LEVENT LeVent LP
LP version. 180 gram purple vinyl. LeVent are Maryna Russo (bass), Heike Rädeker (bass VI/vox), and Frankie Neumeier (drums). Berlin based trio LeVent got stoned, forgot to replace their guitarist, and then kept his name anyway. Formed in August 2015, the band has kept their shit together enough to have shared the stage with a bunch of talents including Kadavar, The Underground Youth, and Die Nerven, to name a few. They also self-released a four-track EP on cassette in 2016. LeVent is their debut album, released on A Recordings. Like a drunken driver, LeVent swerves up over the curb, drives straight through the garage, and totals their ride somewhere out in a goat farm. Bleating at its most danceable, they carry listeners far away to get lost in nice nonsense, stuck in heavy forgetting, and transfixed on what was, leaving you thirsty for more. Heike, from the band, says, "When someone comes up to you after a concert saying 'I'm going to make you a record' you are stoked for the moment, but you don´t reckon it will happen..." Half a year later Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre called LeVent in to his Cobra Studio in Berlin. Teaming up with studio engineer Andrea Wright from Parr Street Studios Liverpool, the red button got pushed. After what was a super pleasant experience of recording and mixing, they are now ready to present LeVent.

EUL, FELIX Dranske EP 12"
On Dranske EP, Felix Eul takes an adventurous, allowing you can get as close to a "Quasar", the most luminous object in the known universe, as no man has ever been before. This voyage takes you to the final frontiers and beyond, where you'll encounter strange aliens like the "Pianoctopus", known to sneak its tentacles into the ears of unsuspecting astronauts and to tickle their skullcaps from the inside. During the flight, you'll experience turbulences, or sudden, adrenaline-loaded outbursts of euphoria. They are caused by trans-dimensional discharges alongside the spaceship, a phenomenon known as "Interplay". Timboletti provides a remix.

KO SHIN MOON Ko Shin Moon CD
Analog synthesizers, drum machines and oriental lutes. Ko Shin Moon is the first contemporary artist signed and produced by Akuphone. It reflects perfectly the new cosmopolitan sound that the label wanted to highlight. Blurring the lines between time and space, Ko Shin Moon mixes acoustic instruments from various regions of the world, analog devices, traditional music, electronic arrangements, sampling, and field recordings. As the soundtrack of a patchwork journey, the band's first LP conveys one along a succession of hybrid territories, imaginary sound landscapes, multi-colored collages: acid dabke, Turkish-Greek disco, cosmic raï, new beat molam, Tibetan ambient, synth wave Hindi filmi, rickshaw dance music -- future sound has no borders.

1115 Post Europe CD
"... A listener's first impression may suggest the enchanted soundscape of a fatigued electronic soloist, but 1115 are a duo: Fehler Kuti and Grey provide us with a sonic vision that can only emerge from the synthesis of two radical minds. Think of the meetings of Suicide, Yello, or The KLF: A pop big bang of conceptual art and bodily music. The fusion of Fehler's onomatopoeic vocal tracks and Grey's bass/organ/808-drum machine elements create a unique and original work; an Afrofuturistic musique concrete, which could not be heavier in its psychedelic might. Totally hypnotised, we hear old instruments, lost along an ocean passage. . . . The plot of this supposed instrumental music is, in short, a story of 'invisibility' -- and of how this invisibility, experienced as negation and extinction, is given a 'visually audible' expression through the invention of a new language. . . . If we follow 1115 down their Underground Railroad, a mythology that becomes more vivid with each station emerges, and takes on a cartographic form. A spatial sculpture made of music! Fehler Kuti performs the role of the Invisible Stranger -- without any use of language in the semantic sense -- not in a dissimilar way to Caetano Veloso on Araçá Azul or Miles Davis, though different and novel. Once you understand that Miles Davis did nothing else but tell stories of racism and alienation throughout his career, will you then understand Post-Europe. Post-Europe is therefore not only music, just as an opera is not only music. Drawn into the deep, through subtext and shiftwork, 1115 dive through a stream of electronic music alongside colleagues like Arca and Dean Blunt, Drexicya and Dopplereffekt, as well as Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and Sun Ra. But the voices of the libretto belong to the non-musicians and non-artists, the erased and forgotten. The invisibles. If we listen to the phonograph patiently while playing this music, unheard sounds surface. In time, voices tear off, and become distinct. They say what they need to say. They let others speak. And suddenly there is a space... that unfolds, that speaks. Deep inside it, an ancient lament emerges, wrapped within the invisible words: What did I do to be so black and blue? ..." --Pico Be CD version includes fold-out poster.

ORCHESTRE POLY-RYTHMO DE COTONOU Volume Two -- Echos Hypnotiques 2LP
2017 repress. Double vinyl version, in deluxe gatefold sleeve with a poster and printed inner sleeves which replicate all of the liner notes from the CD version booklet. Subtitled: From The Vaults Of Albarika Store 1969-1979. Four years in the making, Analog Africa finally presents the highly-anticipated second volume of music from Africa's funkiest band, the mythical Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. Volume One (The Vodoun Effect: Funk & Sato from Benin's Obscure Labels, 1973-1975), released by Analog Africa at the end of 2008, was a collection of amazing lo-fi recordings produced for various labels around Benin. Volume Two showcases superbly recorded tracks, courtesy of the EMI studios in Lagos, Nigeria, one of the best studios in the region. All tracks here were recorded for the mighty Albarika Store label and its enigmatic producer, Adissa Seidou. The idea for this compilation was born five years ago when Samy Ben Redjeb, Analog Africa's founder and compiler, first heard the addictive funk track "Malin Kpon O" (included here), which was originally released in 1975 on Albarika Store. That discovery triggered the compiler's curiosity and what followed was a long journey through the musical history of Benin and the history of its most important ambassador, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. The result: approximately 100 pictures, 120 master tapes, 20 hours of interviews and a few hundred Orchestre Poly-Rythmo vinyl records -- 500 songs in total -- some of which previously unreleased. Almost half of those tracks were recorded for Benin's number one label -- Albarika Store. During the period presented here -- 1969 to 1979 -- the mighty Orchestre was without any doubt one of Africa's most innovative groups. Capable of playing any style of music, the band moved from traditional Vodoun rhythms to funk, sato, Latin, sakpata, psychedelia and Afro-Beat seamlessly and quickly became the powerhouse of Benin's music scene. Some of the planet's most exciting rhythms are related to the complex Vodoun religion born in Benin. Those rhythms, supported by chants and dances, have been transmitted from generation to generation and are still being performed to this day, a few hundred years after they were created. The composers and arrangers of Orchestre Poly-Rythmo understood that they were surrounded by a gold mine of inspirational sounds which, if modernized and mixed in with whatever was in fashion at that particular moment, could have a strong impact on the urban population. Those astonishing combinations can be heard here, all mixed into a heavy hypnotic sound -- Les Echos Hypnotiques.

ORCHESTRE POLY-RYTHMO DE COTONOU Volume Three -- The Skeletal Essences of Afro Funk 1969-1980 2LP
2017 repress; gatefold double LP version. Analog Africa presents a new compilation of 14 funky tracks by the legendary Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou from Benin. Following two previous Poly-Rythmo collections released by the multiple award-winning label, 2008's The Vodoun Effect (AACD 064CD/AALP 064LP) and 2009's Echos Hypnotiques (AACD 066CD/AALP 066LP), this third compilation is another proof that our ears are facing "one of the funkiest bands in the world." Starting in 2005, Samy Ben Redjeb, Analog Africa's founder and compiler, made several trips to Benin, where he dug up most of the orchestra's output recorded between 1969 and 1983: hundreds of vinyl records and a few master tapes, in a total of 500 songs. With all that material in hands and the astonishing richness of the group's material, choosing the songs proved to be a tough task. Therefore, it seems only natural that it has taken a few years for this third volume to come out of Analog Africa's sonic treasure trove. The 14 tracks presented here have never been issued outside of Africa and most of them follow the spirit and sound of the first volume, The Vodoun Effect, which was a selection of songs released by small and obscure labels from this tiny country which was once known as Dahomey. Some of the songs presented here were recorded using a legendary piece of equipment -- a Swiss-made Nagra reel-to-reel recorder and one or two microphones, in private houses or open-air gardens, mostly at night. And still, it would be somewhat difficult for contemporary musicians and engineers to achieve the stunning quality of raw sound and the atmosphere obtained in these recordings, even if they booked the most modern and expensive studios out there today. One thing that immediately catches the attention listening to this compilation is the band's steamroller-like grooves employed by Gustave Bentho, the mythical bass master, and Leopold Yehouessi, the fantastic drummer -- for many, Africa's funkiest rhythm sections. The power of these tunes is phenomenal and shows true craftsmanship on both the composition and the production side. "Houton Kan Do Gome," composed by Bentho, would have made James Brown proud. "Ecoutes ma melodie" is destined to become a classic late-night tune for the many amazing tropical and Afro parties taking place around the globe. "Pourquoi pas?" and "A O O Ida" would be the kind of sound The Meters would have created were they born in Benin. On December 17th, 2012, Melome Clement, the man who formed the all-powerful orchestra, passed away of a heart attack. The "boss," as the other band members would tenderly call him, will be missed, but not forgotten. The soul of the music he created has permanently engraved itself in the soil of Benin.

VA Pop Makossa: The Invasive Dance Beat of Cameroon 1976-1984 2LP
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve with 20-page booklet; 140 gram vinyl. The Pop Makossa adventure started in 2009, when Analog Africa founder Samy Ben Redjeb first travelled to Cameroon to make an initial assessment of the country's musical situation. He returned with enough tracks for an explosive compilation highlighting the period when funk and disco sounds began to infiltrate the makossa style popular throughout Cameroon. From the very beginning, there were several mysteries hanging over Pop Makossa. It was not until DJ and music producer Déni Shain was dispatched to Cameroon to finalize the project, license the songs, scan photographs, and interview the artists that some of the biggest question marks began to disappear. His journey from the port city of Douala to the capital of Yaoundé brought him in contact with the lives and stories of many of the musicians who had shaped the sound of Cameroon's dance music in its most fertile decade. The beat that holds everything together has its origins in the rhythms of the Sawa people: ambassey, bolobo, assiko and essewé, a traditional funeral dance. But it wasn't until these rhythms arrived in the cities of Cameroon and collided with merengue, high-life, Congolese rumba, and, later, funk and disco, that modern makossa was born. Makossa managed to unify the whole of Cameroon, and it was successful in part because it was so adaptable. Some of the greatest makossa hits incorporated the electrifying guitars and tight grooves of funk, while others were laced with cosmic flourishes made possible by the advent of the synthesizer. However much came down to the bass; and from the rubbery hustle underpinning Mystic Djim's "Yaoundé Girls" to the luminous liquid disco lines which propel Pasteur Lappé's "Sekele Movement", Pop Makossa demonstrates why Cameroonian bass players are some of the most revered in the world. "Pop Makossa Invasion", an obscure tune recorded for Radio Buea makes its debut here and joins the pantheon of extraordinary songs that plugged Cameroon's makossa style into the modern world. Also features: Dream Stars, Mystic Djim & The Spirits, Bill Loko, Eko, Olinga Gaston, Emmanuel Kahe et Jeanette Kemogne, Nkodo Si-Tony, Bernard Ntone, Pat' Ndoye, and Clément Djimogne.

