BLACK WATCH, THE Brilliant Failures CD
John Andrew Fredrick has written and released seventeen The Black Watch albums, creating sparkling, literate, jangly-distorted indie rock since the LA band's inception in 1988 (as well as four works of comedic literary fiction and one book on the early films of Wes Anderson). For this record, Fredrick had the idea of letting producer-friends Scott Campbell, Rob Campanella, (producer for The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Beachwood Sparks, Dead Meadow), and Andy Creighton be his band and record the album. "I have had, I think, too much control, musically speaking, in the past," Fredrick says, "and the thought of experimenting this way was really thrilling." The result was far from a failure, in fact this approach may have yielded The Black Watch's best album in years. CD version comes in a gatefold sleeve.

ERICKSON, ROKY Clear Night For Love LP
2020 repress. Alternative Fox present a reissue of Roky Erickson's Clear Night For Love, originally released in 1985. Dallas-born Roger Kynard Erickson, better known as Roky Erickson, is a legend of psychedelic music and culture. Playing piano at five years old and guitar at ten, he dropped out of high school in Austin shortly before graduating, since the school dress code demanded short hair. In 1965, his group, The Spades, made an impact with "We Sell Soul" and the following year, The 13th Floor Elevators burst onto the scene with debut album The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators (1966), but the band's non-conformist attitude and open endorsement of drugs, such as marijuana and LSD, put them in repeated conflict with the authorities. Then, in 1968, during a performance at the San Antonio edition of the World's Fair, known as HemisFare, Erickson began speaking incomprehensible nonsense on stage, leading to a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia and confinement in a Houston psychiatric hospital, where he was forcibly given electroshock therapy. The following year, after being busted with a single joint, Erickson pleaded not guilty by means of insanity, leading to a three-year stay in Rusk State Hospital, with further electroshock and Thorazine treatments. Following his release Erickson formed a group initially called Bleib Alien, which evidenced a more hard-rock orientation, later renamed The Aliens, though Erickson was also working with Austin's The Explosives in the same era. Alien's material produced by Stu Cook of Creedence Clearwater Rival was issued by CBS and an independent, 415 Records. Then, in the early 1980s, Erickson became fixated with junk mail and unsolicited letters, writing to lawyers and celebrity figures on a regular basis; in 1985, solo mini-LP Clear Night For Love was produced at Music Tracks in Austin by bassist/guitarist Speedy Sparks, with former Joe "King" Carrasco and Delbert McClinton drummer, Ernie Durawa, plus Supernatural Family Band alumnus John Reed on guitar. Released by France's New Rose label in small numbers, the release found Erickson back in semi-psychedelic/country rock mode on opening track "You Don't Love Me Yet", the plaintive "Starry Eyes", and the anthem-like title track, while "The Haunt" is more in swamp/horror rock vein and "Don't Slander Me" has heavy blues leanings.

MINAIS B Quiet Bloom LP
Quiet Bloom is the second full-length album by Copenhagen composer Minais B. Quiet Bloom describes the return to life after losing a loved one. As a treatment for his grief, Minais B explores the solemnness of spiritual music, rituals and ceremonial togetherness. The album takes you in and out of the multi-colored feelings embedded in the process of grieving; threads of sadness, emptiness, crisis, but also lighter playful and even joyful passages dominate the album. The latter take form as alert and sometimes ecstatic arpeggios, as on the opening track "Where We Meet" and later on "Spirit of Miiyo"; tracks that create sonic spaces for celebrations beyond bodily life. The solemnness of the organ is a recurring element, and as the organ breathes, it transforms from virtual Hammond organs to digital synths and again into real church organs like on the albums two "Intermezzos". This exchange between members of the organ family; from the "father of synths", from "real" to "fake" is equal and respectful, as is the treatment of the different phases of grief and gradual return to the surface that Quiet Bloom represents. Love ends up being the successor of emotions, making Quiet Bloom an inspiring journey through the apparent conflicts of the heart and mind -- showing a way of using loss to create something new -- giving the world something back.

Blurring the lines between introspective garage, curve-balling kosmiche, and full-blown indie rock worship, the band, who comprise four multi-instrumentalists, navigate stone-cold classics: epilepsy, anxiety, depression, social conscience, and identity.

O YUKI CONJUGATE Peyote LP
One of the all-time fantastic masterpieces of rhythmic ambient, an absolute must-own for any fan of the genre. Peyote is a musical trip well worth taking. Originally released in 1991 on CD and now released on vinyl for the first time. O Yuki Conjugate (OYC) are an English post-industrial/ambient musical group founded in 1982 in Nottingham by Roger Horberry and Andrew Hulme and still -- intermittently -- active today. Originally inspired by the spirit and sound of post-punk, they soon started pioneering their own brand of ambient at a time (early '80s) when few people were interested in such a low-key approach. Their music has been variously described as "ambient", "fourth world", and "dark wave"; the band prefer to call it "dirty ambient".

EASTMAN, JULIUS Crazy Nigger LP
Limited restock, last copies. It's little wonder that Julius Eastman (who died in 1990 under unexplained circumstances), remained the supreme underground composer. He was Afro-American and gay, a composer who rocked the cerebral world of process music with his explosions of free improvisation. Crazy Nigger is the first time any of Eastman's music has been available on vinyl, and is one of three extended pieces for four pianos, along with Gay Guerrilla and Evil Nigger, written and performed around 1980. All three works generate their epic soundscapes through adamantly restated patterns and interlocking canons, not fragmenting, but preaching urgent truths. To quote the brilliant Mary Jane Leach liners: "He wrote what can be categorized as minimal music, but also wrote 'post-minimal' music -- before minimal music was fully established." His pieces straddle both styles of minimal music; rhythmic/pulse-driven music (Steve Reich and Philip Glass) and spectral drone music (La Monte Young and Phill Niblock). There is a flexibility that lends an organic feel to his music, a muscularity missing in a lot of other music from that time; with the re-emergence of this powerful music, a missing gap in the history of contemporary music has been filled. Not released commercially upon their recording, they were instead shared on cassettes, copied and passed from one admirer to another. Unlike today's instant access to music, at that time each new copy represented a time commitment, since it took as long to copy as its playing time, while also removing itself further from the original recording with a resultant deterioration in sound quality. The three pieces occupy a high point in Eastman's oeuvre, the culmination of his mature style. Crazy Nigger is a sprawling sonic study, the last section exploring canonic form both harmonically and rhythmically, using the same process as James Tenney's Spectral Canon, but notated in a more intuitive way. Offering extensive liner notes by Leach and Bradford Bailey, this is a seminal work by one of the most important, but neglected, American composers of the 1970s and '80s, returning to the light once more. Not only is Crazy Nigger an entire rethinking of minimalism, but it ferociously blows the doors of what classical music can be seen to be. Mastering by Giuseppe Ielasi. Includes printed inner sleeve housing a Nagaoka anti-static record sleeve, plus obi-style original insert in a fold-out outer sleeve. 180 gram, color vinyl.

EASTMAN, JULIUS Evil Nigger/Gay Guerrilla LP
Limited restock, last copies. Julius Eastman's seminal classics are now reissued on vinyl for the first time ever. Gay Guerrilla and Evil Nigger, both composed in 1979 with a third work Crazy Nigger, make up what Eastman called The Nigger Series. Some of the most challenging and beautiful works composed for piano during their era, they double as a window into the intricate thought process and contentiousness of their creator. When the composer was asked to perform the series at Northwestern University in 1980, due to protests by African American students, their titles were censored in the event's program. His response was a flamboyant foreshadowing of the sentiments toward bigoted language which later arose within hip-hop culture -- to publicly take back these words, assert ownership of them, and deploy their power for positive change. What Eastman was early to recognize, was that there is a fundamental difference in what happens when these words are spoken by white people toward people of color, and when people of color deploy them toward a white audience. The balance of power shifts. Eastman's audience was largely heterosexual and white. He knew exactly what he was doing, and to whom he spoke. The object in your hands contains some of the most striking and important music composed during the later decades of the 20th century -- music which remained lost and unheard for years, not because of what it is, but because of who its composer was. It is music, doubling as the voice of a man, which, because it refused to be oppressed, was suppressed or ignored. Eastman's work is a conscious act of intervention, plowing into a context defined by heterosexual whiteness, attacking its unjust demands from within. It is Christ-like -- metaphor and beauty which is impossible to separate from the evils of the world. It is a music which carries the body of a man. As it speaks to our hearts, as it offers a glimpse of the freedoms implied by the sublime, a shackle is bound -- a consciousness of our complicity with unforgivable sin. Mastering by Giuseppe Ielasi. Includes printed inner sleeve housing a Nagaoka anti-static record sleeve, plus an original insert that functions as obi; Housed in a fold-out outer sleeve. 180 gram, color vinyl.

COOPER, MIKE Tropical Gothic 2CD
Double-CD version of Mike Cooper's now classic 2018 release Tropical Gothic -- now released with a bonus live performance recorded at London's Café Oto. On Tropical Gothic, Mike Cooper studies different approaches to his method of uniting guitar and field recordings into a constant stream of sound, where he delivers chaos and melody -- not necessarily in that order. A series of shorter pieces open the album. Each of them offering a myriad of images and sensations, between the enigmatic and terror ("The Pit"), joy, happiness, and freedom ("Running Naked"), or pure contemplation ("Onibaba"). The album closes with its 18th minute magical piece "Lelong & Gods Of Bali". A mix of ambient exotica music, silent film soundtrack, and distorted rhythms that dance around Mike's guitar. It keeps reinventing and transforming itself throughout those eighteen minutes, summing up the dexterity and muscle of Mike Cooper's music of the last two decades. Tropical Gothic - Live At Cafe Oto was performed as a live improvised version of Mike's release of the same name. Joined on stage by Clive Bell and Sylvia Hallet and performed alongside three of Mike's videos -- "Ko Lanta", "Walking In Ubin", and a mash up containing excerpts from some of Mike's favorite "tropical gothic" films -- Onibaba (1964), Opera Jawa (2006), Kwaidan (1964), Tabu (2012), and White Shadows In The South Seas (1928). Both Clive and Sylvia play an array of Asian and "exotic" instruments; both are improvisers and have been playing together on and off over many years. Sylvia had collaborated with David Toop on his opera Star Shaped Biscuit, a work that might also be considered tropical gothic and Clive Bell, an international traveler, writer, and expert player of the Japanese shakuhachi flute, as well as other Asian blown instruments, is very familiar with Mike Cooper's musical excursions into ambient/electronic/exotica. Personnel: Mike Cooper - lap steel guitar, iPhone, Zoom sampletrack, Kaos Pad, Mini Kaos Pad, Mini Disc, Pitch Shifter Delay, Video; Sylvia Hallett - violin, bowed bicycle wheel, saw, sawn-off lampshade, jaws harp, mbira, delay pedal, pitch shift pedal, looper pedal; Clive Bell - shinobue, shakuhachi, khene, pi saw flute, Cretan pipes. Recorded Live by James Dunn at Cafe Oto on September 28th, 2018. Disc 1 mastered by Rashad Becker. Disc 2 mastered by Emmet O'Donnel.

