BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE The Brian Jonestown Massacre CD
The Brian Jonestown Massacre burst into 2019 with the release of their 18th full-length album, just seven months after their last one, Something Else (AUK 043CD/LP). The self-titled, nine-track album is released on Anton Newcombe's A Recordings, and it was recorded and produced at Anton's Cobra Studio in Berlin. The album was originally going to be released in September of 2018, but due to a hugely successful global tour -- taking in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe -- the release was delayed. Recorded in early 2018, the album features Sara Neidorf on drums, Heike Marie Radeker (LeVent) on bass, Hakon Adalsteinsson (BJM, Third Sound, Gunman, Holy Ghost) on guitar, and Anton Newcombe on multiple instruments. Also making a guest vocal appearance on "Tombes Oubliées" is Rike Bienert who has sung on previous BJM albums. The band performed songs from the album throughout the European leg of the 2018 tour. Anton Newcombe has been a very busy man over the past few years, having released four critically-acclaimed Brian Jonestown Massacre albums and an EP, one soundtrack album, and two albums with Tess Parks. All releases were fully recorded and produced at Anton's studio. The Brian Jonestown Massacre track "Bon Bon" was used in the 2015 Palm D'Or winner Dheepan. Anton penned the soundtrack for Moon Dogs, a film directed by multi-BAFTA nominated Philip John (Svengali, Downton Abbey, Being Human).

PARKS & ANTON NEWCOMBE, TESS I Declare Nothing LP
2019 repress; LP version. Pressed on black 180-gram vinyl and housed in a gatefold sleeve. Born in Berlin in early 2014 and nurtured over the following summer, I Declare Nothing is the spine-tingling collaboration between Tess Parks and Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre), co-written and co-played by the duo and released to coincide with their 2015 European tour, following their Record Store Day 2015 Cocaine Cat single (AUK 118EP). A native of Toronto, Tess Parks moved to London, England, at the age of 17, where she briefly studied photography before deciding to focus on music. Parks made an impression on industry legend Alan McGee, founder of Creation Records, though the timing of their meeting could hardly have been less ideal; McGee was no longer involved in music and Parks was due to move back to Toronto. After moving back to her hometown in 2012, Parks formed a band on the advice of McGee and less than a year after their meeting, he returned to music with his label 359 Music. Parks became one of his first signings and released her debut record, Blood Hot, in November 2013 to excellent reviews. One reviewer described her as "Patti Smith on Quaaludes." Others have mentioned her "gauzy psychedelic sound" and "smouldering voice." Alan McGee himself said, "She's only 24 and is already an amazing songwriter... she just doesn't quite know she is yet -- her most beautiful quality is her lack of ego. Tess is an amazing lady." Anton Newcombe is the leader of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, who returned in May 2014 with their 14th full-length album, Revelation (AUK 030CD/LP), to critical acclaim, and released Musique de film imaginé (AUK 032CD/LP) in 2015. The band's first album to be fully recorded and produced at Newcombe's recording studio in Berlin, it was supported by a successful European tour. Named in tribute to the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist and his influence in introducing Eastern culture and music into the world of Western rock 'n' roll, The Brian Jonestown Massacre formed in San Francisco, California in 1990. Through two dozen band members and numerous "ups and downs" (some of which have been famously sensationalized in the media), the one thing that has always remained consistent for this psychedelic collective is frontman Mr. Anton Alfred Newcombe.

BEASTS, THE Still Here CD
After an extremely emotional final performance with the Beasts of Bourbon, Tex Perkins hit upon the idea of getting all of the band's members, past and present, into a recording studio with no particular agenda. It was more of a celebratory thing he had in mind than anything else. Sadly, bassist Brian Hooper didn't make it along as he passed away a week after the Beasts last show. Assembled in Soundpark Studio a couple of weeks later were Charlie Owen, Boris Sujdovic, Tony Pola, Spencer Jones, Kim Salmon, and Tex Perkins. They were unprepared save for some sketchy ideas, loose ends, and a couple of covers. With limited time the band knocked together a collection of jams pretty much true to the crazy M.O. employed back when The Axeman's Jazz got laid down in that fateful eight-hour session in 1983. Songs weren't so much learned as ideas were thrown together and recorded the moment they began to coalesce. Captured were: Brian Hooper's "What The Hell Was I Thinking", James Baker's "Drunk On A Train", Boris' "Don't Pull Me Over", Kim's "Pearls Before Swine", Tex's "On My Back" and "Just Let Go", and Spencer's "At The Hospital". There was also Zappa's "The Torture Never Stops" and Warren Zevon's "My Shit's Fucked Up" (was there ever a more appropriate cover for the Beasts?) Add to that some untitled jams that became the hilarious "Your Honour" and "It's All Lies". Sound like an album? You betchya! Deeply sad is that Spencer was only around long enough to make it onto one track. Absolutely wonderful is that he did make it onto the recording. And with such a funny and typically Jones style piece of observation as "At The Hospital". With respect, this isn't the Beasts of Bourbon. It would need to have Jonesy on every track to be that!

PIOULARD & SEAN CURTIS PATRICK, BENOIT Avocationals LP
Beacon Sound presents a first-time collaboration between Thomas Meluch (aka Benoit Pioulard) and Sean Curtis Patrick, entitled Avocationals. Over the course of nine songs the two use synthesizers, reel-to-reel tape machines, field recordings, guitar, and processed voice to conjure the ghosts of 20th century Great Lakes shipwrecks. From the muffled thumping of "Stonefax", which might bring to mind the cracking and bowing of a ship on its way to the lake bottom, to the pulsating vocal drone that guides "Sunek", evoking peril and loss, each of these songs brings to mind the final moments of doomed seafarers and their cargo-laden ships, the disintegration of hubris, the fraying of memory. By the time "Cabot" rolls around, like a lonely fog horn crossing the waves on a stormy night, the effect is of watching a decaying film loop that is somehow not only representative of a distant past but also of what perhaps lies ahead. Wintery, yet humming throughout with a narcotic warmth, Avocationals will pull you underwater and submerge you in the murky depths of a lost world. As the artists themselves write, "An avocational is an amateur diver who assists in rescue, investigation and salvage relating to watercraft disasters. Dozens of freighters and small sank during the mid-20th century golden age of shipping on the Great Lakes; this album is about nine of them." Sean Curtis Patrick is a visual artist, photographer, adventurer, and musician. He has created art, design, and music videos for artists like Alessandro Cortini, Benoit Pioulard, Bana Haffar, Richard Devine, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Rafael Anton lrisarri, and many others. ln 2018, Sean directed and sound tracked a documentary about the devastation of the island of Puerto Rico after the hurricanes of 2017. He is an alumnus of the Banff Centre Musicians in Residence program and debuted new solo material on a Japanese tour in late 2018. Sean has released albums on Day Dot, Beacon Sound, and Muzan Editions. He lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Benoit Pioulard weaves natural sounds and textures of decay into his vague-pop songs, colored with the lushness and unpredictability of field recordings. His numerous albums for Kranky, Beacon Sound, and Morr Music document an evolving relationship with guitar, voice, and frayed layers of fidelity, alternately melodic, muted, and diffuse. He resides in Seattle, Washington. Mastered by Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll. Includes download card and insert; Edition of 300.

CABARET CONTEMPORAIN Sequence Collective LP
Third LP of Cabaret Contemporain, French band (featuring Fabrizio Rat on keys) who use acoustic instruments (piano, guitar, bass, drums, contrabass) to produce a "hand-crafted" club music infused with techno. Inspired by Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, or Drexciya, the five members already had a career on classical scene; their idea is not to replay classical techno tunes but to create a new path for the electronic music. Two tracks feature Blackstrobe Records label boss, Arnaud Rebotini. "Ballaro", which opens Cabaret Contemporain's third album, begins with light percussions, which seem to turn on themselves, while being conveyed by reverberations close to dub. After a few minutes of convolutions, the piece gets out of hand, transporting the listener into a rich form of pulsating trance, irrigated by a soaring melody and punctuated by persistent piano tones. "La Selva"; more subdued, has the same energy, the track ending in an even more powerful way, a kind of paroxysm. Finally, the strangest and most minimal "Cactus", features a singular groove, which evokes the most brutal house from Chicago, or the sometimes obsessive techno from Detroit. Just like other tracks such as "Transistor" or "TGV", fueled by sweat and trance, Séquence Collective bears all the intensity of a techno cut for clubs' dancefloors. The only difference being that their music is not played with synths, drum machines, or software, but with acoustic instruments. The band is composed of five musicians and a sound engineer: Fabrizio Rat on piano, Giani Caserotto on guitar, Julien Loutelier on drums, Ronan Courty and Simon Drappier on double bass, and of course Pierre Favrez on console. They met at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire in the late 2000s. Through classical or contemporary music, jazz and improvisation, rock and experimentation, they share a common passion for the original and futuristic techno of the 1990s, that of Jeff Mills, Robert Hood or Drexciya, which they have decided to reinvent and further in their own way. Not as a simple stylistic exercise practiced by virtuoso musicians, but rather as a new path for modern music, and for their generation. "The original idea" they say, "was to make club music by hand, like craftsmen. Like in the early days of jazz, our band managed to transform itself into a kind of dancing machine."

VIVIANKRIST Morgenrode CD
As Vivian Slaughter morphs into Viviankrist, the music also changes from the intense cold desperation and raw nerve brutality of Gallhammer into a kaleidoscope of electronic sounds... still brutal and shattering, and still depicting soundscapes that close in on the darker side of the soul. A way to escape the dull pressure of a reality that sometimes seems to slip away into psych wards and chemicals. A reaction towards indifference. A shard of mentality released in wave after wave of fully analog sounds, sometimes disturbed by digital intrusions. The twilight and dawn of things to come from a renewed Viviankrist. BLANK, JEFF Landscapes Part 1. Cassette
Armed with just a backpack sub-woofer and an around-the-neck mobile modular, Jeff Blank set off to the outer Mongolian reaches, seeking out his parvita. His rippling sound vibrations resonated back and forth bringing love, fertility and devotion (all at the optimum level of 80db of course). Jeff's Landscapes Part 1. is a collection of new and previously unreleased music, all of which was recorded originally for his own lantern-lit, incensed bong cavern. But here big Jeff shifts the emphasis from the bong to the gong; one can hear a more experimental, electronics-focused sound.

