LP). Written over the course of that period and entirely self-produced, Fight The Good? Fight digs deeper than ever before into Rocks' psyche, drawing on both religious elements -- "I was more or less force fed it when I was younger" -- and his own experiences for much of its lyrical inspiration. He talks money, love, confusion, happiness, and ambition to tell the story of his own every day battles. Musically, Fight The Good? Fight also broadens horizons, with Rocks widening his scope to take in sounds from beyond the sprawling urban landscape of his home town of Croydon. On tracks like "Nitty Gritty" and "Into My Own Hands" for example, the two tracks that bookend the record, he flows at trademark lightning speed over crunchy rap beats, but it's on cuts like "Downpour" and the wandering spoken-word of "Red Hand Of Ulster" that he unmasks a new, more vulnerable guise. Toning down his flow to reflect and take stock, it is in these solemn, inward moments that Rocks shines the brightest. Comfortable spitting acapella, off-beat or even in spoken word -- over straight-up rap beats or woozy Commodo instrumentals -- he has long been considered one of the UK's most compelling young lyricists, but on Fight The Good? Fight, Rocks addresses his demons, calls out bullshit, and comes of age proper. "Downpour" features Secaina.

COMMODO Dyrge 2x10"
2018 release. An artist with minimal online presence, Commodo is one of an increasingly rare few who make waves through the strength of their music alone. He builds bass-focused beats with soul and substance that never perpetuate a formula, distancing himself from contemporaries with ingenious sampling and sound design influenced by his long-time affinity with the vibrancy of hip-hop. Having released on renowned labels like Mala's renowned Deep Medi Musik and Kahn & Neek's Bandulu, Commodo is indisputably a champion of the scene. Having released his debut album entitled How What Time on Black Acre in 2016, he now returns to the Bristol-based imprint to further explore the boundaries of the 140BPM template. Guitars open "Bitch & Moan" before harmonious pads, syncopated drums, and elements of jazz come into play, moving into the dubby sounds of "Leeroy" with its ghostly synths, reverbed snare and low frequency growls. Meandering forward with a grime influenced chord sequence, "Dyrge" is a moody cut from the off featuring glitchy effects and echoing atmospherics, making way for the stripped-back and intricate "Yuliya" with its subtle percussion and mesmerizing melodies -- concluding a release exemplary of Commodo's diverse production abilities.

PRAYER Vital EP 12"
2018 release. Prayer's outsider sound is as easily recognizable as it is hard to pinpoint; it lives at a cross section of influences from classical to jungle and breaks to ambient. After his Seeing EP (ACRE 069EP, 2017) and I / II cassette release in 2017, Prayer returns to affiliate label Black Acre with VITAL EP, a heavy four tracker. Again, PRAYER blurs the lines between sorrowful sounds and high-voltage club energy in Vital EP; a piece of art that refuses to be boxed off by genre or stereotype. Opener "Fear" explores the producers love of film music; a dark sci-fi landscape punctuated with drums and melodic synths, a Bladerunner-esque track. Moving on, "I'm Still Here" is an anthem, a nostalgic mix of hardcore, jungle and classical influences with a DIY, rough and ready feel. On the other side, Prayer shows his talent for the piano with "Kind", finessing the skills that reflect his first adventures in sound. It's an emotive, stripped back number. The final track is "Vital", another drum-heavy, weighty track that sounds only like Prayer -- as ideal for the club as it is for headphones.

WENT, JOHANNA Hyena LP
Johanna Went is a pioneering performance artist best known for her wild stage performances with hand-sewn costumes and live musical backing from the likes of Z'EV and K. K. Barrett of The Screamers. Went moved to Los Angeles from Seattle in the late 1970s, and quickly began to generate a cult following as a performer, headlining venues such as Hong Kong Café, the Whisky, and Club Lingerie. For more than ten years, Went was known as an innovative performance artist, particularly for the visual richness of her on-stage characters. She was equally renowned for her use of live improvised music that crossed over from jazzy rock grooves and jungle beats to electronic soundscapes and industrial noise. And always, above all the wild, driving music: Went's completely stream-of-consciousness vocals. Hyena, originally released on Posh Boy Records in 1982, harnessed this live power into studio recordings, which have now been remixed and remastered by Went's long-time collaborator and musical director, Mark Wheaton. Translucent blood red, 180 gram vinyl; includes download card. Includes three bonus tracks."On Hyena, patterns emerge; each track takes on a character of its own. The instruments and voices coalesce into moods -- seven different moods in the course of the record -- and they feel like something. Chaos, spirit, electricity, creative anarchy -- call it what you like. There's something wild here, and it's worth listening to again and again." --Bruce D. Rhodewalt (L.A. Weekly, 1983)

L.A. TAKEDOWN Our Feeling Of Natural High CD
"When L.A. Takedown hovers over one's ear hairs for the first time, so much is communicated without a word -- there are patient, capable hands at the wheel as one phantoms through a neon Los Angeles of the mind, a Los Angeles that only three harmonized electric guitars can conjure, with a sunset so infinitely variegated in color that only synthetic washes of synth could serve as a fainting couch. Studio magic dust seems to drip off these android dreams projected against the wall -- in person it defies logic that such a sound is coming from humans, but, watching their hands, it's unmistakable -- these are calm warriors sallying forth these sweeping, swooning epics, crowned with triumphant tripartite thunderbolts of wail. For a few fleeting moments, things seem right with the world; a hero has prevailed, the race was won by a hair, the unmanned drones levitate and strafe the coast, rending the coral sky with a psychic boom, shaking loose a few palm fronds and setting off some car alarms but otherwise leaving the sprawl unchanged and teeming. Olson, Our Feeling Of Natural High was engineered and mixed to glossy perfection by Jason Quever and it benefits greatly from the seamless contributions of John Herndon, Jason Quever, Marcus Savino, Miles Wintner, Mose Wintner, Nicholas Krgovich and The Musical Tracing Ensemble. We're even treated to a city-hum lullaby to humanity as a nightcap, with Nedelle Torrisi and Yellow Magic Orchestra's Yukihiro Takahashi on vocals, truly a mint on the pillow of this fantastic soundscape. One shows the more experimental side of Cønjuntø Vacíø: Damien Dubrovnik and Internazionale appear as one of the best examples of the recent Northern experimental electronics and Phase Fatale and Fingering Eve provide two heavy industrial tracks. Molly Nilsson, First Hate, and SDH meanwhile show a much poppier side of the label.

MARSHALL, DOMINIC J Nomad's Land LP
Within the genetic makeup of Darker Than Wax, jazz is the key. After nearly eight years of existence as a label, Darker Than Wax present a record that truly contributes to the pantheon of jazz music. Welcome to Nomad's Land -- a sprawling, dreamy, brutally honest album from British pianist and producer Dominic J Marshall. A veteran of the live the circuit (notably touring with Cinematic Orchestra) and already an accomplished recording artist, Dominic is both virtuosic and classically-trained, yet completely free of any musical or sonic constraints. His sound is infused with electronica and cosmic soul at every turn -- deep, dubby, and drawing on diverse inspirations. Nomad's Land is essentially an honest reflection of the artist's life experiences -- inspired by people, relationships, psychedelic experiences, and human existence. The album also represents Dominic's first outing as a vocalist, bouncing between soulful singing, spoken word, and freestyle rap. This vocal element is crucial to the album's impact, adding a layer of heart and truth to these deeply personal compositions. Deep diversity can be found throughout the record, from the sino-grime inflected "Time Unremembered", to the lush piano-trio vibes on "Feeling", to the glitchy breakbeat jazz hybridity of "DMT". Yet, despite these seemingly disparate shades, Nomad's Land is a singular statement and front-to-back listening experience, unified by beautiful production and grounded in raw musicality.

HARRY WOLFMAN Always 3 EP 12"
After his last release on Dirt Crew in 2017, the label brings back the talented Harry Wolfman. With impressive records on labels like Phonica, Omena, Outplay, and Toy Tonics in the last years he has drawn up a fine new selection of music that spans across many genres and moods. This is also the first release for us in the new year after a lil break and it continues to explore the more eclectic approach they are following for a while now since the outings of artists like Dampé, S3A, and Dan Only. Harry presents an exciting opener for his new EP, together with vocalist Christian Crow he has made the blissful and breaks laden "poppy" good feel tune "A Way You Come Home to Me" that shines a bright light in these darker months. Followed by the deeper club tune "Step by Step", building around yet another vocal recording. This time it's Harry sampling his own voice and looping it into a repetitive piece of good feel House music. "Speaking Raman" is one of these signature Harry tunes, a playful dusty lo-fi piece of music build around a piano theme and embedded in deep bass and driving beats, his sound trademark on all of these more floor orientated tracks on the EP. To close out the record Dirt Crew have added two of his cinematic, ambient electronica works. The haunting "Always 3" is a deep sphere that sucks you in a meditational and soothing womb of sounds. Ending with the electroid cut "Green Trees", it's broken and fragile and gives this indie-tronica track a warm and gentle touch.