GRIMAUD, DOMINIQUE 19 Feedbacks LP
Dominique Grimaud makes you listen to the The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and many more artists from the 1960s, like you never hear before. The title says it all: 19 Feedbacks. French multi-instrumentalist and sound-experimentalist Dominique Grimaud dives into his adolescence and the 1960s, when he discovered music that he could identify with and that would stay with him for his whole life. But 19 Feedbacks it's not just about memories or music, it's about feedback. The beginning of the use of feedback on pop and rock songs throughout that decade and beyond. It helps -- of course it helps -- that Dominique feels and knows what he's talking about. He lived those years. He knows the energy and the momentum and the historical breakthroughs that were made every time a rock band pushed the boundaries of commercial approval. He uses samples of feedbacks from that era and builds beautifully enigmatic sound-pieces around them. Some of those samples/feedbacks will be very recognizable. It's not worth telling because it will spoil the experience of listening and dive into 19 Feedbacks. It's better if the listener isn't expecting them and enjoy the ways Dominique explores them and reintegrate them into modern experimental music. Although it carries that experimental side, 19 Feedbacks normally feels as a freeform library music. Tracks like "Out Of The Sand" and "Green And Blue" carry a beautiful ambiguity of handcrafted electronic sounds thought for an electronic library of sound, to be or not to be used for a movie, radio or television. While others, like "Soft Voice" or "18 Tides" dwell along the ambient spectrum. Some tracks carry a more electronic momentum. Dominique adapts the 19 Feedbacks to fit different styles and he wasn't trapped in the gimmick side of working around such specific samples. It's a brave new world of sound escapades and sonic ventures. You never thought you would hear the Beatles, Stones, Captain Beefheart or Pink Floyd sound like this. All songs by Dominique Grimaud. Artwork by Evan Crankshaw. Vinyl cut at Dubplates & Mastering Berlin.

ERIK NERVOUS AND THE BETA BLOCKERS Erik Nervous and the Beta Blockers LP
Classic Midwest punk Devo influence, but with a "new-new wave" sound that's been coming out of California and Saint Louis. If you heard Erik Nervous's mighty 2018 collection Assorted Anxieties, you probably thought you had his sound pegged. Bruce Gilbert power chords, rickety garage skronk, and a willful primitivism that starts with a drum machine and ends with a heroically scuffed approach to melody -- it all adds up to something pretty irresistible, of course, but what if there was more to come? This time Erik's joined by The Beta Blockers, and the sound they concoct together is utterly magical. OK, when this self-titled LP comes rattling out of the gate with 90-second barnstormer "Violent Dreams", you may suspect it's just an amplified version of the old stuff, albeit with full band, but trust me: you ain't seen nuthin' yet. "Gravure" sees 'em tinkering with an angular skronk-funk that tilts an ear towards yer Minutemen, yer Bogsheds, yer Andy Gills (while ensuring both feet are firmly cemented to as many dumbass hardcore punk records as possible). The thoroughly unexpected "Blasted Heath" brings synths to the foreground in masterly fashion, while the mutant dub of "Want To Not Wanna" feels like a dust-up in a muddy puddle with an ashen-faced Pere Ubu. It's still recognizably the work of Erik Hart (for that is his true name), only distorted and further frayed at the edges. It's the sort of snappily smart sidestep you wish more bands would be willing to take, while remaining within touching distance from their roots. Best of all, it places the Michigan-based wonder alongside fellow punk explorers like Uranium Club; utterly aware of punk/hardcore/post-punk/whatever's past and its limitations, but determined to find the lesser-explored gaps that lie between and make them his own. Make no mistake, this is a mighty record.

Kanaan from Oslo, Norway is back with their second album in 2020. Following the impromptu Odense Sessions with Causa Sui guitarist Jonas Munk released in February (EPR 057LP, 2020), Double Sun is a different beast all together: Treading the same path as their 2018 debut Windborne (EPR 050CD/LP, 2018), Double Sun is a studio effort in the best sense of the word. Perfectly balanced on the edge of dynamic improv, throbbing beats sizzled in scorching fuzz and topped off with deeply layered soundscapes. This album sees Kanaan reach a new plateau. Kanaan presents a unique perspective to psychedelic rock, painting with a wide palette that includes jazz and post-rock. Double Sun devotes as much energy to sonic color as it does to groove and energy. The spirit of experimentation is everywhere: From the savory, pastoral sounds of opening track "Worlds Together", to the soaring exploratory paths of the two-part title track. In the creative process, Kanaan dived deep into the possibilities of the studio, adding intricate layers and twists and turns to these tunes: acoustic guitars, percussions, and synthesizers embrace and enhance the Norwegian modern-day version of a power-trio.

CAPITOL K Birdtrapper LP
Kristian Craig Robinson, aka Capitol K, is a multi-instrumentalist and record producer with a long history in London's most interesting under-the-radar music places and spaces. With a musical story like his, one can expect side streams. His new record, Birdtrapper, is "the sound of an initiation rave in a utopian hidden village", and his latest exploration of Mediterranean audio mythos following on from Goatherder (FAI 014LP, 2018). The six track mini-album was similarly formed from ritualistic improvisations performed in Malta (where Capitol K was born), using home-made flutes, reed pipe, bamboo percussion, drum machine, bass guitar, but this time features a wider use of synthesizers, with the alternative dance floor in mind. Where Goatherder was an awakening of genetic primitivism, Birdtrapper is an evocation of sonic bird callers, proto-rave abandon, ambient resonance, and an ecstatic captive state, along with the previous work's visions of hunters, temples and scrub land music. Goatherder caused a quiet kind of quake and was beloved by The Quietus, BBCR3, and 6Music. For the last seven years, K has been behind the consoles at the heavily influential Total Refreshment Centre, recording and mixing records with the likes of Trash Kit, The Comet Is Coming, Rozi Plain, Alabaster DePlume, Dry Cleaning, Flamingods, Cykada, Ibibio Sound Machine, BAS JAN, and John Johanna. It's not just recording; he's also become an influential, if understated, mentor to a new wave of producers and bands. His experience in studio environments is long and storied, including stints at Studio Plateaux on an island in the middle of the Thames and in the Royal Symphonia's squatted rehearsal rooms. Capitol K has released seven albums and the Birdtrapper follows a legacy of influential releases on early 2000s electronica labels including Planet Mu and XL. Aside from this he also runs the record label Faith & Industry. It's a friends and family, love not money affair and he has released music by Champagne Dub, John Johanna, Super Best Friends Club, Blue House, and Clémentine March. Clear vinyl.

CHAINO AND HIS AFRICAN PERCUSSION SAFARI Jungle Echoes LP
Fantôme Phonographique present a reissue of Chaino And His African Percussion Safari's Jungle Echoes, originally released in 1959. The African American bongo player known as Chaino released a series of sublime exotica albums during the 1950s, based around themes of "savage Africa," supposed tribal mating rituals, voodoo practices, and other concepts of exotica excess. Born Leon Johnson in Philadelphia in 1929, he was raised on the south side of Chicago and began making a name for himself as a bongo player on the Chitlin Circuit of nightclubs catering to a black clientele. In 1957, he was discovered by the nightclub singer and producer Kirby Allan (AKA Sidney Allen Pitmann), who travelled extensively in African earlier in the decade and who was seeking someone that could emulate the ceremonial rhythms he encountered in Kenya and the Gold Coast. In a peculiar marketing strategy, Allan recast Johnson as Chaino, "an orphan from a lost tribe in Africa who was taken in by missionaries and brought to the US." Together they produced eight albums, typically with Johnson playing every instrument himself, with added shouts, whelps and pseudo-African language. Jungle Echoes, first issued in 1959 on the Hollywood-based Omega Disc, is a thoroughly mesmerizing example of Chaino's over-the-top brilliance.

KALSOUM, OM La Ya Habiby LP
Fantôme Phonographique present a reissue of Om Kalsoum's La Ya Habiby, originally released in 1963. A titan of middle eastern music, the contralto singer Om Kalsoum (or, Umm Kulthum) was hailed as "The Voice of Egypt" or "Egypt's Fourth Pyramid," and as she reportedly sold over 80 million records worldwide during her lifetime, she is one of the most popular singers of all time. Born in a small village in the Nile Delta, either in the late 1890s or the early 1900s, she joined her father's family group at an early age and as a teenager, was taught classical Arab music by singer Mohamed Abo Al-Ela. The composer Zakariyya Ahmad convinced her to move to Cairo in the early 1920s, where the composer and oud player Mohamed El Qasabgi introduced her to the Arabic Theatre Palace, where she enjoyed her first taste of success, leading to her breakthrough in the early 1930s and subsequent tours of the middle east; appearances in local films and the regular broadcasts of her live concerts allowed her to surpass her rivals. At home, her peak period is seen as the 1940s and '50s, yet she continued to record enthralling work in the '60s and '70s, including "La Ya Habiby," an epic song of heartache, composed by Riad El Sombati, with lyrics by Abdelfatah Moustapha, first recorded in 1963. Kalsoum has since been cited as an influence by Bob Dylan, Robert Plant, Bono, and Jah Wobble, among many others.

