BROWN, RUTH Juke Box Pearls: Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean CD
"She is not only the legendary Queen of Rhythm & Blues, she also had a baby they called Rock 'n' Roll! Her fantastic voice is genre-spanning -- here is the proof! Selected songs from Ruth Brown's career first released between 1953 and 1962 are uniquely compiled here. Included are the rare re-recordings of her classics '5-10-15 Hours' and 'Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean', which she recorded in 1958. In addition to rock songs and teenage ballads, you can also hear mambo, gospel and soul roots. Three recordings for the US Philips label in the early 1960s can be considered rarities: 'Walk With Me, Lord', 'Jim Dandy' and 'Sea Of Love'. As a bonus, there are her live recordings from the 'Rhythm And Blues Revue', never before released on CD! Of course her juke box classics are also included: 'This Little Girl's Gone Rockin'!' The 36-page color booklet includes the biography written by Chicago music journalist Bill Dahl, rare photos, illustrations and discographic information. The Queen of Rhythm and Blues: This compilation of 31 songs impressively shows the extremely interesting career of Ruth Brown. Starting in the early 1950s, when she sang her way to the top of the R&B charts with her unique voice, which already had a high recognition value at that time, and thus created a solid financial basis for her label Atlantic Records, through the time in the mid-1950s, when she easily made the transition from her rather jazzy style of rhythm and blues to rock 'n' roll and teenage ballads and to early soul sounds, gospel and twist in the early '60s. Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean: The title song 'Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean' is one of Ruth Brown's greatest achievements, which she recorded several times throughout her career and which has been part of her regular live repertoire for decades."

VA Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight!: From The Vaults Of Decca & Coral Records CD
"Great country boogie from Decca Records! A successful up-tempo mixture of honky-tonk and country music from top stars like Hank Penny, Hank Garland, Grady Martin, Jimmie Davis and other fantastic, but largely unknown fellow musicians. The CD features some very successful cover versions of 'Sixty Minute Man', 'Hot Rod Rag', 'Juke Joint Johnny' and 'Bloodshot Eyes' and of course several originals. The liner notes in the extensive and illustrated booklet are written by hillbilly expert Roland Heinrich. 'Series' are playing an important role in the extensive catalog of Bear Family Records, which has grown over decades. Our Rockabilly series That'll Flat Git It!, or Rocks! with the most important stars of rock n' roll and rhythm & blues are among our successful classics. Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight! is dedicated to the often neglected or even unloved country boogie artists. The assertion that country musicians didn't have a blast before Elvis is simply wrong! Already in the '40s musicians made the walls of country dance halls shake! That's country boogie! Bear Family Records' latest release in this series focuses on recordings from the US Decca and Coral labels. The latest installment in Bear Family's groundbreaking Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight! series features the hillbilly and boogie roots of rockabilly and rock n' roll, this time with jewels from Decca and Coral labels. Included are big names like Jimmie Davis ('Cherokee Boogie'), but also artists who remained almost unknown like Jim Atkins('I'm A Ding Dong Daddy From Dumas') and Rusty Keefer with his original version of 'I'm Here To Get My Baby Out Of Jail'. With their own version, The Everly Brothers made it to position #76 in the Billboard charts in 1962! Other hillbilly rockers on this compilation include Tabby West, Hard Rock Gunter, Wayne Raney, Tommy Sosebee, Chuck Murphy, Terry Fell, Kenny Roberts and Arlie Duff."

JAY GLASS DUBS Soma 2LP
"Imagine the opposite of a snake shedding its skin: a body slithering among the debris of 21st-century music; a porous, viscid body, its skin an adhesive, lodging onto itself bits and pieces along the way. Some are scraps, rusted, discarded parts. Some are the jewels of crowns, unglued and fallen from grace, now re-attached on this makeshift contraption. Where does a body end? Does it end where these prostheses begin? Jay Glass Dubs' Soma ('body' in Greek) is a palimpsest. Look closely and you can find all sorts of DNA microarrays on the body's skin -- Bristol voices, Detroit electro hums, the amen break, the all-encompassing dub haze -- but, as with all palimpsests, they are simultaneously one and a multitude. The body lives, its prostheses live. The body moves."

URS GRAF CONSORT Uva Ursi LP
"Urs Graf Consort, a collective with a corrupted genealogy, produce trail-blazing simulacra -- songs nested within themselves, with the experimental accents of Ursonate. A protean duo operates under the name of Swiss engraver Urs Graf (1485 - c. 1529); Prune Bécheau and Adrien Bardi-Bienenstock are composers and performers for ensembles that are as varied as the motley company brought together in The Peasants War which Urs Graf depicted; Uva Ursi captured on-the-spot at acoustic vigils on the edge of amplified battlefields. Baroque violin, vièle-à-trou, bass, arranged drums, a broad spectrum of vocals, tuba, trumpet, synthesizer, spinet, sanza, shakers, bells and rattles... are all played in different concerts by: Simon Sieger, Mathias Pontévia, Joel Grip, Samuel Burjade, Sam Langer, Paul Ferbos, Pierre Borel, Adrien Perron, Rachel Ramos, Emmanuel LeGlatin, Mathieu Cahuzac, Camille Émaille, Gabriel Bristow, Antoine Hummel, Makoto Sato, Arden Day, Olivia Scemama, Pascal Sieger, Geoffroy Gesser, Malgorzata Kasprzycka, Gwladys Le Cuff, and many others. The sheer number and differing degrees of participation by these musicians and their voices avoids genre -- from passionate, rasping dialogues and the slow sedimentary effort of building the composition, to the use of six languages in various arrangements and surprise oral interventions. The same applies to the modes of recording, whether in the studio, live or by integrating direct sound recordings. The compositions on Uva Ursi -- or bearberry, a medicinal mountain plant with small white flowers -- confound expectations and established standards and attain new forms of interplay between Italian variety, free jazz, cabaret, instrumental theater, Lettrist recitation, the disruptive intensities of improvisation and noise, and walrus songs. These disjunctive synthesis do not exclude humming or toe-tapping either, even though they may initially seem untenable as a whole: the airs are captivating but any dancing only arrives in passing, and either gets bogged down by weird meter or catches a chill from deceptive disintegrations and globbed down by macabre sounds." --Gwladys Le Cuff

CLAP! CLAP! Liquid Portraits 2LP
Italian producer Clap! Clap! returns to Bristol's Black Acre with his third album, Liquid Portraits. Born and raised in Florence, Cristiano Crisci's musical career extends back to the mid-90s where he started out as a rapper, before picking up a saxophone and exploring both jazz and jazz/punk fusion with Trio Cane, and then returning to his electronic roots with A Smile For Timbuctu project. By 2008, Crisci decided to strike it out on his own as Digi G'Alessio, channeling the same hip-hop meets electronic music energies as those animating the nascent Los Angeles beat scene. Soon Crisci hit upon a new formula when he started combining samples from the African continent with energetic drum programming. The results led to the birth of Clap! Clap! in 2013, which has since been recognized and supported by the likes of Paul Simon and Gilles Peterson. Crisci released his first and second albums Tayi Bebba (ACRE 006LP, 2014) and A Thousand Skies (ACRE 009LP, 2016) via Black Acre. Clap! Clap!'s third album once again deploys his inimitable technique in fine style, however with new eyes as this new project signifies a definite shift in his work having spent the last few years learning the art of mixing which has led to some breakthroughs: "In recent years I've spent a lot of time studying essential mixing techniques. I then built an acoustic-treated room and set up my new studio. I started to convert digital into analog and vice versa with good converters and achieved sounds that I've never heard before from my speakers. This had a huge positive impact on my mixes and result on my music." Entitled Liquid Portraits, the album -- as the name suggests -- is a collection of sonic paintings, an attempt at capturing furtive, subconscious memories through sound. The tracks reference trips Crisci took and people he met -- from southern Italy to Hokkaido via the Kif Mountains of Morocco -- as well as more abstract ideas of loss, calmness, and childhood. Having been approached by Paul Simon to work on his 2016 album Stranger To Stranger after Simon discovered Tayi Bebba through his son, Clap! Clap! is no stranger to collaborations and this album features a small cast of talents, such as Italy percussionist Domenico Candellori ("Southern Dub"), Belgian artist Martha Da'ro ("Moving On"), harpist Kety Fusco ("Rising Fire"), and Piero Spitilli ("Liquid Portraits").

