WARE TRIO, DAVID S. Live in New York, 2010 2CD
"Live in New York, 2010 presents a tremendous one-night engagement by saxophone colossus David S. Ware and his latter day Trio in an intimate club setting -- the Blue Note on October 4, 2010. Featuring his perennially steadfast musical partner William Parker on bass, and equally incomparable Warren Smith on drums, they were celebrating the recent release of the studio album, Onecept (2010). Having played an electrifying set at Vision Festival in June, this extended night in October was the third and final magnificent time on which this trio convened. Appearances at jazz clubs in New York were rare for Ware. The two hour+ sets, with repast in-between, allowed him and group to inhabit the space; afforded more time to stretch out and breathe with the music. As Ware was exclusively dealing with spontaneous forms during this period in his creative life, the six extended suites here were newly created on that night. None of these fantastic multi-track recordings have been previously released. The other highly distinctive aspect of this performance was Ware's use of his Beuscher straight alto saxophone, or stritch, which features on four of the six pieces. While pieces featuring this instrument appear on three albums recorded & released in the last years before his passing, this recording is by a great measure the most extensive documentation that exists of David S. Ware on alto! Further to his absolute command & control, he brought forth Middle & Far Eastern sonorities on the instrument, which served his modus operandi of music as a transcendental experience very well indeed. The final pieces of each set here feature him on his trademark tenor sax, upon which he earned -- and then some -- his status as a saxophone colossus. Packaged in deluxe 8-panel digipak, with liner notes by Ware's longtime producer Steven Joerg, and appropriately vivid imagery."

PARKER QUARTETS, WILLIAM Meditation / Resurrection 2CD
"Meditation / Resurrection is a double-album presenting a bounty of beautiful new William Parker compositions performed by two of his flagship ensembles, the Quartet -&- In Order To Survive. It was recorded & mixed live during a one-day studio session in late 2016. With the tone of the pieces & performances reflecting our current moment, this is Parker & the groups' follow-up to 2013's epic Wood Flute Songs box (2013). At the core of both groups is Parker's foundational bass together with rhythm twin, drummer Hamid Drake. Their partnership -- two decades deep now -- is one of the greatest in the history of drums & bass. Alto saxophonist Rob Brown -- a supremely gifted improviser, as is every musician here -- is likewise present throughout. Pianist Cooper-Moore features on album/CD2. He has been a very significant catalyst in the world of creative music for over 40 years. As William writes in the notes, 'Cooper-Moore is one of the special people who speaks and plays from the heart all the time with power and grace. If my music has had any success in last 20 years it is because he has been a major inspiration and contributor.' Cooper-Moore will be the Lifetime Achievement Honoree at the 2017 edition of the Vision Festival, NYC. Trumpeter Jalalu-Kalvert Nelson appears on album/CD1. Hailing from Oklahoma City, and a resident of Switzerland since 1994, he is a major figure in his own right as a composer of modern classical and world music, and is well-versed in the language of blues, jazz and improvisation. From the liner notes, 'Jalalu is always able to transform any music situation into a magical experience.' William Parker's exceptional gift as a composer of beautiful melodies and infectious rhythms have long been intrinsic to his art, and it has always been on full display in the work of the quartets featured here. Being that these groups are among the highest caliber jazz bands of our time, Parker's luminous compositions are brought to blossom into vibrant kaleidoscopes of sound. Packaged in deluxe 8-panel digipak with extensive notes by William Parker on the music and more."

HAWKES, MARQUIS The Basement Is Burning 12"
Marquis Hawkes makes his return to Aus Music in the form of a blazing, floor-focused two-track EP. The Basement Is Burning takes its name from a near-fateful experience stemming from an electrical fire in Hawkes's home which culminated in him and his family being evacuated from a fifth floor balcony. The title track kicks off with splashy, live drum samples that are armored with electronic layers before a feel-good piano lick glides into the mix. "Tower Block Boogie" then tumbles short funk samples through bold drums as a fervid sense of tension burns throughout.

IDLES Brutalism CD
Bristol's finest post-punk polemics Idles have been promising to do great things for some time now, and with their debut album Brutalism, they absolutely fulfill that promise, a furious promise at that. Politically charged, refreshingly confrontational, and infectiously volatile, Idles are a band like no other. Bringing the unsettling reality of the world we live in into their frantic assault on the senses, they are a band that until now could only be truly understood by witnessing in a live environment. But with Brutalism, it surely feels like they have captured the intensity of that live sound. Bottled up here are the abrasive, memorable lyrics of Joseph Talbot delivered with all of the spite and wry humor he puts across on the stage. Dedicated in part to the loss of his mother, who adorns the record's cover, and partly to a perceived decimation of society, from the NHS to public services across Britain, Brutalism is a deadly serious indictment on popular culture.

CAMILLE Le Fil CD
Camille's second studio album Le Fil, originally released in 2004. Le Fil features a "tone", a low-level drone that is in the background of every song, which Camille has described as "her note". The note is a B. The singer also mentioned that many people returned the record, thinking this sound was a fault with the recording. The title also arises due to the similar word "fille", or "girl", which arises in a lot of the songs. Includes "La Jeune Fille Aux Cheveux Blancs" and "Ta Douleur". CD version comes in a jewel box with a 12-page booklet.

FIELDS & THE EXPRESSIONS, LEE Lover Man/Never Be Another You 7"
"Big Crown Records is proud to present another killer two sider pulled from Lee Fields & The Expressions instant classic 'Special Night'. With Lee touring the world from sold out show to sold out show supporting his album, we give the DJs and collectors another must have 45. The A side 'Lover Man' is equal parts rough and smooth. The production and the band come off with a thunderous backing track that takes it's time to get to full sail while Lee lays down some tell it like it is lyrics. Fields comes to the microphone with the confidence only a man with his track record could putting down what life is like with him if the woman he is after just let's it be that way. The B side 'Never Be Another You' finds Lee & The Expressions taking another turn on the formula their success has been built on. An unorthodox track to find on a soul album made to fit perfectly, once again pushing the aesthetics of analog soul further into the present. Lee confesses his love and appreciation for his woman walking the fine line of vulnerability and strength."

CLUSTER Grosses Wasser LP
2017 repress; LP version. Formed in Germany in 1971 when Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius left Conrad Schnitzler's group Kluster, Cluster can be counted among the most important protagonists of the electronic avant-garde. Some credit them with having invented ambient music, others as pioneers of synthesizer pop, while to others they are firmly embedded in the Krautrock universe. There is some truth in all of these notions. Although Cluster and "rock music" are seldom mentioned in the same breath, their early works in particular are marked by a lack of structure and futuristic, cold soundscapes typical of the Krautrock variation known as "kosmische." Recorded and released in 1979, Grosses Wasser was Cluster's fifth album as a duo. The cover art is the first indication of minimalist tendencies, reflecting the concentration, transparency and maturity of the content, almost like chamber music. While nothing is left to chance, each of the six Cluster pieces effervesces with a certain joie de vivre, providing ample scope for artistic spontaneity. Grosses Wasser was recorded at Paragon Studio, which had been set up by Peter Baumann (Tangerine Dream) not long before. Baumann had set aside plenty of time for the recording sessions, enabling Cluster to experiment with sequencers for the first time and explore some of the most up-to-date (for that period) studio gadgets on offer. Moebius and Roedelius made intelligent, measured use of the latest paraphernalia without being overwhelmed by it. New technology was deployed with an exactness designed to refine their sophisticated and fully-developed musical ideas. More than ever before in Cluster's history, acoustic elements can be heard, with the dulcet tones of Paragon's Steinway grand piano taking center stage. Electric bass, guitar, percussion and voice are all embraced. Consequently, Grosses Wasser is anything but a solely electronic album. It is, however, one of those rare LPs whose musical substance transcends its age, never sounding outdated. Grosses Wasser is the first in a series of 23 albums to be reissued by Bureau B, comprehensively documenting the superb electronic/ambient/Krautrock history of the Hamburg label, Sky Records, from whom the material has been licensed. Cluster (in their various guises) will feature heavily in the series (solo albums as well as collaborations with Brian Eno, Conny Plank, Gerd Beerbohm, Mani Neumeier, etc.). Printed inner sleeve includes liner notes by Asmus Tietchens.