TWO MUCH The Abstract Horse LP
"An incredible, primitive and ecstatic teenage garage rock explosion from the suburbs of 1968 Orlando, Florida. With an instrumental line-up consisting of just guitar and drums, this is a version of rock & roll as raw and naked as only a duo can manage. Think Half Japanese, the Work Dogs, the Bassholes and so on -- Two Much are cut from the same wicked cloth. I remember a cassette of some of this material circulating around sub-underground Boston back in the 1980s. Might have been around the time Robin Amos's post-Girls band, Shut Up (with Glenn Jones), was finishing up their run. Robin was a well-known player on the scene both as a musician and a recordist, and people were jazzed to check out his teenaged roots. But the pummeling racket created by this two-man demolition squad -- with Robin on drums and his buddy, John Chadwick, on guitar and vocals -- was way too much for the squares to handle. None of the era's hep new wave labels knew what to do with the tapes either, so back into storage they went. But Robin was pleased with the results of the Girls' Punk-Dada-Pulchritude LP (FTR 220LP, 2012), and a year or so ago he asked if we'd be up for giving the tapes a listen. My faulty memory banks recalled a band that mostly did covers (their versions of 'Break on Through' and 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' are both stuck deep in my brain.) But Robin assured us that Two Much did mostly originals, and lo and behold -- when the files arrived they were rich with crazy tunes the pair had written themselves between the ages of 10-12 (Johnny) and 12-14 (Robin). Amazing! Many bands then only had one 'original,' and it was usually a dull blues readymade. Two Much had tons of short tracks that spoke directly to the heart of junior high desire, and also managed to create a distorted, 6+ minute, political opus called, 'State of the Union '68.' That track is so far from what you'd expect that it kinda DESTROYS in all imaginable ways. Plus, in 'Who Says,' you get to enjoy the immense pleasure of hearing a 12-year old sing, 'Most of my life I've been working/Slaving my life away/Working in the king's mine fields.' Insane! Two Much's one session was recorded by Robin's dad, in their living room, right before John Chadwick and his family moved from Florida to California. Sadly, John and Robin fell out of touch over the years, but the sound of Two Much is an eternal beacon of teenage truth & justice. Burning in the dark suburban night of pre-Disney Orlando. We should all have back pages like this!" --Byron Coley, 2020 Edition of 200.

BUSHPILOT 21st Century Breakdown/Lost Girls 7"
God Unknown Records announce a campaign of releasing the lost recordings of '90s post-rockers Bushpilot in 2020. "these raw and distinctly krautrock and Fall-inspired sounds of Bushpilot feel like a hidden history of what could have been for the era and the direct influence of Malcolm Mooney-era Can is instantly recognisable." --The Quietus. "21st Century Breakdown" is journey through a krautrock inspired, taut and rhythmic landscape influenced and shaped by Can, Talk Talk, Neu!, Slint, and Talking Heads. The tracks have been lovingly re-edited and post-produced by studio legend Richard Formby (Ghostpoet, Wild Beasts, Darkstar, and a later member of Bushpilot), together with vocalist Ross Holloway. Bushpilot arrived at the avant-garde of the Leeds' punk and indie scene in 1993 with Holloway, Karl Berlin (bass), and Daren Pickles (guitar), formerly of epic noise architects Purple Eternal, playing alongside the more melodic Adrian Gans (guitar) and bolstered by the power of Phil Leigh on drums (previously of Spectral Alice, now founder and owner of Norman Records).

RADIGUE, ELIANE Transamorem - Transmortem CD
2020 restock. "Transamorem - Transmortem was premiered on March 9, 1974 at The Kitchen in NYC, where the music programmer at the time was Rhys Chatham - this was right before his guitar phase. During this period, Transamorem - Transmortem was presented along with other compositions by Eliane Radigue in a linear mode of listening, although the piece had originally been conceived, during its composition, as a sound installation. Of course, both modes of listening are possible, and each works marvelously in its own way."

ALICE BAG Sister Dynamite CD
"On her new album Sister Dynamite, L.A. punk icon Alice Bag confronts some of the most pervasive problems troubling the world today: unchecked privilege and willful ignorance, systemic inequality and fragile masculinity. Her third solo effort and first release for In The Red Records, the album also offers an unbridled celebration of community and the undeniable power in embracing one's own truth. In her impassioned push for freedom of all kinds, Bag endlessly transmits a raw and exhilarating energy, ultimately transforming each song into a much-needed antidote to numbness or despair. The follow-up to 2018's Blueprint -- named one of the best albums of the year by NPR Music -- Sister Dynamite marks a thrilling return to the full-throttle punk that Bag pioneered with her legendary first-wave punk band, The Bags. With its breakneck velocity and galvanizing melodies, the album's kinetic sound was partly inspired by Bag's work in producing the latest record by Chicana punk band Fea. 'All their songs are rockers, and it made me want to make an album that's upbeat all the way through,' she says. To achieve that force-of-nature intensity, Bag teamed up with her core group of musicians, including guitarist Sharif Dumani and bassist David O. Jones. Co-produced by Bag and her longtime collaborator Lysa Flores (who plays rhythm guitar and sings backing vocals on several songs), Sister Dynamite finds Candace P.K. Hansen and Rikki 'Styxx' Watson trading off on drums, each lending her distinct musicality to the album's potent rhythms. Throughout Sister Dynamite, Bag reveals her incredible ability to turn nuanced political statement into impossibly catchy punk songs. Raised in East Los Angeles, she first discovered her facility with the grammar of punk upon co-founding The Bags as a teenager in the late '70s (an endeavor that saw her featured in Penelope Spheeris's seminal punk documentary, The Decline Of Western Civilization). Along with playing in a series of groundbreaking bands over the years (including Castration Squad, Cholita, and Las Tres), Bag has devoted much of the past few decades to her work as an educator, activist, feminist archivist, and author of two acclaimed books: her 2011 memoir Violence Girl (now required reading in gender and musicology courses throughout the country) and 2015's Pipe Bomb For The Soul (a self-published title based on her experiences volunteering in postrevolutionary Nicaragua)."

VIBRATION BLACK FINGER Can You See What I'm Trying to Say CD
Lascelle "Lascelles" Gordon -- the driving force behind Vibration Black Finger -- astonishes yet again with a magnificent second album. Once more his inspiration is drawn from the obscure spiritual jazz collectives of the 1970s where he employs a vast array of like-minded collaborators to create a listening experience infused with an ever-present undercurrent of personal expression and cultural empowerment that's as enriched with ideas as it is progressive in its form. Having earned his chops as founding member of the Brand New Heavies, Campag Velocet, and Heliocentric World, Lascelle's latest album Can You See What I'm Trying to Say bursts with energy and vivid contrasts, flowing effortlessly between beat-laden grooves, oscillating improvisations, soulful recitations, audio verité, and moody atmospherics. The album drops like a post-hip-hop reimagining of foundational genres, with a prayer to the future. "Can You See What I'm Trying to Say" is a quote from Marion Brown, the great alto saxophonist's explains Gordon. "The album was put together over the last three years, not in the conventional way of going into the recording studio with musicians, but starting from ideas I had on various formats (cassettes, mini disc, DATs & reel to reel). I also used field recordings. I did a lot of home recording with long time musical friends Ben Cowen and Diana Gutkind, some of them going back 20 years. The voices of my nieces (heard on 'Law Of The Universe') were recorded 25 years ago. 'Only In A Dream' and 'Empty Streets' are the only songs that were recorded live in the studio. "Empty Streets"opens the album, with vocalist Ebony Rose turning in a thoroughly haunting vocal performance. Following "Empty Streets", some instrumental interludes segue into a dimensional drift of beats, space synths, horns, and electronics; there's a vocal reprise of "Acting For Liberation", sung with gusto by Maggie Nichols, and then there's the album's momentous finale, "Only In A Dream", which takes off as an ominous drone before a delicious bassline from the late Ken Kambayashi transforms it into an intense, soaring epic which finally descends onto another world. In a career spanning several decades, Lascelle Gordon remains an omnivorous musical force, whether as DJ, collaborator, or radio broadcaster. As amply demonstrated on Can You See What I'm Trying to Say, he refuses to rest on his laurels and continues to impress with music that is as rich, vital, and contemporary as anything he's done before.

SUBOTNICK, MORTON Silver Apples of the Moon LP
2020 repress. As composer, musician and initiator of the San Francisco Tape Music Center which he cofounded with Pauline Oliveros and Ramon Sender in 1961, Morton Subotnick (born 1933) has propelled the progress of electronic music in several significant ways. From 1963 on he worked with Don Buchla on the development of the early synthesizer Buchla Series 100 before moving to New York where the artist-in-residence at the newly established Tisch School of the Arts of New York University was enabled to set up his own studio. That's where Subotnick's most popular work Silver Apples of the Moon was commissioned by DECCA as the first electronic composition ever that was especially conceived for a vinyl release (in opposition to the common practice of performing live). Until the current day, this seminal album has not lost its visionary power and has long been considered one of the essential milestones in electronic music with a great impact on later generations of artists, starting from the cult formation Silver Apples to Laika, who titled their debut Silver Apples of the Moon, too. Now for the first time since its original 1967 release, Subotnick's masterpiece (which was selected for the Library of Congress in 2009) has finally been made available on vinyl at last: a new audiophile 180 gram LP that was carefully remastered for vinyl.

ALIZADEH, SABA Scattered Memories LP
2020 repress. On his debut album Scattered Memories, the composer, musician, and true master on the Iranian spike fiddle kamancheh Saba Alizadeh blends his instrumental virtuosity with spherical electronics, samples of Persian music instruments and field recordings from his hometown Tehran. Born in Tehran in 1983 as son of the world-renowned tar and setar virtuoso Hossein Alizadeh, Saba Alizadeh studied the Iranian spike fiddle with Saeed Farajpoury and Keyhan Kalhor, plus photography and later experimental sound art with Mark Trayle at the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles. His musical activities that lead him all around the globe for performances (amongst others, at Carnegie Hall) branch into two different areas: on the one side Alizadeh is a highly-reputed virtuoso on his traditional instrument, on the other he likes to approach music from a more experimental/technological aspect in his electronic/electro-acoustic pieces. This not being enough, he founded Noise Works in 2014, a platform and label for organizing experimental concerts and for the transfer of knowledge of music technologies among young Iranian musicians which makes him a central figure at the forefront of the current, very vivid Persian music scene that gained a lot of attention through artists like Siavash Amini, Porya Hatami, and of course Sote who included a track by Alizadeh on the compilation Girih: Iranian Sound Artists (2018) that he had curated. In 2018, Alizadeh self-released his debut Scattered Memories on CD in Iran which now, in a reworked version, sees its deserved worldwide release on vinyl. Over the course of ten tracks, Alizadeh melts his two musical worlds into one: tradition meets modernism, eastern sounds meet western production, folklore meets contemporary electronics. An album that will appeal to an open-minded "world music" audience as well as fans of current streams like ambient or drone in its most subtle forms. 180 gram vinyl; Includes download code.