ORPHAN SWORDS License To Desire LP
Orphan Swords see the reissue of their License To Desire LP, originally released in 2015. The Belgian duo, formed in 2013, bring a heady, fog-shrouded sonic maelstrom to Aurora Borealis, perfect for the post-truth era. What sort of music is this? What genre do you file it under? Hard to say. There's chaos, there's unhallowed chanting, there's some fierce rhythm and there's undeniably some abuse of electronic equipment. It's best to leave the definitions up to the listener, but with titles referencing demons of Goetia and the world's oldest profession, you should let the good times roll. Their music, described as "a brutal hypnosis" by Ransom Note, has been released on Desire Records, Clan Destine and Idiosyncratics. Idiosyncratic is indeed a description that perfectly fits both their releases and live performances. Recently back from the US, they have shared bills with acts as diverse as Oathbreaker, Andy Stott, and Vatican Shadow. Their new collaborative side project Black Swords, with Stuart Argabright of Black Rain, was released on Vienna's Noiztank label (2017). Black/white label; Comes in full color folder sleeve, in heavy PVC outer sleeve; Includes download code; Edition of 200 (hand-numbered).Resident Advisor's review of License To Desire: "The ten-minute 'Marchosias' . . . builds into a droning blur with surging drums, echoed, incomprehensible vocals and all sorts of sharp edges. 'Asmoday' conjures its own mass of screeching, cackling distortion, but adds an icy sense of melody through a few sustained synth riffs, and fixes everything to a rolling kick. 'Hooker' is the most subdued thing yet from Orphan Swords, but it's no less potent. Its steady bass thrums and light, hazy swirls of harmonized noise make for a supremely soothing comedown."

ORPHAN SWORDS License To Desire Remixes LP

The sonic tangle and entheogenic orgy of the demonically inspired "Asmoday" and the tranced-out "Hooker", are given workovers by Helm, Icon Template, Black Rain, Prostitutes, and Svengalisghost. This is remix as rite of destruction, the tracks being disfigured rather than beautified for commodification. Awkward, uncomfortable listening rubs shoulders with pounding bass, post-techno hiss squall prevails. And then there's the superbly dirty fever-dream lope of the Black Rain remix. Formed in 2013, Orphan Swords is a Belgian electronic duo. Their music, described as "a brutal hypnosis" by Ransom Note. CAMILLE Ilo Veyou CD
Camille's fourth studio album Ilo Veyou, originally released in 2011. Includes "Allez Allez Allez", "L'étourderie", and "Tout Dit". CD version comes in a jewel box with a 12-page booklet."Recorded in a string of unusual locations including three church chapels and Noirlac Abbey, a 12th century Cistercian building located deep in the heart of the central French countryside, Gallic pop maverick Camille's fourth album, Ilo Veyou, reflects the low-key surroundings of its inception with a sound which playfully toys with the notions of silence and space. Indeed, it's possible to hear a pin drop on the majority of its 15 tracks, particularly on the Björk-esque, a cappella closer 'Tout Dit,' which sometimes bravely waits five seconds in-between each of Camille's whispered words; the highly atmospheric, Middle Eastern-tinged 'Le Berger,' which sees her adopt a Bollywood-style vocal alongside a simple oud arrangement, and the bilingual, hushed melodies of 'Pleasure,' which are accompanied solely by some echo-laden, muted percussion. While this sparse approach could have turned into a gimmick in lesser hands, Camille's flair for invention ensures the album never turns into a one-trick pony." --Jon O'Brien, AllMusic

Best Works Records label-owner André Lodemann is back with Birth, enlisting Swiss duo Adriatique and new-comer producer Fabian Dikof for remixes. "Birth" creates contrasts using African-drumming inspired styles paired with techy-beat programming. Adriatique create a faster more club-orientated version paring the more hooky parts of the original with beat-synth elements giving the track a more tribal feel. HAMMER AND THE LONELY ROBOT, MARIO Je L'ai Calissee La CD
Live, love, laugh. Pain, shame, guilt. Grief, consolation, action. Hope, healing, helplessness. Loneliness, egoism, disappointment. Transit-less, we experience a harmonious combination of all these and many more emotions that mesmerize us hypnotically. Here you are confronted with the truth. Uniquely smartly packaged, we may have to end up with the fact that what we can feel from one minute to the next is, indeed, irritable and engaging, but it is exactly this property that makes us human. The ten very different titles devoted to different languages and proverbs take the listener on a journey throughout the emotional worlds of human existence. Or can the interpreted be psychologized at this point, and should the journey be spoken of throughout his sentiment? Mario Hammer's music is a time of reflection and pondering. He calls it life experience. The listener may be part of this realization and perhaps will be aware of how often they can find themselves in the tracks. It is both the creativity, as well as the enormous sensitivity to sounds and sound colors, that make up this album. For fourteen months, Mario Hammer, in collaboration with Josef Steinbüchel, developed an emotion and sound carousel that not only touches the senses, but also stimulates the listener to think. Already the debut album L'esprit de L'escalier (TRAUM 036CD, 2015) was a complete success and gave the listeners a wonderful differentness. HAINO, KEIJI Watashi Dake? LP
Black Editions present the first vinyl reissue of Keiji Haino's stunning debut album Watashi Dake?, originally released in 1981. This first ever edition released outside of Japan features the artist's originally intended metallic gold and silver jacket artwork. Over the last fifty years few musicians or performers have created as monumental and uncompromising a body of work as that of Keiji Haino. Through a vast number of recordings and performances, Haino has staked out a ground all his own, creating a language of unparalleled intensity that defies any simple classification. For all this, his 1981 debut album Watashi Dake? has remained enigmatic. Originally released in a small edition by the legendary Pinakotheca label, the album was heard by only a select few in Japan and far fewer overseas. Original vinyl copies became impossibly rare and highly sought after the world over. Watashi Dake? presents a haunting vision -- stark vocals, whispered and screamed, punctuate dark silences. Intricate and sharp guitar figures interweave, repeat, and stretch, trance-like, emerging from dark recesses. Written and composed on the spot -- Haino's vision is one of deep spiritual depths that distantly evokes 1920s blues and medieval music -- yet is unlike anything ever committed to record before or since. Produced in close cooperation with Keiji Haino and legendary photographer Gin Satoh. Coupled with starkly minimal packaging, featuring the now iconic cover photographs by Gin Satoh, the album is a startling and fully realized artistic statement. Housed in custom printed deluxe Stoughton tip-on jackets, including black on black inserts, extras, and hand-colored finishes; Remastered by Elysian Masters and cut by Bernie Grundman Mastering; Pressed to high quality vinyl at RTI; Includes download code.

Following on from Blotch (BB 209CD/LP) and Nurton (BB 210CD/LP), reissued in 2016, Kram and Ding (BB 259CD/LP) now complete the quartet. Liner notes were penned by Moebius's friend, the U.S. composer, producer, and musician Tim Story. Kram was originally released in 2009.Tim Story on Kram: "Recorded in 2008, Kram's playfully disjointed rhythms and shiny plastic surfaces give us just a glimpse perhaps of Moebi's own state of mind -- content, at ease, and happy to be working on music. With small mobile recording setups in Berlin and Majorca where he and Irene split their time, he recorded when the muse struck (although he would hate the word 'muse'). In English, 'kram' means 'stuff' and the title is fitting. Synthetic, toy-like sounds skitter across the soundstage, colliding with those unlikely rhythms, and modulating in real time with Moebi's unmistakable hand on the controls. Funny, warped, joyfully cluttered, Kram unapologetically embraces its disposable sounds and sly humor. Imbued throughout with his singular conception of music and sound, it's arguably Moebius' most cheerful and mischievous album, and it's all the richer for it. Moebi was a champion of the everyday -- self-effacing in both his life and his music. In Kram, he elevates the commonplace, then promptly subverts the touchstones which make it familiar. The lack of overt 'emotionality' in his work sometimes obscures the humanity and depth that's always there, lurking behind the fabricated surfaces. Kram is a perfect example. Though he would be quick to dismiss it, the warmth of Moebi's personality drifts indelibly through it."

Small, discrete contraptions churn out curious objects as the listener strolls the factory floor, the combinations evolving as perspectives shift with each step taken. Moebi made extensive use of a relatively portable sample recorder/looper during the creation of Ding, and the freedom to capture random bits of sound in the natural (or unnatural) world must have been inspiring. These organic ambiences might have evoked a terrain that feels familiar, except of course that this is a Moebius album. Angular rhythms, disembodied voices, repeated loops of audio debris all combine to forge a facsimile of reality that is wonderfully peculiar. The earthy environments of Ding give it a remarkable depth of field, and Moebi masterfully allows a great deal of transparency in the mixes. The smallest of musical cues -- the alternating, faraway chords which float through 'Bone,' for example -- are sufficient to tie the seemingly disparate elements together into a satisfying, truly musical experience. The strands of natural, mechanical, and electronic sounds are so deftly juxtaposed that music never quite overwhelms noise, and the clamor is never allowed to stifle Ding's strange poetry. Altogether, Ding feels like something of a small revelation -- there's liberation in Moebi's willful escape from a sound palette confined solely to his synthesizers. If the notion of manipulated, overlapping field recordings sounds dry and abstract, Ding is anything but. In places, the loping, syncopated pulses suggest the polyrhythms of African music, even funk -- but it's a state which never quite materializes because the rhythm loops are almost always trimmed slightly too long or too short, deliberately interrupting the 'groove' that otherwise could have taken hold. So it's music you might conceivably dance to, if your legs aren't quite the same length. Mentally, it's much easier to dance with Ding. Shot through with Moebi's humor and extraordinary imagination, its provocative choreography of music and noise remains one of his most seductive."

MOEBIUS, DIETER Ding LP
LP version. Dieter Moebius - one half of the legendary duo Cluster and the godfather of electronic krautrock - passed away in the summer of 2015. Bureau B are reissuing his final four solo albums. Following on from Blotch (BB 209CD/LP) and Nurton (BB 210CD/LP), reissued in 2016, Kram (BB 258CD/LP) and Ding now complete the quartet. Liner notes were penned by Moebius's friend, the U.S. composer, producer, and musician Tim Story. Ding was originally released in 2011.Tim Story on Ding: "If Dieter Moebius' previous album Kram was an irreverent mélange of bright synthetic textures, 2011's Ding might be considered Moebi's industrial album. BORUSIADE/THE SIXTEEN STEPS Promises And Infatuation 12"
"Cititrax is thrilled to present a split EP by two massive talents, Borusiade and The Sixteen Steps. Borusiade, originally from Bucharest, Romania began as a DJ in the early 2000s and then started producing music in 2005. With a background in classical music, she combined her love of raw electronics, obscure themes and melodic lines to create her own signature sound. She has released on the Co?meme label as well as Correspondant. 'Infatuation' and 'Confutation' are dark, moody and intense tracks that catch you upon first listen. The flip side of the Promises And Infatuation EP features The Sixteen Steps, the brainchild of George Lanham who cut his musical teeth DJing and running events in the south of England. We have been listening to many of his tracks endlessly for a while now. They've also been a highlight of Veronica Vasicka's DJ sets as of late. 'Signals From The South' and 'Promises On The Run' are both immaculately produced, hypnotic, dance floor killers. They are sparse ebm meets smoky warehouse techno, and offer a wonderful contrast to Borusiade's layered emotive tracks that reminisce of an East Village club in the 1980s. Themes of infatuation, appearances, and anonymity appear throughout this EP from the music itself right through to the cover art. Limited edition vinyl pressing of 999 copies."

