BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Bravery, Repetition And Noise LP
2017 repress, black vinyl. LP version. Originally released in 2001. Bravery, Repetition and Noise is a dark, dreamy album, rich in atmosphere, layered in waves of sound. The album's antecedents are clear, inspired by psychedelia as they were by punk's nihilism, pulling both strands into a doom-laden, experimental sound quite distinct from anything that had come before or since. Brian Jonestown Massacre uses this as their touchstone, lovingly re-creating the moods and atmospheres of the past.

PORTABLE SUNSETS Order 2LP
Portable Sunsets is one of the monikers of Peter Segerstrom, a producer based in Brooklyn, US. He previously released his full-length album Bless on Atomnation (2015), an LP as Surfing on 1080p (2015), and another Portable Sunsets album on the Magical Properties label (2012). Order is the follow-up to these records and it is a dreamy, somewhat lo-fi experimental techno LP. Combined with an ancient ambient undertone, Order does not lose its club ready vibe -- This record floats somewhere between laid-back warehouse techno and electronica. Very much representing a unique style, Peter often uses his own voice in his productions, programmed through self-created synths in Max/MSP. Vocals have become textures and are used as a synth, pad, or soundscape. The combination of genres makes Order a perfect record to dream away to at home, as well as to dance to in clubs. Comes in a gatefold sleeve.

TEE MANGO EP#1 12"
Aus Music present a disco-tinged 12" courtesy of Millionhands head honcho Tee Mango. Having so far almost exclusively released on Millionhands alone, Tee Mango makes a rare appearance outside of his home turf and in doing so follows on from his acclaimed Imperfections Vol.1 LP (2016). His EP#1 for Aus Music carries forth the sense of raw, sample heavy soul that was the real spark of Imperfections Vol.1, while maintaining a feel for the needs of the dancefloor. Loose, natural drums, deftly chopped samples and hazy synth lines keep it moody.

ABSTRAXION & KASPER BJORKE Matin + Nuit EP 12"
Abstraxion and Kasper Bjørke return for their second collaboration on DC Salas and Abstraxion's Biologic Records imprint. "Matin" is a ten-minute journey through a glistening landscape. Celestial arpeggios and subtle dissonances are grounded by a hypnotic bassline and restrained percussion. "Nuit" progresses into darker territory. There are familiar elements of disco, but they've been mangled to create something far more twisted. Drums take the lead, punctuated by assertive bass stabs and ominous chords that howl through cavernous acoustics. "Ivre" ("drunk") takes an emotive turn. Disorienting acid bass winds its way through mournful harmonies and overcast melodies.

CLUSTER Konzerte 1972/1977 LP+CD
LP version with CD. The two authorized recordings presented on Konzerte 1972/1977 vividly conjure up the atmosphere, perhaps even the magic, of a Cluster performance back in the day. One took place in 1977 during a science fiction festival in Metz (France). The other dates back to an earlier show in Hamburg's Fabrik venue. Cluster played three gigs in the city in 1971/1972, including the one partially included on 1972's Cluster II (LR 335LP). Cluster shows routinely lasted six hours or more, luring both the band and the audience into a state of intoxication, no doubt acutely enhanced by the intake of certain substances. The buzzwords of the moment were: psychedelic, magical, ritualistic, corresponding more or less to the Dionysian hedonism which pervades certain styles of contemporary music culture today. It is worth noting this context as useful background when listening to the live recordings presented here. In the beginning, Cluster's music was rough, brutal, and spontaneous, created with the most rudimentary tools. Unlike many of their colleagues in this pioneering age, Cluster did not use any synthesizers, sequencers, or high-end amps. But this proved to be their strength, rather than a disadvantage. Roedelius and Moebius played in the truest sense of the word, untroubled by mechanical processes. They used their machines but were not dependent on them. Intuition was the dominant force, the risk of potential failure was readily understood to be as much a part of their vibrant art as success. Perfection had become a concept associated with convention. Indeed, anyone who was lucky enough to witness Cluster play in the 1970s will testify that things sometimes went badly wrong. But mostly they did not, and then the real magic was tangible. A utopian, previously undiscovered world of sound was created in the presence of the beholder. The sound quality of these two documents is average. A successful performance was considered more important than a perfect recording thereof. As listeners, this should be accepted today. Konzerte 1972/1977 provides a short journey into the nascent heart of Cluster's creative universe, just after the big bang.

SIMBIOSI Indastria EP 12"
Rimini, Italy's Simbiosi rip out their first 12" proper on Cosmo Rhythmatic since their debut full-length shock-out Elements for Actress's Werk Discs imprint in 2015. Indastria EP slugs like a rusty Italian motor with a wonky cam shaft in a fiercely condensed session of hardcore techno thistle and knackered throbs. It's grim and remorselessly underground material, banking the escalating NPLGNN-style filtered noise of "HRD90", cycling through the bombed-out doom core trample of "Indastria" to the depressive collapse of "Eve" with its carmine horror pads, then spluttering out the tarry churn of "Dixentra" and chaotic inverted bass drum pressure of "TEIWSJH".

HARRY WOLFMAN Downstream EP 12"
Harry Wolfman delves into the leftfield side of house with a dreamy five-tracker. "Fermi" brings the tropically-tinged deep house heat, wavering pads and buoyant bass paint a mirage of summer days. "Ice Thin" starts as a melancholic mover, steadily building through dusty samples, shaken percussion, and smoky moods. "Downstream" is a dark and grainy outing with edgy arps, tough drums, and frenzied synths. Toronto's Jesse Futerman provides a superb rework of "Ice Thin" with distant horns, warbling Rhodes, and rumbling bass. Rich strings and woodwinds on "Outro Version" fill out a lush landscape, which swells over the bottom heavy groove.

The Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra is Far Out Recording's in-house Brazilian disco super group. The project's arrangers are the late, great Azymuth maestro Jose Roberto Bertrami and the legendary Arthur Verocai. Now on its 14th release, the remix series is a sizeable and ever-growing arsenal of disco weaponry, with a prolific list of contributors. The latest offering comes from Glaswegian disco maverick Al Kent. Kent twists around the bouncing congas and Arthur Verocai's chilling string arrangements for a striking up-tempo stomper with a fierce edge. DOKTA VENOM Mood Swings EP 12"
Far Out Recording's in-house producer Daniel Maunick has worked on Azymuth's Fênix (FARO 194CD/LP, 2016) and Marcos Valle's Estatica (FARO 153CD, 2010). Moodswings EP comes from his Dokta Venom alias. "See The Sun" evokes an elevated, cloudy ether, with each kick drum another step up to the sky. "Mood Swings" deploys components of broken beat, garage, house, IDM, and boogie, but shrouds them into a hazy deepness. "I Owe U Something" ups the tempo with propulsive percussion that blurs the acoustic with the electric, glowing synths and anguished vocals formulate a belter that's somewhere between early Pepe Bradock and Azymuth.

WILSON, GARY You Think You Really Know Me LP
Repressed. Gary Wilson's monumental 1977 LP reissued with a glamorously shiny foil cover bearing the original cover art (care of Owen Maercks's well-loved copy), delicately laid out by Scott Allison. Which makes it, perhaps, the last copy you'll ever need. You Think You Really Know Me (also the title of Michael Wolk's 2005 documentary about Wilson) was Wilson's second LP, but the first he recorded as a vocalist, hewing to his own bizarre vision -- a syncretic collision of romance, new wave cocktail jazz, heartbreak, disco porn-soundtrack music, and experimental tape manipulation. Home-recorded in Endicott, NY, the album found a few fans when released, but subsequently became the exclusive purview of record collectors and the women who tolerate them. Beck namechecked Wilson in 1996, which made a few new people scratch their heads. And the album was reissued in 2002. Rediscovery followed, and records, the documentary, and some odd live shows. Most of Wilson's moves are stamped with his unique aesthetic, and are also documented on other three recommended Feeding Tube LPs -- Lisa Wants to Talk to You (FTR 081LP), Forgotten Lovers (FTR 065LP), and Music for Piano (FTR 192LP). But as bodacious as these three albums are, the real root of Wilson's muse is most obvious on You Think You Really Know Me. It is the sound of a 23-year old oddball from upstate New York wrestling with his demons and actually winning. There's nothing quite like it. And it offers a story of hope to every weirdo who hears it. Hallelujah! Edition of 500.

BUMBLEBEE UNLIMITED Lady Bug 12"
"Originally released in 1978 on Greg Charmichael's Red Greg Records, 'Lady Bug' and 'Love Bug' are probably Bumblebee Unlimited's most recognizable hits. Much like Cloud One, Universal Robot Band and Inner Life, Bumblebee Unlimited was a studio-based disco unit conducted by Patrick Adams and Gregory Carmichael. Their only album Sting Like a Bee was released by RCA in 1979 with contributions from longtime Adams & Carmichael collaborators Leroy Burgess (vocals), Norbert Sloley (bass), and Richard Taninbaum (drums). With an undeniable groove, signature keys and arrangements by Patrick Adams in addition to the comically sped-up vocals, 'Lady Bug' is considered by many to be one of the most important underground tracks of the Disco era. As with the original 'Lady Bug' 12" single, the John Morales and Frank Trimarco 'Sunshine Sound' mix takes the A-side of the RCA release. A true Disco version in every sense of the word, this almost 10 minute mix brings out the Latin percussions to the front making it a true dance floor classic and establishing John Morales as one of the best remixers in the industry. The B-Side belongs to one of New York City's hottest DJs at the time: Larry Levan. Despite being a very early remix by the Legendary Paradise Garage DJ, the talent was evident and his understanding of a club mix in wide display. It's no wonder Larry Levan would go to become one of the most respected and revered remixers of his generation. Similarly to the Morales/Trimarco version, the percussions are accented throughout the mix making it ready for the discotheque. However the two mixes are undoubtedly different with Levan's bringing out more funk out of the Adams composition focusing more on the keys and the infectious bass lines. No real point in arguing which is better, so let's just be glad we have both."

SPECIAL ED Youngest In Charge LP
2017 repress. "Special Ed's debut LP presented in a gatefold jacket with liner notes by Brian Coleman that include interviews with Ed and Howie Tee. In 1989, Hip-Hop was truly bona fide. It had shed the 'just a gimmick' tag years before, as it showed not only artistic growth, but serious sales numbers. In short, it was here to stay. After the explosion of Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy in New York and the rise of the West Coast seen in multiplatinum successes by N.W.A. and Ice-T, the music started to truly expand, letting new voices and approaches join the party and make their own waves. One of those was a young man from Brooklyn who went by the name Special Ed. Only 16 when his debut hit shelves (and then quickly flew off them), his age was indeed just a number. Beyond any gimmicks, Ed had serious skills. Even considering the novelty of Ed's youth, the Youngest In Charge album stands very firmly on its own as a hip-hop classic, the ultimate in late '80s New York brag swagger, with hit singles 'I Got It Made' and 'Think About It,' both which showed off Ed's battle stances and Howie Tee's masterful, never-endingly catchy productions. Add to it deeper album cuts that still resonate like 'Taxing,' 'Fly M.C.' and 'I'm The Magnificent' (a later single, in 1990), and it brings you back to a time when hip-hop was all about skills and chemistry. Special Ed and Howie Tee certainly had both, with dopeness to spare."

