BETWEEN SLEEPS Fantasia LP
Between Sleeps is a French producer based in Paris, passionate about sound design and synthesizers. His stage name and musical world evoke the state of semi-consciousness, when neither awake nor asleep. With dreamy pads and strong rhythms, his music mixes electronica, house, and techno. Boards Of Canada, Lone, or The Field are among his main influences. All the tracks included on Fantasia have been composed with the same hardware set-up: a sampler, an FM synthesizer and a subtractive analog synthesizer. Every track has been recorded in one stereo take.

CHEVALS Be Yourself EP 12"
Apparel Music is the platform, Chevals the protagonist, vinyl the material, end of March 2020 is the period of time decided for the landing of the Frenchman's first solo body of work for the "lovers dogs" label. Be Yourself is the title of the four-track EP by the artist which, by the headline itself, sounds like a declaration of intentions, an acknowledgement of his qualities as a producer, shaping up four different aspects of his creative attitude in a remarkable musical effort. The EP takes off with the title track which is a perfect display of Cheval's capabilities when it comes to the art of developing intersecting harmonies and melodies, setting up the perfect ground for a smooth vocal line that keeps on repeating the concept in a hypnotic loop: "just be yourself". With "Keep On" the bpm increases to design a beat driven track that winks to northern European rhythms in an apotheosis of upbeat acid lines, a vibey overlapping of loops we advise against light-sleepers! Side B starts with a more rhythmically classic composition called "Good Good" which is also the last of the three original tracks; here the strings section mashes up with the vocals, as usual expertly crafted by Chevals and again some hints of acid bass line to form a proper dance floor hit. B2 is dedicated to Madcat's remix of "Good Good", where the French producer explains his point of view with a funkier version of the track but keeping the essential parts intact. Impossible not to be excited by this EP by the Parisian producer who finally slams his fist on the table in what is his best musical statement so far.

BRADOCK, PEPE Dactilonomy I 12"
This is the first chapter of Dactylonomy, a 12" pentalogy, Dumb Thumb, starting as a fat dusty fingerprint, with two mirroring enlightening tracks that are more than happy to benefit from the joys of hitchhiking on their way to dancefloor welfare. It's a metronome-like and alphabetical choreography, based on an incognito personality, trailblazing kick drums, fragile synths stabs, double-edged sword chords, ghostly snippets, and all that jazz. "Audio Jewels" is a bouncy signature track that should get listeners high as a kite, responding to "Mattithyahu," which is a three act play anticipating the coming chapter two with its abstract, bit-carving, frequency-shifting, mono-merciful tones, and precise, hopeful echoes, along with a 303+808+909 coda for vintage synth fans out there. Designed for serious back up. What else? If six is harmony and 126 BPM, then surely ATA 21=126 / 6 Remember that the best is yet to come; can you dig it?

JAMAL TRIO, THE AHMAD The Awakening LP
2020 repress. Be With Records present a reissue of The Ahmad Jamal Trio's The Awakening, originally released in 1970. Ahmad Jamal is a jazz giant and The Awakening is his iconic masterpiece. The landmark deep trio session -- recorded in NYC and released on Impulse! in 1970 -- is an essential album and perennially sought-after on vinyl. Ahmad Jamal is a jazz giant and The Awakening is his iconic masterpiece. As a "Zen master of jazz piano" and one of its greatest innovators, Jamal evolved his elegant sound with this adventurous record. The Awakening showcased his fast, richly melodic chops in remarkable variation. A consummate orchestrator of his own complex arrangements, Jamal was emboldened here by his potent sidemen. Backed by the exquisite timing of bassist Jamil Nasser and the precision of Frank Gant's drumming, he was liberated by the reliability of the trio setup. Free to juggle rhythmic dexterity with harmonic intricacy, Jamal brilliantly performed groove-oriented compositions written by himself, alongside wonderful renditions of tracks by Herbie Hancock, Oliver Nelson, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. It is impossible to discuss The Awakening without acknowledging its indelible mark on golden age rap. A defining album of hip-hop culture, producers of the highest caliber have famously sampled elements of this timeless record to lace all-timers with a foundation for their most legendary tracks. Indeed, both the experimental "DJ Premier In Deep Concentration" and Shadez Of Brooklyn's seminal "Change" utilized Jamal's sparse title-track to stunning effect. A melancholy motif from "I Love Music" was employed by Pete Rock for Nas's crucial "The World Is Yours" whilst, over a more abstract refrain from the same track, Jeru memorably delivered his "Me Or The Papes" ultimatum. Over in Chicago, No I.D. elevated Common's peerless "Resurrection" by lifting a precise riff from Jamal's plaintive rendition of "Dolphin Dance" whilst the head-nod quality of All Natural's hypnotic "Renaissance" owes it all to the looped keys of Jamal's take on "You're My Everything". With bold beauty and unhurried grace, Ahmad Jamal plays piano differently from everyone else. He was a huge inspiration to Miles Davis and influential to how Wynton Kelly performed across Kind of Blue (1959). Presented in a gatefold sleeve adorned with the original eye-catching artwork throughout, along with the original sleeve notes. Mastered by Simon Francis and pressed for the first time on 180 gram vinyl.

WILLSON, IAN Straight From The Heart LP
Be With Records work with Ian Willson to reissue his self-released, West Coast classic Straight From The Heart, privately pressed and originally released in 1985. This is the only album Ian ever put out. A magical blend of AOR/sophisticated funk/synth-boogie/spiritual jazz and modern soul, it's a spellbinding record of many colors. You might already know Straight From The Heart for the dubby-disco paranoid-Balearic anthem "Four In The Morning", and it's easy to assume this is probably just another one of those one-track LPs. But this is an impressively slick record from start to finish. Album opener "Think About It" is all sorts of right. It's emotional. It's tops-off. It's funk in its purest form. And take the proto-modern-funk of the title track (half Dâm-Funk/half Dâd-Funk). The shimmering, spiritual bossa-jazz of "If I Were You" serves as the album's soaring centerpiece. A gorgeous suite of cosmic vibes to get Gilles frothing, it sounds like nothing else on the record which makes sense given that it was recorded a couple of years earlier, and is the only track on the LP that wasn't recorded in Ian's own studio. Side B opens with the propulsive ode to love that is "Two Is Better Than One". Wonderfully sparse when it needs to be, it's also richly percussive and that special kind of California-warm. Frenetic, speaker smashing synth and horn workout "Funk Invasion" dares you not to dance and "A Game Called Love" is heavily indebted to Prince with its lush, deep funk stylings. The sweeping sax-drenched instrumental "Song For Katelyn" is head-nod, beat-heavy AOR for that melancholic magic hour. It all adds up to the ultimate BBQ record. Almost all of Straight From The Heart was recorded over a few months between 1983 and 1984 on Ian's brand new Otari 8 track in the Oakland, California studio he built just the year before. Only "If I Were You" was recorded elsewhere, at Bay Sound in 1982. Ian produced the album himself and played all of the instruments, except for the guitar of his longtime friend, Peter Fujii. Tower Of Power, Average White Band, Earth Wind & Fire, and Stevie Wonder was the list of influences Ian gave when asked. Why did he put the record out himself? Simple, he had no idea how to go about getting a record deal. The original tapes have long since been lost. This reissue was remastered from Ian's one-and-only pristine copy.

