LE MILLIPEDE The Sun Has No Money LP
LP version. Edition of 500. Alien Ensemble's trombone man Mathias Goetz caused quite a splash when he released his eponymous debut LP under his Le Millipede moniker back in 2015 (N 042CD/LP): The multi-instrumentalist's initial offering was clearly something else, impossible to grasp, a musical vessel that carried an almost cosmic kind of song-craft. Followed by remix album Mirror Mirror (2017), it's now time for album number two: The Sun Has No Money. Following an initial warm-up round sans electricity, this new album soon begins to glow: Goetz doesn't need pedals, he boosts circulation by single-handedly playing tons and tons of different instruments -- it actually feels like thousands, easily. There are various sonic illusions... and yet Le Millipede doesn't hide anything: He's also willing to show the inner workings, the actual recording process and everything else. In short: he goes meta. Some of these melodies appear to be shadows of earlier tunes, dating back to, say, 1898 or even before that, melodies that were first registered in the Tin Pan Alley publishers' offices back in 1912 or 1917. You'll actually get to see this Alley at that point in time. You'll see the ropes, the workings. Suddenly, you can hear the shadows! Okay, so one side of this street is America. The opposite side: Russia. And smack dab in the middle: Europe. All the back-and-forth that occurs between these two poles ultimately depends on the movement of the sun. You'll get to meet Prokofiev's and Scriabin's ghost, among other spirits, reframed and published by Le Millipede's own imaginary label imprint on the historic Tin Pan Alley. Indeed there are moments on this album when Le Millipede seems to be playing Scriabin's clavier a lumieres, when his performance seems to be based on synesthesia, a wild cross-pollination of colors and sounds. In case you didn't know this: In the States, Prokofiev goes by the name Brian Wilson, and Scriabin's also known as Sun Ra -- yet another guy who's usually broke, but gets to spend a lot of time out in the sun. Together, these assorted protagonists ask the people of the Antilles for Mutabor dance-tokens and send postcards to Moondog in Germany, right back into the darkness. Le Millipede controls the very center of this hustle and bustle: going as far as to employ some southern chopped-and-screwed styles, he's 100% current and zeitgeisty!

SIGN LIBRA Closer To The Equator 12"
Released as Sign Libra, Closer To The Equator is the work of Latvian artist and composer Agata Melnikova. Composed for a contemporary ballet at Latvian National Opera in Riga, the music on this record strongly relies on Melnikova's appreciation of BBC-produced nature documentaries. Projecting the life of each creature that inhabits the British TV-program into her very personal and highly synthetized world, Sign Libra lends these microscopic beings her own voice. Each song works like a musical "tableau" in which the main protagonists -- plants and animals -- come on stage to play their part in a carefully choreographed ballet.

MARTELLI, LEONARDO Menti Singole Vol.2 12"
With Menti Singole Vol.2, Leonardo Martelli establishes a picture of his music, an update of his aspirations in the feminine. Sparse, clear-cut and slightly nerve-racking, "Micaella" opens with ethereal string machines balancing a nagging acid leitmotiv. "Alice" sees a sad synth melody comes in as if it was trying to fill an emotional void, but with missing notes. On "Laura" Martelli keeps on playing with the potential of abstraction but with rap samples. "Sofia" gives a particularly striking example of this weird game he likes to play as Biggie Smalls's words get progressively eviscerated from their meaning.

KOOL & TOGETHER Sittin' On A Red Hot Stove/Nassau Beat 7"
"Big Crown is proud to present this reissue 7 inch from Texas's own Kool & Together. The A side, 'Sittin' On a Red Hot Stove' is an infectious, medium-paced funk movement that chugs along with the help of some sharp drums from Joe and a rolling bass line that never quits. Originally edited by Texas record mogul Huey Meaux, the 45 version clocks in at just under two and a half minutes, and gave the band its strongest single. It's an anecdotal tale of a woman who is lusted after but so mean-spirited, she could melt the romance away. Side B is an unreleased demo version from Kool & Together working up the monster 'Funky Nassau'. Clearly something they never finished, the raw recording and lo fidelity of it is what give what they call 'Nassau Beat' it's charm."

FABULOUS DYNAMICS, THE Get Hip To Yourself/Every Time I See A Pretty Girl 7"
"Big Crown Records is proud to present a recording that could have easily been lost forever like so many others from its era. Taken from the only known copy of this acetate that appears to be a rehearsal recording for the group to solicit local gigs, these stripped down versions of 'Get Hip To Yourself' and 'Every Time I See A Pretty Girl' are American relics. The only information about the acetate is handwritten on a piece of masking tape affixed to the A side, the name of the group, The Fabulous Dynamics, and the track listing. Of the 6 songs on the demo, we pulled the 2 most buttery, delectable, sweet & savory slices of mid 60's group soul. Stripped down to vocal harmonies and acoustic guitar, both sides of this 7 capture the lo-fi, intimate sonic landscape of yesteryear, something that is often emulated, but never quite duplicated. Another pretty cool detail about this acetate, it was found in the personal record collection of Lamont Dozier."

DEEP'A & BIRI Dominance 2x12"
Central to the Israeli club scene, Deep'a & Biri have long been defying expectations even within a community they helped construct. Serving as resident DJs, activists, and bookers for Tel Aviv's legendary Barzilay Club, the pair helped build a transcendent club scene. Now based in Berlin, for Deep'a & Biri, things are much the same, even if the landscape and the city is different. Always rooted in the fertile ground between machines and emotion, on their second full-length LP, Dominance, the duo demonstrates their unique grasp of the sensitive, unfolding relationship between man and machine. Steadfast in their insistence never to remain in one lane in terms of their sound, Dominance flawlessly segues between forcefulness and weightlessness. From beginning to end, this is not a record afraid to show its teeth with an uncompromising, instantly recognizable techno palette that kicks the foundations of any sound system with menace, anger, and determination, particularly on tracks such as the dense "Voltage" and pulsing throughout the more industrial flourishes of "École De Nancy" and "Seeking Solace". Beyond these grittier, although never mindless, moments of authority, a sense of escapism and curiosity imbues the album. "Alpha Cephei" offers the first hint of Deep'a & Biri's more wistful concepts, producing a smoke trail of twinkling electronics out of a smudged but distinctive bassline. That understated sense of emotional catharsis carries throughout, to be found between the complex-yet-familiar bells that drive the rhythm of "Flow Diverter" to a Detroit-indebted landscape that will surely instantly elasticate any keen dancers, while "False Memories" offers big-room techno fulfillment with none of the character or sincerity removed for cheap thrills. Saving the most remarkable moments for last, the pair sign off "Dominance" with the poignant and purifying "Astral Trails", fusing an ethereal, ambient landscape with the more pronounced rhythms of their hardware. The album's distinctive artwork comes from the studio of Jewish orthodox artist Avraham Guy Barchil, who forged a powerful connection with Deep'a, both was immediately drawn to "weird atmosphere, amazing technique and emotions involved with his work". Ensuring their natural, conscious touch always remains at the forefront of this unapologetically machine-driven music, Deep'a & Biri have produced an album in the lineage of their heroes and greatest influences. Cerebral yet satisfying, deep yet always engaging, Dominance both reasserts and evolves Deep'a & Biri's forward facing and singular sound.