BRUCE, GENA ROSE Can't Make You Love Me CD
"Can't Make You Love Me is the debut album from Melbourne based Gena Rose Bruce. Bruce's vocals drive this album; a stirring force amidst the pulsing rhythms, echoes of Mazzy Star and Lynchian undertones. Add to this the masterful restraint in the arrangements and one has an album that is both instantly timeless and unmistakably contemporary. In December 2017, Bruce pulled herself out of a toxic relationship, shifting focus entirely towards her music. 'I quit my job, gave up the room I was renting and left the whole situation. I spent three months alone at a family property in Warrnambool on the south coast of Australia and wrote the album. It was a healing time.' The place was a small weatherboard near the ocean in the middle of nowhere. Secluded and eerily quiet, Bruce credits the album's darker edges in part to this environment; 'It's not a sunny beach town, it's very melancholic. Even in the middle of summer there was no-one around.' But it was here that she regained focus and confidence, entering a period of intense creative output. With fresh perspective, lyrics fell into place, followed by sound. Producer Tim Harvey and Bruce bounced ideas constantly. 'There was lots of demoing and experimenting. We didn't feel I had to fit to any genre -- we just wanted it to be 'me'.' Consequently, Can't Make You Love Me is a distinct and dynamic debut from a young artist with a clear vision. With its infectious melodies, sultry vocal performances and biting lyricism it's thrillingly playful and confessional. Bruce presents a refreshing brand of vulnerability through unfettered explorations of her life choices."

GENEVE, CARLA Carla Geneve LP
"Perth artist Carla Geneve announces the international release of her debut self-titled record. With a captivating live show and relatable lyricism, Geneve hails from the small coastal town of Albany, some 400 kilometers south of Western Australia's capital city of Perth. She cut her teeth playing solo shows in and around regional centers as a 16-year old, bursting onto the WA scene in 2017. After being hailed by Pilerats as one of their '18 Artists to Watch in 2018', her debut single 'Greg's Discount Chemist' was released to overwhelming support. The single was the #1 most played track in 2018 for the Perth community radio station. Key support slots followed for the likes of Gareth Liddiard (The Drones/Tropical Fuck Storm), Cat Power and Kurt Vile. After releasing her second single 'Listening' and garnering praise for her showcases at BIGSOUND, the end of 2018 saw her lead with seven nominations at the 2018 WAM Awards where she won Best Single and Best Rock Act. In 2019 Geneve bettered this, winning four WAM Awards, including Best Rock Act, Best Single, Best Guitarist and Best EP. Geneve's eponymous record was recorded at RADA Studios. Born of smoldering passion and framed by lacerations of heartbreak, the record places her direct and compelling lyricism front and center without sacrificing the dynamism so central to her live performances."

MUDHONEY Pedazo De Pastel LP
"In 1992 Mudhoney left Sub-Pop and signed with Warner Brothers' subsidiary Reprise Records. Having already worked on a batch of songs, we set out to demo what we had. My buddy from high school, Rolf Bertieg, and his friend Jim Collier had set up a studio in the basement of Jim's house in the Wedgwood neighborhood of Seattle, where, armed with a few tunes and several cases of beer we made these recordings. The songs on this record would eventually be re-recorded and released on our album Piece Of Cake, except 'Knock It On The Head' which has remained unreleased until now. (Maybe there's a reason for that, but I'll leave it up to the listener to make that judgment). The energy and the vibe of these recordings reflect how we wish the final Piece Of Cake would have sounded. Hope you enjoy this archaeological dig through our past." --Dan Peters, Mudhoney

ESPLENDOR GEOMETRICO Cinetica CD
Esplendor Geométrico, the influential "industrial" pioneers of the pulsating, hypnotic, and mechanical rhythms, returns with a new album Cinëtica, after their previous Fluida Mekaniko (GR 2140CD/LP, 2016). Based now in Shanghai and Rome, they have not stopped their live performances all over the world in the last two years (Germany, Spain, Russia, UK, France, Italy, and recently Chile) with great success. The material was recorded between 2018- 2019. Cinética gives a twist to the line that the group has followed in their last albums, highlighted by a more elaborate sound. A less raw sound, but without losing the essence of EG: hypnotic rhythms and innovative industrial music, danceable and tribal sometimes. Certain songs like "Acoplamiento Internacional" and "Modulaciones", with Eastern and African voices, remember the classic LP Mekano Turbo (1988) that is considered as one of the best albums of EG. In Cinética, there are filtered and natural voices, broken, mechanical and industrial rhythms, synthesizers layers, percussion, noise, distortion, Mongolian chants... Esplendor Geométrico celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2020 and prepares special editions for that year. They have developed a unique style since 1980 that influenced many "industrial" musicians around the world, including the new trends of industrial techno. CD version includes two bonus tracks; edition of 500.

ELECTRIC SEWER AGE Contemplating Nothingness LP
The Electric Sewer Age project was originally started anonymously by the late Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson together with Coil affiliate and seasoned remixer Danny Hyde, who continued the project together with John Deek, who passed away in 2013. Contemplating Nothingness is the third release by Electric Sewer Age and the second one that Hyde finished alone. With his work as Electric Sewer Age, he explores the vast open space between the dark psychedelic aesthetics that he has helped establishing together with John Balance and his longtime collaborate Christopherson with a postmodernist approach that is deeply rooted in studio practice and sampling. On Contemplating Nothingness, disembodied voices mingle with subdued rhythms, muffled harmonies, or menacing string themes. Over just a little bit more than half an hour, Hyde conjures up traditional and contemporary production techniques and genres like plunderphonics, Leyland Kirby's V/VM project or early vaporwave, all while retaining his singular voice. Throbbing industrial gives way to jazz-inflected quasi-rap, autotune balladry and ethno ambient, before closing on eerily alienated synth pop sounds and a stunning exercise in psychedelic minimalism. Contemplating Nothingness is an album as surreal and beautiful as a half-remembered dream, constantly navigating through the liminal zone of the familiar and the great unknown. 180 gram vinyl.

HUBER, LAURIN Juncture LP
Laurin Huber is a prolific figure in the Swiss underground for experimental music and arts. He has been active as a musician and producer in a slew of projects like Wavering Hands, Frederik, or legendary Swiss institution Krankenzimmer 204. Having just released his first solo release under the R.E.R. moniker on the label Edipo Re, co-founded by Huber and frequent collaborator Rolf Laureijs in 2016, he now presents his first album under his given name. The four tracks on Juncture aim to work with "superimpositions, interactions, interferences, and modes of coexistence," as Huber explains. "I'm generally interested in thought that tries to look at the world beyond dualisms," says the artist. "Contemporary feminist theory and philosophies of difference, the critique of dualities such as nature/nurture, body/mind, object/subject or anorganic/organic are therefore important reference points." On a musical level, this means working with overlaps and interfering layers, field recordings as well as synthesizers and the experienced drummer's knack for intricate rhythms. Over the course of more than half an hour, the producer brings together dreamlike synthesizer pieces with stripped-down, mid-tempo techno pieces, feverish echoes of industrial music, and swelling sounds that are juxtaposed with subtle rhythmic counterpoints. In a world in which dualities reign and polarization increases both socially and culturally, Junction serves as an invitation to deconstruct binary thinking by affirming the coexistence of allegedly opposed elements. It does so with striking emotional ambiguity, sometimes lulling in its audience with soothing sounds and in the next challenging them with an ominous atmosphere. 180 gram vinyl.

ACOLYTES Stress II Cassette
Acolytes exists in the space between detailed sound craft and unruly sonic entropy. A place of unorthodoxy filled with the demolition of language, tropes, functions, machinery. In Stress II, his first Haunter release, London-based producer Denesh Shan creates a meme-like re-imagination of free improvisation through the lens of sample manipulation, drifting from bewildered percussion hits to utter tonal deflagration. This renders the tape a peculiar soup of electronic dirt in which vocal clippings of circle jerk online discourse and glitch-ridden discord mirror a headspace filled with hundreds of conflicting thoughts. Inspiration and sound sources re-trace the producer's personal history, while delving into low-grade internet folklore and transglobal dance music. The chaos generated by such a radical approach is but a folk song for the contemporary experience, a set of angular emotional vectors sublimated into borderline spiritual energy.

HANSEN, MARLA Dust CD
Working as a creative collaborator can be a triple-edged sword: Helping others explore the jungle of ideas inside their heads can be both inspiring and challenging -- but making time for your own creative projects as well is often a delicate balance. The years as side-woman for the likes of Sufjan Stevens, The National, and My Brightest Diamond have made Marla Hansen's journey from 2007's Wedding Day to her new album Dust a faraway honeymoon: time spent recording and touring the world with others before settling in Berlin to focus on her own follow-up, a multi-faceted gem which wears the lines of its lengthy travels like a hard-earned medal. The slow-burn of Dust's inception can be felt as the album plays. The tracks have weight and wisdom like hand-me-down folk songs, but also sparkle with the confidence and the excitement of an artist with new colors on her palette. Wedding Day's breezy innocence has graduated into grown-up chamber music; Hansen's classical background comes into wide focus as solo plucked viola evolves into techni-colour Americana dreamscapes, courtesy of Berlin's Oriel Quartett. The influence of Hansen's new hometown is all over this record, nowhere felt more than with the swashbuckling contributions of Berlin synth pioneer Barbara Morgenstern, crackling under the fireside songs like shards of electric glass. Andi Haberl (The Notwist) lurks under every track, his drums simmering like an approaching army of wooden horses. Taylor Savvy (Peaches, Bonaparte), Knox Chandler (Cyndi Lauper, R.E.M.), and Christian Biegai (Antony and the Johnsons) are all present at this banquet. A transatlantic tapestry sewn together by producer Robbie Moore (L.A. Salami, Jesper Munk) at his Berlin studio complex Impression Recordings. It is this tangled underbelly which allows Dust such an infectious friction. Hansen's iridescent, aching vocal delivery continuously breaks the gloom like a golden thread, effortlessly gliding above the thunderclouds -- a front-row seat in the safety of her silver-lined spy plane with a view of the neon jungle below. Dust falls from an age-old story and lands in a whole new world. CD version includes eight-page booklet; edition of 500.