DER PLAN Unkapitulierbar LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD. Moritz R®, Kurt Dahlke aka Pyrolator, and Frank Fenstermacher have met in the studio after 25 years and recorded a new album. One can claim that Der Plan was one of the most powerful German bands during the time of musical departure at the beginning of the 1980s. Der Plan was always more than a band: a kind of three-headed Renaissance man, for whom visual art was just as important as music. The Ata Tak label, founded by the three members, was one of the first continental European indie labels and released albums by DAF, Andreas Dorau, Holger Hiller, and Element Of Crime. Reichelt designed covers for Depeche Mode and decisively initiated the tiki/lounge revival at the beginning of the 1990s. Fenstermacher played on the legendary Monarchie Und Alltag by Fehlfarben (1980) and released a number of solo albums. Kurt Dahlke has remained active as a producer and programmer, most recently for Edgar Froese. Der Plan was not merely a cerebral band concept, but they were pop in the best sense: playful, fearless, and curious, they always wanted to "work with the current state of technology and express ourselves," says Dahlke. And if the current state of technology wasn't sufficient, they simply plugged in the soldering iron. The Geri Reig principle, conceived by Der Plan (BB 104CD/LP), was an invented term that anticipated the idea of the "Geniale Dillettanten". The title of the album translates to "Uncapitulable!" and signalizes both continuity and unbrokenness. That's hardly a given when three musicians have gone their own separate ways for a quarter of a century. As is often the case, an external occasion provided the spark for the idea of a comeback: as the birthday band at Andreas Dorau's 50th. So the band collected sketches, fragments, and ideas that had accumulated over the years and produced Unkapitulierbar in three weeks at Pyrolator's Ata Tak Studio Berlin. "This time the music was created on the basis of ideas and lyrics. Earlier, we often played improvised sessions and later added lyrics to it. One could say that in the meantime we have become something like songwriters," explains Reichelt. And "Der Plan 2017 is no longer so angular and swings better." But the music still sounds psychedelic: mild and sunny, as in "Es Heisst Die Sonne", "Come Fly With Me", or "Was Kostet Der Austritt", or dark and eerie on "Ich Kann Die Stille Hören" and "Gesicht Ohne Buch". There is a kind of electronic shanty -- "Wie Der Wind Weht" -- and a pop song with "Lass Die Katze Stehn". On "Man Leidet Herrlich" -- and not for the first time -- reggae and dub references are apparent. Unkapitulierbar is a melodic, electronic, brightly colored kaleidoscope of an album.

VA Cocoon Compilation Q CD
Cocoon Recordings presents Q, the new edition of one of the longest running techno compilation series worldwide. With a broad bandwidth ranging from "futuristic-deconstructive" compositions such as "Da Dang" by Alex & Digby and "Fragile" by Carlos Nilmmns and featuring Genoveva, the many contributions to Q fancy almost anachronistic acid and trance influences. The vocal parts and the arrangement of "All I Can (About You)" by Baba Stiltz appear like electronic singer songwriting, slightly similar to Pepe Bradock productions and their Dada aesthetic. In contrast to this, "Anno Domini" by Kamran Sadeghi follows the sound approach of early Maurizio/Basic Channel records and reminds the listener that modern techno does not always have to be impulsive and kicking. Harmonies and melodies of all kinds, and the almost dreamy and playful sound arrangements are something like the common element on Q. For example, "Ode To Be" by Sebastian Mullaert works like a decent sunriser that marks the end of a long night. Harald Björk takes it a few steps further in the harmony corner. His song "Spring" is on the edge to an ambient/chill-out song and unfolds a great hypnotic effect. "Tom's Heimweh" by Acid Pauli and the demanding "Sequence In D" by Fort Romeau follow into a similar direction, however both pieces are built on slightly more solid beats despite their melodic basic mood. Metallically cool, but equally sexy and bass-heavy at the same time, US legend John Tejada's "Blitzar" throws crazy designed sounds at the listener. "Pulse Train" by Söllscher & Siech, on the other hand, follows a more traditional techno approach with a strong beat and bass foundation and cool, building acid lines. The "vapor-spacey" string sounds, reminiscent of Detroit techno, complete the tracks. Johannes Volk's "Luminance" is a bit more consistent in an almost old-school acid manner and appears to be something like the most clubby track of the album. "If I'd Care More" by Rico Puestel is something like the "all-embracing track" on Q; Puestel unites in his contribution the different approaches and lines of the other pieces and delivers the secret title track of the compilation. Dry and kicking beats, dreamy melody parts, but also hypnotic basslines and lots of crazy sounds in the arrangement. Exactly like the overall vibe of Q this one is not "futuristic" or "old school", it is simply timeless.

"Water Bomb" is finally available after many requests following its appearance on Mumdance's acclaimed FabricLive mix (FABRIC 160CD, 2015). Descriptively titled, the track leads with metallic pads and squealing electronics as a distorted bass drum builds to the break. "Cold New Worlds" takes on a more hypnotic stance, entrancing and unusual from start to finish. Brooding pads and dynamic atmospherics hold together the robotic, fidgety percussive maneuvers that rolls ever forward, constantly on the brink of collapse.

MOORE, RUDY RAY The Sensuous Black Man CD
"In the early 1970's, Rudy Ray Moore was pushing out 'raw' comedy albums just as quick as the public would buy them. Thanks to the sexual revolution started in the 1960's, the public was becoming less ashamed and more interested in their own sexuality. Masters and Johnson had concluded extensive research into the sexuality field and delivered groundbreaking books on the subject. If those seemed heavy handed for the average person, 1969's The Sensuous Woman (written by 'J') and 1971's The Sensuous Man (written by 'M') were more palatable for readers and became massive paperback sellers. A companion album to The Sensuous Woman was also released as 'J' described how and what turns her on. Then along comes 'The Prince' (aka Rudy Ray Moore) who pulls no punches and wants to tell the Brothers out there just where it's at. 'The Prince' throws aside the 'high class and falootin' gynecological terms and tells it like it is. The first half of the album features Moore describing and instructing various sexual techniques and practices in such great detail the devil would blush! For its second half, Moore answers questions from his 'audience' and cracks some nasty jokes. I dare you to try to master all the techniques on this album and remember to shake your ass and stroke!"

ASHBY, DOROTHY Hip Harp / On A Minor Groove 2LP
Doxy present a combined reissue of legendary jazz harpist and poly-instrumentalist Dorothy Ashby's Hip Harp and In A Minor Groove, both released separately in 1958. Both albums feature Frank Wess. Dorothy Ashby had a unique soul jazz harp sound, and although the instrument she used is probably more thought of in terms of bedtime lullabies, she actually makes it swing nicely, and with a soulful sound that draws back to traditions of African stringed instruments. Ashby was part of the same scene as Yusef Lateef, and like Lateef, she managed to use odd instrumentation in new contexts, to get a very unique jazz sound. 140 gram clear vinyl; First pressing comes in an edition of 500 (numbered). From the original liner notes for Hip Harp: "In Hip Harp in addition to the interpretations of standards like 'Moonlight In Vermont', 'Dancing In The Dark', 'Charmaine' and 'There's A Small Hotel', Dorothy and Frank work out on three Ashby tunes: 'Pawky', a minor-key blues, 'Back Talk', major-key blues and 'Jollity', a medium-up original. Dorothy Ashby has added to the basic territory that the harp previously occupied. In fusing her sometimes guitar-like, swinging line to the expected harp effects, she has added another step to the instrument-scope of jazz (...)"

BOWLES, PAUL Music of Morocco: Recorded by Paul Bowles, 1959 4CD BOX/BOOK
2017 repress! Silkscreened cigar box with foil stamping details throughout, 120-page leatherette book, and four CDs containing 4 hours and 30 minutes of audio. Includes introduction by Lee Ranaldo, field notes by Paul Bowles, and annotations by Philip Schuyler. From July to December 1959, Paul Bowles crisscrossed Morocco making recordings of traditional music under the auspices of the Library of Congress. Although the trip occupied less than six months in a long and busy career, it was the culmination of Bowles's longstanding interest in North African music. The resulting collection remained a musical touchstone for the rest of his life and an important part of his mythology. Paul Bowles (1910-1999) was an American expatriate composer and author. He became associated with Tangier, Morocco, where he settled in 1947 and lived for 52 years to the end of his life. While living in Morocco, Bowles became a magnet for those envisioning the artist's life away from the mainstream. He was idolized by writers of the Beat Generation, many of whom (William Burroughs, Gregory Corso, Allen Ginsberg, and Jack Kerouac) visited Bowles and his wife Jane in Tangier -- a city Burroughs would later reimagine as the "Interzone" in his 1959 novel Naked Lunch. Over four months in 1959, Bowles traveled an estimated 25,000 miles around Morocco, capturing vocal and instrumental (including dance) music of various tribes and other indigenous populations at 23 locations throughout the country. In 1972, the Library of Congress issued a double LP titled Music of Morocco, containing selections from the collection. This four-CD set contains the recordings included on that double LP in addition to a wealth of never-before-heard music from this rich collection. Includes performances by Maallem Ahmed, Rais Ahmed ben Bakrim, Moqaddem Mohammed ben Salem, Chikh Ayyad ou Haddou, Rais Mahamad ben Mohammed, Chikh Hamed bel Hadj Hamadi ben Allal, Maallem Ahmed Gacha, Chikha Fatoma bent Kaddour, Cheikha Haddouj bent Fatma Rohou, Mohammed bel Hassan El Ferqa dial Guedra (Bechara), Maalem Abdeslam Sarsi el Mahet, Sadiq ben Mohammed Laghzaoui Morsan Embarek ben Mohammed, Maalem Mohammed Rhiata, Si Mohammed Bel Hassan Soudani, Maallem Taieb ben Mbarek, Hazan Isaac Ouanounou, members of the Hevrat Gezekel, Hazan Semtob Knafo, Amram Castiel, Hevrat David Hamelekh, Maalem el Hocein, Abdelkrim Rais, and members of the Family of the Chorfa of Ouezzane, as well as recordings of unknown performers.

