BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE The Brian Jonestown Massacre LP
2020 repress; LP version. 180 gram, clear vinyl; superb deluxe packaging. The Brian Jonestown Massacre burst into 2019 with the release of their 18th full-length album, just seven months after their last one, Something Else (AUK 043CD/LP). The self-titled, nine-track album is released on Anton Newcombe's A Recordings, and it was recorded and produced at Anton's Cobra Studio in Berlin. The album was originally going to be released in September of 2018, but due to a hugely successful global tour -- taking in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe -- the release was delayed. Recorded in early 2018, the album features Sara Neidorf on drums, Heike Marie Radeker (LeVent) on bass, Hakon Adalsteinsson (BJM, Third Sound, Gunman, Holy Ghost) on guitar, and Anton Newcombe on multiple instruments. Also making a guest vocal appearance on "Tombes Oubliées" is Rike Bienert who has sung on previous BJM albums. The band performed songs from the album throughout the European leg of the 2018 tour. Anton Newcombe has been a very busy man over the past few years, having released four critically-acclaimed Brian Jonestown Massacre albums and an EP, one soundtrack album, and two albums with Tess Parks. All releases were fully recorded and produced at Anton's studio. The Brian Jonestown Massacre track "Bon Bon" was used in the 2015 Palm D'Or winner Dheepan. Anton penned the soundtrack for Moon Dogs, a film directed by multi-BAFTA nominated Philip John (Svengali, Downton Abbey, Being Human).

CONTAINER Scramblers LP
LP version. Transparent blue vinyl with insert. Container is the project of American noise veteran Ren Schofield, originally from Providence, Rhode Island, and now based in London. Editions Mego offshoot Spectrum Spools -- run by old friend John Elliott of the band Emeralds -- took the punt to release his debut LP, a collection of mutated techno tracks simply titled LP (SP 007LP). The record gained attention quickly in the electronic music scene largely thanks to Schofield's unique production style that separates him from forms of conventional dance music. Whilst the music of Container sits perfectly fine within dance music, years on the US noise circuit have given Schofield's brand of techno a rawness and direct intensity that stands out in the club and crosses over into other sub-sections of the underground. His modest set up of Roland MC-909, a four-track porta studio and an array of pedals allowed him to hone his scuzzy and bewildering beat music over the years, leading to three more well-received, and literally titled, LP's. Over this time period Container also released some EPs on Morphine, Liberation Technologies, and Diagonal, did a variety of remixes for acts like Four Tet, The Body, Panda Bear, and Fucked Up, plus maintained a healthy touring schedule that reached over every continent. Almost a decade since his debut, Container arrives on Alter with his first non-LP titled album called Scramblers. The title taken from both a Baltimore street drug and a Rhode Island Diner he used to eat at with his father. Schofield elaborates: "The juxtaposition between these two Scramblers is a great one. I wanted to pay homage to a nice name that lends itself to both depraved and wholesome contexts and do my part to carry on the tradition." The eight tracks have their origins in live performance and a more high-octane delivery is noticeable when compared with previous Container albums. "Mottle" sits in a mysterious zone between the productions of EVOL and early Ruff Sqwad. Fierce electro cuts like "Trench" and "Nozzle" work alongside the nauseous slink of "Duster", which in typical Container fashion morphs into a frenzy in no time. A frenzy which may be linked cosmically to the fact that Scramblers was recorded, mixed, and mastered in one day, reinforcing further his unorthodox and fun approach to club music.

LES RALLIZES DENUDES + BE There's No Heaven Like Hell 2LP
Repressed. One of the strangest and most enigmatic groups in the history of rock n' roll, Les Rallizes Denudes, also known as Hadaka no Rallizes or Hadaka no Rarizu, were a Japanese experimental rock band that is often cited as a pioneering force of the noise rock movement. The story of the band is as strange and difficult as the music they made and although much of the tale is shrouded in mystery, everything apparently begins around Kyoto's radical anti-establishment communes of the late 1960s, where androgynous frontman Takashi Mizutani formed the group in November 1967 while attending Kyoto University. Hard facts are in thin supply and the band's name employs complex punning that essentially equates to "Fucked Up and Naked" in Japanese, a slang reference to being high on drugs. Inspired by the Velvet Underground and other groups employing prominent, overamplified guitar, the band's music was typically based on repetitive rhythmic patterns bolstered by Mizutani's heavily distorted lead guitar, though the poor sound quality of early demos apparently turned Mizutani away from studio recordings, rendering much of their output in the form of live bootlegs, supplanted by the occasional leaked studio demo. Early performances were given as accompaniment to avant-garde theater groups, though the group was soon deemed too loud to be a mere accompaniment, and membership fluctuated frequently, with Mizutani being the only constant, though he retreated from public view following the 1970 Red Army hijacking of Japan Airlines flight 351, with the assistance of original Rallizes bass player, Moriaki Wakabayashi, who subsequently fled to North Korea; the band continued to sporadically record and perform under various guises until 1997. The two versions of There's No Heaven Like Hell, presented here, was recorded on April 1, 1975 at Rallizes House in Fussa, a small town to the west of Tokyo, joining Mizutani with keyboardist/guitarist Taisuke Morishita's experimental group Be, originally known as Yellow. The first version takes the form of an epic slow drone, featuring Mizutani on acid guitar, backed only by Morishita's pulsating synthesizer lines; the second version is in full marathon mode, an hour-long dirge that sees the spacey duo joined by drummer Shunichiro Shoda and a plodding bassist in the latter portion.

PARKER, WILLIAM I Plan To Stay A Believer: The Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield 2LP
"I Plan To Stay A Believer is the definitive document of William Parker's The Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield project, featuring fully charged extensions & expansions -- both music & text -- of selections from the soul music legend's immortal songbook by an equally mighty & masterful 8-piece band featuring Parker himself in supreme rhythm section communion with drummer Hamid Drake and pianist Dave Burrell. Vocals by the exquisitely gifted Leena Conquest & additional voice/poetry/powerful singing as well by legendary scribe/force Amiri Baraka in one of his greatest/last appearances on record. The horn section takes it to next level, too. Parker brought this ensemble to festival stages in Europe (and Chicago & New York) during the first decade of this new millennium; many of these sets were recorded and this presents the distilled concentrate thereof anew. Gospel-tinged uplift, luminous swing, tight soul grooves, and wholly lit free jazz are rousingly delivered with clear-eyed joy and righteous purpose. This work brings Mayfield's and Parker's positive messages of hope and fortitude in the face of seemingly endless tribulation firmly into the present moment, exultantly so and with total commitment. This first time on vinyl limited edition features all new cover art & insert with Parker's liner notes + a previously unreleased, exclusive to vinyl version of 'People Get Ready/The Inside Song' + a download card for full-resolution download of 7 additional tracks/80 minutes of this profound music. 'It's hard to imagine Curtis Mayfield being anything but flattered by the immense thought and planning that clearly went into these arrangements. To pull and stretch these songs so much and still preserve their essential identity is a true feat of art.' --Pitchfork" Housed in a gatefold sleeve; includes full-res download with 7 additional tracks.

PANORAMA CHANNEL & PLETNEV Blavatsky EP 12"
This is the first time Lithuanian Pletnev and Russians Panorama Channel have ever officially collaborated. Three originals, two remixes, one consistent immersive vibe that envelops from the start and builds in intensity. "Blavatsky" is all mid tempos and woozy psychedelics. It's flipped by a sublime remix from You're Me's Yu Su, who whips up an ageless nod to the legacy of Two Lone Swordsmen; "Eiffel Tower Syndrome" follows. Intense, edgy, and prone to paranoid flurries over a heavy driving beat before Simple Symmetry's remix closes things out.

BLANK FORMS Blank Forms, Vol. 5: Aspirations of Madness Book
Aspirations of Madness, Blank Forms' fifth collection of archival, unpublished, or newly translated texts, takes its title from a series of interviews with Japanese free jazz pioneer Masayuki Takayangi that were published in Japanese in 1975-76 and are published here in English for the first time. The interviews provide a rare look at Takayanagi's eccentric practice and personality, both long under-recognized by audiences outside (and often, inside) of Japan. The postwar Japanese history that Takayanagi describes also surfaces in this publication's opening piece, a poetic tribute by the writer and artist Louise Landes Levi to one of Takayanagi's contemporaries, the poet Kazuko Shiraishi. Aspirations of Madness includes a second Levi poem as well, "A Deep River", written while at La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela's Dream House in 2003, while Charles Curtis was rehearsing "Just Charles and Cello in the Romantic Chord", a composition by Young that Blank Forms plans to present in Spring 2020. Complementing this tradition of Japanese free improvisation and poetry is the republication of a 1977 interview with Joseph Jarman, the great composer, poet, and multi-instrumentalist. The interview took place a few months after the publication of Jarman's book Black Case Volume I & II: Return from Exile, a collection of writings from 1960 to 1977 (Blank Forms, Fall 2019). The volume also feature Charles Stein's introduction to Being = Space x Action. In its specificity and rarity of focus, Stein's text offers valuable information on a vibrant artistic network of the recent past, as well as an extended look at the evolution of Catherine Christer Hennix's complex practice. Further along, Aspirations of Madness features an excerpt from The Tree of Music, a cross-cultural treatise by the Russian musicologist Genrich "Henry" Orlov, the English translation of which has never been published before. The Tree of Music is a sweeping philosophical study of global music and cultures with universalist and spiritualist ambitions, excerpts of which are here selected and introduced by the composer and pianist Leo Svirsky. Aspirations of Madness closes with one of Maryanne Amacher's final pieces of writing, The Agreement, from 2009. The text takes the form of a letter between Amacher and the Open Ended Group, with whom she had planned to collaborate on her final, unfinished project, Lagrange: A Four Part Mini Series. Aspirations of Madness features additional contributions by Alan Cummings, Bill Dietz, Peter Kastakis, Art Lange, Leo Svirsky, Satoru Obara, and Tomoyuki Chida, and is edited by Lawrence Kumpf with Joe Bucciero. 242 pages; 6x8 inches.

FEMME Ruderal Exotique LP
After their critically acclaimed Chroma LP (BRD 024LP, 2017), Femme -- the group of Arno Bruil (France Sauvage, Descendeur) and Jo Tanz (Opéra Mort, Fusiller) -- release Ruderal Exotique augmenting their psychedelic electronics explorations in reconceived territories, this time an artificial growth of urban decay on irradiated nature as experienced within Ken Russel's intoxicated and prodigious mind directing Altered States (1981). Best experienced in an isolation tank, an airport capsule hotel or on a silent electric car chase buzzing through Tim Buckley's snapshot of smoggy-out L.A., Ruderal Exotique is a flourish of slow burning synapses, the tiny magnetic connections that desperately cling and look for each other when your mind expects the hammer to finally conclude the ordeal while your body languishes on a stone in the bright sun of Midsommar. Ruderal Exotique is lounge music for Bob, or Bruce, or Fred, growing Mors Ontologica on the farm, in Dick's A Scanner Darkly (1977), a new-path laid out by Throbbing Gristle's Chris Carter now twisted and tangled even further, branching out from the future of technology back into the present of Zelazny's 24 Views of Mt. Fuji, by Hokusai (1985). Growing new species as a result of destroying older species, life emerges from the industrial rubble that looks like scar tissue and smells like steel laced with lichen. To the biotech DIY apprentices of Femme, immersing in this cesspool of environmental data is a joy and their music glows in the dark of globalized waste as a symphony of gleaming flora and strident fauna. It is as reassuring as Virginia Astley's gardens, as vibrant as Steve Reich's big city collages and as evocative as the Gerogerigegege's Uguisudani Apocalypse (2019). It is a world of its own, yet it is also our world as it is today, AI machines advancing thru genetically modified corn fields, shredding up cicadas and worms, planting steel shards in their place that will rust and give way to the new machine, documented by Stephen Mallinder and Richard H. Kirk. Long live the new flesh of the Femme realist resistance!