PRAMUK, LYRA Fountain LP
Lyra Pramuk's debut Fountain explores a post-human, non-binary understanding of life. Lyra Pramuk fuses classical training, pop sensibilities, performance practices and contemporary club culture in what may best be described as futurist folk music. While the American operatically-trained vocalist and electronic musician is perhaps previously best known for her work with musical collaborators such as Holly Herndon and Colin Self, her debut album, Fountain, will be released via Iceland's Bedroom Community label. Created entirely from her own voice, although often shaped and structured by electronics, Fountain is an emotional, sensual, and devotional journey. The title is derived from her family name, Pramuk, which translates from Czech as "well spring" or "fountain". Often wordless, these songs evoke a new wholeness sustained by the ritual force of drowning, immersion, cleansing, and bathing -- also referred to in the album artwork by acclaimed visual artist Donna Huanca. Fountain plays with the perception of music, rhythms, speech, body, and the relation between technology and humanity, exploring a post-human, non-binary understanding of life and the fragile ecosystems it depends on. The work documents a healing that is still in process, and a full circle-moment that reunited Lyra with her sound engineer twin brother, Ben, for the final mix, which they completed in tandem. As a vocal activist and member of the queer community, Fountain's creation also coincided with a personal rejuvenation for its author. Its completion culminated in the live premiere of the album material at Unsound Festival in Krakow in 2019, where she performed through a multi-channel array designed by Ben Frost, opening for Sunn O))) and Roly Porter. A closer collaboration with Frost on a soundtrack for a new film project will be announced later in 2020. Her performance at Berghain in January for CTM Festival in her hometown of Berlin promises an even more confident and joyous realization of the album's song cycle. Lyra moved to Berlin in 2013 as a DAAD postgraduate study scholarship recipient, following her degree at the Eastman School of Music in New York. Since then, she has also been awarded residencies at Elektronmusikstudion EMS Stockholm, Open Port Club Residency in Tokyo and Sapporo, and Future Music Lab of the Atlantic Music Festival in Maine. Her interests also encompass writing, poetry, and fashion, where she is sometimes called upon as a model.

DAVACHI & ARIEL KALMA, SARAH Intemporel LP
Repressed. On Intemporel, Sarah Davachi and Ariel Kalma blend their strong individual personalities in a single trip on the edge of time. Their kosmiche music is pure, magnificent, and elegant, an intergalactic hypnosis that seems to tell of distant times, a millenary vortex of a lost era. In the first phase of departure, the mysterious song of the sax winds in archaic echoes, supported by the electronic inlays of the Arp Odyssey synth. Flowing between space rumbles and astral progressions, one sights high celestial bodies. When the infinite drones of the tampura start, one takes part in the night ceremonial, surrounded by deep harmonium and the Tibetan bell chimes. This music releases a sort of mythological warmth, secret codes of a lost purity, which lets one dwell in the labyrinths of a pyramid or in the sacred space of a cosmic pagoda.

BEHRMAN/PAUL DEMARINIS/FERN FRIEDMAN/TERRI HANLON/ANNE KLINGENSMITH, DAVID She's More Wild... LP
Black Truffle announce the release of She's More Wild..., a collaborative project by David Behrman, Paul DeMarinis, Fern Friedman, Terri Hanlon, and Anne Klingensmith recorded at Mills College in 1981. Previously known only to cognoscenti through an obscure self-released three-track 7", this is the first publication of the complete album, an outrageous confection that mixes art-song and theatrical monolog with live electronics. Starting life as a performance art piece described by the artists as "Western Performance Noir", the record centers on a series of texts written by Friedman and Hanlon in which female narrators comically embody a series of iconic roles (The Recording Artist, The Former Movie Star, and The Rancher). Other lyrical themes include recurring references to the notorious cannibal pioneers, the Donner Party, an ironic take on Japanophilia, and the luscious "Archetypal Unitized Seminar", a satirical poke at self-help culture, whose lyrics are rendered in Indian raga style to the accompaniment of electronic glissandi and toy noisemakers. Delivered by Friedman, Hanlon, Klingensmith, and special guest Maggi Payne in forms ranging from spoken monolog to country and western waltz, the texts are accompanied by instrumental and electronic contributions by Behrman and DeMarinis. Musically, She's More Wild... is truly unique, demonstrating these two pioneers of live-electronic performance adapting their signature processes to something approaching a "pop" format: you hear the gliding, frequency-sensitive electronics familiar from Behrman's classic On the Other Ocean and the mutant hacked Speak n' Spell heard on DeMarinis' Songs Without Throats (BT 041LP, 2019) propelled by drum machines and twisted into song forms. Perhaps comparable only to the David Rosenboom and Jacqueline Humbert's contemporaneous Daytime Viewing in its interweaving of performance art tactics, high-tech electronics and pop sensibilities, She's More Wild... is an essential document, both immediately gratifying and ultimately thought provoking. Gatefold sleeve with various texts and archival images; sleeve design by Lasse Marhaug. Mastered and cut by Kassian Troyer at Dubplate & Mastering, Berlin.

PAILHES, EZECHIEL Oh! LP
LP version. Includes download code; beautiful poster inlay with cover photo and lyrics. On his third solo album, following the success of Éternel été, Ezechiel Pailhès, the founder of the electro duo Nôze is exploring, through piano and synths, the encounter between poetry and song. In this new work he has set to music verses by William Shakespeare, Victor Hugo, Pablo Neruda, and on three songs, those of the poet Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, a pioneer of romanticism who notably influenced Verlaine and Baudelaire. For Oh!, Pailhès wanted to explore further the adaptation of poems into songs. "Bien Certain" is, once again, taken from William Shakespeare. "Tu te rappelleras" comes from Pablo Neruda's collection La centaine d'amour. "Oh! Pourquoi te cacher?" is from Victor Hugo. As for "Sans l'oublier", "La sincere", and "J'avais froid", they were all written by Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, a 19th century French poetess, still fairly unknown. With Oh!, Pailhès has become more of a singer than ever before, through seven songs and four instrumental compositions, with intimate and warm modulations, carried by hypnotic piano melodies, instruments with unusual timbre and a subtle electronic production that recalls his past productions with his former duo Nôze. Produced in his Montreuil home studio, Oh! is nevertheless imbued with an emotion found in his previous albums, close to "saudade" or a slight melancholy, sometimes enhanced by chosen texts that evoke the disappointment of love, the longing, the distance between two people, or even men's weakness. From classical to pop music, the adaptation of poetry is part of a long tradition in France. On the album, songs like "La sincere" or "Tu te rappelleras" are probably closer to the way Serge Gainsbourg or Serge Reggiani approached poetry than Léo Ferré who is usually referred to in this regard. Lastly, "Constellation", "Wolf 359", "Almost there", and "Cakewalk", the four instrumental tracks on the album on which a sung or whispered voice sometimes appears, explore an inspiration close to previous albums, mixing piano, prepared piano (various objects are placed between the strings to transform its timbre), synthesizer, clavietta (a kind of melodica), not to forget a few collages and digital processes. Ballads with a cinematographic mood that respond in an abstract and dreamlike way to the texts of great poets...