EASTLEY/STEVE BERESFORD/PAUL BURWELL/DAVID TOOP, MAX Whirled Music LP
Black Truffle present a reissue of a landmark UK release, Max Eastley, Steve Beresford, Paul Burwell, and David Toop's Whirled Music, originally released on Quartz in 1980. Remastered and cut at 45RPM by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering Berlin. Includes a 24-page booklet with archival materials and notes from David Toop, alongside contemporary reviews, flyers, notes on the instruments and performance documentation; Gatefold sleeve."[Whirled Music is] one of the key documents of the inventive and energetic scene around the London Musicians Collective in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Originally released on Toop's own Quartz label in 1980, the LP features a remarkable series of performances made entirely with whirled and swung instruments and objects. Part of the second generations of British free improvising musicians, the prolific scene centered around the performers heard here chafed at the limitations present within the music and ideology of improvising legends such as Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Tony Oxley, and John Stevens. Where the first generations of British free improvisers often demonstrated a rigorous commitment to non-idiomatic free improvisation and instrumental virtuosity, musicians like Beresford reconnected with the dada antics of figures like Han Bennink and surrendered to joyful musical promiscuity, gleefully disrupting expectations around 'serious' improvised music through quotations (of anything from Beethoven to reggae) and deliberate amateurism. . . . Beginning in 1979, Whirled Music was the title given to a series of performances in which a variety of instruments and objects, both home-made and store bought, traditional and invented, would be whirled to produce sound. In addition to variations on traditional instruments such as the bullroarer, Whirled Music also made use of whirled whistles, hand drums, radios, and microphones. Due to the danger this represented for both performers and audiences, the performers wore protective masks and were separated from the audience by a net. . . . Presented in glorious cassette-recorded room fidelity, the LP's first side features a single extended live performance in which percussive chattering, resonant gong-like tones, mysterious wind tones, and swells of delirious noise join together to create a sonic landscape as reminiscent of an environmental recording (wind in the trees, the squawking of birds) as of an ethnographic recording of the music of an unknown civilization. Although purely acoustic, the music has an unstable, dispersed quality reminiscent of the pioneering live electronics of the Sonic Art Union or even early Voice Crack. The LP's second side presents a series of shorter excerpts, including some beautifully sparse outdoor recordings where the sounds of the whirled instruments blend indistinguishably into the backdrop of environmental sounds." --Francis Plagne

HELDON Electronique Guerilla (Heldon I) LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Heldon's debut album Electronique Guerilla, originally released on Disjuncta in 1974. In 1973, 22-year old Richard Pinhas was well on his way to becoming a full-time philosopher. He had almost finished his PhD and begun teaching at the University of Paris. But he also had a hobby: writing music and recording it himself. When he submitted a few tracks to British label E.G. (home of King Crimson and Roxy Music), the imprint was interested, but Pinhas was frustrated to find out he'd have to wait a year for them to release anything. So Pinhas put out his first album on his own label, Disjuncta. He called the project Heldon (from a location in Norman Spinrad's 1972 sci-fi novel The Iron Dream). It might have been the first self-released rock record in France. "Or at least the first one that worked," says Pinhas. "It was like a musical and political event in France. Musical because there were few artists using synthesizers here, or even in the world. And political because we tried to say that the big companies make everything bad and their records are too expensive." Most of Electronique Guerilla was made by Pinhas alone, but "Ouais, Marchais, Mieux Qu'en 68" featured five collaborators, including one of his mentors, Gilles Deleuze. Over winding guitars and pointed percussion, the French philosopher reads lyrics taken from Friedrich Nietzsche's "The Voyager and His Shadow" (1880). Despite being self-released -- with Pinhas himself delivering some stock directly to record stores -- Electronique Guerilla quickly sold over 19,000 copies. That convinced Pinhas he should make and release more music by himself -- but he would have little time for philosophy. "I had to make a decision, because at that point in France, you couldn't do two jobs," he remembers. "So I made this very bad choice to be a rock 'n' roll musician." It's a choice he's stuck to for four decades, and the fiery Electronique Guerilla provided a potent spark. 2018 remaster by Willem Makkee.

HELDON Allez-Teia (Heldon II) LP
LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Heldon's second album Allez-Teia, originally released on Disjuncta in 1975. Before making his own music in the early '70s, Richard Pinhas was a King Crimson fan. The British group has buzzed in Pinhas's mind for decades, but their greatest impact came early. When he first saw them play, Pinhas was struck by music played during intermission. "When I saw (King Crimson guitarist) Robert Fripp and Brian Eno perform in Paris later, I realized that the intermission music was their work," Pinhas said. "I didn't know that when I first heard it, but I was very impressed by it. It was the most important influence on Heldon." That influence is clear on Allez- Teia, originally released in 1975 on Pinhas's own Disjuncta label. "In The Wake Of King Fripp" is a soaring mix of string-like electronics and smeared guitar, a reference both to the guitarist and King Crimson's second album In The Wake Of Poseidon (1970). The meditative "Omar Diop Blondin", in which free tones float above a repetitive guitar figure, is dedicated to Fripp and Eno. A strong influence also comes from The Soft Machine's Robert Wyatt, who was slated to record some tracks with Pinhas for Allez-Teia until the expense of his travel from London to Paris proved prohibitive. Yet Allez-Teia -- the title a nod to the ancient Greek term for philosophical truth, "aletheia" -- is hardly a tribute album. The pieces Pinhas crafts with partner Georges Grunblatt -- guitar, Mellotron, ARP synths -- are beatific on the surface but infused with undercurrents of tension. Over four decades after he made Allez-Teia, Pinhas's admiration for King Crimson remains profound. He actually met Fripp in 1974, and the two still stay in touch. "We have a great friendship; he has been very helpful," says Pinhas. "Fripp has always been my Hendrix." Some artists might balk at admitting such strong influence over their own work, but for Pinhas it's all about respect. "In the academic world in France, you list your sources," says Pinhas, who received a PhD in philosophy before launching his music career. "So I thought it was good to say, 'Yes, we are influenced by this, and we are proud of it, and people have to know it.' The work of King Crimson at that time was very important. It's not a secret." 2018 remaster by Willem Makkee.

Fausto Messina is a veteran DJ and producer from Treviso, a small town on the plain between the Gulf of Venice and the Alps. Pica Pica is Fausto's debut EP on Cadenza. In the track "Pica Pica", a recurrent evocative voluminous chord is convoyed by a classy powerful kick drum and an organic symphony of fluffy percussions and metallic bonks. The extremely intense vibrant rhythms of "Idiophono" contrast with the gentle reverberating harmonies of an ensemble of struck idiophones. The smooth magnetic flux of "Planets Ballet" concludes with steamy synthesizers and bubbly bleeps.

MATRIXXMAN Sector III: Polyphony 12"
Dekmantel regular Matrixxman returns with the third, and final instalment in the Sector series, Part III: Polyphony. "Initiation" resonates with the grandiosity, and harsh claustrophobia of early Underground Resistance. "Access Granted" drives hard with pulsing effects, with a dystopic, rhythmic cacophony of euphony. "Desert Planet" plays around with a differing tempo, imagining a more fantastical vision of music, echoing back to earlier Plastikman productions, using a vast sonic spectrum to conjure up a color palette of alien imagery. "Horizon" rounds things off; a track that builds on minimalism with a progressive composition, allowing the polyphonics to drive the track.

The Detroit legend returns to Dekmantel to deliver the final installment in a trilogy of EP releases that initially began back in February 2016. Now based in Alabama, the Detroit-techno producer is returning to his roots -- this is classic Robert Hood, operating in new, and uncharted ways. Kicking off with "Red Machine", where again parallels can be drawn between the days of Minimal Nation, and Internal Empire, the sound is sparse and brutal, representing a challenged future. The B side "Transform" provides a composition of stripped, down electro, while taking in the 606 style, and adding additional, textural depth.

JOY ORBISON Selectors 004 CD
The Dekmantel Selectors compilation series is set to continue with a highly-anticipated edition curated by Joy Orbison. First announced in 2015 when the Selectors project was unveiled, the fourth compilation in the series finds the singular UK talent curating a sort of tribute to his home country and its rich musical history. Like many of us, Joy Orbison (aka Peter O'Grady) is a product of his environment. Based in London, he's keenly aware of the UK's unique musical landscape and the role it's played in shaping his own artistic vision. Growing up, the sounds of garage, jungle, and dubstep all made an impression on him, but O'Grady knows that the roots of this music go back much further. "Soundsystem culture is a thread that runs through almost everything here," he says. "It's had a huge effect on me, sometimes without me even knowing it." In keeping with previous Selectors compilations, O'Grady's contribution to the series is not a mix CD, but a collection of hand-picked tracks from his own archives. Touching on everything from shuffling garage and loopy techno to booming jungle and a number of distinctly British hybrids, it's a diverse collection to be sure, but O'Grady prefers to focus on what ties these tracks together. "We're a lot more focused on BPM and genre these days," he says, "but I can honestly say that didn't really cross my mind while I was compiling this. In my mind, all these tracks have a lot in common." "What I do is a direct result of this music and I'm indebted to the sociological factors that brought it to life," explains O'Grady. "The UK at its best is a celebration of diverse cultures intertwining and creating beautiful results. Hopefully this collection of music can document a piece of that. Now more than ever, it seems important to acknowledge and celebrate this." Features James Massiah, Toyin Agbetu, Rosaline Joy, R Solution, Beatrice Dillon, Bitstream, Oblivion, L.E. Bass, Stylistic, Santos Rodriguez, JP Buckle, and Klein.