The label Keplar has been on a long hiatus and is now back with its KeplarRev series presenting vinyl re-issues of essential electronic albums from the '90s and '00s, as well as new recordings by momentous electronic and ambient artists. Drawings by Kaisa Kemikoski; Layout by Marco Ciceri. Remaster by Rashad Becker and vinyl cut by Kassian Troyer at Dubplates & Mastering. Includes download code."Life films us exactly. Our experience of it, though, lies beyond images and descriptions. Emotions, coming in irrational flashes, are non-figurable. We lose our little connection to them very quickly. We look for forms which promise to take us to our own experience. We construct forms with this in mind: that they can take us to meet the subconscious. Multila's construction is principled this way. Fragments of experience, moments without definition or localization are captured within tiny fragments of time and then within one's mind space. We can look into it and see that experience has left some of its data to us. As we receive it, again and again, we are connected and reconnected to certain indefinable moments. Both during and after its recording, Multila is a tool to learn about the unintentional states of us. It is a way to see our own emotional loops. Multila is a soundtrack for vision." --Vladislav Delay (2000)

UN DRAME MUSICAL INSTANTANE L'homme A La Camera/La Glace A Trois Faces CD
"Un Drame Musical Instantané were founded in 1976, featuring Jean-Jacques Birgé, Bernard Vitet and Francis Gorgé. Their aim was to promote collective musical creation, co-signing their albums, which they consider as artworks in themselves, or their live shows which they tried to renew every time they played. Their sound was created with many influences: rock; jazz, and classical modern music; as well as movies or world news; they were the first in France to give a new impetus to live music on silent movies. After having improvised freely for many years, they led a fifteen-piece orchestra from 1981 to 1986, and from 1989 onwards they produced multimedia shows (live video remix on a giant screen, fireworks, choreographies). Still their music was the most important technique, they called their recordings 'blind cinema'. The Drame used to mix acoustic and electronic instruments in real time as well as original instruments built by Vitet (a reed trumpet, a multiphonic French horn, a variable tension double-bass, a giant balafon with frying pans and flower pots keyboard, a fire organ, plexiglas flutes, etc.). After Francis Gorgé left the band in 1992, Birgé and Vitet went on recording and producing with other musicians close to the 'family' such as percussionist, Gérard Siracusa, or multi-instrumentalist, Hélène Sage. Un Drame Musical Instantané always remained independent (they always owned their own recording studio and record label GRRR) and stopped its activities in 2008, with Birgé being the only one active until this day. L'Homme À La Caméra was originally released on GRRR in 1984 and features 15 musicians. In addition to the original album, we offer you a whole new section of previously unreleased music from the time entitled La Glace A Trois Faces which is another soundtrack to a silent movie from 1927."

ASHLEY, ROBERT Automatic Writing LP
Repressed. Lovely Music present a reissue of Robert Ashley's Automatic Writing, originally released as an LP by Lovely Music in 1979. Over the course of Robert Ashley's career his preoccupation with language and the voice took many forms. He became known in his librettos as a wonderful, funny, moving writer. But with Automatic Writing he examines language at a very "primitive" level -- the human impulse make sounds to express his inner state, whether it be regret, embarrassment, fear, or happiness -- even though there is no one else to listen. Talking to oneself.Personnel: Voices - Robert Ashley and Mimi Johnson; Electronics and Polymoog - Robert Ashley; Words: Robert Ashley; Translation: Monsa Norberg; Silhouette: William Farley. The switching circuit was designed and built by Paul DeMarinis. Recorded, produced, and mixed by Robert Ashley at the Center for Contemporary Music, Mills College (Oakland), the American Cultural Center (Paris), and Mastertone Recording Studios (New York). This reissue was remastered and cut, from the original reel-to-reel tape, by Scott Hull, Masterdisk (New York). Manufactured at Record Technology Inc/RTI (California). 180 gram vinyl; Stoughton Old Style sleeve. Includes an insert with a transcription of the words, and the Automatic Writing notes Ashley wrote for Lovely's 1996 CD (that included "Purposeful Lady Slow Afternoon" and "She Was A Visitor")."On Automatic Writing, Robert Ashley composes under the influence of his 'involuntary speech.' (In his liner notes, Ashley revealed that he suffered from 'a mild form of Tourette's.') The piece starts quietly, with scraps of Ashley's mild, tremulous voice arranged next to more fluid French translations and barely-there touches of Moog. After Ashley's phrases lengthen enough to encompass sense-making phrases, a bass-register groove briefly appears, vanishes, then returns. Few pieces so quiet have proven as captivating; many that intend to be equally startling can't capture Ashley's range of surprises." --Seth Colter Walls, from Pitchfork's "Fifty Best Ambient Albums of All Time"

VA From Above Vol. 2 2LP
Back in 2018, Lumière Noire celebrated its first anniversary with a compilation featuring fourteen exclusive tracks by an eclectic group of electronic musicians -- a family portrait of sorts (LN 015LP). A few months later, a second volume of From Above, compiled by the label's artistic director (and DJ) Chloé, once more brings thirteen established acts together with promising upstarts. The lineup for the second volume of From Above is again equally intriguing, offering a crescendo-like track listing. Marc Mélias's fascinating, unsettling "Permanent Waves" provides a serene opening. Pletnev continues on with the playful, hooky "Marco O'Polo", a fundamentally techno track built over a seductive '90s-inspired breakbeat. Douglas Greed supplies "Vancouver", a slice of ambiance à la Boards of Canada, supported by a gripping breakbeat. The rhythmic arpeggio of Israeli producer's Middle Sky Bloom makes his contribution a hypnotic, disconcerting slice of dark disco. Thomass Jackson, a safe bet in the new wave of the Latin-American electronic, proposes "Mithra", a dancefloor incantation to the Antiquity's bull god. With "Bells", Goldmoon delivers a track that is both melodic and nostalgic, tinged with rhythmic samples, Moog basses, and solar backgrounds. Longtime friend of Chloé, Krikor, offers a moment of respite with "Sally Hardesty" (a nod to fans of horror movies), a heavenly and bewitching track that, paradoxically, hints at the highly energetic second half of the compilation. Young French producer Morgan Blanc asserts himself here with "Werde Der Du Bist" ("Become Who You Are"), a song with luminous chords and midtempo rhythms to start the second half of the compilation. Galician producer, DJ, and designer Cora Novoa continues the rollercoaster's ascent with her "Virtual Aesthetics", which once again brings those acid tones. Equally corrosive, but tenser and more percussive, the uncategorizable NSDOS' "AL-G" attempts to give order to a chaotic electronic world full of violence and danger. Rebeka Warrior (half of Kompromat), takes on a more nostalgic vibe with "Ich Komme Zurück", a French/German techno chant. Theus Mago makes a solo comeback with "Idealistic Stone", a most acid of club tracks, rattled by the modulations of the inevitable TB 303. French electro-rock stalwart Yan Wagner's dancefloor alter ego The Populists' "Prehistoric Lemurs" gives an almost Orientalizing twist to Kraftwerk's techno-pop. "Instant Track", by impromptu encounter between Hervé Carvalho, Jacques Bon, and Demian named Acid Love Triangle, releases the pressure with a long, bittersweet reverie. Also features Middle Sky Boom.

VONTIER, INIGO El Hijo Del Maiz Remixes 12"
From the moment of its release, Iñigo Vontier's El Hijo Del Maiz (LN 024LP, 2019) has become one of the most gripping albums of the moment. With South American and Middle Eastern sounds and his conception of music as ritual, the Mexican DJ keeps electronica in check with a valid mix of influences. The EP El Hijo Del Maiz Remixes marks the end of an episode which started, in good company, last autumn on the Lumière Noire label. The second track, "Bo Ni Ke," is distinguished by its original -- almost implausible -- universe, with a Japanese-inflected vocal filter and oriental flutes taking the beats into a crazy trance. Leaning on a 4/4 rhythm, Simple Symmetry's remix of the track is also very playful (Vontier recently remixed "Nar" for Simple Symmetry). The Moscow duo pulls the track over to another, less terrestrial, more psychedelic universe, in their well-identified ethno-underground style. The remix of "Bo Ni Ke" by Nicola Cruz, a French-born Ecuadorian producer, enlivens the track by playing on the sounds of voices and South American percussion. The sounds here overlap with the demonological whims of Vontier but also those of Nicolas Jaar. The first track from the album, "Xu Xu" has been remixed by Roman Flügel, allowing a vinyl release of this incredible track. One could pick out the science of this headliner from a million. Flügel has been on the electronic scene since the early days, learning the ropes at prestigious labels Playhouse, Dial, and Klang. He has recently enhanced some emblematic tracks by Daniel Avery, Koze, Âme, Radio Slave, and C.A.R. and here once again the pioneer of techno is working miracles to create a more cerebral version of this track. Concluding the EP with Thomass Jackson, his co-founder of the label Calypso Records, Vontier offers up a genre-busting version of "Marijuana," like an ataxic play time, deliberately smoky for an explicitly licentious title.

