Canta Mientras Puedas (Legendary Pink Dots)

Rex <richwill@xsite.net>

The title of this anthology, released by Play It Again Sam in 1996 as a coda
to the many years of business done with the Pink Dots, translates to "Sing
While You May," which has been the motto of the band since its inception at
the beginning of the 80s. The Spanish is due in part to the massive LPD
following in Mexico, where the band played to its largest crowd ever in
1995. The compilation doesn't quite pick up where Stone Circles left off;
skipping Any Day Now and The Golden Age entirely, it features three tracks
from The Crushed Velvet Apocalypse, three from The Maria Dimension, one from
each of the Shadow Weavers, one from Chemical Playschool Volumes 8 & 9, two
from 9 Lives to Wonder, and slightly alternate versions of two from From
Here You'll Watch the World Go By. The brief discography listed inside the
cover is a good overview of the LPD's and related projects' output on CD.

Overall impression: excellent. This cd is a compilation of tracks from LPD's
'90-'95 albums, up until "From Here You'll Watch the World Go By". Many of
my favorite songs were selected from these albums (the ones I own, that is)
and they cover the spectrum of LPD's sound and styles rather well. From
folksy acoustic/vocal numbers to psychedelic tinged quiet songs to abrasive
electronic songs ... this will give you a very nice sonic picture of what
LPD is about. The last two tracks are slightly different from the regular
album versions, nothing too drastic. A very nice domestic priced (U.S.)
starter disc for any budding LPD fanatic, and a great collection for the
already devoted LPD listener who doesn't want to carry around 7 albums.
