VACANT LOTS, THE Damage Control CD
Damage Control combines both EPs released by The Vacant Lots on Anton Newcombe's label A Recordings: Berlin EP (AUK 124EP, 2016) and Exit EP (AUK 131LP, 2019). All tracks were produced and recorded by Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre) at Anton's Cobra Studio in Berlin. Jared Artaud of The Vacant Lots says, "working with someone who made you want to make records is fucking inspiring. You not only learn a lot working with Anton in the studio -- you become a better artist in the process. Through this collaboration we were able to distill ideas on the spot and turn fragments into songs. Anton pushes you further to get the best results and that really drives the process of making records." The Vacant Lots have recently released their critically acclaimed third album Interzone (2020) on Fuzz Club and have previously released singles with Mexican Summer and Reverberation Appreciation Society. The duo has collaborated on their debut album Departure (SCR 080CD, 2014) with Spacemen 3's Sonic Boom, and their second album Endless Night (2017) with Alan Vega. The group has toured with Suicide, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Growlers, Dean Wareham, The Dandy Warhols, and Spectrum. CD version marks the first time all tracks will be made available on CD; includes liner notes from the band.

DAVIES, RHODRI Telyn Rawn CD
"All the music on this album is improvised. I designed and built a long-forgotten instrument, experimented with wound and pleated horse hair strings, I engaged with historical texts and poetry, learnt the techniques and music from the Robert ap Huw manuscript and researched the importance of the horse and horse cults in Welsh culture. All these interventions were a means to improvise historically informed music and re-evaluate the legacy of the harp in Wales but ultimately served as a jumping off point so as to create new possibilities." --Rhodri Davies

EULBERG, DOMINIK Bienenfresser & Blauracke 12"
2020 repress. Various creatures of the native flora and fauna are interpreted on Dominik Eulberg's label Apus Apus. The music pieces are thoughtfully presented with two tracks per EP. His first EP features the track "Bienenfresser" ("bee-eater") and "Blauracke" ("blue roller"). "Bienenfresser" oscillates from one color into another without losing its significant habitus. It is a musical journey through the color scheme of the bee-eater -- a collective, mobilizing anthem. The magnificent turquoise blue plumage of the blue roller are translated into worlds of sound on "Blauracke". Sparkling melodies intertwine gracefully along musical chains, and create a constant redefinition of the theme.

EULBERG, DOMINIK Roter Gitterling & Tintenfischpilz 12"
2020 repress. Dominik Eulberg's second EP on his label Apus Apus. Not allowing any objection, "Roter Gitterling" strides forward with determination towards a musical interpretation of the fleshy red cage of the mushroom it takes its name from. A fulminant kick drum counteracts in a very prosaic way the bitter-sweet pads. "Tintenfischpilz" is a bizarre looking extraterrestrial mushroom that evokes, at first glance, the image of a dead octopus or radioactive vegetable. All done with elegant blend of continuous progression and permanent change the track wreathes itself towards heaven, whereas fragmented melody artifacts pour into the shape of a miraculous emergence.

"Abendpfauenauge" brings together a romantic outlook as well as a rave quality through sequentially tight-knit melodies which enable a DJ to play the tune in the club. "Oleanderschwärmer", on the contrary is a dreamy and airy 15-minute epic that is a true fascinating listening experience.

DEAD C, THE Unknowns LP
LP version. "Some bands struggle to transcend their initial mythos, those stories that introduce them to the public eye. But The Dead C is a notable exception. They appeared in 1986 under a cloud of mystery, their unconventional location (South Island, New Zealand) helping to fuel their erratic sound. Name-dropped through the nineties by groups like Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo, they gained influence and acclaim but never strayed from their original mainlined performing technique, which can sound like chaos to the casual listener. What kind of a world greets them and their new album Unknowns in 2020? New Zealand culture is better known throughout the world, not to mention a low-virus paradise. Yes, isolated as in the past, but this time for being a nation of efficacy in tackling a public health crisis. But what about the rest of the world? The music of Mssrs. Robbie Yates, Bruce Russell and Michael Morley endures, partially because their errant sounds, once so alienating, now feel like they've been made flesh in a large part of the modern-day world. Continuing to delve inwards for inspiration with tin ears towards trends, styles and technique, The Dead C forge onward. Unpolished, dusty and gritty, these three have again taken two guitars and drums, a combo which has less to say than ever, and leave the listener stunned. Unknowns has Morley slurring over spiraling dissemblance, with tracks ricocheting from intense to assaultive to drained, yet consistently magnificent. As reliable as ever, The Dead C are firmly grounded as an unassailable Truth."

EISENBERG, WENDY Auto LP
LP version. "Drawing the connections between Wendy Eisenberg's releases feels like undertaking a wide-ranging investigation. Albums of wildly inventive guitar, tempo-shifting avant rock and curiously leftfield pop fit together as offerings of Eisenberg's curious mind. On Auto, their most innovative and inner-reaching album yet, Eisenberg explores emotional, subjective truth, and how it interacts with an objectivity no person alone can grasp. Inspired by the solo work of Mark Hollis (Talk Talk) and David Sylvian's Blemish, with playing skills that have already seen them climbing Best Guitarist lists and an unvarnished vocal immediacy, Wendy Eisenberg has created an album of subtle display that resonates with maximal impact. Auto has multiple meanings. First, automobile: 'A lot of these songs were written about and mentally take place when I'm in the car on my way to gigs,' says Eisenberg. Immediate melodies came to them on these trips, to which they'd later add complex guitar parts. And automata: 'I make myself into a machine, which is why everything that's played is precise.' Finally, they frame their work in the literary technique of auto-fiction, 'the semi-fictionalized presentation of the self in a narrative form of growth,' as Eisenberg sees it. The album served as a means toward working through emotional conflicts from adolescent trauma and PTSD, and dissects the dissolution and conflict that led towards the breakup of their former band. With much of it written while its events played out, Auto faces the grief of losing what one thinks is their future while experiencing a dramatic reshaping of their past; it delves openly into the limited nature of one person's narrative. After making a few efforts to record Auto, Eisenberg ultimately chose to collaborate with childhood friend Nick Zanca, who contributes electronic elements and production. Mirroring the personal and organic offered by Eisenberg, synthetic sounds form a kind of boundary or context for everything. They 'sound like commentary on songs that were written from an organic or subjective perspective,' says Eisenberg. Their place on the album is integral for Eisenberg's goal 'to outweigh the subjectivity of normal singer-songwriter guitar songs with the objectivity of electronic sound.'"

CURTIS & THE ALL-STARS, LEE Let's Stomp: The Brits Are Rocking, Vol. 5 CD
"The fifth volume in our documentary series on Rock 'n' Roll from Great Britain. CD album with Lee Curtis' best recordings for Decca and Star-Club. There are similarities to King Size Taylor, to whom we have already dedicated an album: both were able to establish themselves better in Germany than in their British homeland. Detailed liner notes by Ashley Wood in the extensive and illustrated booklet. When Lee Curtis and the All-Stars finished 1962 as runners-up in the Mersey Beat Poll and then shortly thereafter secured a Decca recording contract, they must have felt as though they could be on the verge of a national breakthrough. Concerts and contracts notwithstanding, Lee's film star good looks and the presence of former Beatle Pete Best on drums were potentially a record company publicist's dream but mismanagement by Decca and ill-timed Star-Club jaunts saw Lee's homeland profile diminish rather than increase. As with our earlier series subject King Size Taylor, Lee found his audience in Germany where he performed with great success until a car crash effectively halted his career in 1967. Selected from more than two albums worth of material including tracks cut for both Decca and Star-Club, The Brits Are Rocking Vol. 5 focuses on Lee Curtis. Let's stomp..."

This live album features 14 classics, including "After Midnight", "Cocaine", and "Old Man". All tracks were recorded across several different shows: Carnegie Hall (New York, 1996), The Philharmonic (Munich, 1994), Flynn Theater (Burlington, 1993), The Great American Music Hall (San Francisco, 1994), The Hammersmith Apollo (London, 1994), The Sommerville Theater (Sommerville, 1993), and Park West (Chicago, 1990)."Cale's live performance style does nothing to quell his reputation for laid-back but pristine guitar playing and reserved Mississippi John Hurt-style delivery. A man who truly appreciates the value of restraint, Cale leaves plenty of room for his immaculate guitar lines, even to the point of irony on an ambling version of the previously insistent 'Mama Don't.' This collection, which was gleaned from an assortment of live shows dating from 1990-1996, finds Cale allowing his songs to unfold organically." --All Music

WELLS, BILL The Viaduct Tuba Trio Plays The Music Of Bill Wells CD
The latest chapter in the unfolding musical story of Bill Wells finds the Scottish jazz outsider's compositions played by a trio of tuba players with energetic contributions from young brass players from his adopted hometown of Glasgow. The results, The Viaduct Tuba Trio Plays The Music Of Bill Wells, are alternately ruminative, playful, and profound, ranging from the cyclical opener "Fanfare For Three Tubas" to a mischievous interpretation of "The Midges", a comic tribute to the entomological scourge of the Highlands by Scottish singer Kenneth McKellar, and the doleful "Chorale 4K" before the arresting finale of "Stone Throw Dream Anthem". Throughout the variety of moods conjured by the musicians the listener is reminded of both the power and tenderness of brass instruments -- their capacity to astound and reassure, to soothe and tickle. The trio in the title -- Antony Hook, Danielle Price, and Mark Reynolds -- formed in 2018 to perform in the lee of the Glenfinnan Viaduct as part of the Loch Shiel Festival. Wells contributed three tunes for the performance, including "Fanfare For Three Tubas", and composed the remainder after being commissioned by Glasgow's underground/experimental festival Counterflows as a direct result of the Glenfinnan Viaduct performance. The trio subsequently performed Wells's tunes in Glasgow with the Gorbals Youth Brass Band, who play on three of the album's ten tracks, sharing a bill with a duo featuring Chicago composer, flautist and educator Nicole Mitchell and London-based percussionist Mark Sanders. The Viaduct Tuba Trio Plays The Music Of Bill Wells represents another creative achievement for the prolific composer and multi-instrumentalist. Recorded at Castle of Doom studios in Glasgow by Tony Doogan, mixed by Bill at Loathsome Reels and mastered by Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub. Cover art by longtime collaborator Annabel Wright.

DAL FORNO, CARLA You Know What It's Like LP
2020 restock; LP version. Carla dal Forno presents her debut solo album You Know What It's Like, following time in cult Melbourne group Mole House and an earlier association with Blackest Ever Black as a member of F ingers and Tarcar. Her voice is an extraordinary instrument: both disarmingly conversational and glacially detached. It has something of the bedsit urbanity of Anna Domino, Marine Girls, Antena, or Helen Johnstone - stoned and deadpan - but it can also summon a gothic intensity that Nico or Kendra Smith would approve of. This voice is the perfect embodiment of dal Forno's emotionally ambiguous songs: their lyrics rooted in the everyday, observing and exposing a series of uncomfortable truths. "Fast Moving Cars" and "What You Gonna Do Now?" weigh up claustrophobia against loneliness, inertia against acceleration, doubling-down versus taking-off; the title track acknowledges the provisional nature of love and "real" intimacy, then decides to brave it anyway. By the time the startlingly sparse "The Same Reply" arrives, the sense of dejection is absolute. The vocal-led pieces are interspersed with richly evocative instrumentals. Smothered in tape-hiss and reverb, the seasick synthesizer miniatures "Italian Cinema" and "Dragon Breath" channel the twilit DIY whimsy of Flaming Tunes and Call Back The Giants. The drum machine and bassline of "DB Rip" are pure Chicago house, but then its dark choral drones nod to Dalis Car's dreams of blood-spattered Cornwall stone. "Dry The Rain" drinks from a stream of moon-musick that runs through Coil, In Gowan Ring, Third Ear Band, even the Raincoats's Odyshape (1981).

ROEDELIUS, HANS-JOACHIM Durch Die Wüste LP
2020 restock; LP version. The Bureau B label reissues the first solo record by composer/poet Hans-Joachim Roedelius, one of the most prolific musicians of the German avant-garde and a key figure in the birth of Krautrock, synthesizer pop and ambient music. Durch Die Wüste was originally released in 1978 on Sky Records, and fans of German electronica awaited the LP with particular anticipation, as the founding member of Cluster/Kluster/Harmonia had played a major role in the development of synthesizer music. They were in for a shock, however, as Durch Die Wüste turned out to be anything but an electronic album; in the avant-garde landscape of popular music, the record was a beacon of innovation. Initial reaction was rather less auspicious, centering around the question: what did this music have to do with Harmonia and Cluster? Anyone who has listened carefully to Cluster's 1974 effort Zuckerzeit will have come to recognize Roedelius' stamp on this and all subsequent Cluster and Harmonia albums. Just how far Roedelius would develop his own compositional technique and mode of playing would only become obvious when he was set free from the ensemble environment. Listeners at the time were baffled by just how little electronically-generated sounds were a feature of the album. Synthesizers and electronic effects did play a part, but Roedelius integrated them so seamlessly into the arrangement, that one barely noticed them. The rhythm machine was relegated to the status of metronome. In fact, Roedelius' decision to distance himself from electronic music, rigid in structure as it had become, and turn to a new form of musical expression, is what really gave the album its experimental character. Recorded over a 2-year period assisted by engineer Dave Hutchins and Conny Plank, who also contributed his unmistakable guitar and percussion style, and Dieter Moebius, who, in spite of everything, set a few significant markers with the synthesizer. There is a space-y, organic, relatable warmth to this record that absolutely transcends time. This reissue is pressed on 180 gram vinyl and comes in a glossy inner sleeve with notes by Asmus Tietchens.

