ANIMALS, THE The Complete Live Broadcasts II 1964-1966 2CD
The weekend starts here. That was the invite you would have gotten when you tuned in to the best music show in the UK, nay, in the world every Friday evening from August 9, 1963 to December 23, 1966. The CD you have in your hands contains 13 tracks from the Animals on RSG, 27 tracks taken off US TV, nine tracks from French radio, and an interview with Eric Burdon. Three tracks from August '65 are by The Animals Big Band; the boys supplementing their stage presence with a brass section -- no British band had ever before sounded this close to an American black jump blues outfit. While The Complete Live Broadcasts I zeroed in on the songs, this set captures much of the atmosphere of the group's live performances. The Animals created dozens of superb tracks across their singles, EPs, and albums between 1964 and 1966 but the best way to experience the group was live. This set is the nearest equivalent to actually being there.

FLEETWOOD MAC Live 1969 (Oslo & The Hague) LP
Following the success of Live In Helsinki, this LP continues our documentation of the band's 1969 prowess, showcasing live sets from Oslo and The Hague recorded for Norwegian and Dutch TV respectively. Of the eleven tracks, seven were never recorded on a Fleetwood Mac studio LP. They range from Danny Kirwan's mournful "One Sided Love" through to an ebullient "Tallahassee Lassie". The final track is a lengthy "Rattlesnake Shake" which, as Mick Fleetwood explains in the sleeve notes, indicates the more improvisational approach the band would adopt. This LP captures the band as they evolve from a straight blues band towards something more innovative. All tracks recorded at Congresgebouw, The Hague on 28.02.69 for Dutch TV, except side two tracks three to six recorded at Njardhallet, Oslo on 03.11.69. Despite careful remastering, the tracks from The Hague tend towards the trebly; the Oslo tracks are of better quality but are not soundboard recordings.

USUELLI, TEO Il Fischio Al Naso CD
Il Fischio Al Naso (aka "The Seventh Floor") is a dramatic movie directed in 1967 by Ugo Tognazzi. Industrialist Giuseppe Inzerna, afflicted by an annoying hissing sound in his nasal passageway, is employed at the very modern Salus Bank and subjected to endless examinations, analyzations and treatments. The whistle in his nose eventually goes away, but other symptoms appear in its place. Inzerna refuses to consider himself sick, yet is afraid to go home, despite the advice of the doctors who employ various excuses to place him on higher floors as his illnesses multiply, each floor representing the next stage of the developing malady. Inzerna becomes increasingly alone and defenseless against his family, who plot and scheme behind his back until the tragic ending. Teo Usuelli (1920-2009) was a prolific composer of about forty soundtracks between 1950 and 1976 as well as important songs in the late '50s including "Meravigliose labbra," performed in 1959 by Johnny Dorelli. He was also an important researcher in the field of medieval and Renaissance music (transcribing popular and choral songs in a modern key) and teacher of composition at the Conservatories of Bologna, L'Aquila and Trento. In 1959, he met director Marco Ferreri, with whom he made an important artistic partnership by composing the music for famous films such as L'ape regina, La donna scimmia, Marcia nuziale, and Dillinger è morto. Here Beat Records present, for the first time on CD, Usuelli's soundtrack for Il Fischio Al Naso, assembled using the mono master tapes of the recording session, archived at Universal Music Publishing Ricordi. At the time, the Italian RCA released only a single (PM 3401) containing "La Conta", with lyrics by Tognazzi himself, performed by the beat band Le Pecore Nere, which can be heard in the opening credits and is reprised for the finale. The author reprises the main theme with fabulous baroque performances for orchestra, sometimes adding beat rhythms with electric guitars and a version with polyphonic choir alternated with lounge music. Usuelli composed a poignant requiem for the love scenes between the protagonist Giuseppe and his lover Giovanna which the composer also arranges in a waltz version with a beat flavor for the party scene organized by the patients of the clinic. Editing/mastering and liner notes by Claudio Fuiano. Graphic design by Daniele De Gemini. Includes 12-page booklet.

MORRICONE, ENNIO The Chosen (Holocaust 2000) CD
(Holocaust 2000) is a 1977 horror film directed by Alberto De Martino featuring a stellar cast that saw Kirk Douglas in the role of Robert Caine, a wealthy industrialist faced with the danger of a nuclear disaster planned by none other than the antichrist himself. Engaged in the design of a nuclear power plant in the Third World, Caine's opponents begin to disappear one by one, but soon the plot will take an unexpected turn. Ennio Morricone, two-time Oscar winner (first for his career and then for the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight), composed a score dominated by poignant themes and orchestrations devoid of cloying sentimentality that emerge in the opening credits amidst expansive collisions of sound that characterize the composer's experimental genius with a mellifluous flute and a female choir producing a dramatic and dazzling tension, giving further proof of the talent of this extraordinary musician in understanding cinematic signals and translating them into musical tapestries. The Chosen (Holocaust 2000) is now available in this ultimate edition, complete with unreleased material, and to distinguish it from prior releases that are now out of print, the CD is in the historic CDCR series (Compact Disc Collector Release) with original artwork by Alessio Iannuzzi, mastering by Enrico De Gemini, and liner notes by Fabio Babini. 12-page booklet.

MICALIZZI, FRANCO Italia A Mano Armata CD
For the first time on CD, the complete original soundtrack for Italia A Mano Armata by the great maestro Franco Micalizzi. An excellent score by the maestro that for this movie created a polyhedral soundtrack with a good deal of funk, whose powerful energy is given by the brass section of the orchestral. Included is the track "The No Peace Pursuit", selected by director Quentin Tarantino, included in the soundtrack of Grindhouse (2007). If you love the '70s it's a soundtrack you can't miss! CHIARAMELLO, GIANCARLO Quando Gli Uomini Armarono La Clava E... Con Le Donne Fecero Din-Don CD
Quando Gli Uomini Armarono La Clava E... Con Le Donne Fecero Din-Don (aka "When Women Played Ding-Dong") is a 1971 movie, directed by Bruno Corbucci. In prehistoric times, two tribes -- the Cavemen, who live on the mainland, and the Aquamanni, who live on stilts -- are almost always fighting with each other. During a period of peace, the young Ari, head of the Cavemen, wins, in battle with the Acquamanni, one of their virgins, Listra, with whom, however, he barely has time to entertain himself since immediately a new one contention breaks out between the two tribes. Although the fake-prehistoric setting and the title that refers to the two Pasquale Festa Campanile films set to music by Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai, this Corbucci film has nothing to do with those productions. Giancarlo Chiaramello, author of several scores for cinema and television has composed a pleasant score based on the recurring main theme "Troglomen" performed in the main titles by the Turin-based progressive rock band Gli Aluminogeni which derives from the surname of the leader and singer, Patrizio Alluminio. This song was printed in stereo on the A side of the single. For the first time ever, Beat Records release all the background music score taken from the master in mono of the original session kept in the Beat Record archives and the song of the single in stereo with a total duration of almost 76 minutes (including takes not used in the film). Funny themes alternate with other rhythmic ones with distorted electric guitars with a rock -- beat flavor for battle scenes, with a recurring love theme with a lounge flavor, with ethnic atmospheres. The chorus of Nora Orlandi performs in numerous tracks of this fun soundtrack that CFS and BEAT have absolutely wanted to restore and preserve on CD. Co-produced by Claudio Fuiano and Daniele De Gemini for CFSoundtracks and Beat Records editing/mastering by Enrico De Gemini and Claudio Fuiano. Graphic design by Claudio Fuiano and Daniele De Gemini. 12-page booklet.

DE ANGELIS, GUIDO & MAURIZIO Occhio Malocchio Prezzemolo E Finocchio CD
Occhio Malocchio Prezzemolo E Finocchio is one of the classic cult comedies of the '80s, the most prolific decade in Italian cinema for that cinematic genre. The movie is split into two episodes, the first featuring the absolute star Lino Banfi trying to find a jinx, and the second starring singer/actor Johnny Dorelli playing an amateur magician. Beat Records' collaboration with Cabum Publishing and the subsequent discovery in their vault of the complete original recording sessions, totally unreleased until now, gave the label the opportunity for a new release dedicated to the music for cult Italian cinema that will entertain with its fresh and funny style. The soundtrack also features "Sheriff", the main titles of the movie Uno Sceriffo Extraterrestre... Poco Extra E Molto Terrestre (1979), which together with the complete soundtrack of Occhio Malocchio Prezzemolo E Finocchio reflects the contents of this CD, the latest in Beat Records' ongoing series dedicated to Guido & Maurizio De Angelis. BRUBECK QUARTET, THE DAVE Time OutTakes CD
"'Time OutTakes features seven tracks that have never been heard before. These newly discovered recordings feature wonderful performances that are every bit as compelling as those on the original Time Out. We discovered that during the original 1959 sessions the Quartet also recorded 'I'm In a Dancing Mood' and an unlisted trio jam with a major drum solo that included snatches of the melody from 'Watusi Drums.' Two tracks from Time Out, 'Pick Up Sticks' and 'Everybody's Jumpin,' were achieved in one take so no alternates exist to include here. These seven new performances (and bonus track) are fascinating finds.' --Chris Brubeck 'We've all heard Dave Brubeck's Time Out -- but never quite like this. You'll hear Dave Brubeck's signature pieces afresh and anew. Listening to this album will make you rediscover why you fell in love with The Dave Brubeck Quartet featuring Paul Desmond, Joe Morello and Eugene Wright. This is mesmerizing music.' --Kabir Sehgal, Grammy Award Winning Producer 'Once the Dave Brubeck Quartet released Time Out in 1959, the world of jazz was never the same. Every note of the seven original compositions soared with wild originality and trained musical genius. 'Take Five' became the best-selling jazz single of the twentieth century. I've often wondered how this work of genius came to fruition in the studio? How did Brubeck develop such chemistry with alto-saxophonist Paul Desmond? Now the mysteries are solved with the historic release of Time OutTakes (alternative takes to the masterpiece that blew the hinges off the doors of jazz). What a high privilege it is to be able to be in the studio with the quartet as they innovate using 9/8, 5/4 and 2 bars of 3/4 alternating with 2 bars of 4/4 on such classics as 'Blue Rondo a la Turk' and 'Three to Get Ready.' All listeners of Time OutTakes will experience the Cold War era jazz revolution as it unfolded. What joyous music for the ages!" --Douglas Brinkley, CNN historian and Grammy-winning jazz producer

MUKDAD ROTHENBERG LANKOW In the Wake of Memories LP
LP version. Mukdad Rothenberg Lankow translates years of experience into music that unfolds in a sense of hope. Says Volker Lankow, "It comes from everywhere and nowhere." First meeting at David Rothenberg's "Nightingales in Berlin" project, the three musicians recorded this improvised fusion of experiences with oud, clarinet and percussion. A meditation on survival and resilience, on empathy and love. Each musician, a master of his instrument, seamlessly interweaves phrases and nuance each expressing pain and joy, expectation and relief. Wassim Mukdad is a refugee from Syria who escaped torture first to Istanbul now in Berlin. Volker Lankow worked with Medecins sans Frontiere in crisis torn zones and now with mentally ill criminals. Rothenberg, an author and philosopher, brings an exploration of the idea of sound to this trio. This is an album of music from an entire region of the world, crossing cultural barriers and tribal sides. An accomplished percussionist Volker Lankow performs on frame drums and tabla among other instruments. Wassim and Volker share years of rough experiences in conflict regions and in their playing together one hears a path toward clarity and beauty out of terrible shadows. "It is a delight to play with Volker, a percussionist who does not need to show off, who has nothing to prove." Wassim Mukdad met Volker Lankow as part of David Rothenberg's "Nightingales in Berlin" project which documented a group of musicians' attempts to play live with the birds in the dark parks of Germany's capital city. Clarinetist and author, Rothenberg was inspired by the rapport these two offered to each other and got the trio into Berlin's Studio Wong for one perfect day when all this music was improvised. Mukdad Rothenberg Lankow translate years of experience into music that unfolds with a worldwide sense of hope.