STILL HOUSE PLANTS Fast Edit LP
Fast Edit is the second LP by Still House Plants, a Glasgow and South London-based three-piece collective made up of Finlay Clark, David Kennedy, and Jessica Hickie-Kallenbach. As artists who started to write music together during their second year at The Glasgow School of Art, Still House Plants emerged from the eclectic scene surrounding Glasgow's Green Door Studio and soon found a home at London's Cafe OTO, where they undertook a six-month residency in 2018. Factor in a semester spent living with an emo band in Chicago and the intimate aggregation of the trio's sound heterodoxy -- an astonishing cohabitation of fractured R&B, wistful sensitivity, and harmolodic guitar -- begins to show its strands. With punk autonomy, Still House Plants navigate a similarly divergent approach to ostensibly kindred artists Linda & Sonny Sharrock or James "Blood" Ulmer, but instead cite the cut-up effect of UK garage as the impetus for their sparse treatment of chords and words as samples; stuttered, fragmented, and permuted by living drums, guitar, and Hickie-Kallenach's unmistakable husky voice. Written aided by mobile phones, dictaphones, laptop recordings of rehearsals, conversations, and live shows, Fast Edit is a collage of different fidelities and aural spaces, a palimpsest most tenderly exhibited on album centerpiece "Shy Song". Things sit on top of each other, fall over one another, or click into place, with hearts on sleeves and spirits in motion.

MACINTOSH PLUS Sick & Panic PIC. DISC
Where have the alienated masses gone after vaporwave? Producer Ramona Andra Xavier, aka Vektroid, Macintosh Plus, Laserdisc Visions, New Dreams Ltd., and a few others, is a good resource, being a reliable through line from the genre's peak to the current moment. Since her most recent studio album Floral Shoppe in 2011, Xavier has traveled further and further away from slowed-down R&B samples, challenging and complicating her own production style. But "Sick & Panic (First Mix)" is her first return to the Macintosh Plus name since 2011, and it sounds almost entirely unlike the curious complacency of Floral Shoppe. This new twelve-minute track breaks apart a few key components of vaporwave, but more readily takes influences from glitch music and the freeform design of a DJ set. But by calling this a Macintosh Plus record, you're forced to see it with a strangely human face. Between the hundreds of interrupted thoughts and microscopic silences, something organic is growing. This is the sort of music nobody is really built for, but that one learns out of idle curiosity. While we may not be androids for a few more years, this compact, biting music speaks to some metaphysical data analysis we're hardwired to be fascinated by. In a twelve-minute span, it has more than exhausted every notion and idea. It's a tactical deployment of thoughts too scattered to fit into their own slots. Which is where it wraps around again to vaporwave, because nothing ever changes. All music and art by Macintosh Plus, aka Vektroid. Deluxe hi-fidelity vinyl picture disc; Limited edition; includes digital download.

SUN RA & HIS SOLAR ARKESTRA The Magic City LP
Limited restock; LP version. "This landmark album, now being reissued in a definitive stereo edition, marks the debut of the new Cosmic Myth Records label. Cosmic Myth plans to reissue Sun Ra's Saturn Records catalog titles under official license from Sun Ra LLC, comprised of the heirs of Sun Ra. Sun Ra albums like The Magic City prove the categorical futility of 'File Under: Jazz.' When assessing the post-Chicago (1960-on) work of Ra, 'jazz' turns out to be less a genre than a journalistic and marketing convenience. Jazz has a glorious tradition. Sun Ra was schooled in it, emerged from it, and grew to transcend it (though he never abandoned it). Even the cheeky term 'Space Jazz' cannot frame the extremes to which Ra pushed his art in the mid-1960s. In this regard, The Magic City was a pinnacle. 1965 was a turbulent year for the Arkestra and its leader, and many consider The Magic City a flashpoint for that upheaval. Arkestra drummer Tommy Hunter, quoted in John Szwed's 1997 Ra bio Space is the Place, describes a typical performance of the period: 'It was like a fire storm coming off the bandstand.' On the original 1965 The Magic City LP, issued on Saturn, the monster 27-1/2 minute title track sprawled across side A. The 'Magic City' to which Ra refers was his birthplace -- Birmingham, Alabama. The term was the town's motto, emblazoned on a billboard by the train station near Sunny's childhood home, intended to reflect the city's explosive growth as a Southern industrial epicenter after the discovery of iron ore, coal, and limestone deposits. Birmingham was a place about which Sun Ra felt and expressed ambivalence: an outpost of racial segregation and grim smokestack-pocked landscapes, yet a city for which he felt twinges of nostalgia and affection. (His heirs still live in the area.) Ra customarily supervised the Arkestra's improvisational process via keyboard cues or hand signals. He was always in charge -- hence critic Simon Adams describing the title track as '27 minutes of controlled freedom.' 'The Magic City' was never performed in concert; saxophonist John Gilmore said it was 'unreproducible, a tapestry of sound.' Although shorter in scope than side A's magnum opus, the four works on The Magic City's flip side reflect the same improvisational approach, spatiality, and lack of structure. One session outtake, 'Other Worlds,' an alternate version of 'Shadow World,' is included as a bonus track on side B. For this definitive edition, historical and technical liner notes are provided by noted jazz historian Ben Young, who restored and remastered the album with his Triple Point Records partner Joe Lizzi. Both men have been recognized for their extensive work on the Grammy Nominated Albert Ayler boxset, released on John Fahey's Revenant records in 2005."

SUN RA Monorails & Satellites: Works for Solo Piano Vols. 1, 2, 3 3LP
Limited restock; Triple-LP version. Tri-gatefold cover. "Considering the monumental depth of Sun Ra's recorded oeuvre, there are surprisingly few solo piano albums. Monorails & Satellites Volumes 1 and 2 were the first commercial LPs of the artist's solo keyboard excursions. Recorded in 1966 and released on his Saturn imprint in 1968, Volume 1 featured seven idiosyncratic originals and one standard ('Easy Street') delivered in Sunny's singular manner. Volume 2 was released the following year, and contains five compositions, all originals. A third volume was prepped but shelved, and this deluxe edition marks its premiere release. As with all Cosmic Myth releases these volumes are superbly mastered, and are available with copious liners notes by renown American jazz pianist Vijay Iyer, and additional overviews by jazz historian Ben Young and producer Irwin Chusid."

VA Tokyo Nights: Female J-Pop Boogie Funk 1981 to 1988 2LP
2020 repress; double LP version. "Following successful disco excavation from the Caribbean to South Africa, Boston-based label Cultures of Soul booked a first class ticket to Narita to bring you the latest release, Tokyo Nights: Female J-Pop Boogie Funk: 1981 to 1988. This compilation presents 12 of the most memorable and sought-after songs of the era recorded by female artists. The music is a reflection of the unbridled optimism, technological achievement, excess and exuberance of Bubble-era Japan. More than catchy melodies and funky baselines, these are reflections of a time when Japan was the center, and future of the world. The Bubble can be characterized as an endless, extravagant party where personal and corporate wealth soared through the explosion of real estate and stock prices. Scores of young Japanese men and women moved to cities in search of affluence, transforming them into neon wonderlands. Changes in morals, values and gender roles followed suit. Prosperity leads to indulgence, and the taste for nightlife, from flashy restaurants to glitzy discotheques, was unquenchable. A soundtrack to this new, lavish lifestyle was necessary and the latest sound, City Pop (urban pop music for those with urban lifestyles), epitomized these attitudes. While influenced by American R&B and boogie, elements of fusion, YMO style Technopop, and adult-oriented rock (AOR) are front and center. Sung primarily in Japanese (with a word or two of English sprinkled in), City Pop is Japanese music for Japanese people. Producers like Tatsuro Yamashita, Toshiki Kadomatsu, and Haruomi Hosono were quick to embrace the latest studio equipment and technology. Synthesizers like the Yamaha DX7, Roland Juno-60, ARP Quadra, Moog Polymoog and Oberheim OB-8, as well as drum machines like the Linndrum, were prevalent. Digital reverb was applied liberally. Compiled by Eli Cohen (Alliance Upholstery) and Deano Sounds (Cultures of Soul), Tokyo Nights includes tracks by Hitomi Tohyama, Junko Ohashi, Mizuki Koyama, Kaoru Akimoto, Aru Takamura, Mariko Tone, Rie Murakami, RA MU, Kikuchi Momoko and Yumi Seino. Each selection celebrates the unique traits and meticulous production that define the sound. Think sandy beaches and metropolitan skylines; illumination and romance. Embrace the feeling of movement, from a coastal highway stretching towards the horizon or the city sprawling into the future. Turn on the hi-fi and slip into these Tokyo Nights."

SPARKLE Sparkle CD
"In a genre that has classically been driven primarily by hot twelve-inches, it can sometimes be hard to find a disco album that delivers the goods from end to end -- let alone a disco LP that could be described as 'perfect.' Does such an animal even exist? We're pretty sure it has to, and we can probably think of a few candidates ourselves. Cultures of Soul Records presents Sparkle's self-titled album which many disco aficionados would put into this category. Sparkle was a female vocal trio from Connecticut, assembled by the producer Harold Sargent, erstwhile drummer of the sterling funk band Wood, Brass & Steel, and creator of manifold drum breaks that would go on to be sampled for decades. Originally released in 1979, the album and the group are fittingly titled as the music is a scintillating, radiant collection of shimmering disco and dazzling funk, performed by Too Much Too Soon -- the multiracial R&B band that featured Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken, the writing/production team that would discover Rihanna and power her career to global dominance fifteen years later. Also on hand is musical prodigy Rahni Harris, whose Sargent-assisted club classic 'Six Million Steps' is also included on the album. The result is an album that by far exceeds the sum of its parts, delivering a truly transcendent disco experience."

