KAREEM Ligeia 12"
New release by one of Berlin's most unique and longstanding producers. Patrick Stottrop's activities are at the heart and foundation of Berlin's techno sound, active since 1996 and founder of Zhark Recordings, he's been pushing and challenging the definition of dance music since its inception. On this release the title track "Legeia" as well as the tracks "Die Erwartung" and "Richmond" were taken from The Garden of Time LP recording session from 2019. These three tracks set the prevailing mood for two subsequent cuts, "Horus" and "Sorcerer". While Richmond follows a more andante direction "Legeia" presents a unique combination of drones engulfed in a wild and hectic technoid percussive inferno. "Die Erwartung" on the other hand might resemble in its overall mood the Rheingold Prelude (in a higher register) with its drone like strings layer build up. While "Horus" and "Sorcere" are recent tracks form Kareem's current live set and were recently arranged to fit into the EP format. Both tracks build on static percussive hostility and climax towards their middle parts to an overall acoustic orgy of reverberating string strikes and high-pitched drone oscillations. An overall grand addition to his continuously growing and ecstatic catalog.

VON SCHLEICHER, KATIE Consummation CD
"Katie Von Schleicher doesn't hold back. Her music, drenched in layers of warmth and fuzz, mines depression, devotion, power, and anxiety without reserve. But if channeling weighty subject matter is a constant in Von Schleicher's music, so too is transforming that material into sonic landscapes that defy expectations. On Von Schleicher's second record, Consummation, she blasts past the lo-fi power ballads of her debut Shitty Hits (2017) with a severe expansion of her sonic palette; its thirteen shape-shifting songs depict a deeply personal exploration of trauma. The result is both potent and listenable; strange and familiar; intense and entertaining -- and, perhaps most of all, teeming with life. Consummation is, in part, inspired by an alternate interpretation of Hitchcock's Vertigo. In 2018, Von Schleicher rewatched the seminal film and was struck by its largely unanalyzed subtext of abuse. She knew immediately that this hidden narrative, which spoke to her personal experience, would be the basis of her next album. While writing and engineering the record, she found sanctuary in the words of other women: namely, Carmen Maria Machado's Her Body and Other Parties, Rachel Cusk's Outline trilogy, and Rebecca Solnit's A Field Guide to Getting Lost. The latter proved particularly influential: Soon after revisiting Vertigo, Von Schleicher stumbled upon Solnit's lacerating take on the film. Solnit describes the 'wandering, stalking, haunting' of romantic pursuit that it depicts as 'consummation,' while 'real communion' -- understanding and mutual respect between two lovers -- is, to the men in the film, 'unimaginable.' The consequence is a fundamental failure of communication. At its core, Consummation evokes the pain of being unable to bridge that vast psychic distance between oneself and another."

NOVELLER Arrow CD
"Creating what Iggy Pop described to Jim Jarmusch as 'symphonies for people that don't have a lot of time,' Sarah Lipstate has emerged as an innovative and defining voice in the world of music under the name Noveller. Wielding a guitar as her main instrument, Lipstate has pioneered a transcendent approach to composition through her mastery and integration of effects pedals and technology. Forming unexpected sonic routes, her songs are vivid and cinematic, telling intricate tales with each tone and swell. Raised on a strict piano technique, the discovery of the guitar late in her teens allowed for an escape from formalism and unlocked the hidden realms of her creativity. Taking an anti-theoretical approach, suddenly music was no longer a series of notes, rests, and time signatures, but a means of intuitive expression. Her deepened interest in experimental music, fueled by the discovery of the bold noise of Sonic Youth, the epic scope of Glenn Branca, the delicate formularies of Brian Eno and the no wave discordance of Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, only furthered to inspire. A yearning to explore and feed that creativity took her from Louisiana to Austin, then Brooklyn to LA. Arrow is her first album since the move to the edge of the canyons of Los Angeles, and one can hear the destabilizing effect this had on her in the music. Out of her comfort zone in a new city, with a rolling expanse in front of her and an urban sprawl over her shoulder, Lipstate built her new album as she contemplated this change in her life. With her ability to add such unique sounds and textures, Lipstate has been sought out as a frequent collaborator, recently writing songs with Iggy Pop and performing as a member of his band on his worldwide tour. Past partners in crime have ranged from JG Thirlwell to Lee Ranaldo and she has performed as part of Rhys Chatham's Guitar Army, Nick Zinner's '41 Strings', Ben Frost's 'Music for 6 Guitars', and Glenn Branca's 100 guitar ensemble. She has also toured in support of big fans in St. Vincent, Wire, U.S. Girls, The Jesus Lizard and Helium."

SNOWGOOSE The Making Of You CD
"Snowgoose are proud to present their new album, The Making Of You, on Ba Da Bing Records. The follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut, Harmony Springs, this record sees the songwriting duo of guitarist Jim McCulloch and singer Anna Sheard supported by a who's who of Scottish pop music, including members of Belle And Sebastian and Teenage Fanclub. Tracing a line through '60s West Coast psychedelia and early '70s folk-rock, Snowgoose creates something timeless and unique, which transcends its influences to assert itself as modern and forward thinking. This album represents a new chapter in the Snowgoose story. While their 2012 debut was largely written by former Soup Dragons guitarist Jim McCulloch, the new songs see Sheard step forward as a lyricist and melodist. The result of this collaboration is a record of rare beauty and momentary intimacy, resulting in utter exuberance. McCulloch says, 'When we made the first album, I brought the bulk of the material to the party, written and ready to go. This time round, we decided to write together and it soon became clear that not only is Anna a peerless singer, she is also a wonderful lyricist.' Sheard adds, 'During the writing process, I was -- as usual -- listening to a swirling melting pot of artists, from Spanky And Our Gang, through Fleetwood Mac, to France Gall and Jobim.' Novelist Ian Rankin, who declared Snowgoose's debut one of the best albums of 2012, says, 'I was a huge fan of the first Snowgoose album and I'm equally excited by the follow-up. Such warmth and emotion, with great performances by the musicians and singer Anna Sheard. Fairport Convention, Incredible String Band, Pentangle and more come to mind, but Snowgoose add lyricism and delicacy of their own.' Del Amitri frontman Justin Currie adds, 'Jim McCulloch and Anna Sheard, with their troupe of Scottish alternative pop royalty, have made the kind of record that saved the easy listening genre in the early seventies. Think Sandy Denny crashing into a Jimmy Webb session armed with delicate west coast melodies and a little bag of very modern anxiety.'"

FLIP Experiences LP
"As instrumental hip-hop albums seem to be at an all-time high, ranging from so called lo-fi aesthetics to progressive sounds with electronic vibe, one of Austrian hip-hop's godfathers and OGs on the boards has finally dropped an instrumental album on his own. The title Experiences has been chosen not without reason as it both reflects the personal experiences the artist has gone through in his 25 years plus career but also hint the influences and musical aspects that went into this album. Flip has tried to give insight into his musical influences that began in the 80ies with groups like Public Enemy or EPMD into the '90s era with sounds ranging from Native Tongue territory to a DJ Premier or Pete Rock or the DITC producers, when he started making beats on his own for his rap group Texta. You can hear links to other production wizards like J Dilla, Hi-Tec or Madlib that changed the sampling techniques post 2000 with albums like Donuts, Hi-teknology or Madvillain. So yes, Experiences is sample-based but further developed by Flip with original basslines, keys, guitar riffs played by the producer himself. The final result though is not just a simple look back into the golden era but more a retro-futuristic approach that Flip tried to execute within those sixteen compositions. Additional scratches and vocal chops add more flavor to the tracks and as one song flows with ease into the next one, this makes Experiences an experience for the listener, too. While a lot of Hip-hop instrumental albums just let some loops run for two minutes, Flip took a more ambitious approach where continued listening to the album will reveal new details and musical ideas every time. Another fact that won't go unnoticed is the heavy punch of the drums which is due to the usage of old samplers like the legendary SP-1200, the ASR-10 or the MPC2000XL that Flip is still using, blending it though with the power of modern soft and hardware. So put your headphones on take a trip through Flip's musical mind."

BACALOV, LUIS Pitturamusica LP
The amazing Luis E. Bacalov/Ennio Morricone 1971 experimental album Pitturamusica reissued for the first time from the original master tapes. The two maestros created these compositions approaching the most advanced set of problems existing in the contemporary European musical experience. The basic modules are those proper to certain procedures of musique concrète: the non-traditional use of instruments for timbre research (e.g. the piano played on the tailpiece), the processing of human voices -- almost always reduced to pure linguistic syntagms in polyphonic combinations, the highlighting of a whole series of noise-sounds which are not audible except through electro-acoustic devices, etc. Subsequently, the sound complex -- stored on magnetic tape -- is divided into separate sections, according to a criterion of timbre distribution, and then manipulated through superimpositions, variations in the speed of the tape, natural and artificial echoes, and other processes. The music was composed on the occasion of an exhibition of the painter Edolo Masci in Milan. Edition of 150.

BRIGITTE BARBU Muzak Pour Ascenceurs En Panne CD
Uniting cosmic tones and lovely notes, unique sound collages and electronic noises, Muzak Pour Ascenseurs En Panne ("Muzak for Broken Lifts"), Brigitte Barbu's first album, explores a dreamy universe, at the crossroads of electronica and the '70s post-tune-in/drop-out, echoing shadows of the peculiar doppelgänger; Pépé Bradock. Ça Plane pour Brigitte Barbu... Resonant guitar notes, odd sounds, electronic hallucinations, and unexpected warm synth layers all gather together in Brigitte Barbu's first enigmatic album. Recorded and mixed during a reclusive one-week residency in a very special studio, under the benevolent cubic radiation of "Our Lady of the Ark of the Covenant," using a computer, synthesizers, and various string instruments, giving birth to this resolutely unique album. The guitars were sharply disciplined, propelling strings into strange and hypnotic limbos, somewhere between a weightless journey through time and a fresh science lab experiment. A perky cosmic album running away from rules and gravity. "I wanted to compose an ethereal abstract hip-hop LP" says Brigitte, "with guitar as a brainwashed instrument, mirroring machines and computers, even if surely far from being unplugged." So much for that... With a real introspective dimension, the record stands out for its pure whimsical mood. The artist had strict rules for composing: "Each track is based on the association between a title chosen for its consonances, an open tuning, a random tempo and frequencies chosen for their supposed effects, real or imagined, on the mind, body & soul." For example: Taro Patch -> Whale -> 93,75 BPM or Dobro -> Bear-> 118,125 BPM, Air Resistance -> Open Em -> Panther-> 480 BPM etc. Brigitte surgically framed an electro-acoustic compendium, finding its atmospheric mothership... Brigitte Barbu, referring to a special interlude from a vintage release "Escalope de Dingue" (Fool's Cutlet), explains that Muzak Pour Ascenseurs En Panne is in fact a custom tribute to family, friends, triggered cosmonauts, René Clément, and the card game where the winner is the bearded monarch nonchalantly stabbing himself in the head. It's a lot!