MORRICONE, ENNIO Veruschka 2LP
2020 repress. 180 gram vinyl. Dagored present Ennio Morricone's famous soundtrack composed for the 1971 Franco Rubartelli documentary Veruschka, Poesia Di Una Donna. The documentary was about the legendary Veruschka, the world's first supermodel and '60s/'70s icon, who appeared in several cult movies including Blow Up (1966), Salome (1972) and Couleur Chair (1978). In Rubartelli's movie, the viewer follows the beautiful model in a shockingly surreal journey through the rural countryside of Italy on a downward spiral of self-discovery that leads her through so many whacked out head trips; heavily dark and sad with some of the most stunning psychedelic eye candy you can find from the freak-out era of filmmaking, perfectly tuned with one of Ennio Morricone's best scores. WIDENER, JIMMIE I'll Be Satisfied: 18 Western Swing Rare Sides! LP
"Dear folks, this is a lifetime project. Collecting the complete Jimmie Widener discography is exemplary because some 78s sides are poor looks, like the Hercules labors, but here we are finely today. I started collecting western-swing in the late '90s and I was quite curious about that very talented artist, that had everything you need to meet success ... Jimmie Widener always had my preference, not only as a guitar player, but also as a singer, his unique voice was so sincere, fresh and swingin' at the same time. I never really quite understood why his career ended nowhere, after three recording sessions at the King Records studio, and what sessions! The cream-of-the-crop of the hillbilly jazz was there! What happened? And why did the King Records wait to put out these 1946 recordings in the early 1950s? We still have no clue... this young man had everything... He is probably the most obscure and undercover talent of the '40s western-swing scene. Not to mention this story of the three same Jimmie Widener is just so hard to believe. So folks, this is my tribute to the one-and-only, Jimmie Widener!" --Rodolphe Guiheux of Doghouse & Bone Records

SLEAFORD MODS Divide And Exit CD
Reissue of the classic 2014 album. Once dismissed around their native Nottingham as "two skip rats with a laptop" the Sleaford Mods have simply knocked all their distractors clear out of the way. From the 2014 press release: "Divide And Exit contains 14 tracks and the result is as immediately in your face as its vicious predecessor. Whilst Fearn's beats and loops will pull you up into the urgency of Sleaford Mods they also allow you to run the gauntlet from deliberate clumsy dance-floor swaggers to full-on punk throwabouts with them. Williamson is let free to spit out his unempathetic litany of bile and anger towards the bloated and tedious. His verbal salvos and side-swipes are often savage and brutal, yet at turns, hilarious, but always spot on as Sleaford Mods rage and despair as the country sinks deeper into a cesspool of its own idiocy. It's an album that doesn't have the privilege of luxury, indulgence or extravaganza and it will strike a resonant chord with many because it simply refuses to compromise."

VANNIER, JEAN-CLAUDE L'Enfant Assassin des Mouches (FKR 10th Anniversary Edition) LP
2020 restock. To mark its 2015 ten-year anniversary, the Finders Keepers label presents an improved, remastered repress, with updated liner notes in a gatefold sleeve, of its first release, a reissue of Jean-Claude Vannier's 1972 album L'Enfant Assassin des Mouches. At the time of the 2005 reissue the resurgence of '60s Gallic pop, once known as yé-yé music, had escalated beyond an interstellar height. Without a shadow of doubt, the flagship LP with the best odds on becoming a discerning household object was Histoire de Melody Nelson (1971) by one Serge Gainsbourg, an inimitable 45-minute concept LP handcrafted by a bass-driven psychedelic rock group and a heaven-sent 1001-piece orchestral and choral symphony. The album left hip hop producers and progressive rock aficionados crying out for more and more for years to come. This LP was in a league of its very own... or was it? The seldom-sung musical arranger for Melody Nelson, Jean-Claude Vannier, is the lesser-spotted tell-tale seal of sample-friendly quality when it comes to crate-digging "en Français." Suitably, rumors among French record dealers claiming "the band who played Melody Nelson recorded a follow-up LP" became a legend of psychedelic folklore. Another unconfirmed rumor about JCV taking the remaining outtakes of the beloved Melody Nelson to create a promo-only experimental rock LP left sample-hungry producers and DJs in turmoil... The answers to these mysteries lay between the gatefold sleeve of an undiscovered conceptual album bizarrely titled L'Enfant Assassin des Mouches by a custom-built avant-rock entourage called Insolitudes. So here we have it. For record-collectors looking for that special something, this LP contains the extra-special everything. Peruse the following genres: psychedelic, classical, soundtrack, jazz, hip hop, samples, avant-garde, funk. Then place a copy of L'Enfant Assassin des Mouches in each section. History notes that when M. Gainsbourg first heard the initial bones of this LP he took his poetic pencil to paper and composed bizarre liner notes, thus consummating the most extraordinary concept album of all time. The story "The Child Assassin of the Flies" was to be included as the only information to grace the LP's highly collectible concertina-gatefold sleeve. The story in full is reproduced in its native tongue on this very special re-release package. DJs and producers such as Jim O'Rourke, Stereolab's Tim Gane, and David Holmes have spent sleepless nights in perusal of original copies of this perfect release and now regard it as "One of the Best."

LUCIDVOX We Are LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code. Firmly established as an influential voice in the burgeoning Russian DIY rock scene, Lucidvox's incendiary mixture of atmospheric psych-rock, heavy riffs, and Russian folk mystery has already gained them both critical attention and audience loyalty outside of their hometown of Moscow. We Are (?? ????) is their first international album release and the next element in their rapid rise. Bands in which all or most of the members learn how to play their instruments just to be in the band are something of a special category in the history of popular music. British avant-gardists Wire and American roots hit-makers Creedence Clearwater Revival come to mind, as do, in varying degrees, post-punk legends like The Raincoats and The Slits. The individual player's inexperience becomes an asset -- they are free to create without the burden of past prejudices -- and the sound attains a mysterious balance. Formed in 2013, Lucidvox comprises four women based in Moscow: Alina (vocals/flute), Nadezhda (drums), Galla (guitar), and Anna (bass). The band's original repertoire consisted of cover versions of songs by Sonic Youth, Pixies, White Stripes, and Warpaint. Being in a "girl band" was, from the beginning, an essential and empowering concept. Lucidvox quickly became a tight circle that encouraged musical experimentation, emotional honesty, and future plans. After a year or so of playing covers, the band began to assemble original material, which had its own sonic footprint. And like everything else in Lucidvox, the songwriting process was highly democratic from the start. Unlike the majority of bands, this process allows all of them to contribute lyrics. The lyrics for the most part revolve around intense personal experiences. While Galla notes that the overall sound of the new album is "more powerful, more rock," the band's trademark post-Siouxsie and the Banshees squall is now more nuanced than ever. There is more depth and space, and more sense of the majestic rumble that the band conjures up in a live setting -- an experience in which the ensemble lays down an interlocked, almost krautrock-like groove. Even as their international reputation has grown, they have never considered singing songs in English, and in the band's sonic explorations, there has always been a subtle nod to Russian traditional music and folklore. Lucidvox is at the front of this growing wave, along with Moscow's Glintshake and the fast-rising St Petersburg band Shortparis.

LIRAZ Zan CD
Liraz, the highly touted Israeli-Persian singer, returns with a buoyant and border-busting new album. Shimmering electro-pop meets pulsing dance rhythms and retro Persian sonics. Includes clandestine collaborations with Iran-based musicians and composers. For her second album, Zan ("Women" in Farsi), the Israeli- Persian singer collaborated online with composers and musicians from Iran. Everything had to be secretive to avoid the gaze of Tehran's mullahs and secret police. The result is her private revolution, songs with a true message, music to make people dance and smile -- and above all, think. The songs on Zan are the fulfilment of a dream, taking Liraz deep into the soul of the country that fills her heart and populated the stories her parents told her as a child -- but one she's never seen. Her family, Iranian Jews, moved to Tel Aviv in the 1970s. Yet although Liraz was raised in Israel, she's always believed that "my culture is Iranian." The real revelation came when she moved to the US for three years to work as an actress, appearing in several big-budget movies, including A Late Quartet and Fair Game. In Los Angeles she found a huge Iranian community. When making Naz (2018), she wrote and sang in Farsi, the music at times exploring the sounds of pre-revolution Iranian pop music. On Zan, she worked with Iranian musicians, some anonymously, and let her voice and her music resonate further. One of those anonymous players, a female percussionist based in Tehran, features on the opening track, "Zan Bezan," (in English "Women, Sing") alongside Liraz's Israeli band. It's an insistent, catchy piece of electro-pop with heavy musical nods to Iranian pop stars of the 1970s like Googoosh; the message of female empowerment, however, is absolutely contemporary. Another secret Iranian collaborator worked on the powerful earworm that's "Joon Joon," where the dance beats erupt straight from a 1970s Tehran disco, while the big chorus implants itself in the brain and refuses to leave. Zan is an album of contrasts, like "Shab Gerye," the ballad that Liraz knew she needed to include "because the words and music fit so perfectly. It's a love song about reality," or the aching closer, "Lalai." The album continues breaking the walls her mother and aunts began to dismantle. But it does much more: it burrows under borders. It connects countries and cultures. Zan, Liraz insists, is the second chapter of the story that began with Naz. But it's also one that stands alone.