Frenchman Sebastien Bouchet is launching his brand-new Sebastopol project. New name, same deliciously deviant electronica: his debut is compiled with serious detail and a cool coherency of humanized textures, trippiness, and barbed, shadowy soul. "Assassin" shoots to kill with its pranged-out top-lines, gloriously wonked-out bass, and slurred vocal elements, while "Manethon" trips out on a broken note and melts into one of Sebastien's most magically far-out breakdowns to date. The remixers echo his unique creativity with two superb versions: Alessandro Adriani whips up dense layers of psychedelic tech on "Assassin", while Privacy adds a gritty physical crunch to "Manethon".

POWELL New Beta Vol. 1 LP
Powell returns to the fray with New Beta Vol. 1 -- seven upfront and disarmingly colorful tracks that harness a renewed energy following the intense period of production behind his densely packed debut LP, Sport (2016). Thanks, perhaps, to a looser approach and influx of new ideas and machines, the results find him at his most playfully experimental and nuanced, revealing new aspects to his mongrel sound not heard in previous releases. New Beta Vol. 1 will remind you of what made Powell's music so exciting in the first place -- goofy, unhinged sounds sculpted into hard-to-resist and unpredictable arrangements -- but in a brighter rush of clashing tones and splintering rhythms that reinforce his roots in jungle/DNB, wave, and early Belgian techno. The result is something comparable to a puckish take on AFX's mutant Analord releases or Actress's discrete circuits. This first volume is effectively the sound of someone raised on all the raving music that the UK post-2000 and the internet has to offer. But rather than some millennial emperor's new clothes, New Beta weaves its references obliquely throughout the record. Whether in the curdled gob of chromatic acid opener "Teddy", the clash of tart electro arpeggios and stepper drums of "Freezer", or the off-the-cuff electro beat down of "The Bust", Powell persistently transcends his influences in a way that's key to all his work and always thrilling to hear -- proving how to do reverential without being derivative. Despite the range of material on offer, it's testament to Powell's vision that they still sound like him overall. And if any one track sums up this distance from, and consistency with, his early work, it's the rare beat-less outing "Electric Sheep", whose visceral, strobing formation betrays a burnt-out and unusually sentimental aspect to an artist best known for all-out hedonism. Cocking a wink at the upfront sonification and syncretic mutations of late '80s Belgian new beat in both name and form, New Beta Vol. 1 identifies Powell as a more self-aware and emotional Johnny Bravo for electronic music in 2017, serving to subvert the 'roid-rage trudge of EDM and the prosaic mundanity of grid-locked line-dance music with a daringly screwball, anachronistic approach to making dancers feel strange in the rave. RIYL: Actress, AFX, Din A Testbild; all the best oddballs. Vinyl only; No digital release.

Doxy present a reissue of The Dave Brubeck Quartet's At Carnegie Hall, originally released in 1963. Recorded at the famed Carnegie Hall in New York City on Friday, February 22, 1963, this LP is simply one of the great live jazz albums of the 1960s. A date that showcases the finest elements of the storied Brubeck Quartet, which featured, alongside Brubeck's piano, alto innovator Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright, and Joe Morello on drums. This LP is perhaps the one essential Brubeck live album. While "Take Five" is rightfully a classic in that it changed everything, At Carnegie Hall reveals the band at the epitome of its musical -- harmonic, rhythmic, melodic, improvisational -- strength with near telepathic communication. In 2014, they released their last new studio album For The Love Of Money (DR 109B-CD/109LP), an outrageous concept project featuring cover versions of artists who inspired Tack>>Head, take, for example, the reggae covers they picked: "War", "Exodus", and "Black Cinderella" pay tribute to two reggae giants -- Bob Marley and Errol Dunkley -- by getting them "into Tack>>Head shape". Tack>>Head have always been famous for being acerbic commentators of the prevailing political and social conditions, and "War" and "Exodus" are the perfect soundtrack for this mission. Several remixers felt inspired by the original vive and set out to immortalize it, delivering their remix skills to create spiritual interpretations. In fact, some remixes sound better than the original... The top spot of the double CD release is CD one. Tack>>Head opened their treasure vaults and released a bunch of previously unreleased tracks from their creative path between 1985 and 1995. These tracks provide a brilliant overview of their history and creative potential. FUNKE, SASCHA Lotos Land CD
Lotos Land, the third solo album from German producer Sascha Funke, on Tokyo's Endless Flight. Funke embraces fresh sound territories without forgetting his past. With two solo albums on Ellen Alien's BPitch Control label under his wings, Funke knows what it means to write and dramatize an album. All tracks on Lotos Land are well selected. Together they built a bewitching story arc. With some singing help from the Scottish crooner David Wilson, voice of the Glasgow based melancholic dance sensation Junto Club and the Tel Aviv born musician Autarkic, exotic but yet perfect sing-along melodies partly enthrall the listeners, too. And even if Sascha Funke has been a part of the club culture since the nineties, his musical memory and sensibility goes way back before the early techno and house eruptions. For his new works, which were all produced in Berlin during 2016, he removed the dogma of functionality and shifted into a riskier, more open terrain, which does not offer mainly club sensations. Funke explains: "I think I would not have made such a diverse album without the time with Saschienne. Before Saschienne, I mainly worked sample-based and produced exclusively at the computer. By working with Julienne as Saschienne, I discovered my love for the instrument. 'Playing' with the different synths is for me the greatest progress and ultimately also the best possible form of expression for my music." For his new tracks he used several kinds of gear; from a Korg ARP Odyssey to a Dave Smith Prophet 8, Moog Voyager, Solina String keyboard, or a Yamaha Pacifica guitar, stylistically his new orchestra leads him to a mesmerizing meltdown of trance, techno, synth-wave, post-punk, and ambient particles. Funke points his finger to the emotional landscape of Lotos Land, which delivers enchanted atmospheres, sensible stomping grounds, funky twisted spheres, and tragically hip psychedelic zones. At large there is an unmistakable strong UK influence -- be it new wave, pop, or early dance and techno stuff. Sometimes the bass rolls like in a Cure song, then dreamy synth sceneries arise to stick in the mind. Also features Emily Evans. Cover art by Mule Musiq and Endless Flight Hamburg-based home illustrator Stefan Marx. It features a Marx-styled interpretation of a 1901 illustration by the British painter William Edward Frank Britten, that was made to the poem The Lotos-eaters, written by the poet Alfred Tennyson.

AZYMUTH Azimuth LP
2015 release; 2017 repress. Far Out Recordings present a reissue of the seminal debut album from Azymuth, Azimüth, originally released in 1975. Having never seen a vinyl release outside of Brazil, Azimüth is considered a milestone in Brazilian music. Azymuth -- Jose Roberto Bertrami, Ivan Conti, and Alex Malheiros, as well as Ariovaldo Contesini -- formed in the late '60s just as Os Mutantes released their debut record (1968). Whilst Mutantes were honing a psychedelic "Amazonian" version of western pop music, Azymuth were creating a futuristic, electric interpretation of US jazz -- also driven by the same rootsy Brazilian "swing" that Mutantes had harnessed. Bertrami was the drive behind Azymuth's sound -- a control freak and musical genius obsessed with the latest technology who wanted to use it to push the boundaries of music in a way that no one else in Brazil had done. His use of keyboards has drawn comparisons between Azymuth's work and Herbie Hancock's early '70s output, yet with its Brazilian swing Azymuth's electric jazz sound is unmistakably their own. Conti is an impulsive and an incredibly energetic drummer. Alex Malheiros, who learned his trade playing from the master of Brazilian swing Ed Lincoln, is one of Brazil's original groove masters. Bertrami rose to fame as an arranger in the mid-60s, and by the late '60s he was arranging for the queen of Brazilian music, Elis Regina. Released in summer 1975, the album was a minor commercial success selling 200,000 copies. Opening track "Linha do Horizonte" -- a sublime piece of melancholic electronic saudade where deep cinematic synths melt into gently strummed acoustic jazz guitar -- was chosen for a TV novella and went on to sell half a million, propelling Azymuth onto the Brazilian music scene. The rest of the album doesn't disappoint -- "Melô Dos Dois Bicudos" sees Azymuth plugging them into the Brazilian national grid for a slice of electrified psyched out samba funk with crashing military drums, shrieking sirens and psych synths. "Brazil" is a lolloping bass led groover with Bertrami's melody giving the track a charming, innocent naivety, and "Caça A Raposa" is a boogie jazz funk groover. Azimüth is the album that kick-started it all for them, the record that was the blueprint and definition of their "samba doido/crazy samba" sound. Comes in a gatefold sleeve; 180 gram vinyl; Edition of 500.

Since then, Far Out Recordings has commissioned a special one-off remix for the project, from Chicago deep-house legend Ron Trent, who has long cited Azymuth as musical heroes and one of his biggest influences. BACZKOWSKI/CHRIS CORSANO/PAUL FLAHERTY, STEVE The Dull Blade LP
"More than a decade since their first (and last) trio album, Dim Bulb (2005), 'Buffalo Steve,' Chris Corsano and Paul Flaherty are back on the attack. The three recorded as part of a larger ensemble on the Open Mouth LP, Wrong Number (2014), but they have a certain way of creating focused trio dynamics that makes babies talk in tongues and old men drool. The line-up is a bit unorthodox -- two saxes (one a goddamn baritone) and drums. You might almost be tempted to call the format European. But it'd be a canard to try and place this album in the Euro free music tradition. I mean, yeah, there is some massive outsider brawling here. Buckets of wind and clumps of tubs 'all double twisted up,' as Fred Blassie used to say. But the fire never refrains from flaming as jazz-qua-jazz, which places it a lot more squarely in the American tradition than actual squares would have you believe. These three are clearly savages, which is a far cry from people impersonating savages, if you catch my drift. Beyond that, there is an ineffably jazzoid heft to the music here. Both Steve and Paul are playing in a distinctly post-Ayler jetstream. The freedom of their runs maintains that strangely (perhaps even imaginary or projective) American connection to bar-walking R&B maniacs -- something that seems to lie at the bottom of our country's hornic subconscious. Which is not to say individual moments on this record couldn't have come from the FMP catalog, but there's a red hot holism here that will brand most asses with the stars & stripes. The Dull Blade has a strange undercurrent of swing here as well. Largely provided by Mr. Corsano's driving full kit approach, the most outward-moving passages (often those involving the inner and outer freak registers of the horns) get corralled back into more clearly terrestrial and genuinely moving. It's a great goddamn record. Once again these guys manage to defy odds and expectations, creating music that is as fully-charged and beautiful as it is warped." --Byron Coley, 2017 Edition of 400.

NUDGE SQUIDFISH You Can't Have Aliens Without The Squid LP
"Nudge Squidfish is one of the singular figures to emerge from the Columbus sub-underground rock scene of the 1970s. He was a member of The True Believers (along with Mike Rep & Tommy Jay). He cut a single for the New Age label in '82, and a couple of odd solo LPs while he was living in Nashville later in the '80s. He was a member of V-3 (along with Jim Shepard) after that. He also released a bonkers full-length cassette on Old Age that was subsequently vinylized by Columbus Discount. More recently, he has become a highly regarded disseminator of UFO videos (Google it). The music Nudge does is all over the place, and his new album takes advantage of this aggressive eclecticism as well as his urge to document it. Recorded between 1975 and 2006, the sounds here range from prog-damaged garage-rock pus to demented rambling to neo-lounge inventions recalling Gary Wilson at his most ribald, or maybe even some alternate universe version of Armand Schaubroeck. Either way, this means we're talking about world-class otherness, with lyrics that are not particularly radio safe. We're hoping this project will be but the beginning of our work with Mr. Squidfish. There is a new era dawning. Don't find yourself on the loser's side of history." --Byron Coley, 2017 Edition of 300.