MAXIMIN, BERANGERE Land of Waves 2LP
On her sixth album, the French electroacoustic composer Bérangère Maximin explores the idea of a kaleidoscopic world -- a sonic aggregation of living creatures, plants, minerals, nature, and buildings, using various sound objects, small percussions, synths, electric guitar, voice, and electronics. Working out of her private studio since 2008, Bérangère Maximin has developed her own approach to sound art and electronic music, composing dense, immersive pieces with immediate impact. On five albums -- released to critical acclaim on Tzadik, Sub Rosa, Crammed Discs, and Craig Leon's Atlas Realisations label -- she has revealed a taste for mixing disparate sounds together with a sense of detail, effusive, lyrical playings with the digital material and tight nuanced writing. Bérangère Maximin's music engages the listener in consideration of space and textures, the sound ambivalence and its independence from its original source being at the center of her work. During her career, the French composer has obtained commissions and residencies in National Music Research Centres such as Paris's Ina-GRM, Stockholm's EMS and received a grant from the "Villa Medicis Hors Les Murs" program in New York City (Cultures France). She has performed in notable festivals, venues and concert halls from Paris's Présences Electronique festival, London's Hayward gallery, NYC's Roulette, Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie's e-Phil series to major international festivals in Eastern Europe. Beside her solo performances, she also regularly shares the stage in duo with Fred Frith. Land of Waves: three words evoking territories of plains and curves connected with each other by canals, footpaths, tunnels. The four parts of the album lead the listener into a hybrid land where the jungle meets the city -- a succession of reliefs, surfaces, textures, layers create a large mosaic as if on a concrete wall which seems solid and definitive but is in fact penetrable, alterable. For Land of Waves, Bérangère Maximin took inspiration from recordings she did in various city parks, abandoned properties and limits with the suburbs during her travels in Europe, the diversity of sources, the variations of events and the contrasts between day and night they offered, and reinterpreted them in the studio. 180 gram vinyl, double LP; includes download code.

SPAZA Spaza LP
2020 repress. An entirely improvised live album recorded in one take in the inner city of Johannesburg, featuring some of the city's finest experimental musicians, namely Siya Makuzeni (vocals, FX, trombone), Nosisi Ngakane (vocals), Joao Orecchia (synthesizers, electronics), Waldo Alexander (electric violin with FX pedal), Gontse Makene (percussion), and Ariel Zamonsky (upright bass). In the context of this improvised album, the term "spaza" not only refers to the name of the outdoor gallery in Troyeville, Johannesburg where this project was recorded in the autumn of 2015. No way. In South Africa, "spaza" comes heavy with meaning. It could refer to an informal neighborhood store usually attached to someone's house, operating out of a shack or a repurposed shipping container. It has come to signify an entrepreneurship spirit, especially in South Africa's black townships where restrictions to business ownership meant that only a few could attain that privileged societal status of legitimate business owner. But in contemporary South Africa, spazas are also contested territories, given continental migratory patterns that have seen the country attract millions of political migrants against the backdrop of the remaining economic and spatial legacy of apartheid. Spazas have emerged as sites of war, bloodshed, wailing, and despair as financially disempowered South Africans routinely mete out their frustrations on those spaza store owners that they consider "foreigners" and "outsiders". But spaza can mean something else entirely. Perhaps obliquely, there are musical references to be grasped at. Spaza, the term, the recording, and the location, evokes a spirit of musical independence, a looseness, a jam session, a collaboration, a coming together of great minds at the corner to shoot the breeze, or let off a seriously considered prognosis. In this sense, Spaza, the album, is a conceptual coalescence of space, the body politic and an approach to music making. Helmed by the arbiters of spontaneity, Mushroom Hour Half Hour, this loping, expansive recording brings together musicians already adept at creating on the fly and playing in unlikely set-ups with their instruments of choice. Spaza is at once opaque, direct and an unyielding morass of joy melding with pain, furtiveness caressing boldness. This could be the sound of the city turned inside out, ruminating on its troubled history and uncertain future, the sound of celebration and pensiveness. The results, while shaped in the milieu that is Johannesburg, are that of continental astral travel, a sonic reading of the city's dreamscape.

EASTMAN, JULIUS Unjust Malaise 3CD
Restocked. "This three-disc set marks the first appearance on disc of the music of the African-American composer Julius Eastman (1940-1990), who died fourteen years ago under unexplained circumstances and whose musical legacy was thought lost. This comprehensive and definitive document, which comprises almost all of Eastman's signature works, will undoubtedly be a revelation for those who have thus far been unable to hear his work. In his book American Music in the Twentieth Century, composer/author Kyle Gann briefly sums up Eastman's work and its importance: 'Born in New York, he graduated from the Curtis Institute in composition and was discovered by Lukas Foss, who conducted his music, including Stay On It (1973), one of the first works to introduce pop tonal progressions and free improvisation in an art context... Applying minimalism's additive process to the building of sections, he developed a composing technique he called 'organic music,' a cumulatively overlapping process in which each section of a work contains, simultaneously, all the sections which preceded it. The pieces he wrote in this style often had intentionally provocative titles intended to reinterpret the minorities Eastman belonged to in a positive light: for example, Evil Nigger, Crazy Nigger, and Gay Guerrilla (all circa 1980). These three pieces, all scored for multiple pianos, build up immense emotive power through the incessant repetition of rhythmic figures.' Eastman was an energizing underground figure, one whose forms are clear, whose methods were powerful and persuasive, and whose thinking was supremely musical. His works show different routes minimalism might have taken, and perhaps some of those will now be followed up. This set of discs is a bold beginning to restoring to history the works of one of the most important members of the first post-minimalist generation."

BECKER, JOHN J. Soundpieces 1-7 2CD
"John J. Becker (1886-1961) is the least known of a group of composers who, by reputation, became known as 'the American Five,' analogous to the better-known 'Russian Five' or 'French Six.' Becker's cohorts consisted of Carl Ruggles, Henry Cowell, Wallingford Riegger, and Charles Ives. Ives, born 1874, was the oldest of the group and Cowell, born 1897, was the youngest, and in the 1920s and '30s they were known as the most radical and dissonant of American composers. Becker could be briefly summarized as a confluence of dissonance and Catholicism. He became known as one of the leading proponents of a style invented by musicologist/composer Charles Seeger (1886-1979), who had been one of Cowell's mentors, known as dissonant counterpoint, an idiom in which the traditional rules of counterpoint were reversed to produce maximum dissonance rather than consonance. In his own writings about Becker, Cowell emphasized his ties to Renaissance church polyphony, calling him 'a Sixteenth-Century modern.' For a promotional pamphlet Becker produced, Cowell wrote that Becker 'bases his style on the art of the great vocal polyphonists, de Lassus, Palestrina, Victoria, etc. Using their breadth and religious feeling, he has poured his own modern materials into the old polyphonic forms.' Elsewhere Becker can fall into a kind of modernist simulacrum of Classical-era style, in conventional four-part textures differentiated by the harshness of dissonant intervals between moving lines. He picked up Cowell's passion for tone clusters, often pitting black keys on the piano against white (in common with some other early moderns like Stravinsky and Ornstein), and he made a notational fetish of large sharps and flats that were intended to apply to an entire chord. In his music, he said, there was no dissonance, because 'dissonance replaced consonance as the norm.' Along with the Symphonia Brevis, the Concerto Arabesque, and a motoric percussion ensemble piece called The Abongo (which the percussion-loving Cage expressed admiration for), Becker's seven chamber works abstractly called Soundpieces have proved the most public part of his output. This is the first recording to bring them all together, and indeed the first commercial recording of several of them. That John Becker will remain the least-celebrated member of the American Five is probably inevitable. But at his best he achieves considerable eloquence in the then-new idiom of dissonant counterpoint, and a textural momentum and energy that seem all his own."

POLANSKY, LARRY These Are the Generations CD
"The title of this recording has multiple meanings for its composer, Larry Polansky (b. 1954). These are the generations... is a translation of the Hebrew title for the second work on the program, Eleh Tol'd'ot, the first words of the thirty-fifth verse of the first book (B'rey'sheet) of the Torah. Beyond referencing Polansky's Jewish heritage, the phrase reflects this particular collection of works on several levels. The compositions included stem from different generations of Polansky's musical output: Some were composed in the 1980s while he was teaching at Mills College in Oakland, California (Eleh Tol'd'ot, Sacco, Vanzetti); some while living in New Hampshire when he was a Professor of Music at Dartmouth College (Glockentood II, 22 Sounds-); and others are recent compositions completed in Santa Cruz, California, around the time of Polansky's retirement from the University of California, Santa Cruz (five songs for kate and vanessa, kaddish (ladder) canon). The performers on the recording are similarly of different generations. Some have known and worked with Polansky since the 1980s or earlier; others are much younger and began working with him as graduate students within the last few years. Moreover, some of these works use some form of algorithmic composition while others use more conventional approaches to composing music. In some pieces, the musicians themselves must enact some kind of procedure to generate the sounds or structures they are to play. Finally, the works presented here demonstrate Polansky's deep understanding of the history and techniques of experimental music in the United States. Within these compositions one can find compositional approaches that span styles from the ultramodernists in the early twentieth century to advanced computational algorithms not yet possible in that era. Through these works Polansky somehow manages to integrate older and newer styles of experimental composition into a cohesive voice that despite, or perhaps because of, its eclecticism and diversity is unmistakably the music of Larry Polansky."

