BLUE ANGEL LOUNGE, THE The Blue Angel Lounge CD
8MM Musik present a reissue of The Blue Angel Lounge's self-titled debut, originally released in 2008. The story of The Blue Angel Lounge began in the post-industrial town of Hagen in Western Germany in 2006 when Nils Ottensmeyer and Dennis "Mel" Melster, both with abundant talent and little to do, began sculpting soundscapes. The band recorded and self-released their debut, The Blue Angel Lounge in 2008, and shortly thereafter caught the attention of 8MM Musik in Berlin. The band took their name from the club in New York City that in the 1960s offered Nico (Velvet Underground) her first live performances in America. Nico would remain an underlying influence on the band. Initially a six-piece darkly psychedelic outfit, with their second album Narcotica (8MM 011CD/LP, 2015), they began subtly introducing post-punk elements to their melodic songwriting, and the intensity of Nils O's vocal began to come to the forefront. Strangers to the mainstream, but revered by a steadily expanding fanbase around the world, the band have earned the respect of other groups such as Interpol, The Dandy Warhols, and A Place To Bury Strangers and have been invited to support them on tour.

DE BABALON, CHRISTOPH Exquisite Angst LP
"If you're gonna go out, go out like a muthaf*cker". A Colourful Storm presents Exquisite Angst, a collection of Christoph de Babalon's most hardcore, abyssal and mutant creations of his haunting past. A blown-apart, mangled depiction of muck, grime and breakbeat-drone, its tracks parallel the timespan and isolated madness of the If You're Into It, I'm Out Of It (CFET 016LP, 2018) recording sessions. Bleeding, darkside breakcore/jungle reconstructions that draw no comparison; there's a reason why Thom Yorke plucked him to tour with Radiohead, only to never speak to him again. Includes the previously unreleased "Gaseous Invertebrate" and "Valediction". Full-color printed reverse card sleeve with poster-insert.

BYUL.ORG Nobody's Gold 2LP
The demons of night are out again: Seoul's one-stop shop creative collective Byul.org returns with its third international album, Nobody's Gold. Comprising 14 new songs, it's a dizzying, haunting affair that channels the group's manifold influences and references points (from post-punk to Stockhausen and back via club culture) and yet sounds intriguingly coherent. Moving in and out of the shadows, Nobody's Gold breaks forth as pure sonic landscape, a universe of its own, folding and unfolding into both more experimental patterns, yet also with occasional hooks and dark catchy structures, gracious build-ups flickering among the hazy roar and thunder. After the screak and squeal of "Lamb With A Wolf Mask," the foreboding sounds of "The Museum Of The Two Of Us" segue into a synthesized party tune about a missing friend being chased by police ("Nari Yuko Yin"), one of several vocal tracks with a sinister edge. Taking things up another notch, "Friendly Enemies" is probably the closest this group will ever get to creating a stadium-ready anthem. On the other end of the spectrum, "The Place Where Designers Go To Die" is a magnificent void with an immense and irresistible undertow. Never too jolly (not even while "Day Drinking At A Seaside Town" or during takeoff via epic pop tune "Bats We Are"), Nobody's Gold compiles soundscapes with a very tangible, corporeal presence. Inspired by everyday life, half-remembered drug/club experiences, Pascal Quignard's disturbing La Haine De La Musique (1996), Stockhausen and Bill Evans, Nobody's Gold sees the collective remain true to its DIY foundations while repeatedly questioning our listening habits and "the exaggerated love for the concept of love," as they put it. Founded around the dawn of the millennium as a group of poetry-loving friends who'd occasionally meet for drinks, Byul.org has long become an extremely prolific and versatile collective within Seoul's scene. Main song-writer TaeSang Cho and his mates Yu Hur, Jowall, YunYi Yi, SuhnJoo Yi, HyunJung Suh, and SoYoon Hwang went from publishing to recording, from releasing tunes to design, art direction and more. Although their list of clients includes Atelier Hermes and the Venice Biennale (they did the Korean Pavilion twice), the group still remains a drinking circle of close friends at its core: Pals who simply like to create and carouse and dream and live and perform and play tunes together.

SUNWATCHERS AND EUGENE CHADBOURNE 3 Characters 2LP
"Sunwatchers teamed up with Eugene Chadbourne for two days of recording in October 2016 which resulted in Sunwatchers And Eugene Chadbourne's 3 Characters. These sessions were dedicated exclusively to the music of the Minutemen, Doug Sahm and Henry Flynt. Having never played together before, all the songs were completed in one or two takes and the recordings reflect an urgency and immediacy that audiences have to come to expect from these musicians. The three characters invoked on these recordings offer models for our current political and societal struggles. Creating a music that is both personal and political, artistic and activist, these three figures were/are soulful and practical examples of the artist-as-laborer, addressing a call for social justice and musical spontaneity. Chadbourne and Sunwatchers have taken up this struggle, touring and recording, writing and collaborating, throughout their respective careers. Pushing this ethos out into the field and on this recording, 3 Characters is a reverential labor of love, where musical labor becomes a form of both love and resistance. Mike Watt joins the conversation with spoken interpretations of lyrics, poetry, speeches and assorted agit-prop. Having Watt's contemporary voice alongside so many songs that he wrote and defined suggests this, and all artistic collaborations, function as part of a long continuum that inform future callings."

VA Salm: Gaelic Psalms from the Hebrides of Scotland, Volume Two LP
Following a sold-out run of Salm, Vol. 1 (ALE 007LP, 2018) Arc Light Editions closes the year with a second volume of Gaelic psalm singing. The recordings documented here are from the same psalm singing sessions as the first, and both together represent a complete collection. This is music that is transcendent and together, about the individual and the earth, movingly spiritual with or without belief. The sound comes in great waves, swells of sound that break and roll around the space. The texture relies on the individuals: this is group singing where the individual is preserved, elevated, but together. The recordings of Gaelic psalm singing presented in the release are among the best ever captured. They document a living tradition, a form of religious singing from the Hebrides in Scotland, which is still practiced in Lewis. In Gaelic psalm singing, a precentor leads, and from here voices follow, moving together in great swells like the murmurations of birds. These recordings of Gaelic psalm singing were originally made over two evenings in the Back Free Church on the Isle of Lewis in October 2003. The singing was spontaneous and totally unrehearsed. The recordings are now presented on vinyl for the first time by Arc Light Editions. A precentor leads off with the first lines of a psalm, and the congregation follows, some faster than others, and each one remains discernible. In his notes to the original release, Calum Martin writes that the form, called precenting (where one person puts out the line and the congregation responds), while not exclusive to Gaelic free church traditions, is in Lewis particularly influenced by the pibroch style of free ornamentation. It's through this, he says, that the distinctive emotional swell of sound emerges. The sound relies on the congregation's individual responses to the melody and the individual precentor's leading. The musical term is free heterophony. Arc Light Editions has worked directly with DR Macdonald at the Bethesda Hospice and Calum Martin on this release, and they are to be thanked for their time. A portion of the profits from this release go directly to Bethesda Hospice, in accordance with the original release. Kraftliner sleeves printed in white litho, artwork by Jennifer Lucy Allan, and photography by James Ginzburg.

DISCRETE CIRCUIT & MARK BROOM MBDC 12"
UK techno heavyweight Mark Broom and Berlin's Discrete Circuit have teamed up before; MBDC is their first fully-fledged collaboration. The EP opens with a superbly engineered kick and counterpoint texture that allows for an otherworldly synth to slowly worm its way out of the abyss. Groovy, tooly, slightly dissonant; blips, claps, punctuation where it works. Just the right shade of reverb and modulation, push and pull in the arrangement, The final track is a remix by Astray's other in-house producer, H4L, a frenetic, broken, IDM-influenced belter with scattered and distorted 808s.

"Lost At Sea" employs a loosely-flowing organic drum groove, jazzy Rhodes chords and resonant moog style synth licks, while "Hip Swing" closes with up-tempo drums at the forefront whilst murky bass reverberations flow in the depths.

RAVITZ, JUDITH Bolerio LP
Be With Records presents a reissue of Judith Ravitz's Bolerio, originally issued in 1983. Galvanized by a passion for soul, jazz, funk, folk, and Brazilian samba, Bolerio brilliantly reimagines the music of the Brazilian legend Jorge Ben. Increasingly sought-after, housing as it does her seminal take on "Dia De Indio" -- often re-edited and sampled, bootlegged but never bettered -- Bolerio is a uniquely thrilling LP in its own right. In 1983, Ravitz discovered that Ben was touring Israel with his crack backing band A Banda Do Zé Pretinho. After joining her in the studio, the ensemble reinvented a selection of Ben's killer tracks that the band regularly performed. On Bolerio "come to Rio", Ravitz handed them equal billing as they aided a re-contextualization of Ben's music for an audience that was barely aware of him. These versions are by no means straight re-treads; far from it. The highlights are many and memorable; "Dia De Indio" is a strutting, electronic samba-funk with stabbing bass and fluid arrangements, sounding so current and fresh that it's hard to believe it's now 35 years old. Its vibrant ambience has been likened to the wiry dubbiness of King Sunny Ade's Synchro System; it's easy to see why. Indeed, the electro elements add a futuristic feel that the original could never comfortably possess. The album begins with a throbbing take on "Boiadeiro"; Ravitz flows wonderfully whilst the band introduce a heaviness and complexity absent from the original, as wild bass blends with an intensity to the guitar playing that's quite stunning. Ravitz's cover of "Taj Mahal" incorporates the lush Brazilian boogie of the time whilst "Santa Clara" is morphed into a deep electronic groove. Lent an airiness by this arrangement, the track benefits from Ravitz's exquisite range and floats by on a bed of warm keys to conjure a gorgeous melodic melancholy throughout. The timeless "Que Pena" gets an injection of warm Israeli funk that eschews the downbeat vibe of the original. The beautifully mournful piano and plaintive horns that grace "Que Maravilha", coupled with Ravitz's vocal phrasing of spine-tingling clarity, contribute a depth of feeling and longing that hit hard. The iconic artwork has been beautifully restored throughout, and the music has been remastered from the original tape transfers by Simon Francis. Edition of 500, 180 gram vinyl, includes printed inners. Carefully reproduced original art. Remastered from original tape transfers.