QUINTRON & MISS PUSSYCAT Goblin Alert CD
"This would be the first proper Quintron & Miss Pussycat full-length since 2011's Sucre Du Sauvage, and the duo's third for Memphis Tennessee's weirdo-rock label Goner Records. Produced by Greg Cartwright (The Oblivians/Reigning Sound) and recorded on 2-inch tape at Gainesville Florida's PULP ARTS studio, Goblin Alert picks up where Sucre Du Sauvage left off: snotty, semi-political, trash anthems like, 'Teenagers Don't Know Shit', 'Stroller Pollution', and 'Buc-ee's Got A Problem'. Also, for the first time ever, Quintron and Pussycat have ditched the drum machine in favor of New Orleans jazz-basher, Sam Yoger (Babes, AJ Davilla) on drum kit, and slinky Florida man, Danny Clifton (Room 13, Jane Jane Pollock) on hollow-body guitar. The resulting vibe is some kinda tweaked-out Miami disco dipped into a Mississippi mudslide, especially the tracks featuring Biloxi talk-box master, Benny Divine (aka Benni). And for the mystery lovers, there is 3/4 power-ballad entitled, 'Where's Karen', featuring backing vocals by Heather Lee (Room 13, Jane Jane Pollock), about a troubled girl who vanished on Mardi Gras day."

WILKINS, REVEREND JOHN Trouble LP
LP version. "To call the Reverend John Wilkins a national treasure would not be an overstatement. He is the son of pre-war blues/folk-revival legend Reverend Robert Wilkins and he leads one of the most exciting and uplifting musical acts on the blues and gospel circuit today. His multiracial, multi-generational band blends soul, southern gospel and hill country rhythm, into a sound that has the infectious drive of hill country blues with the emotional heights of a summer tent revival. Following in the footsteps of his famous father Rev. Robert Wilkins, a blues-singer turned preacher who went from the juke joint to the pulpit, the life of Rev. John Wilkins took a similar path. But in 2020 John Wilkins' life has been closer to a different iconic bible character, Lazarus, as he has miraculously risen after surviving a month-long stay in intensive care battling COVID 19 in a Memphis hospital. As Rev. Wilkins sings on the closing track of Trouble, 'I've come through the storm and rain, I've come through the storm and rain, and I made it!' And there is much to celebrate with this resurrection. Trouble, the aptly named new album, is a confident and joy-filled statement delivering the good-news gospel message unapologetically through music influenced by Ray Charles, Junior Kimbrough, Bill Withers and of course, his father. John Wilkins is one of seven children born in Memphis, TN to Robert Wilkin. The elder Wilkins was a pre-war innovator of the blues before turning to a life of ministry. John Wilkins started performing with his father when he was very young. Like the elder Wilkins, the lure of the blues was a temptation for the emerging guitarist. His musical reputation brought him session work at several of the Memphis legendary studios, including Stax, Royal Studios and Memphis Sound, among others. Wilkins performed and toured with the M&N Gospel Singers through the 1970's, before being called to preach. Since 1983, Wilkins has pastored Hunter's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church just outside Como, Mississippi, the same chapel whose choir recorded a classic album of spirituals with Fred McDowell in 1966. Since retiring from the Memphis Parks Dept. in 2006, Rev. John Wilkins has picked up his music career where he left off 25 years earlier. Trouble is the culmination of everything in Rev. Wilkins's remarkable life, his regional history, and his family music history."

PICCHIO DAL POZZO Picchio Dal Pozzo LP
2020 repress. 2011 release. Goodfellas present a reissue of Picchio Dal Pozzo's self-titled album, originally released in 1976. Picchio Dal Pozzo can be considered as the definitive "Canterbury"-inspired band coming from Italy's 1970 progressive rock scene. Their 1976 debut album shows an incredibly rich sound tapestry, made out of some peculiar ingredients. Oblique tunes and liquid harmonies, airy flutes, crispy horns, loads of electric piano and fuzz bass, drops of jazz, pop romanticism, waves of minimalism and deep pataphysical vocals and lyrics. The whole album develops through a sequence of highly composed material and wide open sound forms. A deep journey through a multi-layered soundscape with echoes of Hatfield & The North, Soft Machine, Robert Wyatt and Zappa. Picchio Dal Pozzo's first work was out on Grog Records and subsequently reissued only in Japan (Grog Records was an independent label known for releasing the work of Italian underground pop groups of the seventies such as Corte Dei Miracoli, Latte e Miele and Celeste). 180 gram vinyl. "One of the most original, impressive and highly respected of all the experimental groups to have come out of Italy in the 1970s" --Chris Cutler.

BLACK UNITY TRIO Al-Fatihah LP
"Black Unity Trio - Al Fatihah quite possibly was the first independently released free jazz record ever. Originating in Oberlin, Ohio as the Black Unity Quartet, and ultimately becoming the Trio (Abdul Wadud, Yusuf Mumin, and Hasan Al Hut), the group recorded Al Fatihah in December 24, 1968 at Agency Recording Studio (which was located upstairs in the building housing the legendary Agora Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio). The album ultimately was released in May 1969 in an edition of 500 copies. The album has been legendary among collectors, producers, and DJs in the past several decades, and has been sampled numerous times on other releases. Much mystery surrounded the origins of the album, as well as the status of the musicians, until 2020 when The Wire published an interview with Hasan. Many underground jazz purists know about the intense, though relatively short-lived hotbed of avant-garde jazz in Cleveland, Ohio during the mid-to-late 1960s. Clubs such as Leo's Casino, Jazz Temple, The Doan Club, Le Cave and a few private clubs saw many young avant-garde jazz acts during this time period. I first learned of Black Unity Trio when seeking out tapes of Albert Ayler playing at Le Cave. From that point forward, I had a mission to seek out the members and see if they would be interested in making a vinyl reissue of Al Fatihah. Most of my efforts ran into dead ends, and it did not take very long to learn that the members, perhaps, were content with letting the record fall into the annals of crate digging history. Then in 2019, I received a phone call from someone referring to himself as 'Ron'; who wanted to bring some tapes by the pressing plant. Whenever I get a call on the subject of tapes, my first question is 'how old are the tapes?'. The caller replied 'late 1960's''. Of course, this perked my interest even more, so I asked what sort of material was on the tapes, to which he replied 'Oh, spiritual jazz''. 'Really?'; I replied, even more interested than ever - particularly since the caller id showed a 216 area code phone number. Then he proceeded to say 'it's called the Black Unity Trio''. I about dropped the phone; 'Are you serious, I have been trying to get a hold of you guys for a year!' I replied. Ron (Abdul) was surprised by that statement. But, it led to months of additional conversations with both he and Yusuf about how to get the record back into the world, and eventually I was introduced to Hasan as well. After many phone conferences, we were able to come to an agreement to reissue this seminal free jazz record via Gotta Groove Records' OHWax series. Yusuf personally brought the original 1968 master tapes to Cleveland in early 2020, and we have been working on the audio restoration and package details ever since. We have spared no expense in making this reissue. Our friend Grammy-Award recipient Paul Blakemore's restoration and remastering work cleaned random ticks from the original source, as well as greatly improved the balance to bring out some of the instrument subtleties which were barely, if at all audible, in the original pressing. We also used Gotta Groove's proprietary GrooveCoated stamper plating technology -- This involves an additional electroforming step in the creation of the metal stampers used to press the grooves into the records. GrooveCoated stampers have a lubricious surface which helps high frequencies in particular to be held more intact during the course of manufacturing, verses traditional stampers. This is a record I am truly proud and excited to be working on, and I look forward to a new generation of vinyl listeners to have access to it." --Matt Earley, Executive Producer.Beautiful pressing, gatefold sleeve with extensive liner notes. The Black Unity Trio was: Joseph Phillips (Yusuf Mumin): Alto Sax, Ron DeVaughn (Abdul Wadud): cello, bass; Hasan Abdur Shadid (Hassan-Al-Hut, AKA Hasan Al-Hut): Percussion.

OBERLAND AND IRENA Z. TOMAZIN, FREDERIC D. Arba, Dak Arba LP
Frédéric D. Oberland and Irena Z. Tomazin's Arba, Dâk Arba was conceived as the soundtrack for the eponymous installation piece by the French artist Fanny Béguély. First presented as part of the group exhibition "Panorama 21 - >Les Revenants" at Tourcoing's Le Fresnoy Studio National des Arts Contemporains in December 2019, Béguély's chemically painted photographs focused on humankind's propensity for self-examination and its attempts to probe the mysteries of the past, present and future. Oberland's heavily processed electric hurdy-gurdy, the "boîte à bourdons," provides the foundation upon which the Borghesia member Tomazin unfolds her gripping vocal magic(k). Their dense mesh of soundscapes and singing mediate between the mystic and the modern, the natural and the all-too-unreal to further examine our persistent desire to decipher the signs we find in nature. As the first collaboration between these prolific experimental artists, Arba, Dâk Arba is as evocative and thought-provoking as the art that has inspired it. It's easy to see why a curious instrument like Oberland's electric hurdy-gurdy would be well suited for the duo's ends, and within its first few minutes the opening track "Grotta" makes it clear that the Oiseaux-Tempête co-founder is more than capable of weaving dark psychedelic sound tapestries with only limited means. The ritualistic energy that Béguély's Arba, Dâk Arba draws on is channeled through abstract drones that mirror the aesthetics of the eight suspended paper rolls the artist's audience were faced with. Even as the sound of the boîte à bourdons becomes more visceral and Tomazin's voice more discernible, "Grotta" remains as intangible as the mythological oracles that had informed the work of Béguély. Shorter pieces like "Amena" or the closing track "Hereafter," though condensed, offer just as much to decipher -- a whole musical world to get lost in. "Fumes" and "Hieromancy" in the second half of the LP are the best examples of how much creative friction lies at the heart of the French experimentalist and the Slovenian singer's collaboration. While in the former song, Tomazin first takes the lead singing uncanny, circular motives before stepping aside so Oberland can let the processed sounds of his hurdy-gurdy evolve into chilling crescendo. Blurring the lines between the physical and psychic as well as the real and the hallucionary with their music, Frédéric D. Oberland and Irena Z. Tomazin's Arba, Dâk Arba is one of the most radical albums in recent years. 180 gram vinyl.

MOOD TAEG Exophora LP
Mood Taeg is a musical project split between Düsseldorf and Shanghai. The musical style of Mood Taeg reflects a love of German experimental music from the 1970s and the legacy that it has in other musical styles such as hip-hop and electro. The function of Mood Taeg is to create music that incorporates the motoric drumming of Jaki Liebezeit and Klaus Dinger, the melodic sensibilities of Neu! and Kraftwerk, and the experimentation of Can, Cluster, and Harmonia to produce extended instrumental metronomic compositions that are contemporary and at the same time fit exactly within the lineage of their influences. Mood Taeg see their music as uncompromising but totally accessible. They don't believe the form dictates the art; the art dictates the form. Thus, songs can be ten minutes long with long passages built on motorik grooves punctuated with vocal samples featuring anything from political lectures by Michael Parenti to sections from Michael Halliday's books on systemic functional linguistics. Mood Taeg record all of their music at their home studio, Lowell's Garden, and combine digital recording techniques with old analog synths and instrumentation. The band is part of the wider Mood Taeg Kollektiv that includes musicians, graffiti artists, DJs, photographers, painters, and video artists. The project was started in 2016 as a musical outlet for Kollektiv members Lowell Freeman, TDK, and K'ko but it is also a project for fellow Kollektiv members such as Faible who creates visuals for the band. For fans of: Can, Neu!, Kraftwerk, Cluster, Harmonia, Camera, Jane Weaver, Kid Loco, Mogwai.