FIELDS, SCOTT Seven Deserts CD
"Wrestling with the notion of balancing both formal construction and creative spontaneity has allowed Scott Fields (b. 1952) to compose a powerful body of work with ties to extramusical concerns from the realms of literature, philosophy, and science. Seven Deserts (2019), rather than operating from a fixed narrative structure with predetermined events, lays out the ground rules for a manifestation that is absolutely identical in every performance in its operations and sonic vocabulary, but with each realization completely unique in internal detail and musical interaction. Improvisation fleshes out the structure yet also embeds itself in the musical foundation to help determine the overall shape. The conductor is improvising to the same extent that the individual players are and may set forces in motion, allow them to work, and then, based on the results, initiate the next iteration. In Seven Deserts, Fields has created a work that has a sense of loss and unnamable dread coexisting with an objectivist appreciation of aesthetic beauty and balance. He shifts the focus between foreground and background, hyperactivity versus the static, saturated sound and quietude. By recording Seven Deserts in the performance hall in Cologne, both with and without an audience, Fields was able to have the best of both worlds. Listening through the set, one hears deserts in full bloom: vivacious, juicy, and ripe with the players' interactions, virtuosic solo outings, and varied sonic environments. There are elegiac clouds that suddenly are scattered with Euro-jazz disruptions. Baroque-sounding flute harmonies splinter into jazzy riffs that never settle into unisons but spiral outward. A tense groove reminiscent of Miles Davis's On the Corner period shatters into shards of noise and floating tones. We hear roiling saxophones and vibraphone kicked over the edge by electric guitar punctuations and roaring tenor sax expletives. The final movement reveals an impression of Debussy as orchestrated by Webern, which opens into fractured solo guitar vs the ensemble and then resolving into strange attractors -- pools of repeated activities without repetition and a sudden end. Fields has chosen his players wisely, an orchestra of virtuosic soloists, including members of Ensemble Musikfabrik and other new music groups from Cologne, as well as freelancers drawn both from the region and other corners of the world."

HUMPHREY Humphrey LP
It is 1971. South Africa is struggling with a myriad of political and cultural problems. Mandela is in jail and the United Nations has declared it supports isolating South Africa for its apartheid policies. The state-controlled South African Broadcasting Corporation has an almost complete monopoly on what is being played on the radio, and the advent of television wouldn't be seen in South Africa for another five years as such things are seen as a threat that would undermine the proud Afrikaans tradition and spread communism and immorality. The stain of apartheid also means that most of the music being aired on the radio comes from exclusively white artists and the majority of accessible music comes from the States and the UK, with many people not realizing that local exports like Manfred Lubowitz (later known as Manfred Mann) actually come from South Africa. Despite such a tumultuous social and political backdrop, or perhaps because of it, music remains an escape for much of South Africa's youth and local scenes do spring up. This is the setting in which a band with the unusual name of Humphrey is born. The album was recorded over two weeks, and upon its release is met with rave reviews and nominated for a SARI award. Naturally, a single -- "Down Down" b/w "In The Morning" -- is released, but is met with a surprisingly lackluster response. Humphrey seemed to fade into obscurity not long after the album came out. Until, that is, Notes On A Journey's own Stefan Leisering stumbled across the album in Johannesburg, while touring South Africa with the Jazzanova live band. The Anglo-American folk, pop, rock, and psych influences on Humphrey are undeniable, something about these influences finding a voice at such a particular time and in such a particular place makes this album truly unique. The record seems almost polarized in nature, the saccharine melodies of the harmonized vocals and the band's pop sensibilities are kept from becoming throwaway bubblegum tunes by the songs unexpected psych elements, chord changes, and arrangements that bring a touch of darkness and mysticism. An early '70s South African pop psych gem, NOAJ reckon you'll be delighted it's getting another chance to shine. 180 gram vinyl; Old School Tip On cover; includes download card.

GAMEDZE, ASHER Dialectic Soul 2LP
Double LP version. Includes printed inner sleeves. On The Corner Records announce the release of Dialectic Soul, the debut album from one of Cape Town's most cutting-edge, visionary artists and musicians, the drummer Asher Gamedze. This is jazz at its most spiritual, most progressive, and most appealing form. As Asher himself says: "Dialectic Soul is about motion and a refusal to remain static or stay still. It's the commitment to be continually moving." Recorded live over two days at the Sound and Motion Studios in Cape Town with renowned musicians -- Thembinkosi Mavimbela (bass), Buddy Wells (tenor sax), Robin Fassie-Kock (trumpet), Nono Nkoane (voc) -- Dialectic Soul is breathtaking in its musical vitality and expression of soul seeking truth. By incorporating the concept of the total art for this project, it fits perfectly within On The Corner's aesthetic of music, art and vision for creative innovation. Label art director Victoria Topping created the sleeve design working with Asher's drawings and concept. Asher continues: "My composition 'state of emergence' introduces the themes that constitute the album; free drums representing autonomous African motion, the saxophone reflecting deeply and honestly on the violence of colonialism, the teachings of Coltrane, Steve Biko, Makeba, and Malcolm X and others inspired the music's positive manifestations of resistance. Fundamentally, it is about the reclamation of the historical imperative. It is about the dialect of the soul and the spirit while it moves through history. The soul is dialectic. Motion is imperative. We keep moving." Gamedze is best known for his work with Angel Bat Dawit on International Anthem.

RAZORCUTS Storyteller 2LP
Storyteller, which saw release in February of '88, arguably is the best album to come from the generation of indie pop bands to which Razorcuts belonged. Most of their peers tended to falter beyond the convenient restrictions of singles and EPs, but Storyteller, whether by luck or design, hangs together as a complete work, not a moment of its 35 minutes wasted or excess to requirements. Indeed, there are few lovelier songs from that year than "Brighter Now", "Jade", and the title track. Includes original album plus eight additional tracks on the second disc. Remastered. HANGMAN'S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS Smashed Full Of Wonder CD
A major retrospective of late '80s psychedelic garage rockers Hangman's Beautiful Daughters. A mainstay of the indie and C86 scene, the London-based band were signed to Dan Treacy's Dreamworld Records. Treacy, the genius behind The Television Personalities, played a major role in the band's birth, contributing a few songs and as producer. "They all looked dead cool: Gordon played chiming 12-string guitar licks which sounded like a dirty version of Roger McGuinn's sound with the Byrds, with his long blond fringe making him look like a tougher cousin of Brian Jones. Emily [Brown] had a sensuous, husky alto voice, and looked fine with her long wavy auburn locks, suede fringed boots and mini-skirts. Phil [King] was taciturn and nonchalant; impenetrable with his shades and dark bowl-haircut and like a cuter version of Bill Wyman. Ray [Philpott] was an accomplished, energetic and handsome drummer with a ready grin and long parted wavy chestnut hair. Sandy [Fleming] was an exuberant presence, with her raven-black short spiky hair, skinny legs and leathers; she played choppy rhythm chords on a sunburst pear-drop Vox guitar, and added her voice to the mix. There weren't many women making rock music in those days, so it was very distinctive to have two women at the front." Hangman's Beautiful Daughters were described at the time as like a cross between The Jefferson Airplane, MC5, and The Velvet Underground. Touring regularly across the UK and mainland Europe, they released the EP And Love is Blue, the singles "They Fell for Words like Love" and "Darkside", plus the album Trash Mantra (1987). All of these recordings were also repackaged and released in Germany and the US. A further EP was recorded for Dreamworld but never released, with two songs from that session, "If It Means Anything" and "King of Sweden", getting their first airing on the new release. Equally adept at producing hard charging rockers or more languid, opiate-tinged soundscapes, Hangman's Beautiful Daughters were part of the DIY culture that helped shape British guitar music. Their complete recordings remastered; Includes two previously unreleased tracks. The album comes with a deluxe 12-page booklet, featuring never-seen before photos and a history of the band written by Jowe Head, of Television Personalities and Swell Maps fame. REINHARD, SAMUEL Miniatures LP
On Miniatures, Swiss composer and producer Samuel Reinhard looks to indeterminate techniques of mid-century experimental composers to produce a sonic path forward that's as refined as it is evocative. While Miniatures is built from recordings of short piano gestures decaying towards silence, amid the four movements that comprise the suite, something else grows. Notes cycle, collide, and wash away within boundaries the artist has set, but in their wake new processual textures develop. A hiss blankets the harmonic material, and clicks that once marked sharp cuts between repetitions become a percussive undercurrent. Working with digital tools, Reinhard conjures the interior of an animate environment and extends an invitation to notice the small stuff that swells when you settle in with duration. Cover photography by Samuel Reinhard; design by Kaj Lehmann. Edition of 200.

BELL WITCH AND AERIAL RUIN Stygian Bough: Volume 1 CD
"The debut collaboration album from doom metal giants Bell Witch and Aerial Ruin (the solo folk project of singer/songwriter Erik Moggridge), under the moniker of Stygian Bough is a culmination of the work of both artists as witnessed previously on Bell Witch's three full-length albums, where Moggrdige has contributed guest vocals. With each succeeding Bell Witch release, one has seen Moggridge's involvement with the band developing, growing and getting more elaborate. This release, produced by Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Wolves In The Throne Room, Anna Von Hausswolff), follows up Bell Witch's colossal Mirror Reaper opus with Moggrdige actually being involved in the creative and writing process with the band duo of Dylan Desmond (bass/vocals) and Jesse Shreibman (drums/synthesizers/vocals). Not only does Stygian Bough expand and broaden this alliance between the artists, but with Aerial Ruin contributing to the songwriting of this dedicated collaboration and incorporating his signature and alluring style of emotionally-driven folk, along with taking the lead vocal position, adding to the band's caliber of unearthly towering doom, this album becomes its own singular, unparalleled doom metal entity."

MOOD OF DEFIANCE Now LP
Radiation Records present the first vinyl reissue of Mood Of Defiance's Now, originally released in 1982. Southern Los Angeles experimental punk band Mood Of Defiance was formed in Hermosa Beach in 1981, spinning off from a short-lived synthesizer project called Kindled Imagination, formed in nearby San Pedro (home to The Minutemen) with drummer Richie Wilder of Saccharine Trust. Teenaged lead singer and band originator Rachel Morgan, who was known as "Screaming Bitch Rachel" and later, Hatha Watha, formed MOD with Wilder, recruiting initial guitarist TA Black and bassist Kevin Ball from a music press advertisement. Debut demo recordings (eventually issued as In A Box) featured this line-up but after Black and Ball quit the band, they were replaced by Danny Dean Philips and Gary Kail from the band Anti, moonlighting in this side project for debut album Now, released on Philips and Kail's aptly-titled New Underground label in 1982; other band members featured on the disc include drummer Thaddeus. Opener "Divided States Of America" set the disc's defiant punk tone, though "Sticky Lips" and "Girl In A Painting" are less caustic, with broader musical dexterity and post-punk rhythmic references. An important piece of southern California punk history, back on vinyl after 38 years. First 150 copies are individually numbered and on clear vinyl; Includes full reproduction of the three original inserts in a poster insert; Edition of 500.