MOMENTS, THE On Top LP
Be With Records presents a reissue of The Moments' On Top, originally issued in 1971 and a perfect example of symphonic soul. Alongside contemporaneous acts from the early 70s -- The Chi-lites, The Stylistics, The Delfonics, The Futures, Blue Magic, and The Main Ingredient -- The Moments exuded all that was compelling about deep, harmony-drenched, string-laden soul. The standout here is "To You with Love", a floating, tender ballad sung by Harry Ray that features the group's patented handclap-tambourine combo, sweetly repetitive strings, serene guitar and gentle piano. It was famously sampled by J Dilla for "Last Donut Of The Night", the gut-wrenching finale to his seminal Donuts (2005). Concentrating solely on its sampled history would do The Moments a huge disservice, but its appearance at the climax of Donuts directed many soul fans to their work. Judged entirely on its merit, it's one of the most heart-breaking songs of any decade and worth the price of admission alone. If that wasn't enough, On Top also spawned two R&B hits: "All I Have" and "Lucky Me", each featuring Billy Brown's ice-melting falsetto. "All I Have" is a sumptuous introduction to the album, with melancholic, understated guitar licks, twinkling keys and heartbeat drums. The triumphant "Lucky Me" is simply gorgeous; all gentle chimes, swirling strings, and falsetto soaring atop proud horns. Also included are "I Can't Help It" and "That's How It Feels." The former features thundering kicks and crashing cymbals underneath flutes and stabbing strings and horns. The yearning vocals embody a Temptations-like delivery at times. "That's How It Feels" sees Brown's voice astride a bed of rhythms on a tune more aptly defined as a love suite than a song. Dripping in breakbeats, piano and strings, Brown describes the devastation of losing the one you love before the track brilliantly switches up with a sweeping string-led chorus and heavenly harmonies. The only genuine up-tempo number is "Sweeter As The Days Go By," led by Brown in his natural, gospel-inspired tenor. A charming but sorrow-filled "I Lost One Bird In The Hand" is an impressive, slow lamenter, with horns and strings dominating the lushly arranged backdrop. Appropriately, things end on a down-lifting note with "Candy Shack." The original analog tapes were remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis, and the memorable cover art was carefully reproduced. Edition of 500. Carefully reproduced original art. Remastered from original tape transfers.

WILSON, LARRY JON New Beginnings LP
Be With Records presents a reissue of Larry Jon Wilson's New Beginnings, originally released in 1975."Larry Jon Wilson? He can break your heart with a voice like a cannonball." --Kris KristoffersonLarry Jon Wilson came to the party late. When he arrived in Nashville, he had already spent ten years in corporate America. He did not start playing guitar until the age of 30, but five years later he released his debut, New Beginnings, following it with Let Me Sing My Song To You (BEWITH 053LP, 2018). A revelation among the hipsters and critics of Nashville, Larry Jon was immediately embraced as part of the mid-'70s "outlaw country movement" that eschewed slick production in favor of a raw, gritty approach. When a film crew came to document this burgeoning sound, they made straight for Larry Jon's door. He was a singer and writer of intensely private, painfully moving tales of southern life. With his deep, papa-bear voice, funky southern groove, and richly evocative narratives of rural Georgia, Larry Jon was a unique stylist but his gutsy, greasy sound did not translate into sales. Too funky for the country crowd, too heartfelt for pop radio, he fell between the cracks. New Beginnings and Let Me Sing My Song To You are so similar they play like two halves of a double album, showcasing his unique mix of country, folk, soul and swampy blues. Driven by a crack rhythm section that included Elvis guitarist Reggie Young, New Beginnings is a rich, literate record. Anyone with even a passing interest in the union between soul and country music will be able to tell they've located solid gold as soon as Larry Jon's deep baritone utters the first appreciative "mm-hmm" a few bars into the opening "Ohoopee River Bottomland", a fat-bottomed swamp-funk account of hard times in the city and country alike. Funny, nostalgic, sad, wistful, righteously pissed-off: New Beginnings is country-influenced American songwriting at its finest, from the feverish country-got-soul groove pulsating behind the weary sigh of "Through The Eyes of Children" to the elemental lament "Things Ain't What It Used to Be (and Probably Never Was)", a country standard that somehow got away. The audio comes from the original analog tape transfers and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. The same care has been taken with the striking cover art; Larry's close friend Jeb Loy Nichols contributed liner notes. Edition of 500. Carefully reproduced original art. Remastered from original tape transfers.

WILSON, LARRY JON Let Me Sing My Song To You LP
Be With Records presents a reissue of Larry Jon Wilson's Let Me Sing My Song To You, originally issued in 1976."Larry Jon Wilson? When he arrived in Nashville, he had already spent ten years in corporate America. He did not start playing guitar until the age of 30, but five years later he released his debut, New Beginnings (BEWITH 052LP, 2018) and followed it a year later with Let Me Sing My Song To You. Too funky for the country crowd, too heartfelt for pop radio, he fell between the cracks. New Beginnings and Let Me Sing My Song to You play like two halves of a double album, showcasing his unique mix of country, folk, soul and swampy blues. New Beginnings had failed to propel Larry Jon to even the modest cult acclaim enjoyed by his contemporaries; the frustration this conjured can be heard on Let Me Sing My Song To You. Both the title track and the self-deprecating "Drowning In The Mainstream" speak of Wilson's hope to inch a few steps towards the big time without making too many compromises. Any album containing the likes of the heartfelt, deeply beautiful tribute of "Ballad of Handy Mackey" and the superlative country-gothic funk opus "Sheldon Churchyard" -- the lead track from the lauded Country Got Soul (2003) compilation -- must rank as essential listening. The audio comes from the original analog tape transfers and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. The same care has been taken with the striking cover art and Larry's close friend Jeb Loy Nichols contributed wonderfully unique liner notes, presented beautifully on the printed inner sleeve opposite a gorgeous black and white shot of Larry, mid-performance. OTTE, HANS The Book Of Sounds 2LP
"This work, a masterpiece of restraint, reflects the musical imagination of someone who has spent long periods in the quiet recesses of the mind." --Terry RileyBeacon Sound present a reissue of Hans Otte's The Book Of Sounds (Das Buch Der Klänge) originally released in 1984. Hans Otte (1926-2007) was a multifaceted artist, poet, pianist, composer, and promoter who synthesized the strands of minimalism, Eastern spirituality, and radical art into his own unique and protean vision. In his younger years he studied under the composer Paul Hindemith and the pianist Walter Gieseking. From 1959 to 1984 he was the director of Radio Bremen and was instrumental in introducing artists such as John Cage, Terry Riley, and Steve Reich to European audiences. Although the compositions and recordings that Otte made over the course of his long career are wideranging, The Book Of Sounds is considered to be his masterwork. A solo piano piece, it was written between 1979 and 1982 after a major survey of his previous artistic output and should be viewed through the prism of his own self-development: both as a return to his roots and as a new beginning. It is a cyclical collection of 12 "chapters" that are inspired partly by John Cage's desire to get to the root of sound itself, to liberate it from the weight of expectation and tradition and to view all sound as a manifestation of nature. In a 1979 interview, Otte answered a question about whether his work had a "common core" by saying, "I would say that behind my artistic work, as an aim or hope, is the need to find myself. In other words: despite all the separating structures, the division of all the work, the ideologies, fixed ideas, systems, despite the state and everything that ceaselessly tries to separate and divide us, I fundamentally want to be complete." It might be tempting to assign The Book Of Sounds to the aesthetic of minimalism; however, it is a deceptively sophisticated collection of pieces that unfolds slowly over repeated listens with shifting harmonics and unusual structural touches that keep it firmly on the side of "avant-garde". Includes booklet with contemporary liner note contributions by Terry Riley, Inga Ahmels, and Dustin O'Halloran as well as a reprint of a 1982 Village Voice live review by Tom Johnson and photos taken by his daughter Silvia. First edition of 500.