WIND ATLAS Arche-Fossil LP
Arche-Fossil is Wind Atlas's fourth record, which sees the band pushing the boundaries of their own music as genres such as post-industrial electronics, ambient, noise, and popular Mediterranean music merge, bringing to life a hybrid and intense album. The gestation process of Arche-Fossil began even before the publication of An Edible Body (2018). With that record, the band changed members and ventured into more electronic territories by using drum machines and synths that still fit their ritual post-punk sound. After two years spent working on this new record, these electronic landscapes have taken over their music. Arche-Fossil was almost entirely recorded by themselves at their home studio and finished at Maik Mayer's recording studio with Sergio Pérez. It collects the songs that represent the band's work over the last two years and that best reflect the issues that weave the whole record regarding the relationship between human beings and reality. "Hunger" opens the record amidst a thunder of abstract sounds and a viscous bass loop. By using samples from M.E.S.H.'s "Optimate", which forms the noisy basis of the song, "Hunger" approaches more experimental electronic terrains. "Where Nothing Happens" explores empty spaces and everything that happens within them when something -- a step, a voice, an object -- interrupts their eternal being, thus generating new meanings between these spaces and that which suddenly inhabits them. In "Dos Ojos", the band continues navigating electronic landscapes, this time through Spanish traditional and oral literature. "Days of Sadness", a free adaptation of Galician poet José Ángel Valente's poem "Latitud", pays homage to the language of the unsaid. "That Mouth" emerges as a dramatic effect when the record has managed to hypnotize. Trance and an industrial sound meet amidst MS20 roars and a beat going over 140bpm. Metallic blows and the sound of chains burst in, creating rhythmic patterns over a bass drum that pushes forward. The eeriest and most beautiful moments appear on the record's B-side. Such moments come to life in tracks like "Oceanic Sexuality" or the closer "Do You Have a House?", along with the experimental "Nothing", in which, by only utilizing noise, Wind Atlas create a sonic collage poem that draws from power-electronics. In Arche-Fossil, Wind Atlas continue exploring some of the paths they began mapping with their previous record. This time, however, they manage to approach the heterogeneous in a much more certain and lucid manner, without ever stopping wondering about their own voice.

MAD MAN JAGA Wakabout LP
Dig This Way Records presents a restored and remastered edition of Mad Man Jaga's Wakabout, originally released in 1978 on Sir Victor Uwaifo's label JOROMI in Nigeria. Musically, the LP is a unique collection of slightly off-killer percussive afrobeat funk; the arrangements are brass friendly, slick on the keys, and framed with rich, resonant, and deep soul vocals. To complement the funk, the record also features a fine example of African reggae roots, "Tell Me Why You Cry."

MUSICAL BREED Save The Little Children LP
Musical Breed's Save The Little Children is deep Nigerian late '80's digi-roots reggae, reissued here by Dig This Way Records. Loaded with dope digital roots rhythms, and filled with mad synths, deep conscious lyrics, and a deep bassline, it's quite unique. The two main tracks come with raw dubs which aren't common on many other African reggae albums, and the last track, "If I'm To Rule The World" is an interesting blend of reggae and boogie. The LP never really saw a commercial issue and was probably pressed only in promotional copies for radio and DJs, making the original nearly impossible to be found nowadays. Fully restored cover art, remastered audio. Includes insert with lyrics, images, a newspaper article from 1990, and an extensive interview by Sharon Escco Wilson.

DIBSON & ESSODY Justice LP
Looking at Dibson & Essody's Justice, one might be surprised to know that a monster boogie track, or even a handful of them, are hidden right beneath those seven bold letters. Dig This Way Records and Sleeve Records have combined forces to make the impossible possible with a reissue of Dibson & Essody's Justice. Originally recorded in 1982 and released by distinguished Nigerian label Wilfilms, this rare, revelation of music was meant for sharing and the two labels will be doing just that. Reworked and remastered, this seven-track dance floor masterpiece follows the 1960 Nigerian liberation from Western colonization, when Nigeria began to use music to move everyone into a place of harmony and community. Like the majority of music emerging from within the Nigerian state at the time, this pairs disco and funk-infused beats with strong, political lyrical statements. Here, the political undertones of "Justice" blend with the smoldering grooves of "Music Lovers" and "Let Your Body Move," classifying this disco as one of the monumental must-haves of Nigeria from the early 1980s.

VA Best of Jicco Funk Volume 1 LP
Dig This Way Records presents, Best of Jicco Funk Volume 1 , a door to a world of music that is high grade in quality, diverse, and open to interpretation even if the selected tracks are all from the same record label. One's questions might include: When did they start? Why did they start? Who was behind it? Where did the artists come from? What was their inspiration? By the time one reaches the end of the eight tracks included here, there may be more. In the early 1970s through to the '90s, Onitcha was one of Nigeria' most important cities, sitting on the banks of the river Niger about halfway between Benin City and Enugu. Aside from commerce, Onitcha was also an important center for music production; live music thrived and the city had a nightlife which embraced music. It's where labels like Tabansi and many other smaller companies had their headquarters. It's where in the late '60s, the label Jicco was also established, an enterprise which would commercialize Kenyan and Congolese music in Nigeria. By the mid-late '70s Jicco opened itself to new projects, launching a number of sub-labels, from Vox Africa to Guy, more specialized in highlife, native and soukous music, as well as jicco funk which was produced by small, local groups playing reggae, rock, and funk. Features: Jah Children, The Combats, Black Gold, Freedom Family, The Combats, The Sea-Men International, Felix Lebarty, and Jimmy Sky.

CALHAU! Tau Tau LP
Multidisciplinary Portuguese artists Calhau! return in 2020 with a new album and their first release on Discrepant. It's quite possible you've never heard about them. They're not that famous in Portugal or anywhere. Calhau! is formed by couple Alves von Calhau and Marta von Calhau, not their real names, but they're their real names in the artistic reality Calhau! have been working in the last 15 years. But now that you've read their name, you must dig in. They're one of a kind. They're not musicians, painters, illustrators, sculptures, visual artists, or performers. They're all the above but without manifesting their work specifically in any of them. While listening to Tau Tau --or any of their other releases -- that translates quite well: their sound is quite visual, the voices translate into movement and the arbitrary use of sounds reveal a strong sensibility to the architecture of aesthetic. Tau Tau manifests the voice element in Calhau!'s music as their main element. It's been present in previous releases, but it's the centerpiece here. All the words/phrases you hear are wordplays, with Portuguese words and their sounds, but also associations and co-relations. It's done with purpose and meaning, it's tailored work that carries meaning and -- like in "Bófiacult" -- a social critique. The sounds and how Marta plays with her voice expose some other areas of work in Calhau!'s domain, like their continued interest in Portuguese folk traditions, not just with music/sound but also with objects. Objects that, ultimately, you can listen in Tau Tau. If you're a fan of both Discrepant's Antologia De Música Atípica Portuguesa compilations (they've contributed with one track for the first volume "O Trabalho"), you'll find Tau Tau as a good complement of how 21st century musicians understand and recreate Portuguese folklore. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker. Composed and performed by Von Calhau. Bag Pipes by Vasco Alves.

VOORN, ORLANDO Orlando Voorn presents Dirty Rules 12"
Orlando Voorn's musical output goes from strength to strength with each new release showing the Dutch musician flex his producer muscles in new and stronger forms. His trademark sound, a brilliant mixture of Detroit influence and Dutch modernism, is thoughtfully crafted with the dancefloor centrally placed in his musical mind. Mr. Voorn's latest venture arrives in the form of the "Dirty Rules Crew", a collaborative effort for Elypsia Records which is absolutely impossible to resist, and guaranteed to smash the club to pieces. Kicking off the release comes the Christian Bonori remix of "Dirty Rules". The Italian producer/DJ wastes no time getting things going with a tough-as-nails kick drum and sharp, moody synth stabs. The energy grows stronger with each passing phrase, with additional percussion, vocal samples, and textures placed strategically, pushing the tune towards it's boiling point. Orlando Voorn's version of "Dirty Rules" is a captivating cut centered around a relentless and powerful percussive groove which confidently captures Orlando's ability to combine true late-night mayhem with well calibrated patience. The vocal samples flow in and out of consciousness whilst loopy synth melodies construct a hypnotic atmosphere brilliantly. Diving into more submerged territory is the final version of "Dirty Rules", credited as the "Deeptech Mix" for clear reasons. Saturated textures, repetitive vocal samples, and a heavy use of reverb all result in a perfectly murky heads-down dancefloor experience. True afterhours power for those who can handle going below the surface into deeper musical territories.

LEAF PEEPERS Lunchtime for Birdy LP
"First graspable release by Leaf Peepers, a Massachusetts duo comprised of Turner Falls' Omeed Goodzari and Worcester's Nick Bisceglia. Omeed is well-known hereabouts as member of Donkey No No, and also for his solo recordings, which include the superb Zoltar Hid All the Locks / Minnows LP (FTR 349LP, 2018). Nick has recorded with his band Husks, and has also participated on sessions by Wendy Eisenberg and Chris Weisman among others. In fact, the both of them helped out on Chris's last album, Romantics. Be that as it may, the sound of the Leaf Peppers is located somewhere near the orthocenter of these references. Because Omeed is present, there is a distinct whiff of classic hippie paranoia, usually expressed via acoustic guitar figures that are both simple and complex at the same time. Meanwhile, the vocals display lots of the same weird pop displacement as the tuneage of Brattleboro's finest. Although it also seems as if there's a lot of speed manipulation on the vocal tracks, so that sometimes you'd swear you were listening to ghost-lassies singing about CIA operatives and monkey glands and various other topics. But whatever speed you hear it at, Lunchtime for Birdy is a trip. Rolling circles of guitar-chords, toots of the pan flute, with vocals and lyrics that range from softly lyrical to something that recalls the ecstatic-chaos of the Fugs. Prepare thyself to deal with lunch. As a miracle." --Byron Coley, 2020

