DE BABALON, CHRISTOPH Recurring Horrors CD
Christoph de Babalon has relished the two years since his last full-length outing for A Colourful Storm, crossing paths with a new guard of prodigies while maintaining ties with a legion of disciples. Aphex Twin, his old foe, even played "Realistic Riot Ritual Routine" at the now-infamous Warehouse Project set, smashing it to bits and pieces over "Polynomial-C". Recurring Horrors dives deep into de Babalon's DAT archive, dragging out ghosts while pressing the jaw-dropping, nine-minute breakcore epic, "No Man's Land". Unmissable smut.

NURSE WITH WOUND Rock 'n Roll Station 2LP
Repress forthcoming, expected Nov/2020. Abstrakce Recods present a reissue of Nurse With Wound's Rock 'n Roll Station, originally released in 1994. First time on vinyl since 2006 and first time with its original track listing. Limited one-off pressing with letter press cover and bonus track. Rock 'n Roll Station began life with Steven Stapleton asking engineer Colin Potter to remix some of the more rhythmic elements of "Colder Still" from 1992's Thunder Perfect Mind (SPHERES 020LP). As Potter gradually warped these sections into weirder and weirder pieces, a new album began to emerge. Potter himself explained it to David Keenan in England's Hidden Reverse (2003): "What I sometimes did in the studio was to 'over-use' effects and processors to totally mutate a piece into something completely different" while Stapleton observed how it was almost as though telepathic messages were sent over to Colin. [We'd] started an album [together at IC Studio] that was never finished. He [then] sent me some vague mixes, which were just what I had in mind. So, from that basis, I started putting the album together." Potter would quickly become a key player in Nurse With Wound's productions, a position he continues to fulfil to this day. He was first credited as a member on 1992's Thunder Perfect Mind, a tour-de-force of cold, at times hostile, machined atmospheres, but considers Rock 'n Roll Station from the following year to still be his favorite. Building on percussion and drone elements, Stapleton and Potter throw in a huge range of bizarre and atmospheric elements: didgeridoos, chanting voices, and their usual selection of unidentifiable sounds. Its strong focus on rhythm was erroneously surmised by some as an attempt to join the then rising electronic dance music scene. The album's title alluded to two specifically rock-related stations of influence: the song of the same name by Jac Berrocal, of which a surprisingly straight cover opens the album in homage; and the tragic life of the '60s British R&B organist Graham Bond who influenced bands such as Deep Purple and Cream. Beset by mental health problems (at one point believing he was the son of Aleister Crowley), Bond died under a train at a Tube station in 1989 and it is this tragic scene that Rock 'n Roll Station's closing track, "Finsbury Park, May 8th, 1:35 PM (I'll See You In Another World)", sets in sound.

SANDERS, PHAROAH Live at Antibes Jazz Festival in Juan-les-Pins July 21, 1968 LP
2020 restock. Pharoah Sanders, live at the Antibes Jazz Festival in Juan-les-Pins on July 21, 1968. Experimental jazz titan Pharoah Sanders made a lasting impact with his unorthodox approach to tenor saxophone. Born Farrell Sanders in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1940, he was given the nickname Pharoah by grandmother, in reference to the potential regal lineage of his African heritage. Playing clarinet at church services during his youth, he began playing tenor sax at high school. In 1959 he moved to Oakland, California, where he played with rhythm and blues bands and befriended John Coltrane. Moving to New York in 1961, he drifted into Sun Ra's Arkestra after experiencing a difficult period of homelessness. His status began to rise upon joining Coltrane's band in 1965, where his discordant solos formed a strong contrast to Trane's more melodious sound, though each player had a strong impact on the other's subsequent work. Following Coltrane's untimely death in 1967, Sanders formed a quartet of his own with former Jazz Messengers pianist Lonnie Liston Smith, bassist Norman "Sirone" Jones of the Untraditional Jazz Improvisational Team, and drummer Majeed Shabazz. For this blistering performance, given at the Antibes Jazz Festival of 1968 and broadcast on French radio station WDR3, the quartet moves through various Sanders free-jazz workouts, taking in "Venus" from the Tauhid album (1967) and "The Creator Has A Master Plan" from Karma (1969) along the way, with the rhythm section holding down the fort as Sanders blows himself into the stratosphere.

BAMBI OFS Yakka LP
Bambi OFS is Ce?dric Dambrain (1979), composer, electronic musician, and virtual instruments designer based in Brussels, Belgium. Dambrain's approach to music is motivated by an exploration of perception thresholds, psychoacoustics, and the physiological impact of sound. This diversity of themes is matched by his wide range of production styles, which include electroacoustic computer music, compositions for ensembles, noise, sound installations and, more recently, club-oriented polyrythmic explorations. Dambrain has also been composing extensively for performance artists and music theater. Spanning four tracks of intricate and ever-shifting rhythmic progressions, Bambi OFS's debut EP, Yakka, frames a tense and glittering ethno-fictional world, combining kaleidoscopic percussive textures with a precisely economical aesthetic. Extending on Ce?dric's exploration of sound.space.perception as a unified phenomenon in his sound installations and noise projects, the record artwork features a photography shot by ethnomusicologist Judith Becker during a Bebuten ceremony in Bali; the picture evokes her inquiry in the trance phenomenon, in which she demonstrates that our ability to enjoy trance and its healing virtues is inversely proportional to our sense of separateness from the rest of the world. Meshing together numerous influences, and reflecting on the self/other dichotomy, Yakka is a playful invitation to reconsider our identification processes.

BARE, BOBBY Bobby Bare Sings Shel Silverstein Plus 8CD BOX
"Among Silverstein's wry sagas about winners, losers, and lonely all-night cafés, you'll discover charming children's songs and touching, affectionate love ballads. A complicated man, that Silverstein. If most people associate the late Shel Silverstein with his children's literature, others remember his cartoons and graphic travelogues for Playboy. By contrast, relatively few recognize this Chicago native as a prolific songwriter, penning such hits as Johnny Cash's 'A Boy Named Sue', 'Dr. Hook' and the Medicine Show's 'The Cover Of Rolling Stone', Tompall Glaser's 'Another Log On The Fire', and Loretta Lynn's 'One's On The Waycorn'. No artist recorded more Silverstein songs than veteran country singer Bobby Bare. His 1972 cover of Silverstein's bittersweet Sylvia's Mother launched a professional relationship that led to an enduring friendship. Lullabys, Legends And Lies from 1974 remains an exercise in pure imagination, establishing Bare as a major album artist and yielded Marie Laveau, Bare's first chart-topping single. During the late '70s, Shel Silverstein shifted his creative focus to playwriting and children's books, but he continued crafting clever songs specifically for Bare. By the mid-'80s, Bobby Bare had recorded more than 100 Silverstein originals. Bobby Bare Sings Shel Silverstein Plus the first comprehensive collection of this material, is accompanied by a 128-page hardcover book, its eight CDs include 137 tracks, 25 of them previously unissued. Six albums appear complete, including integral songs by other writers. The long-unheard 'Great American Saturday Night' includes three songs missing from a recent independent label release. The box set contains an LP-sized, lavishly illustrated 128-page hardcover book that contains song lyrics and a discography. In a conversation with Hank Davis, Bare recalls his years working with Silverstein, and Dave Samuelson documents the songwriter's multiple creative pursuits."

VA Kraut! Teil 1: Die Innovativen Jahre des Krautrock 1968-1979 2CD
"Progressive Rock from Germany! Towards the end of the 1960s, German bands began their first attempts to emancipate themselves stylistically from their US and British role models. Prog rock and psychedelia from our country were initially smiled at internationally and disparagingly called 'Krautrock' by cult DJ John Peel, among others. Unorthodox formations could not be pigeonholed, and so a scene with a wide musical range was created. With the release of the first of a total of four issues, Bear Family marks another milestone on the way to a comprehensive documentation of the history of popular music in Germany from the early 1960s to the mid-1980s. Smash! Boom! Bang! covers the complete history of Beat music in Germany on a total of 30 individual CDs; the CD documentation Für wen wir singen -- Liedermacher in Deutschland, consisting of four triple-CDs, describes the singer/songwriter scene with 274 individual songs, supplemented by the 10 CD box set Die Burg Waldeck Festivals 1964-1969. And finally, Aus grauer Städte Mauern - Die Neue Deutsche Welle 1997-1985, Bear Family's four-part double-CD series with popular and weird sound examples and a total of about 600(!) pages of accompanying text. With Teil 1 Kraut! Die Innovativen Jahre des Krautrock 1968-1979 we will release a double-CD every three months in 2020 with a booklet of about 100 pages and biographies of each band, an exquisite selection of the exciting and influential bands of those days, some of which caused a sensation far beyond Germany." PURE HELL Noise Addiction LP
2020 restock. Beat Generation presents a reissue of Pure Hell sole full-length album, recorded in 1978 but not released until 2006. In 1974, on the streets of Philadelphia, a band unlike any other was formed. They called themselves Pretty Poison. They had a sound so ahead of its time that the music industry was not yet ready for it. They coupled the punk sound of the New York bands of the time with a harder, faster heavy metal edge unheard before. Their unique sound was a result of Kenny Gordon's berserk choreography and Preston Morris's needling guitar riffs, while Steel and Spider added synchronized barrage with no nonsense execution to the arsenal. Inspired by the famous fuel-altered dragster, they changed their name to Pure Hell in 1975. Soon after, they moved to New York City where they played with bands like the New York Dolls, Sid Vicious, Wayne County and the Electric Chairs, The Dead Boys, The Stimulators, Richard Hell, The Germs, The Nuns, The Cramps and more. In 1978 Pure Hell headlined a tour of the UK, with bands like the UK Subs, Wilko Johnson, Vermilion & the Aces and more opening for them. While in the UK, their only original record was released. It was a single released by their manager Curtis Knight on his label, Golden Sphinx Records. The songs on the single were "These Boots Were Made for Walking" and "No Rules." The single charted in the top 40 charts in the UK. During the same year, a full length album was recorded but was never released. It did not surface again for 28 years.

KOJUCHAROV, VASCO VASSIL Django Il Bastardo CD
Directed by Sergio Garrone, Django Il Bastardo (1969) is considered by critics to be one of his best films. Here is one of the most iconic Spaghetti Western characters, Django, in one of his final movies, this time played by Anthony Steffen. It's not the first time Vasco Vassil Kojucharov (a maestro very dear to the Beat Records publishing group) scored this character. Thanks to the Nomus association, archivist of the Kojucharov fund, the label retrieved four master tapes and many documents from the recording session for this soundtrack, which -- coming as no surprise, being a representative example of its genre -- reveals all of the musical skills of the maestro. His immensely creative vein is evident from the main titles, which -- performed with typical instrumentation for Italian Western movies -- winks an eye to the spy genre. A wonderful unreleased score, finally available for your listening pleasure. Mastering by Enrico De Gemini. Graphic design by Daniele De Gemini. Liner notes by Alessandro Bratus (English-language translation edited by Josh Mitchell). Jewel case; 12-pages booklet.

TELAIO MAGNETICO Live 75 (Expanded Version) CD
Black Sweat Records presents a reissue with unreleased tracks of Telaio Magnetico's Live 75, taken from the only tour of this super group in 1975. The band was composed of Franco Battiato, Lino Capra Vaccina, Juri Camisasca, Mino Di Martino, Roberto Mazza, and Terra Di Benedetto. In the mid 1970s the Italian underground scene seemed to mature towards an existential priority of yearning for a new psychological universe, with the firm idea to colonize the uncharted space of a necessary and infinite path of spiritual redemption. In this context, the short experience of Telaio Magnetico was born from the confluence of Battiato's experimental efforts in works such as Sulle Corde di Aries (1973), Clic (1974) and M.Elle The Gladiator (1975) and the Albergo Intergalattico Spaziale's new esoteric electronics. A mosaic of metamorphic sounds and frequencies of unfamiliar constellations, the music of Telaio is an imaginary triptych of "energy-cosmos-mind". Synths and Lowry organs draw labyrinths and landscapes to infinity alongside a harmonic percussion arsenal. Whispering and radical improvised vocals are lost as delusional fugues in centrifugal vortices and at the same time seem to offer a compendium of religious chants which evoke Tibetan choruses, Indian pujas, or the Gregorian tradition. Sufi cadences and relaxations or pastoral-tribal elements re-emerge sometimes into a chamber carpeted with oboe sonorities evoking Arabic, Egyptian, or Moroccan pifferos. That which is traced is not only a galactic river but also a Mediterranean circumnavigation: a unique creative moment that in addition to the references to German kosmische musik and British space-rock seemed to be perfumed by the influence of Gurdjieffian mysticism and roots also in the minimalist drone of Terry Riley and La Monte Young as well as parallels with the contemporary research of authors such as Alvin Curran and the explorations of Futuro Antico.