O'ROURKE/NOT WAVING, JIM Side A/Side B 12"
In a dream hook-up for Diagonal, Jim O'Rourke reimagines material from the vaults of Alessio Natalizia AKA Not Waving and turns in a magisterial kosmiche synth-scape, backed with a sprawling slab of mazy rhythmic brilliance. O'Rourke has been a long-time admirer of Not Waving, and what started out as more of straight remix project quickly turned into a collaboration-at-a-distance, with Natalizia sending extra material and pushing O'Rourke to stray as far from the original material as possible. In both parts, he does him proud. 'Side A' renders an original chromatic synth knot into a spiralling, heavenly superstructure worthy of comparison with Popol Vuh, before the flip envelopes listeners in a hyper-baroque rave hall of mirrors ? all iridescent arps and irregular, automated pulses that refract palatial imaginary spaces. O'Rourke is, of course, a huge hero to Natalizia and the label, for his work with Sonic Youth, his countless collaborations with everyone from Keiji Haino to Tony Conrad, and the breath-taking breadth of his solo material. It's something of a coup/blessing/honour, therefore, for Diagonal to present this release with art/packaging from Guy Featherstone that does justice to this meeting of minds.

LOGOS Imperial Flood LP
Nexx grime mutant Logos checks the electric blue pulse of UK hardcore music on Imperial Flood, the stunning follow-up to his pivotal underground grime/electronica classic, Cold Mission (LDN 042CD/LP, 2013). Setting a new high-water mark for UK dance-related albums, Imperial Flood stakes a claim for Logos as a key dramaturgist of all things darkside, techy and schooled in the hardcore continuum. Where his debut album highlighted links between '90s Metalheadz D&B, Wiley's Devil mixes, and contemporary sci-fi cinema on its deliciously noirish soundstage, with Imperial Flood he expands that aesthetic in widescreen plasma HD. Pulling in broader influences from acid and dub techno, experimental computer music, D&B minimalism and the speculative literature of Jeff VanderMeer, Christopher Priest, Lando, and JG Ballard, the results vividly speak to the idea of a UK sound as a product of its brutalist, paranoid environment. Arriving ten years after his debut 12", and five after his seminal debut album, Imperial Flood comes after a significant period of creativity for Logos. Over the latter half of this decade he's been instrumental in new grime movements, co-running London's acclaimed club night, Boxed, whilst also diversifying his bonds with Mumdance and Shapednoise as part of improvising noise trio The Sprawl and most importantly with Different Circles; a label/club night catalyst responsible for boundary-pushing dances and a number of cult releases from Airhead, Rabit, Szare and Raime, not to mention his own EPs with Mumdance. It's not difficult to hear how this activity has fed Imperial Flood. From the bullet- time Matrix-style intro of "Arrival (T2 Mix)" through the hair-kissing weightless rave sensation of "Weather System Over Plaistow", he sucks listeners into a soundworld made all the more visceral and real through his exacting production, morphing from the sentinel-bot growls of "Marsh Lantern" to lush viscous/arid acid ambience in "Flash Forward (Ambi Mix)", and Dynamo-style dub on "Lighthouse Dub", before tagging in Mumdance on "Zoned In", and freezing the dance with commanding force on "Stentorian". Ultimately there's no shortage of imitators for this style, but Logos' combination of dedication to his craft and unique grasp of narrative places Imperial Flood in a rare echelon of UK music shared only by the likes of Burial and Raime. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. RIYL: Burial, Raime, Stingray, T++, Rabit, Mumdance.

SAVINA & ALDEMARO ROMERO, CARLO Simon Bolivar CD
Digitmovies release the complete edition CD of Carlo Savina and Aldemaro Romero's original sound track for the historical film Simon Bolivar. The film was presented at the XI Festival of Moscow (1969) where it won the Special Jury Prize, Carlo Savina and Aldemaro Romero work together on this symphonic score dominated by the charming sounds of Latin America. The historical figure of Simon Bolivar is emphasized through heroic passages for orchestra and chorus which alternate with a romantic love theme and music for the battle scenes. C.A.M. originally released a vinyl LP (SAG 9022) with eighteen stereo selections, which was reissued for the first time on CD in 1992 in the C.A.M. Soundtrack Encyclopedia series. Thanks to the stereo master tapes from the original recording session, which were kept in excellent condition, Digitmovies discovered about forty minutes of previously unreleased material such as alternative mixes and film versions. CIPRIANI, STELVIO Duri A Morire CD
Digitmovies present the complete edition of Stelvio Cipriani's original sound track for the action film Tough To Kill ("Duri A Morire") for the first time on CD. Stelvio Cipriani composed an OST where funk music, which was typical at the time, blends with Latin American sounds. The wild dance song in the opening credits is reprised in a fast version, a slow version with South American rhythms, and then contrasted with sad and dramatic strings. Electronic and rhythmic suspense pieces are perfect to describe the hidden dangers waiting for the protagonists of the story. There is no lack of piano pieces performed by the composer, Greek folk music, and military themes. For this CD, the restored stereo master tapes from the original recording session were used. Edition of 300.

There are two elements in the name of the instrument: shaku refers to an ancient measurement which is the equivalent of 30,3 cm; hachi means eight. Originally, shakuhachi thus refers to a flute that measures 1,8 shaku, that is, 54,5 cm. For this release, Master Fukuda chose a series of seven pieces from a repertoire dating back to the seventeenth century. These were originally performed by monks belonging to the Fuke sect of Zen Buddhism, who viewed their instrument as means for meditation. MY DISCO Environment LP
Environment is My Disco's uncompromising album of avant-industrial and synth despair for their staunch allies at Downwards. It was written and recorded during winter in Berlin, 2018, in a studio previously used by Einstürzende Neubauten, Keiji Haino, and Pan Sonic, and channels those heroes' uncompromising aesthetics into a radical departure from the band's previous releases, leaving behind gnashing guitars, cold metallic percussion, and gloomy pads reverberating in derelict, factory-like space. Gutting out the driving, math-y repetition of their prized early work (2010's Steve Albini-produced Young/You (PTYT 053CD, 2010) is a favorite of Karl O'Connor/Regis), the Melbourne-based trio now recall the ungodly offspring of Raime and Swans, operating with an increased appreciation of space, rhythm, and tone that will shock even the hardest to please explorers of avant-rock and industrial fault lines. In no uncertain terms, its eight tracks plumb the depths of a foul mood, strafing thru a series of antechamber-like stations like some inelegant beast encumbered with clanking manacles and ankle restraints. Thanks to the visceral, vivid nature of the recording and production, the devil lies in the synaesthetic sonic/visual detail, riddling a mostly wordless narrative that perfectly says it without saying it. Biting down first with the jagged metallic klang and gnawing drones of "An Intimate Conflict", the album continues to fetishize both bleeding-raw and cinematic themes through the torture chamber ambience of "Exercise In Sacrifice", and the red-lining tone poem "Act", leading into belly of the beast bass growls on "Rival Colour", before the dissonant, keening might of "No Permanence" calves off into a closer to end all closers, with the band's Cornell Wilczek feeding Buchla Easel tones into the empty tank strikes and fetid atmosphere of "Forever" with a febrile effect worthy of Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement. By any measure, Environment is one of Downwards' most singular albums, and a must-check for disciples of proper, unheimlich sonics. Mastered and cut to vinyl at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 500.

MENS & MATTHIJS KOUW, RADBOUD 3/4 2CD
In February 2017, Moving Furniture Records released the LP 1 by Radboud Mens and Matthijs Kouw. In October of 2018, ERS Records followed with the release of a double-CD with six long tracks with a total playing time of over two hours. The long drone tracks immerse you in frequencies that are slowly changing around you, revealing you all sides and details of a sonic sculpture that make you forget that music is a time-based art. With this release, simply titled 3/4, Mens and Kouw continue the exploration of long-form drone. By using a 12-meter long magnetic string and precisely tuned analog synthesis, Mens and Kouw create a rich tapestry of drones and slowly changing environments. To the careless listener, nothing much seems to happen. However, an attentive ear will reveal a rich variety of resonances, phase-differences and sonic artifacts. Starting as a deep and warm drone music the pieces gradually develops into a collage of textures and frequencies that are carefully moving in and out of the drone. This record is recorded live in the studio. Packaged in a three-panel carton sleeve; Edition of 300.Radboud Mens is a sound-artist, composer, and sound designer who is working with sound since 1982. He started creating noise-machines in 1988. In the early '90s he attached contact-microphones to dog's brushes that he used to destroy vinyl records by scratch-playing them and recorded the results. Since many years he builds his own acoustic instruments and sound-installations. Bass-recorder flutes, long magnetic string installations, drone-machines, and prepared guitars that are being played by transducers are used in live concerts. The recordings of these concerts are used in new compositions. Radboud Mens has worked with a broad variety of sound artists and composers, including Stephan Mathieu, Janek Schaefer, voice-artist Jaap Blonk, and Craig Ward (ex-Deus).Matthijs Kouw is a sound artist based in Utrecht (Netherlands). Using analog and digital synthesis, field recordings, and recordings of various objects, Matthijs has composed solo and collaborative pieces, as well as music for dance, film, theater, and installations. He's currently working primarily on long-form drone, partly in this ongoing collaboration with Radboud Mens.

GRAMM Personal Rock 2LP
Twenty years ago, Jan Jelinek's debut album Personal Rock was released by Source Records (1999). Under the pseudonym Gramm, it brings together eight tracks that have not been available on vinyl since their original release. Faitiche presents the re-release of the album: Personal Rock will appear as a double-LP, featuring the original cover artwork. Includes download code. What people wrote about Personal Rock two decades ago:"Situated somewhere between Jelinek's much loved Loop-Finding Jazz Records, Farben, Move D's Conjoint project and Atom Heart's most immersive work for Rather Interesting, it's a late night album full of subtle production tricks and melodic house structures that belong to the pre-millennial IDM heyday, but which transcend its overly-masculine templates." --Boomkat"A serene little masterpiece." --De:Bug"Though many producers have pushed forward the clicks-and-cuts style of experimental ambience developed by German experimentalists Oval (among others), few have been able to match their knack for making abstract cuts into pieces of undeniable beauty. Jan Jelinek's first LP as Gramm is one of the precious few, and it's obvious from the opener." --AllMusic"Organized in organic structures and minimal movements, the tracks get into utopian states and super-desirable moods, offering superior contentedness and dependable taste of the kind seldom sustained for a whole album. ASUNA & JAN JELINEK Signals Bulletin LP
Faitiche releases a new collaboration between the Japanese sound artist Asuna and Jan Jelinek: the album Signals Bulletin brings together joint improvisations and compositions made over a period of three years in Berlin, Kyoto, and Kanazawa. Asuna's meandering organ drones merge with Jelinek's pulsating synthesizer and field recording loops to create dense superclusters that span broad harmonic arcs. Includes download code.Jan Jelinek on the album (Berlin, 2018): "Watching the Japanese sound artist Asuna playing the organ, some people might be surprised. Asuna is no virtuoso flying over the keyboard in a rage. Instead, with the calm gestures of an office worker, he cuts strips of adhesive tape to the correct length before sticking them onto the keys of his instrument. In this way, large clusters of keys are held down, creating a dense and sustained range of frequencies, while the sound artist continually prepares further sets of keys or removes tape again. I have rarely seen a more convincing performance concept, with such a power to fascinate. I first met Asuna when we both gave a concert at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, his home city. He performed the organ drones as described above and I immediately knew I wanted to collaborate with him. Six years and five meetings later, we completed Signals Bulletin. The album includes both joint improvisations and compositions, recorded in Berlin, Kanazawa and Kyoto. Whether using prepared organ, Casio keyboards, or mechanical plastic toys, Asuna creates rich textures of sound that barely change over long stretches of time. It is a music without breaks. For a while, I was unsure how my loops made using modular synthesizers and live sampling fitted here -- until I realized the role I had to take in this duet: I would provide the rhythmically pulsating foundation over which his dense continuums could unfold. The result is harmonically drifting superclusters that put us into a meditation-like state. It can perhaps be compared to Automatic Writing -- a mode of creative expression floating somewhere between concentration and distraction . . . It is no coincidence that Asuna owns a collection of Doodle Art -- drawings jotted down during conversations or while talking on the phone . . . The artwork for Signals Bulletin features pictures from the collection, in this case sheets of paper from the pads provided in stationery shops to test out pens..."