VA Amarcord Nino Rota CD
Restocked; RIP Hal Willner. Corbett Vs. Dempsey present a reissue of Amarcord Nino Rota, a tribute album assembled by producer Hal Willner, originally released by Hannibal Records in 1981. If you think you know how to put a mix-tape together, take a lesson from Hal Willner, the absolute master. In 1981, Willner produced a landmark record of interpretations of music written by Nino Rota for the films of Federico Fellini. With ten tracks and as many different lineups, this record set the template for a series of brilliant tributes that Willner has made over the ensuing 35 years, covering the songbooks of Monk, Mingus, Weill, and Disney, with a mind-expanding range of performers from Eugene Chadbourne to Chuck D to Diamanda Galas to Peter Frampton. On Amarcord Nino Rota, Willner drew together an equally dazzling spectrum of musicians, compiling them into a perfect program that explores Rota's wonderful, sly, sexy oeuvre from contrasting and complementary perspectives. Pianist Jaki Byard sets the stage with the title track and ends things with "La Strada", and in his first appearance on record, guitarist Bill Frisell contributes a haunting solo acoustic version of "Juliet Of The Spirits". Soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy, who lived in Rome early in his international years, offers a take on Rota's "Roma" and vibraphonist Dave Samuels provides interludes and transitions in a couple of spots. On the other end of the size bracket, Muhal Richard Abrams arranges and conducts his band as part of "La Dolce Vita Suite", which ends with a rock group featuring Debbie Harry singing a wordless waltz. The Carla Bley Band presents a daunting, suitably hilarious version of "8 ½", with Gary Windo's ballistic tenor saxophone, a David Amram Quintet with Sharon Freeman on French horn plays "Satyricon", and in a surprise appearance, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis plays alongside his brother Branford, tenor saxophonist George Adams, pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Wilbert Fletcher, in William Fischer's arrangement of a medley of Rota chestnuts. Long out-of-print on LP and only released on CD for a hot minute in the early nineties, Amarcord Nino Rota is a certifiable classic.

CAMINITI, EVAN Varispeed Hydra LP
Los Angeles based artist Evan Caminiti returns with the follow up to 2017's Toxic City Music. Living in the wrong timeline, dreaming of possible utopias; Varispeed Hydra beams in like a collection of broken transmissions, terrestrial sounds melting into the abstract and rising again as vaporous specters. Three years in the making, Hydra was recorded utilizing a variety of electroacoustic processes and honed in live performances ranging from the sound art setting of NYC's Issue Project Room to the future-club environment of DOMMUNE in Tokyo. While thematically following Toxic City Music, it moves past that album's emphasis on superfund sites and the proverbial rat race to turn an ear towards more rural environs. With a focus on some of the sounds we stand to lose if we continue on our current trajectory of ecological destruction, birds, insects, and water are most often found among the glowing synthesizers and warped electric guitar that comprise the album's melodic and rhythmic core. Connecting a thread between musique concrete and dub, these sounds are atomized and diffused before being woven together with a sense of urgency, a colorful and restless haze. Phasing percussion and blurred melodies are wrapped in a fog as they tumble and glitch, occupying a space where ominous rumblings and bucolic bliss blur together. An offering of cautious optimism in the age of anxiety. Artwork by Michael Vallera and Zane Morris. Written and produced by Evan Caminiti, featuring electronics by Lisa McGee. Mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studios; Vinyl cut at Dubplates and Mastering Berlin. Includes download code; edition of 300.

LEWIS, KLARA Ingrid LP
Following 2018's acclaimed collaboration with Simon Fisher Turner, Care (EMEGO 253LP), Swedish sound artist Klara Lewis returns with Ingrid, her third solo release for Editions Mego. Ingrid is a departure from Lewis's previous solo outings, drifting from the eerie rhythmic variations of Too (EMEGO 210CD/LP, 2016) and Ett (EMEGO 190LP, 2014) and moving assuredly into long-form experimentation. The piece retains those records' pulsing core and builds on a single cello loop that is steadily enveloped by a surge of distortion. It's almost like a voice or chant, shifting pointedly from a whisper into a scream before singing peacefully into the light. At times, Ingrid is reminiscent of William Basinski's looping melancholy or Steve Reich's controlled and innovative phase experiments, while at others, it recalls the chaotic Scandinavian physicality of black metal. Yet, the entire composition is anchored in Klara Lewis's distinct emotional world. By dissolving familiar and beautiful strings in baths of noise, Lewis allows something violent but tender to grow in its place. In a society struck through by cynicism, Ingrid is a cathartic listening experience and a beacon of hope. One-sided LP. Mastered by Sarah Register. Cut by Andreas Kauffelt at Schnitstelle, Berlin.

SHAKESPEARE, FINLAY Solemnities LP
Finlay Shakespeare is a freak. With this, his second album for Editions Mego confirms this. As a one man band it often strikes the listener as bewildering that he can do all this; the programming sits firmly in the realms of genius, the constant punch of melody upon melody leaves a pleasant sting of surprise and as a lyric writer there's a part of his moniker that seems apt. Solemnities is more gritty than his previous outings as a more raucous industrial edge is grafted on to his epic electronic pop leanings. "Occupation" launches proceedings as a snarling electro pop monster. Finlay's vocals have never been delivered with such urgency. From here it's one melodic banger followed by another as Shakespeare truly hones his voice and craft into something utterly of his own devising, despite, or as a result of, the specific world of electronic music he is referencing. Covering a wide range of emotional states, from anger to euphoria this is a wild complex dip into one man's world perfectly crafted into an external release. "She Says / Nothing Ends" concludes proceedings with an anthem so bold it would be a worldwide hit if the world could be told. Find a comfortable position, turn Solemnities up loud and let Finlay take you on this startling spectacular trip. All material written, performed, produced and recorded by Finlay Shakespeare. Mastered by Cicely Balston. Artwork by Meggie Wood.

JUSTKA, EWA Upside Down Smile LP
Upside Down Smile was recorded and produced by Ewa Justka and by self-designed, self-made, selfselfself, odd looking slightly dysfunctional synthesizers and by a trance purple killer Roland JP8080 and by his brother Virus and some other Roland Brothers. No sisters included during the time when Ewa Justka, who currently lives in Glasgow, Govanhill, Allison Street, where recently her passport was stolen due to the burglary, where she lives in joy, although sometimes the floor gets wet due to the leaking windows and sometimes one can find dead pigeons laying on the staircase. But it's nice and cozy and Ewa Justka, highly influential person in the deep dark transistor ladder circuits, lives there since she is studying PhD at Edinburgh College of Art where she thinks a lot about imitation in synthesizer design and filters and VCOs and formants and acid and hardcore music and Twin T filters and operational amplifiers. She turns knobs and thinks and the Upside Down Smile album was made in the depth of those thoughts, quite often sad thoughts. Upside Down Smile is a bit of a cynical smile but an honest smile. Cynical but honest Upside Down Smile is a smile through tears but tears of joy, Scottish joy. Upside Down Smile is upside down acid one could say. Upside Down Smile could be interpreted as a sad smile but it is a smile in the end of the day. Mastered by Russell Haswell. Download card includes three additional tracks.

POPNONAME Horizons 2LP
You learned that there are genres. Everything separated into categories with their own canon and rules: Major, minor, 4/4, 6/8, highs, lows, high head, butt end. Techno here, disco there. You learned that art and music are two different things. Visually auditory, audio-visual, optically acoustic, not to mention the surface feel. Listen to me, look at me, touch me. But everything in that order please! You have learned that understanding takes you further. Night/life, rhythm/dancing, substance/excess, water/holding out, sleep/rest, headache/not good. But what would it be if all of that wasn't just right? If all of our knowledge is based on the mistake of having to put everything in relation? To classify it, to make it responsive. What do we do with something that doesn't follow the rules of this logic? That is not based on 0 and 1 and therefore not bound to our binary systems? Is this all at once? After all, what if the whole thing has no limits? Jens-Uwe Beyer recently released the Yellow Book with Albert Oehlen on Gagosian and on his own label Magazine (2019). He also runs PNN and Schalen. His fourth album Horizons as Popnoname is the very first long player to be released on Cologne-based label Feines Tier.