CALE, J.J. To Tulsa And Back 2LP+CD
2020 restock; double LP version. First vinyl edition; 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves; includes CD. A reissue of JJ Cale's To Tulsa And Back, originally released in 2004. The song "These Blues" was used on an episode of Dog the Bounty Hunter. Personnel: JJ Cale - vocals, guitar, synthesizer, banjo, all other instruments; Shelby Eicher - fiddle, mandolin; Christine Lakeland - guitar; Don White - guitar; Bill Raffensperger - bass; Gary Gilmore - bass; Walt Richmond - keyboards; Rocky Frisco - keyboards; Jim Karstein - drums; Jimmy Markham - harmonica."On his first studio outing in eight years, the mythical Okie troubadour turns in a solid set of his trademark dusty blues tunes. What is not so typical, as with Travel-Log from 1990, is that Cale steeps himself in technology and evokes the moods and frameworks of music that intersect with the blues or stand in opposition to them. The keyboards, drum loops, and horns on this record are as pervasive as the guitars." --All Music

One of the most influential bands in the last five decades, Kraftwerk virtually established the blueprint, the source code even for electronic music. This early live performance, in Soest, Germany in Winter 1970, broadcast on WDR-TV displays the band in superb form. Arguably, the future of electronic music, trance, techno, ambient -- started right here.

MAIGUASHCA, MESIAS Oeldorf 8 CD
First-ever official reissue of the Ecuadorian composer Mesías Maiguashca's stunning electroacoustic composition Oeldorf 8 on vinyl and CD. Mesías Maiguashca (b. December 24th, 1938 in Quito/Ecuador) is a composer of neue musik, especially electroacoustic music, who studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Quito, at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY (1958-65), with Alberto Ginastera at the Instituto di Tella in Buenos Aires, at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne and, after a short return to Ecuador, attended the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt and the Fourth Cologne Courses for New Music in 1966-67 where he studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen. From 1968 to 1972, Maiguashca worked closely with Stockhausen in the Electronic Music Studio of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Cologne and joined Stockhausen's ensemble for performances at the German Pavilion at the Expo '70 in Osaka. In 1971 he became a founding member of the Oeldorf Group of composers and performers. The Oeldorf Group, named after the small village 40 km away from Cologne where they lived and worked in a rented farmhouse where they set up their own studio for electronic music and studio productions, was a musicians' collective active during the 1970s. Thanks to a long-standing contact with the Westdeutscher Rundfund, the core members of the Oeldorf Group (Peter Eötvös, Joachim Krist, Mesías Maiguashca, and Gaby Schumacher) received commissions for compositions, invitations to perform in the Musik der Zeit concert series, as well as having many of their summer concerts recorded for the late-night broadcasts of WDR3. One of these commissioned compositions was Oeldorf 8: a retrospective portrait of the Oeldorf Group consisting of a series of ten short pieces for four instrumentalists (clarinet, violin, cello, electric organ/synthesizer) and tape which may be played either simultaneously or continuously without a break. It premiered in 1974 at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse and was released on LP two years later. Conceived as a sonic diary with an edge to encompass radical electronic synthesis, the 48-minute composition is a thing of wonder; from the outset, Maiguashca's spoken introduction of the players and concept gets slowly eroded by errant, pointillist electronic sound -- which then lets loose for ten minutes before a swarm of slowly rising held tones comes to the fore. On the second side, the acoustic sounds are annihilated by a rising pulse-wave drone, an almost Roland Kayn-esque climax of raw oscillator gristle. Remastered by Kassian Troyer at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. LP version comes on 180 gram vinyl; gatefold sleeve; includes download code.

ARURMUKHA 14.11.90 (an acoustic psychogram) LP
Re-release of the album which Marc Weiser (Rechenzentrum, zeitkratzer) and Jürgen Hendlmeier (producer for The Flaming Sideburns, Thee Ultra Bimboos) created as Arurmukha. With the use of soundbites, field recordings, and stylistically diverse tracks, they reprocess the eviction of 13 squats on Mainzer Straße in Berlin-Friedrichshain in November 1990, forming it into an acoustic scenography in the style of the "Maifestspiele" by Einstürzende Neubauten. 14.11.2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the clearing of 13 squats on Mainzer Straße in Berlin-Friedrichshain. The violent confrontation between the police and about 500 squatters, involving armored vehicles, helicopters, and ten water cannons, was the biggest police operation in Berlin's post-war history, with 4000 officers deployed, and is deemed to be the last big "battle" of left-wing squatters in Germany. On the occasion of the anniversary, the Berlin label Karlrecords is making a contemporary document that has been out of print for more than 25 years available to the public again. The album 14.11.90 by Marc Weiser and Jürgen Hendlmeier was originally released in 1993 as a vehicle for them to work through their personal experiences as contemporary witnesses of the eviction, on the label Goldrausch-Tonträger, which was founded for the release. The project's name, Arurmukha -- "avaricious demons", is a term from Vedic mythology, here alluding to the capitalist logic of exploitation guiding the West German corporations that bought out the former GDR after reunification. Shunning the popular clichés of squatters, the duo processes original recordings of the clearing action, as well as material from radio and TV as their musical-textural starting points, composing them into a densely packed acoustic psychogram, recounting the events of the time with dramaturgic skill, in chronological sequence over the course of the two sides of the vinyl. Armed with a sampler as their main instrument they create an acoustic scenography which, as a sonification of memory, pits itself against oblivion. While constructed as a soundtrack, the heterogeneity of its styles gives the album the character of a compilation, aggregating drones, industrial, electronics, post punk, outsider music, and political texts into an imaginary meta music film of resistance. The subject matter and music may suggest comparisons with Einstürzende Neubauten's piece "Maifestspiele". Selected for the re-edition of the LP: a picture by the Berlin photographer Harald Hauswald. Despite its age, the album is an alarmingly relevant one, with its contents not having lost any of their urgency. 180 gram vinyl; includes insert and download code (numbered).

RAINE, LENA Reknowing LP
Local Action and Lena Raine present Reknowing -- a multi-disciplinary series of remixes and reinterpretations of the BAFTA-nominated composer's landmark debut album Oneknowing (LOC 016CD/LP, 2019). A multiple-award winning composer, Raine is best known for the soundtrack to 2018's video game Celeste, a break-out indie success story that tackles themes of anxiety, self-examination, depression, and more. Considered one of the great modern game soundtracks, it was recently named one of the best of the last 20 years by Pitchfork. Since Celeste, Raine has rapidly expanded her CV, working on both independent (in-development painting adventure Chicory) and major soundtracks alike (she composed the music for Minecraft's recent Nether Update release), while also releasing Oneknowing, her 2019 debut LP that Noisey described as "taking her soundtrack sensibility into luscious new realms, positioning her as one of the most exciting modern composers." A year on from Oneknowing, Local Action present Reknowing, a companion piece that sees the album re-interpreted by a carefully selected international group of artists, composers, and soundtrackers. Three of electronic music's finest current artists feature in Yamaneko, Ziúr, and breakout techno star Anastasia Kristensen, as does one of video game's most respected modern composers in Yasunori Nishiki (best known for his work on Octopath Traveller and the recent Final Fantasy 7 remake). Elsewhere, Finnish composer Jukio Kallio, who contributed to Raine's Celeste soundtrack, emergent TV and film soundtracker D'Anthoni Wooten, and the mysterious lycopene complete the package, offering seven unique takes on one of music's most exciting creatives.

FERRARI, LUC L'Escalier Des Aveugles LP
2020 restock. "L'Escalier des Aveugles, or 'The Stairway of the Blind', was commissioned in November 1990 by Spanish National Radio (Radio Nacional de España). Asked for a piece to premiere as part of the European Day of Music, Luc Ferrari returned with a radiophonic concept that organised his anecdotal music into montage form, sequencing short, elusive narratives in a successive way. The completed composition is formed of thirteen chapters containing a mixture of environmental and synthesised sound, commentary, chatter, and encounters with people and places. Each focuses on a small event within this playbook, and Ferrari notes that each 'in addition to being a realistic photograph, will be the subject of a 'setting to music': fragments of voice and atmosphere will be sampled and will produce musical matter or a 'song'.' The sonic language of Madrid forms the setting to which Ferrari lays out the persistent theme of the piece, that of the composer being guided throughout the city by a young woman. Using a game-like structure (liners for this edition include Ferrari's 'Regles de Jeu', or 'Rules of the Game' which act as a script or score to the piece) the motivation is posed: imagine that one day you are told 'I know a place in Madrid that sounds amazing (or bizarre)', to which you reply 'Let's go to it together.' The recordings toy with the relationships between guide and tourist, translator, director and actress, and masculine and feminine that emerge as Ferrari and the actresses follow this action, documenting the shared experience and connections they make as they visit these places. Six actresses guide Ferrari (and the listener) through locations simultaneously ordinary and sonically rich: the metro; the El Corte Inglés department store where we hear the gossip from changing rooms set against music emanating from the PA; vagabonds declaiming their political stance in the Conde de Barajas plaza; interactions buying apples in a market; the reverberant and spacious halls of the Prado Museum where one actress gives a moving description of her favourite painting - Goya's The 3rd of May 1808. Ferrari replies in French to their comments in Spanish, and there are several self-referential plots, devices, and word games that flirt with the poetics and rhythm of language and sound. A recital of Lorca's poem 'La Casada Infiel' in 'Hommage À Lorca' in amongst the location recordings feels striking, and the call and response of 'La Nouvelle de L'Escalier', where one of the actresses descends the staircase of the blind - a long stone stairway in Madrid proposed to Ferrari as an interesting location to visit during the trip by producer José Iges. She replies to Ferrari's vocal enunciation of the place (and title) in French - 'L'Escalier des Aveugles' - with the place-name in Spanish: La Escalera de los Ciegos. Using this repeated title and image of the staircase of the blind as a symbolic place, a line is drawn to a situational landscape experienced and diffused through snapshots and allusion rather than holistically overviewed, sound conjuring pictures within the imagination. In the sensorial qualities of Ferrari's treatment of emotion and language -- fortified with electro-acoustic motifs and musical properties -- the piece accelerates towards a render that is truthful, beautiful, yet also surreal; somewhere between theatre and reality, a gonzo cinema of the ear. Vinyl cut at D&M from original DAT master tape. Includes a 12-page accordion-style booklet with documents from Luc Ferrari's archive."

