WINEHOUSE, AMY The Ska & Reggae Collection LP
"Amy Winehouse had many talents even beyond the jazz sounds she was so famous for. The troubled soul had a live magnetism like few others and tapped into the greats while adding her own smoky style to whatever she sang. Next to her well-known albums such as Back to Black, she also took part in several recording sessions in which she covered some of her favorite ska and reggae tracks. Now a selection of them have been put together for this new album The Ska & Reggae Collection: Studio on 2Tone. The likes of Alton Ellis and Jools Holland feature and help make this a great reminder of what a talent she was."

VAINIO & VIGROUX Peau Froide, Leger Soleil CD
In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Aesthetical Records reissues Peau Froide, L?ger Soleil, the groundbreaking collaboration between Finnish electronic music luminary Mika Vainio and French experimental music pioneer Franck Vigroux. Originally released in 2015, this new edition revives a work of unparalleled sonic intensity and textural exploration. This iconic album is the result of a three-year recording process that began after Vainio and Vigroux's first live performance in Paris in 2012. Their collaboration serves as an intricate balance of minimalist meditations and maximalist energy, pushing electronic music into radical new directions. Peau Froide, L?ger Soleil is a journey through psychic resonance and spatial abstraction, constructed through Vainio's intense, brutalist grooves and Vigroux's explorations in tonal extremities. Spanning a total of nine tracks, the album unfolds like an odyssey, densely layered yet free from structural limitations, traversing vast emotional landscapes where each sound feels at once intimate and tectonic. Beginning with the ominous, bass-heavy textures of "Deux," Vainio and Vigroux establish a dynamic atmosphere, setting the stage for the intense soundscapes to follow. "M?moire" introduces ghostly voices that weave through thick waves of sub-bass and distorted noise, while "Souffles" explores uncharted sonic territories with its microtonal landscapes and spectral ambiance. Vigroux's mastery over spatial abstraction comes to life in "Le Souterrain," adding an atmospheric weight reminiscent of Ennio Morricone's stark loneliness or Neil Young's Dead Man soundtrack. In contrast, tracks like "Parabole" and "Le cr?ne tambour" unleash fierce, maximalist grooves, making them some of the most aggressive and memorable moments in Vainio's discography. Peau Froide, L?ger Soleil represents a landmark in its sonic identity, embodying a vision of uncompromising, avant-garde sound design. This anniversary reissue on Aesthetical honors that legacy while inviting new listeners into Vainio and Vigroux's collaborative universe -- a space where electronic music becomes both weapon and sanctuary.

SORCERERS, THE Other Worlds and Habitats LP
LP version. The Sorcerers' latest long player lands in perfect time for the summer, offering a further progression into their unique take on Ethio-inspired jazz. Other Worlds and Habitats is, of course, released on ATA Records and is blessed with the analogue recording and painstakingly loving production listeners have come to expect from this boutique studio. This, The Sorcerers eagerly anticipated fourth LP, follows on from the success of I Too Am A Stranger. Never ones to stop moving forward, and ever vigilant to avoid the realm of pastiche, The Sorcerers see the Ethiopique sound as a building block for their natural progression as a group, but a block that sits at the base of a much larger, ever expanding, structure, The addition of keyboardist Johnny Richards, whose use of the Jen 73 piano, Mellotron and Farfisa Compact Duo, alongside the core members of the group, has opened some exciting doors for The Sorcerers, fusing the future looking optimism of the late '60s and '70s (when artists began to experiment with the new electronic technology and synthesizers becoming more readily available) and more traditional sounds. Taking inspiration from Ethiopian keyboardist Hailu Mergia and Nigerian musician William Onyeabor, Other Worlds and Habitats, as the name suggests, showcases The Sorcerers' shift to a new, and deeply exciting, musical landscape. A Danish tour, unbelievably the first live outing for The Sorcerers, created another patina to the band. A weary time on the road, shared by the core Sorcerers trio of bassist Neil Innes, drummer Joost Hendrickx (Gotts Street Park, Kefaya, Eddie Chacon) and reed/flute/vibes player Richard Ormrod, alongside new/old member Richards led, to an organic, less cerebral sound than listeners have heard before. The Sorcerers' Other Worlds and Habitats is a natural progression in the world they have created for themselves. Richer for shared experiences, and accepting the rise of the machines, they prove that while their journey is always going forward, there are many different paths to take.