BROWN REVUE, THE JAMES Live At The Apollo 1972 2LP
2020 repress, originally an RSD 2016 release. "For the ten years leading up to 1972, the James Brown Revue was an outright superfunk freight train, speeding around the world and crushing all competition. This dominance stretched beyond the charts, too -- the group was even more dynamic and exciting on stage, a fact that kept them sleepless and on the move, as audiences demanded more. From 1963 to 1971, James Brown had released not one but three albums recorded live at Harlem's famed Apollo Theater. The first volume of the series is still rightfully revered today as one of the greatest live albums of all time. But Volumes II (1968) and III (1971 -- aka Revolution Of The Mind) were no slackers either, showing James and his incredible band (with talent including 'Pee Wee' Ellis, Fred Wesley, John 'Jabo' Starks, Clyde Stubblefield, Maceo Parker, Lyn Collins, Bobby Byrd and many more) at the peak of their respective powers each time, playing a litany of JB hits. Because of this, it will always be a mystery as to why Volume IV, which was recorded at the Apollo on September 14, 1972, was shelved. This is in no small part because the performers and songs heard here are some of the Godfather of Soul's (and the JBs') strongest. But shelved it was, full of fire but languishing for decades in the Polydor vaults. Thankfully we can now put that all behind us, with the first-time-ever-on-vinyl release of this incredible concert, from more than four decades ago. One look at the tracklist will make you salivate: from instrumental JBs classics like 'Pass the Peas,' 'Gimme Some More' and 'Hot Pants Road' to James' own 1972 smash vocal 'There It Is,' the assembled group of musical geniuses -- including trombonist and bandleader Fred Wesley; saxophonist St. Clair Pinckney; guitarists Hearlon 'Cheese' Martin and Jimmy 'Chank' Nolan; bassist Fred Thomas; and Brown himself on organ -- smash through James' New New Super Heavy Funk with ridiculous power, control and panache. Included here, beyond the music, are in-between song introductions and banter, which bring you right into the front row. This live album stands apart because it was conceptualized to showcase James Brown's favorite players -- The JBs -- and vocalists, Bobby Byrd and Lyn Collins, who had their own R & B smashes on the People label. And these supreme talents get plenty of space to shine here: Collins' 'Do Your Thing' and 'Think (About It)' and Byrd's 'Keep On Doin' (What You're Doin'),' alongside 'I Know You Got Soul' simply levitate the bandstand. This future classic is a clear reminder that James Brown was as much of a talent scout as he was a more-than-legendary performer. And while other Live At The Apollo releases focused on his own incredible music, here he gives the stage to the musicians that brought his work to life and kept his legend going for decades. Future generations won't have to wonder why this music was held back for so long, because they will always have this album -- and once you hear the first notes, you won't worry any more either. You will sit back, let some of the greatest musicians of all time blow your mind, and smile for several days straight. So put the needle on the record and let it begin."

HADIDJAH & JUGALA JAIPONGAN, IDJAH Jaipongan Music of West Java + Reworks 2LP
Indonesian music has enraptured ears across the globe for many years, and few styles hold such a colorful history and place in the hearts of the people of West Java as Jaipongan. Hive Mind Records announce a collaboration with Kai Riedl of Javasounds to bring you these superb recordings of one of Java, Indonesia's most famed music styles of the '70s and '80s, Jaipongan. The album, recorded at the famed Jugala Studios in Bandung, Java in 2007, features the incredible vocals of Idjah Hadidjah, the country's most iconic singer of the genre, backed by members of the Jugala Studios house band. The album comes with a second disc of reworks of the original tracks by boundary pushing electronic musicians from around the world. Known for its rapid gamelan (gongs and metallophones) playing, angular and dynamic drumming, and erotically charged dancing, Jaipongan was invented by composer and choreographer Gugum Gumbira (1945-2020) in reaction to the Indonesian government's ban on rock and roll. As a form of rebellion, Gumbira took the core elements of a local, erotically charged harvesting ritual music and contemporized the sound by adding the gamelan instruments, dynamic drumming, the speed and urbanized subject matter of rock 'n' roll, and sensual dance moves. Idjah Hadidjah, a professional singer with Sundanese Shadow Puppet Theatres was approached by Gugum Gumbira in the early '80s and asked to sing with his Jugala Orchestra. Their collaboration was to last through the decade as she quickly became one of the country's most beloved Jaipongan singers. The Javasounds recordings saw her reunited with both Bandung's famous Jugala studio, and members of its famed house orchestra for the first time in a number of years. The Remix Project: For the past few years Kai Riedl was executive producer and curator of Moogfest, the annual celebration of experimental electronic music and of the work of Bob Moog. As a musician himself, Riedl wanted to connect the musicians in Java with others around the world, and he was keen to make multitrack recordings in Java so that other musicians could have access to high quality recordings of individual instruments to work with. For + Reworks, he gave a number of artists from around the world access to the original multitrack recordings with the understanding they had free reign to work with them in an intuitive and open-ended way. Features Bana Haffar, Bergsonist, Lightbath, Sarah Belle Reid, Signals Under Tests, Fahmi Mursyid, Kai Riedl & Suny Lyons, and Ultrabillions.

HOLY FUCK Deleter LP
Repressed; LP version. Holy Fuck have announced new album Deleter, previewed with the video for acclaimed latest single "Luxe" featuring Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor. Arriving at a moment where attention spans are shot and anxieties are going into overdrive, Deleter, Canadian band Holy Fuck's fifth studio album, is a defiantly full-bodied affair. Polyrhythmic and pleasure-focused, Deleter sees Brian Borcherdt, Graham Walsh, Matt Schulz, and Matt "Punchy" McQuaid utilizes their signature sound -- seamlessly fusing the gauzy drive of krautrock and deep house's dreamy ineffability, expertly blending purring motorik percussion with the sort of fuggy synthetic fizz and tang they are renowned for. From the thrusting minimalism of opener "Luxe" through to the triumphant chug of closing track "Ruby", via club-ready rollocker "Free Gloss" and the cosmic clatter of "San Sebastian", Deleter is a record that joins the Holy Fuck dots within their widescreen, technicolor, crescendo-heavy sound. Also features Angus Andrew and Nicholas Allbrook.

DEPARTURE CHANDELIER Antichrist Rise To Power CD
Departure Chandelier's music shimmers with the aesthetic ardor of apotheosis. It is a communion with the deceased, tracing the pathway of life transmuted into death over dishonor. Although comprised of members of Akitsa and Ash Pool, Departure Chandelier is wholly unique in style and substance and bears little overt resemblance to either of those projects. Recorded nearly a decade ago, Departure Chandelier's debut album, Antichrist Rise To Power, actually preceded the band's demo, The Black Crest of Death, The Gold Wreath of War (2011). Recorded in a basement at grave-level behind the New York City Marble Cemetery (the oldest cemetery in New York City), established as a repository for the dead in 1831, just a decade after Napoleon's death. Within the gates of the small graveyard (where photography for the album was taken during a rare snowstorm) each plot is commemorated with a marble tomb. Compositionally, one hears the heavy influence of Bathory and other seminal acts overwritten by the sound of classic French black metal. Keyboard stabs and swells outline the riffs, accentuating the guitar's stately thrust. Rising out of the music, the vocals seethe, the commingled expression of scorn for life and spiritual dissent. The recording manages to capture the best elements of raw black metal, leaving the guitars brittle and charged, while simultaneously supplying depth and balance. The juxtaposition between the lean, stripped-down essence of the recording with the ornate and complex melodies and florid compositional accents is a perfect complement to the album's boldly unique detail of the Napoleonic era. Co-release with the Nuclear War Now! label.

RUUTU POISS Pull/Push 12"
Ruutu Poiss returns to International Major Label with two evolutionary, spacetime bending dance floor hitters. The Estonian sound artist revisits the psychedelic approach used for his first 7" release on the label (Halli/Uttu, 2016), expanding his refined palette with the use of modular synthesizers. Pull/Push holds extraterrestrial, contemporary techno music. Off-kilter, but very effective. These two powerful gems could easily be described as "heavy" or "weighty", but that seems very unfitting here. Where "Pull" immediately entraps us in a soaring vortex, "Push" takes a long intro to launch us hard into a compelling stratosphere.

MAXWELL, SHAWN Millstream CD
Back to jazz -- a spirited free-thinker and committed nonconformist, saxophonist-composer Shawn Maxwell is clearly courting another kind of muse. "Jackie McLean and Cannonball Adderley are two of my heroes, and I guess you probably wouldn't even think of it listening to me play. But I've transcribed them and been influenced hugely by them. I love Cannonball. But I'm not gonna be Cannonball." By relying heavily on the sound of Fender Rhodes electric piano and his own penchant for mixing memorable melodies with angularity and odd meters, Maxwell has come up with something different indeed on Millstream, his ninth album as a leader. With that signature '70s sound of Rhodes underscoring the proceedings, Maxwell and his Chicago cohorts (keyboardist Collin Clauson, bassist Jeremiah Hunt, and drummer Phil Beale) deal in long forms that avoid tired head-solo-solo-head conventions. "I'll often write a line without following the rules of ii-v-i and the logic of 'this leads to that. When I'm composing I'll think, 'How can I make this work when maybe it shouldn't work that way?' I want it to stand out enough but not so it just sounds like someone's throwing a pile of forks at a wall or something like that." Personnel: Shawn Maxwell - alto & soprano saxophones; Collin Clauson - Rhodes, piano, Wurlitzer; Jeremiah Hunt - bass; Phil Beale - drums; Chad McCullough - flugelhorn, trumpet. Liner notes by Bill Milkowski, a regular contributor to Downbeat, Absolute Sound, and Jazziz. He is also the author of JACO: The Extraordinary and Tragic Life of Jaco Pastorius.

ALDINUCCI, GIULIO Shards Of Distant Times LP
LP version. Italian sound artist Giulio Aldinucci returns with his third album on Karl, Shards Of Distant Times, a masterfully composed and sound-designed ambient masterpiece. It's a more-than-worthy follow-up to the critically acclaimed Borders And Ruins (2017) and Disappearing In A Mirror (KR 055CD/LP, 2019) which both made it onto several year's best lists. Over the course of six solo albums on labels like Dronarivm plus EPs and collaborative albums with musicians such as Ian Hawgood (Consequence Shadows (HOMEN 094CD, 2018)) Aldinucci successively has been refining his skills as composer and sound designer. His elegant style blending ambient and field recordings came to full impact on his previous Karl albums Borders And Ruins and Disappearing In A Mirror which gained the Italian sound artist a lot of critical praise and made it onto several year's best lists, such as that of Acloserlisten.com. Aldinucci's latest effort is again not only a musical masterpiece of sublime beauty and sacral majesty, it also deals with philosophical concerns. Where Borders was a reflection on the instability of borders and Disappearing In A Mirror raised the very personal question of identity, Shards Of Distant Times explores the liminal areas of the contemporary soundscape that are characterized by the presence of human voice coming from old and time-worn recordings. Like in the auditory pareidolia, the psychological phenomenon in which the mind hears indistinct voices in random noise where none exist, voices and music emerge from the everyday soundscape through the omnipresent internet connected devices, creating glitches between time and space.

DIE ANGEL Utopien I LP
die ANGEL, the duo project of Ilpo Väisänen (ex-Pan Sonic) and Dirk Dresselhaus, aka Schneider TM, starts its third decade of sonic explorations with the release of album #10 which bears the programmatic title, Utopien I. die ANGEL (or just ANGEL in the early days) was born in 1999 during a joint European tour of Pan Sonic and Schneider TM with the aim to use electronics, string instruments, and effect loops to develop a sonic world that goes beyond fixed structures and clearly defined genres. Coming from different musical backgrounds proved quite an advantage for the duo as it meant that Ilpo Väisänen (ex-Pan Sonic) and Dirk Dresselhaus (Schneider TM) had to find their particular modus operandi: communication through noise and action, instant composition, spirit. Over the course of over two decades now, die ANGEL crafted a catalog of nine albums released on labels like Editions Mego or Edition Telemark that were recordings of either the core duo or featured like-minded artists like cellist Hildur Gudnasdottir, Oren Ambarchi, Lucio Capece, or BJ Nilsen. die ANGEL delve deep into the microcosms of tones, shaping nuanced layers of abstract sound that integrate elements of musique concrète, minimal music, industrial, noise, blues, and psychedelia, and yet bear the unmistakable die ANGEL signature. Utopien I is not only the duo's latest effort (featuring Oren Ambarchi) but also a clear political call: in a world of a general decline, we need new ideas and approaches to design the future. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code.