Case in point, the astoundingly great 50-year-old album The Ice Age by Indianapolis quintet ICE was never even released upon its completion. In 1970, the band recorded ten original songs at 8-Track Studios in Chicago, only to break up shortly thereafter. Two of the tracks were eventually released as a 45 in 1972, but confusingly under a different band name, Zukus! The A-side of that single was featured on Brown Acid -- The Ninth Trip, which led Riding Easy Records to discover when licensing the track that an entire album had been languishing in obscurity all of this time. The 2-inch master tapes had been shelved and forgotten until recently when The Ice Age tracks were converted to digital and remixed, preserving the sounds of the original vocals and instruments. Finally, half a century later, this ten-song album of radio-ready rock will finally see light of day. The Ice Age is an exceptional archive of hard-edged rock with serious pop hooks akin to something like Grand Funk Railroad meets The Guess Who and The Move. It rocks hard, but is also interlaced with glorious melodic hooks. Had fate been less fickle, this album would've long been a classic rock radio staple. BLACK HELIUM Primitive Fuck LP
2020 repress on pink vinyl. Black Helium are a four-piece that formed in 2016 for a special one-off Halloween gig at the notoriously heady Guild Navigator club in East London and have since spread their sonic gumbo of hard-edged psychedelic head-fuckery and Neanderthal glam rock swagger across the country. Heavy friends Stuart Gray (vocals, guitar), Beck Harvey (vocals, bass) Davey Mulka (guitar), and Ben Davies (drums) went on to record their debut, Primitive Fuck, at Hermitage Studios with Margo Broom in March 2017. Although, Ben Davies disappeared abruptly after recording his drum tracks after experiencing a "profound life-changing mystical occurrence". Influenced by bands such as Black Sabbath, Hawkwind, Amon Düül II, and The Stooges, Primitive Fuck channels an era when psychedelic rock stood for mind expanding eclecticism and hip-shaking sonic hedonism in equal measure, moving from motor city heroism, to shapeless kosmische, ambient ego-death via space ritual riff worship. Now, with new drummer, Diogo Gomes on board, Primitive Fuck represents the birth of a band your psychiatrist warned you about. ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. FEAT. GEOFF LEIGH Chosen Star Child's Confession CD
The career of Acid Mothers Temple has been an interesting and varied one. With well over 200 releases to their name since 1996, the band have certainly put in the hard yards. Recent times have seen a resurgence in their underground cult popularity. Between Autumn 2014 and December 2015, core AMT members Tsuyama Atsushi (bassist/vocalist) and Shimura Koji (drums) left the band. Original members Makoto Kawabata and Hiroshi Higashi took this as their chance to create a new line-up and that this was a good chance to refresh the band with new members. The last Acid Mothers Temple album released by Riot Season was Reverse Of Rebirth In Universe in 2018 (REPOSE 073R-LP) which was incredibly well received. For that album the newly settled line up featuring new boys Wolf (bass), Satoshima Nani (drums), and Jyonson Tsu (vocals) re-recorded old AMT classics and a few new jams. The album and subsequent world tour were incredibly well received, not only by long time AMT diehards but also a whole new crowd who were discovering the band for the first time, either via the album of the show, which included the band's first appearance at Glastonbury Festival in summer 2019. Chosen Star Child's Confession is the latest studio album from the band which should be considered the genuine "first album" of this new line-up with the added presence of Geoff Leigh (ex Henry Cow). In the band's own words: "We had recording session with Geoff Leigh (ex Henry Cow) at the beautiful Sam and Rachel's recording studio in London in July 2018 (with work completed back in Japan in 2019). It was the first year of the new vocalist Jyonson. We recorded some our standards and classics also new jam session. We found many musical direction, daydream psychedelic, dubby jazz groove, Si-Fi trance, experimental exotic chaos, etc... it's the truly beginning of Acid Mothers Temple's new era!" CD version includes bonus track "Santa Maria Enfance".

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. FEAT. GEOFF LEIGH Chosen Star Child's Confession LP
LP version. Orange vinyl; edition of 500. PERHAPS 7.0 LP
"... I initially stumbled upon the odd and highly dangerous musical practices of Perhaps while on an assignment in Bermuda. There had been rumors of a local tribesman partaking in occult practices, of which I knew was native strictly to the Goat Bleeding Bad Men of the Congolese jungle . . . Upon arrival it was clear there was a strange foreign intervention within the community of the tribe, which was largely uninhabited upon first glance. Much of the surrounding foliage had been strung with the entrails of various animals and there were several disturbing fixtures composed of bones and various organs lining the commune. I managed to track down the tribesman, who appeared to be in some deep trance and was entirely unable to communicate, though seemed to be fixated on a single task: the drawing of a peculiar symbol. My researching the symbol resulted in only one hit, a piece of musical literature by a band Perhaps, who I later found to be recording in the area just weeks before . . . Wherever [Perhaps] went a small commune followed, which was typically composed of deranged acid freaks, occultists, and Norwegian dairy farmers who had sold all their assets to follow the band after 'hearing their music speak from the mountains'. After managing to crack into one of their camps that was stationed in an abandoned motel, I spoke with Jim Haney of Perhaps regarding their cultish practices, who gave little in way of detail but claimed to be working towards a deconstruction of reality through a linguistic utilization of vibration. My stint with the cosmic beings through the telekinetic transmission had led to one conclusion; that Perhaps have been in the works on something new . . . Through my continued interest I've procured the names of other members of this current project, which include: Sean McDermott, Tom Weeks, Ricky Petraglia, David Khoshtinat, Ben Talmi, Makoto Kawabata, Lucas Brode, Isiah Mitchell, Olivia Kieffer, Tyler Skoglund, Chang Chang. Though I can't say exactly what is to come, it seems as if the ideas that were proposed during my initial meet may have been surpassed. Perhaps' plans have begun to surface, and we are all at risk, for whatever that means. The great column and the vibrational prismic beings have shifted their attention to earthly matters, it would be foolhardy to not heed their warning. Though, self-preservation may be an impossibility." --Sam Hailstone December 2019 Includes download code; edition of 300.

MASTER OOGWAY Earth And Other Worlds CD
Rune Grammofon introduce a new name to their roster. Master Oogway are four young musicians aged between 23 and 26. They met at the Norwegian Academy of Music in 2015 with a common desire to play vibrant, improvised music with strong themes and room for spontaneity at a high energy level. Like many players on the young, Norwegian progressive jazz scene their instrumental skills are already highly developed but never used to show off. Earth And Other Worlds is the quartet's second album, their debut was released on the Clean Feed label in 2018. Their new effort is more dynamic and varied and shows more mature and accomplished songwriting, not to mention the stronger group interactions and the impressive solo stretches from sax player Lauritz Lyster Skeidsvoll and guitarist/composer Håvard Nordberg Funderud. While it's fair to say that they operate in much of the same musical landscape as Bushman's Revenge or Kokofant, it's equally fair to note that their general approach and attitude comes with a slightly stronger emphasis on jazz. Håvard Nordberg Funderud finished his bachelor at the Norwegian Academy of Music in 2018 and has also studied in Gothenburg and Copenhagen. He is involved in several projects, but Master Oogway is his priority. Lauritz Lyster Skeidsvoll and Karl Erik Horndalsveen have both finished their education at the same academy as Funderud. Martin Heggli Mellem is currently finishing his bachelor at the jazz program at NTNU in Trondheim. Personnel: Håvard Nordberg Funderud - guitar; Lauritz Lyster Skeidsvoll - saxophone; Karl Erik Horndalsveen - double bass; Martin Heggli Mellem - drums.

I LIKE TO SLEEP Daymare CD
Rune Grammofon introduce I Like To Sleep to their roster. Taking their name from a Thelonious Monk quote, I Like To Sleep are three young Norwegian musicians, all 22 years old. Nicolas Leirtrø and Øyvind Leite first met in high school in Trondheim before they joined up with Amund in a youth big band. It soon became apparent that they shared the same musical background centered around '70s progressive rock, classical music, jazz, and improvisation. Soon after the trio was formed, first for fun, but soon with higher ambitions, they won the prestigious "Young Jazz Musicians of the Year" award in 2018. Daymare is the trio's second album, their debut was released on the small All Good Clean Records label in 2017. While their debut showed a lot of quality and promise, their new effort is a huge step forward on all accounts, especially considering their young age. The lazy way would be to place I Like To Sleep with certain other Rune Grammofon "power jazz" groups, but their unique instrumentation, natural openness and youthful curiosity place them apart from the rest. All three members are currently in the middle of their jazz studies at NTNU in Trondheim. They are active as composers, freelancers and in other projects, including concert booking on the city's vibrant music scene. In case you recognize the name, Amund Storløkken Åse is the son of Ståle Storløkken who as a member of Supersilent appeared on Rune Grammofon's very first release back in early 1998, and later on several more records with Supersilent, Humcrush, Elephant9, and a couple of times with Motorpsycho. The circle is closed. Personnel: Amund Storløkken Åse - vibraphone; Nicolas Leirtrø - baritone guitar; Øyvind Leite - drums.

FEAR RATIO, THE They Can't Be Saved CD
James Ruskin and Mark Broom are The Fear Ratio. The duo, who are long-term collaborators, have created their own signature style with abstract synths, heavy basslines and experimental soundscapes that fit somewhere in between IDM, electronica and ambient. Their acclaimed debut album Lightbox was initially released in 2011 on Ruskin's Blueprint Records, featuring remixes from Warp aficionados Plaid and Deadhand. Soon after they formed a long-lasting relationship with cult Manchester based label Skam, with the follow-up album, Refuge Of A Twisted Soul (SKALD 031CD/LP, 2015). 2018 saw a four track Live EP of exclusive versions of their Autechre supporting slot at the Great Northern Warehouse in Manchester. Several years and various solo productions later, The Fear Ratio return with They Can't Be Saved, an album that solidifies their reputation as experimental producers. From the ethereal opening bars of "Sender" slowly twisting into a brooding dub breakbeat, to the staccato, bugged-out atmospherics of "Grey Code," the ghostly electronics of "Small World", to the tripped-out, schizophrenic, haunting bass of "Game Plan," and the sun-dappled keys of "The Final Vision," Broom and Ruskin flex their techno muscles ever further beyond the floor.