DRONES, THE Havilah 2LP
Havilah from The Drones is finally on vinyl since its first edition in 2008 on ATP. A great gem of swampy garage blues, largely unknown to the public, now rescued to take its rightful place. One of the last albums from this great band, which a few years later would give birth to the brilliant Tropical Fuck Storm, led by Fiona and Gareth. Bang! Records now presents the double vinyl reissue of Havilah, the fourth studio album by The Drones, originally released in 2008. A cult classic in Australian alternative rock, now returning in a limited analog edition, perfect for experiencing the raw intensity and unique energy of this essential band. An album born from isolation and introspection. Recorded in a remote sub-alpine forest cabin in Victoria, Australia, Havilah was created in total seclusion from the outside world. Without conventional electricity -- only diesel generators and sheer determination -- The Drones crafted an album deeply connected to the rugged landscape surrounding them. That untamed energy seeps into every note, giving the record an unfiltered, visceral quality that few albums can match. In Havilah, the band, led by Gareth Liddiard, expands its sonic scope, blending punk blues, noise rock, dark folk, and garage rock with raw emotional intensity. Liddiard's exceptional lyrical craft shines throughout the album, exploring mystery, doom, and existential struggles in songs that weave between allegory and stark reality. A must-have vinyl reissue. Celebrated both in Australia and internationally, Havilah was nominated for the 2008 J Award for Album of the Year and later recognized in 2011 as one of the 100 greatest Australian albums of all time.

SUBURBAN NIGHTMARE, THE A Hard Day's Nightmare LP
Before they were The Dwarves, these Highland Park misfits tore through the '80s as Suburban Nightmare, unleashing A Hard Day's Nightmare -- a raw garage-punk blast now reissued on vinyl (only 500 copies!). Their chaos began with fuzzed-out riffs, snotty vocals, and a high school expulsion for staging a nude art stunt. Soon after, they became The Dwarves, moved to San Francisco, and never looked back. Raw, wild, and real -- grab this limited reissue before it's gone! The band's infamy kicked off in 1983, when they were expelled from high school for hiring teen art models to pose nude with bowls of fruit on their heads during a pep rally. A year later, Suburban Nightmare was born, and the notorious Skull and Boners logo -- courtesy of underground artist Jon Straus -- sealed the deal. A Hard Day's Nightmare is more than just a teenage punk artifact -- it's the unfiltered blueprint of a band about to go off the rails and onto cult status.

SOUND OF MONEY, THE Two: Rhyme On LP
LP version. Back in 2017 The Sound Of Money, a band from the Munich pop underground, took the titles of their 12 favorite '60s albums as the DNA -- and gave the letters a good shake! Out came a batch of 12 new titles, for new songs. They wrote those songs, recorded them, and gathered them on the album More? Why Not! -- an anagrammatical exorcism of the '60s. Now, they have made a follow up, just with their favorite '70s albums, and what to say, it's topping the fun. A celebration of the album as a format, pop history and exchange. Here it is Two: Rhyme On - An Anagrammatical Exorcism Of The '70s. The band's list of favorite albums from that time ranges from Bowie to Chic, from Nico to Slits, from Bob Marley to Kraftwerk. And those Anagrams? Here's an example "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" became "Dr. Dr. Themefart, Frustrating Himself, Posed as Gay Old Nazi SS." And the music, how does this sound? Just like the letters of the titles, the music and lyrics have been shaken up into a dazzling, grotesque kaleidoscope of classic '70s pop styles: agricultural p-funk, casino gospel disco, anti-pogo postpunk, home computer dub jazz, or the entire Bowie in three and a half minutes backwards.

MERIDIAN BROTHERS VI 2LP
2LP Silk Screen Sleeve plus insert. Before Guaracha UFO propelled Meridian Brothers onto the international stage, Eblis ?lvarez was already shaping his singular sonic universe in the shadows. Released only on CD in between 2009 and 2012 via local label La Distritof?nica, Meridian Brothers VI and VII never had wide distribution or media exposure. Yet, these albums represent a crucial phase in the band's evolution, capturing the energy of Bogot?'s experimental cumbia scene at the time. On VI, ?lvarez crafts a hallucinatory patchwork of cumbia and vallenato, using his guitar as the guiding thread before layering other instruments on top. These two albums laid the foundation for the radical fusion and irreverent spirit that would later define Meridian Brothers. Now reissued on vinyl for the first time, these historic recordings offer a raw and fascinating glimpse into the origins of one of Latin America's most forward-thinking musical projects.