D'ANDREA, REVEREND MARCO The Garden LP
Metaphysical minister from rural Ontario releases drone-scape on Jeremy Greenspan's Geej Records. Geej present the debut album by installation artist and mystic minister, Reverend Marco D'Andrea. The Garden is an album which began as an installation project fusing the objects of the vague Canadiana of the Reverend's childhood: tents, vintage speakers, and the hippie totems that line the basements of '70s suburbia. D'Andrea's sound art has in the past made use of various antiquated sound technologies, both dissecting and distilling old psych and classic rock records to an ambient core of shamanistic drone. In part, The Garden is a meditation on the Canadian tradition of camping, in particular Marco's own memories of camping in the '80s in Ontario provincial parks. "My dad had a '70s canvas tent, which has a specific feel and smell. I decided to find a vintage canvas tent for my installation and since this piece was about childhood and my father, I decided to use my dad's favorite albums as the basis of the sound. There were a few heavy psychedelic songs that made a strong impression on me as a kid." The Garden album is conceived as a mirror to the psychedelic sounds of the late '60s and early '70s, in particular the eponymous debut album of certain heavy metal originators that will be obvious to keen eyed fans. Each piece of music is an attempt to get to the raw essence of psychedelic rock, beyond musicality and the phallic narratives of indulgent hedonism, and rather to a place of reflective worship. As such, the music draws into view the essential baroque grandeur of classic rock stripped down to its essential tonalities. The title, a reference to the Hieronymus Bosch painting on the cover, is also an allusion to the biblical garden and a comment on the contemporary experience of nature as a garden that we keep for ourselves and do what we want with. This idea extends to the revolutionary aspirations of psychedelic culture, which for all its spiritual expanse and openness, was easily commodified and used to sell everything from cars to toothpaste. The lasting legacy of '60s counterculture is a lost path: as Bosch reminds us, the garden can be a dangerous place to leave.

DR. OCTAGON Dr. Octagonecologyst 3LP
"Dan The Automator's and Kool Keith's famed collaboration from the mid-'90s is celebrated with a 28-track set housed in a custom, octagonal box, with 5 unreleased songs (originals + remixes); original Pushead cover artwork; and 40 page liner notes booklet. By the mid-1990s, the rap game had been through a lot in its two decades of existence: Early-days scraping to get by and be heard; The advent of sampling; The rise of groups ranging from Run-DMC to the Wu-Tang Clan and the sprawl of Dr. Dre's shadow from the West across the globe; and solo juggernauts ranging from MC Hammer to the Notorious B.I.G. Thankfully, though, with everything that the genre had been through, there was still a lot of room to grow. And in early 1996, a new indie duo appeared that won over a whole new international audience, from hard rocks to skate punks. That pair was Dr. Octagon: Dan 'The Automator' Nakamura and Kool Keith [Thornton]. In some ways, the Dr. Octagon album is a solo release. But Keith wasn't the only hand on deck. He brought along a young, New York-based MC with him: Sir Menelik. Menelik was featured on four album tracks, starting with 'Dr. Octagon,' and proved to be an excellent super-scientific, fast-rhyming foil to Keith. And there was one final featured contributor who helped add to the album's next-level sound: San Francisco's DJ Q*Bert, who cuts on half of the album's songs. The album originally came out on The Automator's Bulk Recordings label in early 1996, with cover art by metal and punk cult hero visual artist Pushead. Pressing numbers weren't huge, but as the year went on, the buzz grew, and a slightly expanded version of the album was released on James Lavelle's London-based Mo Wax label. Then Dan took an offer from newly-formed major label DreamWorks, to re-release the album with extra tracks in mid-1997. The new domestic pressing allowed for a bigger press push, as well as the group's first and only video, for 'Blue Flowers.' Beyond 'Blue Flowers,' the album is chock-full of mind-bending tracks, like 'Earth People'; the wacked-out but sincere love ballad 'Girl Let Me Touch You'; the metal-tinged 'I'm Destructive'; Q-Bert's turntable workout 'Bear Witness'; and, of course, freaky Keith skits like 'Elective Surgery' and 'General Hospital'. Dr. Octagonecologyst is one of the most unique rap records the genre has ever seen, and this is the perfect way to celebrate it -- whether it's the first time you have heard this mind-expanding record, or the three thousandth."

AMINI, SIAVASH Tar LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl. Continuing his experiments combining elements of drone and modern classical music, Tehran based composer Siavash Amini's fourth solo album Tar explores the fragile tensions between an individual and a collective subconscious. Making its starting point the expression of these feelings in dreams and nightmares of each individual, Tar translates the images, feelings, and textures into sound. After a series of noisier and less melodic albums, Tar catches the active listener with a subtle tension created by oscillating sounds somewhere between discomfort and transcendence. Even if some parts of Tar are quite disturbing, the record never becomes simply dark. "Amini provides a satisfying mix of modern classical composition, ambient noise, granular synthesis and musique concrète with a hint of muscularity below its serene surface." --The Guardian

CACHEMIRA Jungla CD
The recording of Jungla started in June 2016. Rhythm parts were recorded live by the band in a large room in the building of their rehearsal space, resulting in long natural reverb. Lead guitars, vocals, and effects were then added in Cachemira's rehearsal room. The whole recording was done by Baptiste Gautier Lorenzo, from Brain Pyramid and Thermic Boogie, who also mixed the album with the band. The whole album was recorded analog, on an old four-track tape machine, and then mixed digitally. The record has a retro lo-fi sound with a very loud master, to reproduce their live sound. It's made of five songs, composed during the early days of the band and that's what the album reflects -- some fresh ideas from each member and jamming parts. The record is 31 minutes -- no new songs were added by the band so that the album would keep its personality and consistency.

KIRBY, LEYLAND When We Parted My Heart Wanted To Die 2LP
2017 repress. Originally released in 2009. It's a prescient hauntological elegy somewhere between Vangelis' Bladerunner OST (1982), Lynch and Badalamenti's Twin Peaks score, Erik Satie's solo Piano works, William Basinski's gradual tape decompositions, and James Ferraro's washed out visions. Back in 2009, James Leyland Kirby explained: "Here we stand, twenty years on from the first CD, and our optimism has been gradually eroded away collectively. 'Tomorrows World' never came. We are lost and isolated, many of us living our lives through social networks as we try to make sense of it all, becoming voyeurs not active participants. Documenting everything. No Mystery. Everything laid bare for all to see." A decade later, it could hardly have been more prescient. It's with this pessimistic sense of being that Kirby constructed these incredible pieces, creating a sequence of music designed to overwhelm and absorb, affecting our sense of time and place by tracing and retracing musical steps into a blur, re-using the same motifs with incremental differences, trapped in our own feedback loops of lost emotion. On this long double album, James Leyland Kirby once again acts as a spiritual bridge, holding fast against the perceived current of time and culture in order to afford a slow, lingering gaze on its ambiguous, ever-shifting ripples and eddies. Like staring at a body of gently moving water, the effect is strangely soothing and meditative, encouraging immersed reflection and dilated focus...

KIRBY, LEYLAND Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was 2LP
2017 repress; Originally released in 2009. The second part of Leyland Kirby's uniquely prescient dark ambient masterstroke, Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was (2009) finds the listener returning to Kirby's draughty corridors of processed 78s and midnight keyboard meditations is a sublime, haunting experience like no other. The listener can read his melancholic diagnosis of capitalist malaise, deferred futurism and thwarted social utopianism as a genuinely uncanny foresight of what has played out in contemporary society, in an age when Facebook and Twitter have become an all-encompassing filter for daily life and effectively assuaged the rich analog ambiguity of collectivism in favor of cold, hard, binary politics and reflexive, unthinking emotional responses. Especially in the wake of Mark Fisher's tragic passing earlier in 2017, Kirby's hauntological sentiments, embedded quite literally in titles such as "When Did Our Dreams And Futures Drift So Far Apart", and figuratively perfused through its stark negative space, now feel to resonate stronger than ever; using shared echoes of the hive mind such as classic film scores from Vangelis and Lynch/Badalmenti -- both quite literally omnipresent in imminent sequels right now -- as cues for sorrowful elegies and meditations which aesthetically resonate as much with Deathprod's liminal scapes, as a sort of mildewed modern classical flocking to Satie's tasteful ambient wallpaper. Yet it's not all doom and gloom. There's a sense of underlying sense of resilience, of resistance to Kirby's hushed, ribboning expressions which flows with a considerate pathos and open-ended emotional curiosity which belies the narcissistic reaffirmations of social media's echo chambers and dialectic cul-de-sacs, quietly striving to wrench something beautiful and affective from the clutches of a manipulative mainstream.

PRIX Historix LP
2017 repress; LP version. " 'Every time I close my eyes I fear this is just a sick dream, that there could really be such an incredible mid 70s power pop masterpiece like the Prix Historix album, and that it's really found its home on HoZac Archival, but yes it's really happening. What very well might be the most overlooked and unusually obscure offshoot of the Big Star family tree, Prix started off after Tommy Hoehn and Jon Tiven had done time in the last version of Big Star, with Hoehn contributing to the final Sister Lovers/3rd LP, and Tiven filling out the last live version of the band on their 1974 tour. The pair found themselves in 1975 looking for a new project as Tommy had sent in demos to Tiven, as well as having been called up to perform backup work on Tiven's production with Chilton's 1975 Bach's Bottom LP. Hoehn would sing backup on the Chilton songs on the Chilton recordings and vice-versa on the Prix recordings as they cross-pollinated a batch of songs that are best represented here on Historix than anywhere else. Chris Bell was roped in for production as well as guitar & backup vocals and with Rick Clark added in on bass, they headed into the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis to cut the recordings contained on this LP. Soon enough, this studio group made up an incredible collection of songs that would fluidly fade across projects, from all parties involved, very quickly in this especially creative mid 70s period, resulting in some of the most powerful rock'n roll of the 1970s, and that's really saying something. 'Sadly, Prix suffered the same bad luck as Big Star a few years prior, and only mustered two 7 inches releases in 1977 (ORK Records) and 1978 (Miracle Records) before wit's end was reached, and the rest of the truly jaw-dropping cuts on this album were hidden away on a CD-Only Japanese release in 2002 that didn't get much exposure outside of the Far East, until now. Thanks to the ORK Records Boxed set released by Numero Group last month, the world has been a bit more exposed to the previously released Prix songs, and if you like what you've heard so far, the other 3/4ths of the material contained here is going to really clean your clock. Included as well are three alternate version bonus tracks not included on the original CD release, and most of these tracks making their first appearance on vinyl here makes this LP a mandatory brick in your Memphis pop collection, and another essential piece in the Big Star family tree that's been unavailable for far too long.' -- VictimofTime.com"

OISTER 1973-74 Pre-Dwight Twilley Band 2LP
"The legendary 1973-74 'Teac Tapes' from deep inside the Dwight Twilley Band vault have been unleashed, never before available in any format, Oister was the primary name of the Dwight Twilley and Phil Seymour duo from the time they met in 1967 until the release of their Top 20 debut 'hit' single 'I'm On Fire' in 1975. The two 'halves' of the Oister formed a whole, and a tight friendship and performing partnership took flight, and with Dwight's incredible songs in hand, the two were off and running. Recording at home with one of the first (commercially-available to the public) multi-track Teac home tape machines, the Oister DIY ethic was locked in early, and just exploded with an endless stream of ethereal pop magic, most of which has never been re-recorded by the Dwight Twilley Band, remaining frozen in time. The pair were cranking out an impressive amount of original material and pressing small batches of their own acetate LPs locally in Tulsa to sell to their friends at school, of which, this 2LP collection rounds up 20 of their finest tracks, finally available to the public after over 40 years. The early, primal years of the Twilley/Seymour Oister-era are sadly undocumented until now, with this 20-track collection, freshly remastered from the original tape for vinyl for the first time anywhere, now on HoZac Archival. These songs seamlessly bridge those heavenly Everly Brothers harmonies with their beloved Anglo Pop bravado, yet keeping the sound undeniably definitive of early American Power Pop. Ghostly echoes slip through some of the delicate tracks like spirits in the night, while others crank up the juice and just ooze out that real, uncut rock'n roll, framing up their successful next incarnation as the Dwight Twilley Band. Featuring liner notes from their friend and original session engineer, Kent Benjamin, and a crisp mastering job, the Oister collection is the impossible missing link between the Sun Records snarl and the melodic prowess of the British Invasion's finest songsmiths, and now it can finally be yours. Recommended If You Like: Everly Brothers, Tom Petty, Big Star, Hollies, Badfinger, Raspberries, Emmit Rhodes, Todd Rundgren, T. Rex. 1st edition of 500 copies. Comes with free download."