"Realising a career-long ambition, The Residents finally explore The Blues! Having been turned on to the music of lost bluesman Alvin Snow, aka Dyin' Dog, the group presents their interpretations of all ten of Snow's known recordings, alongside several new compositions inspired by his work. Fans will be familiar with The Residents love of cover versions and imposing themselves on the material of countless seminal artists. Metal, Meat & Bone sees the group take that approach a step further, having discovered a previously unknown artist on their own doorstep and found themselves moved to record their own tribute to his work. The result is a collision of the pain of the wounded bluesman and the subversive and unpredictable sound of this most unique of bands. Having performed a handful of Snow's songs on their recent In Between Dreams world tour, The Residents now present an entire suite of The Songs Of Dyin' Dog alongside the original Alvin Snow recordings, as discovered by longtime friend and associate Roland Sheeehan. Metal, Meat & Bone also sees The Residents perform alongside several collaborators, old and new. O'ROURKE, JIM I'm Happy, And I'm Singing, And A 1, 2, 3, 4 2CD
Restocked. Recorded between 1997-1999 in NY, Osaka, Tokyo, Toronto and Malmö. Originally released on Mego in 2001, Jim O'Rourke's I'm Happy, And I'm Singing, And A 1,2,3,4 is now reissued with a bonus disc featuring unreleased material from the same period, sourced from Jim's vast archive, as well as new artwork. Jim O'Rourke needs no introduction, being well-known as a performer, producer and all-round top chap, as well as a member of various pop and rock combos for more than two decades (Gastr Del Sol, The Red Krayola, Sonic Youth, etc). I'm Happy, And I'm Singing, And A 1,2,3,4 was cited by many common folk at the time as Jim's ultimate laptop record or his Powerbook album. Nowadays, people prefer the simple term "computer" when referring to the instrument used for the creation of this milestone album. Equal parts schizoid pop, cracked minimalism, concrète drama and melancholic contemplation, this is a highly personal release. Given the nature of this warm beast, it appeals across the board -- electronic nuts, indie rock kids, and yes, even the good folk of the established experimental world may take pleasure in the delicate nuances of Jim's hard drive. This reissue is long overdue (the album being out-of-print for 5 years), including a bonus disc featuring unreleased material as well as new artwork. This album will not be available as a download. AMBARCHI, OREN Simian Angel LP
Restocked; LP version. After a trilogy of spectacular explorations of relentlessly driving rhythms -- Sagittarian Domain (EMEGO 144CD/LP, 2012), Quixotism (EMEGO 202CD/LP, 2014), and Hubris (EMEGO 227CD/LP, 2016) -- Simian Angel finds Oren Ambarchi renewing his focus on his singular approach to the electric guitar, returning in part to the spacious canvases of classic releases like Grapes From The Estate (BT 036LP/TO 061CD) while also following his muse down previously unexplored byways. Reflecting Ambarchi's profound love of Brazilian music, Simian Angel features the remarkable percussive talents of Cyro Baptista, a key part of the Downtown scene who has collaborated with everyone from John Zorn and Derek Bailey to Robert Palmer and Herbie Hancock. Like the music of Nana Vasconcelos and Airto Moreira, Simian Angel places Baptista's dexterous and rhythmically nuanced handling of traditional Brazilian percussion instruments into an unexpected musical context. On the first side, "Palm Sugar Candy", Baptista's spare and halting rhythms wind their way through a landscape of gliding electronic tones, gently rising up and momentarily subsiding until the piece's final minutes leave Ambarchi's guitar unaccompanied. While the rich, swirling harmonics of Ambarchi's guitar performance are familiar to listeners from his previous recordings, the subtly wavering, synthetic guitar tone you hear is quite new, coming across at times like an abstracted, splayed-out take on the '80s guitar synth work of Pat Metheny or Bill Frisell. Equally new is the harmonic complexity of Ambarchi's playing, which leaves behind the minimalist simplicity of much of his previous work for a constantly-shifting play between lush consonance and uneasy dissonance. Beginning with a beautiful passage of unaccompanied percussion dominated by the berimbau, the side-long title piece carries on the first side's exploration of subtle, non-linear dynamic arcs, taking the form of a gently episodic suite, in which distinctive moments, like a lyrical passage of guitar-triggered piano, unexpectedly arise from intervals of drifting tones like dream images suddenly cohering. In the piece's second half, the piano tones become increasingly more clipped and synthetic, scattering themselves into aleatoric melodies that call to mind an imaginary collaboration between Albert Marcoeur and David Behrman, grounded all the while by the pulse of Baptista's percussion. Subtle yet complex, fleeting yet emotionally affecting, Simian Angel is an essential chapter in Ambarchi's restlessly exploratory oeuvre. Personnel: Oren Ambarchi - guitars & whatnot; Cyro Baptista - percussion & voice.Recorded by Randall Dunn, Joerg Hiller, Iuri Oriente, and Oren Ambarchi. Photography by Traianos Pakioufakis. Design by Lasse Marhaug. Edited by Joerg Hiller and Oren Ambarchi at Choose Studios, Berlin. Mixed by Joe Talia and Oren Ambarchi at Good Mixture, Tokyo. Cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Executive Producers: Konrad Sprenger and Dick Wolf.

THAYER & JEROME DEUPREE, LLOYD Duets LP
"Mind-blowing set of duo improvisations from a string player once known as the King of the Dobro, and the original drummer for Morphine. Long based in the Boston area, Lloyd Thayer is a master musician as well as a teacher, a street performer (retired, I think) and a collector of esoteric stringed instruments (many of which are played with a slide). We were introduced to his work by Glenn Jones, who more or less grabbed us by the collars and hauled us to see him down at the 1000 Incarnations of the Rose festival. Thayer's set of eastern-tinged material, played on instruments we could not easily name, was absolutely mesmerizing. Glenn made sure we kept in touch, and when Lloyd had some new material ready we got an early listen to it. So, after 30+ CDs and cassettes, Feeding Tube is proud to present the first full-length vinyl LP by the great Lloyd Thayer. Using a Weissenborn-style lap guitar (the same type favored by Fahey) and a gorgeous 22-stringed instrument called a Chaturangui, Lloyd unwinds four long improvs accompanied by the quietly flowing drum work of Jerome Deupree. And if this makes you imagine the incredible blends recorded by Sandy Bull and Billy Higgins back in '63 and '65, you are definitely in the right dreamscape. Deupree has been around for a long time, starting off in the legendary Bar-B-Q Records scene in Bloomington, then new-waving it up in Santa Cruz with the Humans, eventually co-founding Morphine in Boston, while simultaneously moving into jazz with Joe Morris and the Either/Orchestra. Jerome has played on a crazy assortment of records, but the subtle interplay he displays with Lloyd's strings here is a perfect match. The music is beautiful, shifting and abstract. And the song titles are equally interesting. One is a blues for Fahey cohort Al Wilson, another for dobro pioneer Melvyn Marshall. Those make sense. The other two are for hip-hop artist Rammellzee and the British house duo, PBR Street Gang. Lloyd, naturally, claims the PBR Street Gang ref has to do with Martin Sheen's patrol boat in Apocalypse Now. But after the Rammellzee shout-out, who could believe him? Ha. But ultimately, who gives a tinker's cuss? Duets is an album of dizzying accomplishment. Not exactly like anything you've heard before, but such a satisfying spin you'll wonder where it's been all your life." --Byron Coley, 2020 Edition of 200.

OTHER HALF, THE Mr. Pharmacist/I've Come So Far 7"
"This is a licensed reissue on 7" vinyl of the killer single by The Other Half originally issued by GNP Crescendo in 1966 and never repressed since. The Other Half was a 5 pieces band that included the guitar wizard Randy Holden who went on to join Blue Cheer. TOH members were originally from L.A., then moved to San Francisco in the mid-sixties. The Other Half's sound was a brutal but fairly advanced rock interpretation of the R&B performed by British bands such as The Rolling Stones & Them. Although less known, they were really on par with American bands such as Music Machine, the Sonics and the Wailers. 'Mr. Pharmacist' is their best known and much sought-after single. It was covered by The Fall with great success in the '80s. It is an up tempo, mean, hard, relentless R&B number showcasing a sophisticated combination of wild guitars, outstanding drums and powerful vocals. And unbelievable lyrics to match... On the flip side 'I've Come So Far' is a slower number backed with some awesome piano (reminiscing of the Seeds) and great vocals to boot. Irresistible. The reissue is a high quality 45 RPM 7 inch of the original mono mix. A forgotten 1966 Garage masterpiece, essential..."

THOMPSON TRIO WITH JOHN MCLAUGHLIN, DANNY Live In Session 1967 10"
The Danny Thompson Trio, with John McLaughlin, live in session November 1967. The Danny Thompson Trio existed briefly inside of 1967 and by that time, it recalled a much earlier time and place. The trio came together from numerous jazz/R&B avenues featuring now iconic names in Graham Bond, Alexis Korner, Brian Auger, Duffy Power, Georgie Fame, Herbie Goins, and many more. Their combined journeys to this point in November 1967 reveal a who's who of British blues, R&B, and jazz icons, but equally, it is this radio broadcast with Danny Thompson, John McLaughlin, and Tony Roberts that also would provide a vital bridge to the formation of Pentangle. Hi Hat presents the original broadcast of this historic performance from November 1967 with professional re-mastering, background liners and rare period photos. This long-awaited and prized release is a valuable addition to anyone's collection and helps fill another gap in the British folk/jazz/blues genre. Includes insert. Personnel: Danny Thompson - bass; John McLaughlin - guitar; Tony Roberts - tenor sax, flute & bass clarinet.