2018 repress; LP version. Rids the World of the Curse of the Vampires (1981) not only ably displays Scientist's varied approach, but also clocks in as one of his best outings. Scientist keeps things lively with plenty of reverb and echo-treated percussion, ghostly piano parts, video game sound effects, and other wobbly interjections from the mixing board. The record's expert evocation of the Halloween spirit also includes some fiendishly-voiced intros, the cover art's cartoon potpourri of horror film characters, and the dubious claim made in the liner notes that Scientist mixed it all at midnight on Friday the 13th. Along with Keith Hudson's Pick a Dub (1974) and Lee Perry's Blackboard Jungle Dub (1973), this is one of the essential dub albums.

PRIMITIVE WORLD White On White LP
White On White is an absorbingly dynamic, multi-layered album of improvisations made on the seminal PPG Wave synth, inspired by the work, life, and theories of the great, if forgotten, British constructivist artist Marlow Moss (1889-1958): a radical, gender-bending British Jewish lesbian and innovator of non-figurative art who was a then-contemporary influence on Piet Mondrian, with whom she worked alongside from the late 1920s as part of the Abstraction-Creation artists association in Paris, until the Nazi's forced her from mainland Europe back to England, where she settled in the far west of Cornwall. White On White forms a follow-up of sorts to Sam Willis's Ascention tape (2015), and perhaps more aptly, leads on from his and Alessio Natalizia's reworks of Daphne Oram -- arguably another overlooked, British female pioneer of her field - which are collected on their Walls album, Sound Houses (ELP 005LP, 2014). There's little doubt that this is some of Willis's strongest solo work, which can be attributed to the fecund inspiration of Moss's work, life, and theories, as well as his access to a prized arsenal of rare vintage synths. Titled after the Moss piece which adorns the LP's front cover, White On White forms a welcome first introduction for many to Moss through a combination of visual representations -- photographs of the artist and her work -- with text by Lucy Howarth, curator of Moss's recent exhibitions at Museum Haus Konstruktiv exhibition (2017), the touring Tate display (2013-15), and of course the music itself, which seeks to describe Moss's mathematically sound geometries and evocative aesthetics through its lattice of unique, free-floating timbres and spatialized rhythm patterns. White On White is thus a direct result of the artist immersing himself in Moss's oeuvre, or what is left of it (most of her pre-WWII output was destroyed in the war), with results strongly reflective of the austere clarity and modernist structure of her works, from her syncopated line drawings modeled in the helixes of "Double Line", to the rotating perspectives of her 2D-into-3D metal sculpture manifest in the illusive, Peder Mannerfelt-like designs of "Matrix Of The Visible", whereas the closing nine minutes of perilous abstraction recalling Wendy Carlos's Clockwork Orange OST in "Man Guessed At A Spiritual Meaning And Imposed A Moral System" both literally and metaphorically serves a sort of unsentimentally elegiac, enigmatic lament for the artist's neglected status. RIYL: Oneohtrix Point Never's Good Time OST, Peder Mannerfelt's brut ambient, Rashad Becker's lysergic sound designs.

GUIONNET & DAICHI YOSHIKAWA, JEAN-LUC Intervivos LP
Empty Editions present Jean-Luc Guionnet and Daichi Yoshikawa's collaborative debut, Intervivos. Recorded during a week-long residency at Hong Kong's Empty Gallery, Intervivos (Latin for "between the living"), refers to the vital and unexpected acoustic synergy that developed between Guionnet's extended alto saxophone techniques and Yoshikawa's feedback systems during these sessions. Although Guionnet and Yoshikawa both come from prolific backgrounds in free jazz and electroacoustic improvisation -- Guionnet plays in The Ames Room with Will Guthrie and Clayton Thomas and Yoshikawa studied with AMM's Eddie Prevost -- Intervivos sees them developing an approach to improvising which seeks to escape the increasingly narrow stylistic confines of these musical provinces. The album is characterized by a brutal foregrounding of process and material lacking from the experimental music of so many of their contemporaries. Rather than seeking refinement or resolution through existing structures, Guionnet and Yoshikawa prioritize a sort of collaborative musical searching in which the aural entanglement, layering and folding of their scorched intonations creates an emergent musical form -- a non-linear music which sounds both ancient and futuristic. Coruscating alto saxophone riffs appear suddenly, before disintegrating amidst slabs of feedback and flurries of metallic percussion. Other times, Yoshikawa and Guionnet conjure shifting clouds of sustained tones from the timbral meshing of their instruments -- yielding a sound somewhere between the dense textures of Iancu Dumitrescu and the floating harmonics of Gagaku. Far from improvisation as we know it, this album instead gestures towards a speculative "electronic" music created through the ritualistic misuse of acoustic instruments. Intervivos is a fierce, undecorated triumph in the ruinous expression of instruments -- exalted in both its turbulence, and in its extreme testing of improvisational reality. Put summarily by Seymour Wright in the album's liner notes: "You don't need me to tell you how it sounds, or how to listen [...] this record begins when you play it." Features artwork by Jean-Luc Guionnet. Liner notes by saxophonist Seymour Wright. Mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering. Comes in a letterpress on Foldkraft paper sleeve. 180 gram vinyl; edition of 500.

DEREN, MAYA Voices Of Haiti LP
Fantome Phonographique present a reissue of Maya Deren's Voices Of Haiti, originally released as a 10" record in 1954. Maya Deren (1917-1961) was a Russian-American filmmaker and one of the most important voices in avant-garde cinema of the mid-20th century. She was a muse and inspiration to such up-and-coming avant-garde filmmakers as Curtis Harrington, Stan Brakhage, and Kenneth Anger, who emulated her independent, entrepreneurial spirit. Throughout the 1940s and '50s, Deren attacked Hollywood for its artistic, political and economic monopoly over American cinema. She stated, "I make my pictures for what Hollywood spends on lipstick." When Maya Deren decided, between the end of the '40s and the beginning of the '50s, to make an ethnographic film in Haiti, she was criticized for abandoning the avant-garde film world where she had made her place, but she was ready to expand to a new level as an artist. Deren not only filmed, recorded, and photographed many hours of voodoo ritual, but also participated in the ceremonies. It was in working on this film that Deren recorded the Haitian musicians found on these sides originally released in the very early days of Elektra records. Voices Of Haiti, a beautiful artifact of percussion and chant heavy ritual music, is one of the earliest and best Western ethnographic documents of voodoo culture in Haiti. It is unmissable both for its historical value and for the beauty and spiritual power of the music it contains. Original cover art for the album was created by the Japanese composer and performer Teiji Ito, husband of Maya Deren. Remastered; repressed here as a 12". Edition of 500.

KHAN, USTAD ABDUL WAHID Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan LP
Fantome Phonographique present a reissue of Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan's self-titled release, originally released on Columbia in 1966. Even though the original recordings are crackly and in low fidelity (but also deeply charming) it seemed necessary to repress this record for its immense historiographic value. These recordings are made available here with new mastering, in as clear fidelity as possible. Fans of Indian classical music will no doubt know the name Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan. He founded the Kirana gharana musical family with his cousin Abdul Karim Khan in late 19th century, which was one of the most prolific and revered gharanas in Hindustani classical music. In addition, serious American minimalist scholars and fans have also been heard echoing his name, linked to that of Pandit Prân Nath, his student for over twenty years. It was Abdul Wahid Khan who pushed his pupil Prân Nath into exporting the techniques of their music school, which brought Prân Nath to the US where he drastically influenced most of the then-emerging avant-garde New York scene. Terry Riley, La Monte Young, Rhys Chatham, Jon Hassell, Yoshi Wada, Marian Zazeela, Henry Flynt, Charlemagne Palestine, and more were Prân Nath's students and in some cases close collaborators. It is therefore clear how important it is to gain deeper understanding of the music of Ustad Abdul Waheed Khan. A celebrated singer and sarangi player, Khan forbade recording of any of his performances to avoid imitation by other singers. Only these three pieces survived, recorded in secret for a radio broadcast in 1947, just two years before the singer's death. A truly stunning document that is essential to understanding the modern era of Hindustani classical music, whose influential reach is immeasurable. Edition of 500.

