SCOTT QUARTET, THE RONNIE BBC Jazz Club 1964-1966 CD
Everyone knows that the 1960s, the decade in which London swung as never before, were the golden era of Ronnie Scott's club, the tiny bolthole of a basement that had swiftly gone from a strictly parochial phenomenon to an international marker on the jazz map. What's less well-known, largely thanks to his own diffidence about recording, is that this was also the time in which Scott the player hit his peak. These previously unreleased sessions from 1964-66 find him helming his own quartet -- a band praised by critics of the time as a "powerful combo" creating "full-blooded, exciting" jazz -- in three distinct settings; live in Manchester (supporting jazz superstars the Dave Brubeck Quartet); in the studio; and accompanying a very special guest, the iconic American jazz vocalist Mark Murphy. Rarely has Scott been heard to better advantage, his playing throughout these sets bringing his legend back to vivid, hard-swinging and passionately communicative life.

Side One contains recordings from Ready Steady Go. Side Two has tracks from US and European TV networks.

WOODWARD AND THE WINTER ORPHANS, DAVEY Love & Optimism LP
LP version. Bristol indie music legend Davey Woodward has announced his new album Love & Optimism, together with his congenial band The Winter Orphans. Best known for his bands The Brilliant Corners, The Experimental Pop Band, and Karen, this output was recorded "live" in the studio. This album is very personal and perhaps Woodward's most emotional performance, putting Davey solidly amongst the best songwriters of his generation. Love & Optimism is the band's second following their self-titled debut released in 2018 on Tapete Records (TR 412CD/LP). "I grew up and have lived in Bristol for most of my life. I use the city as a backdrop to many of my songs. Often, I go into some detail about places. Roads and the people of the city. It has always inhabited my songs. Love & Optimism continues my fascination with the city." Davey Woodward first came to prominence with his 1980s band The Brilliant Corners, part of the jangly indie C86 scene, but with a diverse palette of indie pop, country, rock n' roll, post-punk and humor. The mini albums Growing Up Absurd, Fruit Machine and What's In A Word was followed by their best known album Somebody Up There Likes Me (1987), several John Peel sessions, indie chart success and regular tours. In 2013 Cherry Red Records released a retrospective of the band's work Heart On Your Sleeve (A Decade In Pop 1983-1993). Woddward's next band The Experimental Pop Band (1996-2012) was also championed by Peel and signed to City Slang Records. In the last decade, Davey has released a handful of solo LPs, including the lo-fi folk pop album 6 Miles East Of Here 5 Miles North Of Nowhere (2011) and also recorded with alt guitar band Karen releasing several EPs on The Environmental Sounds label. "This music is honest and revealing with depth and a feeling of mysterious purposes -- the hair on your arms may stand up as you absorb this goodness." --Big Takeover Magazine

PAYNE, MAGGI Ahh-Ahh (Limited Edition) LP
Special limited edition of 50 copies available with letterpress artwork by Obsolete Press. Aguirre Records present a reissue of Maggi Payne's Ahh-Ahh, originally released in 2012 on Root Strata. Originally composed by Maggi Payne between 1984-1987 for the performance group Technological Feets. Formed by video artist Ed Tennenbaum in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1981, the group combines dance, live video processing, and music. Composed on an Apple II computer and various early sampling devices, Payne's compositions are a vibrant response to the call from the moving body. Populated with buoyant pulses, graceful analog swells, dense fog-like drones, and cascading rhythms that shift in space, Ahh-Ahh is a vital document of not only these early collaborations, but of computer-based music as well. She studied with many greats in the field, including Gordon Mumma, Robert Ashley, and David Berhman.

ABRAMS, JOSHUA Natural Information LP
Joshua Abrams' first Natural Information album from 2010. In his book Powershift, published in 1990, writer and businessman Alvin Toffler predicted that the century ahead would be defined by speed and that time itself is destined to become our most valuable commodity. When Joshua Abrams recorded Natural Information, originally released by Eremite in 2010, he was reacting against such commodification of time and the diminishing attention span that accompanies it by offering music with an irresistible groove, rooted in the sinuous rhythms of the human body and the full play of our senses. At the heart of this music is the sound of the guimbri, a North African three-stringed bass lute, which Abrams started to play following a visit to Morocco during the late '90s. Traditionally the instrument has a key role in mystical healing ceremonies. Abrams, already a well-established figure in Chicago's vibrant musical communities, had no desire to repackage tradition. He recognized however that the involving, springy and percussive sound of the guimbri was just the right voice to communicate vital data, to relay the natural information we all need in order to get back in touch with the pulsating continuities of a world we all share. With Natural Information, Abrams entered a new phase of his musical life, extending an invitation to the trance, where time intersects with timelessness. He carried with him a wealth of playing and listening experience. As a bass player he had worked with a host of notable musicians including guitarist Jeff Parker and percussionist Hamid Drake, and had been a member of back porch minimalism outfit Town And Country and the improvising trio Sticks And Stones. The guimbri is a shaping presence on this remarkable recording, but Abrams also plays bass, bells, kora, sampler and synthesizer. Sympathetic friends including guitarist Emmett Kelly, vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz, and drummers Frank Rosaly and Nori Tanaka join him for the project. They set out not to contrive some neat hybrid but to enable coordinated energies and enriching influences to pulse and flow through living, breathing music. Ten years further into a century seemingly dedicated, as Toffler foresaw, to the survival of the fastest, the deep involving groove of Natural Information seems still more relevant, more illuminating, more vital. Newly remastered at Dubplates & Mastering. 180 gram vinyl.

ABRAMS, JOSHUA Represencing LP
Joshua Abrams' second album from 2012. With the release of Natural Information in 2010, Joshua Abrams entered into a new phase of his creative life, making music with a deep involving groove that communicates the pulsating energies of the human body and the incessant kaleidoscopic interplay of sensory perceptions. Represencing, recorded in Chicago in the summer of 2011 and originally released the following year by Eremite, was the next stride along this exhilarating path. Once again Abrams gives a key role to the guimbri, a North African bass lute, which he had started to play during the late '90s following a trip to Morocco. Its sound when plucked is percussive, emphatic from moment to moment, yet also bouncy and rhythmically propulsive, as if naturally springing forward. A time-honored instrument, used traditionally in healing ceremonies, the guimbri in Abrams' hands offers an invitation to the trance, an expanded present where time intersects with timelessness. As the title Represencing suggests, this is uplifting music with a serious mission -- to express that ongoing present and to give voice to our presence, here and now, within time's continuous flow. Once again, a fine selection of sympathetic friends help Abrams to craft this antidote to the current century's compulsion to accelerate and its ever-diminishing attention span. They include saxophonist David Boykin, drummer Chad Taylor, and guitarists Jeff Parker and Emmett Kelly. Lisa Alvarado plays harmonium on two tracks. She also provides a painting for the cover art which matches the music beautifully, vivid and vibrant, its interlocking geometry binding fragmentary perceptions into a coherent pattern, self-sufficient yet also clearly part of a far larger picture. By 2012 this fascinating music was taking on a group identity, performed by Abrams with the Natural Information Society. That development was subsequently consolidated with the recording of Magnetoception, released in 2015. Represencing, however, conveys the excited air of an adventure unfolding. Reminiscent in passing of a variety of other musics -- of tightly poised jazz, motoric rock and minimalism plus echoes from other cultural traditions -- it remains nonetheless a singular statement by an artist rapidly finding his own distinctive voice. The music offered by Represencing is intricate yet direct, hypnotically repetitive yet constantly changing, built to last yet intimately present. Newly remastered at Dubplates & Mastering. 180 gram vinyl.

ASCHER/DAVID LAWRENCE/RYAN SEXTON, RODNEY The El Duce Tapes BLU-RAY
"In the early '90s, aspiring filmmaker (and General Hospital co-star) Ryan Sexton lugged a giant camcorder into some of the seediest clubs and the filthiest apartments in Hollywood. There he filmed hour upon hour of VHS footage of the jaw-droppingly offensive Shock Rock band The Mentors, focusing on their infamous lead singer, 'El Duce.' 30 years later, the team behind The Nightmare and Room 237 and the editor of Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist uncover this dusty stockpile of long forgotten -- and unseen -- footage. They begin to piece together a picture of the man under the black executioner's hood and what his willfully offensive act and controversial views might tell us about 21st century America. An Incendiary, tragicomic documentary (midway between The Decline of Western Civilization and Crumb) which has been hailed as 'Essential Viewing' by CineVue and called 'Dark and Irresistible"' by director John Carpenter, The El Duce Tapes will chew you up, spit you out, and leave you floored."

JAEGER, KASSEL Meith LP
2021 restock. Black Truffle present Meith, a new composition in two parts from prolific composer/theorist François Bonnet. Usually operating under his Kassel Jaeger moniker, Bonnet is a major figure in contemporary electronics and electro-acoustic music, collaborating with artists such as Lucy Railton, Jim O'Rourke, and Stephen O'Malley, and releasing his work on labels including Editions Mego, Senufo, and Shelter Press. Always meticulously detailed yet immediately affecting, Bonnet's work situates itself at a very personal intersection between the traditions of academic electronic and electroacoustic music, and a more shadowy, underground group of approaches to experimental sound: kosmische musik, the tape murk of the 1980s underground, the haunted ambience of Christoph Heemann & Co. Meith immediately welcomes you into its densely layered sound world of electronic tones, positive organ, and unidentifiable field-recorded textures. Almost static yet constantly in flux, it deliberately opens itself up to repeated and varied listening: from a distance, its many voices cohere into a monolithic plane of sound, while closer inspection reveals myriad details and momentary events. Like a drop of ink spreading through water, harmonic material present in one voice gradually fans out into the whole arrangement, creating fleeting moments of unity amid the constantly shifting waves of tone and texture. Far from the austerity of some contemporary electro-acoustic music, Meith affects the listener as overwhelming organic; its individual layers are unstable and at times near-chaotic, imbued with life. Though it can appear almost formless, the piece undergoes major shifts throughout its duration, from the austere dissonance of the opening moments to the surging harmonies that appear midway through the second side before the piece gradually dissolves into a spectral glimmer.

LES BLOUSONS NOIRS Les Blousons Noirs 1961-1962 LP
An ultimate testimony to adolescent rage and the spirit of rock n' roll, these eight songs by Les Blousons Noirs (Black Jackets) are essential to understanding what rock music is and what it should always be: determined, primitive and wild. Originally from Bordeaux, Les Blousons Noirs seem to have bought their instruments the morning of their recording session: the singer sings out of time, the drummer is feverish and the guitarist a total whack. Nothing is repressed with Les Blousons Noirs. Their enthusiasm and carefree attitude are such that the songs are delightfully exuberant. Their two unusually unique EPs were released in 1961 (Special Rock) and 1962 (Special Twist) on the Guilain label. And as a French band, they quite naturally decided to cover French rock standards... slaying them with enthusiasm. Les Chaussettes Noires (The Black Socks), Les Chats Sauvages (The Wild Cats), and two of Johnny Hallyday's songs were thus brought to the spotlight. The only original track was "Les Fous Du Twist" (Crazy for the Twist) written by their young producer Claude Ghislain. For the record, their "Eddy Soit Bon" (Eddy be Good) was originally Chuck Berry's "Johnny B Good". The fact that they used the same picture for the cover of both EPs reinforces the feeling of total uselessness and "don't give a fuck" attitude that is so often embraced by rock n' roll. Les Blousons Noirs were forerunners of the French punk and DIY scenes. Remember that it wasn't until 1964 that Hasil Adkins published his "She Said", 1965 that the Peruvians of Los Saicos put out "Demolicion", and 1966 that the Legendary Stardust Cowboy delivered his killer "Paralysed". The Shaggs and their late Philosophy Of The World in '69 were too late to the game. In order to become a band with a cult following, all Les Blousons Noirs had to do was remain anonymous. Our investigations to try and identify these rock n' rollers were futile. The only information regarding the identity of Les Blousons Noirs comes from Marc Liozon (Editor-in-Chief of the club des années 60 fanzine) who found a copy of the second EP dedicated to a certain Minie. This exposed that the band was comprised of Clod on lead guitar, Jo on rhythm guitar, Did on drums, and Samy on vocals -- a nice bunch! In short, no known identities, no concerts, no pictures, two insane EPs out of nowhere.

BEBEY, FRANCIS Psychedelic Sanza 1982-1984 2LP
2021 repress. Double LP version with printed inner sleeve. Born Bad Records presents the music of Cameroonian musician Francis Bebey, circa 1982-1984. "The first time I saw a sanza (a type of African 'thumb piano'), it was just sitting there on a piece of furniture in my family's living room/dining room -- a space that our father also transformed into a recording studio every day. It seemed more like a box than a musical instrument: a mysterious instrument, which arrived at our house, like many things, in a somewhat miraculous way. The sounds it produced seemed particularly bizarre; to my young musician's ears, trained in Western classical music, it sounded out of tune. That's because, like my brothers and sisters, I had been trained on the piano. I had trouble understanding how anyone could endure these tones and, honestly, our father's passion for 'unusual sounds' did not interest me. I was in secondary school at the time (the very late 1970s) and was not at all oriented toward musical projects. I planned to graduate, and then become a chef. In the early 1980s, my interest in music picked up. I was still undecided about my career. I was content to pursue my 'serious' English studies while hanging out at jazz clubs at les Halles in Paris, where I sometimes joined jam sessions. Next, I put together my first band with professional musicians; I had hidden my age and lack of experience from them. France was just beginning to accept 'world music.' Musicians of every nationality were performing in Paris. It was a wonderful period. My father asked my brother Toups and me to accompany him for a few concerts. In particular, we toured Tunisia together at the time of the 1983 Carthage International Festival. Back then, my father was renowned across the French-speaking world. Everyone looked forward to hearing his humorous songs, like 'Agatha' and 'La condition masculine.' But, behind the scenes, he continued his research concerning electronic music, the sansa, pygmy polyphony, etc. One day he put a sansa in my hands, without saying a word. He was sending me a message: 'Let's see what you can do with it!' That's when I really discovered something. Exploring the instrument and playing, I transcended the 'imperfect' aspect of its sound and began to discover its fascinating potential. Playing the sansa, you enter a world that enraptures you in a very serene and mesmerizing way. I think its sounds evoke a rainbow, with rain falling while the sun shines. A very peaceful feeling. It allows you to make music that truly sounds like life. The sansa is also the instrument that my father and I shared the most because I am a pianist and he was a guitarist. I also share this eminently African instrument with my musician brother, Toups. Our father loved to tell us one of the legends of the sansa: how it even managed to dispel the boredom felt by... the Creator himself! This instrument gives life to the world, to beings and things. I did not participate in the production of the various records that my father devoted to the sansa. He did it himself, you might say, in his 'laboratory.' Yet today, I cannot imagine playing a concert without using a sansa. The piano remains present so that listeners don't become disoriented and wonder about the weird sounds invading their ears! However, I find the eccentric and disturbing side of sansa interesting. And the sansa always affects the audience: in reality, it excites them. The secrets of this instrument are surely its beneficial powers and... its magic!" --Patrick Bebey