LOFFLER, CHRISTIAN Lys CD
Lys, Christian Löffler's newest album, serves as a contrast to Graal (2019), its predecessor. Whereas the latter is the result of a six-month period spent largely on the road in between live shows, the former is a studio release in the truest sense, recorded and compiled in the serenity of Löffler home studio, immersed in the woodland nature that formed the basis for A Forest (2012), his first attempt at the long-player format back in 2012. Lys is a selection of Löffler's favorite productions from the past three years, carefully compiled into one enchanting and deeply moving listening experience. The sounds of Lys can be traced back to late 2016, as Löffler settled back into his studio following Mare, but it really began to take shape in the wake of a creative breakthrough in 2018. Struggling with writer's block, Löffler travelled to Scandinavia. Graal, with its drawing-based artwork, reflected this rich period of initial creativity and opened the door to Lys, on which Löffler continues the narrative with 12 of his more contemplative and introspective studio adventures. Integral in the process was his painting of these earlier drawings, cementing a connection between his visual and musical work. What unifies these songs is the process behind them: Waking up early, Löffler headed for a run before sitting down in his studio for 8am. He'd set his mind back to the early morning, and reflect. Conceptually, the album captures how his feelings evolved during a day of working on the album, beginning in the morning and ending as his finished his painting in the evening. To capture his innermost feelings, he once again puts his voice front and center. It also features the vocals of Menke, a young Swedish singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist; and Mohna, who has been a staple on his recent tours. A natural calmness and beauty pervades the album, even on the two club-ready tracks, "Roth" and "Sun", sketches from Mare but reworked to fit Löffler's vision. "Versailles" and "Lys", two of the three lead singles, reflect the light and airy sound that Löffler envisioned at the beginning of the recording process. Meanwhile, "Noah", the third single, stands for the record's darker, heavier side, driven forward by Löffler own vocals. Along with "The End," a final focus track, these singles came together to form the backbone of the album. Also features Josephine Philip and finn..

VA Velvet Desert Music Vol. 2 2LP
Double LP version. With Velvet Desert Music Vol. 2, curator Jörg Burger has intensified his vision for this new series of compilations on Kompakt. The music he's collected here has a unique vibration, perhaps an audio equivalent to the legendary "acid Western" films of the 1960s and 1970s, when the wild frontier logic of the western met the consciousness-altering psychedelia of the counterculture. Velvet Desert Music is Burger exploring possibilities: what happens when you extract the essence from genres as diverse as spaghetti Western soundtracks, moody lamp-lit pop, downtempo, krautrock, minimalism, classic '60s psychedelia, and more, and let their scents intermingle, Des Esseintes-style? On Velvet Desert Music Vol. 2, Burger welcomes back old friends -- Fantastic Twins, Sascha Funke, Paulor, Rebolledo, Superpitcher, The Novotones -- and also introduces some exciting new names, such as Golden Bug and The Limiñanas, Mount Obsidian (aka César Urbina/Cubenx), and Lake Turner. Marcus Schmickler's Pluramon project appears, remixed by Burger, and Michael Mayer makes his first appearance with "Not So Far Away". The ultimate strength of Velvet Desert Music Vol. 2, though, is its seamlessness; you're encouraged to press play, sit back, and listen to the album unfurl as a whole. Much like one of Kompakt's other compilation series, the legendary yearly Pop Ambient collections edited by Wolfgang Voigt, Velvet Desert Music builds its own psychological environment to inhabit. And as you dig deeper into Velvet Desert Music Vol. 2, the music takes on synaesthetic turns, the textures all swirl together, igniting the senses. Each of the artists share with Burger himself a production style that echoes the cinèma pour l'oreille (cinema for the ear), with luscious sweeps of tone and melody opening out to reveal new vistas, new terrain for the attentive listener. When listening to Velvet Desert Music, think widescreen, think broad brushstrokes, think boldness but with sensual detail. It's the new frontier music. Also features The Velvet Circle, Charlotte Jestaedt, Daniel Maloso, Gen Pop, and Lake Turner/WEM/Hand.

MR. TOPHAT Time Lapse 12"
Life And Death's standout release schedule continues with a special new single from Swedish innovator Mr. Tophat that comes from his album Dusk to Dawn, while label boss DJ Tennis also steps up to add his own spin. Mr. Tophat always makes a big splash, whether crafting epic, disco-licked house adventures, putting out strictly limited vinyl on his own Junk Yard Connections or collaborating with pop sensation Robyn. Next to an EP with the Swedish star, he also co-wrote and produced two songs on her latest album Honey. His taste and style straddles various musical worlds and that means you can never predict his next move. A true original, this year alone he's put out a magnificent three-part album of house, ambient, and leftfield electronics and now aims for the dance floor on this latest massive. At over 12 minutes long "Time Lapse" is another Mr. Tophat masterclass in musical tension and narrative that is embellished with smart filter tweaks, dreamy vocals, and pixelated melodic rain. It is driven along by rubbery and propulsive kick that form an inviting bed from which you can gaze at the cosmic and sinewy chords that constantly shape-shift towards the heavens. This is a track that will have you lost in space and time and utterly enchanted by the majesty of it all. DJ Tennis then steps up with a remix and is himself having a busy year that sees him release the Redrago album with Red Axes (LAD 045LP). Here he ups the dancefloor clout with crisp percussion and more upright drums. Gorgeous arps will have people reaching for the skies and utterly lost in amongst the stars. These are two terrific journeys that make for moments of magical dance.

At the end of the year they won the Kerrang! award for Best British Band. In 2004, "Nothing" appeared on Beyblade's Let It Rip! official soundtrack. In 2007, "Something's Going On" and "The Distance" appeared on the Surf's Up video game soundtrack. Gatefold sleeve with updated liner notes; Includes two CDs containing the album and B-sides."Great pop-punk records are actually a fairly rare creature in the overall picture of alternative rock . . . That is why the blissfully sweet Hi-Fi Serious is such a wonderful surprise. Whereas in the past A always showed potential, on this record they took that step forward that so many of their contemporaries are afraid to take. And what a step forward it is; gorgeous hooks, excellent production, and anthemic choruses that border on hair metal at times all add up to an irresistible sound that should appeal to any fan of the genre. By cutting away the snotty Green Day worship that makes so many of these groups obnoxiously coy, the group can explore other genres without any concern over sounding too ironic or goofy. They have definitely moved in a more commercial direction on this record, adding elements like synthesizers and heavily processed backup vocals that might damage their credibility, but make their music just that much better . . . The fantastic 'Nothing' feels like it could burst apart at any moment, but instead it holds together with a chorus that burns its way into your brain and refuses to leave. 'Took It Away' feels like it's breaking apart toward the middle, then it makes a dramatic turn into a breezy Southern California section that brings the song to the next level. 'Starbucks' is almost too catchy to be likable, but they manage to turn the song into a cutesy-but-endearing pop nugget by the end. And 'The Distance' is either a pleasantly unique punk-pop anthem or the best hair metal song written since Poison's 'Ride the Wind' . . . DUMAMA + KECHOU Buffering Juju CD
Buffering Juju, the title of Dumama + Kechou's debut album, relates to the process of "excavating spiritually charged content from within." The duo's textural sound, driven by cyclical song structures and chant making, not only captures the angst of the modern world but mines this state of affairs for regenerative potential. Dumama (vocalist and uhadi player) + Kechou (multi-instrumentalist with a focus on indigenous African instruments and handmade instruments) met in Cape Town in 2017. There was an instinctive pulse to the initial clutch of shows they played together, blowing open vast sonic and conceptual possibilities. "I guess we were in similar places with our music processes in trying to push healing music to the edges and be more experimental with it," says Dumama. The narrative of the album unravels as a piece of magical realism informed by South African folklore and reality, detailing a woman's liberation story where the characters shift shape and traverse multiple realms, deploying various iterations of their power or lack thereof. "It has an organic, natural, cyber and modern kind of energy -- all rooted in African aesthetics of sound and storytelling," says Kechou. All of this sits on a bed of the duo's unique musical language, one that, although applied electronically in the form of looping and soundscaping, is founded on approaches to string, vocal and percussion tones that reflect a merger between Northern and Southern African heritage. Recorded primarily in Cape Town and Johannesburg over the first quarter of 2019, Buffering Juju is a conduit to a past we were not necessarily present for, and a future where threatened indigenous technologies thrive in an increasingly digitized world. FLAMMER, ERNST HELMUTH Orchestral Works Vol. 2 CD
This CD with orchestral works by Ernst Helmuth Flammer is the fifth edition with works by the composer at NEOS. The compositions presented here date from 1983-1999. They all deal with the phenomenon of time in different ways; whereby Flammer is concerned with the architectural/energetic organization of time within a composition, as well as the musical-historical point in time of their creation and thus a temporal classification in an aesthetic sense -- namely an "aesthetically rigorous approach" (Flammer). The piano concerto "Zeitzeichen - Zeitmaße" was recorded with Ortwin Stürmer and the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Lothar Zagrosek. Also features: Radio-Sinfonieorchester Basel - Ulrich Backofen, conductor; Philharmonisches Orchester Freiburg - Hannu Koivula, conductor - Ortwin Stürmer, piano; BBC Symphony Orchestra - Lothar Zagrosek, conductor.

The title cut opens with a bottomless 4/4 thump before deploying heavy depth charges with brittle industrial percussion, following by the militaristic stomping session of "Headshot" and tenacious swing of "Black Dog" featuring Luru. Flipside, Lokane takes a turn on "Headshot" infusing a dubbier edge, whereas Luru's take builds a stiff tension together with a battery of grating, industrial drums.

SCORN Cafe Mor 2LP
2020 repress. Double LP version. The first album from Scorn since 2010's Refuse; Start Fires, Cafe Mor is Mick Harris in his happy place. Which just happens to be in studio, demolishing all standards and rules for electronic bass music, and embodying the darkest, deepest sound in dub. Cafe Mor takes risks outside of the conventional Scorn apparatus, and with these risks come substantial rewards. The album is comprised of powerful dub excursions, from the deep dark dank of the front two tracks "Elephant" and "The Lower The Middle Our Bit", and gaining steam towards the ultraviolence of "Mugwump Tea Room" to "Never Let It Be Said" to the crushing death kick of "Who Are They Which One". A quick drive under the lights with a lasered out snare on "Dulce", then you come across the appearance from Sleaford Mods front man, Jason Williamson, on the standout track on the album, "Talk Whiff". A cruise around the Midlands sighting the Broke Fridge and Tinder Surprise, with an instant classic refrain: "Talk Whiff/ I'm a busy person/ I've had enough of it," Cafe Mor culminates in the all-in-one dub affair "SA70", letting rip all the new mixer and FX techniques of Harris's most recent incarnation of Scorn.