PERREY, JEAN JACQUES Prelude Au Sommeil LP
Fantome Phonographique present a reissue of Jean-Jacques Perrey's Prélude Au Sommeil, originally released in 1958. Jean-Jacques Perrey was one of the earliest innovators in electronic music, creating a body of work spanning decades that has influenced everyone from Brian Eno to The Beastie Boys. One of the pioneers of musique concrète and electronic tape manipulation, Prélude Au Sommeil ("Prelude to Sleep") is Perrey's debut recording but shows a composer already at maturity. Originally released at the end of the fifties, as a private press under the fake institutional name "Institut Dormiphone", Prélude Au Sommeil consists of two side-long tracks played on the Ondioline (George Jenny's 1941 vacuum-tube based, spring-loaded electronic instrument). The music contained in this mysterious vinyl is like something between dreamy church organ hymns and the keyboard-based minimalism that Philip Glass and Terry Riley developed a decade later. The music of Prélude Au Sommeil was intended as sleep-inducing and tranquilizing for use in mental hospitals. It is unclear if the copies pressed actually had been distributed to mental hospitals or if the whole story was just a fantastical joke on the part of Mr. Perrey. This album is known as a precursor of what would later became known as "ambient music", 20 years before Brian Eno, the Kosmic Courier and the American minimalists. Something vaguely similar to Prélude Su Sommeil came about five years after its release, when in 1962 Epic Records produced the three volumes of Soothing Sounds For Baby from Raymond Scott. A droning/bubbling work of early electronic, Prélude Au Sommeil vacillates between playful and serious, light and dark, a truly beautiful piece from an icon of electronic music. Essential. Edition of 500.

SEVERNAYA Polar Skies 12"
Boris Bunnik is no stranger in the world of electronic music. He released several albums and EPs under a variety of monikers, most notable Conforce, since 2007 on labels like Delsin, Shipwrec, Frustrated Funk, and his own Transcendent imprint. Fauxpas Musik welcomes him for a new project called Severnaya. Originally hailing from the Island of Terschelling, the most northern and remote part of the Netherlands, Polar Skies is a piece of music dedicated to this special place. Severnaya means north in Russian and refers to the bright frozen landscapes of the northern archipels. Boris often plays with the influences and elements of ambient in his music. Coming from the man himself, Polar Skies is his most personal sound trajectory to come from his mind. Drum programming is scarce and what remains is a lush and profound listening experience floating on soundscapes and melodies. His roots and intentions are represented in the airy, tranquil sound design of Polar Skies. Things sound spacious, and life is at ease in these melancholic compositions. Crispy crackling percussions and icy pads place you in the midst of a resonant arctic landscape. You can hear influences drawn from producers like Biosphere, Pub, Brian Eno, but you'll also hear more contemporary influences from modern day film composition, but most of all, you'll hear Boris's own signature. The tracks were composed over a couple of years, from 2015-2017, in a more contemplative mindset. At some point this selection formed a consistent piece of music and, as a result, you hear his most personal and fragile works to date. Written and produced by Boris Bunnik, at the PasadenaOceanlab Studios. 180 gram vinyl; hot foil stamping on the cover.

MICRONAUT, THE Contrast 12"
Contrast from Stefan Streck, aka The Micronaut, contains four tracks full of references to the past in view of the future. "Earlylate" will start raves somewhere in broad acres or in abandoned tunnels. It's a riot of emotion with an air horn. "Oldnew" is shuffle but different; almost like Kompakt wasn't from Cologne, but from London -- massive groove with obstacles. "Underover" sounds like James Holden was on a short trip in England in the beginning of the '90s, when basses still made you tremble. "Smallbig" is a bouncer with tremendous thoughtfulness -- A hymn for the late hours.

FELIX Tiger Stripes/You Can't Hold Me Down 7"
"We weren't too familiar with this 1984 Release on Sleeping Bag Records until reading Tim Lawrence's book Hold On to Your Dreams: Arthur Russell and the Downtown Music Scene, 1973-1992. What we learned, was the 'behind the scenes' drama that went on during the recording of this single. Arthur Russell and DJ Nicky Siano contemplated working together once again after their first collaboration in 1978 lead to a successful 12" single called 'Kiss Me Again' on Sire under the Moniker Dinosaur where David Byrne even played lead guitar. Their second collaboration 'Tiger Stripes' came as the result of Siano convincing the father or a then girlfriend to fund the venture. Arthur wrote the lyrics, and while Siano remembers the demo tracks being promising, problems began to emerge as studio time began ticking. Russell became annoyed by Siano's hyperactive personality in the Studio, while the former Gallery/Studio 54 DJ grew impatient of his collaborator's constant changes and money spent in studio time. However according author Tim Lawrence the feud escalated when Arthur wanted to introduce a drum machine after the session drummer could not keep the time. As a result, he ended up scrapping the original tracks which included vocals recorded by Evelyn Thomas. However the nail in the coffin came when Siano assumed the role of lead vocalist at which point Russell quit appalled by how terrible he sounded. Although a perfectionist, Russell also suspected Siano had been using the project as a platform for himself as a vocalist. In any case their project went on with Siano as lead and newly recorded backup vocals by Maxine Bell. Released on Splash Records in 1984, Siano is credited as the artist and sole-producer while Russell only agreed to be credited under the alias Killer Whale. Not too long after, Sleeping Bag released a 7" promotional copy of 'Tiger Stripes' featuring only Bell as the sole vocalist, a different B-Side and Felix as the artist name. Although Russell did not credit himself by his real name, he credited the Killer Whale alias for all the writing and production on the single. There is a 12" on Sleeping Nag which credits Siano for production on 'Tiger Stripes' but it's clear from the release of the 7" that Russell wanted to make a statement. Beyond this peculiar story however, the music itself is worth the note. In a 2014 piece for The Vinyl Factory, Peter Zummo, one of Arthur Russell's closest collaborators best describes this release: Side A: 'Tiger Stripes', is a crazy editing job with lots of disparate elements. The opening beats give little sense of what key it will be in. Side B: 'You Can't Hold Me Down', is drum machine and conga, rhythm guitar, keyboard, female refrain and lead vocal, and male chant on 'bad little kitten -- pounce on you.' There's no real bass. I like it not only for the way it sounds but also that it shows that you don't have to follow the rules."

PHUTURE We Are Phuture (Ricardo Villalobos Phutur I-IV Remixes) 2LP
Get Physical Music's 16th year continues to serve up plenty of excellent and exciting new music with We Are Phuture, full of mesmeric remixes from the one and only Ricardo Villalobos. The source material here is the classic We Are Phuture (1988) by pioneering Chicago acid outfit, Phuture. The original is included in specially remastered form and the Chilean minimal techno hero serves up four of his own unique versions. Ricardo has been remixing for Get Physical Music for well over a decade and in 2017 his "Hauswiedermischung" version of Reboot's "Are You Loosing My Mind" was one of the standout tracks of the label's oeuvre (GPM 371EP). The original "We Are Phuture" is an abrasive and jittery house track that bristles with frazzled synths, dark-filtered vocals, acid twitches, and coarse percussion. It's one to electrify the floor, and still does plenty of damage 20 years after it first came out on Trax Records. Up first is "Phutur I Remix", which strips everything away to leave a fluttering snare line, rubber drums, and minimal synth that shapeshifts for nearly ten minutes. Add in some trademark Villalobos vocals that are alien and unsettling and you have a real classic in the making. The "Phutur II Remix" is busier, with deft drums that ride up and down and have a spoken word vocal floating up top. Alien sound designs and occult acid all join the mix later on, while "Phutur III Remix" sits somewhere in between. It's masterfully arranged so as to get deep into your brain and freak you out endlessly. Last but not least, "Phutur IV Remix" has layers of drums and toms, hits and snares, all wobbling away and pulling you deeper and deeper down the rabbit hole until the acid lines come in and take things up a notch. All four of these remixes are essential tracks that prove Villalobos is still at the height of his powers, and as such they are sure to become regulars in his DJ sets throughout 2018.