CAPPELLATO, TOMMASO Aforemention 2LP
2020 repress. Italian musician, producer, DJ, and composer Tommaso Cappellato is a musical maverick - running the gamut from free-form techno to hip-hop production and jazz improvisation. Mentored by jazz visionaries Harry Whitaker and Michael Carvin (Pharoah Sanders), and a collaborator with techno master Donato Dozzy, Tommaso's seemingly unorthodox breadth of style and vision offers a truly unique new school artist. From building his jazz chops as a resident drummer in NYC, to hip hop excursions alongside Brooklyn MC Yah Supreme; to traveling to Senegal to meld with local world music masters; to leading his own award-winning spiritual jazz project Astral Travels; to collaborating with experimental electronica and techno artist Rabih Beaini and visionary Egyptian producer Maurice Louca; to now presenting his solo artist project Aforemention, Tommaso is the modern renaissance man. With Aforemention, he brings together his lifetime of artistic exploration and exposure to create his own concept of a jazz-informed experimental electronic soundscape. Tommaso started his music journey on piano and at age 11, he transitioned to drums. He studied under many of the jazz greats in NYC and soon became a regular fixture on the scene there, subsequently touring the US, Japan, China, Australia and Europe with multiple projects. His fascination for sounds outside the jazz realm led him to this new project - asking himself what would happen if he created alone, embracing everything from inspirations to moments of randomness and finding his own musical identity in that process. Using drums, analog synths, and his own voice, Tommaso has created a body of work that evokes inner spaces, outer realms and new ideas. Aforemention takes in all of Tommaso's past experiences and sees him creating a one-man journey through sound. He is joined on the album by three guests: legendary drummer Victor Lewis provides spoken word on "Team Ball", Inglewood, CA native and Solange-collaborator Nia Andrews provides vocals on the ode to freedom, "Fly", and Detroit/NYC vocalist Dulcinea Detwah brings freeform hip hop verse to "Get Set Free". Everything else you hear is performed solo by Tommaso Cappellato, mixed by Donato Dozzy and mastered by Neel. "One man, live on stage, concocting wild sonic mash-ups of the jazz and techno traditions" --Mark de Clive-Lowe. "Connecting deeply with his vision of time, texture, rhythm, space, and soul!" --Carlos Nino.

ZELIENOPLE Hold You Up LP
For their first album since 2015, Zelienople turns on the current time with a record of low-key decaying songs wrapped in hypnotic, driving rhythms. The Chicago-based trio is back with a stunner of an underground pop album. Their most reverb heavy bombast is gone in favor of pure Earth-bound intimate tunes that feel like they summon the spirit of the late Mark Hollis. Shrouded tribal percussion and rippling vocals are at the forefront, while looped atmospheres echo in the distance. Since the release of their last album, vocalist Matt Christensen has been known for pouring his soul out in countless Bandcamp releases of singer/songwriter, experimental, and ambient offerings. It's hard to keep up with him, but one can't but to admire the dedication and extremely high-quality of it all. Mike Weis on the other hand is less prolific, but has become a focused student of Korean Shaman and Buddhist music, often performing in Zen-based percussive rituals when he's not involved in side projects of improvisational music. Brian Harding is perhaps the most anonymous of the three, yet he is the steady, grounding element on bass that keeps them as one. Together, they create a beautifully realized own voice that feels especially close on their new album. Hold You Up is like a slow walk through a withering world, though one with a sense of refuge. This is music with heart -- navigating darkness through light. Includes download code; Edition of 400.

HOFFSTADT, MARLON Planet Love 2LP
Marlon Hoffstadt's debut album, Planet Love, marks the ninth release on his label since its launch in 2017. Having established his signature sound over the years, navigating through feelings from house, disco, trance, and Euro-dance, Planet Love showcases these sensibilities in an album format. While he seemed to not take himself too seriously throughout his past releases, naming records Ready For Take Hoff (MIDNIGHT 007EP, 2019) and Der Hoffmaster, Marlon now touches on a topic which, over time became increasingly serious and important to him. Having dealt with anxiety and panic attacks in the past, he developed his very own mantra, which one could already see in projects such as his phone-free Savour The Moment events at Berlin's Renate. "Be kind. Be humble. Take care. Give love. Because only love will set you free". This simple but powerful mantra, which kicks off this album, is not only his own guide through insecurity and fears that he faces in his life as a musician, father, student, and promoter. More than that, it is a reminder that true success is not defined by heavy touring, big money, and fame. Instead, being successful means to be kind and caring towards yourself, your fellow humans, and the environment; most importantly love is stronger than anything else. Features artwork from Hermann Reimer, Ewige Gärtner.

MUM Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK (20th Anniversary Edition) 3LP
2020 repress; triple LP version. Gatefold sleeve. Morr Music present a 20th Anniversary Edition of múm's Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK. In 1999, on December 23rd to be precise, the electronic music landscape changed forever. On that day, the now legendary Icelandic band múm released their debut album Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK. The thing is though, back in the day, hardly anybody realized. It was Christmas after all, people were busy with potentially more important things and didn't pay attention to some kids selling records on Reykjavík's high street. Thankfully, those ten tracks weren't overlooked for long. On the contrary: the album went on to become one of the most influential building blocks of what back then was called electronica and today is considered an art form playing a crucial and important role in shaping and defining the rich electronic music culture of the 21st century. Now, 20 years after the record dropped onto planet Earth, Morr Music is re-issuing the remastered album with its original artwork, adding newly commissioned re-works: a note-for-note representation of "Smell Memory" by Kronos Quartet (with additional drums by múm's Samuli Kosminen), a gentle reinterpretation of "Random Summer" by acclaimed pianist and composer Hauschka and an otherworldly new version of "Ballad Of The Broken String" recorded by label mate Sóley. In 1999, electronic music was in full bloom. Yet the concept of using electronic sounds in acoustic-based productions (or vice versa) was still in its infancy. Many producers were trying, most of them failed. The results felt often forced, fabricated, unimaginative, random, and forgettable. New ideas require new mindsets after all. With Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK, múm established a new approach in music production. Instead of setting a fixed agenda and working with a distinct hierarchy for their sonic palette, Gyða Valtýsdóttir, Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir, Gunnar Örn Tynes, and Örvar Smárason let each instrument and sound source be true to itself, creating an ever-evolving universe of sonic bliss. Combining drill-and-bass-inspired beat-chopping, future-informed DSP-programming, ethereal vocal work, indie rock's boominess, folk music's soulful brittleness, and a lofty feeling for melody and arrangement, the album is a rare example of musical transcendence and remains impossible to categorize. Many of the ideas formulated and recorded for the album quickly became an integral part of the canonical self-conception musicians around the world were and still are aspiring to. Includes four remixes produced in the early 2000s by Ruxpin, Bix, µ-Ziq, and Biogen.

SLOW REELS Farewell Islands CD
Slow Reels combines Ian Hawgood's love of reel-to-reel tape machines and vintage synthesizers with James Murray's melodicism and richly textured digital sound design. Their Morr Music debut, Farewell Islands, is an arresting, fluorescing album that blends full-frequency drone-scaping with a slow-burning ambient minimalism. Ian and James met on the UK minimal music scene releasing each others' music on their Home Normal and Slowcraft labels. Their recording collaboration began remotely while Ian lived in Warsaw, spending long nights with his collection of reel-to-reel machines: "I created a number of loops with an old and sadly dying Akai which was noisy and would stutter quite a bit. I also found myself using older tape on cracked reels and the effects of this really helped develop a newer path for my own work." James began to weave piano, guitar and synthesizers into the material from his London studio, combining the two artists' tonalities into something so unexpectedly compelling it took them both by surprise. Ian then transferred these manipulations back onto tape, further refining and defining the sound during deep dive experimental analogue mastering sessions. The role of old technology in Slow Reels' work lends a sense of decay and transience sure to resonate with admirers of William Basinski, Rafael Anton Irisarri, and Benoît Pioulard, but the underlying melodies set a clear counterpoint: a longing for the vivid is deeply grounded within this music. The four cinematic, long-form movements of Farewell Islands possess a delicate romanticism and emotional urgency that engages and gradually overwhelms the listener. The islands of the title are both real and notional, as James explains: "places of meaning to both of us in our lives, found now only out of time, belonging outside the present and out of reach." This nostalgic farewell also marks a fresh beginning, as the duo's ongoing Brighton-based studio sessions generate further reels of unearthly electronic landscapes that seem to hiss, warble and granulate their own way onto tape.