VA Midnite Spares LP
Repressed. The Efficient Space label follows its acclaimed 2016 Sky Girl compilation (EFFICIENT 002CD/LP) with Midnite Spares. Here, Australian music devotees András Fox and Instant Peterson hold a candle to overlooked avant-pop and electronic works by antipodean artists and outsiders working through the '80s and '90s. Through co-presenting their weekly radio show "Strange Holiday", the duo slowly upturned their locale for inspiration - archives, country bookstores, private collections and convenience stores - searching for a place to anchor their own identities in the oceans of the island continent. The ten tracks here acknowledge a minor history, passed on via a network of friends, friends of friends, the libraries of radio station 3RRR and more often than not, the artists themselves. Renowned mixed media artist Maria Kozic enters with the mysterious downbeat of "Trust Me", her partner Philip Brophy responsible for digital and analog sonic construction (as the MK Sound). A recurring character in András and Instant Peterson's investigations, Brophy reappears with a score piece from his divisive feature film Salt, Saliva, Sperm and Sweat (1988), recorded as ? ? ? (pronounced "Tch Tch Tch"). Other links are thread under the surface. Melbourne inner north experimentalist David Chesworth explores his Australiana song-craft leading Whadya Want? on "Open Spaces". The short lived project also featured Philip Jackson, whose duo The Couch is restored from Fast Forward's dance issue - a pioneering cassette fanzine published by early-80s 3RRR personality Bruce Milne. The collection binds a certain musicianship that's indifferent to fame or chart success, although some artists unwittingly experienced this before and after. Poets Of The Machine's Grace Jones techno-wave was a modest moment for Coral Island and Red Stripe, an English migrant who once celebrated a #1 UK Christmas single with an acapella cover of "Yazoo", while the morbid coming of age electronics of Foot And Mouth is a lesser known prologue to Sean Greenway and Matty Whittle's rise as legendary teen punks heroes God. Quickly becoming a modern dancefloor hit, Mumbo Jumbo's sole release "Wind It Up" is only now basking in its brilliance. The remaining figures shape the diversity further. There's Sydney dub addicts The Igniters, Mix's groovy synth song about masturbation and the Cameron Allen and Graham Bidstrup soundtrack for petrol headed "ozploitation" film, Midnite Spares (1983) -- the compilation's namesake.

VA Oz Waves LP
2017 repress. Efficient Space continue to expose Australia's esoteric musical history with Oz Waves - a collection of '80s DIY recordings, compiled by odd wave anthropologist Steele Bonus. Definitive proof that inhabitants of the Down Underground were links in a global network of creative kooks, Oz Waves connects those who utilized mobile recording rigs and small press releases to create and disseminate misfit synth-punk, tape loop experiments, and inner city pop. Through overseas mail order exchanges, anonymous groups like Zerox Dreamflesh could find place on Belgian compilations, while Chris and Cosey lullabied their son to sleep with Irena Xero and her interdisciplinary art collective Zip. Bonus selects ten survivors from the fertile period (1982-1989), most of which were only issued on cassette in tiny editions of five to one-hundred copies. M Squared affiliates Prod join the extraterrestrial Software Seduction, He Dark Age's minimal wave neglect and the irreverent cut ups of The Horse He's Sick and MK Ultra & the Assassins of Light. The remaining tracks have been sourced from musicians' private archives and are being officially released on Oz Waves for the first time - Andy Rantzen's industrial dub Itch-E & Scratch-E precursor, the buoyant vocal-drone of Ironing Music, and Moral Fibro, Sydney's short lived answer to Weekend and Marine Girls. With detailed track-by-track notes, lines are drawn to Severed Heads, Scattered Order, and other antipodean post-punk royalty. As a DJ, Steele Bonus has gained notoriety via the exquisite selections that form his ongoing mix series Odd Waves. Sydney-born, Amsterdam-based, his graphic design has not only been responsible for sleeves on Efficient Space, but also trusted Amsterdam connoisseurs Music From Memory and Young Marco's Safe Trip. DIE TODLICHE DORIS " " LP
Black vinyl repress. "Die Tödliche Doris was born out of West Berlin's lively post-punk community in the early '80s. Along with Einstürzende Neubauten, Malaria, Sprung Aus Den Wolken and Frieder Butzmann, Die Tödliche Doris ranks amongst the Geniale Dilletanten -- which roughly translates as 'ingenious dilettantes' -- who sought to democratize cultural productions beyond the grip of both Western capitalism and GDR socialism. The Geniale Dilletanten became synonymous with a free-for-all approach to music, film, painting and performance where participants encouraged raw expression through provocation and experimentation. Wolfgang Müller and Nikolaus Utermöhlen founded Die Tödliche Doris in 1980, presenting the public persona of Doris as a constantly shifting entity that deliberately engaged the contradictions of the human condition. The band often referenced themselves in the third person singular, alluding to Doris as a fully-formed female character with explosive, colorful emotions. For her debut album -- originally released on Zickzack in 1982 and playfully titled " " (that is, blank space surrounded by quotation marks) -- Doris most closely entertains the notion of a typical rock band with drums, bass and guitar. Produced by Neubauten's Blixa Bargeld, the thirteen songs presented here are disquieting lullabies of profound anxiety, savage and primitive deconstructions of German polka and manic lacerations of punk minimalism: all reflections of the many and fractured personalities of Doris. This first-time vinyl reissue includes a reproduction of the original 24-page booklet."

The A side is taken up by a pair of Lapiana's irresistibly dense grooves that unmistakably tread in the footsteps of his homeland's highly emotional techno, unafraid of big melodies and injecting just the right amount of twisted acid. This sense of grandeur and space is also reflected in the work of fast-rising producer Amotik. Painting with his very own colors as an equally epic scenery, its bleak and post-apocalyptic landscape is dominated by broken industrial beats and hypnotically swirling synths.

DENIAL.OF.SERVICE Contour & Shape 12"
Denial.of.Service returns to FILM for an extended EP of wrought iron electronics, channeling the spirit of classic electro, industrial, and noise. If 2015's Sensou EP (FILM 003EP) communicated a more brooding, emotive side to Denial.of.Service -- then Contour & Shape works in stark contrast. The palette remains relatively unchanged, with the 808 providing the back-bone for most of the compositions -- but this time around the production aesthetic is harsh and abrasive and there's a powerful, burning immediacy to the work. Contour & Shape is a thunderous, high-energy salvo from a true creative with a rich electronic music heritage.

LUCIANI, MARIA TERESA Sounds Of The City LP
Finders Keepers present a reissue of Maria Teresa Luciani's Sounds Of The City, originally released under the Italian name Suoni Di Una Città in 1972. Welcome to the parallel musical universe of Miss Maria Teresa Luciani, a landscape of sonic architecture and theoretical composition constructed by a family of engineers that reinvented the wheel before the vehicle even began the journey. Imagine, if you will, the musical equivalent of Peter Cook's Archigram group or the soundtrack to Charles and Ray Eames's private sketchbooks, hinting at a new municipal, utopian metropolis, just hours before the blueprints are suspiciously misplaced by the courier and mainstream pop building regulations piss on our asbestos bonfire. These 1972 constructions of progressive, cyclic, proto-industrial color music were never intended for public habitation. These are the Sounds Of The City in a galaxy far, far beneath our radar and above your expectations that was never built. Pseudo-futurist pop music, cubic folk, tape-op-art. Before the needle hits the first groove, the story of Maria Teresa Luciani reads like an Alphaville caper full of foreign intrigue, low intensity identification fraud, secret codes, family bonds, mistrust and wanderlust... Naturally, you are holding a genuine Finders Keepers article. To say this rare Italian concept album is "unbelievable" is justified on multiple levels. This multi-story storage facility of found sounds, radiophonic samples, tape loops, early electronic music experiments, mechanical folk, cinematic vision, sound design, educated music theory, political pop, and high concept art-as-noise successfully layers more musical ideas within its unique structure than one would think possible for a solo artist within any musical genre. This is why Sounds Of The City presents a brand new genre defying compositional framework, pre-dating sampling culture, cut-and-paste plunderism, and industrial music in the process. Pre-digital, indefinable and genuinely unbelievable. But who is Maria Teresa Luciani? On hearing this record, respected collectors and enthusiasts have suggested "the female answer to Basil Kirchin", or "the Italian Daphne Oram", both with justified cause. Mystery, myth, legend, teacher, artist, inventor, author, musician, psychologist, daughter, and (possibly most importantly) sister.