CLUSTER & ENO Cluster & Eno LP
2020 repress of Bureau B's 2009 reissue. LP version. Originally recorded and released in 1977 on Sky Records, the first collaborative album by Brian Eno and Cluster was the first ambient record produced in Germany, and is considered the seminal, defining work of the genre. Brian Eno was certainly instrumental in creating and popularizing the concept of "ambient music" -- but it was not his invention alone. The German musicians Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius (Cluster) were brothers in spirit. As so often in music, the idea of ambient was in the air -- both Eno and Cluster experimenting with the form in the 1970s, rendering any debate as to who influenced who redundant. What is certain, is that Brian Eno attended a Cluster concert in Hamburg in 1975, strategically positioning himself in the front row. Sure enough, he was invited on stage to jam with the band and, after the show, the participants arranged to meet up again. They did so two years later at the Old Weserhof in Forst, the domicile of the German duo. Eno and Cluster spent three weeks in Conny Plank's studio, resulting in two albums: Cluster & Eno and After The Heat (1978). In the liner notes, Asmus Tietchens (who also plays on the record along with Can's Holger Czukay) writes: "Clearly, all three musicians inspired each other during their three weeks together without any clash of personalities. Nevertheless, some tracks sound more like Cluster, some more like Eno. So it made perfect sense to collect the tracks with a Cluster flavor on Cluster & Eno." The importance of this record can never be overstated, nor can its elegance of diverse forms be matched. From Indian sitar and tamboura, to synth warbles and airy tributes to Western groove, it is a rare glimpse at what happens when masters meet.

ROEDELIUS Selbstportrait LP
2020 restock. LP version on 180 gram vinyl. This is the third solo album by German keyboardist Hans-Joachim Roedelius, originally released in 1979 on Sky Records. Alongside his ongoing work with Cluster and Harmonia, Roedelius amassed an almost incalculable number of musical notations during his time in the idyllic Weser Uplands. Fleeting sketches, spontaneous improvisations, implied miniatures, rough compositions -- Roedelius recorded virtually every idea he came up with outside the studio sessions on his Revox A77 reel to reel; with the basic intention of capturing his moments of inspiration, he simply let the tape run as he played around on the Farfisa organ. Sound quality was not his prime concern, as he was not as yet entertaining any notion of releasing the results. As Roedelius recalls, costly tape spools were at a premium, so he recorded over older tapes in mono, at a less than ideal speed. Substandard, technically speaking (or listening), but as a self portrait, nothing short of a masterpiece. It would be inappropriate to measure this album by the hi-fidelity yardstick; see it as something closer to an intimate confession, an unguarded communiqué from one person to another. Bordering on naivety and free of conceit, Roedelius introduces us to his world through these chiffonesque études. There may be little variation in the Farfisa sound, but this is soon forgotten when Roedelius invites us to listen, to enter the experience. No expensive technology, no producer, no collaborators. This is unfiltered personality, the real Roedelius. Musically, Selbstportrait is characterized by a combination of ländler, minimalism and harmonic simplicity. The Weser Uplands, where Roedelius recorded his music, are certainly no Arcadia and the village of Forst is anything but Atlantis, but perhaps it could become the Graceland of German electronic music. Printed innersleeve with original liner notes and new notes by Asmus Tietchens.

GLOK Dissident Remixed 2LP
Dissident (BYTES 002LP, 2020), the debut album from Ride's Andy Bell, recording as his electronic alter ego GLOK, was released to widespread acclaim. On Dissident Remixed, album number seven on the label Bytes, lil' sister of Ransom Note Records, members of the extended Ransom Note family and fans of GLOK and Ride have come together to reimagine the source material in a rich smorgasbord of styles. Andrew Weatherall (RIP), Richard Sen, Maps, Jay Glass Dubs, C.A.R., Leaf, Timothy Clerkin, Franz Kirmann, Minotaur Shock, and the man himself all step up to lend their talents to the project and the results are stunning. Richard Sen kicks things off with his swaggering remix of the album's title track, distilling the 20-minute John Carpenter-meets-krautrock original into seven-minutes of psychedelic disco-dub, with Andy's John Squire-esque guitar licks to the fore. Add an Ian Brown vocal and this is what the Third Coming of the Stone Roses should have sounded like. Andy's contribution is a game changer, as the widescreen ambient techno throb of "Pulsing" is revamped over 15 hypnotic and glorious minutes. Imagine Mr Fingers at 33rpm, augmented by plaintive piano lines and dissonant atmospherics. This is the slo-mo acid-house/shoegaze hybrid you didn't know you needed. Timothy Clerkin's remix of "Projected Sounds" is the perfect foil for Andy's epic excursion. The Insult to Injury head honcho takes the propulsive Neu! meets Steve Reich original and slows it right down, with squelchy acid lines, chanted vocals and trippy effects. It's "Voodoo Ray" for the shoegaze generation. Splatter vinyl; gatefold sleeve; edition of 500.

MOORE, THURSTON By The Fire (Transparent Orange Vinyl) 2LP
Double LP version. Transparent orange vinyl. This is Thurston Moore's seventh solo album, and features musicians Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine) on bass and backing vocals, Jon Leidecker aka "Wobbly" (of Negativland) on electronics, James Sedwards on guitar, and Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley, as well as Jem Doulton, alternating on drums. "Hashish", the ?rst single from the album, is described by Moore as "an ode to the narcotic of love in our shared responsibility to each other during isolation." The song includes a video with footage from The Thurston Moore Group's tour in early 2020 in Europe, as well as footage of Thurston quarantined in his home during the past few months "with respect to the sacred healing truth of nature." Prior to isolation during the COVID pandemic, Thurston worked in recording studios in North London until the third week of March 2020 to complete this album for release on September 5, 2020. While the musicians may not immediately tour, Thurston was adamant to release By The Fire in 2020, and with Daydream Library, has released this quote: By The Fire is music in ?ames. 2020 is our time for radical change and collective awareness and Thurston Moore has written nine songs of enlightenment, released to a world on ?re. Taking a cue from Albert Ayler's "music is the healing force of the universe," this recording offers songs as ?ames of rainbow energy, where the power of love becomes our call. These are love songs in a time where creativity is our dignity, our demonstration against the forces of oppression. By The Fire is a gathering, a party of peace -- songs in the heat of the moment.

"Ectroscop" comes complete with some fuzzy bass frequencies and twisted vocal samples which rest under the surface. The loose rhythm structure and general freedom of the track confirms a true dance cut destined to be a favorite for the crowds listening closely. "Beetglass" is centered around a shuffling house foundation with huge synth swirls which come seemingly out of nowhere. Truly a primetime Villalobos banger if there's ever been one. Destined to lift the heads off the lucky folks on the floor when it's played.

MACIUNAS ENSEMBLE Maciunas Ensemble LP
Restocked, last copies. The Maciunas Ensemble was founded in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in 1968 as a free improvisational music group that set out to realize the score "Music for Everyman" by Fluxus initiator George Maciunas, which they interpreted as allowing total freedom in the sounds being produced. In the mid-1980s, after a number of personnel changes, the group settled on the line-up of artists Paul Panhuysen and Mario van Horrik, musician Jan van Riet, and scientist Leon van Noorden, which remained stable until Panhuysen's death in 2015. The group met and played on a regular basis, usually improvising on instruments that were at hand and recording every session. Before playing the next session, the previous recording was listened to and discussed. In 1980, the Eindhoven art initiative Het Apollohuis, also the home of Panhuysen and his family, became their home base, a place that subsequently gained fame for being one of the first and longest-running venues for sound art and experimental music in Europe. In the recent years, the Maciunas Ensemble has begun to go through its vast archive of recordings and to select material for publication that remained unreleased so far. The first bundle of archival recordings, dating from 1968 to 1980, was released on an 11-CD set on Apollo Records in 2012. For their 50th anniversary in 2018, the second part of archival recordings is to be published, its first instalment being this LP on Edition Telemark comprising unreleased tracks recorded between 1982 and 2012. More archival material will be released in digital format by the ensemble. This LP allows a glimpse into the musical directions the Maciunas Ensemble has been undergoing during those 30 years. Side A features "Ice Cream Man" and "Toxic Metals", two repetitive, thundering tracks from the early 1980s played on guitar, piano, and cello, and heavily inspired by minimalist rock and post-punk music. Side B contains four shorter tracks: "Russolution" (1985), played on self-built aluminum monochords, "Stamples" (2002), employing sampled voices, and "ZENder" (2009) and "Dèdeboum" (2012), both improvised tracks on vocals and a number of instruments. Standard edition of 250; brown Kraftpak sleeve with printed inner sleeve and liner notes by Mark van de Voort and Werner Durand.

REIDY, JULIA Vanish LP
Vanish is Julia Reidy's yearning, fat debut for Editions Mego. Since 2019, Julia's bubbling 12-string guitar work -- sighing streams of crystal plucks drawn closer or echoing on -- has moored a tactile, ever-lusher sound. On "Guitar", the Australian, Berlin-based musician melts down sharp synths; electric fuzz and flex; uncanny found sounds; and autotuned voice and harmonica in a heady, overpowering potion. Reidy's music sweeps you up. It's restless, always traveling on. Lonesome tones into machine chorales into hesitant hum. The LP's side-long cuts sway between scenes but are always rooted: Julia's guitar and vocal lines seem mapped to the natural ebb-and-flow of breath and thought, they lull you as they push through vast and secret spaces. Vanish completes a trio of releases begun with last year's brace, brace (Slip, 2019) and In Real Life (BT 051LP). The delicious unease, the anxious burning of the preceding volumes has settled, becoming more wide-eyed and resolute. For all its poise, the album's sense of build -- electric licks rasping into glistening synths, punctured by distant kicks -- feels freshest. When "Oh Boy"'s smudged whistle comes, it has fought its way out of the thickets, and hits like heartbreak. Music by Julia Reidy. Mixed and mastered by Joe Talia at Holding Pattern Berlin, June 2020. Artwork by Suze Whaites. Layout by Nik Void. Impossible without: Suze Whaites, Adam Pultz Melbye, Manuel Pessoa de Lima, David Walker.

BRANKO Branko Presents: Enchufada Na Zona Vol. 2 LP
Roughly translated from Portuguese, Na Zona means something like being in a specific place, occupying a zone and owning it -- a fitting metaphor for Branko's career as a DJ and producer exploring the global side of club music. But what happens when you can no longer occupy physical spaces to create a shared experience around club music... Enter Volume 2 of our Branko Presents: Enchufada Na Zona compilation series, where following the release of his sophomore album Nosso (ENLP 102LP), the Enchufada founder curates a selection of original music from himself and some of his favourite artists, as well as a series of his own edits and remixes, all created during quarantine from home studios in Lisbon, Accra, São Paulo, London, or Paris. With the club seeming like a distant memory, Branko puts forward a collection of songs more fitting to the times we live in and the physical space we get to enjoy them at: home. Alongside new music from the likes of Dengue Dengue Dengue, Studio Bros, or Vanyfox, as well as his edits and remixes for artists such as Dino D'Santiago, DKVPZ, or Gafacci, Branko presents a more melodic and introspective take on the always-evolving and warm-blooded rhythms of global club music, a product of every artist's shared experience of creating and enjoying music in isolation. Also features Ellah, Rose Juam, Hagan, and Lua Preta. Edition of 300.

CURRAN, BUCK No Love Is Sorrow LP
LP version. No Love Is Sorrow is the third solo album by American singer-songwriter-guitarist Buck Curran. The album's primary influence draws upon personal experience, along with an idiosyncratic musical style developed over many years as a solo artist and member of the psych-folk duo Arborea. The album presents a body of soundscapes... acoustic and electric instrumentals, psychedelic poetic folk songs... compositions inspired by visions of the surreal landscapes of life: love, hope, loss, fear, transformation, the light of expecting a newborn child, dreams, the realization of impermanence with the recent losses of family members and friends. Further inspiration was drawn from music as wide-ranging as experimental music, '60s, and '70s folk and psychedelic blues-rock, jazz, Western classical music, and Indian classical music. "Ghost on the Hill", "Deep in the Lovin' Arms of My Babe", "Odissea", and "One Evening" are very personal songs that include lyrical themes of love, memories, and fear: "Ghost on the Hill" is a haunting and poetic memoir of life past, "One Evening" (in the poetic style of Bob Dylan's "It's Alright, Ma, I'm Only Bleeding") is a harrowing statement charged with scenes of contemporary life: love and hope, uncertainty and fear created by society, technology, and politics. "Blue Raga", "No Love Is Sorrow", "Marie", "For Adele", and "Chromaticle", and "Lucia" are experimental tone poems created through improvisation on acoustic guitar. "Django (New Years Day)" is Curran's debut on piano inspired by the music of Claude Debussy and Erik Satie.