HEROIN IN TAHITI Remoria LP
Heroin In Tahiti is a death surf duo from Rome, Italy, composed of Valerio Mattioli and Francesco de Figuereido. In Roman mythology, the murder of Remus by his brother Romulus is the key event that led to the founding of the city of Rome. But what if Remus overcame Romulus? Easy: rather than Rome, we'd have Remoria, the city that never happened. We'll never know what Remoria would have looked like, at least compared to the Rome which still stands there 27 centuries after the ominous brother's sacrifice. But perhaps, the ghosts of Remoria still harbor under the so called Eternal City, as a kind of deforming mirror of the events, the shapes, the geometries, and the values which lay on the surface. In their new "alternate history LP", Heroin In Tahiti explore the negative occult side of their native city, portraying the myths, the legends, the heroes, and the tragedies of that original "what if", and sink into the abyss of Rome's psyche and griefs.

Luca Massolin is an active figure in the young generation of outsider musicians. Born in Italy, he is now living in Portugal. His sound is focused on string instruments (guitar, bass, mandolin), voice, and analog electronics. He is constantly encouraged by his fascination for the work of early electronic music pioneers, early '70s guitar rock, as well as cosmic improvisation, minimalism, and free jazz. In his solo recordings and live performances, as well as his involvement in Golden Jooklo Age and Neokarma Jooklo Experience, he developed a personal sound focusing on the power of music to create images and visions. His efforts as a band member and solo artist have been documented by labels such as Qbico, Digitalis, Backwards, Troglosound, Peasant Magik, Utmarken, Holidays, and his own 8mm imprint. SONIC DAWN, THE Into The Long Night (Orange Vinyl) LP
LP version. Limited edition orange vinyl. Into The Long Night is the second album by The Sonic Dawn, one of the most remarkable bands to come out of the new psychedelic wave in Denmark. Just a few seconds into this album, you will realize that you are in for a mind altering experience. "It's a trip! By taking the listeners to places they didn't expect to go, we hope to make them aware -- that they'll stop up and think about life for a minute. Awareness is the first step to change in the world," says guitarist and vocalist Emil Bureau. To achieve the dramatic changes of mood and feeling that The Sonic Dawn excel at, they mix a wide range of styles, from jazzy sitar pop to heavy acid rock. A pleasant-sounding, analog production makes the album easy to approach, not to water it down, but rather to pull the unsuspecting listener into the deep. The songs were written by day and recorded at night, during a month of complete isolation in a remote house by The North Sea. The track list can be interpreted as a trip through the night, into a new dawn. Close your eyes and see it: Go through the hill country with its long yellow grass, to the beach where the setting sun dances on the cold waves. Slide into the darkest hours, alone with your thoughts and doubts. Suddenly come the first blue rays, separating past from present, before a golden dawn is born and everything takes its right shape, perhaps for the very first time. Into The Long Night was made in collaboration with some of Scandinavia's most regarded personnel. It features Swedish Hammond legend Erik "Errka" Petersson on keys and Morten Grønvad on vibraphone and percussion, which adds to its soundtrack-like qualities. Mixed in The Village Recording with jazz producer Thomas Vang (Oscar Peterson, Randy Brecker, etc.). Mastered in Svenska Grammofonstudion with Hans Olsson Brookes (Graveyard, Blues Pills, José González, etc.). Fans of psychedelic rock, neo-psych, freak beat, and classic rock will surely enjoy this record.

DEDEKIND CUT American Zen (Special Edition) 2LP
Following a strictly limited tape edition of American Zen, Lee Bannon, aka Dedekind Cut, links with Hospital Productions for an expanded new vinyl edition, clasping a sublime bonus single collaboration with Alex Zhang Hungtai, who's better known for his maudlin pop moniker, Dirty Beaches. If you like your ambient music intangible and synaesthetically olfactory, huffable, you're encouraged to check this one without delay... American Zen finds its center in quivering, pensive drones and fractured small sounds, but is rent with an oceanic sense of scale, deploying splashes of distant percussion, extreme panned vocal snippets, and slowly escalating harmonic space perfused by crackling radio-waves and that intangible timbre of an old TV turned on somewhere, but you can't quite pick out its location. It unfolds at a glacial pace in five parts, crossing lines/waves comparable to Chino Amobi & Rabit's ultraviolent mixtape (2015), the nostalgic Americana yearn of Torn Hawk, and even The Caretaker's hallowed ether zones; perpetually out of reach, submerged or hardly there, but feeling as though he's close, breathing quietly in the background and watching you listen. In addition to the original five tracks, including the formerly tape-only "Folsom Lake 04", you'll now also find a rare outing from Alex Zhang Hungtai infiltrating the finely graded and diaphanous silhouette of "I'll Give You The World" on the final side, serving to complement and temper Dedekind Cut's broader strokes with fluctuating microtonal infidelities and a gauzier, anaesthetizing and almost pastoral atmosphere that's a real pleasure to drift off with. Excellent stuff, perhaps the most interesting of Bannon's releases so far. Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

"Brand New Love", featuring the vocals of Zilla, finds Matthew Herbert creating a dense and dramatic bass heavy cut. A steppers beat, utilizing Herbert's trademark sampling techniques, it's a killer cut with sweeping cinematic qualities. Special Request, the jungle heavy arm of Paul Woolford, turns in an absolutely lethal version; choppy breaks, spinbacks and booming subs. "The Peacock", with its loose beats and opaque stabs, rolls along with its industrial undertones and rave-y motif, discordant at times but truly hypnotizing. "Cheekbone" is frenetic and charging micro tribal rave; a glorious medley of percussion, earworm synths, and guillotined vocal samples.

