KELLY, MICHAEL PATRICK Motian In Motion DVD
"Motian In Motion is a documentary film about legendary jazz drummer Paul Motian. Filmmaker Michael Patrick Kelly first met Paul Motian while shooting a short documentary about his neighborhood on Manhattan's Upper West Side called Duke Ellington Boulevard. Intrigued by Mr. Motian's illustrious but at that point somewhat unheralded musical career, Michael immediately suggested that they collaborate on a documentary about Mr. Motian. At that point Michael filmed two sets of Paul's 'Electric Be Bop Band' at the world-famous Birdland jazz club in NYC. The filming of the Birdland show began what has become a unique and unprecedented look into Paul's world from recording sessions and live gigs, to jogging with Paul in New York's Central Park. Motian In Motion unfolds via taxicab and subway rides allowing Michael to capture rare footage of Paul playing at the world-renowned Village Vanguard and other venues. The film centers around cab rides and a master-class that Paul gave at The Julliard School. Allowing the film to illuminate the genius that was Paul Motian. in 2010 and Paul was able to see the beginning of the editing process. Shortly thereafter Paul was diagnosed myelodysplastic syndrome, a blood and bone-marrow disorder. This tragic and terrible news did not slow Paul down and he continued to record and play live gigs up to eight weeks before he passed in November of 2011. After Paul's passing, Kelly found it hard to look at the material until mid-2015 when he began to review the rough-cut and all the material. Astounded by what he saw Michael reached out to Paul's long time collaborators Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano who were eager to be re-interviewed and to help in any way to bring the story of Paul Motian and his music to a wider audience."

VOIGT, WOLFGANG Ruckverzauberung Exhibition 2LP
Limited restock. Long-time Astral Industries associate Wolfgang Voigt returns to the London label with his next album, Rückverzaberung Exhibition. The Exhibition reimagines the concept with renewed purpose, opening the gates to deliver an arresting 60-minute journey into the underworld. Dense soundscapes mutate with alchemic fluidity, unravelling with vast symphonic counterpoints and synesthetic textures. Intoxicating in its Mephistolean dissonances and ambitious sonic structure, the sprawling Rückverzauberung itself becomes a nebulous organism shrouded in the seeping mist of the unknown.

RUSSELL, ARTHUR Another Thought CD
Another Thought was the first collection of Arthur Russell's music to be released after his death in 1992. Released on CD by Point Music in 1993 it marked the beginning of nearly 30 years of work to let the world hear the enormous archive of unreleased recordings Arthur left behind. Be With Records revisits this first compilation. This is the only place where you can hear some of Arthur's most recognizable music, like the title track "Another Thought", "A Little Lost", "This Is How We Walk On The Moon", "Keeping Up" and the woozy disco of "In The Light Of The Miracle" and "My Tiger, My Timing". Though technically a compilation, the whole of Another Thought comes together as a consistent, coherent, wonderful album. Janette Beckman reproduced her iconic photograph of Arthur in his newspaper boat hat for the sleeve. Tom Lee gave permission to include his liner notes from the original CD booklet, together with Arthur's lyrics. Another Thought is absolutely essential for even the most casual Arthur Russell collection. In fact, it's essential for any fan of non-obvious pop music. CD version comes in triple-fold digipack with insert and original liner notes.

MIGHTY SOULMATES, THE The Mighty Soulmates 12"
The Mighty Soulmates is a towering early '90s project from the legitimate super group of André Cymone (bass player with Prince), St. Paul Peterson (keyboard player in The Time and lead singer in Prince's group The Family), Mic Murphy (of Sass and The System fame) and Gardner Cole (writer, producer and musician probably best known for his work with Madonna). The sound is a majestic blend of sophisticated funk, emotional R&B, new jack swing flava and slick deep soul. These should-be legendary sessions have been almost a secret since they were recorded back in 1993. From all the tracks Mic sent over, Be With Records cherry picked the absolute cream for a tight four-track EP. A mixture of beat ballads and up-tempo non-hits, coming on like Al B Sure! or Babyface take on Shalamar or even The Purple One. The feel-good dancefloor dynamite of "I Wanna Be The One" is the explosive opening track. A piano-driven, groove-laden blast of yearning deep-pop, with perfectly delivered soulful vocals and an unmistakable "early '90s" sound. Indeed, fans of Eddie Chacon's old group will dig this for days. "Back In The Day" has a timeless swing and swagger, the lyrics reminiscing about the halcyon street life of the Soulmates' youth, about Curtis, Superfly and innocent days gone by, about hustling with friends. Yet more spine-tingling vocals over yet another perfectly produced musical backdrop. "Blue Tuesday" is the thrilling pinnacle of the EP, at least for us. It's absolute soulful-pop perfection. A soaring beat ballad full of chiming guitars, gorgeous harmonizing, falsetto backing vocals and a real steppers' groove. Dramatic, purple-hued closer "Private Time" seems to predict the Timbaland-dominated sound of the mid-to-late '90s, all synthetic strings and squelchy, acidic-drum-machine soul. This EP represents the sound of four incredibly soulful, talented, and influential (soul)mates jamming together over one long hot summer and weaving pure sonic magic.

BEAUPAIN, ALEX Love On The Beat LP
LP version. Built around the successes of his soundtracks and songs for the movies of Christophe Honoré, Alex Beaupain's profile in the "chanson française" landscape is quite unique. Beaupain alternates between soundtracks, songs he writes for others (mainly great French actresses) and his own solo albums. In March 2021, Beaupain paid tribute to the late Serge Gainsbourg for the 30th anniversary of his passing during a special live on-air event where he covered in full, with the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, Gainsbourg's penultimate shocking album from 1984: Love On The Beat. This experience led him directly in the studio with Saint DX as producer, the French-American duet Faux Real singing backing vocals and a full string section to re-record this cult album with a 2021 twist. He had also dreamed of covering that particular album that had so much impact on him, musically and lyrically, when he first discovered it. The '80s funky sound of the record, produced by Billy Rush, was a new start for Gainsbourg and at the time, the lyrics shocked everyone but achieved to avoid any censorship."I was 10 when Love On The Beat was released in 1984. Covering the full album was an idea I always kept somewhere in my mind as I was fully aware of the long-lasting impact this particular record had on all the teenagers at the time. This collection of songs is far from being the most covered or talked about works form Gainsbourg, but I've always had the feeling they were 'mine'. That everything started there for me and that, one day or the other, I would have to come back to it." --Alex Beaupain