SQL Sequel 2LP
Sequel, the long-awaited debut album from SQL, takes the young Amsterdam artist in a new musical direction. The Prophet 5 synth takes center stage on this lush double LP. "Sequel is about rebirth. It's the culmination of everything I have loved, lost, learned, and experienced in the last ten years as a musician," he says. "This cycle is the only constant factor in my music and my career, and by learning to accept it, I've come to terms with the music I make. This album is a reflection of who I am right now at this moment. It's me, no compromise." Embracing a fresh approach that combines the use of numerous pieces of analog gear and samples of his own field recordings, Sequel represents the new sound of SQL in its purest form. "Antipode" features Hessel Stuut. Black-and-white cover with artwork from Hessel Stuut.

RUN-DMC Raising Hell LP
"Up until Raising Hell, the rap juggernaut we know as Run-DMC was still in its building and breaking-down- doors phase. In 1986 that changed, and in a dramatic way. With their third long-player, the group had reached the mountaintop. It was THE record that proved hip-hop wasn't a fad. Raising Hell marked an important and significant new era for the group. Leaving producer Larry Smith for up-and-coming sonic innovator Rick Rubin (still co-produced by Run's brother Russell Simmons), they began to fully transition not only their own sound, but the sound of the entire genre. Less live playing -- with some exceptions -- and a slicker, tighter sonic attack. Musical aesthetics aside, though, at their core they stayed true to the essence of hip-hop: two turntables and a microphone, or two. It's impossible to talk about the album without its worldwide smash, 'Walk This Way,' which hit #4 on the Billboard pop charts and saw the group digging in the rock crates to summon Aerosmith in the flesh, combining Steven Tyler's and Joe Perry's musicianship with the group's own take on the '70s classic. The song's video cemented Run-DMC as legit MTV idols, and both groups rode its wave to new heights. Beyond 'Walk This Way,' the platter is full to the hilt with undeniable classic singles: 'You Be Illin''; 'It's Tricky'; 'Peter Piper' and the fashion-world shifting 'My Adidas.' Each song was new proof that Run-DMC's sound was indeed new, but still familiar, and full of the energy, charisma and innovation that drew fans to their first two LPs. Aside from the singles, the reason the album stands up so well is the fact that there is virtually no filler. 'Proud To Be Black' remains a pioneering and underrated cut when people talk about 'conscious' hip-hop. And to make sure they never lost the streets that gave them their start, 'Hit It Run,' 'Son Of Byford,' 'Is It Live' and 'Perfection' all bring it back to the group's early days in the park. Besides the triple platinum status the album achieved, it was more than just a pop smash. It signaled a new era for rap music, and it was the no-turning- back point for the entire genre. This was the beginning of what we now call the Golden Era, and it still sounds as fresh today as it did three decades ago."

999 Live & Loud CD
Interference present 999's Live & Loud, originally released in 1995 as a split live compilation with Sham 69. 999 kicked off 1977 with I'm Alive and Nasty, Nasty, two notoriously riotous singles that would establish them, alongside a handful of others, in the shadow of the Pistols, Clash, and The Damned. Nick Cash and Guy Days had unknowingly already made it into the history books, but there was much more to come in Homicide (1978), Me And My Desire (1978), Emergency (1978), and The Biggest Prize In Sport (1979). The live recordings within are assured reminders of a vitally important British punk band in their early prime with explosive versions of tracks from their first three albums from 1978-1979. Singles such as Feelin' Alright With The Crew (1978) and Hollywood (1980) clash perfectly with selected album tracks that collectively recall a halcyon period for British youth culture and its soundtrack.

SLAUGHTER & THE DOGS Cranked Up Really High CD
Interference present Slaughter & The Dogs' Cranked Up Really High, a compilation featuring some of the band's earlier material, originally released in 1995. Presented here for the first time on vinyl. Slaughter & The Dogs were one of the first punk rock bands on the English scene in 1976, hailing from the notoriously tough Manchester suburb of Wythenshawe (once the skinhead capital of the North). Although never fully embraced by the punk fashionistas down in London, The Dogs embodied the British sound more than anyone knew it. Hauled around London by Malcolm McLaren, they personified the true urban instincts of rock 'n' roll with a homage to Mick Ronson, The Sweet, New York Dolls, and Lou Reed in venues such as The Roxy, Nashville and The Vortex. Interference present the cutting edge of British punk with what is arguably, the first ever punk rock recordings made in England in 1976. Coupled with outtakes, demos, live tracks, and their rare 1977 debut single, this edition also boasts rare interviews and background liners.

ANDERSEN, HENRY Stanzas Or The Law Of The Good Neighbour LP
Henry Andersen is a Brussels-based visual artist and composer. Trained as a minimal and reductionist composer under the wings of Peter Ablinger, he moved from music into visual art, writing, and sound performances. His debut vinyl is a recording of the long-running piece "Stanzas" or "the Law of the Good Neighbour". On each side, a pair of his friends read simultaneously from a list of words. The list is an unfinished result of a word game Andersen has been playing for several years. Stanzas seems to be a precise text-sound composition, a liquid and elegant piece of concrete poetry that reveals the individual qualities of the voices and their interpersonal relation. But what sounds like a hardcore conceptual and idealist composition has a lot more to it. Being an heir to a playful and prosaic Cagean and Ashleyan tradition, the list of words is a score that acts as a field for an infinite amount of possibilities. Andersen documents some of these many possible outcomes, expressing an urge to be a human body in space, interrelated with others. The composer reveals on the record another face of conceptualism: as a material, personal and truly moving beauty. Text by Henry Andersen; Mastered by Christophe Albertijn; Recorded by David Stampfli; Printed by Gerard Herman and Henry Andersen; Design by rr-jw and Henry Andersen. "A regular fixture on New York's downtown scene in the late 70's, Come On released just two singles in their short but fruitful existence -- the self-released 'Don't Walk On The Kitchen Floor/ A Kitchen In The Clouds' single in 1978 and the mysterious 'Housewives Play Tennis / Howard After 6' single in 1980 (the band was unaware it had ever been released until a copy showed up on eBay 20 years later). Typical of the time, Come On was comprised of a ragtag group of artists and scenesters -- seasoned musician George Elliott (guitar), conceptual guru Ralf Mann (bass), illustrator Page Wood (drums), teenager Elena Glasberg (guitar) who would study for class between gigs, and Jamie Kaufman (vocals) who had never sung before (or since) fronting Come On. With a unified egalitarian look of white button down shirts and black pants and Kaufman's arresting stage presence the band embodied what they called 'Nervous Rock Music.' Stripped down and tense, Come On's brand of minimalist rock teemed with agitation, sexual frustration, and a wry, dark humor. Compiling the band's two singles, unreleased tracks, live material from the late 70's, and including a 20-page booklet full of archival images and liner notes by noted biographer Chris O'Leary, Come On is recommended for fans of early Talking Heads, DNA, Pere Ubu, and Half Japanese."

KOZMONAUT Flieg LP
Mental Experience present a reissue of Kozmonaut's Fleig, originally released in 1986. Ultra-rare DIY minimal/synth-pop/industrial/dark wave album. Kozmonaut was the personal project of a young and talented Canadian musician called Michael Gutierrez, who moved to San Francisco in the early '80s. Influenced by Kraftwerk, German culture, and electronic music, Michael recorded the Flieg album all by himself at his garage studio, using the pseudonym of Hans Schiller. 1000 copies were pressed on his own label, Vier Productions Inc., but they were never distributed or sold at the time, with virtually the entire pressing being discarded, as Michael, a perfectionist, was not satisfied with the spelling mistakes on the cover, among other things. In 1989, Michael, along with Pieter Ziegelmeier, formed the famous industrial/electronic band Kode IV. Sadly, Michael contracted AIDS and passed away in 1994. All the contents of his garage (tapes, albums, synths, and recording equipment) were sold for cheap or ended up in the street. Fast forward to 2010: An adventurous record hunter (Christian Peintner) finds a copy of Flieg at a thrift shop in San Francisco. At first, he thinks it's a German album but after some investigation, he discovers the name of Michael Gutierrez which leads him to Kode IV and then to Peter Ziegelmeier. He visits Peter who tells him the real story of Michael Gutierrez. Flieg is an excellent album, a crossover of a wide range of styles from early industrial (paving the way for Michael's later sounds with Kode IV), to synth-pop, experimental electronics, ambient, and dark wave. Michael uses the vocoder very effectively and for one of the songs, "Tidal Meditation", he recorded the Golden Gate Bridge fog horn to use as a sample. Original artwork, with spelling mistakes corrected; Insert with liner notes; Includes download coupon.

