CARTER, J. Rejoice! LP
A Sunken Mall is a new label from Vaagner, bringing limited vinyl editions in special packaging."In the railroad car a girl on her own. She looks out the window. Outside everything splits in two: tilled fields, woods, white houses, towns, suburbs, dumps, factories, dogs, and children waving goodbye. Lola Muriel appears. August 1980. I dream of faces that open their mouths and can't speak. They try but they can't. Their blue eyes stare at me but they can't. Then I walk along the corridor of a hotel. I wake up sweating. Lola has blue eyes and she reads Poe stories by the pool, while the other girls talk about pyramids and jungles. I dream that I'm watching it rain in neighborhoods which I recognize but have never visited. I walk along an empty passageway. I see faces with eyes that close and mouths that open, though they can't speak. I wake up sweating. August 1980? A girl, eighteen, from Andalusia? The night watchman, madly in love?" --Roberto Bolan?o"Dedicated to the love of the fields we watch while they comb their own hair." All instrumentation, vocals, and compositions by Jeremiah M. Carter, except the violin samples performed by Sarah Viviana Valdez on "A Pale Cloth That Cover The Eyes, written words used by Roberto Bolan?o on "Like A Waltz", and the written and spoken words by Kelby Clark on "A Few Freed Memories Layed Bare". Embossed 350g deluxe cardboard cover with hand inserted image, paper insert; includes download code; Edition of 150.

JRMMT Palimpsest LP
Palimpsest is the debut album by Copenhagen based composer JRMMT. Palimpsest is a document of time, a carrier of traces. Throughout history, ancient scrolls have been cleansed and reused so as to not let the precious parchment go to waste. But over time, the old text emerged from the crevices in the document -- as clear, indelible traces of the past. There is no such thing as a clean slate. And the old world is always breathing through the cracks of the new world. Jens Ramon Murga Meinert Thomsen (JRMMT) explores the traces that are left behind and breathes new life into distant, organic forms in the digital eternity of the present. Here is the sound of the inner chaos, the blood and the organs -- and here is the sound of the icy-blue surface that reaches as far as the eye can see. The body is breathing under the ice and the new Middle Ages are hidden within our time.

BANSHEE Living A Dream 12"
A chorus for 2020's haunted cityscapes, Banshee's first record of the decade begins by gazing skyward, pushing against the shadow within and seeking magic in the everyday. Refracted utopian visions willfully conceal the underlying gloom, but after finding temporary relief in the clouds, unfulfilled wishes, and fragile fantasies soon dissolve into nightmares and psychic terror, with recursive voices hinting at re-lived trauma creeping through inner worlds like the hand of Freddy Krueger.

SONOLOGYST Ancient Death Cults And Beliefs CD
Profound, ritual dark ambient and apocalyptic drones from Italy's Sonologyst. The veneration of the dead plays an important role in mythology and (nature) religions. It is inspired by fear for wrath of the deceased, and by obtaining their council and favors. A large part of the religious life concentrated therefore around the death cults. This led to the erection of huge monuments (mastabas, pyramids, grave-temples, and rock-graves) in Egypt... but in ancient China, Mesopotamia, and India the dead were also honored by impressive monuments and elaborate rituals. Although the death cults and burial rituals may be different among the nature religions, the reasons are the same; either affection towards the deceased or else fear for the soul wandering in the vicinity of the corpse and which must be appeased (with offerings, prayers, incantations). Common is also a form of cannibalism where the body is eaten in order to obtain some of the strength of the deceased. The mummification of the dead, which originated in the belief of life after death, was an important part of the death cults too. Ancient Death Cults And Beliefs is a deep musical investigation of those cults and beliefs in ancient times. Presented in a matte digipak. Evocative, ritualistic artwork by Abby Helasdottir.

MINOY In Search Of Tarkovsky CD
Minóy (1951-2010), a major figure in DIY noise music, produced some of the most remarkably engrossing, beautiful, and imaginative work-of-art albums released on cassette in the 1980s. Created in 1986, In Search Of Tarkovsky is dedicated to the late Russian director, Andrei Tarkovsky (Solaris (1973), Stalker (1979), Andrei Rublev (1966), etc.) A unique world of musical expression, with dense audio abstractions where the origin of any particular sound isn't quite discernible. A form of labyrinthian, droning collage electronics, otherworldly and dreamlike, at times nightmarish, at times sad, but always bold and deeply affecting. Composed after the director's death, it contains many trademarks of Minóy's style: manipulation of shortwave radio, use of spring reverb to get those strangely echoing, claustrophobic environments, and then the howling vocals, piling-up and distorting. Minóy plainly mourns the director's death but in such a unique way there is nothing to compare it to. Two long-form, elaborate pieces (just under one hour), essential to Minóy's aesthetic of "cinema of the ear". This is the first Minóy material ever to be reissued. Unavailable since the original cassette release, these tracks have been remastered from the original archive files and are presented for the first time on CD. Matte-laminate digipak.

KHOST Buried Steel CD
Buried Steel is the fourth album from Birmingham industrial metal duo Khost, following the 2017 release Governance (CSR 237CD, 2017). Themes and sonics of Buried Steel range from granite and impassive to dream-like and somnambulistic, in keeping with the promise -- and threat -- of the title, dwelling on slow, infallible ruination: a gravitational downthrust upon misshapen monuments and structures which are mangled, overgrown and increasingly forgotten. A monochrome landscape where nature reclaims and redefines us as time passes. Recording of the album was marred with events such as an electrical fire which damaged some equipment. As a result, a number of tracks on the album had to be pieced together from damaged analogue elements such as reel-to-reel (Khost reel-to-reel RIP). From this point, the dynamic of some of the songs was altered, shifting their eventual outcome, particularly the tone of ambient work on Buried Steel. Guests include Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire, Wrangler), Syan, Eugene Robinson (Oxbow), Manuel Liebeskind, Daniel Buess (16-17, MIR), and Stephen Ah Burroughs (Tunnels Of Ah, ex-Head Of David). Six-panel digipak with artwork contributions from Talitha Bell, Syan, and Craig Earp. Includes a remix by Mothboy.

WEB WEB Worshippers CD
The third Web Web album, Worshippers, is the richest and perhaps best Web Web album so far. It testifies to maturity and is the logical continuation of the two preceding albums. In a way, it is a concept album in Web Web's journey through Afro- and spiritual jazz. Worshippers: The idolizers, the admirers. Web Web adores and bows to the greats of jazz and their spiritual music. Songs like "The Upper", "Paranormal Question", or the multi-part "Free A.M." were created, all of which show more complex structures as well as sophisticated forms and arrangements than the two previous albums Oracle (COMP 499CD/LP, 2017) and Dance Of The Demons (COMP 516CD/LP, 2018). Along with the search for new sounds and soundscapes arose the desire for an extended sound body, which goes beyond Web Web's conventional repertoire: Besides, there was a musician, with whom the complex arrangements and the tight, mantric rhythms could be accomplished: the violinist and violist Stefan Pintev. The native Bulgarian, who previously played with legends like Ray Charles or Astrud Gilberto, could give the music an additional depth and a mystical color with his dark timbre on his violin. In pieces like "Mystic Flowers" or "Inner Revolution", his entire sound spectrum is brilliantly revealed, as is his narrative and multi-layered playing. In the middle of the production process of this album, the idea to let the incredible voice of Joy Denalane (Freundeskreis, Common) flow into Web Web's music was born. Since Joy Denalane and Roberto Di Gioia were working on their solo album simultaneously, Joy became amazed by the new Web Web sounds and ended up contributing to this album. On this album, Joy Denalane does not perform in the way we know from her song forms and structures. Instead she sings in a free, improvisational manner, uses her voice as an instrument, enters into a dialogue with Tony Lakato's wondrous improvisations (as in "What You Give"), or experiments with alienating (and alienated) vocal tirades in "Free A.M. (Part 1)", asserting her sensational art of improvisation -- similar to the early Dee Dee Bridgewater. On the opening song "The Upper", she impresses with her dark and soulful voice and indicates the way for the whole album from her very first line. Web Web are Roberto Di Gioia (piano, synth, percussion), Tony Lakatos (tenor and soprano saxophones, flute), Christian von Kaphengst (upright bass), and Peter Gall (drums).