JAMAN Sweet Heritage LP
Available again for the first time since original release in 1974, Outernational Sounds presents one of the deepest custom press jazz recordings of all: Jaman's spiritualized and funky Sweet Heritage. The history of jazz is often told as though it was principally a history of releases and recordings. On those terms, it's easy to mistake a small recorded footprint for obscurity or silence. The true history of the jazz is the story of the music as it was played night after night in the clubs, bars, concert halls, and backrooms of cities and towns across America and the world. Only a tiny fraction of this living tradition ever makes it onto a recording. And even though 1974's Sweet Heritage is James Edward Manuel's only release, the pianist and educator better known as Jaman has undoubtedly lived it. Brought up in Buffalo, New York, Jaman studied classical piano before beginning formal jazz studies under greats including Earl Bostic and Horace Parlan. Quickly becoming a respected regular on the club scene in Buffalo, Jaman held down innumerable residencies and worked with top local musicians -- one of his early trios included the renowned bassist John Heard and drummer Clarence Becton, both of whom were poached one night by a visiting Jon Hendricks; sometime Sun Ra Arkestra bassist, Juini Booth, and regular Ahmad Jamal sideman, Sabu Adeyola (also of Kamal & The Brothers), have graced his groups too. At famous night spots all over Buffalo's East Side and on excursions to Manhattan's storied jazz clubs, Jaman has shared the stage with some of the most illustrious names in jazz and blues: Big Joe Turner, Muddy Waters, Joe Henderson, Ruth Brown, Frank Morgan, Woody Shaw, Sonny Stitt, and many others. His eponymous group, Jaman, was formed in 1970; they toured the US and Canada steadily. He became one of Buffalo's true jazz stalwarts, and so he remains. But despite a life lived deep within the music, Jaman only recorded a single LP, 1974's Sweet Heritage. Pressed in tiny quantities by the Mark Records custom service, Sweet Heritage featured the regular Jaman group playing a mixture of covers and originals. The whole LP showcases an ensemble in complete control, and with the flying, spiritual sound of "Free Will" and the Latin-tinged "In The Fall of The Year" -- both Jaman originals -- the album has since become a legendary collector's classic. 180 gram vinyl.

ANDO, UMEKO Ihunke 2LP
2020 repress. Umeko Ando (1932-2004) was a folk singer from Japan. She was a representative of the Ainu culture on the Hokkaido Island in the north of Japan. Ihunke is her first album which was recorded with the Ainu musician and dub producer Oki Kano in 2000. It was released on CD in Japan only and is finally available on vinyl. Ihunke follows 2017's single Iuta Upopo (PING 058EP) which had been received with overwhelming enthusiasm and was quickly sold out. The 16 Ainu songs on Ihunke are delicate, natural gems. They are built on Oki Kano's tonkori patterns (a five-string harp), over which Umeko Ando develops her repetitive, mantric vocals, often in a call-and-response manner. Oki Kano is one of very few professional tonkori players who performs worldwide with his Oki Dub Ainu Band. The songs possess a mystical energy -- when crows call accurately with Ando's brittle voice in the first song, it seems like natural powers join in with her music. Her voice sounds like animals of the sky and the forest. Oki Kano: "It was a lot of fun to record with Umeko Ando. Many Ainu hesitate to break from tradition -- if Umeko hadn't been so flexible to work with the younger generation and recording technology, this album would never have happened. Our sessions were intense, and we were proud and happy about making such beautiful music." Only recently (in 2008) have the Ainu officially been acknowledged as indigenous people who are culturally independent from Japan. This record is an example of how their music has been passed on through generations in the underground Ainu communities while it was oppressed by the Japanese hegemony. It deserves a huge audience. Includes liner notes and download code.

RAHBEK & FREDERIK VALENTIN, LOKE Elephant LP
The combined forces of Frederik Valentin and Loke Rahbek ?rst found a way into the world in 2017 with the album Buy Corals Online (EMEGO 247LP). Together they now present Elephant, an eight-track album that composes an inquisitive space with its parts. The economy of movement across Rahbek and Valentin's new collaborative album makes for a gentle transmission of its abstract intimacies. This presence, which appeared in glimpses on their previous work Buy Corals Online, is shaped by the delicate interplay between acoustic instrumentation and synthetically rendered sounds. Hauntingly melodic at times, the album feels like a suite of uncanny lullabies that grant access to realities that can only be found in dreams. Rahbek and Valentin are always leading you somewhere and showing you something-- one piece of the scene at a time, coming and going with different parts of a puzzle that eventually settles into a complete form. And through all this you perceive an inviting restlessness on their behalf, encouraging us to stray further and further into the private space of Elephant. Valentin is perhaps best known for his work in the exquisite atypical pop group Kyo, though his wide-reaching music and videography practices covertly underpin his ?agship projects. Most recently, Valentin has been working with Yung Lean as both producer on his Nectar album (2019) as Jonatan Leandoer127 as well as on their commission for Sweden's Cullberg Ballet. As Croatian Amor, Rahbek has made similar forays into unworldly pop and his work with Christian Stadsgaard as Damien Dubrovnik has been as critical as their cofounding of Posh Isolation. Modest interventions from processed ?eld-recordings and semi-erupting synths invite you to zoom in enough to hear the human hand. An attention to listening, to how sounds cradle the small movements and gestures that naturally accompany the playing of guitar, piano, and viola, is acutely developed by Rahbek and Valentin. It's in this way that Elephant persuades ou that even small stories unfurl into the most intricate and tremendous of sagas. "In Waves" features CTM.

HACKEDEPICCIOTTO The Current CD
The Current is the fourth album Alexander Hacke and Danielle De Picciotto have recorded under their hackedepicciotto moniker recorded since becoming nomads in 2010. It is their most powerful album yet. After composing desert drones for their previous album Perseverantia (POTOMAK 125171, 2016) and dark foreboding melodies for Menetekel (POTOMAK 150841/150842), their new album moves forwards, gaining in speed and energy. Alexander Hacke's background with Einstürzende Neubauten can be felt in the many rhythmic tracks. "We had the urge to include more percussive elements and electronic sounds to create a powerful rhythmic feel. A wilder and more danceable element. Something to get all of us on our feet, and moving. Away from depression and hopelessness." The classic background of Danielle de Picciotto has become more prominent as well. Glorious choirs and violin harmonies flow throughout the album giving it an almost symphonic sound. The artist couple calls their music "cinematic-drone" and their album sounds like the film track to an apocalyptic feature-length film, hopefully with a happy end.

C.A.R. Crossing Prior Street LP
Canadian-born, London-based producer, songwriter and vocalist Chloé Raunet, aka C.A.R., releases her third album, Crossing Prior Street, on Ransom Note Records. Full of bruised-but-ultimately-hopeful electronic art pop, the album tells Chloé's story of escaping a broken childhood in Vancouver, and finding her way to the lonely streets of East London, at the tender age of 16. "The one time in my life I lived alone, it was on a street called Prior. I was halfway through my teens and the place had lasting impact. This was a tiny, creaky flat, high in the eaves of an old wooden townhouse. Damp and cold, run down, sparsely furnished. Bare bulbs dangled from the ceiling, eyeing up the midnight visitors who'd come knowing at my fire escape. I'd let them in and lie limp as they crawled all over me. Thin mattress on the floor, welcoming whatever company I could get." An endorsement of the personal journey, Crossing Prior Street is the sound of Raunet reconciling different sides of herself emotionally, artistically, and sonically. The sparse production of minimal elements gives the album a direct punch. Booming drum machines, dissonant cold wave, skewed post punk, and esoteric pop juxtapose but join in strange and interesting ways. Chloé cites this clash as a defining characteristic of the album, which was equally catalyzed by her love of raw machine music and the catharsis of song. Like the sun breaking through clouds, shining onto a grey rainy day, the album glistens. Although proudly pop, there's nothing idealistic, fake, or saccharine here, as Raunet captures realistic glimpses of beauty found in everyday life, mixed amidst the gloom.

HIDDEN SPHERES 1985 12"
Hidden Spheres is the alter ego of Manchester's Tom Harris, who first made his mark on the underground circuit with his release The Bloos on Moods & Grooves, before following it up with the much in demand Waiting on Lobster Theremin offshoot, Distant Hawaii. Here, Tom joins the Scissor & Thread family, the Brooklyn label founded by Francis Harris, and home to music that traverses a number of boundaries. Hidden Spheres fits right in -- the five-track 1985 EP blends house, broken beat, ambient, jazz, and other elements into a heady brew. "King Tut" starts proceedings, a laidback jazzy groove, rich in textures and soulful flourishes. "My Names" touches on the UK broken beat legacy of 4 Hero and Bugz in the Attic -- an off-kilter groove layered with sweet jazz and house inflected licks. "Karl" is a much more direct dancefloor track, albeit with the deepness that we expect from Hidden Spheres. The penultimate track "1985" steps into the unconventional house vibes of Detroit's third wave. "Soon We'll" finishes up the EP -- a supremely jazzy piece built around the sax, piano and washes of strings, and ambient elements -- a superb closer for a deep and heartfelt release.

DALPANE, MARCO Le Citta Invisibili (Le Citta e i Morti) LP
"Marco Dalpane's unreleased recording (mainly known for the cult album Scorie (SOAVE 010LP) released with Tiziano Popoli) produced in 1991 for Radio Rai as an accompaniment to the reading of Italo Calvino's Le città invisibili ('Invisible Cities'). First thing you notice is how Marco Dalpane personal soundtrack for Le città invisibili could be seen as a link towards the combinatorial approach adopted by Italo Calvino in the book, where he used the language as a semiotic system and the literature as a mechanism of possibilities, with the reader becoming active part in the process. You can see Dalpane detaching from a linear handling of the compositional resources, working instead with computer algorithms and emerging with a sound-sphinx that multiplies the listening interpretations, a sound that is characterized in form and timbre but at the same time is full of suggestions and summoning elements that the listener has to relate. In this it's evident a constant in the Dalpane's music, its sensitive side, away from every technical or conceptual precondition. In the five tracks created for this soundtrack, that finally are collected in this album, as in his other works, Marco is always capable to decode aesthetics coordinates of the cultural or temporary universe of reference, but mainly he is the vehicle of an artistic vision that is plausible incarnation of the essence of things, the very spirit of being a musician." --Christian Zingales Color vinyl; edition of 300.

TOOP/PAUL BURWELL, DAVID Wounds LP
Song Cycle present the first reissue of Wounds by David Toop and Paul Burwell. Originally released in 1980 on Toop's Quartz! label, the album is representative of a seminal moment within the British music scene evolved around the London Musicians Collective in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Founded in 1976 by a group of improvising musicians and sound artists including Evan Parker, Peter Cusack, Lol Coxhill, Sylvia Hallet, Max Eastley, the LMC contributed to shape a new generation of free improvisers with broader interests ranging from the music of John Stevens, Evan Parker, and Cornelius Cardew, to non-western music experiences. David Toop and Paul Burwell came to know each other precisely in these crucial moments, to start a long-lasting collaboration on two separate but intertwined projects a trio with the artist and poet Bob Cobbing, and an improvisation duo. As result of the latter, the nine tracks included in Wounds are edited from a single performance at the LMC, date 30.6.1979. Recorded by Max Eastley and Russ Wood, these shows saw the employment of different musical instruments as well an odd number of found objects placed in front of the artists, on the floor, ready to be picked up and played. Electric guitar, flute, cassette, water, rubbish, explosives, six strings harp, bamboo fiddle, whistle were only a few of the wider arrange of instruments at the disposal of the two. The result is an ambivalent album, suspended between the unfolding of the time of performance, and the circularity of the ritual. And if the collage of texts appearing on the artwork demonstrates a certain disapproval and skepticism toward the progress of society, Wounds seems also suggesting a possible cure. The improvised music, the use of non-canonical instruments, the presence of pre-recorded sounds coming, seems indeed to be an open invitation to the listeners to abandon the old conventions and to search for a new system of relationships.