MOORE, THURSTON Trees Outside The Academy (Remastered) CD
Originally released in 2007. This was Thurston Moore's first solo outing since 1995's Psychic Hearts. Remastered. From original 2007 press release: "Thurston recorded primarily on acoustic guitar and bass, laying down the core of the tunes with drummer compatriot Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley and violinist Samara Lubelski, a noted player from MV/EE and The Golden Road, Hall of Fame, and other awesome gatherings as well as solo artiste. Thurston grabbed John Agnello to record and mix the sucker after having a helluva good time with the bro from working on Sonic Youth's 2006 killer Rather Ripped. They decided to work in Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis's Bisquiteen studio (the top floor in J's Amherst house actually) where Dino did their Beyond album (2007). This worked out very nicely as it allowed Thurston to yell down the stairs every time he needed a shredding guitar solo and J would trundle up, plug in and BURN. Other guests on Trees Outside... are Christina Carter, she of Charalambides, and she of the most beatific, beautific voice on land, sea, and air. One track called 'Honest James' has Thurston and Christina singing duet against a single acoustic guitar and it is a naked groove. The otherworldly Canadian musician Andrew Macgregor aka "Gown" plays some spectacularly understated and incredible guitar and Sunburned Hand of The Man's John Moloney takes over the drum stool to absolutely flail on the pit snarling 'Wonderful Witches'. And then there's the 20 seconds or so of primal noise wave courtesy of American noise underground genius Leslie Keffer on Off Work. Most of the tunes are lyric driven but there are a couple of majestic instrumentals like Trees Outside The Academy, which brings the album to a musical and breathless close. There's also some weird cassette tape that Thurston found at his mom's of him at 13 years old in the early '70s making some kind of sound-theatre."

MICALIZZI, FRANCO Da Corleone A Brooklyn CD
For Da Corleone A Brooklyn, Franco Micalizzi composed and conducted an original soundtrack which contains all the elements of a genre that still has a large audience of loyal enthusiasts, even after decades. The nostalgic main theme is performed by an orchestra with wind and rhythms typical of this genre. It is introduced in the opening credits and reprised throughout the OST. There is no shortage of suspense or action music following the storyline and there are interventions with a marranzano (an instrument from Sicily). Maestro Micalizzi wrote a second recurring theme, a motif with a pop flavor which is reprised in several fast and slow orchestral versions. For this album, the stereo master tapes of the original recording session were used. Directed in 1979 by Umberto Lenzi, Da Corleone A Brooklyn stars: Maurizio Merli, Mario Merola, Laura Belli, Van Johnson, Biagio Pelligra, Venantino Venantini, Sonia Viviani, Tom Felleghy, Nando Marineo, Salvatore Billa, Giovanni Cianfriglia. After the assassination of Salvatore Santoro in Rome, commissioner Giorgio Berni is sent to Palermo to work on the case with the local commissioner Danova since there are good reasons to suspect that the mafia is involved. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Sturges of the New York Police Department stops a man who claims his name is Vito Ferrando, a suspected drug trafficker without a residence permit. Sturges sends a report to Palermo stating that Ferrando is actually the mafia boss Michele Barresi, a man who has repeatedly escaped the law. Barresi is cleared of charges for the crime in Rome, but people close to him are killed, including his girlfriend Liana Scala, and Francesco Santoro. One of the assassins, Salvatore Scalia, who is Liana's brother and Barresi's former trusted man, falls into the hands of the police during an armed conflict. Giorgio Berni obtains permission from his superiors to transfer the prisoner to America so that his testimony can be used to frame Barresi. The journey is full of dangers as the mafiosi try to eliminate the incriminating witness. Berni hides out at his ex-wife Paola's house and then manages to get to New York, but he cannot prevent Scalia's death. But Scalia has left a written testimony.

MICALIZZI, FRANCO Da Corleone A Brooklyn LP
LP version.

WERBA, MARCO Il Delitto Mattarella CD
Marco Werba on his soundtrack for Il Delitto Mattarella (2019): "This is Aurelio Grimaldi's fourth film which I've had the pleasure to work for. I met Aurelio thanks to Antonella Salvucci and Raffaele Mallucci and we worked together for the first time on the historical drama Anita, una vita per Garibaldi (2007), an intense movie that describes the love story between Brazilian rebellious Anita and Italian hero, Giuseppe Garibaldi. We then continued our collaboration with Il sangue è caldo di Bahia (2014) and Controtempo (2016). This new film, Il Delitto Mattarella, marks the return of Aurelio Grimaldi with an important political movie, with a storyline dense of political plots, mafia and right-wing subversive groups that brought terror in the Italy of the '80s. Specifically, mafia, that turned out to be the main culprit for the death of many honest men that tried to stop the advancement of 'Cosa Nostra', the criminal organization that grew within the Sicilian social fabric. Aurelio is a sensitive director, who knows how to enhance music, measuring it in key moments. For this movie I worked again with Aurelio Grimaldi's faithful collaborator, Maria Soldatini, who wrote the additional music of the film, and Louis Siciliano kindly gave us a nice composition that we used in two scenes of the film. We recorded the film score in Gioia Tauro with the Orchestra del Teatro Cilea of Reggio Calabria, in Antonello Bruzzese's Metro Records Studio. I've had the pleasure of working with top level soloists such as Pasquale Faucitano (violino), Pierluigi Marotta (cello), Giampiero Cannata (horn), Riccardo Rocchi (guitar), and Federica Inson (flute). I also had two valid collaborators: Luca Poletti (music assistant) and Enrico Fallea (copyist). The film score of Il Delitto Mattarella contains an obsessive rhythmic theme ('L'Aquila'), an intriguing and turbid composition ('Corleone'), a theme linked to the main character ('Piersanti Mattarella') and another one that describes the Sicily of the '80s." Also features compositions by Henry Purcell.

RUDE & JAKOB SKOTT DUO, MARTIN The Discipline of Assent LP
Martin Rude (Sun River) and Jakob Skøtt (Causa Sui) team up for a genre-defying record that was recorded during an exceptional session on March 3rd, 2020. Martin brought his double bass, acoustic and baritone guitar into the studio of Causa Sui, where Jakob's drums were already miked and prepped by soundwiz Jonas Munk, freshly tuned from the new Causa Sui recordings. The music they played ranges from sprawled out pre-fusion electric jazz to psychedelic folk ragas. After the sessions, the hours of free-floating music was edited and dubbed by Jakob Skøtt into shorter cohesive segments, but maintaining the improvised vibe of these first takes. It is a record that pays homage to the great innovators of jazz: Miles and Trane (or perhaps more fittingly their peak-drummers: Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, and Elvin Jones), as well as Mingus at his fiercest or Sun Ra at his most exotic. Not merely a tribute, the album doubles down with guitar pickings ala John Fahey and Sandy Bull, as well as sparse layers of oddly-tempered mallet percussion and synthesizers. But perhaps the closest reference isn't something of a certain place in time, but rather a free-flowing ethos of stoic proportions: letting happen what it may, turning the accidents and mistakes along the way into something vital. TOXIC AVENGER, THE Midnight Resistance 2LP
Midnight Resistance is the The Toxic Avenger's fourth album. And undoubtedly the most solar, where his musical signature is the most accomplished, integrating all his influences, from kinematic electro to pop, from song to enjoyable replay of house '90s, from neo-classical piano revisited to the current synth-pop. An album where the technique is less conspicuous, but where the emotion is more simple and direct. It is also the most open of all his albums, with real pop singles assumed as the heady "Lies" (featuring Look Mum No Computer), the '80s nostalgic ballad "Mandala" (featuring Ornette), or the pop song sweet bitter "Rent Boy" (featuring Jay- Jay Johanson). The musical turn of Toxic Avenger is also reflected in the very emotional song "I Need You" the unifying power of the introductory song "Americana", captivating it "On Sight" while keeping a crunchy production on a few songs like "Midnight Resistance" or "?????? ????" ("Black Summer" in Russian), as markers for the continuity of the "Toxic" sound. One of the jewels of the album is the collaboration with Maxence Cyrin on the very delicate track "On My Own". And the surprise of this album is to find Toxic Avenger singing himself to sing his first song, "Les Heures". Finally, two somewhat special guests come to close this album, the aerial and hedonistic participation of Simone on the track "Falling Apart" and the spoken and always offbeat flow of Diamond Deuklo on the aptly named "L'Avenir d'Avant" where the absurd here becomes an art. His learning for over two years on modular synths guided his new research into sounds, making synthesizers more "alive", more organic. Finally, it is necessary to underline a real work of "sound surgeon" in the processing of the voices, complex but fluid in its rendering, adding again a strong melodic research always in the service of songs. Blue and red vinyl; gatefold sleeve.