"Bugeye" follows suit; a characteristically high-impact percussive track forms the base from which Burchett and Slater implement their plans for layering sonic architecture. HAYES, ISAAC Do Your Thing LP
2017 repress. "The full 33-minute, unreleased, psychedelic funk jam session by Memphis rhythm kingpins the Bar-Kays, mixed directly from the original tapes. Contains bonus rhythm section instrumental and booklet detailing the history of this never-before-heard version of one of Isaac Hayes's most famous songs by Hayes historian Bill Dahl. Hayes was already a cutting-edge funk master at Stax Records when he accepted the unprecedented assignment of creating a soundtrack for the 1971 action flick Shaft. At a time when R&B songs routinely timed out at three minutes and under, Hayes's albums for Stax's Enterprise imprint had been breaking new ground since 1969. His masterpiece Hot Buttered Soul consisted of only four tracks, two songs on The Isaac Hayes Movement clocked in at a hair under 12 minutes, and one selection on his ... To Be Continued stretched to 15:33. But his epic 'Do Your Thing,' one of the cornerstones of the two-LP Shaft soundtrack, outdid them all. Occupying nearly the entire last side of the set, it concluded after 19-and-a-half grooving minutes with the overdubbed sound of a needle scratching violently across a piece of vinyl. No one knew that jarring ending masked the existence of another 13 minutes of 'Do Your Thing.' Consigned to the vaults, those improvisatory extensions -- somewhere in between free-jazz and psychedelic rock -- were seemingly destined never to be heard. Until now."

VA Welcome To Zamrock! Vol. 2: How Zambia's Liberation Led To A Rock Revolution CD/BOOK
"By the mid-1970s, the Southern African nation known as the Republic of Zambia had fallen on hard times. Though the country's first president Kenneth Kaunda had thrown off the yoke of British colonialism, the new federation found itself under his self-imposed, autocratic rule. Conflict loomed on all sides of this landlocked nation. Kaunda protected Zambia from war, but his country descended into isolation and poverty. This is the environment in which the '70s rock revolution that has come to be known as Zamrock flourished. Fuzz guitars were commonplace, as were driving rhythms as influenced by James Brown's funk as Jimi Hendrix's rock predominated. Musical themes, mainly sung in the country's constitutional language, English, were often bleak. In present day Zambia, Zamrock markers were few. Only a small number of the original Zamrock godfathers that remained in the country survived through the late '90s. AIDS decimated this country, and uncontrollable inflation forced the Zambian rockers that could afford to flee into something resembling exile. This was not a likely scene to survive -- but it did. Welcome To Zamrock!, presented in two volumes, is an overview of its most beloved ensembles, and a trace of its arc from its ascension, to its fall, to its resurgence. 103-page hard cover book with CD. TRAPPES, PENELOPE Penelope One LP
Penelope Trappes present her new album Penelope One on Optimo Music: "In 2016. I rented out a small piano studio in East London for nearly the whole year and set out to write an introspective, trendless, and mostly beatless album. Inspired by albums from This Mortal Coil and Scott Walker, who also sought freedom to work outside of the expectations of their previous work, I limited the instrumentation to mostly an acoustic piano and effects, which left space to expose a lot of emotional vulnerabilities about myself and people close to me. Writing lullabies about being a mother in a dystopian world, with pensive words about swimming against the current as a female artist, I felt free enough to tell untold truths that I've never felt comfortable talking about within music. Free, liberated, empowered, naked."

HARGREAVES, ANDREW Pose Plastique LP
Andrew Hargreaves (The Boats, Tape Loop Orchestra) presents his striking first works for dance with Pose Plastique; the unrequited, roiling musique concrète score to choreography by Belgian dancer Anaïs Ureel. Pose Plastique marks bends and loops in time as the first release under Andrew's government name since 2010's Avant Garde for ONO, following a period of belligerent industrial rhythms and abstracted electronics with a much more refined sense of bio-kinetic movement captured within stark, echoic space. Pushing himself beyond usual comfort zones, and using a kinetograph score of movements which was effectively illegible to Andrew, the results of Pose Plastique reveal a keen sensitivity towards supple and super spacious sound design, eschewing any sort of "incessant pounding", as he initially feared he was supposed to, in favor of a series of diffused rhythmic triggers and physical gestures that mirror elements of Ostgut Ton's works for dance, Masse (OSTGUT 026CD, 2013), as much as Jeff Mills's most abstract techno navigations and the plonging, weightless meters of Bernard Parmegiani's seminal GRM works. As these things go, the commission never fully manifested. Anaïs ended up disenchanted by dance (not due to Andrew's music) and eventually moved to New Zealand. Fast forward a few years and Andrew made the decision to edit the recordings for this 31-minute release, simultaneously offering encrypted instructions for movement to any willing bodies, while its free-floating sequence of rhythmic and tonal structures act as a hugely absorbing listen in their own right. It's perhaps testament to Andrew's gifted, mutable compositional skills and musical vision that Pose Plastique works in its own right. By his own admission, Andrew's not really a dancer, but he's clearly attuned to what makes abstract dance music tick, and to the integral connection between living bodies and machines, and the way they've become conditioned by electronics ever since the explosion of avant-garde electronic music in the '60s, to the impulses of disco and new wave, and its contemporary application. RIYL: Tony Conrad, Demdike Stare, GRM, Emptyset. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton; Comes on green vinyl; Edition of 300.

SPRENGER, KONRAD Stack Music LP
Having felt restrained by the limits of traditional instruments and the techniques tied to them, composer, music producer, and artist Konrad Sprenger (b. Joerg Hiller), spent years developing various algorithms and custom instruments to realize his work. His recent focus has been on rhythmic patterns based on the Euclidean algorithm, using a computer-controlled multi-channel electric guitar. The unique system can create complex rhythmical patterns whilst tuning the strings during performance -- sounding at once like an electronic instrument, a drum computer, a guitar, a harpsichord, even at times as a full orchestra. Hiller has long collaborated and performed with minimalist Arnold Dreyblatt, and musician/instrument builder Ellen Fullman amongst others, and first built primitive acoustic mechanical instruments, gradually developing a more complex, digitally-controlled system. "My guitar gives me the possibility to discover almost every aspect of the sound produced by the excitation of the string -- as if scientifically under a magnifying glass," he says. "I can control such parameters as the speed and time, length of the attack, the intensity, the pitch (allowing the use of different tuning systems), and the location of each string in space by the use of six speakers." Early on, Hiller realized that the harmonically complex sound of strings are impossible to reproduce digitally, and therefore became interested in the development of mechanical instruments, visiting European collections of pianolas and orchestrions in Belgium and Holland. Within his live performances and on this new recording, his music is influenced by the insistent rhythms from minimalism, krautrock, and techno, and their shared focus on transcendence through a propulsive, full-spectrum sound. Informed by early American folk music and its descendants (John Fahey et al.), his new album Stack Music presents a selection of recordings over the years from residencies and live performances, such as "Opening", an early live performance of the digital guitar system recorded in New York and composed at Phill Niblock's Intermedia Foundation Loft, whilst "Rondo" consists of recordings of the guitar played by a motor with shoelace exciters, horns, and piano harp. In "Largo", he utilizes the software Melodyne to generate midi notes from an original guitar system recording. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering; Artwork by Bill Kouligas.

ERSEN Dunden Bugune LP
Pharaway Sounds present a reissue of Ersen's debut album Dünden Bugüne, originally released in 1977. Ersen is one of Anatolian rock's most sheerly talented vocalists. Ersen spent time in Mo?ollar, 3 Hür-El, and Cem Karaca's Karda?lar before cementing his reputation as the front man of Dada?lar. His voice can range from one that has a soft edge (where he swallows his notes a bit, like a muezzin would), to growling belt-outs that could have fronted any '80s metal act. Ersen and his ever-changing backup band wore Slade haircuts and loud jackets with rainbow pants or silver platform shoes, and they grew their moustaches just as long as the Beatle-bangs of their western counterparts. Synth-wizz, funk breaks, and fuzzed-out prog riffage back one of Anatolian rock's best vocalists -- Turkish psych-rock with some amazing funk drums and fuzzed-out guitars. Comes in gatefold sleeve with original artwork; Includes insert with liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records); Remastered sound.

