DARKSIDE, THE Complete Studio Masters 5CD BOX
Legendary indie space rockers Sterling Roswell and Pete Bassman of Spacemen 3 return as The Darkside after a 23 year hiatus with a five CD Complete Studio Masters box set of remasters, remixes, and demos. One of the projects to emerge from the groundbreaking efforts of the drone-rock pioneers, The Darkside led by Pete Bain (aka Pete Bassman), who on leaving Spacemen 3 prior returned to his hometown of Rugby, would be joined by fellow alumni and multi-instrumentalist Sterling Roswell. Signed soon after to Beggars Banquet due to the strength of their demos and live shows, The Darkside went on to unleash psychedelic gems including; "Waiting For The Angels", "Guitar Voodoo", "Mystic Morning", "All That Noise", and many more. Now, nearly 25 years on, Rosco and Pete have worked front line for both the re-mastering and artwork of this special release. Jonathan Levitt of Blurt Magazine, discusses the band's first release All That Noise (1990): "I can clearly remember back to 1990 when All That Noise was released and the first time I spun it on my Doctor Goth radio show. While simultaneously listening to the sinister opening bass notes of 'Guitar Voodoo' and staring at the cryptic album cover I was transfixed by a band that was thankfully outside of any contrived musical movement being pushed at the time, Madchester anyone? The album is propelled along a very clear trajectory giving a heavy nod to 60's psych along the way. Now some 27 years on, the album remains as it did upon my first listen, a psychedelic gem existing in its own space and time, filled with a sinister, brooding and beguiling set of tracks that continue to astonish." Discs 1 and 2 contain the critically acclaimed debut album All That Noise remastered, plus alternate versions, mixes, instrumentals, demos, bonus unreleased live tracks, and an interview recorded in 1990. Disc 3 contains the follow-up, the second critically acclaimed album Mellomania (1992), remastered in full. Disc 4 contains dub remixes and remastered Mayhem To Meditate EP (1992). Disc 5 contains the Bomp Records Lunar Surf EP (1992), remastered Jukebox At Munster's single (1992), the previously unreleased lost third album, and demos.

MR. STATIK Rogue Cherub EP 12"
The Greek all-rounder Mr. Statik debuts as a producer on Away. Starting off with an ingenious medley assembled through samples, rhythmic elements, and a funk-infused bass-line, Rogue Cherub EP highlights the Greek's unordinary approach to house music. Despite the partly broken, partly playful vibe, it's Dave Aju's distinctive voice holding everything together in a serene fashion. No less than the acknowledged master Matthew Herbert himself scales the hybrid down, attaching just the right disco-house touches to create yet another dancefloor gem. "Morning Star" tops off Away's fifth catalog number by a well-crafted techno-meets-dub workout.

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. Cometary Orbital Drive CD
2008 release. Recorded at Acid Mothers Temple, in August and September of 2008. The first movement is called "Light My Fire Ball" and it seems like a groovy, modern vision of the electro-acoustic transgressions made by Can in "Augmn" and "Peking O", on Tago Mago. The atmosphere propels you into a mystic temple. The voodoo incantations by Atsushi is reminiscent of Damo Suzuki's wild voice. "Planet Billions Of Light-Years Away" reveals the theme of the six powerful notes (A-E-D-A-G-Db). Firstly calm and laid back, then energetic and fast, it is more and more powerful and nervous. The sound is great: part flood-in space guitars, part hooked by the catchy rhythms. But "Circular System 7777777", the third movement of this symphony for heavenly riffs, is completely new for Acid Mothers Temple. It is a kind of psychedelic dance song, with an old-fashioned drum machine, but it's so groovy, with reversed cymbals and sexy psychedelic breaks. The last chapter of Cometary Orbital Drive, called "Milky Way Star", is a masterpiece. The song is a kind of musical illustration of the hyper-space, an inter-sidereal rock trip. The tempo is panting, Makoto's soli are more beautiful than ever. The listening is shivering. These thirteen minutes are equal to the A side of the first Ash Ra Tempel record (1971). The booklet doesn't lie; these six-repeated-over-and-over-notes give bright and powerful sensations, with a krautrock purity that will make you dance to touch the stars. Cometary Orbital Drive is an essential record from the Soul Collective, one of those which mixes great stellar riffs, real grooves, inspired experimentations, and absolute cosmos. Presented in a three-panel digipak.

A QUI AVEC GABRIEL & MICHEL HENRITZI Koyonaku CD
2016 release. Improvised Enka music. Koyonaku is the result of the encounter in downtown Tokyo between Japanese accordionist À Qui Avec Gabriel and guitarist Michel Henritzi. The duo re-interprets through improvisation Enka music, soulful and melancholic popular Japanese songs. They meander through sad melodies in their very own iconoclastic ways. À Qui Avec Gabriel's voice whispers and bewitches the senses with these love songs. Whether on the strings of the guitar or the keys of the accordion, the combined four-handed creative soul, deconstructed abstract blues is the perfect balance of sensuality and violence. Koyonaku is a game of mirrors reflecting different exotic folklore, where each one of them feeds on the other, the suspended space of "mono no aware": this infinite melancholy of the present, echoing its silences, its cries and its screams. A beautiful blues record for your lonely nights. À Qui Avec Gabriel is an Japanese accordionist inspired by both French romantics and punk music. Her music has the charm of Satie's music and the melancholy of the Enka music. She regularly plays with Kawabata Makoto (Acid Mothers Temple), Keiji Haino, and Junzo Suzuki, as well as numerous Tokyo underground artists. SQUIMAOTO squimaoto LP
Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple) presents squimaoto. squimaoto is a female trio from Kobe, Japan formed in 2003. They have been preparing their comeback for 2017 with the help of Kawabata, who has been remixing and adapting their self-titled album (2007). Just on hearing the first few notes of squimaoto, the chaos seems overwhelming. However, this chaos is in fact quite controlled. It is synonymous with loops, permanent returns to square one, then a few detours, and recurring pitfalls. As far as the rhythm, the beat is square, obsessed with symmetry and, despite the icy echoes of a distant guitar, the cymbals hammer a cadence which is neither brutal or lazy -- that's where the uneasiness resides. This mated rhythm sends the listener on an opioid-fueled trip back to the heyday of indie rock. "Uida", the eight-minute opening track, seems to delay the explosion; It evolves, meandering slowly around an obsessive looped pattern which is only a few seconds long. The trio seems to enjoy teasing the listener with a game of catch-and-fall, which creates the sensation of taking off and flying. This feeling of departure feels rather uncomfortable at first, but with multiple listens, the childlike melodies intertwine with one another giving the opus a certain cohesion. Haji and Natsue's voices mix perfectly, whispering an elusive fantasy into the listener's ears, which only makes sense if nobody understands it. You might expect an explosion, the bouquet with the petals flying, but that's not counting on the trio's mischievousness and awareness that one has to carefully manage the blooming in order to savor all its glory. Kawabata Makoto has perfectly measured the balance provided by the majestic, yet cunning trio, which knows how to leave the necessary space between two notes so they can fully exist, before bursting into the fury of "Hets". squimaoto: Hagi (g.vo), Natsue (g.vo), Akemi (dr). "Their music is so unique, humble like typical old-fashioned Japanese women, but also strong like typical recently Japanese women... " --Makoto Kawabata

MOODOID Reptile 12" + CD
Moodoïd is a psychedelic rock band founded in 2013 by Pablo Padovani, the project's leader and mastermind. Nicknamed the "new prodigy of French pop music", Pablo wrote and conceived a first very peculiar, pop and psychedelic album. They notably toured with Phoenix and played with renowned musician and producer Damon Albarn. Soaked in psychedelic pop and world music, the songs written by Pablo Padovani evoke Os Mutantes' tropicalism, Connan Mockasin's dreamy atmospheres, and Gong's progressive liberties. Supported by French lyrics, Moodoïd blasts genres, times, and horizons. Reptile is a natural evolution of the project towards a more modern sound, without losing its so peculiar synthetic and funky touch. The very composition of the tracks clearly indicated the need for studio musicians, in order to develop every disco/funk aspect of the record. The recording of the album happened in two sessions: first, Pablo set up the band and directed their recording (with experimented sound engineer Yann Arnaud), and then this "live" matter was reworked and integrated to Pierre Rousseau's more electronic production. The track "Reptile" is a new proof of Moodoïd's sloughing. Only passion and lust have resisted the project's solitary soul Pablo Padovani's metamorphosis. Moodoïd changes skin, but skins keep on caressing. More erotic than toxic, Moodoïd's new venom progresses through funky guitar and synthetic arpeggios, with Pierre Rousseau and Pablo's producing, and David Wrench (The XX, Hot Chip, LA Priest) mixing. Includes CD.

BIOSPHERE Shenzhou 3LP
Triple LP version. Biophon present a reissue of Biosphere's Shenzhou, originally released by Touch in 2002. This expanded reissue includes a bonus album The Samphire Tower. Paul Cooper, of Pitchfork, on the album: "Shenzhou, aside from being the name of the Chinese manned-spaceflight vehicles, means 'magic vessel', and I can't imagine a more apt description for Geir Jenssen's latest excursion into ambient deep listening. . . . Jenssen again relies on found sound as source material for Shenzhou, but this time, the found sound is old vinyl recordings of the orchestral works of French Impressionist composer and ambient precursor, Claude Debussy. Jenssen lifts fragments of these scratched records in a similar manner as he did for Cirque's 'Black Lamb Grey Falcon' and 'Iberia Eterea'. The ten tracks (out of the dozen on the album) that follow this model all begin as a barely audible hum, like a small electrical transformer, out of which the dust-dappled loops of Debussy's woodwind, brass, and strings emerge, condense, and fade out into pink noise rustles. Unlike Steve Reich's phase pieces or Brian Eno's Discreet Music, though, Jenssen doesn't set his loops against each other to produce juxtapositions and piquant dissonance; he uses them to describe imagined terrain, at first glance monotonously flat and barren, but on concentration, replete with minute detailing. The overall effect of these pieces is a sense of immensity. The orchestral loops sound distant, abandoned in a vast wilderness, and strenuously battling against Arctic winds. Jenssen sets the listener down in this wilderness as an aloof observer, a witness to the music's futile struggles against entropic forces. The two tracks not derived from Debussy share the same hypnotic aesthetic. The brief interlude 'Bose-Einstein Condension' is a loop of piano chords lolloping in search of coherence, while 'Gravity Assist' is a longer voyage into woofer-quaking low-frequency manipulation, bell-like drones, and contrails of subdued noise. I can't help but feel that these tracks fit awkwardly and break up the conceptual flow of the album. This, however, is a minor quibble given the power of this music. Shenzhou is unquestionably a magic vessel, but one that reveals its enchantment only to those who pay close attention."