DAGAR, USTAD ZIA MOHIUDDIN Ragas Abhogi & Vardhani 2LP
Restocked; double LP version. "Around ten years ago, deep into a cozy and hazy night following a concert with my sound brothers Daniel O'Sullivan and Kristoffer Rygg in London (as Æthenor), they graciously introduced me to a recording of rudra veena (a kind of noble deeper bass relative to the sitar, in a way) as performed by dhrupad master Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. Dhrupad, for those who do not know, is a branch of Hindustani classical music said to 'show the raga in its clearest and purest form'. It's pacing concentrates heavily on the slow, contemplative alap section and works with specific microtonal gestures and deep characteristics of resonance . . . In early 2015 I was able to make contact with Zia Mohiuddin Dagar's son Bahauddin and some of his American students/disciples, primarily Jeff Lewis. Over time we developed a friendly and educational exchange, access to a massive archive of recordings and developed these two paired titles for my label . . . I'm proud to be able to reveal these to date unreleased archival recordings of one of the masters of dhrupad, Z. M. Dagar, to the public for the first time. Zia Mohiuddin Dagar was the nineteenth generation in a family tradition known as Dagar gharana, a rich lineage which continued and performed the musical form of dhrupad. Initially, dhrupad was a rigorous, austere, devotional genre that was sung in Hindu temples. But between the 16th and the 18th centuries, it became the preeminent genre in royal courts in North and Central India, and the Dagar gharana developed and continued publicly following the eventual loss of court patronage for dhrupad in the 19th century. The French ethnomusicologist Renaud Brizard covers the story of Zia Mohiuddin Dagar's life and teaching (a long story also in Seattle, my hometown!), the Dagar family and gharana, the rudra veena and more topics in an extensive set of liner notes in this release. Ragas Abhogi & Vardhani were recorded in a private house concert in Seattle at the home of the Benegals in March 1986 (the week before the accompanying release, Raga Yaman (SOMA 029CD/LP), was recorded). The Benegals were friends (and Shantha Benegal was also a student) of Dagarsahib who sometimes hosted Hindustani music concerts in their home. It's a rare glimpse of a more intimate, personal and perhaps different kind of performance considering the form of dhrupad." --Stephen O'Malley, March 2018, Paris, France Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering.

AARP Propaganda LP
Classically trained experimentalist A?rp releases his compositionally expansive and pointedly political debut album via InFiné. Propaganda is an album that rewards repeat listens and inspires research, pushing listeners to look for the truth beyond the headlines. The title Propaganda is inspired in part by the death of a young man in Nantes who drowned following a police altercation at "Fête de la Musique" in 2019. Despite the fact that he was only dancing and there was clear evidence of negligence, the media campaign that followed cleared all involved and disinformation spread, distorting the truth and allowing French authorities to evade any consequence. This blatant and very recent example of press propaganda lead A?rp to explore a multitude of moments in history, each one informing a single track from his new record. Each song title is a direct quote taken from different examples of these moments, from George W. Bush to Margret Thatcher and French philosopher Gilles Deleuze to the infamous Oxycontin commercial by Purdue Pharma. With Propaganda, A?rp is asking his listeners to consider fact, open their minds and to think before spreading questionable news in an era rife with deception, when fabricated click-bait holds more currency than expertise. Musically dense and littered with glistening electronics, Propaganda tells a story as it weaves between epic ambient soundscapes to droning, beat-infused dance. A backbone of glitchy industrial sounds allows it to delve into some dark places while retaining its upbeat and accessible mood.

SKINSHAPE Life & Love CD
"Life & Love is the third album from Skinshape (with Filoxiny being his fourth). Written, Recorded and Produced by Will Dorey at the Arch Studio, London, and in his bedroom. Great melting pot of styles and tunes, D.I.Y. Funk Soul Jazz. Recommended if you're into Khruangbin. Skinshape is the project of British musician William Dorey. The sound has roots in many genres but in particular 1960s-70s funk, soul, reggae, psychedelic rock, Afrobeat and folk. Skinshape grew out of a love for old music and the way it sounded. Initially Dorey experimented with samples (especially drum breaks) to create instrumental hip-hop/trip-hop tracks but then later started to play around with tape machines as a means to create his own 'samples'. This process gave birth to Skinshape with all elements being recorded by Dorey since the first self-titled album released in 2014. Aside from the Skinshape project Dorey was bassist for the band Palace from 2014-2017 and runs a reggae label called Horus Records based in North London."

The instrumentals peppered throughout like the Quentin Tarantino-esque gem 'Mandala' and Motown reminiscing 'Rubber Gloves' highlight Dorey's superb talent as an arranger and composer. Don't let the vintage sound fool you either. All of his magic is original, without a sample in sight. Every instrument either played by Dorey himself, or his array of guest friend musicians. For the Oracolo artwork, Skinshape joined forces with acclaimed New York based artist Jared Buschang. This is one of Buschang's early pieces simply named 'Untitled'. The initial plan was to travel to various African nations to record Umoja. This proved to be an unnecessary step because Skinshape's hometown of London ended up bearing many fruits. It was a challenging project for Dorey taking a year and a half of dedicated work to complete with many ideas left unfinished along the way. The album has a very global feel which was enhanced at the end of the process by a collaboration with Japanese painter Ken-ichi Omura. FLAMIN' GROOVIES Live From The Vaillancourt Fountains September 19, 1979 CD
"The Flamin' Groovies perform live at the Vaillencourt Fountain with the same line-up as the group that recorded for Seymour Stein on Sire Records. The fountain is located in Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco and was completed two years after the Groovies played there. It may be best known for a 1987 concert by U2, just starting their Joshua Tree tour, when Bono famously spray painted on the fountain and was both praised and criticized for his actions. This soundboard recording was confusingly called 'Jumpin' In The Night', otherwise known as 'Valencourt Plaza' where it was recorded. The concert serves to document a typical Groovies gig of the time with staples like 'Shake Some Action', 'Tell Me Again' and 'First Plane Home', covers of 'Feel A Whole Lot Better', Moby Grape's 'Fall On You', the odd Beatles and even NRBQ's 'I Want You Bad'. The performance was broadcast live on KSAN."

FLAMIN' GROOVIES Now CD
"While it took a long and torturous five years for the Flamin' Groovies to find their way back to an American record deal with Shake Some Action, a year and a half later the band had a follow-up ready, and while 1978's Flamin' Groovies Now isn't quite as cohesive as the album that preceded it, in many respects the band sounds at once tighter and more relaxed, with some time on the road firming up the rhythm section while giving the songs a bit more room to swing (which wasn't one of the strong suits of the British Invasion bands that provided their aural template). The band lost guitarist James Ferrell during the post-Shake Some Action tour, but former Charlatans picker Mike Wilhelm proved to be a more than simpatico replacement on these sessions, and while leader Cyril Jordan didn't come up with another new song as transcendent as 'Shake Some Action,' 'All I Wanted' comes pretty close. But it's significant that most of the songs on Flamin' Groovies Now are covers, and while all of them are played with love, enthusiasm, and the right period flair (especially the Beatles' 'There's a Place,' Paul Revere & the Raiders' 'Ups and Downs,' and 'Move It,' an early U.K. hit for Cliff Richard), they give the album a feeling of being padded, and just because covering the Rolling Stones rarity 'Blue Turns to Grey' was a good idea didn't mean the Flamin' Groovies had any business tackling 'Paint It Black.' All in all, Flamin' Groovies Now is a terrific-sounding record that captures a fine band when it was in great form, but it also makes clear that the gremlins that often dogged the Groovies in the studio (namely their inability to make a 100 percent satisfying album) hadn't gone away."

PENTANGLE Live On Air 1967-1969 LP
London Calling presents Pentangle's Live On Air 1967-1969, including performances from the Danny Thompson Trio with John McLaughlin. The high profile names of John Renbourn and Bert Jansch remain coveted enough to warrant excitement at any retrospective release, but combined with Danny Thompson and Jacqui McShee, this is a delightful insight into one of Britain's finest folk rock bands to emerge in the late '60s. Pentangle's legacy lies in an abundance of fragile, acoustic wonder spanning six albums with Transatlantic and Reprise Records from 1968 to 1972. Between the studio, television and festival appearances, Pentangle visited venues such as the Playhouse Theatre and Paris Theatre for the BBC. WEATHER REPORT Live In Cologne 1983 DVD
"To celebrate the 40th 'birthday' of one of the world's best bands -- Weather Report -- the label Art of Groove is releasing the band's Rockpalast concert in Cologne 1983 -- a premiere on DVD. What a feast the concert was for the Cologne-based audience that night, and is now for us all these years later. As Omar Hakim has said: 'Weather Report wasn't typical instrumental music: there was Europe, Africa, jazz, blues, Latin, all inside one thing. It was true world music...'' Here's to that! After Jaco Pastorius and Peter Erskine left the band, Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter decided to continue their successful project with a new rhythm set: drummer Omar Hakim, Victor Bailey on bass and percussionist Jose Rossy. For Bailey and Hakim it was the starting point of their international career. Weather Report's Cologne concert shows the band in musical top form. In a more than two-hour show, the band sparks a firework of rhythm and melodies. Next to classics like 'Birdland,' in this concert you will hear pieces from later phase of Weather Report: 'D Flat Waltz,' 'Procession,' 'Fast City,' 'Where The Moon Goes' and 'Two Lines'. The material which was originally recorded by the WDR (West German Radio and Television Broadcasting) has been completely restored and re-mastered and is now appearing in a new version --something that's not just for long-time fans of Weather Report."