MR RAOUL K & PABLO FIERRO African Paradigm EP 3 12"
Finally, Compost presents the highly sought-after Pablo Fierro remix for "Bara" by Mr Raoul K & Manoo (a Black Coffee favorite tune!) plus a dub version and a superb collabo Afro house tune by Mr Raoul K & Pablo Fierro. A package with global club torpedoes... Third 12" to go along with Mr Raoul K's African Paradigm album. If you consider the album as a listening experience with a stong focus on storytelling, the twelve inches shift your focus to the dancier side of things. To get things started, Mr Raoul K teams up with Pablo Fierro and they unleash "Ancestral". At the beginning, the dynamic duo puts its instrumental track in the back and let B'Utiza's great vocals carry the track. After grooving along with lots of percussion and their subtle yet sincere drums, Pablo and Raoul finish the track with energy and all their musical skills on full display. On the flipside, Pablo Fierro flexes his dancefloor muscle on "Bara" of African Paradigm EP II fame (CPT 557EP). Pounding drums and vocal snippets echoing back and forth pave the way for Ahmed Sosso's vocals. After some kind of call and response between vocals and the growing instrumental tracks, Pablo unleashes the track's full power around the five-minute mark and goes with flow until the very end. On the second track, Mr Raoul K and Manoo strip down "Bara" to its bare essentials. It's just the groove and a looped vocal snippet. After a quite while a little buildup with some keyboards and strings. A hypnotizing dub with every piece in position to really please the late crowd -- including a long, beatless outro...

MILLER & HIS ORCHESTRA, GLENN The Jazz Collector Edition 2CD
The latest edition in the Jazz Collector's Edition 2CD-set series presents Glenn Miller & His Orchestra, the American swing dance band formed by Glenn Miller in 1938. Arranged around a clarinet and tenor saxophone playing melody, and three other saxophones playing harmony, the band became the most popular and commercially successful dance orchestra of the swing era and one of the greatest singles charting acts of the 20th century. While he was traveling to entertain US troops in France during the second World War, Miller's aircraft disappeared in bad weather over the English Channel. Alton Glenn Miller (1904-1944) was the American big-band trombonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader in the swing era. He was the best-selling recording artist from 1939 to 1942, leading one of the best-known big bands. Miller's recordings include "In the Mood", "Moonlight Serenade", "Pennsylvania 6-5000", "Chattanooga Choo Choo", "A String of Pearls", "At Last", "(I've Got a Gal In) Kalamazoo", "American Patrol", "Tuxedo Junction", "Elmer's Tune", and "Little Brown Jug". In just four years, Glenn Miller scored 16 number-one records and 69 top ten hits -- more than Elvis Presley (38 top 10s) and the Beatles (33 top 10s) did in their careers.

STAR SEARCHERS Avatar Blue LP
Spencer Clark is back with a futuristic eco-friendly record. It's life on earth as you never heard it. The story goes like this: Spencer wanted to do a soundtrack for the yet to be made Avatar 2. And if you know Spencer's work, you'll know that he engaged on this mission reading material that influenced the rich and crazy imaginary world of Avatar. If you think about it a little bit, something like Avatar could have really come out from the mind of Spencer Clark. But it didn't. So, he dwelled around the idea of that soundtrack, working on what is now known as Avatar Blue. The record presented here is a selection Clark made from the double-CD released in 2019 on his own Pacific City Sound Visions. Like many of Spencer's other alias or incarnations, Star Searchers introduces the listener to a new world. Besides making sounds/soundtracks for alternative realities he cares about making a world for his music to live in. It's never superficial or dedicated just to the act of imagination, Spencer creates sounds that sustain the reality he imagined. That's why they're so rich and consequential in the realization of music as a medium. Avatar Blue is music but also literature. And cinema. Star Searchers' sound creates an absorbent sound about what's happening in aquatic life. It goes beyond the perception of what we've seen or what we've known, it's a neo-future aquatic life, with a world building structure and sounds and narratives that go along with it. All done with a sound-aesthetics that could be described as slowed-down-trance, that fits 1980s synth nostalgia and dreams of sci-fi to come. Vinyl cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

PERRY, LEE 'SCRATCH' Lee Scratch Perry Presents The Full Experience CD
"By the late Seventies, Lee 'Scratch' Perry was at the height of his creative powers, producing a succession of spellbinding recordings from his compact Black Ark studio in Kingston, Jamaica. Among his finest, yet most underrated work from this period were various projects involving one or more of three female singers: highly respected South African-born Aurella (Aura) Lewis, US-born vocalist Pamela Reed and a young, ambitious British performer, Candy McKenzie. Collectively known as the Full Experience, much of the trio's work for the producer remains unissued, but in 1977, a couple of 12" singles gave the record buying public a taste of their extraordinary talents: 'Disco Fits' c/w 'Breakfast In Bed' demonstrated MacKenzie's developing abilities as a solo artist, while the enthralling 'Disco Devil', on which the she, Lewis and Reed together backed the producer, revealed the range and power of the three singer's combined voices. Yet astonishingly, the remainder of the trio's work from this period failed to immediately see issue and it was not until 1988 that five recordings from an abandoned Full Experience album were finally gathered on a French mini-LP. Two decades on, Candy McKenzie's showcase LP also finally surfaced and it is the recordings from both of these collections, along with the aforementioned 'Disco Devil' that comprise this celebration of recordings by arguably Jamaica's finest ever female vocal trio Annotated by official Lee Perry biographer, David Katz and featuring four tracks new to CD, this is an essential purchase for all fans of the legendary producer, female vocals and classic roots reggae."

"Having previously showcased Clancy Eccles' output from 1969 and 1970 on Freedom & Fire Corner and Foolish Fool & Herbsman Reggae, the music-maker's influential rock steady and proto-reggae recordings provide the focus for this brand new collection. Recorded between mid-1967 and late 1968, the tracks range from major Jamaican hits to painfully rare obscurities, performed by an equally diverse assortment of performers that include virtual unknowns alongside such eminent artists as Alton Ellis, Eric 'Monty' Morris, Ernest Ranglin and Eccles's long-standing friend and associate, Lee 'Scratch' Perry. With 17 tracks unavailable on any format for decades, this fascinating compilation is a must for fans of rock steady and boss reggae, with the set superbly demonstrating the ever-developing sound of Jamaican music over a period now widely regarded as the most compelling in its history."