PINHAS, RICHARD Chronolyse CD
Bureau B presents a reissue of Richard Pinhas's Chronolyse, originally released in 1978. Pinhas is one of the most important French electronic space-rock musicians. Following five albums with Heldon, his band, he released solo records from 1977 on. His transition to solo material gave the guitarist and synthesist an opportunity to work on material that was a little lighter and less constrained. Chronolyse was his second solo album. Following the previous year's Rhizosphere (BB 279CD/LP, 2018), 1978's Chronolyse was actually the first to be completed having been recorded two years prior. On four of its five tracks, Rhizosphere presents just the 25-year-old Pinhas and his synth alone together, a melding of man and machine that gradually becomes an expansive, outward-bound journey. Pinhas's simple approach spawned a galaxy of diverse sounds and ideas. Each track on Rhizosphere inhabits its own mini-universe sonically and emotionally. The range of moods traversed is stunning. Dedicated "to all S.F. freaks", Chronolyse takes its name from a work by the science fiction writer Michel Jeury. The individual track titles, as any sci-fi fan will clock, are inspired by the classic Frank Herbert novel Dune (1965). This led some listeners to assume that Chronolyse was some kind of scrupulous concept album based around Herbert's invented universe of interstellar feudal houses and giant sandworms. That's not quite accurate. While Pinhas remains a proud sci-fi freak, he's quick to distance the album's titles from the music contained therein. "I always name the titles of the tracks and albums when everything is finished," he says. "So there is no relationship between them and what is inside." The younger Pinhas had been inspired by guitar heroes such as Hendrix and Clapton. It was King Crimson's Robert Fripp who had prime impact on Heldon's mix of spiralling space-rock guitar and analog electronics. Indeed, Pinhas once said the three most important figures in the history of modern music were Richard Wagner, Béla Bartók, and Robert Fripp. At the time of Chronolyse's gestation, Pinhas had been listening to a lot of classical music. Bach, Scarlatti, and Wagner were key. So, too were the new wave of American minimalist composers, Philip Glass in particular. The final record of Heldon's 1974 to 1979 run of LPs would appear the year after Chronolyse; thereafter Pinhas would concentrate on projects under his own name. This vital release bridges the gap between these two phases of Pinhas' remarkable career.

PINHAS, RICHARD East West CD
Bureau B presents a reissue of Richard Pinhas's East West, originally issued in 1980. The fourth solo album by French spacerock mastermind Pinhas, East West was his first and only album to be released by a major label (CBS). Some say it is his most commercial but Pinhas doesn't see it that way. "Signing to CBS was a blessing. It gave me the tools for better production. At that time, some big companies were better and more honest than the so-called underground labels. Besides, I don't see any virtue in remaining underground. You try to do what's best for the music at each moment in your life. Always." reflects Pinhas. Even so, East West contained some surprises for those who were used to Heldon's extended jams or the sparse and moody atmosphere of Iceland (1979). East West's average track length is four minutes, indicating greater accessibility. It also has a David Bowie cover, although Pinhas naturally chose one of his more avant-garde moments, the foreboding "Sense Of Doubt" from Heroes. (1977). Despite having "gone solo", Pinhas remained a serial collaborator. The intense and frantic opener, "Houston 69: The Crash Landing (Part 1)", features his old Heldon colleagues Didier Batard, François Auger, and Patrick Gauthier. The robotic vocals were supplied by writer Norman Spinrad from whose novel, The Iron Dream (1972), Heldon had lifted their name. East West's synth-centric tracks resemble siblings to the groundbreaking work of Kraftwerk. Others, like the dreamy "XXXXX: La Ville Sans Nom" or longest track, "Paris: Beautiful May", showed Pinhas hadn't lost enthusiasm for fusing the revolutionary sound of the synthesizer with his impressive talents as a meditative and expressive guitarist. Certain songs evoke Brian Eno or Tangerine Dream but hold their own distinct flavor, anticipating much later ambient practitioners such as Mountains or Emeralds. Besides the relatively succinct running times, it's "New York: West Side" that takes most responsibility for East West having been categorized as Pinhas' "most commercial" work, another view which its maker defies. "I don't know why people say it's the most structured or commercial," he reflects. "I wanted to do this album in the way I did it. In terms of commerciality, I don't work with those kinds of concepts." East West hardly represents Pinhas' shift from abstract composer to pop artist but offers a sublime showcase for the diversity of Pinhas' powers, all delivered in handy bite-sized chunks.

JACKSON, REVEREND CHARLIE God's Got It: The Legendary Booker and Jackson Singles (2018 Edition) CD
"The CaseQuarter label launched with this auspicious collection of '70s vintage gospel singles in 2003, while Reverend Charlie Jackson was still here with us. Jackson sadly passed in 2006, and the CD has been out of print for too long now. This re-mastered and re-sequenced 2018 edition of the highly acclaimed collection features new, exceptionally high-resolution vinyl transfers and includes an additional since-discovered Booker single (both sides!) Ever since Reverend Charlie Jackson's Booker singles were discovered by gospel collectors in the early 1970s and began to trickle out to a wider audience, Charlie Jackson's primal, funky guitar riffs have astounded listeners. Raw and unadorned and at other times spare and lyrical, his Booker and Jackson label recordings are infused with sanctified energy and singing. Further to his own singles here are records by Brother Ike Gordon, Sister Frances Jackson, Caravan No. 2 of Zachary, and Laura Davis, which feature Reverend Jackson as accompanist. Until this album's initial 2003 release, these records had never been collected together and had never been issued on CD. Following its original highly acclaimed release, Rev. Jackson's songs were covered by The Black Crowes, Old Crow Medicine Show and Hank Williams Jr. This updated 20-song set also includes a 16-page booklet with rare photos, discography, and extensive liner notes covering Reverend Jackson's life and career."

FALL, THE 58 Golden Greats 3CD BOX
"The expanded 3-CD follow up to the iconic now out of print 50,000 Fall Fans Can't be Wrong compilation, now features songs right up to the groups last album. Compiled and annotated by long time Fall aficionado Daryl Easlea from across all the labels the band has appeared on. The booklet designed by long time Fall designer Becky Stewart contains a track by track overview. Mastered by Andy Pearce from the best sources available. Formed in Manchester in 1976, Fall were a seminal English post-punk group. The group existed in some form from that point on, built around its founder and only constant member, the late, great Mark E. Smith. Initially associated with the punk movement of the late 1970s, the group's music underwent stylistic changes over the years, but was always characterized by an abrasive guitar-driven sound and frequent use of repetition, underpinned by Smith's distinctive vocals and often cryptic lyrics. This compilation is ideal for anyone wanting to discover the weird and wonderful world of the Fall. 'They are always different; they are always the same.'"

COMMON EIDER, KING EIDER A Wound Of Body CD
A Wound Of Body is the first chapter in Common Eider, King Eider's Wound 'duology', forming the group's most focused and fully realised work to date. Offering a sprawling, audial exploration of wounds at once physical and spiritual, social and societal, natural and environmental. A Wound Of Body is a beautifully stark soundscape, dolorously dense, suffocatingly oppressive and utterly claustrophobic. An immersive black hole of bleak, cavernous drone music and disquieting, desolate ambience, each track a hushed and harrowing ritual; the surface minimalism underpinned by a churning morass of sound, a layered liturgy of blackened invocations and nebulous strings hovering in the shadows. Presented in a beautiful black and silver duotone sleeve, adorned with images of micro-landscapes rendered in bone, stark images of the alien, otherworldly topography that lurks beneath the skin, emblematic of the inevitable decay and disintegration of our physical forms: the ruin we become, and the ruin we leave behind."

SKOTT, JAKOB Instrumentality LP
Causa Sui drummer and El Paraiso visual designer Jakob Skøtt unleashes his most personal vision to date, Instrumentality. His one-man-band formula of synths, drums, and effects serves him as well as ever. This latest set is Skøtt at his most ripe; the grooves are deeper, more stripped down to essentials, yet maintain the vibrant seamless mix of airy timing, drowning drones, and sludgy synth riffs. The album was recorded a few months after Jakob experienced a brief, yet painful spontaneous leak of brain fluid. Instrumentality draws on that experience in its titles and artwork, as well as works as its musical muse. It's music that constantly dives inwards; ever repetitive, yet constantly moving, from micro movements in Skøtt's poly-rhythms, to the five song cycles diving to the depths of the splintered nerves reconnecting with their natural flow. JK FLESH New Horizon 2x12"
Impresario bone grinder, Justin K Broadrick, has prepared a new album for release on Speedy J's Electric Deluxe label as JK Flesh. Broadrick has resolutely inhabited some dark and punishing corners of the musical landscape in his three decades of music production. Whether as a songwriter, guitarist, drummer, label head, studio producer, or electronic alchemist, Broadrick has defined the sublime overlap of misanthropy, noise, and arson-spirited audio. Making his initial marks with grindcore and industrial bands Godflesh and Napalm Death beginning in the late '80s, Broadrick's musical career has arched from blast-beats to head-bobbing hypnosis. With a slew of recent releases from his JK Flesh moniker for Electric Deluxe, Hospital Productions, Downwards, Pi Electronics, and on AnD's Inner Surface, Broadrick has increasingly taken lo-fi cerebral sound exploration into techno's polluted ozone layer; drifting amongst violent collisions of rusty space junk and taking aim at the outmoded species below. JK Flesh's eight-track double-disc album for Electric Deluxe continues his assault on the failings and folly of humanity with a bludgeoning tour of dub influenced techno. A study in resolution, timber, and distortion, the album's tracks are diverse in mood and groove, but are united by the dark, porous, and undulating surface texture of rippling analog treatment. Contemplation of humanity's chances for extinction or evolution provided Broadrick with the mental scaffolding upon which the album's inky and caustic eruptions precipitate. Titles like "Different Species" and "Super Human" on the album's A side betray his interest in futurist's trans-humanist musings, while thumping garage baseline and searing interplanetary emergency sirens anchor the tracks in Broadrick's mastery of noise. The album is generally packed with full-form bass, percussion, and machine sounds. Though tracks like the B side's "External Transmission" juxtapose rubbery and wiry timbers, like the best of acid, over the low-end's boiling black cauldron. "Earlier Forms Of Life" and "Macromolecules" take morose side-long glances at the dancefloor, but primarily develop elegantly grime-filled grooves under the constricting spatial canopies of hyper-detailed delay and reverb. Surface detail and dusty timbers rake the listener's ear across the minimal composition of "The Next Stage". The albums closing track, "Homo Sapiens", drops you into the hopelessly gigantic hull of ship, echoing with sonar, heavy machinery and dulled low-frequencies as your iron tomb cuts across the dead oceans of our planet, or, as Broadrick has spent his musical pursuit, in search of a new one.