BLANCO TETA La Debacle de las Divas LP
The Argentinian punk-noise-queer combo Blanco Tet ais back with a new album from the underground scene of Buenos Aires. La Debacle De Las Divas is a raw, satiric and emotional album about capitalism's obsession with youth, and the burnout of always having to keep yourself "new." It dives into the sounds of pop and rock, noise, no wave and even metal and grunge, and it?s a record for the working-class divas, the Flixbus divas -- too broke, too tired, too late, but still loud. Recorded live in one room, no overdubs, no edits -- just the urgent chaos of cables, bodies and feedback. It's danceable, glitchy, and full of heartache and rage. Fuck meritocracy. Fuck techno-feudalism. This is survival music for the ones paying subscriptions to platforms that censor them. La Debacle De Las Divas is a shelter and also a call to arms for outdated divas.

CLUSTER Cluster II CD
Cluster can be counted among the most important international protagonists of the electronic avant-garde. Some credit them with having invented ambient music, others as pioneers of synthesizer pop, whilst to some they are firmly embedded in the krautrock universe. There is some truth in all of these notions. Cluster (or Kluster as they were in the beginning) were founded in 1970 in Berlin by Conrad Schnitzler, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, and Dieter Moebius. A change in direction and musical differences moved Moebius and Roedelius to split from Schnitzler after which the duo recorded ten regular studio albums between 1971 and 2009. Their debut album (Cluster 71) was in Wire Magazine's "One Hundred Records That Set The World On Fire" list. Cluster II is influenced by Berlin and Hamburg; situated somewhere in the middle of artistic happenings, musical outrageousness and drug abuse: an urban mixture."The question as to whether Cluster II has to be considered part of serious music or rather of popular music seems as obsolete today as it was back in 1972. Interestingly enough, however, the album was among the first ones to leave people in confusion when trying to tell what musical category it belonged to. As opposed to now where there is a large transitional area situated somewhere in between the two poles and made up by all sorts of electro-acoustic music, serious and popular music were still categories strictly set apart at the beginning of the seventies. Moebius and Roedelius, however, simply did not care about categorizing their music, thus contributing to the trend towards abandoning the categories altogether. When listening to Cluster II today, fifty years after it was recorded, the album's historic significance becomes as clear as never before. A lot has already been written about Cluster's historic impact. Let me just underline in this context that it was not least this album that opened up doors through which generations of electro-acoustic musicians were yet to step." --Asmus Tietchens

SILBERSTREIF Ich suche dein Gesicht CD
After more than 40 years, Silberstreif's EP Ich suche dein Gesicht, first released on Sky Records in 1983, is available again. Rather unusual for Sky's catalogue, the duo played flawless synth-pop with German-language lyrics. This EP sank into obscurity in the 1980s flood of hyper-commercial German New Wave releases. The band later became an insider tip and the EP a sought-after collector's item. The re-issue is accompanied by four previously unreleased bonus tracks."Overdue, a re-issue of this great, rare EP from 1983. While that year, the major labels were finally exploiting everything commercially that even rudimentarily fitted the NDW (Neue Deutsche Welle -- German New Wave) buzzword, we can now look back and realize that there were still countless creative bands, projects and artists in the musical underground. The release by Silberstreif shows like no other that the focus of the German 1980s underground was not only on odd and experimental sounds, but also on poppy and melodic ones. Listening to these hopeful, almost innocent synth melodies paired with dark lyrics circling around obsessive male protagonists, one can't help but imagine how this band re-asserted its artistic freedom by leaning into the musical tropes of sell-out and commercialization -- with a subtle subversive middle finger. The duo play fantastic and timeless synth-pop which is still relevant today and still gets crowds dancing in trendy clubs between songs by Human League and Grauzone. Like I said, this re-issue is long overdue!" --Marco Floess