KASTEL, SILVIA Air Lows LP
Air Lows is the debut solo album by Silvia Kastel. The Italian artist has been a fixture of the underground since her precocious teens, clocking up many miles in Control Unit with Ninni Morgia, including collaborations with the likes of Smegma, Factrix, Gary Smith, Aki Onda, and Gate (Michael Morley of The Dead C). Both solo and in her work with others, Kastel has explored the outer limits and inner workings of no wave, industrial, dub, extreme electronics, free rock, and improvisation. Air Lows is both her fullest and most refined offering to date, a work of vivid, isolationist electronics which draws deeply on her past experience but breaks new ground. Prompted by a late-flowering interest in techno and club music, Kastel sought to create something which combines a steady rhythmic pulse with the otherworldly sonorities of musique concrete, and avant-garde synth sounds inspired by Japanese minimalism and techno-pop (Haruomi Hosono's Philharmony (1982) being a particular favouite). The formal artifice of muzak/elevator music, the intros and outros of generic popular songs, the extreme light-heavy contrasts of jungle, the creative sampling of hardcore, and the very "human" synths in the jazz of Herbie Hancock's Sextant (1973) and Sun Ra: all were touchstones for Air Lows' conception and composition, and all strains of music addressing -- or complicating -- the relationship between the human and the technological. Though used sparingly, Kastel's voice remains her key instrument, whether subject to dissociative digital manipulations as on "Bruell", delivering matter-of-fact spoken monologues, or providing splashes of pure tonal color. Recorded between her expansive Italy studio and a more compact, ersatz set-up in Berlin, Air Lows gradually takes on some of the character of the German capital: you can hear the wide streets and uninhabited spaces, the seep-age of never-ending nightlife, the loneliness. Air Lows is The Wizard of Oz in reverse: the glorious technicolor J-pop deconstructions of its first half leading inexorably to the icy noir of "Spiderwebs" and "Concrete Void". These later tracks are reminiscent of 2015's magnificent 39 12", Kastel in the role of numbed, nihilistic chanteuse stalking dank, murky tunnels of reverb and sub-bass. But in fact there is contradiction and emotional ambiguity to Air Lows from the outset, and throughout -- a sense of both infinite space and acute claustrophobia; energy and inertia; fluency and restraint.

Chroma summons forth a soundscape of stellar post trance, electro magma. As dense as it is deft. The ten gurgling innards effortlessly spewed out here rank it alongside other Moltenadelic CO-2 snuffers such as Ilitch's Periodik Mindtrouble (1978) or Junji Hirose + Yoshihide Otomo's Silanganan Ingay (1989). Lush, foreboding, and fantastical, Chroma's pocket universe of seductive dread could spook the sheen right off've Moebius's Airtight Garage and there ain't a damn thing Major Grubert or Jerry Cornelius is gonna do about it. VONO Dinner Fur 2 CD
Bureau B present a reissue of Vono's debut album Dinner Für 2, originally released in 1982. Among the lesser known dark-electro/post-punk bands of the early 1980s, the Berlin duo Vono really stood out. The radical nature of their music, the cold sound and sparse lyrics -- Vono were arguably on a par with the more prominent ambassadors of the genres (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, Liaisons Dangereuses, etc.). Extreme even for the early eighties, their minimalism was constructed purely on synthesizers and heavy on bass. With lyrics to match, their debut album Dinner Für 2 was unique. Auspicious beginnings for Vono back in 1982 offered no warning that the name would later fade into relative obscurity. Two brothers, Norbert and Volker Schultze, founded the project in the late seventies. They generated a substantial following in the cooler clubs of Berlin, playing a huge number of notoriously loud gigs. It was their producer Stephan Kaske who pointed them in the direction of legendary German label Sky Records (home to seminal albums by Cluster, Brian Eno, Michael Rother, Conrad Schnitzler, Asmus Tietchens, etc.). Kaske had released records of his own on the label, under the name of Mythos. Sales of Vono's debut album vastly exceeded expectations, to the satisfaction of the musicians and the label. Nevertheless, the brothers chose to embellish the sound of their sophomore work with guitar and drums, moving closer towards rock music. Given its consistently minimalist ethos, Dinner Für 2 is surprisingly varied. Dark and danceable electro-pop dominates, but spherical sounds and gentler moments are also there to be found. The songs are, for the most part, built on a framework of just one or two recurring bass patterns or melodies, coupled with lyrics which are barked rather than sung and delivered with Teutonic rolled "R"s and exaggeratedly uttered final syllables. Some tracks have a rather Dadaistic flavor, featuring a single line like "Tief Im Dschungel Sitzt Ein Haifisch" (deep in the jungle, a shark lurks) or numbers shouted into the microphone, as on "Lottozahlen" (lottery numbers). An occasional instrumental track offers some light relief. What a shame that Vono did not stick to their radical concept. At least this gem of electronic music can now be presented to a wider audience.

VATH, SVEN In the Mix: The Sound of the 18th Season 2CD
Sven Väth tunes into The Sound of the 18th Season on a gentle note with Willow. A little later, the groove becomes more insistent and Madrid's Eduardo De La Calle provides a pulsating bassline and crackling hi-hats. With the daring sing-a-long of Basti Grub, Väth shows his playful side, which is superseded by the nonchalance and coolness of Eddie Fowlkes and singer Na Dee. With Fort Romeau, processed voices spread a trippy, unreal vibe. Moments later, Väth blends a special bassline into the mix, composed by Chez Damier. Ricardo Villalobos's casual, eye-opening grooves appear to be the ideal counterbalance to Damier's unbounded bassline, together forming Villa H2H. Väth senses a hidden relation between Villalobos and John Tejada's improbable, space-grabbing synthesizer sounds. With DJ Slyngshot, the mix becomes more physical and raw. But Väth does not abandon the subtlety of the mix. With Paul, he immerses himself deeper into iridescent, psychedelic dynamics. With his unique blend of joy and serenity, Isolée expresses the magic of electronic dance in one perfect track. The spacey, retro-futuristic sounds of KiNK sets a first high point and Väth provides a breather with Adam Port & Stereo MC's track. "Avalon" by &Me puts a hymn-like vocal and unbridled tribal percussions on top of a floating house groove. Patrice Baumel absorbs this pathos and creates a sonic vastness. With Fideles, Väth resolves this tension in loose synth-sounds. The ghostly "On the Way" by Gaiser feels like a message from a surreal world. The crazy, tempestuous synths of Aubrey, gives an impression of 18th Season's bold endgame. Only moments later, Väth pushes the listener a step further with an immediate Chicago-house-stomper from Slam. With "Electric Rescue", Väth grants the listener a sense of safety and relief. Väth tunes into the finale with ROD's "Hor" and madness erupts out of raw energy on the dancefloor. With Secret Cinema & Egbert, Väth lingers for a moment to reach a new climax in the unlikely mix of sirens and shouts of Peder Mannerfelt & Hodge, which is topped by Rico Puestel with carnivalesque turbulence. Väth plays Barnt's "If She Says She Is A Healer, She Is A Healer", a truly magical number, fusing the mysterious, the remote, and the immediate. Inigo Kennedy's groping, longing sounds suggest a new beginning and with the incredible strings of Paul Nazca, the listener is already in the next chapter of Sven Väth's fabulous journey.

HIVER Air Castles EP 12"
Italian duo Hiver present Air Castles EP. "Elipse" is a stunning four-minute track that nods to avant-garde artists such as Wolfgang Voigt's GAS alias or Brian Eno, as the pair gradually weaves several layers of shining, atmospheric tones before slowly fading into the background. "Air Castles" follows with the tight selection of drums combined with the ebb-and-flow of soaring synths. "Aleutine" is a song that similarly blends Hiver's characteristically ethereal, hazy synths alongside more vibrant analog bleeps. Deep-groover "Leisure" sees Hiver up the tempo through their clever use of percussive elements, sharp synths, and headstrong drums.

YALO, GILI Gili Yalo CD
From his base in Tel Aviv, Gili Yalo is launching a solo career in a new project that combines Ethiopian roots with soul, funk, psychedelic, and jazz music. Yalo, who has collaborated with top music producers Beno Hendler (Balkan Beat Box) and Uri Brauner Kinrot (Boom Pam), incorporates sounds from traditional Ethiopian music into a contemporary music production. The result is an exceptional, rich, vivid melody accompanied by Gili's unique voice with lyrics in both English and Amharic. The music embodies his own personal story, which inspired the rhythm and flow of the whole project. And what a story he has to tell: Operation Moses was the covert evacuation of Ethiopian Jews from Sudan during a famine in 1984. These Ethiopian Jews fled from their native land on foot to refugee camps in Sudan. Together with his family, Gili Yalo made this perilous trip, walked through the desert towards the "Promised Land" and sang to his beloved ones. Gili Yalo's band is made up of five musicians, including guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, and trumpet. An entrancing rhythmic motion is apparent when listening to Gili's music, from the groove, beat and flow, and up to the lyrics, concept and style of the project. Today, Yalo's music gives a new meaning to traditional Ethiopian music. The expression of his story through an advanced music production represents his own personal triumph. Gili Yalo's album combines Ethiopian roots music with a modern touch of jazz and soul. Yalo began writing the songs for his album in 2015 coming from a strong desire to express himself and to send out a message to the world: in order to guide yourself forward you have to carry your roots with you and remember where you came from. Through this album, Yalo has managed to connect his personal history to his current life alongside renowned music producer Uri Brauner Kinrot (Boom Pam) and many talented local musicians who were brought together for this project. Yalo reveals a fresh perspective to Ethiopian culture by using his personal musical influences such as James Brown and Mulatu Astatke to blend the sounds of funk and soul with Ethio-jazz music. The album, like Africa itself, is a rich patchwork of color and rhythm. The sound is influenced by '70s blues, soul, and funk music, with Ethiopian music at the core of the project. Also features Keren Dun.

DELTRON 3030 Deltron 3030: The Instrumentals 2LP
"Deltron 3030 The Instrumentals is the sibling of Deltron 3030's legendary self-titled debut and an experience all its own. Since the record's release in 2000, Deltron 3030 has moved into the pantheon of greatest recordings of all time, of any genre. Del's Deltron Zero persona certainly has much to do with the release's setting in a dystopian future. But beyond that, and beyond the great guest appearances the foundation of that setting is the sonic landscape presented by Dan The Automator. The Instrumentals puts the focus on the mood forged by The Automator's soundscapes which create a listening experience often referred to as cinematic. Long out of print since its initial release in 2001, The Instrumentals return housed in a unique die-cut jacket with a full color obi rounding out the package. The result is a set that's visual appeal compliments the rich soundscape created by Dan The Automator."