Juxta Position returns to his own Failsafe imprint with four post-modern techno pieces, exploring minimalist themes performed on more traditional sound sources, relying on pure sequencing rather than patch programming to convey moods and atmospheres. "Five Four Piano" recalls the work of modern classical composers such as Steve Reich, but re-engineers the aesthetic to fit on techno dancefloors. Likewise, "Orchestral Manouvers" continues this theme, whilst introducing a Millsian twist, and "Icicles" takes the idea even further into more looped techno territory. "Crisp Cold" concludes the record, with a cinematic and serious tone and almost Gothic sensibility.

DIRE WOLVES Paradisiacal Mind LP
Paradisiacal Mind, Dire Wolves' tenth (or possibly twelfth?) full-length since 2008, conjures a floating stellular kraut Americano with quite a lot to pull you in to the mix and then drift you right back out again. Following two simultaneous 2017 releases -- on Feeding Tube Records and Beyond Beyond Is Beyond -- that explored out-of-body experience, this latest work turns decidedly inward. Psychic rock that guides your vision to heaven, and heaven is in your mind. When cover artist Kyla Quigley asked the band to draw from the tarot to inform her new work, the card was The Star, a renewal of hope and strength to carry on. And so it all came together -- acute, right, and obtuse, all at once. A portion of the record was recorded in Oakland by Zachary Watkins (Black Spirituals), who helped set the atmosphere to capture the festival consciousness vibes. The remainder was realized on Bernal Hill, celebrating the 50+ year tradition of San Francisco psychedelic intensity. Additional players include Laura Naukkarinen (Lau Nau), Taralie Peterson (Spires That In The Sunset Rise), and Michael Whittaker (Jackie-O Motherfucker). Recommended to the open minds that celebrate such sounds as the punk-hippie crossover scene of mid '80s SST records, as well as listeners of Scandinavian/Teutonic communal motorik vibes. And those into spiritual jazz, meditative and primordial minimalism, and scratched Environments LPs from the dollar bin. For the heads.

COTTON, ALISON All Is Quiet At The Ancient Theatre LP
"Vinylization of the second cassette released by UK string player Alison Cotton. We first ran into Alison's work in its more overtly folky guise, as a member of Left Outsides. Then we caught the scent of an amazing tape she did with Michael Tanner (aka Plinth) that displayed her more avant garde leanings. All Is Quiet followed the same lines, albeit in solo fashion, blending long dark viola and harmonium lines with vocals drawn straight from the clouds. The effect resembles Tony Conrad in places and John Cale's work with Nico in others, while remaining trademark Alison Cotton throughout. And as nice as the tape was, it's even nicer to has this music on an LP, since it's an archival format and will outlive all of us if properly cared for. TRIMDON GRANGE EXPLOSION Trimdon Grange Explosion LP
"Back in the early Oughts, there was a great UK folk rock combo called The Eighteenth of May. They did one album and cut out. Trimdon Grange Explosion is that band, minus two members, and their debut LP kicks up one of the finest blends of UK folk and West Coast psych since the glory days of Fairport. Alison Cotton and Mark Nicholas (also of Left Outsides) comprise half the band, alongside guitarist Ben Phillipson and drummer Karl Sabino. And their vibe is akin to a classic Witchseason production. Ringing layers of psychedelic guitars, backed by throbbing rhythms, and stacks of small sonic events, topped with gorgeously folk-flecked vocals. There are flashes of everything from the Velvets to the Byrds woven amongst the sounds, but the bulk of it will make you feel like you're playing an album that might have been ZigZag's Record of the Year back in 1971. The band's name refers to a coal mining disaster in a town up near Newcastle in the 1880s. Martin Carthy and the Mekons both did good covers of the tune Tommy Armstrong wrote about it. But none of them did anything approaching the grandeur of this band's album (originally issued as a CDR last year by Borley Rectory). Take up the nearest stethoscope and walk. Now!" --Byron Coley, 2018

WISE, DENIS Wize Music LP
Finders Keepers presents Denis Wise's Wize Music, one of the most unique and unlikely exponents of the highly collectible genres of ambient electronics, experimental tape-music and PINA (Private Issue New Age). This English-born Jamaican-raised sound designer, artist and existentialist furrowed his own unblinkered path through lesser-charted electronic fields for many moons before eventually teaming up with Bill Laswell (with Material) and Daevid Allen in New York to bring self-taught synthesis to Gong during their most oblique periods. Creating two impossibly rare self-pressed vinyl LPs of conceptual inner-visionary outer-galactic angular tonal-dronal alien-art soundscapes in the process, the man known under figure shifting guises such as Dennis Wise/Denis Weise/Dr. Wise combined a culture of sound system circuitry and radiophonic trickery adding teapot poetry and sci-fidelity future-folk to his magnetic mesh. Presented here as the first ever dedicated Wize Music collection, this record combines compositions spanning 1979-1984 in both a solo capacity as well as small-group projects featuring members of the Emerald Web band. Imagine a comic book where a Funkenstein monster called "Laraaji-Scratch Perry" invaded your record shelf while Komendarek and Holger Czukay kept lookout. ACTION, THE Rolled Gold LP
Restocked; the legendary 1967-68 recordings by UK mod band The Action, registered when they were in transition from mod-beat to full-blown psychedelia, just prior to becoming Mighty Baby. Originally recorded as a set of demos with the intention of obtaining an album deal which inexplicably never materialized, Rolled Gold is a collection of brilliant songs, melancholic yet powerful. The Action's classic line-up of Reg King, Alan "Bam" King, Michael Evans, and Roger Powell is augmented with the inclusion of new members Martin Stone on guitar and Ian Whiteman on flute/organ. All of them are playing their hearts out: superb harmonies, great guitar work, and clever arrangements which show the influence of bands like The Byrds and the psychedelic sounds that were coming from the west coast and UK as well as jazz giants like Coltrane. Always the stuff of legend, the Rolled Gold tapes were shelved at the time, not released until 1997 when the Dig The Fuzz label discovered them and did a limited LP/CD run. Out of print on vinyl for many years, Guerssen Records present a new vinyl edition. BODZIN, STEPHAN Powers of Ten CD
2018 repress. German techno mainstay Stephan Bodzin unleashes his full-length musical vision on the world in the form of Powers of Ten, providing another great insight into the melodically rich mind of this modern great. Bodzin says, "Powers of Ten has been with me all my life and is named after a book that has been my background hiss, its confusing truth is my only real faith and its infinity shows me its finiteness. The album is about harmonies, melodies, rhythms. It is an homage to Bob Moog, full of techno beats and sounds and space and party and ecstasy and dancing and listening, and crying and feeling. It is a journey, a philosophy of life, a view of the world, a vague perception. It is my wife, my children, my family, my friends, my passion, my enemy, my greatest fulfillment, my fear, my deepest peace, my power, all my love." As such, this album is hugely personal and is filled with cerebral messages and well-thought-out concepts. All this shines through and makes the listening experience all the more engaging from start to finish. Kicking off with the spine-tingling chords and louche beats of "Singularity," cuts like "Lila" then continue to confirm that Stephan Bodzin has a classical understanding of melody that is way above average. "Blue Giant," "Wir," and "Ix" all manage to be uplifting and thoughtful while simultaneously driven and groovy, and "Birth" comes on with a hymnal high note, long-tailed pads, and subtly shifting beats. The ghostly grooves of "Zulu" mark the majestic midpoint of the album, which then continues to seduce with spiritual synths and more beautiful melodies on cuts like "Odyssee" as well as the album's standout title-track. Unfolding coherently and in soothing fashion, this album once again proves that few producers in the modern world have a knack for melody and an ear for sonic ingenuity quite like Stephan Bodzin. AKITSA Credo Cassette
Cassette version. At the threshold of its 20-year anniversary, Akitsa presents Credo, the band's sixth full-length and their most focused, furious and hypnotic album to date. Throughout its history, the band has operated unconstrained, willing, and capable of simultaneously exploring divergent paths. The accretion of Akitsa's sprawling array of influences finds its most comprehensive expression on this album. Musically, O.T. handled the writing for the album, and there is a compositional coherence to it, despite the shifting moods of the tracks. The lyrics, however, were a shared endeavor; O.T. furnished the lyrics for two tracks as did Néant. Additionally, longtime Akitsa associate and visual artist Valnoir provided lyrics for another track. The drum programming on the title track, is supplied by Kris Lapke of cult industrial enigma Alberich, lending a barbaric strength to the title track. A critical component for the album, adding clarity to the sound without sacrificing the raw violence that has long characterized Akitsa's music, is the visceral mixing, mastering, and post-production by revered producer Arthur Rizk (Prurient, Pissed Jeans, Power Trip). Credo opens with "Siécle Pastoral", a driving, mid-paced riff before shifting into more tortured territory as O.T. delivers the lyrics, a poem by French poet, Jean-Baptiste-Louis Gresset. "Voies Cataclysmiques," is a physical attack, its belligerence standing in contrast to the atmospherics of "Siécle Pastoral", and "Le Monde Est Ma Bile", which showcases the band's unfolding of sorrowful melodies. "Espoir Vassal" is a vicious track featuring soaring, agonizing riffs with hints of Norwegian influence, before the frenzied and tense "Vestiges Fortifiés". The album closes with the title track, combining the most salient elements that define Akitsa's work to date. Across ten minutes, Néant's lyrics, bellowed out in French by O.T., are a pure manifestation of poetic nihilism. The track is thus the metric by which Akitsa will be recognized. That a band would produce its finest work so deep into an already sensational career is an undeniably rare achievement in metal, and in Akitsa's case, it is a testament to the band's tenacity and versatility. After three years of total silence from Akitsa, Credo is a culmination of the band's catalog and rise in cult status and arguably the finest representation of its pure underground devotion. Cassette in deluxe metallic print fold-out sleeve.