COLEY, BYRON Defense Against Squares Book
Poems of resistance against death and the dead squares. After years of collecting and reading the stuff, Byron Coley started writing poetry in 1998 as a reaction to the death vortex seemingly surrounding everything in his life at the time. From that moment on, he wrote lots of poems, mainly published in chapbooks, broadsides, and underground magazines: all almost impossible to find. Defense Against Squares is the first major collection of Byron Coley's poetry to be published. It features odes to personal heroes such as Jack Rose, Lou Reed, and Captain Beefheart, poems against the rotten world of George Bush and words of resistance against all squares. With an introduction by Kim Gordon, cover drawing of the author by Charles Burns, and French translation supervised by John-Glassco prize winner Marie Frankland. Softcover; 166 pages; Bilingual; 4.75 x 8.5 inches.Byron Coley was born in Manhattan in 1956 and currently lives on an old farm in Western Massachusetts with his wife, the inventor Lili Dwight. He has written extensively about underground culture since the mid-70s. Known most prominently for his work for Forced Exposure in the 1980s, he has been resident editor at NY Rocker, managing editor Take It!, underground editor Spin, ghost editor Ecstatic Peace Poetry Journal, etc. He has been a columnist for the L.A. Weekly, Arthur, Spin, le Bathyscaphe, Harp, and so on. He co-wrote No-Wave with Thurston Moore (2008). He has written liner notes for hundreds of records, spewed for more zines than anyone could ever remember, and contributed to various anthologies. He currently writes for The Wire, codirects the label Feeding Tube Records, and publishes Bull Tongue Review, a quarterly journal of post-rock cultural pluralism. Historical straight jobs include dishwasher, snowmaker, Teamster, carpenter, line cook, janitor, doorman, panhandler, and drug tester. Byron Coley's previous book for L'Oie de Cravan was the collection of his articles, C'est La Guerre: Early Writings 1978-1983 (2011).

SCARLETT'S FALL Scarlett's Scared CD
Scarlett's Fall is a duo formed in 2014 by Ruth Childs (British-American performance artist and singer based in Geneva) and Stéphane Vecchione (Swiss performance artist and musician based in Lausanne). They define themselves as dirty-girlie-kitchen-pop, mixing catchy melodies and repetitive looping with fragile vocals and provocative texts. Out of their playfully ironic and poetic universe you can hear shades of Can, Broadcast, and Young Marble Giants. Scarlett's Scared is Scarlett's Fall's ironically seductive second album. It all started with a (blue) demonstration vinyl entitled The Incredible Sounds Of Synclavier II, released by New England Digital Corp in 1981, to promote the first digital sampling system. Its content gave the basic atmosphere for the whole album: each of the ten tracks samples a specific Synclavier sound. Add haunting melodies, mysterious vocals, and fun beats and you get Scarlett's Scared complete. As the title suggests, Scarlett's Scared is about being scared and takes its roots from vintage movies, such as Klute (1971) and Metti, Una Sera A Cena (1969), that deal with phone stalkers, insomnia, sexual tension, vampires, ghosts, and explosive watermelon attacks.

Mixed with help from Jacob Trombetta; Mastered by James Plotkin. Embroidery by Elyn Middleton; Design by Keith Freund. Gatefold sleeve; Edition of 500.Keith Freund on Music For Small Ensemble & Computer: "I've always thought it'd be really cool to have someone write something smart and poetic about a release of ours, but here I am again trying to type this out myself and not have it be boring and embarrassing. I don't know, I guess I'll just be blunt and direct and hit 'send' ASAP. Music for Small Ensemble & Computer is a collection of what I call the 'DIY shitty classical' pieces me and Linda have been working on for a couple years. Using an inherited piano, freeware, and the basement floorcore spirit of discovery to trespass into a typically more rarefied style. And thankfully a few actually-trained friends lent their skills to the mess. To me, it's the sound of the two of us struggling to find peace and stability for ourselves, family, and small community in an often chaotic and hostile world. I'm really excited about this collection. We previously released these pieces on as-limited-as-possible 12" runs and went through them very quickly, so it's cool that MIE is giving them a wider issue. Linda and I have made quite a few records now, but to me this is really the closest to being 'us'. Put a headphone jack in my tombstone and have this playing. Does any of this make any sense?"

Rocksteady: The Roots Of Reggae documents the recordings being made for this very album at the Tuff Gong studios, Kingston, Jamaica in April 2008, telling the story of the original vocalists and musicians involved. Included are excerpts from an all-star reunion concert staged in Kingston alongside older archive material. Never before in the history of Jamaica, which already occupies a unique place on the world map of song, has such an illustrious collection of singers and players been assembled. The album showcases 15 rocksteady classics in sparkling, deeply inspired new versions, recorded in the studio which also played host to album sessions of a certain Bob Marley. Under the musical direction of Ernest Ranglin, a guitarist of considerable renown not only on the reggae circuit, and mixed by legendary engineer Errol Brown -- employ at Duke Reid's Treasure Isle studio in the sixties -- and freshly arranged by Lynn Taitt, each of the new versions was recorded using authentic instruments to capture the true rocksteady style. In the context of Jamaican musical history, rocksteady enjoyed a relatively brief, two to three year spell in the limelight, taking over from the faster-paced, predominantly instrumental ska sound of the early part of the decade and laying the foundation for reggae to come with an emphasis on bass, more intricate melodies, and bringing singers and vocal trios to the fore. Between 1966-1968, an unprecedented, and unrepeated, proliferation of marvelous songs moved many fans to call this the golden age. Hopeton Lewis, one of the creators of rocksteady, the great DJ U-Roy, an international pioneer of toasting, Stranger Cole, Derrick Morgan, and Leroy Sibbles are just a few of the legendary figures taking part, some having met to play together for the first time in forty years. This wonderful musical style from Jamaica and the great personalities behind it would certainly be deserving of similar belated recognition. A historical work in every respect. Features: Leroy Sibbles, Hopeton Lewis, Judy Mowatt, U-Roy, Ken Boothe, Derrick Morgan, Dawn Penn, Stranger Cole, Gladstone Anderson, Marcia Griffith, and Lynn Taitt. Includes a 16-page booklet containing extensive liner notes by the American music journalist Chuck Foster.