DEODATO, EUMIR Os Catedraticos 73 CD
Far Out Recordings presents a reissue of Eumir Deodato's Os Catedraticos 73, originally issued in 1973. One of Brazil's most prolific artists, Deodato has participated in the creation of over 450 albums, racked up 16 platinum records, won a Grammy (and received two more nominations), and sold over 250 million records in the USA alone. Over the course of his career, he has written for, arranged music by and played with artists including Frank Sinatra, Tom Jobim, Kool & The Gang, Earth, Wind & Fire, Marcos Valle, Aretha Franklin, and Bjork, among others. At the height of Deodato's productivity in the early 70s, Os Catedraticos 73 was recorded between Rio de Janeiro and New York, featuring a Brazilian rhythm section comprising Azymuth drummer Ivan 'Mamão' Conti, percussion master Orlandivo, and Sergio Barroso on bass, while the horn section features some of the Big Apple's top players from the CTI in-house brass. A firm favorite with rare-groove enthusiasts and fans of Latin jazz alike, Deodato melds the musical sensibility of post-bossa nova Brazilian jazz with North American soul and funk, and the explosive Latin influences of '70s New York. Os Catedraticos 73 certainly swings harder than some of Deodato's earlier releases and opening track "Arranha Ceu" (Skyscrapers) is a euphoric dance floor classic, which has been lighting up clubs for years. With the blessing of Deodato himself, this official Far Out reissue has been remastered. Replica original artwork.

ARRUDA, LUCAS Onda Nova CD
Since the release of his two first albums on Favorite Recordings, Lucas Arruda has quickly established himself as one of the most talented young artist and composer from Brazil. His music is filled with a fusion of style, mixing influences and elements from his Latin musical background, with his genuine admiration for jazz, soul, pop, and funk music. In spring 2015, it was also not surprising to find Lucas Arruda back with a new LP called SOLAR (FVR 100CD/LP), receiving great support and feedback from international media and tastemakers. One of the highlights of the album was the song "Melt The Night", on which Lucas teamed up with legendary producer Leon Ware, reminding listeners of Ware's collaborations in the '80s with Marcos Valle when they perfectly merged together the sophisticated boogie and AOR touch from California, with the blazing sense of rhythm from Brazil. Favorite Recordings present Onda Nova, the third album by Lucas Arruda. Mostly written, composed and arranged by himself, Lucas however teams up on a few tracks with his old mate Fabricio di Monaco (Modo Solar), his brother and musical partner Thiago Arruda, who recently joined Ed Motta's live band, or Gaël Benyamin, aka Geyster, who brings his longtime "savoir-faire" and skills for writing and composing AOR and west coast music genre, and who share this deep passion with Lucas. Onda Nova is therefore pursuing the music direction set with SOLAR, mixing blue-eyed-soul, pop, soul, and Brazilian styles together, and influenced by the path of legendary Brazilian producer Lincoln Olivetti, who recorded some of the biggest stars of Brazilian music (Marcos Valle, Jorge Ben, Tim Maia). In Lucas words: "In this record I really wanted to honor Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti. They are the main influence on this record. We recorded the basic tracks for the album in the same studio that Lincoln Olivetti did his last works. So, this was very important to capture the true essence of Brazilian Funk/AOR tradition. Hope you guys enjoy it!" CD version includes a bonus track.

LANE, WILLIE Guitar Army of One LP
"Remastered reissue of the second brilliant Willie Lane LP released by Cord-Art, originally available (for a few moments, anyway) in 2012. Guitar Army of One is a bit less folk oriented than its predecessor, Known Quantity (FTR 413LP), in as much as there's more electricity and pedals being employed. But Willie's playing at this time was such a weird hybrid -- from quiet country blues passages to blown psychedelic bong-wash in the blink of an eye -- that no technique or approach was ruled out. Everything was permitted. Which led to some mind-bending results. As the album's title infers, Willie is on his lonesome this time with nary a collaborator in sight. But the sounds he layers on tape can be so complex (not unlike some of the work by his occasional running partner, Matt Valentine) that one gets the sense this the sound of Willie Lane playing duets with himself. Recorded in Philadelphia, shortly before he returned to Western Massachusetts to become, like the fictional Jesus, a carpenter, Guitar Army of One is a superbly satisfying spin. From the Heldon-esque vibe of 'Ill Star,' to the damaged canoodling of 'Rare Psych For Wayne' (which is also in the running for best Record Scum song title of the 21st century), there's a strange surprise around every damn corner. A monster of a record." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 500.

MAKO SICA Manifest Being LP
"A lot of people flipped out over how amazing Mako Sica's last album, Ronda (FTR 409LP, 2018), was. Ronda was a 2LP set whereupon the Chicago trio collaborated with legendary local percussionist Hamid Drake. This pairing seemed like a natural to us, but for some reason people have been woefully unaware of Mako Sica despite the fact they've been releasing killer records for a decade, and playing live shows that submerge your brain in a sonic soup that recalls the Sun City Girls at their most psychedelically Eastern. The band's approach to music feels almost alchemical. Trumpet, voice, guitar, drums and keys blend together in mysterious ways. The vocals are always more abstract than declarative, the guitar lines are sinewy, the rhythms roll and splash like a mirage oasis made real, and the trumpet arrives (when it does) sounding almost more like a shofar being played in a temple. The sound of Manifest Being is celebratory and so fully freaked you'll be soaking in it for years to come. The songs played are similar to the live set Mako Sika were polishing last year, and the results are stunning." --Byron Coley, 2019 Edition of 250.

GERE, DON Werewolves On Wheels LP
B-movie junkies, gather round and prepare yourselves for what could only be described as a cinematic speedball. Take a combined hit of two of the most potent strains of toxic cinema, dress it up in ritualistic robes, and make it dance to the beat of a stoned, motoric, country commune soundtrack. Like an exploit-o double-bill where both films merge into a single feature, this directorial debut by an ex-Roger Corman protégé and future Russ Meyer art director (another heady cocktail) is the product of one writing duo's fleeting time in the driving seat as the moviedrome marathon approached its dwindling finish line. Werewolves On Wheels emerged in 1971 in a climate where the B-movie genre of the previous two decades began to make way for the early glimpses of imported slasher films and video nasties. Entirely out of popular context in 1971, the soundtrack music of Don Gere (Curt Boettcher, Kid Dynamite, Don & Stevie) would perhaps reveal him as the most versatile actor involved in the whole production. Until this point, Don Gere had been a pop folk songwriter and a country music devotee, but while riding with the werewolves, Don Gere became a disjointed psych rock stoner making ritualistic commune country with more coincidentally in common with Germany's emerging krautrock scene or the more localized stoner psych of Skip Spence (whose radically ahead of its time LP OAR (1969) was recognized by Columbia Records as their lowest selling record in the company's history). Imagine guitarist Sandy Bull jamming with Munich's Amon Düül or some Swedish prog outfits like Träd, Gräs Och Stenar or a sedated Kebnekaise. In comparison to the Curb Records/Davie Allan scores, for films like Wild Angels (1966), Devil's Angels (1967), Thunder Alley (1967), and Born Losers (1967) (often released on Curb's own Sidewalk or Tower Records), the new music made by Don Gere, only three years down the line, sounds like it's from an entirely different generation... "Pre-certified biker psych from the hillbilly Haxan. Amazing!" --Sean Canty (Demdike Stare)

HOOKER, WILLIAM Cycle Of Restoration CD
"Revolutionary drummer William Hooker leads a new trio with Mark Kirschenmann, trumpet, and Joel Peterson, bass. Recorded live in one take at Trinosphes in Detroit, Cycle Of Restoration starts at the bottom with no apparent leverage, in an hour of constant upheaval overturning the possibilities of music. Deceptively serene out of the zero code, you soon realize that your mind has been re-tuned to a new understanding of reality: reach into the part that psilocybin touches, without acid, and see the same tables, the same trees, the same windows and walls but now knowing that while these endure the human structures that imprison the self will fall away. Leading from the kit with long streams of felted cymbals, Hooker reveals a new chapter of his eternal unfolding, one that will surprise even those who have followed him these 40-some years. Cycle Of Restoration is a revelation of renewal with SE MI pillars Kirschenmann and Peterson filling peals, clangs and scrapes. We ascend. Climb. We keep on walking this way up, realizing this progress. Where do we go when we reach the top? How do we entertain the idea of a reality that moves in a circle? Not gone, just unfolded. Cycle Of Restoration. Revolutionary, for the mind, means we revolve. These sounds bring us full circle."