LP in deluxe metallic print sleeve.

SILENT SERVANT Shadows of Death and Desire CD
Silent Servant returns with Shadows of Death and Desire. Now-legendary producer, DJ, and art director Juan Mendez arguably reset techno at least twice. Once with his surreal and Europe-by-way-of-LA '80s apocalypse culture aesthetics for Sandwell District, and again as Silent Servant capturing the youth-driven mutation of crossover electronics and dark parties churning in the American underground, which followed directly in the wake of his game-changing modern classic, Negative Fascination (2012). Mendez has evolved to more aggressive and stripped-down acid punk electro dance attacks Shadows of Death and Desire. Mendez took his time to deliver a more raw --yet refined-- brutalism on this, his second album. The otherworldly guitar feedback of opener "Illusion" is cut short with a relentless bass sequence erasing any preconceptions of softening with time. Stereo-panned dusty snares drag along concrete and break apart with without a past or future. The introductory hypnotic sprawl is hastily dissected and left behind for the systematic tension of single "Harm In Hand." Cold drum machine rolls that could have been removed with a laser from early Ministry are offset with a vocal delivery not felt in techno since Suicide. The narrative is constantly disrupted by caustic guitar stabs, its naked urgency like slamming on the brakes while inertia thrusts you forward in space but decidedly not in time. In his own words, "The record is a product of a significant life change that wasn't a benefit," which is eerily felt from the start but is surprisingly washed away with album closer, "Optimistic Decay" (which has become a mission statement from Mendez's visual ideology). "Optimistic Decay" sees Mendez reuniting with vocalist Camella Lobo (Tropic Of Cancer). Lobo's voice rises from spectral vocal delays beyond dub. A subtle nod to Silent Servant's initial Maurizio-leaning EPs but with the grandiosity and opioid slow-motion haze of My Bloody Valentine. Also a student of cinematic deconstruction, the album looks inward from the exterior of LA's untold stories in the netherworlds on the edge of the city, a rapid crash course in confidence games and subsequent letdowns. Shadows of Death and Desire sets the standard in electronic post-punk. Mixed and mastered by Josh Eustis. Designed by Silent Editions.

Hound Gawd! Records is pleased to announce the release of the self-titled debut album by J.D. Hangover. "It is primal, visceral and dangerous, it snarls and seethes, bullies and bruises," explained Dancing About Architecture Magazine. After a string of floorshakin' gigs across Europe and the UK with such likeminded souls as Boss Hog, The Scientists, PIL, and Alejandro Escovedo, they blipped on the radar of Hound Gawd! Records. The upshot of all this is that the J.D. Hangover EP will now be available on good hard honest vinyl, how it was meant to be heard. And that's the truth. KARJALAINEN, HANNU Drift LP
Kingdoms welcomes Finnish composer, producer, visual artist and filmmaker Hannu Karjalainen for Drift. His recording career now spans over a decade, beginning under the pseudonym Hannu and later under his full name for A Handful Of Dust Is A Desert (KK 101CD/LP, 2017) on Karaoke Kalk. Now, this seven-track mini album on Francis Harris' Kingdoms sees Karjalainen continues his explorations in new directions -- touching on field recordings, soundscapes and esoteric instrumentation to build a truly meditative and moving record. Drift begins with "Sermon To The Birds", featuring beautiful plucked strings and ambient atmospheres, before "Carnivorous Flower" casts one into enormous otherworldly dronescapes. "Untitled #34" brings about a beat of sorts, but deeply deconstructed to a crawl, allowing acres of space between the hits and sub bass pulses. "Sunless" is, conversely, a ray of light -- bright, weightless pads provide the feeling of being completely cut adrift. Segueing into "Nightfall", the tones become a little duskier and more intense, building throughout the track. "That Obscure Object" is another trip into the space, as white noise and fragments of melody intersect. The album ends with "The Nile"; a treated piano plays a haunting melodic sequence, seemingly suspended in air. It's a beautiful, emotional conclusion to an album that encourages the listener to take the time to experience its many pleasures.

CHIK WHITE Guts Magnet Sea CD
Chik White is the moniker of Darcy Spidle, jaw harpist, tape collagist, non-institutional locally-sourced field recordist, and founder of the OBEY Convention festival. Spidle was part of the Canadian crust-punk scene in his younger years, but he eventually evolved towards more adventurous sides of music. In 2009, after obtaining a collection of jaw harps, his musical output took its most dramatic turn. Since then, he has released a string of tapes and records on seminal underground labels like Feeding Tube and Chocolate Monk. His latest release, Guts Magnet Sea, is a commissioned album for the Braublff (materie und laut) series; it collects 12 new pieces. The main core was captured during walks to an islet close to Spidle's home. He taped environmental sounds and himself playing the harp aloud. Then, the tapes were thrown into the ocean, becoming co-author for his micro-compositions. The salt disintegrated the magnetic tape and added burbling and grunting noises to the original recordings. As such, the pieces deal with questions of authorship and ownership. The disintegrated pieces are paired to compositions in which the jaw harp acts as a tool to unleash Spidle's inner body sound. A jaw harp is macabre at its core, as it can only produce sound through the cavernous skull. Chik White uses the instrument to jam with the landscape and weather, holding open a discussion between outsider and outside. Spidle's music is a proposition to see culture as a brutal and vital engagement between humans and the natural world, rather than seeing it as an artificial division. At its core, one can hear a humble disposition for humankind, a provisory act in the complex cycle of destruction and rebirth by nature. Jewel case and fold-out insert with exclusive interview and essay by Spidle.

Revisiting another classic for this issue of Len Faki's edits, he chooses Kotai's 2002 track "BA3 Breathing", a standout cut for its ringing vocals and ominous bass line rumbles. With the original clocking in at the 10-minute mark already, Faki's tribute mix is not much shorter, but manages to fill the spaces between beats with lots of fresh details, lifting the song's energy to a new level, while retaining the soft but sexy vibe of Kotai's composition. The Hardspace Tool version puts its focus on busty beats and percussive prowess, staking its claim as contender for bossiest bass line of the night.

VELOSO, CAETANO Caetano Veloso (Araçá Azul) (Clear Vinyl) LP
Lilith Records present a reissue of Caetano Veloso's Caetano Veloso (Araçá Azul), originally issued in 1972. Apparently when this album was originally released in 1972, confused and bewildered fans, expecting more of the same found on Transa, released earlier that year, returned the album to the shop, demanding a refund. Meanwhile, critics raved, and many now consider Araçá Azul to be one of his great creative moments. To be fair to his many fans, it was a stark departure from his previous releases, which were decidedly more pop, but Veloso had been through a lot recently, having just returned from political exile in the UK, so it is no wonder that the artist was feeling a bit like he needed to fly in the face of conformity. In Veloso's own words, "I made this album without thinking, without taking the time to stop to think." He refers to the album's "insolent experimentalism" and calls it a kind of "last stand." Lilith Records present a reissue of Caetano Veloso's Caetano Veloso (Irene), originally issued in 1969. Although Veloso had already been thrown in jail once for his criticism of Brazil's military regime, he continued to speak out against it on Caetano Veloso (Irene), with tracks like "Irene", (about a machine gun-toting outlaw celebrated by the left). No wonder he would soon find himself in political exile in the UK. The general tone of the album is in keeping with its dire message and actually, Veloso felt it was important for his voice of protest to be heard around the world. If he was a high profile public figure, he felt that he would be safer. Despite all of this (or perhaps because of all this) and the man still managed to make excellent records! Clear vinyl.