PLAYIN' 4 THE CITY The Music & The Rhythm 1997-2003 3LP
It's been now 25 years that Olivier Portal has been Playin' 4 the City. Very versatile in the beginning, he has nurtured his productions while doing club residencies in Paris and Chicago, making his music all the more dancing and developing a very original touch drawing near to the sounds of Chi-Town and New Jersey. By the end of the '90s, he collaborated with many DJs and producers such as DJ Deep, Julien Jabre and Franck Roger among others, thus gaining a real credibility and much respect from the underground Parisian house scene and the world at large. The Music & The Rhythm 1997-2003 brings back to the forefront some of the most anthemic tracks reflecting a very creative period in which Olivier Portal hooked up with great vocalists and players to produce his own style of deep house rich in soulful vocals, jazzy harmonies, funky bass lines and his trademark keyboard layers. This triple-LP brings back to light some of the most emblematic tracks reflecting a very creative period during which Olivier Portal teamed up with excellent vocalists and instrumentalists to produce. This compilation offers the best of the Straight Up era with some great classics like the smooth "Music and the Rhythm", the seminal "More Than Ever" and crucial tracks like "The Shore" and "Deep Inside", also entitles us to retrieve very in demand gems like "Atmosfear's Vibe", "Spirits" and "My City Life" that now fetch hefty prices in the 12" market. Features Electra Weston, The Deep, Loic Gayot, DJ Mel Hammond, Mandel Turner, and Kearl The Voice. Edition of 500.

VA BIPPP: French Synth-Wave 1979/85 LP
2021 restock. Increasingly detached from the original punk formula, the modern and arty youth of the early '80s set itself to jettison an art form that had lost much of the nihilistic and exhilarating energy of its halcyon days, stuck, as it was, in an endless and noisy regression. Disheartened but eager to experiment and create, a new wave of French musicians followed the beacon of Jacno's seminal '79 hit "Rectangle," a visionary, digital coup de grâce, courtesy of a former punk which dealt the Rickenbacker and Fender-era a fatal blow. The cold and robot-like bips of analogic keyboards took over. Casio, Korg MS-10 and Arp Omni were the new paraphernalia of the new generation -- the ideal conveyers of its retro-futurist elegance and self-professed cold arrogance. They were pinnacles and symbols which were just as potent as the electric guitar in the '50s or the laptop in the '90s. This compilation recalls the glory of a selected few, the cream of the crop of the shooting stars and cult bands that followed in the footsteps of Kas Product, Mathematiques Modernes or Charles De Goal. Featuring Ruth's infinitely charming "Polaroid/Roman/Photo," plus A Trois Dan Les WC, Act, Les Visiteurs Du Soir, Vox Dei, TGV, CKC, Marie Möör, Deux, Vitor Hublot, Visible and Casino Music.

DIRTY SOUND SYSTEM Dirty French Psychedelics LP
2021 restock, originally released in 2009. Clovis Goux and Guillaume Sorge aka Dirty Sound System have been releasing selections of rare, little-known, and hard-to-find recordings which function somewhat like anti-playlists since 2003. Their compilations can be listened to from start to finish, the order of the tracklist is logical, and the selected songs lend themselves to repeated listening. After the series Dirty Diamonds, two compilations of Dirty Edits played by the world's most influential DJs, the creation of a regularly updated blog, Alainfinkielkrautrock (www.alainfinkielkrautrock.com), and a space disco CD that prefigures the general craze surrounding the genre, Dirty Sound System is back. On paper, Dirty French Psychedelics is a compilation for classic rock radio with names our parents would recognize. In reality, it is a hallucinated voyage through the land of French pop psychedelics to be listened to in one sitting, eyes half-open in the heat of the summer of 2009. Certain experts will tell you that Bernard Lavilliers and Brigitte Fontaine are not psychedelic, and they are probably right. Who cares? Dirty French Psychedelics is intended for fans of French pop from Serge Gainsbourg to Air, for people who want to discover or rediscover the music of the '70s, for those who want to listen to music without really paying attention and for those who want to listen attentively through their headphones. What happened in France at the beginning of the 1970s? The hippie venture terminated in a bloodbath in 1969 (a horrendous year: Altamont and the murder of Sharon Tate), heroin replaces LSD and the survivors aren't long for this world. 146 kids die in a nightclub fire in Saint-Laurent-du-Pont. De Gaulle in his bed: "Tragic ball at Colombey: 1 Dead". In primitive black and white, Jean Eustache's La maman et la putain buries a generation that lost its bearings (a possible definition of psychedelics). It is the same year as the oil price shock. The longest solar eclipse of the century (6 min 20 s) forecasts future oil slicks. God is dead, Marx suffers, a Maoist commando attacks a Fauchon grocer. Dirty French Psychedelics is a subjective vision of this disoriented period. Instead of the France of experiences (Gong, Alpes, Magma, and so forth), this compilation prefers the France of the freelancers (Dashiell Hedayat, Alain Kan), the master-singers (Christophe, Nino Ferrer, Brigitte Fontaine), the composers (Karl-Heinz Schäfer, François de Roubaix, Jean-Claude Vannier), the anomaly among "the variety" rather than the norm in "the margins." Other artists include: Cortex, Jean-Jacques Dexter, and Ilous & Decuyper.