TOMORROW WE SAIL The Shadows LP
LP version. Includes download code. The Shadows is the new album from Leeds-based six-piece Tomorrow We Sail. Building on their debut release For Those Who Caught the Sun in Flight (GZH 049CD, 2014) over the course of three years, this new work combines perfectly the soaring atmospherics, gorgeously intertwined vocal harmonies, and dramatic shifts in tone and dynamics that have come to characterize Tomorrow We Sail's sound. Yet, there is a new sense of urgency here. Very much an album of its time, The Shadows draws upon the same sense of connection to both past and present that defined its precursor but features storytelling that's even more defiant and deeply personal. Like its predecessor, the record features seven songs but from the chiming guitars of opening track "Side By Side", it is clear that the stately pace of For Those Who Caught the Sun in Flight has made way for a far more dynamic and driving energy; perhaps best captured in the righteous anger of "The Ghost Of John Maynard Keynes". Tomorrow We Sail still invoke a keen sense of measured grace in their songwriting -- from the sweeping, elegiac title track, through to the sparse, restrained, yet haunting beauty of "Winifred" and "To Sleep". Urgent, yet assured, The Shadows demands your attention. Personnel: Ella Blake - vocals, guitar, piano, harmonium, harp; Angela Chan - viola, violin, vocals; Matt Clarke - guitar, keyboard, Hammond organ, glockenspiel, vocals; Alistair Hay - drums, percussion; Tim Hay - vocals, guitar, piano; Tom Ilett - bass guitar, vocals.

GRUNBLATT, GEORGE K-Priss LP
Gonzaï Records present a reissue of George Grünblatt's K-Priss, originally released in 1980. Following the 2016 reissue of Pôle, the 1975 album from Besombes & Rizet (FBK 003LP, 2016), Gonzaï Records goes on with réhabilitation of French weird-but-great bands. Next step is K-Priss by George Grünblatt, co-founder of the cult band Heldon, author of a solo LP inspired by Philip K. Dick, recorded in 1977 then published in 1980. After that, George Grünblatt became a famous psychiatrist for the next 40 years, 'til Gonzaï Records knocked to the door... Recorded on 1977 at Ramses Records studios, the first and very last album from George Grüblatt sounds like an instrumental disco-prog weirdness of 38 minutes, where you can find the best rhythm section of Paris at that time -- bassist Didier Batard from Space Art, Christophe, and Heldon, Michel Ettori from Weidorje, and Jean-Philippe Goude -- reunited around the two founding members of Heldon, Richard Pinhas and George Grünblatt. Since he began music, Grünblatt tried to conciliate his two loves, music and psychiatry, alternating lessons with Gilles Deleuze, Michel Foucault, and Jean François Lyotard and ramshackle recording sessions with Heldon, where he played synths and guitars from the beginning till It's Always Rock'n'Roll (1975). By that time, he decided to record what still remains his only solo album, K-Priss, from the name of an alien hallucinatory drug invented par Philip K. Dick in The Three Stigmata Of Palmer Eldritch (1955). Five instrumental tracks, oscillating between futurist free jazz and novo-rock. Mutant Sounds on K-Priss: "It's a kind of Grail. But it's not just a big experimental French record, it's also a big piece of 'French cheese', an incredible record in many ways." Grünblatt signs with K-Priss one of those indescribable pieces that make all the charm of the marginal France of the seventies. After the recording, the freak will be invited into the German forest for a week to play with Klaus Schulze (Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel) but he will finally decide to devote himself entirely to his profession of psychiatrist and psychoanalyst until... Gonzaï Records, 40 years later, did find him to reissue this album oh so disturbed. For fans of Cluster & Eno, Bernard Szajner, Jean-Michel Jarre, Zombie Zombie, and instrumental science fiction.

BLACKMAIL Amore Synthetique LP
Succeeding Bones (2012) and Dur Au Mal (2015), the French band Blackmail present their third LP, Amore Synthétique, the original sound track for a film shot by Marcia Romano and Benoit Sabatier (2016). A love story between a girl and a... possessed synth. The link between the movie Amore Synthétique and Blackmail seems simple. The band, created in 2010 later releasing two rock albums played with analog synths, was inspired by the film Amore Synthétique, dedicating their pieces to the film's antagonist Antonio, the killer synth that mindfucks human's brains. Obviously, Christine (1983) by John Carpenter and all the giallos from the '70s come to mind. The main thing to know is that the trio composed the songs with simple keywords like "violence", "blood", or "assault" in mind. Blackmail had to record the songs from Amore Synthétique in just a month, hence the sensible urgent nature of the whole LP. While the film has been rewarded at Parisian film festivals, the sound track can be listened as a standalone piece. If you pay attention closely, you may hear the synth's voice whispering some "Je t'aime" at night. One more time, the thing is alive.

DOMOTIC Smallville Tapes LP
Apart from his career with electronic and indie bands like Centenaire, Egyptology, Karaocake, producer Stéphane Laporte, aka Domotic, now presents his fifth LP, Smallville Tapes. It sounds like the instrumental soundtrack from an imaginary water movie where you could find François de Roubaix and Terry Riley composing tracks for Commandant Cousteau. Stéphane Laporte has been digging the music for the past 15 years. It was not easy, but he succeeded in making his name relevant when people think about experimental stuffs with catchy tunes. For Smallville Tapes, everything began when Stephane was on holiday at La Ciotat, on the French Riviera, trying to make music at his parents' house. Finally, one day he found a four-track recorder that he bought to someone on a supermarket parking, and he saved his demo songs on some old K7. Back to Paris then, he first forgot those songs composed during the summer, but he finally added some electronic organ Philicorda on the tracks, plus some Siel orchestra. Smallville Tapes was born. The fifth album, following previous albums released on Clapping Music, is a masterpiece looking like some French cult albums like The Virgin Suicides by AIR (1999) or Histoire De Melody Nelson by Serge Gainsbourg (1971); whereas Domotic prefers to quote "garage array" by Dylan Shearer or CAN and François de Roubaix as relevant influences. "I wanna thank my parents for not having converting my bedroom in a fitness room," he says. Every song has been composed over there, in La Ciotat, and that's the main purpose of Smallville Tapes. Not so small, actually.

First full artist EP of 2018 on Heist Recordings. "Me And You And Her" is about as classic as a house track can be -- it's got a sweet, repetitive vocal loop, some semi-grainy but groovy percussion, and a simple piano hook. "Move It, Move It" moves straight into old-school Chicago territory with a raw AF acid bassline. Chicago-bred Jamie 3:26 gives the track a nice old school twist. "Fashion Country Girl" is Adryiano's dystopian view of a world where Dolly Parton gets mangled through an overdrive, then gets distorted, crushed, mangled, deleted, re-added in 8-bit and then crushed again.