WIRE Pink Flag LP
2020 restock; LP version. "Wire's first three albums need no introduction. They are the three classic albums on which Wire's reputation is based. Moreover, they are the recordings that minted the post-punk form. This was adopted by other bands, but Wire were there first. It has been a number of years since these albums were readily available. The aim with these new vinyl and CD releases is to approximate the original statements as closely as possible, but with remastered audio. The vinyl releases have the same covers and inners as the originals (minus the Harvest logo). The digipack CDs have identical track listings to their vinyl counterparts. These versions should be considered Wire's classic 1970s albums, pure and undiluted. Usually contextualized against a backdrop of two years of the growing cultural importance of punk rock--Wire's debut Pink Flag, released in December 1977 on EMI's progressive label Harvest was in fact was something 'other.' To the keen cultural commentator, the timing and label of its release will register two essential facts about it. Firstly, too late (a year after the Pistol's debut release) to be part of UK punk's first flush and secondly that the band were signaling something beyond punk by their choice of label. Further investigation would reveal twenty-one tracks, some of them clocking in at well under a minute and covering a range of tempi well beyond the buzzsaw rockabilly that had become, even by the second half of 1977, punk's staple."

If Pink Flag proposed an almost cut and paste approach to deconstructing rock history, Chairs Missing proposed something more radical, a definite futurism with much less influence from its antecedents. Chairs Missing was at once more stark and more lush than its predecessor and has exerted its own influence on the course of cultural history, having laid down one of the earliest (if not the earliest) blueprints for the genuinely post-punk aesthetic."

WIRE 154 LP

"1979's 154 represented the final tableau in Wire's Harvest released '70s triptych and was the first Wire album to be released to a universal set of five star reviews from the British rock weeklies, thus it represented the point when the British 'pop culture establishment' publicly recognized Wire's primacy. '154 makes 95 percent of the competition look feeble' wrote Nick Kent in the NME, 'Wire are achieving a lot of things other--and more recognized--names have been striving for' wrote Chris Westwood in Record Mirror (a paper that had slagged off Pink Flag). 'The album is a musical tour de force' wrote Jon Savage in Melody Maker. Many said it was the album that Bowie and Eno had failed to make with Lodger (as hinted in the RM review), it was on John Lennon's playlist. Without a doubt, even if record sales did not bear it out, Wire had 'arrived.'"

CRAIG & MORITZ VON OSWALD, CARL Attenuator 12"
Collaborators and close friends since the foundational years of Berlin and Detroit's spiritual and musical partnership, two undisputed pioneers of electronic music, Carl Craig and Moritz von Oswald, continue to expand on a shared musical vision. "Attenuator" is the first production to emerge from a series of studio sessions in Berlin and Detroit over the past two years, with more material to come in the near future. Although originally produced in unison, this two-sided single sees both Craig and von Oswald deliver their own distinct take on the material, each fluidly expanding on their uniquely intertwined heritage. For his take on "Attenuator", Carl Craig leans further into the fluid blend of track-led techno and warm musicianship that remain central to his work, building stifling tension as a prelude to a fervent brew of warm pads and celestial sax. Headstrong and deep, Craig embraces his dancefloor nous without sacrificing a moment of beatitude In response, Moritz Von Oswald bathes the brass and the bliss of "Attenuator" in the accomplished dub texture he's long been known for, unspooling layers of musicianship to roll forward a loose, fresh and equally fulfilling atmosphere, one that still maintains the arresting pulse established at the heart of the duo's sophisticated, futurist philosophy.

EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN Alles In Allem LP
Repressed; LP version. After more than 12 years, Einstürzende Neubauten's long-awaited new studio album Alles In Allem is finally going to be released. The album marks the quintessence of the band's output, opening yet another unexpected door in 40 years of ongoing sound research by a very experimental group of musicians around Blixa Bargeld. This band, like nearly no other, has managed to create a musical cosmos. It has, in fact, built up its own genre by uniquely combining edgy sound with sophisticated poetry. Appropriately, in the Year of the Rat -- the symbol of ingenuity and versatility according to the Chinese zodiac -- the band is not resting on the laurels of its last four decades. Instead, it curiously continues to explore everything that the sound universe has to yield, with one eye on the future and with boundless playfulness The unique sound and textual landscapes of the band, founded in 1980 in Berlin, reveal the timelessness that Blixa Bargeld, N. U. Unruh, Alexander Hacke, Jochen Arbeit, and Rudolph Moser have continuously maintained. And yet, through experimental approaches to songwriting, instruments developed over four decades and collective input, the band sounds remarkably cutting edge within its own time. In fact, through its individual brand of music the Einstürzende Neubauten seem to always command each and every manifestation of the here and now -- whether industrial in its early years, the driving beats of the 1990s or its more considered later work. The verse "Wir hatten tausend Ideen / Und alle waren gut" (We had a thousand ideas / And all of them were good) from album track "Am Landwehrkanal" could easily be perceived as the band's description of itself. The sum total is a special compilation: Alles In Allem, Einstürzende Neubauten's first regular studio album in 12 years, presents an incomparable band that defies categorization to create a genre all its own.

The enigmatic figure will always be most associated with his exceptional skills on the melodica, a plastic toy instrument that is used to teach schoolchildren the rudiments of keyboard melody, but his oeuvre encompassed so much more. In fact, the man was one of Jamaican music's most important record producers, as well as being a session keyboard player of considerable renown. Moods Of Pablo collects some individual moments of Pablo's work which somehow drifted into the orbit of Bunny Lee, a producer with his fingers always in a broad range of musical pies; futuristic cuts of "Queen Of The Minstrel," "Hold On," "Fatty Fatty," "Heart Don't Leap," and "The Drifter" give way to ten thematic roots dubs from King Tubby's studio, each with melodica firmly in place, morphing rhythms such as "Barb Wire," "Everything I Own", and "Miss Wire Waist" into another dimension.

DILLINGER Top Ranking Dillinger CD
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Dillinger's Top Ranking Dillinger, originally released in 1977. One of Jamaica's most popular "deejays" or rappers, Dillinger was one of the few Jamaican sound system toasters to rise to international prominence as a recording artist during the mid-1970s. Born Lester Bullocks in 1953, he was raised by his grandmother in a peripheral neighborhood located on the outskirts of Kingston. After moving into a tough ghetto area in western Kingston, he became a protégé of Dennis Alcapone, the star deejay on an influential set called El Paso, and was known as Young Alcapone until the maverick producer Lee "Scratch" Perry renamed him Dillinger, cutting a dozen or so tracks at Dynamic Sounds studio in 1973, of which the most noteworthy was "Dub Organiser," which saluted King Tubby and his sound system. Recordings for Phil Pratt, Augustus Pablo, The Abyssinians, and GG Records led to an impressive album for Studio One, but it wasn't until he began recording for Ossie Hibbert and Joseph Hoo Kim at Channel One that the world took notice, following the dramatic success of Island's CB200 album and its breakthrough hit, "Cokane In My Brain." The album Top Raking Dillinger was produced by Bunny Lee in 1977 and sees the toaster in fine rapping form over some of Lee's toughest contemporary rhythms, including Ronnie Davis's "Hard Times" for "Rat A Cut Bottle" and Johnny Clarke's update of Alton Ellis's "Cry Tough" for "Ranking Of The Past." There are also roots mutations of past classics, including Cornell Campbell's take of Bob Marley's "War" for "War Is Not the Answer," Johnny Clarke's version of "Waiting In Vain" for the cheeky "Check Sister Jane," a cut of The Silvertones' "Smile" as "Three Mile Rock," a horns-laden take of the perennial "Get Ready" as "Judgement Day Rock" and a version of "Melody Life" as "Don't Watch Your Wife."

BEANY MAN The Invincible Beany Man (The 10 Year Old D.J. Wonder) CD
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Beany Man's The Invincible Beany Man (The 10 Year Old D.J. Wonder), originally released in 1987. Dancehall superstar Beenie Man has enjoyed a career unmatched for its length and diversity. Born Moses Davis in 1973, he claims to have started toasting on his uncle's sound system, Master Blaster, at five years old; during his harsh youth, he became a semi-wild creature of the streets and lived as a near homeless person, suffering from malnourishment, before music became his ultimate salvation. His debut recording, "Too Fancy," was produced by political "enforcer"-turned-producer, Henry "Junjo" Lawes, after he won a popular talent contest where the price was a recording contract, though nothing much happened with that particular release. Beenie Man recorded his debut album for hit-making producer Bunny Lee, released as The Invincible Beany Man (The 10 Year Old D.J. Wonder), while he was already a steady fixture on Lee's Unlimited, a vintage sound system established in 1968 in Springfield, a small town in the eastern parish of Saint Thomas, and then one of Jamaica's most prominent sets. On the album, his flow is well-honed, his chatter sounding entirely skillful and confident, the rhymes flowing from his mouth with ease and fervor. On one track, he even dares to compare himself to Bob Marley and as the future would prove, such bragging was not some idle boast! In the best dancehall tradition, the rhymes are relayed over the barest of electro synthesizer rhythms and the subject matter of the chatter is all over the place; on the opening track "Woman Labba Labba" he warns of loose female tongues, relates sound system battles on "Sound Boy Kuffing," appeals to his peers "Try Some Hustling" and decries the anatomy of thin ladies on "Bony Punanny" (over a harsh "Freedom Blues" recut); he praises the general allure of females on "Girls Nowadays," warns of the potential of bothersome insects to ruin a romantic tryst on "Insects Nuh Bother We," and relates the prevalence of gun crime and the negative impact of cocaine along the way, among many other topics. Even though the original track list was a bit out of sequence with the songs themselves, the youth's incredible potential is entirely evident throughout.