TURNING JEWELS INTO WATER Map Of Absences LP
"Drawing from the vodou religion, Val recreates the ancient rhythm and pulse of Haiti through digital beats, while Momin has developed an original blend of electro-acoustic beats, drawing together the improvisational traditions in Jazz and Indian folk music. Together, they employ cutting-edge musical tools such as acoustic drums outfitted with Sensory Percussion triggers, Force Sensing Resistor (FSR) drum pads and Smart Fabric MIDI Controllers, still emphasizing the ritual aspects of creating music in the digital realm. 'Our full-length record, Map Of Absences is a reflection on the regressive state of human rights, deepening refugee crises and the worsening impacts of climate change worldwide. Imagine a world where refugees of color are free to cross borders, LGBTIA people are treated fairly and respectfully, and environmental healing technologies are widespread. These ideas are unfortunately absent from our current reality. We say 'absent' instead of 'forgotten' as the latter implies an instance of memory or a record of those things having existed. Musically, we drew inspiration from artists such as DJ Lag, Nidia, DJ Rashad, Nihiloxica, and Epic B amongst our other varied global influences. For the album artwork we tapped Marissa Malik, a UK based artist whose work evokes the mystical and empowered mythical beings. For remixes, we returned to Kenyan maverick Slikback (Hakuna Kulala) and also approached PlayPlay (who ran the legendary 'Party Illegal' in Durham NC for years) and the modular-synth wielding producer Nueve Vidas from Mexico City.' -Turning Jewels Into Water"

Selected Tracks 2. 1995-1998 is a double album with a new selection of tracks recorded by Esplendor Geométrico between 1995 and 1998. This is the second part of Selected Tracks, the first one was published in 2015 (GR 2136LP). Ten of the thirteen tracks appear for the first time on vinyl, and some rarities only released in very limited CDR editions during the '90s and without distribution, are also included. Esplendor Geométrico are pioneers and masters of rhythmic industrial music since their formation in Madrid in 1980, enjoying international cult. In this double album, you will find machine and hypnotic rhythms, metallic sounds, tribal sonorities, distortion, collages with voices, which also show their influence on the current trends of industrial techno. The songs have been chosen from albums like Polyglophone (CD-only release in 1997), EN-CO-D-ESPLENDOR (published in Japan only on CD in 1998), and exclusive live tracks that do not have studio versions: "Al Asalto", "Nuevo Frente", "Elektrozavod", or "Ciudad Électrica". Also included are three tracks from the Syncrotron EP (1998). Gatefold sleeve; Edition of 700."When I think of the word industrial... I think machines, gears, factories with tall smoke stacks. Esplendor Geométrico means exactly that to me. Hard minimal rhythmic machine music that grinds like a huge device that is cutting metal girders for large buildings. Though most would quote bands like Throbbing Gristle, Neubauten and Coil as being the truest form of industrial, the music of Esplendor by far best describes the word industrial when applied to music." --Adam-X, 2004

VA Latinameriska Volume 3 LP
When Gran Quilombo Discos started planning on compiling '60s and '70s songs influenced by Jamaican rhythms by different artists from the Latin American continent, and published the first two volumes of Latinameriska (QUILOMBO 001LP and QUILOMBO 002LP, 2013), the label didn't think they would be able to continue with the series. However, this period of time has allowed them to continue with the "archaeologic work" of the search and capture that every collector has in its blood. There's no bigger pleasure than being on a trip and going through a flea market, shop or just exploring the web and coming across a gem to thicken your record collection. Likewise, it's also a big satisfaction showing those discoveries and making them available to other collectors (so they can start their own hunt) or to the general public which would simply dance and enjoy them, which is enough. Thus, this record is the fruit of that passion and has no different goal to the previous volumes that you listen, dance and enjoy this "piece" of Jamaica born in Latin American territory. You'll find artists you'll already know from previous volumes, such as Las Cuatro Monedas or Conjunto Habana, together with real rarities such as Aristides Paz or The King's Trials... With covers of Jamaican classics ("Ritmo Del Alma") and original tracks ("Cuando Tú Me Quieras"), from vintage ska ("Lucky Lucky") to reggae with skinhead roots ("Doble Barril")... but always with the same essence. And not to lose a good habit we close with a new ghost track, from Colombia in this case and merging a Jamaican music classic with other classic rhythms. Enjoy it one more time! Also features Malvicino, El Klan, Leo Dan, Los Teen Agers, The Summits, Los Palmeras, Los Chijuas, Marimba Orquesta La Perla Del Soconusco, and Palito Ortega.

VA Latinameriska Volume 4 LP
The journey of Latin American artists from the '60s and '70s with a Jamaican style has a new stop: Latinameriska's fourth volume. And even though it may sound like a cliché we Gran Quilombo Discos would like to say this is the best installment of the series without a doubt. Here's why: You'll get to learn about unknown bands (from out of the Jamaican scene like Los Creyentes De B.C. or studio ones like The Stars), get almost impossible to find tunes (from Rosario or Los Costeños) or listen to covers as good as the original (hurray for Los Robbin's). Or with sounds that enrich the cover (those amazing Calypso touches of René Santos or the cumbia flavor of Carmen Rivero). The richness of "Latin Jamaica" has no limits, and from north-to-south and east-to-west the treasure chest keeps growing with gems of all kinds. These precious stones are all different and all highly valuable -- from Jamaican beat to early reggae or calypso -- with covers that range not only from Jamaican scene classics to jazz and soul. With such good raw materials and the label's culinary expertise, it was impossible not to cook a delicatessen to be consumed with the ears. And once again, there's a ghost track at the end, from Panamá this time and giving an Antillean flavor to another Jamaican classic. Enjoy this new installment and be calm, it won't be the last one! Also features Hugo Blanco, Su Arpa Viajera Y Su Conjunto, Julián Ber't, Carmen Rivero Y Su Conjunto, René Santos Y Sus Estrellas, Roberto Delgado And His Orchestra, Ely Combo, Las Cuatro Monedas, Los Yorsy's, and As Exorcistas.

LOUISIANA RED At Onkel Po's Carnegie Hall Hamburg 1977 2CD
Blues at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall. Louisiana Red was one of the most famous blues guitarists, known for his unique style. By the way, the stage name "Louisiana Red" (there have been other names as well) refers to a hot sauce customary in the delta-state of Mississippi. Customary, just as the extremely archaic blues of which Louisiana Red has always been a paradigmatic representative; this was also the case on that particular evening in June 1977, when he, the blues import from across the Atlantic, was alone on stage of "Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall" in Hamburg-Eppendorf, accompanied only by his guitar and his mouth-organ. This legendary concert is one of the highlights of the Onkel Pö series. Recorded on June 14, 1977 at Onkel Pö's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany; Recorded by NDR Hamburg. FINGER/JAMES PLOTKIN/MIA ZABELKA, BENJAMIN Pleasure-Voltage LP
Benjamin Finger, James Plotkin, and Mia Zabelka craft a mesmerizing sonic world that buzzes and drones, glitches, and slithers, eventually careening into unexplored musical territory. Pleasure-Voltage was born in the mind (and studio) of Benjamin Finger -- a composer, electronic music producer, DJ, photographer, and film-maker based in Oslo, Norway who in recent years has become quite a prolific artist, expanding his stylistic palette from piano miniatures and off-kilter pop experiments to lysergic, dream-like sound collages spiced with gentle warmth and sublime melody. These ingredients are also characteristic on this latest work where Finger set the musical frame before passing it on to his inspired collaborators: Mia Zabelka who for decades now has been involved in countless projects, be it as musician (violin/electronics), curator, or founder of the international sound art center klang.haus and who has worked with, amongst others, John Zorn, Fred Frith, Electric Indigo, Robin Rimbaud (Scanner), Dälek or Phil Minton. And last but not least there's James Plotkin who entered the scene with his first band Old Lady Drivers (or O.L.D.) on Earache in 1987 and later was a member of Khanate (with, amongst others, Stephen O'Malley) while also exploring the areas of dark ambient and electronics by working with or remixing Scorn/Mick Harris, K.K: NULL, and more. On Pleasure-Voltage, which had its live-premiere at the Rewire festival 2018, the trio crafts a mesmerizing sonic world that buzzes and drones, glitches and slithers, eventually careening into unexplored musical territory somewhere between ambient/drone/psychedelia. Personnel: Benjamin Finger - synthesizers, piano, field recordings, electronic devices, alien objects; James Plotkin - electric guitar, granular synthesis; Mia Zabelka - E-violin, electronic devices, alien objects. Mixed by James Plotkin. Mastered and vinyl cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Artwork/drawing by Sverre Malling.

ELLIS, ALTON Treasure Isle 1966-1968 CD
Alton Ellis is one the finest soulful voices to come out of Jamaica. As well as writing hit singles himself, he could make a cover version known as a foreign tune sound like a Jamaican reggae tune with the greatest of ease. As the more upbeat rhythms of the earlier "ska" period began to slow down around the turn of 1966 some say due to the extreme heatwave that hit the island of Jamaica that year, slower rhythms suited the people to groove to at the various sound systems and dances. This also allowed the singers to express themselves more and allow the song to shrine through. No one did this better than Alton Ellis. Alton Ellis (b.1944, Kingston, Jamaica) started off singing at an early stage as part of a duo with singer Eddie Perkins and recorded for both Studio One and Randy's as Alton and Eddy and had a massive hit with the song "Muriel". The singing pair went their separate ways with Alton going solo with Studio One and being a much in demand voice also recorded with Duke Reid's Treasure Isle Studio as Alton Ellis and The Flames. As stated earlier, as the beat slowed down the top singers shined through, and Alton Ellis reigned supreme. One of his tunes featured on this set, "Get Ready (Do The Rocksteady)", even gave this period in reggae's history its name "rocksteady". It's this fantastic period in rocksteady, 1966 to 1968, that Kingston Sounds feature on this release. This set carries all the big hits "Ain't That Loving You", "Girl I've Got A Date", "Cry Tuff", alongside many more classics. All the cut at Treasure Isle songs that really defined the era. So sit back and enjoy the Rocksteady sound at its finest. Enjoy the set. Features Phillis Dillion. CD version includes three bonus tracks.

WEVAL The Weight CD
Straight in the wake of their eponymous debut LP (KOMP 131CD/KOM 352LP, 2016), Weval return to Kompakt with their sophomore album, The Weight, breaking their pop-mellow, nostalgia-friendly style further out in the open as they arrive "at this place again were everything felt spontaneous, new and exciting, like we had in the beginning". Orbiting around that ever-luminous yet wistful melodic halo that surrounds their music, this second full-length effort sweeps an extra-wide and languidly woven palette of emotions and moods, making for a uniquely ambitious and generously colored mosaic of sound. If the recording sessions "often started grumpy and emotionless" by Harm and Merijn's own admission, the pair was "surprised by the joy it gave us, which can be compared to the emotions we felt back in the first days of making music together"; subsequently reconnecting with that fresh, naïve feeling of "absolute creative freedom" they were after. The album is also the fruit of a whole new working process for them -- more playful and unpredictable -- which saw them switch from "guitars lying around to piano, onto our own synths and the most cheap quirky toy synths you can imagine", and involved "recording all of our own samples, voice and almost every instrument out of the box. We've always wanted a narrative for the album, and finding the right order perhaps took the most effort." As a whole, The Weight breathes with that transformative richness, free of limits and rules. Amidst this collection of songs and instrumentals that live by Weval's singularly positive take on music -- one that can "lift you up, and make you feel hopeful without being necessarily straight out 'happy'" as they define it, the title-track and lead single stays true to the duo's dynamic approach, putting on a fine balance of floor and dream inducing adaptability that sound engineer David Wrench (Frank Ocean, The XX) subtly made palpable. There's heavy showers of funk drops pouring from endless bars of thunderstorm clouds and laid-back riffs beating a restrained poolside-party kind of pulse, but also sensual vocals rising from beneath the sheets and rueful polaroid-filtered ambiences to soundtrack all possible moments in life -- from the most euphoric to those when music seems the only viable healing potion. Weightless and airy, yet texturally dense and widely magnetic overall, The Weight is a synthesis of the duo's multi-angle take on electronics: blissed-out, heartening and infinitely free.