FERRARI, LUC L'Escalier Des Aveugles LP
"L'Escalier des Aveugles, or 'The Stairway of the Blind', was commissioned in November 1990 by Spanish National Radio (Radio Nacional de España). Asked for a piece to premiere as part of the European Day of Music, Luc Ferrari returned with a radiophonic concept that organised his anecdotal music into montage form, sequencing short, elusive narratives in a successive way. The completed composition is formed of thirteen chapters containing a mixture of environmental and synthesised sound, commentary, chatter, and encounters with people and places. Each focuses on a small event within this playbook, and Ferrari notes that each 'in addition to being a realistic photograph, will be the subject of a 'setting to music': fragments of voice and atmosphere will be sampled and will produce musical matter or a 'song'.' The sonic language of Madrid forms the setting to which Ferrari lays out the persistent theme of the piece, that of the composer being guided throughout the city by a young woman. Using a game-like structure (liners for this edition include Ferrari's 'Regles de Jeu', or 'Rules of the Game' which act as a script or score to the piece) the motivation is posed: imagine that one day you are told 'I know a place in Madrid that sounds amazing (or bizarre)', to which you reply 'Let's go to it together.' The recordings toy with the relationships between guide and tourist, translator, director and actress, and masculine and feminine that emerge as Ferrari and the actresses follow this action, documenting the shared experience and connections they make as they visit these places. Six actresses guide Ferrari (and the listener) through locations simultaneously ordinary and sonically rich: the metro; the El Corte Inglés department store where we hear the gossip from changing rooms set against music emanating from the PA; vagabonds declaiming their political stance in the Conde de Barajas plaza; interactions buying apples in a market; the reverberant and spacious halls of the Prado Museum where one actress gives a moving description of her favourite painting - Goya's The 3rd of May 1808. Ferrari replies in French to their comments in Spanish, and there are several self-referential plots, devices, and word games that flirt with the poetics and rhythm of language and sound. A recital of Lorca's poem 'La Casada Infiel' in 'Hommage À Lorca' in amongst the location recordings feels striking, and the call and response of 'La Nouvelle de L'Escalier', where one of the actresses descends the staircase of the blind - a long stone stairway in Madrid proposed to Ferrari as an interesting location to visit during the trip by producer José Iges. She replies to Ferrari's vocal enunciation of the place (and title) in French - 'L'Escalier des Aveugles' - with the place-name in Spanish: La Escalera de los Ciegos. Using this repeated title and image of the staircase of the blind as a symbolic place, a line is drawn to a situational landscape experienced and diffused through snapshots and allusion rather than holistically overviewed, sound conjuring pictures within the imagination. In the sensorial qualities of Ferrari's treatment of emotion and language -- fortified with electro-acoustic motifs and musical properties -- the piece accelerates towards a render that is truthful, beautiful, yet also surreal; somewhere between theatre and reality, a gonzo cinema of the ear. Vinyl cut at D&M from original DAT master tape. Includes a 12-page accordion-style booklet with documents from Luc Ferrari's archive."

SOUNDWALK COLLECTIVE Death Must Die 12"
"Soundwalk Collective is a multi-disciplinary audio-visual collective founded by Stephan Crasneanscki, including members Simone Merli and Kamran Sadeghi. The Collective's approach to composition combines anthropology, ethnography, non- linear narrative, psycho-geography, the observation of nature, and explorations in recording and synthesis. The source material of their works is always linked to specific locations, natural or artificial, and requires long periods of investigative travel and field work. Their recent projects include a collaboration with Patti Smith and reworking the archive of recordings on Jean-Luc Godard's film set. For the 8th Marionette publication, Soundwalk Collective present Death Must Die. A sound piece that began in 2004 and ended up as a composition for the PS1 radio in NY. For this New release the Collective has revisited the piece in a more musical way. Death Must Die is based on Stephan Crasneanscki's multiple visits to the sacred Indian city of Varanasi, originally known as Kashi and Banares. Sacred texts maintain that Varanasi isn't even a city, but rather a lingam of celestial light, the subtle and cosmic form of Lord Shiva which manifested itself as a city for the sake of seekers of liberation. To bathe in the holy Ganga is to be purified of your sins. To die in Varanasi, is to attain liberation and to bring an end to the cycle of rebirth known as transmigration. Determined to capture the elusive reality of this ancient city, Stephan has day by day recorded and re-imagined his understanding of how to perceive the continuously moving stream of the holy Ganga; performing a simple form of sadhana, which request is to be very alert but also to allow your mind to be quiet, making it easier to slip into the streams, and into the current that both the city and the river are offering. Death Must Die begins before the rising of the sun and reproduces the cycle of a day in Varanasi, going down the river that is believed to be the divinity descended to this Earth in the form of water. She grants us happiness and salvation. The composition attempts to emulate the vibration of Kashi that encourages the kind of interiority that enables a person to get a better perspective on reality than one might have, while constantly being in the current of human life. A vibration dedicated to eliminating the distinction between human and non-human, between alive and dead, between light and dark."

GUT, GUDRUN Moment CD
Moment is German electronic originator Gudrun Gut's latest solo collection. Her first solo album since 2012's Wildlife (MONIKA 077CD/LP) and 2007's I Put A Record On (MONIKA 055CD/LP) Moment distills a lifetime of persuasions and obsessions into a compelling 14-track statement. Stark, somber, sultry, and clever, the sides slide between ballad and lament, synth-pop and spoken word, anthemic and abstract. Gudrun Gut's story spans many years, scenes, and sounds, from the "ingenious dilettantes" subculture of early 1980's Berlin as part of Mania D, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Malaria! to her twilit industrial pop trio Matador into an expansive solo catalog of later work scoring films, videos, and radio plays. Her talents extend beyond musician, however, to include founding record labels (the influential imprints Moabit Musik and Monika Enterprise), club nights (progressive electronic pop collective Oceanclub), and experimental feminist collaborations (Monika Werkstatt). Gut also works extensively in the technical sector of the recording industry, as a producer. Recent projects have included collaborations with Antye Greie (AGF) and Hans-Joachim Irmler of Faust, participating on the advisory committee for Musicboard Berlin, and performing at The Royal Albert Hall with Âme as part of an Innervisions label night."Gut's background as a key figure in Berlin's first-wave industrial uprising still casts an aura in the music's mechanized rhythms and frozen emotional palette but decades of improvisation and collaboration have deepened her sense of composition and melody beyond any easy genre categorization. If anything Moment finds Gut's muse at its most enigmatic, threading shades of motorik hypnosis, technoid laboratory, coldwave pop, glitchy gauze, and even a gender-bent Bowie cover ("Boys Keep Swinging") into its eclectic web. It also showcases the depth and detail of her voice, reserved but suggestive, intoning blunt truths and opaque poetry in both German and English. This is music of history and heartache, modernity and desire, alienation and expression, by a singular creative committed to the complexities of sound." --Britt Brown

PLANETARY ASSAULT SYSTEMS The Light Years Reworks 3LP
2018 repress. Having already unleashed a considerable amount of collaborative magic with the Planetary Funk: 22 Light Years series of remix EPs (MOTE 046EP, MOTE 047EP, 2016), Luke Slater upped the ante with six full sides worth of material, all of them injecting the spirit of classic Planetary Assault Systems into new sonic organisms. Using motifs from past P.A.S. successes, Luke Slater and his cohorts join here to make something radical and revitalizing: too cohesive for a "compilation album" and with too much autonomy granted to the guest remixers to be a simple "tribute". Three of the tracks in the program are intense and captivating live re-workings from Slater himself, hurtling from the speakers with an apparent minimum of post-production polish and an optimal level of buzzing energy. While this on its own would make for a compelling listen, the album is also laden with contributions from an international assembly of electronic soul controllers (to wit: Marcel Fengler, Psyk, Lucy, Slam, Octave One, Function, and Kamikaze Space Programme). Fengler kicks off the proceedings with an ecstatic and lustrous rework of "Twelve", a melodic sunrise joining a synth pad massage to a locked-in and systematic rhythm. Psyk's own interpretation of the same track preserves the same insistence but applies it to a completely different time and place, driving the listener through a wilderness of coded signals and an ambiguous repetition of the title that sounds like it could be as much a warning as an indicator of progress. KSP's version of "Function 6" gradually builds a cyborg leitmotif from an overdriven martial beat and epileptic machine breakdowns. Sequencing this with Octave One's "Booster" rework is an ideal choice, as the squared-away EBM/electro-funk sequences and flanged hi-hats seem to refer to a different phase in the life cycle of the same machine. Function's "Diesel Drudge," on the other hand, moves from the machine world into a totally oneiric world typified by backwards-masked/time-traveling voices and a thick strobe-lit haze. Lucy's re-envisioning of "Surface Noise" is a no-nonsense tantric exercise in shedding preconceptions and inhibitions. Rounding out the collection is Steve Bicknell's "Raid" version - a breathing mosaic of rhythmic pulses and clattering objects - and Slam's characteristically intense modification of "Temporary Suspension," whose low-end sequences continually bubble and seethe yet never completely boil over. Comes on 180 gram clear vinyl; includes a download card.

The EP is discreetly touching hidden dissonant atmospheres, nostalgic tones of cello, while also unveiling vibrant electronic resonances and grotesque texture distractions.

NIDAM, MAAYAN Sea Of Thee 2LP
Double LP version. Get ready and prepared for a very exclusive visit. With Sea Of Thee, Maayan Nidam welcomes the inauguration of a place that feels exactly like it should be, in every moment, with every movement; it just adapts to one's preferences. Her sonic realm is an elastic and exotic wonderland, full of cozy challenges for feverish dancers, acrobat time travelers, shady lounges and lovers of small, clandestine gestures. It is a realm with many different angles and a wide perspective that opens the zone so one can marvel at its arcane resonance. Lost in space and time, sounds from far away come together before one's inner eye to caress each other like they have never met before but ever belonged together. They form up to tonal episodes that tell stories of sublime darkness, sneaky affection, mystery and magic, dream destinations, and the wisdom of sound. They provoke the awakening of a drama that takes twists and turns to express all facets of sweetness and danger. Falling into a void of pleasure, the mindset feels soft and warm and thick like a forgotten layer of a favorite, padded memory. Time to feel comfortable and alert; welcome to Maayan Nidam's realm of tech blues noir.