MINAEMINAE Gestrupp LP
"On this seven track album we hear MinaeMinae (alias Bastian Epple) playfully scurry through his dense soundscapes on a tightrope. The sounds lying somewhere on the crossroads of psychedelic trance, exotica, ambient and melodic dance music -- veering further off orbit with nontypical rhythms and dystopian percussive patterns. MinaeMinae understands musical material similar to documentary footage which he would cut up, repitch, and rearrange freely. Most of his tracks are a mix of analog, synthetic sounds and recordings of ethnic percussion and guitar. Recently Bastian began experimenting with modular synthesis and self-made tape echoes -- seeking a more reduced and minimal composition style compared to his earlier quite whimsical tunes. Growing up in a small village in southern Germany, Bastian was never interested in kitschy folk sounds that everyone would mindlessly clap and sing along to, rather he took solace in the time he would spend delving into patterns and repetitions that pleased him. His guitar strumming and what sounded to his mother like a young Philip Glass on a cheap Casio keyboard encouraged little Epple to continue on this self-taught path of developing his musical language. He then started to experiment with a tape recorder and layering sounds with non-musical samples, which his former village friends found too weird -- then to eventually working with a small freeware DAW. Bastian went on to study Media Art at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe -- initially enrolled in music but the frustration and doubt of not being able to produce the music he wanted led him into film and documentary media. During his studies, Bastian was living with Florian Meyers (Don't DJ) for several years where they would philosophize life and music into the wee hours -- he encouraged Bastian to start sharing what he's been quietly working on all these years and slowly emerge from this anonymity which eventually led to his first release on Human Pitch last fall. Disproportionate forms, color changes, backdrops weaved into the foreground, all lay the dense earth for Gestrüpp through Benjamin Kilchhofer's artwork."

After KMD (his first group)'s 1994 sophomore album Bl_ck B_st_rds was shelved by Elektra in 1994 and his blood brother Subroc (one half of the sibling rap duo) passed away, surviving frontman Zev Love X mutated into the MC Avenger known as MF DOOM and the Rap world is better for it. FOWLEY, KIM Living In The Streets LP
This reissue is a collaboration between Munster Records and Disques Mono-Tone. With a career that includes hits as producer ("Alley Oop" by The Hollywood Argyles), songwriter ("Nut Rocker" by B Bumble & The Stingers), recordings with Gene Vincent, Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers, and countless others, his early management of The Runaways and plenty of glorious failures along the way, Kim Fowley has been a maverick presence in rock n' roll history for over fifty years. Living In The Streets (1977) is a compilation of his solo recordings, some of them dating back to the beginning of the decade. "Born to Make You Cry" and "Thunder Road" -- recorded in collaboration with Mars Bonfire -- had first appeared on a single on Original Sound in 1970. As had "Big Bad Cadillac" (a homage to Vince Taylor's "Brand New Cadillac") and "Man Without A Country", released under the name King Lizard, and recorded in Sweden while he was producing Wigwam's Tombstone Valentine album (1970). Originally released on Chattahoochee in 1973 under the alias Jimmy Jukebox, "Motorboat" is now regarded as a Fowley classic. That song and its B-side, "25 Hours A Day" was written and recorded in collaboration with his good friend Michael Lloyd, who Fowley had been making records with since the mid-sixties. "California Summertime" and "Hollywood Nights" were recorded in 1974 at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood and released as a single on the Now label under the unlikely sobriquet of Lance Romance. Three songs -- plus the spoken piece "Sex, Dope and Violence" -- made their debut on the album: "Summertime Frog", "Love Bomb", and "Living In The Streets". All are acoustic and show a certain Captain Beefheart flavor, the former, and some Dylanesque influence, the later. "Living In The Streets" remains a worthy monument to the seventies recordings of the Dorian Gray of rock n' roll, the human jukebox: the unstoppable Kim Fowley. Includes an insert with extensive notes by Mike Stax (Ugly Things Magazine) and features its original artwork.

RIBA, PAU Ars Erotica 7"
As a follow-up to Munster Records' previous work reissuing the recordings of Pau Riba, key figure in Catalonia's counter-culture and music scene, Munster presents Ars Erótica, one of his most sought-after singles, in the 50th anniversary of its original release. This is a mysterious and surprising record that was originally released on Concèntric and featured alternative edits of two songs previously included on his classic album Dioptria/1. "Ars Erotica (non est mihi)" is edited to last just under five minutes, after taking out some verses and arrangements, although keeping intact its psychedelic folk-rock essence, with plenty of fuzz guitars. On the flipside you find possibly the most interesting recording on this single, clearly showing what the vibe and work method were at the studio: all the musicians playing simultaneously in a chilled-out atmosphere. This edit of "Rosa d'abril (l'amor s'hi posa)" starts right in the same point where the album edit finishes, with Pau Riba backed by the band Om jamming and some of the guest friends at the studio joining in, including the film producer and script writer Joaquim Jordà, who Riba wrote this song for.

GAY INTRUDERS, THE In The Race/It's Not Today 7"
Marc Jonson was 19 years old when he made his extraordinary debut album, Years, for Vanguard Records. But his first professional recording session took place several years earlier, in 1966, when he laid down this savage slice of primitive Bo Diddley-fied punk with his teenage garage band, The Gay Intruders. In the United Artists building (NYC) there was a small recording studio, Dick Charles Recording Services, and it was there that the Gay Intruders recorded "In the Race" in August 1966. The tough rocker "It's Not Today" dates from the same period, 1967. "The basic track was recorded at my house back then," says Marc Jonson, "and I just recently added more guitars. Vocals were added to the original vocal, but the harmonica was from back then."

ATTRIX Lost Lenore/Hard Times 7"
Reminiscent of early Velvet Underground, Attrix were one of Brighton's most active groups in the vibrant local scene during the early days of punk. Rick Blair, the mastermind behind the band, would work for a time at the Brighton and Hove Community Resource Centre, just above The Vault, a crypt which was the headquarters of the local punk/squatter movement where many musicians would their equipment and rehearse. His connections with the scene would lead him to set up a record shop and an independent label, Attrix Records, home to this debut release -- and only vinyl recording -- by his own band. Both tracks on this homemade looking 7" originally released in 1978 are no short of raw vocals and fierce guitars but the band shows also had pop hooks to spare... First ever reissue.

DJ MAESTRO PRESENTS NINA SIMONE Little Girl Blue Remixed 2LP
"Perhaps not as well known to the general public, Bethlehem Records earned its place in jazz history with the release of debut albums from artists like Carmen McRae, Chris Connor, Herbie Mann and Johnny Hartman. Besides that, check those early covers -- pure art! Bethlehem's most famous release is the 1958 debut album by Nina Simone, Little Girl Blue. So, when DJ Maestro got the chance to remix this album, he was thrilled. Soon he got the idea to ask some of his favorite producers to collaborate, like Mop Mop, Renegades of Jazz, Gramophonedzie, Fab Samperi, The Reflex and Mees Dierdorp. One thing they all had in common: excitement to work with the original recordings from this iconic album. The result is 14 remixes, each with a unique approach to the original song, and all with a contemporary feel. Little Girl Blue Remixed is available as a limited edition of 500 individually numbered copies on transparent vinyl."

This is the second volume from the historical Uppsala concert in September 1961. An important document from Eric Dolphy's first Swedish tour as leader of a local and yet ultra-dynamic quartet featuring Rony Johansson (piano), Kurt Lindgren (bass), and Rune Carlsson (drums). This second chapter consists of four long tracks including classic standards such as "Out of Nowhere" and "I'll Remember April". Essential harmonic structures for Dolphy's highly adventurous improvisations on alto sax, bass clarinet, and flute.

J.B.'S, THE These Are The J.B.'s CD
"This album is the Rosetta Stone of funk's dominant idioms, yet its existence has barely been a rumor. In 1970 James Brown perfectly captured a definitive moment in modern music when he ordered Bootsy Collins into the studio to record the tracks that would be test pressed on King Records as These Are The J.B.'s. This album is the epitome of funk music, Brown's innovation that influenced everything that came after it, from Afro-beat to disco to hip-hop. And if there is any funk ensemble as influential as Brown's, in the post-'Cold Sweat' musical landscape, it's the Parliament/Funkadelic contingent. Those two streams, as Grammy Winning James Brown historian Alan Leeds details in this album's liner notes, converged for the first time here. This link between Brown's funk and all that followed features Bootsy and his young band running through twelve-minute instrumental take of Marva Whitney's 'It's My Thing,' replete with blues chord changes, alongside interpretations of the Meters, Kool and the Gang and none other than Jimi Hendrix. This is a young band's James Brown-turned-on-his-head style of funk that they nail in a one-minute vamp that pre-dates their obscure but important work as the Houseguests ensemble and embodies the essence of the psychedelic-flavored music that would propel them into the orbit of George Clinton and his mothership, where they poked cosmic holes in funk's polyrhythmic ozone layer in the mid-1970s. There are only two extant copies of the original King Records test press LP of These Are The J.B.'s. The first commercial issue of this album, was overseen by Now-Again's Egon alongside Leeds and Universal Music Group's James Brown expert Harry Weinger. It was mastered specifically for vinyl by Elysian Master's Dave Cooley from the original two-track stereo master that James Brown and his engineer Ron Lenhoff delivered to production forty-four years ago."

DO NASCIMENTO, FABIANO Preludio CD
"Prelúdio is the third album Now-Again Records will issue from the thrilling, young Brazilian guitarist Fabiano do Nascimento. Produced by Mario Caldato, Jr. and Luther Russell and engineered and mixed by Caldato and Jason Hiller, this album features do Nascimento's longtime drummer Ricardo 'Tiki' Pasillas. It is the first album of solely do Nascimento's own compositions and, like his previous albums Dança dos Tempos and Tempo dos Mestres, follows folkloric Brazilian music, Brazilian jazz, bossa-nova and samba as experienced through the mind and able fingers of an expansive musician, combing the heady '60s and '70s experimentalism of Hermeto Pascoal and Baden Powell with the childlike elegance of music played and passed down by native Brazilians for generations. Do Nascimento was born into a musical family, from lineage that stretches back to his great-grand-father Ladario Teixeira, a blind saxophonist who contributed to the re-creation of the instrument by adding more keys to the older incarnation of the instrument in the early 20th century. He was born in Rio de Janeiro and grew up there and in Sao Paulo, where he found inspiration in his uncle, the late Lúcio Nascimento, bassist and composer in Leny Andrade's band Bom de Três. While he came from a musical pedigree, he's largely self-taught, largely in the service of an overarching mission to showcase the folkloric music of his home country as he continues to develop possibilities for language of the guitar itself. His studies ramped up after he moved to Los Angeles in 2001. His first champion was Aloe Blacc, who worked with do Nascimento over the years, including his work on his debut album Shine Through for Stones Throw Records. His collaborators now include Madlib, multi-instrumentalist Sam Gandel, Innovative Leisure chanteuse Claude Fontaine and legendary Brasilian percussionist, bandleader, songwriter and catalyst Airto Moreira. Moreiera states that Nascimento is 'Brazilian but (his mind is) from a place in Brazil that is not common. Fortunately, we still have some musicians who like to play music and who like to touch the instrument and who like that energy! You see, because that's the most important thing in music. The energy. That's why I love to play live. And that's why I'm playing with Fabiano.'"