PARAISO El Corte Final LP+CD
Paraiso was one of the most essential bands of the Spanish new wave scene in the '80s also known as La Movida. Their song "Para Ti" became an anthem for a generation and, with just a couple of singles released and a couple of tracks on a compilation, the band reached mythical status despite their very short career. It is only now, over 40 years after its recording, that Munster Records present Paraiso's lost album that never got released at the time. Featuring a track list as selected by the band, El Corte Final comprises the result of two different recording sessions from 1979, showing how fresh, fun, and also potentially commercial the group was. Paraiso recorded a hard to beat selection of pop gems under the influence of The Modern Lovers, Devo (whose song "Mongoloid" they would cover), or The Specials. Its members would later join many other famed Spanish bands such as Dinarama, Bólidos, Ejecutivos, Radio Futura, Décima Víctima, La Mode, Casinos... FLIPPER'S, THE Discotheque LP
Munster Records present the first facsimile reissue of The Flipper's Discotheque, originally released in 1966. Don't let their elegant suits sported on the front cover confuse you: The Flippers were ambassadors of the British Invasion in their native Colombia, but the strength of garage music, surf instrumentals, and psychedelia quickly became their true hallmarks. They are, undoubtedly, one of the essential bands of Colombian rock, as also are The Speakers or Los Yetis. You can easily imagine The Flipper's reigning on the hippest stages of Colombia in the late '60s, performing very rhythmic songs full of fuzzy and reverb infected guitars and fueling the audience's desire to dance wildly. That's how things worked back then. In 1964, Arturo Astudillo and Carlos Martínez formed the student group The Thunderbirds in Bogotá. One year later, after the line-up was enlarged with Miguel Durier and Guillermo Acevedo, the group was renamed as The Flipper's after the American TV series Flipper. Medellín based label Codiscos signed them after publishing an EP with several versions of current hits and soon released their first album. "Impromptu Jazz a Go Go, the first song on Discotheque, their debut LP, already drops some leads about where the band's musical interests were in 1966, the year this album was published. The guitars quickly catch the listener with the characteristic dynamism of the dolphin that gave name to the group while they share the leadership of the song with an energetic and forceful drumming. It somehow anticipates other sensational instrumental cuts on the album such as "Dance to Go Go" or "Master Flipper" that give full meaning to the title of the LP. There is also some room for the cover versions on this album: the timeless "Winchester Cathedral" or The Yardbirds' top hit "Over Under Sideways Down" are translated into Spanish with greater or lesser fortune while classics such as "Route 66" retain their original lyrics and charming. The relationship with their record company would be extended to one more LP, Psicodelicias, while the style of the group was beginning to move towards more progressive sounds. In the mid-70s The Flipper's would dissolve temporarily to later continue for a short period of time in the early '80s.

RICHMAN & THE MODERN LOVERS, JONATHAN Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers LP
"Born in Natick, Massachusetts, singer, songwriter and guitarist Jonathan Richman began playing music and writing his own songs in the mid '60s. While in Boston, Richman formed the Modern Lovers, a proto-punk garage rock band. Other notable members of the group were keyboard player Jerry Harrison and drummer David Robinson, who later joined Talking Heads and the Cars, respectively. In 1975, Richman moved to California to record as a solo singer/songwriter. In January 1976, Richman put together a new version of the Modern Lovers, which included original Modern Lovers drummer, David Robinson, along with former Rubinoos bassist Greg 'Curly' Keranen and Leroy Radcliffe on guitar. The albums produced by the new group found Richman turning away from electric rock music towards gentler acoustic textures, with a strong rooting in 50s rock and roll. The album Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers was released in May 1976, three months before the earlier The Modern Lovers sessions were finally released -- known as their eponymous self-titled debut studio album. Available as a limited edition of 1000 individually numbered copies on silver vinyl."

TSVI Inner Worlds 2LP
2018 release. Nervous Horizon presents TSVI's debut album: Inner Worlds. The album is about reconnecting to one's true self and the discovery of the inner worlds: it is born from an ongoing artistic journey, which began in TSVI's childhood. The artist grew up with parents who practice Hinduism, which is quite unusual for an Italian family. In most recent times he was hugely inspired by his partner's religious and musical background, after she exposed him to Middle Eastern music and Sufi ideologies. TSVI started creating tracks that were influenced by belly dance percussionists such as Emad Sayyah and Hossam Ramzy, combined with dancehall, Tarraxo, and trance. The album is largely influenced by the role of music in transcendental Sufi practices and resembles an inner journey through different states of meditation and self-discovery. Vedic and Tantric knowledge are also important here. Each track is a state of mind from the opening one, "Root", to the last one, "Crown", as they represent the first and last Chakras and all the other states found in-between. Get ready to embark on a journey through mind, body, and soul. Features Miragal, Luru, and WWWINGS.

DJ JM No Days Off EP 12"
Lithuanian producer Mantas Povilaika, aka DJ JM, has announced new five-tracker, No Days Off EP -- his inaugural record for blossoming club label, Nervous Horizon. After first starting to emerge on the London club scene radar back in 2015, Nervous Horizon label heads TSVI and Wallwork played some early JM material at their debut London Boiler Room session in 2016, sparking a relationship that has since birthed collaborations on TSVI EPs Sacred Drums (NH 005EP, 2016) and Rambo (NH 007EP, 2018). After releasing a further two full EPs on NKC's hard drum label Even The Strong, No Days Off EP forms a natural extension of his work with TSVI, only this time more extensive and detailed. From the anthemic, late '90s euphoria of the title-track to the searing club energy of "Mad Move" featuring TSVI to the dark, pulsing techno flicker of "Bar Bell", it is an EP forged at peak time and only tempered by mystical EP closer, "Original Taste" -- a track inspired by local Lithuanian club sounds and faraway worlds.

RELATIVELY CLEAN RIVERS Relatively Clean Rivers LP
2020 repress; LP version. Former Beat Of The Earth leader Phil Pearlman assembled Relatively Clean Rivers in the early '70s and eventually released this excellent rural rock album in 1975. Although Pearlman's first recorded effort was a surf/hot rod 45 entitled Chrome Reversed Rails which appeared on the Fink label in the mid-'60s, it was with Beat Of The Earth that he began to forge a distinctive musical voice. The band was one of the earliest-known experimental bands with a sound reminiscent of their East Coast counterparts, The Velvet Underground, whose influence is often discernible on Relatively Clean Rivers. That said, RCR is recognized by those fortunate enough to have heard it as one of the very finest albums of the era, with a clearly-defined American sound akin to The Grateful Dead in all their American Beauty pomp or CSNY circa Déjà Vu. An album highly recommended to anyone even remotely interested in '70s West Coast music or simply great music in general. Finally available on 180 gram vinyl once again, and comprehensively remastered using the latest 48-bit technology.

SCULPTURE Projected Music 5"
Sculpture meets Psyché Tropes for a post-transitory broadcast in reductionist methodology, exploring the non-standard definitions from the other side. Projected Music is a five-inch zoetrope picture disc containing 26 locked grooves. Each loop is 1.33 seconds in duration cut at 45rpm reaching a total playing time of 34.58 seconds although the loops are intended to be played at any speed. In the possession of two or more disks, the listener can interact with a modular album whereby the source material is open to interpretation. Despite its minimalist size and composition, this release is intended as an LP. With the expansive nature of the turntable, there are almost limitless possibilities. The pressing plant strongly advised against making a five-inch locked groove, animated picture disc due to its low-fidelity and that warping will occur. Rather than taking their advice, Sculpture and Psyche Tropes have embraced these artifacts and you should as well. Remixes by Maria Chavez, Philip Jeck, Janek Schaefer, Mariam Rezaei, Merkaba Macabre, Claudius, Graham Dunning, and Tom Richards accompany the five-inch as a free download. Projected Reworks is eight commissioned tracks by artists who use the turntable as an instrument. Using only physical copies of Sculpture's five-inch locked groove animated picture disc Projected Music, Dan Hayhurst's sonic material containing 26 loops are transfigured into new imaginings by some of the most prominent and inventive artists working in the field. Sculpture is electronic music producer, Dan Hayhurst, and visual artist, Reuben Sutherland, on a freewheeling excursion through temporary forms of digital composition, analog electronics, comic strips, sci-fi, pop, psychedelia, and multisensory perception.

GRAEWE, GEORG Stills and Stories CD
"Right from the start, stills and stories, pianist Georg Graewe's first solo disc in more than a decade, proves one thing: this man's brain works quicker than yours. So do his fingers. His feet, hands, and inner life just might as well. Not that speed counts, mind you. But when you dive into this dense, elusive, and, ultimately, riveting 2010 recording from Bochum, Germany, you sense that Graewe, back in his hometown, is pushing things to the limit: his own resources, his listener's ability to absorb art, and, at 79 minutes, the limitations of the compact disc itself." --Greg Buium, Point of Departure (June, 2015)

FIRE! ORCHESTRA Actions LP
LP version. Original score by Krzysztof Penderecki. New reading and conduction by Mats Gustafsson. The first (and until now only?) recorded interpretation of Krzysztof Penderecki's Actions For Free Jazz Orchestra took place in 1971 at Donaueschingen and featured the New Eternal Rhythm Orchestra, assembled by Don Cherry for the occasion and conducted by the great Polish composer. That orchestra also consisted of 14 musicians, including international jazz heavyweights such as Kenny Wheeler, Peter Brötzmann, Thomasz Stanko, Terje Rypdal, Han Bennink, and others. Don Cherry himself did not perform. Penderecki had heard the Globe Unity Orchestra a couple of years earlier and was fascinated by the possibilities of working with musicians from a different background and with other perspectives than he was used to from the classical world. The challenge for all involved was to find the right balance between composition and improvisation. The idea was initially met with some skepticism from the musicians, but this soon gave way to acceptance and even eagerness. The new, extended reading by Mats Gustafsson and Fire! Orchestra was commissioned by the Sacrum Profanum festival in Kraków, Poland in 2018. The idea was to place this classic piece in a contemporary setting, with a new approach and a new body of sound. However, the original score was used as a platform for the new reading, connecting history with the present. A score in this context is most often of a graphic nature to present reference points, visualized on the sleeve by Kim Hiorthøy's cut-up adaption of Mats Gustafsson's score. It's also worth noticing that the instrumentation is more or less identical to that of 1971, the main difference being a tuba replacing one of the trombones. Finally, this new reading clocks in at 40 minutes, and is thus considerably longer than the 1971 version. This line-up of the Fire! Orchestra is unique in that it's the first time without founding members and singers Mariam Wallentin and Sofia Jernberg. It's also the first time with guitarist Reine Fiske.