KLAUSS & CRAIG DJ Deep & Traumer Remixes 12"
For their final release of 2018, Planet E Communications present DJ Deep & Traumer's remixes of Klauss & Craig, the collaboration between Argentinian synth ensemble Klauss and Carl Craig. The three-track remix EP's origins were as a pair of spec mixes by DJ Deep (Cyril Etienne) and his regular collaborator Roman Poncet, aka Traumer. The duo found inspiration from the original Klauss & Craig EP that led to spontaneous experiments on their own remixes. Soon a trio of versions emerged, with two by the duo together, and an additional solo mix by Poncet under his Traumer alias.

RS PRODUCOES Bagdad Style LP
RS Produções are the next, thrilling young unit to emerge from Lisbon's fertile club scene via Príncipe. Produced by core members DJ Narciso and Nuno Beats, Bagdad Style supplies a crisply rugged, bittersweet taste of the crew's hyperlocal sound, spanning electro-compatible Batida bangers alongside wonky, slower semi-tarraxos and deep, wave-y house mutations. If you were snagged by Príncipe's P. Adrix, DJ Lilocox, and Niagara releases already in 2018, this one's unmissable, too. Formed in 2014 as a close group of pals from Rinchoa, Rio de Mouro, on the edges of Lisbon, RS Produções grew wings when, in 2016, a then 17-year-old Narciso knuckled down and relaunched RS as a proper crew with DJs, producers and an MC in the same model as pivotal Lisbon posse, Piquenos DJs Do Guetto. The crew have since become regular fixtures at Príncipe's famous monthly residency in Lisbon's Musicbox club, and their debut showcase is certain to send them spinning around the globe. The EP is fronted by two unmissable Batida heaters from DJ Narciso in the bare bones electro percussion of "Caipirinha" and the kinked metallic cargaa of "Constipacao do Poco", before the slinky interplay of dissonant organ riffs and flighty pipes in "Guerreiro" highlights a wicked taste for sour, battery-tang lixx that comes to inform the rest of the EP, courtesy of Nuno Beats' slower tarraxo styles in "Lingrinhas" and the super wave-y spesh, "Futuro", while Nuno & Narciso come together with ruder, up-tempo torque in the hypnotic electro-house swang of "Aberturu" and the sensuous deep Kuduro contours of "Hino RS", which should leave listeners in no doubt as to the duo's breadth and quality of club music. Artwork/hand-painted sleeves by Márcio Matos. Edition of 500.

RY-CO JAZZ Dansons... Avec Le Ry-Co Jazz LP
Radio Martika presents Ry-Co Jazz's Dansons... Avec Le Ry-Co Jazz. Dansons... is ten swirling and euphonic Afro-Latin gems from the Congolose band Ry-Co Jazz, recorded between 1961 and 1966 for the Disques Vogue series Dansons Avec. Ry-Co Jazz was one of the leading combos during the heydays of Afro-Latin music in central and west Africa. Their rhythmical and amusing play tempted European listeners and soon they recorded in France and toured all over Europe. After the Disques Vogue period in 1966, Ry-Co Jazz embarked for Martinique to play one gig and unexpectedly wrote a new chapter in Caribbean music history. Radio Martiko has tracked down the more obscure masterpieces from the pre-Martinique repertoire of this cosmopolitan band. Four different hand-made sleeves, includes download.

WE WILL FAIL Dancing CD
For the third chapter of Refined Productions Aleksandra Grünholz aka We Will Fail delivers her third full length album entitled Dancing on her recently-launched label with Jakub Mikolajczyk, head of MonotypeRec label and MonotypePressings. Here she tells the story: "Taking a break from rationality, my first thoughts about the theme of this album were about the night, when our sight is limited and thoughts are corrupted by fatigue. I don't dance anymore, I don't party, I don't let myself go. Some time ago that part of life slipped away from me. This album is like entering into a place you shouldn't be in. A lot of rave inspired sounds were used: dreamy pads, arpeggios, simple melodic structures; but this album is not easy and simple. As head of a graphic design studio in Warsaw, last year was very hard for me, the amount of work started to overwhelm me; I started to feel stupid and possessed by the work, this is how the tracks "Very Urgent" and "Economic Maladies" were born. The track "Reason" is about losing rationality and how easy it is to do. "Put Your Hands Up In The Air" encompasses the rave. It's also a kind of question, can music itself tell a story? Very often in EDM or trance music there is a story; I like to call it catharsis. A moment, when the beat slows down and melody/pads become solo. I tried to extract this moment, without adding drops and aggressive rhythms. "So Who's The Man" is about regaining the power, slowly but consequently. This album is a about feeling bold, monstrous, and strong, like looking insolently into someone's eyes. You have to be patient with this one, because it builds up slowly. If you listen only for a fragment you miss the whole idea. "Beasts From The East" was inspired by the thought of being a small peace-loving person in a chaotic world that is dominated by stupidity. The track "2018" epitomizes the rave, but more complicated. Each of the layers are simplistic and could construct a dance track, but as there are so many sounds simultaneously, it can become disturbing in the perfect way. "Diving in Plastic" was fit for the last track; I didn't want the album to have a perfect conclusion, I wanted to leave the listener hanging and ready for more."

VOETVOLK The Sea Within LP
Composed by Maarten Van Cauwenberghe, Elko Blijweert, and Bjorn Eriksson, The Sea Within is a thrilling ménage à trois of acclaimed soundscape artists. As it's already given away by the title, their first collaboration comprises the original scores to The Sea Within, a contemporary-dance performance by Voetvolk, the company of Van Cauwenberghe and dancer/choreographer Lisbeth Gruwez. The Sea Within is Voetvolk's second record, after 2017's Bring It To Our Senses, which comprised the original scores to the company's triptych of the ecstatic body (consisting of It's going to get worse and worse and worse, my friend, AH/HA and We're pretty fuckin' far from okay). The electronic sound design of The Sea Within is partly inspired by musical experiments: the combination of minimalistic synths, a tingling game with frequencies and a strong, persistent bass will push this record to the bottom of one's senses. 180 gram vinyl, includes glossy print and printed inner on uncoated paper.

FRANKLIN, ARETHA The Tender, The Moving, The Swinging... LP
Rumble Records presents a reissue of Aretha Franklin's The Tender, The Moving, The Swinging, originally issued in 1962. It's a common misconception that the late legend of soul, Aretha Franklin, didn't cut a good record until she got out from under her Columbia Records contract and began recording with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section (aka The Swampers) for Atlantic Records. While those Atlantic sides are some of the greatest deep Southern soul ever recorded, there's a lot to love about her earlier recordings. Yes, there is much more of a pop R&B vibe to them with swinging arrangements and large horn and string sections but that unique and perfect voice is still there, her piano playing is gorgeous, and there are some serious Northern Soul burners in the bunch. The Tender, The Moving, The Swinging features some beautiful ballads and killer floor fillers and will please any fan of early '60s soul and R&B.

In 1995 Motorpsycho was invited by Trondheim freebag jazz combo The Source to share the stage at Kongsberg Jazz Festival. The band´s psychedelic/kraut/prog-leanings hadn´t taken them as far as jazz yet, not to mention the Ornette Coleman-style free jazz stuff The Source were playing, but they were game. This is the result: some 70 minutes of metal overkill, early '70s crypto-funk, analog synth hell and some pretty free form, out-there escapades. An early example of Norwegian genre-crossing that still sounds surprisingly fresh 23 years later.

VA Discophilia Belgica: Next-door-disco & Local Spacemusic from Belgium 1975-1987 2CD
Patrick, Raymond, Marianne, Roland, Kevin and Bert. These are among the most common and ordinary names in Belgium. Yet, these are also the names of some of the artists that appear of Discophilia Beligica, a 30-track compilation from groove-heavy record label SDBAN. Compiled by crate diggers Loud E and The Wild, Discophilia Beligica is a collection of next-door-disco and local space music from Belgium 1975-1987. The tracks on this delightfully obscure collection are from ordinary folk; most have day jobs. Yet as musicians, they go as far out as possible in to the disco universe. Not too serious or overambitious, definitely not overproduced. This is stripped-down space music, next-door disco. The choice of music is not a reflection of an actual 'scene'. In fact, most of the bands here have probably never performed live. The tracks on this compilation are the result of a decade of crate digging in flea markets, charity shops, and vinyl trades and picking out what might appeal to a contemporary dancefloor or to deranged and perhaps adventurous earbuds. That said, there's not many countries that can provide the wonderful diversity and weirdness of these sounds. Belgians have a great passion for music and there is an abundance of recording studios, impresarios, local radio stations and pressing plants. Bars and clubs sit side by side, providing a soundtrack for our ordinary lives and it's here where Patrick, Raymond, Roland or Marianne draw inspiration that led them into the studio and pick up a mic, a bass or synthesizer, making music to groove to, feel sexy to and be free. Disc one of the CD version and Part 1 (SDBAN 011LP) features: R. Roland, Carl Watson, Charles Vernon, Love Dream, Fancy, Marianne, Flame, Steve, Carl Candy and the Candy-Chicks, La Bush, System Love, Cora Corona, The Diskery and The Rogers Disc two of the CD version and Part 2 (SDBAN 012LP) features C.C. Band, Quartz, Kevin Morane, L2, Venus, Bubble, Rendez-Vous, Raymond Joniaux, Dan Davis, Manuel Ferrero, Afro-Disiak, Autumn, Rayon Laser, Patrik, Roland Delys, and DJ Bert & Eagle. DEAS comes back to Second State Audio with Red Source EP. He delivers four dancefloor burners of high-pace, abrasive, yet euphoric techno. "Face To Face" follows suit with the same approach and concept yet relies more heavily on the drums to do the heavy lifting. DEAS takes his sound palette and switches out the programming of expected sounds creating a surprisingly cool cut with "Second Signal".