RUBS, THE Impossible Dream LP
"Joey Rubbish must be stopped, but it's too late for that. As the architect of every note on this immaculate new LP, he joins the ranks of other groundbreaking modern home-recording luminaries such as Jay Reatard, Nobunny, Mikey Hyde of Medication, and Rick Crook of Lost Sounds/Lover!, all able to cover every instrumental note recorded, as well as the vocals & recording. Not a small feat and worth noting since it's such a rare thing to pull off, especially when it's this nuanced and complex, even by power pop standards. And with that, The Rubs second offering is finally here with Impossible Dream, a full spectrum of songs so tightly-knit, so cleverly-written, and so impossibly dreamy, you won't be able to pull them out of your skull for eternity. Agonizingly articulate pop that can barely contain its own excitement, these songs just keep hitting you, one after another, each better than the last, just continuously pounding their unwavering contagiousness into your brazen heart. It's not like The Rubs are reinventing the guitar with Impossible Dream, but this LP has something brilliant humming at its core, something stark, genuine, and extremely vulnerable. And yet so charming and confident, it's almost dizzying in its bravado. From the instant 'Wrong Right Girl' kicks off, it's a tense and tender tear through the highs and lows of girls, summer, breakups, and tight jeans, drizzled with a reduction of those irresistible vocal hooks. With a run through a series of songs all named after individual heart-breakers (Judy, Amy, Ruby, & Emily), from slow-burners to hyper-charged rockers, there's such a great variety of styles and deliveries you just don't see very often in modern power pop. And let's not forget, the attention to detail, as well as the overall production control, is top-notch, which really adds depth to these incredible songs. Timeless stuff that avoids any & all modern pitfalls, Impossible Dream is a new high watermark in Chicago pop lineage you really need in your life. Recommended If You Like: The Nerves, The Jeanies, Plimsouls, Nick Lowe, Real Kids, Dutchess & Duke, Rockpile, Wreckless Eric. 1st press Black vinyl edition of 300 copies. Comes with free download."

GILMORE, SCOTT Subtle Vertigo CD
There is something wonderfully uplifting and naive about the mittle European B-movie pop and library music of the 1970s. An imperfect perfection of sound palette and melody, creating and encapsulating a whole world of hypnotic intrigue. This feeling is what comes to mind when listening to the debut album of Californian Scott Gilmore. A wonderfully concocted tincture of yard sale instrumentation, Walker Brothers guitar, offbeat refrains, and home-brew synthesizers, put together with a truly different sense of perspective, from a musician seeming to exist outside of time and scene. Scott's debut is reminiscent (in more modern times) of the pre-Moon Safari Air (1997). The playful opening of "E70 No. 01" leads into the Bowie and Eno-esque shimmerings of "Europe" and the Gainsbourg hazed moments of "Flight Through Grey" and "Subtle Vertigo". The album closes with "Walking Underground", a valley boy diary of the outsider looking inwards at the bizarrity of everyday life. This is a travelogue of the timeless and gently obscure, a bunch of rarities all in one place, at one time, woven together with an accomplished sense of harmony, counterpoint, and vision. From the river side of the Dordogne, to the Grünewald of Berlin, the white sands of Playa de Des Illetes, and the urban sprawl of Van Nuys, this is an alternative sonic reality sent to free the mind and open the heart, as the sun rises high in the sky and the cotton wool heat envelopes you in its gilded cage. LOFFLER, CHRISTIAN A Forest 2x12"+CD
Originally released in 2012. Christian Löffler stays in the forest with his debut album. After the single Aspen (2012), which is named after a certain kind of tree that is typical for his home region in the north of Germany, he now comes along with a full-length album called A Forest. The closeness to nature in Löffler's work is more than just an escape from the urban world. For the time he produced the album, Christian lived in a small house near Usedom. There was not much more than a room and a window with a view into the forest. While wandering through the woods and out to the sea, he captured many sounds that found a way into his music. The sound of leaves and breaking waves create a sometimes melancholic and sometimes threatening atmosphere. Wooden sounds are also often used in his tracks. Around these sounds Christian Löffler creates music, that can't be associated with the rough and industrial atmosphere from urban life very much, but more with the warm and melancholic vibe of mother nature. A very new aspect in Christian's work on A Forest is the use of vocals. While he used vocal samples for the first time in his collaboration with Ki-colleague and friend Steffen Kirchhoff on their split EP for Ki Records (2011), more complex vocal structures find their way into his music on A Forest. In the track "Feelharmonia", Christian collaborates with the Danish musician Gry Noehr Bagøien and creates a hypnotic track in which the vocals slowly develop into really sung words. On "Eleven", he works with Mohna, singer of Hamburg based band Me Succeeds, and uses her fragile voice throughout a whole track. Another special piece on A Forest is "Swift Code", on which Christian works together with the lyricist and poet Marcus Roloff. The two met at the "Frankfurt poetry festival" in 2011 and decided to do something together. The result is a track with sometimes implicit and sometimes explicitly threatening poem passages that fit perfectly into Löffler's sound realm. The cover was also made by Christian Löffler, who also works as an artist on paintings and photography. He captured the image during one of his many walks throughout the forests near Usedom.

ORB, THE Moonbuilding 2703 AD 2LP
2017 repress. Gatefold double LP version. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl. Includes CD. Iconic electronic music pioneers The Orb return to Kompakt with Moonbuilding 2703 AD, another major slice of psychedelic synth bliss, obscure loops, and deep ambient textures tossed in swinging breakbeats and powerful basslines. Installing a forward momentum rather unusual for a genre-defying project like this, the latest effort from masterminds Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann follows their 2005 album success on Kompakt, the cheekily named Okie Dokie It's The Orb On Kompakt (KOMP 045CD/KOM 128LP) -- as well as several contributions to Kompakt's Speicher and Pop Ambient series -- but, more importantly, it finds the legendary duo at the peak of its creativity, ringing in another essential phase in what can only be called a groundbreaking career. True to form, Moonbuilding 2703 AD features a small track list, but turns each one of its four cuts into a mini-epic in its own right. Opener "God's Mirrorball" hits the ground floating, employing a handful of cozy statics to great effect before finally discharging into an intricate mosaic of atmospheric, melodic sketches and gripping rhythms. With a hypnotic runtime of more than 14 minutes, it immediately establishes a blueprint for the other album tracks to follow, perfectly illustrating the vast extent of the artists' vision and their impressive skills in luring in listeners -- welcome to The Orb's sonic labyrinth, where nothing is what it seems and the unexpected waits just around the corner. Likewise, follow-up track "Moonscapes 2703 BC" presents itself as a uniquely versatile affair sitting comfortably between ambient flourishes and beat-driven focus, holding as many twists and turns as a caper movie, but carefully grounding every single one of its cliffhangers in its impeccable flow. With a runtime of approximately nine minutes, "Lunar Caves" is the shortest jam of the bunch -- and also the most ethereal, keeping its rhythmic content to a bare, pulse-like minimum and opting for enticing, freewheeling synth textures instead. Album closer and title cut "Moonbuilding 2703 AD" introduces a surprisingly jazzy vibe mingling rather well with the wealth of electronic tricks up its sleeve -- even indulging in abrasive bass sweeps and a breathtaking multitude of different rhythm sections constantly switching places. It's a fitting closing act for a full-length as multifaceted as this, as idiosyncratic as possible and as muscular as needed. Cover design by iconic graphic wizards The Designers Republic.

Cellular Automata is the new album from Dopplereffekt (Rudolf Klorzeiger and To-Nhan), their first in ten years since 2007's Calabi Yau Space on Rephlex. Cellular Automata approaches mathematical growth and decay as an iterative process, with each data input considered individually relative to the overall model. The result represents one of the group's boldest creative endeavors, defying expectations while remaining unmistakably Dopplereffekt. Cellular Automata is the third Dopplereffekt release to come via Berlin's Leisure System label, following 2013's Tetrahymena EP (LSR 007EP) and 2014's Hypnagogia (LSR 012EP).

ASHLEY, ROBERT Automatic Writing CD
2017 repress; 1996 release. Automatic Writing compiles three early Robert Ashley works from 1967-79 -- some of his most experimental works. Composed in recorded form over a period of five years, "Automatic Writing", originally issued on Lovely Music in 1979, is the result of Robert Ashley's fascination with involuntary speech. He recorded and analyzed the repeated lines of his own mantra and extracted four musical characters. The result is a quiet, early form of ambient music. The piece rather famously formed the basis for Nurse With Wound's A Missing Sense (1997). Steven Stapleton's commentary on the recording: "A Missing Sense was originally conceived as a private tape to accompany my taking of LSD. When in that particular state, Robert Ashley's 'Automatic Writing' was the only music I could actually experience without feeling claustrophobic and paranoid. We played it endlessly; it seemed to become part of the room, perfectly blending with the late night city ambiance and the 'breathing' of the building." The piece features the voices of Ashley and Mimi Johnson, with electronics and Polymoog backing, with a switching circuit designed and built by Paul DeMarinis. "Purposeful Lady Slow Afternoon" and "She Was A Visitor" are excerpts from an opera entitled "That Morning Thing", composed in 1966-67 as a result of Ashley's impulse to express something about the suicides of three friends. "Purposeful Lady Slow Afternoon", originally issued in 1968, is a woman's description of a sexual experience. Ashley attempts "to demonstrate the dichotomy between the rational-whatever can be explained in words-and its opposite-which is not irrational or a-rational, but which cannot be explained in words." The lead voice performed by Cynthia Liddell, the processed back-up chorus, the recurring bell tone, and the pervading tape hiss, create an unsettling mood. "She Was a Visitor" was originally issued on the electronic compilation Extended Voices in 1967. It is another form of description, intended to be understood as a form of rumor. The chorus is divided into groups, each headed by a leader. A lone speaker repeats the title sentence throughout. The separate phonemes of this sentence are picked up freely by the group leaders and are relayed to the group members, who sustain them softly and for the duration of one natural breath. The time lag produces a staggered, chant-like effect, with the sounds moving outward from the nearest performer to the farthest. Booklet notes by Robert Ashley.