FLUGEL, ROMAN Garden Party 12"
Roman Flügel's debut on Running Back under his given name (Roman IV doesn't count) is a wonderful confirmation of his outstanding position in the past, present and future of electronic music. Needless to mention all his merits (or monikers for that sake) and excessive in almost any style, Garden Party highlights his competence in the dance hall and sees Flügel in a jovial mood. Presented by someone who knows the roots of it all, you can hear and envision traces of disco, stories of Manchester's Hacienda, memories of the night life in Frankfurt as well as the reflections in and of US-American mirror balls. But simultaneously, the rich content here also shows the blossoms of the seed, if one avoids the danger of retromania. This is serious fun and as uplifting as a garden party should be. Or based loosely on the creator's thoughts: if ABC's blue-eyed soul stems from punk and new wave, Flügel's "Look Of Love" is a direct result of more than 25 years of kick drums.

DEAS Index 12"
Greek-born, Krakow-based DEAS is a producer of unusual stylistic and emotional breadth, possibly the result of growing up with a range of cultural and geographical influences. His fourth EP on Second State Audio continues his impressive run, a mosaic of moods and textures that coalesces into a cohesive, compelling whole. "Space Race" brings a futuristic cosmos to mind, a track that's at once urgent and foreboding, yet light on its feet. Arpeggiating laser synths glide over peppy drum patterns in a manner that encourages dancefloor mayhem. "Apart" is a little more sinister but still highly danceable, with a propulsive bassline, noodling lashes of acid and an almost psychedelic vibe. "Index" strips it back and places the drums front-and-center in a less-is-more piece designed to keep the party chugging, while "DRMS", another percussion-based track, adds trippy effects to enhance those slightly sideways moments. "Radiation", meanwhile, is a journey in the true sense of the word, a track that morphs from atmospheric to tense and back again in an arrangement that's uncluttered, yet highly effective at creating a sense of delicious unease. This EP is another collection of weapons from an internationally acclaimed techno producer and DJ.

RHYW Sing Sin 12"
Not long after his Seilscheibenpfeiler debut, 2019's acclaimed Lurk Late EP, techno renaissance man Alex Tsiridis returns with four new expertly crafted killer tracks. He's changing gear and style here compared to his last record. If Lurk Late was a kind of late-night soundtrack, this release is more concerned with twisted peak time energy. There's no straight and safe 4/4 beats in these tracks, but they hit you with equal force. "Bao Cecile" sets the scene with stabbing percussion and mysteriously cut-up vocals before "Casualty" steps it up and "Just In Case" hits the red zone with fierce and powerful cascades of kick drums. It's a rhythmic workout on the surface, but as you listen closely, a heap of sound layers drift in and out. The title track closes the record much slower and weirder, underlining this producer's urge to never sound the same.

AYYUKA Somestr LP
Ayyuka was founded in the year 2001; they started to make their own music which was mostly improvisation and influenced by a lot of different styles. Sometime later the band came to its name naturally which, Ayyuka, one which has has two meanings: ''to the highest part of the sky" and "an idiom to tell that a secret has been revealed." After their university years, they moved to Istanbul and started to perform their music at some live venues. Since their self-titled debut album release, the band have performed in various music festivals and venues in a number of cities including Istanbul, Berlin, Lyon, Sao Paulo. They also have opened for artists like Jonathan Richman, R.E.M., and Sonic Youth. With very direct live performance energy apparent in their compositions, Ayyuka fuse characteristic elements from a variety of genres such as Anatolian rock, arabesque, surf rock, punk, spaghetti western, psychedelic rock, and funk. They released their second studio album Kiraci Odalari in October 2013. Sömestr is Ayyuka's third studio album, and the sound moves between psychedelic rock, afro rhythms, and plenty else besides. The album was made by editing improvised recording sessions that they recorded at their studio.

VA Panama! 2: Latin Sounds, Cumbia Tropical & Calypso Funk On The Isthmus 1967-77 2LP
2020 repress. Soundway present the second volume in their Panama! series, showcasing the unique tropical music created in Panama during the fertile decades of the 1960s and 1970s. Panama is one of the world's great crossroads -- a bridge between North and South America, and home to the great canal that links the Caribbean and the Pacific. After soaking up the varied influences of Panama's diverse population, the dancefloors and bars spat out a heady mix that took in the raw vallenato of neighboring Colombia, the soul and funk of America, the calypso of Trinidad and the son and rumba of Cuba, all combined and re-styled in a uniquely Panamanian fashion, making Panama a central spoke in the wheel of Caribbean music. Writer and compiler Roberto Ernesto Gyemant travelled throughout the country in search of elusive records and reclusive musicians, tracking down hopeful tips and half-remembered names and addresses. Two years of digging through dusty warehouses and old radio stations in search of crackly records and dusty photos led to an exhaustive look at the musical culture of this fascinating country. If you think salsa is the sum total of Latin American music, then think again -- the hot sound of Panamanian musica tipica and calypso Español throws everything into the mix for a non-stop journey through Afro rhythms, carnival sounds, tipica soul, and cumbia madness. Listen to the heavy tamborito rhythm of Los Silvertones and you'll hear where the instantly-recognizable, syncopated beat of modern-day reggaeton was born. Check the countrified re-versioning of Willie Colon's classic "La Murga De Panama" -- a perfect riposte to those that think Latin music begins and ends with Shakira. Listen to "La Escoba" by Alfredo Y Su Salsa Montañera and see that the currently in-vogue sound of cumbia owes as much to Panama as it does Colombia. Also features Papi Brandao Y Su Conjunto Aires Tableno, Maximo Rodriguez Y Sus Estrellas Panameñas, Papi Brandao Y Sus Ejecutivos, Skorpio, Los Superiores, Idamerica Ruiz Con Osvaldo Ayalla Y Sus Conjunto, Los Revolucionarios (Soul Revolution), The Duncan Brothers, The Soul Fantastics, The Exciters, Meñique El Panameño Con Bush Y Los Magnificos, Camilo Azuquita, Los Papacitos, Sir Jablonsky, Lord Cobra Y Los Hnos. VA 391 Vol. 7: Emilia Romagna - Voyage Through The Deep '80s Underground In Italy 2CD
The seventh episode of the Voyage Through The Deep '80s Underground In Italy. Almost a couple of years in the making, this is a truly attempt to describe what happened in Emilia Romagna in the '80s. As for the other collections of the 391 series, forget the term "best of", this is an outstanding compilation, a hidden history finally revealed. A series of bands long forgotten plus a handful of future underground stars, all in all a necessary path to join with the socio-political clutches of the late '70s/early '80s and the rise of the post-punk phenomena. In the mid-seventies, while the punk revolution was culturally resetting the system on which the music business was based, a new musical consciousness was taking shape. There was a need for a change, the idea to catch with the future through a brilliant agenda, and finally escape the diktat of the dinosaur-rock (or progressive whatsoever). The post punk, or in a broader sense the new wave, was a re-evolution of the underground scene in which a generation found itself, a kind of intellectual rebirth. Straight in the heart of the region there were a series of fully equipped bands devoted to the holy triad of Joy Division/Cure/Bauhaus. SLUM OF LEGS Slum Of Legs LP
Slum of Legs are a queer, feminist noise-pop DIY band. They are Alex, Emily, Kate, Maria, Mich, and Tamsin. Slum of Legs write songs about ghosts, architecture, gender, loneliness, and hair envy. You can dance to all of them. Sometimes they sound like The Shaggs, Slant 6, and La Düsseldorf playing at an impromptu party in space. One of their songs is a live séance. Slum of Legs have performed on a Norwegian mountain and in many, many basements. They like pylons and onstage pile-ons. They're interested in modernist architecture, art. and literature. Slum of Legs use collage and cut-up in their artwork and this also reflects the fractured nature of our songs and how the six bandmates, who all bring completely different influences to the band, have been stuck into a blender with the controls jammed. They are a giant pop-psych, punk monster with twelve legs. Their songs are melodic and dissonant, anthemic, and experimental. Slum of Legs' self-titled debut album is a manifesto for compassion and defiance in a confusing, unrestful world.Praise for Slum of Legs: "a kind of fiendish exploratory outsider pop music that recognises no limitations... weird, dissonant, home-made, different from anything you'd make." --Stereo Sanctity; "an enticing bunch, fusing influences ranging from riot grrl, classical and krautrock." --Drowned in Sound; "a six-headed eruption of disillusionment and reality checking... ready to take on everyone and anyone." --Collapse Board; "the post everything band you didn't even know you'd been waiting to hear." --Impose Magazine