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE, RAY Let's Talk CD
"Renowned for its enviable combination of musical muscle and malleability, guitarist/songwriter Raymond Alexander Jenkins' tight four-piece unit was so revered on the uptown club circuit that it was offered the opportunity to serve as the Apollo Theater house band. Jenkins demurred, hopeful and confident in his group's chances at making it on its own, and Let's Talk is the sublime result of their hard work. Independently released and recorded with a distinctly lo-fi charm, it is a collection of unabashedly sincere songs that perfectly encapsulates the era's heady milieu of Black pride and cultural awareness, and the plaintive emotion of struggling to realize dreams whilst navigating a city and neighborhood in decline. Personal tragedy coupled with Jenkins' inability to gain traction as a musician, would haunt him for years. But Let's Talk's reputation would eventually spread via word-of-mouth praise amongst soul and funk connoisseurs and record collectors. Now elevated to exalted status, it may finally be more widely appreciated as a testament to Jenkins' gifts."

Black vinyl pressing. Optic Nerve present a reissue of Razorcuts' Storyteller, originally released in 1988. Storyteller, which saw release in February of '88, arguably is the best album to come from the generation of indie pop bands to which Razorcuts belonged. Most of their peers tended to falter beyond the convenient restrictions of singles and EPs, but Storyteller, whether by luck or design, hangs together as a complete work, not a moment of its 35 minutes wasted or excess to requirements. Indeed, there are few lovelier songs from that year than "Brighter Now", "Jade", and the title track. Includes original album plus eight additional tracks on the second disc. Remastered. BARKER Utility 2LP
2020 repress; double LP version. "We all dance away our lives to the tune of the sovereign pleasure-pain axis." --David Pearce, The Hedonistic ImperativePleasure-seeking and pain-avoidance as a rave metaphor fits the music of Sam Barker. The Berghain resident and Leisure System co-founder has spent the last few years exploring the euphoric potential of altering key variables in dance music formulas. This was especially true on his 2018 Ostgut Ton debut EP Debiasing (OSTGUT 112EP), which was flush with unconventional rhythmic chord stabs, melody, and percussion but devoid of kickdrums. What seemed like an experimental exercise on paper was in reality equally geared towards the club: tracks that worked for the floor but resisted the genre categorizations that kick drums often provide. This has come to define Barker's sound. Now, on his debut solo album Utility, Barker turns his focus toward melding experimentation and dancefloor pragmatism with the psychology behind the musical decision-making process. In his own words: "After Debiasing it occurred to me that my musical decisions were often unintentionally utilitarian, following an instinct to maximize pleasure in one way or another. It's sort of unfashionable to admit, but by removing elements that have strong genre associations, this became a natural consequence." Accordingly, Utility is a playful but non-ironic musical approach to a whole spectrum of utilitarian and transhumanist ideas: from models for quantifying pleasure and "gradients of bliss" to abolishing suffering for sentient beings (not just people) through the ethical use of drugs and nanotechnology. Over nine tracks, Barker's vision ebbs-and-flows through waves of deeply psychedelic musical vignettes; free-floating and futuristic melodies and rhythms as targeted brain stimulation. The sound draws heavily on modular synthesis, as well as self-built mechanical instruments and plate reverbs to create atmospheres that are at once alien and emotionally recognizable, functional, and utopian. Utility is by no means a concept album. Instead, it is an honest take on music as both pleasure-maximizer and consciousness-expander.

LEIMER, K. A Figure Of Loss CD
"A Figure Of Loss takes K. Leimer's music into highly personal terrain. Written and recorded during two dark years, the resulting work hovers in proximity of a calm and placid consistency, tenuously balanced on expanding and contracting foundations. Built mostly around modeled and treated piano and digital synthesis, a sense of coherence emerged from piece to piece during the recording and editing process, yielding a sustained, but disturbed elegiac atmosphere, seemingly content to meditate on its own specific set of limits. But A Figure Of Loss reaches from well-defined patterns to fragmented and shifting densities. This is a music of reflection, setting itself at a distance from loss in order to possibly comprehend it. The CD includes a portfolio of photographs by Tyler Boley and a download code for the entire album. It was mastered by James Savage. K. Leimer founded Palace Of Lights in 1979. Leimer's work has also been issued by Autumn, First Terrace, Les Giants, Invisible Inc., Origin Peoples and RVNG. His early cassette work is included in the critically acclaimed VOD box set American Cassette Culture and is included in Cherry Red's Noise Floor series. Leimer has been actively producing music since the mid-1970s -- his current catalog includes eighteen solo albums plus collaborative albums with Savant and Marc Barreca. His work is included in the collection of The British Library."

O'ROURKE, JIM Shutting Down Here LP
Shutting Down Here is a special work. Symbolically, it covers a period of thirty years, between two visits by Jim O'Rourke to the GRM, the first, as a young man fascinated by the institution and his repertoire, the second, as an accomplished musician, influential and imbued with an aura of mystery. Shutting Down Here is a piece shaped like a universe, a heterogeneous world in which collides the multiple musical facets of Jim O'Rourke: instrumental writing, field recordings, electronic textures, and cybernetic becomings, dynamic spaces, harmonic spaces, silent spans. This variety of approach, strangely, does not in any way weaken the coherence of the whole and this is the talent of Jim O'Rourke, a talent, properly speaking, of composition, where all the sound elements compete and participate to stakes that exceed them and of a common destiny, that is to say of an apparition. Due to the wide dynamic levels, please adjust your volume accordingly.Released in association with Editions Mego. Coordination GRM: François Bonnet, Jules Négrier. RAILTON/MAX EILBACHER, LUCY Forma / Metabolist Meter (Foster, Cottin, Caetani and a Fly) LP
"Forma" by Lucy Railton is a work that burrows deep inside. It disorientates and teases, without malice. Its beauty lies in gentle projections, which, though subtle, leave deep impressions, like the wings of a nocturnal moth reflecting dark light. Its path, too, is unpredictable, but such disorientation is not a reflection of chaos. Instead, a mysterious intention appears through an imperious unfolding -- its logic escapes us, but nevertheless captivates us. It is the story of a becoming of forms, as well as of their fading away and their appearance as a disappearance. "Forma", for multichannel tape and live cello. Commissioned by INA GRM and first performed on the Acousmonium at INA GRM's Multiphonies Concert Series, Maison de la Radio, Paris on June 1st 2019. Cello recorded live in concert, performed by Lucy Railton. Serge Synthesiser recorded at GRM Studios in April 2019. Organ recorded in Skálholt Cathedral, Iceland, by Alex Bonney, performed by Kit Downes in 2017. All other materials recorded, mixed and created by Lucy Railton at GRM Studios and in her Berlin studio between November 2018 and May 2019. Mix by Lucy Railton/Premaster by Emmanuel Richier (GRM). Photo by George Nebieridze. Part of Re-Imagine Europe, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union."Metabolist Meter (Foster, Cottin, Caetani and a Fly)", by Max Eilbacher, is a teeming piece, a matrix where textures and structures merge together, where the polyrhythmic instances become timbre, where the formal abstraction of the harmonic volutes coagulates around a vibrating form that is actualized in the dramatic reality of a dying fly. And this formal mastery is not disembodied in Max Eilbacher's work and the kaleidoscopic forms of the sound spectra that he has deployed know how to resonate in the sensations and experiences of each one. OLD TOWER The Last Eidolon CD
"The third album by the enigmatic Old Tower, The Last Eidolon, tells a somber story of a kingdom laid to waste by its own creator through the corruption of dark magic and possession of destructive spirits. Because of wrongful decisions, spiritual rebellion and the misuse of ancient yet dangerous practices these malevolent forces started to turn against the enchanter. And so fell his once proud and powerful dominion. What was once great has now been reduced to a hollow manifestation of its old self. The long and weary process of reclaiming its former glory has begun. Throughout the 'Grim Alchemy' trilogy, smithed in conspiracy with the mighty Hospital Productions, The Specter meticulously crafted his own style of medieval dark ambient. The Last Eidolon is an elongation but also a new direction of this concept and will take the listener on a desolate journey spanning three, long chapters. Faded memories of a dark past will shimmer in and out of existence throughout these epic compositions yet the energy of renewal is flowing from the fountains of the old kingdom. "The debut collaboration album from doom metal giants Bell Witch and Aerial Ruin (the solo folk project of singer/songwriter Erik Moggridge), under the moniker of Stygian Bough is a culmination of the work of both artists as witnessed previously on Bell Witch's three full-length albums, where Moggrdige has contributed guest vocals. With each succeeding Bell Witch release, one has seen Moggridge's involvement with the band developing, growing and getting more elaborate. This release, produced by Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Wolves In The Throne Room, Anna Von Hausswolff), follows up Bell Witch's colossal Mirror Reaper opus with Moggrdige actually being involved in the creative and writing process with the band duo of Dylan Desmond (bass/vocals) and Jesse Shreibman (drums/synthesizers/vocals). Not only does Stygian Bough expand and broaden this alliance between the artists, but with Aerial Ruin contributing to the songwriting of this dedicated collaboration and incorporating his signature and alluring style of emotionally-driven folk, along with taking the lead vocal position, adding to the band's caliber of unearthly towering doom, this album becomes its own singular, unparalleled doom metal entity."