2SHY Night Conclusion 12"
Dom Trojga bounces into 2020 with an EP beautifully crafted by one of Warsaw's finest young talents -- 2shy. Best-known for his work as one half of the burgeoning duo Private Press (of Indigo Area & REKIDS fame), Night Conclusion is his long-awaited solo debut. Citing late '90s US house luminaries and Polish underground hip-hop as some of his main influences (WSP's deep classic "Faktem Jest" was an actual reference during mixing), 2shy combines deep sensibility, great skill, and genuine vehemence across the four tracks, telling a story that blends right into the greater narrative of house music, while adding to it its very own emotional touch. To use other words, Night Conclusion is a tender slammer, and does it good for DJs, dancers, lovers, and night-time dreamers alike. The label art is an acrylic painting by Micha? Ratajczak, whose work we admire greatly. Things have only just begun -- look out for more Dom Trojga!

PEDRO Da Linha LP
Fast-rising Lisbon-based DJ/producer Pedro has shared details of his long-awaited debut album, Da Linha, which will be released via Enchufada. First teased with the release of bubbling lead single "Calores" in January of 2019, Da Linha crowns a defining breakthrough three years for Pedro that has seen him establish himself as one of Portugal's most vibrant and exciting new-school producers. His debut EP, Damaia (2017) -- named after the suburb of Lisbon he was born in -- immediately signposted a bright, borderless club sound rooted in experimentation, which has since been best emphasized by 2019 releases including the Buraka Som Sistema-sampling "Rapazes" and a breathless collaboration with Nigerian MC, Magugu ("Too Much"), both of which feature on the LP track list. First inspired by his older brother, who would introduce Pedro to the latest electronic music coming out of Portugal, he still references DJ Rolando's "Knights Of Jaguar" as a memorable early touch point -- a record he still credits with influencing the melodies he writes to this day. Living and growing up in Damaia, Pedro also went to school with friends of Angolan, Cape Verdean, Brazilian, and Mozambican descent, exposing him to a whole patchwork of new sounds and genres like kuduro and kizomba from a very young age. With such a rich and diverse musical upbringing, it is perhaps no wonder that Da Linha is bursting with energy and color across all ten tracks, melding together the hyper-specific sounds, instruments, and voices that have sound-tracked Pedro's life so far. From the marching, militant rhythm of "Stuck On You" featuring standout Ghanaian MC, Bryte, to the silky, bubblegum vocals and gloopy, earworm melodies of closing track "Para Ti" featuring Xcelencia, you'd be hard pushed to find a debut record that captures a city so viscerally. Also features Kelman Duran, Pedro Mafama, Branko, and DKVPZ.

RICHAID, RICARDO Travesseiro Feliz CD
On his debut album Travesseiro Feliz (Happy Pillow), Rio de Janeiro based artist Ricardo Richaid melds his tropical heritage with his love for psychedelic music, jazz, and rock. He also takes inspiration from the many Brazilian greats -- Caetano Veloso, Arthur Verocai, Ivan Lins, Joyce, Hermeto Pascoal, Marcos Valle, and Azymuth (to name a few) -- who he has worked with as an engineer, assistant, and producer, in Rio's former RCA studio, Cia dos Tecnicos. Heavily influenced by Brazil's fabled Tropicalia movement, Richaid is also the grandson of Brazilian actor, singer, and Disney star Aurora Miranda (Carmen Miranda's younger sister). Describing his sound as "Industrial Tropicalism", Richaid's music is undoubtedly a product of his environment: warm, hazy and beautiful, but reflective of the current mood of his homeland, lamenting the political, economic, and ecological crisis. The unconventional time signatures and sunny jazz-folk meets post-punk aesthetic are adorned by Richaid's studio smarts. Travisseiro Feliz features notable names from across Rio's music spectrum, including percussion sensation Marcos Suzano (Gilberto Gil), experimental pop artist Ana Frango Eletrico, and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Jose Ibarra (Milton Nascimento's touring group). On interlude track "Formigas" you also hear a few verses of Ricardo singing with his seven-year-old daughter, Nina. Carrying forward the Tropicália torch, the opener "Maracas Enterprise/Frio da manhã" is a two-part journey through Richaid's sonic approach, weaving together interlocking horns, chorus drenched guitar, and fuzzed-up synth stabs. A perfect example of Richaid's industrial tropicalism, "Largado Nu" mixes soft, acoustic guitar, and flutes with harder-edged synths and electric guitars, while "O Velho Cai" is beautiful jazz-infused folk, with fretless bass and saxophone singing around the vocal harmonies of Richaid and Liza Machado. Living with his grandmother Aurora Miranda until the age of seventeen (featured in Walt Disney's Three Caballeros film, and happens to be the first human being to kiss Donald Duck), Ricardo would listen to his father playing chromatic scales and bossa nova melodies on the saxophone; his mother's Brazilian classical piano; or his punk rock brother slamming the drums. This eclectic musical upbringing led a teenage Ricardo to learning his trade as the bassist in a short-lived hard rock band, which disbanded when Ricardo began to dig deeper. Alongside engineering some of his musical heroes in Brazil, Richaid has played in bands like Mara Rúbia and nitú, from Rio's underground experimental psych and jazz scenes.

SLOWEST LIFT, THE Plutonic Shine LP
"Vinylization of last year's cassette by UK duo, The Slowest Lift. Comprised of Julian Bradley (Vibracathedral Orchestra, etc.) and Sophie Cooper (whose Divine Ekstasys LP, (FTR 342LP, 2018) is a dang classic), The Slowest Lift has been producing high-quality avant-pop form-waffling for several years. Their eponymous debut album was on VHF (2017), and Plutonic Shine continues their drive into the heart of some very weird beast. Sophie's vocals sometimes breath like the air itself, although they can also surface as distorted puffs of lung-powered color, melodically-oriented, but trapped by no ordinary sense of song structure. The instrumental portion seems to be built with electronics and guitars, which create mounds of sound for the vocals to hide behind and dodge around. Although the sound is as 'now' as any hep cat could wish. there is really very little to date this music archeologically. The basic tools for what The Slowest Lift do have been around for decades. It is what Julian and Sophie choose to do with these tools that will knock that beaver hat right off your head. Gorgeous stuff." --Byron Coley, 2020 Edition of 250.

DIETRICH, DON Option LP
"FTR is proud to present what is only the second solo album by Borbetomagus' sax giant, Don Dietrich. Crazily, Option documents the FIRST solo performance Don ever did. It was recorded in 2019 as part of the OPTION series in Chicago, where Dietrich appeared at the invitation of Ken Vandermark (who also wrote the liner notes). The cover photo shows one of Don's polycarbonate sculptures, after which the album is partially named. Twisted, compressed, and strangely inviting, it is emblematic of the eruptive ruckus Don creates using amplified tenor sax and effects pedals. This music possesses some of the same cerebral overload as the sounds Dietrich invents inside his long-lived trio. But without the specters of Jim Sauter's sax and Donald Miller's guitar, the sonic envelope here feels somehow less hermetic. There are no sneak attacks from his brothers about to happen. The shape of the solo improvisations here are under his control. The pedals allow Don to make all sorts of un-sax-like textural moves. A few spots bubble down into solo electronics that would not be out of place on a Basil Kirchin LP. But most of Option has a crazy flow, constantly bending and folding back on itself, in order to make the sound richer and darker. Like a black hole star, Don sometimes seems to be pulling raw sounds out of the air towards himself. It's a totally wild process, and something we hope you will enjoy, before you file this title as a JAZZ record. Which Don says is where it belongs. And who are we -- really -- to argue?" --Byron Coley, 2020 Edition of 300.

FLATMATES, THE The Flatmates LP
"Bristol UK's the Flatmates were only around for three years (1986-1989) releasing a handful of songs with a few of them being UK radio hits before disbanding. The band reformed with a new vocalist in 2013 and are now finally releasing a debut LP nearly 30 years after splitting up. Considered one of the bands that created the fuzzed-out guitar indie pop band formula along with the Wedding Present."