LA FEMME Psycho Tropical Berlin 2LP
2021 repress. French indie-rock band La Femme is a conundrum -- an episodic band with various faces. La Femme was born during the X years in Biarritz, France, when Sasha and Marlon started composing music on their guitars and recording it onto Garage Band. Together they ride surfboards, pianos and synthesizers as they explore various styles from '60s yé-yé French pop to California surf music. Marlon moved to Paris, and there he met Sam, who played bass. Together, they formed SOS Mademoiselle along with Olivier Peynot, and played vintage French rock, as Sasha was practicing his scales in reverb surf band Les Redoutables. Sasha then joined his friends in Paris, where they discovered French cold wave and synth pop, Marie et les Garçons being one of their favorites. They polished a style that could be described as one of the following: surf-wave, bizarre-wave, strange-wave, weird-witch-wave, silly mental-wave or psycho-tropical Berlin. Joined in 2010 by drummer Noé and female singer Clémence. La Femme formed its first live roster in a few days and took shape that same year with its first anthem, "Sur la planche," a song that was made to be hummed and whistled while riding a surfboard. Later on, La Femme released their second EP, Paris 2012. Soon joined by fancy rhythm drummer Nunez Ritter von Merguez aka La Sauterelle and singer Clara Luciani, as well as a whole roster of female singers, they now present their debut album Psycho Tropical Berlin where rock, pop, rococo Bauhaus, as well as influences from Kraftwerk and Elli & Jacno conjoin just to please you. LA FEMME Mystere 2LP
2021 repress. French pop connoisseurs La Femme present Mystère. La Femme have made a huge mark on modern Paris's cultural landscape, with the two sides of the city - the glamour and the grit - ingrained in their music. Since the release of their debut album, Psycho Tropical Berlin (BORNBAD 051LP, 2013), their rise has only gained momentum with fans including directors Jacques Audiard and Romain Gavras to legends Jean Michel Jarre and Hedi Slimane. Returning with a more psychedelic sound and guest vocalists that slice through the starkest of electro beats, Mystère sees La Femme celebrating their wonderful city. From the chattering tête-à-tête heard on "Conversations Nocturnes" to the throbbing disco beat of "SSD", a direct reference to the pulsing nightlife hotspot and multi-cultural district Strasbourg Saint Denis where the band is based. Mystère's true intrigue however, lies in La Femme's enigmatic questioning of falling in and out of love. A compendium of short stories describing loves and losses, each song breaks down language barriers through an inventive and astute knack for melody. The elation of a passionate encounter is captured on the ricocheting electronics of "Tatiana", the melancholic acoustic guitar echoes in "Le Vide Est Ton Nouveau Prenom" and the sorrow of a war-torn couple in "Psyzook". Whether delicate or drenched in dirty disco, the impact of Clémence, Marlon and Sacha's gothic mantras mixed with the guest vocal talent of Clara Luciani, Jane Peynot, Naomi Greene, Mathilde Marlière, Angela Hureau, Battista Acquaviva and Sarah Ben Abdallah is perhaps where La Femme's true meaning can be found. Sacha on his band's all-inclusive philosophy: "We don't like the idea of having a leader or a chief: everyone brings to the band what they can and want." Recorded between a castle in Brittany and a Paris basement before being finished up with Sonny Diperri (Animal Collective) in LA, Mystère once again sees backgrounds blurred and worlds collide. The band's chic retro-futurist surf-pop sound possesses the same dose of glamorous punk stomp as before, but this time around it's layered with an elegant fusion of influences from Ennio Morricone, Marie Et Les Garcons's disco-rock touch and the lysergic romanticism of The Velvet Underground. Through increased use of strings and further exploration of sound, Mystère also incorporates the band's new love of oriental sounds, Turkish disco, Tuareg blues, medieval psychedelia to mainstays Brian Eno and Pink Floyd.

CHERRY, DON Music, Wisdom, Love 1969 LP
Limited restock. Reaching a near-mythical status amongst fans of free jazz's most worldly intrepid explorer, these seldom heard Paris soundtrack sessions known as Music, Wisdom, Love have evaded collectors' grasps and confused historians for exactly 50 years. Instigated in Paris in 1967 and filmed during Don Cherry's downtime on a visit to the Chat qui Pêche nightclub in March 1967, where he played with Karl Berger, Henri Texier, and Jacques Thollot, the bulk of this cinematic portrait was filmed on the streets of Paris under the direction of creative all-rounders Jean-Noël Delamarre and Nathalie Perrey, who, as their careers bloomed, would become pivotal figures in underground French cinema - straddling La Nouvelle Vague, adult entertainment, and cinema fantastique in what can only be described as speedball cinema. As the supportive creative family that primarily played home to French vampire/horrortica director Jean Rollin, both Nathalie and Jean-Noël, his brother Jean-Philippe Delamarre and a small team of other fans of oblique media would be responsible for a vibrant micro-culture that awkwardly flourished on the outskirts on the Parisian new wave - combining comic book culture, Lettrism, sexual liberation, psychedelic rock, graphic design, and, with this record as prime example, free jazz and avant-garde music. What previously might have been regarded as an unlikely coupling, with the benefit of half a century of archival hindsight, this release documents the essential cosmic collision of two fantastic planets. Available here for the first time ever and licensed from producer and director Jean-Noël Delamarre himself.

GURTLER & JAN MISERRE, JOHN A Pure Place (feat. Shackleton) LP
The original Soundtrack to Greek-German director Nikias Chryssos's new feature, A Pure Place, scored by John Gürtler, with his studio partner Jan Miserre, and featuring a track by chameleonic British artist Shackleton. The script for A Pure Place had a dizzying effect on John Gürtler and Jan Miserre; their minds reeling with the possibilities. From Persian sheep bells, Chinese sheng, prepared trombone, quarter-tone piano, a beaten-up cembalo, hand percussion, and a room full of synthesizers, embryonic compositions and experiments came to life early on in the project. An electro-acoustic extravaganza, the soundtrack for A Pure Place takes a deep bow towards the many magnificent composers and scores from the late '60s and '70s where orchestral arrangements met with tape loops, psychedelia, and instruments from across the globe. Listening to that era of film music, anything seems possible. The minimalist tones of "Ritual Bells" set the dial to weird in the opening sequence of the movie, whilst "The Island" makes use of ambient vocals recorded through an oil drum, gently introducing one of the score's main themes with a distant quarter-tone cembalo. Acclaimed British artist Shackleton's eerie original version of "Fust's Song" was a tonal keystone for the entire soundtrack. Gürtler and Miserre translated his psychedelic electronic blueprint, layering acoustic instruments and bottom-heavy percussion in their "Paradox Paradise" production style. The vocals, written by Chryssos, and sung by the cast on set, capture the sonics of the actual crypt-like space where cult leader Fust addresses with his following. "A Glimpse of the Other Side" speaks of love and death in a '70s-indebted composition reflecting John and Jan's shared love for melancholic and suspenseful chord progressions. Meanwhile, the sparkling synths of "Athens" -- the children discovering neon-lit civilization after years confined on the island -- transplant you to an entirely different era. Greek artist Maroulita del Kol features heavily throughout -- her choir of vocals on 'Erotica' were recorded late at night in the studio foyer, capturing its unique tiled reflections and concrete reverb. On "Purification" Maroulita's voice guides us alongside a Moog bass drone, building to an ecstatic climax, whilst she also features in the film's disco-centric ending credits on "Gatoula Mou Mikri".