BAKERLOO Bakerloo CD
"Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly re-mastered and expanded edition of the classic self-titled 1969 album by Bakerloo. This progressive blues outfit formed in Staffordshire in 1968 and comprised Dave 'Clem' Clempson (vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboards), Keith Baker (bass) and Terry Poole (drums). Originally known as The Bakerloo Blues Line, the band emerged at the tail end of the British Blues boom, and soon expanded their musical horizons with Clempson's exceptional guitar playing ability at the heart of their live shows. After shortening their name to Bakerloo, the band signed to Birmingham promoter Jim Simpson's Big Bear stable of artists, embarking on 'The Big Bear Ffolly Tour' in the Autumn of 1968 with fellow acts Locomotive, Earth (later to change their name to Black Sabbath) and Tea and Symphony. Soon after Bakerloo had the distinction of supporting the newly formed Led Zeppelin at their first gig at The Marquee Club on October 18th 1968. The band signed to Tuesday Productions and recorded a sole eponymous album which was released on Harvest Records in November 1969. A promising live attraction, their career ended when Clem Clempson departed the group to replace James Litherland in Colosseum in 1970. This Esoteric Recordings release features five bonus tracks (including a B-side of a single and four studio out-takes), a booklet that fully restores the original album artwork and a new essay."

JELINEK, JAN Tierbeobachtungen LP
Repressed. Faitiche presents Jan Jelinek's album Tierbeoachtungen on vinyl for the first time, originally released on Scape in 2006. The album's six tracks took their cues from Jelinek's live concerts of that period: dense, slowly unfolding loop improvisations made with a laptop, various effect pedals, and miniature synthesizers. It is music that floats in a semi-conscious state between dream and awakening, always slightly mysterious, leaving traces that lead directly to the psychedelic-cosmic music of the kraut era. Includes download code.In his release notes for Tierbeobachtungen at the time, the late lamented Martin Büsser wrote (2006): "The animal is experiencing a renaissance in music. It provides a reflective surface for our notion of the unbridled and irrational, of that Other the philosophers Deleuze/Guattari -- as part of their 'Animalisation' -- called the embodiment of artistic deliverance. And yet, how much of a liberation can art actually tolerate? To what extent can music truly throw off its fetters without descending into chaos? Jan Jelinek's album title provides a first hint of this development: Tierbeobachtungen (animal observations) is his fourth album for ~scape, and it addresses the issue of release and liberation. Recorded almost in transit, while preparing his move to a new studio, the tracks reveal and relish in their improvisational character, and drifting, lost sound -- yet they never lose sight of their underlying structure. Tierbeobachtungen might be Jelinek's freest and most personal work, with simply arranged tracks based on four to five layered and modulated loops, while his own studio equipment provides the main sampling sources, from synthesizer and guitaret to vibraphonette. Jelinek takes on the role of observer on this record, with a level of reflection remaining audible throughout. However, this is by no means intellectual, distanced music -- Jelinek leads us straight into a thicket, an acoustic jungle where sumptuous splendour meets the uncanny. A long tradition of psychedelic music pervades the recordings -- Amon Düül, Cluster, My Bloody Valentine -- yet whatever musical memories might vie for our attention, these are no clear-cut references, just loose associations. . . Similar to the pioneers of industrial music, like Cabaret Voltaire or Zoviet France, who experimented with field recordings to challenge Western listening habits, Tierbeobachtungen takes us to new, unknown territories and brims with sounds that defy geographic or stylistic classification, not unlike the semi-conscious state between dream and awakening. FUJITA & JAN JELINEK, MASAYOSHI Bird, Lake, Objects LP
2020 repress. LP version. The Faitiche label presents a collaboration between Berlin-based vibraphonist Masayoshi Fujita and Faitiche label-head/electronic musician Jan Jelinek. Queried on his favorite word in the German language, Masayoshi Fujita will pick "getragen" for its semantic signifiers, its inherent sense of "expansive, deep, quiet and sombre." And yet, "getragen" leaves plenty of room for interpretation. Does this definition apply to Bird, Lake, Objects? Only to a limited extent. Compared to previous Faitiche releases, Bird, Lake, Objects is certainly the most "getragen" of them all. From a distance, these tracks seem rather introspective, cautious even -- and reflect the recording situation: deliberately pared down, reduced to a single microphone in space and a separate track for all other instruments -- each movement and action chronicled by the treacherous mike. This presented multiple issues and external influences during the recording process: fire engine screams, street noise and footfalls became part of the recordings and part of their improvisatory nature. Each movement required careful orchestration, fully aware of its irrevocable nature. Space itself was always present and an audible entity, except on "Stripped To RM" (recorded without a microphone or vibraphone track). This record is a contemplative, aural meditation combining washes of ever-expanding electronic crackles and pulses with the gentle, droning resonance of the vibraphone. Masayoshi prepared his instrument with pieces of metal, strips of foil and similar objects. The resulting new sounds, akin to distortions, help to expand the vibraphone spectrum without eroding the instrument's intrinsic character or even abandoning it altogether. Besides his extremely reduced and deliberate style of playing, it is this aural redefinition that makes Masayoshi Fujita's craft so remarkable. Masayoshi's wood prints on the cover and booklet of Bird, Lake, Objects present concise, abstract and monochrome landscapes that are a visual complement to this music.

FEST, MANFREDO Brazilian Dorian Dream CD
Far Out Recordings present a reissue of Manfredo Fest's Brazilian Dorian Dream, originally released in 1976. Legally blind from birth, Brazilian keyboard player, composer, and bandleader Manfredo Fest learnt to read music in braille and began studying classical music at a young age. By 17 he had fallen in love with jazz (particularly the music of fellow blind pianist George Shearing) before becoming swept up in Rio's emergent bossa nova movement in the sixties. Moving to the States in 1967 where he would go on to work with fellow countryman Sergio Mendes, Fest recorded and self-released Brazilian Dorian Dream in 1976, enlisting Thomas Kini (bass), Alejo Poveda (drums, percussion), and Roberta Davis (vocals). Like a turbo-powered, intergalactic elevator ride, Brazilian Dorian Dream builds on the principle of the modal diatonic scales of the Dorian mode, with influences of Brazilian rhythms, North American jazz and funk, and music of the European baroque and romantic era. The coming together of these intergenerational and intercontinental styles coupled with Fest's visionary use of the Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, Arp, and Moog synthesizers (plus a whole load of effects units), makes for an album light-years ahead of its time. The miraculous wordless vocals of American jazz singer Roberta Davis are nailed so tightly alongside Manfredo's keys and mind-bending synths that it sounds almost alien. On the album's liner notes, Fest preaches Davis's ability highlighting how hard it is to sing such precise intervals so accurately. One of the tracks on which the vocals shine brightest is space funk stepper "Jungle Cat", which features hard funky drums, freaky synth lines and expert Rhodes comping. The track builds up and up before releasing into the unmistakable scat melody in the chorus. A few years after releasing Brazilian Dorian Dream, Fest recorded and released his Manifestations album in 1979, featuring "Jungle Kitten": a new dancefloor focused variation on "Jungle Cat". At around 140 BPM "Jungle Kitten" was possibly deemed too fast for statside dance floors, which explains why it never got a US 12" release. But the track became something of an underground hit at jazz dance clubs and all-dayers across the UK in the '80s and as a result it has probably become Fest's most well-known track since. Brazilian Dorian Dream is almost impossible to find on vinyl. Remastered.

HOWLIN' WOLF The Howlin' Wolf Album LP
2020 repress. "It's not often that an album disavowed by its own author at the time of release goes on to become considered a modern classic. Yet that's exactly what happened with Chicago blues legend Howlin' Wolf's 1969 LP The Howlin' Wolf Album, a release that has since attained mythical status due to the controversy behind it. Released on Cadet Records, a subsidiary of legendary imprint Chess Records, The Howlin' Wolf Album was a radical experiment for a well-established artist: attempt to integrate electric instruments and psychedelic arrangements into his revered signature blues sound. The result was an album that Wolf himself initially disregarded on the now infamous cover, but one that has won a special place amongst dedicated music aficionados thanks to its unique mix of traditional blues and electric rock elements. Get On Down's reputation for high quality reissues continues with The Howlin' Wolf Album, which features a special Stoughton vinyl pressing with audio remastered from the original analog tapes for optimum sound quality and comes packaged in a paste-on style jacket featuring the album's famous original artwork."