BJORK, BRANT Brant Bjork CD
"Even before you know it's self-titled, and even before you read the LP liner notes, you know it's all Brant Bjork. The man who has become the ambassador of Californian desert rock indeed plays every instrument across his 13th studio full-length, Brant Bjork. This in itself is something of a departure from recent offerings, as on 2018's Mankind Woman (HPS 083CD/G-LP/LTD-LP), Bjork worked closely with guitarist Bubba DuPree (Void), and both 2016's Tao of the Devil and 2014's Black Power Flower were constructed around the Bjork-led Low Desert Punk Band. Maybe revisiting his 1999 debut, Jalamanta, for a Heavy Psych Sounds 20th anniversary reissue in 2019 (HPS 107CD/LP/LTD-LP) had some effect on Bjork's mindset in terms of working solo, but he's come too far in the ensuing decades to repeat himself, and the songs on Brant Bjork -- recorded and mixed by Yosef Sanborn in Joshua Tree and mixed by John McBain (ex-Monster Magnet) -- show that, whether it's the mellow roll of 'Duke of Dynamite' or the signature take on classic heavy rock in 'Jesus Was a Bluesman' and percussion-backed funk of opener 'Jungle in the Sound'. There's no mistaking Brant Bjork, and on Brant Bjork, he strips his songwriting style to its core and brings out the organic vibe that's made him desert rock's most crucial practitioner. His legacy and pedigree are unmatched, with tenures in Kyuss/Vista Chino and Fu Manchu as well as the sadly short-lived Ché, Ten East, and others, but it is Brant Bjork's solo work that has had his greatest impact and shown him to be of inimitable character in craft and style. His unrelenting creativity and one-of-a-kind voice are writ large over the Brant Bjork album, which is precisely how it should be, and after more than two decades of exploring out in the sands, Bjork continues to find new ways to manifest not just the landscape of the desert, but the spirit of his relationship to it. In short, he is a master, and this is the record that bears his name. You miss it at your own peril." --JJ Koczan

ZEKEULTRA (The Power Of) The Will Of Man LP
Emerging from that place where hip-hop slurs into ambience and where rap is just a hypnogogic mumble, is Delaware (US) based MC/producer ZekeUltra, who excels in warped and worn beats and woozy, near ambient textures, over which he declaims his truth. Ultra's intelligent, introspective rhymes are at turns heartbroken and confessional, anomic and brooding, sometimes resigned, at other times optimistic, with a healthy dose of humor to prevent the narrative from traversing too dark a path. The delivery is muddied and beneath the surface, drawling in-and-out of view and shy of any thug braggadocio. Production duties on all but three tracks are handled by prodigiously talented Idaho (US) resident Yonqi, whose beautiful, hauntological loops and understated beats give the album a smoky, downtempo feel throughout. A gorgeous swirl of hazy, jazz-tinged electronica in miniature. This is a record to climb into and explore. To absorb its genre-blurring grooves, where half-speed, deep soul samples meet haunting, electronic textures, underpinned with cavernous subby bass and sparsely abstract beat constructions. It's where Leyland Kirby meets Earl Sweatshirt, or the Jazzy Sport crew bump up against Ghost Box, all dug from the crates and knowingly vintage. A record of twilit soul splinters, fuzzy jazz cuts, and enigmatic, stoned incantations. Effortlessly beautiful music for fans of the downbeat. INDEX Kainos LP
Simon Scott (Slowdive) debuts his Index alias with a visceral new sound that absorbs and transmutes political, ecological, and psychic dread into a caustic, dissonant style of noise sculpture for iDEAL Recordings. Recorded 2016-2019 in Los Angeles, Kainos sees veteran UK composer, field recordist, drummer, and mastering engineer Scott explore ongoing concerns of his oeuvre via a prism of formative musical influences from the post-industrial music of Coil, Throbbing Gristle, and early Black Sabbath, plus non-musical and conceptual inspiration from the turmoil of Brexit -- including recordings of the Houses of Parliament -- through to the radical feminist scientific writing of Donna Haraway, and the conceptual vigor of Luigi Russolo's Futurist manifesto, The Art of Noises. The album's title Kainos, from the ancient Greek meaning "new" or "fresh", characterizes Scott's efforts to glean something practical from this world's current state of chaos. When taken in context of its use in Donna Haraway's 2016 book, Staying with the Trouble: Making kin in the Chthulucene, and its central tenet that "our task is to make trouble, to stir up potent response to devastating events on a damaged earth", Scott's enacts a tectonic shift from bucolic sonic signifiers to signposts of the post-industrial world that could hardly be more apt at a time when electronic and ambient music are prized for their safe and sterile wallpaper qualities, rather than a potential to evoke and invoke more powerful feelings. Based around modular synth-mangled live stream recordings of the Houses of Parliament during the prelude to Brexit, Scott's compositions take these fractious debates as building blocks for the album's caustic improvisations and compositions, ranging from convulsive clangor to pulsating tracts of strobing distortion and gutted, lurching post-dubstep rhythms riddled with the voice of Slowdive's Rachel Goswell, before eventually resolving with a more spacious, textured sense of relief by the album's close. His results are chaotic and noisily abrasive in a way that holds up a mirror to the modern world, reflecting a putative state of unrest and agitation. In concept, this is nothing new for Scott, as previous release have variously explored ideas of climate change in Below Sea Level (2012) and FloodLines (2016, TONE 053CD), but the product this time is far more pointed, even aggressive, in its noisy insistence. DOCKSTADER, TOD Aerial 1 2LP
Tod Dockstader's Aerial series, an electronic/drone masterpiece, is cherished among fans of the artist's work. 15 years in the making, the Aerial series is sourced from his life-long passion for shortwave radio. Dockstader collected over 90 hours of recordings, made at night, and comprised of cross signals and fragments plucked from the atmosphere. Opening with airwave drones, Dockstader gradually allows elements to slowly come and go, summoning an ominous atmosphere of ethereal clouds. Malignant placidity continues, giving the feeling of eavesdropping upon late-night audio activity not unlike discovering number stations while sweeping the dials. Backward voices, deep echoing choruses of conversations flowing under the surface, ocean sounds, pulsing electro-rhythms, all seem to be created via the collaging of many hours of source recordings. A masterwork of collage and juxtaposition by an overlooked pioneer of American electronic music. Artwork by John Brien. Audiophile quality double-LP; edition of 500.Dockstader on the Aerial project (September 14, 2003): "I've written before of my interest in shortwave radio, in the notes to the Quatermass CD (SR 233CD). Also, in the notes to the Omniphony CD (which has my first 'Aerial' mix, 'Past Prelude,' in it), I mentioned 'The Aerial Etudes,' which was my working title for what became the three CDs you have. And, at the end of an interview with Chris Cutler (which can be found in the 'Unofficial TD Website'), the piece I mentioned I was starting to work on at the time became Aerial). When I was very young, people got most of their entertainment from radio. They called it 'playing the radio,' as if it were a musical instrument. That's what I've tried to do in this piece. About this time, a few people encouraged me to look into using a computer for this work. I'd never used one, but I saw it would allow me to keep my mixes digital -- no more transfer losses. So, at the end of 2001, I got a computer and an editing program for it, and spent what seemed a long time learning it. I began selecting mixes and loading them into the computer in late March, 2002. Out of the 580, I selected 90 'best' mixes -- eventually reduced to 59, the ones on the CDs. Finally, in assembling the CDs, I followed David Myers' suggestion to allow each piece to flow into the next -- making a continuous journey to the end."