Richenel played with several disco acts and cultivated an extravagant cross-gender stage persona. Recorded amongst the turmoiled punk and squatter scene of Amsterdam, against a backdrop of drugs and social unrest, the La Diferencia sessions reflect a unique mix of punk aesthetics with synthesized bedroom funkiness. GAUSSIAN CURVE The Distance LP
In the spring of 2016, Gigi Masin, Jonny Nash, and Marco Sterk got together in the studio for the first time since they recorded Clouds (MFM 004LP, 2014), the critically acclaimed debut album from their Gaussian Curve project. By the time they reconvened in Sterk's new studio in Amsterdam, a stone's throw away from the temporary, second-floor space where they recorded Clouds, much had changed. When they first got together in March 2014, it was for a spontaneous, weekend-long exploration of shared musical passions. They were merely three new friends expressing themselves, and having fun in the process. By the time they got together again last year, the album they recorded on that famous weekend had taken on a life of its own. To their surprise and delight, Clouds had become one of the most admired ambient albums of the 21st century. They'd initially reconvened in the studio to rehearse for their first live performances. It soon became clear that all three members were brimming with ideas for new Gaussian Curve material. Over the four days that followed, and fueled by the same spontaneous working method that drove Clouds, a new album began to take shape. Although their methodology remained the same, the inspirations were different. Whereas Clouds was intimate by design, The Distance reflects more on spaciousness, distance, and time. It is instantly recognizable as a Gaussian Curve record, but feels different in scope and tone. The Distance is a different musical beast to its predecessor, but shares the same timeless, emotion?rich feel that made Clouds such a hit. Still, the fundamental ingredients remain the same: Masin's masterly piano and synthesizer work, Nash's blissful, meandering guitar, and Sterk's synths, drum machines, and production. The Distance is an album brimming with fresh ideas, and more complex musical arrangements. It's the sound of three confident collaborators crafting magical musical moments in their own unique way. This expansive new approach can be heard on "T.O.R.", where Nash's haunting trumpet and hazy guitars wrap themselves around the kind of hypnotic piano and synth patterns that were once the preserve of American minimalist composers, in the gently breezy positivity of "Four For You", and in the loved-up chord progressions and bubbly electronic beats of "Breathe". Close your eyes, and you'll also hear it amongst the sunrise shuffle of "The Distance", Masin's hushed vocals on "Another Place", and within the kosmische-influenced sensuality of "Ceremony".

ELAN VITAL Shadow Self LP
LP version. Élan Vital -- comprising Renee Barrance (keyboards, vocals), Danny Brady (synths, drum machines, live mixing) and Nikolai Sim (bass) -- formed in 2015 in Dunedin's None Gallery, an undefined artist-run creative community which is also the home of Death And The Maiden. The expression Élan Vital describes the vital force. The music on Shadow Self seems to symbolize that life impulse in an ambiguous zone between machine and human worlds. Their sound blends keyboards, evoking psychedelic organ sounds of 1960s garage rock, together with contemporary European synth-pop dance music, layered on analog drum machines. Distorted, overdriven bass guitar adds a further element of chaos into the mix. Feedback-strafed soundtrack instrumentals for imaginary dystopian sci-fi films bloom into uplifting and gloomy melodic dream-pop catharsis about memory, longing, and obsession.

DISTRACTIONS, THE Kindly Leave The Stage LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl. After achieving some sort of world record by leaving a 32-year gap between the release of their first and second albums -- 1980's Nobody's Perfect and 2012's The End Of The Pier -- The Distractions have sped things up, and now after a gap of less than five years, they present their third (and final) album, Kindly Leave The Stage. The story of The Distractions -- from Manchester punk era legends to critically-rated pop geniuses to a quarter century of silence, and then a more-than-slight return with a 21st century album of grown-up, wise, elegiac guitar music -- is also the story of Mike Finney, one of the great blue-eyed soul voices, and Steve Perrin, a guitarist whose sense of melody and lightness is the perfect counterfoil to Finney's emotional grit. Mike and Steve have been the core of The Distractions for 40 years -- it's been a long, strange trip.

Repressed. Irish artist Áine O'Dwyer follows her highly acclaimed Music For Church Cleaners vol. I and II double LP (2015) with two LP releases, Gegenschein and Locusts (PP 027LP). While continuing to explore the church organ as the primary instrument, these two releases steer away from Church Cleaners in both sonic content and themes explored. Gegenschein was recorded at the Franciscan Friary in Limerick, Ireland. O'Dwyer gained access to the Friary in 2012 and explored both the pipe organ and the space in its disused state. What becomes of a sacred space after the dispersion of the spirit, after the light has been switched off, after the deconsecration?