EQUIKNOXX Colon Man 2LP
Colón Man is the debut album proper by visionary Jamaican dancehall artists Gavin Blair (Gavsborg) and Jordan Chung (Time Cow) plus their extended crew, aka Equiknoxx -- once again for Demdike Stare's label. Where their widely acclaimed Bird Sound Power (DDS 020CD/LP) primer compilation, issued on DDS in 2016, brought the rest of the world up to speed with the music produced between late '00s and 2015, their first album now brings a 2020 sound into sharp, technoid focus through a baker's dozen steely, heat-seeking riddims galvanized with clinical electronics and a Midas Touch approach to sampling. The record's title, Cólon Man refers to a Jamaican tale (and song) about a mysterious character, whom, like Marcus Garvey, was one of over 100,000 Jamaicans who returned from working in Cólon on completion of the Panama Canal. In context of the album, Gavsborg and Timecow take the story as a metaphorical foundational for a roots and future sound, acknowledging the vital groundwork of previous generations of producers, whilst soundly contextualizing their mutant new advancements of Jamaican dancehall. Recorded between December 2016 and June 2017, the results of Colón Man form a stark, stripped down and conceptually blinding record. In tone and texture, the duo favor far colder, more abstract sounds, crucially lit up with sparingly used samples that lend the record its dissonant, harmonic color and bittersweet hooks, stylishly feeding forward their playfully weird sense of humor into a rugged, nutty, and even noisily imagineered set. Bookended by the gauzy, Detroit-compatible synth looks and acid hall grind of "Kareece Put Some Some Thread In A Zip Lock", and the mesh of Motor City sleekness with Far Eastern strings on "Waterfalls In Ocho Rios", they distill and diversify their bonds in myriad ways across the album. There's a killer dancehall/trap hybrid in the percolate chorales and man trills of "Plantain Porridge", along with the secretive dub-into-dancehall transfusion of Addis Pablo's melodica in the belly rolling "Melodica Badness", while "Ceremonial Eating Dog" and the hyaline designs of "We Miss You Little Joe" -- a tribute to their pal Alty Nunes -- are arguably the most forward Jamaican riddims you'll hear in 2017, and "Enter A Raffle... Win A Falafel" uncannily recalls the clockwork mechanics of Haruomi Hosono's "Alternative 3", from his S-F-X LP (1984). Curated by Jon K and Demdike Stare. RIYL: Lenky, Haruomi Hosono, Errorsmith. Mastered and cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy.

CHOCKY Playtime EP 12"
Chocky returns to Dessous with Playtime EP. "Double Dip" is a chunky, stripped-down vibe, reduced vitals that will slay dancefloors -- a shuffling groove and a cut-up vocal reminiscent of Pepe Bradock. "Organism" is a deep affair -- spacy pads provide the counterbalance to the tough drum track. "Soul Alive" taps into Chocky's clear appreciation for the '90s, with a strong vocal, atmospheric strings, and a loose yet crispy beat. "Playtime (Dub)" is another stormer -- beginning as a driving basement jam but then an unexpected piano riff flips the script and takes things in a welcome jazzy direction.

JAY GLASS DUBS Dubs 2LP
One of the boldest new producers to broach the dub sphere in recent times, Jay Glass Dubs is subject of Dubs, a prime "early years" survey of his work, compiled by Alessio Natalizia (Not Waving) for his Ecstatic label, and released quick at the heels of their ace Trax Test set (ELP 030LP) and Novoline album (ELP 029LP). Written during what Dimitris Papadatos, aka Jay Glass Dubs, describes as "an adventurous and bold period", and holding material variously issued by Hylé Tapes, THRHNDRDSVNTNN, and Seagrave between 2015-2016, the Dubs compilation frames a singular, stripped-down take on classic dub forms, wherein Jay Glass Dubs perceptibly retains the sound's heavy function and mystic qualities, but subtly updates its palette with a range of nods to shoegaze, darkwave synth styles, and weightless dynamics. The results form a sort of ghostly, filleted subtraction of classic dub architecture, all plasmic tones and diaphanous, boneless structures buoyed by an often overwhelming, yet somehow intangible bass presence. Beyond the obvious, thematic ligature that connects the material, which was all recorded within a very short period of time, the artist also suggests there is an underlying, encrypted similarity to the material which is "merely apparent to me", and awaits much closer investigation from keen ears. From Jay's eponymous 2015 debut for Hylé tapes, listeners will encounter the heaving smudge of "Definition Dub", the serpentine, Coil-like digital delays of "Grumpy Dub", and a grime drone drill "Depression Dub". Off the II tape for THRHNDRDSVNTNN (2016) comes the darkwave synths and militant step of "Magazine Dub" recalling a gauzier Equiknoxx production, next to the bass-less scudder, "Detrimental Dub" and the shoegazing bloom of "Daria Dub", while his III tape (2016) tees-up some abyssal highlights in the vertiginous "Hilton Dub", the melancholy, Basic Channel-scoped scale of "Sieben Dub", and the HTRK-eaque starkness of "Everlasting Dub". Exclusive to the set is "Perfumed Dub", recorded in 2017 and pointing to vast, layered, atmospheric directions for a timeless project which is only just hitting its stride. Recorded in Athens, Berlin and Paris between 2015-2017. First time on vinyl for all the material included. Cut by CGB at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

GOLDSTON, LORI Music For Etudes N11 Runway Show 12"
With 2017 gradually facing a new beginning and end, Ed Banger Records and Études present an exclusive record with cellist Lori Goldston that accompanies these very moments of gentle melancholia. While the Seattle-based musician has spent a life performing and touring with some of history's most iconic bands -- such as Nirvana and David Byrne -- the course of Goldston's career has also mapped itself around other memorable peculiarities. Like the very undoing of her classical education. "Detraining" has allowed Goldston to access and intersect multiple layers within the landscape of music, eventually leading to compositions that embody gestural moments of past and future. And everything that seems to reside between. Originally performed live at Études AW17 show in Paris, Lori Goldston's record evokes ideas of timelessness whose intention isn't about consciously hauling in its audience's presence but rather implementing a type of absence that softly sedates into a space of continuation. There's a process, unfolding and somehow forever changing; motionlessly.

TRANSCENDENCE ORCHESTRA, THE Modern Methods For Ancient Rituals 2LP
The title of the debut album from The Transcendence Orchestra outlines the modus operandi of this pairing of Anthony Child and Daniel Bean. Recorded in a remote English rural setting over a period of 24 hours, this is an apt location for a recording that eschews time and space in favor of methodological displacement and deep psychological navigation. Modern Methods For Ancient Rituals is an experiment in acoustic and synthetic symbiosis which is deeply influenced by the atmosphere and acoustics of the rural location of Cats Abbey resulting in a set of recordings which can aid to the transformation of consciousness. Deploying a range of ancient and modern instruments and effects, including Buchla Music Easel, harmonium, shruti box, bass guitar, hurdy gurdy, Electro Harmonix 45000, Strymon Blue Sky, and Roland RE 101 Space Echo, among others, Child and Bean conjure an audio experience which encapsulates elements of drone, trance, pulse, rhythm, and melody, subtly shifting all into a psychologically penetrating experience beyond the aesthetic and into the comforting unknown. Front cover image by Ali Wade; Back cover image by Cathrin Queins; Design by SOMA. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin, 2017.

CAUSA SUI Vibraciones Doradas CD
Each of these four epic tracks is a testament to the fact that Causa Sui have carved out a singular niche for themselves, where vintage Sabbath-isms are filtered through a distinctively post-modern ethos. Causa Sui's brand of rock conveys everything that's so great about fuzzed-out heaviness, yet there's something about it that makes the listening experience far from trivial. In stark contrast to the standards of the stoner/doom scenes, Causa Sui manage to be weighty and peaceful at the same; forceful, yet vulnerable, ecstatic yet thoughtful. On opener "The Drop", the band drives a thick John Bonham groove into Can-esque freeform ecstasy before liquefying the groove into a warm ocean of shoegaze-y guitars and wistful synths. On 11-minute centerpiece "El Fuego", they create a sonic river that seems be channeling Popol Vuh as much as Palm Desert stoner rock. And the closing title track can best be described as sounding like that Sonic Youth sludge-metal record that never was.

BREWSTER, BILL Tribal Rites Part 1 2LP
Part one of two double LP versions. Tribal Rites is a musical autobiography of sorts from one of dance music's most dedicated historians, Bill Brewster. The compilation takes its listeners on a personal journey through Bill's 36-year long involvement in the music industry. Whether running DMC's New York offices or labels including Twisted UK and Forensic, being one of Fabric's original residents, or writing (with Frank Broughton) probably the definitive overview of DJ culture, Bill's fingerprints can be found all over dance music's past few decades. Tribal Rites isn't just a "House & Disco Greatest Hits", it's the soundtrack to a life spent at the coalface of record collecting, of early mornings at car boot sales, and late nights logged onto Discogs. Split into three sections, the compilation begins in the post-punk period, and explores the influence of dub on bands like Urang Otan, General Strike, and The Raincoats. The second section takes you into that mish-mash of sounds and styles best described as "Balearic" where the likes of Bobbie Gentry and Final Edition can happily co-exist and a country and western cover of Hall & Oates "I Can't Go For That" seems obvious. The final section showcases what a broad church house music is, accommodating the spiritual yearnings of Mother Tongue and the precision tooled productions of Basic Channel's Maurizio. Tribal Rites is a vital reminder that there's a lot more to DJing than downloading the latest Beatport chart and waving your hands in the air. Presented as a triple CD set (ESK 508743) or over two double LP sets (ESK 508718 and ESK 508719).Double LP Part 1 features: Latin Breed, Gaffa, Little Reuben, Peter Accident, General Crook, Bill Brewster, Motion, Deborah & The Puerto Ricans, Bobbie Gentry, Surprize, Curtis Green, Reggae Clinic 65, Urang Otan, and P!off?.

LORDS OF THYME The Future of Things Past LP
"I have learned over the years that when Nigel Cross (founder of Bucketfull of Brains fanzine and the Shagrat label) speaks, it's worth paying attention. Thus, when he began telling us about this great UK quartet, we sat up straight. His descriptions of their action, name-checking Joe Boyd's Witchseason Productions, Shelagh McDonald's debut LP and much else inspired unbridled longing. The Lords cut a 7" and a couple of CDs for the elusive Sunstone label, but Nigel managed to get them to agree to putting together this odds 'n sods collection for American consumption. The process of getting this record together ran into every mess you can imagine (and several you never could), but now it's in hand, and I think we can all murmur approval. With gorgeous cover art by legendary British psychedelicist, John Hurford and fine liner notes by Nick West (current editor of Bucketfull), The Future of Things Past is an extremely hep sampling of work by this wonderful quartet. The first track is a blazer, on which the band backs legendary US folk singer, Bonnie Dobson (who wrote 'Morning Dew') for a cover of 'Hares On The Mountain.' This trad song was covered by Shirley Collins and Davey Graham on Folk Roots, New Routes (1964) and was cut for a Shirley tribute set. Blazing like prime era Pentangle, the Lords are off to a stunning start. From there they mix live tunes, a few tracks from their EP, and other tunes into a sweet and splendid blend. The cover of 'Jerry The Mule' (originally by Josh White) is a masterpiece of American Corn Pone. 'Moment To Moment' sounds like top shelf Brinsley Schwarz at their Bandsiest. And much of the rest swings in a way that reminds me of early Pentangle at their peak. The way the Lords mix foreground folk moves with jazzy rhythms certainly calls that band to mind and, as Nigel suggested, this is all woven into a production sound redolent of Joe Boyd's touch. In all, The Future of Things Past is a killer intro to a band from whom we are hoping to hear much more. If you can't dig it, I question your ability to actually dig." --Byron Coley, 2017 Edition of 400.