DORAY & LES ASOCIAUX ASSOCIES, PHILIPPE Ramasse-Miettes Nucleaires LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first ever reissue of Philippe Doray & Les Asociaux Associés' Ramasse-Miettes Nucléaires, originally released in 1977. In 1976, the Asociaux Associés (antisocial associates, TN) led by Philippe Doray (Rotomagus, Ruth, Crash), recorded the first of the two albums under their own name: Ramasse-Miettes Nucléaires. On synthesizer, Doray fires off his disturbing poetry over psychedelic pop, voodoo rock, off-kilter krautrock, approximate swing -- But if the music is iconoclastic (bringing to mind as much Hendrix as Areski, Ash Ra Tempel as Berrocal...), one thing is certain: Ramasse-Miettes Nucléaires is one of the best albums of obscure experimental song ever recorded. It is no surprise that, on the Nurse With Wound list that Steven Stapleton inserted in the first album of his legendary musical project, the name of Philippe Doray can be found between that of the Doo-Dooettes and Jean Dubuffet: his music is genuinely original and, what is more, ahead of its time. It was in 1977 that the first album by Philippe Doray, Ramasse-Miettes Nucléaires, was published on Gratte-Ciel, a label created by the journalist from Rock & Folk Jean-Marc Bailleux and run by Jean-Marc Patrat and José Serré. Encouraged by his wild experience in Rotomagus, a formidable rock band which swept through Rouen, for sure, but also further afield -- as Julian Cope was himself inspired, years later, by their explosivity -- Doray brought a team to this album which was both untamed and ready to fight to defend it's terrible (and trembling) poetry. Backed by his Asociaux Associés (antisocial associates, TN), the man from Rouen let his fantasy run wild and cried out again: "sing with me, and don't be afraid to clap your hands!" And so, much of French popular music was shaken: the ball in Doray's pinball machine had struck Jimi Hendrix then Alain Goraguer, then Ash Ra Tempel and onto Areski, then T-Rex followed by Jac Berrocal... As far as the texts are concerned, just take a listen. Doray's poetry is schizophrenic: nurtured in the Normandy countryside, it relates paranoid tales of booby-trapped towns, Levi's jeans, Prisunic supermarkets, and plastic dolls... Crumbs of reality which he sucked up to create the album that Souffle Continu Records and Thierry Müller, mastering (with Ruth, Crash, and Illitch too) spit out again fifty years later, with many good memories. Licensed from Philippe Doray. Remastered from the master tapes; obi strip; includes text sheet insert.

DORAY & LES ASOCIAUX ASSOCIES, PHILIPPE Nouveaux Modes Industriels LP
Souffle Continu Records present the first ever reissue of Philippe Doray & Les Asociaux Associés' Nouveaux Modes Industriels, originally released in 1980. Between 1978 and 1980, the Asociaux Associés (antisocial associates, TN) recorded the second of the two albums which appeared under their name: Nouveaux Modes Industriels. Philippe Doray, with the help of his 'Associés, evermore iconoclastic and numerous, backs up his anguished poetry with customized krautrock, hallucinatory pop, and rock Suicide. Much more than a memory of the then surprising (and disturbing) swinging Rouen, this album is an intergalactic ambush. Following the publication, in 1977, of the first of two albums under his own name, Ramasse-Miettes Nucléaires (FFL 058LP), on the label Gratte-Ciel, Philippe Doray didn't waste any time before writing new obscure and experimental songs. As proof, between May 1978 and January 1980, with his Asociaux Associés (antisocial associates, TN), he recorded ten of them in the farm in which he lived (and shared) close to Rouen. In 1980, Nouveaux Modes Industriels was published thanks to the support of Invisible, the label of the Société Coopérative d'Ouvriers-Producteurs Artistiques (S.C.O.P.A., the Cooperative Society of Artistic Worker/Producers, TN) run by, amongst others, the ex-manager of Crium Delirium, Jacques Pasquier. This meant that Doray had free rein for his electric poetry, his personal delirium, to be heard. He had already shaken up French music with his mix of pop, krautrock, and free jazz; a few months later he would undergo a change which would be the precursor of his future projects. Before collaborating with Thierry Müller under the names Ruth and Crash, Doray let loose one last time, with his Asociaux Associés, his anguished poetry into the face of the urban labyrinth, his nuclear dynamite... It is no coincidence if the album cover is similar to those by Urban Sax, the spirit of the times was anguish as a creator of beauty. Doray's version had the advantage of still knowing how to sing. Never forgetting his interest for dance, the musician gets Cluster moving to a boogaloo, foments a Suicide on synthetic jaw harp or invents elevator music for tower blocks... All of which hotchpotch feeds into his Nouveaux Modes Industriels. If the last track of the album states "no after-sales service", it is simply because there is no need. Licensed from Philippe Doray. LP version. "I have always been fascinated by what happens the first time a group of musicians take on a piece of music. I wanted to explore this and found some dear friends who felt the same and whose musicianship I admire. The concept on this album is quite simple. I spent two days, the 13th and 14th of August 2019, writing; short stories, some chord progressions, some lyrics, some songs. A week later I invited Tonbruket to my house and we spent 24 hours -- the 21st and 22nd of August 2019 -- recording approximately two hours of music -- everything is live and first takes except for the backing vocals. When we mixed it, we chose the stuff that fit on a 40-minute LP." --Christian KjellvanderSustaining a long and successful career, Christian Kjellvander is among Sweden's finest singer/songwriters and performers since his early days in acts like Loosegoats and Songs of Soil. His latest album Wild Hxmans (TR 419CD/LP, 2019), was hailed as one of his finest outlets so far and got nominated at the Swedish Grammys. A true story teller with a strong sense of melody who's frequently touring internationally. KJELLVANDERTONBRUKET Doom Country CD
Tonbruket has had an unprecedented run of Swedish Grammy-winning albums, four in a row, since forming in 2010. The band's intriguing fusion of psychedelic free form, progressive rock, American roots music, and jazz has attracted audiences all over Europe. MEYER, MATTHIAS Strangely Enough EP 12"
Strangely Enough is the long-awaited label project from Matthias Meyer. As an artist Meyer is renown for his storied, emotion laden DJ sets, regularly linking multiple genres with considerable aplomb. His new moniker is an effort to transmit this recognizable style to his musical productions. From deep house to breakbeat, Meyer will indulge his varied tastes all the while keeping it under the umbrella of his distinguished style. The label kicks off with two original productions from Matthias himself, "Strangely Enough" and "Fantazy". The title track "Strangely Enough" is a quintessential Matthias Meyer effort. Combining a dark, vibrant groove with haunting vocal snippets, it perfectly encapsulates his mission for the new imprint. As a composition, it sits in that indefinable space between the dancefloor and the after party, a powerful weapon in the right hands. "Fantazy", the B side of the EP, follows no fixed form. It is a jaunt from breaks to driving house with an emotive breakdown which prompts thoughts of escapism from the structures of modern music. It is often remarked that fantasy is the creative measure of a man, and in this cause that assertion runs true, with Meyer showcasing his wide musical palate.

NAKAYAMA, EIJI Aya's Samba LP
2020 repress. Johnny's Disk record is an independent jazz label, run by the owner of jazz cafe Kaiunbashi No Johnny located in Rikuzentakata City in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. The legendary label released a string of albums of high-quality, but down-to-earth music, spanning from modern jazz, avant-garde jazz to left-field pop. Albums such as Farewell My Johnny / Left Alone (1980) and Aya's Samba (1978) have reached cult status among fans as some of the best works to come out of the Japanese jazz scene. The Japanese jazz classic, Aya's Samba, was a debut effort by bassist Eiji Nakayama, who played as part of Elvin Jones' Jazz Machine and toured with Don Friedman. This album is an important release in the Johnny's Disk catalog, not only because it is the first ever release, but also because the owner hearing the band play was the reason why the label came to be. Aya's Samba is a mellow jazz samba in minor key that's considered a Japanese jazz classic. Slow ballad "Yellow Living" is drenched in melancholy with emotive keys and sax notes.

CONN, BOBBY Recovery CD
Bobby Conn on Recovery: "What's the point of recovery if we were never really healthy to begin with? I started working on this record about four years ago, thinking of the American obsession with self-help, self-care, and self-empowerment as a cruel and cheap substitute for helping each other. It's a concept that rewards those that have the money to help themselves, and blames those that don't for not trying hard enough. Then there were some elections. Now there is a narrative of 'recovering' our stronger, bolder, racially pure, cultural and economic glory days. And then some of my friends started getting sick, or dying or committed suicide . . . I was really into 10cc, J Dilla, Liaisons Dangereuses, Jean-Claude Vannier, Anna Meredith, Slade, D'Angelo, etc. when writing this record, but I'm sure you can hear it for yourself. Musically, this is a collaboration with my partner Monica BouBou on violin and vocals and our super-band of drummer Josh Johannpeter, bassist Jim 'Dallas' Cooper, keyboardist and string player Billie Howard, guitarist Devin Davis, and longtime sound artist DJ LeDeuce. We recorded it over many months in a basement. There is a cameo by synth genius Felix Kubin on 'Brother'. Mixed by the brilliant Tobias Levin and Hannes Plattmeier in Hamburg, Germany. Some notes on each tune: 'Recovery' -- the never-ending journey and an addiction unto itself. 'Disposable Future' -- amazing new technology gives us unlimited choice delivered through devices we cannot control; is this what we were dreaming of? 'Good Old Days' -- nostalgia for the lies of old white men will kill us all. 'No Grownups' -- from the perspective of a teenager trapped in a world where all the adults are self-deluded, irresponsible narcissists in terrible clothes. 'Brother' -- it's easy to ignore the suffering that surrounds us everyday. 'On The Nose' -- grandpa's racism now rebranded as edgy rebellion for the internet generation. 'Bijou' -- an ode to a recently closed gay porn theatre in Chicago that was part of the struggle for sexual liberty. 'Disaster' -- our masters imagine themselves as heroes when the mob storms the gates and burns the palace to the ground. 'Young Man's Game' -- you can't play the same game forever. 'Always Already' -- a misreading of Derrida, Marx and Foucault turned into a nihilist anthem. With apologies to Lionel Richie."

LOVE, CALVIN Night Songs LP
There is a palpable mood at the heart of Canadian perennial Calvin Love's work. Only once in a blue moon comes an artist that seems so familiar yet out of space. Love arrives as an enigma, a crooning, haunted voice. With nods in comparison to Roy Orbison and Bryan Ferry, Love has certainly drawn subtle inspiration from the classic singers of the '60s, '70s, and '80s. But Love's work reflects on the modern journey. Songs for the introverts, songs for lonely and hopeful, and songs to soundtrack our lives through the quiet hours, and all the places our minds drift to as we head toward the uncertain future of the 21st century. Emerging from the same vibrant Canadian scene as contemporaries Andy Shauf, Mac Demarco, and Sean Nicholas Savage, Love has established himself as a rare caliber of singer by blending obsession with the beauty of artifice and the inner systems of real and natural things. It is this infallible match that makes Love's work so strange and inviting. Active since 2011, Love has toured relentlessly throughout Canada, USA, Europe, and Asia. He has also worked with producers Richard Swift (The Shins, The Black Keys) and Gus Seyffert (Beck, Roger Waters), as well as opened on support tours for Jonathan Wilson, Weyes Blood, and Of Montreal. Love released his 2012 debut album New Radar on Aquarium Drunkard imprint, Autumn Tone, followed by 2015 sophomore album Super Future on Arts & Crafts as well as numerous cover albums, singles, and EPs and the 2018 release of Highway Dancer. Limited vinyl-only release.