BEST, MANFORD Come Go With Me CD
PMG present a reissue of Manford Best's Come Go With Me, originally released in 1978. "With the Super Wings in mutiny and a trail for the manslaughter of his former bandmate, Spuds Nathan, still hanging over his head, Manford Best came out swinging with Come Go With Me. It's a chirpy, calypso-influenced insight into the state of his mind and his first solo album. Recorded at Godiac Studios with the guys from Rock Town Express and a few of the Super Wings, Come Go With Me was the first album recorded on a new Tascam system that Goddy Oku had just bought back from London. The sound is crisp, clean and bright, perfectly suited to tracks like 'Come Go With Me' and 'Good Morning' and a welcome respite to the darker lyrics on 'Nobody Cares' and 'Far Far Far Away.' One of the stranger cuts is 'There's a Woman On My Mind (Mother)'. Manford regarded his mother as something of prophetess and would act instantly and without hesitation on the revelations in her 'dreams'. Come Go With Me was self-financed and released on Manford Best's own MacSeries Records label. Only 1,000 copies were pressed and he distributed them from the back of a Toyota van himself. A rare Afro gem, deserving of its place in the sun again." --Peter Moore

GYAN, KIKI Feelin' Alright LP
LP version. PMG present a reissue of Kiki Gyan's Feelin' Alright, originally released in 1983. "Kiki Gyan's star didn't burn long, but it burned bright. Drafted into the Afro funk super group, Osibisa, at 15, he was millionaire by 18 and regarded as one of the best keyboardists in the world by 21. 'Life was good, man,' he told journalist Kweku Sakyi-Addo. 'Too good!'. In 1983 he dived head first into the New York party scene. He took a lot of drugs, spent a lot of time in clubs and got together a team of crack local musicians to record Feelin' Alright, his third and final solo album. All the Kiki Gyan trademark elements are present and correct. The album is a unique blend of highlife music with electronic funk and disco. 'Rosemary' follows the formula most closely and was a hit across Nigeria and Ghana. But on 'Give It To Me', 'Love To Love You' and the title track, you'll hear a slicker, boogie-influenced sound that has made Feelin' Alright one of his most sought-after albums. Kiki Gyan would never hit such heights again. His addictions eventually took hold and he died aged 47, destitute and alone. Feelin' Alright remains one of the brightest stars in his extraordinary constellation." --Peter Moore

IGIETTEMO, TONY Hot Like Fire LP
LP version. PMG present a reissue of Tony Igiettemo's Hot Like Fire, originally released in 1980. "Leaning against a wall, his shirt unbuttoned to his navel and cradling a tumbler of something strong and sophisticated, Tony Igiettemo looks every bit the smooth talking '80s gent. When you put Hot Like Fire on the turntable and drop the needle, however, it is immediately clear that Smooth Tony is also a little bit freaky. Sirens, slap bass, squelchy synths and a titchy high hat that just won't give up, Hot Like Fire is a cosmic call from a dancefloor on the far side of the universe. Produced by John Malife - the go-to man in Nigeria when you wanted your funk freaky - it's driven by a heavy low end that compels you to move. 'Baby You Can Do It' is Boney M's 'Daddy Cool' via a sweaty Nigerian dancefloor. 'I Feel So Good' has a Kool & The Gang vibe, albeit with a freaky, warbling synth. And 'Hot Like Fire' is a strange reggae/funk fusion, fueled by the righteous herb. 'We Are One' and 'Africa Must Unite', meanwhile, are post-disco, reggae-tinged calls for African Unity. 'Rock Your Baby' is the album's most relentless dancefloor banger and sums up its ethos best. Clap your hands everybody and get down on it. Tony Igiettomo is here to make your body move." --Peter Moore

AHANOTU, ADOLF Sensation LP
LP version. PMG present a reissue of Adolf Ahanotu's Sensation, originally released in 1986. "At a time when bandleaders in Nigeria used titles as an affectation, Dr. Adolf Ahanotu was the real deal. He had a PhD in music compilation and Master's degrees in education and communication. He also played a mean tenor sax, an instrument he mastered touring Owerri with the Mirabels. Ahanotu's scholarly background is apparent in the impeccable arrangements and the way each track is labelled with its musical type. The banging opening track, 'Sensation' is disco, notes the helpful doctor. The legendary 'Ijere' is to be considered Remire or Afro Jazz. 'Litany Of Freedom' is reggae, 'Cupid' is rock and 'Tropical Moonlight' classified as the blues. The mandatory ode to the nation, 'Happy Nigeria', is labelled as calypso. But these are not dry, scholarly pieces. 'Sensation' reeks of dance floor freakiness not the hallowed halls of academia. And listen to the pitch bend craziness on 'Injere'. Sure, Dr. Ahanotu had studied the rules. But he wasn't afraid to break them. From the freaked-out opening seconds of the title track you are left in no doubt: The doctor is in the house. Mastered and produced by Goddy Oku." --Peter Moore

OFO THE ROCK COMPANY Live In Europe - Fonk Afrika LP
LP version. PMG present a reissue of OFO The Rock Company's Live In Europe - Fonk Afrika, originally released in 1978. "OFO The Rock Company (originally known as OFO The Back Company) were Nigeria's first acid-rock band. Blending Hendrix and Deep Purple with shamanism and a pro-black philosophy, they cut their teeth at Fela Kuti's Afrika Shrine, developing a fearsome live reputation that intimidated every other band in Lagos. No one wanted to follow the guys from OFO, not even Fela himself. Led by the charismatic Larry Ifedioranma, OFO The Rock Company considered themselves a musical cult. Their live shows were a heady mix of mind-melting musicianship, mysticism and theatre. In 1973 the band tour Europe and Fonk Afrika gathers together the best of those performances. The moments captured range from small intimate gigs in London, where you can hear the conversation amongst the crowd, to an astonishing gig in East Germany where they played before 900,000 people. The undoubted highlight is the extended prog-rock wig out of 'Ayaya,' recorded at the Berlin gig, before an obviously delighted crowd. See if you can pick out the moment where the band were joined on stage by a long-haired hippy who insisted on playing guitar. They didn't realize it at the time but it was Carlos Santana. It was in Europe that the band fell apart, riven in two by Ifedioranma's increasingly autocratic rule. Fonk Africa remains as a precious testament to what the band did best -- playing loud and proud and putting on a show you would never forget." --Peter Moore