PONCET, ROMAN Focal EP 12"
Roman Poncet back on full form, delivering his next EP for Figure. These four tracks are testament to his mastery of many styles while working as nuanced and meticulous as ever. Each track inhabits a singular drive or momentum, outgrowing the confines of pure techno tools. Take opener "He Comes For You", a muscular example of a dynamic and spacious building block, keeping the energy leveled and ready to move wherever it may be needed. Coming in a close second, "Taal" nods towards house-y structures, clocking in a fast and playful attitude within a strict techno's framework. "Sofra" is harnessing the anthemic power of trance-style synths while not overplaying the old school card in favor of letting Poncet's slick sound design do its work. Finally, dubbed-out beauty "Focal" ushers this record out smoothly, its echoing chords glistening effortlessly atop a powerful low-end bassline.

SLICK RICK Children's Story 7"
"Storytelling has been a part of the hip-hop lexicon since the artform's earliest days. And in all those decades, there has never been a taleweaver like Slick Rick. Even masters who came along in Rick's wake -- ranging from Will Smith to Ghostface Killah and Eminem -- know that even though they blazed their own paths, they never did it better than the Slick one. When it comes to Rick and his tales, 1988's 'Children's Story' is perhaps his best, recited to this day by fans and MCs in training as a rite of passage. Just hearing the opening lines begins a sing-along that can quickly fill a room: 'Once upon a time / Not long ago / When people wore pajamas / And lived life slow...' In recognition of such top-tier hip-hop storytelling, Get On Down now presents this 45 single reissue of the Slick Rick classic, featuring 'The Moment I Feared' on the B-side. This 7" re-release, previously only available as part of Get On Down's 2017 Record Store Day offerings, comes packaged in a re-creation of the original 12" cover art, and is the perfect addition to your old school vinyl collection."

TITO Quetzalcoatl LP
Glossy Mistakes present a reissue of Tito's Quetzalcóatl, originally released in 1977. Proto-electronics psychedelic Mexican holy grail. Inspired by Vangelis, Tomita, or Kraftwerk, this unknown rarity gets a second life sounding fresh and pioneering today, Tito was born in 1946 in Ciudad de México, the son of two Spaniards. Since he was a youngster, he had felt the passion for music and instruments. In the meantime, he started a career as architect. Since his early years, he joined various teen rock bands, where he played bass and guitar. Slowly but surely, his interest in synthesizers started to grow. And the rest is history. Tito defines himself as an "electronic sounds fanatic". Quetzalcóatl is a truly authentic cornerstone in those terms: an inspired and eclectic artist gives shape to a unique sound through legendary synthesizers such as the MiniMoog or the Arp Odyssey. His passion was so embedded that he even built his own guitars and equalizers; some of which appear on this LP. Quetzalcóatl, his debut solo album, was originally recorded in 1977 (now remastered) in his bedroom using a four-channel Sony recorder in a truly DIY way. This album could be considered as a rarity. But if you listen hard enough, you find a pioneering treasure. Somehow, Quetzalcoátl anticipated the sounds of future decades with simple but inspired compositions. It is a mythological trip to the Pre-Hispanic México. This album is an allegory of the Aztec world. Quetzalcoátl is the most important God for Mesoamerican cultures: it represents the inherent human dualism between the body (represented by the snake) and soul (the feathers). In the song "Profecía", Quetzalcoátl emerges, announcing the end of the world at the hand Spanish colonialism. Remastered in Amsterdam by Wouter Brandenburg. Comes with insert; edition of 600.

Three masterpieces of the European stoner scene. These three records elevated the scene to a higher level and gave Dozer the scepter of the Scandinavian stoner movement. In the post-Kyuss era, Dozer, along with bands like Los Natas and Acid King, brought a flurry of pure, desert-style monolithic riffs and tons of fuzz guitars. The songwriting on all these three albums was what really distinguished Dozer from the other bands of the early 2000s. The band had a very big influence on the European stoner bands and it can definitively be said that Dozer are one of the European stoner godfathers. Dozer's last album was Beyond Colossal in 2008, and it's unknown if they will ever return back with a new release. But in the meantime enjoy this special "threesome"...As with hundreds of other young Swedish bands, Dozer was the obvious answer to the boredom of a small town youth in a land where the sun seldom visits. After forming in 1995, Dozer emerged in 1998 with their debut 7" which was awarded "Single of the Week" in Kerrang! magazine. Dozer quickly progressed beyond their early influences and created a style of their own incorporating modern elements into their classic heavy rock sound. A sound that always has been intensely heavy but yet also strongly song and melody driven by the distinctive vocals of singer Fredrik Nordin. Dozer has carefully cultivated a following like none other and a reputation second to none due mostly assuredly to their constant touring and explosive live shows. These simple Swedes have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the world of stoner rock, often placed upon the same pedestal as the fathers of the movement: Kyuss and Monster Magnet. With the release of their fifth full length album Beyond Colossal, these sons of Sweden seemed poised to teach the Underground a lesson or two about what Rock and Roll is all about. After a hiatus the band came back again with some live shows over the last years.

BELLENS, JACOB My Heart Is Hungry And The Days Go By So Quickly LP
Danish singer and songwriter Jacob Bellens presents his fifth solo album, My Heart Is Hungry And The Days Go By So Quickly. Thanks to his unique voice and his talent for heartfelt melodies, over the years Jacob, also known as front man of I Got You On Tape and Murder, has become one of the most distinctive figures on the Scandinavian music scene. Slightly darker in tone than its predecessors Trail Of Intuition (HFN 080CD/LP, 2018) or Polyester Skin (HFN 053CD/LP, 2016), the new album lets us see the world through Jacob's eyes. The new album is somewhere between left-field pop and a classical singer/songwriter approach, the songs were recorded in two sessions with producer Mads Brinch, drummer Tobias Laust, bass player Jonas Westergaard, keyboardist Malthe Rostrup, and guitarist Tobias Fuglsang. "So many good friends and amazing instrumentalists have contributed to the sound," explained Jacob. "And mostly, people were playing what they felt the song needed, which was an incredibly inspiring way of just letting the process develop naturally, and take on a life of its own." As such, the recordings give off a distinct light-footed and organic feel. Rich in metaphors, the lyrics deal with personal perceptions based on everyday life occurrences that at the same time hint at the meaning of life in general -- or at least suggest a higher perspective. The sonic expression is timeless but also modernistic and the lyrical point of view is refreshingly diverse, never just black or white. The sad songs have uplifting, often surreal qualities, and the lighter, up-tempo songs also invite to a certain darkness. A flower basket full of difficult emotions, sprinkled with magical fairy dust that somehow makes everything worthwhile. Includes download code; printed inner sleeve with lyrics.