WALTON Abyss EP 12"
Walton returns to Tectonic to drop his latest EP of deadly dancefloor weapons, as Tectonic celebrates being 15 years old. With releases dropping on Illian Tape and Kaizen, Manchester's Walton is a producer in high demand for his inimitable style the blends grime and pirate radio aesthetics with forward-thinking dance floor sensibilities. "Scooped" opens the EP with mood setting pads and 128bpm drums, in preparation for a gut-wrenching bass line, bringing elements of grime, dubstep, and techno altogether. Following on next is "SBWYS". The title references a vocal sample that decorates the rough 138bpm beats, "Sound boy watch ya space!" Point made. "Smashed Crabs" takes a 2003-era grime style rhythmic framework and paints over hard bass sonics and laser blips at 134bpm. Lastly, the title track "Abyss" continues the rave lazer aesthetic and tempo of "Smashed Crabs", but sending things more intergalactic in trajectory, wrapping up a great EP in fine style. Definitely a bit of something for most dancefloors, crafted in the way of the Walton.

Escape Artist has got some new tricks. Temporal Cast welcome Melbourne local to the imprint with this stinkin' four-tracker, showcasing exactly what makes Escape Artist's sound so special. "Neurolink" is a temporal transmission with crisp percussion laying out the structure. Fleshed out by luscious pads and that genius warm ride that builds you up 'til the high-hat hits you into a higher state of consciousness. That's until "Designer Reality" pulls you right out and suspends you into a zonked out dance-floor dream. It's a textural, meditative chugger. The title track, "Metamorphosis", really is a transformative experience and the more we listen to it, the more we can't believe it. Escape Artist creates, over seven minutes, a tranquil yet driving soundscape and it feels like taking a whooshing meteor ride through the sky, surfing the valley of your dreams. The EP is rounded out by a penetrating acid line, more classy breaks, a 'lil bit of siren and a sonic meltdown -- thanks to "Techno Emergency". Get on the Escape Artist rocket!

EDINBURGH LEISURE Die Gefahr Im Jazz LP
Edinburgh Leisure is the partnership of Keith Farquhar and T Fraser. Die Gefahr Im Jazz is their first recorded work together. Farquhar is an established visual artist whose work has been exhibited internationally. He is also the former vocalist of The Male Nurse, sister band to Country Teasers, best known for their two Peel sessions in 1997 and 98. Fraser is one half of the duo ********, a collaboration also known as [Fraser, Ormston], which featured at Counterflows 2019 and also includes artist Ailie Ormston. Since 2016, Edinburgh Leisure have recorded two albums, Contemporary Art In Digital Culture and Die Gefahr Im Jazz. They have performed in various venues, galleries and club spaces. Recorded mostly on iPhone 5s, Die Gefahr Im Jazz merges the avant-instrumentation of staple guns, masking tape, supplement bottles, and blister packs with Apple-hack sounds and misuses to create "a harmonious cacophony of mammal and machine processes," a genre the partnership playfully categorize as "iPod Shuffle." This is music for Genius Bars and ghost tours, office parties, and drinks receptions -- songs about RBS, PPI, BBC Planet Earth, and Ikea. Written largely with the Rhyme Zone search engine tool, Edinburgh Leisure's work is often that of idle authorship and barefaced piracy. Publishers beware of brash homages, monosyllabic anthems, and crass interludes. Die Gefahr Im Jazz is like a driverless truck -- free and dangerous in the post-cultural landscape of dark-net markets and business parks, where the streets have no name.

LEG, THE Chromatic Perversion LP
At the core of The Leg's long-term trio are mercurial vocalist and driving force Dan Mutch, cellist, producer, and one-man scratch orchestra Pete Harvey, and percussive polymath Alan Scurlock. The three have played together for the best part of twenty years, ever since Mutch unleashed his first band, Khaya, into the world before it morphed into Desc, eventually realigning as The Leg. Chromatic Perversion features guitarist James Metcalfe and bass player John Mackie swelling the ranks. Metcalfe comes to The Leg after stints in The Pineapple Chunks led to his current tenure in Zed Penguin. The Leg's frenetic folk-punk gallop has never sounded so focused or -- at moments -- as euphoric as on this latest opus. Harnessing the driven mayhem of its quartet of predecessors: 8 Songs by The Leg (2006), What Happened To The Shrunken Tina Turner? (2009), An Eagle To Saturn (2012), and Oozing A Crepuscular Light (2013), Chromatic Perversion is infused with a more upbeat and organic skip. From the opening "Radge Almond Mutches," the album is the sound of getting one's head together in the country, but not always liking what one finds. Beyond the drum-skitters and scrape of strings, a rustic old-worn charm nevertheless pervades beyond the foreboding urgency of the likes of "Impossible Colours," and on "Trouble at The Centre Of The Universe" seems to dance a jig to life itself. At the other end of the woods shades of Nirvana by way of Black Sabbath seem to possess "Those Dogs" whilst coming out the other side of the tunnel, a cover of Moondog's "High On A Rocky Ledge" melds the joie de vivre of The Move with the most manic string action this side of John Cale a la "Venus In Furs."

EVRITIKI ZYGIA Ormenion LP
LP version. Gatefold cover; printed insert and download code. Teranga Beat presents Ormenion, a record by the group Evritiki Zygia. Ormenion is a historical region that dates back to the Byzantine Empire. It is the northernmost inhabited region of Greece, where the last railway station of the country is located. During the 1920s, it was inhabited by refugees coming from the North and Eastern Thrace. Immigration is central to the history of the region of Thrace, where many songs refer to refugees and moving populations. The name of this particular place was selected as the album title due to its delicate cultural and geographic status: Ormenion coincides with the borders of three different countries (Greece, Bulgaria, and Turkey) and its history counts several waves of immigration that gave way to cultural and even linguistic exchange -- elements that obviously left their mark on the group. The group Evritiki Zygia was founded in 2007 by five musicians who played mostly in local festivals, their main concern being the preservation and evolution of the Thracian musical tradition. The collaboration with Teranga Beat helped this project evolve even further. Forms of arrangement different than the ones used in local feasts and festivals, were introduced giving more space to the dynamics of the instruments and allowing musicians to show both their improvisational and compositional skills. The distinctively psychedelic element of Thracian music was enhanced with the introduction of the CRB-Diamond 800 organ and the Moog, giving the whole project a hybrid sound with a unique identity. The album contains both covers of traditional songs and original compositions. The band's highest point was their appearance at the Womex Festival in 2018, where their music was presented for the first time in front of an international audience. Ormenion was recorded on an analog 24-track tape Otari MX 80 in two sessions that took place on May 18 and 19 2019. It is a live recording that captures the energy of the group's live performances. CD version comes in digipak with slipcase, and includes a booklet with photos and liner notes outlining the story of the band.

CURRIE & JOEL HOLMES, CODY Metropolis 12"
Here comes the second Toy Tonics EP by Joel Holmes & Cody Currie. The new Berlin based duo that works on a fresh musical style that combines jazz, broken beats, soul and NY house. Joel, the American jazz pianist, is a former member of Roy Hargrove's Grammy-winning jazz-hop band and member of Carl Craig's synthesizer ensemble. Joel is living in Berlin now, where he is involved in the new vibrant Neo-Jazz scene. (Yes! Berlin used to be a techno city, but it's becoming a jazz town now!) In Berlin, Joel throws monthly jam sessions (the Urban Base Jam) where the creme de la creme of Berlins ex-pad jazz musicians meets up. Crazy things can happen here. Like when Erykah Badu played Berlin in 2019 and her complete band came to jam at Joel's session after their gig. Joel teamed up with Cody Currie: 24-year-old London born talent, who already made waves in the house scene. Cody is known as a stylized producer, with a unique recognizable sound. Much of his craft was homed in studying a bachelors in music in London. His most known work by now might be a jazzy reinvention of "Devils Shoestring". With his new works Cody is coming away from sampling, working only with live instrumentation. Joel & Cody both live in Berlin now where they met Toy Tonics head honcho Mathias "Kapote" Modica. And when they met there was a vibe instantly. All three have their roots in jazz music and share similar ideas about how dance-music should evolve in 2020.

PHANTOM HORSE Als Ob LP
2017 release. Music for post-apocalyptic deserts. Experimental synth-sounds with hypnotic percussions -- imagine Moondog performing with John Carpenter and Cabaret Voltaire. Relating to their live appearances, Phantom Horse might be named a lazy combo since they are not to be found on stage all too often. Yet their withdrawn approach fits this album very well; Als Ob is once more a journey through inwardness, a contemplative excursion to the electronic outback, still friendly asking for your attention. There's plenty of things to discover if you listen mindfully; the Phantom Horse rides out where you as a listener like to be lonely. Those ancient synths are still around, playing their melodies as if* there were no time thieves waiting around the corner (*That is what "Als Ob" means). Altogether, the sound has become more electric yet not eclectic, the duo has de-krauted, describing their sound as "more ritual", but of course avoiding any kind of mysticism and fairy-tale dullness. Since 2015's Different Forces (also on Umor Rex), Phantom Horse have fleshed out their friendly stoicism that hauls their experimental synth sounds into the area of songs -- maybe even pop songs that aren't tangible at least. Welcome to the insular state of Phantom Horse.

Incorporating a diverse range of influences, from samba to no wave, Handle, a three-piece from Manchester (now based between Manchester/London/Brussels) made up of Giulio Erasmus and Nirvana Heire, former members of D.U.D.S (the first British band to sign to Castle Face) and Leo Hermitt, a genderqueer multidisciplinary artist renowned for their challenging, thought-provoking work in the city's arts and literary scenes. The group mesh politics with a trans experience of time and a vibrant, avant-garde freedom of approach. Handle make a uniquely minimal sound, buoyed by poetic, urgent vocals. Each instrument (bass, drums, keyboard and voice) is permitted its own space, yet somehow the result is a brilliantly unified yet understated sonic experience that demands then commands your attention. Powered by looping, hypnotic synth lines, quaking flexes of bass, clattering tribal percussion and expeditious, often agitated vocals that cordially sprint, Handle's songs -- all of which clock in around the two-minute mark -- owe as much to performance poetry as they do to the vibrancy of post-punk and new wave. In these times of anxiety and confusion, Handle provide a much-needed dose of musical catharsis, albeit disorientating at times, pre-empting sense from the shards of sound they gather about themselves. "Life's Work" begins with isolated swells of pitch before driving full throttle into an exuberant rhythmic workout. "Sunday Morning" shares this elasticated feel for melody and communication, twisting about itself in rubbery fashion. "Coagulate" is more disembodied from the pulse, but similarly retains a boldness of vision. "Step By Step" showcases what Handle excel at, it's a clangorous leviathan of beat-forward dance punk, peppered with Leo's fluid vocal inertia. It's dizzying yet divinely exuberant. "Punctured Time" evokes the same cascading flow "Punctured time, bicycle wheel, what if I told you that your lips were like venus, lips were like what? Lips were like venus and that my tongue was a trampoline?" sings Leo amid undulating bass, toppling drums and jabs of keyboard ambience. Handle make music occupied by dark shapes that move beneath a roiling surface: jolting, shattering, cracking, smoothed, bounded, punctuated. Handle's debut album In Threes is a collection of frenetic sounds for frenzied forms. In Threes was recorded and mixed by Robin Williams and follows on from the band's previous EP Demonstrations (2018), released through their own imprint Absolute Fiction.