HEADS FUNK Cold Fire LP
LP version. PMG present a reissue of Heads Funk's (Heads Funk Band) Cold Fire, originally released in 1976. "The self-proclaimed funkiest band on the west coast of Africa, the Heads Funk Band, could arguably make that claim for the whole continent. Featuring the slick guitar of Felix 'Feladey' Odey, the slinky drumming of Eddie Offeyi and the swirling keyboard chops of Kevin 'Fortune' Coburn, nobody was funkier. And that's not even taking into account the dance floor monsters they were releasing at the same time as Akwassa. Cold Fire was their second album as the Heads Funk Band. Where their first album, Hard World (PMG 013CD/LP), was in a hurry to get you on the dance floor, on Cold Fire the funk is given room to breathe. The title track has a dark ghetto groove, straight from the mean streets of New York. 'Got To Know' has a loose, feel good vibe. 'Put On Your Funky Shoes' and the instrumental, 'Funky Port Harcourt' live up to their names. With Feladey laying down a hybrid chicken scratch/wah-wah sound over Eddie Offeyi's assured drumming, and 'Fortune' Coburn supplying the free-range keyboards, this is a band at the height of their powers. Cold Fire is killer stuff and proof that in the mid-seventies Nigeria was producing the funkiest bands in the world." --Peter Moore

MASISI MASS FUNK I Want You Girl LP
LP version. PMG present a reissue of Masisi Mass Funk's I Want You Girl, originally released in 1979. "In mid-seventies, Nigerian bands came and went with alarming regularity, rising meteorically from the slums to stardom and falling back again just as quickly. Masisi Mass Funk from Anamara State was one such band. But during their brief moment in the stratosphere, they produced a funk gem in I Want You Girl. The band was championed by Ebere Ikoro from the Hygrades. He took them under his wing after an ill-advised collaboration with Soly Dibong. They were originators not imitators, he said. He produced I Want You Girl and played on it as well. It's easy to see what appealed to Ebere Ikoro. The title track has a Manfred Mann sixties vibe. 'Care To Love Me' is a wonky, off-kilter reggae calypso number. And 'Ungrateful People' bounces along with a Sly And The Family Stone chirpiness. However, it's the gospel numbers that really stand out. 'Heavenly Father' rocks out with strident keyboards and plaintive vocals. And the relentless 'He Is To Be Praised' is an Afro-funk-rock-gospel monster, guaranteed to raise your eyes to heaven while keeping your feet firmly planted on the dance floor. Sadly, Masisi Mass Funk only released one album, their star burning as quickly as it did brightly. They went on to form First Planet, an Afro boogie band that tore up Lagos dancefloors in the '80s. But that's another story for another day." --Peter Moore

BUCKNOR, SEGUN Segun Bucknor LP
LP version. PMG present a reissue of Segun Bucknor's self-titled album, originally released in 1975. "Segun Bucknor fell in love with American soul music as a student at New York's Columbia University. Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke and Ray Charles hadn't made much of a splash in Africa at the time and when Bucknor returned to Nigeria in 1968, he was determined to bring the sound to a wider audience. The result was brand of Afro-Soul that in turn became a proto-type of Afrobeat. With his bands, The Assembly and The Revolution, he released a few politically charged tracks, but even with his energetic dance trio, The Sweet Things, turning up the heat, Bucknor couldn't compete with Fela Kuti. This self-titled album, the last he released, sees Bucknor go back to his soul roots. Released after The Revolution were disbanded, the Afrobeat affectations are scaled back and his soulful voice brought to the fore. The concerns are more personal than political. It's the sort of music the Sweet Things would nod their heads to rather than shake their booty. That's not to say the African beats aren't still there. On songs like 'The Price Of Love' and 'See And Believe' they form an intriguing bedrock for the songs to be built upon. On Segun Bucknor, the sound is sophisticated not sweaty, comforting rather than confronting." --Peter Moore

PINO & THE HEARTBEATS, GERALDO Let's Have A Party LP
LP version. PMG present a reissue of Geraldo Pino & The Heartbeats' Let's Have A Party, originally released in 1974. "It's no exaggeration to say that Geraldo Pino and his band the Heartbeats kickstarted the whole soul/funk/Afrobeat scene in West Africa. Mixing highlife, funk and jazz, and using the latest equipment, they laid waste to all before them. In 1966, Fela Kuti was a jobbing musician, eeking out a living with highlife bands. When Gerlado Pino came to town, it changed his life. 'Pino tore up the scene,' he recalls in an interview with Carlos Moore. 'I knew I had to get my shit together. And fast!' Produced by Odion Iruoje and engineered by Emmanual Odenusi, Let's Have A Party is Geraldo Pino's masterpiece. It's slick and heavy, tough and uncompromising, with musicianship that will blow your mind. It's all killer, no filler, with 'Heavy Heavy Heavy' and 'Let Them Talk' bonafide, nailed on funk classics. The Heartbeats are exactly that, a tight and efficient engine that keeps the groove moving. This is US-style funk, with an emphasis on extended percussion workouts and organ wigouts. You can't listen to 'Power To The People' without being impressed -- or compelled to dance. The extended call out to each Heartbeat in 'Let's Have A Party' is well deserved. If my house caught on fire, this is the one album I'd rescue. After one listen, I reckon you'd do the same." --Peter Moore