WAYNE (WITH SLY, ROBBIE & THE AGGROVATORS), JOHN Boogie Down CD
The Jamaican dancehall artist known as John Wayne was born Norval Headley in 1962 in rural St Elizabeth. He first reached the studio in the early 1980s, recording "Racket Girls In Jackets" for the Root Out label, where you can already hear the fearsome skill unleashed by Wayne at the microphone, showing why he was a favorite of top-ranking sound systems such as Black Scorpio, Kilimanjaro, Jammy's, and Studio Mix. In 1983 he traveled to New York, appearing on a 12" of Sugar Minott's "Jamming In The Street," while the Hoo-Kim brothers paired him with Johnny Slaughter for "Rain Fall, Sun Shine." That same year, Bunny "Striker" Lee produced his only album, titled Boogie Down and issued by Vista Sounds in the UK. Because Striker had access to such killer rhythms, the album is a real treat. Opening track "Jailhouse" rides a slow "Queen Of The Minstrel" recut, patterned similar to Welton Irie's "Army Life"; the aptly-named "Heavy Rhythm" recounts his skill at rhyming, "African Princess" praises black women over a sparse recut of "No More Will I Roam," "Bend Your Back" speaks of various aspects of ghetto life, before Side One closes out with title track "Boogie Down" on the immortal "Late Night Blues" rhythm. On side two, "Bubble With Me" uses a "Drifter" recut to give a massive salute to Bunny Lee and the engineer Professor at King Tubby's studio; "Too Greedy" rides a "Real Rock" recut while the self-referential "Go John Wayne Go" rides Johnny Osbourne's great "Yo Yo," the result so appealing that it gained airplay on John Peel's influential radio show in England (and Wayne keeps up the pressure on "Murder Style" and closing number "Me Deep" too). Wayne scored a massive hit in 1985 when Jammy placed him on "Sleng Teng" for "Call The Police" and he went on to record for George Phang, King Tubby, and Witty Henry before becoming a producer himself. Sadly, John Wayne died of kidney failure in 2014, so we are fortunate that Boogie Down captured the man at the peak of his powers.

WILSON, DELROY Better Must Come CD
Radiation Roots present a reissue of Delroy Wilson's Better Must Come, originally released in 1971. Delroy Wilson was one of the best-beloved vocalists in the history of reggae. Born in 1948 in the infamous slum of Trench Town, Wilson is regarded as Jamaica's first child star, having signed a contract with future Studio One founder, Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd, at the tender age of thirteen. Wilson was blessed with a mellifluous voice and his strong range and expressive tone made him a natural for recording. Debut album I Shall Not Remove caused a sensation on release in 1964 and as Jamaican music evolved in the mid-60s the hits kept coming. Delroy's second album, Good All Over (1969), was another landmark release of the early reggae phase, although he had already begun recording for other producers, most notably teaming with Bunny Lee for a smash rendition of The Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart Of Mine." As Jamaica geared up for an era-defining general election, Delroy Wilson and Bunny Lee captured the public's imagination with "Better Must Come," which topped the charts in 1971. The popularity of the song was such that leftist candidate Michael Manley adopted it as his campaign theme, leading to a landslide victory the following year. The Better Must Come album was recorded at Dynamic Sounds, then the best-equipped studio in the Caribbean region, with Bunny Lee in the producer's chair and Sid Bucknor and Carlton Lee as resident engineers. In addition to the opening title track, there is a range of classic Delroy here: "Better To Be Loved" puts his soulful delivery over a creeping "John Crow" organ skank; "Can't Explain" describes the passionate allure of his new lover, while "It's You I Love" grafts Delroy's soulful tenor atop a sparse reggae riff, before "Dance With You" recalls a missed opportunity on the dancefloor. The determined "Try Again" is delivered in heavily accented patois, before Delroy drifts into reggae-funk territory with a killer cut of The Isleys' "It's Your Thing"; "Keep An Eye" warns of deceptive friends with ulterior motives and the organ-heavy "Drink Wine" salutes the uplifting qualities of fermented grapes, before closing things off with an alternate reading of Shep and The Limelights' "Stick By Me." Adding to the appeal is an individual drum sound, lively guitar picking and variations on the organ skank, keeping things interesting throughout.

HOLDEN, RANDY Population II LP
Restocked; LP version. "'Godzilla just walked into the room. People just stood there with their eyes and mouths wide open.' To hear Randy Holden describe the audience's reaction in 1969 to his solo debut performing with a teeth-rattling phalanx of 16 (sixteen!) 200 watt Sunn amps is about as close as one will get to truly experience the moment heavy metal music morphed into existence. However, at last Riding Easy have unearthed the proper fossil record. Population II, the now legendary, extremely rare album by guitarist/vocalist Holden and drummer/keyboardist Chris Lockheed is considered to be one of the earliest examples of doom metal. Though its original release was a very limited in number and distribution, like all great records, its impact over time has continued to grow. In 1969, Holden, fresh off his tenure with proto-metal pioneers Blue Cheer (appearing on one side of the New! Improved! Blue Cheer album and touring for the better part of a year in the group), aimed for more control over his band. Thus, Randy Holden - Population II was born, the duo naming itself after the astronomical term for a particular star cluster with heavy metals present. 'I wanted to do something that hadn't been done before,' Holden explains. 'I was interested in discordant sounds that could be melodic but gigantically huge. I rented an Opera house for rehearsal, set up with 16 Sunn amps. That's what I was going for, way over the top.' And over the top it is. The six-song album delves into leaden sludge, lumbering doom and epic soaring riffs that sound free from all constraints of the era. It's incredibly heavy, but infused with a melodic, albeit mechanistic, sensibility. Troubles with the album's release bankrupted Holden, who subsequently left music for over two decades. It was bootlegged several times over the years, but until now hasn't seen a proper remaster and has yet to be available on digital platforms. 'The original mastering just destroyed the dynamics of it,' Holden says. 'They flattened it out. Now we got a really nice remaster that should be the closest thing to the original recording.'"

COOPER, MIKE Playing With Water LP
From Mike Cooper: "Playing With Water is a novel written by James Hamilton-Paterson. I was introduced to his writing by the Australian poet Peter Bakowski who gave me a copy of his book Seven Tenths - The Sea And Its Thresholds; a book that influenced my record Globe Notes and subsequent works immensely. Another of his books Playing With Water: Passion And Solitude On A Philippine Island is about exactly what the title describes it as and provided me with the title. The first edition on my Hipshot c.d.r label in 1999 was titled Kiribati and was dedicated to the people of that Pacific Island nation as I shared their concern, then as now, with the fact of rising sea levels due to global warming which threatens to destroy or make uninhabitable their low lying island homes. That album was the start of a long musical and artistic journey for me . . . Cities such as Venice, Bangkok, Jakarta, London, Manhattan or any coastal, or near a major river, city will be subject to serious flooding and subsidence and may well become uninhabitable in the same way in the very near future. Bangkok was previously known as 'The Venice Of South East Asia' and its now roads were once canals . . . Jakarta is currently sinking at such an alarming rate that the Indonesian Government is building a new capital city in Kalimantan (Borneo) Several of my albums subsequent to Kiribati -- Globe Notes, Rayon Hula, Reluctant Swimmer/Virtual Surfer, Fratello Mare, Raft, Oceanic Feeling-Like (with Chris Abrahams) and now Playing With Water are all conceptually concerned with this same subject. Another conceptual thread connecting them is my concern for the co-habitation of the human and non-human world expressed through my use of unprocessed avian or insect field recordings of song, signs and signals. Climate change, as well as the destruction by humans of the natural habitat of many species, is disturbing the balanced relationship we need to have with nature. Indigenous and small, often nomadic, coastal communities are very aware of this balance and the incursion of the industrial world into their way of life is having disastrous effects which will (if not already) have similar effects and repercussions on ours. There are field recordings on this edition from Pulau Ubin, Ko Phayan, Ko Lanta, Sri Lanka, Bangkok, St.Lucia and Martinique; all places that can look forward to or are already witnessing the Postdiluvian Future . . . My guitar playing here, as always, draws on a number of styles and genres influenced by Hawaiian Slack-key and lap steel guitar."

GUIDED BY VOICES Vampire on Titus LP
2020 black vinyl repress. "We are pleased to announce a new vinyl pressing of the classic Guided By Voices album, Vampire on Titus. Although there were several different pressings in the 1990s, this is the first since 1998. This edition features a new master cut at Golden, is packaged in a sturdy tip-on jacket, and includes Bob's original insert, now enlarged to a more readable size. Originally released in 1993, Vampire was not unique at that time in its 4 track recording methodology, but it was perhaps the first to garner major media attention. Many minds were blown, and a few were baffled enough to return the album to the store, believing the crude sound meant their copy was defective. Vampire occupies a unique place in the GBV discography. The album is a snapshot of a brief time in the band's history, a turning point after having broken up the previous year. It does not include any older or last-minute material. Although sonically consistent, the songs exhibit tremendous variety, skirting several genres and many moods. The lineup is just a trio: Robert Pollard and brother Jimmy with Tobin Sprout. Although it could be described as one of GBV's 'difficult' LPs, it has several songs that could've been standouts on Bee Thousand or Alien Lanes. It was their first album that was not self-released. It is an innocent album, unaware of its audience, and fearless to the core as only true outsiders can be. As such, Vampire on Titus is an essential piece for even the more casual fan of the band. It's also just a damn good album that's held up to repeated listens for a quarter century."

PARRISH, THEO Chemistry/Untitled One 12"
2020 repress, from 2008. "... 'Chemistry' is one of the immediate tunes that you can't help but fall in love with -- an undeniable synth hook merging effortlessly with 'Boom, Bip, Geetar Compounds' from Adi Dick. Andreya Triana, Vito Money and Om'Mas Keith, meanwhile, repeat an idea over and over: 'The chemistry was meant to be,' a line as simple as the sentiment it's trying to express. Parrish builds, builds and builds until you find yourself in another register altogether and ready for a house track to send you into orbit. 'Untitled One' doesn't have the strike-you-down-where-you-stand appeal of 'Chemistry,' but it's one of those aforementioned growers. Piano, guitar, bass and drum all futz around in an attempt to establish a groove, but it never really grows into anything until Parrish takes things down and transforms what had been shards of piano into a coherent lick. At that point, things congeal into something akin to a funk march. This is Parrish at his most psychedelic -- helped in no small part by the noodling guitar -- and it's just as complex as anything that Villalobos has put to wax. Stunning." --Resident Advisor

VA Italia New Wave: Minimal Synth, No Wave, & Post Punk Sounds From The '80s Italian Underground LP
2020 repress. What exactly happened in the Italian underground/post punk scene of the '80s, is not entirely clear. Therefore, this collection of 13 incredible tunes helps track down the feeling and focuses on the blurry images of a period that was mixing influences from the UK/USA scenes with a more "national" approach to new music developments. The damage began in 1977 when a series of urban/suburban musical agitators, whether skilled or complete amateurs, decided to embrace instruments as weapons for a war against sonic stereotypes. Here's the result: a multiform sonic attack that marks the history of a movement that may have remained local in most cases but whose echo reflected the amazing creativity of a generation. ASTROM, KRISTOFER Hard Times CD
Kristofer Âström returns to the northern blues with his new album Hard Times, the melancholic Scandinavian version of the Americana genre. For 20 years already Aström embodies the popular Nordic songwriter from Sweden. Following three full band albums (Go, Went, Gone 1998, Leaving Songs and Northern Blues 2001) he began a phase when he concentrated on acoustic solo recordings, as showcased on his EP trilogy from 2003-2006 (Black Valley, Dead End, and There For). Hard Times now is the tenth studio album by the artist and it's a return to his roots. By the way, the album title had already been chosen before the Covid-19 disaster hit the world. It's inspired by a country song by Stephen Foster, "Hard Times Come Again No More". Âström: "Though the music on Hard Times is not country, it certainly has the feeling of it."