COLOGNE TAPE Welt CD
The totality of the many in one -- Cologne Tape, an on-and-off gathering of artists from all over the world, counts as its members Ada, Barnt, Jens-Uwe Beyer, Jörg Burger, John Harten, Philipp Janzen (Von Spar), Mario Katz, John Stanier (Battles), and Axel Willner (The Field). These artists live in Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg, and are rarely all in the same place, but whenever they are each of them always has the feeling that something relevant needs to be done. The ensemble's name represents a city and the musical recordings that are made in it. Their first release, Render, marked the start of the Magazine label in 2010 and found its way into DJ sets by famed artists like Dixon -- with music that didn't necessarily have the dancefloor in mind. Since then, small and absolutely sublime pieces of Cologne Tape have appeared in public, including a previously unreleased track that the group incorporated into their mix for Dummy and a contribution to Turner Prize-nominated English artist Phil Collins's 2015 double LP My heart's in my hand, and my hand is pierced, and my hand's in the bag, and the bag is shut, and my heart is caught, and the bag is shut, and my heart is caught. And now, Cologne Tape return with Welt, bringing the world eight musical arrangements performed and recorded at Dumbo Studios, Cologne. Stanier and Willner refined the unfiltered emotions of these sessions with drums and synths after the fact, before the group arranged the material into a dramatic story arc under the direction of Beyer. The recordings also feature friends of the collective including Mexican artist Rebolledo, guitarist Burkhard Mönnich, and singer Isis Lace, all of whom happened to be close by and joined the band spontaneously during their musical ritual. A freewheeling ceremony of grand piano, synthesizers, vibraphone, organ, drums, guitar, and more, Welt is a work of panoramic music that offers listeners entrance to a world of deeply reflective sounds and rhythms. Jewel-case CD version is presented in a slipcase.

HALLAIS, PHILIPPE An American Hero CD
Philippe Hallais returns to Modern Love with An American Hero, the first album under his own name. It follows his label debut as Low Jack with Lighthouse Stories in early 2016 (LOVE 102LP). An American Hero is by some distance his most important work to date, setting aside the squashed dancefloor productions of his Low Jack alias for an album of emotive, indefinable ambient pieces. After working through different subcultural musical languages as Low Jack, with An American Hero, Philippe takes inspiration from the TV biopics of high-performance athletes for an album of exceptional emotive impact; somewhere between pastiche, tragedy, and electronic futurism. Fascinated by the sports documentaries mass-produced by the US TV channel ESPN, Hallais transcribed and amplified its dramatic recipes. These form the material of tearful soap operas which develop the same narrative ad nauseam; the rise to the top, the betrayal, decline, salvation, comeback, and ultimately, nostalgia and regret. The TV formatting reduces the life of these high-level athletes to a generic tale, transforming them into impersonators of their own lives through extreme use of editing, slow motion, and musical themes. Acting as a Greek tragedy, An American Hero delves into the dislocations of the mythology of sports and its achievement in mass entertainment; whereby the hero becomes a dispensable and mimetic body. Hallais delves into this unusual portrayal of triviality and disaster, naivety and cynicism that make the real life and ordeals of the hero indistinguishable from their scripted form on TV. This obsession with storytelling and the creation of bigger-than-life characters forms the narrative of An American Hero, a parable for our times. RIYL: James Ferraro, Yves Tumor, Hype Williams, My Bloody Valentine, Leyland Kirby. Artwork and photography by Ethan Assouline; Mastered and cut by Matt Colton.

VIAN, PEDRO Beautiful Things You Left Us For Memories LP
The founder of Modern Obscure Music (MOM) presents Beautiful Things You Left Us For Memories which culminates a creative process that has led him to work over the years as one half of Aster, releasing on respected labels like John Talabot's Hivern Discs to Hieroglyphic Being's Mathematics Recordings. Pedro Vian surprises with an album that is impossible to categorize into a single musical style. BTYLUFM guides its audience through musical scenes typically attributed to the artist, with atmospheric tracks like "Pandora". But it also travels through abstract, sonic labyrinths in songs like "Maia" or "Nine Is Nine", accentuates the rhythm with techno tracks such as "Le Fou", "Invisible Objects", or "Indian Strings", and even submerges the listener into the depths of pop with "801 Nite", where Vian collaborates with the young and talented singer of Mourn, Carla Pérez Vas. This is a kaleidoscopic work, adamantly supported by artists like Gold Panda, Laurel Halo, Barnt, bRUNA, and the North American producer Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear, among others.

NEW YORK CONTEMPORARY FIVE, THE Consequences LP
Modern Silence present a reissue of The New York Contemporary Five's Consequences, originally released in 1966. The New York Contemporary Five barely lasted a year, all told, but they recorded five albums that shaped the jazz to come. They were a super-group after the fact -- the stellar frontline of Don Cherry, Archie Shepp, and John Tchicai all being relative newcomers at the time. Cherry had recently left Ornette Coleman and was only starting to stretch into world music. Shepp was fresh off a stint with Cecil Taylor and had just found his voice as a composer and performer. And Tchicai was virtually unknown. Their scorching music -- aided by the supple and hard-hitting rhythm section of Don Moore and J. C. Moses -- is a thrilling mix of adventurous soloing and post-bop structures, memorable heads and go-for-broke improv. Shepp and Tchicai offered two different ways forward for sax players: Shepp privileged texture, density, and fragmentation -- a pointillist take on Ben Webster or Coleman Hawkins, perhaps. Tchicai was a master of melodic invention, teasing out hard and bright phrases that seem unpredictably off-kilter. What's still remarkable about these tunes is their sense of internal tension. They're wound tighter than a magnet coil, without sacrificing any spontaneity. There's little that's strictly free about this jazz, but it's full of reckless and unexpected drama all the same. "Consequences" is the record's barnburner, built on fiery performances and climaxing with a Don Cherry solo that sounds like the aural equivalent of a fifty foot skid mark. Their version of Bill Dixon's "Trio" is contemplative by comparison, offering a loping groove, overlapping textures, and a series of wonderfully sustained solos that show off the stylistic strengths of each player.

VA Monika Werkstatt CD
"... Gudrun Gut has a proven track record of successfully connecting with like-minded artists on unusual paths of creativity. She's an outstanding example of someone who refuses to compromise their artistic vision. And now she is ready to present one of her most ambitious projects ever: Monika Werkstatt -- a loose collective of female artists set up to enable each of them to achieve new goals through collaboration. Monika Werkstatt will ensure that their artistic output gains visibility in an art context still too dominated by men. Monika Werkstatt has its origins in collective workshops and in shared interactions. By sharing their own challenges and achievements later on with an audience, this opened a gateway to a further feedback and creative dialogue. . . . History has a weakness for coincidences, and the release of Monika Werkstatt happily falls on the 20th anniversary of Monika Enterprises. A fantastic landmark and a means of celebrating such a tremendously talented collective that Gudrun Gut has orchestrated. So what is this release really about? Gudrun's fellow Monika members -- AGF, Beate Bartel, Lucrecia Dalt, Danielle De Picciotto, Islaja, Barbara Morgenstern, Sonae, Pilocka Krach, Natalie Beridze -- travelled from Berlin and assembled in the creative oasis of Uckermark. The goal was to create and record without any of the usual pressures and distractions that you'd anticipate in a group context. To keep the focus, Mo Loscheider cooked, Manon Pepita assisted with the day-to-day and Lupe was filming. . . . Between recording and jamming, their days were filled with music, eating, short walks in the fields and forests resounding with inspiring talks and discussions. Without any restraint or rules, they opened up new forms of interaction and creative dialogue which found themselves falling into a process without any clear beginnings or ends. . . . Once the recordings were completed, representatives of the group were delegated roles for a finished production -- some sequenced and mixed the recordings into their own tracks, while others built their own from the material recorded. The results succeed in showcasing the community as a group, as well as portraying singular pieces of art derived from a collective process."

WOLFHOUNDS, THE Untied Kingdom (... Or How To Come To Terms With Your Culture) CD
A CD issue of The Wolfhounds' modern underground classic, Untied Kingdom (... Or How To Come To Terms With Your Culture), originally released on vinyl in 2016. This consolidates a few years of intense activity which has included the singles compilation CD Middle-Aged Freaks in 2015 and the almost simultaneous reissue of their 1986 debut Unseen Ripples From A Pebble. Untied Kingdom is the band's first standalone album since Attitude (1990). It is The Wolfhounds' most far-reaching release yet, from the opening acapella iPhone-manipulated folk resurrection of "Apparition", to the apocalyptic repetition of the electric violin and detuned guitar-driven "Across The River Of Death". Incorporating sample-mangled dub, freakbeat protest punk, and late-night unplugged lo-fi along its 50-minute plus wayward journey, Untied Kingdom goes musically and lyrically everywhere other bands can't or won't go. The album summons dystopic dysfunctional hallucinations of desperate working life and insecurity, while at the same time being as raw and hardcore celebratory as danceable blues. It's as modern as any young band could hope to be, but as wise and disturbed as any alert adult has to be. It conjures up demons of the fiercest rock along with the unfettered experimentation of singer Callahan's previous band, Moonshake, plus massive riffs and neat pop hooks, to form an expansive whole with surprises around every spin of the turntable. Originally formed as teenagers in 1984, the band appeared on the legendary and influential C86 cassette (1986), and released four critically acclaimed LPs and many singles, while touring extensively before breaking up in 1990. The band reformed in 2006 to celebrate 20 years since the release of C86, and inflicted a severe guitar noise-fest on an unsuspecting indie pop crowd at London's ICA. The last LP Middle Aged Freaks and reissued debut Unseen Ripples From A Pebble both received further critical plaudits and numerous plays on BBC 6Music, and even more for the initial release of Untied Kingdom. Despite being past their 30th anniversary, Untied Kingdom now shows they can blow any act half their age offstage, while outclassing them creatively in every way. The Wolfhounds are back and better than ever. Guests include: Terry Edwards (Gallon Drunk, PJ Harvey) - saxophone, trumpet; Rhodri Marsden (Scritti Politti) - keyboards; Katherine Mountain Whitaker (Evans The Death) - vocals; Astrud Steehouder (Paper Dollhouse) - vocals; Elin Grimstad (Je Suis Animal) - vocals.

HOPPNER, NICK Work CD
Nick Höppner connects the territories of house music with the ease of alt-pop on Work, his second solo album for Ostgut Ton. After leaving his full-time job as Ostgut Ton's label manager in 2012, Nick Höppner went fully freelance, focusing on his musically diverse, deep, and dynamic DJing in and outside Berghain's Panorama Bar, but more importantly spending more time in the studio. The result was his critically acclaimed debut album Folk (OSTGUT 033CD/019LP, 2015), various 12" releases and remixes, and now his sophomore LP, Work, which, more than ever, lays out his refined production skills and his talent to work the machines until they reveal their inner ghosts: nine new songs that now dodge the dancefloor, then fully embrace it. On Work, Höppner shows his everlasting lust for musical detail, his increasing technical skills and compositional finesse. Work is a very personal, soulful, and deep record that breaks through the usual club/dancefloor narrative by documenting Nick's interest for hybrid sounds and combining elements from varying musical genres. Work's lead single "All By Themselves (My Belle)" is a very atmospheric, intimate, and steadily unfurling IDM piece with ethereal synth and vocal pads; it's contrasted by the personal "Clean Living" with Tram 78, a modern Höppner club classic: powerful, kick-heavy, muscular, cheerful, and uplifting. Connecting to this musical vibe, "In My Mind" follows with a slightly darker tone putting emphasis on bassline, percussion, and squeaky sound detailing. "Hole Head" pays tongue-in-cheek homage to Nick's love for UK club music, when a dashing melody of synths and vibraphone is matched with clattering breaks and syncopation. The dubby, mesmerizing "The Dark Segment" not only impresses with its hypnotic synth figurines, but also by morphing to a shuffling jazz rhythm towards it's middle part; "Forced Resonance" uses Oberheim synth brass stabs to dramatic effect; the percussion- and clap-laden "Fly Your Colours" comes with an irresistible piano melody atop an energetic kick; and finally the album-closing, shuffling but rhythmic, noisy yet bluesy, "Three Is A Charm", featuring the duo Randweg (Andreas Ernst and David Baurmann) on clarinet, cajón, and acoustic guitar, is a coherent departure heading towards indie pop territory. It sees Nick collaborating with acoustic instrumentalists for the first time in his ten-year-spanning Ostgut Ton release catalog. Art work by German collage artist Frank Bubenzer.