DREYBLATT, ARNOLD Star Trap LP
Limited restock. Star Trap presents a selection of hitherto unreleased 1990s recordings from Arnold Dreyblatt and his Orchestra of Excited Strings. Following on from Black Truffle's wide-ranging archival Second Selection (2015), which presented a smorgasbord of unreleased material from between 1978 and 1989, Star Trap mines Dreyblatt's extensive archive of unheard recordings from the 1990s, uncovering six pieces performed by three different iterations of the Orchestra of Excited Strings. While Dreyblatt often performs in his ensembles on his signature Excited Strings Bass (a double bass strung with piano wire), here we find him in the composer's chair and behind the mixing desk, leading ensembles of modified percussion, string, and wind instruments. Four of the pieces make use of Dreyblatt's Dynamic Processing System (heard on a stunning pair of solo pieces for electric guitar featured on Second Selection), in which the opening and closing of digital noise gates are controlled by an external signal (in this case, a recording of faulty escalator). Rather than the relentless thudding rhythms of 1980s works like Nodal Excitations, the ensemble pieces here are closer to the propulsive, at times even funky rhythmic foundation of Dreyblatt's classic Animal Magnetism (Tzadik, 1995), but further enlivened by the unpredictable accents of the Dynamic Processing System. On "Escalator", a six-piece version of the Orchestra performs the notated stuttering rhythms and shifting accents of the gated escalator recordings, without the actual Dynamic Processing System being audible. On the remaining two pieces, composed for the tenth anniversary of the Orchestra of Excited Strings in Europe, Dreyblatt made use of algorithmic software to generate material. But far from austere exercises, these pieces are perhaps the most immediate of all, as the Orchestra exuberantly tears through a sequence of repeating rhythmic and melodic cells, dazzling the ear with the overtones generated by Dreyblatt's twenty-note microtonal scale. At times recalling aspects of the work of Peter Zummo or Arthur Russell's Instrumentals, but with a massive dose of sonic heft, this is music for both the mind and the body. Mastered and cut by Kassian Troyer at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Design by Lasse Marhaug. Includes liner notes by Arnold Dreyblatt.

HAMANN, JUDITH Shaking Studies LP
Nomadic Australian cellist and composer Judith Hamann presents two collections of her sonic inquiries into shaking and humming. Her LP, Shaking Studies, is a collection of iterative cello performance that foregrounds shaking as a generative subject. In addition to an arsenal of techniques for registrable shaking, Hamann's conception of the term emphasizes micro and macro pulsing, including tremors, vibrato, wolf tones, and complex partial activity. Hamann begins with a sphygmological reading of the pulse of her cello, inciting it to shake audibly and visually as a symbiotic basis for determining the rate of her own left hand's tremor and consequent direction of resonant frequencies. Following a thorough harmonic investigation of her shaking practice in two parts, she directs us to look outwards, combining beating chordal structures with electronics and recordings of real world shaking. From inner pulse to more macrocosmic quaking, Hamann's alternative conception of shaking rejects measurement and regularity, order and control, instead alluding to a more responsive and intuitive mode of convulsive sounding. It's presented alongside the CD set, Music for Cello and Humming (BF 018CD). Judith Hamann undertook her doctoral studies with renowned cellist Charles Curtis, with whom she is currently engaged in a discourse-based project, "Materialities of Realisation." She has additionally demonstrated a superlative capacity for improvisation and engagement with sonic arts through work with artists Dennis Cooper, Éliane Radigue, Áine O'Dwyer, Ilan Volkov, Toshimaru Nakamura, La Monte Young, and Marian Zazeela, Golden Fur, Jessika Kenney, Anna Homler, Yvette Janine Jackson, and Lori Goldston, among others. Her recorded appearances include Tashi Wada's Duets, Graham Lambkin's Community, Alvin Lucier's Illuminated By The Moon, and Gossamers, with Rosalind Hall. Edition of 500.

EZRAT Carousel LP
Written following a bout of heavy touring and breakup of his previous band, and amidst the degradation of multiple relationships, the songs that make up Carousel were culled from an obsessive trove of singer-songwriter Ezra Tenenbaum's dozens over reel to reel demo recordings. Sounds oscillate from jangly meditations ("Turn the Time"), drum machine fueled heart pangs ("Picture Taker"), and the ethereal ruminations of a shut in ("Loud Sounds"). After tracking live at Brooklyn's Figure 8 Studios, guitarist Ezra Tenenbaum and drummer Michael Stasiak fleshed-out, knotty, hook-filled arrangements at home with the help of a rotating crew of friends, including Kyle Forester (Woods, Purple Mountains), John Andrews (Hand Habits, Cut Worms), Michael Hesslein (Mail the Horse), and others. Ezrat is a simple twist of the lemon for followers of Ezra Tenenbaum's previous band, EZTV, who released two hook filled LPs on Captured Tracks and toured with the likes of Real Estate, Ultimate Painting, Jenny Lewis, and others. Listeners can expect the same deliciously deployed power-pop hooks that recall British invaders or left of the dial new wave. New players are in the mix, plus some old faces, playing pop-inflected rock music that operates as both a mirror to our past and a strum-happy tunnel to the future.

MILKY WIMPSHAKE Confessions Of An English Marxist LP
Milky Wimpshake are a lo-fi indie punk threesome from Newcastle consisting of Emma Wigham (drums), Christine Rowe (bass), and front man Pete Dale (vocals, guitar, songwriting), whose scene credits include running the Slampt label; FAST Connection fanzine, and the bands Avocado Baby, Pussycat Trash, Chronicity, and Red Monkey. Milky Wimpshake began their under-the-radar run in the early '90s to investigate daydreamy sentiments and DIY takes on sociopolitical protest songs. Working at an extremely relaxed pace, Milky Wimpshake's discography exists in piecemeal compilation appearances, long out-of-print 7" singles, and a scant seven albums stretched out over the course of more than 25 years. Confessions Of An English Marxist is one of their best albums to date, these are songs that say more about today's world than most of the written media. Fuck art, let's danse! Referred to by some as punk folk and twee skiffle, they're considered witty, satirical, and both irritating and utterly enjoyable, Newcastle Upon Tyne based cult indie-pop heroes Milky Wimpshake have released numerous singles and compilation tracks on assorted indie labels since forming in 1993."A slow birth! At least one song on this album was written when 'Dave' Cameron (remember him?) was prime minister, hence a nod to bestiality on one track. Oh yeah, and then bloody Brexit happened, blimey, that didn't escape anyone's attention did it? And now this album finalised at a time of global pandemic, ha! This predicament meant that a working title of 'The Wimps are Alright' had to be abandoned (possibly to be revived later). There's a few confessions on this album, but not enough confessions of guilt perhaps -- I'll get there." --Pete Dale about Confessions Of An English Marxist.

CLUSTER Grosses Wasser LP
2020 restock; LP version. Formed in Germany in 1971 when Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius left Conrad Schnitzler's group Kluster, Cluster can be counted among the most important protagonists of the electronic avant-garde. Some credit them with having invented ambient music, others as pioneers of synthesizer pop, while to others they are firmly embedded in the Krautrock universe. There is some truth in all of these notions. Although Cluster and "rock music" are seldom mentioned in the same breath, their early works in particular are marked by a lack of structure and futuristic, cold soundscapes typical of the Krautrock variation known as "kosmische." Recorded and released in 1979, Grosses Wasser was Cluster's fifth album as a duo. The cover art is the first indication of minimalist tendencies, reflecting the concentration, transparency and maturity of the content, almost like chamber music. While nothing is left to chance, each of the six Cluster pieces effervesces with a certain joie de vivre, providing ample scope for artistic spontaneity. Grosses Wasser was recorded at Paragon Studio, which had been set up by Peter Baumann (Tangerine Dream) not long before. Baumann had set aside plenty of time for the recording sessions, enabling Cluster to experiment with sequencers for the first time and explore some of the most up-to-date (for that period) studio gadgets on offer. Moebius and Roedelius made intelligent, measured use of the latest paraphernalia without being overwhelmed by it. New technology was deployed with an exactness designed to refine their sophisticated and fully-developed musical ideas. More than ever before in Cluster's history, acoustic elements can be heard, with the dulcet tones of Paragon's Steinway grand piano taking center stage. Electric bass, guitar, percussion and voice are all embraced. Consequently, Grosses Wasser is anything but a solely electronic album. It is, however, one of those rare LPs whose musical substance transcends its age, never sounding outdated. Grosses Wasser is the first in a series of 23 albums to be reissued by Bureau B, comprehensively documenting the superb electronic/ambient/Krautrock history of the Hamburg label, Sky Records, from whom the material has been licensed. Cluster (in their various guises) will feature heavily in the series (solo albums as well as collaborations with Brian Eno, Conny Plank, Gerd Beerbohm, Mani Neumeier, etc.). CLUSTER Curiosum LP
2020 restock. LP version with color inner sleeve and liner notes by Asmus Tietchens. Originally released on Sky Records in 1981, Bureau B reissues Cluster's Curiosum -- the sixth duo collaboration between Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Curiosum was to mark a departure to pastures new. Little did they know that this would be their last release for the next nine years. Curiosum was launched into an atmosphere of musical turbulence. Electronic sounds had become commonplace in pop music and the voice of Cluster could barely be heard through the noise of a new generation of music. Curiosum is a decidedly tranquil, almost melancholy album -- quiet being the operative word, as Cluster slipped out of the limelight. It was recorded in rudimentary fashion in Austria, now home to Roedelius. This is Cluster music at its most serene, a sense of profound humility running through the seven tracks of the LP. It says a lot about the state of mind of the two musicians, allied to the fact that this was the first time they chose to mix outside of Conny Plank's studio where, in the past, the finishing touches had been applied. Roedelius and Moebius laid their cards on the table for all to see, offering up Curiosum as an honest, unadorned selection of tracks, free of artifice and preconception. The album represented a return to the virtues of their early work (when Cluster was written with a "K"), random and spontaneous. Curiosum is nothing if not a curiosity, wholly resistant to the cacophonous zeitgeist of the early '80s, stripped down and keenly focused on perfect shapes. This is Cluster's swan-song to the past.

2020 repress. 180 gram LP version. This is the fourth solo album by German keyboardist Hans-Joachim Roedelius, originally released in 1980 on Sky Records. With Selbstportrait, Roedelius gave unequivocal confirmation that he no longer was treading the hitherto common paths of electronic music. Selbstportrait - Vol. II corroborated the findings: for Roedelius, electronics would no longer be a means of creating abstract, noise-like music in the future, nor of generating utopian, mechanical rhythmic structures. His own utopia was quite a different place, more in keeping with his own personality and view of the world. Hence both self-portraits, in particular Selbstportrait - Vol. II, are programmatic. Uniquely among musicians of the German electronic scene at the time, Roedelius succeeded in blending European and extra-European musical styles quite intuitively, developing his own language of music, neither epigonic nor weighed down by stereotype, as often occurred in the emerging world music genre of the period. There is a fascinating simplicity to the music of Roedelius: his vision does not reside in cloud-cuckoo-land. His utopia is founded in reason, his vision sustained by a simple base: not only did he ignore musical traditions, he also sought to create something new out of them. He succeeded where many of his contemporaries failed, going to ground as they attempted to bridge the postmodern gap. Not Roedelius. Roedelius' music is littered with stumbling blocks. The listener may not necessarily lose his footing, but will not exactly find himself sitting comfortably as he listens. With this album, Roedelius has drawn a clearly delineated picture of himself. Few musicians can say the same, few even harbor such aspirations. Transcending styles, hypes and modernisms, Selbstportrait - Vol. II is electronically-sourced music, yet sounds anything but technical, dismantling the misconception that electronic music has to sound cold and distant. Selbstportrait - Vol. II has never been released completely before. Printed innersleeve with original liner notes and new notes by Asmus Tietchens.