VA Let No One Judge You: Early Recordings from Iran, 1906-1933 4LP BOX
2018 limited repress. Quadruple LP set. 180 gram vinyl presented in two gatefold sleeves, inside a heavy card slipcase with a 12" square, 20-page, saddle-stitched booklet on art paper. Ravishingly beautiful, achingly precious songs and instrumentals, ranging from two performances by the Royal Court Orchestra in 1906 -- with futuristic, overlapping trumpets and exquisite clarinet improvisation -- through to a hauntingly soulful H?fez setting by Moluk Zarr?bi of K?sh?n, from 1933. There are eight selections from more than 300 recordings made in 1909 above the Gramophone Company offices in City Road, London EC1, by the Persian Concert Party. Unrest at home had compelled the group to travel in order to record, paying its way with shows in Baku, Constantinople, Vienna, and Paris. Its music is a striking, experimental combination of European and Iranian elements, impressionistic and exotic, with chimes, castanets and rattles. There is an arrangement of traditional Persian music for pipe-organ; and rueful, imploring, besotted love-songs. "I am crazy with envy of the dress asleep in your arms and the oils rubbed into your skin." A setting of R?heb's poetry by Moluk Zarr?bi is drawn from 136 titles recorded at 1925 sessions in Tehran, when Iranian women were for the first time concertedly accepted as serious professional musicians, without the connotation of prostitution. Such was the social stigma borne by musicians, especially female, several of our singers hid their identities behind partial or assumed names. "Parv?neh," for example, "Butterfly" -- represented by her interpretations of Sa'di and H?fez, with self-accompaniment on setar, a three-stringed lute ("seh," three; "tar," string), Iranian ancestor of the Indian sitar: "I am the slave of love..." And Helen, with some boozy H?fez wisdom: "Keep your cards close to your chest. Kiss nothing except the lips of your beloved and the rim of a cup of wine. Let no one judge you." Moluk Zarr?bi -- together with Qamar-ol-Moluk Vaziri -- featured on more than half the 1925 recordings. On her return to the studio the following year, she was accompanied on tar by Mortez? Ney-D?vud, amongst the country's most acclaimed musicians and composers of all time, from the Jewish community of Tehran. It sounds like another stupendously gifted Iranian Jewish musician -- Yahy? Zarpamjeh -- accompanying Akhtar. Alongside one of these duets, two of Ney-D?vud's solo recordings from the same sessions are instrumental highlights of this epic set, besides a series of staggering improvisations by Abd-ol-Hoseyn Shahn?zi, sublime ney and kamancheh playing by Mehdi Nav?'i and the Armenian Hayk, and an anonymous tar solo from the South Caucasus, captured in Tiflis in 1912, red-raw and rocking. The music was restored from 78s at Abbey Road Studios in London.

VA Fools Paradise Favorites: '50s & '60s Bop Slop And Schlock LP + 7"
LP version. Includes bonus picture sleeve 45RPM 7". For over 20 years, your irrepressible host Rex and his legendary Fool's Paradise radio show on WFMU has held a grudge against the whole square world. Broadcasting from an undisclosed location in rural New Jersey in a fur-lined fall-out shelter located miles below the earth's crust, this weekly excursion to nowhere continues to proudly play nothing but greasy grooves from inane 45s; non-hit misfires, curveballs, and oddballs from the rock n' roll era. Yes sirree, those weird and warped ones about monsters, beatniks, chickens, apes, stewed moonbeams, and mosquito knees... And now, in the tradition of free love and nickel beer, Jazzman Records has teamed up with Rex to bring together a fabulous collection of his top spins. These are the songs that, by virtue of Rex's dogged persistence, have now achieved a kind of classic status that was surely never previously thought imaginable -- Fool's Paradise Favorites. 18 tracks featuring Premiers, Al Katraz, Jules Blattner, The Flock Rocker, Bob Strauss, Hurricane Harry, Glenn Willings, Dick Summer, The Bobby Borda Five, The Renaults, Wee Willie & The Soulettes, Billy Duke And The Dukes, The Orbits, Dan Kubiak, King Sid, Arnie Ginsburg, Sidney & Chimps, and Stringbeans.

XENAKIS, IANNIS Persepolis LP
After La Légende d'Eer in 2016 (KR 024LP), the Perihel series presents one of the milestones of electroacoustic music: Iannis Xenakis's mind-blowing, 54-minutes oeuvre Persepolis. Persepolis is the longest electroacoustic composition by Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) who ranks among the most influential 20th century avant-garde composers. Commissioned by the Persian Shah, the piece was part of a multimedia performance -- Xenakis's so-called "polytopes" -- which premiered in 1971 in Shiraz-Persepolis (Iran) as a performance including light-tracks, laser beams, groups of children walking around with torches, and 59 loudspeakers to project the music in an open-air situation. Xenakis had realized Persepolis on 8-track analog tape in the Studio Acusti in Paris and released a stereo reduction on vinyl in the famous Philips series "Prospective 21e Siècle" in 1972, adding the new subtitle "We bear the light of the earth", his most hymnal title ever. Out of print for decades now, the LP became -- especially the Japanese edition from 1974 -- one of the most expensive collector's item of electroacoustic music. There were some later CD versions with different durations -- too long due to a wrong sample rate, others shortened by three minutes due to other reasons. The Perihel series now presents a new version: mixed from the original master 8-track tapes by longtime zeitkratzer sound engineer Martin Wurmnest and mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin -- the same experts who had already taken care of the 2016 Karlrecords release of La Légende d'Eer, another milestone composition among the works of the Greek-French avant-garde composer. Previous releases in the Perihel series, curated by Reinhold Friedl: Guy Reibel's Douze Inventions en Six Modes de Jeu (KR 028LP, 2015); Iannis Xenakis's La Légende d'Eer (KR 024LP, 2016), John Cage's Complete Song Books (KR 029LP, 2016). 180 gram vinyl; Includes insert and download code.

BAKER & GARETH DAVIS, AIDAN Invisible Cities LP
Invisible Cities, the first collaboration between Aidan Baker (Nadja, B/B/S) and bass clarinetist Gareth Davis (Oiseaux-Tempête), offers the finest ambient/chamber jazz/subtle drones of a highly meditative quality. Be it solo, as member of the drone duo Nadja or B/B/S (his trio with Andrea Belfi and Erik Skodvin, aka Svarte Greiner) or in various collaborations with artists like Tim Hecker or Thisquietarmy, the Berlin-based Canadian is one of the most productive and versatile artists when it's about post rock, drone, or ambient and without doubt a true master on the guitar. In recent years Baker also starting exploring new grounds as a composer of contemporary/ensemble music -- e.g. his composition "An Instance Of Rising" was commissioned by Spó?dzielnia Muzyczna Contemporary Ensemble and Sacrum Profanum Festival for their 2017 edition. Invisible Cities marks Baker's first collaboration with Gareth Davis whose eclectic oeuvre spans contemporary classical, free improvisation, and orchestral music through to rock, noise, and electronica. The bass clarinetist is a steady member of the critically acclaimed post-rock formation Oiseaux-Tempête and A-Sun Amissa, interpreted compositions by Alvin Lucier with Machinefabriek, worked with Bernhard Lang and Peter Ablinger, performed with musicians like New York downtown veteran Elliott Sharp, Merzbow, or Robin Rimbaud (aka Scanner) and realized multimedia work with artists including Christian Marclay and Peter Greenaway. Recorded in November 2016 at Muziekhuis, Utrecht, the four tracks create a calm, even meditative atmosphere in their reduced manner that gives much room to the individual instruments/sounds, occasionally spiced up by field recordings that intensify the overall chamber jazz/ambient moods. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code.

CRETA Creta LP
Creta is the new project by Massimo Pupillo (Zu, Laniakea), electronic artist Luciano Lamanna, and string instrument virtuoso Roberto Zanisi. As a trio they explore an adventurous sonic territory between Coil in their ambient moments, dark bass pulses, and bucolic-Mediterranean string sounds. Creta is a new trio of artists coming from very different backgrounds: Roberto Zanisi is a finger picking guitar player and a virtuoso on strings of all kinds, including "exotic" instruments like the Turkish cümbüs, the Greek bouzouki, or the Albanian cifteli. Since 2003 he has been active in many contexts: he worked with Giovanni Venosta producing sound tracks for Silvio Soldini's movies, took part as soloist musician in Steward Copeland's tour "La Notte della Taranta (Night of Tarantula)", played with the American musician Amy Denio, and performed with Sainkho Namtchylak. Luciano Lamanna's main characteristics are experimentation, analog synths, vinyl, and a big love for techno. In 2015, the resident DJ at Ex Dogana, Roma and member of the Italian artist collective LSWHR launched the modular synthesizer project Balance (with Davide Ricci), and in 2017 he released the album Divus with Zu member Luca T. Mai, to name a few of Lamanna's many releases on labels like Earache, Boring Machines, Scuderia, and others. And, last but not least, there is Massimo Pupillo, highly acclaimed bass maniac with Zu, Laniakea, and in countless other constellations (amongst others Peter and Caspar Brötzmann, FM Einheit, Chris Corsano). As Creta, they create outlandish sonic pieces that blend sci-fi ambient atmospheres with dark bass pulses and bucolic-Mediterranean string instruments -- a unique and yet coherent mix of elements that adds consequently to the oeuvres of the three artists. 180 gram vinyl; Includes insert and download code.