CONTI, IVAN MAMAO Poison Fruit (Color Vinyl + Bonus 7") LP/7"
Last copies, RSD 2020 release. Far Out Recordings present a special "poisoned vinyl" edition of Ivan "Mamão" Conti's critically acclaimed Poison Fruit album. The 180 gram, splattered color LP is accompanied by an exclusive bonus 7" with a previously unreleased track from the original Poison Fruit sessions "Katmandu", and "Ninho", a track never before released on vinyl. From an artist in their seventies, you probably wouldn't expect to hear an album like this. But Brazilian drumming legend Ivan "Mamão" Conti has been experimenting and innovating for the last half a century. As one third of cult Rio jazz-funk trio Azymuth, Mamão was at the root of the group's "samba doido" (crazy samba) philosophy, which warped the traditional samba compass with jazz influences and space age electronics. Even with his lesser-known jovem guarda group The Youngsters, Mamão was experimenting with tapes and delays to create unique, ahead-of-its-time sounds, way back in the sixties. More recently Mamão recorded an album with hip-hop royalty Madlib under the shared moniker Jackson Conti. With his first album in over twenty years, and the first to be released on vinyl since his 1984 classic The Human Factor, Mamão shares his zany carioca character across eleven tracks of roots-y electronic samba and tripped-out jazz, beats, and dance music. Featuring Alex Malheiros and Kiko Continentino on a number of tracks, the Azymuth lifeblood runs deep, but venturing into the modern discotheque (as Mamão would call it), Poison Fruit also experiments with sounds more commonly associated with house and techno, with the help of London-based producer Daniel Maunick (aka Dokta Venom) and Mamão's son Thiago Maranhão. Take a bite of Mamão's psychoactive papaya and join the maestro on a weird and wonderful stroll through the Brazilian jungle.

NASCIMENTO, MILTON Ultimo Trem 2LP
Last available copies, RSD 2020 release. Following the release of Milton Nascimento's Maria Maria (FARO 215LP), Far Out Recordings present Nascimento's 1980 follow-up. With the success of Maria Maria in 1976 behind them, Nascimento reunited with his writing partner Fernando Brant in 1980 to produce another ballet, Ultimo Trem (Last Train). This time, they chose to tackle a more contemporarily relevant subject, the impact of the closure of a train line that connected certain towns and cities in the North East of Minas Gerais to the coast. "The military government shut down the route and the whole region began to fade away," explains Milton. "I love train rides" adds the composer, "But today there are almost no trains to Brazil..." Featuring much of the same all-star line-up as Maria Maria -- including legendary Brazilian musicians Naná Vasconcelos, João Donato, Paulinho Jobim, and members of Som Imaginário, amongst many others, like Maria Maria, the album holds what Milton himself considers to be the definitive versions of some of his most beloved tracks, including "Saídas E Bandeiras" and "Ponte de Areia". The title track, "Ultimo Trem" -- performed exquisitely by Zezé Mota with a choir and piano -- is a mournful lament about the human consequences of the axed line. "A Viagem (The Trip)", launched with a train's steam whistle, sees Milton's guitar moving to a train's rhythm. "Bicho Homen (Beastly Man)" and "Decreto (Degree)" are atypically upbeat and funky, their vocals a mesh of wordless male voices resembling the then fashionable Swingles Singers' renderings of Bach. "E Daí? (And So What?)", and "Olho d'Agua (Water's Eye)" were both drawn from Clube Da Esquina (1972). The unusual "O Velho (The Old Man)" conjures up an image of an old shaman singing alone into the wind against the cries of nature. Perhaps the most affecting songs are Nascimento's "Itamarandiba" and "Oração (Prayer)". The latter is a cry for a change in the situation whilst "Itamarandiba" ends with an upbeat, whirling Hammond organ and guitar timepiece. The closing track "Ponta de Areia (Sand Edge)", was based on one of Fernando's newspaper stories and became one of Milton's most famous pieces, covered by musicians such as Wayne Shorter and Earth, Wind and Fire. After 27 years of being locked inside contracts and record company legalities, these sublime songs were finally released in 2003 as a double-CD package, along with Maria Maria. This is the first ever vinyl release, on limited edition red vinyl, for Ultimo Trem.

AZYMUTH As Curvas Da Estrada De Santos/Ze E Parana (Demos 1973-75) 7"
Following 2019's release of Azymuth's Demos (1973-75) (FARO 210CD, FARO 210-1LP, FARO 210-2LP), two more home-recorded demo tracks by the Brazilian psychedelic jazz-funk masters have surfaced from a tape in drummer Ivan Conti's private archive. Featuring an instrumental take on Roberto and Erasmo Carlos' 1969 Jovem Guarda hit "As Curvas da Estrada de Santos", and spacey psych-folk oddity "Zé e Paraná", the new 7" release via Far Out Recordings shines yet more light on this critical period for Azymuth.

CONNORS, LOREN Unaccompanied Acoustic Guitar Vol. 1 LP
"Here is the first volume of protean solo improvisations recorded by Loren Connors in his artist's garret in New Haven, Connecticut. It was committed to tape on February 20, 1979 and pressed to vinyl soon after. As with the two earlier LPs on Loren's Daggett label, singer/recorder-player Kath Bloom also appears on this record, although only on the second side. Those prior LPs were both issued in 1978, The first was Acoustic Guitar/Gifts a split LP with Loren solo on one side and with Kath joining him on the flip. The second was Fields, which I have been assured uses the same split format. Although most people cannot help themselves from believing all nine volumes of this series (all of which we will be reissuing) are of a piece, the first volume represents a real declaration of identity for Loren. He was introducing himself publicly as a guitar player, although his approach was still very much dictated by the influence of the painter, Mark Rothko, who Loren once described as using a minimal palette to create vital art. The music on Unaccompanied Acoustic Guitar Vol. 1 is less violent than the solo side of the Acoustic Guitar/Gifts split. I've never been able to hear a copy of Fields, so I can't compare that one. But the feel to this session is bluesy, in as much as Loren's wordless vocals have a surface similarity to a hellhound's, and while he was not using a slide, most of the notes he plays are bent to the edges of their known range. Fahey always said blues was 'about' anger, however and there's not really any of that here. I am more reminded of this Rothko quote. 'You've got sadness in you, I've got sadness in me ... and my works of art are places where the two sadnesses can meet, and therefore both of us need to feel less sad.' The first side is solo. On the second Loren is joined for a bit by Kath on hums and recorder. The music brims with sorrow more than anything else. And while it's clear Loren was embracing an abstract avant garde aesthetic vis-a-vis his playing, the urge to communicate seems to lie at its roots. Whatever you choose to call it, this is the beginning of something quite beautiful." --Byron Coley, 2020

MONOSHOCK Runnin' Ape-Like From The Backwards Superman: 1989-1995 2LP
Just what you need in these end times -- Cardinal Fuzz (Europe) and Feeding Tube Records (N. America) -- a vinyl issue of the killer CD comp that SS Records released way back in 2004 with a couple of added treats. Brace yourself for some stellar hair-singeing, full-throttle wipe outs across four slabs of heavy black vinyl. Monoshock was one of the best bands of the '90s and if they were from Seattle and not Illa Vista and Oakland, California you would already know that. During their six years they released a handful of 7"s, served as a backing band for Von Lmo, and created one of the classic psych albums of all time, Walk to the Fire (1996). In the last few years, they received praise from around the globe, raved up by Julian Cope as one of the great unknown bands of the '90s and cited as an influence by current heavy favs, Comets on Fire, as well as a whole slew of Japanese psych bands. Monoshock is fuzz-fuel, wah-wah damaged, riff-crazed punk rock which draws in Hawkwind, the Stooges, Simply Saucer, and other psych-punk gods. This double-LP collects all their 7"s and comp tracks together with seven previously unreleased tunes and two songs from their ultra-rare 1989 demo tape and two added digi bonus live tracks from their reunion shows. Fans will be overjoyed. Virgins will become fans. The band's stellar Walk to the Fire has been acknowledged as one of the classic psych albums of all time. Comes with a folded A3 double sided insert.

COTTON, ALISON Only Darkness Now LP
"Here is the second solo LP by the wonderful London-based singer/multi-instrumentalist Alison Cotton. Originally issued on cassette by the mighty Bloxham Tapes, just about everyone who heard Only Darkness Now suggested it might make for an excellent LP. And hey -- they were right. Alison's debut LP All Is Quiet at the Ancient Theatre (FTR 424LP) received wide ranging critical acclaim from placing in the Guardians Writers 'Album Of The Year' to placing in the Quietus 'Albums of the Year'. Ms. Cotton has a storied past performing with Saloon and The Eighteenth Day of May, and she still may be found doing likewise with The Left Outsides . . . Only Darkness Now begins with a sidelong instrumental track, 'Behind the Spiderweb Gate,' during which Cotton displays her immense drone chops, organizing rich, thick layers of viola, Omnichord, and voice into the soundtrack for a totally immersive trip. The effect is such that seconds become minutes and as time stretches till eventually, in the peak, time ceases to have any meaning whatsoever -- a beautiful state to be transported too as everything slows down. You could spend a whole year listening to this one. The second side starts with 'In Solitude I Will Fade Away,' a collage of Alison's voice, twinned and then some. It's short and sweet with just a little drumming to move things along. 'How My Heart Bled in Bleeding Heart Yard' brims with as much longing as it title suggests. It opens with a long instrumental passage, emphasizing the human pace of a harmonium's breath patterns, soon joined by a viola, also offering tones of a very human quality. All of this swells into a chorale of immense and mournful depth before being joined by Nico-like vocals that raise a wordless alarm. 'The Hill Was Hollow' is a short mystery for percussion and violin. Unravel at your own peril. Finally there is 'Shirt of Lace.' This is a studio recording of one of Alison's regular live covers. The song is by the late Dorothy Carter (a visionary American musician whose work bridged experimental and medieval musics) and Cotton's version is a sheer blast -- her vocals curling and twisting high above a supple bed of key drones, string plucks and sliding arco passageways . . . one of the very few albums I can name that matches the cold fire of Nico's Marble Index and it does so without taking a single step that isn't purely Alison's own..." --Byron Coley, 2020 Edition of 300.

BAND WHOSE NAME IS A SYMBOL, THE Berserkir Volume II LP
Dateline unknown -- emanations from a planet in meltdown. The universal cosmic event tracker estimates between 22 to 52 points of possible physical contact with The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol but it has lost count. This Canadian improv unit have over the last few years started to get the gushing love and attention they have always deserved. Like all the best artists, they do not fit snugly into any genre -- as from one moment to the next their ability to create cosmically juiced up and fucked up music which in many cases when played and recorded was the first time and last time said tracks will ever be played. This has proven to be the case time after time across too many releases to mention (no wonder Damo Suzuki always calls on TBWNIS to back him up). If you said Berserkir Volume II could be the pinnacle, you would yet again be getting caught up in the moment of magic they spin on you. Berserkir II contains four long tracks of hypnotic and freaked out cosmic haze (all recorded in the same four-hour session that yielded Berserkir Volume I). There are zero overdubs whatsoever and no studio gimmickry. The pieces are framed by supercharged, blistering, psychedelic dual guitars, pummeling rhythm, mutated; Miles-inspired flights of free form trumpet and flowing synth drones touching side excursions into the depths of alien prog. One may well be compelled to crank this up loud and leave speakers and mind, shattered and melded together in a smoldering heap on the floor! End of transmission...

MILLER & STEVE SHILL, GRAEME The Carrier Frequency LP
Frozen in time over four decades this 1984 "cyclic incantation" combines electroacoustics, grazed euphoria, industrial aesthetics, sampled salvage, and recycled mechanic folk to score a widely revered dystopian physical theatre performance from the UK's hugely influential Impact Theatre Co-Operative. From a seminal post-punk art-action faction (formed in a Leeds warehouse space alongside Gang Of Four and The Mekons), this apocalyptic prophecy not only cracked avant-garde stage boundaries but provided a captive audience with stunning set design and an incredible broken-music soundtrack before its swan song amidst Poland's 1986 power plant panic. From the sonic workbench of the very same bedsit-situationists that created the haunting 1983 music to The Moomins TV animation comes the eventual isolated music release to this pioneering theatrical spectacle of truly mythical status. The Carrier Frequency (1984) was a legendary stage work that emerged from the collaboration between the influential performance company Impact Theatre Co-operative and cult novelist Russel Hoban. The incantation of Hoban's text voiced in the broken verbiage of a post-apocalyptic broken language and the entranced physicality of Impact's ritualistic performance in a pool of cold dark water printed deeply on those who witnessed it. It reached an impassioned crescendo on the rising score by Graeme Miller and Steve Shill who also performed in the work. The music exploited samples from Hoban's own recordings of the shortwave radio broadcasts which he tuned in as he wrote, helping him order the green phosphorescent letters on the screen of his Apple computer. Shill and Miller mirrored Hoban's channeling in their approach to making the score, following the notion that this was the broadcast of some Central Eurasian radio station doomed forever to circulate fragments of static interlaced with desultory public information broadcasts and "The Record", its only surviving fragment of a lost culture. The score was forged on an 8-track tape recorder sandwiching harmonium and accordion with the output of a digital delay machine that could trap and fragments of audio to be triggered and manually pitched. It is a knowingly crude montage where samples denote fragmentation itself and their reassembly, like Frankenstein's monster, shows the stitches that join the stolen body parts.