SCHNITZLER, CONRAD Auf Dem Schwarzen Kanal 12"
2020 repress. Auf Dem Schwarzen Kanal is one of the most outstanding, most sought-after releases in Conrad Schnitzler's extensive catalog. It was the only Schnitzler record to appear on a major label and saw him flirting with the experimental new wave sound that was emerging in 1980, particularly on the title track. Nevertheless, it still managed to sound idiosyncratically unlike any other music around at the time. Recorded with Wolfgang Seidel at Peter Baumann's Paragon Studio in Berlin, the four tracks take us on a caustic, dissonant mutant disco trip which has lost none of its fascination in the years since. It gives us at Bureau B great pleasure to reissue this long lost work.

NEUZEITLICHE BODENBELAGE Der Grosse Preis CD
Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge is the musical vehicle of Niklas Wandt and Joshua Gottmanns. They released a single -- "Ich verliebe mich nie" -- in 2018 and an EP entitled Leben in 2019 on the Düsseldorf label, Themes For Great Cities. Now the time has come for the Berlin duo's long-awaited debut album. The seven tracks comprising Der Große Preis distill the inimitable NB sound which blends velvety synth-pop and crystalline digi-dub, basslines like cubes of glass and whiplash snares. The album title certainly lives up to its name: The Grand Prize. It was early 2019 when, led by their very own energy coach Ali Europa, the band ensconced themselves in an offseason hotel on Lake Constance to record the album, the same procedure that spawned their afore-mentioned EP. Between a mothballed breakfast buffet and darkened wood furnishings, bright winter sunshine and lonely nights, Wandt and Gottmanns set about conjuring up smoke clouds. The two protagonists have always been drawn to the most contradictory scenes of local nightlife, indeed the project was born in the underground bars of Berlin. On their lakeside sojourn, they paid a quotidianal visit to the neighborhood watering hole, where a "No Problems" playlist -- parts 1 to 5 -- blared out of the jukebox and semi-anonymous players lost themselves in a blur of numbers and fruit as the slot machines whirred and flashed at one end of the room. Many a Euro coin was lost here, but a valuable concentrate seeped through the ether which would allow new tracks to grow. The magic ultimately reached completion in the converted studio suite; a pile of analog synthesizers and rhythm machines, a Studer desk, computer, a vocal booth in the shower. Irregular working hours, and paradoxical daily routines caused considerable friction and, at times, the two musicians worked separately from each other. One eventful year later, the finishing touches were applied in Vienna 1070, or to be more accurate, in Sam Irl's home studio and the International Major Label Studio just around the corner: "Gelb's Groove" emerged from smoke-laden nothingness in February 2020. The end product was honed with overdubs, refinements and vocals. Finally, the title track, "Der Große Preis", based on supercharged lyrics that had been floating around for some time, was completed with Daniel Meuzard piloting his spaceship-like EMS synthesizer. A month later, cultural activities came to an end and Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge had their debut album in the bag, like one big promise.

DER PLAN Es Ist Eine Fremde Und Seltsame Welt CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Der Plan's Es Ist Eine Fremde Und Seltsame Welt, originally released in 1987. A cynic might propound the notion that to reissue an album entitled Es Ist Eine Fremde Und Seltsame Welt at this particular moment would be to hit the nail on the head with painful exactitude. No cynics here, however, only music lovers. Bureau B have already re-released four classic albums by Der Plan: Geri Reig (BB 104CD/LP), Normalette Surprise (BB 105CD/LP), Die letzte Rache (BB 129CD/LP), and Japlan (BB 130CD/LP).Moritz R: I made the cover. My idea was for everything in the photo to be black, we even used embossed type so the entire cover was black. (editor's note: no embossed type on the reissue due to the cost, but our album price is undeniably attractive).Pyrolator: The name of the album is simultaneously the concept. Numerous diverse pieces which illuminate the world in all its absurdity. The album title is lifted from the David Lynch movie Blue Velvet ("It's A Strange World"). The songs on the album were, for the most part, composed in a legendary session, improvisations really. We decided to play each piece in a different key and use irregular time signatures: for example, "Frisch Verliebt" is in 9/8, "Ein Moment Sind Zwei Sekunden" shifts between 6/8, 3/4 and 4/4, whilst "Ich Hab Den Jordan Gesehen" is in 6/8.Moritz R: Der Plan was often seen as a fun, colorful, NDW (Neue Deutsche Welle) band and we wanted to counter that image by bringing our obscure roots to the fore. What influences, musical or otherwise, shaped the production of EIEFUSW?Moritz R: I couldn't name any influences at all. The record was very much of our own making. Obscure in the best sense of the word. What were your expectations and how was the album ultimately received?Moritz R: No expectations. We were still a band of obscure outsiders. But we knew full well what we were getting into with our weird music. Listening habits have come a long way since then and I hope that people will better understand or appreciate the record today.

DER PLAN Die Peitsche des Lebens CD
The final instalment (for now) in Bureau B's little series of classic Der Plan album reissues. That's Frank, Kurt, and Moritz right there on the cover, inside Harry Rosenberg's Hamburger Hafen Basar* -- the Plan's own version of the Style Council's Favourite Shop. You may not find the cool mods attire that graced the Weller and Talbot emporium, but Harry's was a treasure trove of exotica: fetishes, amulets, masks, handicrafts from the South Seas, even shrunken heads. The kind of things seafarers brought back with them from distant voyages. It would cost you two Deutschmarks to see the miniature skulls of the unfortunates. Harry himself had a long, white bushy beard, proper sea dog material. The basis of the harbor bazar's collection can be traced back to the eccentric Cap'n Haase, self-proclaimed "professor of undiscovered science", who died in 1934. Not a bad title for the next Plan album or box: these Professors of Undiscovered Science have forever been on a musical mission to seek out and shine a light on undiscovered phenomena. It is no surprise that this perfectly chosen photograph reminiscent of a certain Dr Henry Walton Jones Jr. Moritz R, a keen collectors of artifacts from the Makonde province of Mozambique, was a frequent visitor to the bazar, whilst Pyrolator was particularly in awe of the Africa room: "Voodoo dolls hanging from the ceiling, needles sticking out of them, flecked with blood. Scary stuff. Bundles of seedy St.Pauli-Nachrichten papers and other porn magazines on the floor. When I asked Harry about this bizarre combination of wares, his answer was short and to the point: '... it banishes the spells.'" Why are there so many cigars on the table and what about the song El Cigarro? Moritz R looks back: "That's how we rolled in those days. You could put it down to juvenile obsession, smoking cigars, drinking whisky, snorting coke (not me!) --that's just how it was, partying hard." Eleven years had passed since the release of Geri Reig, their debut album. Tiki and electronica, noise and schlager, psychedelia and industrial, Kurt Martin and jerry-rigging, Cargo Cult and Ata Tak, Wuppertal and Düsseldorf, Hans-Albers-Platz and West-Berlin, Emulator I and Emulator II, old pizzas and new masks, making the most out of the least and living in the gallery, abstraction and pop, Japan and Japlan. A lot going on in those eleven years!

PABLO, AUGUSTUS King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown LP
2020 repress; reissue of the 1976 historic collaboration between producer instrumentalist Augustus Pablo and dub engineer King Tubby."If you had to pick one album that best represents the pinnacle of the art of dub, you'd cull the candidates down pretty quickly to ten or 12, and it would get very difficult after that. Few would fault you for ending up with this one, though, which stands as perhaps the finest collaboration between two of instrumental reggae's leading lights: producer and melodica player Augustus Pablo and legendary dub pioneer King Tubby. Among other gems, this album offers its title track -- a dub version of Jacob Miller's 'Baby I Love You So'-- which is widely regarded as the finest example of dub ever recorded. But the rest of the album is hardly less impressive. 'Each One Dub', another cut on a Jacob Miller rhythm, possesses the same dark and mystical ambience, if not quite the same emotional energy, as 'King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown,' and the version of the epochal 'Satta Massaganna' that closes the album is another solid winner. Pablo's trademark 'Far East' sound (characterized by minor keys and prominent melodica lines) is predominant throughout, and is treated with care and grace by King Tubby, who has rarely sounded more inspired in his studio manipulations than he does here. Absolutely essential." --Rick Anderson, All Music

2020 restock on black vinyl. Previously released on yellow vinyl for RSD 2012. When first released as a CD on Actress's Werk Discs imprint in 2008, Where Were U In 92? was instantly hailed as the rave album that was never made in the early '90s, a tumbling anthemic barrage of lost mixtape masterpieces from an artist who was starting to take the electronic dance scene by storm. However, Where Were U In 92? is not just some facsimile-style homage to the past; it takes a firm grip of the energy and sheer rushing dynamics of early hardcore breakbeat, and places those sounds and styles smack in the center of right now.

MOORE, THURSTON By The Fire 2LP
Double LP version. 180 gram, black vinyl. This is Thurston Moore's seventh solo album, and features musicians Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine) on bass and backing vocals, Jon Leidecker aka "Wobbly" (of Negativland) on electronics, James Sedwards on guitar, and Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley, as well as Jem Doulton, alternating on drums. "Hashish", the ?rst single from the album, is described by Moore as "an ode to the narcotic of love in our shared responsibility to each other during isolation." The song includes a video with footage from The Thurston Moore Group's tour in early 2020 in Europe, as well as footage of Thurston quarantined in his home during the past few months "with respect to the sacred healing truth of nature." Prior to isolation during the COVID pandemic, Thurston worked in recording studios in North London until the third week of March 2020 to complete this album for release on September 5, 2020. While the musicians may not immediately tour, Thurston was adamant to release By The Fire in 2020, and with Daydream Library, has released this quote: By The Fire is music in ?ames. 2020 is our time for radical change and collective awareness and Thurston Moore has written nine songs of enlightenment, released to a world on ?re. Taking a cue from Albert Ayler's "music is the healing force of the universe," this recording offers songs as ?ames of rainbow energy, where the power of love becomes our call. These are love songs in a time where creativity is our dignity, our demonstration against the forces of oppression. By The Fire is a gathering, a party of peace -- songs in the heat of the moment.

Delgado's masterpiece was probably the first successful case of a simple loop going nonstop through an entire arrangement, it was a clear inspiration for many to come. VA The Harry Smith B-Sides 4CD BOX/BOOK
Restocked; The Harry Smith B-Sides box set contains the flip side of every 78-rpm record that Harry Smith included on the Anthology of American Folk Music. In 1952, Folkways Records published the legendary six-LP series entitled the Anthology of American Folk Music, compiled by eccentric record collector, filmmaker, artist, and anthropologist Harry Smith. Many historians cite Smith's reissue, with its recordings of country, blues, and gospel music from the 1920s and '30s, and its booklet containing idiosyncratic liner notes, esoteric artwork, and handmade design as a major impetus for the folk music revival of the 1950s and '60s. 68 years later, The Harry Smith B-Sides offers both a resonant listening experience and the closing of a collector's circle. Sequenced in the identical order that Smith created, this new box set offers the flip-side of each record selected by Smith for the original Anthology of American Folk Music. Newly-remastered audio under license from Gennett Records, Paramount Records, Sony Music Entertainment, and Universal Music Group. This box set represents a mirror image of the Anthology of American Folk Music's tracklist. However, the producers have omitted the following tracks due to lyrics containing racist language: track 5 on disc 1, track 4 on disc 2, and track 16 on disc 4. Cigar box, full-color 144-page book featuring original artwork by Harry Smith and four CDs; 84 newly-remastered tracks on four CDs with a full-color 144-page book featuring archival images, original artwork by Harry Smith, and essays by John Cohen, Lance Ledbetter, and Eli Smith. Transcriptions and annotations for each track by more than 80 artists, writers, and musicians that have been inspired by Harry Smith's work including Daniel Bachman, Devendra Banhart, Sarah Bryan, Rosanne Cash, Dom Flemons, Steve Gunn, Will Oldham, Amanda Petrusich, Steve Roden, Art Rosenbaum, Nathan Salsburg, and Peter Stampfel.Features Dick Justice, Nelstone's Hawaiians, Clarence Ashley, Coley Jones, Buell Kazee, Chubby Parker & His Old-Time Banjo, Uncle Eck Dunford, Burnett and Rutherford, Buster Carter and Preston Young, Carolina Tar Heels, G.B. DAMAGE, BENJAMIN Algorithm 12"
Benjamin Damage reports back for a fresh slice of his singular strain of modern-day techno. "Alpha Centauri" institutes the record atmospherically, setting up the scenery of ethereal winds, prowling basses, and muscular drums. Picking up the pace, "Circle Machine" is a busy tune, rigidly rattling towards an array of tripped-out synths, yet captivating with their off-key harmonics. Heavier but equally distinctive, "Damage" opens the B-side with his skillful blend of assaulting, rough-edged machine sounds, and soothing, celestial ambiance. He then twists around again, cleverly seeing his listeners out with a surprisingly lively arrangement of sneaky synth squelches, making for a well-rounded as accomplished EP-package.