VA Chebran: French Boogie 1980-1985 2LP
2021 repress. Double LP version with insert. In the early '80s in France, the happy-go-lucky gathered the nectar of each and every new release. Believing in a bright future for videotex and loosened up by budding pirate radio stations, the new generation dreamt of dancefloors and holiday clubs. French Boogie, which preserves the spirit of these years of boodle and bunkum, is the ideal soundtrack to their dreams. What has come to be called "French boogie" is a form of synthetic funk reflecting the spirit of those days when everything seemed possible. In popular clubs such as La Main Bleue in Montreuil or L'Echappatoire in Clichy-sous-Bois -- where Micky Milan could be seen behind the decks -- an enthusiastic audience discovered this post-disco sonic wave, influenced as much by French pop as by The Sugarhill Gang or Kurtis Blow. In this myriad of new musicians, the very young François Feldman and Phil Barney pioneered a fresh musical hybrid. Other well-known artists like Gérard Blanc from Martin Circus (Attaché Case), Richard de Bordeaux (Ich), and Jean-Pierre Massiera (Anisette, Pirate Club, Mandrake, Groupe Scratch Man) added an eccentric touch. Singers like Agathe (the author of "La Fourmi" (included here) and of the hit song "Je ne veux pas rentrer chez moi seule") were far more than just window dressing, giving an ironic and subversive twist to this rather harmless genre. But by 1984, French boogie was already breathless, and merged with other genres; on the one hand, rap and breakdance adapted its flow to a more urban world, especially with Dee Nasty's broadcasts on Radio Nova, and on the other, Italo, new beat, and house began to rule dancefloors. Squeezed between the age of disco and that of modern electronic music, French boogie was a transitional phase, but it remains an amazingly refreshing testimony to the intermingling of pop and underground cultures. The genre was hastily categorized as anecdotal in spite of its pioneering synthetic groove and matchless basslines. An attentive ear will discover the poetry of the ephemeral beyond the eccentricities of the genre, as well as a certain unexpected avant-gardism. At the origin of major music trends, always cheerful and catchy, French boogie is what you need to party. Includes tracks from 1980-1985 by Interview, Krootchey, Gérard Vincent, Style, Pierre Edouard, Casino, Bianca, Trigo & Friends, Hugues Hamilton, Pascal Davoz, Anisette, Pilou, Henriette Coulouvrat, New Paradise, Ich, Attaché Case, and Yannick Chevalier.

VA Moris Zekler: Fuzz & Soul Sega from 70's Mauritius CD
A tax haven and dream destination for wealthy travelers, the Republic of Mauritius is a multi-ethnic country that is currently experiencing full economic and social ascension. Banking, textile, tech, tourism industries... in this fast-paced melting pot, business is strong. But not too far from the heavenly beaches and luxurious hotels are quasi-shantytowns, reminding us that a large part of the population, often Creole (of Afro-Malagasy origin) are still excluded from the "economic miracle of Mauritius." These Creoles are mostly descendants of slaves who were deported in mass in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries from Madagascar and the East African coast for the cultivation of spices and coffee and later sugar cane. On the margins of these hellish plantations was secretly created a music called tchiega, chéga or tsiega, a distant cousin of the blues. The music from Mauritius in the '70s found on this compilation naturally evolved from this original sega. Created at the crossroads of Afro-Malagasy, Western and Indian cultures, pop, soul and funk arrangements, syncopated ternary polyrhythms, saturated guitars, psychedelic organs and Creole vocals, this musical phenomenon is as incredible as a tropical flower in bloom. Although the origins of sega remain quite unknown, it is known that it contains vocal and percussive practices that originated from Madagascar, Mozambique, and East Africa. A social escape and a space for improvisation, satire, and verbal jousting, it transcended everyday life and made room for the expression of conflicts and the transgression of taboos. Inseparable from dance, sega is thus exposed as part of a pair: bodies brush against each other, stare at each other, get excited but never touch each other. The main instrument of sega is the ravanne, a large tambourine-like drum made of a large wooden frame and goat skin. It is accompanied by the maravanne, a rectangular rattle filled with seeds, and also often by a triangle, a bottle, a machete or any metal object that can be hit with a stick. Features Harold Berty, Ti L'Afrique, Claudio Veeraragoo, Paul Labonne, Georges Gabriel, The Features Of Life, Roland Fatime, Jean Claude Gaspard, Jos Henri, Coulouce, John Kenneth Nelson, Lelou Menwar, and Daniel Delord. CD version includes 24-page booklet.

VA Voulez-Vous Cha-Cha?: French Cha-Cha 1960-1964 CD
The record starts out with an esoteric organ, a guitar straight out of a Western, a vibey rhythm section, a speeding saxophone, a glamorous voice, a curious keyboard, a slightly panicky tempo. "Please Mr Hitchock!" calls out a voice from the unknown, on an arrangement that's about to lose control. "Eins Zwei Drei", cries out Spartaco Andreoli, creator of the chachacha for tunas, lyrics that are absurd accompanying music that isn't so much so. "C'est bon ça dis donc!" (This is pretty good), suggest the Los Goragueros, at the start of their "Mambo Miam Miam" (Yum Yum). A smooth sax, a double bass that sways, and shattering percussions, this song anonymously written by Alain Goraguer is actually quite tasty. This arranger and pianist, who went on to write the indispensable Planète Sauvage (Wild Planet), is not the only one to have advanced half-masked in these tropical times. Tropical music and France go way back. The influential Brazilian musician Pixinguinha came through in 1922, the charismatic Cuban singer Rita Montaner triumphed a few years later, and the brilliant clarinetist Stellio from Martinique had everyone dancing through the night to the beguine. It's in bars where Don Marino Barreto's orchestra made the heyday of a surreal and carefree Paris. And after the Second World War, it started all over again. Rico's Creole Band was one of the great Creole orchestras to sway all of Paris, the Blomet Ball brought together the Afro-Caribbean communities, L'Escale became an essential dancing ground for lovers of Latin music, the pianist Eddie Warner was one of these pillars. Shortly after, the Los Machucambos, a South American band created in the Latin Quarter performed music between guajira and flamenco and its song "Pepito" marked the start of the trio's success. Chachacha was officially invented in the early 1950s by Enrique Jorrin, soon followed by the pachanga, becoming a staple of black-and-white films. This Chachacha affair is emblematic of the atypical history of popular music, that of back-alleys, far from the paths and furrows of glory. In terms of Latin music, these records that were patiently found in flea markets are becoming a rarity. These 7-inch vinyl records were recorded at Barclay, Vogue and company -- low-consumption products intended to supply the shelves of budding suburban supermarkets. Features Cassius Simon, Spartaco Andreoli, Billy's Sax, Los Albinos, Los Goragueros, Rol Basti, Gillian Hills, Spartaco Sax, Norman Maine, Les Bretelles, Los Chiquitos, Norman Maine, Jack Ary, Henri Salvador & Jean Yanne, Les Gouapes A Musique, Los Cangaceiros, and Les Kili Cats.

VA Voulez-Vous Cha-Cha?: French Cha-Cha 1960-1964 LP
LP version. Printed under sleeve; Includes download code.

VOX LOW Relectures (Remix) 12"
Maxi 12" with remixes of Vox Low. The ethics of Tolouse Low Trax alias Detlef Weinrich stands out in his multiple releases on labels such as Idle Press, Infiné, Karaoke Kalk, Kunstkopf, Neubau, Themes For Great Cities, Antinote, or Cómeme. The German producer is no newcomer to the scene: still an active member of Kreidler and Toresch, he is the man behind the famous Düsseldorf Salon des Amateurs. Since 2010, the French trio of Abschaum, led by Chris Poincelot, has been navigating wilderness terrain. As if to better release the subtle tension of their music: a definitely krautrock heritage mixed, intrigued, blended with the influences of a raging Alan Vega. Hypnotic, synthetic loops, saturated riffs and black voice, Abschaum, "vermin" in German, has cradled his ears to the sounds of Spacemen 3, Ash Ra Tempel, and Can. Cédric Marszewski, aka Pilooski, started as a sound designer for Radio France. Later, he joined the journalists Guillaume Sorge and Clovis Goux of the D*I*R*T*Y collective. Cédric has published numerous remixes under the name Pilooski for Bryan Ferry, LCD Soundsystem, Tame Impala, Jarvis Cocker, Nina Simone, Alain Chamfort, Mark E. Smith Von Sudenfed, also Metronomy, Yelle, and Joakim. Boss of the label Evrlst.inc and of the famous record store of the same name in Nice, Orestt is also a rare and emeritus producer. A handful of EPs have been released under his name, notably on I'm A Cliché, Cosmo Vitelli's label. His first "remix" is here and it's in the same vein as his productions: synthetic, dark, and hypnotic.

VA Tchic Tchic: French Bossa Nova 1963-1974 CD
Ever since the late 1950s bossa-nova revolution, Brazil's influence on French music has been undeniable. Pierre Barouh, Georges Moustaki, and a vast array of lesser known artists, all made the Musica Popular Brasileira (MPB) an axis of promotion at the service of a cool and metaphysical, modern and mixed Brazilian lifestyle. Some were seduced by the poetic languor of the bossa, some were looking for fun, and others just loved the American hybridization of jazz-bossa, jazz-samba. With emotion, arrangements for violin and supple guitar licks, bossa nova rapidly changed. A transformation that can be heard in the Tchic Tchic: French Bossa Nova 1963-1974 compilation, the result of a cultural reappropriation, which traveled through the United States and supplemented itself in France. A musical revolution that has remained significant, bossa nova was born in Rio. From 1956 to 1961, Brazil lived through its golden years. In five years, the country had invented its modernist style. American jazzmen then took over. In particular, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and guitarist Charlie Byrd. In November 1962, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs funded a "Bossa-Nova" concert at Carnegie Hall in New York, inviting the genre's pioneers. In Brazil, the 1964 military coup quickly ended this euphoria. The destructive atmosphere that ensued pushed many Brazilian musicians to leave, if not to exile. Thus, Tom Jobim, Sergio Mendes, and Joao Gilberto arrived to the United States. In New York, Joao Gilberto met saxophonist Stan Getz. At the time, he was married to the Bahianese Astrud Weinert Gilberto, who had a German father. She had never sung before, but she knew how to speak English. Getz therefore asked her to replace her husband on "The Girl From Ipanema". The Getz/Gilberto record with Tom Jobim on piano, was released in March 1964. Phil Ramone, the "pope of pop" was in charge of sound. Bossa nova arrived in Paris through the classic "guitar-voice" channel. But France loved jazz and Paris had already welcomed its American contributors. Features Les Masques, Isabelle Aubret, Christianne Legrand, Jean Constantin, Billy Nencioli & Baden Powell, Marpessa Dawn, Jean-Pierre Sabar, Sophia Loren, Isabelle, Sylvia Fels, Frank Gérard, Ann Sorel, Charles Level, Andrea Parisy, Audrey Arno, Aldo Frank, Clarinha, Hit Parade des Enfants, Jean-Pierre Lang, Magalie Noël, and Françoise Legrand. CD version includes 24-page booklet with liner notes in French and English.

MARIETTA Prapezam St. CD
It's not easy mapping Marietta's journey -- one of the key players of the GrandeTriple Alliance De l'Est, an anarchic scene which exploded between Metz and Strasbourg in the early 2000s, fronting bands such as A.H. Kraken, Plastobe?ton, and The Feeling Of Love. In 2015, he released his first solo album, Basement Dreams Are The Bedroom Cream (BORNBAD 074CD/LP, 2015), an amazing collection of 4-track twisted lullabies who got him comparisons with Syd Barrett and John Frusciante. Then comes his second LP and suddenly, no more of that sweet demo sounding folky weirdness: La Passage?re (BORNBAD 097CD/LP, 2017) was recorded in Los Angeles with Chris Cohen and it's a lush and mesmerizing record. Richer and fuller than the two previous records, Prazepam St. is also, paradoxically, unabashed and easier to grasp. "I wanted to have fun," says Marietta. "Build a dark and bright world with my little hands and raw material, like David Lynch when he did Eraserhead" -- one of the main keys to the album. It is also, more involuntarily a synthesis -- there's the raw side of the first album, that more flamboyant and ambitious of the second, but also small pieces of AH Kraken, Feeling Of Love and even Funk Police. Marietta went back to some of his teenage years favorite records -- Sonic Youth, Beck, Nirvana, the Beastie Boys, but also Jim O'Rourke or David Pajo. Prazepam St. is also a dark and twisted record, as its title shows -- a reference to an anxiolytic used for severe depression. "I have often tried to speak in my lyrics of the way the human mind works, of our contradictions, of our inner darkness," explains Marietta. "And this time I wanted to bring the lexical field of drugs into my texts. Our body and mind are shaped by these substances that we use and abuse and I wanted to play with that. It's a chemical album." Proof made with "DMPA", a molecule used as a chemical castrator on American sex offenders, transformed here into a battered folk song crushed by samples, rhythm machines and breaks from outer space. Or "Aluminum", a solid and shiny but highly harmful element, like the incandescent ride full of rumbling synths, which opens the album. CD version includes 16-page booklet.

STAR FEMININE BAND Star Feminine Band CD
Without warning, a group of young girls from a remote region of Benin is shaking up the world of garage rock with breathtaking freshness, ingenuity and energy, playing spot-on, loud and clear. A musician named André Baleguemon decided to form an exclusively female band rooted in the concerns of its time. He puts the spotlight on the guitar, drums, and keyboard, instruments he has admired since his childhood, symbols of modernity in this remote region. Originally from Tchaourou, a vast commune located in central eastern Benin, André Balaguemon developed a passion for music at a very young age. During the 1990s, he joined the Sam 11 Orchestra in Parakou, in the northeastern part of the country. In 1999, he spent some time in Cotonou before settling in the northwest, in order to reconnect with his roots and musical passions. On July 25th, 2016, with the support of the city of Natitingou, André launched a press release on Nanto FM offering to help train girls in music for free. Since the independence era, having your own instruments has always been the prerequisite of any self-respected African orchestra. The girls have already performed dozens of concerts in the region, forging and expanding an already solid repertoire, while attracting an ever-increasing local audience. In addition to musical progress, he has been personally involved with each family, showing them the importance of his project, both musically and humanly and in particular the fact that each girl must remain in school and not be forced into marriage. There are very few female bands in the history of popular African music. If the Amazones de Guinée, la Famille Bassavé, and les Colombes de la Révolution in Burkina, the Soeurs Comoë in Ivory Coast or the Lijadu Sisters in Nigeria notably come to mind, Star Feminine Band has no equivalent in Benin. The originality, carefree attitude, freedom, and above all the talent of these young girls is undeniable. At the end of 2018, their encounter with the young French sound engineer Jérémie Verdier accelerated the course of things. On a mission in the region, he called on his Spanish friends Juan Toran and Juan Serra who showed up with their recording equipment in order to record the band's first songs in the annex of the local museum. Random encounters and fate led Jean-Baptiste Guillot to hear the tapes. CD version includes 36-page booklet.