POLKE, NATASCHA Stars Wrapped In Skin 2LP
The Definition:Music crew is more than happy to introduce a new member to their artist family with Natascha Polké. Backed by extensive studies in the UK metropolis of London, inspired by artists like Christian Löffler or Jan Blomqvist and drawing from her ever growing DJ and nightlife experience, which already saw Natascha Polké taking over slots at the famed Hive Club and other places, the Zurich-based artist developed a unique approach to what she describes as dreamy, melody-driven electronica. The title track and opener "Stars Wrapped In Skin" starts on a complex, melodically intricate level, combining warm, analog basslines and crystalline motifs for the dancefloor whilst Natascha Polké's tender and fragile vocals add a certain element of beauty, melancholia and masterly sculpted sonic poetry, no matter if this tune is hammered through a big club P.A. or played on late night radio. "I Don't Mind" indulges in deeply felt, most beauteous dancefloor melancholia and turns out to be one perfect closing tune for a long and ecstatic night out that's about to end way after the wee hours have passed. With "Neverland" you see Polké's love for the dancefloor and huge basslines manifest once again, this time fusing with cascading synth lines and hyper-harmonic arrangements. The subsequent "Neverland (Aparde Remix)" alters the original cut only slightly and takes the vibe to an even dreamier, more harmonic level. The second LP kicks off with "Burning Out", a spheric track where organic sounds meet disarmingly intimate vocals. A soundscape that keeps building and falling like gushing waves. Nostalgic call-and-response movements carry you into the unknown of our inner universe with an irresistible groove. "Wildfire" is a track with an atmosphere that lures you in and plays with your mind, teasing with enticing percussion and warped synths before making way for stunningly performed vocals. It fuses classic techno feel with contemporary aesthetics. Launching straight into the breakbeat percussion and uncompromising synth line, Defintion's remix of "Burning Out" enters the room like it's here to stay. The producer blends rough rawness with fragility, ties in thunder-like build-ups with intricate vocals and metallic synth stabs, harsh like blades. A remix that lives to be blasted in clubs and will easily demolish dance floors all over the world. The second remix stems from Night Talk. He's created a slow burner, a tune that keeps on building, where he skillfully controls the releases of energy, and places it exactly where and when it's needed. Gatefold sleeve.

KANAAN Windborne LP
2021 repress. Transparent orange vinyl. LP version. Windborne is the debut album from young Norwegian power-trio Kanaan. With components from jazz, fusion and post-rock they have created six extended pieces of blazing free-form psychedelia. While the band is rooted in the same spirit that gave birth to Mahavishnu Orchestra and Larry Coryell's The Eleventh House in the 1970s, there's a distinctive modern flavor to Kanaan. Their Scandinavian genealogy is apparent as well; their intricate song structures seems to be branching off the same stem as Motorpsycho, Papir, and Jaga Jazzist. Opening track "A. Hausenbecken" feels like a sudden blast of refreshing Nordic air, with rolling guitar leads and growling Fender Rhodes. But Kanaan aren't afraid to get deep and heavy; the B-side dives into straight-up Sabbath territory, with "Act Upon The Mundane World" and "The Groke", before ending the album with the abstract, free-flowing title track "Windborne".

DOOZER, THE Convalescence LP
"We are most pleased to present the seventh LP by The Doozer, now based in Edinburgh, but still creating a sound we feel has deep roots in Cambridge, England. is a somewhat sparser trip than his last album, 2018's Figurines (FTR 360LP), but the quality of the songs will be balm to those who have missed his presence. With gentle accompaniment from multi-instrumentalist Ben Kingsbury, Lance Whitehead and Eddie Goodban, the tracks here were recorded in Edinburgh in the summer of 2019, before the shit hit the fans, but some of the songs feel as though they were precipitated by a personal apocalypse, and I'm pretty sure that's something we can all empathize with at this point in the time/space continuum. The sense one gets is that the songs collected here are deigned to help us all rebuild that which has collapsed around us. This is not on infer that The Doozer has gone all instructional on us. One of the great features of his songs has always been their way of combining abstract confusion with observational clarity, allowing simple words to create abstract images. And that has not changed here. His brilliantly casual approach to this is what always makes people (like me anyway), think about his music in terms of extending the sweetest traditions of Syd Barrett and Nick Nicely. There is darkness built into this music, but it is countered with illumination. And if you so choose, you can spend many pleasant hours exploring the many mysterious corners of Convalescence. And that would be the right thing to do!" --Byron Coley, 2021

GERE, DON Werewolves On Wheels LP
2021 restock. B-movie junkies, gather round and prepare yourselves for what could only be described as a cinematic speedball. Take a combined hit of two of the most potent strains of toxic cinema, dress it up in ritualistic robes, and make it dance to the beat of a stoned, motoric, country commune soundtrack. Like an exploit-o double-bill where both films merge into a single feature, this directorial debut by an ex-Roger Corman protégé and future Russ Meyer art director (another heady cocktail) is the product of one writing duo's fleeting time in the driving seat as the moviedrome marathon approached its dwindling finish line. Werewolves On Wheels emerged in 1971 in a climate where the B-movie genre of the previous two decades began to make way for the early glimpses of imported slasher films and video nasties. Entirely out of popular context in 1971, the soundtrack music of Don Gere (Curt Boettcher, Kid Dynamite, Don & Stevie) would perhaps reveal him as the most versatile actor involved in the whole production. Until this point, Don Gere had been a pop folk songwriter and a country music devotee, but while riding with the werewolves, Don Gere became a disjointed psych rock stoner making ritualistic commune country with more coincidentally in common with Germany's emerging krautrock scene or the more localized stoner psych of Skip Spence (whose radically ahead of its time LP OAR (1969) was recognized by Columbia Records as their lowest selling record in the company's history). Imagine guitarist Sandy Bull jamming with Munich's Amon Düül or some Swedish prog outfits like Träd, Gräs Och Stenar or a sedated Kebnekaise. In comparison to the Curb Records/Davie Allan scores, for films like Wild Angels (1966), Devil's Angels (1967), Thunder Alley (1967), and Born Losers (1967) (often released on Curb's own Sidewalk or Tower Records), the new music made by Don Gere, only three years down the line, sounds like it's from an entirely different generation... "Pre-certified biker psych from the hillbilly Haxan. Amazing!" --Sean Canty (Demdike Stare)

WACHUNAS, TOM Spare Changes LP
"Tom Wachunas' Spare Changes is by far one of the best (and unknown/underappreciated) singer-songwriter records ever made. Classifying the album within a specific genre is a terribly difficult feat -- acid folk? folk rock? psychedelic? A true cornucopia of instrumentation -- sax, vibes, kalimba, tabla, guitars (including One St. Stephen guitarist Bruce Roberts), accordion(!) and highly introspective lyrics. Imagine being on a Caribbean cruise ship in 1975, and Neil Young happens to be croonin' with a 12-piece band on some new material that never saw the light of day. Recorded in Columbus, Ohio USA in 1975 at the now-defunct Owl Recording Studios, Spare Changes was actually Tom Wachunas's graduation project for his Masters in Fine Arts from The Ohio State University. Extremely rare -- only 1,000 copies of the original pressing were manufactured. Owl Recording Studio operated from 1973(ish) through 1977 under the direction of Tom Murphy, who would eventually go on to run the famous Track Record Studios in North Hollywood. Tom Murphy's blessing and involvement in sourcing the audio were essential in making this reissue happen."