VIEWER True Friend Record LP
"There can be no denying that Shannon and Beverly Ketch are as dedicated a pair of freaks as you'll run into in a month of Sundays. Indefatigable supporters of the Western Mass sub-underground, they've done backwoods music festivals, run a DIY club and gallery, and make music that emerges straight from the earth on which they live. Previous ensembles include Bunwinkies, Jow Jow, and many more, but Viewer is (at least as of this recording) a totally homegrown duo project. The music is quiet throughout, but manifests itself in a wide variety of ways. There are lightly surging tracks where Bev's vocals and the mood recall Kendra Smith's work with the Guild of Temporal Adventurers (1992). There are semi-whacked keyboard instrumentals that sound like a dub-ready version of Tracey Trance. Shannon sings some deeply tranced & Barrett-oid folk-psych. There's banjo blues and campfire songfest material and spoken directions on how to find roads less traveled of all sorts. True Friend Record is haunting and rewarding set of tunes. Lit by blazing stones." --Byron Coley, 2017 Edition of 200.

MEADOW HOUSE This Should Not Be Happening LP
"I first heard of Dan Wilson (the fellow behind Meadow House, Radionics Radio and a quarter of post-electronics quartet Oscillatorial Binnage) back in 2005 when a friend turned me on to his brilliant radio programs on London's Resonance 104.4 FM. These shows chronicle the misadventures of a hermetic renaissance man who leaves cassettes full of his home recorded 'songs' scattered around the city like litter (a practice known as 'tape dropping'). You might find such a tape wrapped in a suicide note, or on a toilet seat in a public restroom or the floor of a subway train. Wilson's compositions from this period, which were performed on homemade instruments, were usually angst-ridden affairs, extremely bleak. When I was asked to assemble a record from 60-plus unreleased Meadow House songs, I was struggling with my own depression. So naturally I gravitated towards his darker songs, of which there were plenty. Sometimes they're filled with an almost manic exuberance, but the faint of heart should exercise caution... there is no happy ending." --Joey Pizza Slice, 2017

TILLMANS, WOLFGANG Hamburg Sud / Nee IYaow Eow Eow CD/BOOK
The CD publication is being released as part of the Wolfgang Tillmans's "There were 30 years between 1943 and 1973. 30 years from 1973 was the year 2003" exhibition, which is being held at the Kunstverein in Hamburg in fall 2017. Wolfgang Tillmans has devised a 35-minute sound installation as part of the exhibition. The installation takes the exhibition's inner-city context as its starting point, and operates in conjunction with numerous photographs (from a variety of Tillmans' s work phases) and video works to transform the space into a single cinematic whole. The Kunstverein in Hamburg is now releasing the 35-minute sound work Hamburg Süd / Nee IYaow Eow Eow as a CD, accompanied by a 48-page booklet that features exhibition views photographed and designed by Wolfgang Tillmans. Electronic manipulations of Tillmans's own voice, made to sound alternately choral, guttural, and absurd, are mixed with a kind of sung evocation of the four directions of the compass -- to which the exhibition hall is almost exactly aligned. To provide this counterpart voice, Tillmans invited the Hamburg-born and internationally renowned singer Billie Ray Martin. The alternating singing styles are embedded within long silent pauses, when visitors can hear noise from the two routes of traffic between which the Kunstverein is located: the cluster of platforms at Hamburg's central railway station, and Klosterwall, one of the city's main thoroughfares. Through the interplay of screeching railway lines, traffic noise, the reverberation of the immediate environment, word play, and voice explorations, Tillmans uses the sound work to react to aspects specific to the exhibition room at the Kunstverein in Hamburg: you can hear the city, but do not see it. In Further Listening, the second part of the CD, Tillmans presents further experimental solo pieces, collaborations, and two works that were previously released in 2016 (now available for the first time on CD): 2016 / 1986 EP (FRAGILE 001EP), Tillmans's first release, and Device Control EP (FRAGILE 003EP), which first came to public attention in 2016 when a full-length version of the song appeared as a guest contribution on Endless, a visual album by the US R&B musician Frank Ocean. 48-page exhibition booklet designed by Wolfgang Tillmans.

LUSSI, MARTINA Selected Ambient LP
The material on Martina Lussi's Selected Ambient oscillates between electroacoustic composition, sound art, and live performance. The pieces are named after precious gemstones, all of which are traditionally ascribed with special powers. In using these names, the artist seems to refer to the esoteric roots of the genre invoked by the LP's title. The compositions, however, resist the genre's characteristically naïve re-enchantment of the world and distrust holistic esotericism's promise of healing and restoration. Instead, they are defined much more by an interest in affective uncertainties. The gemstones don't want to affect or influence -- they simply want to exist as witnesses of/to the ultimately incommensurable reality that lives beyond our own horizon. Lussi holds a Master of Arts in Contemporary Arts Practice. Lussi has performed work between the disciplines of sound art and music performance at places like LUFF (Lausanne Underground Film Festival) and the festival Oto Nove Swiss at London's Café Oto. 180 gram vinyl.

GONER Yogascum LP
For over two decades now, Martin Maischein has dedicated himself to all things adventurous on labels such as Editions Mego, Force Inc., or Position Chrome. In 2017, Maischein released Yogascum as a small-run cassette release on Hospital Productions under his Goner moniker. This re-release marks Yogascum's first time on vinyl. Having received a grant by the Musicboard Berlin, he developed an audio-visual show around the three tracks at the core of Yogascum, all of which feature instruments and sounds previously unheard in his work. Cellist Unter Lala weaves her signature screeches into the pulsating drones of "YS- 1" and "YS-3", zK member Mark Godwin on "YS-2" injects the subtle influence of a band whose records he has been working on as a mastering engineer, Coil. While the title of Yogascum is a tongue-in-cheek riff on one of Maischein's favorite pastimes, it can indeed be taken at face value: The newest of the three core pieces, "YS-1", is in fact meant to support a slow and focused breathing rhythm. Built around Unter Lala's evocative sustained notes, it harkens back to the cultural origins of drone music. While "YS-2" is based on an elegiac industrial rhythm, "YS-3" sees Unter Lala and Maischein opting for a more abrasive approach. "Endtitle", the credit music for the audio-visual show built around the three compositions, comes as a wake-up call. It also serves as a firm reminder that Maischein hasn't forgotten about his own roots in IDM-tinged electronica. 180 gram vinyl.

FINBERG, LARS Moonlight Over Bakersfield CD
"Deep breath: It's been nearly 20 years of high marks for Mr. Lars Aldric Finberg, shocking as that calculation may be to make. Whether a basher in A-Frames and Thee Oh Sees, secret weapon of Wounded Lion, architect of Puberty and administrator of The Intelligence, his whirlwind presence has been a reliable one; that of an artist whom people look for and look toward. With outlets as varied (be they casual or all-consuming) as this, what, oh what, then prompted the emergence of a solo offering? In truth, In The Red's outta-nowhere green-lighting of the concept sent Finberg's brain bubbling toward Moonlight Over Bakersfield, a statement of entirely his own concoction... A truly swirling step from a guy who's always movin' diagonally. Followers of Finberg's recording history will immediately detect a plume of confidence around this album, an air that each successive offering has inched toward but now, at long last, has taken full bloom. It's legitimately wonderful to witness Finberg ordering off the top shelf across every aspect of the album, recognizing this as a collection of experiments and bangers deserving of such treatment. This assuredness carries over thematically, as he tackles both personal and political obsessions with equal honesty and sophistication. The favors called in for this occasion bolster the offering as a whole. Frequent collaborators now stew with notable heavies from La Luz and Melvins / Big Business, creating Finberg's Whole New Sound. The great Mikal Cronin even guests on sax, offering sophisticated bleat as needed. Ty Segall serves as Finberg's main ally though, both at the controls and in performance. Previous valiant attempts aside, Moonlight Over Bakersfield marks Segall's first truly great achievement as producer / engineer, as if a partnership with Finberg would result in anything less." --Mitch Cardwell

VIKTOR, KNUD Ambiances / Images 2LP
Institut for Dansk Lydarkæologi present a reissue that documents Knud Viktor's only two releases on record -- Images and Ambiances -- both released in 1972 on the French label L'Oiseau Musicien. These records have long been out of print and are hereby made available again, gathering the two separate albums on this double-release. The utmost care has gone into creating a reproduction that is as faithful as possible to the original works. These have been transferred from the original analog master tapes and have not been remastered to any other extent than to prepare them for the vinyl reproduction. Thus, Knud Viktor's pieces appear with the same degree of tape hiss, hum, and other "artifacts" related to his aesthetics, compositional process, and tools. Knud Viktor (1924-2013, born in Copenhagen) was a Danish recordist and sound artist. Viktor was a pioneer of phonography and sound ecology. Formerly a painter but also a photographer and a film maker, Viktor wanted to picture the landscape by capturing the impact of the intense light and sounds upon animals. He spent most of his life trying to capture the tiny sound of animals and the sound of erosion on the rocks of Régalon (Lubéron, France) where he lived for almost 40 years. Viktor considered the rural landscape of Lubéron as an open territory with its own idiosyncratic acoustic signature. Viktor's methodology of work involved long periods of deep listening before placing his microphones at the right point of ear. Knud on his process: "I don't pretend to make music, even if what I hear in nature is produced by forces that seek harmony. I see what I do as a continuation of the painting, surveying sounds that organizes sonic intensities most unattendedly, contrastingly, modulated, and dissonant. I try to create an enhanced sensation via the sounds, the air, the light, the wind, the rain, the rocks, the vegetation, the smells of Lubéron." Transfer from analog master tapes by Jean C. Roché. Edition of 300.

MANKUNKU QUARTET Yakhal' Inkomo CD
Jazzman Records present a reissue of Mankunku Quartet's Yakhal' Inkomo, originally released in 1968. Saxophonist Winston 'Mankunku' Ngozi's 1968 masterpiece Yakhal' Inkomo stands in the front rank of global jazz recordings. A certified jazz classic in South Africa, it has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and has never been out of print. But like so many other crucial South African jazz LPs, it was never released outside the country, and went unheard at the time by the wider world. This reissue is the first time that this truly essential jazz recording has been properly available outside South Africa. Mankunku's masterwork is one of those rare recordings whose audience saw at once that it embodied the spirit of the age. The title, Yakhal' Inkomo, refers to the bellow made by a bull just before it is sacrificed, and the mourning cries of its fellow cattle as they see it struck down. For South African listeners, the reference was understood as a cry against the violence and brutality of the times, and an act of mourning for all those who were suffering under the barbarity of apartheid. Mankunku's horn spoke eloquently and profoundly for and to an oppressed people, and like Coltrane's A Love Supreme (1965), the album became the musical touchstone for a generation. From today's historical vantage point, Yakhal' Inkomo appears as not just an indispensable lost element of the international jazz canon, but as one of the towering cultural documents of its time. This trail-blazing release allows Mankunku's classic work to gain its deserved place on the international stage. This release marks the 25th release in Jazzman Records' celebrated Holy Grail Series. Fully licensed, and packaged with a new sleeve note by Francis Gooding and previously unpublished photographs from the Basil Breakey archive.