LEE & TUTTI FRUTTI, RITA Entradas E Bandeiras LP
Survival Research present a reissue of Rita Lee & Tutti Frutti's Entradas E Bandeiras, originally released in 1976. As a founding member of innovative Brazilian psychedelic group Os Mutantes, Rita Lee's reputation is assured as a ground-breaking pioneer. Born Rita Lee Jones in 1947 in the upscale Vila Mariana district of Sao Paulo, Rita's father was an American descended from a Confederate soldier who moved to Brazil at the end of the US Civil War, her mother a Brazilian of Italian origin. After studying piano with renowned musician Magdalena Tagliaferro, Lee switched to the drums. In 1966, she formed Os Mutantes with Sergio Dias and Arnaldo Baptista, introducing psychedelia to Brazil with their debut album. On the edge of the Tropicalia movement, Os Mutantes collaborated with Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, prior to their London exile and released five albums before disbanding in 1972, with Lee also issued two solo albums, produced with Mutantes collaborators. She then formed the short-lived psychedelic folk duo Cilibrinas Do Eden with Lucia Turnbull (the daughter of a Scottish father and Brazilian mother who had played in London with The Solid British Hat Band before returning to Brazil in 1972), but despite a high profile performance at the Phono 73 festival, the project was something of a critical failure, leading Lee and Turnbull to form Tutti Frutti with members of Sao Paulo rock band Lisergia, this time aiming for a glam-rock sound. Third album Entradas E Bandeiras was released by Som Livre in 1976 and recorded at Studio Eldorado with producer Wagner Baldinato; opening track "Corista De Rock" describes our gal as a "Rock Chorist", and there's a Boston-like guitar solo mid-way through from Luis Sergio Carlini to prove the point. "Lady Babel" has a repeated "Hoo Hoo" chorus, while "Coisas Da Vida" is more contemplative; "Bruxa Amarela" has nods to psychedelia in Sergio Della Monica's tubular bells, but Carlini's harmonica and slide guitar bend it back to the blues.

HOWL THE GOOD Howl The Good LP
Survival Research present a reissue of Howl The Good's self-titled album, originally released in 1972. During the early 1970s, Detroit rock band Howl The Good signed to Motown's prog-rock offshoot, Rare Earth. Travelling to London to record their self-titled debut album at Olympic Studios, they were fortunate to work with engineer Chris Kimsey (best known for his later work with Peter Frampton and The Rolling Stones), with ex-Spooky Tooth keyboardist Gary Wright in the producer's chair; Wright was a highly-rated session player that worked with George Harrison, Elton John, Joe Cocker, and Steve Winwood, and he also enjoyed a successful solo career. The resultant album is a competent slice of semi-commercial prog rock with an undercurrent of blues and the odd pastoral number; despite the obviously American feel of the material, Billboard assumed the group was British, due to the location of the album's recording. Despite the strength of "Just Pretend It's Another Day" and "Long Way From Home", both co-written by Wright, and a one-off rendition of Cat Stevens's "The Joke", the album flopped on release on both sides of the Atlantic, leading the band to remain in obscurity and ultimately break up.

KIKUCHI, SUNSHUKE Hurricane Polymar Original Soundtrack LP
Survival Research present a reissue of Shunsuke Kikuchi's Hurricane Polymar Original Soundtrack, originally released in 1981. Shunsuke Kikuchi is one of the best-known composers of background music for Japanese television and film soundtracks. Born in 1931 in Hirosaki, located in the far north of the main Japanese island of Honshu, Kikuchi enjoyed a long and illustrious career that began in the early 1960s, having presided over dozens of popular soundtracks into the new millennium, including those for the Dragon Ball series as well as various Gamera monster films. A graduate of the Nihon University College of Fine Arts and Music, Kikuchi is largely associated with anime and effects-laden tokusatsu films, along with action dramas, and jidaigeki period films. Whether crafting up-tempo action themes or slow background pieces for long-running television series, establishing the reputation that any television show featuring his music was bound to hit. One of his songs, "Urami Bushi", from the Female Convict Scorpion series, ended up in the soundtrack of Kill Bill. He is the recipient of various awards, including a lifetime achievement award, granted in 2015 at the Japan Record Awards. The Hurricane Polymar series of action anime was initiated in 1974, the plot concerning a crime fighter with a special suit that allows him to change shape while wearing it. This soundtrack album is drawn from the original 1974 TV series, with all manner of tense music for fight scenes, heroic fanfares saluting and other semi-electronic incidental interludes, highlighting the irresistible allure of Kikuchi's atmospheric compositions.

JOHNSON SEXTET, HAROLD House On Elm Street LP
Survival Research present a reissue of Harold Johnson Sextet's House On Elm Street, originally released in 1967. Los Angeles-based child prodigy Harold Johnson began playing piano in church when he was five years old. He began receiving private piano lessons that same year and went on to study string instruments at elementary school and guitar and double bass while in middle school, so by the time he began attending high school, he had the musical skill of a far older professional. Forming a group with other like-minded student peers, the Harold Johnson Sextet signed to Harry Mitchell's HME label to release a debut album, House On Elm Street, which would later be reissued by MCA subsidiary, Revue. Featuring future Gladys Knight drummer Ronald Rutledge, percussionist Billy Jackson, and flutist David Crawford, who would later be musical arranger for Patti Labelle, the album mixed Johnson's intense originals with a rousing piano take of Bobby Hebb's "Sunny" and an instrumental rendition of the theme song from Alfie. Johnson later drafted Ndugu Chncelor into the group and after signing with Motown in 1970, he worked with Diana Ross, The Temptations, and countless others; in 2016, he reformed the Sextet to visit House On Elm Street for its 40th anniversary.

SLEEPARCHIVE Trust 2LP
Throughout his career, Roger Semsroth has followed a deep intuition for experimentation in sound, wrapping club music around eerie microtonal motifs and industrial sensibilities. This new work for Tresor takes a step forward, as the first true techno album from Sleeparchive, where his previous LPs have exhibited themselves more conceptually, or under different names and his Nord Vest label. Semsroth has been active in electronic music since the late '90s. He received initial attention first for his electro productions under the alias Skanfrom and the '80s minimal synth inspired Television Set. These projects echoed his love for these sounds, which the East Berliner had steadily immersed himself with after the end of the GDR. Upon hearing the bleeps of Mika Vainio and Plastikman, he began to engage with his strain of techno. Over the last decade, he has focused on his Sleeparchive alias, which dates back to 2004. Alongside close friend DJ Pete, he performs live techno as TR-101. His relationship with Tresor began in 2011, first releasing the Ronan Point EP (TRESOR 243EP) and following up with the crucial A Man Dies In The Street series in 2013 (TRESOR 260EP, TRESOR 264EP). With this new album, Sleeparchive's impact on the techno sound is ever more relevant. Awaking in constant locomotion, locked-in, unrelenting, and dry. Sleeparchive's churning loops etch visions of tight minimalism at times densely frenetic and others serenely galactic. This predilection continues throughout the four sides on the album, eschewing conventional arrangement styles with gradual probabilistic change. Tracks such as "Needle" and "Peccant" offer up precise, sinewy techno. "Leave" recalls the Detroit sound of Terrence Dixon, with its cascading synth tones and droning atmospheres. The album closes with a different version of "Trust" to that found on 2019's Revised Recordings EP released on Tresor (TRESOR 309EP), with its now-familiar nerve-inducing pizzicato strings even more at the fore with its mechanic delivery. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code.

MINIMAL VIOLENCE DESTROY > physical REALITY psychic TRUST Phase One 12"
Tresor welcome Minimal Violence to the label, starting with the first chapter in a series of three records entitled DESTROY ---> [physical] REALITY [psychic] --- TRUST. At the furthest edges of their idiosyncratic brand of ferocious hardware techno, this first EP, Phase One, reveals the Vancouver duo to be expertly out on a limb. Mirroring the explosive cut and thrust of their live sets, their recorded output extends a metaphysical rave. Throughout, Ash Luk and Lida P cut their cinematic melodies into a clattering rave hole, unceasingly revising the gravitational pull in each direction. "Ravebomb" finds a route of no-nonsense with its unhinged endorphin rush of surging EBM style bass and rough-handed rhythms. It is followed up by an alternate version of "Ravebomb", the "Fire Mix", which casts its elements into a heady psychoactive cloud on a collision course with its kick drum. Glimpses of a rhythmic waywardness coat "Perfect Rendition", full of tape tics and wobble, with a push to '90s UK, beat experimentations and the pull of arching hookworms. Closing out the EP is "The Next Screen Is Death", with a dystopian '80s wave sound, where short snippets of sampled mush imbue disturbed synth stabs, while arpeggiated basses drive with momentum a feverous descent in tandem with trance-echoing melodies.

HAQQ, ABDUL QADIM The Book of Drexciya Volume 1 Book
Tresor announce the Drexciyan journey's continuation with the release of The Book Of Drexciya Volume 1, a graphic novel which covers the first five vivid chapters of this powerful mythology, a crucial Afrofuturist work. African pregnant women thrown off the slave ships gave birth underwater to amphibious creatures. They could breathe as they did in their mothers' wombs, they had webbed hands and feet and became the Drexciyan wave jumpers: great warriors of the abyss. Revealed in the inner sleeve notes of The Quest (1997), through a map of the diasporic black culture, Drexciya illustrated four phases: The Slave Trade, Migration Route of Rural Blacks to Northern Cities, Techno Leaves Detroit, Spreads Worldwide, and The Journey Home (Future). It introduces the very creatures and warriors found in these pages, such as Wavejumpers and Deep Sea Dwellers. The return home is of destination future, where lays the population of their abyss. Follow the story of the first Drexciyan, his subaquatic birth, growing up in the caves of Ociya Syndor, later to become Drexaha, the empire's first king. Get introduced to Dr. Blowfin, Master of Alchemy and Quantum Genetics, who masterminded Drexciyan computer systems and network, based on Genetic Intelligence and DNA matrix systems. Hear the story of the birth of the wavejumpers, the mightest warriors of Drexciya. Enter Bubble Metropolis, thriving with its central command, aquabahns and aqua wormhole gateways to the cephalopod-like oceanic Cruisers. Authored by Abdul Qadim Haqq and Dai Sato, it features the art of Haqq, Leo Rodrigues, Alan Oldham, Hector Rubilar, Leonardo Gondim, Daniel Oliviera, and Milton Estevam. Haqq's legendary concept imagery associated with the Detroit techno community and beyond for almost 30 years and his contributions to the mythology at the time of conception makes him uniquely positioned to lead this endeavor. Dai Sato is most known for his screenwriting for animes Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell. This project comes with the full support of living Drexciya member Gerald Donald and Helen Stinson, the surviving mother of James Stinson. Graphic novel; hardcover; 76 pages.