It concludes a series of such LP masterworks such as Super Ape, War In Babylon, Police And Thieves, and Return Of The Super Ape. Enthrallingly, it crosses the sound world of Roast Fish Collie Weed & Cornbread with new hybrids -- like the irresistible 11-minute opener, rolling and delirious, a kind of reggae prophesy of Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing," but musically richer, and more glazed, randy and visionary. BAILEY, DEREK Lot 74 LP
2021 restock; Honest Jon's Records present a reissue of Derek Bailey's Lot 74, originally released by Incus in 1974. Recorded at a private house in West London, the side-long title track is a masterwork: a twenty-two-minute, starkly personal, freely expressive, itchily searching re-casting of orders of rhythm and sound into a new, quicksilver kind of affective and musical polyphony. Never mind the guitarist's championing of "non-idiomatic improvisation", the poet Peter Riley gets the ball rolling in his identification of the various hauntings of Bailey's playing at this time: "mandolins & balalaikas strumming in the distance, George Forby's banjo, Leadbelly's steel 12-string, koto, lute, classical guitar... and others quite outside the field of the plucked string." The five pieces on side two were recorded back home in Hackney around the same time -- with the exception of "Improvisation 104(b)", from the year before (and issued by Incus in its TAPS series of mini reel-to-reel tapes) -- opening with ventriloquized guitar feedback, and taking in some cod banter about colleagues like Mervyn Parker, Siegfried Brotzmann, and Harry Bentink. Crucial.

BAILEY, DEREK Aida 2LP
2021 restock. Continuing their ongoing series of reissues of music by Derek Bailey, Honest Jon's Records present a first vinyl reissue of Aida, originally released on the guitarist's own Incus label in 1980. Expanded for this release, the present version of this masterwork adds two hitherto unreleased gems recorded solo for Charles Fox's Radio 3 program Jazz in Britain, in the same few months of 1980 as the stunning original performances. The phrase "in the moment" is often bandied about with reference to free improvisation, and indeed there's no better way to describe Derek Bailey's playing. The acoustic guitar is notoriously lacking in natural reverberation -- notes barely hang in the air for a couple of seconds before they disappear -- which explains the almost non-stop flow of new material in these stellar performances. Bailey knew from one split-second to the next exactly where to find the same pitch on different strings, either as a stopped tone or a ringing harmonic, and there's never a note out of place. "He who kisses the joy as it flies," in the words of William Blake, "lives in eternity's sunrise" -- and this music is forever in the moment, constantly active but never gabby, kissing the joy. One of the special pleasures of the BBC set is the guitarist's own laconic commentary, a deliciously deadpan description of what he's doing while he's doing it. "I like to think of it -- as a kind of music" -- and the interaction between words and music is a particular delight. "You may have noticed a certain lack of variety," he quips, while unleashing a furiously complex volley. Is it a coincidence that the final seconds recall the famous cycling fifths of the coda to Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight"? Surely not; Bailey, like Monk, was a note man par excellence; they're both still alive and well in eternity's sunrise.

ARANDEL InBach Vol. 2 CD
Sharing his InBach album with the world in 2020 (IF 1056CD/LP) set events into motion that ultimately led to Arandel making second edition in the critically acclaimed, borderless project that unites rare instruments, musical re-imagination. Arandel unites once again behind the musical phrases of the Leipzig composer specialists of ancient and modern instruments (Thomas Bloch), modern synthesizers and Moogs, strings experts (Gaspar Claus), and the poetic spoken word of Myra Davies and Bridget St. John. The second InBach grew like a garden from the seeds of the first one -- an eclectic journey through melodic fantasies, intricate sound design and a certain pop silver lining. Some tracks were born out of Arandel's band performing on stage, experimenting with the songs live and composing them anew, like "Nos Contour", a new, French-lyrics version of "Bodyline" with Ornette, Arandel's stage partner. InBach Vol. 2 is a logical consequence then, of someone diving into a pool of music and history so large that it is being chronicled to this day. A substantial part of the instruments used on the lofty, eclectic album were recorded at the Musée de la Musique Paris: rare instruments like the Erard square piano, Ondioline, Zach's cello, Stroh violins. In the vein of rare instruments, the first guest musician Arandel approached for InBach was Thomas Bloch, who lends his gift to four tracks over the two albums, playing the Ondes Martenot, one of the first electronic musical instruments ever invented. Thomas has worked with many major artists in his career, like Radiohead, Gorillaz, Daft Punk. Freeing himself from the weighty shackles of expectation surrounding the classical maestro, Arandel goes for the core of every Bach piece he tackles, making them his own on "Octobre", based on "Air On G-String", from Orchestral Suite No. 3 D-dur, BWV 1068, his nephew tells a dreamlike story of an ominous gang of children, literally blossoming in the mud. "Fabula" -- featuring the French singer Scalde -- based on the melancholic, Christian lament "Meine Seele wartet auf den Herrn", becomes a grandiose, auto-tuned pop ballad featuring the virtuoso cello of fellow InFiné associate Gaspar Claus. The use of spoken word is another new layer to InBach, and acts a lyrical thread carrying the listener through In Bach Vol. 2: the closing track features Bridget St. John, John Peel-associated folk legend from the UK to offer to collaborate on a poem for this second volume.