RICHARD FROM MILWAUKEE Break Free + Clear Water 12"
Unsurprisingly, Richard Galling, does indeed hail from Milwaukee, and he has been releasing disco-inspired jams since about 2012. His latest offering is this single that features two original tracks and some remixes too. "303" features the eponymous bass machine all over this deep, arpeggio-heavy tech-disco jam. "Organ" swaps the 303 for a classic Robin S-style house organ, and Prophet adds some big room bass. Also included is a Prophet version of "Clear Water", a real late '80s, Shep Pettibone-style, Latin house joint. Luke Solomon's "Body Edit" is absolute dancefloor heat.

BLACKDOWN These Moments LP
Keysound Recordings present a weightless album from label boss Blackdown. Those Moments is his first solo LP, features fellow Margins Music (LDN 014CD, 2009) contributors Trim, Dusk, and Farrah and, like the imprint's Rollage sub series, is centered at 130 bpm. Each of the tracks is a distillation of a fleeting moment. The tracks and LP itself are short and constrained, relying on only voices, synths, and sub bass. The album came about in a quick intense burst and many of the tracks represent snapshots of brief instances -- a bitter-sweet moment of inflection, a moment of positivity, digital over-stimulation, awe, loss, intensity, anger, nostalgia, regret, honesty, relief, and joy.

PERALA, ALEKSI LF RMX 004 12"
On the latest installment of his remix series, Len Faki tackles two compositions from Aleksi Perälä, both of which feature the Finnish artist's renowned musical tuning system, dubbed "The Colundi Sequence". Both edits build on the originals' deeply hypnotizing synthesizer sequences while adding some extra punch and arrangement tweaks in order to turn them into proper dancefloor weapons. A straightforward bleep affair, the "Hardspace Mix" of "GBBVT1337152" underlines its simple yet utterly effective beauty. In contrast, "UK74R1409047" is a moody and mystical ride under the night sky, whose enchanted vibe Faki carefully retains.

VA Duomo Sounds Ltd: Nigerian '80s Disco Music To Move Your Soul 2LP
Double LP version. In the late '70s, the thrust of mainstream music had changed from the indigenous highlife to a more international funky disco sound. Keyboards and drum machines were the key components of the new sound. The implications on sales was real as names like Bunny Mack, Chris Okotie, Christy Essien, and Jide Obi replaced Osita Osadebe and the Oriental Brothers on the charts. It was in this effervescent climate that Duomo Sounds Ltd was established by Humphrey Aniakor, a business man with no prior investment in the industry. It was simply the in-thing for a young affluent businessman. The name suggested European sophistication, modernity and a little abstraction. D U O M O Sounds, the kids loved it. The first release was Bassey Black's Someone To Love which sold over a 100,000 copies, a big hit at the time. The success of the album attracted several artists the most influential of which was Mike Umoh. He aimed for the pop market with accessible, funky arrangements. However his affinity for funk and disco has made him a reference for collectors worldwide. His LP entitled, Honey, Honey was the label's second release and his most successful album. He also produced the label's 19th release, Bindiga's No More Starvation, an Afro-boogie funk masterpiece. The album in its original format is very sought after by collectors and DJs and changes hands for huge sums. It's been described by many as cosmic funk at its finest. Christy Ogbah's disco soul/highlife records on Duomo are also very highly sought after. This new Livingstone Studio release presents the best of Duomo Sounds Ltd. for the first time. Features Christy Ogbah, Johnny O, Mike Umoh, Bindiga, Bassey Black and The Natty Messiah, Godfrey Odili, and Eunice Mokus Arimoku. Liner notes by Nigerian Music expert Uchenna Ikkone; Includes previously unpublished photos.

VA Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s Vol. 1 2LP
Double LP version. Gatefold sleeve. A few years ago the people behind Mayway Records purchased a huge collection of CDs at the Belgian public service broadcaster VRT. In one fell swoop, this batch of CDs gave an extensive overview of the Belgian music landscape between roughly 1990 and 2010. Mayway Records decided to launch the Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s compilation series, collecting obscure Belgian tracks of superior quality dating back to that specific period: forgotten singles, B-sides, album tracks, and demos. In the late '80s and early '90s, home-grown Belgian talent and quality was starting to make some serious waves on the international scene, turning Belgian music into a hallmark of quality. dEUS paved the way for many other Belgian bands so naturally they had to be included on Vol. 1 of Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s: B-side "My Wife Jan", with a killer riff, is a hidden gem. Other names that will ring a bell include Wizards Of Ooze (vocals by Zap Mama's Sabine Kabongo), Elisa Waut (previously unreleased track from 1999), and Daan and Herman Gillis (inventor of the Sherman Filterbank) with their electropop project Volt (1994). Still, these established artists are just the tip of the iceberg. Wonderful rock songs by Two Russian Cowboys (risen from the ashes of Ugly Papas), SeXmachines (with Danny Mommens from Vive La Fête and dEUS) and tracks by Walloon bands Monsoon and Starving. The more electronic contributions by Nid & Sancy (sounds like early Chemical Brothers), Airlock, and de portables' nine-minute synth-post-rock masterpiece "Haut Gay" also ooze international class. Squeaky clean Britpop is served up by The Beautiful Babies with producer Martin Rushent on backing vocals. Ethereal synthwave by Kolk, while Pop Machine calls to mind the very best of Françoise Hardy and Brigitte Bardot. Peeters & Angst (Aroma Di Amore) and The Same (with Anton Walgrave and Aram Van Ballaert) take more of an arty approach and they do an exemplary job of it. The two closing tracks, Maxon Blewitt's Americana gem "Mexicali" and the very atmospheric "Psychologica" by Gèsman, will rank among the best songs you've never heard. In addition to a careful track selection, no effort was spared in terms of visuals: the cover photo is courtesy of Magnum photographer Harry Gruyaert. Tim Broothaers (of Zeal Records) is responsible for the overall design. Also features Thou and Prediker. Includes detailed liner notes of each track.

One fine evening in Rotterdam, after witnessing him walking around in a circle with a stick for half-an-hour, Lukas Simonis asked Dominic Robertson (aka Ergo Phizmiz) to join him in a rapid-fire songwriting bonanza. Many songs resulted, tunes about mermaids, mistakes, compost manufacture, celebrity perverts, geometry, and so on. Lukas is a guitar wizard and a king in the world of weirdoes. Dominic is just... a weirdo, but he is England's greatest entertainer, so that's ok. Make way, roll out the red carpet for songs about Satan, sorrows, the woes of the rock n' roll lifestyle, and scorpions, engaging instruments like guitars, drums, flutes, cellos, tubas, and trumpets. So, you might want to know, what kind of music this vortex turned into: Imagine a strangely, brilliant intersection among Wire, R. Stevie Moore, Bonzo Dog Band, and XTC, with quite a bit of ruminating... but a most delightful, kaleidoscopic confection for the ear. CD version includes two bonus tracks; Edition of 500.

VA Cream 25 3CD
"Twenty-five years ago the idea that a club brand would be known around the world, embodied in a simple but instantly recognized logo would have been laughed at. But today Cream is unrivalled as a leading emblem in creating unique clubbing atmospheres for millions of people. Cream has global recognition for doing one thing -- making memories that live with you forever." --Nick Stevenson, Mixmag) Cream 25 aims to bring those memories flooding back with this collection of the biggest Cream classics from 1992-2017 over three CDs. Impeccably selected by the Cream team and Cream resident DJs, past and present, the Cream 25 tracklist reflects Cream's unique approach to electronic music and their ability to blend genre defining highlights with more tantric moments of pure dancefloor genius, bringing the bold and brazen together with the cool and collected. From 1992's Degrees of Motion's Do You Want It Right Now, through to Disciples' On My Mind (2017), Cream 25 will bring back those Cream emotions. MARTIAL CANTEREL Drilling Backwards LP
Onderstroom present a vinyl edition of Martial Canterel's Drilling Backwards, originally released on cassette in 2006. Essential recordings by the minimal synth master of the present. With the staccato surge and somber vocalizing of Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, the distorted synthetic soundscapes of Dirk Ivens's eeriest work, and the industrial strength of The Young Gods, Martial Canterel's earliest outings are a bleak intellectual exercise in the dark and danceable. His music creates a cold atmosphere, and has an ominous melancholy feel to it. The emotional and sometimes dark feel of the album is everything electronic new wave music should be. It's futuristic, robotic, and at the same time, nostalgic. In 2002, Sean McBride began performing at bars, clubs and private parties in Brooklyn, New York, functioning singlehandedly as the pioneer and instigator of what would become a new movement of minimal electronic bands in the United States. Inspired both by the first wave of relatively unknown minimal electronic bands in Northern Europe (a musical genre also often referred to as "minimal synth") and the seminal industrial noise bands such as Throbbing Gristle, SPK, and Cabaret Voltaire. Since then, McBride's bleak intellectual exercises in the dark and danceable have flooded North America and Europe through the frosty airwaves paved by Pieter Schoolwerth's Wierd Records. With an inimitable minimal style merging bright, urgent melodies ornamented and punctuated by the noises of industry and McBride's sonorous, stern vocals, Martial Canterel's earlier releases -- 2011's You Today, 2007's Austerton (OS 022LP) -- have garnered both critical acclaim and a rapidly growing rabid fan base. DEAD FADER Jenny 153 LP
John Cohen, aka Dead Fader, first arrived on Parachute in 2016, with It Works 1 (PAR 010EP) -- a brace of warping, high-energy electronic music compositions that, while largely unclassifiable in genre, maintain a gloriously vibrant, emotive sensibility that owes much to early IDM excursions and the more abstract tenets of Krautrock. That said, the artist cites anything from Kanye West to Bach and back again as informing the decidedly experimental and potentially confounding work. His latest offering for the Milan based label continues to riff on this open-ended mesh of influence to great effect. The new LP, Jenny 153, runs out across nine tracks and operates at the fertile juncture between classical and club music compositional structures, and examines the crossover points between the two disciplines. According to the artist, the work deals with themes of acceptance and an "opening up" emotionally -- and a palpable sense of catharsis runs deep through the recordings. Colorful and undeniably cohesive, in spite of its rhythmic complexity, the recordings present a vital snapshot of the potential space that exists on the periphery of the dance music genre. PRINS THOMAS Prins Thomas 5 CD
After the slightly more conceptual Principe Del Norte album (2016), Prins Thomas's 5 takes two steps forward and one step back, collecting a batch of tracks that were recorded right after Principe Del Norte and in tandem with the Square One album with Bjørn Torske (2017). A "freedom" album of sorts, beyond the slightly misleading album opener "Here Comes The Band", there's a variety in these tracks tracing inspiration from a 35-year (unhealthy) obsession with all things "good music" played enthusiastically. 5 also marks the launch of Prins Thomas's new label, Prins Thomas Musikk. "Here Comes The Band" is very loosely inspired by Bandwagonesque-era Teenage Fanclub (1991). Melodic ideas were hummed into a handheld recorder and specific notes about instrumentation were scribbled down while on holiday in Villajoyosa in Spain and it turned into the little ditty "Villajoyosa". Thomas made "Bronchi Beat" in bed during a rough patch of bronchitis. Heavily influenced by prescription cough medicine. "?????" is partly inspired by a detour into the soundtrack of Prins Thomas's early teens (Paul Hardcastle, Warp 9, Maze, Mtume). "Æ" is another bronchitis-ridden idea. Slow and low is the tempo with a beat originally inspired by Brian Briggs's "AEO" and melodies beamed in from Wally Badarou. "Æ" is the Norwegian pronounciation of the "A" in acid referring to the 303 screeches. "Ø" gives you the impression Prins might be running out of ideas for track titles. "Lunga Strada" took Prins the longest to complete hence the "long road". "London Til Lisboa" was another idea from a trip on a plane with direction steered by Plaid and Pat Metheny. "Å" was initially the final track and then: Prins scrapped idea for the alphabet soup of Principe Del Norte. The track later evolved into what is here. "Venter på Torske" is the final recorded addition to the album. It was made while Prins was waiting for Bjørn Torske to reply on a text message... "Aske Hermansen" is probably as soppy as it gets with me. Prins made this on the road missing his wife and kids, literally putting tears into his computer keyboard. CD version comes in a digipak.