VA Born To Love You: Jamaican Love Songs CD
Jamaican love songs always came across as heartfelt poetry whether they conveyed a broken heart, unrequited love or even the message "it's all over don't bother to come back" anecdotes. But whatever the mood the singers of these songs were so good and versatile that putting such subject matter over in a few verses was always so moving and believable. Jamaican love songs were a constant in the ever-evolving sounds and journey that reggae music took its listeners on, from ska to rocksteady to the early reggae sounds of the late 1960s early 1970s. Kingston Sounds have complied a great selection of songs that all deal with that timeless subject matter. Max Romeo's heartfelt "Sometimes" opens our set in fine style, known more for his roots singing this song proves what a great singer he is. The Melodians a great Jamaican vocal group are featured here with "Best Girl". The Sensations provide the title track, "Born To Love You", and the theme for this compilation, a great rocksteady tune with fantastic harmonies. Alton Ellis gives the compilation the soulful "Room Full Of Tears". Ken Boothe rendition of Dennis Brown's "Money In My Pocket" is here, an ode that money cannot buy you everything. Cornell Campbell sings one of his most overlooked classic songs with his prideful "She Wears My Ring". The great singer of love songs himself, Mr. John Holt, tells his listeners that they should all "Reconsider" before giving up on love, and a great lost singer Monty Morris gives two great examples of how to find love in "Do It My Way" and "Magic Moments". A great selection delivered as only Jamaica can do with style and feeling. Also features Keith Blake, Danvan Carlos, and Johnny Clarke. CD version includes four bonus tracks from Monty Morris, The Melodians, Derrick Morgan & Hortense Ellis, and Ken Boothe.

HOOGLAND, ZEA & OSCAR JAN Summing CD
"Oscar Jan Hoogland is the sound of Amsterdam in person. He plays in the Muziekgebouw (Amsterdams main hall for modern composed music) as well as in the Bimhuis (Holland's main jazz venue) that is literally attached to it, as in its parking garage. He is an instant composer, pianist and inventor of his own instrument. As the last student of the late pianist, composer and improvisor Misha Mengelberg he tears like a tornado through the Amsterdam jazz and impro scene, plays with legends like Han Bennink, organizes concerts, ad hoc theatre and performances in all holes and corners of Amsterdam. Arnold de Boer moved in the early nineties from the Frisian village called Makkum to Amsterdam to study and to be able to see a concert every night. At the local drumband and harmony orchestra Hallelujah Makkum he learned to play drums and trumpet, but once in Amsterdam he switched to guitar and started his own band Zea. The headstrong mix of jumpy indie rock, beat punk, sample pop, noise and lo-fi dub got picked up far outside the lowlands and since the release of Zea's debut album Kowtow To An Idiot Zea tours all over the world. Arnold sings in Dutch experimental/punk band The Ex and gets highly involved in organizing concert nights and festivals in Amsterdam including a monthly night at the Paradiso, called K-tsjoem, and many nights at local DIY venue OCCII, where he becomes very active and part of the collective. For the K-tsjoem night at the Paradiso Arnold invites Oscar Jan to come and play with his new band. It's the beginning of a series of invitations back and forth, between indie and impro, that still continues and that resulted in recording the album by Zea + Oscar Jan Hoogland, called Summing. A hypnotic groove under a playful song next to an arabic melody on an improvised sound collage; the music is built with independent parts, all recorded in one take. The songs are percussive and move on the polyrhythms of two parallel switched turbines."

Algara's first communiqué vomits in the face of moderate leftism; encouraging class war and insurrection, and wanting the total annihilation of police forces. Home recorded in a Barcelona Squat, the production of their debut four-track EP is minimal. Algara deal in stark and sparse sounding post-punk that hints at Crisis, early Decima Victima and Joy Division in equal measures. The lead guitar is brittle and skeletal, and sits perfectly on the driving rhythm section, made up of a primitive drum machine, creating a sonic background for their message to be heard. Algara has expanded into a four-member band since this recording and is currently performing live while working on an upcoming LP.

RAINE, LENA Oneknowing CD
Oneknowing is the debut artist album by acclaimed composer and producer Lena Raine, most recently known for her multiple award-winning soundtrack for the video game Celeste. Based in Seattle, Raine has been composing soundtracks for games and media for 12 years, her breakout moment coming with her work on the classic PC game Guild Wars 2. Her most celebrated work, however, has come in the form of 2018's Celeste soundtrack. A game based around themes of anxiety, self-examination and more, Celeste is considered by many to be the key indie game of 2018, and has won multiple awards for both game and soundtrack -- something which Raine painstakingly developed in tandem with the game's design team since its origins. A flagship year for Raine was capped off in December, where she performed live with soundtrack legend Hans Zimmer at The Game Awards, the video game industry's flagship annual award show (Celeste was nominated for four awards, and won two). Although she's released several non-soundtrack releases, both under her real name and her Kuraine alias, Raine considers Oneknowing her debut artist album -- a ten track set that ranges from distorted paranoia to ambient pop, brought together by the shimmering melodies that make her soundtracks so memorable. An album that draws from "personal experiences, important places, dreams and the lack of dreams," Oneknowing's tracks are also threaded together by Raine's own vocals, sung in a language unique to the album and manipulated by the software Vocaloid. In Raine's words, "I have nostalgia for my voice as it sounded when I was younger. I can't de-age my voice, but I was able to use software and tweak its settings to a point that it has a similar quality to my voice from back then". At times ("Tsukuyomi," "Light Rail") her vocals lean towards traditional pop structures, while on tracks such as "Wake Up," they're repeated, chant-like, to create a hypnotic effect. As well as vocals and software, Raine plays Rhodes piano, zither, and various hardware synthesizers on Oneknowing, while Michaela Nachtigall contributes violin and viola to various tracks. A succinct but expansive record full of detail, Oneknowing represents Raine's most personal and realized original material yet, while showing a different side to one of the most unique and accomplished composers of the modern era.

NICOLAI, BRUNO Espressioni LP
Originally released in 1972 for the sought after Gemelli imprint, Espressioni was credited to longtime Ennio Morricone partner and conspirator Bruno Nicolai, one of the most influential Italian composers in the heyday of film music and modern composition. The maestro Morricone shows his persona between the folds of the record as well, revealing a common sense for obscure leanings in the tradition of avant-garde jazz and classic contemporary. The many faces of the two composers are fully in charge through the nine episodes of the release, such a chronological history akin to the common area of Italian psycho drama and cultish noir-exploitation short movies. Fascinating though obscure, these austere compositions should be fitting ideally alongside your Gruppo D' Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza or Egisto Macchi releases.180 gram vinyl; obi; edition of 400.Loneos translates to passion for music, discovering is the main goal here. Spanning psych, folk, blues, and pop, with a range of trippy effects, it was produced by the great Gus Dudgeon (David Bowie, Elton John) and is one of the best-loved British underground recordings of its time. It makes its long-overdue return to vinyl here, together with an insert containing notes and rare images. "Maybe My Mind" features Egg.

UNKNOWN Marilyn 12"
Mysterious Berlin label MASK return with a pair of raw cuts entitled Marilyn. MASK preserve their esoteric philosophy of delivering well-crafted, modulated house and techno cuts produced on hardware equipment and Marilyn certainly follows suit. MASK releases are the result of anonymous artists live-jamming together in unison with the first five releases picking up support from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Marcel Dettmann, Elena Colombi, Machine Woman, and many more. The A side is 13-minute voyage featuring fluttering, resonant drums, lo-fi synth stabs, and growling oscillations that become the focus in the track's latter stages while on the B side sweeping pads, spacey undertones, and squelchy, acid-soaked sci-fi elements keep the sonic experience obscure yet fascinating throughout.