GRIM HUMOUR Highlights & Lowlights 1983-1987 Book
Grim Humour ran between 1983 and 1993 and proved itself one of the most popular UK fanzines throughout this time due to its documenting many groups, large and small, who initially arrived from the punk/post-punk world and its cousins in industrial or electronic music, whilst coupling this to an interest in horror films, underground cinema, literature, graphic novel/comics and more esoteric areas. Although the passions for matters beyond music grew as the 'zine itself grew, the early editions captured here in what is to be the first of two book volumes reflect the work of several teenage friends so devoted to the music they enjoyed they felt compelled to delve further into it. Naive, impassioned, and underpinned by a modicum of sarcasm that got cranked higher in later editions, Grim Humour perfectly balanced deference with irreverence when it came to music. Throughout the approximately 300 pages collected here, original pages are reprinted alongside re-edited interviews, reviews and other such features from the first ten editions of the 'zine, published between 1983 and 1987. Also featuring new text exclusive to the book by some of the groups, as well as a number of essays by those either involved with the 'zine or who avidly read it, this book serves as a (perhaps cracked) snapshot of a time when independent music didn't necessarily mean "indie". Comprising interviews with Killing Joke, Abbo (UK Decay), And Also The Trees, Crass, Virgin Prunes, Death In June, Portion Control, Nick Cave, Sonic Youth, Coil, The Leather Nun, The Damned, The Fall, Fools Dance (featuring Simon Gallup of The Cure), Big Black, Head Of David, Alternative TV, and many others, this book helps illustrate just how far punk and its own darkened tendrils actually reached in an age when fanzines and their concomitant cousins in mail art, cassette labels and suchlike helped fill in the gaps the music weeklies simply couldn't. This will be of interest to all who grew up through this era and still have a place for it in their hearts, besides those with a lot of interest in any of the groups featured. 300 pages; A4 softcover.

Funk arrangements, fat bass, and crazy synths all melt together in a record that transports the dancer to a remote piece of land in the middle of the Caribbean. This rare Afro-boogie and Zouk synth funky LP was recorded in Switzerland in 1986 by this incredible artist that knew how to condense the vibe and lifestyle of a region in a piece of black gold. "Dread Vibrations" or "Sortilège", two of the seven cuts that compose this work are both ready to delight a listener on the prettiest sun rise as well as make dancers drool at the end of a three-day festival. "Femmes Pays Douces" is an impressive exercise where vocals decorate a melodic instrumentation that could be listened in loop forever. "Bizness A Bangkok" is a synth and jazzy masterpiece that captures the '80s pure essence and brings peace to the body and mind. Glossy Mistakes unleashes its second release reissuing this highly demanded piece of music that really deserves to reach an audience that can appreciate this ode to the Caribbean islands. Let yourself loose and embrace the essence of the '80s Raphäel Toiné sounds with a fresh coconut in your hands. Remastered by Wouter Brandenburg. Edition of 600.

KOKUBO, TAKASHI Digital Soundology #1 Volk Von Bauhaus LP
Repressed. Glossy Mistakes present the first official reissue of Takashi Kokubo's Digital Soundology #1 Volk Von Bauhaus, originally released in 1985. Ambient and environmental Japanese scene has flourished stronger than ever over the last few years. The pioneers of this sound and the creators of an innovative way of making and understanding ambient music, such as Hiroshi Yoshimura, Yoshio Ojima, Toshifumi Hinata, or Takashi Kokubo have been championed and their works have been successfully unearthed by reissue labels. Continuing in this endless path, Glossy Mistakes adds Takashi Kokubo's brilliant Volk Von Bauhaus to its catalog, with the Japanese masterpiece as the third official release of the Spanish label. As with most '80s Japanese ambient and environmental music, Volk Von Bauhaus is an audio impression designed to give a multi-sensory experience to the listener. An effort to make things audible, an exercise of understanding, and sound tracking objects or situations. The main objective of this sound is to create an iconic musical landscape to accompany a specific place. Though his name might be unfamiliar to many, Kokubo has crafted music that has impacted virtually all of Japan, from national mobile phone earthquake alerts to contactless card payment jingles. He was one of the first artists to create ambient music strictly through loops. As he mentioned when release this album, "this recording used no keyboard players, no multitrack tape recording techniques, no analog sounds." A shift on the process of imagining sound. Volk Von Haus is an ode to this ambient, new age, and environmental music created in Japan throughout the '80s. Throughout nine cuts, Kokubo handcrafts his own sound and immerses the listener in a peaceful yet challenging adventure. The record is the first piece of his Digital Soundology series, and arguably his most interesting work due to the groundbreaking techniques he used. "A revolutionary musical expression that shatters the old values," explains Kokubo about this piece. And it's just what you can hear when you play Volk Von Haus. Reissue includes an unheard exclusive track by Takashi Kokubo and an insert with an interview made by Takashi Kokubo. A true gem that must land in every ambient head's musical library. Remastered from master tapes by Frederic Stader.

NEW TWEEDY BROTHERS, THE The New Tweedy Bros! LP
2020 restock. Guerssen Records present a reissue of The New Tweedy Bros!, originally released in 1968. Originally from Portland, the New Tweedy Brothers were formed by brothers Fred and Danny Lackaff, plus Dennis Fagaly and Steve Ekman. In 1966, they relocated to San Francisco, where they were part of the exploding, nascent psychedelic ballroom scene, influencing none other than Jerry Garcia, and sharing the stage with bands like The Warlocks (pre-Grateful Dead), Quicksilver, and Big Brother, among others. Upon returning to Oregon, they self-released their only album in 1968, housed in a striking hexagonal, over-sized silver foil cover, now a holy grail between psychedelic collectors. Innocent vocal harmonies, fuzzy bass, jangly guitars, raga sounds -- 100% uncut psychedelia and garage-y, jangly folk-rock from 1968. RIYL: The Byrds, Moby Grape, Jefferson Airplane, The Charlatans, Buffalo Springfield. "Many punters feel that this LP epitomizes the innocent first wave of 'the West Coast Sound' before it was quickly corrupted." --John T. Berg Master tape sound; Includes insert with rare photos, memorabilia, and an interview with original band member Fred Lackaff; Original hexagonal silver foil artwork adapted to a standard cover.

ALI, AHMED BEN Sibhana 12"
"Reggae music from Libya, recorded in 2008. Released for the first time officially after collecting millions of plays on Youtube. Ahmed Ben Ali was born in 1971 in Benghazi. He went to boarding to school in Canada for 8 years, and returned to Libya. For a couple of years he also worked in the UK. Music was never his main job but his 'main hobby' as Ahmed says. Hhe recorded maybe 40 tracks and released two more albums. He also started playing gigs in Libya with his own band. In 2008 a friend of his decided to set up a youtube account for him by starting with two uploaded tracks. The account remained untouched since 11 years. At some points two of the tracks from this account started gaining traction. 'Sibhana', the infectious Libyan reggae, which you can also hear on this release and 'Damek Majeb', the second track on this 12 inch which is leaning more towards a clubby Arabic pop feel. The vinyl comes with a four page booklet and a DLL code."

WULFFLUW XCIV Ngoma Injection LP
Absolutely killer ten-tracker debut album on Hakuna Kulala by Russian avant-club producer and DJ Wulffluw XCIV. Designed to cause serious cerebral and physical damage on dancefloors across the world. Innovative and genre-blending, Wulffluw XCIV incorporates industrial/EBM techno and synthetized tones with dembow rhythms, kuduro and gqom to forge layered corporeal music with no geographical borders that feels vast. Each track is richly textured, surgically produced with agility and fierce finesse connecting a barrage of sounds and cultural influences plus high doses of playful and visual appeal. Wulffluw drops multiple emotional club bangers that are intriguing and jittery, marked by the front, harsh and unrelenting percussions, and enriched with repetitive sonic explosions, haunting vocals, cyberpunk ambience, and emphasized loud-soft dynamics. Standout tracks include Ash Bay and the psy-trancy Endelea. With this album (while in residency in Kampala) Wulffluw XCIV reveals a vigorous artistic sensitivity defined by his interest in connecting disparate communities and diasporic styles. In the past he has collaborated with musicians from all over the world, among others Ink Midget, Santa Muerte & Rafa Maya, Blastah, Nahshi, Yoshitaka Hikawa, AN System, Icy Flame, and Whiterose.

REDMOND, ROY Ain't That Terrible/A Change Is Gonna Come 7"
"Very little is known about Roy Redmond besides the fact he recorded 4 songs and 2 singles in 1967 for Loma Records, a Warner Bros subsidiary that is well known by Norther Soul/60s Soul aficionados. Redmond's largest success is probably his soulful cover of The Beatles' 'Good Day Sunshine', considered by some as one of the best Beatles covers. His other single is a more obscure affair featuring on the A Side 'Ain't That Terrible' and on the flip 'A Change Is Gonna Come', a very fine cover of the Sam Cooke's classic -- beautiful stuff. The A-side 'Ain't That Terrible' is a stylish, up tempo, relentless Northern Soul piano stomper that will get Soul fans up and moving their moneymakers in no time! Relatively unknown, this track is on par with the greatest numbers of the genre such as Lou Pride's 'I'm Coming Home In The Morning' or Bob and Earl's 'Harlem Shuffle'. This is pure underground Northern Soul at its absolute best. To be played often and... LOUD. Keep the faith!"

"Includes a glossy full color poster of the cover art. This is the first volume of the Hot Sauce compilation LPs dedicated to the Trojan related UK labels between 1965 and 1975. The initial plan is for at least three albums of 14 titles. Hot Sauce Vol. 1 features rocksteady, boss reggae, early dub & early reggae outstanding original Jamaican tracks including rare songs, overlooked gems, hidden treasures and some hits. The record labels showcased on the first volume are Attack, Amalgamated, Black Swan, Blue Cat, Downtown, Doctor Bird, Duke, Grape, High Note, Randy's, and Trojan. The tracks here have been selected according to their musical interest firstly, their rarity, and their complementarity. These tracks are all outstanding tracks, 'killer tracks', there are no 'fillers' whatsoever. Particular attention has been paid to the way the songs are sequenced (or 'mixed') so that the album builds up nicely and gradually, generally starting with the Rocksteady songs on the A side and the '70s songs on the B side. Hot Sauce is a musical journey across the early reggae UK labels and across different Jamaican musical genres & talents and the way they interact together. Since the early '70s Tighten Up series, no compilation have really explored these labels in depth on vinyl..."

KINGSTONIANS, THE Hold Down/Nice Nice 7"
"These two avidly sought-after early reggae tracks have been extracted from the 1970 Sufferer album. They are extremely rare on 7" vinyl and sought after by collectors and reggae fans alike. A mint copy of 'Hold Dow' can fetch over 500 Euros, if you can find one... Jamaican vocal trio, the Kingstonians were formed around 1966 by Cebert Bernard (aka Jackie Bernard) and his brother Lloyd 'Footy' Bernard, along with mutual friend Lloyd Kerr. They began their recording career with producer J.J. Johnson, but had their greatest success between 1968 and 1970 with producer Derrick Harriott, who helped steer the singles 'Singer Man' and 'Sufferer' to the top of the Jamaican charts. An LP of the Harriott material was released in 1970 under the title Sufferer. The album was the career high point for the Kingstonians, who left Harriott to work briefly with producers Leslie Kong and Rupie Edwards before breaking up as the roots reggae era began. With 'Hold Down', The Kingstonians presented an outstanding track with great vocals, tight lyrics and a rhythm guaranteed to get those brogues tapping! This gem quickly became a genuine anthem right next to the likes of '54-46 Was My Number' or 'Moon Hop' and yet has never been repressed on 7-inch vinyl. On the B-Side you'll find 1969's single from The Kingstonians, 'Nice Nice.' This is another cracking uptempo track, very typical of The Kingstonians & Derrick Harriott's production at that time and a perfect flip side for the A Side anthem."

