Activities of Dust cd New Mind on AoD $14.99
DOUG SCHARIN (HIM, CODEINE, REX, JUNE OF 44), BILL LASWELL, JEFF PARKER, BERNIE WORRELL come together as Activities of Dust. "A New Mind is the result of hours of recorded feedback that had been collected from various mixing sessions over the past decade. Within are compositions, possibility waves, constructed, originally, from manipulation of these feedback signals. The initial impressions from Jeff Parker were then added to the recordings. Parker interpreted, reacted to & in some cases painted a definitive picture of latent melodies within the feedback structures. Combining & blending these two elements created a basic form for the introduction of keyboard, bass & drum elements to enhance the movements taking shape in the music. Bill Laswell & Bernie Worrell fleshed out the tracks." -Scharin

Deadbeat cd Roots And Wire on Wagon Repair $18.99
DEADBEAT is Scott Monteith, a long-time Montrealer & recent Berlin ex-pat who has been releasing his own special blend of dub-laden, minimal electronics since 2000 for labels such as Cynosure, Musique Risquée, ~scape, & Spectral, to name but a few. His 1st full-length release for WAGON REPAIR here is aesthetically informed by his long term collaborative friendship w/ ROBERT HENKE (aka MONOLAKE), the close proximity of his fellow artists in Berlin & the opportunity to collaborate w/ PAUL ST. HILAIRE (aka TIKIMAN). It is no surprise that an album of such vast scope be largely inspired by the artist's own transition from Montreal-based producer releasing on Berlin label ~scape for 5 years, to Berlin-based producer releasing on a Canadian label. An uncanny logic is present throughout, weaving a fluid narrative from disparate influences & styles. Might just knock you off your seat

REINHARDT, JONAS: cd Jonas Reinhardt on kranky $13.99
Drawing from traditions of 20th century instrumental synthesizer music, Jonas Reinhardt represents a love affair between analog electronics, sweeping atmospherics, and driving motorik beats. Combined together, these elements bring the album's 13 pieces into focus as the soundtrack for an inner-eyelid space epic that never was. Inspired in equal measure by the natural beauty of his California coastal surroundings, continental European art-rock experimentation, and the freewheeling punk aesthetic of contemporary home studio recording, Jonas Reinhardt's music transcends its influences to bring into being a work that's wholly new while referencing a celebrated aesthetic of the past. Armed with a battery of analog synthesizers and vintage drum machines, Jonas writes music that is at times stark and spare and at others lush and all-encompassing; all the while keeping an underlying rhythmic pulse just beneath the surface. Jonas describes his technique as 'a spirited conversation between man, machines, and the ecst tic truth of the chaotic unknown.' With this album, Jonas carefully constructs melodies and rhythmic foundations then pushes the limits of recording to the sonic fringes and beyond. The effect is a warm, hauntingly familiar sound bounded by unpredictability."
MATMOS: The West CD $13.99
Autofact is pleased to announce a reissue of The West -- a five song album by the Baltimore electronic duo, Matmos -- in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the album's original recording, released on Deluxe Records in 1999. On this, their third release, Matmos collaborate with an all-star selection of friends to create an unusual hybrid of digitally-constructed acoustic music. Imitating but transforming rock, country, and folk gestures, The West reaches territory similar to work by John Fahey or Gastr del Sol from a perversely opposite end of the spectrum: instead of making organic music that draws upon electronic texture, this is electronic music that feels organic -- both in its sound sources and in its construction. Instead of the bizarre sound sources that Matmos have used in the past (amplified crayfish nerve tissue, rubber clothing, hair), the musique concrète elements on The West have an everyday quality: a phone rings, a car starts, the pages of a book are turned, water drips, a cigarette is smoked. Very quiet, familiar sounds are amplified into strange new shapes. Despite their temporary flirtation with traditional instruments, Matmos' conceptual antics remain: in a Cage-ian gesture, a dice game determined the selection and content of the tiny sample snippet clouds within the first song "Last Delicious Cigarette," with dice rolls selecting records by Penderecki, Minor Threat, Enoch Light, Mandrill, a "Costar" record with Fernando Lamas, and a recording of a Heidegger lecture. The resulting song starts off as tongue-in-cheek turntablism and ends in a ditch with a dark, scraping drone. "Action At A Distance" pits Dave Pajo's tranquil guitar figures against the distorted noise of water dripping on a heavily-amplified copper sheet. Listen carefully and you'll hear the crisp pages of a Bible turning. "Sun On 5 at 152," an ode to a favorite strip of freeway, flickers between gentle repetitions of Mark Lightcap's acoustic guitar and discrete, unnerving digital edits before bursting into full drums/banjo/violin/cello orchestration and peaking with thirty seconds of drum and bass. "The West" ambitiously fuses distinct sections into a continuous 20-minute road trip across quasi-country, kosmische space music, electro, Krautrock, free-jazz, and full-on noise. The final song "Tonight, The End" is a sleazy take on stripper jazz featuring Jim Putnam (of Radar Bros.) on trumpet, Rick Brown (from Run On) at the kit, and Mark Lightcap's talents on the peck horn. Matmos is Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt.