The house band of Bunny "Striker" Lee was formed in the mid-1970s by some of Jamaica's most prominent and musically expressive session players. The shifting core line-up spun off from the Soul Syndicate and thus typically featured Earl "Chinna" Smith and Tony Chin on guitar and Bernard "Touter" Harvey on organ. Carlton "Santa" was the main drummer, but Carlton Barrett of the Wailers band and "Benbow" Creary were sometimes featured. Most crucially, on bass, Aston "Family Man" Barrett shifted to Fully Fullwood (and occasionally, Earl "Bagga" Walker), until Robbie Shakespeare took over, becoming the bandleader. The band was responsible for the popular "flying cymbal" style that took Jamaica by storm, and you can hear it in abundance on this killer dub set from 1975. Its excellent cuts of Cornell Campbell and Johnnie Clarke material mixed at King Tubby's studio are a must for all serious fans of dub.

SIENKIEWICZ, JACEK 9702 CD
Recognition opens up its archives and invites you to a futuristic sentimental journey with respective stages set by the 9702. 9702 contains a set of varied tracks recorded within five years after Warsaw label's launch and its first release. Extended compositions and short improvised sound notes resemble eccentric propositions of such labels as (early) Warp or Rephlex, standing next to melancholy-saturated minimalistic techno and abstract collage structures, which prove to share many characteristics of clicks n' cuts movement of the second half of the 1990s. Usage of human voice samples is an outstanding feature of many of these archive materials. Entirety of mastered-anew, 9702 contains all principal trademarks which distinguish Jacek Sienkiewicz's creations and his label Recognition: utmost care about depth of sound sphere, experimental inclinations, and focus on complex motorik aspect of the rhythmical base. This collection of music from Recognition's first five years, surprising for its freshness and sheer impetus, is a must for all fans of Jacek Sienkiewicz and Polish electronic music of the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries.

HEY COLOSSUS The Guillotine CD
Hey Colossus's latest transmission The Guillotine marks another peak for an innovative force in the realm of heavy amplification. Darker and more brooding than their recent work, Radio Static High (LAUNCH 083CD/LP, 2015), it's also perhaps their most richly melodic to date. The interplay of their three guitar lineup has never sounded more fluent than on these eight songs, nor their song-craft more well-defined. The Guillotine is a record whose alchemical charge arrives from a reinvention of loud rock shapes into forms both feral and fresh. Whilst Hey Colossus can still bludgeon with over-amped vigor, as on the hypnotic and devastating krautrock-Jesus Lizard hybrid of "Back In The Room", they can also deliver the haunting waltz-time serenade of "Calenture Boy" with uncompromising fortitude, with the new-found confidence and allure of Paul Sykes's vocals at the forefront. These menacing and immersive songs chronicle a band exploring a unique sound and invigorating approach in a decade in which cliches and genre pieces in the realm of the psychedelic have frequently surrounded. Here the six-piece find themselves transcending the limitations of the underground scene from whence they came, whilst exposing the paucity of inspiration in much of the guitar-rock mainstream.

SCHAEFER, JANEK Glitter In My Tears CD
Glitter In My Tears marks the 20th anniversary of Janek Schaefer's career as a recording artist, having now released 30 albums. His music is best comprehended through examining his time as an architect, and how that forged his innate sense for constructing tactile atmospheres, that navigate through unknown structures and forgotten spaces, creating profound new places. Over his career he has placed focus on the relationship between body, medium, and sound, creating a field of work that defies easy definition -- an architect of found soundscapes. For Schaefer, the medium plays as great a role as the message itself. He creates music that exposes the marks and memories of a variety of media, as presented in the 26 tracks on Glitter In My Tears, an eclectic album that celebrates the sense of overwhelming desolation held in the music -- a subdued cathartic opus. Each piece is a microcosm of haunted memory that unites to create a record of melancholic vignettes, and is easily his most critical recorded work to date. It's a record that reflects Schaefer's obsession with texture, atmosphere, and emotive acoustic states. Multiple interludes, like active memories, lace into one another. Their relation is temporal, and shaped very much by the settings in which they are encountered. Like the very best ambient music, Glitter In My Tears is an acoustic reflector of sorts, rebounding off the places and spaces within which it is experienced. This process means the record is never static, but in a constant state of discovery and rediscovery. Schaefer comments, "The album was composed over the last decade, in moments when most people are asleep in the dark, while the lucky ones are still dancing in the lights. It's a record of delightful dark emotions evolving from the evocative dreams we yearn for, with our feet firmly on the floor, always wanting more. An unfolding compendium of motifs and repetitive fragments, fading from the memories of our emotions. Sparkling lights glisten in the hidden shadows of our feelings, with outpourings of love falling through the depths of despair. It is based on a true story."

"Bananenräuber" -- the funky drama of a thief who steals fruit and brings them back to the store. Kalabrese found this lovely story in a black and white Swiss movie Hinter Den Sieben Gleisen (1959). Asked to comment on his new album, and its title, here's what he has to say: "To express something on your own can be quite challenging at times. I have, for years, been in creative collaborations with musicians and producers that have encouraged and inspired me. Music that has a connection to 'Places of Worship', but this time recorded 'live' in the studio in a chamber music like approach inspired by contemporary elements from composers like Toru Takemitsu and Manuel de Falla, to traditional organ music, and at the end of the album bringing in a traditional 'kven' (ancient Nordic song tradition) theme from the roots of my family from the North of Norway, sung by Anna Maria Friman of Trio Mediaeval."

Sanfuentes Records has been offering different overviews of Latin América. Visiones EP, Sanfuentes's new EP, reflects on the continuously ongoing cultural cross-pollination happening in Latin América, a phenomena that brings unity and topples political, social, and spiritual borders. Through three original tracks, Sanfuentes shows a very integrating vision, one that seems particularly necessary for the current times. Expanded with the remix by the North American producer LA-4A -- the more acid/techno oriented alias of Ambivalent -- to the track "Derecho Contra El Muro" ("full on against the wall"), arguably the most political track in the lot.

"Plus Two" sees rolling low-end and trippy, churning synths give way to a barrage of energetic claps and racing ride cymbals. BEGG, SI Blueprints CD
Pioneering music producer Si Begg presents his sixth studio album Blueprints on Berlin's legendary label Shitkatapult. His first album in four years, Blueprints is a celebration of raw electronics welded to the "romance of engineering". The project was inspired by the discovery of an old diagrammatic notebook that belonged to Begg's grandfather, George, in his lifetime a cutting-edge engineer. Dubbed "visionary" by The Who's Pete Townshend and widely considered a producer's producer, Begg has been making genre-defying electronic music for more than two decades. He has carved a reputation as a recording artist, DJ, and sound designer, and in more recent years, as an award-winning composer for television and film. Blueprints sees Begg's passion for contemporary score collide with his love of electronic music. Since the release of his last album, 2013's Permission To Explode, Begg has written scores for four feature films as well as for the Netflix original series, Lovesick, and a battle rap documentary, War of Words (2016). The concept for the album sprang fully formed when Begg came across the notebook, a beautifully preserved leather-bound volume, annotated in his grandfather's precise hand. The book was filled with meticulous diagrams of compressors and parallel air ducts, graphs recording comparative noise levels at different factories, statistical information detailing the thermal efficiency of power stations, alongside blueprints for futuristic machines yet to be built. At the same time, Begg was reconnecting with his own back-to-basics studio machinery, the voltage-powered hardware instead of slick high-end software. The parallel discoveries felt like synchronicity and Begg began producing tracks using analog synthesizers recorded live in one take, augmented by circuit bending effects units and the electro-magnetic field noise created by mobile phones and hard drives. Begg decided to champion these idiosyncratic machines, putting them center stage with the aim to demonstrate that not only were these unique tools to create art, they were simultaneously works of art in their own right. The pieces on Blueprints evoke the beauty and romance of great engineering, often overlooked in a landscape of post-industrial gloom. From the hums and sparking pops of "Heat Resistant Alloys" to the relentless subsonic sine waves underpinning "Resistance Is Expensive", raw electrical signals pulse through the heart of the music. This is a work of complex, evolving mathematical patterns, circuitry bent out of shape. It is a hymn to the voltage-controlled oscillator.

PIO, GIUSTO Motore Immobile LP
Limited repress. Soave present the first vinyl reissue of Giusto Pio's Motore Immobile, originally released in 1979. One of the most striking documents of Italy's minimalist movement, Giusto Pio's Motore Immobile is a masterwork with few equivalents. Produced by Franco Battiato in 1979, at the outset of a long and fruitful period of collaboration between the two composers, and issued by the legendary Cramps Records, its triumphs were met by silence, before falling from view. Emerging on vinyl for the first time since its original pressing, Motore Immobile now sits within a reappraisal of a large neglected body of efforts made by the Italian avant-garde during the second half of the 1970s and early '80s. It is singular, but not alone. It resonates within a collective world of shimmering sound, one familiar to fans of Battiato, Lino Capra Vaccina, Luciano Cilio, Roberto Cacciapaglia, Francesco Messina, and Raul Lovisoni. An exercise in elegant restraint - note and resonance held to the most implicit need. Everything between root and embellishment has been stripped away. A sublime organ drone, against interventions of deceptively simple structural complexity - executed by piano, violin, and voice. A sonic sculpture reaching heights which few have touched. A thing of beauty and an album as perfect as they come. The reemergence of Motore Immobile heralds what is unquestionably one of the most important reissues of 2017.