AHMED, SHARHABIL The King Of Sudanese Jazz CD
"We're super happy to announce our 13th release by Sharhabil Ahmed, the actual King of Sudanese Jazz (he actually won that title in a competition in the early 1970s). Sonically it sounds very different from what Jazz is understood to sound like outside of Sudan. It's an incredible unique mix of rock'n'roll, funk, surf, traditional Sudanese music and influences from Congolese sounds. Original copies of Sharhabil recordings are often hard to find, so we're happy they will now be widely available. 'Argos Farfish' which was featured on our last comp amassed close to 400,000 plays already. Sharhabil was born in 1935 and he is the founding father of the Sudanese Jazz scene. His aim was to modernize Sudanese music by bringing it together with western influences and instrumentation like he summarized it himself in a 2004 interview for 'Al Ahram Weekly': '[...]Haqiba music, you know, was traditional vocal music with little accompaniment beyond a tambourine. When our generation came in the 1960s, we came with a new style. It was a time of worldwide revolution in music. In Europe, the rhythms of swing and tango were being replaced by jazz, samba, rock- and-roll. We were influenced by this rejuvenation in Sudan, too. I started out by learning to play the oud and traditional Sudanese music, and got a diploma from the music institute of Khartoum University. But my ambition was to develop something new. For this, the guitar seemed like the best instrument. Western instruments can approximate the scales of Sudanese music very well. After all, a lot of Western music is originally from Africa. I have absorbed different influences, from traditional Sudanese rhythms to calypso and jazz, and I hold them together in my music with no difficulty.' Referring to its sonic appearance, Sudanese jazz hasn't too much in common with the western idea of jazz. Sharhabil's sound feels more like a unique combination of surf, rock n roll, funk, Congolese music and East African harmonies a.o. So, it kind of made sense to me, while visiting him in Sudan, to see the records he kept over the years: 2 of his own and 2 by Mulatu Astatke signed to him, further proving the influence of Ethiopian and other neighboring countries. In fact, Sharhabil was not just one of many Sudanese Jazz artist. He is the king of Jazz, literally, since in he won a competition over other artists for that title."

2019 release. The music of Phil Minton and Veryan Weston consists of a unique combination of different elements. From free improvisation to the song form in its broadest sense. After three beautiful studio albums Minton and Weston are back with a new program of orchestral arrangements and the result is outstanding. The music flows with great pathos through new renditions of their own most memorable compositions alongside with pieces by Eric Dolphy, Luc Ex, Lindsay Cooper, Jacques Brel, and others. The intense voice of Phil Minton along with Weston's formidable orchestral arrangements drive the whole ensemble through an extraordinary program of contemporary, romantic, eccentric music.

KLANGFORUM WIEN Scelsi Revisited 2CD
"In the project Scelsi Revisited Scelsi's legendary tape material is for the first time reflected in the medium of art: seven composers (Ragnhild Berståd, Georg Friedrich Haas, Fabien Lévy, Tristan Murail, Michael Pelzel, Michel Roth, Nicola Sani) were commissioned by Klangforum Wien to create new works from Scelsi's tape music. The results on this album are quite heterogeneous: they range from the meticulous analysis of the source material and its transfer into the emerging composition to free artistic commentaries. Scelsi Revisited is a conceptual extension of the historical collective working method, thereby accentuating the plural: Scelsi, c'est nous!"

SEMANTICS Semantics CD
"Semantics was a jazz supergroup consisting of Elliott Sharp, Ned Rothenberg and Samm Bennett. Elliott Sharp, born in Ohio in 1951, began playing the piano at the age of six and started to perform concerts two years later. He soon gave up the piano, first in favor of the clarinet and later for the guitar. Sharp became intrigued with all types of experimental music, from contemporary classical to free jazz and sophisticated rock. He studied anthropology at Cornell University, where he played in a band and took an electronics class with synthesizer inventor Robert Moog. Ned Rothenberg is an American multi-instrumentalist who was born in 1956 in Massachusetts. He has been internationally acclaimed for both his solo and ensemble music, presented for the past 33 years on 5 continents. He performs primarily on alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, and the shakuhachi -- an endblown Japanese bamboo flute. His solo work utilizes an expanded palette of sonic language, creating a kind of personal idiom all its own. Samm Bennett was born in 1957 in Alabama. In 1977 he moved to Boston, a town that seemed to offer broader possibilities for a young musician eager to play and grow and try new things. It was there that he was first exposed to African drumming styles, mostly through attending weekly drum ensemble workshops led by Boston underground percussion legend Syd Smart. In late 1980, he went to Nigeria, West Africa. Traveling with a friend who introduced him to a family in Benin City, Nigeria, he remained there as their guest for six months, making daily trips to the home of drum master Idemudia Izevbihen. Later Bennett lived in Brussels and played many solo shows. The short-lived Semantics were active in the middle of the 1980s and released two albums. The self-titled debut has so far never been released on CD. It is a masterpiece of contemporary jazz with a rock attitude added for good measure."

COMELADE & MARC HURTADO, PASCAL Larme Secrete CD
"Pascal Comelade was born in Montpellier, France. After living in Barcelona for several years, he made his first album, under the name of Fluence, influenced by electronic music and by the group Heldon. Since 1980 Comelade releases music under his own name. Ever since, his music has become more acoustic and is often characterised by the sounds of toy instruments, used as solo-instruments or as an integral part of the sound of his group, the Bel Canto Orchestra. Marc Hurtado is one half of the experimental French duo Étant Donnés. Active since the end of the 1970s, the group has released several albums, also collaborating with people like Alan Vega, Lydia Lunch, Michael Gira or Genesis P-Orridge. Hurtado has also released several solo albums under his own name, again collaborating with various artists, and has toured with Lydia Lunch celebrating the music of Suicide. Larme Secrete is the first time that Comelade and Hurtado have collaborated. Larme Secrete is the sound of an electric shock, the sound of two hearts beating at the same rhythm, united in the pulsating and hypnotic music of Pascal Comelade melted in the fire of the celestial poems of Marc Hurtado. Synthesizers, guitars, drums, organ, piano, sound loops, whispering, flying, screaming voices transport you in a blazing sonic dream."

NAMTCHYLAK/NED ROTHENBERG/DIEB13, SAINKHO Antiphonen CD
"Sainkho Namtchylak is a singer originally from Tuva, an autonomous republic in the Russian Federation just north of Mongolia. She is known for her Tuvan throat singing or Khöömei. Her music encompasses avant-jazz, electronica, modern composition and Tuvan influences. Once the Soviet Union had collapsed, she moved to Vienna, making it her base, although she traveled widely, working in any number of shifting groups and recording a number of discs that revolved around free improvisation. Amongst them are collaborations with Evan Parker, Ned Rothenberg, The Moscow Composers Orchestra and Wolfgang Puschnig. Ned Rothenberg is an American multi-instrumentalist who was born in 1956 in Massachusetts. He has been internationally acclaimed for both his solo and ensemble music, presented for the past 33 years on 5 continents. He is a turntablist, hacker, filmmaker, autodidact, composer, collageur and conscientious copyright objector. Since the late 1980s he has explored the possibilities of vinyls, cassettes, harddisks, IP-protocols etc. as material for collages and compositions. Using various playing techniques and his own lathe cutter, he has pushed the development of turntables as instruments aside 'classical DJ techniques' and developed his very unique style. Antiphonen was the first time this trio played together. Kazuhisha Uchihashi from Japanese group Altered States co-curated the festival and 2019 and invited the musicians to perform together."

HAYWARD, CHARLES Crossfade Estate CD
"Crossfade Estate was a special, distinct project. It was made in November 2005. Recorded in 10 hours. Edited, mixed and collaged over 18 months. It was a development of Charles Hayward's long-term relationship with The Albany in Deptford, London. They asked him to push their recently installed digital recording suite and see what he could make. The approach was a step further from the series Accidents+Emergencies which Hayward had curated in the late 1990's. It was a pulling together of different musics and strategies and the resultant material. Hayward thought of it like a soap opera, with characters reappearing in different combinations and in different scenarios, the market square, the living room, the mechanics' garage. But instead of people, themes and riffs and rhythms so that the music was constantly at the crossroads, at intersection points of its own devising. Charles Hayward, Ashleigh Marsh, Nick Doyne-Ditmas, Sean O'Hagan, Rob Mills, Orphy Robinson, Chris Cornetto, Sharon Gal, Simon King are playing on the album. Previously unreleased and now made available for the very first time!"

MINTON & DIEB13, PHIL With, Without CD
"Phil Minton is a jazz/free-improvising vocalist and trumpeter. He is a highly dramatic baritone who tends to specialize in literary texts: he has sung lyrics by William Blake with Mike Westbrook's group, Daniil Kharms and Joseph Brodsky with Simon Nabatov, and extracts from James Joyce's Finnegans Wake with his own ensemble. Minton is perhaps best known, however, for his completely free-form work, which involves 'extended techniques' that can be as unsettling as they can be mesmerising. His vocals often include the sounds of retching, burping, screaming, and gasping, as well as childlike muttering, whining, crying and humming; he also has an ability to distort his vocal cords to produce two notes at once. Dieter Kova?i? aka Dieb13 is an Austrian improvisational musician who mostly works with turntables. Since the late 1980s he has been experimenting with cassette players, vinyl records, CDs and harddiscs. He has a duo with Billy Roisz which combines electronic music with experimental filmmaking. Their first collaborative album has been recorded live at various festivals, including Wels Unlimited, Disobedience Ljubljana or Instants Chavires, Montreuil."