LEYS, BRUNO Maintenant Je Suis Un Voyou 7"
You heard him first on WIZZZ Vol. 2 (BORNBAD 013CD/LP) with the explosive "Maintenant je suis un voyou (Now I'm a hoodlum)." Here he is again, with his full EP never released before. But, let's go back in time... In early 1967, Bruno Leys was attending medical school in Paris. Driving back to the university with a friend, Bruno sang along nonchalantly with the songs on the radio. His friend was surprised to discover his lovely voice and encouraged him to audition for a group composed of friends from the university who were looking for a singer. Bruno was not selected for the group, but became friends with one of its members, Emmanuel Pairault. Emmanuel had been studying economics, but decided to enter the music conservatory instead, to learn the drums and the use of the illustrious Ondes Martenot, a primitive electronic musical instrument. He composed a few solo numbers, remarkable for their use of that instrument. Looking for someone to write lyrics to go with his instrumental tracks, he asked Bruno to try a few. Bruno and Emmanuel thereby put together a small repertoire, with no ambition other than to have fun. Although the details are now forgotten, they worked hard to bring their song to the attention of Nicole Croisille (a singer and actress), who suggested sending the demo to her friend Norbert Saada, who headed a label called La Compagnie. This unprecedented use of the Ondes Martenot in a pop song attracted Saada, who offered to make a record. Emmanuel quickly assembled a small team to make the recording. The sessions took place at Dominique Blanc Francart's studio on rue de la Gaîté in Paris, with Bernard Lubat on percussion, François Rabath on stand-up bass, Jimenez and Jean-Pierre Dariscuren playing guitar, Emmanuel Pairault and Sylvain Gaudelette on the Ondes Martenot, not to mention Bruno on vocals. Four tracks were recorded for the EP: "Maintenant je suis un voyou," "Eve," "Hallucinations," and "Galaxie." With the sessions completed, Bruno left for his obligatory military service and thus lost control over things. Saada pressed a promotional 45 in an attempt to find a licensing deal in Canada, to no avail. A real collector's item, this 45 includes "Maintenant je suis un voyou" and "Galaxie." Back from his military service, Bruno learned that Saada had gone out of business and sold his catalog, putting an end to any hope of issuing the EP (1969). "Eve" has never before appeared on a record.

VA Cha-Cha au Harem: Orientica - France 1960-1964 CD
France, which welcomed Omar Sharif's first feature films outside of Egypt, produced a delirious amount of music of Latin or Middle Eastern inspiration, grouped behind the genre named "typical". This "typical" production is enough to scare away the most motivated and adventurous of listeners: overabundant and often blurry versions, anonymous performers, and only a few noteworthy songs. Venturing into the moving waters of orchestral music undoubtedly causes disappointment, but one can find a few cha-cha-cha pearls played in a Cuban or Middle Eastern style. The Cha-Cha au Harem compilation offers a tender vision of pre-sexual revolution Gaullian France. Including all the stereotypes on exotic countries; culinary specialties, sensual oriental dances, exaggerated accents, bewitching chants performed on minor Hungarian scales by European instruments accompanied by percussion of an unknown origin. Bob Azzam, an Egyptian singer of Lebanese origin, made it popular in 1960 with "Mustapha" and "Fais-moi du Couscous, Chérie" (Make me Couscous, Darling). Léo Clarens the French-born Caliph of Francophone oriental Cha-Cha-Cha is omnipresent in this compilation, under his various stage names. In Paris, he recorded his first records for the Philips label in the 1950s thanks to the famous Jacques Canetti. Apart from his recordings under various pseudonyms (Kemal Rachid, the Kili-Cats), the Marseille musician became a popular arranger, in particular for Michel Sardou. Clarens was not the only one to give in to oriental cha-cha-cha. A number of musicians threw themselves to the task, most often with mediocre results, but with a few nice surprises such as Benny Benett or Los Cangaceiros. Benett is a jazz drummer, he discovered Cuban music through his first wife Cathalina. From then on, he recorded mambos, calypsos, boleros and cha-cha-cha including their oriental variations with the excellent "Couscous" and "Ismaëlia". Los Cangaceiros were a Paris based band led by Yvan Morice. The omnipresence of percussion and drums on "Oriental Express" gives us some indication of Roger Morris's favorite instrument: the drums. He published half a dozen EPs, mainly for the Homère label, as well as two albums, one typical of the early sixties (Surprise Party 2) and a second, Library at L'Illustration Musicale. Raymond Lefèvre's career was much better documented. Present on this compilation thanks to his reinterpretation of the Lawrence of Arabia theme written by the great Maurice Jarre (father of Jean Michel) in a Bolero style. Also features Zina Nahid, Fred Adison Et Son Orchestre, Kemal Rachid Et Ses Ottomans, Staiffi Et Ses Mustafa's, Los Matecoco, Trio Joroca, Mohammed Ben Abdel Kader, and Ali Baba Et Son Ensemble. LE VILLEJUIF UNDERGROUND Les Huitres A Cancale 7"
After the release of last year's Ferarock most played When Will The Flies In Deauville Drop (BORNBAD 111CD/LP, 2019), Le Villejuif Underground decided to do absolutely nothing for a year, and took an early retirement. A 20-date tour of Europe was cancelled the day before! Their separation was announced on TV5 Monde and to one confused journalist from Liberation. A few months later, a song for a world-renowned fashion label wasn't completed in time for the catwalk and instead members got sloppy drunk, and fought in the streets of Paris whilst their singer was lost somewhere in the Sahara Desert with passport issues. Opportunities lost! Bridges burnt! All dreams destroyed! Many thought they would never come back, others didn't even notice, but whether you like it or not Le Villejuif Underground are back, with a two-song single out on the only home that will have them, Born Bad Records. Listeners: This is Villejuif in surround sound high definition! "Ghost Of The Water" is a hallucination of alcoholism, from different shaky view points and sounds like a sci-fi space/opera Lee Hazlewood western if soundtracked by a collaboration between The UV Race/The Strokes 2001: Space Odyssey. "Les Huitres a Cancale", is a Kenneth Koch-like animal call to stalkers, and strangers out there on the loose in the "moi aussi" generation and rolls like an ageing Gainsbourg slow dancing on codeine, a druggy ballad for the tranquilized. And just when you thought the world of music had ended, Le Villejuif Underground is back from retirement! "The more medicated, The more dedicated."

CYRIL CYRIL Yallah Mickey Mouse CD
Cyril Cyril stirs the snow globe, Helvet underground as they are called. Cyril Cyril's Sunday is a trance, you arrive, people gather. The samples vocals, hesitates, moans a little, Miami Beach, OK let's go. This is how Cyril Cyril introduce their new album Yallah Mickey Mouse. Once again, they take back their instruments and their roots with their ruffled tips. It is not about untangling. The sonorities are sculpted in vibrating marbles with indocile fossils. A visionary sonic narration, an invitation to an unorganized journey. Multiple influences are called on in the frame of this project of personal emanations and studio research. A tribute to the friends of Hyperculte in memory of an Egyptian camel, winks to the phrasing of Cha Cha Guitry, to the animal of Gerard Manset or to the hand of Indochine. Cyril Bondi is at the drums with his custom instruments, his body is trained to the groove of the wizards, and the fanfare of delirious insects starts. Cyril Yeterian is on the banjo or on the electric guitar. His storyteller's voice, that has travelled time and migrations, resumes the stories suspended since our last meeting. Cyril Cyril carries our voices, including the ones of those who are no longer here. They come back, it's crazy how modern they are, and then without embarrassment too, without embarrassment and generous, happy to be able to regain a little youth, it looks lost, they sing. Cyril Cyril carries their voices. Reeds, hands, undulate, breathe, like this music. Cyril Cyril carries our bodies. The ternary scale of our emotions and our smiles that come back. The wave makes you lose control, but the harmonies gently overtake this feeling as you lay on the sand. Also, the irony. The figures of power, the small march of insects accompanies them while laughing, these presidents. And always the surprise, bells ring in all you ears, eyes, and hands. Cyril Cyril carries your senses. Cyril Cyril opens your mind. You resonate more and more, you get more and more entangled, everything intertwines, the sounds and their lights. The psychedelic organ melody accompanies the voice which rises in the higher frequencies, the percussions encourage you. You accelerate the pulsation, you get closer and stomp together, you want the head of Mickey Mouse. Echoes of bird songs, of a bestiary. You are animals, the carnival of animals.

ROEDELIUS Wasser Im Wind LP
2021 restock. LP version on 180 gram vinyl. Of all the Hans-Joachim Roedelius solo releases, this is the one which most closely resembles the work of Cluster. Wasser Im Wind sees Roedelius use a wide variety of musical and sonic ingredients hitherto associated with Cluster, almost as if he sought to erect a monument to the group. Right from the word "go," the familiar sound of the Drummer One rhythm machine can be discerned on the opening track, like a wood gnome crashing his way through the shire; then we hear those hand-played, swirling keyboard patterns so typical of Roedelius; his drifting melodies, with no beginning or end, gone before one has barely recognized them; synthetic sounds recalling the heroic era of the mid-'70s; and occasional glimpses of the shadow of Dieter Moebius as sounds and forms emerge from his cosmos. Might one suggest that Roedelius recorded a Cluster album all by himself? No, absolutely not! The astute listener will note how effortlessly Roedelius performs his balancing act on Wasser Im Wind. The album captures Roedelius on the threshold of something quite new to him. On the one hand, the electronic elements he utilizes recall the Cluster virtues he knew so well, on the other hand, he is already experimenting with a wealth of baroque forms which will come to influence his playing in the future, particularly with regard to the piano. So Wasser Im Wind is no longer the past, nor is it quite the future. Piano features prominently on this LP, but has not yet taken center stage. By inviting the saxophonist Czjzek to join him on three album tracks, Roedelius manages to confuse matters splendidly, as two seemingly incompatible musical notions meet head on. Nevertheless, Roedelius' spirit floats above these waters as well, transforming the listener's initial irritation into baffled amazement.

KLUSTER Schwarz (Eruption) LP
2021 restock; LP version. Comes on 180 gram vinyl and includes download card for the album. The official Konrad Schnitzler discography lists Eruption, released in 1971, under the title Schwarz, as the first Schnitzler album. In actual fact, Eruption is the third and final LP by the group Kluster, following Klopfzeichen (BB 110CD/LP) and Zwei Osterei (BB 111CD/LP). The line-up printed on the labels leaves no room for doubt. Unlike the two previous albums, Eruption was not issued by the Schwann Verlag, but by the band on its own, hence the task of financing the record fell to the participants. Roedelius and Moebius, however, were either unable or unwilling to get involved in this risky business. Without further ado, Schnitzler decided to cover the cost of pressing up 200 LPs which he would bring out under his own name. This historical "error" has now been corrected: Eruption is a Kluster album. Seen alongside Klopfzeichen and Zwei Osterei, Eruption is a different beast altogether. The total absence of lyrics, to begin with; the music is music, nothing more. The listener revels in a pure symphony of sound, its dramatic artistry holding his attention until the very end. And that is the second major difference to the first two LPs. Whereas their furious intensity sounded almost brutally improvised, Eruption appears clearly structured throughout, musical freedoms notwithstanding. Kluster take their time in developing spontaneous ideas here, they get loud and then, for lengthier periods, go quiet, suggesting at times a sense of absolute emptiness, followed by outbreaks of dark anger. The possibilities opened up by live electronics were thrillingly exploited to the limit. And yet there is undeniably a method in the music. In the course of their many live concerts, Kluster had learned to use instruments and electronics constructively, reaching the zenith of their musical powers of expression on Eruption. Kluster disbanded after Eruption. The album is a revealing document of a band striving to stretch the musical spectrum during the early 1970s, and indeed, how capable they were of doing so. Moebius and Roedelius went on working together as Cluster, and Conrad Schnitzler (now with a C) began developing his own vision of electronic music, a project he continued assiduously until his death (2011). Still, all three had their roots in Kluster -- incredibly powerful roots. And Kluster have never ceased to be hugely fertile ground. May their creative inspiration never run dry.

DINGER, THOMAS Fur mich LP
2021 restock; LP version, on 180 gram vinyl. Tired of quarreling endlessly with his imperious brother Klaus, Thomas Dinger quit the production of Viva, the second La Düsseldorf album, and promptly set off for the south of France. Frustrated and far away from home, his mind turned to the possibility of a solo album. An album devoted to his own musical ideas, free from domineering voices telling him what to do. Presenting his own vision in the context of a La Düsseldorf LP would have been difficult at the best of times. "I wanted to create something by myself, to make something just for me and nobody else," the third member of the band Hans Lampe recalls him saying -- hence the album title Für mich. He recorded the album in La Düsseldorf's studio in 1981, with Hans Lampe on board as co-producer and engineer. The six instrumental pieces, melancholic and elegiac in character, featured layers of synthesizer sounds, closer to the music of Wolfgang Riechmann or Michael Rother than that of La Düsseldorf. (The pulsating 4/4 beat associated with Klaus Dinger can be heard just the once. Two tracks are actually written in a 3/4 signature). The nearest points of reference in the La Düsseldorf canon might be the more measured "Rheinita" and "Silver Cloud." In the studio, Dinger and Lampe allowed themselves plenty of time to experiment. As Thomas wished, his brother Klaus stayed away from the recording and mixing sessions. Hans Lampe described the creative process thus: "There was a large balcony to the rear of Thomas' apartment, looking onto a vast, overgrown courtyard. A little park, a verdant oasis in the big city. We sat here often, listening to music, working on the LP and musing on life. Thomas and I complemented each other marvelously, bouncing ideas off each other. Our understanding was so great, the mood was so deep and heartfelt, we thoroughly enjoyed working together." Which is how the album sounds: simultaneously conveying a sense of somber depth and unfettered lightness, even playfulness.

BUZZCOCKS Late For The Train: Live And In Session 1989-2016 6CD BOX
"Buzzcocks require no introduction. Pivotal to the punk and DIY movements, the group, led by frontman Pete Shelley and co-conspirator Steve Diggle, brought an essential pop sensibility and sartorial style to the late 1970s and early 1980s. Having disbanded in 1981, the band regrouped in 1989 and began to tour the world and record new music, becoming legends in their own lifetime in the process. Late For The Train explores the group's live career, and their ongoing relationship with the BBC, for whom they recorded multiple excellent sessions and live performances over the years. Crammed with previously unreleased recordings, long-forgotten shows and brilliant renditions of seminal tracks from their growing back catalogue, this companion piece to this year's critically acclaimed Sell You Everything studio box set is produced in association with Buzzcocks, and includes notes from Steve Diggle alongside fan reminiscences, live photographs and recording information."