ENGELHARDT, TIM Idiosynkrasia 2LP
German techno and house composer Tim Engelhardt takes you on a deep dive into his peculiar-yet-relatable world of musical meanderings with Idiosynkrasia. True to the nature of idiosyncrasy, the album is more than the sum of its parts. Idiosynkrasia is an ode to the inspiration Tim finds in all kinds of spaces and places: each cut woven from the same cloth of meticulously formed melodic structures and expertly crafted harmonies, gently amplified and unfettered by genre. From the opening track it's clear that Tim has a profound awareness of rhythm and sound, his background as a pianist lending an easy fluidity to the album as it expands and contracts to tell a story which is gentle, humble and reflective. Using granular processed recordings of piano, floating strings and other instruments to transmute emotions like love, nostalgia, vulnerability, and longing, the album shifts through meditative, flow-state inducing tracks, morphing into cuts designed for dancing it all out. Take it straight, mix it up or down: Idiosynkrasia is cinematic in form and orchestral in structure, each track is marked with Tim's unique sonic signature and careful attention to instrumentation. Inhale the spirited and lively flow; exhale and surrender into epiphanic moments: this is an album which will catalyze deep breaths, reflection and a different way of thinking. Features Hannah Noelle. Double-LP with 16-track download.

LASWELL, BILL City of Light LP
2020 repress, still on "Indian" green vinyl. First time ever on vinyl, re-released in our Sub Rosa Blackcore series. City of Light is the sixth solo album by American composer Bill Laswell, released on July 29, 1997. While it may appear an anachronism in his catalog, fans of Bill Laswell will find City of Light an extension of ideas he has explored throughout his career. His strong interest in Eastern music and religion resulted in this 1997 collaboration with Janet Rienstra. Part sacred, spoken word, part meditative soundscape, City of Light takes as its inspiration the holy region of Banaras, India. Said to belong to Shiva, Banaras also contains the Ganges river: a place sought by Hindus for their cremation. Surrounding the texts is some of the most compelling music this genre has produced, featuring Trilok Gurtu on tablas, Coil (Peter Christopherson and John Balance) on electronics, Tetsu Inoue on sound collages, and Lori Carson on vocals. City of Light was recorded in Banaras, India, and mixed in Greenpoint, New York. It is about Banaras, a city older than history, tradition, and legends. It is Shiva's land, founded at the dawn of creation, and it is India's oldest and most fabled city. The Hindus call it Kashi, the luminous, the City of Light. Features a historical introduction by Hakim Bay.

MINGUS, CHARLES The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady LP
2020 repress. "Bassist/composer Charles Mingus is one of the most radical figures in American music. Throughout the '50s, he worked as a sideman with legendary players Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and more. In the '60s, he gained recognition as a bandleader, often followed by controversy for making strong-minded statements in the press about race, politics and stodgy music critics. While Mingus received many honors posthumously as well as during his career, perhaps his greatest achievement was transcending the restrictive label of jazz. The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady is without question Mingus's magnum opus. Originally released on Impulse! in 1963, the album broke new ground in both genre-defying composition and innovative recording techniques. A six-part suite with dramatic shifts in mood and tempo, The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady features the three-way brass dialog of trumpets, trombone, and tuba; swooping reeds; and awe-inspiring rhythm section. Balancing delicate Spanish modes and Ellingtonian themes, the ensemble breaks into a divine cacophony of group improvisation on par with free jazz giants like Ornette Coleman or Cecil Taylor. In his best-known essay, 'Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung,' Lester Bangs praises, 'the experience of the first few listenings to a record so total, so mind-twisting, that you authentically can say you'll never be quite the same again. Black Saint and The Sinner Lady did that, and a very few others. They're events you remember all your life, like your first real orgasm.' FRUSCIANTE, JOHN Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt 2LP
2020 repress. "Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt is the first solo record by John Frusciante. Between 1990 and 1992 the guitarist made a series of 4-track recordings, which at the time were not intended for commercial release. After leaving the band Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1992, Frusciante was encouraged by friends to release the material that he wrote in his spare time during the Blood Sugar Sex Magik sessions. Originally released on Rick Rubin's American Recordings label in 1994, Niandra LaDes is a mystifying work of tortured beauty. Frusciante plays various acoustic and electric guitars, experimenting with layers of vocals, piano and reverse tape effects. Channeling the ghosts of Syd Barrett and Skip Spence, his lyrics are at once utterly personal and willfully opaque. Frusciante's rapidfire, angular playing shows how key he was in the Chili Peppers' evolution away from their funk-rock roots. His cover of 'Big Takeover' perfectly deconstructs the Bad Brains original with laid-back tempo, twelve-string guitar and a fierce handle on melody. The album's second part -- thirteen untitled tracks that Frusciante defines as one complete piece, 'Usually Just A T-Shirt' -- contains several instrumentals featuring his signature guitar style. Sparse phrasing, delicate counterpoint and ethereal textures recall Neu/Harmonia's Michael Rother or The Durutti Column's Vini Reilly. On the front cover, Frusciante appears in 1920s drag -- a nod to Marcel Duchamp's alter-ego Rrose Sélavy -- which comes from Toni Oswald's film Desert in the Shape. This first-time vinyl release has been carefully remastered and approved by the artist. The double LP set is packaged with old style tip-on gatefold jacket and printed inner sleeves."

EX, THE Disturbing Domestic Peace LP + 7"
"Emerging out of Amsterdam's vibrant squat scene in 1979, The Ex -- a name chosen for the ease and speed with which it could be spray-painted onto a wall -- have for four decades been an entirely self-sustaining musical entity, charting a course through the global underground with a spirit of freedom and radical exploration. Disturbing Domestic Peace, The Ex's debut album, appeared mere months after their first single, 1980's 'All Corpses Smell The Same'. Originally released on the band's own Verrecords (they made up different label names with each record), the LP falls squarely within a punk idiom and, at the same time, shows this influential Dutch group's restless energy. Terrie Ex's guitar serves up vectors of percussive pulse, fraying the edges of the music's squared-off rhythms. Vocalist G.W. Sok -- an anarchist Dziga Vertov with a mic -- observes, declaims and condemns across a set of interrelated political concerns that would return in Exmusic for years to come. While The Ex channel the poise and principled attack of Crass or Flux Of Pink Indians, they create a unique declamatory sound all their own -- trailing brilliant flashes of color in the wake of punk's monochrome palette. Offering ten songs in only twenty-two minutes, Disturbing Domestic Peace lays bare a vivid snapshot of a truly singular band who (at the time) were just finding their feet. This first-time vinyl reissue comes with bonus 7-inch, insert and 20-page booklet."

Originally released in 1982, History Is What's Happening features one of the most harrowing title/cover art combinations in recent memory. On their second album, The Ex advance into a distinctly more post-punk style: textural guitar shards and tumbling motorik drumming with Bas Masbeck's thunderous bass shouldering much of the melodic load. Railing against political duplicity and the illusory nature of 'freedom' in an age of manufactured consent, G.W. Sok offers some of punk's most bracing and memorable agitprop lyrics. These twenty songs are a quick-moving and caustic trip, a DIY studio rendition of the band's explosive live set from this era. History Is What's Happening remains an important signpost in the history of both Ex-evolution and the cataclysmic '80s. With their sophomore LP, the group would put Holland on the underground music map. Indeed, many now-lifelong fans around the world were just beginning to take notice and get down with the mighty Ex. This first-time vinyl reissue comes with 23" x 16" poster and 24-page booklet."

TAPSCOTT, HORACE Songs Of The Unsung LP
Survival Research present a reissue of Horace Tapscott's Songs Of The Unsung, originally released in 1978. Distinguished Los Angeles-based jazz pianist Horace Tapscott is probably best-known as the founder of the Pan-Afrikan People's Orchestra of PAPA, also known as The Ark, though he began his career as a trombonist, working with Lionel Hampton and others during the late 1950s. The 1978 solo album, Songs Of The Unsung, released in small number on pianist Toshiya Taenaka's Interplay label, features Tapscott alone on piano, delivering a superb set of freely interpreted jazz tunes, including an unfettered reading of Lester Robertson's "In Times Like These" and Cal Massey's "Bakai," along with two of his own heartfelt originals. PUENTE, TITO El Rey Del Timbale LP
Survival Research present a reissue of Tito Puente's El Rey Del Timbale (Puente In Percussion), originally released in 1956. Percussive titan Tito Puente brought various forms of Latin rhythm into the consciousness of mainstream America and western Europe through a career that lasted over half a century, introducing enthralling Latin styles to the broader public from the early 1950s. His 1956 masterpiece El Rey Del Timbale features an all-star line-up consisting of Mongo Santamaria, Wilie Bobo, Cuban-born congero Carlos "Patato" Valdes (who had already recorded with Kenny Dorham for Blue Note and who was soon to record with Art Blakey), and Miami-born acoustic bassist Bobby Rodriguez (who had played with Dizzy Gillespie and Noro Morales), and Tito himself. The end result was simply astounding, a powerhouse of percussive jams delivered Latin style. It would spawn several copycat successors, including Puente's own Top Percussion (1958), but nothing really tops the invigorating, spontaneous feeling captured on "Puente In Percussion". A dramatic, action-packed set from start to finish, the beauty of the collaboration is ably reflected on "The Big Four" and "Congo Beat"; "Tito And Mongo On Timbales" is a percussive duel and "Swinging The Mambo" betrays the influence of jazz on the percussive styles. Puente In Percussion was so ahead of its time that it has enjoyed repeated demand throughout the decades, reaching back into circulation in the 1960, '70s, '90s and into the new millennium. Puente went on to pioneer all kinds of other incredible innovations in Latin jazz and other genres, yet Puente In Percussion is reminiscent of the primeval percussive core at the heart of his work. Crank it up and let the rhythms work their magic.

BADGE EPOQUE ENSEMBLE Badge Epoque Ensemble LP
"Back for a limited second pressing of 300, Badge Époque Ensemble's 2019 ST LP sold out immediately and has since started to fetch upwards of $70 a copy on Discogs. Flute, congas, bass, drums, guitar and clavinet; this unconventional arrangement of instruments intertwine to form the debut album by Badge Époque Ensemble -- a group of creative improvisers assembled to perform new, largely instrumental compositions by Maximilian 'Twig' Turnbull (formerly Slim Twig -- DFA Records). Badge employs an eclectic cast of characters from the Toronto underground music scene, whose combined experience would take pages to spell out. It includes stints accompanying songwriters Andy Shauf and Marker Starling, outfitting heavies Blood Ceremony and Biblical, and respective careers spent gigging Django-jazz and the classical cannon. Badge's distinctive sound arises from the diversity of these musical exploits, creating a palpable chemistry well captured on the live-tracked songs that form the group's self-titled debut. Part of this crucial chemistry can be attributed to the fact that four of the six players in the Ensemble have been at the core of the live, U.S. Girls band, a group that has scorched stages internationally over the past year and was hailed by Paste magazine as the best live band of 2018. While it may call to mind an improbable collision between psych-era Stevie Wonder and the whimsically dark, Fantastic Planet score, it is clear we are operating in a post Wu-Tang paradigm. If a crate of library, Tropicalia, prog and electric jazz records were flattened into a single 12" and then fed into a sampler, we might approximate the process."