"The Heliocentrics' albums are all confounding pieces of work. Drawing equally from the funk universe of James Brown, the disorienting asymmetry of Sun Ra, the cinematic scope of Ennio Morricone, the sublime fusion of David Axelrod, Pierre Henry's turned-on musique concrète, and Can's beat-heavy Krautrock, they have -- regardless of the label on which they've released their music -- pointed the way towards a brand new kind of psychedelia, one that could only come from a band of accomplished musicians who were also obsessive music fans. Drummer Malcolm Catto and bassist Jake Ferguson are the Heliocentrics' masterminds and producers, and they are obsessive weirdos in today's musical climate, searching, progressive humans who are often out-of-time with current trends. They have been playing together for nearly two decades and their collective drive is to find an individual voice. The Heliocentrics search for it in an alternate galaxy where the orbits of funk, jazz, psychedelic, electronic, avant-garde and 'ethnic' music all revolve around 'The One.' MINYO CRUSADERS & FRENTE CUMBIERO Minyo Cumbiero (From Tokyo to Bogota) 12"
Tokyo-based ten-piece and wild Japanese folk-song fusionists, Minyo Crusaders join forces with Colombian cumbia radicals Frente Cumbiero on the history-making Minyo Cumbiero, the first ever Japanese-Colombian collaborative release, and one that fuses ancient Japanese folk songs with heavyweight Colombian styles. Recorded across two days in Bogota in August 2019 Minyo Cumbiero includes versions of an ancient Japanese rap tune, modern cumbia standard and 1980s Chinese computer game theme-song and captures a thrilling exchange between two radical and triumphant groups. Japan and Colombia may be cultural opposites on different sides of the world, yet the countries are bursting at the seams musically and on this EP both groups stridently drive their respective music cultures and histories in exciting new directions with powerhouse horn sections, rippling dub basslines, and rampant Afro-Latin polyrhythms creating carnival grooves, released here via London-based label, Mais Um. For an uncompromisingly contemporary and inventive take on traditional Colombian cumbia, look no further than Frente Cumbiero. Headed by Colombian songwriter and producer Mario Galeano Toro (also a founding member of Ondatrópica and Los Pirañas), the Bogota-based crew have spearheaded Colombia's thriving new-look cumbia movement for well over a decade, fusing cumbia rhythms and bass weight electronics with releases featuring collaborations with the legendary London-based dub producer, Mad Professor and US-based Kronos Quartet. Following the release of their acclaimed debut album, Echoes of Japan in 2019 (MAIS 036CD/LP), Minyo Crusaders -- or MinCru as their Japanese fans know them as -- have won-over a global audience with their unique take on Japanese folk music. A debut European tour in 2019 saw main-stage performances at Le Guess Who and Transmusicales and was soon followed by shows at WOMADelaide and WOMAD New Zealand in early 2020 that saw audiences intoxicated by their mix of traditional Japanese folk songs (min'y?) and Afro-funk, Thai pop, Ethio-jazz and reggae. Fronted by singers "Freddy" Tsukamoto (his nickname comes from his hero, Freddie Mercury) and Megu, with guitarist and bandleader Katsumi Tanaka, the members of the ten-piece are drawn from Tokyo's vibrant and diverse jazz and Afro-Latin scenes.

PUKWANA AND THE SPEARS, DUDU Dudu Pukwana and the Spears 2LP
"Dudu Pukwana and the Spears recorded in London, but were only ever released in South Africa. The story behind this extraordinary music and the famous names involved are documented in this extended edition of Dudu Pukwana's debut album. In 1964 the Blue Notes left South Africa to play at the Antibes Jazz Festival in France, and more or less stayed away forever after. In January 1969 alto saxophonist Dudu Pukwana went home briefly along with producer Joe Boyd who persuaded Johannesburg record company Trutone to license the recordings for release in South Africa. Matsuli Music's discovery of a second unpublished London recording session, following Dudu's South Africa visit, reveals hitherto unknown music, and history. In addition to Richard Thompson (Fairport Convention) and Joe Mogotsi (Manhattan Brothers) putting their own spin on mbaqanga hits like Sibuyile, the Blue Notes' fabled Church Mouse and an early version of Andromeda can also be heard. With Pukwana's explosive style and energy evident throughout, this album fills in an exciting and important lost piece of the Blue Notes' and South Africa's exile jazz story."

MHLONGO, BUSI Urban Zulu LP
"Urban Zulu changed South Africa's music forever, rewiring Zulu migrant roots music for the 21st Century. Busi Mhlongo's powerful voice and challenging lyrics soar over driving bass lines and glittering guitars of an all-star South African maskanda line-up, backed by a multi-national cast including Lokua Kanza, Brice Wassy, Jacques Djeyim and Will Mowatt. With this album Busi Mhlongo subverted and then claimed Maskanda music's previously patriarchal space, voicing a new social blues narrative. Her songs cut to the essence of simple joys, unrequited love, abuse in the name of love, and month-end money blues. Topping charts in Europe and South Africa, Urban Zulu struck critical and commercial success. Yehlisan'umoya Ma-Afrika 'creates a sensation of being inevitable because the riffs are so organic, it feels like it would be a crime against nature if they fell together any other way' (AllMusic). 'We Baba Omncane' became the sound track for a global Adidas campaign, while a later re-mix became a smash hit for Black Coffee." "Unlike many African music albums produced at the time, Urban Zulu is tight, with every inch of the vocals worked over to powerful, husky perfection. Rarely pretty but exquisitely detailed, Urban Zulu is intense, angry, and bewitching." --Jean Barker

FOXX AND THE MATHS, JOHN Howl CD
John Foxx And The Maths return with a new line-up on their fifth studio album, Howl. Former Ultravox guitarist Robin Simon joins Foxx, Benge (Ben Edwards), and Hannah Peel after previously guesting with The Maths at their debut Roundhouse show in 2010. Work on the album began back in April 2019 at Benge's Memetune studios in Cornwall with Rob Simon involved right from the start, his contributions instantly mutating the original ideas into something new. Foxx who first worked with Simon on Ultravox's Systems Of Romance album in 1978. Forward-looking, intuitive and risk taking from the start (Critic Mark Fisher summed them up as "a glimpse into another world in which rock 'n' roll was invented on Moogs") their passion for the strange sounds and atmospheres they seduce and rip from the machines in Benge's studio has inspired a series of fiercely personal electronic records -- The Shape of Things (META 029LP, 2012), Evidence (META 031CD, 2013), and The Machine (META 062CD/LP, 2017), an eerie instrumental score for the theatre production of E.M. Forster's The Machine Stops. Along the way they've collaborated with The Soft Moon, Gazelle Twin, ADULT., Xeno & Oaklander, Gary Numan, Matthew Dear, and many more, but at the core of everything is Foxx and the Cornish-based artist/producer. Hannah Peel joined the line-up on the Interplay tour in 2011 and has played every show since, while also adding violin to Evidence and of course, Howl. Foxx describes her string-led contributions as "luscious, expansive and eloquent." The Maths have created an album of dark, writhing glamor. Opener "My Ghost" sounds like haunted static in a cold wind, the title track is a twisted glam-punk celebration of "the outsider" who leaves the fringes to make himself visible, while Foxx switches to a sinister Ferry-esque croon on "Tarzan And Jane Regained". "New York Times" is a report back from the city of the 1970s, with Foxx's vocals gently coaxing out the vulnerability of its street characters and Factory stars, while "Last Time I Saw You" revels in an ice-cool narrative illuminated by neon-lit transformations and flickering revelations -- this song is built for streets and strobes. The album ends with "Strange Beauty", where Foxx sounds like an echo from the 1950s -- a voice that is still searching across all these years for something just out of reach.

DADUB A Sun Called Moon 12"
Dadub is a project synonymous with the deepest rhythms from the interior of the human psyche. Low-end mysticism. Tribalist periodic audio patterns. The Berlin-based Italian producers behind the project, now constructed of sonic warlock Daniele Antezza and performance artist Marco Donnarumma, supply an unmistakably unique vision of post-apocalyptic dub landscapes. Past, present, and future blend into one, backed by the supremely sublime bass of creators who are light years ahead in their field. A Sun Called Moon is a superior first representation on Ohm Resistance, detailing their ongoing mission of creating bass-present music, regardless of dancefloor conformity. "The Time You Killed" opens as a psycho-acoustic audio film, depicting the unknown world from which the EP emanates. "I Would Gladly Die" introduces the first heavy rhythmic patterns, completely alien to identified structures, while unmistakably pushing a groove that entrances hypnotically. "Past Times, Present Ruins" lowers the tempo and continues extrapolating into new rhythmic territory -- or is it ancient? "It Was Too Soon" follows with beat-driven hednod, as influences from Scorn to Autechre are subsumed into the universal language that comprises Dadub. Feeling both familiar and foreign, both modern and eternal, Dadub's first appearance on Ohm Resistance is a fascinating drama played out in four acts. Spliff recommended -- subwoofer required.