CLAVIS Rocket Dial EP 12"
Clavis is the formidable production duo of Manuel Tur and Adrian Hoffmann (aka Urban Absolutes). Having been friends since high school, it still took another decade after graduation until they released their first joint EP on Freerange Records in 2015. Since then the duo has steadily built up a discography based on a 'one EP a year' principle and selected remixes for artists like Ane Brun or Andhim. Besides Clavis, they are also involved in the production of several other projects, such as Amberoom, which recently caused quite a stir with remixes by Dixon and Isolée. Clavis live and work in Essen, Germany. The three energetic synth disco tunes from Clavis's Rocket Dial EP emerged from more or less spontaneous live jams with some vintage hardware, such as Roland TR-808 and SH-09 spiced up with modern drums and guitar overdubs. VA Colliding Wind LP
The ambient/cross-genres record label Concentric Records launches Colliding Wind, the second compilation of its introductory release trilogy. Featuring music by Christina Vantzou, Echium, Etapp Kyle, Jana Winderen, Kareem Lotfy, Soundwalk Collective, Tragic Selector (Daisuke Tadokoro and Terre Thaemlitz), the album is composed of a wide spectrum of ambient, field recording-based, and experimental works, exploring unexpected sonic spaces and evocative landscapes. Colliding Wind is inspired by the powerful force that is produced when a minimum of two beings or elements are combined and acting together. The opening track is Soundwalk Collective's "Running On Emptiness". Commissioned by Sasha Waltz for her three-hour epic choreography "E????? I Exodos", the piece is composed out of moving architectural structures and their echoing resonances. Over the past few years, Etapp Kyle's cavernous and often hallucinatory techno has dovetailed into an obsession with spatial qualities of sound. "10K" was originally recorded in 2017 as a simple piano-leading ambient track during a home studio session. It was developed further only in 2020 after Concentric Records invited Kyle to contribute to the project. Tragic Selector is the duo comprised of Daisuke Tadokoro and Terre Thaemlitz. This piano piece was originally composed for an event with the Japanese Butoh dance ensemble Dairakudakan. The Kareem Lotfy (Arabic: ???? ????) is an electronic music producer, graphic designer and visual artist from Egypt, who lives and works in Cairo. "Molten Tactics" offers a palpable departure from his usually lush and visceral ambiance, notably heard on Kelela's AQUAPHORIA mixtape and PAN's mono no aware compilation. Christina Vantzou's "Dvorjacked" is a rework of Dvor?a?k's "American" Quartet - Movement II (Lento). Vantzou uses modular synthesizer called the Morphagene to loop and process the public domain recording. Jana Winderen is an artist who currently lives and works in Norway. "The Listener" is a sound composition created from hydrophones and sound field recordings in and by the River Orne in Normandy. "The Listener" (six channel audio installation) was part of the exhibition Second Nature and the project Nature and Renaturation: A Sensory Overview of a History of Changing Watercourses. As part of the next wave of artists innovating within dub techno and experimental ambient zones, Echium looks to loosen up its strictures while playing deep within its unfathomable dimensions. "Compulsions of Reality" explores the emotions built into daily existence. 180 gram vinyl; includes insert; edition of 200.

TUNES OF NEGATION Like The Stars Forever And Ever 2LP
Shackleton's Tunes Of Negation ensemble return for a ceremonious second album trip into expansive psychedelic terrain following their acclaimed first chapter with a pineal payload where Gurdjieff meets Conrad Schnitzler in deep dub space. Regrouping Sam Shacketon, Takumi Motokawa, and Raphael Meinhart, with Heather Leigh guesting on album highlight "Naked Shall I Return", Shackleton's open-ended project continues to soar across musical borders with growing confidence in their astral clinamen that suggests themes of impermanence, rebirth, and transcendence. It's primed for gently getting out of your gourd and gliding the astral armchair highways in a way which has signified all Shackleton's best work of late. The six tracks are typically long enough to encourage full mind/body synchronization and immersion, aligning your chakras in a slowly purposeful flow from the cascading organs and babbling drums of "Mountain and Waterfalls", through the spellbinding suspension of Heather Leigh's possessed tongue in acres of Coil-esque synth plumes and militant snares on the outstanding centerpiece, "Naked Shall I Return", with the rolling 15-minute epic "Impermanence" illustrating Shackleton's transition from dubstep pied piper to modern day shaman. Like The Stars Forever And Ever is further evidence of mystic energy still out there in the ether between club music, the after-party-life, and lockdown bedrooms, and a sterling example of Shackleton's vital role in the fabric of contemporary electronic music. VA Saturday Night: South African Disco Pop Hits CD
"The 1980s were an epoch of upheaval and rapid change in South Africa. The decade began with the country's apartheid government fighting to maintain its institutionalized racial segregation in the face of global protests and demands for the release of human rights activist Nelson Mandela, who had been jailed since the early 1960s. By 1990, Mandela was free, and apartheid was on the way to being dismantled. On the music front, things were changing too; At the beginning of the decade, the main music style of black South Africans was the jazzy indigenous jive of mbaqanga, a provincial style that had held its place as the sound of South Africa since Mandela was first imprisoned. By the end of the decade, South African music stars were making international waves with bubblegum, a flashy variety of Afro-techno-pop. In Saturday Night: South African Disco Pop Hits, Cultures of Soul explores this period of change, and the intermediary forms that filled the gap between mbaqanga and bubblegum. The years when South African musicians and producers wrestled with the incursion of foreign disco and formulated their own style of homegrown disco-pop. Starting from the early '80s, when bands like Varikweru, Black Five and Soundburger essayed local attempts at boogie and jazz-fusion, through experiments like the Madonna-cloned diva Margino, who domesticized the burgeoning Italo-disco and NYC electro sounds, up through the massive breakthrough of Brenda and the Big Dudes, who arrived at the right mix between native and international influences to point the way forward for South African pop. The sound on these records is ostensibly familiar, drawing heavily on models from the 1980s dance culture in Europe and America, but if you listen closely enough you can hear the distinct South African-ness of it all -- from the deep, burbling basslines, the brightly hypnotic melodies, and chant-like lyrics -- and with sounds as intoxicating as these, you will sure want to listen closely. And often!"

BABY IN VAIN See Through LP
Baby In Vain's See Through is a sonic taxonomy of resistance rock. It is at times upfront and confrontational, a little dangerous in the detuned dirge of Sonic Youth or sleazy fuzz shimmy of Royal Trux, emphatic and big, the lip sometimes curling into a sneer. At other times it is internal and contained, crystalline, shy and pretty like shoegaze, leading with fine dynamics, or filled with the faraway choral warmth of dream pop, the gentle unity of girl-group gang vocals, or the tentative joy of garage, where all the possibilities of kids with two guitars and a drum set were born. See Through is instinctive -- it doesn't mean to contain the history of DIY expression in all its rawness and vulnerability. It doesn't wish to look back. It is, ultimately, a record made by young people, about being a young person. Its themes include self-image, love and lust, risk-taking, abandonment and society. Children of the 21st-century draw strength from the children before them, forging their own splintered identities from the ruins and relics around them while never losing sight of the fact that making your noise on your terms is still the best first step in finding yourself and fixing your world in place. Baby In Vain is: Lola Hammerich Binzer (vocal, guitar), Andrea Thuesen Johansen (vocal, guitar), Benedicte Pierleoni-Nielsen (drums). Produced by Baby In Vain and Nis Bysted (Iceage, Chorus Grant). Mixed by Baby In Vain and Nis Bysted. Master by ET Mastering. All music written and performed by Baby In Vain. Additional strings on "Million" and "See Through" by Nils Gröndahl. HURLEY, MICHAEL Blue Navigator LP
"Pleased as punch are we to be reissuing Michael Hurley's long-lost 1984 album, Blue Navigator. Admittedly, Secret Seven and Mississippi collaborated on a dandy 8-track version a decade ago, but the record has mostly been available as an obscure import CD -- if at all -- for many a year. The reason for this is that the Rooster Records HQ burned down in 1987, taking master tapes, extra covers and whatever else there was with it. This was a general bummer, but especially so for us Hurley fans, since his final LP with Rounder was Snockgrass in 1980, and he didn't hook up with Fundamental to do Watertower until 1987. The disappearance of Blue Navigator from this earth left a sizable hole. Which we'd now like to think has been plugged. Recorded with a cast of Northern Vermont hepcats including guitarist Jon Weber (of Dan Hicks' original Hot Licks), head Rooster William Wright on guitar and mandolin, Nancy Beavan on vocals, Gordon Stone on pedal steel and various other goners, all playing some sweet rural swing displaying exactly how Hurley became the toast of the snowmobile club circuit during his days in the North Country. A mix of old favorites -- 'Werewolf,' 'Open Up (Eternal Lips)' -- new favorites -- 'Code of the Mountains,' 'Ghost Woman Blues' -- and even a re-write -- 'Blue Navigator' -- it's a great, very casual sounding session, revealing more layers the more you listen. The instrumentation varies a lot between tunes, but the music always flows with Snocky grace and assurance. For this reissue, Michael has written a set of illustrated liner notes that scoot around just the way his conversation does on a long car ride. Which makes me miss the open road as much as anything else today. Just close your eyes, sink back into the music on Blue Navigator and pretend you're drifting through the hills and valleys of the Green Mountain State on your way to a cold growler of beer. You'll soon feel like a million bucks. Promise!" --Byron Coley, 2020

DEAD SEA APES Night Lands LP
"Hot on the heels of last year's drone masterpiece, The Free Territory, comes this hot bowl of noodles from Manchester's most elegantly wasted quintet. And while there might be apt comparisons to be made to some of the best current psych purveyors, the central thrill provided by these sounds makes me think of naught but prime Bay Area ballroom scene acid spew. The guitar lines unspool like electrical cables filled with acid punch, and remain crackling in the air for moments longer than you imagine they can remain afloat. The keys have a bit of a German overtone, but it's the same sort of one that led to the flash of Popol Vuh's United Artist albums (which are themselves, at heart, paeans to the Bay.) The sound here is the sort of thing true believers recall as the highest moments of Man in live concert flight. Raging, raving guitars to soak your soul once and for all. Don't fear the downpour. STONE/DEAD SEA APES/BLACK TEMPEST, ADAM Dataland LP
Dataland is a collaboration with Black Tempest and Adam Stone, achieved mainly through internet data transfer during the Covid lockdown of 2020. Insistent, evolving electronic sounds encounter a variety of guitars and percussion, from the clockwork kosmische of "Lost Hours" to the stumbling noise dub of "Shop Soiled", while Adam Stone's words meditate on life in the post-industrial west, our increasingly atomized and data-driven society and its logical conclusion in a corporatized dystopia. Dataland is a meditation upon the average existence of a "developed-world" human in the early 21st century. Whilst not struggling with the harsh physical demands of industrial labor as we did in the recent past, our plight continues to embody the melancholia and confusion of alienation. Under the bewildering complexity of rationalized social and economic systems, we may indeed have become unwitting prisoners within, what the sociologist Max Weber termed, "the iron cage of bureaucracy" -- tripping the minutes away in a daily pantomime of data-driven surrealism. This six-song collection is a fusion of electronica, monologue, "real drums", and guitar, and was recorded at various locations in sad old England over the last two years or so. An almost psychedelic sense of puzzlement, nausea, and fatigue accompanies being lost in the omnipresent number-generating machines and anti-human modelling systems that now run our world. This is the realization that defines the essence of the album -- that your life is now only as real as what is displayed on the screen of your constant technological companion.

SZEMZO, TIBOR Snapshot From The Island LP
Hungarian "minimalist" instrumentalist/composer Tibor Szemz? is considered a genius by many, although his accomplishments as an artist are sometimes overshadowed by the likes of superstars, Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Snapshot From The Island was originally released by Leo Records in 1987 and now 33 years later the album gets the proper reissue on his own label. Snapshot From The Island is a wonderful excursion into ambient-electronic-acoustic dreamscapes which could also be considered an offshoot of what many call the "minimalist movement". The title track, "Snapshot From The Island" is a 24-minute tone poem featuring Szemz? performing on computer drums and flutes of various pitch. Here, Szemz? provides a soft rhythmic undercurrent to balance the somewhat ethereal and delightfully hypnotic motif as he also electronically emulates bird and animal sounds which magnifies the mood or imagery of a faraway "Island" paradise. Szemz? is a true artist, a painter with a fertile imagination, as he invites the listener into his introspective world of thoughts and dreams. Szemz?'s lush, yet subtle flute work evokes a surreal landscape on "Water-Wonder". On this piece, Szemz? pursues circular passages while also intelligently utilizing a dash of echo to enhance the aura of a magical or mystical place, which for all intents and purposes seems timeless or otherworldly. "Let's Go Out And Dance" is a dream-laden piece, featuring Szemz?'s "cosmic" flute performances atop a soft pulse and László Hortobágyi's synthesizer backwashes which conveys a sense of fulfillment or perhaps a scenario of -- peaceful celebration. Again, Szemz? offers up more visions of paradise, which could very well have been a subtitle to this beautiful recording. The overall organic nature of Tibor Szemz?'s music makes it all seem so real or something that our imaginations can easily grasp. There are no hidden clues or underlying mysteries behind all of this as Szemz?'s artistry speaks for itself. A museum piece for the ears. Remastered by István Szelényi, 2020.

COVERDALE, KARA-LIS Aftertouches LP
Kara-Lis Coverdale's sublime sophomore side of post-sacred music becomes the first vinyl edition on her new label Gate, following its keenly sought-after 2015 tape release with a vital reminder of the Canadian composer's early and enduring genius. Iridescent with optimistic melody and holographic harmony, Aftertouches was Coverdale's first release to gain widespread recognition, placing her elusive music firmly in the upper echelons of contemporary composition. It was duly hailed as a masterwork of postmodern musical craft, building on the low-key but leading examples of her tentative A 480 (2014) tape with a flourishing development of an intrepid, dream-weaving and world building style. Using readily available samples and filigree production techniques, Coverdale gives voice to her machines' memory banks in nine perceptively absorbing explorations of the "uncanny valley" located between known and simulated worlds. She beautifully transfigures virtual choirs into coded realism, drawing upon a fine-honed balance of discipline and intuition, learned from years of playing church organ, to create a bridge between medieval, classical, and 20th century formalism, and 21st century soundspheres. The album's heady array of shatterproof choral vocals and dematerialized strings remains among the lushest, most intangible and thizzing explorations of the space between classical and experimental realms released during the 2010s. And, most remarkably, done in a way that had simply not been realized so fully in this sphere prior to Coverdale's emergence as a notable, often subversive, figure within her field; lighting the path ahead in a manner comparable to the likes of James Ferraro or Arca, but gifted with a truly singular spirit. UGK Ridin' Dirty 2LP
2021 repress; clear vinyl. "Ridin' Dirty is the third studio album by dirty south legends Bun B and Pimp C -- together known as UGK. It is easily considered one of the greatest southern hip hop albums ever made, but let's drop all the labels this is just pure good rap music, for any region. It's all right there, everything that people have come to expect from Houston rap: candy-painted cars, wood-grained steering wheels, flashy jewelry, late-night odes to lean and weed, passing references to DJ Screw tapes, those warm funk synthesizers that sound like radio oldies. All of Ridin' Dirty feels iconic now -- among other reasons, because so many of its lyrics have since been cribbed by everyone from Slim Thug to Jay Z. There's the laid-back badassery of 'Diamonds and Wood,' the zoned-out celebration of '3 in the Morning,' the ridiculous boasting of 'Fuck My Car.' Everything here is essential. Ridin' Dirty was produced entirely by Pimp C and features start to finish bangers such as 'One Day', 'Murder,' 'Hi Lif,' and of course the title track 'Ridin' Dirty.' Pimp C makes use of perfectly chosen soul, funk, and gospel samples to create a perfect soundscape for he and Bun B to trade verse over. Despite there being no singles or videos released from the album, the set went on to be a pivotal moment in southern hip hop as well as UGK's best-selling and most critically acclaimed release."