SHABAKA, JAMAIEL The Land Of The Rising Sun 2LP
Roots Vibration present a reissue of Jamaiel Shabaka's The Land Of The Rising Sun, originally released in 1988. Heavy roots reggae album by the avant-jazz horn player. With its unusual jazzy/improvised sonic essays among straight-up heavyweight roots tracks, saying that The Land Of The Rising Sun is an unusual-sounding reggae album is an understatement: after all, who in the reggae world improvised for days on end with Sun Ra? While living for two years near Kingston, Shabaka recorded his only but very personal album, using the studios from friends, including Sugar Minott. Shabaka delivers healing vibes and meditations, bringing an African jazz sound into the Caribbean groove and creating a unique reggae sound topped with conscious and positive lyrics. Before embracing his Caribbean heritage, Jamaiel was a radio DJ at a college radio station in Long Beach, played with jazz drummer Alex Cline and on never-released Sun Ra albums. Growing up with Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane, plus Yoruba and other types of African-Latin-Cuban sounds, Jamaiel started practicing the saxophone, and the clarinet, all the while gravitating towards the more radical sound of Archie Shepp and Byard Lancaster. Shabaka became a radio announcer at the California State University, Long Beach, KLON, now KKJZ (or KJazz) from the early '70s on. For years, the aspiring radio DJ and the master had been exchanging letters, with Sun Ra growing familiar with Jamaiel's skills at the horns. Shabaka went to Philadelphia and ended up playing on at least three never-released, private press Sun Ra albums. In 1976, introduced by Woody "Sonship" Theus, he met avant-garde jazz drummer Alex Cline. From playing regularly together came the idea to turn the live Cline/Shabaka Duo Infinity project into an LP (1977). In the years to follow, Jamaiel would carry his heavy jazz luggage over to the greener pastures -- at least spiritually, if not monetarily -- of reggae. Since the recording of The Land Of The Rising Sun, Jamaiel has been involved in various projects at a school and various cultural centers in the Los Angeles area, mixing traditional teachings and yoga, presenting music and playing flute, and overall being busy as a family man. Recorded and mixed at studios such as Hit City West (LA), Channel One, and Music Mountain (Jamaica). Layout by Jeroen Wille. Includes a bonus track. Remastered by Equus; Comes in a gatefold sleeve; Liner notes by Seb Carayol; Edition of 500.

Founded by Vincent Brijs in Antwerp in 2006, the seven piece interfuse improvised dance music with jazz-fusion, Afro funk, and rare groove. It is freaky, it is trippy and it follows no rules. Belgium has quite a tradition for jazz and funk infused left-field grooves from Marc Moulin's ingenious Placebo, to library funksters Les Chakakas or El Chicles, to the much sampled JJ Band. BRZZVLL follows in a similar tradition. Initially re-working arrangements from jazz greats Herbie Hancock, Eddie Harris, Freddie Hubbard, and Archie Shepp, BRZZVLL eventually began to construct their own forms of free jazz in an attempt to return jazz to its primitive roots based around collective improvisation. Waiho is BRZZVLL at its best: excellent psychedelic jazz-funk in which the band's solid, characteristic sound comes forward. After two inspirational collaborations with poets and 'Nuff Said brothers Anthony Joseph ("Engines") and Amir Sulaiman ("First Let's Dance"), BRZZVLL play the instrumental card. With Waiho, the band express their current cry for solidarity within music as well as their daily lives. Nowadays, music is too often used as an individual consumption product. The band centralize the group experience, both in the creation process and in the interaction with the audience when performing live, by being "in the moment" and lifting the music to a higher level, as one. This way, BRZZVLL go back to the roots of jazz and funk. The non-native electronics and dub effects on the album encourage this heightened mood. The addition of a second drummer provokes an extra percussive layering and virtuosity. The compositions, inspired by surrealism, absurdism, and mysticism, still leave room for improvisation and the collective creation of sound. Get carried away by contagious rhythms and immerse yourself in this delirious trip to a world beyond ours. Picking up numerous plaudits for their contribution to jazz back in Belgium, the band have performed extensively in their home country and have shared the stage with the likes of The Neville Brothers, Young Blood Brass Band, Marcus Miller, and Alice Russell. Comes in four-panel digipak.

CLIP Magnetic Reconnection LP
Clip releases his debut album Magnetic Reconnection on Seeking The Velvet in collaboration Red Bull Music Academy Spain. This arduous and mature production consists of eight tracks that plunge its listeners into a journey full of analog sounds, dark textures, drones, and a futuristic techno. These ingredients are a faithful reflection of the two cities in which the album has been recorded: Berlin and Barcelona. During its 38 minutes, Clip delivers a complete journey in which he consolidates a unique sound and way of composing. Cover art commissioned to the designer and visual artist Viktor Autofocus, one half of the duo Realmente Bravo. This creative project has recently worked alongside Agorazein (led by rapper C.Tangana). This album released under Cora Novoa's project Seeking The Velvet showcases Clip's new haunting sound landscapes, as the RBMA ex-alumni class 2011 (and the second Spanish artist chosen to participate in its international edition) moves forward from the influence of UK house that underlid his previous releases while adding a superbly distant, darker tone that evokes an analog techno futurism. PERMAHORN My Blood Carries My Dreams Away CD
Born out of embers of separation and divorce, Permahorn are a Scottish/Serbian London-based duo who has compiled a selection of brooding, heartfelt songs on this cathartic debut album, My Blood Carries My Dreams Away. This debut plays out like a Nico record covered by Low via the nightmarish vision of David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986). Taking shape over a twelve month period, the duo used music as an escape from what was an emotionally difficult time, offering a sense of relief in the process. The result is one of the best records you're likely to hear in 2017. On the surface, My Blood Carries My Dreams Away is a bleak album tackling themes of desire, obsession, deceit and guilt. Despite this, there are small buds of hope, optimism and a sense that there may be light at the end of the tunnel. Opening with the swaying schizophrenia of the title track: where churning backward loops swirl, accented beautifully by vocals incorporated from 20-year-old tapes recovered by producer Kramer (Bongwater, Galaxie 500, Ween, Daniel Johnston, Low), My Blood Carries My Dreams Away sets the scene from the first note. Inviting the listener on their melancholic journey, the record throws up surprises throughout, from feedback-laden "Radiation" conjuring memories of Pavement, to the wonderfully delivered deadpan vocals on the Nico-inspired "Into The Dreams (Slut)", and the harrowing "Lynch Mob". Comprised of Saint Pauly (guitar, vocals, percussion, knobs) and Jexy Pesic (bass, vocals, drums, switches), the duo were taken under the wing of Shimmy Disc producer Kramer who mixed and mastered their songs at his Noise Miami studio. Impressed with their songwriting ability, Kramer selected 11 tracks from the initial batch of demos and worked with them to create an album to be released on his new Shimmy 500 label. Now, with an incredible debut record complete and the backing of an iconic record label, Permahorn are eager to share their sound with the world. CD version includes a bonus track.

APPARAT Walls 2LP
2017 repress. Now available as a double vinyl version. Walls is the fifth full-length album for Apparat. Despite its title, Walls isn't about dividing lines. Instead, it describes a circle that pulls many elements together into a protected, enclosed space where they jostle and roam free: strings and mallet instruments; rock guitar and gravelly sawtooth synths; stuttering digital percussion and muscular studio drumming. Important guests and collaborators on this record include Telefon Tel Aviv's Josh Eustis, who did the album's final mixdown in Chicago, as well as the talented Raz Ohara, who contributes his smoky vocals. Apparat has melded his genius as a sound designer with his growing songwriting talents to craft songs brimming with ideas, energy, texture, light, color. They are hummable, embraceable, swimmable, possibly edible.

VA The Orb Chronicles (20 Years of Shitkatapult) CD
Orbologists Dr. Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann are in their lab putting together a massive sound worm by hand for the anniversary of Berlin's elite training ground, Shitkatapult. A comprehensive overview of works spanning 20 years of label history; As they often did, the Orb liked to operate right at the convolutions and interfaces between work and quote, between interpretation and punctuation. A fine, easy hour of music from the Orbital of Shitkatapult. Featuring (in mix order): Hamburger dub specialist Fenin opens the show with a darkly ambient hall "Adeto" from Mixes & Maxis, (STRIKE 117CD, 2010) and is immediately layered through with "What Is Paris?" by Bus and Dabrye from Eagles (STRIKE 146LP, 2014). Both tracks blend together like a cut-up for adults into a single track. Next is Phon.O, from his album Burn Down the Town (STRIKE 064LP, 2005) with "Verborg Nie Die 6" and wayward Finn Sami Koivikko with "Erisana" from Kut Pulatin Pt. 3 (STRIKE 028EP, 2002), delivering the most important building blocks of the minimal/tech house side of the label, coming from Cristian Vogel's "Telemorphosis" from the exiled UK artist's latest album, The Assistenz (STRIKE 160CD, 2016). Followed and once again interrupted by Cristian Vogel, from the songs and more section with The Sorry Entertainers's (Judith Juillerat, Khan of Finland, and T.Raumschmiere) "The Only Thing I Know" from Local Jet Set (STRIKE 129CD, 2011), Judith Juillerat's "Vol-au-Vent" from Soliloquy (STRIKE 067CD, 2005), Khan of Finland's "H&M Freedom" from Nicht Nur Sex (STRIKE 162CD/LP, 2017), Cristian Vogel's "Barefoot Agnete" from The Assistenz, T.Raumschmiere's "Nuclear Bedtime Stories", featuring Lilian Hak, from I Tank U (STRIKE 096CD, 2008). A gloomy lightness takes hold and seeps into the depths with Ulli Bomans and Marco Haas, aka Shrubbn!!, and the track "Drunen" from their latest album Europa (STRIKE 161CD/LP, 2016), and misfits like Frank Bretschneider's "Subharchorded Waves" from Komet (2008), Boxtype's "Spin" from Sparkflight (STRIKE 029EP, 2002), Oval's "Kasino" from OvalDNA (STRIKE 134CD, 2012), Sun Electric's "One Dub", Ricardo Villalobos remix and MM Studio counter cut, aka "Toninas" (STRIKE 085EP, 2008), culminating in Thomas Brinkmann's soul center house sache "Pig Peg" from General Eclectics (STRIKE 118CD, 2010). The Orb make for the exit with Apparat's "Not A Number" from Walls (STRIKE 084CD/LP, 2007), Tom Thiel's "Laissez Faire" (STRIKE 125CD, 2011), wrapping things up with the deeper Orb mix of Shrubbn!!'s "Echos" (STRIKE 130EP, 2012). WE LIKE WE Next To The Entire All LP
Next To The Entire All is an astonishing work by Danish experimental sound quartet We Like We, consisting of Katrine Grarup Elbo (violin), Josefine Opsahl (cello), Sara Nigard Rosendal (percussion), and Katinka Fogh Vindelev (voice). Although classically trained, all four share a desire for exploring, experimenting, and shaping a sound of their own, something which is present on this album. Both instrumentation and composition feel glued together with an abundant sense of playfulness and vision. The record starts with the beautiful "I'm Not For More" which sets the tone for the album's ten pieces, hurling you back-and-forth in a whirlwind of intuitive sound and music. Genre-bending as the record can be, it can be seen as somewhat of a contrasting work -- as much northern folk traditions as an avant-classical work in the spirit of György Ligeti and Meredith Monk. "Forest Sketches", as an example, starts with minimal woodblocks and percussive rattling while slow-building violins, cello, and vocals pull themselves in through the unknown before bursting into a Pagan sounding wormhole of screams and looped cellos. The piece ends with minimal vocal soundscapes fading away into almost pure silence. It could be mirrored with a merger of both the opening and closing scene of Kubrick's classic movie 2001 (1968) -- creating the sense of beginning of humanity versus the far future, with abstraction and the unknown. Next To The Entire All is both a mind-bending and grounded piece of work fitting naturally next to other Sonic Pieces releases such as Hauschka and Hildur Gudnadottir's Pan Tone (2011) or Christoph Berg's Conversations (2017), while adding a northern minimalism. A record that is as hard to shake off as it is to describe. Cover with laser-cutting and printed inner sleeve; Includes download code; Edition of 500.