BADGE EPOQUE ENSEMBLE Self Help LP
"Toronto's Badge Époque Ensemble announce sophomore album Self Help out November 20th on Telephone Explosion Records. Recorded live in the months before lockdown, Self Help is an exploratory record that dances across time and genre, guided by fidgety miniatures and jazz inflected collage. While constructed from the inspiration of soul, funk and film music, BÉE mediate those influences having first digested them through the productions of Madlib & the RZA. Throughout, the band pool together their instrumental chops, moving from fluid and serpentine R&B to meditative, minimalistic piano, evoking a contrast of virtuosity and self-surrender. A sticker on the sleeve tells us Self Help 'combines jazz-funk and mysticism,' a signpost to where its musical and spiritual concerns align. The jazz-funk component translates to arresting hooks in sideways song forms: echoes of Gainsbourg spooled through Azymuth-style Brazilian jazz and punctuated by the whip and snap of Steely Dan. 'The Sound Where My Head Was,' the instrumental centrepiece, exemplifies present-wave jazz but also ancient sounds, giving off the mothballed air of a Hiroshi Yoshimura record in a library-music archive. Self Help's mysticism emerges in broad and specific ways, denoting not only a search beyond cliché and intellect but also an inquiry into the beat, the spirit, the one will. This isn't new territory for them: Turnbull -- the artist formerly known as Slim Twig, who writes and performs with U.S. Girls and various other Toronto concerns -- named the group's Nature, Man & Woman EP after the Alan Watts book. Building these songs from his drafts over three weekends at Toronto's Palace Sound studio, the ensemble was free to tap out of the city and into some other place, taking up residence in a collective mind maze. The album produces, in equal measure, familiar surprises and the surprisingly familiar. Intoxicated jazz riffs swerve left at phantom intersections. Rhythms cut loose and tie you in knots. But wired in to each song is a sense of gentle accumulation, making every featherlight flourish weigh a ton. U.S. Girls' Meg Remy brings serenity to 'Sing a Silent Gospel,' and wears its antic melodies lightly. The soul shimmer of 'Unity (It's Up to You)' lets the players pool their R&B chops into something fluid and serpentine while, on guest vocals, the musical performance artist James Baley issues urgent declaratives: 'Water must pool, as a rule, before tasted/Or else the water is wasted.' The words throughout the record complement the ensemble music while riffing on the precarious nature of unity itself. Then, closer 'Extinct Commune' finds Turnbull deserted at the piano, playing phrases of meditative minimalism taking after the composer Joanna Brouk. For all the record's reach, it is these contrasting quiet moments that bring Self Help's communal spirit into focus. A note on personnel: Badge Époque Ensemble now has a seventh member in Karen Ng, the saxophonist and sometime collaborator of Do Make Say Think, Feist, and others. In BÉE, Ng joins Chris Bezant and Giosuè Rosati, her bandmates in the Andy Shauf live band, as well as U.S. Girls co-conspirators Turnbull and Ed Squires, and other Torontonian cross-pollinators listed below. Guest vocalists across Self Help include Meg Remy, who sings with Dorothea Paas on the opener, James Baley, and Toronto singer-songwriter Jennifer Castle on the remarkable 'Just Space for Light.'" --Jazz Monroe

VA Tokyo Dreaming 2CD
Tokyo Dreaming is a superb selection picked from the highly collectible Nippon Columbia label and its Better Days sub-label. Wewantsounds have teamed up with journalist and Japanese music expert Nick Luscombe. The selection mixes electro, synth-pop, funk, and ambient and includes many sought-after rarities and hidden gems which have never been released outside of Japan and the set has been newly remastered by Nippon Columbia. Nippon Columbia, one of Japan's oldest music labels is also one of its most collectible thanks to its sub-label Better Days which, in the late '70s, became a hotbed for Tokyo's new generation of pop artists eager to experiment with ambient, electro, and funk. Armed with a string of new Japanese-made synthesizers and drum machines that would soon take the world by storm, they made cutting-edge music, which has since become highly sought-after by a new generation of Japanese music lovers. Nick Luscombe, who has long been a leading advocate of Japanese music from this era, has handpicked a selection of some of the sharpest music released on these labels at the time. Tokyo Dreaming starts with "The End of Asia" by Ryuichi Sakamoto from his 1978 ground-breaking debut Thousand Knives Of... (WWSCD 024CD/WWSLP 024LP, 2019). The track became a staple of Sakamoto and Yellow Magic Orchestra's live shows and was even re-recorded by the group for their 1980 album X Multiplies. The track is followed by Mariah's cult Armenian folk flavored synth pop classic "Shinzo No Tobira" (1983). Chika Asamoto's "Self Control" (1988) and Jun Fukamachi's "Treasure Hunter" (1985) are perfect songs in the synth-pop canon, while Yumi Murata's rendition of Akiko Yano's "Watashi No Bus" and Hitomi "Penny" Tohyama's "Rainy Driver" both from 1981, move closer towards the slicker, funkier sound of city pop. Tokyo Dreaming superbly showcases the breadth of '80s Japanese music and the way electro pop was a playing ground for musicians to experiment with many styles, as showcased by Akira Sakata's dub-infused "Room" from 1980, Kazumi Watanabe's discoid "Tokyo Joe" (1980) and Juicy Fruits' techno pop song "Jenie Gets Angry". The selection flows effortlessly between many shades of synth and ends with two cult classics in the form of Yasuaki Shimizu's "Semi Tori No Hi" and Shigeo Sekito's ambient-jazz masterpiece "The Word II" from his highly sought-after album Kareinaru Electone (The Word) Vol.2 (1975). Tokyo Dreaming showcases the groundbreaking sounds of a city turned giant sonic lab which was restlessly inventing the music of the future. Album designed by famed London-based designer Optigram. Also features Yumi Seino, Kyoko Furuya, Kazue Itoh, Haruo Chikada & Vibra-Tones, and Colored Music.

BROOKS, BILLY Windows of the Mind CD
Wewantsounds reissue of Billy Brooks's much sought-after album Windows of the Mind, released in 1974 on Ray Charles's Crossover Records. The album was co-produced by Charles and features such heavy players as Herman Riley, Calvin Keys, and Larry Gales. There's not a huge amount of information to be found about trumpet player Billy Brooks. A solid session musician who'd been around since the '50s, he played with the likes of Lionel Hampton, Cal Tjader, and of course Ray Charles, who signed him to his sub label Crossover Records in the early '70s to release Windows of the Mind. Interestingly, Brooks also appears on Bea Benjamin's 1976 cult classic African Songbird produced by Dollard Brand. Windows of the Mind released in 1974 remains Brooks' only solo album. Windows of the Mind was recorded in Los Angeles and co-produced by Ray Charles. It is a skillful, brass-led mix of jazz and funk performed by such cult players as bassist Larry Gales (Thelonious Monk), drummer Clarence Johnston (Freddie Roach, James Moody), saxophonist Herman Riley (Side Effect, Pleasure, Earth Wind & Fire, Letta Mbulu), guitarists Jef Lee (Roy Ayers, Sylvia Striplin) and cult player Calvin Keys of Black Jazz Records fame. From the groove of "Rockin Julius", "Shetter Cheeze", and "Black Flag" to the mid-tempo jazz mood of "Cooling It" and "C.P. Time" and the cinematic brass pyrotechnics of "The Speech Maker", "Windows of the Mind" is a superb funked-up big band jazz album. Windows of the Mind did reasonably well among the jazz circles when it came out but its fate would change fifteen years later when, in 1990, A Tribe Called Quest heavily sampled its closing track "Fourty Days" for their own "Luck of Lucien" featured on the group's debut album People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm (1990). The album revolutionized hip-hop and "Luck of Lucien" became one of the album's highlights, thus cementing the reputation of Billy Brooks original LP among DJs and collectors. Original LPs now change hands for a few hundred dollars. Wewantsounds now make this landmark album available again in partnership with The Ray Charles Foundation. Newly remastered audio; comes with original artwork.

EL SHARIYI, OMAR Oriental Music LP
Wewantsounds present the first vinyl reissue of Ammar El Sherei's superb instrumental album Oriental Music from 1976. Here, the iconic Egyptian musician and composer revisits six classic compositions by another Egyptian legend, Mohamed Abdel Wahab, in his own hypnotic way. Curated by Lebanese-born Arabic music expert Mario Choueiry from Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. The late musician and composer Ammar El Sherei was one of Egypt's musical giants. Born in Upper Egypt in 1948 into an upper middle class family (his paternal grandfather had been an MP during King Fouad's reign and his eldest brother became the Egyptian ambassador to Australia) El Sherei moved to Cairo with his family when he was five and attended a special school for the blind (he had lost his eyesight in his early childhood). A child prodigy with a unique gift for music, he got noticed by his teachers who recommended him to the Hadley School for the Blind in America so he could perfect his studies by correspondence. El Sherei quickly learned piano, oud, and composition with unparalleled ease. He began playing accordion in the Cairo bars and clubs and started making a name for himself on the Cairo scene. El Sherei got his first taste of success when he managed to place a song with famed Egyptian singer, Maha Sabry. Following, his ascension was meteoric and he went to become a very successful composer for films and TV series especially. A true innovator who didn't hesitate to bring some western influences to traditional Egyptian music and was one of the musicians responsible for ending the lengthy song trend of the '70s. He embraced modern instrumentations and was asked by Japanese keyboard maker Yamaha Corp. to help develop new electronic keyboards that could handle quarter tone. Early in his career El Sherei recorded albums for Soutelphan, including Oriental Music celebrating the music of another Egyptian legend, composer Mohamed Abdel Wahab, who had co-founded Soutelphan. Here he masterfully interprets six classics from the master including "Ana Wehabieby" (aka Ana Wa Habibi), "Ya Wabour Koly", and the classic "Ahwak" made famous by such talents as Abdel Halim Hafez or Fairuz. Using early electronic keyboards like the Steelphon S900 or the Farfisa as seen on the album cover, El Sherei creates beautifully hypnotic instrumentals that blend together traditional melodies with modern instrumentation, adding jazz and pop elements in the mix. Newly remastered. Comes in original artwork.