PERNET, LEONIE Le Cirque de Consolation LP
LP version. Léonie Pernet's second album Le Cirque de Consolation, to be on InFiné and CryBaby, inhabits a world where borders dissolve and everyone makes their own unique and singular utopia. Hereby, the record questions the links between pop music, African cultures and electronic music, neo-classical music or the role of voice, whether human or synthetic. Sophomore albums can be a painful process for an artist. The sought-after whirlwind of French pop that exploded onto the scene with her debut Crave, Leonie Pernet returns with her second album, Le Circque de Consolation, a sort of double negative of her first. While the yearning that sat at the center of Crave might not have been resolved, the young multi-instrumentalist and singer has found a new perspective -- a more open and positive outlook on her own life and work. Perhaps telling, then, that the title was the first element of the album to exist: as it is and has always been a journey of personal (and collective) consolation first, a musical confrontation with the self. In line with her new-found "openness", Leonie invites another musician into her creative process for the first time on Le Cirque de Consolation: Jean Sylvain le Gouic, who lent his coproduction and perspective to her, while Leonie still plays almost all instruments herself with an astounding prowess. Leonie's voice oozes with a new-found self-confidence and takes center stage amidst eclectic, distinctively fun and open-minded production. Surrounding her astounding, intoxicating voice are forays into any direction imaginable: from harsh, experimental electronics to the more somber, organic and quiet moments -- and everywhere, there is the vision of Africa, (also Middle East) it's many sonic gifts and cultures. The French novelist and philosopher Édouard Glissant -- whose work and writing had a big influence on Pernet -- coined the term "Creolization". From "Hard Billy", a techno-influenced rebellious anthem, to "Les Chants de Maldoror", a club and dance song propelled forward by feverish derboukas, to the deeply moving "A Rebours" and its Afro-electronic rock. Léonie Pernet inhabits a world where borders dissolve and everyone makes their own unique and singular utopia. Hereby, the record questions the links between pop music, African cultures and electronic music ("Intérieur Négro"), neo-classical music ("Le Cirque de consolation", "Dandelion"), or the place of the voice, whether human or synthetic as in the atmospheric "Vowel".

KING TUBBY Hometown Hi-Fi Dubplate Specials 1975-1979 LP
2021 restock; LP version. King Tubby's Hometown Hi-Fi was one the great sound systems in Jamaica. It also proved a fantastic outlet for the Dub Plate Specials cut at Tubby's studio, providing exclusive cuts to be played out, enticing the dance's audience. The tracks at the time were mainly cut over producer Bunny "Striker" Lee rhythms, that Bunny stored at Tubby's studio which was in fact his home, 18 Drumilly Avenue in Kingston, Jamaica. The versions were given exclusive plays at Tubby's before some finding their way on to vinyl, as the B-side version cut to its A-side vocal, proving so popular, that the records were often bought for its version side over its vocal counterpart. King Tubby and Producer Bunny "Striker" Lee are intertwined in the birth of dub music. Tubby's vast knowledge of electronics and Bunny's vast catalog of rhythms would lay the foundations of what today is taken as a standard... the remix/version cuts to an existing vocal tune. Tubby and Striker were at Treasure Isle Studios one day while Ruddy from Spanish Town was working with the engineer Byron Smith. "Tubby and myself was talking when Ruddy was cutting some dub but Smithy (engineer) made a mistake and forgot to put in the voice. It was a two-track recording in those days. Ruddy said 'No Man! Make it stay!' And so they cut the rhythm. When I went over to Ruddy's that Saturday night a dance was in progress and when they played the vocal to the tune... then he said we're going to play 'Part Two.' They never called it 'Version.' And then he played the rhythm track. The song was a catchy song and everybody started to sing along and the deejay started to toast so everything went down well. On Monday morning I went up and I said 'Tubbs the mistake we made was a serious joke. It mash up Spanish Town!' The people went wild. So you have to start to do that now 'cause when the man put on the 'Part Two' everyone started singing this song. It played about 20 times. I said you try Tubbs!' Well the next Saturday night now when Tubby strung up down the farm U Roy said he's going to play 'Part Two' but Tubby did it different now. He started with the voice then dropped it out and let the rhythm run and then he brought in the voice in the middle and from there Tubby started to get really popular.'' --Bunny "Striker" Lee. Dynamic Sounds upgraded to 16-track recording in 1972 and Tubby purchased, again with the help of a deal brokered by Bunny Lee, the old 4-track equipment and the MCI console from their Studio B. The four tracks now gave him far wider scope to work with and he began to create a new musical form where the bass and drum parts were brought up while the faders allowed Tubby to ease the vocal and rhythm in and out of the mix. Jamaican Recordings has compiled a selection of cuts that were all tried and tested on Tubby's hometown hi-fi sound system and worked a great set of Bunny Lee's rhythms in fine style. All killer no filler.

2021 reprint. "Madlib and Freddie Gibbs offer a limited edition cassette version of their lauded Piñata for those with tape-deck only buckets. Freddie Gibbs is the product of violent, drug-laden streets. But unlike most rappers with similar resumes, he brings the block to the booth without inhibition or an exaggerated rap persona. Piñata, a 17 track collaboration with producer Madlib, is the best distillation yet of his transparent approach to making music, combining an at times stark honesty with electrifying talent as a lyricist and performer. Piñata is 'a gangster Blaxploitation film on wax,' says Gibbs, who came up on the streets of Gary, Indiana, the disregarded city known for producing Michael Jackson. Here he is joined by Mac Miller, Earl Sweatshirt, Raekwon, Scarface, Domo Genesis, Ab-Soul and a host of others in setting his soliloquies of the streets alongside film snippets and dusted funk, soul and prog musical tapestries. While this is the latest in a series of single-artist collaborations for Madlib, after Jaylib (J Dilla), Madvillainy (MF Doom) and the street-centric O.J. Simpson with Detroit's Guilty Simpson, the pairing is unique as it is the first time for Gibbs working with just one producer."

Its narrative is inspired by cinematic visual techniques and static images portraying scientific events which also inspired the titles of the nine compositions. The music possesses a dilated rhythmic base contributing to the images of gravity and spatiality. At points static is used with an ornate, delicate intricacy. Initially travelling with the aim of gaining perspective as a musician and to discover a new world of music first hand, Huw found himself humbled by such a welcoming community of artists, mostly belonging to the celebrated Suso and Kuyateh griot families. The tracks are composed entirely from original source material, field recordings, and Huw's talents as a multi-instrumentalist; performing tuned percussion from the region including the Mandinka balafon, kutiringding drum, as well as drawing on his skill as a professional upright/electric bassist. The music produced has a contemporary electronic sound, whilst still paying homage to a traditional Gambian aesthetic. Keira (meaning "peace") guides the listener through Huw's journey up the River Gambia, being welcomed into remote dusty villages, where your people are the most important thing in life.