VA Bongo Beats and Bankruptcy: The Sound of I'm A Cliche 3LP
Independent labels have always been risky ventures, marred by uncertainty; you never know how long they'll last for. Yet, for more than 15 years, Cosmo Vitelli has kept I'm A Cliché going. During this time, his label, its releases, and the artists behind them have found their place in the musical landscape, standing proudly and defiantly in the margins, a place where music is always more interesting and fluid than right in the middle of the spotlight. After countless EPs, several albums, and a compilation, a new chapter in I'm A Cliché's story begins, one with a greatly reduced release schedule. To mark this turning point, the label releases Bongo Beats and Bankruptcy, its second compilation ever. Aesthetically coherent and simultaneously diverse in its expressions, Bongo Beats and Bankruptcy is a celebration of the label (and the label manager's) quirks and eccentricities and a tongue-in-cheek snapshot that brilliantly captures the label's DNA, featuring friends and allies along with newer faces on 13 exclusive tracks scattered over three LPs. Whether they are downtempo, up-tempo or ambient, like Orestt's contribution, each tune on this compilation distills in its own idiosyncratic way I'm A Cliché's essence: electronic music influenced by club culture but in no way constrained to the dancefloor. Ivan Smagghe and Marc Collin's analog synth track by their acclaimed Volga Select project, June's dreamy tune at the crossroads between wave and kraut influences, Coy's mutant synth arpeggios, and an old-school wave cut by Oliver Decrow mixed by Dunkeltier are all tracks boldly standing on the dancefloor's margins. For those looking for club-ready tracks that with I'm A Cliché's one-of-a-kind atmosphere will surely find what they are after in an downtempo edit of Awkward Corners, a bouncy and melodic IDM not IDM number by Rouge Mécanique, a bleeps and pan-pipes affair by Benoît B, an esoteric dance-rock number with stated Lynch influences by Fantastic Twins, a freaky electro cut by Linja, a melancholic 707 driven banger by Krikor and finally an anxious and forward-thinking half-stepper by label head Cosmo Vitelli. Also features Awkward Corners, Sunju Hargun, Andrew Claristidge, and Odopt. Edition of 300.

KASPAR, JONATHAN Kante EP 12"
Kompakt welcome a local Cologne hero, Jonathan Kaspar. He's released on Crosstown Rebels, Pets Recordings, Ouie, and of course our own KX imprint. His single "Renard" was a highlight of Kompakt's recently released Total 19 collection (KOM 400LP/KOMP 154CD), so it was time to make the relationship official with a four-track EP. Opener "Kern" leads with layers of melodic synths power charged around a playful house rhythm. "Zentrum" is for that peak-time pace... elevating melodies caress a swelling mid-tempo beat. Not to mention one of the biggest breakdown's on Kompakt in some time. "Licht" literally sounds like it soars, then back to earth comes "Kante" -- the most techno inspired track of the EP -- an oscillating synth rips through solid low-end bass frequencies -- with Jonathan Kaspar skillfully demonstrating prime time, peak and valley production. Kante EP brings out his emotive, high energy style of writing and producing in a means that could be pointed to as his best work to date.

VA Minna Miteru 2CD
In collaboration with Markus Acher's Alien Transistor label, Morr Music presents a collection of hard-to-find Japanese independent music, compiled by Saya, who plays with Ueno Takashi in the iconic duo Tenniscoats. They are part of a current music scene, which is little known outside of Japan. Minna Miteru focuses on that very scene: the featured bands and musicians share a certain idea of DIY, and are also connected through frequent collaborations and mutual appreciation. Includes 32-page booklet. The following notes were written by Markus Acher, who also plays with Saya & Ueno in the band Spirit Fest: "In 2018 I was sitting in the Tenniscoats' kitchen with beer and music, looking at Ueno's wonderful risograph songbook 'Minna Miteru' (Everybody Watch) which collects the lyrics and chords of their friends' songs alongside his own illustrations, when Saya suggested putting together a compilation of these and other songs for our label. I couldn't have been happier, this sounded like a dream to me . . . here is Minna Miteru, a compilation of recent Japanese indie-music. And I'm very happy about it, because although there have been many great reissues of '70s and '80s Japanese music recently, most contemporary Japanese independent bands and artists are hardly known outside of Japan and so it's hard to find their music. And I couldn't think of a better guide to this special scene than Saya, whose love, dedication, and personal selections have made this such a unique and beautiful compilation. You'll hear some of the Tenniscoats' closest friends and collaborators (Eddie Marcon, Yumbo, Yuko Ikema), but also artists they are fans of, like the legendary Jun Konagaya (aka Grim) and many befriended bands that form a scene of uncategorizable outsiders in pop, like the one-man-orchestra Ichi, the trumpet-trumpet-organ-trio Popo, the mysterious psychedelic songwriter Aritomo, and the pianist/electronic musician, Ytamo. So many beautiful surprises: melodicas, electronics, folk-songs, brass bands, sound-experiments and melodies, melodies, melodies... Every song a treasure, exploding with ideas, and me personally, I could listen to the Tenniscoats and Yumbo collaboration and Zayaendo's 'Hiyodori' forever on repeat." Also features Takashi Hattori, namaeganai, Takako Minekawa ? Dustin Wong, Alpha, Vagamoron, Kasumi Trio, Go Hirano, Satoko Shibata, Tomoaki Saito + Tenco Matsuri, Cacoy, Andersens, Jiro Imai, Urichipangoon, Jun Konagaya, Nikasoup & Sayasource, Borzoi, and 2B.

SPIRIT FEST Mirage Mirage CD
"With Mirage Mirage, avant-pop quintet Spirit Fest gifts their listeners with their richest, deepest record to date. It's no surprise when you consider the group's membership: Saya and Ueno, aka the duo Tenniscoats; Markus Acher, best known as singer of The Notwist; Mat Fowler, who plays with Jam Money and Bons; and Cico Beck, who's making music with Joasinho, Aloa Input, and The Notwist. If that feels like a heavyweight line-up, that's because it is -- yet the overarching mood of Spirit Fest is one of lightness and joy, of experiment and pure pop pleasure. Sessions for the album were split between the Tenniscoats' Tokyo home studio in November 2018, and a small apartment studio in Munich in June 2019. Saya, Ueno and Markus pitched in songs, but sometimes, as with 'Fish With Arms', beguiling moments grew from group improvisations, often kicked off by Cico and Mat. All members stretched their instrumental limbs, too . . . There's a sincere, child-like generosity to the music, and a playfulness with an everyday surrealism you can hear in some of the experimental interjections across the album. Its final sound is the rolling click-clacking of a bicycle wheel. The bike was key to one of Mat's explorations of the Tenniscoats' Tokyo neighborhood . . . Stumbling across art amongst the everyday; that's also core to Spirit Fest . . . There's more here than just avant-pop: see the pronounced folksy lilt to 'The Snow Falls On Everyone'; or 'Mohikone', a gorgeous instrumental, droplets of piano pattering amongst a plangent acoustic guitar. The seven-minute 'Zenbu Honto (Every Thing Is Everything)' is a spiraling psychedelic pop mantra, with field recordings and slithering electronics tracing a path under the scrub-growth of guitar, piano, and drums. There are guest appearances from Micha Acher (The Notwist, Tied & Tickled Trio) on trumpet, and Aiko Okamoto, who takes part in the choral rounds of the album's closing tune, 'Saigo Song'. Whichever way you approach it, though, the guiding force of Spirit Fest is friendship and collaboration, giving life to collective dreaming..." --Jon Dale CD version comes in digipak; includes eight-page booklet.