FATAMORGANA Terra Alta LP
Formed in Barcelona in the summer of 2017, Fatamorgana sprang to life from the hearts and minds of Patrycja Anna Proniewska and Louis Harding. What began as a bedroom project of sorts (monophonic synthesizers, four-track cassette recordings), the project soon blossomed into a functional live unit. Following a self-released cassette single at the start of the year, the pair spent the latter part of 2018 touring continental Europe and the west coast of North America. Recorded at Holyrook Estudio in Barcelona, Terra Alta is the group's first full-length effort. The verse-chorus songwriting, the raw set-up of two-synths-and-a-beat, and the primal rhythms nod to the duo's background in punk. But Terra Alta has a pensive and mesmeric quality, provided in part by an outstanding production job (Studio AS One, Warsaw), but also by lyrics concerning themselves with themes of love, time travel, reflections on the future, the power of imagination and the mysteries of the natural world. If pressed for musical references the band could be pin-pointed somewhere between early Depeche Mode, Young Marble Giants, The Human League and a rounder-around-the-edges Borghesia. Dreamlike synthesizers and echoed voices circle around danceable rhythms, inviting one to simultaneously contemplate and move one's body. Be teleported from the majesty of nature to the glow of the discotheque. RIYL: Belgrado, The Love Triangle, The Shitty Limits, Lux.

WORLD BRAIN Peer 2 Peer LP
Pop was promised to deliver the pleasures of pop; nothing less or more. What does a pop utopianism look like? Utopia is no-place; utopianism is concerned with the invisible potentials that sleep in the interstices of our world. Fenster's Lucas Ufo, who records as World Brain, is preoccupied with the ethers that surrounds us -- he lists among his inspirations for Peer 2 Peer, sitting at the windows and "watching WiFi enter the room". As the album's title suggests, this pop utopianism is often concerned with the romantic potentials of digital technology, and its central image, the network -- while the music often invokes the studios of the 1980s, the themes are more suggestive of the web-positivity of the '90s and early '00s. "Network" is a three-minute guitar solo impersonating those WiFi signals. "Hyptertext" call the links that weave our experience of the internet one of "the true modern things". "3beat" imagines two computers falling in love, discussing the things that matter to them. Opener "The Pangean Anthem", by its name (after the no-place that was every-place of the first supercontinent) and infectious cheer, is a wordless declaration of intent for what follows. Lead single "Made U Cry", which made a splash in early 2018, is addressed to Satan, the original utopian, possessed of the prettiest smile. "Everybody Dies" featuring übercrooner and frequent Mansions And Millions guest Sean Nicholas Savage, is a kind of thanato-utopianism, a blissful, mellow meditation on the grand egalitarianism of mortality. "It's All True", driven by a maddeningly infectious riff emphasized with a Windows 95 system "ding", simply lists well-known and common phenomena, lost in wondrous awe at the simple fact of existence. In a similar mood, "Bubble Tea" asks "isn't it sweet to live on this sphere, isn't it wonderful?" Even the album's most melancholy moment, "Besides", takes a cosmic perspective, dwelling on the parallels between the proverbial grain of sand and the grains in a lonesome bowl of rice, meditating on the holographic quality of mood. Both sweet and silly, wistful and whimsical, Peer 2 Peer is always affirmative. Where others might mine the past as a cheap source of irony or nostalgia, World Brain has a made a clearing equidistant between then and now, a no-place in which to build a pop utopia in miniature. Includes printed inner sleeve; Includes download code.

DUKE Uingizaji Hewa LP
Nyege Nyege Tapes deliver another volley of breathless Singeli from Tanzania, this time the vinyl debut of Duke showcasing the sound of Pamoja Records, following multiple zingers from the scene's core Sisso Studios. Yet again making practically everything else seem pedestrian and tepid by contrast, Duke's take on Dar Es Salaam's Singeli style is ruthlessly fast and rugged, crammed with colorful samples and, quite crucially, loaded with a pair of blistering vocal tracks starring MCZO & Don Tach, and Dogo Lizzi, respectively. In Uingizaji Hewa the tempos thrillingly tilt over the 200bpm mark, but they're held in check with a clutch of slower instrumentals written in Duke's newer hip hop Singeli style. When he goes fast, dancers will know about it in the likes of "Naona Laaah" featuring machine gun rapid rhythms somehow matched for pace by MCZO & Don Tach, and again in the pedal-to-the-metal recklessness of "M Lap" starring Dogo Lizzi switching up from dancehall bark to fasssst-chat styles that put Daddy Freddy to bed. But those hi-NRG bombs are only half the story. The rest of the LP shows off Duke's wicked way with a hook and the diversity of his drum programming in highlights ranging from the PC Music-compatible bounce of "Sing4444444", to the cascading chromatic licks and slow/fast suss of "Duke 4", the joyful dervish of "Duke Bit Puyo", and two dizzying pieces with spiraling, Bollywood-style vocal samples that close the record with a blinding flourish. KUNGENS MAN Chef LP
Kungens Män from Stockholm, Sweden has been around as a musical unit since 2012. The roots as friends go way back though. Noises, impulses, fuck-ups, and improvised jams have been recorded since day one and some of them have been put out on record. This is the first one on Riot Season. While the previous album Fuzz På Svenska (2018) on the German label Adansonia Records was somewhat jazzy and pretty introverted, this new one Chef is more rock and to the point, but still in the exploring, heady way typical of Kungens Män. Oh, Chef doesn't have anything to do with cooking -- it means "boss" or "chief" in Swedish. The inspiration comes from the drone, the rattle of the loose screw, the circuit failure of the effects, the phat-ness of the Moog and from the very diverse wiring of a bunch of middle-aged Swedish freaks. Kungens Män never plan the next musical move -- it presents itself. Sometimes the costume sewn is really ugly, but somehow there's always room for the sublime as you turn it inside out. Chef is the most effective Kungens Män album yet. Four pieces, one LP. Four different moods, the Kungens Män sound distilled. Dive in, walk around, start over again. It never stops. RATKJE, MAJA S.K. Sult CD
Composed, performed, mixed, and produced by Maja S. K. Ratkje, Sult is based upon Ratkje´s music created for the ballet Sult ("Hunger") by director Jo Strømgren for the Norwegian National Ballet. This is a departure from the records and live settings normally associated with Ratkje, as we find her placed behind a modified, wiggly and out-of-tune pump organ, singing songs and improvising. Metal tubes, PVC tubes and a wind machine were built into the organ; guitar strings, a bass string, a resin thread, metal and glass percussion and a bow are also utilized. With little or no previous experience, she had to learn to play the thing live, using both hands and feet at the same time as singing. Maja played live on stage during every performance, but later modified and recorded the music especially for this record, with Frode Haltli co-producing. It´s a freestanding document, an entity of its own, but the atmosphere is very much the same as in the play: the dusty city of Kristiania in the 19th century, the street noises and the sounds.

KRYSTAL KLEAR Euphoric Dreams/Miyoki 12"
How do you go on after a feast like The Division (RB 072EP, 2018)? You can do magic with the leftovers! In any case, Krystal Klear doesn't need to worry about that. Having cracked the DNA code of "dance music" on his first EP for Running Back, this 12" feels alive, floats upstream and fires on all cylinders. "Euphoric Dreams" is the musical incarnation of an Alexander Shulgin formula (your spine gets tingled all the way including a wonderfully prolonged break down). "Miyoki", on the other hand, makes every pair of knees tingle. A relentless bass line and a deadly snare are enough to force almost any kind of dancefloor into submission.

SMALLPEOPLE Afterglow 2x12"
2x12" version. Smallpeople's debut album, Salty Days (SMALL 005CD/LP), was released in 2012. In the time since, much has changed in the world of dance music. have remained dedicated to their unapologetically reassuring vision of house music as-a-whole. Smallpeople, as well as expanding their Smallville Records shop in Hamburg's St. Pauli, has continued to act on their direct-line to the beating heart of house music at some of the world's finest clubs, including their monthly residency at Hamburg's legendary Golden Pudel. Of course, all these maneuvers sit alongside their work running Smallville Records, and its sub-label, Fuck Reality. Given Julius Steinhoff and Dionne's stewardship in filtering the crème de la crème of house music from the underground and into clubs across Europe and further afield, it would be particularly cliched on this occasion to stress that their second record is "eagerly awaited". In their own way, they have already given us enough great records. But with Afterglow, there's another great record, and more importantly, one carved directly from the hearts and record collections of two individuals whose understanding of dance music appears to be some sort of blissful second-nature. This sort of earned assuredness is immediately established on opening track "Magic Interference", a rolling, deep, and somewhat jazzy house number with tumbling keys and sky-walkin' chords. This steady, blissful vibe sets the tone for the first half of the record, as the pair patiently unfold their touchstones; equal parts Chicago ("Hearts at Whole"), Detroit ("All States of Dawn"), and Hamburg, famed for it's transatlantic routes via groundbreaking clubs such as Front, it's a crystalline distillation of a sound that's earnest, but never nostalgic. Intuitive selectors as they are, Smallpeople pick the ideal moment to up the pace for the home-run, defined here by the spiky, disco bassline of "Beyond", an unexpected ingredient that Steinhoff and Dionne nevertheless manage to diffuse into space dust. It's a brilliant wrong footing before the wide-eyed, warm-hearted anthem-in-waiting, "Sonic Winds", a wonderfully cheeky glimpse of Smallpeople as peak time heroes, before the acid-flecked shuffle of "Benevolent Reciever" reveals their spiritual soundboy side. In conclusion, title track "Afterglow" surmises the generous spirit at the heart of Smallpeople's operation; a sensitive and irresistible ode to record stores, parties, community, and discovery. So, worth that seven year wait? Who cares about time, when your music is this timeless.