GIBSON, KENNETH JAMES In The Fields Of Nothing LP
LP version. Includes download code. Seeking the overwhelming vibration of the genuine sound wave and its profound echo on the soul, Kenneth James Gibson has spent his career experimenting under a variety of aliases like as many brushstrokes to an ever polymorphic palette -- successively releasing as [a]pendics.shuffle, Bell Gardens, Reverse Commuter, dubLoner, Kenneth James G., KJ Gibbs, Bal Cath, Eight Frozen Modules, and Premature Wig... the list is long. Near to two years after his first incursion on Kompakt with his third studio album The Evening Falls (KOMPPA 004CD/LP, 2016), Gibson returns with In The Fields Of Nothing, his second full-length delivery for the Cologne-based imprint. A piece of intricate scales and moods, by turn streaming with the quiet flow of a small meandering rill, then suddenly veering off into an oceanic kind of tumult, In The Fields Of Nothing was conceived as a proper film soundtrack with its rhythmic ebb-and-flow and deep sense of immersion, pulling the strings to an imaginary scenario where the uncanny rubs shoulders with a minute care for the immersion and deep emotional involvement of its whole. Like entangling multiple levels of consciousness through a mille-feuille of textures, piano, and strings as well as a flurry of subtly FX-soaked instrumentals, Gibson reflects on his new album -- created and recorded right after The Evening Falls came out -- as hugely inspired by the lushly forested mountain landscapes of his home region, the bewitching Idyllwild, California. With each track being an essential petal in the narrative corolla figured by Gibson, it's a breathing forest of sounds that deploys, bearing the memories of Kenneth's early morning and late night wanderings in the wild, alone and not, with the ancient trees' vital force for main companion. An attempt at capturing a slice of these ephemeral sensations felt when striding along across the San Jacinto mountains, staring at the star-studded dome or gazing into the quiet horizon at dawn, In The Fields Of Nothing eludes the single genre encapsulation, opting for the all-embracing openness of scope as it hops from droney melodic interplays ("Her Flood") and roomy string-laden folk drifts ("Further From Home") through Ligetian webs of sound ("Thirsty Lullaby", "Fields Of Everything") and poignant threnodies ("Unblinded"), onto sorrowful pop ballads ("Far From Home") and lulling ambient scapes ("To Love A Rotting Piano", "Plastic Consequence"). Essential for fans of Stars Of The Lid, Chuck Johnson, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Visible Cloaks.

BADEN & PEDER, ASGER Furcula Episode 1 LP
Furcula is a collective work by composer Asger Baden and recording artist and actor Peder. Peder and Asger Baden work as film composers on a daily basis at their townhouse studio in central Copenhagen. They have worked for Breaking Bad, Beastie Boys, Wolfpack, amongst others. Whenever they have some time, they work on Furcula. The music is based on the acoustic colors of two very different rooms: The Village, a large orchestral studio in Copenhagen, and Vor Frue Kirke, the biggest church in Denmark which features a reverb of over seven seconds. All sounds, instruments, and samples are recorded in these two rooms and used as samples in the studio to create the music. The result is the depth and contrast between the huge reverb and very close textures that feel as though they're right next to you, scratching your skin. The result is ghostly, dark, cinematic and beautiful. Art by Rob Sato. 180 gram, green colored vinyl.

MILLION BRAZILIANS Red Rose And Obsidian LP
Million Brazilians formed in Portland, Oregon in 2006. Founding members Grant Corum and Suzanne Stone have been central to the band since its inception, while a rotating line-up backs them depending on the latest vision for the sound. The band carry out their own interpretation of a genre bending ethos that has evolved throughout the American underground. Drifting between boundless compositions, focused energetic improvisations and experimental collaborations that embrace a weird sort of transcendence. Their next installment Red Rose And Obsidian was recorded in Maine and engineered by Big Blood's Caleb Mulkerin. Both he and the band deliver a powerful yet fragile and personal release. The mythical and evocative recordings are inspired by Maine's rugged coastlines; mournful ripples of sound wash up on the shore, whilst a lonesome, at times harrowing saxophone drifts through the rolling mountains, providing unsettling melodic interludes. Electronic treatments veil organic sounds, a fleeting whistle meets spontaneously with spacey flutes, mutated rock rhythms are topped off with the soaring vocals of Suzanne Stone who leads the listeners into the magical world of the Million Brazilians.

TAKAHASHI, KUNIYUKI Early Tape Works (1986-1993) Vol. 1 LP
The Japanese producer and DJ Kuniyuki Takahashi is the subject of a retrospective compilation from Music From Memory titled Early Tape Works (1987-1993) Vol 1. Composed of two volumes, the compilations gather together a selection of tracks from a tiny run of privately released tape-only albums, highlighting a fascinating early period in Kuniyuki's musical output, one of which little is known about. After discovering the world of nightclubs in Japan around 1986, and the seemingly boundless freedom expressed there through music as well as art, Kuniyuki became inspired to experiment with electronic music. Excited by the possibilities of new music technology, he would begin to gather together a number of, at that time, reasonably accessible and inexpensive local keyboards, drum computers and recording equipment. This became for Kuniyuki a way in which to explore music not as such made for nightclubs, but certainly inspired by them. Setting up a home studio in his hometown of Saporro, Kuniyuki would record extensively during this period with the equipment he had gathered together, equipment such as Roland's Juno60, TR-606, TB-303, Casio FZ-1, Korg 770, Boss DE-200, Foster A8, and a Yamaha MT44 track cassette recorder. Driven to develop a musical language derived as much by an exploration of music technology as a desire to create new sounds, Kuniyuki was also looking to evolve the possibilities of what he refers to as a "new Oriental sound". Early Tape Works brings together two albums of material which not only highlights the evolution of Kuniyuki's own work but also of Japanese electronic music as a whole.

After touring the US west coast supporting David Kilgour and the Heavy Eights, Mike McLeod booked time at Manny Nieto's Estudio International. Joining the sessions was guest guitarist Steven Schayer, an LA-based musician who'd played in The Chills in the early '90s. Whereas previous albums featured fuzzy guitars and synthesizers, this session involved fewer layers, but greater harmonic breadth. Tom added eight-string bass and Mike used a guitar tuned down an octave. While there are fewer layers of harmonic distortion -- a characteristic component of the Shifting Sands sound -- there's still plenty of harmonic complexity, only done differently.