TILLMANS, WOLFGANG Life Guarding/Growing 12"
"Life Guarding" offers a first glance into an upcoming album by Wolfgang Tillmans. The song finds Tillmans in open waters, lyrically exploring wor(l)ds as they appear like undertows and tie in the listeners by his candid approach to accept whatever the drift throws at him and leaving him exposed at his most vulnerable. It seems no coincidence that the video Tillmans' shot and directed for the song finds a similar approach to "liquidity" in visual language. Shifting the lens between micro and macrocosms, collages of body parts, fruit and insects, we find him equally paying attention to the waves of the Atlantic Ocean as well as to the "same" water in the form of drops, evaporating on a hot kitchen plate. This current shape of "Life Guarding", in equal measures upbeat and melancholic, emerged in sessions with Tillmans' long term musical collaborators Tim Knapp and Jay Pluck in early 2019 at Trixx Studios in Berlin, that were further developed and produced by Tim Knapp and Bruno Breitzke. "Growing" was originally part of Wolfgang Tillmans' sound, light and video installation "South Tank" at Tate Modern in 2017. This summer finally sees the independent release of this collaboration with the L.A.-based duo Wreck and Reference. The song also features excerpts of Fred Weyrich's lyrics for German singer Alexandra's 1968 hit "Sehnsucht" (Longing). "Growing" involved the band placing samples of Tillmans' singing and spoken word over a kick drum-driven techno track made with synthesizers, acoustic drum recordings converted to digital drums, and noisy samples of jangling keys. Wreck and Reference are an experimental music project from California by Felix Skinner and Ignat Frege. Drawing upon the blown-out intensity of black metal and noise rock, they eschew traditional guitar-centric instrumentation to construct songs with digital samples, drums, and voice. To date, the band has released four EPs and four full-length albums, and has contributed to the production of the title track to Tillmans' 2018 EP Heute Will Ich Frei Sein.

OPTIC SINK Optic Sink LP
LP version. "With Optic Sink, Natalie Hoffmann (NOTS) creates a musical paradox: an endeavor that doesn't really seem to belong to any particular time or place, constructed with sounds that are synthesized and stripped down, yet bristling with urgency and brutalist emotion. The project took shape in 2018, when NOTS were on a break to write and woodshed music for 3, and Hoffmann began experimenting on her four-track recorder. Optic Sink surfaced as a performance soon after, appearing at bars, venues and festivals, including Memphis Concrète and SXSW. Hoffmann drives Optic Sink in live performances and on the selftitled debut album, with percussionist Ben Bauermeister (Magic Kids, Toxie, A55 Conducta) collaborating from the co-pilot's seat. Setting up camp on the post-punk side of the minimal electronic scene, Optic Sink eschew computers for a warmer, decidedly human soundscape. Hoffmann's power, and the tension she generates between human and machine, evokes Maria, the rebellious teacherturned- Maschinenmensch in Fritz Lang's Metropolis, and Ripley, the swaggering, sacrificing heroine of Ridley Scott's Alien franchise. Dadaism and the Bauhaus movement could both be cited as influences; so might the existentialist philosophy of Simone de Beauvoir and the jump-cuts of Maya Deren. Written over a two-year period, the eight songs that comprise Optic Sink sound like they should've been recorded in a bathysphere or on a space station -- instead, they were captured via analog tape at Andrew McCalla's Bunker Audio studio in summer 2019. Bauermeister's inventive aux percussion and drum machine work provides the backdrop, while Hoffmann stokes a proverbial furnace in the foreground, dryly revisiting and repeating words and phrases until they're imbued with portent. Hoffmann's synthesizers add texture with growls and shrieks, often mutating danceable rhythms into shimmering walls of sound. Optic Sink defy categories, shape-shifting from cold wave to psychedelia to distorted noise rock. In the process -- which frequently occurs in a single song -- Optic Sink claim unchartered territory as they cathartically fragment and reassemble sounds, concepts, and verbal constructs. The conflict they define is life in America in 2020, finding beauty in the journey despite what the final resolution might be."

LP version. "This would be the first proper Quintron & Miss Pussycat full-length since 2011's Sucre Du Sauvage, and the duo's third for Memphis Tennessee's weirdo-rock label Goner Records. Produced by Greg Cartwright (The Oblivians/Reigning Sound) and recorded on 2-inch tape at Gainesville Florida's PULP ARTS studio, Goblin Alert picks up where Sucre Du Sauvage left off: snotty, semi-political, trash anthems like, 'Teenagers Don't Know Shit', 'Stroller Pollution', and 'Buc-ee's Got A Problem'. Also, for the first time ever, Quintron and Pussycat have ditched the drum machine in favor of New Orleans jazz-basher, Sam Yoger (Babes, AJ Davilla) on drum kit, and slinky Florida man, Danny Clifton (Room 13, Jane Jane Pollock) on hollow-body guitar. The resulting vibe is some kinda tweaked-out Miami disco dipped into a Mississippi mudslide, especially the tracks featuring Biloxi talk-box master, Benny Divine (aka Benni). And for the mystery lovers, there is 3/4 power-ballad entitled, 'Where's Karen', featuring backing vocals by Heather Lee (Room 13, Jane Jane Pollock), about a troubled girl who vanished on Mardi Gras day."

HIGH SPEED & THE AFFLICTED MAN Get Stoned Ezy LP
2020 restock; LP version. In 1982, the mysterious Steve Hall, a self-proclaimed "hippie-punk" who had previously released a couple of D.I.Y. basement-punk albums with his band Afflicted Man, recorded one of the most obscure, underrated and killer heavy-psych albums of all time. Credited to High Speed & The Afflicted Man, Get Stoned Ezy consists of three long tracks of late '60s/early '70s-influenced psychedelic hard-rock. A fuzz-wah assault of epic proportions in the style of other guitar-damage gods like Human Instinct, Wicked Lady, Hendrix, High Rise, Sabbath, Stooges, etc., all played with a real acid-punk attitude. Guerssen Records present the first-ever legit reissue of this lost masterpiece, licensed by Steve Hall. Remastered sound, insert with detailed liner notes by Chris Stigliano (Black To Comm), and rare pictures.

ACTION, THE Rolled Gold LP
2020 restock; the legendary 1967-68 recordings by UK mod band The Action, registered when they were in transition from mod-beat to full-blown psychedelia, just prior to becoming Mighty Baby. Originally recorded as a set of demos with the intention of obtaining an album deal which inexplicably never materialized, Rolled Gold is a collection of brilliant songs, melancholic yet powerful. The Action's classic line-up of Reg King, Alan "Bam" King, Michael Evans, and Roger Powell is augmented with the inclusion of new members Martin Stone on guitar and Ian Whiteman on flute/organ. All of them are playing their hearts out: superb harmonies, great guitar work, and clever arrangements which show the influence of bands like The Byrds and the psychedelic sounds that were coming from the west coast and UK as well as jazz giants like Coltrane. Always the stuff of legend, the Rolled Gold tapes were shelved at the time, not released until 1997 when the Dig The Fuzz label discovered them and did a limited LP/CD run. Out of print on vinyl for many years, Guerssen Records present a new vinyl edition. If you dig the psychedelic era of Small Faces, Pretty Things, The Who, Plus The Creation, Nazz, Tomorrow, Blossom Toes, The End, or Traffic -- look no further. Digitally remastered from the master tapes. Includes insert with photos and detailed liner notes by Jason Barnard (Shindig!)."It's as if Paul Weller time-travelled back to 1967 and wrote the best songs of his career. Every track is a fully realized melodic and lyrical statement." --Matt Collar, All Music"I could imagine, if they had been able to do them 'properly,' Rolled Gold stood to be thought of as their Ogden's Nut Gone Flake." --David M. Snyder (Popdiggers)"We were really excited about what we were doing and felt we were creating something fresh and new."--Alan "Bam" King"The Action never became stars, but Rolled Gold justifies the legend." --David Fricke (Rolling Stone)

OSBORNE-LANTHIER, JESSE Left My Brain @ Can Paixano (La Xampanyeria) OST 2LP
Haunter Records present Left My Brain @ Can Paixano (La Xampanyeria) OST, the follow-up to Jesse Osborne-Lanthier's As The Low Hanging Fruit Vulnerabilities Are More Likely To Have Already Turned Up (Halcyon Veil, 2016); Unalloyed, Unlicensed, All Night! (raster-noton, R-N 119EP), and Absolute Garbage EP (Haunter Records). A project five years in the making, unapologetically grandiose, dotted by contributions from dear friends Asaël Robitaille, v1984, and Marie Davidson; Left My Brain... is Osborne-Lanthier's most ambitious work to date. Musically, Osborne-Lanthier looks to the material composition techniques of grime, rap, modern classical, sound art, heavy metal, and more, to create something that is readily unique and oddly accessible in its singularity. Above all, Osborne-Lanthier maintains a taste for intensity as a tool for immersive engagement. The tracks on Left My Brain... are tactile and elastic, morphing rapidly from uncanny-valley EDM tropes to vast, sweeping expanses of sincere choral synths. The LP provides stark contrasts at every turn; sometimes heavily structured or freely fluid; symphonic or dissonant; minimal or intricate. Comes with double sided, silk-screened fold-out insert.

MONDO GENERATOR Cocaine Rodeo CD
Heavy Psych Sounds present reissue of Mondo Generator's Cocaine Radio, originally released in 2000. Prior to the formation of Queens of the Stone Age, bassist/singer Nick Oliveri recorded some originals with ex-Kyuss bandmates Josh Homme (guitar) and Brant Bjork (drums), plus Karma To Burn's Rob (drums) and others. But once recording was completed, Oliveri decided to shelve the tapes; it wasn't until several years later (well after Queens of the Stone Age began to establish themselves) that the bassist decided to release the songs on a friend's indie label, Southern Lord Records. Going by the name Mondo Generator, 10 tracks were compiled for the 2000 release Cocaine Rodeo. The majority of the songs are much more raw and hardcore/punk-based than Oliveri's output with QOTSA, as evidenced by such tracks as "Shawnette", "Uncle Tommy", "Unless I Can Kill", and "I Want You to Die".

PILGRIM, THE ...From The Earth To The Sky And Back CD
Try to travel with your mind: back in time, desert lands, cactus, dusty roads and a long journey. Think of stopping somewhere beautiful at the end of the trip refreshing your soul with a cold beer and a breathtaking landscape view. ...From The Earth To The Sky And Back is the perfect soundtrack for a mind travel or a real journey on a hot summertime day. Acoustic and electric guitars, percussion, banjo, and pedal steel mixed with mellow vocals that let you dream away. This is the band's sophomore album and is composed of 14 songs. The first part of the album is inspired by a classic country attitude mixed with a spaghetti western sound. The rest of the album presents different moments, while conjuring up atmospheres reminiscent of Santana, The Eagles, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Spirit, Captain Beyond, and recent Motorpsycho, you could simply file the genre under: acoustic, melodic, psychedelic folk. The first album Walking Into The Forest (HPS 092B-LP/LTD-LP/S-LP) has been a surprise success while selling out in one year and receiving the attention of many devoted followers who are waiting impatiently for the second chapter. Compared to the first album, ...From The Earth To The Sky And Back has improved the production, there are more songs arranged with drums and the album has been mixed and engineered by Shane Trimble. The fantastic artwork who really match with the album sound is made by Maarten Donders.

CORTINI, ALESSANDRO Sonno 2LP
Restocked; 2020 repress; gatefold double LP version. Alessandro Cortini is best known as the lead electronics performer in Nine Inch Nails' live unit. His recordings under his own name have gained prominence in recent years and he has become known as one of the pre-eminent Buchla masters in North America. Cortini makes a surprising departure into the 202 on his debut album for Hospital Productions -- Sonno. Sonno was recorded in hotel rooms, using a Roland MC 202 through a delay pedal, recorded direct, sometimes into a small portable speaker system. "I liked to walk around the room with a handheld recorder to hear where the sequence would sound better, turn on faucets, open doors or windows to see how the ambient sounds would interact with the MC 202/delay/speaker sound. It was very relaxing and liberating to make music this way." The result is a beautifully restrained yet oddly emotive album that's quite distinct from the overly academic approach so often undertaken by hardware-driven devotees. Mastered by Matt Colton.