ROSACEAE Efia LP
Efia, the sophomore album by Rosaceae, picks up where the Hamburg-based sound artist's 2019 debut on Neoprimitive left off, further exploring the topics that had already informed Nadia's Escape. From its confrontative front cover to the eight tracks on the album, Efia is fully dedicated to the motif of resistance, but does not exhaust itself in polemics. Rather, it masterfully translates the complexities of its underlying central themes into a visceral narrative. Efia was originally conceived as a commissioned work for the 2019 edition of Hamburg's Noisexistance festival and departed from a sentence uttered in the British 1980s TV show Sapphire & Steel which inspired cultural theorist Mark Fisher in his analysis of what he had coined "hauntology," a term originally coined by the Algerian-French philosopher Jacques Derrida in the early 1990s: "There is no time here, not anymore." The album again showcases Rosaceae's knack for combining abstract experimental sound art with a form of storytelling that had already been at the center of Nadia's Escape and which relies on both verbal and musical means of giving a voice to the voiceless. The disembodied voice of -- amongst others -- Jesseline Preach and manipulated vocal samples blend in with dense soundscapes, elements of neue musik and occasional pure harsh noise. It's a mix that deliberately puts different artistic traditions into a dialogue with each other: the hallmarks of European salon culture are confronted with Kurdish wedding music and the unnerving loop of someone demanding a "Zugabe" ("encore"). Thus, Efia not only blurs the lines between cultural and regional traditions, but also conjures up the ghosts of a past, ghosts that are more than ready to haunt the timeless present trying so hard to repress the atrocities happening at its fringes. As a whole, this makes Efia both a chilling work of sound art and a vibrant political statement fueled by burning hot energy.

FUTURE BEAT ALLIANCE Beginner's Mind 2LP
Almost ten years after his last solo album (2009), Matthew Puffett aka Future Beat Alliance makes a long-overdue return with new album Beginner's Mind. The deeply immersive nine-track album is an invitation to "slow down, think mindfully, and see more clearly." Over the course of a career that started in 1996, Matthew Puffett has taken great inspiration from Detroit futurism, mixed it up with his own UK perspective and become synonymous with soulful techno and electro that gazes off into the cosmos. His always emotive, melodic sounds have made for electrifying EPs and absorbing long players on esteemed labels like Tresor, Delsin, Versatile, and Rush Hour, as well as self-releasing on his own Reward System imprint. The last ten years have seen Puffett working closely and collaborating on James Lavelle's UNKLE project. The resulting body of work includes co-writing and programming UNKLE`s fifth studio album, The Road: Part 1 (2017), various film projects and advertising campaigns, and remixing a list of high-profile artists. During this period, UNKLE were winners of the "MPG Remixer Of The Year" award in 2016, 2018, and 2020. In the background, Matthew continued to make his own music and always looked to grow, evolve, and infuse his sounds with new techniques and understanding. It was a collection of this music that eventually got crafted and shaped into new album Beginner's Mind. Puffett's most cohesive record to date is a soothing, escapist listen in these uncertain times and will slow the minds and swell the hearts of all who hear it.

NIBLOCK, PHILL G2,44+/X2 CD/BOOK
Room40 present a reissue of Phill Niblock's G2,44+/X2, originally released in 2002. Matte laminate embossed sleeve; includes insert card and 24-page book with liner notes from Bill Meyer, interview, and photos. Design by Traianos Pakioufakis.Liner notes from Bill Meyer: "In 2001, Phill Niblock wrote, 'You should play the music very loud. If the neighbors don't complain, it's probably not loud enough.' In 2019, Niblock can no longer host his annual six hour-long solstice concert at the Experimental lntermedia loft; not only did the neighbors complain, the landlord sued. But the validity of his prescription is undiminished, for it takes sonic volume and spatial confinement to unlock his music's true nature. Give the sound waves a boost and something hard to smack against, and they begin to shiver and multiply so that tones transform tones and every turn of the head (or every new room) yields a new listening experience. But 'Guitar Too, For Four' is notable in Niblock's oeuvre for its independence from loudness. While it sounds great turned up, the additive process that yielded the CD's two versions has resulted in music that changes most rewardingly, even when heard at modest volume. Victor Frankl opined that in the hierarchy of essential human motivations, meaning eclipses pleasure. In some ways, this music hews closer to the pleasure principle. Once you let go of the yearning for tunes and grooves, it's a sensuous delight to dunk yourself in the warm sound-bath of his music. And Niblock would be the first person to scotch any efforts to assign the sort of cosmic significance that certain other drone-oriented minimalists did to their art. But consider this notion; Niblock's music is fundamentally social. It only truly happens in spaces where people gather. While he does much of the composing and assembling of this music alone, Niblock didn't treat 'Guitar Too, For Four' as finished until he got some more people in on the act. He asked Rafael ToraI and Jim O'Rourke to contribute to a CD edition. And when O'Rourke declined to play on his own production, but instead invited Kevin Drumm, Alan Licht, Thurston Moore, and Lee Renaldo to do the honors, Niblock's reaction was the more, the merrier. To the extent that connecting people is an essentially meaningful activity, this music is the connective tissue of meaning."

GUIDED BY VOICES Vampire on Titus LP
"We are pleased to announce a new vinyl pressing of the classic Guided By Voices album, Vampire on Titus. Although there were several different pressings in the 1990s, this is the first since 1998. This edition features a new master cut at Golden, is packaged in a sturdy tip-on jacket, and includes Bob's original insert, now enlarged to a more readable size. A limited quantity will be available on opaque yellow vinyl, the remainder virgin black. Originally released in 1993, Vampire was not unique at that time in its 4 track recording methodology, but it was perhaps the first to garner major media attention. Many minds were blown, and a few were baffled enough to return the album to the store, believing the crude sound meant their copy was defective. Vampire occupies a unique place in the GBV discography. The album is a snapshot of a brief time in the band's history, a turning point after having broken up the previous year. It does not include any older or last-minute material. Although sonically consistent, the songs exhibit tremendous variety, skirting several genres and many moods. The lineup is just a trio: Robert Pollard and brother Jimmy with Tobin Sprout. Although it could be described as one of GBV's 'difficult' LPs, it has several songs that could've been standouts on Bee Thousand or Alien Lanes. It was their first album that was not self-released. It is an innocent album, unaware of its audience, and fearless to the core as only true outsiders can be. As such, Vampire on Titus is an essential piece for even the more casual fan of the band. It's also just a damn good album that's held up to repeated listens for a quarter century."

Arguably one of the world's most important underground dance music producer/DJs Theo Parrish lends his hands to selecting and mixing a set of jazz and funk records licensed from and originally released on the Black Jazz label 1971-1976. Revered by a wide spectrum of dedicated music fanatics, he is known for his otherworldly DJ sets, and his serious approach to DJing as an art form. Theo gives special attention to fellow Chicago musicians The Awakening (three consecutive tracks, four total on the mix), one of the best funk/fusion groups that the Black Jazz label released, and whose only output was on that label. HARRIS/ROBERT QUINE, JODY Escape LP
Sorcerer Records present the first reissue of Jody Harris and Robert Quine's Escape, originally released on the New York based No Wave label Infidelity (Lust/Unlust subsidiary) label in 1981. Jody made his name on the NY scene mainly through his work with the legendary avant-funksters, The Contortions, while Robert Quine, who sadly passed away in 2004, was one of the most acclaimed guitarists of his day, noted for his work with Richard Hell & The Voidoids, Lou Reed, Tom Waits, John Zorn, Matthew Sweet, and many more. The two recorded Escape in Quine's apartment with a whopping budget of $7 (that's what it cost Quine for the tape). The album sees them both engaging in guitar duels over a primitive drum machine, a kind of skeletal minimal-synth with avant-guitar excursions overhead. Outward-bound yet wholly listenable, the five tracks represent a great lost gem of the NYC underground scene of the day. Recommended to fans of No Wave, Rhys Chatham, Suicide, and the music of Robert Quine and Jody Harris, of course. This edition also comes with an inner sleeve featuring liner notes from Jody Harris detailing the recording, as well as exclusive photographs of the two. Remastered by Mikey Young and fully authorized by Jody Harris and Robert's brother, Van. Edition of 600.

PINCH Reality Tunnels CD
Influential Bristol figurehead Rob Ellis, AKA Pinch, releases his first solo album in 13 years, via his own label, Tectonic. Reality Tunnels is a concept that was originally introduced by Robert Anton Wilson in his 1983 book Prometheus Rising. In essence, the concept of a reality tunnel relates to an idea on how we create our own perspective -- the subjective filter that we each apply to the world around us; the things we perceive and what our consciousness deems worthy of attention, IE what we see and hear is entirely relative to what we do not. At points angular and uncompromising with levels in the red, frequencies pushed out and EQ curves stretched into strange new shapes, Pinch mixes both low and hi-fi on this boldly distinct sonic statement. It sees him flexing years of production skills -- but unconventionally so -- knowing well that safe predictability and rounded polish don't get the most interesting results. Dark trip hop Bristolia segues into blistering jungle on album opener "Entangled Particles", before planet-hopping onto the spiky insidious grime-step of "All Man Got", featuring the rugged rasp of OG warhorse Trim. Beginning a triptych of future techno, "Accelerated Culture" offers the album's most relatively straightforward moment, albeit one of scorching, anthemic dancefloor heat. Delving deeper into the vortex is the synapse sparking wobbler "Returnity", before "Finding Space" reaches to the cosmos' far-flung, glowing outlands. Back to an urban reality is "Party", where a subtly menacing sense of dread is ignited by Killa P's incremental flow, which ramps-up and pairs-back the intensity in unexpected ways. Still moving freely between different realities, "Back To Beyond" is beautiful gloaming ambience, executed with equal fine-tuned grace as the genre's masters. Jamaican vocalist Inezi lends sweet tones to the slow burning, roots-meets-modern-bass spiritual "Change Is A Must", and on "Non-Terrestrial Forms" an atmospheric, misty steppers intro segues stealthily into fiercely dystopian, amen-fueled jungle tekno; marking one of several surprise attacks on the album, where a subtle-slight-of hand shoots the intensity level dynamically up. Closing as it begins, the album is bookended by a piece that recalls the dark, intricate soundscapes of Massive Attack's Mezzanine (1998) and Tricky's Maxinquaye (1995) -- found here in the scorched, smoky rocker "The Last One". Also features Emika and Nive Nielsen.