ELLIS, ALTON Pumping In/Knock On Wood 7"
"Alton Ellis was born in Kingston, Jamaica into a musical family including his younger sister, reggae singer Hortense Ellis. He was a man of many talents, he was a dancer before becoming a singer, writer, producer, record shop and label owner. Through his 50 years career, Alton never stopped singing. Through his five decades in Reggae music, Alton scored some massive reggae and ska hits, but there is one Jamaican music that really defined him: Rocksteady. He released the first Rocksteady song aptly called 'Get Ready - Rocksteady' on the first Rocksteady album also named 'Get Ready Rock Steady.' Harlem Shuffle now presents two of their favorites from Alton Ellis. The hard to find cut 'Pumping In' is on the A Side. Sometimes mistitled 'Puping In', this song original release is a bit of a mystery... As far as we can track, it was published for the first time on the 2013 compilation Alton Ellis Mr Soul Of Jamaica on the Treasure Isle label and on two CD compilations on the Doctor Bird label and that's it. This cracking up-tempo track from 1970 has a heavy guitar work, a killer organ and some real gutsy vocals to boot. The sound and rhythm are quite different from Ellis previous songs and, sign of time, have a distinctive Boss Reggae feel and it really rocks! 'Pumping In' is an absolute gem that has been badly overlooked up to now. On the B Side, it's 'Knock On Wood', the Eddy Floyd mega hit. Alton covered this cut more on more than once occasion. The Studio One/Coxsone Dodd is more common, this version produced by Joe Gibbs is a bit more raw, and has never issued on 7" vinyl until now."

VA Soul Chronology Live! (The Sixties) 4CD
This box set is a companion piece to the eight-CD set From Sacred To Secular: A Soul Awakening, which traced the history of soul music from its earliest antecedents in 1927 right up to the first true soul records released in 1962. This selection of CDs continues the story from 1962 up to the end of the decade, covering a large portion of soul music's Golden Age with 100 tracks by soul's greatest '60s superstars (from Aretha Franklin to Stevie Wonder) and a whole host of "lesser" names whose contribution to the musical genre shouldn't be overlooked. The CDs cover all of soul's many styles from early doo-wop and R&B influenced music to the funk grooves which were to prove so popular in the '70s. Other harbingers of the coming decade can be found here in the first sweet-soul Philly sounds from the Delfonics and Intruders, early funk rock (Sly & The Family Stone) and Chicago's renaissance via Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions. But this Soul Chronology differs from almost every other soul selection in that all the tracks on it are taken from live performances rather than vinyl sources. These sounds are both more immediate and more personal than the records that may well be more familiar to listeners. The production values may be lower than original recordings due to the technological limitations of the period but in their place come the vibrancy of a live act, its intimacy and its raw impact, factors that don't usually come through via vinyl or CD. And there is no place to hide in a live environment - the musicians and singers are able to show just how talented they were without any added tricks or enhancements that studio producers could offer. Also features Isley Brothers, Jackie Wilson, Tina Turner, Ben E. King, Rufus Thomas, Mary Wells, Marvin Gaye, Booker T & The MG's, Ketty Lester, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Brenda Holloway, James Brown, Tommy Tucker, Etta James, Barbara Lewis, Chuck Jackson, Dionne Warwick, Betty Harris, Johnnie Taylor, Shirelles, Vibrations, Contours, Miracles, Four Tops, Supremes, Evie Sands, Fontella Bass, Dobie Gray, Kim Weston, Temptations , Billy Stewart, Shirley Ellis, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Little Anthony & The Imperials, Joe Tex, Major Lance, Gene Chandler, Dusty Springfield & The Vandellas, Drifters, Freddie King, Bettye Swann, Dells, Ikettes, Robert Parker, Willie Mitchell, Sam & Dave, Lou Rawls, Maxine Brown, Garnett Mimms, Maurice & The Radiants, Cleo Randle, Earl Gaines, Otis Redding, Barbara Lynn, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Carnations, Arthur Conley, Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles, Percy Sledge, Mitty Collier, Kelly Brothers, Rodge Martin, Gerri Taylor, Bobby Powell, Nina Simone, Lee Dorsey, Eddie Floyd, Billy Preston/Ray Charles, Chambers Brothers, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Meters, Wilson Pickett, Ike & Tina Turner, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, P.P. BOWERY ELECTRIC Beat 2LP
2020 repress. "The second album from New York City's Bowery Electric was released in late 1996, less than 15 months after their self-titled debut, but it found them having traveled light years musically in the interim, the group having seemingly decided to see how far they could take the guitar/bass/drums/vocal setup into the atmosphere. Every aspect of their approach had been refined and focused: squalling, distorted guitars had been transformed into hazy, sensual sheets; the live drums transmuted to sampled rhythms more in debt to the blossoming down-tempo sound of the day; bass lines reduced to their most basic diagrams; vocals submerged to become one with the narcotized fog of the instruments; even the lyrics were reduced to a few minimal lines used sparingly so as not to overshadow the dynamic. Beat is a lush and dense mantra of shadowy percussion, barely-there vocals and immersive drones that envelops the listener in an opiated blanket of sound. The second in a trio of albums released by the core duo of Lawrence Chandler and Martha Schwendener, Beat is without doubt their definitive artistic statement. Coming 20 years to the day of its original release, this is the first time this album has been available on vinyl in almost two decades, and the first ever U.S. vinyl release."

GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven CD
2020 repress "Appropriately titled in Franglais, Lift... was recorded at Chemical Sounds in Toronto, with 4 track snippets and field recordings added in Montreal. After months of touring, the band is at the peak of its powers. They've spread an audio net out across the continent, recording the static on the radio, the random airwave proselytizing, and the corporate spokesvoice of the service station that are the companions of the long distance driver. Whether it's rickety piano melody, the gentle foreplay of strings, the roil of guitars and drums, or a reminiscence about sleeping on the beach at Coney Island, Godspeed You Black Emperor work on the smallest and grandest of scales (often simultaneously). Nearly two years after the recording of Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada, the band's studio skills have sharpened, bringing the guitars to a howl and the drums to a rumble. The two CDs work well as discrete units or as one extended work."

Undoubtedly, else why bother listening. But the only thing speaking at us right now from these charmed regions are the celestial airs of these Stars of the Lid. Alternately lulling and wielding a potency that wholly escapes 'experimental' musics, SOTL bring big, whomping chunks of sonic firmament with a sustaining, life-affirming sweep. For the most part the latest SOTL missive offers sound sources which refuse to readily reveal themselves. Treated strings, organ or backwards tubular bell runs -- it's simply a sublime chorus of instrument voices, irresistible as the undertow. Also gurgling up in the mix are whimpering pups, shuffling feet, Dictaphone-preserved foreign lecture hall blather, a city bus shouldering to an unsteady stop -- common enough stuff, but rendered here as the sounds of civilization heard distantly, the human receiver filtering everything through a palpable dis-ease that bespeaks a Higher yearning." -- Dean Blackwood

HEKATE ?epec Opync (Days of Wrath) LP
It's not surprising that Hekát? chose their name after the ancient Greek goddess Hekate, the deity of the underworld, witchcraft, nighttime and crossroads. Hekát? are four women coming from different paths, all of which converged in the Spring of 2018, and met at the great crossroad of Athens' eternal night. Their music is multi-referential, an explosive mix of their magic potions. The heavy, melodic bass establishes the base of their post-punk sound. The drums derail it where necessary. The synths, more electric than electronic, can be heard distinctly, at times leaning towards a smarter new wave but also giving a wink at garage rock. The vocals sound like an enraged, rhythmic recital tight-roping along the melody. As a result, their eight tracks move along a scale, starting with melancholic, urban hymns and ending in anxious, frenzied chases, all tied together with a ceremonial atmosphere. The record title, ????? ????? (Days of Wrath), is a translation of the Medieval hymn "Dies Irae," which warns of God's wrath, which will come down on the people during the second coming. Through their lyrics, Hekát? turn their wrath towards God, the people who created Him and the constricting world those people sustain. It starts out like a cry for help and climaxes into a war cry. Hekát?'s war cry is the voice of a generation of emancipated women in motion. With few similar examples across the Greek scene, it comes as the result of their own liberation and of the many who came before them, paving the way. As political beings, Hekát? cannot but reflect their own gender identity in their music. An identity that -- whether on stage or on record, or out there in the high-speed jungle of Greek society -- expresses emotions from discomfort to aggression, as it is by definition obstructed by outdated and invisible privileges. For those who don't wish to understand, they explain it, cut and dry, with their track-manifesto "Soapbox," reminding them: "You think you see me? Well, you see shit!" However, do not be disheartened. Days of Wrath is not some wooden, incomprehensible declaration of ideas. It is a deeply poetic, atmospheric record, doused in cloudy melodies that know when to hit the gas to carry the listener to the other side.

SISAMOUTH, SINN Groove Club Vol. 4: Sinn Sisamouth LP
Restocked. "Discovering the wealth of Cambodian recordings was like falling into a parallel universe, complete with its own Elvises, Patsys and Jimis. You can recognize some of the anonymous outstanding instrumentalists as they appear on record after record and marvel at their uncanny blend of Western and Far East, a pure synergy Western musicians have never accomplished. Of course, looming over every recording is the tragic end of the music and the musicians themselves under the axe of the Khmer Rouge, a cloak of darkness hovering over some of the most joyous, festive music ever made. In a world of instant global communication and mass pop culture, Cambodian rock remains one of the few undiscovered secrets of music. Not content with killing the musicians, the government further ordered the destruction of their records, implicitly understanding the power of pop music to create community. It is a testament to the power of Sinn Sisamouth's music that it has survived all that has been done to vanquish it." --Joel Selvin, author/journalist. LUCIANO Luci Neu House 2LP
Chilean/Swiss producer and DJ Luciano is a prominent figure in the global electronic club music circle. From a young age, he was exposed to music profoundly, as his father worked as a jukebox repairman and possessed a large record collection. When he was twelve, his mother gifted him a guitar, and shortly became a member of a school punk rock band. Soon after, his passion for electronic music rose. Inspired by Detroit techno and engaged by close friends like producer Dandy Jack, he started to play records in local Santiago De Chile dance clubs and became involved in the minimal techno scene around friends like Ricardo Villalobos. When Luciano moved back from Chile to Switzerland in 2000, he established a residency at Weetamix Club in Geneva, and started releasing his own productions on labels like Mental Groove and joining the Cocoon team in Ibiza to play at the famous Monday night at Club Amnesia. Since then, he's become a regular on the Balearic island with various residencies. Besides playing around the globe with the likes of Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin, or Loco Dice, he has released groundbreaking minimal techno and house on his Cadenza label since 2003. His very own music was always ambiguous. There is his club leaning creativity that can dance slightly into pop spheres while never forgetting the power of precisely sliced rhythms and subtle bass sensations. And then there is his calmer sider which displays his love for "music to listen at home, done for a spiritual travel, an inner universe and a moment paralyzed in ether," as he describes it. On his first ever Mule Musiq album release, Luci Neu House, Luciano now delivers meditative music journey full of repetitive patterns that slowly playing tricks on the listeners subconsciousness. Luci Neu House is a one-hour long composition whose esoteric deepness is reminiscent of the intensely meditative class of Luciano's older productions. An epic tune cut on vinyl into four 15-minute long pieces, the piece shifts slowly almost unperceived, whilst absorbing the mind of close observers into a micro-sliced world of moving gentleness. All new music composed by Luciano distributes a mesmerizing healing spirit, that grounds organically, even if it is totally rooted in the digital, software-driven world of composing music.