DEAF CENTER Low Distance LP
Low Distance is Deaf Center's third full-length studio album and perhaps the most focused effort by the Norwegian duo to date. After their last record Owl Splinters (2011), which was quite an eclectic endeavor, Erik K Skodvin and Otto A Totland draw their sound back into something quieter and more minimal. The record starts with a piece of sweeping analog electronics. It's a spacious, yet dynamic opener that leads directly into the static tones and piano motifs of "Entity Voice", which balances a new sense of abstraction with the classic Deaf Center sound. It´s warm and close while sounding like it's set in the outer horizon. Overall, Low Distance feels both alien and familiar with its atonal synths, close pianos, and drowned-out noises. After meeting in studio for the first time since 2011, the recordings came out of a three-day session in 2017. It was then mixed at both EMS Stockholm and at Erik's home studio over a longer period to create a blend of deeply layered as well as stripped-down pieces. Both Erik and Otto have been active individually since their last meeting as Deaf Center: Otto has released two solo piano albums, while Erik has furthered his descent into musical abstraction both under his own name and as Svarte Greiner. It's long overdue to hear them connect their personalities into something new. Low Distance is a welcome return replete with beauty, mystery, and uncertainty. Full tone cover artwork; Includes printed inner sleeve. Includes download code.

They call her "The Rose of the Nile", "The Queen of the Nile", "The Daughter of the Nile", or even "The 4th Pyramid of Egypt" since she's known as the greatest Egyptian singer of all times. Om Kalsoum's mythical life story of a poor peasant girl who grew up to become the face of Egypt is a 20th-century fairytale. Almost half a decade after her death the power of her music and singing is still moving the hearts of millions of people worldwide. At the end of her overwhelming career she was introduced to the young but brilliant composer Baligh Hamdy who wrote this 30-minute lasting monument for her in 1969. In the footsteps of Mohamed Abdel Wahab, the godfather of Egyptian modern music, Baligh Hamdy refreshed the classical Egyptian orchestra sound with the addition of stylish instruments like electric guitar (Omar Khorshid), organ (Hany Mehanna), accordion, and horns that were adapted to the eastern tonal system. VA Wire Recorded Pieces: Precocious Noise and Early Electronica Pt. 2 LP+CD
Wire Recorded Pieces: Precocious Noise and Early Electronica Pt. 2 is a compilation for those who are not familiar with the fascinating world of primal electronica, noise, sound design, industrial, avant-garde, tape-music, etc. This set hopes to be the gateway to a completely new revolutionary sound experience, proving what John Cage predicted in the 1930s: "'I believe the use of noise to make music will continue and increase until we reach a music produced through the aid of electrical instruments which will make available for musical purposes any and all sounds that can be heard." Including a track recorded in 1921, almost a hundred years ago, and ending in the early 1960s, this selection includes artists of very different nationalities such as Egypt, USA, Hungary, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Sweden, France, and even the USSR. It represents everything new and revolutionary that we have come to expect since the beginning of the postmodern era. These are relics with much to say to the contemporary listener as they sound impossibly way ahead of their and our time(s). Revolutionary since much of the included material did and still does push the very definition of what music is. Here are demonstrations of techniques and sound systems that shaped modern music as we know it today. These are the first examples ever to loop a track, play it in reverse or use a host of other effects which are all so common tools for musicians of today. Songs are sequenced to give a coherent and surprisingly easy way to enjoy and appreciate this music field that can be baffling -- in order to give the listener some of the most multilayered (in every sense of the word) experience. Thanks to 21st century advance techniques, every track here has a low noise floor, which has been achieved without the loss of palpability or dynamic range. These recordings sound fantastic: fresh, jarring, groundbreaking and adventurous. Features Johanna M. Beyer, Bengt Hambraeus, Franco Evangelisti, Remi Gassmanny, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Halim El-Dabh, Pierre Henry, Else Marie Pade, Herbert Eimert, The Blue Men, György Ligeti, Giselher Klebe, and Velimir Khlebnikov. VA Brazil Primitivo Vol.1: Rhythms, Legends & Styles (1899-1963) LP+CD
The great majority of Brazilian music compiled, notoriously abroad, always has been focused on the same stereotypes, and musical genres as trad-samba and recycled bossa nova. Until now! Sound Miracle Recordings presents the first volume of the Brazil Primitivo collection, titled Brazil Primitivo Vol. 1: Rhythms, Legends & Styles (1899-1963). This 16-track vinyl serves not only to repair this huge gap but as well to celebrate certain rhythms, creators and sui generis styles that had been forgotten, and overlooked, at least for six decades. Have you heard about lundu, chorinho, capoeira, samba de roda, xaxado or toada? Likely not, and this is a spectacular chance to dive into the likes of neglected genius as Pixinguinha, Ataulfo Alves, Monsueto, and many others. Ancient rhythms and colorful sounds as you never heard before. Also, this 16-track album (with two extra tracks on its bonus CD) includes, allegedly, the first Brazilian musical recording made in 1899, and celebrities such as Carmen Miranda (yes, the pin-up actress) and Raul Seixas (yes, the all-time greatest Brazilian rock icon) on his very first musical adventure recorded under the alias Raulzito E Os Panteras. STORY, DEXTER Bahir LP
Dexter Story is an artistic spirit in the truest sense of the phrase. From his work as a multi-instrumentalist for acts like the Sa-Ra Creative Partners, to his management role with Snoop Dogg and his turn producing Daymé Arocena's 2017 album Cubafonia, Story understands the business from every conceivable angle. Initially inspired by the music and cultures pervasive throughout the Horn of Africa, Story translated his experiences there into his previous album Wondem (SNDW 076CD/LP, 2015), followed closely by the single "Wejene Aola" featuring jazz luminary Kamasi Washington (SNDW 7022EP), both on Soundway Records. If Wondem was a brief glance into Story's new creative vision, Bahir is a pinpoint refinement of that purpose, the fine-tuning and expanding of the world he created on his Soundway debut. On Bahir, Story steps in front of those influences and melds his world into the one he fell in love with so strongly while in Africa. One way in which he's done so is by incorporating musicians from both sides of this coin. LA luminaries are featured throughout, as are African contemporaries he encountered throughout his travels. Sudan Archives gives a show-stealing vocal performance on "Gold", while the Ethiopian producer Endeguena Mulu adds impenetrable and psychedelic texture to the album's title track. So Bahir finds the polymath musician not stuck between two worlds, but as a member of both. We get Ethiopian jazz tonalities, Tuareg grooves, ekista dance rhythms, Afro-funk, Somalian soul, and forays into more contemporary jazz rhythms, too. Angelenos like Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Josef Leimberg give the record its backbone, while African artists like the Ethiopian singer Hamelmal Abate give Bahir its glimmer and shine. Also features Kibrom Birhane, Jimetta Rose, Haile Supreme, and Marie Daulne. For fans of: Sudan Archives, Kamasi Washington, Laraaji, Carlos Niño, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Zap Mama, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Josef Leimberg.

KOLETZKI, OLIVER Schneeweiss X CD
Over the years, Berlin has been cited as Oliver Koletzki's main point of reference and, more importantly, his endless source of inspiration. His albums Grossstadtmarchen (SVT 037CD, 2009) and Grossstadtmarchen 2, released in two parts (SVT 075LP/SVT 080LP, 2012), are whole-hearted tributes of the German capital, as its importance is continuously hinted and charted. Friedrichshain, one of Berlin's vibrant districts, has always held a special place in Oliver's heart. This is where he started out when he first moved to the city, and this is where he lives now. Kreuzberg's wall paintings adorn Stil Vor Talent's cover sleeves and host their headquarters. There are little to no corners in the city that haven't brought a spark of inspiration into the mix. The Schneeweiss compilation series, now at its eighth installment, is built as a form of tribute to all these particles, tied in together into a series of carefully curated tracks. Each compilation stands at the intersection of the musical and cultural surroundings most prominent of their respective times, acting both as a reminder as well as a timeless sound capsule for the years to come. Schneeweiss X features: Rampa, Danito & Athina, Lunar Plane, Niko Schwind, Rauschhaus & Peer Kusiv, Prismode & Solvane, Modeplex, Candy Man, Ikarius & Dhakka, pølaroit, and Malandra Jr..

VA An Anthology of Greek Experimental Electronic Music 1966-2016 2LP
Double LP version. Includes two inserts. An Anthology of Greek Experimental Electronic Music 1966-2016 aspires to map the heterogenous landscape of Greek experimental electronic music in all its contextual, sociopolitical, geographical and aesthetic disparity. With a single exception: it zeroes in on post-80s music. It comprises works of very different kinds by composers of all sorts of backgrounds that, still, can be thought of, as both "Greeks" and "experimentalists". Experimental electronic music is generally expected to be highly variegated, especially when examined in a breadth of several decades, and with respect to all sorts of artistic, academic, subcultural, and other influences. What is not so obvious, however, is that the very notion of Greekness, as well as its contextual and historical offshoots, are highly diversified, too. This anthology is an attempt to map the various kinds of experimental music that has been produced by Greeks over the last few decades. More, it is also an attempt to delineate different understandings of what "Greek" or "experimental" may stand for, by means of zeroing in on the numerous, often overlapping, realities and micro-scenes that are associated with the former. Double-CD version includes 20-page booklet.Features Anestis Logothetis, Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga, Panayiotis Kokoras, Christos Michalakos, Free Piece Of Tape, Ilan Manouach, Anastasis Grivas, Theodoros Zioutos, Nicolas Malevitsis, Ilios, Michalis Adamis, Fani Konstantinidou, Scizhic InzC, Georgia Spyropoulos, Panayiotis Velianitis, Iannis Xenakis, and Marinos Koutsomichalis.

The Noise Of Art: Works for Intonarumori contains seven compositions, created by the Opening Performance Orchestra, Blixa Bargeld, Luciano Chessa, and Fred Möpert. All the pieces relate to the theme of futurism and employ intonarumori, instruments invented and used more than a century ago by the Italian Futurists in their noise compositions. CD version includes 16-page booklet."In antiquity, life was nothing but silence.""Today noise reigns supreme over human sensibility."The Art of Noises, pertained to the entire 20th century. Published in 1913, in response to Francesco Balilla Pratella's Manifesto of Futurist Musicians (1911), Luigi Russolo's text encompassed the fundamental ideas for the new music of the modern age. Radical ideas required original compositional approaches, as well as new types hof instruments -- hence the futurists opted for the intonarumori. The two quotations prompted the Opening Performance Orchestra to give thought to creating compositions in which they would return to the early 20th century, when noises as means of musical expression emerged for the very first time. The typical instruments used by the Opening Performance Orchestra are laptops, by means of which they conceive their fraction music, which can be briefly characterized by the slogan "no melody no rhythm no harmony". Constructing three intonarumori, writing their own pieces for these instruments and performing works by other contemporary composers -- Blixa Bargeld, Luciano Chessa, and Fred Möpert -- represented for the Opening Performance Orchestra getting into close contact with the beginnings of the musical avant-garde, as well as returning to the historical roots of the music that had served as the basis of noise in art.