REHBERG, PETER: Work For GV 2004-2008 CD $17.99
Peter Rehberg (aka Pita) is a composer and performer of electronic audio works, and also the founder of the Editions Mego label. His collaboration with the Paris-based puppeteer and choreographer Gisèle Vienne began in 2001 with the production of the DACM piece ShowroomDummies, followed by Stereotypie in 2003. In 2004, Vienne started to direct under her own name and began to work on pieces collaborating on text with U.S. author, Dennis Cooper. This CD is a document of selected audio parts of all Gisèle Vienne productions made between 2004-2008, except for the epic Kindertotenlieder, whose audio material was presented on the various KTL releases in 2006 and 2007. The range here is vast -- from the upfront noise excess of the I Apologize (2004) tracks to the lonely synth passages which were used in Une Belle Enfant Blonde (2005), and the sad coda used for Jerk, which began as a radio play for Radio France Culture in 2007, before being adapted for stage in 2008. The opening "Murder Version" is a version of the recording of "Meurtre" by Catherine Robbe-Grillet and Jonathan Capdevielle, which was released as a single-sided 12" vinyl in 2005, and is to be considered as a tribute to the Alain Robbe-Grillet film Glissements Progressifs Du Plaisir (1974). Although this material was intended for consumption in a theatrical setting, it has been edited with domestic use in mind, ultimately representing that grey zone where puppetry, literature, contemporary theatre and dance, visual art, and extreme computer music meet.
MORGENSTERN, BARBARA: BM CD $15.99
This is the long-awaited fifth full-length solo album from Berlin's queen of fragile and poetic electro-pop, Barbara Morgenstern. However, Morgenstern's tag as an "electro-pop icon," with which she has been associated since the early days of the Berlin living room scene, no longer really fits. The lightness that was so characteristic of her previous work has given way to new depths. What was minimal before is now far more complex, even weighty. Barbara Morgenstern's latest pop music creation is utterly captivating and mesmerizing. BM is interspersed with distortions, cacophonies and bouncing rhythms. With such a backdrop, the sweeping pop moments with their wide panoramas which make the heart soar, only seem all the more vast. And it's really cool, on "Morbus Basedow" for example, the way hard noise gives way to what is tried and tested pop, after all. On the whole, Morgenstern's music on BM is as unpredictable as never before. The patterns emerging from the piano are reminiscent of the ballads and chansons of Brecht and Weill. While the ever-present electric guitar on the other hand, played by Sven Janetzko, just wants to rock. Multifarious patterns criss-cross and knock each other off course, causing tension. And in the background, things bubble up from the depths -- like gnawing doubts which are constantly squeaking or scraping away somewhere. This release is eclectic like none of her previous releases and no song is quite like any other. Some arrangements comply with clear pop mechanisms, while others, in contrast, are more idiosyncratic. Off-beats and polyrhythms are subtly presented to the listener. Throughout the album, Barbara's melodious and soft singing voice forms the center of attention, but right and left, above and below, there is always something very different happening. It's as if the music is the subtext to the thoughtful lyrics with their often unusual meter. The lyrics can also be very political, such as on "Come To Berlin," a piece about the shocking city planning in Berlin.
SURF CITY: Surf City EP LP $14.99
LP version. This is the debut release by New Zealand's Surf City. An anachronism right at the beginning, Surf City was founded in a video library, in this dying-out relic of an analogue age. When Davin Stoddard and Josh Kennedy ran into each other one evening in their small town, Josh had just bought a sound card and Davin a four-track. This debut EP is storming and strolling, light-footed, laconic and pop -- produced in an excessively lo-fi a manner as possible. Surf City is about the simplicity of sound, perfectly encapsulating pop music's essence, that bands like Pavement, The Zombies or The Jesus and Mary Chain share as a smallest common denominator. Everyone who has ever heard the breakers against New Zealand's coast suspects that Brian Wilson has a beach house in Surf City as well. However, New Zealand's legendary era of rock music resides in the Flying Nun label and with bands like The Clean or Tall Dwarfs. Nevertheless, the rumbling atmosphere of "Headin' Inside" could have been released by Flying Nun Records as well -- not as a nostalgic revival of good old times -- but rather as a self-confident continuation of a legendary sound. With Morr Music, Surf City has found a congenial home.
GIFFONI, CARLOS: The Absence of Essence 2X7" $13.99
wicked expensive, so i only ordered 2 copies.......
"Carlos Giffoni's heavy synthesizer work recalls the crushing, massiveness of early power electronics. Completely consuming the air around it with heavy vibrations and total deprivation. These four tracks rip holes through the sonic barriers, loud and powerful but with entrancing subtleties and discreet builds. The nature of the 7" format does not harm Giffoni's work, which normally exists in extended lengths; instead very succinct and unwavering compositions result, creating four vignettes of his sterile industrial zones. As the person responsible for No Fun Productions and the No Fun Fest, this Brooklyn transplant's presence in the current progression of the genre is undeniable. In an edition of 400 2x7" (one white and one black) sets in gatefold sleeves with art by Maya Miller of Heavy Tapes/Religious Knives."