ELIA Y ELIZABETH La Onda de Elia y Elizabeth LP
2020 repress; LP version. Includes "Todo en La Vida", the track featured in the Netflix Narcos series, "an ode to patience propelled by a yearning riff that wouldn't have been out of place in a Gainsbourg perv-jam").The recordings that the sisters Elia and Elizabeth Fleta made, hand-in-hand with music arranger Jimmy Salcedo in the early '70s in their native Colombia, remained hidden like lost pearls in the undervalued musical pop history of Latin America until today. Their concise and natural mix of styles sways between soft-pop with a touch of tropical-pastoral funk, singer-songwriter sweetened by the subtle perfume of Caribbean music and the psychedelia of a world in the midst of discovering all the possibilities offered by the recording studio. These elements blend graciously and fortuitously, brimming with freshness, in a perfect partnership of sharp melodies with lyrics inspired by a genuine juvenile curiosity about life's mysteries, love and nature in its simplest forms. Elia and Elizabeth Fleta Mallol were born in Bogotá by chance. Their parents were both from Spain but met and got married in Barranquila, and soon after moved to Bogotá. Their father, Miguel Fleta, was the son of the renowned tenor of the same name. Given the family's musical history, the sisters were fully supported and motivated by their parents, who bought them acoustic guitars and encouraged them to take lessons. Mr. Fleta's work would take them to Cali, back to Barranquilla, Lima, and finally Madrid and Barcelona in 1971. In Spain, Elia y Elizabeth were invited to a televised homage for their famous grandfather and were heard by composer and musical arranger Juan Carlos Calderon, who had previously worked with their aunts, the popular duo of sisters Elia and Paloma Fleta. Immediately, he invited them to record under his direction two songs in the studio of the Zafiro label from Barcelona. The chosen songs were "Cae la lluvia" and "Fue una lagrima," two of Elia's compositions. Both songs were released on a 45rpm single, although it lacked any kind of promotion given that, yet again, the Fleta family was about to move back to Colombia. Back in Barranquilla, after performing at a charity event with their friends from the Bakarett Blues Band, the sisters were heard by Graciela Arango de Tobon, a wealthy lady and composer who recommended them to Alvaro Arango. The latter was the musical director of Codiscos, subsidiary of Zeida, a label with headquarters in Medellín which was looking for a female duo with the characteristics of the Fleta sisters. After hearing them sing over the phone, Mr. Alvaro traveled to Barranquilla the next day, where he formalized his intention to record the duo. Soon after, Elia and Elizabeth were in the studios of Codiscos in Medellín. Humberto Moreno, head producer, entrusted the musical arrangements and direction to the pianist Jimmy Salcedo, a Mompox native. A talented and charismatic musician from the bohemian and jazz scene in Bogotá, Salcedo was a former member of The Be-Bops who had become a TV interviewer and started his own band, La Onda Tres. The support of Jimmy Salcedo and his band contributed to the Fleta duo becoming regulars in the local media. During their meteoric career, the sisters were the winners of the Coco Festival in Barranquilla, the recipients of the Principe de Oro -- an award given by the eponymous radio station -- and were nominated for the Onda Award as the best new band of 1972. A second LP appeared the following year and the TV shows continued weekly, leaving Elia less and less time to devote to her studies, which she was most interested in. She decided to talk to her family and explain to them her desire to stop her television performances and instead completely devote herself to her university education in music pedagogy. Elizabeth, meanwhile, understood and accepted her sister's decision and also quit the world of entertainment. Includes a booklet with liner notes by compiler Carlos Icaza and photos from Elia Fleta's personal archive.

BATAAN, JOE Call My Name LP
2020 repress. "This whole project grew out of a song called 'Cycles Of You', which I had written around 2000-2001 with the guitarist and bassist of my band at the time, Easy. The chord progression and vocal melody really reminded me of Joe Bataan, and it occurred to me that it wouldn't be impossible to get him into the studio to do a guest vocal if we ever recorded it. I had met Bataan a few years before at Nuyorican Poets Cafe in my neighborhood. Around this time Bataan was playing out again, so I went to the show to see him and find out if he'd be interested in doing some vocals with us. He was agreeable, so we decided to turn it into a Joe Bataan session and do 'Cycles Of You'. When I got the opportunity from Vampisoul to do a full album, I was hoping Bataan and I could write some songs together, but our schedules proved tough to coordinate. I figured the best way to go about it was to do most of the work and just have him come sing on it. The rhythm section was a band called TransLove Airways that I formed in 2002. To this core group I added pieces from a few other local bands: The Middle Initials, who are a great Temptations/Main Ingredient-style vocal group, and members of an incredible Latin band called Grupo Latin Vibe, who were responsible for almost all the percussion and the vibraphone solo on 'I'm The Fool Pt. 2'. There was also some fine trombone playing by Aaron Johnson of Antibalas and great flute work by Neal Sugarman and my cousin Sonny. Preparing for Call My Name, I listened to a lot of different records from the mid to late '70s. It has now been over ten years since the completion of this record, and so much has changed. The Call My Name sessions took place when Daptone had just moved to Bushwick, its now-famous current location. Gabe Roth was my first call whenever I had any recording to do. He was yet to become the legendary figure at the center of the Daptone/Truth & Soul universe. He was just a humble guy with an incredible talent and an impeccable ear who made authentic sounding records with inexpensive analog gear." -- Daniel Collás, producer of Call My Name

CECCHETTO, ROBERTO Humanity CD
Humanity is the newest album by Roberto Cecchetto, one the most original and eclectic guitarists on the European jazz scene, member of Enrico Rava's historic Electric Five band, renowned for his sonic experimentation and collaborations with the most important musicians in European jazz (Palle Danielsson, Richard Galliano, Paolo Fresu, Stefano Bollani, Paolino Dalla Porta, Lee Konitz, to name a few.) Cecchetto pairs with Lionel Loueke on guitar and Alessandro Paternesi on drums, weaving together rich and creative sonic textures into refined and genre-defying compositions. Soft melodic combinations and a rich harmonic palette are characteristic of Cecchetto's musical creations. An innovative guitar virtuoso and composer of West African origin, Loueke is member of the legendary Herbie Hancock touring band and has performed with leading figures of contemporary jazz. Loueke is one of the most in demand studio guitarists by world jazz gurus such as Wayne Shorter, Marcus Miller, Roy Hargrove, and Charlie Haden. Lionel Loueke and Roberto Cecchetto first met in New York City, an encounter which represented both an artistic and personal milestone. "After playing with Roberto in New York, I quickly realized that no musical territory was forbidden", says Loueke, "Our musical connection is evident and our styles are complementary, with a unique balance and interplay between our instruments. I can't wait to start our first tour together". Two well-matched and extraordinary guitarists with different experiences yet highly attuned to each other. United by a similar outlook, a strong passion, and curiosity for new horizons. Their first performance had been so mind-blowing that they resolved to take up this new duo project. Joining them is drummer Alessandro Paternesi who has been performing for over a decade and is one of the most highly sought-after Italian drummers. His intense concert activity has led him to perform together with internationally respected artists including Amil Stewart, Danilo Rea, Paolo Damiani, Gabriele Mirabassi, Javier Girotto, Fabio Zeppetella, Andrea Bocelli, Enzo Pietropaoli, Ada Montellanico, Franco Cerri.

JOS & ELI Mozar EP 12"
Rising Israeli talent Jos & Eli join the Watergate Recordsimprint with a pulsing four-tracker. With eyes and ears fixed on the future, there's always room for inspiring new talent at WG HQ. Jos & Eli bubbled to attention thanks to interesting releases on Diynamic, Sudbeat, and Noir Music, their productions at once striking and beautiful, imbued with a unique energy that's essential for any signing to Watergate Records. Both artists are musicians since childhood and their natural talent shines brightly on Mozar EP. The title track is driven by a woozy riff which sits atop a chugging bed of drums and seems to capture the stirring energy of their homeland. "Atomica" is similarly unique, with its persistent synth layers, delicate drums and stirring pads, and conjures an otherworldly atmosphere. Respected vocalist Jinadu joins them for "One", a unifying anthem in the making. Yotto contributes a classy re-work of "Atomica", keeping the impactful riff, but adding in harmonizing elements and plumping out the bass for an amplified peak-time hit.

MYSTERY KINDAICHI BAND, THE The Adventures of Kindaichi Kosuke LP
Repressed; LP version. Obi; includes four-page insert. Wewantsounds present the first official release outside of Japan for The Mystery Kindaichi Band's The Adventures of Kindaichi Kosuke, originally released in 1977. The "imaginary" soundtrack to the cult detective book series by writer Seishi Yokomizo is on many DJ want-lists. Arranged by soundtrack master Kentaro Haneda and featuring a mysterious group of the best '70s Japanese Funk musicians, the album is pure undiluted disco funk. Writer Seishi Yokomizo is an institution in Japan. He could be compared to Agatha Christie with his series of novels based on the adventures of detective Kosuke Kindaichi. The fictional character was born in 1946 with Yokomizo's first novel in the series and solved mysteries until the late '70s under Yokomizo's pen before the death of the writer in 1981. Yokomizo's novels have been a prime source for film and TV scenarios, so when, in 1977, Japanese label King Records decided to record a concept album based on the Kindaichi novels, it made complete sense. The writer was slightly surprised though. The concept album was arranged by pianist Kentaro Haneda, a key TV and film composer who has worked on many anime films and is also famous outside of Japan for composing the music for the video game Wizardry. For the album, he assembled a supergroup of some of the best Tokyo funk and city pop musicians. The long list includes jazz pianist Hideo Ichikawa who played on the 1971 Joe Henderson In Japan album, drummer Jun Moriya, who is on Joe Hisaichi's cult Wonder City Orchestra album (1982), percussionist Tadaomi Anai who played with disco singer Eri Ohno, trumpeter Koji Hadori who's featured on Haruomi Hosono's Pacific album (1978). Also present on the album are saxophonist Takeru Muraoka who plays on many Tatsuro Yamashita cult albums including For You (1982) and Spacy (1977), Kimiko Yamauchi (koto) who's on Akiko Yano's landmark 1976 album Japanese Girl (WWSCD 017CD/WWSLP 017LP), and last but not least, French hornist Koji Yamaguchi who plays on Yazuaki Shimizu's Kakashi (1982). Together they lay the funk on ten instrumentals filled with pure disco and funk breakbeats, making the album one of the highly-coveted Japanese LPs on international cratedigger scene. Remastered from the original tapes. Faithfully reproduced original artwork; Artwork by renowned illustrator Ichibun Sugimoto. New introduction by Anton Spice.