KANG, EYVIND Ajaeng Ajaeng 2LP
"To be heard with ears half bent, or with one side facing what Maryanne Amacher calls 'the third ear'. The great reverence in which the Tanpura is held by Indian classical music, its transcendental but occulted place in the tradition alongside its normal function as a drone, made a strong impression on the composer such that it has taken decades to formulate even a simple Tanpura Study. The fundamentals, the Om, as well as the overtones, the music of the spheres -- all these have their valid rights, but in Tanpura Study they are embedded in a series of gestures, what I call signatures, on the melodic level. In 'Tanpura & Harpsichord', there is an encounter of overtones with chords braided into pun-notes, what Gerard Grisey calls 'degrees of transposition'. Taken together, this amounts to a non-spectralism in which, contrary to first impressions, there are no fundamental frequencies, even in the bass. Ajaeng Ajaeng: with respect to European string instruments, the technique col legno affords the direct encounter of wood and string, opening the way to a more tactile conception of the sustained sound, while bringing the materiality of the bow and its practices into question. In violin, viola, cello bows, Pernambuco wood offers an ideal example of extraction, colonialism, deforestation. With the Ajaeng, a Korean musical instrument, the situation is more complex. The dialectic of court to folk music, always political, always incendiary, may be heard here in the encounter of forsythia and silk, of Dae Ajaeng to So Ajaeng, and on a broader level of Dang Ak (Tang Dynasty music) to Hyang Ak (native Korean music) and their representations. Alternating music and sound, overtone arrays mingled with noise, marked by the bow change, in flamelike patterns which flicker, emerge, and fade again. A slow-down structure, also formalized in Time Medicine, seems to produce a long decrescendo, with the technique of the players drawing out the flicker patterns in a kind of game. The point here is not to produce a drone but to delve into the question of life in sound. This apparent emergence of life is due to the apparatus, what Marx calls a 'social hieroglyphic', which brings forsythia and silk together in technique, cultivated by practices which are themselves sustained by the real relations of student to teacher to student..." --Eyvind Kang, April 2020

DEMOLITION DOLL RODS Into The Brave LP
"The Demolition Doll Rods are back, Jack. Those masters of Motor City mayhem have returned. Perhaps the only band to be asked by a promoter to keep their clothes on, the Demolition Doll Rods -- who have not been in a studio together in fourteen years -- are set to unleash Into The Brave in October 2020. Formed in a Detroit basement in 1993, the Demolition Doll Rods are infamous for their rude, crude two-guitars-drums-no-extra-stuff rock 'n' roll, not to mention those minimal matching Doll Rod outfits, which included wearing hubcaps, doll heads and even swiss cheese. They recorded four very singular albums together -- starting with their outrageous debut Tasty in 1997 (coproduced by Jon Spencer and Mick Collins) -- but called it quits in 2007 when co-founders Margaret Doll Rod and Danny Kroha went their separate ways. Until last year, that is, when out of the blue Margaret suddenly reunited with Danny to perform some scorching live shows alongside new drummer Shelby Murphy. Any doubts that the Doll Rods still have it are blown away mere seconds into listening to Into The Brave, for this collection of twelve songs is as loud, crazy and demented as anything they have ever created). So here it is -- Into The Brave, another collection of nutbucket numbers only the Doll Rods could concoct." --Jimmy McDonough

ROBERTS, ALASDAIR Fretted and Indebted 12"
"The tunes I am indebted to my piping friend Donald Lindsay for 'The Blythsome Bridal', 'The Braes of Tulliemet' and 'The Smith's a Gallant Fireman', while Chief O'Neill's 'Favourite' and 'The Flowers of Edinburgh' were learnt from my fiddling friend Neil McDermott. 'The Blythsome Bridal' is used as the melody to a comic lyric called 'Fy Let Us A' To The Bridal' first published in 1706. 'The Braes of Tulliemet' lie near the Perthshire town of Pitlochry. 'The Smith's a Gallant Fireman' is also known as 'Carrick's Rant'. Chief O'Neill was Francis O'Neill (1848-1936), who was born in County Cork, emigrated to the USA as a young man and eventually became chief of the Chicago Police from 1901 to 1905. 'The Flowers of Edinburgh' was first published in James Oswald's Caledonian Pocket Companion around 1760. The guitars are fretted in the following positions as the tunes appear on the record: II, II, V, VII and V. The songs my family stayed in a haunted house in the village of Balquhidder for a very short while in the early 1980s after moving from Germany to Scotland. However, I only took to singing 'The Braes of Balquhidder' very recently after hearing a recording of it sung by the late Tim Lyons. The Seasons was learnt from the singing of the late Aberdeen singer Lizzie Higgins, daughter of Jeannie Robertson. Edinburgh-based Ulsterman Cathal McConnell knows many fine songs, most of which are collected in his book/CD set I Have Travelled This Country. I learnt this version of 'The Curragh of Kildare' from that source. The late Sheila Stewart of Rattray, near Blairgowrie, is the source of my version of 'False, False'. I would be unable to attribute my singing of Roberts Burns' 'The Silver Tassie' to a single source, owing to its general popularity in Scotland. I am forever indebted to all the fine singers and musicians mentioned above, and to many others unmentioned, for passing on songs and tunes to me over the years." --Alasdair Roberts, London, June 2020 Single-sided 12"; screen-printed B-side; includes download code; edition of 300.

Klimt present a reissue of Don Cherry's Relatively Suite, originally released in 1973. Finally, available again on vinyl. Recorded with the Jazz Composer's Orchestra. At this time, Cherry was becoming increasingly interested in Middle Eastern and traditional African and Indian music, having traveled extensively and studied with Indian musician, Vasant Rai. This suite of songs was particularly influenced by the Indian Carnatic singing tradition, as can be heard from the very opening moments of the album. Featuring Carla Bley on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums, as well as an extended horn and string section, Cherry collaborated extensively with the Jazz Composer's Orchestra throughout the early '70s. His Swedish wife, Moki Cherry, plays tambura on "Trans-Love Airways". Clear vinyl; edition of 300.

WORDCOLOUR Tell Me Something 12"
Growing up in Milton Keynes, the largest of the "new towns" outside of London designed and built in the 1960s, perhaps explains why producer Nicholas Worrall is subconsciously drawn to clearly delineated sonic structures and flawed techno utopianism, two concepts that are ever present in both his sound and aesthetic approach to music. Wordcolour was formed just two years ago, at a time when Worrall was habitually cutting up and splicing human voice samples ripped from YouTube memes, film dialogues, and musique concrète tapes. The first artistic demonstration of these ideas arrived in 2019 via his mixtape I Want To Tell You Something for the Blowing Up The Workshop platform. This unique set immediately grabbed the attention and support of the specialized music press and media, including Pitchfork and Resident Advisor. Tell Me Something is Wordcolour's official debut EP and heads straight for the dancefloor. It is comprised of an unusual melting pot of influences that fuse the UK club sound, post-dubstep and a style akin to Paul Lansky's '90s musique concrète. Tell Me Something offers a vibrant leftfield, avant-garde techno, and edgy electro, all immersed in the vast cosmos of the human voice. Solid silver color vinyl.

HAPPY MONDAYS Pills 'N' Thrills And Bellyaches LP
2020 restock. London Records present a reissue of Happy Mondays' Pills 'N' Thrills And Bellyaches, originally released in 1990. Pills 'N' Thrills And Bellyaches was Happy Mondays commercial peak, both a No. 4 victory (in the UK) and a benchmark album in history. That year the Mondays made a generation feel like the freaks were winning again, the dreamers and schemers hurtling in from the shadows to park themselves, like grin-faced goblins, in the daylight glare of the mainstream. Artwork lovingly replicated by original Manchester designers Central Station Design. Featured the singles "Step On", "Kinky Afro", and "Loose Fit". 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve; printed inner-sleeve; includes download code.

Limited version; 180 gram clear vinyl, printed slipcase and handwritten notes; edition of 100. Loneos present a reissue of Massimo Guantini's Diapositive, originally released in 1977. Beside the telluric year in pop music and culture, 1977 was still ranked as the future for Italian leftfield composers. Published by roman imprint Gemelli and credited to the elusive Massimo Guantini (none else than influential jazz player and composer Sandro Brugnolini), Diapositive is a fully cinematic journey in the realm of sci-fi and cool jazz. Fully produced at famous Roman Emmequattro Studios (home of many fascinating recordings by piano player Enrico Pieranunzi), the album is deeply rooted in the coolness of Italian libraries, showing an incredible musicianship. Fully adorned by a vibrant rhythm section, an acoustic piano, a clavinet, a Fender Rhodes, and proper "acid jazz" guitar-playing, this album will lift your mind and soul for good.

SPECIAL OCCASION The Word LP
Pristine rhythm and blooz for fugitive hearts from David C. Gray and Guy Gormley, originally released as a tape on Jolly Discs in 2017. The Word's sleek, synthetic urban pastorals collapse the space between the OCD pop geometries of Pyrolator, the opaque art-ache of Eno's Before & After Science (1977), and the sloooooow, sweet seduction of choice Jam & Lewis productions. Romantic but ever so slightly paranoid, all muted lovelorn horns, sighing synths and playful bossa/house-wise drum loops, it's true DIY in that it simply suits itself. Mostly instrumental, it's bookended by two Gray-sung songs, "The Hours I Wait" and the title track: drifting, downbeat, quietly devastating things, with a blue-eyed soul vibe judged just right (down-at-heel not flash with cash), and echoes of Scritti, The Blue Nile, Gareth Williams, Disco Inferno... but really the The Word has a sadness and sway all its own, and above all it feels of the now: with tight, tucked-in arrangements and ultra-lucid production (a Gormley trademark, but especially apparent here) that leaves just enough space to dream. LP in full picture sleeve.

I CAN I CAN'T I Can I Can't LP
Fire in the hold! LP/action-painting documenting the entire musical output/psychosis/self-immolation of short-lived North London destruction-unit I Can I Can't, all previously unreleased. Side one consists of six barking, bucking audiac anxiety attacks recorded to dictaphone in 2009, in a warehouse up the Seven Sisters Road: a-pause-button-controlled, high-speed-collision of skeletal trogged-out garage-punk and queasy electro-mechanical abrasions, eventually unravelling into uncanny, sublimely fatigued ambient tone-poems beamed direct from, and to, the eternal wet Tuesday afternoon of the mind! The bunkered, light-starved claustrophobia of the mise-en-scene hits you almost as potently as the kinetic energy it can't possibly contain: Chrome-cum-Index guitar scorch; bonehead drum clatter that sounds like some poor soul they've been keeping prisoner in the basement banging his shackles against the radiator; and maniacal half-shouted, half-sung vocals that hector and gabble and murmur and howl and effortlessly communicate the essence of the English Disease... look busy! If the piledriving, flat-rush one-chord death surf primitivism of "Favours In" is the sound of thwarted prison-break, the bruised minimal synth space-blooz of "Ah Ran Bee" is the sound of yer man being recaptured and heavily sedated, trying to make peace with what remains of his life sentence and taking up water colors. Hard to think of accurate precedents for this fiendish oscillating between detachment and rapture, demolition and dream... Vincent Over The Sink? This Heat's most pranged-out Cold Storage creations? Maybe Swell Maps' Train Out Of It (1984)? Shoes This High crash-landing on Another Green World? Side two is given over to a pair of studio creations that are more sensuous and hi-fidelity, heavily foreshadowing the band members' future work as Speedbooth, Bons, Jam Money, etc. under the umbrella of their Spillage Fete private press: the life-affirming, all-problems-solving, sunrise-over-suburban-rooftops heartburst of "Hobbyist", and the surreal, sleep-deprived kossack-dance of "Plume", which sounds everything and nothing like the mutant offspring of Pascal Comelade and Pram. I Can I Can't is the real thing: refined and anarchic, brutal and tender, insolent and withdrawn, a coming-together and a falling-apart, a pure unmediated expression of drudgery and ecstasy. The imagination that does not recognize its own dilemma in these songs... simply does not know the score! Includes printed insert and download code; edition of 250.

UFO95 Popularity is Overrated 2LP
Paris-based DJ and producer Anetha's enigmatic label Mama Told Ya is a collaborative venture. Pushing artists out of their comfort zone to new heights of experimentation and creativity, yielding progressive results that challenge and intrigue. The next instalment comes in the form of a kaleidoscopic debut release as a double-vinyl pack from French producer and A/V artist UFO95, titled Popularity Is Overrated. This will be the first double EP on the label, with previous records released as split EP four-tracker collaborations with artists and Anetha herself, including Niki Istrefi, Hadone, ABSL, and Sugar. UFO95 is a French electronic music producer, who finds his roots in '90s techno, UK jungle, and also through IDM, creating a unique tribal sound. His lives (live; live A/V) are like his music, dynamic and really hypnotizing. He releases his debut LP Popularity Is Overrated on Anetha's label, Mama Told Ya. As well, Anetha collaborates with a different visual artist on each project; Recsoverto takes center stage on the cover for this release, who combines ethereal visuals parodying Japanese video games and hyper-real typography. The record is beautifully eclectic and has the effortless feel of a live set from a promising new producer. Opener "Sun S4lutation" is a silky melodic affair, diving into a runaway breakbeat with a hypnotic edge crafting an effortlessly colorful trip. "2am" is a tense nosedive into techno's heady mutations, harnessing a prevailing kick and wormhole synths. Up next is the masterful collaborative track with Anetha "On/Offline". The track starts with an infectious energy, before vocal inflections and a dreamy hyper-real synth melody blend to hypnotic heights, transporting the listener to an open-air rave. "Should I Go" is heady and bold in its brutal drum work and twisting synths, "Enchanted Forest" is playful and addictive, "Rrkja" starts wild until heavenly synths glow around the edges, and "OE" carries the sentiment of amalgamation with a fierce kick drum and a symphonic chorus. Ending on a rough edged high, closer "Volcano" takes an IDM approach with glitchy drums, weaving synths, and groovy vocal inflections.