AXELROD, DAVID Seriously Deep LP
2021 repress. "The rediscovery of the music of David Axelrod in the 1990s was a revelation to the scores of hip-hop and breakbeat DJs that sampled him, but his composition genius was on display as early as the 1960s. After producing and arranging major critical and commercial hits for Lou Rawls, The Electric Prunes, David McCallum, and Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley, he was encouraged by Capitol Records to record and produce solo material. Coming right on the heels of The Beatles' revolutionary 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, Axelrod would produce a slew of instrumental baroque pop records, which were intricately orchestrated, fused elements of jazz, psychedelic rock, chamber music, and neo-classical, and tackled issues of mental enlightenment, environmental impact, and would be hailed by critics as highly ambitious pieces of conceptual art. The albums Song Of Innocence (1968), Songs Of Experience (1969), and Earth Rot (1970) are most often hailed as David Axelrod's finest moments, but little is mentioned of the producer's 1970s material. Among these records is Seriously Deep, his lone album recorded for Polydor, and an unheralded gem of jazz-rock fusion. On Seriously Deep, Axelrod dispenses with the heavily orchestrated measures of previous works to conduct a powerhouse crew of session musicians, including Leon Ndugu Chancler of Santana on drums, Mailto Correa on percussion, Jim Hughart on bass, Joe Sample on electric keys, and many others, with production from frequent Axelrod collaborators Cannonball Adderley and Jimmy Bowen. Seriously Deep is an obscure release, but also one of David Axlerod's tightest, and most exploratory ones. Across six tracks, Axelrod and his collective of players dip in and out of bounding jazz-funk, Afro-Latin grooves, cinematic flourishes, psychedelic synth washes, and blaring big band horns. It's a singularly insular curiosity of musical impressionism that's equal parts brooding and joyous, a definitive part of Axelrod's discography, and a well of sample material for tracks by Mobb Deep, Large Professor, The Black Eyed Peas, and Beanie Siegel, among others."

BAKER/SIMON GOFF/THOR HARRIS, AIDAN The Bit CD
The Bit is the second recorded collaboration between Aidan Baker (Nadja, Hypnodrone Ensemble), Simon Goff (Jóhann Johannsson, Hildur Gudnadottir), and Thor Harris (Swans, Shearwater, Thor & Friends). Following on from 2017's Noplace album (GZH 079LP), The Bit treads a similar path in terms of the recording process as the trio spent a day improvising at Voxton Studios in Berlin whilst on a European tour. The result was then edited and molded into six hypnotic tracks that ebb and flow with beauty and ease. The Bit finds the trio painting with a lighter touch than on its predecessor. Thor Harris's motorik beats still underpin the music but the atmospherics take a more prominent role and there is a pure and cohesive path to be found throughout the record. Much like on Noplace, Baker's guitar and Goff's violin weave together beautifully, forming a deep bed of melody, ambience, and reverb. Given the trios credentials it's not surprising they have created another immersive and stunning record.

SOMETIMES WITH OTHERS NOUS LP
A last drink on one of those lazy days in April. A slight heaviness lies in the room. An electric chamber orchestra plays melodies full of mysteries. Dark, dissonant music for nighthawks. A sad seriousness that hardly fits into this silly time that surrounds us so mercilessly. The musical influences merge into a "Sound Noir" carried by guitarist Mika Bajinski's timelessly glacier-melting voice. With cellist Marie-Claire Schlameus, double bassist Yoyo Röhm (Mick Harvey Band/Martin Dean) and Kristof Hahn (Swans/Pere Ubu) on lap steel guitar, Bajinski heads a band that can confidently point to a wealth of musical experience and should be considered the most interesting new band to come out of the Berlin swamp at the moment. NOUS, the debut LP (Grand Chess Records) by Sometimes With Others, is a mature mixture of classical instrumentation and experimental interludes with a love for effect that need not fear great comparisons. Sometimes With Others are more complex and at the same time more open than their taciturn colleagues Bohren & der Club of Gore and a comparison of Bajinski's sonorous voice with that of Nico is almost too obvious. Such comparisons, however, are quickly shattered by the uniquely dense sound, which will sweeten the sunrise for all creatures of the night. A soundtrack for all friends of the night, the loneliness in a hotel room, staring at the fridge and the daily waiting for the darkness.

PENELOPE'S FIANCE The Cutting Edge Of A Knife LP
Having previously released a slew of tapes on labels such as Clan Destine Records and Live Adult Entertainment, Penelope's Fiancé lands on Hypermedium for his vinyl debut. Hailing from Stavroupoli, Thessaloniki, Penelope's Fiancé has been keeping over the past few years a fast pace of work, constantly producing tracks and releasing new music, having shaped a unique sound that drifts across the borders of lo-fi, post-industrial, and fuzzy techno. The Cutting Edge Of A Knife is the culmination of all these previous excursions, a solid display of his ability to craft emotionally intense tracks, merging a ghostly, gloomy grandeur with squelching percussive patterns. Opener "Lethe" emerges from the haze with its cryptic atmosphere, molded in lethargic drones, scattered vocalisms, and sparse yet piercing beats and rhythmic build-ups. A panic-fueled, 160bpm rave-y epic, "Futile Endevours" brandishes an ecstatic, pummeling rhythm over recurring trance-flavored melodic phrases and unnerving vocal samples. "I Wasn't Always There" is a seductive, dark elegy, whose melancholic and lush synth melodies wash over chopping kicks and ice-cold hi-hats. "Anxiety" sounds like a slow techno roller, where frozen metallic percussion meets a cavernous bass, right before the off-kilter, cacophonous buzz of "The Lie Closest To The Truth". Closing track, "The Cutting Edge Of A Knife", is an intoxicated oriental-stepper, soaked in vaporous Middle-Eastern percussion and muezzin-like chants.

OVERTONE ENSEMBLE 2 CD
Tim Catlin formed the Overtone Ensemble in 2012 in order to perform works using his self-made "Vibrissa" instruments. The Vibrissa includes twelve vertically mounted aluminum rods that are longitudinally stroked with gloved hands to produce ethereal "singing" tones. The long sustaining nature of the rods sound and microtonal tunings allow players a sonic palette of complex textures and harmonic complexity. Expanding from the instrumentation on their first album, these new recordings utilize Vibrissa instruments, plus a range of extended techniques on old instruments including timpani, bowed piano, bowed glockenspiel, bowed guitar, as well as some new instruments, like doppler rods and whirled tubes. The majority of the recordings were done in the Old Chapel building in Melbourne, Australia. The chapel, formerly attached to the Old Melbourne Gaol boasts ten-meter-high ceilings which added an enveloping acoustic ambience. At times it felt as though the spectral presences of former inmates were hovering benevolently in the rafters watching on.

Limited restock. Due to overwhelming demand for Jazzman Records' five-LP boxset, here are the first ever official individual reissues of all five of the iconic Lansdowne recording sessions by the legendary UK jazz combo, the Don Rendell-Ian Carr Quintet. The five albums; 1965's Shades Of Blues (JMAN 107X-LP), 1966's Dusk Fire (JMAN 108X-LP), 1968's Phase III (JMAN 109X-LP), 1969's Change Is (JMAN 111X-LP), and 1969's Live, have reached almost mythical status in the collector's world. Regarded as holy grail artifacts for even the seasoned aficionado, the collective second-hand market value comes to an astonishing £6000. Jazzman Records located and acquired the original analog master tapes from the Universal vaults and created masters at Abbey Road Studios to produce audiophile quality 180 gram pressings replete with replica artwork -- shape, design, and even paper stock. Produced by the influential Denis Preston and recorded at his Lansdowne Studios in London, the band was primarily made up of saxophonist Don Rendell, trumpeter/composer Ian Carr, and pianist/composer Michael Garrick. This is UK jazz at its absolute finest and is a treasure not to be missed. Original replica flipback color sleeves; 180 gram vinyl, mastered from the original master tapes at Abbey Road Studios, London; poly-lined and printed individual inner sleeves; contains link to online PDF with printable liner notes.

FEHLMANN, THOMAS Gute Luft 2LP
2021 repress. Originally released in 2010 on Kompakt. Thomas Fehlmann remains as one of the most endearing and respected artists on Kompakt. He has inspired generations of fans and musicians over the course of his 30+ year career, from his early days as part of the legendary band Palais Schaumburg, and the pioneering Detroit/Berlin act 3mb (with Juan Atkins and Moritz Von Oswald), to his longstanding membership with The Orb, combined with his contributions as a solo artist to esteemed imprints R&S, Plug Research, and of course Kompakt. Gute Luft is the result of months of work scoring the hit German TV film 24h Berlin -- the longest documentary film in history which featured 80 camera teams following the lives of Berliners over a 24-hour period. Obviously, a huge challenge for Fehlmann, beyond the scope of the project and hours of music involved in a 24-hour film, there was dealing with the decision-making process that went with working with such a large production team. As he shared scoring duties with another musician (separately), inevitably a lot of his music ended up not making the final cut. Gute Luft is about re-tweaking and editing material from the countless hours of recording he had created. In a sense, Gute Luft is Fehlmann's ideal soundtrack to the 24h Berlin documentary. Fans shall rejoice as Thomas Fehlmann doesn't steer far from his signature path of trailblazing the finer links of classic Detroit house and techno with the submerged beauty of Berlin dub. One will immediately recognize the classic scoring techniques Fehlmann brings to Gute Luft -- various themes and sounds resonate in various forms and versions throughout the tracks. Fehlmann succeeds in synergizing the best of the past 20 years of Berlin's expansive history of electronic and dance music with Gute Luft. A recreational album in every way in which he hopes will make you "feel at peace with you and your environment, inspire you to lush, imaginative dinners, make babies, or just walk your own way with open eyes." Well put Thomas!

WEVAL The Weight 2LP
2021 repress; double LP version, includes download. Straight in the wake of their eponymous debut LP (KOMP 131CD/KOM 352LP, 2016), Weval return to Kompakt with their sophomore album, The Weight, breaking their pop-mellow, nostalgia-friendly style further out in the open as they arrive "at this place again were everything felt spontaneous, new and exciting, like we had in the beginning". Orbiting around that ever-luminous yet wistful melodic halo that surrounds their music, this second full-length effort sweeps an extra-wide and languidly woven palette of emotions and moods, making for a uniquely ambitious and generously colored mosaic of sound. If the recording sessions "often started grumpy and emotionless" by Harm and Merijn's own admission, the pair was "surprised by the joy it gave us, which can be compared to the emotions we felt back in the first days of making music together"; subsequently reconnecting with that fresh, naïve feeling of "absolute creative freedom" they were after. The album is also the fruit of a whole new working process for them -- more playful and unpredictable -- which saw them switch from "guitars lying around to piano, onto our own synths and the most cheap quirky toy synths you can imagine", and involved "recording all of our own samples, voice and almost every instrument out of the box. We've always wanted a narrative for the album, and finding the right order perhaps took the most effort." As a whole, The Weight breathes with that transformative richness, free of limits and rules. Amidst this collection of songs and instrumentals that live by Weval's singularly positive take on music -- one that can "lift you up, and make you feel hopeful without being necessarily straight out 'happy'" as they define it, the title-track and lead single stays true to the duo's dynamic approach, putting on a fine balance of floor and dream inducing adaptability that sound engineer David Wrench (Frank Ocean, The XX) subtly made palpable. There's heavy showers of funk drops pouring from endless bars of thunderstorm clouds and laid-back riffs beating a restrained poolside-party kind of pulse, but also sensual vocals rising from beneath the sheets and rueful polaroid-filtered ambiences to soundtrack all possible moments in life -- from the most euphoric to those when music seems the only viable healing potion. Weightless and airy, yet texturally dense and widely magnetic overall, The Weight is a synthesis of the duo's multi-angle take on electronics: blissed-out, heartening and infinitely free.

WHOMADEWHO Synchronicity 2LP
Double LP version. Kompakt welcomes back Copenhagen's WhoMadeWho. Tomas Barfod's penchant for electronic music poetically juxtaposed with Tomas Høffding and Jeppe Kjellberg's respective backgrounds in rock and jazz, gives their music an electrifying combination of sounds, merging a variety of influences to produce a unique sonic fingerprint that is emotive, irresistible and immensely satisfying. Though they have yet to strike a note together since the release of their 2012 full length Brighter (KOM 254LP/KOMP 097CD, 2012), WhoMadeWho have been remarkably productive. With two full-lengths, a DJ mix for Watergate's series (WG 026CD), the trio have found themselves diving more and more into the world of electronic music, tapping into their goldmine of connections within the scene to spearhead an array of collaborations. Synchronicity is all about "meaningful coincidences" -- bringing interpretation to bear on connections that have no actual causal relationship. It's a canny concept to pin onto Copenhagen trio WhoMadeWho's latest album, which sees them return to Kompakt for the first time since 2012's Brighter. On Synchronicity, WhoMadeWho call on friends old and new: Michael Mayer, Echonomist, Adana Twins, Alex Boman, Robag Wruhme, Frank Wiedemann, Sainte Vie, Mano Le Tough, Marc Piñol, Rebolledo, and Perel is the cast list; WhoMadeWho direct the material, shaping it into one lovingly flowing gem of dance-pop glory. There's something particularly generous about hearing an album as all-inclusive and open-hearted as Synchronicity in the midst of the profound social and cultural shifts everyone is currently experiencing. While some songs on Synchronicity were recorded together, in real time, such as the collaborations with Adana Twins and Rebolledo, most of them have taken place via long distance, thanks to the pandemic lockdown. But you don't need to know who was where to understand either the magnesium-flare melancholy of "Sooner", recorded with Piñol, which has you holding your breath with the gentle thrill of the song's lush melody, or the stomping strut of the following Adana Twins collaboration, "Shadow Of Doubt". Elsewhere, there's the stentorian robot voice at the heart of "Hamstring", where they're joined by Michael Mayer; the lustrous headsoak of "Twenty Tears", a tender intervention by Rebolledo; the strip-light, slow-motion disco strut of "Cecil", produced alongside Echonomist; or the glittering, arpeggio dreamwork that Perel helps sculpt into shape on "Der Abend Birgt Keine Ruh". From pop revelations to dancefloor delirium to slow-burning brooders, Synchronicity is a space for the joys of the unexpected to collide.