LUBELSKI/BILL NACE, SAMARA Samara Lubelski/Bill Nace LP
"Gorgeously psychedelic debut LP by this new guitar/violin duo, created by two of the form's great maestros. Samara Lubelski and Bill Nace are both veterans of the American sub-underground. Between them they have many projects under many names on many labels. Most recently, however, the two have been focused on string-based duo aktion, Samara in cahoots with Marcia Bassett, and Bill with Kim Gordon in Body/Head. These two ensembles explore different expanses of the genre. The Lubelski/Bassett Duo focus on the powerful beauty of drone rainbow landscapes, while Body/Head venture into dialogues dealing with subconscious dream language. On this album Bill and Samara create a hybrid between these approaches, offering textual interactions that blaze like fire. On the five tracks of their eponymous LP, Samara's violin creates a base of long form string distention, against which Bill's amp-shudder creates event surges that fill your brain with frozen images of walls caught in mid-collapse, and continents sinking into a sea. Their motion has tectonic implications. About all I can compare it to is momentary flashes of A Handful of Dust (the Bruce Russell/Alastair Galbraith unit), but the intent here seems quite different, and as mentioned before, the results feel bracingly psychedelic. Have not had a chance to spin this after an acid drop yet. Will wait for the actual LP to do that, but I'm thinking it will make for a most excellent pairing. I suggest you consider the same. Tout de suite." --Byron Coley

P. ADRIX Album Desconhecido LP
Príncipe kick off 2018 in a big way with the remarkable début by P. (as in "Producer") Adrix; a 22-year-old artist originally from Lisbon, now based in Manchester, who is equally adept at crafting full tilt, teched-out bangers as effervescent electronic soul music. His first release, Album Desconhecido is a supreme example of the innovative scenius in Angolan-Portuguese music, ratcheting the thrilling dynamics of Lisbon's ghetto bass sound with deadly edits and pressure highly compatible with the UK's jump-up jungle, drill, or soca grime vibes. Building on ground-breaking work forwarded by producer/DJs Marfox, Nervoso, Nídia, and Lycox in recent years, Album Desconhecido is jaw-droppingly fresh, even by Príncipe's up-to-the-second standards. And like Lycox, who hails from Angola and Lisbon via France, it's fair to say that P. Adrix's relative detachment from Lisbon has also led him to break the kuduro mold in scintillating new ways, effectively mapping out and recombining a glowing flux of ideas circulating the Black Atlantic diaspora. Delivered in nine short, sharp stings between the seasick drill of "Zelda Shyt" and the laser-guided trance lixx of "Viva La Raça", Adrix trades in a mix of virulent, adrenalized energy and soulful rollage that sets fire to any 'floor across the breadth of Album Desconhecido. It's clear and present in the turbulent, rug-pulling subs and febrile polyrhythms of "Bola De Cristal", and to blinding degrees in the high-wire tension and bone-freezing edits of "6.6.6", whereas the zipping flutes of "Ovni" bind roots and future with breathtaking, needlepoint incision, leaving "Sonhos" to provide a dead sweet, even romantic contrast with the melancholic meditation of "Tejo" for fine measure. After encountering Album Desconhecido, there can be little doubt that Adrix is making some of the most exciting dance music in the world right now -- a boldly expressive and immediately effective sound that drives listeners to a rare but timeless sort of rave ecstasy -- thrillingly synthetic and infused with an unmistakable lust for the dance. In the right hands, it's dangerous stuff. You've been warned! - RIYL: Nídia, DJ Marfox, Arca, Sounds of Sisso (NNT 005LP). Edition of 500.

TILBURY Execution LP
What is a groove? It is something that goes on and on, not changing much seemingly, like the growth rings exposed when you cut and fell a tree. It is no coincidence that tree rings resemble the spiral track of a record: they're both grooves of a sort. A groove is a routine, a life lived. It may not always seem like much -- a cup of bitter coffee, another day spent under the flickering fluorescent lights of an office, an overly long queue at the check-out of a suffocating supermarket. But it is also the scent of slightly burnt meat and birch by a gently flowing stream under a pink sunset, a silver fog clearing without notice to expose a starry sky and its familiar twinkling constellations, an impenetrable smile on a crowded morning train. It is the pattern exposed on the tree stump. A proper groove has ups and downs, it has drama. A good groove is a good story, a transmission into the future. Vinyl release only; Edition to 250.

TINT Ricochet Screen LP
Ricochet Screen is the first proper LP from New York based TINT (aka Zane Morris). Encompassed as an overview of his solo recordings dating as far back as 2007, Ricochet Screen unfolds as a storied arc on the obsessiveness of composition, conception, and mechanism. Culled from ad hoc recordings in vacant industrial buildings, lunchroom cafeterias, and bedroom studios, the record functions as a meditative associative collage regarding a rebounding from omnipresent glass monitors, intrusive security measures, and indeterminate barriers. Includes download code; Edition of 300.

Five dazzling remixes of Population One's classic Hippnotic Culture LP (1995) by the Detroit minimalist himself. Kicking off with a "20th Anniversary Mix" of "Rush Hour", the track that inspired the company's name. Population One, also known as Terrence Dixon, offered a first remix of his mysterious, minimal Detroit track "Rush Hour" for the celebration of the label's tenth anniversary and now provides new takes on five Hippnotic Culture album tracks. The impressive Hippnotic Culture LP was originally released in 1995 on the long defunct Utensil label, which was run by Claude Young.

LEONARDI, GIUSEPPE TBC 12"
Returning with another debut release, Second Circle's eighth record to date comes this time from young Viennese musician Giuseppe Leonardi. Performed on an array of synthesizers and experimenting with spoken word and vocals from various local singers; Giuseppe's TBC EP take you on a dance through the catacombs and out through the jungle floor with ritualistic rhythm and haunting song... At other moments Giuseppe's horizontal ambient pieces leave you gazing out on the shores of a distant half-remembered planet.

MOVE D & BENJAMIN BRUNN Songs From The Beehive 2LP
2018 repress; double vinyl version. David Moufang aka Move D and Benjamin Brunn present their collaborative full-length, Songs From The Beehive. This is more than just another chapter in deepness and soul, it is an overwhelming experience that flows deeply and rises to the top. Appreciated by fans such as Ricardo Villalobos, Jus-Ed, Efdemin, DJ Koze, Jackmate and Smallville label chiefs Julius Steinhoff and Lawrence. Ambient clusters, warm grooves, and a mentally deep sound melt together and open a portal to another world of deepness. Besides a wide range of references -- deep Detroit house, dub, classical minimal music and even jazz and disco -- Songs From The Beehive is the very essence of these two uncompromising and unconventional artists. Working out a track could start with a loop of Brunn's Nord Modular or a Moog bass line from David Moufang, based on a sweet scape or just a clear sample. It is the warmth, deepness, the fluffy grooves and the sounds that make you feel as if you are diving into a sea of ambience and rhythm. Songs From The Beehive makes the collective dream come true -- to be shared by deep and open-minded people.

SCHNEIDER TM Remainder LP+CD
Original motion picture soundtrack by Schneider TM (Dirk Dresselhaus) for Omer Fast's acclaimed first feature Remainder (2015). A heuristic creative approach characterized the collaboration between Omer Fast and Schneider TM, where music and images beautifully intertwined in a compelling sonic structure. 180 gram vinyl; Includes CD; Edition of 500.From the extensive liner notes by Thomas Venker: "Composition was about shared moments, a steady process of improvisation and interaction. They watched Remainder on loop until the sounds they were creating were an equal partner to the other aspects of the film and the life of its characters. Omer Fast describes the music as possessing the capacity to step into the gaps of a room, in between his characters who have somehow lost their own connection with society."

SHAKARCHI & STRANEUS Steal Chickens From Men And The Future From God 2x12"
2x12" version. Shakarchi & Stranéus inhabit a secret place in the universe of music, one existing at the intersection of Scandinavian poplands, Hisingen forest raves, and outer-national placelessness. Faik Shakarchi and Daniel Stranéus famously started making beats together in the Gothenburg tapas-joint coat check where they both worked as clerks. Their now ten-year-old friendship is the story of legends, their sparse vinyl output the secret love of deep house 12" enthusiasts round the globe -- the warm, vibrant sounds found on those records are a stark contrast to the stripped-down effectiveness of their marathon DJ sets, frequently heard within the more nefarious examples of GBG nightlife. The duo has also been a part of Studio Barnhus since the very beginning, first letting the label into their strange and cozy world with the Dödskallar Och Korallrev EP in 2010, effectively turning what was then a one-release operation into a record label. The distinctive sound of that early material (described by one Discogs commenter as "enlightened, naive future dub for children") has been expanded upon and further defined on their debut album Steal Chickens From Men And The Future From God, its 12 cuts lovingly selected from a plethora of works floating in-and-out of makeshift studios from Storgatan to Gamlestan over the last seven years. The record took its final form at Nacksving, same place where recent albums from Talaboman and Kornél Kovács were sonically perfected in cahoots with mix engineer Matt Karmil. The label and the artists wish to thank Statens kulturråd for their endless patience during the creation of this masterpiece.