NEUZEITLICHE BODENBELAGE Neue Kreise CD
Genre-resistant Berlin duo Neuzeitliche Bodenbel?ge return to Bureau B with Neue Kreise, a sharp sophomore LP that shakes a cocktail of musical influences into an irresistible blend of smooth, synthetic pop. If their 2020 debut Der Gro?e Preis saw the N(ewer)DW angst of their early releases give way to bubbling boogie and kosmische funk, this 11-track outing dives headfirst into the deep blues and sunset hues of yacht rock and groove-laden jazz fusion, all while retaining their signature lyrical bite. Finding its final form in nocturnal sessions in fall and winter 2024 -- with off-seasons spent, as always, experimenting in a secluded hotel at Lake Constance -- Neue Kreise ("New Circles") sees Niklas Wandt and Joshua Gottmanns tracing fault lines from childhood torment to contemporary crisis, ultimately offering a cautious hope for healing. Themes of male bonding and bullying, suburban claustrophobia, and family tension manifest in tracks like "Bittere Gifte" and "Jahr Um Jahr," as the duo exorcise their demons over infectious electro-funk and space-age samba respectively. Sonically, this diverse disc showcases a broad spectrum of musical influences, drawing from the obscure German/Austrian records curated by their ever-present producer Ali Europa, alongside John Martyn's late '70s/early '80s era, the skyscraping synth-pop of New Musik, and the tropical jazz of Azymuth. Wandt and Gottmanns wear their influences proudly while retaining all the invention and irreverence which has been a mainstay of their work, packing their personality into every track. The tension peaks in "Bittere Gifte," where stomping '80s machine-funk and psychedelic fusion breakdowns soundtrack a lyrical descent into suburban despair. Elsewhere, "Korsett Der Form" sparks infectious synth-pop joy, while "Nachlass Zu Lebzeiten" harnesses pure jazz-fusion power, complete with shuffling percussion and soaring guitar solos. "Blei" sweeps in with MTV-era widescreen pop, all windblown new-wave grandeur, while "Kalte Asche Und Orchideen" rides a fizzing punk-funk groove. The dreamlike "Puma" sways in a lullaby-like waltz, its jazzy cymbals and hypnotic bass drifting effortlessly, before cinematic closer "Landung" brings listeners back to earth. Fretless bass, chime-like synths, and tropical-tinged drum machines find a magical middle ground between Jamaican John Martyn and an impossibly happy version of The Cure. Across its 11 tracks, Neue Kreise expands and refines Neuzeitliche Bodenbel?ge's sound, propelling them into new circles, new spheres, and new sonic territory.

BAUMANN, PETER Nightfall LP
LP version. Hamburg's kosmische custodians at Bureau B welcome legendary synth maestro Peter Baumann back into the studio for his first solo album since Machines Of Desire (BB 234CD, 2016). A defining force in the Berlin School of electronic music, both as a member of Tangerine Dream in their most essential era, and as a solo artist, Baumann has always bridged the cerebral and the cinematic. With Nightfall, he embarks on another sonic odyssey, crafting an atmospheric album steeped in mystery and evocative storytelling. "Baumann's artistic vision has long been shaped by his exploration of the human condition. From his pioneering work with Tangerine Dream to his influential New Age imprint, Private Music, and his philosophical pursuits through the Baumann Foundation, his creativity and curiosity remain undiminished. Nightfall is the latest chapter in his five-decade journey -- an deeply emotional album that embraces impermanence to transport the listener into a series of shapeshifting soundscapes? The misty melancholia of opener 'No One Knows' pairs hypnotic woodblock rhythms with desert guitars, while 'Lost In A Pale Blue Sky' floats through celestial choirs and rolling timpani, evoking dreamlike introspection. Elsewhere, 'On The Long Road' pulses with insect-like percussion and serrated synth tones, exuding a ritualistic energy. Tracks like 'A World Apart' and 'From A Far Land' build tension through cascading melodies and rhythmic precision, evoking distant horizons and uncharted territories. 'Sailing Past Midnight' melds bass mallets with feedback-laden synths, conjuring a sense of movement and urgency, while 'I'm Sitting Here, Just For A While' layers snaking saxophones and hand percussion into a mystical, arcane soundscape. The album closes with the title track, 'Nightfall,' a deeply atmospheric piece wrapped in choral textures and shadowy undertones? From the very beginnings of his career, Peter Baumann has infused his work with a sense of the beyond and Nightfall is no exception. Each track invites the listener to interpret, to feel, and to immerse themselves in its crepuscular beauty? With Nightfall, the composer has created a shimmering doorway, just waiting for you to step through." --Patrick Ryder