HILLAGE, STEVE Live At Rockpalast 1977 2CD
"It was the year 1975 when Steve Hillage decided to turn his back on the sometimes slightly quirky but very successful psychedelic space rock formation Gong, to say goodbye to his teacher Daevid Allen (who also left the band) and to take care of his own career from then on. At the time of leaving, Steve Hillage had already begun recording his solo debut Fish Rising with several Gong members (Miquette Giraudy, Mike Howlett, Tim Blake, Didier Malherbe, Pierre Moerlen), the album was released by Virgin Records and was a huge commercial success. In 1976 the album L followed, one year later Motivation Radio. Also solo, Hillage walked on familiar paths, spacy, psychedelic rock, which gave the gifted and also experimental guitarist plenty of room to develop musically. On March 20th 1977, Hillage gave a concert as part of the L tour at the Otto Hahn School in Bensberg (near Bergisch Gladbach), Germany, which was recorded by WDR and broadcast on German television with a slight time delay. Steve Hillage was on the road with a band that he had put together especially for the tour. Apart from his partner Miquette Giraudy, none of the musicians involved had worked on the studio albums. Jethro Tull's Clive Bunker sits on the drums, Camel bassist Colin Bass (nomen est omen) completes the rhythm section on bass, Phil Hodge and Basil Brooks (Gong, Zorch) support Miquette Giraudy on the keyboard instruments. The live band breathes new life into the Hillage classics from Fish Rising and L with plenty of pressure and drive, growling basses, fulminant virtuoso percussion and sensational Minimoog solos. 'Not Fade Away (Glid Forever)' at the end of the setlist gives a musical outlook on the album 'Motivation Radio', which was not to be released until September 1977. There is no better way to perform and experience space rock à la Steve Hillage live."

Featuring Mythos drummer Hans-Jürgen Pütz on percussion and effects, alongside synth/keyboard freak Alex Meyer, poet/vocalist Pauline Fund, and the mysterious guitarist Peter Förster. Cozmic Corridors is an album if tripped-out electronic ambient soundscapes, dark atmospheres, drones, plenty of MiniMoog, gothic Hammond organ, Rhodes, electric and 12-string acoustic guitars, ritual chants, effects, and horror cinematic vibes. MF DOOM Operation: Doomsday CD
"2021 restock. Underneath his mysterious metal mask, MF DOOM hides the cachet underground legends are made of. After KMD (his first group)'s 1994 sophomore album Bl_ck B_st_rds was shelved by Elektra in 1994 and his blood brother Subroc (one half of the sibling rap duo) passed away, surviving frontman Zev Love X mutated into the MC Avenger known as MF DOOM and the Rap world is better for it. This 19-cut deep album is ridiculously dope, in a bizarro Ol' Dirty Bastard kind of way. Doom sounds either high or drunk on most of the tracks, his self-produced beats are gritty, and his rhyme styles are almost indecipherable. On arguably the best track, 'Rhymes Like Dimes,' Doom weaves some pointed lyrics through his abstract wordplay, spitting 'only in America could you find a way to earn a healthy buck / And still keep your attitude on self-destruct. 'Who You Think I Am?' features DOOM's crew M.onster I.sland C.zars, while on '?' he trades hot verses with former Columbia artist Kurious Jorge. Doom's avant-garde ghetto-rhyme philosophies take even more intentionally weird twists on 'Tick, Tick...' where he and guest MC MF Grimm's flows warble over a rhythm track whose tempo speeds up and slows down continually. The comic-book themed skits, will help take you deep into the mind of an MC who is as otherworldly as they come. And in today's bland commercial Rap universe, Operation: Doomsday's left-of-center beats and rhymes are the perfect remedy."

LEILA Like Weather CD
When you make a record that doesn't conform, expect to divide opinion. Like Weather was released in 1998, on Rephlex -- run by Grant Wilson Claridge and Richard D James -- an often great label that had a following largely made up of Aphex-logo wearing fanboys who couldn't quite deal with electronic music made by a girl -- let alone one that used vocals. Everything those lads couldn't fathom about Like Weather is essentially what makes it untouchable; one of the greatest, most effortlessly esoteric pop albums ever made, not in the lineage of IDM or trip-hop, genres it has so often been awkwardly lumped in with, but something else that can't quite be categorized -- even 22 years later. Like Weather echoes the world-building energy of Prince's Sign "O" The Times (1987) -- every track is a self-contained universe all its own, there are no rules or conventions -- it's full of hooks, but also insular as fuck, the production is all over the place and it still sounds like nothing else (although if you're into the Mica Levi-produced Tirzah album (2018), know that this here is the aesthetic, spiritual blueprint). It feels analog, then digital -- it's R&B, but also baroque music box, drone pop, experimental, electronic, junglist -- attempting to define it is like trying to cup mercury in the palm of your hands; it'll just find something else to slide into. Newly remastered by Rashad Becker; cut by Lupo.

Textural layers of granular voices blended with gentle melodies and deep bass lines are the culmination of her innermost inspirations. Previously having shifted her creative outlet to work almost exclusively on visual art, stopping nearly all music composition, the return of her musical inspiration was influenced by meeting the love of her life, relocating across the Atlantic Ocean, experiencing new culture, and "finding home". 180 gram clear vinyl with full color cover print.

HECHT, DANIEL Guitar LP
"There are few instruments more uniquely suited to capturing the beauty and ennui of the rural American midwest than the acoustic steel-string guitar. In the hands of a master, the range of evocable emotion and experience is truly limitless. Daniel Hecht is one such master. His 1973 self-released debut album, simply titled Guitar, is an indispensable piece of the endless puzzle that is instrumental Guitar Soli music. Guitar was written and recorded while Hecht was living and working on a commune in Madison, Wisconsin. In between harvesting his own food and studying the music of Andrés Segovia and Mississippi John Hurt, Hecht found himself playing host to legendary itinerant street performer, Moondog. On Moondog's insistent urging, Daniel decided to record some of his recent guitar compositions. Released on his own Dragon's Egg imprint, Guitar fused Hecht's complex classical preoccupations with his country folk influences. The album eventually found a fan with guitar godhead, John Fahey, who eventually helped land Hecht on the eminent new age/instrumental label, Windham Hill. As Hecht's playing and composition grew in complexity, he found peership with labelmates like Michael Hedges, William Ackerman, and Alex DeGrassi. But it is his debut album that remains the greatest document of Hecht's talent and ambition in first bloom. A rolling, blissful trip through rural America, guided by the ambitious hand of a guitar master. Morning Trip is elated to release this gorgeous and seminal document of acoustic exploration on vinyl for the first time since its initial 1973 offering."

NOTWIST, THE Vertigo Days CD
On Vertigo Days, the first album in seven years for The Notwist, one of Germany's most iconic independent groups are alive to the possibilities of the moment. Their music has long been open-minded and exploratory, but from its engrossing structure, through its combination of melancholy pop, clangorous electronics, hypnotic krautrock, and driftwork ballads, to its international musical guests, Vertigo Days is both a new step for The Notwist. It's been seven years since The Notwist's last album, Close To The Glass (2014), and in that time the various members of the group have been busy with side projects (Spirit Fest, Hochzeitskapelle, Alien Ensemble, Joasihno), guest appearances, a record label (Alien Transistor), movie scoring, helping organize the Minna Miteru compilation of Japanese indie pop (MORR 168CD/LP), and running a festival (Alien Disko). Those divergent paths feed back into Vertigo Days in surprising ways, from its structure, built from group improvisations, with songs flowing and melting into one another in a collective haze, to its spirit, which feels refreshed and alive. There's something cinematic about Vertigo Days too, reflective of the group's time working on soundtracks. The album's lead single, "Ship", sees the group joined by Saya of Japanese pop duo Tenniscoats, her disarmingly hymnal voice sighing over a propulsive, krautrocking beat. American multi-instrumentalist Ben LaMar Gay sings on "Oh Sweet Fire", also contributing "a love lyric for these times". American jazz clarinetist and composer Angel Bat Dawid adds clarinet to the spaced-out dream-pop of "Into The Ice Age", while Argentinian electronica songwriter Juana Molina gifts some gorgeous singing and electronics to "Al Sur". Saya also reappears as a member of Japanese brass band Zayaendo, who guest on the album. Throughout, The Notwist also capture the openness of their live performances, too, where they mix and link their songs in unexpected ways. Vertigo Days sits together as one long, flowing suite, the album conceptualized as a whole entity. This is also captured by the album's lyrics, which Markus states, "feel more like one long poem." The dimensions of that poem are multi-faceted, something intensified by the geopolitical weirdness of its times. But it also works at a level of poetic abstraction, such that each song gestures in multiple directions -- the deeply private pans out to the global. Vertigo Days is an album that is brimming with life, with enthusiasm and love for music and for community, all wide-eyed and dreaming.

PARTCH, HARRY A Portrait LP
2021 restock. "Limited edition LP release (180g vinyl) + free download card. Selecting illustrative works from the lifetime of a creative person is a daunting task; doing so with a singularly individual artist like Harry Partch is all the more difficult. In the more than four decades since Partch's death, interest in his both his life and his compositional output has continued to grow, and there remains a place for documents that can offer insights, suggest paths, and give new life to that creator's endeavors. Even as duplicate instrumental ensembles are beginning to appear, and the original Partch instrumental resources have found a new home for performance and study, there is considerable value in returning to the many recordings he crafted over his lifetime of composition and performance. These are recordings that carry not only the stamp of the author, but his voice as well -- Partch himself appears in every single track of this record, either as singer, instrumentalist, or both. This remastered version of The Dreamer That Remains has never been available before and is making its first appearance in any format. The 12-page booklet includes an essay by the Harry Partch Foundation's Jon Szanto and numerous rare photographs provided by the foundation and other sources. An invaluable document for both Partch enthusiasts and neophytes! Limited to 700 copies."

VA Those Shocking, Shaking Days: Indonesian Hard, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock and Funk: 1970-1978 3LP
2021 repress! Deluxe 3LP version: packaged in a six-panel triple gatefold jacket with a 16-page full-color booklet. "The untold story of Indonesia's various underground 70s musical scenes; extensive liner notes, photographs and ephemera; fully restored and remastered audio; officially licensed. The progressive music scenes in 1970s Indonesia were largely underground as a result of strict censorship imposed by the dictator Suharto. Those who performed music marked by relentless fuzz, over the top, politically charged lyrics, strong rhythms and a cranky low-fidelity were truly rebellious. And the resulting output has been largely -- outside of the confines of this island nation -- unheard or ignored. Indonesia, based in large part on the restrictions imposed by Suharto, is better known for the coffee it exports than the music it creates. This situation hasn't been remedied by the rough-hewn Indonesian bootlegs that dotted the psychedelic landscape over the past five years. Thanks now to the tireless -- and expensive -- research of Canadian hip hop producer and Southeast Asian music specialist Jason 'Moss' Connoy - and the trust that Indonesian rock legend Benny Soebardja placed in Now-Again Records as he traversed his homeland's islands securing the rights necessary for us to offer you this anthology -- we feel like we can, in good spirits and conscience, shine the light on some of the most impressive organizations to offer their take on the psychedelic and progressive rock and funk sounds during the early shocking, shaking days of Suharto's regime." "The song that started it all for Rowland and Benavides was 'Mr. Yesterday', a future Chicano soul classic about a jilted lover who refuses to accept reality, opting instead to live in the memories of happier times. It was after Tom Brenneck heard the song that he contacted Gabe Roth and the due started working with Daptone Records. Here, we present the original, demo version of Los Yesterdays, 'Mr. Yesterday.' MACRAMES Unintentional Consequence Of Love/So In Love With You 7"
"The Macrames, with Benavides channeling his inner Al Green, invokes the early '70s soul sounds of Memphis and Philly. Songs such as 'Unintentional Consequences of Love' that tells the tale of a man who has unwittingly (and unwillingly) fallen in love and is living in denial. But as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so love is in the heart of the 'perceiver' and 'So In Love With You' exemplifies this opposite perspective of someone reveling in the thrills of a new love. Originally a part of Los Yesterdays early set lists, these two tracks featuring the legendary Ozomatli horns were shelved when the band solidified their unique '50s/'60s psychedelic soul sound, and so The Macrames were born."

TOLEDO, TRISH Coco LaLaLa/Do The Wrong Thing 7"
"On the heels of her Mango Hill records debut single, 'Thee Only One' ft. Joey Quiñones from East L.A.'s, Thee Sinseers, Trish Toledo, a devoted fan of soul music, has built her fan base serenading audiences with her sultry voice on soul classics, and earning herself a legion of devotees as a result. Teaming up with The Abuelitos, Trish delivers some of her smokiest vocals yet, with songs like 'Coco LaLaLa' & 'Do the Wrong Thing'. Understanding that Ms. Toledo is the undisputed queen of the newly coined 'Souldies' movement in L.A., the songwriting team decided they wanted to take her to the east coast via Miami for some more tropical sounding vibes. Hearkening back lyrically to such songs as The Supremes, 'I Hear a Symphony' or the Toys, 'Lovers Concerto', 'Coco LaLaLa' makes that familiar, romantic connection between love and music with some smoldering salsa piano thrown in to spice things up. On the other hand, there's 'Do the Wrong Thing', a slow-burner with temptation on the rocks. A married woman, a persistent man, and another round of drinks on the way. Will she 'Do the Wrong Thing'? You'll have to listen to find out."

Remastered sound; Insert with photos and liner notes by band member Ric Ballas; Includes download."... It's 1974, you're young and have a head full of Hawkwind and Roky and the Elevators, old brutalist blues in the Hound Dog Taylor/Fred McDowell backwoods whisky-fucked mode, freak folk and LSD; you're stuck in Hicksville, USA -- that's Youngstown, Ohio to you lot; the music scene sucks; glam's dead or dying slowly; punk a good year or so from even starting to get itself born. Town's too damn small to even muster up a band in. It's just and your buddy and that's it, man. So you grows your hair and wear satin, wander wide-eyed and tripping across small town railway tracks and hang loose at the weekend in your basement. You gather a bunch if cheapo instruments on the never-never and you start cutting low-fi bedroom demos... Stone Harbour were Ric Ballas (electric, acoustic and slide guitars; organ; piano; synthesizers; bass guitar, percussion, voice) and Dave McCarty (lead vocals, drums, and percussion), and out of nowhere and nothing, at entirely the wrong time, they cut an LP that will blow your head clean off. This is a trip into the true dark heart of psychedelia . . . Dave McCarty's vocals emerge from some subterranean cave and the keyboards flicker, flicker, flash across the periphery of the song; 'Rock & Roll Puzzle' is dark, twisted fried garage punk blues brutality in the same mold as 'White Faces' or 'Cold Night For Alligators', pre-empting The Gories and Pussy Galore by a good ten years!! . . . Songs fade in and out; finger-picking blurs into screaming squelching synths; guitars melt in the mid-summer heat. 'Grains Of Sand' frazzles like The Stooges through a fucked-up amp and filtered through a transistor radio with the valves burning out. 'Thanitos' is the freak-out ending of 'Julia's Dream' lost in suburban downtown US of A with the taillights cutting on the freeway... whilst 'Summer Magic Is Gone' is the most haunted, haunting song I've heard in many a long strange moon . . . Best record I've heard all year." --Hugh Dellar (Shindig!)