"Pat's Pigs" actually sounds like a Basil bird recording, slowed and treated, mixed with simple improvisation. But it could well be pigs. Pat's pigs. This whole tape recording may have been an early experiment towards what was to become Kirchin's Worlds Within Worlds Parts I and II (JBH 080LP). A lot of Basil's work was headed in that direction. "Electronic" is not that electronic. There are elements of the classic Basil Kirchin drone sound here, mixed with multiple and treated recordings of the autistic children of Schurmatt, along with Esther, his wife, singing. Esther worked as a nurse with the children, Basil got to know many of them, and became fascinated by the extreme musical noises they would make with their voices. This recording is not necessarily for the faint hearted, but makes for extraordinary listening, based on the fact this would have been made and mixed, simply as a classic and progressive Kirchin experiment, back in the late 1960s/early 1970s. This also has untreated elements that would eventually contribute towards Quantum, his preferred version of the WWW concept. "The Suspended Fourth" comes across like a soundtrack. It has a very distinctive and pastoral Kirchin style leitmotif that repeats along its glorious and slightly disturbed 21 minutes. It's very well produced, possibly built up and improvised over a few days. The tape itself states that this is The Suspended Forth with a subtitle: "The Musical Study Of A Mind, Part 1 Schizophrenia". It therefore could be something to do with a soundtrack he was asked to make for a mental health conference for psychiatrists at Earls Court in the late 1960s (see States Of Mind, -- the British jazz musical line seems like it could well be the very same). The original title for this album and the artwork come from an empty tape box from the archive, which sums up all sorts of things about Basil, his music, and the tape archive all at the same time. More reel discoveries will follow. Full color sleeve with sleevenotes.

JANE & THE MAGIK BANANAS Inscrutable Intentions LP
After a long hiatus the noisy and most telepathic Montreal impro trio Jane & The Magik Bananas, led by Sam Shalabi (Land Of Kush, Karkhana, Dwarfs Of East Agouza) returned with a shifted focus exploring rhythm in a global sense. Live compositional practice, with rhythm and polyrhythm as the structuring principle, lead the group to different kinds of Western/non-Western tuning and micro tonality. In a certain way they play in the Western tradition of Ornette Coleman's Prime Time Band, Harry Partch, and Captain Beefheart. Various "world music" traditions boiled together in the groovy crucible of improvisation. An album that will certainly delight friends of the Dwarfs Of East Agouza. Personnel: Michel F Cote - drums, amplified percussion, feedback; Alexandre St-Onge - electric bass, electronics, voice; Sam Shalabi - electric guitar. Limited edition released; part of Unrock's Saraswati Series.

ES Less of Everything LP
Less of Everything. The title of Es's first full-length LP could be interpreted as a manifesto pledge, an outright demand or a purely literal sonic descriptor of the London quartet's glacial form of punk rock music. This tension between intent and interpretation has been a fundamental element of the group's output from their formation. Es is Maria Cecilia Tedemalm (vocals), Katy Cotterell (bass), Tamsin M. Leach (drums), and Flora Watters (keyboards). Their 2016 debut EP, Object Relations, released on influential London punk label La Vida Es Un Mus, was described as 'mutant synth-punk for our dystopian present' (Jess Skolnik, Bandcamp, Pitchfork). The band has since become a vital presence in London's underground DIY music scene, as well as having toured the UK with the Thurston Moore Group in 2017. After a period with members split between Glasgow and London, Es recorded Less of Everything with Lindsay Corstorphine (Sauna Youth, Primitive Parts) in Tottenham in 2019. As in Object Relations, the dynamic between Cotterell's bass and Watters's keyboard is at the heart of Less of Everything's sound: intertwining sub-zero melodies, gothic anarcho-punk influences (think Kukl, Malaria, X-Mal Deutschland) and some kind of entirely unlocatable aquatic component. When combined with Murray Leach's precise drumming, the outcome is original and immediately recognizable. Es are a group who know how to leave space, how to strive for minimalism without sacrificing aggression or dynamism. This dynamic provides the perfect backdrop for Tedemalm's relentless, pointed vocal style. While comparable 'cold' sounding groups might affect an impersonal, safer mode of lyrical or vocal detachment, Tedemalm's strategy is to 'push the lyrics as far as I can thematically until they become absurd -- overly dramatic ... while still being sincere in the feeling they're trying to invoke. I try to apply as much emotion as I can.' The result is something intense but nuanced, confrontational but complex." --Owen Williams, 2020 180 gram, transparent vinyl; edition of 500.

PRIMO Sogni LP
Primo are a quartet from Melbourne writing up-tempo, terse, chorus-and-verse with two guitars, bass, drums, and a shared group vocal sensibility to adorn their enquiries into deconstructed punk. Their songs chime and charm, sounding at times bountiful, at others brittle, always buoyant with attention to detail. Primo songs are inquisitive, chasing down questions for answers hurrying away, amidst minimalist shuffle beats and ringing-out chords. The group's debut album Amici (2018) was a triumph of the underplayed, its small details pulling focus, allowing the album to treat you to unexpected truths in plain sight. Primo's newest member since Amici was recorded is Amy Hill, who also plays in Terry and Constant Mongrel, on bass. Outside of Primo, Xanthe and Violetta both have lent their guitar skills to Terry and The Shifters respectively, whilst Suzanne works in film. 2020 sees Primo return with their second album of prudent delights entitled Sogni, from the Italian for "dreams". Using the same musical lexicon and internal logic developed through their debut, Sogni reflects on themes of decision-making, change, time, heartbreak, the practicalities of work and daily life. The songs came together as a way of making sense of the times -- offering a way through. Tracks were demo-ed quickly by early 2019, then developed collectively through the year in the rehearsal room, played live and finally recorded onto eight-track in late 2019 by Al Montfort in a number of home studios across Melbourne. Vocal duties were largely shared throughout the record, which has the same post punk sensibility and minimal approach as in previous recordings, but here imbued now with electronic flourishes and expanded instrumentation that sees Primo's sound growing bolder. Sogni will be released through Upset the Rhythm. Primo's sound has been likened to Young Marble Giants and Flying Nun bands.

MARLEY & THE WAILERS, BOB Lively Up Yourself: Roots Of A Revolution (1967-1971) 2LP
Double LP version. A superbly crafted Bob Marley set, compiled and annotated by French journalist Vincent Tarrière, chronicles the story behind this legendary article "The Wild Side of Paradise" published by Rolling Stone Magazine in 1973. Features a handpicked selection of Bob Marley's best songs, recorded at his creative peak, during the late '60s and early '70s, when he was working with producers Bunny Lee, Leslie Kong, and Lee Perry. 1973 was a turning point for Jamaican music. Perry Henzell's highly-acclaimed film The Harder They Come had come out the year before and Bob Marley had just signed with Island Records and was about to take the world by storm. In July 1973, Rolling Stone Magazine published "The Wild Side of Paradise", a major story about Jamaica and its vibrant musical scene written by Michael Thomas with striking photos by Arthur Gorson. The pair had travelled to the island to soak up the atmosphere and immerse themselves in the local music scene. There they met a 28 year old Marley who was about to tour Europe. "The Wild Side of Paradise" was a bold move for the magazine. Jamaican music was essentially unknown in the western world up to that point. "Revolution was in the air and, ten years into independence, Jamaica was on fire," remembers Gorson. Through connections with Island Records' Chris Blackwell, Thomas and Gorson managed to spend time with Marley and a series of iconic photos of the artist was taken by Gorson, one of which is on the cover of this album. "Wild Side" was the first major feature focusing on Jamaican music and would help put reggae on the international map. The article was also the seed of Thomas's book Babylon On A Thin Wire in collaboration with Adrian Boot (1976). In 1973, Bob Marley was indeed no newcomer on the Jamaican scene. He'd been active since the early '60s and had recorded some of his most creative output accompanied by his group, The Wailers. The music is fresh and undiluted, catchy and inspired, and shows Marley's genius at crafting beautiful melodies. The set features several of his early classics such as "Duppy Conqueror" and "Caution", as well as lesser-known gems such as "Wisdom" and "Long Long Winter", and songs that would find a second life on his Island albums, such as "Trench Town Rock" or "Concrete Jungle".

FAIRUZ Maarifti Feek LP
Following the reissue last year of Fairuz's classic 1979 album Wahdon (WWSLP 022LP), Wewantsounds pursue their exploration of great Lebanese music with the first vinyl reissue of Fairuz's highly sought-after LP Maarifti Feek, originally released in 1987. Recorded in Beirut around 1983-84, the album features the diva's superb voice combined with Ziad Rahbani's jazz and funk orchestration, making it one of the most in-demand albums on the Arabic funk scene. One of the greatest singers of the Middle East, Fairuz started her career in Lebanon in the '50s and quickly established herself as the most renowned Diva in the Arabic world, playing the most prestigious venues in the world. At the end of the '70s, Fairuz was at a turning point both professionally and personally. Her husband Assi Rahbani, who, with his brother Elias, had penned her biggest successes, has suffered a stroke a few years earlier. This setback ultimately led to both the demise of their marriage and the end of their professional partnership. Enter Ziad Rahbani, Fairuz and Assi's son, a young musician, playwright, and producer who had cut his teeth writing a handful of Fairuz's song -- including her 1973 hit "Sa'alouni El Nas" -- at just seventeen. Ziad Rahbani swiftly took over from his father and uncle as the singer's musical director and composer and this fruitful association, which started in 1979 with the album Wahdon, broke many new grounds for Fairuz with funkier rhythms and edgier lyrics. It was recorded at the same time as Rahbani's own 12" Abu Ali (WWSLP 027LP) which became a sought-after disco classic in its own right. The association between the two continued with a second album, Maarifti Feek ("Our Encounter"), recorded between 1983 and '84 in Beirut but only released in 1987. The album was another groundbreaking mix of influences ranging from the traditional arrangements of "Oudak Rannan" and "Ma Kdirt Nseet" to the Brazilian flavor of "Version 1" via the synth funk of "Ouverture 83" and its follow-up "Reprise 83". Also featured on the album is a beautiful remake of Joaquin Rodrigo's "Concerto de Aranjuez" in the form of a tribute to the Lebanese capital, "Li Beirut." This blend of Oriental grooves with jazz and funk orchestrations by Ziad Rahbani is a unique document of Fairuz's career development in the '80s and explains why Maarifti Feek is such a sought-after album. Remastered from the original tapes.