JAAR, NICOLAS Telas 2LP
"Four new chapters from Nicolás Jaar in Telas. Here, again, it's the odder and more essence-like devotion to sound that is semi-narrative, ambient, and concrète that we heard and were drawn to in Pomegranates. Telas gestures towards a more refined tone, with less sudden shifts and vignettes, incrementally shaping an hour of self-reflective music with tracks building and collapsing across its vinyl sides. When Telas was first drafted and presented to Mana it felt appropriate to mention a sense of monastic retreat. Where Pomegranates often felt epic-like in its scope and shifting scales, this album conveys images of quieter moments spent tending to a vegetable patch within a cloistered garden, perhaps, or the threading of a tapestry with filigree. Nicolás often moves slowly and deliberately throughout, focused on manipulating gauzy fibres and room tone or fluttering around other cryptic actors, so that when bursts of clarity and emotion appear they take on a deeper character. There's a greater sense of contemplation and patience in the album's logic, pointing to a conception of art, melody, and sound which is continuously under construction. In relationship with sister-album Cenizas and surface qualities of recent Against All Logic material it feels that there's a centre being defined and meditated upon. Telas was made between December 2016 and January 2020." Black & clear vinyl in gatefold jacket, with art by Somnath Bhatt. [Please note: remaining copies have a slight corner bump]

TWINKLE3 Minor Planets LP
"Minor Planets completes a trilogy of cosmically themed electro-acoustic albums by UK and Berlin based trio Twinkle3, 15 years in the making. This third installment is once again all about the unique synergies the group discover in combining free group improvisation with studio and musique-concrete techniques. The group's combined love of everything from Lee Perry to Noh Theatre via Karlheinz Stockhausen and King Sunny Ade lead them to respond musically to create a single universe where they all coexist and interact. Aleatoric analogue sequencing, chamber-like acoustic improvisation and dub treatments become distilled into a distinct and emotive narrative that takes us on an exhilarating hyperspace cruise to the outer reaches. Clive Bell is a virtuoso of the Shakuhachi. His aesthetic takes us on a timbral journey between noise and pitch, expressed and phrased rhythmically by the contour of human breath. This creates a perfect context and focus for a music that moves seamlessly between rhythm, suspension, time modulated analogue states, dissonance and melody. Richard Scott and David Ross share a background in acoustic free improvisation and have pioneered new approaches to rhythm using self-designed analogue systems. On Minor Planets these seemingly paradoxical orthodoxies cross-pollinate in a spirit of wonder and optimism to produce original and experimental music that is both life affirming and uplifting. Album artwork by Benjamin Kilchhofer captures the feeling of peering through the vacuum of space and catching a rare glimpse of the mysterious alien biomes, fossils, and silhouettes cast by dwarf planets, asteroids, Kuiper belt, and other trans-Neptunian objects."

SKODVIN, ERIK K Anbessa LP
"You know, hyenas aren't the bad ones... These days it's humans you should fear." Erik K Skodvin's first solo film score evokes otherworldly dreamscapes that capture the atmosphere of the film Anbessa (2019), shot in Ethiopia by director Mo Scarpelli. As a "creative" documentary the film follows Asalif, a 10-year-old imaginative boy caught between the ancient and the new, navigating modernization on his own terms. Asalif tries to make sense of things while living in a shed on the outskirts of Addis Ababa with his mom. A place where capitalism and "progress" is closing in on all fronts, and threatening their lifestyle. By becoming a lion (anbessa) he can fight back against the forces outside of his control. Pursuing escapism and moments in sound is something Skodvin has been dedicating his life to the last 20 years, with his various projects: Svarte Greiner, Deaf Center, Miasmah. Often in the darker, shadowy corners of sound, but never without glimpses of light and humanity. Anbessa can at first seem like an unlikely film to be his first venture into solo film scoring, and second in total, after his collaborative score with Raúl Pastor Medall for Birgitte Stæremose's thriller Darling (2017). But somehow, the playful, dreamy character of Asalif fits perfectly with his sound. The choice was made to mix field recordings from the film with the music, which creates a type of audio cinema that fully captures the atmosphere of Asalif's world: screaming hyenas, birds, animals, nature, Asalif repairing found electronic devices, talking and singing, seamlessly blend in with bowed guitars, electro-acoustic instruments, trumpets, long pipes, and clay drums, played by Skodvin and by Volcano The Bear's Aaron Moore. The result is an affecting journey. An escape into something hopeful. For the LP edition, the score is set to one vinyl side, while the other side has a series of lone field recordings with locked grooves that creates an eerie further immersion into the world of Asalif. A photo/screenshot from the film comes with the vinyl. Full-tone artwork. B-side contains exclusive field recordings and locked grooves. Includes insert; includes download code; edition of 500.

NOTWIST, THE Ship 10"
After six years, The Notwist return with three new tracks on Morr Music. It's both an exposition of the band's musical variety and a prospect on a forthcoming album. Six years have passed since The Notwist released their last regular studio album, but that doesn't mean that the members of this outstanding band have been idle in the meantime. There have been side projects, movie scoring, and other activities, like programming four editions of Alien Disko, a festival taking place in Munich, Germany. One of that event's regular guests was the Japanese duo Tenniscoats -- and a lovely side effect from that was an evolving friendship between the two bands. It lead to various collaborations: most recently in a new album by international band -- Spirit Fest (featuring Tenniscoats singer Saya and The Notwist's Markus and Cico) and a deep digging compilation of Japanese indie music called Minna Miteru (MORR 168CD/LP). The title track of this new EP is another step in this collaboration -- and a first step to an upcoming album by The Notwist -- as it features Saya, who lends her voice to the percussive song. It is built around a slightly detuned synth line, which is contrasted by more pragmatic guitar work. "It neither sounds like The Notwist, Tenniscoats, nor Spirit Fest", tells Markus Acher. "Just like Saya is saying in the lyrics: 'I want to go outside, I want to meet people', 'Ship' is another chapter in what The Notwist always tries to do: redefining itself, exploring something new, integrating different styles of music and collaborating with musicians they admire." The second song "Loose Ends" is, in contrast, more classic Notwist material. A gently expanding ballad, this time featuring the distinctive voice of Markus Acher. The song came out of recording sessions for the soundtrack for One Of These Days, a movie by Bastian Günther. The EP then closes with "Avalanche" a carefully optimistic instrumental. With its variety of styles, "Ship" also serves as an outlook on an upcoming album, which will be influenced by the band's experiences from their detailed work of creating sounds and moods for film soundtracks, and it will include more collaborations with international guest musicians. Three exclusive tracks; 10"; includes download code; edition of 1000.

HUBER, NICOLAUS A. Percussion Pieces CD
Nicolaus A. Huber speaks of a "luxurious world of percussion", given the variety of instruments and their technical capabilities. Instead of drawing on these resources lavishly, he makes a sparing selection for each piece, which in turn has important consequences for the work's sound, character, morphology, and form. With a reduced instrumentation, Huber aims for maximum differentiation of sounds, rhythms, and performance techniques. This CD contains world premiere recordings of his younger percussion works, written between 2007 and 2012. Johannes Fischer is celebrated as a "magician among percussionists" by the press and touches the audience with his effortless, sensitive and energetic music making. In addition to a solo performance career, Fischer is an active composer, improviser, teacher and conductor. In 2009 he was appointed Professor at the Lübeck University of Music. MAHNKOPF, CLAUS-STEFFEN Flute Music CD
The flute has a special place in Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf's oeuvre. What attracts him is its particular virtuosity, agility and ease in crossing large sonic spaces. He was still a student when he composed the alto flute solo "coincidentia oppositorum" (1986) and the flute solo "succolarity" (1989). From the "Angelus Novus" cycle, "La terreur d'ange nouveau" (1997-99) turned out to be a significant, substantial flute work. Then Shanna Pranaitis began performing Mahnkopf's flute music. This led to a cooperation that spawned the three most recent pieces: the solo for piccolo "Kurtág-Cantus II" (2013), the duo "Finite Jest" (2014) with the soprano Frauke Aulbert, and the solo for bass flute "atsiminimas" (2016). Together, these six pieces cover the entire flute family.

GROSSKOPF, ERHARD SprachKlang - VoiceSound CD
The electro-acoustic works by Erhard Grosskopf offer a grand insight into the pioneering days of the large electronics studios. Grosskopf was able to experiment with state-of-the-art analog technology at the Instituut voor Sonologie at the Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht; this is how "Dialectics" was created amongst others for the EXPO'70 in Osaka. In addition to the purely electronic version as it was heard in the German pavilion at the time, a performance with three live instrumentalists and tape is documented here: Eberhard Blum (flute); Hans Deinzer (clarinet); Vinko Globokar (trombone); Erhard Grosskopf (sound control). "Prozess der Veränderung" (Process of Change) and "Night Tracks" also originated in Utrecht in the early 1970s, where Grosskopf was a research assistant for a few months in order to be able to realize the compositions. The analog tapes were digitized for this publication by the Institute of Sonology, which is now based in The Hague. Performers: Eberhard Blum (flute); Hans Deinzer (clarinet); Vinko Globokar (trombone); Claude Lelong (viola); Erhard Grosskopf (sound control).

OFENBAUER, CHRISTIAN Zerstorung des Zimmers/der Zeit 2CD
Christian Ofenbauer's composition Zerstörung des Zimmers/der Zeit (Destruction of the Room/of Time) was created in 1999 as a sound installation for the Schauspielhaus Graz (6 scores: string quartet, zither, contra guitar, 2 violins, piano and amplifier system). The string quartet and especially the piano part have found their way into the concert hall. Taking up essential elements of his own compositions and placing them in a new context is one of the peculiarities of the Austrian composer. This is how the concert version for string quartet and piano was finally created in 2000, in which the original idea of the sound installation was taken up in a completely new way: the string quartet and piano form two temporal levels, metrically independent of each other, but together they are set to a duration of exactly 48 minutes. Both versions of composition Zerstörung des Zimmers/der Zeit, the piano quintet and the piano version from the installation, now appear in direct juxtaposition on this double-CD, recorded ingeniously by Quatuor Diotima and Johannes Marian.

HINDEMITH, PAUL "1922" Suite for Piano - Three Piano Sonatas CD
In a powerful surge in creativity, Paul Hindemith wrote three piano sonatas in succession in 1936 -- the year that was to end with a complete ban on performance by the Nazi regime. The premieres of the sonatas were canceled, but Hindemith nevertheless wrote music history with them. The sonatas differ as far as possible in terms of complexity and technical challenges, so the extremely demanding first is followed by a short, light-footed second one. Overall, they paint a differentiated picture of the composer, which Andreas Skouras ingeniously completes by starting with the "Suite for Piano from 1922". The Greek-German pianist and harpsichordist Andreas Skouras, born in 1972 in Thessaloniki (Greece), studied piano with Prof. Franz Massinger and harpsichord with Prof. Lars Ulrik Mortensen and Prof. Ketil Haugsand at the University of Music and Theater in Munich. He was u. a. awarded the City of Munich Music Scholarship and the Bavarian Art Award.

VON REUSNER, CLEMENS Ideale Landschaft - electroacoustic works CD
Clemens von Reusner finds the sound material for his electroacoustic works in unusual places. For "rückbau" (2011) he uses recordings of the demolition of a sugar factory. In "de monstris epistola" (2012) he refers to a work by the poet Jean Paul and uses sounds that were recorded at the places of Jean Paul's early childhood and youth in Upper Franconia. And "draught" (1999), 30 years after the Berlin Wall opened, is based on a variety of over- and underwater sounds on both sides of the Elbe. The origin of a sound, both physically and geographically, plays a central role for Clemens von Reusner when he dissects it electronically, as it were, and then creates "soundscapes" from the result.

FRESCOBALDI/NIKOLAUS BRASS/JOHANN JAKOB FROBERGER/DOMENICO ZIPOLI, GIROLAMO Figuren der Sehnsucht - Works for Meantone Tempered Accordion CD
Hans Maier builds bridges from the 17th century to the present. He plays music by Girolamo Frescobaldi, Johann Jakob Froberger, and Domenico Zipoli on the accordion, a still young instrument; he uses a historical tuning system, the meantone tuning. This not only lets the music of the early Baroque shine in its own colors: the composer Nikolaus Brass was also inspired by the juxtaposition of perfectly pure and very tense harmonies. He dealt extensively with the meantone tempered accordion and has written several works for the instrument played by Hans Maier. Two of them -- "Harmonies" and "Figuren der Sehnsucht" -- are part of the program of this CD, which shows Hans Maier as a stylistically versatile and adaptable interpreter. All compositions by: Girolamo Frescobaldi, Nikolaus Brass, Johann Jakob Froberger, and Domenico Zipoli.

Mesfin's recording career, captured in nearly two dozen 7" singles and numerous reel-to-reel tapes, shows the strata of the most fertile decade in Ethiopia's 20th century recording industry, when records were pressed constantly by both independent upstarts and corporate behemoths, even if they were only distributed within the confines of this East African nation. Though Mesfin was forced underground by the Derg regime that took control of Ethiopia in 1974, he has returned almost 50 years later with this triumphant set albums -- the first time that his music has been presented in this form. These albums give us a chance to discover a rare and beautiful moment in music history, in anthologies built from Mesfin's uber-rare 7" single releases and from previously unreleased recordings taken from master tapes. Wegene gives us a chance to discover a rare & beautiful moment in music history, in an anthology built from his uber-rare 7" single releases. DE'ANGELO/VIOLA KLEIN, JULION We 12"
"Julion De'Angelo builds his music around Florent Kandety's voice, which resonates with the Senegalese experience (Kandety was originally featured on Klein's A Passport And A Visa Stamped By The Holy Ghost, released on Meakusma in 2018). De'Angelo, who plays and records live percussion, works Kandety's way of expressing astonishment into a vast environment of arranged beats. His Detroit ambience combines vivid bass-lines on the subs and a patina-like finish, as if from a tape found in the sand while waiting for a bus to Dakar. Afro-Cuban rhythms offer shelter to the delicateness of De'Angelo's sound constructions. Vulnerability is transformed into wealth. The arrangement becomes a parade moving into the depth, the underground, the basement. Part one, 'N'aie Pas Peur (Exchange Mix)' might be like a triumph in minor heard while going downstairs. Arriving in the deepness, the party is just getting started with part two, 'Don't Be Scurred'. Mastered by Jose Rico. Viola Klein recorded in Saint-Louis, Senegal with the Sabar drummers Abdou Aziz, Abdoukhadre and Adramé Diop. She and the musicians have worked together before. On 'Exchange', released on Meakusma in 2017, the family Diop responded to deep house music, proposed by Whodat and Klein, which slowed the drummers down heavily. This time they release their whole energy, playing Mbalax rhythms. Now the response comes from Whodat and Klein. 'We (Part One)' embraces the drive of the drummers with Klein's hypnotic chord overtones as well as her bass, with both providing accompaniment to that fearless ride. 'We (Part Two)' is a beat by Whodat in combination with Mbalax. 'We (Another Part)' leaves four to the floor behind and tenderly opens up for the organ's way of paying attention to what the Sabar drums are saying, becoming a new rhythm included in their polyrhythm, giving glimpses of a futuristic floor. Mastered by Helmut Erler. We is published in union by the imprints Meakusma, Ominira and Viola Klein."