DIAMOND, HANNAH Reflections CD
PC Music's Hannah Diamond shares her highly anticipated debut album Reflections, a flawless collection of heartbreak pop ballads. Featuring singles "Invisible" and "Love Goes On," Reflections is a soul-bearing record that tells the world who Hannah Diamond truly is. Speaking about the album, Hannah says, "Making this body of work made me see how the energy you put out into the world is reflected back at you, and how every relationship you have has the potential to become a mirror. It's about how being in love can take you to another realm. But also how that realm can have two sides, just like a reflection. It can be really beautiful but it can also get really dark. You can get lost in that realm and left behind. Throughout the time I was working on my album and still, even now I've been trying to teach myself I'm enough as I am and to love myself a bit more." It's hard to believe that Reflections is Hannah Diamond's debut album, after her role in reshaping pop as part of PC Music. Reflections is home to some of the most touching songs about fractured relationships you'll hear on planet pop. It's Hannah Diamond through and through: soaring, skewed dance-pop production -- all songs produced by A. G. Cook -- paired with her frank approach to songwriting. That's the universal beauty of a Hannah Diamond song; you know exactly what she's singing about, and you've undoubtedly felt it too. Hannah Diamond is a singer, songwriter, photographer, and pioneering visual artist, described as "a new kind of popstar" by FACT Magazine. Her songs include "Attachment", "Every Night", "Fade Away", "Pink and Blue", and "Part of Me" with Danny L Harle, and she has regularly collaborated musically with PC Music founder A. G. Cook, as well as EASYFUN and Charli XCX; and visually with the likes of NIKE, Offset, Bladee, Olly Alexander (Years & Years), SOPHIE, and Charli XCX for her photography work. Four-panel digisleeve with gloss dispersion varnish printed on 300gsm cardboard and silver foil details. Includes five new bonus remixes and a digital download card. VA PLZ Make It Ruins - Locked Grooves LP
In partnership with Arts Council England, London-based record label PLZ Make It Ruins have announced a 40-track compilation of original loops from popular artists across the spectrum of contemporary music. Each track is exactly 1.8 seconds long and has been crafted with the intention of being looped repeatedly, creating a uniquely hypnotic rhythm. The compilation's net proceeds from the release as well as the project's merch package being split between ACLU and Liberty UK -- organizations that fight systemic inequality on both sides of the Atlantic. Among the list of contributors are Blood Orange, Arca, Clairo, 100 gecs, Kenny Beats, Dominic Fike, Four Tet, Floating Points, label head Vegyn, and many more. Artwork for the project comes from Isha Dipika and Travis Brothers. The phenomenon of locked grooves is something that has captured the attention of DJs and record collectors alike for decades; the final note on a record forming a coherent loop as the album comes to a close, creating its own abstract beat. This abstract beat is then used by DJs as a tool to seamlessly blend tracks after the song's final moments. This purpose is the genesis of the idea behind the project, allowing popular artists from all genres of music to give their own take on the formula with a host of different sounds and atmospheres. The project launched today with a one-off special on NTS, hosted by Vegyn, that explores the music of all the project's contributors, as well as including a mix created from all 40 loops on the project. Also features ARTHUR, Buddy Ross, Channel Tres, Daniel Aged, Dijon, Duval Timothy, Eris Drew, HAIM, John Glacier, Kelsey Lu, Kelvin Krash, King Krule, Lauren Alder, Loraine James, Matthew Tavares, Mica Levi, Mk.Gee, Mura Masa, object blue, Octo Octa, Oli XL, Otto, Overmono, Porches, Raveena, Romil Hemnani, Shygirl, Skrillex, tn_490, Yawning Portal, and Zsela.

EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN Alles In Allem LP
2021 restock; LP version. After more than 12 years, Einstürzende Neubauten's long-awaited new studio album Alles In Allem is finally going to be released. The album marks the quintessence of the band's output, opening yet another unexpected door in 40 years of ongoing sound research by a very experimental group of musicians around Blixa Bargeld. This band, like nearly no other, has managed to create a musical cosmos. It has, in fact, built up its own genre by uniquely combining edgy sound with sophisticated poetry. Appropriately, in the Year of the Rat -- the symbol of ingenuity and versatility according to the Chinese zodiac -- the band is not resting on the laurels of its last four decades. Instead, it curiously continues to explore everything that the sound universe has to yield, with one eye on the future and with boundless playfulness The unique sound and textual landscapes of the band, founded in 1980 in Berlin, reveal the timelessness that Blixa Bargeld, N. U. Unruh, Alexander Hacke, Jochen Arbeit, and Rudolph Moser have continuously maintained. And yet, through experimental approaches to songwriting, instruments developed over four decades and collective input, the band sounds remarkably cutting edge within its own time. In fact, through its individual brand of music the Einstürzende Neubauten seem to always command each and every manifestation of the here and now -- whether industrial in its early years, the driving beats of the 1990s or its more considered later work. The verse "Wir hatten tausend Ideen / Und alle waren gut" (We had a thousand ideas / And all of them were good) from album track "Am Landwehrkanal" could easily be perceived as the band's description of itself. The sum total is a special compilation: Alles In Allem, Einstürzende Neubauten's first regular studio album in 12 years, presents an incomparable band that defies categorization to create a genre all its own.

GERMS Cat's Clause LP
Limited restock. The Germs are one of the most legendary and venerated of all Los Angeles hardcore punk bands. The roots of the group stemmed from the meeting of two minds at an alternative school in the late 1970s, when future vocalist Jan Paul Beahm, AKA Darby Crash, met guitarist George Ruthenberg, AKA Pat Smear, the latter a reformed Jesus freak. Spearheading the west coast hardcore scene, the band burst into public consciousness with an explosive performance at The Whisky in 1977 (introduced by future Go Go Belinda Carlisle and KROQ disc jockey Rodney Bingenheimer), with Crash (then known as Bobby Pyn) and Smear joined by bassist Lorna Doom and drummer Donna Rhia, this line-up featuring on debut single, "Forming". Crash's rambling, sneering and often sarcastic vocals were the perfect foil to Smear's superfast thrash-guitar licks, and Smash was a dynamic frontman too, despite his volatile personality. After borrowing Weirdos drummer Nicky Beat for the "Lexicon Devil" single, debut album GI (1979), incongruously produced by Joan Jett of The Runaways, saw the introduction of Arizona-born drummer Nicky Bolles. The band's revered status and early innovation kept them on top of the LA punk scene heap, yet Crash ended up overdosing on heroin in December 1980, his death an apparent suicide. After releasing solo material in the late 1980s, in 1992 Smear was asked to replace John Frusciante in The Red Hot Chili Peppers but opted to join Nirvana instead, his presence there sparking the Germs revival that yielded the outtakes and live rarities set, Cats Clause, which includes rare live material from the Hong Kong Café, as well as material from Crash's final concert at the Starwood in 1980, and more rare material. Limited edition blue vinyl. Gatefold sleeve and printed inner sleeve with rare photos and other memorabilia. Also includes a 60x60cm poster..Licensed from San Juan Music.

SECOND LAYER World Of Rubber LP
Limited restock, last copies; RSD 2020 release. Post-punk duo Second Layer was formed in London in 1979 by southpaw guitarist/vocalist Adrian Borland and bassist/keyboardist Graham Bailey, who would both gain greater fame in the somewhat more mainstream act, The Sound. Borland has previously been active in Wimbledon punk trio The Outsiders, which released two albums and an EP on their own Raw Edge label before disbanding. Second Layer's heavily synthesized and dystopian "cold wave" sound first surfaced on a couple of EPs, issued on their own Tortch label, and when debut album World Of Rubber was released on Cherry Red in 1981, it was a very different beast indeed, being far more abstract, the minimal instrumentation masking occasional morbid lyrics about "Black Flowers", bodies in an open grave and, on "In Bits", the disintegrating personality of Borland's protagonist; "Japanese Headset" subjected an unknown foreign soundtrack to stereophonic effects. Since The Sound signed with major label WEA, shortly after, they released World Of Rubber; the album ended up being Second Layer's swansong, making it all the more sought after today. Includes three bonus tracks. Grey vinyl; Double-sided insert; edition of 500.

Kalabrese became friend and mentor and started supporting the young talent Kayyak. And when he came up with two funky song-sketches Kalabrese was thrilled and the collaboration started. The A-side "Make No Time" has a strong Afro-like guitar theme and a driven melodic bassline on top the famous rumpel-groove. A positive happy ride. On the B-side the duo gets deeper and create a fantastic late-night jam. The duo sings "Loose your fear and find your partner, make your way to relaxation" while the groove gets more and more hypnotic, Kalabrese sits on the drums and finds a way of relaxation without losing the focus on the steady beat.

VA Scotch Bonnet Presents Puffers Choice III LP
For over two decades, Glasgow's Mungo's Hi Fi and their label Scotch Bonnet have spread their fun, forward-thinking reggae music around the world. And this ethos is triple-distilled into their now eagerly-awaited Puffers Choice compilations. The album begins with "Heavenz" by Norwich-based producers Chief Rockas, featuring the hypnotic flow of Jamaican-born emcee Mr Williamz, over a smoking "re-lick" of the famous "Heavenless" rhythm. It's followed by the soulful voice of Ireland's Cian Finn, singing traditional Celtic song "Go Lassie" on a sparse, dubby Mungo's backing. This track was previously released on Mungo's offshoot imprint Dumbarton Rock which quickly sold out. The pastoral becomes the political as US-born, Wales-based crooner Jeb Loy Nichols gently reminds the world that "To Be Rich (Should Be A Crime)", produced by legendary dubbist Adrian Sherwood. Scotch Bonnet crew member Stalawa draws on the African excursions that yielded 2019's acclaimed Stalawa In East Africa EP. "Rather Be Alone", featuring Kenya's "First Lady of hip hop and reggae" Nazizi, is the next cut to Ease Up the Pressure by Jamaica's Delroy Melody and Uganda's C Wyne. Swedish production unit Viktorious revive "Hotstepper", a lost lyric from Jamaican veteran Earl Cunningham. It was an unreleased artifact from a 1980s sound system cassette that deserves a wider audience. The digital sounds that rose in the '80s continue with "Crucial" by Swiss producer Bony Fly and New York vocalist JonnyGo Figure --whose style reminded Mungo's of another NYC legend, Shinehead. Next is the first ever vinyl release of Interrupt's "Lyrics Spree", a family affair involving three generations of British lyricists Parly B, Daddy Freddy, and Tippa Irie with Interrupt. Also getting a first release on wax is hard-puffing, all Jamaican dancehall affair "BBS", featuring Shokryme and RTKal and produced by experimental Kingston collective, Equiknoxx. At the other end of the scale, musically and geographically, is "Weak Hearts", a haunting, mechanical soundscape from New Zealand dubstep project Flying Fox. Its sparing, sampled vocal contrasts with the loud and clear anti-racist lyricism of "Black", chanted by Jamaican sing-jay Skari over a deliberately unobtrusive backdrop from Belgium's INT DUB. Mungo's Hi Fi themselves make a reappearance on the flipside with hymn to solitude, "In My Zone", by Bristol emcee Gardna and singer Charli Brix. The album's final port of call is "Sailor West" by Cumbrian dubstep producer Somah and ethereal Edinburgh-based singer Nem.

REFORM Close Encounters 12"
Young Italian duo Reform return to Second State Audio with their latest release, four tracks of innovative, hard-hitting, and unusually sophisticated techno. The throbbing kick and trippy synths of "Close Encounters" opens the EP, with a foreign, clipped vocal and breaks-y jungle elements adding further interest and mystique. "Stance", meanwhile, is a straight-up stomper packed with ricocheting percussion, rubbery synth blasts, and disorienting pads, all crying to be heard in a club. "Mind Control" demands to rain down on a crowd at a festival, too. A lean, nimble build steadily escalates into an irresistible, shuffling beat boosted by shifting, bouncy synth patterns and an unrelenting forward momentum. The pair's unusual knack for blending disparate elements into something atypical but completely danceable is perhaps best demonstrated on "Horse Riding". The drums are tribal, the stabs are acid-like, there's a gauzy filter laid over the top, and tickling hi-hats, but also an undeniable thump commanding bodies to move. Put simply, this dream team from Tuscany are making music well beyond their years that stands up beside the work of veterans (and is often more interesting).

"Keid" builds slowly with rustling percussion, insistent tapping and a sneaky, smoldering bassline that bypasses the predictable massive drop for something moodier and more subtle. "Echoes From Epsilon" is probably the most unexpected track of the lot. Five and a half minutes of ambience is characterized by airy pads, windchime synths, and a transportive, meditative air that is light years away from Pan-Pot's typical fare. At once timeless and completely of the moment, Keid is a surprising, refreshing release from the industry veterans that should both please old fans and win new ones.

JOYHAUSER Think People 12"
Belgian duo Joyhauser are perfectionists, and it shows. Their releases aren't sent out into the universe until they're just right, and the Think People EP is a fulsome explosion of powerhouse techno, crafted with meticulous care. The title track is a barnstormer loaded with everything you need to ignite a warehouse: pumping kicks, synth blasts mimicking smoke machines, and huge bass-y blurts that cut through the mix like an oncoming train. "Molly" doesn't let up where that let off. Rattling percussion and haunting synths are the precursor to a cheeky voiceover that confirms exactly which "molly" they're talking about. Lashes of acid heighten the energy, creating a trance-like state that endures for the duration. Michael Klein's remix of "Think People", meanwhile, bears the German producer's trademark energy. Rave-y synths peal over the top of a delicious thump, snatched vox and an incessant shuffling beat, trading the bite of the original for something slightly less dark. BERTOIA, HARRY Glowing Sounds LP
Harry Bertoia's Glowing Sounds LP contains three versions of the same composition, each transferred at different tape speeds in accordance with the artist's instructions. This is the third LP to be released from Bertoia's extensive tape archive and it's the first, of many, to be released using instructions left behind by the artist himself. Bertoia wrote the concept for this Glowing Sounds LP on a note in 1975 and slipped it into the master tape case where it sat unread for 45 years. The idea was simple, transfer the original recording at its original speed and two slower speeds. Bertoia noticed that the results, however, were profound. Recorded on January 20, 1975 using two large gongs, Glowing Sounds is one of the most powerfully minimal recordings yet discovered in Bertoia's collection. The artist's note left with the tape indicated that it was recorded at a speed of 15 IPS (inches per second) but slowing it down to speeds of 7.5 IPS and 3.25 IPS were quite effective for enhanced playback. Side A features the original 15 IPS recording and the 50% slower 7.5 IPS recording. Side B features a 20-minute, ultra-slow version at 3.25 IPS. Long, deep drones and powerful overtones define the sound of this recording. Comparison of the three speeds provides a revealing magnification of Bertoia's gongs, overtones and the artist's inventive approach to performance, composition and recording.