He was discovered by Cem Karaca, was connected to Mo?ollar and 3 Hür-El, and even switched backing bands with Cem before finally hitting the charts with his own group Dada?lar. There are loads of B sides and burly moves on these '70s singles which make up his second LP. Wicked funk drums, fuzzy guitars, organs, and the powerful voice of Ersen. Includes "Zalim", the killer psych-funk track made famous by Gaslamp Killer's edit. Ersen's very last name, Dinleten, means "listen", and that's exactly what you should do. CHIAVAROLI, MAT No Stranger To Madness 2x12"
Following a number of exciting tunes released on the renowned label Quintessentials, here comes Mat Chiavaroli's first long-player, No Stranger To Madness. Warm Fostex tape hisses and MPC swings, the guy from the Pescara hills delivers ten tracks for both your dancing and listening pleasure. The A and B side tracks are drenched in dusty funk samples, gritty chords, and syncopated rhythms. In "Aroma De Mi Vida", Mat chops obscure Rhodes riffs and layers them with more elements, just like in "Whoja Vu", a heavy-sampled disco juggler very close to his previous Quintessentials release (QUINTESSE 046EP, 2016). On the flip, we find some deep chords melting with powerful gospel vocals, giving life to a track that annihilates boring dancefloors. There's a similar vibe in "Jeep Ridaz" that reminisces about seminal Atavisme classics, with broken detuned bits and agitated cut-and-pastes that give a sense of randomness. The second part of this album shows Mat Chiavaroli's deeper side. "Double Pain" is a tune that progressively brings you many aspects of what Mat loves; saturated female vocals stick out while gloomy chords gently develop. "Storia Losca" has a slightly different attitude with a huge synth presence, live percussion, and dreamy pianos. The D side opens with "The Quiet Bobobo", a distorted floor delight and ends with something closer to Mat's early music, disclosing a fresh collaboration with the young studio fellow P Lok. No Stranger To Madness fits many bills and is an impressive proof of what Mat's musical ability is.

VYNEHALL, LEON Rojus (Designed To Dance) 2x12"
2017 repress. Double 12" version. Leon Vynehall has established himself as a genuine artist, creating proper songs that are as layered with musicality and craftsmanship as they are in tune with the dancefloor. Drawing influence from house, techno, disco, funk, hip hop, and soul, Vynehall's music incorporates many elements from his musical past as well; his journey, like most, began with playing drums and piano in bands as a teenager, which manifests itself in the raw, live sound he strives for in his productions. His work has seen him dabble in various tempos, palettes, and styles while always remaining unmistakably his own, reflecting his wide-ranging listening habits, which span everything from classical and orchestral compositions to post-punk. Vynehall describes the inspiration for Rojus (Designed To Dance): "Two years ago I played at Studio 9 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The following day I missed my flight home and ended up spending an extra day, which gave me a chance to explore the city with my friend Linus, who took me to the Contemporary Art Centre. It was there I spotted a book named Rojus, that Linus told me translated as 'Paradise'. The word and striking cover of the book stuck in my mind. A few days after returning home, I turned on a National Geographic documentary named Designed To Dance, explaining the courtship rituals of Birds Of Paradise." Rojus (Designed To Dance), Vynehall goes on to explain, is a "record of functional club music, sequenced as if it were a club night, from doors to closing, using samples of these Birds Of Paradise and their habitat."

VA Funky Chimes: Belgian Grooves From The 70's 2CD
The first half of the seventies in Belgium should be regarded as a Golden Age, when a generation of great musicians experimented with funk, jazz, Latin, and other groovy genres. Unearthing these treasures takes time since most of them are hidden on single B-sides or obscure editions of library music. In 2014, Sdban Records collected a selection of lost gems with Funky Chicken (SDBAN 001CD/001LP/002LP). Funky Chimes combines lesser-known tracks of well-known artists with newly discovered names, and bona fide diggers gold. The music's quality matches that of its predecessor, but the treasure hunt was even more adventurous, and the stories behind some of the nuggets even more gripping. Take Experience (performer unknown), for instance: this one was found on a five-inch flexi disc people in Belgium could obtain by saving points from cookies and pasta packages. And The Sumos, a band brought into existence to cash in on Carl Douglas's "Kung Fu Fighting" (1974), released an entire album filled with oriental bubblegum. But Funky Chimes is not a freak show, but a two-hour collection of excellent and unique grooves. The Free Pop Electronic Concept is a rare blend of soul and budding electronic music. Skleroptak is a one-off collaboration between the Polish saxophonist Jan Wróblewski and the jazz orchestra of the Belgian national broadcast corporation. There are also some lesser-known top tracks from grandmasters here. The late lamented Marc Moulin is featured in three different performances: as a pianist on Philip Catherine's debut, as a master arranger on the Belgian chansonnier Lieven's only album, and with the hitherto unknown radio tune "Mona Call" he produced as Kiosk. CD version includes 36-page booklet. Features: The Soul Scratchers, Francis Coppieters, S.S.O., The Flying Guitar, The Sumos, Bud Hunga And His Diplomatic Music, Experience, The Peter Laine Orchestra, Kandahar, Kiosk, Guido Carnagy, André Brasseur, Electronic System III, The Indian Sound Of... RUBY SUNS, THE Sprite Fountain LP
LP version. The Ruby Suns, the band-ish pseudonym of nomadic Californian-New Zealander Ryan McPhun, return after four years with a brilliant record, Sprite Fountain. It began in earnest upon moving to Oslo, Norway from Auckland in 2013's twilight with impending fatherhood tapping him on the shoulder. A slowly ripening thing, it was made amidst child rearing and touring with NZ pals Lawrence Arabia. Having released on Sub Pop and Memphis Industries in the past, Ruby Suns' Sprite Fountain, a pithy nine songs running over thirty-three minutes, is stylistically an amalgam of the four previous Ruby Suns records. Rhythmically and harmonically complex, McPhun's influences are eluded to like snatches of a jukebox heard across a busy motorway. The touchstones are brief -- ELO for four bars, a hint of Julia Holter in an arrangement -- before they disappear into a kaleidoscopic tapestry that reveals McPhun to be a singular savant, hinted at by his diverse back catalog. Though harmonious in macro, there is a mania within -- a fitting analog to what is often the predicament of a new parent: constantly under-slept, delirious, and confused, yet somehow elated. Not to mention the matter of cultural isolation that comes with being an immigrant in a new country, and an antipodal one at that. McPhun has trouble relating to the "Pram Gang" he passes by on the street and grapples with Norway's political movements in "Blåhvalene". He then goes back to California with the Wilsonesque "Blankee" -- a Steinbeck-referencing ode to his teenage surf break (Ventura Point) and the almost a capella album closer "King Cake". "Gatrapa" is a Tropicalia-induced, Siri Hustvedt-quoting epistle on the inexorable parade of time, and "Tilt Of His Hat" is a jovial but bumpy supplication to an overworked and overstressed loved one. "K Rd Woody" recounts halcyon days on Auckland's Karangahape Road with its transient dive bars and cheap late night eateries, while "Waterslide" is a fuzzy cautionary tale of primitivism gone awry. Sprite Fountain was made almost single-handedly by Ryan McPhun in Scandinavia. He then moved onto Spice Boys studio in Copenhagen, with finishing touches made in a friend's 18th century villa in Chelva, Spain. Bevan Smith visited Norway with his Eventide Harmonizer and assisted with the final mix. Sprite Fountain is a treasure box of potent ideas, discrete and often discreet. A blissful, psychedelic and always totally surprising listen; with each subsequent listen revealing gleaming new attractions.

ECHIUM Synthetic Space LP
The sferic label bubbles up from Manchester city center with Echium's debut suite of charming ambient gestures, neatly expanded by empathetic, weightless house remixes from local cuties, Perfume Advert and Space Afrika. Their mutual first move, Synthetic Space positions both Echium and sferic within a well-rooted tradition of Berlin kosmische, dub, and Detroit techno-informed electronics emanating from the rainy city, producing a wistful spirit that resonates with Martin Hannett's work for The Durutti Column as much as J.S. Zeiter's mutable dub techno and the humbly mannered moves of the CCO and meandyou labels. Its eight original tracks oscillate between effervescent tones and grained electronics with a carefully realized, cybernetic nuance, locating a lush balance of haptic nudge and detached process that really gets under the skin in altered states. It's active in the opening cut, "Blended Textures"' swirl of arid chords and frothing acid, and smudged deeply into the glowing pores of "Juum" and the noumenal bleep space of "Looum", and aching with a love-bot sentience in the Shinichi Atobe-esque title track, all on the A side, whereas the B side subtly edges up the bass to tactile, insistent degrees with the air-stepping "Ethereal" and "Activation" beauties giving way to the arabesque vignette, "Jazz Interlude". Special mention, then for the remixes, with Salford's Perfume Advert playing to their Anxiety Support Group tendencies with nervously deferred but soothing results, and the ascendant Space Afrika duo hustling a rolling, heads-down "Tribalist Dub" version that leaves the disc simmering for another spin. RIYL: Lee Gamble, Lanark Artefax, Jan Jelinek, Shinichi Atobe. Master and lacquer cut by Stefan Betke at Scape.