ROBSON, NICK Stars 12"
In 1981, Nick Robson wrote "Stars". The song can pretty much be described as a slow, cosmic disco song. It has an unusual feel, and it comes as Oslo-based Neppås third release. This 12" holds the 12" mix, the 7" mix, and the original B-side, "Eye To Eye". The original 12" is as rare as they come, and here you get the original material, fully licensed, and remastered. The process of recording the material back in 1981 was not an easy one, as Nick Robson recalls: "'Fame' by David Bowie is one of my favorite songs, period. I was 18 when, I wrote 'Stars' and I wanted to write something that was my version of 'Fame' and quite honestly, as a tribute to the song. If you listen to the bass lines, there is a hint of similarity in the two. Even the lyric of 'Stars' has a passing reference to 'Fame'. 'Stars' was one of four songs recorded at Gary's Rock City studio to supply the first two singles and form the basis of the first album. The other three tracks were 'Eye To Eye', 'Boys' and 'She's Like Ice'. Although all four tracks were finished, for one reason or another, 'Boys' never made it to pressing and I walked away from the business to pursue a career in film. 'Stars' itself, was the most arduous and problematic track that I've ever recorded. It took around 14 days to finally get an agreed mix when the budget probably only ran to three days. Part of the reason for this is the enormous quantity of music tracks recorded in the song. In those days, we only had 24 recordable tracks available on the Otari, so once you had recorded 23 or less actually, you had to bounce down sub-mixes to a single track to free up another batch of tracks. I think that there are around 46 tracks of instruments alone on 'Stars' so although that kind of track usage is not uncommon now, back then it was rare. It remains the single most expensive song I ever recorded. The B-side 'Eye To Eye', on the other hand, was written, recorded and mixed in one day." Third release for Neppå, Oslo-based label focusing on lost and overseen recordings.

Throughout the years, Marcin Cichy and Igor Pud?o have been blending local, traditional jazz inspirations with means of new electronica. This original and now signature approach initially sparked the interest of Ninja Tune, for whom Skalpel recorded two enthusiastically received albums: Skalpel (2004) and Konfusion (2005). Both albums brought them particular acclaim in the form of a Gilles Peterson Worldwide Award nomination and excellent reviews in NME, The Wire, and DJ Mag, along with a worldwide tour. Transit (2014), Skalpel's third album marked a significant shift in their creative technique, a shift from samples to virtual instruments. From an emerging duo to major acclaim the pair's new album Highlight, sees Skalpel take another turn, delivering their most comprehensive body of work to date. Finding a range of influences from the likes of Miles Davis, leftfield avant-garde, minimal, and the extensive legacy of both Warp and Ninja Tune as always, Skalpel allude to roots in Polish jazz and trip hop. However, within their creative process Skalpel's focus remains centered with a contemporary sound coupled with their own autonomy and originality. The forthcoming album Highlight is a further extension of this method, existing as a demonstration of joyful, creative explosion and constituting their most rhythmically diverse and harmonically enhanced body of work to date.

METAL PREYERS Metal Preyers LP
As Metal Preyers, London's Jesse Hackett and Chicago-based Mariano Chavez distill a sozzled, bleary impression of their time spent with Lord Tusk and a crack squad of Ugandan musicians in Kampala, 2019 for the indomitable Nyege Nyege Tapes. Documenting the result of six weeks of making music, art, and videos, and Waragi Gin-fueled rides into Kampala's nightlife, Metal Preyers takes form as an industrial/ambient film soundtrack for Chavez and Hackett's visual art produced under the Teeth Agency moniker. Joined by a full battery of traditional percussion and strings, plus the canny use of whistling and Lord Tusk's rude sound system sensibilities, the Afro-Anglo-Americano ensemble serve a triple AAA-rated trip that lures listeners into their intoxicated/intoxicating state of mind and effectively connotes the experience of a jag deep into the belly of Uganda's thrilling, sprawling capital city at a crossroads of East and Central Africa. It's not the first time Jesse Hackett has worked with Ugandan musicians -- his 2017 album Ennanga Vision (SNDW 105CD/LP) saw him teamed with electro-acholi stars Otim Alpha, Geoffrey Opiyo Twongweno, and Albert Bisaso Ssempeke - however the vibe this time is more psychedelic in a road-level, grimy and noisy style thanks to the expanded plate of inputs, including an all-star Ugandan roll call of Otim Alpha, multi-instrumentalist Lawrence Okello, percussionist Omutaba, and Rian Treanor-collaborator Ocen, all girded by the vital ruggedness of London underground don, Lord Tusk. In their pair of "Dream Sequence" suites the album freewheels with delirious style, from mechanically musical drones in the title track to a quietly febrile conclusion recalling Craig Leon's Nommos (2013). Bouts of melodically stressed noise give way to gin-steeped sing-song, chunks of chopped-&-screwed gristle, and dizzy clusters of Singeli-esque rhythm in a stop/start, unpredictable manner that frankly hasn't been done on record quite like this before. DJs will find ways of working this material into sets, although the album is really best swallowed in one for an intense, soundtrack-like experience that recalls the drunken rowdiness of films like "Wake In Fright" or a febrile Safdie Brothers flick set in Uganda, and speaks directly to the thrill of Kampala's atmosphere at night. RIYL: The Wild Bunch, Craig Leon, King Midas Sound, Talking Heads. Mastered and cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 300.

TRIPLE NEGATIVE God bless the Death Drive LP
Literally taking off where the acclaimed Precious Waste in our Wake LP (PP 041LP, 2019) finished off, London based outfit Triple Negative return with another exemplary amplified jigsaw puzzle. The playback of this reality is garnished with humor, bedlam, beauty, and a robust fear of the predictable. As payback for your acknowledgment our international line-up delivers a disparate mix of genres and histographies rendered into a devious dish of rhythm, song, balladry, and nerve. This is Not This Heat. A.Kostis/Kostas Bezos's "Stin Ypoga" (1930) is the template for "Bad Emotional Investments" whilst the haunting "Fine Cargo Lacquer" takes flight from the morbidly on point novel The Death Ship by B. Traven (1926). God Bless the Death Drive could be construed as a compass to navigate the wayward wonder we inhabit or it can just be enjoyed. This second full-length steers into scathed realms of everyday junk and poignant punk, all pressed down on the lowest quality ethylene and chlorine. Triple Negative return with another stamped digest of hope as joke, noise and song, rollicking rhythm and seasick soul. High gloss sleeve with printed comic book inner sleeve; Edition of 500.