FULLMAN & THERESA WONG, ELLEN Harbors LP
Harbors is a collaboration of composers Ellen Fullman (Long String Instrument) and Theresa Wong (cello), which draws inspiration from the soundscapes, stories, and atmospheres that manifest around bodies of water that propagate exchange. Structured around the extended harmonics of the open strings of the cello, Wong and Fullman utilize subsets of these tonal areas to create distinct sonic environments within the piece. Fullman's Long String Instrument, a stunning installation of over forty strings spanning seventy feet in length, places the performers and audience inside the actual resonating body, transforming the architecture itself into the musical instrument. Wong has developed techniques that take the cello beyond tradition into a vocabulary more closely rooted in the sounds of the natural world. She captures material electronically, layering textures amplified throughout the space which form an immersive field where figure and ground are in constant flux. The piece reveals an orchestration of shifting drones, aberrant melodies and glistening atmospheres. Harbors has reverberated many spaces around the world, including: Click Festival, Helsingør, Denmark; Transformer Station, Cleveland; MONA FOMA, Tasmania; Centennial Hall, Sydney Festival; The Lab, San Francisco; and Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. An iconic American figure in experimental music, Ellen Fullman is the creator of the long string instrument, in which rosin-coated fingers brush across dozens of metallic strings, spanning fifty to over a hundred feet in length. Her work has encompassed the study of Just Intonation tuning theory, developing a tablature graphic notation system, experiments with various wire alloys and gauges, and wooden resonator design and fabrication. In 2020 she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. Theresa Wong is a composer, cellist and vocalist active at the intersection of music, experimentation, improvisation, and the synergy of multiple disciplines. Her works include The Unlearning (Tzadik, 2011), 21 songs for violin, cello and 2 voices inspired by Goya's Disasters of War etchings, O Sleep, an improvised opera for an eight-member ensemble exploring the conundrum of sleep and dream life and Venice Is A Fish (2014), a collection of solo songs. She currently works and resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.

SCOPE Scope CD
"The predecessor band of Scope was called Strange Power and was founded around 1969 in Zwolle/Holland. Rik Elings, Henk Zomer (drums) and bassist Erik Raayman had founded the fusion project and had already released a 7"-single that was added to the first Scope CD as a bonus. With the entry of guitarist Rens Nieuwland in 1972, Strange Power became Scope. Subsequently, the Dutch jazz rock foursome made a name for itself in both Holland and Germany. A talent scout from WEA/Atlantic became aware of the band and hired them for his label. In 1973 the band entered the Hamburg studio Maschen to record their debut album Scope under the direction of Jochen Petersen. The result was an exciting, varied fusion/jazz rock album, which contained a lot of improvisations and perfectly reflected the craftsmanship of the four musicians. The press was thrilled and Scope went back on the streets to present the new album live. In 1974 Erik Raayman left the band, but the band continued with a surprising plan. Multi-instrumentalist Rik Elings left his place behind the keyboards Rob Franken and took over the four-string. A wise decision, because Rob Franken was one of the best and most famous jazz pianists in Holland. With this line-up, they returned to Studio Maschen in September 1974 to record the follow-up album Scope II for WEA. Like the debut, the album is a unique funk/fusion delicacy record, and Scope has become a real insider tip of the international jazz rock scene. Despite (or because of) the major deal, large record sales did not happen. After numerous changes in the line-up it came to an end in 1976. The further history of the involved musicians can be wonderfully read in the booklets for Scope and Scope II."

ISABELLA, JASPER AND SIMON FISHER TURNER Savage Songs of brutality and food. By the Extreme Angels of Parody. CD
"... It's the first thirteen years or so of our children's lives made into cute and cruel songs of experimentation and, yes, chaos again. So, from the first heartbeat (not included here) to just under two years ago, I randomly and sometimes secretly recorded them singing or talking, often encouraged of course by me. That's what parents do. I recorded for 13 years. It's rather wonderful to have sound documents as opposed to pictures. Luckily I have both and I'm still rediscovering forgotten sounds even now. This is a music/sound diary (perhaps) of the frankly mad, cute, annoying, moving, innocent, loud, loving, embarrassing, noises of their lives up to now, as recorded and messed up by me, as in messed-up-and-I-don't-care, but do I care. I try to edit with clarity where needed, but otherwise the vocals and ideas are pretty raw and unaltered for the sweeter market of pop . . . I was a dad with slithers time on my hands and a Mac I could barely understand. I made tracks/songs, whatever you want to call them between cooking, cleaning, bathing, shopping, driving, and sleeping ad infinitum. It's the three of us mainly, with The Elysian Quartet thrown together for The Mighty Dinosaur song, but I'm the leader, the captain of the ship. You always need a Captain and they were my sonic crewmates, even though they were often press-ganged into service reluctantly. There will be no Volume Two. They've eventually got really fed up with me doing this, and I can't blame them one bit, but when faced with all these bits of songs or, fragments of stuff, what do you do? Throw them in the bin, give them to them on their wedding day and really make them cringe? No. The best thing to do is to compile them like a mix tape and keep your fingers crossed that someday, someone might be interested in releasing a compilation of this madness. Charles Powne from Soleilmoon Recordings came to the rescue, in that he mentioned somehow whether I'd heard of an LP of children's songs. I hadn't in fact, but I told him about these recordings I'd been making over the years. Isabella and Jasper I think are now probably incredibly pissed off with me, but you know, that's tough. Full stop. Now at 17 and 15 their childhoods are over. The illusions shattered. There is no pretence. They can watch the news, Snapchat at speed, and lurk on the net who knows where. Innocence has gone, battered out of them by schools and the more serious and dull adults that surround them. They were the funniest and most amusing two smaller people imaginable, but now, they're Teenagers... Aaahhhhh. They've opinions, they're brighter than me, better looking, funnier, nicer clothes, better humour and taste, and they've more friends than me too. The job is done. 'm sadly responsible for the musical settings they happen to find themselves in, although, quite often all the music or at least some of it is made up from their noises too. We like a noise here and there and we love to dance on a Friday night. One of the beauties of this sort of music is that there are no rules. We could all do with this sort of freedom, in not just music, but film, cooking, and storytelling. A child's imagination is the finest open canvas ever..." Simon Fisher Turner, London, June 25, 2020

VA Rockgarage Compilation Vol. 1-2-3-4 2LP
Here is the unmissable sound document from one of Italy's earliest '80s underground fanzines. A new sound magazine based on quality content and high musical profile. A total of six issues were published between 1982 and 1984 along with three 7-inches and one LP. All of the Rockgarage musical output is in this significant collection. GOOD MISSIONARIES, THE Fire From Heaven LP
Spittle Records present a reissue of The Good Missionaries' Fire From Heaven, originally released in 1979. Born out of the ashes of Alternative TV, The Good Missionaries embodied Mark Perry's new and advanced experimental-post-punk vision. Avoiding all kinds of average rock cliches, Perry got more and more deeply into an uncompromised form of music. A totally new area where his solid Punk roots were confronted by a more free, radical approach to the sound material. During their lifetime, The Good Missionaries toured and gigged with other distinctive, unconventional bands such as The Fall, The Pop Group, Crass, Scritti Politti... Recorded live on their 1979 tour, Fire From Heaven comes as tangible proof of the band's explosive energy on stage. An infectious mix of electric noise, raw grooves, space, and resolute punk attitude. This brand new, digitally remastered edition comes as the first vinyl reissue since its 1979 original release.

GILBERT/LEWIS/MILLS Mzui LP
Spittle Records present a reissue of Mzui, originally released in 1982. Originally conceived for a multi-media installation, the music contained in this album represents one of Lewis and Gilbert's earliest steps in their immediate post-Wire period. With the band's break-up in February 1980, the duo began to take a more explorative approach through various projects (Dome, Kupol, among others). Clearly, they needed something different and more open out. That's how they started to work on the Mzui multi-media installation, some sort of evolving work in progress that eventually took place at London's Waterloo Gallery in August 1981. Joined by artist Russell Mills, the ex-Wire duo built an imaginary space where all sorts of sculptures, found objects, ambiance sounds and audience reactions were components of the same multiple experience. Sometime afterward, Cherry Red Records proposed a recording project based on the mixing of the resulting tapes. The whole Mzui album, originally released in 1982, is about the notion of sound as landscape, and the soundscape as a guide to an extended form of listening and a unique aural experience. Not a very different concept than Brian Eno's ambient experiments of the same period, but less lyrical and more dark-urban oriented. For too many years out of print, finally digitally remastered, here's the first vinyl reissue of this historical album. As with its 1981's first release, the record comes packaged in a six-page, 12" foldable printed sheet with photos in a plain black sleeve, within a clear PVC cover. Edition of 500.