PLANET BATTAGON Trans-Neptunia LP
The prolific On The Corner Records present Trans-Neptunia, the mind-bending debut LP from Planet Battagon, exploring new dimensions in left-field experimentation, cosmic sampling and ancient drum machines. Seen drumming with Basement Jaxx, a long-night with a Pearl Syncussion SY-1 drum synth led to Planet Battagon's rhythm master Nathan "Tugg" Curran setting off on an intergalactic exploration, searching in the rhythmic seas between Saturn's rings, creating a full album's worth of super-sonic jazz-rave, the likes of which have never been heard. Planet Battagon's Trans-Neptunia was recorded over a couple of days by Tugg, on live drums, synth bass, synth drums, and FX in almost full improvisation with associates Martin Slattery (bass clarinet, alto sax, soprano sax, FX), Oli Savill (percussion), Mickey Ball (trumpet), and Jack Baker (drums). Avoiding the many pitfalls and clichés of both jazz and electronic music, the group jammed around a number of themes, whilst synth lines were triggered by Tugg making the machines partners in the group jams that laid the foundations of this album. From the wonky, twisting sonics of "Wezlee's Disco Inferno" to the frantic, scattered patterns of "Escape From Sedna" the EP is full of psychedelic textures and deep space distress signals, coded in a language transformed via earthly amplifiers to resemble a sound landing somewhere between the musical outputs of Sun Ra, Aphex Twin, Herbie Hancock, and Carl Craig. With early support from Gilles Peterson and The Wire, Trans-Neptunia is poised to further establish not only Planet Battagon, but the autonomous right to improvise of all imperfect drum machines.

JAAR, NICOLAS Cenizas CD
Nicola?s Jaar is a Chilean sound maker born in 1990. He is known in the club world for his various dance 12" EPs and remixes he put out from 2008 to 2011. Since his first full length (Space Is Only Noise, 2011), he has embarked in multiple divergent path. For the last seven years, he has released a large volume of recordings through his label Other People. In 2015, Nicola?s scored Dheepan by director Jacques Audiard (winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes 2015). In 2016, Jaar launched The Network, a web of 111 fictional radio stations done in collaboration with artists Jena Myung and Maziyar Pahlevan. In 2017, The Network became a book, published by Printed Matter in NY. In the spring of 2019, Jaar was commissioned for a nine-hour improvisation in the Oude Kerk Church in Amsterdam which he performed alongside two organists and a dozen surround speakers pointed at the ceiling of the church. Nicola?s is currently curating a residency for sound artists in the West Bank that takes place in a 130 year-old converted food storage shack in Bethlehem (within the Dar Yusuf Nasri Jacir For Art And Research ??? ???? ???? ???? ???? ? ?????.) In the fall of 2019, he presented Incomprehensible Sun, a sound and light installation in a 200-meter-long ex-military shooting range in Zaandam (The Netherlands) and Retaining The Energy, But Losing The Image alongside artist Vincent De Belleval which consisted of ten large rotating parabolic reflectors that capture and emit hyper-focalized surround sound. For the first Sharjah Architecture Triennale (curated by Adrian Lahoud in 2019). Nicola?s performed a piece for 16 buried speakers in the desert near the Mleiha Archaeological Centre. Nicola?s has collaborated with artist Lydia Ourahmane, FKA Twigs, and Patrick Higgins under the name AEAEA."Given all the technical ground Cenizas covers, Jarr is an impressively meticulous guide. SLAPP HAPPY Acnalbasac Noom LP
Last copies available... OFFICIAL RSD 2020 release. Acnalbasac Noom -- meant to be the German-English-American avant-pop group Slapp Happy's second album -- was originally recorded in 1973 but did not see release originally until 1980. Recorded with legendary German art-rock group Faust accompanying the Slapp Happy core of Anthony Moore on keyboards, Peter Blegvad on guitar, and Dagmar Krause on vocals, and with Faust's brilliant producer Uwe Nettelbeck at the helm, Acnalbasac Noom was initially rejected by the group's label Polydor as not being commercial enough. As a result, the band left Polydor, signed with Virgin, and released this album's tracks in a completely re-recorded version for their official second album, the self-titled Slapp Happy from 1974. Far from being simply an "alternate version" of that album, Acnalbasac Noom is a completely different beast from Slapp Happy. Simultaneously low-key and high-brow, the versions found here are damaged art-pop par excellence; the combination of Slappy Happy and Faust create a sound that defies era, sounding at times like anything from the artsier side of their contemporaries in the British folk-rock movement to damaged '90s indie-pop, the more accessible end of Yoko Ono's 1970s to an alternative universe Lynchian cabaret-lounge act. It's not often that an unreleased or "lost" album marks the pinnacle of a group's career, but with Acnalbasac Noom there's a strong argument to be made. Limited edition of 1,000 copies on translucent green vinyl.

OTTO World Greetings Cassette
World Greetings is a tongue-in-cheek welcome handshake to the world of commercial music from Otto, while also being a maximalist, unpredictable electronic journey. He's prepping a full album, also due on PLZ, that will contain more "delicate" pop songs, but wanted listeners to meet his most surrealist side first. "It's maybe like the bread basket before the meal," he explains, "but the bread is a deep-fried cheese ball with a fully ignited cheese sauce. Not necessarily a meal, but something to jolt the customer." The EP opens with the immersive, triumphant track "Greeting", before fizzling into life with the off-the-wall production of "Bathroom On The Bus": a high-octane club production that balances light flashes of synth melody with a rubbery bassline. Then there's "About You Now", a melancholic interpretation of the song first recorded by UK girl group the Sugababes, and made famous in the US by kids' TV star, Miranda Cosgrove. In Otto's version, the melody echoes out as if recorded in a deep cavern, while chaotic drum patterns erupt all around it, giving the impression that time is slowing down and speeding up at once. The EP reaches its frenetic peak with "Hiding From the Cops in My Range Rover", a skittering, paranoid track that was inspired by an infamous paparazzi shot of Paris Hilton. "I made 'Hiding From the Cops' very quickly in a common area in a dorm one Friday evening," says Otto. "I made it during a period where I was making mostly drum-focused tracks that I could program solenoids [electromagnets] to play. Also during this time, I would usually try and push the tempo as high as possible, making things uncomfortable but not 'too' uncomfortable."

WAYFARER A Romance With Violence CD
"Wayfarer is black metal of the American West. A cavalcade of fury, melancholia, and dust-laden storytelling; the band is informed by the fierce and adventurous spectrums of heavy music, along with the stark Americana of the 'Denver sound' artists that carved the identity of their home. In A Romance With Violence, their most fully realized effort to date, the band presents a searing silver-screen requiem for the myth of the West. This new work sees them at their most intense and triumphant, as well as at their most pensive. Bold, rhythmic and riff-laden, the band's pointed expedition across the frontiers of black and extreme metal are tinged with the grit and genuine air of artists like Sixteen Horsepower and Jay Munly, and the majestic heights of the Ennio Morricone/Sergio Leone collaborations. Through seven harrowing anthems of the high plains, the album paints a poignant exploration of heroes and killers, the setting sun on a romantic era, and the shadow it has cast on the world today. The band, from Colorado's 'Queen City of the Plains', has origins beginning around 2012. Guitarist/vocalist Shane McCarthy formed it with drummer Isaac Faulk (Blood Incantation), bassist/vocalist James Hansen, and original guitarist Tanner Rezabek. They would release 2014's Children Of The Iron Age and 2016's Old Souls via Prosthetic Records, after which they would replace the departed Rezabek with longtime collaborator Joe Strong-Truscelli as full-time guitarist. Partnering with Profound Lore Records in 2017, the band released World's Blood in 2018 on the label, ushering in the current chapter and paving the way for this new release. With the release of A Romance With Violence, Wayfarer fully manifests a sound that is uniquely theirs, and is unlike anything before it. Following its release, they will soon be seen bringing their shattered view of the American West to stages across the world."

VA Brown Acid - The Fourth Trip LP
2020 repress. LP version. "If you thought we were getting close to the end of the Brown Acid series with our last Trip, you were dead wrong... we're only just getting rolling. The well of privately released hard rock, heavy psych, and proto-metal 45s is deep and we are nowhere near tapped out. Most of these records were barely released and never properly distributed so they ain't easy to find, but they're out there if you're willing to dig... and we aren't afraid to get our hands dirty. Hard calluses have formed from handling the shovel and we've sifted through a lot of dirt, but we've dug up another ten tremendous records to share with all the heavy heads out there. This volume brings together eight insanely rare and skull-crushingly heavy 45s as well as two previously unreleased bangers. You may remember the Zekes' jaw dropper 'Box' from the First Trip. If you don't, you better go back and refresh your memory, you stoner. That song rips! And so does this previously unheard recording we legally obtained from the Beverly Hills records vaults. 'Comin Back' is the longest tune we've yet to include on this series and it's a full-on rager! The only surviving copy of this recording came to us on the original 1/4" master tape from Hollywood's long-defunct Demars & Duffy Music. We did our best to preserve the recording and we think you'll appreciate the rawness. There have been numerous groups named Bad Axe over the years, but the one you hear here is the baddest. This five-piece fresh outta high school kicked out this jam (and a few others) in a Chicago studio in 1973 just for the hell of it. As a garage band, they were previously named The Burlington Express and they went on to be known as Bitch, but these dudes hit their stride as Bad Axe and 'Coachman' is their crowning achievement. It went completely unreleased until 2014 when Permanent Records issued it and 'Poor Man, Run' as a limited edition 45 with a killer picture sleeve. It's long out-of-print and only obtainable now on Brown Acid. The rest of the records included on this volume vary in rarity, but at least two of them were virtually unknown until we discovered them. You'll win the lottery before you find copies of all of the original 45s in even the best record stores. Many of the records included in this volume are owned only by the members of the bands and some of the band members don't even have personal copies. That's just how hard these guys hit it back in the day! We're lucky some of these guys are still alive and well enough to give us permission to use their masters. And for that, we thank them. And you, for all your support. Brown Acid is here to stay... as long as you'll have us. Plug in, turn up, and freak out... this is what Rock n' Roll is all about."

VA Brown Acid - The Seventh Trip LP
2020 repress. LP version. "Everybody's favorite source for the hard stuff is back in business, with ten more lethal doses of rare hard rock, heavy psych and proto-metal! Hard to believe it's seven Trips in and they haven't lost any steam. As usual, these obscure tracks have all been licensed, the bands have been paid, and the sources are all analog. The quality of tracks seems to increase along with the number of Trips and this cohesive collection comes outta the gate with both guns blazing! Pegasus recorded one single in Baltimore in 1972 and they made it count. 'The Sorcerer' is a throbbing ripper that prior to this was basically unknown. The track title for the Nobody's Children single and start thinking, oh no, Riding Easy given up on bad trips. Fret not, 'Good Times' was originally written as a joke. The song has since been bootlegged numerous times and even covered by the Butthole Surfers, but this is the first time it's been fully licensed. This latest volume continues with many more boneheaded bangers, crunchy jams, and incredibly damaged heavy slabs. The closer on the Seventh Trip is one the label holds very near and dear. Not only is this record the one that's taken the longest to secure the rights to, it's also one of the very best examples of heavy psych ever heard. 'The Darkness' was recorded in a basement studio in Kansas City in 1969 when the lead guitarist was only 16. The band was from a rural Missouri town, played only one impromptu gig in Clinton, and pressed only 125 copies of this, their only single. It should come as no surprise that it sells for hundreds of dollars when it's offered. That's a small price to pay for such greatness."

R.I.P. Dead End CD
"When R.I.P. came crawling out of the sewers of Portland, OR four years ago, their grimy, sleazy street doom was already a fully formed monstrosity that quickly infected the minds of everyone it encountered. At the time, no one expected its depravity to take such fierce hold, and yet, here it is, sheltering in place and/or stealthily creeping through a nightmare dystopia that the '80s sci-fi / horror movies foretold. Dead End is, ironically, a recharge of the band's sound, bearing influences ranging from John Carpenter films, post-apocalyptic grunge, pro-wrestling attitude and salty lo-fi hip-hop aesthetics, to the band's ferocious heavy metal. During the three years since the 2017 release of their sophomore album Street Reaper, R.I.P. has been busy tightening their sound and their line up while loosening their grip on sanity -- touring the west coast with bands like Electric Wizard and Red Fang, and taking street doom overseas for the first time for a monthlong headlining tour of Europe. These years on the road and the addition of a more aggressive rhythm section have allowed the band to fully break free from their influences and deliver on the promise hinted at on their first two releases. For Dead End, R.I.P. worked with legendary producer Billy Anderson, interring onto wax their heaviest and most ambitious album yet. Continuing to move further away from their classic doom influences like Pentagram and Saint Vitus, the band offers a rare blast of originality in a scene rife with formulaic bands. Dead End is a fast and anxious ride where the very idea of doom is put to the test under duress of manic lyrics about death, insanity, and leather, and hook-laden guitar tracks that draw as equally from Nirvana as Black Sabbath."