MUSCI, ROBERTO The Loa Of Music (The Complete Sessions) 2LP
Soave present the first vinyl reissue of Roberto Musci's The Loa Of Music, originally released in 1984. The Loa Of Music is the debut recording project of Milanese composer and musician Roberto Musci, inspired by voodoo religion, Vever (the magical voodoo paintings), and Loas, the dark and magic spirits. The deep charm of non-western music led Musci to travel for many years across Africa, India, and Asia, studying rhythms, scales, performance, and interpretation of the most varied traditional and indigenous music. He made many field recordings and collected ethnic instruments that would then be combined with synthesizers and electronics in The Loa Of Music. Recorded in 1983, the project originally had 80 minutes of music, but only half was released on the original LP. For the first time, Soave have pressed the complete recording sessions from the original tapes of this phenomenally ambitious masterpiece that entirely refuses the well-trod path -- distilling a remarkable range of sonic reference and reality. A work of field recording, musique concrète, electronics, synthesis, and instrumentation, pulling from countless musics from across the globe, the result is nothing short of brilliant and stunningly beautiful. A near perfect work -- an egoless gesture, which rather than attempting to find consensus, offers every voice equity and cohabitation -- harnessing the history music, with all of its cultural diversity, as a vision for a more ideal future. Geographies and their sounds intertwine, while Musci's interventions and instrumentation thread a path. Ambiences ripple, sounds and voices converse in a vision of unity that may only exist within sonic realms. Unquestionably seminal, and one of the most important works to emerge from Italy in the last 50 years. Never before issued on vinyl since its original release, this will surely not to be around for long.

JOHNSON, RAGNAR Ethiopian Urban And Tribal Music: Mindanoo Mistiru/Gold From Wax 2LP
Double LP version. Includes color insert. Sub Rosa present a reissue of volume one (Mindanoo Mistiru) and two (Gold From Wax) of Ethiopian Urban And Tribal Music, both originally released as two distinct LPs on Lyrichord in 1972. Mindanoo Mistiru and Gold From Wax were recorded by Ragnar Johnson. Ethiopia contains many diverse peoples and many styles of music. It was still an empire in July and August of 1971 when these recordings were made. Over 70 languages and 200 dialects are spoken in Ethiopia. In much of the music, lyrics are more important than instrumentation, and the transmission is oral. The urban musicians, the bagana, and Mary Armeede, were recorded in Addis Ababa. Ethiopian urban musicians come from many parts of the country and are familiar with, and adapt to, styles of regions other than their own. The Afar divination chants and flutes were recorded in the Danakil desert. The Anuak toum and Nuer harp, lament and dance were recorded near the Sudan border. The Konso dance and the Gidole Fila flute dance were recorded near the Kenya border. Mindanoo Mistiru means "What is the Unknown?". EREK, CEVDET Davul LP
LP version. Ahead of his representing Turkey at 2017's Venice Biennale, Subtext presents Istanbul-based Cevdet Erek's first full-length album Davul. The title refers to the instrument performed by Erek, a large drum with many names, common from Eastern Europe to the Middle East, known variably as a daouli (Greek), tapan (Macedonian), dahol (Kurdish), or tabl (Arabic), to cite a few. Erek plays the drum with his own unusual method, utilizing a large soft mallet alongside various smaller implements to beat and distort the skin of the drum, tuned lower than normal, taking advantage of being able to walk around the studio or installation spaces with the instrument. Erek acquired the drum from a Roma musician, and proceeded to play it in private for years where he developed this new textural approach, integrating the instrument into his A Room of Rhythms installation piece at Istanbul Biennial in 2015. Comprising extracts culled from hours of solo drum improvisations recorded over two days in Berlin, Davul features no editing or overdubbing. At times Erek describes "playing to get the negative and aggressive away from inside of me, hoping that I could do the same for the other people surrounding me." He refers to a shamanic history of healing rituals -- although the davul is most commonly used for weddings, dances, and celebrations. "Of course the aesthetics of dark electronics and noise that I've been exposed to for decades informs the overall feel as well," adds Erek. Over seven improvised pieces, Erek conjures a massive variety of uncharacteristic sounds and colors from the drum, from deep scrapes and grinds to heavy rubs and drones, creating complex rhythms. Experimentation with rhythm, meter, and silence has always been at the core of what Erek does -- from his work as a conceptual artist, presenting work at the likes of dOCUMENTA, to decades as the drummer in Turkish experimental rock band Nekropsi -- but Davul is his purest statement-of-intent to date; a raw and hypnotic exploration of flow and dynamics. Cevdet Erek was born in Istanbul in 1974, where he would initially study Architecture. Originally formed in 1989, Erek has also been the longtime drummer with Turkish experimental music stalwarts, Nekropsi. Erek has also worked on sound and music for film, most recently contributing original music and sound design to Emin Alper's 2015 film Frenzy (SUB 017LP, 2016).

STERLING, MAXWELL Hollywood Medieval (2017 Edition) LP
Necessary first vinyl edition of Hollywood Medieval, the debut album of psycho-geographic dramaturgy by Manchester-born soundtrack composer, Maxwell Sterling. It was initially issued as a digital release on LA-based Memory No.36 Recordings in 2016 to a round of acclaim from Fact Magazine and The Wire and has now been remastered by Matt Colton for this vinyl edition. It sounds as plasticky sensuous as it should, and arguably looks worthy of a wall or pedestal in a Bel Air or Moss Side pad thanks to its striking bespoke cover art collage, titled "She Who Gave Birth To The Three Worlds", by radical feminist and Manchester punk legend, Linder (Sterling), aka Maxwell's mum. Hollywood Medieval is an album about the glaring disparities and elaborate, underlying convolutions the composer observed and felt while working as a nanny for wealthy parents during his film composition studies at UCLA in the early part of the 2010s. Using an augmented palette of classic DX7 and Juno 60 synths along with a severely warped bank of library samples and iPhone recordings, it spells out a queasily evocative simulacra of the city in flux, animating a sort of Ballardian tableaux that's hyper-descriptive in its rendering of the hazy, dosed-up, and often delirious transitions between Hollywood's glamor and grime, using LA's gurning facades and ostentatious wealth as prompts for a richly visual side of sawn-off emotive signposts and jazz-taut turns of phrase that vividly etch on the memory in neon freehand. From the dizzying sugar rush of the opening sequence, "Hollywood Medieval I", to its spiraling counterpoint in "Hollywood Medieval II", the album is an inception-like concerto, with Maxwell smartly subverting the film score composer's role by placing the music center stage and allowing the narration to be carried by virtuosic flourishes owing to the artist's classical and jazz music schooling, In a sense, Hollywood Medieval resonates with the way Sam Kidel subverted the nature of ambient music on Disruptive Muzak (RAVE 014LP, 2016), and offers an alternative, lucid view of the hazy LA offered by Delroy Edwards's Teenage Tapes (2014), and likewise, works like a present diagnosis of the dystopian future worlds dreamed up in The Sprawl's dystopian, widescreen visions on E.P.1 (RAVE 013EP, 2015), effectively broadening and illuminating The Death Of Rave's own sonic hauntology. RIYL: Oneohtrix Point Never, James Ferraro, TCF. Master and lacquer cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy; Edition of 500.

MARNIE, RUPERT Dog EP 12"
The Press Group's new issue is a tale of lost love and broken hearts. "Blaine Mcconchie" is a constantly evolving minimal-heyday-inspired trip through bleeping artifacts driven by an organ chord, while on the flipside "Dog Park" is a classic groover for lush summer evenings. Frankfurt's Phil Evans gives "Blaine Mcconchie" his treatment, taking the central melody and building a sparse rhythm workout around it. 180 gram vinyl; Transparent sleeve.

KENNEDY, INIGO Tornado 12"
Inigo Kennedy's refined, courageous sound continues to be a definitive element of Token's output. After the NCG EP (TOKEN 062EP, 2016) and Surrender/Castles In The Air (TOKEN 067EP, 2016), Kennedy is back with a three-track EP. "Tornado" is vast and cinematic. A thundering kick becomes ripe with swelling strings followed by a bright, wistful lead and long, suspenseful breaks. "Glacier" is more measured in its expression, with icy keys playing out a restrained sentimentality over an earthy groove. "Voyager" is energetic; crisp and crunchy percussion melds into an ever-moving melody that wavers in-and-out of the foreground.

PORTER RICKS Anguilla Electrica 2LP
Double LP version. First full-length in seventeen years from the Chain Reaction/Force Inc. legends. Ever since their initial singles were released in the mid-1990s and became international calling cards for the Chain Reaction label, the Porter Ricks duo of Thomas Köner and Andy Mellwig have represented that crucible point in which techno music leaked into new social environments and became the background music for cutting-edge cultural critique. Their submerged "scuba" sound, presented in dark tone colors and reverberating to infinity, is now instantly identifiable as one of the "soundmarks" of Berlin club culture. Just as importantly, it is still a palpable aftershock of a pre-millenial genre explosion that saw deep dub, shimmering post-rock, abstract hip-hop, and art-damaged noise all drinking from the same well of inspiration. For proof of Porter Ricks's enduring legacy, look no further than the fact that "dub techno" is now a stylistic movement that has expanded far beyond the confines of Berlin and the Basic Channel/Chain Reaction label alliance (where Mellwig's mastering skills also played a starring role). Lurid traces of Porter Ricks's aesthetic can now be found in the work of producers like Andy Stott and Miles Whittaker, showing the potential for the duo's unique "aquatic" techniques to be applied to a variety of different musical contexts. Their new LP on Tresor, Anguilla Electrica, may be their first full-length release in seventeen full years, but it radiates with confidence and with a clarity and intensity rarely seen in a world so over-saturated with communications noise. It's made clear at once that it's a continuation of a sonic ideal rather than a tribute to what has already been achieved: the duo is not idly sitting back while their newer acolytes do their talking for them. This new LP is well worth the wait and is a life-affirming one in an uncertain and perilous time, drowning out daily anxieties like a rush of incoming surf -- yet it is far more invigorating than relaxing. True to the Porter Ricks's tradition, it will be just as exciting hearing this music as it will be to experience what new cultural mutations it leaves in its wake.