"The Dusseldorf punk scene was without compare in the years 1977 to 1979 and Male were there in the thick of it, etching their name into German musical history. I was magnetically drawn towards the punk phenomenon back in 1977 and through Bilk's integral role in the movement, I was lucky enough to get right up close . . . Somehow, I heard about a gig in an assembly hall and that's where I saw Male, a burning revelation, rising above all the tiresome Stones cover bands! Loud, dirty, new and different! Setting the German flag alight brought the gig to a spectacular conclusion. I offered my services as a roadie for the gigs that followed in and around Düsseldorf . . . Having broken through the inner-city walls, Male were invited to Berlin for the opening of SO36 where they shared the bill with local Berlin heroes PVC, Din A Testbild, Ffurs and Düsseldorf's Mittagspause. The Male track 'Polizei' is included on a sampler commemorating the event. Next up, the 'Into the Future' festival in Hamburg saw them in triumphant mode alongside Mittagspause and Kleenex, earning them a headliner slot at the next In die Zukunft -- live albums documented the respective performances. Back in Düsseldorf, a record import store gave Male permission to rehearse in their cellar as they geared up for the production of their LP. Earlier tracks and a few newer songs added up to a superb Male album, from the cut-up lyrics on 'KH 3' to the hypnotic intro of 'Ein Tag Düsseldorf' and the cult track 'Zensur & Zensur'. Time was racing by and Male arguably reached their zenith as backup for The Clash on the London Calling tour. As the air raid siren rang out on 'Ich hör schon die Sirenen', Kosmo Vinyl (Clash roadie), Joe Strummer and Mick Jones stopped in their tracks to take a closer look at Male on stage. FENNESZ Agora LP
2020 repress. Agora is Christian Fennesz's first solo album since Mahler Remix (TONE 052LP, 2014) and Bécs (EMEGO 165CD/LP, 2014). Fennesz writes: "It's a simple story. I had temporarily lost a proper studio workspace and had to move all my gear back to a small bedroom in my flat where I recorded this album. It was all done on headphones, which was rather a frustrating situation at first but later on it felt like back in the day when I produced my first records in the 1990s. In the end it was inspiring. I used very minimal equipment; I didn't even have the courage to plug in all the gear and instruments which were at my disposal. I just used what was at hand." Fennesz uses guitar and computer to create shimmering, swirling electronic sound of enormous range and complex musicality. His lush and luminous compositions are anything but sterile computer experiments. They resemble sensitive, telescopic recordings of rainforest insect life or natural atmospheric occurrences, an inherent naturalism permeating each piece. He lives and works in Vienna. Recorded at Kaiserstudios, Vienna, August, September 2018. "Rainfall": vocals by Katharina Caecilia Fennesz; "Agora": field recordings Manfred Neuwirth, vocals Mira Waldmann. Photography and design by Jon Wozencroft. Mastered by Denis Blackham at Skye. Full color inner and outer sleeve. CHASSOL Ludi 2LP
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve; includes movie and music download code. Christophe Chassol is reshuffling the deck. After making his name known worldwide with three magnificent Ultrascores compositions -- Nola Che?rie in 2011, Indiamore in 2013, and Big Sun in 2015 -- working with Solange and Frank Ocean, and playing the most prestigious halls. He's taking his quest to arrange reality even further with Ludi, his new project that includes an album, film, and show. It's play -- an all-important word in music -- that underscores this impressive, masterful construction freely inspired by Hermann Hesse's The Glass Bead Game (1931). Everything is part of the melody: a playground or basketball players in the suburbs, an arcade in Tokyo, a roller coaster, singer Crystal Kay and rapper Kohh. Solo musicians were filmed in rehearsal, like flautist Jocelyn Mienniel and the composer's partner, drummer Mathieu Edward, who managed to reprise on stage. Chassol drew from the great German author's utopic book, where music, mathematics, aesthetics, and spirituality intermingle, to create a passionate work produced by Bertrand Burgalat's label Tricatel that once again justifies his special place in the musical landscape. With Ludi, Chassol directs his own round of Hermann Hesse's game, taking on the title of Magister Ludi, master of The Glass Bead Game. With this double-album, Chassol realizes his ambition: to compose unprecedented music that fills us with joy and prompts reflection.

SAFIYYA Shareek Hayaat LP
2013 release. Shareek Hayaat is the second album by Safiyya, the duo formed by Brad Rose and Pat Murano. Brad Rose is the head of the Digitalis label, and he is also well known for his work as The North Sea, Charlatan, and Altar Eagle. Pat Murano, head of Kelippah Records, has also worked under the name Decimus, and as a member of the venerable No Neck Blues Band. When Max Ernst said that the forest was a supernatural insect and a drawing board, Pat Murano and Brad Rose hadn't been born yet, but this odd couple of fine woodcutters would one day grow up to prove his point with sounds. What kind of sounds? Electronic and organic, the sounds derived from the intricate and layered process one can expect from wizards like Brad Rose and Pat Murano. Do you need to speak Arabic to decode their stuff? Maybe... The title of each track seems to allude to some kind of archetype and to describe a stage in some sort of ritual. Maybe there's a specific meaning tied to the words, but feel free to project your own. The important thing to keep in mind is that there is some kind of black rite happening in the deepest part of the woods (or the desert), and Murano and Rose are the ones in charge of setting the mood and deranging the senses. Hacky mediums need not apply. This is how you conjure the spirits and direct them through sound; this here indeterminate musical object is the real deal. Let's say music is a walled country and noise is the barbarous wasteland where cartographers fear to tread. In between, there's a wild and dark forest, a forest of terror and wonder: that's Safiyya, that's Shareek Hayaat. You can picture it as a shape-shifting image of the forest as a supernatural bug, doodled on a drawing board with the alchemy of musical and non-musical instruments. If you like brilliance with your weirdness, and you'd like to take a trip down to the land between music and noise, this one's for you. Includes download coupon; edition of 300.

PLACE, JAMES Voices Bloom LP
2017 release. A distillation of cultural memory through electronic process, James Place, the creative guise of New York native Phil Tortoroli, returns with his third release for Umor Rex. The sonic realization of love and loss, re-sculpted for the post-modern age, pursuing his glacial take on techno into newly intimate depths. Departing from a line in TS Elliot's Four Quartets "the moment in and out of time", its works take form through the haze of a dream. Over the course of several months Tortoroli tracked heaps of live stereo jams at home, jamming on his drum machine, sampler, polysynth, and effects setup. Poring over these hours of hazy jams, Tortoroli heard himself straining for an additional voice to further emote. Rifling through a vast library of old bounces and experiments, Tortoroli rediscovered the music of Sam Sally to complete Voices Bloom, resampled live and again "subdued into explorations of an old practice". Voices Bloom is the musicality of cultural collage, immensely personal and intimate, arms stretched out, gathering diverse sonic worlds. The artist and his craft as a self-reflexive lens for an electronic age -- a sonic patchwork heard from afar -- impressions of memory, drawn close to the heart. Within the album's cool displaced tones, rise nostalgic romances, drifting rhythmic works which defy the beat. A world where time enters multiple frames, those possible, literal, implied, forgotten, and remembered anew. The final results on Voices Bloom are the most reflective yet from James Place. The hopeful kosmische beats and hauntological synth music on previous albums, and more delicate melodies, riding crisp minimal rhythms that flow elegantly from vignette to vignette. Rhythms of abstract techno with glistening melodic lights.

PLACE, JAMES Still Waves To A Whisper LP
James Place returns with his new LP Still Waves To A Whisper (the fourth release on Umor Rex). Flitting between the dreamworld of hauntological synth music and hypnotic techno functionality, Still Waves To Whisper showcases James Place's continuing development of dramatic (and varied) sound worlds. Musically, Still Waves To A Whisper contains both some of the most immediately danceable and straight up beautiful tracks of James Place's career. Utilizing voice samples from the same source as his last album, Voices Bloom, opener "Known Cry" is a heavenly coda of sunlight bursting through clouds, warm synths drifting across restrained pulses. "Timing and Lighting" went through countless live iterations before the current version was tracked for this album, a tunneling exploration of rhythm with a dose of sardonic humor. "Move In Blue (Homeward Mix)" is James Places's rework of a track from 2017's Voices Bloom, obsessively remixed and revisited, here littered with additional melodies and populated by newly sampled voices. Closing track "Names" is perhaps the most outright beautiful James Place recording to date. A stripped back rework of a live version of Living On Superstition's "Another Mourning In America" (2015), the tune is based on a melodic line written after the studio recorded version. Interwoven with a sampled vocal, and rinsed of all of the original song, "Names" is left behind a stark and compelling descendant. The title, Still Waves To A Whisper, stems from a conversation between Place and another artist on methods to ease anxieties and the benefits of a focused practice. The hope is for this music to continue that conversation on a larger scale. All songs written, produced and recorded by Phil Tortoroli between 2015-2018 in Brooklyn, NY. Vocals by Sam Sally and an unknown guest. Photos and design by Daniel Castrejón. Mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studio, NY.