NOISE BIRDS, THE The Dark Sea Hides a Bright Light LP
Riot Season welcome The Noise Birds, aka Suishou No Fune (Japan) and Numinous Eye (USA), into the fold. Back in 2007, the Tokyo-based duo known as Suishou No Fune visited San Francisco, and during their stay participated in a recording session with old friends Mason Jones and Mike Shoun, who were operating under the name Numinous Eye. That session was released in a very small edition several years later by the Essence Music label from Brazil as Black Flowers Of The Forest In The Cosmos. When Suishou No Fune were planning their latest trip to San Francisco in May of 2018, as part of filming for a documentary, plans were made for a follow-up recording. The quartet crammed themselves into a small rehearsal space, along with two guests who filmed the proceedings, and spent the afternoon creating dark, heavy psychedelic atmospheres. Pirako and Kageo, on high-end and low-end guitar respectively, have an uncanny way of melding inner-space psychedelic drone with free-form guitar lines and spiritual sonic flow. Suishou No Fune has been a key part of Japan's scene for two decades now, playing as a duo as well as in extended format with drums and bass. San Francisco's Numinous Eye, started by guitarist Mason Jones after parting ways with his previous band SubArachnoid Space, has released a string of albums bridging noise-drone with psychedelic rock. Prime collaborator Mike Shoun, on drums and synthesizers, has also played with Thee Oh Sees, Peacers, and many others. Noise Birds, as a trio of guitars driven by drums, demonstrates a cohesive vision and melding of minds as the layers of sound shift around each other. Improvised together on the spot, these songs ebb-and-flow as the players communicate without words, focused on working together with the goal of taking the music as far in, and out, as possible. This is music as speech, as collaboration, as friends coming together across an ocean to express themselves as one, presented here for everyone else to hear and enjoy. The Noise Birds are: Pirako (guitar), Kageo (guitar), Mason Jones (guitar), Mike Shoun (drums). RIYL: Bardo Pond, Kousokuya, Fushitsusha, Carlton Melton, Les Rallizes Denudes. VA Return Of The Tokoloshe Men: Demented Sounds from the 60s Teen Scenes of Jo'Burg, Cape Town, Durban and Beyond! 6CD BOX
Isolated and shunned by the western world, South Africa's rock music scene was buried under the ugly weight of politics and the brutality of the Apartheid system in place at the time. Nearly 60 years later, in a country still struggling to find its identity, we can look back and examine the small, but flourishing music scene of South Africa. Operating under the harsh iron grip of the regime, young groups emerged, driven by the sounds of rock n' roll and freedom. Back in 1971, Clive Calder, one of rock's premier custodians, reflected on his journey to success through the 1960s: "A handful of bands produced highly creative music and young South Africa welcomed them with open arms. Gullible powers retaliated by banning or restricting their artistic influence and radio stations ignored them!" Return Of The Tokoloshe Men smashes preconceptions and breaks through the shackles of political divide and hypocrisy. Featuring over 150 ultra-rare, original recordings from 1964-1972 with detailed liners that reveal the behind the scenes stories with a plethora of original memorabilia, Return Of The Tokoloshe Men is a precious insight into another world, still unknown to many. Includes full-color, 88-page, perfect-bound booklet with detailed group biographies and rare images.Features Them, The A-Cads, The Upsetters, Bill Kimber & The Couriers, The Invaders, John E. ZOUNDS Can't Cheat Karma LP
The second release on Sealed Records is Can't Cheat Karma, a 13-track round-up of the first five singles by Zounds. Their debut single from 1980, Can't Cheat Karma was released on Crass Records and 39 years later still stands as one of the finest singles both politically and musically. For the next three singles, Zounds worked with Rough Trade Records, who also released their debut album The Curse of Zounds (1981). 1981's Demystification was a tense and stark masterpiece; it was followed by the haunting Mikey Dread-produced Dancing and then the more straight-up pop of More Trouble Coming Everyday (both 1982). The final single here is La Vache Qui Rit, released on Belgian label Not So Brave in 1983. It was originally supposed to be a split single with The Mob but ended up being two scratchy studio tracks and two rough and raw live tracks recorded in Holland in 1982. Every home should have these essential Zounds recordings.

BEC Lost In Change 12"
Born in Brighton, bred in London, and now moving between Berlin and Ibiza, BEC has an omnivorous approach to electronic music that shows up in her productions; techno with a twist. Her seventh outing on home label Second State continues in this vein as she balances hypnotic, driving elements with atypical flourishes. "Lost In Change", which gives the EP its name, layers a pounding kick with a bloodless, repeated vocal before a juddering synth launches the track into another gear. "Flux" pairs a springy bass line with siren FX to pleasantly weird effect, followed by the more intense "State Of Flow", a euphoric collision of rave-y synths and gurgling acid lines. "Holocene", meanwhile, hinges on an impatient groove textured with whipping 808s. It conjures the delicious abandon of parking your worries at the door as you give in to the primal pleasures of the dancefloor. BEC has been an international touring DJ for the past five years, playing everywhere from Berlin's Watergate to Australia's Rainbow Serpent Festival and from London's Egg to Nevada's Burning Man Festival. Lost In Change is sure to advance the ascent of one of Techno's most promising young stars.

GARONI, ROCKO Ammoniak 12"
Rocko Garoni knows what a techno dancefloor wants. He's learned it through countless hours spent on the floor himself as a punter, and through DJing at some of the best clubs and festivals in his hometown Berlin and all over the world. He knows exactly the type of productions that thrill crowds, and he brings this wealth of knowledge and experience to his third EP for Second State, Ammoniak. The title and first track "Ammoniak" drags you straight into the zone; a pounding, take no prisoners cut laced with stormy synths creating a vague sense of paranoia. "Gece" cranks the energy up with trancey, bouncing synths and a cool, clipped female vocal. Instantly, you're pulled into the very sort of club that Garoni knows so well. "No Border" is the kind of expansive track that seems destined for huge warehouses or vast festival dancefloors. There's an insistent, brooding bassline, robotic repeated vocals and a mid-track shift in tone that will send the crowd to a heightened state of reverie. The blend of post-punk vocals and eerie beats on "It's All Yours", a track featuring Cook Strummer on the vocals, is at once highly unusual and completely compelling. It's the track to play when the crowd are losing themselves in the best possible way. Closing the EP is "Helio", another completely different track that showcases the extent of Garoni's range. Faint, echoed chanting lends the track an almost holy atmosphere. Combined with tunnelling synths and spindly percussion FX, the effect is euphoric, acting as a delicious palate cleanser between heavier tracks. Put simply, Ammoniak is another first-class EP from a dynamic act who's fast becoming a Second State star.

FEAR RATIO, THE They Can't Be Saved 2LP
Double LP version, edition of 500 on 180 gram vinyl. James Ruskin and Mark Broom are The Fear Ratio. The duo, who are long-term collaborators, have created their own signature style with abstract synths, heavy basslines and experimental soundscapes that fit somewhere in between IDM, electronica and ambient. Their acclaimed debut album Lightbox was initially released in 2011 on Ruskin's Blueprint Records, featuring remixes from Warp aficionados Plaid and Deadhand. Soon after they formed a long-lasting relationship with cult Manchester based label Skam, with the follow-up album, Refuge Of A Twisted Soul (SKALD 031CD/LP, 2015). 2018 saw a four track Live EP of exclusive versions of their Autechre supporting slot at the Great Northern Warehouse in Manchester. Several years and various solo productions later, The Fear Ratio return with They Can't Be Saved, an album that solidifies their reputation as experimental producers. From the ethereal opening bars of "Sender" slowly twisting into a brooding dub breakbeat, to the staccato, bugged-out atmospherics of "Grey Code," the ghostly electronics of "Small World", to the tripped-out, schizophrenic, haunting bass of "Game Plan," and the sun-dappled keys of "The Final Vision," Broom and Ruskin flex their techno muscles ever further beyond the floor.