RODEN, STEVE A Thousand Breathing Forms 6CD BOX/3" CD
A Thousand Breathing Forms, the second boxset of Steve Roden archive works released by Sonoris, is a selection of unreleased or hard-to-locate works from 2003 to 2008, a very prolific and creative period for the Californian artist. The boxset is centered on his hard-to-describe loop based sound works that are uniquely his own, such as Stars Of Ice (2008), A Christmas Play For Joseph Cornell (2007), but also includes the conceptual "One Hour As The Bumps Of Surfaces" and some more musical or instrumental works. So Delicate And Strangely Made, the title of one of his very first records (2003), could still be the right description of his sound work, rooted in visual arts and architecture, mixing conceptual rigor, and experimentation, without neglecting musicality. Most of Roden's sound works tend towards using a singular source -- such as objects, architectural spaces, field recordings, or texts. Mastered by Giuseppe Ielasi; Edition of 500.Steve Roden on the collection: "Stars Of Ice was inspired by a Chinese 7" record salvaged from a thrift store. 'Stills For Guru Dutt' came out of my love of discovering my favorite Bollywood director, and the En/Of (2004) record used the sound of the great Indian playback singer Mohammed Rafi. '22 Letters And The Resonance Of A Three Pointed Star' was inspired by an early 1960's building for the Olivetti design firm in Ivrea Italy, where the original installation was placed within the lobby where it was 'modulated' by the space. A Christmas Play For Joseph Cornell was of course, inspired by the work of Joseph Cornell, but also George Brecht's water yam scores. The banjo used in 'Banjoharmonium' was found at the flea market (my home from home), and the harmonium was a gift from my friend Damon. . . . 'To These 4 Horizons' was, again with collaborating with architecture, making recordings in the rain on the site of Le Corbusier's Ronchamp after getting lost for hours while trying to find our way through torrential rains (that you can hear on one of these tracks). 'Sleep/Walk/Drive' was a collaboration, also something important to keep one honest. The last track, so tiny, was a cover version of the oldest recorded sound we know, and the story of that not only generated this track, but a sound and video installation."

AUTOMATIC CITY Bongoes & Tremoloes CD
After their first raw blues album One Batch Of Blues (STAGO 090CD/LP, 2016), Automatic City are making a bold step towards some bongo percussion, voodoo, and Caribbean rhythms, space-echoed jumpin' blues, tremolo, and slide guitar vibrations, while still keeping the sound rough and gritty. That is one of the ingredients of their trademark, as is the use of instruments more unusual to the blues music genre, like sanza, miscellaneous percussions, and some primitive electronic instruments like stylophone, theremin, or the rhythm ace drum machine. Captured live in a session that lasted only a couple of days, the same quartet led by Eric Duperray on vocals, Emmanuel Mercier on guitars and production, with Raphael Vallade on double bass and Zaza Desiderio on percussions, is creating it's very own versions of gems from the songbooks of Willie Dixon, Billy Boy Arnold, Billy Emerson, plus "Havana Moon" by Chuck Berry and a hypnotic version of R.L. Burnside's "Goin' Down South". Last but not least, a cover of "Crawfish", which was Joe Strummer's favorite Elvis song from the Kid Creole movie (1958). For the first time, Bongoes & Tremoloes also features some original material like "Resolution Blues", a one-man foot-stomping soulful blues recalling the style of some John Lee Hooker recordings. Or "Evil Eyes On Me", partly inspired by Fred McDowell's slide guitar works, as well as original instrumentals that create a unique sound and feel. As initially said, this is a bold step forward in the career of this unique blues outfit.

BAMBOO The Dragon Flies Away CD
Bamboo, the ongoing project from Nick Carlisle (Peepholes, Don't Argue) and Rachel Horwood (Trash Kit, Halo Halo) present their second studio album, The Dragon Flies Away. Far from being a side-project, Bamboo is very much a fully realized pursuit, with the band working on multiple records simultaneously from their Brighton and London base camps. Initially released on Crumb Cabin in a limited run of 50 cassettes in the winter 2016, with an accompanying zine designed by Horwood, The Dragon Flies Away tells a story loosely associated with the Hannya demon mask of Noh theatre plays such as Dojoji, and reflects the range of emotion the Hannya mask is capable of displaying: obsession, jealousy, sorrow, and rage. The Dragon Flies Away presents its story in two acts. Vivid and deeply poignant, Bamboo's music locks into a magnetic attraction between Horwood's flawlessly resonant folk cadence and Carlisle's pristine synth production. "Hannya" opens the album in a reflective mood with Rachel's mournful vocal and echoing banjo that gets swept up by flourishes of percussion and synth-flute vistas. "Always Running" follows, living up to its name with its propulsive beat and plucked rhythm, building to a chase for Rachel's dramatic vocal turn. "Like A Sparrow" is a beautifully realized track sounding as vulnerable and vociferous as a Kate Bush song. "Wake Up Your Heart" delights in pools of pitch-shifted melody and primal vision. Whilst the final two tracks on the album embrace Carlisle's cascading synth lines as pure as ice flows, augmented gong passages and fragile yet impassioned vocalizations. Overall the album feels film-like, with an ability to hold the listeners hand and lead them through another world. It's ambitious and heavy on concept without ever becoming overwrought, preserving its delicate personal tone and lush, spacious sound throughout. During the writing and subsequent release of their debut album, Prince Pansori Priestess, (UTR 075CD/LP, 2015), The Dragon Flies Away was recorded between Spring 2015 and Summer 2016. CD version comes in an edition of 300.

ASHBRINGER Yugen 2LP
Y?gen outshines its predecessor Vacant (2016) in every aspect, and rightfully so. A gorgeous expedition through luscious soundscapes aided by an oriental tint, Ashbringer present one of the most invigorating, raw, and enjoyable adventures black metal has seen in a while. A stunning palette of colliding synths and cavernous leads are a wonderfully enticing introduction to Y?gen's expedition. The density of the synth work transitions beautifully into continuous force, as the band blast and shred their way into the spotlight. The bridge between dynamics, and the melodic measures taken to pair riffs together are implemented flawlessly; a direct, technical edification from Vacant which suffered from occasionally poor cohesion decisions. A serene acoustic interlude, a passionate solo, and the song marches out, confident that it opened Y?gen well -- "Solace" stands as a perfect representation of this album's greatest strength; beautifully paced, dynamic songwriting. As the expedition ventures forth into "Oceans Apart", and "Lakeside Meditation", individualism and consistent theme work hand-in-hand to paint vivid, honest images of the changing world of Y?gen. There is no star track on Y?gen, and with very good reason. Ashbringer have grabbed diversity by the reigns, exploring every nook and cranny of atmospheric black metal's melodic side, and returning only with choice picks. The title track's swirling entrance and firestorm crescendo will leave you with the same, awestruck buzz as the proceeding interlude that falls under three minutes.

BENALI & MAAK, GHALIA MwSOUL CD
It was during the revolution that people from all over the Middle East felt connected on a spiritual level no matter which country they came from. Tunisian-born and Brussels-based, Ghalia Benali, felt an otherworldly homogeneity with freedom seekers miles away and it felt as if she was destined for her new career venture. MwSOUL, which translates to "connected", was Benali's next music project. It is considered her most Sufi and spiritually oriented work. Most of the lyrics were written by her, yet the "MwSOUL" hit was written by the aspiring Egyptian poet, Abdallah Ghoneim. It all started during the revolution when Egypt shut down the internet and Benali lost connection with the youth. Ghoneim sent her a poem about souls and hearts intertwining, regardless of their inability to physically meet. It was about the silent yet ever present connection between two beings, the past and future and life and death. The songstress tried to understand her own emotions regarding deaths, crimes, and conspiracies and seek the true essence of the events. To her, freedom was never about over throwing political figures. Going through a personal revolution in her own personal life, Benali immediately started recording the powerful poem tackling the individual's path towards liberty. MwSOUL is a project that blends classic and contemporary Arab lyrics. The music using breath (brass) and beat (percussion) was written by Benali, referring to the soul and heart, and arranged by Belgian group, Mâäk, with whom Benali has been collaborating for over 20 years, and led by trumpeter Laurnet Bondiau with the excellent oud of Moufadhel Adhoum. Benali graces the stage in the MwSOUL performance and creates a pulse that is organically provided by oud, flute, trumpet, sax, sousaphone, and drums, along with her dark and commanding voice and horns that add punchy rhythmic riffs. From moments of calm voice tagged solely with oud or sousaphone to full-throated vocal notes, the performance is a roller coaster of beats and emotions. Comes in a digipack; Includes booklet.

FINAL CUT Deep into the Cut 2LP
New lower pricing. First complete vinyl release of the 1989 debut album by Detroit industrial techno group Final Cut, produced by Jeff Mills and Anthony Srock. Recorded prior to Mills's departure from the project, Deep into the Cut marks a significant moment in the convergence of the classic industrial aesthetic and the emerging sound of Detroit techno. This reissue serves as a window into this unique moment, evoking both the transgressive spirit of European industrial music and the raw militant power of early Underground Resistance. The album declaims a message of sonic urgency across its 11 tracks, and still stands as a landmark statement of the industrial techno sound. Remastered in Berlin by Rashad Becker, this edition presents the full album as a double vinyl release for the first time.

VA We Play House Recordings 10 Years 3CD
We Play House Recordings is the brainchild and musical playground of veteran Belgian DJ and producer Red D. This man has been DJ'ing for as long as he himself can remember (it's actually 27 years) and has built up a cult-following in Belgium and beyond. We Play House Recordings has always aimed to be more than "just" a music label and over the years it has turned into a brand of trust for (house) music lovers. With label stages and parties at Tomorrowland, Ampere, Panorama Bar, and many more, and with a community of dedicated followers, We Play House Recordings aims to be a brand of trust and a household name in the Belgian and international music scene. That is why We Play House Recordings is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a first ever label compilation with this triple CD release. Over the years artists like Locked Groove, FCL, San Soda, Art Of Tones, Luv Jam, Kiani & His Legion, Russ Gabriel, and countless others, have found a home on We Play House Recordings, a home where they have the freedom to release house music that does not follow trends or hypes. Both as a DJ and as a label A&R, Red D simply believes that if he likes it and it sounds special, it deserves to be heard. That is also why We Play House Recordings gives chances to so many young (Belgian) producers. We Play House Recordings 10 Years is more than just a retrospective. J DILLA The King Of Beats II LP
Repressed. "Jay Dee a.k.a. J Dilla is widely regarded as one of the greatest producers in hip hop history. The E-Mu Systems SP-1200 drum machine and sampler was the first electronic instrument Jay Dee worked with while crafting the incomparable styles and sounds which defined the early stages of his legendary production. The SP-1200 was his primary tool of choice at the inception of his career. During this period, he created classics for early Slum Village, The Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, among many others. After careful study and curation this one of a kind collection compiles the well-deserved documentation of Jay Dee's early musical masterpieces. Ma Dukes assembled a team of industry family who spent nine months working daily to bring this project to J Dilla fans everywhere. The King Of Beats feature's 40 tracks from Jay Dee's groundbreaking 'Batches' created using his SP-1200. In addition the CD release contains 'The Lost Scrolls' and an additional 15 cuts created by Dilla on his MPC which was recently donated to the Smithsonian for their National Museum of African American History and Culture scheduled to open to the public in 2016. The King Of Beats is more than a collection of Dilla's unheard works, it's a glimpse inside the mind of a creative genius, a view into Dilla's artistic process and a must have for any who call themselves a fan of his musical legacy."

J DILLA Jay Dee's Ma Dukes Collection LP
"Since his untimely death at the all too young age of 32 the world has grown to appreciate the work of J Dilla even more than when he was alive. There's an ethereal quality to Jay Dee's works, part boom bap but more mellow. Mellow, but never soft. And Dilla never stopped making beats, his MPC was by his side until the very end. It now resides in the Smithsonian. Due the prolific nature of his beat making, the world is blessed to have stacks of Dilla material -- some coming to light even this many years after his passing. In the world of hip hop, no one's mother is more famous that Ma Dukes. Go ahead, name check Chuck D's mom or Chance the Rapper's mom or TI's mother -- without hitting Google. And one of the reasons we all know Ma Dukes is her tireless effort to maintain Dilla's legacy. This release is yet another step in that direction. Presented here, from the Official Ma Dukes Collection, are 15 works by Jay Dee from deep in the vaults, being released on vinyl for the first time."