GUN CLUB, THE Fire Of Love LP
2020 repress; 2003 release. Jeffrey Lee Pierce -- reggae enthusiast, heroin addict, and former president of the Blondie fan club -- suffered a lonely, depressing death on March 31st, 1996 of a brain hemorrhage, after untold years of drug use and alcoholism. Why this event mattered much to anyone lay in a fantastic record his band, The Gun Club, recorded 16 years earlier: the masterful Fire Of Love. A visionary and fierce moment in time when The Gun Club took the raw, dripping meat of shopworn delta blues and infused it with the energy and fire of the LA punk rock scene. Inspired by bands like X, Television and the Cramps, he met Kid Congo Powers (who later played with Nick Cave and Cramps) and they formed the Creeping Ritual in 1979, soon to be renamed The Gun Club. Pierce was already a notorious drunk, exhibitionist, poet and fanboy. The Gun Club were quickly a dangerous new spoke on the spinning wheel of dynamic LA alt-culture. By 1980, Jeffrey Lee had moved into a deep reverence for Mississippi delta blues. The Gun Club paid more than passing homage: they wholeheartedly swiped complete riffs, words and attitude from the masters. Pierce participated in the great blues singer tradition by cobbling together distinct lines from other people's songs to create new ones. Snatches of Blind Willie Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Robert Johnson can be heard throughout this debut LP -- released in 1981 on Slash's Ruby Records. What makes Fire Of Love such a brilliant listen long after its time is that this blatant homage to the blues was amplified, energized and kicked into overdrive -- in a new style that combined the ghostliness of the original model with a FAST, unwound and supremely energetic beat. The engineering feats of Pat Burnette contributed to that sound: he wielded his Quad-Teck studios like a weapon, and mastered some of the greatest sides in LA music history (such as Germs' GI). Pure fullness of sound and the raw hot throb of records that were made to stand the test of time. From the immensely dark and aggressive sexuality of "Sex Beat," Gun Club's most recognizable number, to the fetishistic salute to fellow traveler Poison Ivy of The Cramps in "For The Love Of Ivy," including the hellfire classic "She's Like Heroin To Me," a 2:33 masterpiece in which everything comes together; Fire Of Love is pure perfection. It stands among the greatest classics of rock history, and shows the genius of the great Jeffrey, whose haunted singing has never been replaced. It proved out to be one of the most influential records of the '80s, with countless musicians declaring their love for the Club.

BLAKE, TIM Crystal Machine 2LP
Munster Records present an extended reissue of Tim Blake's Crystal Machine, originally released in 1977. This serious art piece contains all the strangeness, audacity, and the beauty of a distinctive cosmic excursion. It is an oddity, and it doesn't belong to any of the generations of the rock or pop fabrics because of its character of being strangely ethereal and eternal. In the context of cosmic rock, alongside all German pioneers such as Kluster, Tangerine Dream, Organisation, Kraftwerk, and Ash Ra Temple, the English born, French based, Tim Blake occupies a highlighted seat. However, Blake is also a mastermind-pilot of the so-called electronic prog, where other stellar names like Klaus Schulze, Michael Garrison, Edgar Froese, and Vangelis, figure as exponents. Timothy Blake (London, 1952) is a composer, keyboardist, synthesizer player, tape operator, vocalist, and arranger who gained attention when working with cult acts like Gong and Hawkwind, as well as a freelancing member of the French cosmic-proggers Clearlight Symphony and for Steve Hillage. His knowledge of propelling the expansion of his musical-psychological plus the phenomena-antenna hit your brain like no other sound-visions dare to do. It is an early kind of what became to be known worldwide as new age and, at the same time, the cement for the foundations of ambient music. Crystal Machine was released in 1977, followed by many others till the present as well as his participation as a player in Hawkwind in the late '70s to early '80s. The timeless sounds of his Crystal Machine, released on the French Barclay's imprint Egg were largely recorded live. The organic textures lead us to the unknown particles of our imagination, and its body of bravery and simultaneous colored lightness provoke sensations of how anyone's can lose themselves in the interiors of this thing called perception. There are five tracks, four of them recorded live at Seasalter Free Festival (1976) and Le Palace Théâtre Paris (1977). Only the short and charming "Crystal Presence" is a studio recording. Included in this reissue is a second vinyl of rare recordings. "Synthese Intemporelle I" and "Synthese Intemporelle II" are taken from a rare 7" issued only in Spain under the title "Síntesis Intemporal" and "Surf", another 7" A-side issued under the pseudonym Saratoga Space Messengers, a spacey new wave pop slab, with the designer and singer Brigitte Perron whispering tripping digits. The trio of the remaining tracks form part of The Birth of Crystal Machine.

WARSAW PAKT Lorraine/Dogfight 7"
Warsaw Pakt favored a high-revving formula with hard-boiled street-smart lyrics delivered quick and cool against super-charged Chuck Berry guitar licks, a modus operandi much like the MC5 circa Back In The USA (1970), but with a vibe that was more attuned to the pubs and squats of their native London's Ladbroke Grove. Though given a punk rock paint job, the sound is redolent with the fumes of high-octane British R&B, a dead giveaway of their roots, as The Rockets. Their LP Needle Time stands as one of the most authentic documents of the lean, visceral sound of London punk rock in 1977. The songs included on this single are earlier studio versions of two of the best tracks included on Needle Time and cast similar energy levels shown on stage. The fast and furious "Lorraine" was recorded at Milner Sound in Fulham Road (August 1977) with the band's first drummer, Wolf Marlander. "Dogfight" on the flip belongs to their first recording session that took place at the Island Records studio a month earlier. Available on vinyl for the first time.

MODIFICACION Across The Time/Annelie 7"
Following Munster's recent release of their complete recordings (MR 408LP) -- which includes previously unpublished songs -- the label present on 7" with two of Modificación's most in-demand songs. The now legendary freakbeat number "Across the Time" was crafted by the Valencia-based band during their recording sessions in Madrid at Audiofilm studios (1972) and has found its rightful place, over the years, as one of the most admired and sought-after singles of Spanish underground music. "Annelie", on the flip, dates back from the early days of the group, when they recorded a single for EMI, Llegará el día que me quieras (1971), featuring Juan Bau on vocals (later to become a popular crooner in Spain). This B-side track shows Modificación's interest in bands like Grand Funk Railroad, Iron Butterfly, Rare Earth... also adding a certain Latin-soul twist that rounds it up as a highly effective dancefloor artifact.

These early performances are considered as seminal works not only for Hopkins's career but also for the whole history of country blues. Here, Lightnin' is mostly alone with his guitar, except on some tracks where he is joined by pianist Wilson "Thunder" Smith or some unknown drummer. Hopkins's intense guitar and deep voice and lyrics are at the very center of this unprecedented music. In one word: A masterpiece!

ORAM, DAPHNE Oramics 2CD
2020 restock. Daphne Oram is best-known for the design of her Oramics system, and also for co-founding the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1957, but until the release of this material, the only easily-available piece of music by her on CD was the 8-minute long "Four Aspects." There was also a 7" EP from 1962 on HMV, released as part of the Listen, Move and Dance series that was specifically designed to help children dance. Although the short pieces on this record are very basic, it could be argued that this is the first-ever electronic dance record! This is a survey of nearly all the major pieces that she produced since her departure from the BBC in January 1959 until her final tape piece in 1977. During this time, she worked independently in her home studio, and thanks to a grant from the Gulbenkian Foundation in 1962, she was able to pursue her interests. In Britain there were no state-funded studios other than the Radiophonic Workshop, which mainly existed at the behest of the drama studio and was not generally seen as a place to develop personal artistic ideas. There were also no university studios at this time, so it was necessary for British electronic composers to be self-funded. Throughout this period, she devoted her attention to developing her Oramics "drawn sound" system, which consisted of a large machine that enabled drawn patterns to be converted into sound. This system was eventually fully realized in the late '60s and several pieces here incorporate its use. The two and-a-half hours of music on this 2CD set covers the whole range of Oram's post-BBC output. All of the music is electronic with some occasional use of real instruments, especially small percussion and piano frame. There is also some use of musique concrète techniques. The works fall roughly into the following categories: works for TV and cinema advertising, film soundtracks, music for theater productions, installations and exhibitions as well as concert pieces and several studio experiments. There are also a few short pieces that resulted from an experimental music course given by Oram at a high school in Yorkshire in 1967.

BURROUGHS, WILLIAM S. Curse Go Back LP
2020 restock. William Burroughs was in and out of London from the mid-50s to 1974 and for several years quite settled in a flat near Piccadilly. During this latter time he developed and refined the techniques he used for creating cut-ups on tape. Working closely with Ian Sommerville, who helped acquire, and no doubt maintain, the various tape recorders that Burroughs used and abused in these experimental works. The work here is in two sections, which in their original form lasted for over an hour and first appeared in 1998 under the name Electronic Revolution as a free CD with Issue One of the French magazine Crash. The CD was quickly withdrawn with maybe only 100 copies finding their way into circulation. This edition is edited down to 46 minutes and comprises the core of the original recording. It employs the now familiar techniques of random drop-ins and cut-ups of readings. The readings themselves are also cut-ups of words on the page. The first section of the tape uses further processing by means of a second tape recorder. Recorded in Duke Street in 1968, the tape was then passed on to Brion Gysin in Paris where it remained in his archive until 1998. This is the first readily available edition of an hypnotic and meditative recording that examines the hidden power of words. Closer to work of sound poetry than anything literary. The album includes a 12"x12" insert with an essay by Ben Harper and several previously unseen portrait photos of Burroughs, taken by Harriet Crowder in her Hammersmith flat during a drug experiment. The back cover uses another Crowder image - the very next frame after the famous shot that appeared on the cover of the English Bookshop/ESP Call Me Burroughs LP (1965). Pressed at Optimal on transparent vinyl. Edition of 500 (numbered).

O'ROURKE, JIM Shutting Down Here LP
Repressed. Shutting Down Here is a special work. Symbolically, it covers a period of thirty years, between two visits by Jim O'Rourke to the GRM, the first, as a young man fascinated by the institution and his repertoire, the second, as an accomplished musician, influential and imbued with an aura of mystery. Shutting Down Here is a piece shaped like a universe, a heterogeneous world in which collides the multiple musical facets of Jim O'Rourke: instrumental writing, field recordings, electronic textures, and cybernetic becomings, dynamic spaces, harmonic spaces, silent spans. This variety of approach, strangely, does not in any way weaken the coherence of the whole and this is the talent of Jim O'Rourke, a talent, properly speaking, of composition, where all the sound elements compete and participate to stakes that exceed them and of a common destiny, that is to say of an apparition. Due to the wide dynamic levels, please adjust your volume accordingly.Released in association with Editions Mego. Coordination GRM: François Bonnet, Jules Négrier. Executive Production: Peter Rehberg. Recorded at INA GRM and Steamroom. Personnel: Eiko Ishibashi - piano; Atsuko Hatano - violin, viola; Eivind Lonning - trumpet. ASTARON Astaron LP
Reissue, originally released in 1987. Astaron from Vienna Austria were a music and art performance duo made up of Angie Mörth (member of Viele Bunte Autos) and Martina Aichhorn who existed from 1984 to 1989. Influenced by the Viennese Actionism, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Kate Bush and armed with a big dose of black humor and a true love for trash culture they created an impressively unique body of work. They released two DIY tapes, one 12", and this stunning self-titled album at the tail end of 1987. It was originally released by local label Ton Um Ton Records in a criminally low pressing of 500 copies. It's an unadjusted highly experimental and totally addictive dark wave album with hints of minimal post punk. The music ranges from dirge-like chants to ethereal pop to haunting ballads. It's pure melancholic beauty from start to finish. Think KUKL, Cocteau Twins, Young Marble Giants, Brian Eno, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, and Diamanda Galas.

STALTERI, ARTURO From Ajanta to Lhasa LP
From Ajanta to Lhasa is an intense and unique work with mystical and exotic references that sees the light for the first time in 40 years, and find its place among the must-haves artifacts of the Italian experimental/minimalist scene. In 1979, upon returning from a two-month trip to India, Arturo Stàlteri, a pianist of undisputed value and founder member of Italian prog duo Pierrot Lunaire, withdraws in his studio to set this strong experience to music. References to the overseas minimalism by Terry Riley, Philip Glass, and La Monte Young are obvious, as well as clear hints to Popol Vuh. The suite from which the album takes its title is inspired by the days Stàlteri spent in Ajanta exploring the cave paintings which made a great impression on him. The days he spent in Goa can be found in "Floating Moon", specifically an evening when a giant moon shrouded in fog, looking like a huge ball floating on the ocean, magically appeared. From Ajanta to Lhasa is the result of a search for an inner dimension free from the conditioning of Western civilization.