UCC HARLO United LP
In United, her debut LP as UCC Harlo, classically-trained musician Annie Gårlid distills hauntological pop, sound art, medieval, and baroque music, and left-field club production into a series of ecclesiastical-wave ventures. Written over six years in Germany, United began on train commutes during Gårlid's stint as a violist in an opera orchestra near Cologne and developed further during her time in Berlin. Through gestures such as reframing music by Bach and Magister Zacharias, through DAW experimentation and field recordings, United proposes sonic reconciliations between the old and the new. United also reflects the idea that sound and music always exist in broader, complex contexts loaded with historical and environmental information and mediated by internal emotional landscapes. For Gårlid, this acknowledgement is a metaphor for our urgent need to be attentive to non-human agencies and voices. United acts as a means of claiming a right to obscurity and of "sounding" ambivalence, doubt, and messiness in an age that demands transparency and clarity. Annie Gårlid is a New York-based writer, musician, and musicology researcher concerned with our ever-shifting, tenuous relationships with ecology, technology and care. Creating and discovering links between the old and the new, Gårlid operates equally in the realms of experimental, club and early music. She is a member of the Holly Herndon Ensemble and the band Songs, has collaborated with Caterina Barbieri, Bill Kouligas, and Emptyset, and has performed with ASMR-artist Claire Tolan. She works regularly with an array of composers and artists, and performs as a viola player and singer in both Europe and the USA.

PRITCHARD, BILL Midland Lullabies CD
Some time ago... "The J.D. Salinger of pop" was how Rolling Stone France described Bill Pritchard after the release of Mother Town Hall in 2016 (TR 320CD/LP), while the editor of Rolling Stone Germany made Mother Town Hall his "Album of The Week" -- just a few of the many accolades heaped on Pritchard's last record. Then there was the reissue of the now legendary album Parce Que, originally released in 1988, which Pritchard recorded with the much-missed Daniel Darc. It too was feted by -- among others -- Le Monde, Le Nouvel Obs, Télérama, Les Inrockuptibles, and Libération. And now... Midland Lullabies. This is the album Pritchard always wanted to make. Why?: Because he always wanted to make a mark as a "shabby suited crooner". Midland Lullabies is songs from the Midlands about continental issues bathed in a crooning, piano drenched style that Pritchard has been perfecting over two years. Complete with sumptuous, at times almost Brechtian strings. You'll visit "Iolanda", a tragic Parisian heroine who you could meet in the newsagents in Wednesbury or in a cemetery in Montmartre. "Hey Iolanda, eat your curly fries and celebrate!" On "Forever" you may ask yourself: "Are you in Shibuya, Hamburg or Birmingham or just inside Pritchard's head?" "The Last Temptation of Brussels"! Well, there is a plaque about the fight between two symbolist scribblers in Brussels. Is Pritchard recounting French poetic history or his own? Or is it all just '60s swagger? Whether Pritchard is riding "a scooter bathed in pink" or watching life changed by thoughtless intent, even if he listens as "Lucifer sings on an out of tune piano", he always keeps his dream of writing the perfect pop song alive. On "Thanks" Bill tells you about "photo shutters in black and white, an image of the door to the moon". Has he been staying in the Beat Hotel? Or rather The Waggon and Horses? Whatever! What a beautiful, plaintive, almost mystical song "Thanks" is. Produced again beautifully by Tim Bradshaw, Pritchard says that from the very outset he insisted on a stripped-down sound, utilizing Tim's brilliant, subtle and sympathetic piano interpretations of his songs. They know each other so well! All in all a case of less is more!

WICK, JACOB Feel LP
A trumpeter and improviser living in Mexico City, over the last ten years Jacob Wick has become known for deconstructing the instrument itself and any expectations of how it "should" be played. The explorations on Feel focus on sound as it relates to specific spaces and in turn the subtle but profound connections they have to emotions and the body. The result is a highly personal music that is both unique and immediate, abstract yet undeniably visceral. On Feel, Wick creates two intense side-long improvisations. On the surface they appear to be works of rigorous minimalism; on closer listen they reveal sounds that slowly but constantly shift and evolve. Texture and plosives replace melody and rhythm. Body and breath become indistinguishable from the instrument, the moment is stretched and expanded. Each sound is so closely linked that the player and listener are drawn completely into the present. Feel is an uncompromising and entirely original album -- an intimate sound experience that rewards anyone that chooses to enter.

YOUNG GODS, THE Data Mirage Tangram CD
Under Franz Treichler's wings, huge, breathtaking panoramas unfurl like beautiful dreamscapes on the edge of sleep, a weightless dream that is both comforting and blackened with darkness. A return to known land, whose topography has been modified by time and age is what comprises the matrix of Data Mirage Tangram, the new Young Gods album. Eight years without a studio album; it was about time they followed up on Everybody Knows (2010) and addressed the period of "artistic confusion" -- in Treichler's own words -- that followed Al Comet's departure and replacement with original god Cesare Pizzi. The subsequent tour brought a breath of fresh air to the trio, revitalized by this return to their roots. Rock and electro avant-gardists are not known for their backward-looking attitude. Still, thirty years of uninterrupted activity, could only strengthen the gods' will to write a new chapter. Data Mirage Tangram was born in a basement amidst people. Treichler (lyrics, guitar, electronics), Pizzi (sampling, electronics), and Bernard Trontin (drums, percussion) accepted Cully Jazz's invitation to set up on the stage of the THBBC wine cellar for an open laboratory for the duration of the festival. "The audience came and went. We didn't feel obliged to present a finished product. It was really stimulating." At the end of the residence, the seven tracks of the album existed but their curves still needed to be shaped. The band incorporated the songs into their live repertoire, fine-tuning them for three years into their final structure, captured in Franz Treichler's studios and mixed on the console of English record producer Alan Moulder (Nine Inch Nails). The result is to be savored as a major album by The Young Gods and an addition to their multiple experiences as well as their shared DNA. Each track exists for itself while creating a coherent ensemble, a united journey in seven unique steps. In this digital world, which the gods explore like visionaries, the music breathes and breaks free, undulating on the string of a guitar that once again takes centre stage. How would one sum up the Young Gods' history? "A long road," says Treichler. A road that unfurls and stretches out to the horizon and its mirages.

VITAL IDLES EP 7"
Brand new 7" EP from Glasgow's Vital Idles, following on from the band's well-received debut album, Left Hand (UTR 106CD/LP, 2018). The EP reveals itself as a steady, hypo-tenusal rise of intensity and momentum, starting with the hallucinogenic restrain of opener "Break A", building tension throughout the gothic-noise flourishes of "Seconds" and "Rustle Rustle" and culminating in "Careful Extracts", a two-minute burst of carefree introspection that might as well be the unintentional answer to early career highlight "My Sentiments".

VA Cumbia Beat Volume 1 2LP
2019 repress. Subtitled: Experimental Guitar-Driven Tropical Sounds from Peru 1966-1976. In mid-50s Peru, mambo was progressively replaced by preferences for other rhythms like merengue, guaguancó, cha cha cha, joropo, guaracha, rumba and cumbia, which timidly begins to sound during these years. In Lima it's the golden age of great orchestras and music ensembles which are capable of playing swing and jazz, but especially the diverse tropical variants inundating the market. The most successful of all, La Sonora De Lucho Macedo, released in 1965 an LP consisting exclusively of cumbia. Around this time, the successful folklore group Los Pacharacos released the album Los Ídolos Del Pueblo, which included a cumbia number in the middle of the potpourri of huaynos, waltzes, and polkas. The groups preserved the fusion of fox trot and mambo rhythms along with huayno and cumbia in the execution of their music. That feeling would be the basis for the success of such unorthodox and unclassifiable songs as "La Chichera" or "Peti Pan". The recording in 1965 of these two songs by Los Demonios Del Mantaro on a seminal 45 with the Sono Radio label was the jumping off point for the birth of cumbia andina, also called "chichi" precisely for this song, which is dedicated to a vendor of the well-known Incan liquor. The electric shock of rock guitars enters the world of cumbia in 1968. The cause of such copulation was Enrique Delgado Montes, regarded as the genre's godfather. He did it, as part of his band Los Destellos, on a 45 and an eponymous 1968 LP (CAL 001LP/CALC 001LP). His songs constitute the most surprising musical fusions and amalgams of the time, whether they merge Cuban music and psychedelia, explore the sounds of Andean or Amazonian music, combine the digitalization of the Creole guitar with huayno melodies or abuse fuzz tones and distortion pedals. There wasn't an innovation that tropical guitarists didn't add to their sound: delay, fuzz tone, overdrive, wah-wah, reverb, modulating effects typical of rock bands are assimilated into a stunning sonic cocktail. In this context, cumbia reached the top of the charts in popularity. It replaced rock as the urban sound. Includes extensive liner notes in English and Spanish, photos, and memorabilia. Also features Silvestre Montez Y Sus Guantanameros, Los Orientales De Paramonga, Grupo Celeste, Los Mirlos, Manzanita Y Su Conjunto, Los Wembler's De Iquitos, Los Beltons, Los Beta 5, Los Galax, Aniceto Y Sus Fabulosos, Juaneco Y Su Combo, Los Sanders De Ñaña, Los Diablos Rojos, Los Ecos, and Los Demonios De Corocochay.

VA Cumbia Beat Volume 2: Tropical Sounds from Peru 1966-1983 2LP
2019 repress. "The 'resurrection' of Peruvian tropical music, of psychedelic cumbia or, as others like to call it, 'chicha,' is perhaps one of the most surprising musical phenomena in recent years . . . Elements of rock, folklore, música criolla, Andean music, Amazonian music, Colombian cumbia, salsa and even psychedelia intermingle in this 'cannibal' genre capable of devouring and assimilating every possible influence. Both Enrique Delgado and Manzanita, the two great founding guitarists of the genre, made music that absorbed all possible manner of styles. Vampisoul features not only tunes from Delgado with his group Los Destellos and from Manzanita, but also from their side projects: Delgado's Los Casmeños and Manzanita's El Monje Loco. Los Girasoles, Los Yungas, Los Beta 5 and Los Ecos continued those sonic explorations . . . Although this compilation consists mostly of instrumentals, a classic of Peruvian tropical music, 'Colegiala' by Los Ilusionistas, is included with vocals from Carlos Ramírez 'Centeno'. Los Beta 5 would never turn to the sung format . . . Another group that has in their origins instrumental beat spirit and sound are Los Ecos. The sparkling-clean guitar sound of their leader Beto Cuestas always shines in songs filled with a delicate pop sensibility and melodies that oscillate between melancholy and danceable experimentation. Los Yungas had recorded songs in which música criolla and huayno are 'cumbianized,' but the more significant point of departure happened when Los Demonios Del Mantaro released a historic single . . . [Carlos] Baquerizo was also the first to introduce an electric guitar in Peruvian cumbia in Los 5 Palomillas, a side project of Los Demonios. The influence of the 'provincial sound' would be felt by many other guitarists . . . One of the most original and surprising guitar sounds in Peruvian tropical music would be that of Maximiliano Chávez from Los Orientales De Paramonga, who created a very peculiar style of tropical music with deep basses, galloping percussion, and wah-wah guitar . . .Los Mirlos, with their guitars and hypnotic grooves, achieved the most popular and transnational of the Amazonian sounds. The other Amazonian miracle was Juaneco Y Su Combo, led by Juan Wong. Their music, full of references to Amazonian mythology and to ayahuasca (a psychoactive drink), featured the guitar of Noé Fachín." --Alfredo VillarAlso features Los Orientales, Compay Quinto, Los Pecos, Los Titanes, Los Yungas, Grupo Celeste, Los Santos, Aniceto Y Sus Fabulosos, and José Y Sus Antillanos.