JAGER, THOMAS V. A Solitary Plan CD
"Thomas V. Jäger is best known as the vocalist/guitarist in Monolord, the hottest, most crushing melodic doom band in the world. So, releasing an intimate, deeply and boldly personal album of acoustic and synth based songs hot on the heels of the band's most successful and powerful album to date, No Comfort, might seem like a risky move. And yet, that's not even the most daring and inspiring thing about A Solitary Plan. Rather, this seven-song album is a cathartic depiction of how some very real and heart-wrenching situations were dealt with by the artist with musical therapy and, hopefully, provides a catharsis for the listener as well. 'This album is me venting all of this emotional energy I've been carrying around,' Jäger says. 'Now I'm feeling more open about it, but at the start I had a hard time talking with friends and family. The record is what came out instead of talking about it.' The album began organically, as Jäger often writes and records at home, sketching out song ideas on acoustic guitar into a computer with no set goal for anyone else to hear them. RidingEasy Records chief and Monolord manager Daniel Hall cajoled the guitarist into sending him some of the home recordings he'd been working on, and he immediately pushed for them to be released in this stripped-down form. 'I could've rearranged them to get a Monolord vibe, but I wanted the basis of just voice, guitar and synths,' Jäger says. 'Really laid back and mellow.' He completed the album between tours, with mixing and mastering by Kalle Lilja at Welfare Sounds. Emil Rolof plays a real Mellotron on the title track, all other instruments and voices are Jäger himself."

FEATER Money LP
Three's a charm, as they say. After Waste The Time (IML 004LP, 2016) and Socialo Blanco (RBINC 002LP, 2019), Money completes Daniel Meuzard's Feater triptych. Again joined by the likes of Eric Owusu and Sam Irl and their musical as well as technical skills, as well as by the lovely voice of Vilja Larjosto, the ageless beauty and intellectual brilliance of Money is impossible to resist. It could have been imagined, written and recorded almost any time in the last 50 years. Inspired or -- better put -- troubled by the rise and transformation of capitalist systems, fatalism, extravism, climate change and -- surprise -- the power, corruption, and lies revolving around money, its topic is anything, but bubblegum. The music though, is ranging from powerful songs to clever synth experiments. Incredibly executed with a perfectly wonderful result. And even if Daniel writes that there is "no need to worry, I want you to panic," you should listen to this album, while you do so!

VA Gumba Fire: Bubblegum Soul & Synth Boogie In 1980s South Africa 3LP
2020 repress. Triple LP version. Gatefold sleeve; Includes a track not included on the CD version, Joshiba's "Gloria". Soundway present Gumba Fire, a new compilation of rare 1980s South African "bubblegum" and boogie. In 1980s Black South Africa, a local form of pop music evolved as the disco boom died down and slowly mutated. It was often ubiquitously described as bubblegum -- usually stripped-down and lo-fi with a predominance of synths, keyboards, and drum-machines and overlaid with the kind of deeply soulful trademark vocals and harmonies that South African music is famous for. Compilers Miles Cleret (Soundway) and DJ Okapi (Afrosynth Records) present a selection of 18 rare, handpicked 1980s cuts that highlight the period that nestles in between the '70s (where American-influenced jazz, funk, and soul bumped shoulders with local mbaqanga) and the '90s when kwaito and eventually house-music ruled the dancefloors of urban South Africa. Alongside French-Caribbean zouk this kind of music has slowly been making its way into the DJ sets of many of the most open-minded selectors around the world. This compilation is in many ways a sister release to the hugely popular compilation of Nigerian boogie and disco that Soundway released in late 2016: Doing It In Lagos: Boogie, Pop & Disco In 1980s Nigeria. The album takes its name from the band Ashiko's track that also features on the compilation. The term is derived from gumba gumba, the term given to the booming speakers of the old spacegram radios that broadcast music into South Africa's townships and villages. "Gumba Fire" later evolved into a phrase that refers to a hot party. Put this record on and feel the heat! Features The Survivals, Stimela, Hot Soul Singers, Zoom, Ashiko, Monwa & Sun, Ntombi Ndaba, The Black Five, Starlight, Zasha, Sabela, Condry Ziqubu, General Peter Maringa, and Ozila.

Go ahead, take your Johnny Carson-era jokes and see what they buy you. Puff your chest about NYC in '75 or London in '76 or L.A. in '77 to some 27-something today. Allow me to save you face and remind you to add in late '70s Cleveland. Because when you revisit this comp of struggling, straggling, oil-stank Cuyahoga River rats, it might sound like the most intriguing current day, underground punk. Here was compiler Mike Hudson (Pagans) and pals/enemies circa 1978-82 (when these rackets were recorded), glancing out bar windows to see 'hoods of crumbling warehouses and factories that, unlike in England, couldn't be blamed on the Nazis. Musically, they were inspired by the fifteen (give or take) forefathers of that early '70s Cleveland legend (Rocket from the Tombs, Pere Ubu, Dead Boys, Peter Laughner, Mirrors, electric eels). But instead of seeing them sit at bars complaining about their failed major label deals, simply saw them sitting at bars. The later '80s Cle action that led to some excellent post-punk was still in the burbs, and the mainstream radio world that once had a few of its biggest offices in Brownstown had given up on the leather 'n' spikes stuff. Hence, the amazing, idiosyncratic, clanky shuffling that permeates all the Rust Belt rants herein. From AM-radio hook-ghosts (Severe, Keith Matic, Lab Rats), to a few lingering legends (Styrenes' shambolic cover of eels' anthem 'Jaguar Ride' and Dave E.'s own Jazz Destroyers), trashy sarcasto-punk (the Pagans, with Pere Ubu's Davd Thomas on gtr/back-up vox on 'Boy Can I Dance Good'), slimey proto-core (Dark, Easter Monkeys), and a prostitute or two -- this 'scene,' as it were, might've been unseen in its dark day, but sounds surprisingly congealed on Cleveland Confidential. The soot-stained mood and context of this shit can't be replicated. And in a few decades it will seem as foreign as a gaslight. It might also seem like a dream. A time when humans could make music in abandoned storefronts, generally stave off the day job a few more months, and not just wander a barren landscape searching for food. Who knew end-of-the-'70s Cleveland would look so appealing?" --Eric Davidson (New Bomb Turks)

SPRAIN As Lost Through Collision LP
"Los Angeles-based outsider artists Sprain play downer music at cacophonous volumes. Their new album, As Lost Through Collision, unfurls threads of spidery '90s rock (think Unwound, Duster, Slint, etc.) and is a complex and cathartic exercise in tension and restraint. Formed in L.A. in early 2018 by Alex Kent and April Gerloff, Sprain's initial home-recorded forays into minimalistic slowcore resulted in their self-titled EP (2018) that distinguished them from the lo-fi pack through visceral expressions of depressed life. Soon, guitarist Alex Simmons and drummer Max Pretzer joined, folding tumultuous noise rock, drone, and flirtations with the avant-garde into the band's arsenal. Touring converged these explorations into Sprain's current sound: pure 21st century panic strained through a wall of piercing, feedbacking guitar amps. Written at home and refined on the road, these five new tracks are parts monolithic and minimalist, manic and mellow. Engineered by Josiah Mazzaschi at The Cave (Built to Spill, The Jesus and Mary Chain) and mixed by Tim Green at Louder Studios (The Melvins, Lungfish, Jawbreaker), the music here retains its organic purity and captures the band in its truest state. While the noticeable persuasion from '90s post hardcore and noise rock is palpable, this release takes cues from 20th century avant classical such as Xenakis and Penderecki. The end result is freewheeling and urgent, dynamic and destructive, and Sprain is marked by an aggressive versatility that has been sorely lacking in recent guitar music."

CATAPILLA Catapilla LP
Restocked. Trading Places present a reissue of Catapilla's self-titled album, originally released in 1971. Jazz-infused prog rock act Catapilla began in London in 1970, with saxophonists Robert Calvert (who later worked with Daevid Allen in various Gong spin-off projects) and Hugh Eaglestone, bassist Dave Taylor (of chart-topping pop act Edison Lighthouse, and later active in hard-rock group, Liar), along with drummer Malcolm Frith, guitarist Graham Wilson, and clarinet player/flautist, Thierry Rheinhardt; original vocalist "Lady" Jo Meek quit early (to work with the keyboardist, poet, and science fiction author, Julian Jay Savarin) and was duly replaced by her sister, Anna, whose gutsy gasps gave the band its noteworthy difference, along with the woodwinds and horns. Former Millionaires' bassist Cliff Cooper (who had worked with producer Joe Meek before founding Orange Amplifiers), brought Catapilla to the attention of Black Sabbath's manager, Patrick Meehan, who swiftly got them a contract with Vertigo, Philips's prog subsidiary; this self-titled debut has four freaky tracks, including the side-long closer, "Embryonic Fusion". 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve. Licensed by Cherry Red.

DE VITO, MARIA PIA Dreamers CD
Dreamers, Maria Pia De Vito's latest album, 'is a collection of works by songwriter icons Paul Simon, David Crosby, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and my beloved Joni Mitchell. Poets, lucid dreamers and social activists who, from the sixties onwards, have created timeless masterpieces of refined beauty, elevated by piercingly sincere poetic lyrics that embody the spirit of their time. These songs look backward and forward. Their impact didn't only dominate a historical moment but continues to be relevant to today's generation. Disarmingly, they reveal intimate feelings and experiences that powerfully resonate with the listener, the lyrics are a poignant criticism of politics and society, challenging the status-quo and unlocking minds to new philosophies and life views. They leave hope for change and inspire to build a better world: a just one. From the portrait of an island of peace as opposed to answering the call to arms in Vietnam -- in David Crosby's 'The Lee Shore', the soulmate in a dream Bob Dylan searches for in 'Simple Twist of Fate' or 'Carey ' by Joni Mitchell, criticizing the hypocrisy of society ('Be Cool'), social injustice ('Chinese Cafè', 'Questions For The Angels'), or the unscrupulousness of political power ('Pigs Sheep And Wolves'), to a song about compassion and empathy such as 'Rainbow Sleeves' by Tom Waits. Today, more than ever, we need this kind of 'poetic justice' from the arts, as a lighthouse for clarity and freedom to participate.'" --Maria Pia De Vito

FLEETWOOD MAC Live At The Boston Tea Party 4LP
2020 repress. By 1970 Fleetwood Mac were immensely popular, touring constantly both at home and abroad. In February 1970 the band rocked Boston's legendary Boston Tea Party playing three amazing concerts there for three consecutive nights in a row. The performances were recorded in hopes of releasing a live album but front man Peter Green soon announced his decision to quit the band and the masters were promptly shelved. These recordings -- eventually trickled out onto a few albums during the 1980s but with consistently poor sound quality -- were finally remixed at SRT studios in 1998. Four-LP "book style" collector edition.

CINDY LEE Model Express LP
"Cindy Lee, the performance and songwriting vehicle of Canadian artist Patrick Flegel (who fronted influential indie group Women earlier), previously stunned listeners with Act Of Tenderness, a heart-wrenching statement informed by the noirish core of celebrity, and has continued to enchant with every album, including the startling What's Tonight To Eternity released earlier this year. Model Express originally appeared as a self-released edition of 100 gold cassettes. The arch, filmic drama of Cindy Lee's songwriting -- realized with keyboards, guitars, aching voice and collaged, lo-fi production -- traverses a wide range of emotional and sonic terrain. The red velvet psych-pop of 'What Can I Do' gives way to the fluid 'Diamond Ring' like radio bursts from space. Model Express finds Flegel at both their most experimental and immediately melodic, and this first-time vinyl release recognizes the collected tracks as a pillar in the Cindy Lee catalogue. Cindy Lee (who uses the gender neutral pronoun they) is a drag persona drawing on suburban closet queens and mid-century divas. In keeping with Flegel's interest in the fault lines of identity, gender expression, performance and media, Model Express delivers an intense and diverse set of unforgettable songs."

REDMOND, GARETH QUINN Laistigh den Ghleo LP
2020 repress. LP version. 350gsm sleeve with selected UV high gloss varnish; WRWTFWW Records announce the release of Irish ambient/minimalist producer Gareth Quinn Redmond's Laistigh den Ghleo, a companion album to Satoshi Ashikawa's Still Way (Wave Notation 2) (WRWTFWW 030CD/LP). "Conceptually derived from the work of Japanese minimalist composer Satoshi Ashikawa, I have composed an album which hopes to engage, enrich and reflect the listener's surroundings, an Environmental Music" --Gareth Quinn Redmond. Working with Still Way as a base for inspiration, Gareth Quinn Redmond takes Ashikawa's meditative sound designs to more dramatic and lyrical landscapes, gracefully instilling his personal touch into the master's melodic patterns and presenting six pieces which blend and reflect the modern listener's ever-changing environment. As Midori Takada explains in the liner notes, "Even though Gareth is deeply influenced by Still Way, he looks above, toward the air and the sky. He pays respect to Ashikawa's approach, but adds bold elements from another dimension -- Satoshi Ashikawa aspired to crystallize the sound structure of nature that exists in the environment. Gareth tries to capture what flourishes out of it." Laistigh den Ghleo is released in conjunction with Satoshi Ashikawa's Still Way (Wave Notation 2) reissue on WRWTFWW Records. Liner Notes by Midori Takada and Gareth Quinn Redmond. LP version comes in 350gsm sleeve with selected UV high gloss varnish.