KTL The Pyre: Versions Distilled To Stereo LP
French music, art, and publishing imprint Shelter Press release another chapter of its on-going documentation of the work of Gisèle Vienne. The Pyre: Versions Distilled To Stereo is the score composed and recorded by KTL (Stephen O'Malley and Peter Rehberg) for the dance piece "The Pyre", written and directed by Gisèle Vienne. The music created by KTL incorporates invisible and absent elements -- ghosts, one might say. It proceeds from simulated diegetic sounds (which are part of the action) interwoven with real sounds -- a musical creation that makes up an extra-diegetic sound score. This composition dizzyingly sculpts the space on stage and generates an impression of great spatial depth, which activates light-sculptures that in turn evoke the illusion of a tunnel, whose depth also results in a play of reflections. Through these different media, the aim is to develop and shatter -- without looking to resolve -- the exceptional intensity that can arise from the dialectical tension between presence and absence, as well as from the characters that are seeking flight. The music, originally performed on a multi-channel spatialized soundsystem has been distilled to this stereo version for home use, half-speed mastered and cut by Matt Colton. This record announces -- and is one chapter -- in the forthcoming release of the first monograph dedicated to the work of French choreographer Gisèle Vienne and documented by French photographer Estelle Hanania. This book -- is one of Shelter Press' most ambitious to date, catalog number 100 -- will be released in Spring 2019. Text and voice by Dennis Cooper. Photographs by Estelle Hanania; Design by Bartolomé Sanson. Printed innersleeves; Includes download card; First edition of 700 on clear green wax.

BABY GRANDMOTHERS Merkurius LP
Merkurius is the mind-melting new surprise album from Baby Grandmothers, the originators of Swedish psychedelia. The band launches into drones, avant-garde dirges, and fevered hard-rockin' wig-outs heavily overblown with jams rocketing into surreal spheres, all with an urgency of the now. Baby Grandmothers are bona fide psychedelic originators. The three-piece band consisting of Kenny Håkansson, Bengt Linnarson, and Pelle Ekman originally formed in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1967. Established after the dissolution of the R&B band, The T-Boones, the Baby Grandmothers group enjoyed a cult following as the house band at the legendary psychedelic music club Filips. Here, they became one of Sweden's original key psychedelic bands, together with Pärson Sound and Hansson & Karlsson. In 1968, the Baby Grandmothers were chosen as the support for the Swedish leg of the Jimi Hendrix Experience European tour. After releasing their first, and only, single (now one of the highest-priced records from the Swedish '60s psychedelic/progressive rock canon), the band expanded to a four-piece and gradually morphed into the Mecki Mark Men. This formation came to release two albums (one of them on prestigious US label Limelight) and became the first Swedish rock band to do a major US tour. After recording their last album in the Chess studio in Chicago, the band split up, but the original power-trio continued on with a new musical vision: to merge acid rock with Swedish folk music; Kebnekajse was born. They became one of the most popular of all Swedish psychedelic/progressive bands of the 1970s and had a huge influence on young Swedish musicians, and are still active and very popular today. Baby Grandmothers are now back at their power-trio roots, still consisting of the original band members led by the legendary Swedish psychedelic guitarist Håkansson. After 50 years in the service of psychedelic music, this new album finds the Baby Grandmothers at their peak and as timeless as ever. In exclusive silver foil sleeve with insert sheet; edition of 1000.

REFREE La Otra Mitad CD
Raül Refree is one of the most acclaimed Spanish producers of the last decade, and tak:til/Glitterbeat now presents La Otra Mitad, his new album. Working with artists such as Silvia Pérez Cruz and Rosalía, he has been at the forefront of the so-called "new flamenco" movement. He also collaborates with rock experimentalists like Lee Ranaldo from Sonic Youth, but Raül's musical life doesn't stop there. He has released six previous solo albums, film soundtracks among other genre-skewing projects. It is this merging of sound worlds that makes Raül's new solo release La Otra Mitad (The Other Half) such an immersive and transportive listen. Mesmerizing acoustic and electric guitar explorations meet sampled street recordings, haunted voices and hushed electronics. The Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida said, "an artist should always try to do what he still does not know how to do." Without actually knowing this quotation, Refree's musical art seems to subscribeto Chillida's edict. In 2017, he produced two instrumental 10-inch EPs. The first of these, Jai Alai Vol.01, is mostly a collection of reflective solo guitar music, with each title named according to the instrument used on the track and the date on which it was played. The second Jai Alai volume is a different proposition, with the material coming from a soundtrack project, and the sound palette expanded to include recordings of street music, voices and a subtle electronic dimension. The tak:til release La Otra Mitad is an album that weaves together the two EPs and creates a dramatic new entity in itself. Whereas the guitar tracks included from Jai Alai Vol.01 echo the spontaneity and simplicity of Derek Bailey or Durutti Column, they are balanced beautifully by the soundtrack compositions from Jai Alai Vol.02, that make up the majority of the album. Much of La Otra Mitad is music made for a movie, Entre Dos Aguas (2018) by Isaki Lacuesta, a drama which explores the world of flamenco. These pieces are an exercise in voices found and converted into samples: flamenco singer Rocío Márquez, or El Bolita, a boy who participated in the film and spontaneously started singing in front of Raül, or vocal sketches from El Niño de Elche's Antología Del Cante Flamenco Heterodoxo (2018) which was co-composed and produced by Refree. Throughout the process of making La Otra Mitad, Raül Refree found another voice: his own; always changing and expanding in richness and open to saying, what he does not yet know.

BASHO, ROBBIE Venus In Cancer LP
"Though frequently overshadowed by his contemporary and Takoma Records labelmate John Fahey, the compositions and performances of Daniel R. Robinson Jr., best known by the stage name Robbie Basho, were integral in the development of the American primitive guitar style. Along with Fahey, and songwriter/composers such as Max Ochs, Leo Kottke, and others, Basho helped bring to the masses the distinct form of guitar finger-picking, which blended folk and country-blues with neo-classical composition techniques. Unlike his contemporaries, Basho went a step further by incorporating unorthodox open tunings on his 12-string guitar, as well as elements of Indian classical music, inspired by the sarod-playing of his mentor Ali Akbar Khan. Unfortunately Robbie Basho passed on in relative obscurity at the early age of 45 due to a fatal stroke, so he was never able to witness the extent of his influence. Nonetheless his legacy lives on in the works of American primitive guitar revivalists like James Blackshaw and Glenn Jones, as well as indie folk units like Currituck County or Six Organs of Admittance. All of Basho's signature stylistic elements are on full display on his 1969 album Venus In Cancer, which added onto his dextrous, steel-string finger-picking, additional cues from raga, flamenco, Appalachian folk, and even foresaw the arrival of new age music. A mystical and astrologically-inspired collection of guitar improvisation, one which clocks in at nearly 50 minutes, and a perfect representation of Basho's visionary American folk brilliance."

SPOERRI, BRUNO Rare & Unreleased 1971-1998 LP
WRWTFWW Records announce the release of Rare & Unreleased 1971-1998, a collection of never-heard and hard-to-find works by Swiss music pioneer and synth super wizard Bruno Spoerri. Rare & Unreleased 1971-1998 gives a fascinating glimpse into Bruno Spoerri's incredibly inventive repertoire, collecting tracks from projects as diverse as commissioned music for trade fairs, the Swiss railroads, or the union of Swiss cheese makers(!), soundtracks for TV shows about ecology, live synth improvisations at Montreux Jazz Festival, and sound installations for art exhibitions. Always the adventurer, Spoerri records a pneumatic drill for the irresistible electronic bossa of "Konzert für SIG-Pressluftwerkzeuge", mixes train sounds and the EMS Synthi-100 for the joyful lo-fi funk of "Rollin'", lets overheating synthesizers take a life of their own to create the sci-fi ambient of "Waves of Montreux", and works with bees, pigs and various birds for the environmental music bliss of "Rhythm'n bees" and "Birds of Cochin". Synthzerland rejoice, it's time for another captivating journey of sound exploration on Planet Spoerri! Bruno Spoerri celebrated his 83th birthday in August this year. He is still experimenting, recording, customizing audio gear, improvising on stage and in the studio, collaborating (Julian Sartorius, Franz Treichler of Young Gods, Marco Repetto of Grauzone, Roger Girod), inventing new sounds and finding new creative outlets. His immense, innovative, and award-filled career started in the 1950s and covers jazz, electronic music, film and TV work, early techno, ambient, and everything in between. Mr. Spoerri has influenced an entire generation of producers and musicians, including Jay-Z who sampled his song "On My Way" (without permission) for "Versus" on Magna Carta Holy Grail (2013) (an agreement was later arranged). This is WRWTFWW's third collaboration with Bruno Spoerri, after the reissue of two seminal albums: 1978's Voice Of Taurus (WRWTFWW 014LP) and 1978's The Sound Of The UFOs (WRWTFWW 015LP). The album is sourced from original masters and available on a vinyl LP cut at Emil Berliner Studios (formerly the in-house recording department of Deutsche Grammophon). It comes housed in a 350g sleeve with a superb artwork by Nicolas Eigenheer, and packed with track-by-track liner notes by Mr. Spoerri. 140 gram vinyl.