TOTLAND, OTTO A. The Lost CD
The Lost follows and expands on Otto A. Totland's intimate debut solo piano album Pinô from 2014 (SONIC 019CD/LP). Once again several days were spent in Nils Frahm's legendary Durton studio to lay down both composed and improvised pieces of quiet beauty. While mostly residing in a small Norwegian coastal town, Otto has been trying to escape the constant movement towards fast-paced, polluted lives, where it seems like sounds and impressions never stop. The Lost can be seen as a countermovement towards this development -- something genuine and personal. There's a lightness felt while listening, and yet an overwhelming feeling of melancholy and nostalgia captures you through the length of the album. It could be described as pure timelessness captured with the best vintage recording technique available, opening up to a new wider scope and detail while keeping the intimacy as if it would be played right beside you. The humming of the world and the warmth of the piano shines through like a natural accompaniment as they enthrall from beginning to end. Leaves are falling and times are changing. The horizon seems dark. Otto seems to capture both the questions and feelings we have about our surroundings. Not judging them, but easing his listeners into a mindset that feels hopeful. A sort of quiet relief that things might actually work out, no matter how dark it can look. CD version comes in handmade cardboard artwork.

PRAN NATH, PANDIT The Raga Cycle, Palace Theatre, Paris 1972 Vol. 2 2LP
"The raga cycle given by Pandit Pran Nath at the Palace Theater in Paris 1972 was the first time a Master Indian Classical Vocalist had presented three consecutive days of ragas sung at the appropriate times of day, giving the Western audience insight into the characteristics that inform the moods and atmospheres of evening, afternoon, and morning ragas. The recording here is from the Saturday, May 27, 1972 afternoon concert and features Raagini Bheempalasi and Raag Puriya Dhanaashree. This is the Maestro at the very summit of his creative and vocal powers. His inspiration merged with his excitement of being in Paris and added to the uniqueness of these performances. As he guided his ragas at an unhurried pace with a surety and command of the musical language, details emerge in the music so profound that new delights continue to surface. Pandit Pran Nath was born in 1918 in Lahore, India which was to become Pakistan. He was one of the foremost disciples of the legendary singer, Ustad Abdul Waheed Khan, Sahib of Kirana. Khan Sahib was known for his long extended renditions of ragas in the melodic Kirana style, often lasting hours. His knowledge of raga science was unparalleled, allowing him to unveil endless permutations and combinations of phrases. Pandit Pran Nath absorbed this knowledge of raga from his Guru, building on these majestic forms in a unique and inimitable way. Pran Nath's rich vocal quality and imaginative renditions of well-known ragas singled him out as one of the greatest masters in the history of Indian Classical Music. Pan Nath's music is ancient and modern, full of fresh flights of imagination. It is no wonder that his numerous performances in the West attracted devotees and students. Besides La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela, he instructed musicians of the American avant garde, including Jon Hassell, Lee Konitz, Allaudin Mathieu, Charlemagne Palsestine, Sufi Pir, Shabda Kahn and many others. His impact on contemporary music continues to grow." --Terry Riley

COLTRANE, ALICE A Monastic Trio LP
2017 repress. "Born Alice McLeod into a musical Detroit family, Alice Coltrane began playing piano at age seven and later studied with Bud Powell in Paris. Upon returning to the States, she joined vibraphonist Terry Gibbs' group and eventually shared a bill with the John Coltrane Quartet. In 1965 the two wed in Juárez, Mexico, and played alongside one another until her husband's last performance in May, 1967. A Monastic Trio, created in the year following her husband's passing, is Coltrane's first recording as a band leader and features six original compositions. While John's spirit can be felt throughout -- from the song titles ('Ohnedaruth' was his adopted Hindu name) to the personnel (Jimmy Garrison, Rashied Ali, and Pharaoh Sanders were frequent collaborators) -- the album showcases Alice's immense talent for fusing spiritual free-jazz and new-age with classical, Eastern, post-bop and gospel. As the late Amiri Baraka writes, '"I Want to See You" is a monastic piano concerto. With echoes of Europe... it has a solemnity and majesty to it.... Yes, monastic is the word. The piano broods in its earth imagination.'"

COLTRANE, ALICE Universal Consciousness LP
2017 repress. "Originally released on Impulse! in 1971, Universal Consciousness is a major turning point in Alice Coltrane's momentous career. While her previous albums pushed the limits of spiritual free-jazz and featured much of her late husband's band, Universal Consciousness expands the harpist / pianist's compositional palette with organ and strings (working with Ornette Coleman). 'Oh Allah' is the finest example of Coltrane's new direction: tense violins dissolve into sublime organ solos and exquisite brushwork from long-time Mile Davis collaborator Jack DeJohnette. While the title track undulates with a fierce clamor, 'Hare Krishna' showcases Coltrane's uncanny ability for transcendent and slow-paced arrangements. In The Wire's '100 Records That Set the World on Fire,' David Toop writes, '[Universal Consciousness] clearly connects to other dyspeptic jazz traditions -- the organ trio, the soloists with strings -- yet volleys them into outer space, ancient Egypt, the Ganges, the great beyond. The production is astounding, the quality of improvisation is riveting, the string arrangements are apocalyptic rather than saccharine, the balance of turbulence and calm a genuine dialectic that later mystic / exotic post-jazz copped out of pursuing. Her lack of constraint was dimly regarded by adherents of '70s jazz and its masculine orthodoxies, yet Alice deserved better credit for virtuosity, originality, and the sheer will power needed to realized her vision.' This first-time vinyl reissue has been carefully remastered from the original master tapes."

LARES, OSWALDO Musica De Venezuela 1972-81 CD
"After a concert of Kenyan singer Ogoya Nengo in Berlin in 2015 in a pleasant conversation Guillermo Lares told me about his father, Oswaldo Lares, a studied architect who, parallel with his professional activity, began to make field recordings of the traditional and indigenous Venezuelan music from the early 1960s onwards up until today. His search and fascination for finding the musical roots of his country led Oswaldo Lares to visit the rural villages outside Caracas, investigating the many and varied musical cultures of the region and the complex relationship between Venezuelan folk music and its various origins, including the African (mu´sica afrodescendiente). The vast amount of music documents in the form of sound recordings, photographs, and videos accompanied by notes and studies reflect the scope of this entirely self-taught sound engineer's work and represent a passionate documentary, making his work today one of the most comprehensive and systematic that has ever been assembled by a single person in Venezuela. Oswaldo Lares as an ethnomusicologist remained an amateur in the most direct meaning of the word: amare. Whereas most studied ethnomusicologists travel around the world to explore far away continents and foreign cultures, Oswaldo began to devote much of his spare time to the generally overlooked folk traditions that existed right in his very neighborhood. Currently, Guillermo Lares has started to promote his father's work through the Achivolares Foundation, turning it into a living archive that preserves an essential part of Venezuelan musical memory. It is a pleasure and honor of our label TAL to support the invaluable work of Oswaldo and Guillermo Lares with this album." --Stefan Schneider CD version includes eight-page booklet.

TONY, CARO & JOHN All On The First Day CD
Tapete present Tony, Caro, and John's All On The First Day, originally released in 1972. Although they've achieved much of it in recent years, it was never for appreciation that Tony, Caro, and John came to record All On The First Day. The group instead formed serendipitously in the early 1970s through musical appreciation, DIY sensibilities, and an "all goes" mentality. It was here within the walls of the band that they were able to provide homecoming for a group of likeminded friends and cohorts during a rapidly changing cultural climate in London. The first pressing of All On The First Day was a small run of 100 spray-painted copies that one could only find in the small theaters and London flats in which the band performed. The album was self-produced, with group member John behind the board as the technical director to their eclectic and experimental songwriting approach. Tony & Caro's voices are the leading hand through the group's nomadic and shifting song-scape; singing tales of love, youth, and political confusion at a time when the very concept of personal identity was expanding beyond anything it had ever been in prior. While contemporaries such as The Incredible String Band, The Pentangle, and Pearls Before Swine were garnering international recognition and categorization at that time; Tony, Caro, and John evaded being confined to any particular set of expectations or aesthetics. Their songs move fluidly between ballads, protest songs, experimental story-tellings, and free-flowing group jams. Once approached by a label to release their music on a larger scale, they refused due to the labels suggestions for them to move in a specific direction with their music. The ethics and approach of the group pre-dates the DIY and punk ethos of the late '70s, '80s, and '90s, yet hits a similar nerve. It's not surprising that many years after All On The First Day made its journey into the underground a group such as Beach House, which was also formed within a DIY community ethos, covered "Snowdon Song", renaming it "Lovelier Girl" and placing it as a centerpiece on their self-titled album (2006). All On The First Day is a cult-classic; a flagship for any group who want to come together to create a sonic habitat. CD version comes in an edition of 500.