WOOD, CHRIS: Vulcan CD $20.99
"Esoteric Recordings are proud to announce the release of the album Vulcan by the late Chris Wood, founder member of the legendary Traffic and flautist and saxophonist extraordinaire. Recorded just after the demise of Traffic in 1974, Vulcan was begun for Island Records but shelved in 1978. The sessions featured contributions from Steve Winwood and members of The Wailers, along with a live recording of Traffic performing the title track in 1974, but due to a change in musical fashion with the advent of Punk, the album failed to see the light of day. Island boss Chris Blackwell returned the tapes to Chris Wood in the late 1970s. Following Chris' untimely death in 1983 the tapes were passed on to his sister, Stephanie. Now, 25 years later, and after three years of research and preparation, Esoteric have pieced together the sessions in co-operation with Stephanie Wood to bring you Vulcan."
VA: Fight On, Your Time Ain't Long LP $14.99
"Compilation of sanctified blues recorded between 1927-1934. This is our sequel to the popular Life Is A Problem LP. Twelve songs of pure guitar-driven gospel. This slab is as melodic as it is rockin'. Features songs by Bukka White, Willie Mae Morris, Bo Weevil Jackson, Kid Prince Moore and more. This is packaged in the old-fashioned tip-on sleeve."
XENAKIS, IANNIS: Electronic Works 2 CD $17.99
"Featured pieces" "Polytope de Cluny" (1972, for 8-channel tape); "Hibiki hana ma" (1969-70, for 16-channel tape); "Fer Chaud" (1957, original film soundtrack). "Mode continues its Xenakis Edition with the second volume dedicated to his electronic works, again restored from the best quality source materials. New high-resolution transfers were made of 'Polytope de Cluny' from the original analog master tapes. 'Hibiki hana ma' has been restored from the existing digital masters. 'Hibiki hana ma' was created for the Expo 1970 World's Fair in Osaka, Japan, where it was experienced by thousands. It was designed to be played on a tape loop in a hall which boasted state-of-the-art acoustic equipment, with some 700 speakers scattered under the floor plus 128 surface and suspended speakers symmetrically distributed throughout the pavilion's amphitheater. Both works have been remixed to stereo by Gerard Pape, who worked closely with the composer as the former director of Xenakis' CCMIX studio in Paris. The experimental film Fer Chaud (1957), directed by Jacques Brissot and Nicolas Schoeffer, focused on the work of Op-Art artist Victor Vasarely. It featured a musical score for ensemble by Xenakis. This score is unique to the film and has never been published elsewhere. It has been carefully remastered from the film soundtrack and presented here." Also to be released on DVD-audio format.

ACID MOTHERS GONG: Live @ Uncon 06 DVD $21.99
"When the Acid Mothers Gong band manifested in 2003, it was yet another story in the evolving history of Gong, which started in 1968 in Paris. Daevid Allen had returned there after being refused entry to the UK for visa reasons when on the way to the Edinburgh Festival with Soft Machine, so he put his energy into Gong, which quickly came to the forefront of the avant garde. Paris was heating up for the revolution of workers and students against the government, and Daevid, with Gilli Smyth, had to flee as revolutionaries. They were in danger of being arrested for playing music to the students. After a disastrous trip to Morocco, they returned to Paris in 1969 to play at the Amougies Festival. They made several albums, and lived communally, which was an inspiration to that generation, and in 1971 Actuel magazine voted them the best alternative band in France. By l975, the band had moved to the UK and both Gilli Smyth and Daevid Allen had left to pursue solo careers with their own bands such as Mother Gong, New York Gong, Gong Maison, PlanetGong and eventually Acid Mothers Gong. As Steve Hillage said 'nobody ever left,' and the history of Gong has been ever-changing, like a river. Acid Mothers are a collection of improvising musicians with formidable technical skills and a philosophical stance that has placed them at the tip of the Japanese underground iceberg. With more than 100 CDs to their name, they have a massive cult following internationally and are well known for never having played the same song the same way twice! They were the perfect choice, allowing Gilli and Daevid to go where few have ventured. Daevid and Gilli recorded an album in Australia with Acid Mothers in 2003, toured Japan with them a couple of times, and played the set (which is now this DVD) at the 'Unconventional Gong Gathering' in Amsterdam in November 2006. The recordings from that event were mixed and mastered by Harry Williamson at Spring Studios in Melbourne, with assistance from Daevid Allen, and Harry also did the psychedelic video edit, and created special effects which complement the music perfectly. This DVD is of a magical combination of musicians coming together to push the boundaries of improvised music -- the line up is Daevid Allen, Kawabata Makoto, Gilli Smyth, Higashi Hiroshi, Yoshida Tatsuya and Atsushi Tsuyama with special guest Josh Pollock from the University of Errors." NTSC format, region free.