VA Saigon Rock & Soul: Vietnamese Classic Tracks 1968-1974 CD
2021 repress. The long-awaited foray into the Vietnamese rock, pop and soul sound of the late 1960s and early 1970s is finally here. Saigon Rock & Soul delivers the goods international retro collectors have been searching for in vain for many years -- and it delivers beyond belief. Every song is a mini-masterpiece, be it heavy acid-rock psychedelia, horn- and guitar-drenched funk grooves, or gripping soul ballads reflective of life during wartime. The tracks that form this collection cut a window into a rich musical Vietnamese music scene that has long been obscured, and for the most part, forgotten. As the scope of electrified Vietnamese music from the 1960s and 1970s begins to be revealed, it becomes evident that this was among the heaviest and most eclectic musical scenes of Southeast Asia at the time. These songs tell of war, love and what war does to love. All of them were recorded in makeshift studios and even U.S. army facilities while the Vietnam War raged -- and were issued by a handful of Saigon record companies on vinyl 45s and reel or cassette tapes. Westernized forms of music in Vietnam had appeared during the latter 19th century, and especially during the early 20th century, under the influence of the French colonizers. Tan Nhac (trans. "modern music") always incorporated both domestic and international sounds, and continued to develop alongside Western musical trends. During the 1960s and 1970s, pulp ballads were being recorded by leading crooners of the time who alternated between modern and traditional forms of regional music. When the electric guitar hit the streets of Saigon, Vietnamese renditions of contemporary instrumental trends such as surf-rock, beat and twist soon emerged, followed by some pretty deep soul sounds inspired by Motown radio hits as well as funk grooves brought on by James Brown and his contemporaries. By the mid-1960s, Vietnam had been ravaged by war for years. American G.I.s had become a standard fixture in Saigon, as did many of the cultural artifacts they brought with them. This certainly included the music. The sounds of rock and roll dominated the radio waves, and Saigon nightclubs were teeming with new sounds. Musically, The Shadows and The Ventures soon gave way to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones as an enthusiastic set of young Vietnamese rockers signed on to the lifestyle, always eager to hear the latest musical trends the G.I.s would bring in on LP or tape. This era saw the birth of a vibrant rock scene, yet rock music and anything that came close was commonly referred to as "soul" in the Vietnamese genre-listings. Like many cultures in Asia, Vietnamese music is recorded, marketed, listened to and disposed of in a relatively quick manner. This level of advanced ephemera ensures a degree of difficulty when trying to unearth and discover cultural histories. Literally, most of the music heard here has been brought back from the dead. Artists featured include some of Vietnam's most popular at the time: Elvis Phuong, Hung Cuong, Mai Lei Huyen, Le Thu, Thai Thanh, Giao Linh, Mai Lei Huyen and the CBC Band. Features 70 minutes of classic original recordings compiled by Mark Gergis with extensive liner notes.

GLAXO BABIES Put Me on the Guest List CD
2021 reprint. "Glaxo Babies are the greatest UK post-punk band you've never heard. Formed in Bristol in late 1977 and named after the British pharmaceutical giant who allegedly inoculated thousands with a toxic vaccine, the original lineup included Rob Chapman (vocals), Dan Catsis (guitar), Tom Nichols (bass) and Geoff Alsopp (drums). The band's pioneering mix of metallic guitar, dubbed-out rhythms and shamanistic chants found its way into the bloodlines of generations on both sides of the pond. Naturally, Glaxo members later joined The Pop Group and Maximum Joy. Originally released on Heartbeat Records in 1980, Put Me on the Guest List collects the band's propulsive demos, mostly performed live in the studio with no overdubs and not originally intended for release. 'This Is Your Life' is a veritable classic, with Chapman's angst-ridden lyrics soaring low as the band rides tense, sinuous grooves. The skittish 'Police State' stands toe-to-toe with the art-punk flag-bearers in the North (Gang of Four, Mekons) and in London (Wire, The Homosexuals). 'Stay Awake' is a vitriolic screed as powerful as anything from the newly formed Public Image Limited. By the time England's post-punk scene was in full bloom, dominating the pop charts in the UK and college radio in the US, Glaxo Babies had unfortunately dissolved. Released domestically for the first time ever courtesy of Superior Viaduct, Put Me on the Guest List is available on vinyl and CD with liner notes by Chapman. The CD version contains three bonus songs including the rare 'Christine Keeler' single."

GLAXO BABIES Nine Months to the Disco CD
2021 reprint. "After the abrupt departure of singer Rob Chapman, Bristol's Glaxo Babies moved into more improvised and electronic-based territory. Their early demos only hinted at such exotic sounds. Other bands from Manchester and New York were spiking post-punk with dance beats, yet Glaxo Babies were brimming with fun and spontaneity, spearheading England's death disco movement in the process. Reportedly recorded in a single day, Nine Months to the Disco originally appeared on Heartbeat Records in 1980. Glaxo Babies' sole proper album veers between wiry electro à la Liquid Liquid ('Free Dem Cells'), piano-based free jazz burners ('Seven Days') and progressive post-Krautrock jams that would make even This Heat blush, culminating in the mutant funk masterpiece 'Shake (The Foundations)' (which was regularly covered by The Pop Group in their live set). Nine Months to the Disco is a monster statement, equal parts ballroom bangers and dancefloor clearers. Released domestically for the first time ever, with liner notes by The Pop Group founder Mark Stewart and band members Dan Catsis and Charlie Llewellin."

AVENGERS, THE The Avengers CD
2021 reprint. "In the late '70s, The Avengers established themselves as one of the US's preeminent punk bands. Fusing incisive guitar hooks, explosive rhythms and adolescent venom, the group forged some of the most in-your-face songs of the era. Their live shows were legendary, playing up and down the West Coast and even blowing Sex Pistols off the stage at the latter's final performance. As Byron Coley writes in the liner notes, 'Of the best bands of San Francisco's first wave in 1977, The Avengers were by far the coolest and youngest sounding. They roared without irony, as though this were indeed Year Zero (and, for a moment, it was), with history being overwritten by the new. The honesty of their belief was carried by their sound. And it was convincing!' Originally released in 1983, four years after the band's dissolution, The Avengers' self-titled LP is often referred to as 'The Pink Album' for its magenta-hued cover design. The Pink Album remains The Avengers' definitive statement -- collecting their classic Dangerhouse EP, sessions recorded with the Pistols' Steve Jones and a half-dozen revelatory demos. While much has been written about The Avengers in the past three decades, rock critic Greil Marcus puts it succinctly, 'The word I always come back to is mystical, and that remains almost theirs alone.'"