SLOWS Enormous Pause Cassette
2018 release. Best known for playing guitar for Britain's legendary post-punk trailblazers Wire since 2010, Matthew Simms assumes his nom de plume Slows to craft slow and serene instrumentals. Recorded throughout winter in his small studio space in the Kent (UK) countryside, Enormous Pause comprises passages of electric organ and modular synth, variously droning and rumbling across two gorgeous, side-length pieces. In addition to Slows and Wire, Simms is also a core member of dream poppers It Hugs Back and improv supergroup UUUU, while increasingly in demand as a producer and session musician, recently working with Chastity Belt and Bill Fay. "This is the first time I've recorded music knowing it was going to released on cassette," says Simms. "I was reminded of how I first started recording music when I was 12 on a four-track; of the fantastic effect it has on capturing overdriven sounds." Improvisation is at the core of Slows' music, Simms attempting to come up with at least one entirely original piece for every live show he plays under the name. Much of the music on Enormous Pause originated while preparing to play opening slots for two of his favorite bands: Chicago's Tortoise and London's Tomaga. The result is two ethereal sides of gossamer keyboard melodies, buoyed by analog warmth as they slowly move through space echo chambers. This is easily some of Simms most impulsive and varied solo to date, flowing freely between cosmic synth ambience and the all manner of tape-distorted emotion without ever ceasing to engage deeply with the listener.

SONORA CASINO Trompeteros LP
"Hugo Macedo was a member of the first sonora in Peru, directed by his brother: the Sonora de Lucho Macedo. His brothers were the singers of the band while he performed as a timbalero. After nine years he founded the Sonora Casino of Hugo Macedo in 1964, later incorporating his wife, Lucía 'Pochita' Rivera as a vocalist. Trompeteros was released on the Peruvian record label MAG in 1972. Previously, the Sonora Casino had already recorded several albums for Philips since the mid-60s. At the time their repertoire was fed by rhythms such as cha cha cha, bolero, guaracha... Their MAG period would start in 1970 with the albumPochita y la Sonora Casino de Hugo Macedo in which Hugo Macedo's wife was granted with an important visual presence on the front cover, with a similar follow-up on Trompeteros, creating some confusion since vocalist Pachito Nalmy was the actual main singer on the record. The vocalist, who hails from Callao, demonstrates here a great vocal versatility as captured on songs like 'Guajira del amor', with a heavy rhythm that will surely delight boogaloo lovers, or the bolero number 'Pasa, pasa', being both songs own compositions of the multitalented Nalmy. Guarachas, descargas, and cumbias complete the offering of this fantastic album, one of the strongest tropical LPs in the MAG catalog. But the real banger here is the almost magical 'Astronauts to Mercury', a cosmic descarga full of electronic effects, filtered voices, and fierce guitars with wah-wah and raw distortion, closer to the sound of any psychedelic recording than the classic tropical sound of La Sonora Casino, and right next to those elements, an impressive brass section that boosts the intensity of the song to the highest levels. It is not surprising that Trompeteros has become in recent years a highly sought-after album not only by Latin music collectors but also by those after the most exotic and experimental psychedelic sounds around..." --Pablo Iglesias, aka DJ Bongohead

TAPAJOS/PEDRO DOS SANTOS, SEBASTIAO Vol. 2 LP
Vampisoul present a reissue of Sebastião Tapajos and Pedro Dos Santos's Vol. 2, originally released in 1972 only in Argentina. The ION studios, located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Balvanera, have been the usual setting for recordings by Argentine artists as popular as Les Luthiers or Charly García. In the early 1970s they also hosted Brazilian guitarist Sebastião Tapajos for several sessions accompanied by other musicians such as Arnaldo Henriques, Maria Nazareth, or Pedro "Sorongo" Dos Santos. Two albums would be published in the Argentine record label Trova of the recordings along with the latter. In this Vol. 2, the connection between the delicate guitar of Tapajos and the surprising experimental percussion of Pedro Dos Santos, based on unusual objects such as spoons, deodorant containers, or matchboxes, creates extraordinary beauty throughout the 12 songs on the album. The sound of the flute is another of the ingredients present in several of the songs and, although his actual involvement is not confirmed on the sleeve credits of the album, everything seems to indicate that Danilo Caymmi was the musician invited to accompany the Tapajos-Dos Santos duo. Since its first release in 1972, this album has been highly sought after by all Tapajos fans, both inside and outside Brazil, becoming a title hard to get hold of due to the fact that it was initially only published in Argentina. Years later, when Brazilian rhythms were incorporated, along with jazz, to the spectrum of sounds regularly played at London clubs, by DJs such as Gilles Peterson or Paul Murphy, a renewed interest in this album arose as it includes the killer dancefloor tune "Tornei A Caminhar", an amazing samba funk number. But the general vibe of this solid album is driven by an exquisite and delicate dialogue between the guitar of Sebastião Tapajos and the rhythmic approach provided by Pedro Dos Santos that generates ambiences of unusual beauty and depth. From the personal approach to Jobim's classic "Samba Do Aviao" to the energetic and fast paced "Ganga", the album opening song, the mysterious beauty of "Rio Das Ostras" to the cinematic moods of "Ambush" (bossa meets action film music?), this Vol. 2 is absolutely wonderful from beginning to end. It is a necessary complement to the much-hailed Pedro Dos Santos album Krishnanda (1968) in the collection of anyone with an interest in the most adventurous sounds of Brazil and also an essential work in the discography of Sebastião Tapajos.

LOS AFROINS Goza La Sala LP
"The aptly named Goza La Salsa (Enjoy Salsa) is the second album by Los Afroins, the flagship salsa band of the obscure but beloved INS label (Industria Nacional Del Sonido Ltda., Medellín, Colombia). The combo's repertoire focused mostly on cover versions hit tunes from New York, Cuba. and Puerto Rico, both classic and contemporary, but for this record, their sophomore outing from 1975, their arrangements got tighter and there are more original compositions, which makes for a satisfying evolution in both style and content. Pianist Agustín 'El Conde' Martínez, who would later work with Joe Arroyo and Juan Piña, led the group and did some arranging, with studio session production by INS artistic director Alfredo 'Sabor' Linares. The vocals were handled by a pair of fresh-faced singers, Lucho Puerto Rico and Roy 'Tayrona' Betancourt, who would later go on to fame in the 1980s, the former with his own Lucho Puerto Rico Y Su Conjunto Sonero and Conjunto Son Del Barrio (both in collaboration with Alfredo Linares), and the latter with Willie Salcedo, Reales Brass De Colombia, and Los Caribes. Additional arrangements were by Luis Felipe Basto of Los Black Stars and Luis E Mosquera, while the rest of the band was made up of INS related studio musicians. Goza La Salsa is just as hard to find as their first record and contains ten bright and sassy salsa dura treasures that light up the dance floor with their incessant rhythms, syncopated trumpets and trombone, and buoyant melodies. There are smoking covers of hits by Panama's Bush y sus Magníficos ('Salsa Al Pindin') and Bronx timbalero Orlando Marín and His Orchestra ('Está De Bala') as well as updated renditions of old Cuban chestnuts 'La Masacre' (written by Joseíto Fernández) and 'Matusa' (composed by Francisco Repilado aka Compay Segundo and made famous by Duo Los Compadres). This time around there are six excellent originals with the hottest pair being Lucho Puerto Rico's theme song 'Puerto Rico Power' and the percussion-heavy final track, 'Alejada' sung and composed by Roy Betancourt. Just like the first album, the entire record makes for a very tasty and satisfying party platter filled with guaguancó, mozambique, pachanga, descarga, and bolero that deserves to be more accessible and better known by today's fans of Colombian salsa..." --Pablo E Yglesias, DJ Bongohead of Peace & Rhythm Presented here in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

PERU NEGRO Son De Los Diablos LP
Vampisoul present the first vinyl reissue of Perú Negro's second album Son De Los Diablos, originally released in 1974. Peru has a rich folklore that reflects the cultural variety of its population as well as its history. Peruvian identity has been created from a mixture of traditions that includes those from the indigenous peoples of the Amazon and also those from the ancestral cultures of the Andes, the Spanish heritage and the rhythms and chants coming from its African communities. Afro-Peruvian music, also known as "música criolla", finds its roots in West African music, Spanish and European genres and native musical traditions from Peru. Flamenco-influenced sounds sit next to African tribal elements and a simple yet effective percussion instrument called cajón. Perú Negro, a dance company that also incorporated percussion combined with música criolla, celebrated and recreated black culture in Peru and they quickly became regulars at Lima's theaters in the late '60s. The lyrics and music would reflect the country's multicultural diversity, blending elements from the African tradition and echoes of Spanish-influenced melodies around stories of slavery days, rural labor and folklore. Their international success (in 1969 they won the main award at the Festival Hispanoamericano de la Danza y la Canción in Argentina) led them to record two albums in the early '70s conducted by Ronaldo Campos, Perú Negro's founder and artistic director. Son De Los Diablos is their second LP and was released in 1974 on Virrey Records, home to the likes of Sonora Lucho Macedo, Jaime Delgado Aparicio, or Los Belking's, and a follow-up to their self-titled debut album (VAMPI 194LP). Although lesser known than music from other nearby countries, Peru Negro's recordings are reminiscent of Afro-Colombian or Afro-Cuban rhythms. If you have an interest in Cuban son or Colombian bambuco, this record will be an essential addition to your collection and the perfect introduction to the fascinating música criolla. Reissued on vinyl for the first time and presented in facsimile artwork.