OLSSON Millions 2LP
On Millions, Olsson effortlessly spans dance, indie, pop, and more in-between genres. Opener "Hold On" -- a collaboration with the sharp tongue of Sweden's Mapei -- leads with a classic hip-hop beat before breaking into a danceable indie swagger, and has already seen Olsson achieve high-profile acclaim from the likes of Zane Lowe, Noisey, and more. Elsewhere, on tracks such as "This Heat" and "Satellite (Only Analog Talks)", Olsson channels a '90s rave influence while also delivering a gnarled Brit indie rock bite, which plays like the tripped-out love child of Kasabian and jungle. "Ca M'est Egal" features Daniel Adams-Ray. Comes in a gatefold sleeve with printed deluxe sleeve, inner sleeves; 180 gram vinyl.

BAMBOO The Dragon Flies Away LP
LP version. Blue vinyl; Gatefold sleeve with lyric insert and download card; Edition of 300. Bamboo, the ongoing project from Nick Carlisle (Peepholes, Don't Argue) and Rachel Horwood (Trash Kit, Halo Halo) present their second studio album, The Dragon Flies Away. Far from being a side-project, Bamboo is very much a fully realized pursuit, with the band working on multiple records simultaneously from their Brighton and London base camps. Initially released on Crumb Cabin in a limited run of 50 cassettes in the winter 2016, with an accompanying zine designed by Horwood, The Dragon Flies Away tells a story loosely associated with the Hannya demon mask of Noh theatre plays such as Dojoji, and reflects the range of emotion the Hannya mask is capable of displaying: obsession, jealousy, sorrow, and rage. The Dragon Flies Away presents its story in two acts. Vivid and deeply poignant, Bamboo's music locks into a magnetic attraction between Horwood's flawlessly resonant folk cadence and Carlisle's pristine synth production. "Hannya" opens the album in a reflective mood with Rachel's mournful vocal and echoing banjo that gets swept up by flourishes of percussion and synth-flute vistas. "Always Running" follows, living up to its name with its propulsive beat and plucked rhythm, building to a chase for Rachel's dramatic vocal turn. "Like A Sparrow" is a beautifully realized track sounding as vulnerable and vociferous as a Kate Bush song. "Wake Up Your Heart" delights in pools of pitch-shifted melody and primal vision. Whilst the final two tracks on the album embrace Carlisle's cascading synth lines as pure as ice flows, augmented gong passages and fragile yet impassioned vocalizations. Overall the album feels film-like, with an ability to hold the listeners hand and lead them through another world. It's ambitious and heavy on concept without ever becoming overwrought, preserving its delicate personal tone and lush, spacious sound throughout. During the writing and subsequent release of their debut album, Prince Pansori Priestess, (UTR 075CD/LP, 2015), The Dragon Flies Away was recorded between Spring 2015 and Summer 2016.

TERRY Remember Terry LP
LP version. 180 gram vinyl. Terry is also a band from Melbourne, Australia: Amy Hill (Constant Mongrel, School Of Radiant Living), Xanthe Waite (Mick Harvey Band, Primo), Zephyr Pavey (Eastlink, Total Control, Russell St Bombings), and Al Montfort (UV Race, Dick Diver, Total Control). Guitars, bass, drums, all four sing. Terry is a particularly active, having released two EPs and a full-length album Terry HQ (UTR 084CD/LP) in 2016 on Upset The Rhythm. After returning from summer 2016's European tour, Terry set about writing a new album of songs. These are now grouped together as Remember Terry, an album full of wish fulfilment, critiqued characters, memorial muscle, and historical hustle. "Start The Tape" is a not quite two-minute careen through what Terry are best known for; gang vocals, chased-down melodies and acerbic commentary. Terry draw on their everyday realities to make personal conclusions; "I can't live here, I can't leave here" they collectively sing through the strummed guitars and skittling synths of "Heavin Heavies". Somehow the serious nature of the themes handled in their songs are only further emphasized by the tuneful, arguably "sing-along" treatment Terry usually employ. "Give Up The Crown", "The Colonel", and "Gun" are other prime examples of this, packed full of assembled vocal harmonies, contagious riffs, and rhetoric. With tracks like "Glory" and "Homage", Terry allow their fans to see a more laid-back side of their personality. Supplemented with fluorescing synth lines and adopting an unhurried pace, both songs lull you into a false sense of pleasantry, only to pack a greater punch when lyrics like "Off his bloody head goes", or, "No head, no choice, no land, no time, no crime, no good" surface. "Take Me To The City" is a similarly evocative stroll through the "bright night city lights", with Amy and Xanthe listing their nightlife observations over languorous guitar lines and programmed drums. Terry prefer to make a profound point in a quiet way, hectoring bypassed for self-revelation. The truth is in there, just skating below the surface of their glammy, country-stepping punk/pop odysseys, you only have to listen carefully. Remember Terry is a fitting follow-up to last year's celebrated debut album. Throughout an expansion of sound and subject-matter though, Terry remain committed to telling it straight, reporting from the frontline of the political made personal. Digitized by Nick Kuceli. Mixed and mastered by Mikey Young.

VA Secret Weapons Part 2 12"
Dutch imprint Wolfskuil Records continues their Secret Weapons series. Each track is a heavy-hitter, exposes three different approaches to peak-time techno. Doka's "Inure" starts thing off with a pummeling introduction full of wavering energy, tense murky depths, and a startling synth line. A much rougher, more distorted cut appears with Cadans & Kracht's "Lompret", summoning up warehouse memories with its echoing rough percussive hits that clamor for attention over an overdriven, crunchy backdrop. Tim Wollf's "Overt Agent" builds up from dense, groove-ridden beginnings into a climactic crowd pleaser, with a progressive surge of energy fed alongside a Detroit-inspired arrangement.

Roots In Heaven is a Berlin-based act that could very easily capitalize on his past accomplishments within the world of intrepid electronic music. As a prelude to the first full-length (ZEHNIN 003CD/LP, 2017), Roots In Heaven present an untitled EP. "Sang Des Betes" accomplishes total immanence with cascading, viscous layers of electronic tones that narrow and widen, rise and fall. "Affaire Des Rats" is underpinned by a cardiac rhythm and overlaid with a tranquil layer of white noise. It's is another fascinating survey of a world where the artificial and organic can no longer be easily distinguished from one another.

ROOTS IN HEAVEN Petites Madeleines LP
LP version. Roots In Heaven is a Berlin-based act that could very easily capitalize on his past accomplishments within the world of intrepid electronic music. As a label owner, resident DJ at cutting-edge clubs, and accomplished solo artist behind a number of conceptually unique full-length albums, the conceiver of this project won't likely need any introduction. As an extension of this artist's already solid commitment to deep sound, Roots In Heaven represents a new voyage without the help of biographical cues to his listeners: hidden behind an evocative mesh mask lined with obsidian feathers, Roots In Heaven ignores the need to provide "social proof" or self-justification. He communicates purely through the language of concentrated sensory impression, for which reason he has titled his debut, Petites Madeleines, after one of the most memorable descriptive sequences in literary history, the famous meditation on the madeleine from Proust's À La Recherche Du Temps Perdu (1913). Built on a chassis of pure analog electronics, unaided by computers, Petites Madeleines presents a single sprawling track whose immersive, meditative quality initiates participants into a realm of reversed energy currents. Using a sonic technique which, for example, drapes the listener in darkness until it becomes light (and vice versa), this piece provides a pervasive feeling of other realities opening up that complement the already familiar. The looped pulses and frequency sweeps hover and expand with all the assuredness of early-'70s Cluster, but without anything consciously "retro" or overt references in their presentation. Though the project is as opposed to the current trend of distortion overload as it is opposed to cults of personality, Petites Madeleines occasionally bristles with an abrasiveness that separates it from more patronizing experiments in raising/altering consciousness. As feedback drones and anxious percolations snake their way around the base structure of pulses and subterranean thumps, there is a feeling of challenge or self-confrontation that should be a component of any truly serious spiritual quest. As listeners successfully confront and assimilate these somewhat harsher moments, the cosmic tapestry being woven by Roots In Heaven becomes all the more vibrant and charged with deeply personalized meaning. By the time this hour-long excursion ends, all the constituent sound elements seem to hum and vibrate in unison, allowing listeners to find a whole world within this recording just as Proust found a world within his tea and madeleines.