COLD MEAT Hot And Flustered LP
"Agh! A fresh chop from the large dusty burning murder island: Cold is the Meat to beat. Perth's finest flesh purveyors have upped their naughty game here across ten tracks of gleefully haughty punk. Hot And Flustered is somehow at once extremely camp and deadly serious. Ashley's vengeful, elastic rasp smears menses down the screwfaces of vacuous tastemakers, climate change deniers, perennial street perverts, and of course, ZZ Top fans. There's some surprisingly poignant forays into melody ('Beach Photography') and a good grip of sudden tempo fuckery to keep us well and truly hooked. Their signature chubby and defiant riffs under snarky bouncing toms formula extends well to the album form, creating a timely reminder that hate and fear are more than reasonable responses to our hell predicament. Let's take comfort in collective ridicule. When it's too hot to pogo because the sky is on fire, Cold Meat will let us writhe around in the dirt like the little piggies we are." --Bryony Beynon Well, after a slew of 7" offerings, Perth's Cold Meat finally deliver a full-length record. Much like their last few releases, they've taken an amped-up approach to '70s punk but this time round, they offer ever so slightly more diversity. Ten tracks clocking in at just over 23 minutes and cut at 45rpm for maximum volume.

ALI QUINTET, RASHIED Live At Slugs 2LP
Limited restock, last copies... "Preserved on two reels in Rashied Ali's tape archive, this document may have been only the second time that Ali had led a band in public. The band membership is stellar and unprecedented, and the tunes they play predate all known segments of Ali's career as a composer or bandleader. Ali was still officially on the job as Coltrane's drummer when he assembled this cast for perhaps as little as two sets of music in the Spring of 1967. It appears to be the earliest documented activity for the late tenor saxophonist Ramon Morris, who had thoroughly absorbed the lessons of John Coltrane, post 1961. Trumpeter Dewey Johnson had his peak moment of fame two years prior, appearing with Coltrane on the orchestral Free Jazz masterpiece Ascension. Pianist Stanley Cowell was just emerging as a distinctive voice among the open-minded 'Young Lions' of the day, on his way from Marion Brown's quartet to groups led by Max Roach. Bassist Reggie Johnson was already familiar with Slugs; he had worked there, alongside Ali and Cowell, across the previous two years. This stereo recording gives us a front row seat -- with all the grit and mayhem from those heady times. Meticulous remastering from the original tapes has polished this bit of East Village verité into a riveting, glistening-but-raw pearl from the black underground of the Sixties. 2xLP gatefold tip-on jacket, pressed on RTI Vinyl."

BIG L Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous 2LP
2020 repress. "2015 was the 20th Anniversary of this undisputed New York classic from the late, great, Harlem MC, featuring production from D.I.T.C. legends Showbiz, Buckwild and Lord Finesse. The album itself was another shot across the bow of mid-90s pundits who were prophesizing the death of New York's boom-bap dominance. Alongside recent classics from Nas, Biggie, Mobb Deep and Smif N Wessun, Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous laid out the ascendancy of another visionary MC who could throw down brags punchlines with the best of them, but who never veered away from truly thoughtful lyrical dialogue. Most tracks on the album feature slower tempos, which gave the soon-to-be-immortalized MC the chance to fully explore a range of flows and approaches. Cases in point include the two commercial singles -- 'Put It On' and 'MVP' -- as well as the promo-only single 'Street Struck,' the latter produced by Lord Finesse and containing perhaps L's deepest rhymes on the album. There are also some great posse cuts here, starting with '8 Iz Enuff,' which was all about exposing L's crew (including Herb McGruff, Mike Boogie and Buddah Bless); and the amazing 'Da Graveyard,' which let established peers like Lord Finesse and Grand Daddy I.U. flow alongside another newcomer to the scene named Jay-Z. Less-renowned but no less crucial album cuts like 'All Black' and 'I Don't Understand It' help to tie it all up in a beautiful boom-bap package, with production by and from legends in the game that vaulted Big L into the national spotlight. L would be tragically taken from us in 1999, so this album -- along with 2000's posthumous The Big Picture -- will always be special to fans. Big L was a huge talent with the world in front of him, and it's only right to celebrate his life again on the 20th Anniversary of the album that started it all for him."

GOLDMUND Corduroy Road LP
First time vinyl issue of Keith Kenniff's debut under his Goldmund moniker, Corduroy Road. Originally only released on CD in 2005 via John Twells's Type Recordings, this album of rare and unusual minimalist beauty. Multi-instrumentalist Keith Kenniff is a busy man. He has appeared as Helios on a number of acclaimed releases, including Deaf Center's Neon City EP (2004), and released a debut album Unomia on Merck Records which has appeared on many "Best Of 2004" lists. All this while studying at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, and playing drums, guitar or contributing production to a host of amazing musicians. As Goldmund, Kenniff has disregarded the electronic elements of his music almost entirely in favor of just a piano, a microphone, and occasionally a guitar. Corduroy Road is thirteen tracks of pure recording, the sound of the piano being opened and the feet on the pedals, the sound of fingers pressing lovingly onto the keys. This is a record of rare and unusual beauty, so shocking and yet unpretentious in its simplicity. When the guitar does emerge from beside the delicately touched piano, it serves as a balancing point for the record. Weaving in-and-out of the melodies, it adds another layer to what is already incredibly moving music. Corduroy Road is rooted in Kenniff's love of folk music from the American Civil War. You hear this directly from his rendition of Civil War-era classic "Marching Through Georgia", but the influence carries throughout the record. There is an unheard voice which propels each track through history, maybe the ghosts of dying soldiers whispering in a long-forgotten bar. Every haunting note drifts deep into the psyche and is lost in the ether of nostalgia. In this way it is a concept recording of sorts, it certainly has a narrative and has to be listened to in sequence. The story has clear themes; loss, history, friendship, camaraderie, forgiveness, and hope, all clearly marked out by musical segments. It is no surprise that Kenniff's passion for cinema shines through so strongly. It would be hard to draw comparisons to music so rooted in folk traditions, but the music evokes traces of Ryuichi Sakamoto, Mark Hollis, Keith Jarret, or even Eno's more piano based compositions. LOGIC SYSTEM Venus CD
Wewantsounds reissue Logic System's Venus, originally released in 1981. Reissued outside of Japan for the first time in 40 years. Hideki Matsutake started his career as the assistant of Japanese electronic music master Isao Tomita in the early '70s, he went on to work with Ryuichi Sakamoto and then Yellow Magic Orchestra as their keyboard programmer and unofficial fourth member. In 1981 he started his own Logic System project recording Venus that year in Los Angeles with Don Grusin, Nathan East, and Michael Boddicker, brilliantly mixing synth funk, ambient, and boogie with a touch of fusion jazz predating vaporwave by a mere 30 years. While the first album, Logic had a harder techno feel, the second one, Venus, was different affair. Recorded in Los Angeles at the new state of the art Yamaha Studio, it was loosely themed on the Greek goddess Venus and had a funkier more organic sound. For the album, Matsutake had asked a handful of American musicians to provide songs he would then add his synth magic touch to. The updated sound was achieved by switching from the Moog III to the E-mu modular System (which Matsutake brought over to LA) and other synths like the Prophet 5, the Roland MC-8 and TR 808, and the Yamaha GS-1, a forerunner of the DX7. The result is an amazing futuristic mix of electronic music and early '80s funk, announcing many genres to come, from techno and house to French electro and vaporwave. From the breezy ambient synth of "I Love You" to the city pop edge of "Be Yourself" (originally written by Nathan East for Debra Laws) and the vocoder-led Daft Punk-ish "Take A Chance", Venus is a fascinating album that both pushes the boundaries of electronic music and is yet strangely accessible and beautiful. The other key elements of Venus is the artwork designed by legendary Japanese illustrator Pater Sato. Sato had started in Japan in the early '70s doing many album covers for Japanese artists, including Tatsuro Yamashita's cult Spacy LP (1977) before moving to New York in 1979 to pursue a career in fashion and advertising. His airbrush style became hugely influential over the years. The original album came with a beautiful eight-panel insert illustrated by Sato which Wewantsounds has reproduced. Also includes obi strip and a second insert featuring credits and line-up, plus liner notes by Hashim Kotaro Bharoocha with an exclusive interview of Hideki Matsutake. Remastered from the original tapes.

LP version.

SURE 20 Years LP
Combining electronic frames, reverberated guitars, keyboards, and tight drum machines, 20 Years unfolds in spectral explosions and dark but colorful tensions. Strange to see how your instincts always lead you to the same place. The "cave" was the place for the three members of Sure: a fantasized dancefloor where post-punk's grim could seamlessly mix with mainstream pop, and where hardcore fans could dance on a catchy beat. But that frame was too precise to stand the test of time. Shades and balance changed the cave's space, as the tracks echoed in its damp vaults. What if the cave wasn't just a den of iniquity, but a real shelter -- the choice of words can also reveal a different meaning than what you had in mind. The words of Sure thought they were talking about a present absurdity, while their mind was relentlessly heading towards a catastrophic future awaiting with open arms. Thank god, the initial vision was failed.