PIN GROUP Go To Town 12"
2021 repress. "New Zealand's Pin Group emerged out of the early '80s Christchurch scene and, with just two stunning singles and one brilliant five-song EP, have become an archetype for nearly all indie bands ever since. Ambivalence was not only The Pin Group's hypnotic debut, but also the very first release on Flying Nun. While guitarist Roy Montgomery, bassist Ross Humphries and drummer Peter Stapleton build off each other's jittery riffs, Montgomery's uncanny baritone pierces the torrential clangor. Conjuring both Wire's Chairs Missing and VU's White Light/White Heat, the band captures a truly unique sound -- evocative, yet austere. Wasting little time, The Pin Group released Coat in November 1981, merely two months after their first single. On the title track, Humphries' distant vocals call out as tense rhythms gradually push listeners over the edge. B-side track 'Jim' could easily have been recorded in Manchester circa 1979, but remains a master class in NZ post-punk atmospherics, menacing from start to finish. The Pin Group went back into the studio in January 1982 to record their third and final classic release. Featuring an expanded five-piece lineup with Mary Heney on guitar/vocals and Peter Fryer on viola, Go To Town is a work of taut perfection. Showcasing the band's dramatic chiaroscuro textures and arresting lyrics, 'Long Night' and 'When I Tell You' make staggeringly clear how much sonic ground The Pin Group covered in their unfortunately short tenure. These first-time standalone reissues, featuring Ronnie van Hout's original sleeve designs, are pressed on limited edition color vinyl. Now is the time to discover again the monochrome magnetism of this unparalleled and legendary band." Liner notes by Liz Harris. First-time reissue from legendary New Zealand band.

SCIENTIST In The Kingdom Of Dub LP
2021 repress. "Hopeton Brown, better known as Scientist, has been a pioneering figure in the world of dub for 40 years. His early love of electronics proved fruitful when (still a teenager) he was hired at King Tubby's studio in Kingston. Brown quickly ascended the ranks and became heir to Tubby's throne, producing imaginative and technically impressive mixes that solidified his forward-looking nickname. Originally released in 1981, In The Kingdom Of Dub remains one of the best early LPs in Scientist's long career. Produced by Roy Cousins at Channel One and featuring Sly and Robbie along with members of The Revolutionaries, The Aggrovators and The Soul Syndicate, the album offers a wide range of arresting rhythms, bold effect drops and exquisitely melodic bass. From '18 Drumalie Avenue Dub' (a reference to King Tubby's address) to 'Burning Sun Dub', Scientist lays down a veritable roadmap of dub -- filled with disintegrating echoes of satiny organ and textural guitar -- firmly cementing his place as one of the true innovators in Jamaican popular music."

SUBURBAN LAWNS Suburban Lawns LP
Repressed. "If your brain has a shortlist of bands that instantly evoke New Wave, Suburban Lawns deserve a slot right next to the likes of Devo, Talking Heads and the B-52's. After putting out two singles on their own Suburban Industrial imprint, the Lawns signed to I.R.S. Records and released their debut LP in 1981. While the band gained cult status thanks in part to a Jonathan Demme-produced music video which aired on Saturday Night Live, their self-titled album would sadly be the five-piece's only full-length statement. Suburban Lawns' asymmetrical aesthetic is personified by co-vocalist Su Tissue, whose mesmerizing stage persona was at once childlike and terrifying. Her unique style embodies the awkward/arty female singer of the Reagan era, while the group's male vocals -- courtesy of Frankie Ennui, Vex Billingsgate and John McBurney -- maintain the satirical themes of Southern California's postwar mirage of limitless sprawl. Suburban Lawns' catchiness can be attributed to their drum-tight performance and taut songwriting. Listen to the vocal trade-offs on 'Anything,' which could have easily come out on any purely punk label from LA at the time, while Tissue's deadpan delivery on 'Janitor' glides into the best art-warble this side of Lene Lovich, broaching the possibility of nuclear annihilation with a murmured 'Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom.' From a West Coast scene dominated by 7-inch singles and EPs, the Suburban Lawns' lone LP remains in a class with precious few. It's not surprising that they found acceptance in the Hollywood punk scene, despite their Long Beach roots, and would influence other bands such as Minutemen. This is not a disc that will get parked in your collection hoping to get pulled once in a while; this is a record you will play."

SAKAMOTO & DAVID TOOP, RYUICHI Garden of Shadows and Light LP
Restocked. Garden of Shadows and Light is the first collaboration between Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Toop, presenting the entirety of a concert performed in London in August 2018. With their collective musical experience encompassing collaborative work with figures as diverse as Evan Parker, Akiko Yano, Arto Lindsay and Christian Fennesz, in contexts ranging from pop session work to film scores to sound installation, no one could be sure how Sakamoto and Toop would approach their first concert together as a duo. From the opening moments, in which Sakamoto's delicate inside-piano work is paired with distant scrapes and moans from Toop's prepared lap steel guitar, it became immediately clear that a subtle, at times hushed, form of free improvisation is being practiced here, one in which space, pause and silence often take on heightened importance. The album's title takes inspiration from the aesthetics of Japanese gardening, and the spatial metaphor this suggests is apt, as listeners can imagine themselves wandering through a subtly changing environment, chancing on beautiful details and admiring them before moving on. You are led through a series of discrete moments, each uniquely shaded, whether by highly amplified small percussive sounds, austere electronic tones or the mournful tones of Toop's bass recorder. The course of the music follows a non-teleological drift, in which Sakamoto and Toop seem less concerned with establishing an overarching structure than in allowing each moment the space it needs to develop and breathe. When Sakamoto eventually turns to the piano's keyboard in the performance's second half, the music becomes lushly enveloping, as his jaggedly lyrical lines float against a backdrop of prepared guitar and field recordings. The music takes a radical, unexpected turn when Sakamoto picks up an electric guitar, with both players turning up the volume for a passage of distorted roar and shuddering feedback -- bracing evidence of the unfettered, exploratory approach shared by these two uncategorisable musicians, beautifully documented here.

BURGALAT, BERTRAND Reve Capital CD
Bertrand Burgalat's new album, Rêve Capital, will be released by Tricatel. How many of Burgalat's songs have accompanied difficult afternoons, happy evenings and lonely mornings? The list is long. And it gets longer with this album, each track of which widens the rift between the plates of space and time. Jean-Pierre Montal Burgalat makes crackle what Tricatel like most in his universe: the reality of things and their discrepancy, the intimate and the universal. Features versions by Yuksek.