Table primarily finds Pumice deep in a pastoral expanse, with Farley's violin lines and Neville's organ drones serving collectively as guide. BRUGGER, MARTIN Music For Video Stores LP
On his debut album, producer and Squama co-founder Martin Brugger hovers through ambient, (upbeat) downbeat, and unfulfilled build-ups. Conceptualized as a blank soundtrack, the music was sent to fellow artists who shared their visual and verbal associations which became the source for the artwork and track titles, effectively making the album a collective effort. Evident in all of his recent projects is Brugger's passion for working and thriving within closely set limits. The only audio sources in the process of making the album were his record player and a Dave Smith Prophet 08 synthesizer. In an antithesis to most sample-based music, Brugger takes the more ephemeral moments of recorded music and uses pitching tools as a magnifying glass to dive deeper into the sound and bare layers that normally remain unheard. Includes three photo prints and riso-printed inlay.

Simon Popp and Sebastian Wolfgruber, aka Fazer Drums, team up with Tunisian producer Azu Tiwaline for the second part of their hybrid Sound Measures series. With interwoven, polyrhythmic grooves they explore the concept of counterpoint, drawing inspiration from gamelan, Afro-Cuban, and swing. That's material made in heaven for Azu Tiwaline, who made sizeable waves this year with her Magnetic Service EP on Bristol's Livity Sound Recordings. In her rework, she kept the focus on the drums, boiling down and rearranging the different parts into a seven-minute beast of a tune. Layers of her signature dubbed-out electronics add to the mystic aura, while maintaining the dynamics and musicality of the recordings.

The compilation starts off with the Afro disco classic "Mi Mi Africa" by harmonica player Nobuo Yagi. "Silver Spot" is a jazzy fusion disco track taken from composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist Nobuyuki Shimizu's first album (1980), released when he was 19. The track features singer Epo. "Samba Night" is by vocalist Keisuke Yamamoto and his band Piper, from their masterpiece second album Summer Breeze (1983) -- a delightful city pop number for fans of Tatsuro Yamashita. "Akogareno Sundown" is a Japanese soul classic, sung by singer Haruko Kuwana (sister of Masahiro Kuwana). Produced by Mackey Feary Band, known for the soulful classic "A Million Stars". "Koiwa Saiko (I'm In Love)" is a mellow and groovy track by singer Aru Takamura, the great-grandchild of sculptor Kouun Takamura. It can be thought of as Japan's answer to Cheryl Lynn's "Got To Be Real". "What The Magic Is To Try" is a cult electropop track by Honma Express, a project helmed by producer Kanji Honma. Hailed as Japan's Trevor Horn, he is also known as the producer of legendary techno pop band TPO. "Colored Music" is a song by Colored Music, a duo of pianist Ichiko Hashimoto and her partner Atsuo Fujimoto. Taken from their sole album (1981), the Japanese rare groove treasure is a mesh of new wave, synth pop, and jazz influences. The dubby electronic new wave disco "Electric City" is a B side of pop idol group Shohjo-Tai & Red Bus St Project's debut 12" single. "Love Is The Competition" is a breezy disco jam by Okinawa-born bilingual artist Hitomi Tohyama, originally featured on her album Next Door (1983). Taken from Mariah project's diva Yumi Murata's first album (1979), "Krishna" is a funky and soulful rockin' disco cut. Reminiscent of Chaka Khan's "I Know You, I Live You", "Live Hard, Live Free" is a song by jazz vocalist Eri Ohno who is known for her work with DJ Krush. "Rocket 88" is a melancholic disco number by singer Minnie originally released through Sapporo's independent label Paradise Records. Closing out the 13-track compilation is Japanese disco staple "Tokyo Melody", sung by Shoody and backed by Tetsuji Hayashi's disco band the Eastern Gang. Compiled by Toshiya Kawasaki. 'The product of two years of solid gigging in their native Vancouver, by the hottest punk rock band the West Coast ever produced this side of the much different Weirdos and Avengers, Something Better Change features a trio so molten, they didn't even manage to get it all down in the studio. And yet it still is an absolutely awesome record. So heavy with chops it nearly leaks, soaring like the best Clash/Pistols/S.L.F. riffs filtered through an American anvil power even those greats couldn't approach.' --Jack Rabid, All Music"

URLAUB IN POLEN All CD
It has been nine years since Urlaub In Polen announced they were disbanding with the release of their fifth album Boldstriker. However, drummer Jan Philipp Janzen and multi-instrumentalist and singer Georg Brenner have always made up one of those rare and highly unlikely bands who, despite market laws to the contrary, have put the context of their own work above fads and opportunity without ever denying that they inhabit a particular historical moment. On All, their unexpected sixth album, it becomes immediately clear that the term "reunion", at least in the sense we've gotten used to, does not do this occurrence justice. All is light years away from offering a lukewarm rehashing of ancient recipes for success -- the album is highly ambitious and sounds fresh in its concentrated performance -- not unlike a debut. This is because the considerable advantages of a long-term musical relationship are at display throughout the record. Not only with regards to the tightness of performance, but also regarding a level of musical familiarity with one another; a rare feat that has always carried the band's musical explorations, and which balances the dynamics and structures of All as a whole. This interplay is accentuated by the record's production, for which Janzen (among others a founding member part of Von Spar, current drummer of Die Sterne and producer of Die Sterne, The Field, PTTRNS, Albrecht Schrader, etc.) and Brenner are also responsible. Urlaub In Polen have also always been a band that defies categorization. But what the songs on All have in common is an architecture evoking krautrock, developing sprawling synthesizer, and guitar workouts on the foundations of finely woven rhythm arrangements. The echoes of west coast pop (the harmonies and the bass), of Rhineland tech house and of early Dire Straits (the vocals and the guitar production) make All a characteristically versatile and international affair. The album shares with their previous efforts the interest and attention for sonic textures and contrasts, but showcases more constraint and focus. In place of noise, details and the enormous joy of playing between Brenner and Janzen come to the fore, equally in the stoic desert kraut hits "Impulse Response" and "THDT", the polyrhythmic "Overall", or the discoid "Proxy Music".

PHILIPPE & THE NIGHT MAIL, LOUIS Thunderclouds LP
LP version. Key figure of the baroque pop/chamber pop genre Louis Philippe's musical output seems to follow a spasmodic timetable. This year has already seen the release of The Devil Laughs (PICI 019CD/LP), his critically acclaimed second collaboration with Young Marble Giant Stuart Moxham, now followed by Thunderclouds, on which he is joined by The Night Mail, a three-man band made up of Robert Rotifer (guitar), former Acid Jazz artist Andy Lewis (bass), and ex-member of Thrashing Doves and Death in Vegas, Ian Button (drums). Philippe and Rotifer have been close friends for many years. At the end of the first lockdown period, Rotifer went to see Philippe at his flat to go through the endless pile of musical sketches the latter had amassed during his prolonged hiatus. In early September the whole band finally got together for two rehearsals before decamping to Rimshot Studios in rural Kent to record the backing tracks for all thirteen songs as well as overdubbing strings (played by violinist Rachel Hall from Big Big Train) and trumpet parts (by Shanti Jayasinha), followed by another session overdubbing vocals, keyboards, percussion, and some more guitars, expertly engineered by Andy Lewis at Rotifer's home studio in Canterbury. The result is an album that evokes that city's fabled brand of whimsical prog just as much as Philippe's deep roots in French song-craft and a shared love for the autumnal side of sunshine pop. "Living on Borrowed Time", a catchy, bass-driven, sounds like the theme tune to a lost Lemmy Caution movie. While the album's title track cloaks the anticipation of a coming storm in heavily jazz-tinged Wyattesque chords magically rising out of the singing noise emanating from a building site next to Louis Philippe's Shepherd's Bush home, light-footed waltzes like "Fall In A Daydream" and "Once In A Lifetime Of Lies" manage to make London feel like Paris, before the closing track "When London Burns" invites the listener onto an imaginary dance-floor where an anglophone Michel Polnareff meets disco boffin Biddu. In between all that, you traverse the eerie aural cityscapes of "Alphaville", the wide dynamic range of two song suites ("The Man Who Had It All" and "Rio Grande"), the Tropicalia/folk-flavored subtlety of "The Mighty Owl", the surprising gospel grooves of "Love Is The Only Light", the arresting stop-and-start dramatics of "No Sound", the unexpected Celtic tones of "Do I" and the equally loony and beautiful semi-instrumental "Willow".

DEMAE Life Works Out... Usually LP
Touching Bass continue to pry open a distinct, exciting lane for themselves as a label home for forward-thinking, soulful music with the incredible debut project from London's Demae (aka Bubblerap and one-third of Hawk House) entitled Life Works Out... Usually. Life Works Out... Usually is a soothing antidote to these turbulent times; a soulful coming-of-age story celebrating black joy, self-empowerment and life learnings centered around an integral two year period of growth and featuring appearances from Fatima (Eglo Records), Joe Armon-Jones, Ego Ella May, and Nala Sinephro -- all part of a close-knit, London-based musical community. Sonically, it draws a unique line between the grit of inner-city London soul, interstellar Flying Lotus electronic rushes and new-age Dilla-isms mixed with flecks of London's exciting jazz-influenced sounds. Production comes from rising producers like Eun (Ego Ella May, Denzel Himself), Jake Milliner (Slum Village, Yazmin Lacey, Lord Apex), 104.ROG (Liv.e, THEESatisfaction), and Wu-Lu (Ego Ella May). For those not yet accustomed, Demae's work stretches beyond her solo project. She has been a fundamental part of Fatima's touring band as a backing vocalist since the release of her much-loved second album And Yet It's All Love (2018). Prior to that, she was one-third of hip-hop adventurists, Hawk House, whose introspective, eclectic style was reshuffling the rule book for UK-based rap, quickly making them one of the UK's most exciting emerging sounds and earning fans from Mac Miller and Ghostpoet to Wretch 32 and Jill Scott.

STACK WADDY Bugger Off! LP
2020 restock. Trading Places present a reissue of Stack Waddy's Bugger Off!, originally released in 1972. Bugger Off! picked up where its predecessor left off, and rampaged on from there. Covers of Zappa's "Willy the Pimp" and the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" might have seemed a little obvious, but both are battered down with such a glorious lack of finesse that it's impossible to object -- anybody familiar with, respectively, Juicy Lucy and the Hammersmith Gorillas' versions of the same songs will come in with at least a vague idea of what to expect, but that's about it. "Hoochie Coochie Man" is even more disheveled, and when John Peel's liner notes reminisce on the group's insistence on recording live, you can tell he's not necessarily looking back with any fondness. On one occasion, he suggested they do a little overdubbing. The band's response to his words would become the album's title. Includes "Mama Keep Your Big Mouth Shut" as bonus track taken from the 1972 John Peel Session. Licensed from Cherry Red.

MOODY BLUES The Magnificent Moodies LP
Trading Places present a reissue of Moody Blues' The Magnificent Moodies, originally released in 1965. Although chiefly associated with art rock and progressive rock due to the symphonic bent of their breakthrough second album, Days Of Future Passed (1967), as the group name attests, The Moody Blues began as a rhythm and blues band, formed in Eridngton, a suburb of Birmingham, England in 1964, spinning off from local bands El Riot & The Rebels and the Krew Cats. Keyboardist Mike Pinder, flutist/percussionist Ray Thomas, guitarist Denny Laine, drummer Graeme Edge, and bassist Clint Warwick are the featured players on their debut disc, released by Decca in 1965 following the chart success of outstanding single, "Go Now," (a cover of an emotive r and b song by black American female singer, Bessie Banks) and unlike every subsequent release, this album has a heavy Mersey Beat rhythm and blues influence, as well as an overarching blues-pop grounding. The first side is made up of covers, including a great cut of Chris Kenner's "Something You Got," while side two is mostly taken up with original numbers penned by Mike Pinder and Denny Laine. A crucial piece of the Moodies' archeology, The Magnificent Moodies captures the group at their very beginnings. Includes six bonus tracks. Licensed by Cherry Red.