RAUDIVE, KONSTANTIN The Voices of the Dead LP
For many, the first traces of the Raudive Tapes were in William Burroughs's fictions and articles. The fact is, these mysterious magnetic tapes, which capture the voices of the dead, and were recorded by the Baltic scientist Konstantin Raudive, are not a fiction but a reality (in this case, not judging their scientific objectivity). These tapes, as rare as H.P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon, are now in Sub Rosa's archives. What you'll find in this record: 1. Two introductions by Konstantin Raudive and a large session of examples from his archives (July 1965); 2. Nine extracts from the Gerhard Stempnik experiments -- a musician of the Berlin Philharmonic and close friend of Raudive (tapes from 1980); 3. A Raudive celebration including unpublished material by Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky/That Subliminal Kid, David Toop, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Calla, and Carl Michael von Hausswolff. They have all composed an exclusive piece of music based on the Raudive material. It goes from a close examination of the material itself to a more evocative mood.Who was Doctor Raudive?: Dr. Konstantin Raudive, a student of Carl Jung, was a Latvian psychologist who taught at the University of Uppsala, Sweden, before devoting the last ten years of his life to electronic voice phenomenon (EVP). He published in his book Breakthrough in 1971. His early collaborator F. Jurgenson, whom he met by the very beginning of 1965, awakened Dr. K. Raudive's interest in EVP research. Raudive spent endless hours for the thorough study of Jurgenson's books (Voices from Space, 1964 and Radio-Link with the Dead, 1967). From an overwhelming database (ranging about 72000 samples!), Raudive's mother seems to be statistically the most frequently reported contact personality. She usually addressed her son in the Latgalian dialect. Includes color insert.

OXOSSI Sama EP 12"
For the first release of the new decade Subaltern Records introduce LA-based Oxóssi who has conjured a captivatingly sinister sonic palette for his debut EP on the label. A scorching 8-bar intro catapults you straight into "Sama", the first track of the release, where abandoned-jungle-ruins atmospheres meet threatening wooden flutes and weighty wobs -- Oxóssi is not messing about. The narration proceeds with a melody sung by a penetrating laser-beam-like synth, which adds a space layer to this organic banger, getting more and more detuned throughout the track while kickstarting a call-and-answer march between the flute and synth-wob melodies. An alluring pad harmony and a hidden inspirational message from the artist introduce the fascinatingly titled "Saut Dans Le Vide", a masterful arrangement of unrelenting piano chords, subtle choir stabs, dreamy flute leads, and compellingly staggering drums. Elements keep artfully alternating throughout this convoluted composition which arouses a pensive, melancholy-nuanced hopefulness. It's time to get glitchy here, as "Undead" makes its entrance. Shimmering melodies rain down in a glittery shower of eerie purple confetti, surrounded by rattling white noise strikes, and playful-yet-mighty bass hits. As the story evolves, an 8-bit synth lead briefly takes us to a post-apocalyptic landscape before we momentarily wake up from this psychedelic daydream, just in time to take a breath and dive back in for round two.

BUDD, ROY The Internecine Project LP
Unreleased masterpiece by Roy Budd, the master of British 1970s scores. Composed and recorded in 1974, The Internecine Project is a truly classic Roy Budd score, released here and now on vinyl (and on any format) for the very first time. And it's worth buying just for the totally sublime track called "Mr Easy". Coming from the peak Roy Budd period -- post Get Carter (1971) and pre Diamonds (1976) -- this score neatly bridges the two with Carter-style hypnotic, jazz-driven cues and superb Diamonds-style drama. The film itself was a slick British thriller directed by Ken Hughes, set in a gray, gloomy London and based around espionage and murder. The plot is simple; former spy Robert Elliot (the ice cool James Coburn -- with interesting facial hair and equally as interesting wardrobe) is given a big government job. In order to cut all questionable ties and clean up his rather grubby past he devises a plan in which all of his dodgy associates unwittingly kill each other on the same night -- and in alphabetical order. The film's unusual and often misspelt name comes from the word internecine -- the definition of which is conflict within a group. Full color sleeve; includes sleeve notes.

WONG + TAKAKO MINEKAWA + GOOD WILLSMITH, DUSTIN Exit Future Heart LP
2018 release. Exit Future Heart follows three Good Willsmith albums released on Umor Rex and three albums by Dustin Wong and Takako Minekawa on Thrill Jockey. Recorded live at home in Chicago over the course of one night when Wong and Minekawa passed through on tour, Exit Future Heart showcases a program of spontaneous compositions that flow through mutated tropes of rock music, focused ambient/kosmische synthesis, and expanses of raw textural sculpting. The singular performance styles and improvisatory gestures of each member of the quintet fuse into a delicate interplay charged more by open spaces and deep listening than by overload or abandon. Takako Minekawa and Natalie Chami chase each other through the mix with layered angelic vocalizations that flit from operatic highs to close-mic whispers. Minekawa's flute-like Casio tones, prominently featured in her catalog of seminal shibuya-kei pop albums starting in the mid-90s, cut through in moments of colorful melody and hover in clouds of restrained pointillist harmony. As in her solo recordings under the name TALsounds, Chami's signature Juno organ chords and cascading monophonic Moog blips compound through live looping and processing into the undulating bedrock of each session. Dustin Wong's guitar shines in passages of crystalline clean tone picking and rockets into bursts of effect-soaked abstraction, capturing the glowing precision of his solo albums and the optimistic energy of his former noise/rock band, Ponytail. When he's not painting the mix with smeared arpeggios and quivering synth textures, Doug Kaplan (one half of Chicago label Hausu Mountain) locks with Wong into tiered guitar riffs. In step with the frantic, style-mashing electronic arrangements of his solo project Mukqs, Maxwell Allison (the other half of Hausu Mountain) steers a rig of synths and drum machines through shifting IDM-esque bass and drum patterns, steady krautrock-inspired beats, and bleeping 8-bit square wave patches. Channeling a varied palette of sounds at their disposal, the Dustin Wong + Takako Minekawa + Good Willsmith quintet's extended improvisations segue through contrasting atmospheres and emotional zones. Rock backbeats pulse behind dense clouds of guitar and voice before fading into clattering arrhythmia. Empty passages embodying the Japanese notion of "ma" (or intervals of negative space) erupt for short moments with individual interjections before sinking back into near nothingness. DRIFTMACHINE Shunter 12"
2018 release. Shunter, the album by the Berlin-based duo Driftmachine, is their most ambitious work to date. Although instantly recognizable, featuring their trademark kosmische and avant-garde sounds, it also presents a new journey into abstract and hallucinatory worlds. Filled with eerie textures, their electronic visions are darker and more vaporous than ever. Driftmachine's fourth album (also the fourth one for Umor Rex) offers a new perspective on their ample sound spectrum and systemic narratives. Shunter overlaps and mutates their post-industrial-dub motives. It was conceived and produced in search of a very different kind of imagery, with sections of noise and field recordings intersecting with analogue sounds; a mixture of contrasted fragments, where the usual creative process of modular-synthesis leads Andreas Gerth and Florian Zimmer to the discovery of a dark, hazy and diffused experience. There is a protean quality to the rhythmic elements, with tempos constantly contracting and expanding, a departure from the mono-beat-rhythms of "Nocturnes" and "Colliding Contours". The first half of Shunter is made of four pieces named "Shift"; although individually separated, they are conceptually linked and can be understood as a sort of score. Imagine a late stage of the industrial revolution, with the interaction between heavy machinery and human beings. The second half of the album is not completely separated, but it has three other substantial melodic moments. Somewhere between the hauntological and the realms of archive-music, a huge range of subterranean beats and distinct patterns dotting the landscape of early electronic and post dub music. All songs written and produced by Driftmachine, Berlin. Design by Daniel Castrejón. Mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri.