EYELESS IN GAZA Caught In Flux 2LP
Spittle Records present a reissue of Eyeless In Gaza's Caught In Flux, originally released in 1981. Inspired by a weird mixture between Aldous Huxley's visionary work and some biblical myths, Eyeless In Gaza, (formed in 1980) are one of the most original and creative bands emerging from the early '80s British post-punk scene. An intimate duo line-up featuring Martyn Bates (vocals, guitar, organ) and Peter Becker (drums, bass, synth). Caught In Flux originally released in 1981 on Cherry Red and reissued here in its original format LP+12" is their second album. The result of a one-take studio session with no overdubs. A perfectly balanced combination of various elements arising from post-punk, art rock, ambient music, and psychedelia. This was an important step towards a form of music where all these influences were organically integrated into a highly purified sound experience.

YAS-KAZ Virgo Indigo LP
Studio Mule open the roster towards sophisticated spiritual sounds on the crossroads of electrified jazz, oriental fourth-world spheres and deeply composed experimental sounds. This time, the label welcomes Japanese artist Ya-Sukazu Sato, aka Yas-Kaz, a university-trained percussionist, that gained global success as a composer for the internationally known Butoh dance troupe Sankai Juku which has toured the world since 1975. His infrequent musical amalgamation of ancient Eastern genres, airy soundscapes, and ritualistic dance percussions perfectly accompanied the modern dance movements of an avant-garde dance group that is known for slow, mesmerizing dance passages, whose repetitive body movements sometimes focusing only on the feet or fingers. Besides his theater work, Yas-Kaz composed scores for Japanese movies, performed live along stars like US-American jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter or legendary Japanese new-age musical group Himekami, and recorded a number of collaborative and solo albums. Studio Mule reissues his third solo album, Virgo Indigo, originally published on the Japanese label canyon in 1986. The album opens with "Djidanda", a composition whose melodic drive and percussive groove is reminiscent of Moondog's spirit. Melancholic strings, loose guitar riffs, spiritual cowbells and wild, yet mild rhythms form a repetitive maelstrom that is made for all sorts of acrobatic body movements. Its followed by the album's title track "Virgo Indigo", a spiritual jazz leaning arrangement featuring Wayne Shorter on the soprano saxophone, delivering a crystal-clear performance above tribal rhythms and traces of Gamelan. The story-arc of the ten-minute long composition also brings minimalistic percussive moments, oriental ambient zones, and some electronic drones. "Kara-Kira ~Windscape III~" is an airy spiritual illusion that melds joyful flute notes with gentle chime melodies. "WADJI" starts with an industrial feel, just to break down into a manic, again Moondog-ish, atmosphere full of darkish sounds and nebulous ambient music. Yas-Kaz enters the oriental zones with "Notarinotari", seducing with a jazz-laden romantic soundtrack mood. The final tune, "Jasmin", is yet another surprise, a percussive-driven neon cocktail bar pop that features a humming female voice and mesmerizing synth and guitar melodies. Six tracks that introduce six different locations of Yas-Kaz's ramified artistic work, combining sweetish melodies, dynamic percussions, statuesque minimalism, and world music traditions in spacious compositions.

MAGIC Magic LP
Survival Research present a reissue of Magic's self-titled release, originally released in 1971. Spanning the divide between backwoods swamp rock and US psychedelia, Magic evolved from Lansing, Michigan-based band, Next Exit, which singer-songwriter Duane King and his bassist brother Nick joined in 1968. The following year the group became Magic and things stepped up a gear with the introduction of lead guitarist Joey Murcia, a Miami native that was a session player for TK Records. The band moved to Miami and became the first white act on TK, their debut album released on their own Armadillo label. Returning to Michigan in 1970, Motown producer Scott Regan brought them onto the Rare Earth subsidiary for this excellent self-titled LP, with none other than Stevie Wonder playing piano on three tracks.

COLE, LLOYD Lloyd Cole In New York 7LP BOX
Lloyd Cole In New York, released on CD in 2017, will now be available as an exclusive limited edition seven-LP box set via Tapete Records. It features all four solo albums Lloyd Cole released between 1988 and 1996: Lloyd Cole (1990), Don't Get Weird On Me Babe (1991), Bad Vibes (1993), and Love Story (1995), plus Smile If You Want To, the "unreleased" fifth album (including one previously unreleased track), and Demos '89-'94, 20 recordings from home and studio made public for this release. The box will also feature a 24-page LP booklet about this most erudite of artists by John O'Connell with new interviews with Lloyd and featured musicians, producers, and collaborators and a wonderful selection of photos from the period plus a poster and postcards that feature Lloyd shot in New York by feted photographer Kevin Cummins.Lloyd Cole first stepped into the spotlight when Lloyd Cole & The Commotions released their effortlessly hip debut album Rattlesnakes in 1984. He went on to make two further albums of cerebral pop with the Commotions. In '88, Lloyd decamped to New York a solo artist and made a home in the city that had always loomed large in his imagination and he fully embraced its bars, bohemia and beautiful losers. Lloyd Cole In New York charts this fascinating phase in Lloyd's development, which saw him experimenting with his sound and collaborating with some top-notch US musicians including guitarist Robert Quine (Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Lou Reed, Brian Eno), drummer Fred Maher (Material, Scritti Politti, Lou Reed), and Matthew "Girlfriend" Sweet. On his first solo album, Lloyd Cole, Lloyd embraced an edgier writing style with a nod to Dylan, Lou Reed and, not abandoning his UK roots completely, Marc Bolan. Don't Get Weird On Me Babe was Lloyd's concept album -- one side orchestral (a la Jimmy Webb), the other rock. Lloyd described it as his "farewell to rock". Bad Vibes, 1993's about turn into bold psych-baroque experimentalism, polarized fans and critics alike. Love Story, a favorite of fans, restored his critical and commercial reputation. Smile If You Want To was supposed to be Cole's fifth solo album. It was completed, but record company politics meant it was never released. The two LPs Demos '89-'94 offer an insight into the development of Lloyd's sound over this time, from early tentative recordings as a solo artist finding his way in his adopted home town, to demos he recorded for Love Story where he embraced a more pastoral folk sound. They also include Lloyd's previously unheard version of "The Ship Song" by Nick Cave.

SHAPE Beyond Reflection Cassette
Shapes is the solo project by Niklas Dommaschk, one half of Phantom Horse. As one half of Phantom Horse, his long-serving electronic duo with Ulf Schütte, Dommaschk co-produces beautifully muted, kraut-inspired jams that seem to soundtrack fictitious TV ads for wondrous imaginary household appliances, e.g. a calmly efficient, if slightly unsettling kitchen robot with an integrated lava lamp feature. In contrast, Shapes cuts tracks down to size -- nothing here is longer than five-and-a-half minutes. Also, Dommaschk has turned up the treble, the prominence of the higher frequency spectrum adding bite and menace to these deceptively simple synth polyrhythms. Whereas opening track "Benzin" (German for "Petrol") manages to conjure the paradoxical image of something or someone meandering with urgency, "Einzeller" (German for "single-celled organism") channels a John Carpenter-style pulse, complete with horror sound effects. "Interference" is a truly effective representation of the term, with piercing, but quiet tinnitus frequencies set above a beat as sparse as it is crunchy. "Two Stones", by contrast, offers a kind of robotic wistfulness whereas closing piece "Energies Of The Mind" fizzes out like a jumble of toy keyboards attempting to score a science program -- and failing, but instead revealing some much grander emotional truth. This is the sound of breaking some kind of inner lockdown, of turning inwards and then projecting parts of murky inner shadows outward, as well-defined and sometimes lurid shapes, individually clear, but still in the process of becoming organized into a complete whole. The unfinished is what is most exciting. May the shapes never find their slot in the jigsaw puzzle. All songs by Niklas Dommaschk. Recorded between 2017 and 2020 in Berlin and Nijmegen. Mastering by Edgar Medina. Artwork by Daniel Castrejón. Includes download code; edition of 100.

PHANTOM HORSE Mehr Null LP
Mehr Null translates to "More Zero". The title of Phantom Horse's third record for Umor Rex could either be seen as a request (to the listener? to the sound engineer?) to expect or to do or to imagine less; or just as the description of a state. The Hamburg/Nijmegen based duo of Ulf Schuette and Niklas Dommaschk is indeed moving nearer to zero: the arrangements are less illuminated; there's a significant nod to JD Emmanuel's working-class vision of minimalism. Hitherto walking in the kraut tradition (but moving away more and more), Phantom Horse heads toward the synth swamps where the old-fashioned shamanic disco is not yet abandoned. From the light green melancholy of "Owl" to the unexpected playfulness of the title track, the duo has obviously worked hard on leaving things out. Still, there's light-footed magic like in "Common Magic", the background music for a comet rain coming into your world. You can find hints to the lower-key film scores by Tangerine Dream, but Phantom Horse's approach fits more into a factory building where sad robots are working their night shifts on a sea horse machine. It's the perfect soundtrack to the non-hungover day after. Pink, transparent vinyl; includes download code; edition of 300.

WINTER, ELI The Time To Come LP
The Time To Come is the first release from Worried Songs and the striking debut from twenty-one-year-old Chicago resident Eli Winter, noted as one of the Guardian's "artists to watch in 2020". These masterfully composed instrumental pieces for six-string, twelve-string, and electric solo guitar showcase the raw talent of this young guitar powerhouse. In The Time To Come, Winter remembers the dead, considers the dynamic nature of memory, and attempts to chronicle the nearly inexpressible difficulty of processing loss. Winter began recording sessions in Houston immediately after Hurricane Harvey, and this album's turbulent emotional landscape is in some ways a response to the devastation of the storm. The record revolves around its title track, a meditation on the passing of a close friend. In the days after her death, Winter wrote a long piece for guitar in which every part would feel essential. "I wanted to conjure her through the music," Winter says. "This song is the closest thing I have to a memory of her." He calls it aspirational: "How can you maintain hope in the face of grief?" The Time To Come is rich, warm and evocative, marking an ambitious debut from a young guitarist. Originally released on a tiny-run of now long-gone cassette tapes, The Time To Come finally sees the light of day on vinyl, housed in the bucolic American folk art of Albert Gray. "His debut album is really sublime." --Laura Snapes, The Guardian "Eli Winter is one of the brightest new lights in the world of guitar music today." --Record Crates United "Eli Winter's The Time To Come is a remarkably assured debut ... Every moment is earned, every note rings out with warmth and wonder. Beautiful stuff." --Tyler Wilcox, Aquarium Drunkard

ALLRED, JOSEPH The True Light LP
Joseph Allred, or occasionally known as his alter-perspective, Blind Faulkner, is a Tennessee-born multi-instrumentalist, now residing in Massachusetts, who has received critical acclaim for his seemingly endless slew of wonderful records, most of which showcase his talent for all things stringed. Here, Worried Songs presents the initially private-pressed masterwork, The True Light, taking its name from the Gospel of John, a haunting lament for solo-harp guitar. Recorded shortly after receiving the instrument, The True Light documents his exploration of the harp guitar. The five songs found on The True Light bleed like a river, flowing from one to the next in waves of immense beauty, melancholia and yearning, reflecting on spirituality and belonging in its many forms. Strong Basho vibes on this one, yet, as always, Joseph expands and transcends on the ghosts of primitive-past, forging his own path. In short, this is the real deal. "If you don't know Allred already, you will soon." --Byron Coley "Each time I've seen Joseph Allred play a concert, I've choked up. Whether working in improvisation or composition, for harmonium, stringed instruments or voice, their music reveals a deep knowledge of diverse musical idioms secular and religious, with the sort of quiet force that comes from the acquisition of this knowledge, and their performances are striking and brave, simultaneously unadorned and rich as to suggest collaborations with realms beyond our own. The True Light retains these qualities: like Basho or Rose, it's uncompromising; like sacred musics, stately; like the music of so many American masters, it plows ahead on its terms and gives and gives." --Eli Winter "... fierce, raw and deeply moving." --Pop Matters "... standing on the shoulders of American folk music traditions, he generates a tension not far removed from the melodramas of the German new wave director. Folk music, not for the coffee shop singalong, but for a lonesome trek through a wilderness increasingly invaded by a brutal modern world." --Spectrum Culture

ROLIN, MATTHEW J. Matthew J. Rolin LP
Worried Songs's third release is the debut solo LP from Matthew J Rolin. Originally released on the inimitable Feeding Tube records in 2019 and very quickly out-of-print, this pressing for UK and Europe will continue to showcase Matthew as one of the most creative, versatile, and powerful proponents honing their craft in the canon of the American primitive (and beyond) today. Cutting his chops in a haze of punk, noise, and psychedelic projects and bands in and out of Illinois and Ohio, that misspent youth can still be heard in these nine achingly beautiful compositions of solo concert steel string guitar. This is true outsider music, easily transcending the tired list of American-primitive masters -- it is ragged and rustic, tired and angry, beautiful and hopeful music for these often-hopeless times. Very few copies of this LP made it to Europe last time so quit goofing around. New LPs from this Ohio powerhouse (alongside the recently released and totally incredible duo record with Jen Powers on dulcimer) are incoming so get swatting up and quick. "While the rainy spirit and homespun quality of Rolin's music separates him from more academic fingerstyle contemporaries, he can't quite be classified with other unplugged noise dudes, either. There are echoes of Bill Orcutt's shattered blues in the dizzy rumble of 'Rivets' and a stripped-down reading of Ryley Walker's freefalling astral pop on 'Neverendingness,' but Rolin's songs never ramp up or even attempt to launch. Instead, they trudge steadily forward. A soft argument between hope and defeat runs through the album, and Rolin presents it with the calm resolve of someone who's probably sat alone with an acoustic guitar as the first of five acts at a basement gig. Unconcerned with virtuosic technique or reincarnating the ghosts of past guitar heroes, Rolin's overcast instrumentals convey the reality of his own encounters with folk blues." --Fred Thomas, Pitchfork "Rolin's talents as a solo player are immediately clear from the first note he plays. If you get a chance to see him don't pass it up. Nor should you pass up this chance to score his first long player while it's hot off the presses." --Byron Coley