JULY The Second of July LP
Trading Places present a reissue of July's The Second of July, demos for their debut album recorded in 1968. The obscure west London psychedelic rock act, July, arose from the ashes of rhythm and blues group The Tomcats, who had some success in Spain in the mid-60s after absorbing members of fellow musical travelers, Second Thoughts. Back in London in 1968, co-founder Tom Newman, later known for his engineering and production work on Tubular Bells, shifted the group into psychedelic mode with his guitar friend, Pete Cook, writing material that would draw the guitarist/bandleader Spencer Davis in a management role, leading to a contract with Major Minor records for their self-titled debut LP, which failed to chart, but the inclusion of songs such as "My Clown", "Dandelion Seeds", and "The Way" on various compilations have assured a strong underground following. The rare demos that make up The Second of July date from before the debut album was recorded and reveal the group in all their evolving experimental glory, the sound not only blending psychedelic rock and pop with lush harmonies, intricate lead guitar, and scintillating keyboards, but also including Indian elements such as sitar and tabla (and Indian-derived chord sequences), plus trippy tape loops and phasing. ULTRAFUNK Ultrafunk LP
Trading Places present a reissue of Ultrafunk's self-titled album, originally released in 1975. Anonymous British funk studio outfit Ultrafunk was spearheaded by Blues & Soul magazine proprietor John Abbey, who ran a fashionable record shop and label called Contempo in London's West End during the 1970s; he conceived of the group as the UK counterpart to US studio bands like MFSB. Arranger Gerry Shury, who had worked with Barry White and Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees, drafted guitarist Chris Rae and bassist Frank McDonald (who often composed library music together) and future Rubettes drummer John Richardson to form the group, in situ. A lack of band photos, suggestive song titles and a predilection for American cover tunes led many to believe the band was US-based. Their self-titled debut LP is where the myth all begins, with a number of truly atmospheric and cinematic hard funk instrumentals, given added textural depth through full orchestration, including covers of Bill Withers's "Use Me" and Stevie Wonder's "Living In The City." Though not quite as compelling as the better-known follow-up set, Meat Heat, there is still plenty to savor on Ultrafunk, making this debut companion disc a must-have for all true funk afficionados. After performing together across Manhattan, cementing their creative bond, Pete Rock & The Soul Brothers combined their individual musical influences and experiences to craft a smooth sonic experience that is truly the sum of all of its stylistic and instrumental parts. JAIME & NAIR Jaime & Nair LP
Vampisoul present a reissue of Jaime & Nair's self-titled album, originally released in 1974. Loaded with an exquisite quality, marked by all good aspects the Brazilian popular music of the '70s, and obscure as hell, the self-titled debut by the duo Jaime & Nair is a revelation of all sorts. Recorded in 1974, when the artists had just turned 22, the album was released on CID a company that -- at that same moment -- had signed other important musicians like Nana Caymmi and Emílio Santiago. Outsiders par excellence, and influenced by the Clube Da Esquina (1972) sound (a sui generis musical architecture blended by Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges in 1973), forró (a propulsive North-Eastern rhythm), samba, bossa, classical arrangements, and country-pop touches, this is an expressive album full of charm through a gesture of swing. The outstanding and largely hailed song "Sob O Mar" brings you back to a pure Brazilian soft-bossanova-beat adorned by luscious orchestral arrangements. It became a popular DJ tune for those in the know after being comped in the fantastic High Jazz series in the early 2000s, gaining this album grail status among collectors worldwide. But there is much more to it, the catchy "Névoa Seca" stars a psych-guitar, subtlety, soloing all the way through a seductive pop atmosphere while "Reino Das Pedras" has a melodic-rootsy vibe, close to a toada (a rhythmic variation of a lament), that recalls some shadows of Tom Jobim and Edu Lobo. And the delightful soft trip goes on and on, combining a dreamy lullaby vibe with subtle touches of Brazilian folk. The mind-blowing list of studio musicians present at the recording sessions includes a mix of cariocas (people from Rio de Janeiro), well know names like Wilson Das Neves, José Roberto Bertrami (from Azymuth) and Copinha, with paulistas (natives of São Paulo) from the suburbs like future luminaries as Elder Bedaque and Jorge Carvalho, making this album an even more essential addition to any serious Brazilian music collection.

O'SULLIVAN, DANIEL Electric Maya: Dream Flotsam And Astral Hinterlands LP
"First in a series of three records of library music miniatures from composer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel O'Sullivan (Æthenor, Ulver, This is Not This Heat, etc). For heads, the term 'library music' in 2020 might evoke dodgy Italian gray market LPs and crate diggers hunting for 'funky breaks' -- but London's venerable KPM Music is working with groundbreakers like O'Sullivan to open up new avenues for composers to experiment. Electric M?y? includes eighteen gems, beautifully arranged and recorded specifically for the challenge of the short form. These are fully realized tunes, not just clips from the middle of some jam to be used on late night TV. The obvious touchstones here are Eno's On Land and Music For Films, but O'Sullivcan's touch on multiple instruments and knack for melody extend the music far beyond mere atmospherics. There are plenty of drifty segments, each rendered fully realized -- a timely reminder that a well-made drone or bit of ambience can set its spell in two or three minutes rather than thirty. In a beautiful jacket designed by O'Sullivan and Turner Prizenominee Mark Titchner."

MAIA, TIM Tim Maia (1977) LP
2020 repress. Vinilisssimo present the first vinyl reissue of Tim Maia's 1977 self-titled album. Tim Maia was born in 1942 in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro and started his musical career at an early age, along with close friends such as Roberto Carlos or Jorge Ben. Carlos would eventually help him to get a deal for his first single at CBS. During the '70s, Maia started to incorporate soul and funk elements into his style. After a two-year period involvement in the Cultura Racional in Brazil, Maia's funky style was still at its best when he released this album in 1977. It was his first and only recording for Som Livre, the legendary label that became extremely popular due to the many soap operas soundtracks in its extensive catalog. This self-titled LP deserves to be shortlisted among Maia's top records. It features killer tunes like the anthemic "É Necessário", undoubtedly one of the best songs in his career, and also boogie gems such as "Verão Carioca" or "Venha Dormir Em Casa" that show obvious influences by some of the biggest American soul artists of the time. It also contains intimate vocal delights as in the lovely smooth tune "Música Para Betinha" or even straight funky instrumentals like "Flores Belas". The string arrangements, wah-wah guitars, horns, deep vocals make this recording a milestone in the so-called "Black Movement" in Rio, where artists like Toni Tornado, Banda Black Rio and Maia himself were bringing in the funky sounds of America and mixing them with local rhythms like samba. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

Projects like Soul Divos or Aerolíneas Subterráneas showed that the union of rhymes with a funk band backing was not only possible but worked well. His solo projects: Al Volverte Hay Un Perro Detrás y Balas Perdidas, always maintained a high quality of exploration within the grooves, without forgetting his most old school look with the project of Hombres Bala accompanied by Sr. Zambrana and Weleló.

SATOH, SOMEI Emerald Tablet / Echoes LP
WRWTFWW Records announce the full official reissue of two major works from the great Somei Satoh gathered into one LP: the mystic and meditative Emerald Tablet (1978) and Echoes (1981). Sourced from original masters and available on vinyl with liner notes by passionate Japanese music connoisseur/collector/critic/DJ, Masaaki Hara. Fall into the ambient vastness, let yourself go... Originally released by highly respected label ALM, these pivotal pieces of late '70s/early '80s Japanese experimental music majestically showcase Satoh's intuitive approach to composition and mastery of creating infinite worlds of sound from very, very little. Emerald Tablet, recorded at the fabled NHK Studio of Electronic Music in 1978, is a spellbinding take on musique concrète meets tape music relying solely on sound harmonics from tubular bell, cymbals, and "kin" (Buddhist standing bell) overdubbed endlessly, voyaging into vertiginous sonic depths. Echoes was composed for the Mist, Sound, and Light Festival, a ten-day event organized by the hot spring tourist association of Kawaji, Tochigi Prefecture, held on May 20-29, 1981. It was played in the Kawaji hot spring's Ojika river valley, with 8 gigantic loudspeakers set up on hills surrounding the stream and connected to an octuple channel-tape system -- thanks to a combined length of cables exceeding one kilometer -- while artificial fog rose from a ravine and laser beams shot up on the mountains. Cinematic and resonating, this breathtaking piece from Somei Satoh is a transcending sonic experience. Emerald Tablet / Echoes is reissued in conjunction with Somei Satoh's Mandala Trilogy + 1 double-LP (WRWTFWW 055LP).

WRWTFWW Records announce the official reissue of Richard Band's soundtrack for horror fantasy classic Troll (1986). The infamous Troll score is its very own kind of monster: an extended five-movement symphony conducted by Richard Band in full sorcery mode, creating exhilarating moments of excitement and seat-gripping intensity. At the center of the magnum opus lies the incredible "Cantos Profanae" and its chorus sung in a mix of old English, Gaelic, and Latin -- an irresistible magic rhythm, an anthem of fantasy, a true cult classic. Richard Band often cites Troll as one of his favorite works -- no wonder, it's absolutely amazing. This is released in conjunction with the soundtracks of Empire Pictures' Ghoulies (WRWTFWW 047CD/LTD) and TerrorVision (WRWTFWW 046LTD), also out on WRWTFWW Records. Established by producer and director Charles Band in 1983, Empire Pictures quickly became notorious for the horror-comedy classics made during its brief but legendary lifespan. WRWTFWW Records announces the official reissue of Richard Band's director's cut soundtrack for sci-fi horror comedy classic, TerrorVision (1986). People of Earth Your planet is about to be destroyed... We're terribly sorry for the inconvenience. Conceived as a late 1960s Lost in Space type score with an '80s electronic twist, TerrorVision is one of the most unique soundtracks in Richard Band's discography. Part oddball adventure, part eerie soundscape, it mixes the fun and flashy colors of the era with synth explorations that flirt with minimalism and experimental music. Band composed with a Yamaha CS70 plus twin ARP 2800s, a mini Moog synthesizer, as well as DX5 and DX7 keyboards, creating a groovy twilight zone of electrifying alien funk. The soundtrack also includes five numbers by deliriously wild LA band The Fibonaccis. One of a kind -- like the movie itself! SATOH, SOMEI Mandala Trilogy + 1 2LP

Sourced from original masters and available on double vinyl in heavy 350gsm sleeve with liner notes by passionate Japanese music connoisseur/collector/critic/DJ, Masaaki Hara. Deep deep deep into the abyss... The Mandala Trilogy blends Somei Satoh's own slowed down Buddhist chant vocalization and early electronics to create a radiant and meditative atmosphere conveying serenity and timelessness. It includes three pieces recorded separately. "Mandala" was recorded at the NHK Studio of Electronic Music in 1982 and was included on the album Mandala/Sumeru, released on Kojima Recordings' ALM. "Mantra" was an NHK commissioned work, recorded at the same studio in 1986. "Tantra" was recorded at Victoria University of Wellington's Lilburn Studios for electronic music and recording in 1990. Included as a bonus is the 20-minute "Mai", a composition commissioned by harpist Ayako Shinozaki and recorded at the Kioi Hall in Tokyo on November 11th, 2004. The piece was conducted by Tetsuji Honna and performed by the Kioi Sinfonietta Tokyo. Satoh says: "The harp is one of my favorite instruments. Also, by combining my affectionate percussion instrument, the chromatic gong and steel drum, with the harp's most beautiful tone, I attempted to bring out a mystical sound." Although it is not an electronic music piece, the stunning composition elegantly complements the deep mystical world that Satoh expresses in his Mandala Trilogy. The sounds of funk and soul mixed with jazz, influences from Brazil, Africa, Europe, and all over the globe, textures of instrumental sounds and voices fuse to create the much-loved "jazz fusion" sound. Here we are in 2020 when interest in all forms of jazz is growing fast as DJ pioneers such as Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge, Perry Louis, Snowboy, Nick Hosier, Alan McKinnon, Jim Bernardi, Kev Beadle, Harv Nagi, Shuya Okino, and David Patterson continue to push all aspects of jazz to converted and new audiences. So, to this compilation where Curtis showcases unreleased material and offers tracks up for the first time ever on CD or vinyl. The track listing covers Curtis's addiction to dancefloor jazz, coupled with his passion for vocal and percussive jazz, with his usual trademark Latin touches. Features Paoli Mejias, Leslie Lewis & Gerard Hagen Trio, Curtis Lundy, 8VB, Marita Albán Juárez Quartet, JD Walter, Steven Kroon, Hajime Yoshizawa, Navasha Daya, Raffaela Renzulli Ensemble, Carmen Lundy, Tino Gonzales, Grady Tate, and Jam Session Goes Latino.