WILLIS, BUTCH Amateur On Plastic DVD
"A documentary film from Mark Robinson (Unrest, Teen-Beat), about his favorite rock star, Butch Willis. Butch Willis is a Washington, D.C. rock legend. Born and raised in 1960s suburban Maryland, he came of age in the late '70s post-hippie subculture. After sharing an apartment with infamous local music icon Root Boy Slim, Butch was inspired to become a rock n' roll star himself. The unique and unusual brand of 'outsider music' that Butch Willis & The Rocks created captivated the local music scene beginning with their appearance at the seminal Primitive Night in 1984. Amateur On Plastic chronicles Butch's life and career from the beginning all the way through to present day. It features a host of Butch-appointed band managers Joe Lee (Joe's Record Paradise), Jeff Mentges (No Trend), Jeff Krulik (Heavy Metal Parking Lot), and director Mark Robinson (Unrest/Teen-Beat). Also co-starring is Al Breon, the Rocks' innovative 'throat guitarist.' The film combines archival footage, interviews, and performances of his hit songs 'Drugs,' 'The Garden's Outside,' 'TV's From Outer Space,' and 'The Girl's on My Mind.' Amateur On Plastic also parallels the 1990's era of seminal indie record label Teen-Beat. Behind-the-scenes glimpses of the label's concerts and private parties provide much of the background and feature members of the bands Unrest, Versus, Tuscadero and more."

"Giles Corey is the gloomy, stripped-down solo project of Dan Barrett, one of the masterminds behind the cult act Have A Nice Life. Dealing with issues like suicide, depression, and the paranormal, Giles Corey is both incredibly bleak and intimate. Two years after the project's self-titled debut, Barrett recorded three minimalist tracks before a series of live performances, releasing them as Hinterkaifeck. Hinterkaifeck was released in February 2013 by Enemies List Home Recordings, and has existed exclusively as a digital release until now. The title is a reference to a gruesome and mysterious mass murder that took place on a remote farm in 1922 near Munich, Germany. "Vanguard musicians have long been fascinated with the liminal state. From Richard D. Enter CS + Kreme, a Melbourne duo who have released a few low-key but excellent singles of heavy-lidded pop for the likes of Total Stasis and The Trilogy Tapes. On their debut double-LP, Snoopy, Conrad Standish and Sam Karmel make good on the promise of those early records. SOLIS, MARTIN Introducing Martin Solis and Los Primos LP
"Born 1929 in San Antonio, TX, Martin Huron Solis, Jr. and his family came to Michigan in 1942 as migrant farmworkers and soon settled in the Detroit area. The Solis family was part of a wave of migration during the 1940s that brought thousands of Texas-born Mexican-Americans, along with their culture, north. Though he played guitar from an early age, Solis eventually fell in love with conjunto music, a South Texas style defined by the combination of accordion and bajo sexto, a Mexican twelve-string bass guitar. He taught himself to play the bajo sexto and joined up with accordionist Manuel Rivera, playing for tips in bars around Southwest Detroit, the heart of Detroit's Mexican-American community. In the late-1950s, he and his cousin Willy Huron, a saxophonist, formed Conjunto Los Primos ('The Cousins'), at the time one of only a handful of conjuntos in the Midwest. Solis became a favorite in Detroit based on a vast repertoire of songs he compiled by following the latest hits coming up from Texas. Their musical style was more complex than the conjunto label suggests. The inclusion of Solis's cousin Willy on saxophone blurs the line between working class conjunto music and the more middle class orquesta tejana, which includes more sophisticated string or horn sections. Likewise, they played a couple of polcas, the primary song form of the conjunto tradition, but also lean more toward styles like boleros and rancheras, song forms with roots in Cuba and Mexico. Solis's vocal performance, too, showcases a fuller sound more in line with ranchera singers like Vicente Fernandez and Jorge Negrete than the thinner vocal tradition of conjunto style. Fast forward to modern day -- Solis is now part of this seldom seen echelon of artists who released no records in their lifetime and still was inducted into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame. The power of his live performances and trailblazing creativity in blending styles with educated nuance gave him significant credit among peers and critics alike. This power, coupled with the intrigue of Tejano music thriving so far north of the Rio Grande, has made his 2018 induction into the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame. Mr. Solis sadly passed the year after he was inducted into the Hall of Fame, but it was during this time that Solis's son Frank discovered a grocery bag containing forgotten reel-to-reel tapes of his father's home-recorded music while helping declutter his attic. Frank took the tapes to his childhood friend (and production manager at Third Man Pressing) Eddie Gillis. Gillis, who was impressed with the recordings and quality of the preserved tapes, shared them with the team at Third Man."

SMITH, KAITLYN AURELIA Tides: Music For Meditation And Yoga LP
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith is an American composer, performer and producer, originally from Orcas Island and currently based in Los Angeles. After several self-released albums, Smith was signed to independent record label Western Vinyl in 2015, who released her first official album, Euclid, in January 2015. Tides: Music for the Meditation and Yoga, was released in January 2019. Smith grew up and was home-educated on Orcas Island, Northwestern Washington. She left the island to study composition and sound engineering at Berklee College of Music in Boston, before returning to the island after her graduation. It was after returning home that Smith discovered synthesizers, when a neighbor introduced her to the Buchla 100 Synthesizer. Having originally intended to use her voice as her primary instrument, and then moving to classical guitar and piano, Smith switched to the use of synthesizer after being leant and experimenting with the Buchla 100 for a year. Smith formed indie-folk band Ever Isles whilst still at Berklee but left the project after discovering the Buchla 100, explaining, "I got so distracted and enamored with the process of making sounds with [the Buchla's potential] that I abandoned the next Ever Isles album." When developing her composition skills, Smith used visual aid as inspiration for her music. She has said that she is always composing to a visual in her head, explaining, "Sometimes I let the sound create the image for me and then I build off that. Or vice versa: I come up with imagery that is inspiring to me, or I see something that is inspiring, and then create sounds that I feel match it." Recorded in 2013, Tides is a glimpse into the early phase of what has become Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's signature approach to electronic music. Composed and played on a Buchla Music Easel -- the modular synthesizer that gives Smith's music its organic feel -- this collection of instrumentals is at once uplifting, transportive, and meditational.

WILSON & COOL MARITIME, ROB MOSS Big Lunch Cassette + Book
A boxed set of cassette and companion book of poetry and drawings. Synthesist and filmmaker Sean Hellfritsch and author-illustrator Rob Moss Wilson met in 2008 while constructing a treefort together in Santa Cruz, California. Rob was invited to intern on a property where Sean was busying his hands with permaculture and animal husbandry, but after just a brief time working together the two realized each other's ability to cultivate forts of a more abstract nature. From that point forward, the structures they built would be made of sound, language, light, and spirit culminating in Big Lunch, a union of spoken-word poetry, ambient composition, and pen-and-ink drawings that weds Hellfritsch's bubbly, revitalizing synth work to Wilson's emotionally honest, casually profound poems and drawings. When taken as a purely auditory journey, Big Lunch is a succession of koan- like musings delivered in Wilson's unpretentious tone, which is both deepened and given levity by Hellfritsch's sonic water coloring. Wilson's words meet us right where we are: the dirt-spatter on our cars, the push-pull of grocery store impulses, standout joggers clad in blue jeans, and any number of modern niceties that become hilarious and humbling when simply noticed. In fact, noticing these details might be Wilson's superpower. Recognizing this knack throughout years of friendship, Hellfritsch and partner Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith put themselves up to the task of capturing the literary side of Big Lunch -- which was first printed as a standalone book of writings and drawings a few years back.

PARKER, EVAN Monoceros LP
"Originally recorded direct to disc and released by Incus in 1978, this new edition from Treader is pressed from the original stampers. Hand-finished sleeve. 'Parker uses rapid tonguing techniques and circular breathing to create a sound all his own, marked by the simultaneous intonation of multiple notes. One hears a note as well as all the residual tones around it; each breath ends up sounding like a battle between the different registers of the horn. At various times, Parker's saxophone sounds like dolphin speech, electronic tape squeals, or human murmurs; namely, anything but what it actually is. His language on the instrument is essential listening for anyone interested in acoustic experimental music' --AllMusic. 'Eight years after Topography Of The Lungs, and two years after his Saxophone Solos, Monoceros was the most muscular statement of Evan Parker's solo saxophone muse. Superbly recorded, it seemed to place the listener within the chaotic air flows of the saxophone's own tubing. Philip Clark said: 'Parker's dialogue with the saxophone throws up so much that is unexpected, and indeed unknowable, that the problem he faces is how to keep pace with his own invention' --The Wire, Best Albums Of The Year."

Like a hyperloop through this labyrinth, this high-velocity future is both beautiful and evil, glinting embers through low-bit fogged-out clusters. 100-meter high aluminum pylons vibrate, each captivated by their electrified foundations. There is no place for dust to settle on the floor. Where a loose TB-tribalism knocks switches and pounds upward synaptic shocks, life down there is too rapid. Not to be taken lying down, this is the viable path forward without the shackles of turgid passivity. The eect is no less thrilling than crucial, as it presents an essential DJ of our times. Settling into swift 150bpm groove, Hauff ploughs through shepherd-tone electro, ghetto bumps, and grizzled techno. A new collaborative track with Morah plays a rough game of meter, with Hauff's signature sound clear as ever ripping apart new dimensions with a brutal disorder over deceptive bass synths. The visceral crunch of the present is no more clear than at the halfway point, a threshold in which the breakneck electro falls apart, with the rabid foam of Nasenbluten's ballsy gabber anthem "Intellectual Killer". Slowly more room to breathe comes into view, the pace drawn down revealing a strange sense of resolution, with expansive synths hinting at a beckoning euphoria. At this moment, Helena Hauff is clearly in full stride, uniquely melding fragile machinations against anarchic human interventions. Helena Hauff and Morah, Umwelt, Machino, Galaxian, and L.F.T. all contribute with five previously unreleased tracks, exclusive to the compilation. Rare titles are also featured, such as the late Curley Schoop's "Mayhem" under the name Esoterik, "City Of Boom" by DJ Godfather & DJ Starski, Nasenbluten's "Intellectual Killer" and "After Dark" produced collaboratively by Andrea Parker and David Morley.2CD features: Esoterik, Mononom, Jaquarius, Slaves Of Sinus, Galaxian, Blackmass Plastics, Volruptus, Animistic Beliefs, Paul Blackford, DJ Godfather & DJ Starski, Dirty Hospital, SolarX, The Advent, O-Wells, Privacy, Morah & Hauff, Somatic Responses, Nasenbluten, Subtopia, Umwelt, L.F.T., Q.D.T., Machino, SC-164, Shedbug, Exzakt, Shinra, Maarten van der Vleuten, and Andrea Parker & David Morley.