GARRIE, NICK The Moon And The Village CD
In the final year of his teens, Nick Garrie made an album that should be regarded as one of the great classic albums of the decade: The Nightmare Of J.B. Stanislas (1968). It's full of smart, romantic, melodious baroque-pop story telling songs with killer string and woodwind arrangements. After having disappeared for decades, copies of the album started to pop up for sale online at very high prices. In 2005, Stanislas was reissued. The word of mouth about how great it was soon spread and a new generation of Nick Garrie fans began to emerge. Musicians including Teenage Fanclub, Wilco, Camera Obscura, The Trembling Bells, Ladybug Transistor, and BMX Bandits were among those declaring themselves as fans. In 2009, Duglas T. Stewart was asked to help produce a new Nick Garrie album, 49 Arlington Gardens, and the world could hear that none of Nick's talents had diminished. Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub, who performed on the album, declared this during the sessions: "Nick's the real deal. He can really do it. Brilliant songs and what a voice." The Moon And The Village is the new album by Nick Garrie. It's a thing of great and rare beauty. It's still very much the same Nick Garrie who made that incredible 1969 debut and the 2009 album too, but this time, Nick Garrie is in a more reflective mood. The songs are as strong as ever, but they have a certain directness and fragility about them. The sonic settings created by Gary Olson and a supporting cast of players matches the tenderness of the story telling in Nick's songs. The arrangements are from the school of less-is-more. Nothing is screaming out for attention here, but instead every sound perfectly plays its part in bringing the stories in the songs to life. Nick sings about a lost diary and about losing one's way on the album's opener "Lois' Diary". This track, like others on the album, has a beautiful sadness about it. One of the album's most affecting tracks is its most stripped back, "Got You On My Mind". It's just Nick's voice and a harp. The intimacy and warmth of the album feels like the perfect antidote to the in-your-face and often ugly nature of modern life. This is a gentle album that soothes the soul and warms the heart.

SIGHA Metabolism Remixes 12"
Sigha's lauded Metabolism album (TOKEN 070CD/LP, 2017) is further commended with a remix EP. Wata Igarashi's demonstrates different areas of focus with two new versions of "Black Massing". The "Daylight Breaks" remix opens up the high-end, expressing the original's delicate harmonics. The "Dusk Falls" remix instead hones in on the deep and anticipatory nature of its foundation. Marco Shuttle's foreboding "Morning Star" remix feels skillfully subtractive, magnifying elements by adding space and drawing focus to its melodic asides. Function plays with the contemplative nature of "Down" in his version, adding dynamic percussion and energy while retaining its expression and depth.

VA Momentum (10 Years Of Token) CD
Over the last ten years, Token Records has grown steadily, both in size and stylistic breadth. The aptly-titled Momentum comes as a celebration of the close-knit family of artists amassed throughout the label's running. The record is a fitting collaborative project, with every track on the album produced by two longstanding and well-respected artists from the label's roster and especially commissioned for the release. On the development of the label's sound, Token founder Kr!z comments, "Inigo delivered quite the statement with the first release Identify Yourself (2007). I think identity was and still is key in the development of the label and the artists." Inigo Kennedy's involvement in Token has been profoundly influential and spans its very existence; with three collaborative tracks on the record, it's easy to hear his trademark cinematic sound throughout. One such offering, "Amalgam", is co-produced by Kr!z himself, which is a first step for the label head into releasing his own music after years of taking the back seat. Token's identity has been clarified through its curation over the years as each new artist has joined the label family. Ø [Phase] has been a staple since 2007, providing cerebral sustenance for the most discerning of listeners. Rødhåd's trademark composure was a similarly early addition, and although his Spomeniks EP (TOKEN 030EP, 2014) was a step aside from his own ongoing Dystopian project, he has remained an important member of the Token collective. Ctrls was a Token affiliate from early in his career, and has to date provided nine solo EPs. His class of jarring, inorganic techno adds an atypical feel to the label's output, while Antigone's 2015 double EP Cantor Dust paved the way for another strong artist/label relationship. There are some artists who, although better known for long releasing careers with other respected outlets, have become important in bolstering the label's character in particular. Oscar Mulero's reputation as an institution of electronic music precedes him, and Tadeo has been releasing his Detroit-leaning and avant-garde sounds since 2004. Sigha's involvement with Token came after a varied discography, his Metabolism album (TOKEN 070CD/LP) marking an integral progression in the label's direction, providing a firm expression of complex musicality and contemplative form. Features Rødhåd, Sigha, Ø [Phase], Antigone, Inigo Kennedy, Kr!z, Tadeo, Ctrls, and Oscar Mulero.

INTERGALACTIC LOVERS Exhale CD
It's almost trite to point out that Intergalactic Lovers have been on a journey, but -- in literally every sense -- they have. The Belgian band have travelled a long way, departing the dilapidated former factory building they use as a base to release two crisply superb albums and play shows in every corner of Europe and beyond. Their third album Exhale, however, raises the bar once more. It's the sound of a band resolutely coming into their own. Clipped indie-rock in the vein of Interpol, The Cure, or Yeah Yeah Yeahs, it's punchy and concise, yet also incredibly open. "Every album we've always moved up a step because as you're older you evolve and what happens in your world changes," explains Lara Chedraoui. "We're friends, we're family, and the farther you travel it inspires you to write different things as well." Recorded in two English studios -- The Chairworks in Leeds and Vale Studios in Worcestershire -- Exhale was steered by Gil Norton (Pixies, Foo Fighters, Patti Smith) and mastered by Ted Jensen (Florence & The Machine, Arcade Fire, Muse). "I was pretty intimidated at first," Lara explains. "Gil works with so many bands and we were this little band from Flanders trying to prove to him that we're even bigger than any name he's ever worked with." "The studio is one of the most confrontational places to be because you can hear every note and that can make you insecure in a way," Lara reveals. "We wanted more from this record." And they've certainly succeeded. Exhale sounds like PJ Harvey at her most seductive, Feist at her most barbed. "Talk! Talk!" feels like Blondie's cynical cousin, "Ego Wars" is a rousing depiction of a faltering relationship, while "Fears" is an anthem that feels almost tailor-made for arenas. "Between The Lines" is a fantastic example of what to expect: barbed songwriting with a personal touch, it's everything Intergalactic Lovers have promised to do, condensed into three minutes of biting, emphatic, coruscating music. "It's what goes on in my head and it has to come out," explains singer Lara Chedraoui. "It's that or I beat up people. So I decided I'm going to write songs -- it's cathartic because it helps me get rid of anger or sorrow." Comes in four-panel digipak; Includes fold-out poster.

SLOWEST LIFT, THE The Slowest Lift LP
"The debut release by The Slowest Lift (Sophie Cooper and Julian Bradley) presents a new chapter in the long-running tradition of radical English music duos. Originally formed via a commission from the Supernormal Festival, Cooper (an accomplished solo performer and collaborator) and Bradley (from frequent VHF delinquents Vibracathedral Orchestra) play a kind of gentle post-industrial psychedelia, with Cooper's lovely vocals floating over a collage of live and electronic performances. The songs are a blend of straightforward performance and eccentric bricolage, with rude electronic interjections sitting comfortably alongside delicate guitar and keyboard melodies. Zoviet France-like low-fi atmospherics compete with Cooper's voice for air on tracks like 'Crystal Fracture' and 'Hi From The Skyline Swim,' while the duo's surprising cover of Duran Duran's 'The Chauffeur' deep on side two sneaks in perfectly, a mini-pop music drama reimagined as pure hallucination."

FM BELFAST Island Broadcast CD
Island Broadcast is the fourth LP from FM Belfast. Broadcasting from their home on a remote island, you can sense that the tracks are personal. The album has 11 tracks, 11 intimate stories to dance to. It's like you've been invited to a Cabin Fever Dance Party in their living room. The lyrics are about bliss, euphoria, trying to be a human in this strange world, friendship, of loss and growing up. The first song of the album "All My Power" deals with guilt. There are two characters in the song. One is a blamer while the other one is being blamed. "Follow Me" song is about a person who is no longer blind to the world around her. It's about taking responsibility for your choices. Being kind is not the same as being naive. "Enjoy" is about not watching the world go by without having a good time. The night is the best time for procrastination, you can hide in the dark and nobody can see you waste your life. "Up All Night" captures this feeling. Like many songs on the album, "Agent" is about holding your head above water in this strange world. It's easy to get blindsided and lost, but who's going to speak up for the weak if you don't do it. The lyrics for "You're So Pretty" originally come from a short story written by Lóa. They are about getting old without maturing. The song is about being restless and broke. "Streamers" is a quiet love-story about having found the person you want to sit next to for the rest of your life and watch crappy TV together. "Leave A Mark" is a personal reminder to do something about the life you are given and not waste time; Even if things are not great today, there is always tomorrow. It doesn't have to be important, it could just be writing your name on a wall. "Fearless Youth" is a nostalgic song about being a fearless adolescent and the friends you used to have. The lyrics are written by Örvar who's also a founding member of MúM. "Strobe" is an atmospheric track. It's made for people who want to dance in a euphoric bliss. "The Game" tells you to resist the power of bad people and bad governments. There's a big game being played and you don't need to participate, you can resist.

TAKADA, MIDORI Through The Looking Glass LP
New repress; LP version. Comes in a Stoughton "Tip-On" jacket; Includes printed inner sleeves. Palto Flats and We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present the highly-anticipated reissue of Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's sought after and timeless ambient/minimal album Through The Looking Glass, originally released in 1983 by RCA Japan. Considered a holy grail of Japanese music by many, Through The Looking Glass is Midori Takada's first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience. Midori Takada is a composer, multi-percussionist, and theater artist renowned in Japanese vanguard circles. Midori has released two solo albums: Through The Looking Glass and Tree Of Life (1999) and wrote music for Tadashi Suzuki's theater plays. Her hypnotic, minimalist music is based in the concept of coherence between sound and the human body. She performs solo on marimba and other percussion instruments. She debuted on the scene of Berlin Philharmonic, performing with the RIAS Symphonie-Orchester Berlin just after graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1974. She continued her career with solo concerts in Japan and abroad. In the 1980s, Midori began to explore the traditional music of Asia and Africa. Her fascination resulted in joint projects with Kakraba Lobi from Ghana, Lamine Konte from Senegal, Farafina Band from Burkina Faso, and Korean musicians: zither player Chi Seong-Ja, flute player Won-Il, and saxophone player Kang Tae-Hwan. She also led Mkwaju Ensemble's innovative percussion project and still performs with free-jazz band Ton-Klami with Kang Tae-Hwan and jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh. Takada's compositions have a remarkable way of affecting the imagination. Her minimalist, contemplative music is filled with the concept of infinity and reminds us of a moon voyage, falling stars, a journey into the ocean, or a walk in the garden. The trans melodies, initially simple, begin to loop and splinter, their rhythm breaking and thickening, slowly drawing the listener into another reality. This fully licensed reissue comes with extensive liner notes.

LUCY The Hermit/The High Priestess (Blawan Remixes) 12"
Berlin based Zehnin ask Blawan to remix its inaugural EP from Lucy. First up is Blawan's version of "The Hermit" which is seven spacious and mysterious minutes of creeping pads and implicit rhythms. Dark but inviting, it's stripped-back, hollowed-out techno that manages to be hugely absorbing and menacing without any clearly defined drums. On the flip is the equally beguiling "The High Priestess". Deep, subliminal kicks set the tone as groaning riffs, train-track percussion and distant, tortured pads all slowly hypnotize. This is evocative dead-of-night music that says a lot in impressively economical ways.