SKYMARK Primeiras Impressoes LP
Mule Musiq present a reissue of Skymark's Primeiras Impressões, originally released in 2013. It is really rare that Mule Musiq does not offer new music for fresh imaginations. In the label's 15-year history, there only been a few reissues in the widely ramified discography: Lydia Lynch in 2006, Hans-Joachim Roedelius in 2013, Fumio Itabashi ?in 2018, and now with Skymark ?with his jazz album Primeiras Impressões. The Italian producer, composer, record collector, and Modern Sun Records label co-runner, that lists to the name Marc Friedli when he hands his tax report to the government, is no stranger to fans of modern Brazil, disco, fusion, house, Latin, jazz, funk, soul, and all other organically swinging music that grooves deep. Since 2007, he has released a string of albums and EPs on his own label as well as on imprints like Neroli, Mukatsuku Records, or Rush Hour, showing his impressive electric piano keyboard skills and unique style with an array of vintage synthesizers like ARP, Prophet, Moog, Roland, or Korg. On his privately pressed and strictly limited album, Primeiras Impressões, he delivered nine, gently jazzy tunes that process his experiences in the heat of Rio De Janeiro. They are intensely spiritual, they avoid ornamentation, and they bow before jazz history with a gentle respect, while adding an elegantly explorative and thrillingly uplifting freshness to the genre with deep discreet minimal funk and light-as-a-feather piano-melodies, as if the keyboard were a saxophone.

ONENESS OF JUJU African Rhythms LP
"Magical, mystical, Afrocentric, progressive -- words that could be used to describe any number of musical compositions by Sun Ra or his cosmic brothers and sisters, from John to Alice Coltrane, early '70s projects on record labels like Detroit's Tribe or Houston's Lightin' or the interests of one Washington, DC native named Jimmy Gray that centered under one, perfect moniker: Black Fire. Gray spent nearly three decades pushing boundaries as a Black American promoter, distributor, and, finally, record label owner. Together with Oneness of Juju's leader James 'Plunky Nkabinde' Branch, Gray oversaw sixteen releases on Black Fire Records between 1975 and 1996. These are the definitive reissues of five of the label's key titles: all were lacquered -- most directly from master tape -- by legendary Los Angeles mastering engineer Bernie Grundman, With this set, Oneness Of Juju and Black Fire's story burns forth into its fifth decade, its message not tempered, its sound pure. Its cycle, once again, complete. Each release is packaged in a thick, tip-on sleeve and includes a deluxe booklet with extensive notes on the album, the Black Fire collective, and the musical and cultural revolution they created. "These songs, found on reels that Marks kept in his home, color Marks' stylistic development -- from his earliest work for the legendary Tuska label in the late '60s, through his more mature releases on smaller regional labels into the late '70s. Marks' story is that of an unsung soul and funk hero; he was a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter whose phone number was in Al Green's, Barry White's and Eddie Kendricks' rolodexes, but his talents have only been heard in sporadic bursts. He and his music are unknown to the majority, but to an obsessive minority, he is a lightning rod: that singular point at which numerous Southern soul and funk musicians converged and exploded, spreading wondrous music in all directions. Marks died of cancer in May 2006. His first album was our Never Satisfied anthology, released posthumously. He stands out as a most mysterious talent to originate from Atlanta, a city that birthed no shortage of genius, and Love Is Gone: The Lost Sessions 1969-1977 further makes the case for a reassessment of his talents and his place in the soul and funk canon."

VENUS VOLCANISM Rizitiko LP
Venus Volcanism is the musician and electronic artist Rena Rasouli. She presents her first solo mini-album Rizitiko on Optimo's sub-label, Weaponise Your Sound, using traditional folk songs of her native island Crete as a basis for this work. Rizitiko evolved from Rasouli's thesis titled "the music performances based in traditional dialect focuses on the healing ability of sound." The songs were created and sung by folk troubadours. Expanding on these oeuvres, Rasouli seized on the idea that the melodic use of voice is the oldest form of therapy in human culture. This primary and ritualistic material was intertwined with electronic and natural ambient soundscapes. The resulting compositions express the omnipresent sensations and emotions that play a key role in the healing process whilst communicating an intense connection to the collective unconscious. Traditionally sung by men there are numerous reasons to believe that many of the songs were initially created by women. To sing them in a female voice projects a different approach to the traditional rendition -- one closer to that of a lullaby.

KYLE, ETAPP Nolove 12"
Etapp Kyle returns to Ostgut Ton with Nolove, a project encompassing a four-track EP, short film and forthcoming web exhibition focusing on Western Ukraine. Specifically, the music and artwork home in on the cities of Kamianets-Podilskyi and Chernivtsi in Bukovina, where Etapp Kyle grew up and developed his interest in electronic music. Although now part of Ukraine, Bukovina had previously been part of Moldova, the Habsburg Empire, the Russian Empire, Romania, and the Soviet Union. Its turbulent history and position on the border of Romania and Moldova have resulted in an extremely varied tapestry of cultural influence, as featured in the video for title track "Nolove". There, youth, fashion, music culture sit side-by-side next to religion, violence, and war -- and larger political struggles. The EP gives shape to the musical developments Etapp Kyle has made in both the studio and DJ booth since the release of 2017's Alpha, his latest 12" for Ostgut Ton. In contrast, Nolove's four tracks are minimalistic, detailed electronic ventures inspired by personal reflections on Chernivtsi and Ukrainian cultural identity. Forward-facing in rhythm and melody, the EP offers meticulously-produced leftfield dancefloor impressions of the region's past, present and future.

SANTROFI Alewa LP
LP version. Includes booklet and download code. "Even without an album out: [Santrofi] have already set the world on fire freaking out audiences all over Europe on their 2019 summer festival tour including Sines in Portugal, WOMAD in UK, Roskilde and WOMEX in Tampere. This young all-star band from Ghana brims with gifted musicians and energy on stage. The eight-piece collective is made up of a young generation of awarded musicians who have backed anyone in Ghana from Azonto sensation Sarkodie to Nigerian superstar 2 Face Idibia, but their passion isn't local pop but highlife. And their mission is to bring it back; not only to the world but also to Ghana, where the young generation has forgotten all about this great music. Santrofi's debut album Alewa now brings you a new wave of fresh highlife founded by bassist and producer Emmanuel Ofori who rose from the source having played with Ebo Taylor, Pat Thomas, and Kwashibu Area Band, and has now formed his own band collective: Santrofi. The eight musicians are deeply rooted in vintage Ghanaian highlife music in all its forms. The influences range from the riveting fast-paced pulse of '70s dance-guitar highlife, or the other-worldly sound of highlife funk to the polyrhythmic beats and melodies that took Afrobeat across the globe. The members have toured the world with legends like Ebo Taylor, Pat Thomas, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Osibisa, George Darko, and many others. They have learnt from the masters and are now ready to take highlife into the future. Alewa is a metaphor for a popularly known local black and white striped sweet. It symbolizes the need to recognize, accept, tolerate and embrace racial diversity to build a world with love and unity. On stage, Santrofi breaks down hierarchies the musicians alternate their roles each growing on the other's talent while harmonizing as a whole. Alewa was composed arranged, produced, and recorded in Ghana in a joint effort by Santrofi. Santrofi in Akan mythology is a rare and precious bird, identified by its bright colors and four wings; it is so unique, it was forbidden to be hunted. Attempting to catch and lock up the bird will bring you bad luck. If spotted and left to fly away, great luck and fortune can be expected. So let the bird fly!" Santrofi in Songlines