VA Cumbia Beat Volume 3: 21 Peruvian Tropical Gems 2LP
Double LP version. "Fifty years after the release of one of the founding records of the genre known as Peruvian cumbia (by guitar players Enrique Delgado Montes and Berardo Hernández 'Manzanita'), Vampisoul presents this third volume in the series Cumbia Beat, which brings together 45 rpm rarities from acclaimed groups, short-lived bands and outstanding huaycumbias. Like the previous volumes in this series, listening to this record takes you on a journey across the geography of Peru, as the majority of the groups on this collection were from different regions of the country, or had close links to them, although all of the artists recorded in Lima. Most of the bands emerged during the period 1968-1980, a time of deep political and social change implemented by the nationalist military dictatorship. Los Demonios Del Mantaro, Los Demonios De Corocochay, and Los 5 Palomillas are the exceptions to this, as they recorded between 1965 and 1967 and produced a hybrid of cumbia and huayno called huaycumbia, a genre which achieved high sales figures during those years. Despite the characteristics of huaycumbia, the early composers of Peruvian cumbia didn't consider it a direct source of inspiration. They admit to being more influenced by Colombian cumbia, Cuban guaracha, beat, and psychedelic music from the UK and US that they had played since the end of the '60s, in their 'own style', as a part of a musical appropriation process that quickly led them to forge a singular sound. Peruvian cumbia developed, spurred by the music school erudition of the guitarist Enrique Delgado Montes on the one hand and, on the other, by the self-taught creativity of Berardo Hernández 'Manzanita'. Largely ignored by the elites, it steadily won over audiences and created its own market, establishing its own broadcast channels and distribution channels. As Enrique Delgado stated in 1973: 'We've defined a typically Peruvian cumbia which, strange as it might appear, people also like in Colombia and several other countries.' Finally, setting up their own labels, competing hard against one another and enriching their music with sounds they brought from their specific regions, these bands that gradually sprung up all over the country managed to consolidate a tradition that is still alive today." --Hugo Lévano GAlso features Silvestre Montez Y Sus Guantanameros, Los Cóndores Del Cusco, Los Gitanos, Los Orientales De Paramonga, Los Casmeños, Los Beta 5, Los Girasoles, Paco Zambrano Y Sus Ratones, Los Ecos, Los Tantos, Los Scorpios, Los Blue Kings De Ñaña, Grupo Siglo XX, Los Sander's De Ñaña, Los Quantos, Los Diablos Rojos, Marco Merry Y Sus Golfos, and Sonido Verde De Moyobamba.

SEXTETO MIRAMAR Salsa! Mi Hermana LP
"By the time Sexteto Miramar's groundbreaking ¡Salsa! Mi Hermana LP was released in 1968 they had been performing for over a decade and had gone through changes in both personnel and instrumentation. Formed in Medellín as a children's 'murguita' (little holiday party band) that used to annoy the neighbors, they quickly grew into a hot teen combo specializing in Cuban and Colombian music with accordion and sax arrangements in a conjunto (small group) format, eventually recording for local labels including Zeida. During this time the group had several hits that became standards including 'Carruseles' and 'Cumbia Del Sol'. By the mid-1960s the old band had dissolved and original founding member and bandleader/arranger Hernán Builes had formed a new outfit, signing with Zeida rival Discos Fuentes. Miramar then recorded an obscure album of tropical music called Cumbias Con El Miramar, sounding much like their earlier records. However, inspired by New York's Joe Cuba Sextet and La Playa Sextet, several years later Builes decided to swap the folkloric accordion for the more contemporary sounding electric guitar, piano and vibes and signed a new contract with Fuentes under the name Sexteto Miramar. During this period Miramar featured several vocalists who would later go on to greater fame, including Humberto Muriel, Johnny Moré and Rodolfo Aicardi. The newly minted Sexteto Miramar were perhaps the first Colombian group to use the term 'salsa' as a musical genre when they recorded ¡Salsa! Mi Hermana. The record was also their first album as a sextet under their new name, instrumentation and membership... The album features several originals as well as cover versions of New York Latin and Cuban tunes first popularized by Orquesta América Del '55, Tito Rodríguez, Celia Cruz, Sabú Martínez, La Playa Sextet, Joe Cuba Sextet, and the Peruvian group Pepe Moreno Y Su All-Star Band. As to how Builes came up with the album's signature tune, 'Salsa Boogaloo', he had most likely been listening to Venezuelan radio broadcasts of the new Latin records by artists such as Pete Rodriguez, Ricardo Ray, and Johnny Colón coming out of New York, which had been described as 'salsa' since 1966 by bohemian disc-jockey Phidias Danilo Escalona . . . According to Muriel, the fact that ¡Salsa! Mi Hermana did not have any overtly Colombian genres like cumbia and instead concentrated on foreign sounds such as guajira, mambo, charanga, bolero, guaguancó, guaracha, boogaloo, and salsa meant that the band was consciously trying to update Colombian tastes." --Pablo Yglesias, aka DJ Bongohead Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180 gram vinyl.

HAYS & CHIARA IZZI, KEVIN Across The Sea CD
Jando Music/Via Veneto Jazz release Across The Sea, by Kevin Hays and Chiara Izzi. This album is the outcome of an encounter of two musicians so distant and yet so inexorably close. A project where the music is always tangible, not volatile, particularly when born under a bright inspirational sky. Those holding the reins of this visionary journey between jazz and pop, America and Italy, dream and lyricism are, without doubt, the two artists: Chiara, with her warm, Mediterranean voice and Kevin, one of the most celebrated and admired pianists and composers on the American jazz scene who can boast distinguished pop music collaborations (James Taylor). Across The Sea was recorded at the legendary Sear Sound in New York; the outcome of diligent project work, with the collaboration of several guests such as Omer Avital, Gregoire Maret, Nir Felder, Chris Potter, and Rogério Boccato that simply amplify the awareness that this shared journey, so rich and adventurous, began under the best auspices. The compelling predominance of melody, the osmosis between vocals and keyboards and the amazing confluence of their singing voices, have sublimated the tasks related to production into subtle finishing touches of a chisel, aromas, invitations and "further" sounds magically converging into the final work. The French horn in the emblematic "Two For The Road", the ancestral oud in the Miles Davis classic "Nardis", the punctual and decisive harmonica in Pat Metheny's "James", the caressing guitar in "Circles Of The Mind", the sinuous saxophone in "Viaggio Elegiaco", are just a few examples.

ROSCOE MITCHELL ORCHESTRA Littlefield Concert Hall Mills College CD
"Each of the four pieces on the album is a product of the Roscoe's tireless efforts to devise systems to articulate and capitalize on the tensions between composition and improvisation in both his own work and music as a practice at-large. Three of the four works ('Rub', 'Wha-Wha', and 'Frenzy House') are part of the 'Conversations for Orchestra' series, the history of which is described in detail in the liner notes for Mitchell's 2017 album Discussions (Wide Hive Records WH-0339). In brief, the 'Conversations' series consists of compositions which trace their genesis back to a suite of improvisations recorded by Mitchell, pianist Craig Taborn, and drummer Kikanju Baku in 2014 (which can be heard on the Wide Hive releases Conversations I and Conversations II). Mitchell has employed some of the most talented minds from all over the globe to produce precise, note-for-note transcriptions of the complex material improvised by the trio. The process suggests a vision of music making which eschews both the rigid fixity of composition and the flighty transience of improvisation, recasting both practices in a way that emphasizes meticulous idea-craft, instantaneous communication, and unbounded imagination. The album's first track is 'Rub' from the 'Conversations' series. In this iteration, the orchestra eases us into an opening improvisation by Soo Yeon Lyuh, whose utterly, exquisitely sensitive haegeum playing nearly crystallizes the air around her as she's soon joined by baritone Thomas Buckner and flautist Gianni Trovalusci. Andy Strain's opening cadenza on the second track, 'Wha-Wha', serves as a testament to the trombonist's soaring talent as a melodist and full-bodied mastery of tone. 'No Nah Nah Nai', is an original work conducted by Mitchell himself Ellis's harp. Such is the stunning genius of the series, each element of which is a fruitful, boundless text ever always being by becoming.-from the liner notes of Joshua Marshall."

NORMAL BRAIN Lady Maid CD
WRWTFWW Records present the reissue of impossible-to-find cult album Lady Maid by Japanese outfit Normal Brain. Originally released in 1981 as a limited vinyl pressing of 300 copies on Agi Yuzuru's fabled experimental label Vanity Records (R.N.A. Organism, Dada, Sympathy Nervous, Tolerance), Lady Maid is a testament to the creativity of the early '80s Japanese electronic and experimental scene, encapsulating a prolific era when audio gear became affordable for musicians to explore sounds in the comfort of their home, free from studio time pressure and major label rules. Entirely imagined and brought to life by an inspired Yukio Fujimoto, the six-track opus was conceived with a Korg MS-20, Korg SQ-10, Boss Dr. Rhythm DR-55, and a Texas Instruments Speak & Spell. It's elegantly minimalist, honest and witty, very playful, cleverly pop, and downright fascinating. The A side captures the fun side of avant-garde electronica, lo-fi wave, proto-glitch, and IDM, a joyful ride beautifully interrupted by the cinematic mood switch of the B side -- a 20-minute ambient piece flirting with sci-fi, melancholy, and hints of metallic darkness. Unclassifiable and marvelous! Includes liner notes by acclaimed sound artist and mastermind behind the project, Yukio Fujimoto. CD version comes as digipack and marks the first ever release on the format.