PILOTS ON DOPE Udopeia - The Remixes 2LP
The acoustic debut album Udopeia created by the band Pilots On Dope was issued by the Verve label in June 2014. The sound has its roots in Brazil's broad-ranging musical traditions, including bossa, samba and Afro Brazil, and evokes the golden age of the '60s. Consequently, the album went on to serve as the starting point for well-known mixers from the Pilots On Dope milieu. Taking this development to a second stage, Udopeia - The Remixes is aimed at an audience accustomed to electronic beats but also with an interest in musical reflexes and retro influences. The remix album cleverly covers this musical spectrum, from exotic Latin sounds through to contemporary electronic remix culture. The Vienna electronic movement, popular in the nineties, was a counterpart to the nu jazz movement which was emerging in Germany at the same time, which was strongly influenced by offshoots of acid jazz. During the epoch-making close of the long-lasting acid jazz trend, a series of producers became established in Germany and England, drawing on elements of Latin, Brazil, easy listening, jazz and soul, and created a veritable boom which went on to influence and inspire producers in Italy and France. Their Austrian equivalent was certainly the Vienna electronic movement which triggered a literal downbeat cult, creating a distinctive genre with its striking funk riffs. Sampling, a by-product of hip hop, was certainly a key element in the resounding success of Kruder & Dorfmeister, the pioneers of Vienna electronic. Despite the reduced tempo, this trend would conquer the dancefloor, generating its own identity and a musical code - light and raunchy, underpinned with an atmospheric soundscape, and overlaid with a pulsing rhythm in the heartbeat of flickering sound densities. The remix project brings together a wide range of producers who made history with Vienna electronic, in particular past master Richard Dorfmeister and artists from his G-Stone label including Stereotyp, Makossa & Megablast, and Gü-Mix. They are joined by fellow remixers such as Shanti Roots and the Pilots' Gerald Tomez (Vienna Scientists) and Gerhard Gigler (DJ Bunani). The newcomers Shantisan, Ksawa, and Corrado Bucci from Brescia, bring with them promising credentials and refreshing contributions. Enriched with further remixes by well-known producers including Rainer Trüby (Freiburg), Farrapo (Bologna), and Trotter (São Paolo), the result is a magnificent cross-section of remixes which have found their ideal home on the ultimate Verve label. Edition of 500.

MADRIGAL Madrigal LP
Last copies -- OFFICIAL RSD 2017 release. Subliminal Sounds present an updated reissue of a sought after psychedelic rarity, Madrigal's self-titled album, originally released in 1971. Finally, the mysteries can be dispelled and the true and amazing history of this unique record can come to light. The great, lost grail of the NYC freak underground! Trading hands for $3-4000 on the rare occasions it is offered, Madrigal has grown into a legend among fans of psychedelic drone music. Here's what the book Acid Archives (2006) has to say: "... A rather amazing do-it-yourself descent into the murkiest depths of the early 1970s underground. It's two guys sitting in what sounds like a boiler room, equipped with a drum machine, an electric guitar & bass and some oscillators, hot-wiring themselves into the lysergic flow of the now. The music drones and cavorts while incomprehensible screams and dialogue lurk in the background, as heard through a locked door. The atmosphere is as thick as in a nightmare..." But Madrigal's strongest achievement may be the seamless shift from the harrowing visions of machinery and faceless suffering on side one into a string of dark, haunting folk-rock numbers on side two, a transition as natural as if these were simply the two sides of the same unclassifiable coin. Pioneering at the time and still unique today, vague parallels could be made to Suicide, The Patron Saints and Velvet Underground's third LP (1969), but first and last, Madrigal can only be understood on its own. Presented here, remastered for superior sound and, for the first time, with the original artwork; Comes with a deluxe 12-page booklet with an in-depth interview with the creator of the album, and lots of never before seen photographs; Limited edition of 600.

The sounds were captured on tape in their music workshop in the countryside and consists mainly of improvised moments where the sounds travels beyond time and space, something that has been TGS hallmark over the years. Perhaps there's a form of melancholy over some of the album, much depending on how cruelly and suddenly Mera and Torbjörn passed away, but also on a little lighter and crazier whim. Everything is recorded live so there are no euphemistic circumstances, rather everything is pared down, bared bone drones, sounds traveling in the magical improvised unknown with no makeup, just as life can be when the feeling has control. A manifestation of improvised timelessly organic music and free creation. Real life!

TAKADA, MIDORI Through The Looking Glass LP
Repressed. LP version. Comes in a Stoughton "Tip-On" jacket; Includes printed inner sleeves. Palto Flats and We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present the highly-anticipated reissue of Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's sought after and timeless ambient/minimal album Through The Looking Glass, originally released in 1983 by RCA Japan. Considered a holy grail of Japanese music by many, Through The Looking Glass is Midori Takada's first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience. Midori Takada is a composer, multi-percussionist, and theater artist renowned in Japanese vanguard circles. Midori has released two solo albums: Through The Looking Glass and Tree Of Life (1999) and wrote music for Tadashi Suzuki's theater plays. Her hypnotic, minimalist music is based in the concept of coherence between sound and the human body. She performs solo on marimba and other percussion instruments. She debuted on the scene of Berlin Philharmonic, performing with the RIAS Symphonie-Orchester Berlin just after graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1974. She continued her career with solo concerts in Japan and abroad. In the 1980s, Midori began to explore the traditional music of Asia and Africa. Her fascination resulted in joint projects with Kakraba Lobi from Ghana, Lamine Konte from Senegal, Farafina Band from Burkina Faso, and Korean musicians: zither player Chi Seong-Ja, flute player Won-Il, and saxophone player Kang Tae-Hwan. She also led Mkwaju Ensemble's innovative percussion project and still performs with free-jazz band Ton-Klami with Kang Tae-Hwan and jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh. Takada's compositions have a remarkable way of affecting the imagination. Her minimalist, contemplative music is filled with the concept of infinity and reminds us of a moon voyage, falling stars, a journey into the ocean, or a walk in the garden. The trans melodies, initially simple, begin to loop and splinter, their rhythm breaking and thickening, slowly drawing the listener into another reality. This fully licensed reissue comes with extensive liner notes.