YUKSEK Nosso Ritmo CD
Yuksek unveils his new album featuring a bunch of France's finest artists on collaboration duties. This fourth album marks a turning point, that of independence and letting go. For three years, Yuksek has experimented, collaborated with many artists for no other purpose than shared pleasure. Nosso Ritmo is probably his most natural album, the one that sprang up by itself. At the release of his third album Nous Horizon (FINE 032CD/LP, 2017), Yuksek announced that it would surely be the last, tired of the music system, of touring. But then the desire came back with a return to the sources: DJing and music for dancing. The Latin, Brazilian influence is very clear in his DJ sets, and his collaborations with Fatnotronic (Philippi & Rodrigo) as well as with Processman and his tribute to Hélio Matheus (Mais Kriola) confirm on this album this taste for the Brazilian sound and the richness of its disco and pop scene of the '70s and '80s (Marcos Valle, Gilberto Gil, Di Melo...) For some, Nosso Ritmo will also sound more Anglo-Saxon than the previous ones, perhaps by his uninhibited and more instinctive approach, by his direct filiation with artists such as Sylvester (on "Into The Light" sung by Isaac Delusion) or his tributes to some '90s dirty house sound with "G.F.Y." (sung by Queen Rose), "This Feeling" and "Gorgeous" composed with Confidence Man. Also apparent on this album is Yuksek's taste for experimentation and de-structured and ecstatic electronic pieces, especially on his collaborations with Zombie Zombie and Polo & Pan, on "J'aime les Synthés" as well as on "Burning", produced with his companion longtime studio Jean-Sylvain from Juveniles. Then there is love and gentleness as in his collaboration with Breakbot and Irfane as well as on "Universal Love", a sort of low-tempo psychedelic mantra, and a direct affiliation with the first French-touch sound on "The Rollercoaster". Yuksek has been making film music for several years and producing many artists, which has allowed him to refocus his personal project on his essence, his first love, the groove. His fourth album is the perfect demonstration of this, a generous, modern and referenced dance music album, subtle, timeless and unifying, Nosso Ritmo, the rhythm that connects everyone. Also features Henriq Ch.

ANADOL Uzun Havalar LP
2020 repress. Anadol is a psychedelic synth folk project by Gözen Atila, a Turkish sound artist and photographer based in Berlin. Her third album, Uzun Havalar, is based on collective improvisations of middle eastern folk songs called "uzun hava". They turn out as rich, atmospheric synth ballads. A diverse roster of improvising musicians creates their fascinating complexity. Anadol recorded them during extensive sessions in Istanbul. You can hear drummers laughing and playing guitars, composers howling, announcements in French and screams in no language, record collectors playing oscillators, and trumpets through spacious echoes. Anadol represents Gözen Atila's liberation from a rather academic approach to electronic composition which she pursued during her music technology studies in Istanbul. She calls her education the "darkness of serious music" where she first tried to belong, then to break free with the help of lo-fi synth pop. As a producer of radio plays and an expert field recording artist she has developed a distinct sense of timing, editing and sound design. Her Anadol project walks in the footsteps of lone synth experimentalists like Bruce Haack and The Space Lady with their childlike curiosity for electronic sounds, pushing the boundaries of minimal equipment. On Uzun Havalar she translates her experimental background into these floating folk ballads. The album was originally released on tape via Kinship in 2018.

OTTO & F.S. BLUMM, ANDI Entangleland LP
F.S.Blumm enters Andi Otto's studio with a whole palette of strings and a mission to create quirky, peaceful soundscapes. The artists intertwine acoustic and electric guitars, harps, electric bass, psaltery, and cello in eleven electronica compositions ranging from neo-classical gravity ("Entangleland") to spaced-out dub jams ("Active Fault Map"). "Yukiyama" evolves in multilayered patterns braided over warm tape-noise. "Kilani" reminds of Rabih Abou Khalil's ECM recordings, with its oriental scale and a beat that counts to seven. The tunes shine most when silence takes over, when the sounds find space to unfold and decay. Far from being trivial ambient lullabies, these compositions burst with detail: Bells rattle, a kalimba resonates, and vintage synths induce their voltage into the acoustic framework. Andi Otto and F.S.Blumm have been musical collaborators in the studio as well as on stages between Berlin and Tokyo for more than a decade now, the heyday being their previous duo album The Bird And White Noise in 2014. On Entangleland, Andi Otto contributes the cello, harp, and synth recordings and takes care of the mixing. Compared to his recent releases on Multi Culti or Shika Shika, these tracks are less dancefloor oriented. The calm of this album is a flourishing environment for Otto to pluck the acoustic cello which we usually hear in a more processed way in his solo works. F.S.Blumm contributes guitar and bass recordings as well as saturated percussion echoes from his self-made spiral box. Blumm is famous for his acoustic solo productions since his early outings on Morr Music or Tomlab. He has also appeared on Pingipung a few times, for example with his album Up Up And Astray (2013) or as a Lee "Scratch" Perry collaborator with the Quasi Dub Development project PING 040CD/LP, 2014). He recorded three duo albums together with Nils Frahm and is a member of the mighty Jeff O?zdemir & Friends collective in Berlin. Entangleland sees the two artists weave together a mass of acoustic motifs, synthetic melodies, riddims, and improv jams where the magic emerges from the sum of the parts. "It's not about accompanying a cello theme with the guitar or vice versa," Andi Otto says. "Entangling sound means letting go of hierarchies, that no one is first. Our studio is not a control room, it's a place of imagination where we take things apart and make things whole."