SILVERY BOYS, THE The Silvery Boys LP
Vampisoul present the first vinyl reissue of The Silvery Boys's self-titled album, originally released in 1968. The Silvery Boys was created in 1965 in the district of Campo Grande, Rio de Janeiro, featuring a unique blend of organ, guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, and trombone. They became known as "The Famous Bandinha de Campo Grande" and released their debut album on RGE in 1967. At the end of the '60s, the sound of the garage beat and the bossa nova and samba coexisted smoothly in the repertoire of a good number of Brazilian bands. You could find playful Farfisa licks and guitar riffs combined with moving bossa rhythm drum patterns and powerful brass arrangements, groovy club tunes next to lounge mood sounds, across the track list of so many albums released at the time. That is exactly what the second album of The Silvery Boys comprises. Band members José Carlos (trombone) and Fernando Soares (guitarra) sign most of the songs on this self-titled record that also includes some versions of the Spanish famous Duo Dinámico, "Amor Amargo" and "A Recordar", as well as other international hits (Tommy James & The Shondells' "Gone, Gone, Goner"). However, "Você Balança Meu Coração" -- composed by José Messias -- is the stand-out cut here and became a much sought-after club tune after being included in the second volume of the cult compilation series High Jazz in the early '00s. A dance song so irresistible that makes the search for this elusive Brazilian album worthwhile. Original artwork and quality 180 gram pressing.

ASHTRAY NAVIGATIONS Greatest Imaginary Hits LP+4CD
"27th Anniversary set for the multi-dimensional midland screw, led by Phil Todd and Melanie O'Dubhslaine. Nearly six hours of cosmic, psychedelic, mind-boggling sounds, featuring a newly recorded LP plus four max-length CDs curated by AshNav connoisseurs Rob Hayler, Henry Rollins, Pete Coward, and Neil Campbell. The CDs are drawn from the band's massive back catalog of mostly small run / private releases, covering activity dating back to 1994. Mining a deep well of thousand-yard stare psychedelia, Ashtray Navigations possess of one of the most exciting outré music catalogs of the contemporary era, matching the classics from any era in originality and straight-up bonkers fun. This epic release includes a full range of hypnotic jams, including sequencer-led cosmic workouts, drifty ambience, and a heavy dose of Phil Todd's ripping, laser guitar leads. The gatefold LP also includes pithy liner notes from Matt Valentine, Henry Rollins, Jon Dale, and more." "Phil. Well I am glad you're finally back from your place in Monaco and getting to work. The pictures of you with the polo mallet and the horses you sent were impressive, sure but when you sell yourself as an artist type and then are seen cavorting with those over tanned Euro trustfunders, it is alienating to your audience. You are, however, the only person I have ever met who has actually cavorted and that's why you will always be a mid-level god to me." --Henry Rollins

YOUNGS, RICHARD Ein Klein Nein LP
"Mysterious and minimal instrumental album by Richard Youngs, dreamt at home and recorded quickly in Glasgow's Green Door Studio. Centered on a single piano chord and bare snare strikes, Youngs builds a haunting atmosphere in four episodes, featuring his guitar, organ, harmonica, and voice. The reductive and hypnotic approach here recalls his early classics like Advent and Festival. Another essential work from the prolific and truly unique musician. Creator of nearly one hundred albums, Richard Youngs somehow continues to find ways to surprise listeners. Even in these dark, dark ages where everyone knows everything, Youngs finds new creative ways -- recording albums of accessible 'rock' and folk music for the overground Glass and O Genesis labels, playing high-concept disco in the critically acclaimed AMOR; and releasing an extensive and bewildering series of albums where he plays all instruments with his feet!"

BOILLAT THERACE QUINTET Boillat Therace Quintet CD
We Release Jazz present its sixth release, a reissue of Boillat Thérace Quintet's self-titled album, available for the first time since its original limited private pressing in 1974. Full of prolific and inspired local clusters and boosted by the recently launched Montreux Jazz Festival, the Swiss jazz scene was vibrant and inventive in the 1970s, notably in the region surrounding Lake Geneva. This is precisely where jazz activist and brilliant pianist Jean-François Boillat and wind instrument master Raymond Thérace formed their quintet whose dazzling debut album was recorded in 1974. An absolute Lemanic gem of the soul-jazz/modal kind, the self-titled album includes superb covers of Freddie Hubbard's "Straight Life", Keith Jarrett's "In Your Quiet Place", and Rahsaan Roland Kirk's "Sweet Fire", plus groovy original compositions from the Boillat-Thérace crew. Helvetian fun facts: the velvety "1224" is dedicated to Geneva's public transport line Tram 12, and one exquisitely funky track on the album is named after the famed yet elusive (and locally legendary) Swiss Marmite: "Cenovis"! This is reissued in conjunction with Boillat Thérace Quintet's My Greatest Love featuring Benny Bailey from 1975 (WRJ 007CD/LTD-LP). Swiss jazz bliss! CD version includes three bonus tracks (Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Claude Engel covers), never released before.

BOILLAT THERACE QUINTET FEATURING BENNY BAILEY My Greatest Love CD
We Release Jazz present a reissue from Geneva's Boillat Thérace Quintet, the My Greatest Love album, featuring bebop and hard-bop legend Benny Bailey and available for the first time since 1975. Galvanized by the creation of the Montreux Jazz Festival in the late '60s and lively local scenes, jazz music was healthy and booming in Switzerland in the 1970s. One band that beautifully captured this energy was Jean-François Boillat and Raymond Thérace's Boillat Thérace Quintet whose self-titled debut (WRJ 006CD/LTD-LP) and impressive Montreux appearance set the tone for quality Helvetic jazz in 1974. Following this first excellent impression, the Boillat-Thérace ensemble connected with American trumpeter Benny Bailey and recorded the magnificent My Greatest Love in May and June of 1975. The modal, hard bop, and soul-jazz gem includes first-class takes on Freddie Hubbard's "Gibraltar", Kenny Dorham's "Blue Bossa", and Jimmy Heath's "Gemini", plus deliciously funky originals from the Geneva crew, including the upbeat "Le Colin" and the swaying fan-favorite "Prompt" and it's thrilling solos. Bailey is on trumpet and flugelhorn, Boillat on Fender Rhodes and piano, Thérace on saxophone and flute, Roger Vaucher on Fender bass, Eric Wespi on drums, and Rogelio Garcia on percussion and tenor saxophone -- heavy sessions and deep vibes. This is reissued in conjunction with Boillat Thérace Quintet's self-titled debut album from 1974 (WRJ 006CD/LTD-LP). Swiss jazz bliss!

PICCIONI, PIERO Il Boom LP
WHP preset a reissue of Piero Piccioni's original score for Il Boom, originally released on CAM in 1963. Written by Cesare Zavattini, directed by Vittorio De Sica, and interpreted by Alberto Sordi, Il Boom can be easily considered as one of the most peculiar film comedies in the Italian post-war era. Premiered in the USA in 2017, more than 50 years after its release in 1963, the film has been described as something between Buster Keaton, David Lynch, and Billy Wilder. Some sort of very current dark satire of the consumer society. Part of the film's surreal atmosphere is due to the original score composed and produced by the legendary Piero Piccioni. A weird and very dynamic mixture of different music styles including jazz and various popular dance grooves of the period such as samba, twist, calypso, and hully gully. A simple and yet very effective compositional technique based on both serious and funny elements at the same time. The soundtrack includes "Samba Della Ruota", Piccioni's first use of samba for Alberto Sordi's films. A choice that would soon become a real passion and trademark for the great Italian comic actor.

WOODS Strange To Explain CD
"Dreaming doesn't come easy these shadowed days, which is why Strange To Explain by Woods is such a welcome turning of new colors. It presents an extended moment of sweet reflection for the 15-year-old band, bouncing back to earth as something hopeful and weird and resolute. Like everything else they've recorded, it sounds exactly like themselves, but with subtly different shades and breaths and rhythmic feels and everything else that changes, the natural march of time and the intentional decisions of the musicians moving in what feels like an uncommonly organic alignment. Strange To Explain trades in a different kind of dependability, maintaining a steady connection to the voice on the other side of the record needle. After quickly recording and releasing 2017's Love Is Love in response to the tumultuous events of their (and our) 2016, Jeremy Earl and company took their time with what came next. Parenthood arrived, as did a short songwriting pause. The band went bicoastal when Jarvis Taveniere headed west. And when they returned to their posts, there on the other side of this particular mirror, they made this, an album that not only catches and holds and shares the light in yet another new way, but recognizes that there's still light to be caught, which is also no small thing. A bend beyond the last bend beyond, Woods keep on changing, thoughtfully and beautifully. The colors were always there, like trees blossoming just slightly differently each season, a synesthetic message coded in slow-motion. Recorded in Stinson Beach, the kind of place that seems like an AI simulation of an idyllic northern California coastal escape, the familiar jangling guitars recede to the background. John Andrews's warm keyboards and twining Mellotron rise around Earl's songs and dance across the chord changes like warm sunlight off the Pacific. The music feels a karmic landmass away from the creepiness of the uncanny valley." --Jesse Jarnow