PARMEGIANI, BERNARD Violostries LP
"Violostries" (1963/64): Premiered and recorded in April 1965 at the Royan Festival -- France, by Devy Erlih (violin) and Bernard Parmegiani (sound projection). "Violostries" represents the intersection of several musical research directions, presented as two simultaneous dialogues: composer/performer and instrument/orchestra. After a short introduction tutti very spatialized: "1. Pulsion/Miroirs": multiplied by itself, the violin is projected into the four corners of the sound space. "2. Jeu de cellules": concertante piece for violin and audio medium, the latter being made up of very tightly woven microsounds. "3. Végétal": slow and invisible development following a continuous time, resulting from an internal and permanent processing of the matter."Capture éphémère" (1967, 1988 version): "This work was composed in four tracks in 1967 for quadraphonic diffusion. Remixed in stereo in 1988. Premiered at the Studio 105 of the Maison de la Radio, Paris, May 1967. Sounds -- noises that circulate as time unfolds -- continue to exist despite our recording them. Breaths, fluttering wings: ephemeral microsonic sounds streaking space, sound scratches, landslides, bounces, vertigo of solid objects falling into an abyssal void, multiple snapshots forever frozen in their fall. As many symbols leave inside us the permanent trace of their ephemeral brushing against our ear. Someday, a desert, a sound, then never again... Somewhere, in my head and body something still resonates... resonance, what could be more ephemeral.""La Roue Ferris" (1971): Premiered at the Festival des chantiers navals, Menton, on August 26, 1971. Sound projection: Bernard Parmegiani. "La Roue Ferris" (Ferris wheel) spins, merging with its own resonance, stubbornly perpetuating its variations. It only sketches a regularly evolving movement around a constant axis. Each of its towers generates thick sonic layers that penetrate each other, producing a very fluid interweaving. The crackling of the origin eventually metamorphoses into sonic threads whose lightness recalls high-altitude clouds, cirrus clouds, haunted by the cries of swifts twirling in the warm air. The wondrous arises and dies off, leaving the listener with an illusion of duration.Cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin, November 2019. FORT, BERNARD Fractals / Brain Fever LP
"Fractals" (1981): Composed at the GMVL from December 1979 to September 1981, this work was commissioned by Fnac. Fractals are mathematical oddities that, when crossing our path, turn the smallest island into an immensity to be explored. "Fractals" is a series of short studies, all based on the same sound source. Seeking in the sound and its very logic a proposal upon which a construction is elaborated, each Fractal remains open and is a mere fragment of itself. "Fractals", music pieces sculpted in four dimensions, are vast microcosms that can only be inhabited by the mind. Each "Fractal" can be approached from several angles, far, near, etc. Some can be listened to at different speeds, forwards or backwards. "Fractals": amorphous and endless music pieces whose center is everywhere and circumference nowhere."Brain Fever" (2017): Wherever you may be in the forest of South India, the Brain Fever bird, together with the Seven Sisters, literally gets into your head. Whether it be early morning, daytime, or nighttime, amidst the stridulations of insects, its song utterly reflects Indian life: sonorous, noisy, insistent, dense, overcrowded, mobile, swarming, frantic, overheated, deprived of rest and sleep. "Brain Fever" echoes sonic images caught in the Aurovillian forest, near Pondicherry, and rich fragments of improvisations made in Lyon on analog sound synthesis or feedback devices, the kind Fort used to do in the first GMVL studios. "Brain Fever" is dedicated to Sofia Jannok, a musician and sàmi singer.Cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin, November 2019. Translations: Valérie Vivancos. Layout: Stephen O'Malley. PARKS & PHILLIP SCHULZE, BRIAN Tastaturstuecke Vol 1 CD
Tastaturstuecke Vol 1 introduces nine outstanding new compositions for church organ, harpsichord, and self-programmed software. The album comprises the first collaborative recordings of Brian Parks (Atlanta) and Phillip Schulze (Düsseldorf). The two musicians first met in the early 2000s at the famous Wesleyan University, Connecticut, where they regularly attended seminars of their teachers Alvin Lucier and Anthony Braxton. Through extended preparations for a series of live performances in Europe in 2019 (e.g. at the Approximation Festival, Düsseldorf) Parks and Schulze developed and refined a unique approach towards composition, highlighting their interest in the correlation of the invariable flawlessness of a computer versus the human performer on church organ or harpsichord. Largely written for church organ and harpsichord all pieces also correspond perfectly with the physical spaces the recordings have taken place at. The album was recorded in three different churches in Düsseldorf which have been chosen for the different qualities of their specific room acoustics. Treating slight differences in pitch, phasing, overtones and rhythm all compositions on Tastaturstuecke Vol 1 offer an evocative density and flexibility that imbue the music with an organic feel. The nine pieces range in shape and form from concise and sharp clarity such as "Ranking Studies 1-3" to the extended, exquisitely paced radiance of the eight minutes of "Partials Chrorale". "Mensuring Canon for 8 voices" is obsessively restated in constantly changing permutations whereas the metronomic "Reliefs For Ecclesial Space" sounds urgent, deep and explosive. The last piece, "Activated Progression", in particular reverses the roles between computer and the human musician. The software never messes up the phase. The human would do his best to gradually change from one state to another. Once decisions are made regarding registration and finger assignment, the human should behave like a well-fabricated wind-up toy. The two hands remain offset the entire time, and at the fastest possible speed, enact patterns of three notes (left hand) and four notes (right hand). The computer meanwhile, moves from Euclidean rhythm to Euclidean rhythm over leisurely time periods.

FUKUI, RYO Scenery LP
2020 repress; New "regular edition" on 140 gram vinyl. We Release Jazz (WRWTFWW Records' new sister-label) presents its first release, the official reissue of Ryo Fukui's highly sought-after masterpiece Scenery, originally released in 1976. Unquestionably one of the most important Japanese jazz albums ever recorded, Scenery reveals Ryo Fukui as a miraculously brilliant self-taught pianist fusing modal, bop, and cool jazz influences for a very personal, dexterous, and game-changing take on classic standards made famous by Bing Crosby and John Coltrane among others. From "It Could Happen To You" and its serene and calm intro which magically flows into a jubilant and upbeat piece, to the out-of-this-world piano solo of "Early Summer", or the incredible teamwork of "Autumn Leaves" where Fukui leads Satoshi Denpo (bass) and Yoshinori Fukui (drums) into groove heaven, every single note on the album oozes precision, confidence, and flair and every single section slides seamlessly into one another, creating a supreme and elegant blend of jazz. Often compared to McCoy Tyner or Bill Evans, Ryo Fukui was a genius in his own right, a true master of his craft whose perfectionism gave birth to some of the greatest music ever recorded. Scenery is his magnum opus and an absolute must-have. The Hokkaido wizard-pianist followed Scenery with the soulful gem Mellow Dream (WRJ 002CD/LP/LTD-LP) in 1977. He then focused on improving his live skills, often performing at Sapporo's Slowboat Jazz Club (which he co-founded with his wife Yasuko Fukui) and releasing two live albums. Ryo Fukui sadly passed away in March 2016, leaving behind a legacy of works that is sure to captivate jazz lovers for generations to come. Sourced from the original masters. LP version is mastered at half speed; 140 gram vinyl with sticker.

TAKADA, MIDORI Through The Looking Glass LP
2020 repress; LP version. Comes in a Stoughton "Tip-On" jacket; Includes printed inner sleeves. Palto Flats and We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present the highly-anticipated reissue of Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's sought after and timeless ambient/minimal album Through The Looking Glass, originally released in 1983 by RCA Japan. Considered a holy grail of Japanese music by many, Through The Looking Glass is Midori Takada's first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience. Midori Takada is a composer, multi-percussionist, and theater artist renowned in Japanese vanguard circles. Midori has released two solo albums: Through The Looking Glass and Tree Of Life (1999) and wrote music for Tadashi Suzuki's theater plays. Her hypnotic, minimalist music is based in the concept of coherence between sound and the human body. She performs solo on marimba and other percussion instruments. She debuted on the scene of Berlin Philharmonic, performing with the RIAS Symphonie-Orchester Berlin just after graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1974. She continued her career with solo concerts in Japan and abroad. In the 1980s, Midori began to explore the traditional music of Asia and Africa. Her fascination resulted in joint projects with Kakraba Lobi from Ghana, Lamine Konte from Senegal, Farafina Band from Burkina Faso, and Korean musicians: zither player Chi Seong-Ja, flute player Won-Il, and saxophone player Kang Tae-Hwan. She also led Mkwaju Ensemble's innovative percussion project and still performs with free-jazz band Ton-Klami with Kang Tae-Hwan and jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh. Takada's compositions have a remarkable way of affecting the imagination. Her minimalist, contemplative music is filled with the concept of infinity and reminds us of a moon voyage, falling stars, a journey into the ocean, or a walk in the garden. The trans melodies, initially simple, begin to loop and splinter, their rhythm breaking and thickening, slowly drawing the listener into another reality. This fully licensed reissue comes with extensive liner notes.