DAS KINN Ruinenkampf LP
LP version. With his first full-length album Ruinenkampf, released via Hamburg based label Bureau B, Das Kinn embarks on a musical tour de force through the ruins of time. An electronic armada and kickbox phonetics lead listeners through haunting soundscapes somewhere between DAF, Kosmische Kuriere, and Frankfurt Bahnhofsviertel. Beats on full blast. Bones rattle. Warm synthlines played by cold hands. A saxophone ponders the after. Hymns for the demolition. Sonic meditations on decay. Music for the solemn decline."Toben Piel likes to visit cemeteries. In those places of peace and idyll he finds the distance to contemplate transience and consider the hereafter as a concrete location. His debut album Ruinenkampf comes from the same mindset -- distancing himself just enough to get straight to the point with a running start. It certainly doesn't sound anything like peace and idyll. It has more to do with the cassette scene, the 1980s, with staccato vocals, and synths somewhere between DAF and Kosmische Kuriere. Underground aesthetics. Torrents of melody, sophistication, constantly oscillating between anthem and demolition. And the crass power of that voice! These are eight pieces of intensive listening, always right on the mark. So how does it work? How can anybody create something like that? Well, this man in his forties from Frankfurt, still young at heart and ever hungry, has substantial experience: first with Antitainment (2005-2010), then together with the magnificent Charlotte Simon in Les Trucs, through his cassette label MMODEMM, and also as a musician on various theatre stages. Yet with Das Kinn he feels that he has now finally created music with a true sense of self-liberation." --Hendrik Otremba

One of the most astonishing young musicians to emerge in contemporary improvised music, Erez Dessel (b. 1998) is helping to revitalize the practice. An ace technician who studied at the New England Conservatory, Dessel is in no way conservative. Indeed, his bracing approach to the keyboard and deeply intuitive sense of form can be explosive, uncorked energy summoning references to Cecil Taylor and the Don Pullen/Milford Graves duets, and an almost Russian Romantic darkness -- imagine an improvised Mussorgsky -- offset by keen emotional intelligence, with joyful melodicism and an airborne quality. And nestled within Dessel's playing there's a perverse streak, a contrarianism that might call to mind Misha Mengelberg or Jim Baker. An active participant in Chicago's current creative music scene.

MAYFIELD, CURTIS Curtis LP
2025 restock; Reissue, originally released in 1970. "The first solo album by the former leader of the Impressions, Curtis represented a musical apotheosis for Curtis Mayfield -- indeed, it was practically the Sgt. Pepper's album of '70s soul, helping with its content and its success to open the whole genre to much bigger, richer musical canvases than artists had previously worked with. All of Mayfield's years of experience of life, music, and people were pulled together into a rich, powerful, topical musical statement that reflected not only the most up-to-date soul sounds of its period, finely produced by Mayfield himself, and the immediacy of the times and their political and social concerns, but also embraced the most elegant R&B sounds of the past. As a producer, Mayfield embraced the most progressive soul sounds of the era, stretching them out compellingly on numbers like 'Move on Up,' but he also drew on orchestral sounds (especially harps), to achieve some striking musical timbres (check out 'Wild and Free'), and wove all of these influences, plus the topical nature of the songs, into a neat, amazingly lean whole. There was only one hit single off of this record, '(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Down Below We're All Going to Go,' which made number three, but the album as a whole was a single entity and really had to be heard that way." --Bruce Eder, AllMusic

LUBELSKI, SAMARA V1/V2 LP
"Samara Lubelski builds delicate and intricate structures of webbed and sugary filigree but will also close her fist around a newly formed world just to watch what color it is when it oozes between her fingers. This music is the sound of becoming and unbecoming, of creation and destruction. The bow acts as an erase head on a tape machine in this context drawing half arcs that are then erased and redrawn with each stroke. Diving tones that circle back but to a new origin point and echo out endlessly. A Jim Starlin cosmos built of clusters and a kind of freeform geometry. Though creeping and alien there is also something very lyrical about this music, a poetry of momentum and stasis. Every move seems to create its immediate opposite -- patience/impatience, kinetic/fatigued, straight/curved, like opening a paper cutting to reveal its repeating shape but in a binary of opposition. 'Vol 1' begins with a descent into a world that is new and chaotic. The accretion of delicate shapes and the chaos of young jagged landscapes. A core rising in temperature, forcing out bubbling and colorful liquids in explosions and dripping piles. While in the distance a gaseous horizon line percolates into nothingness. With 'Vol 2,' listeners start with something more settled -- while still alien and exploratory there is an eye towards terraforming. A sense that we could settle here in this place where the wind screams through towers of glistening plants while geysers of silver viscous liquid arc into the sky and freeze there. By the end a silver and mirrored thread has looped together the mutating present with the far off and unknown and we are both here and gone. I hear in 'Vol 1' and '2' a stunning commitment to a liminality of sound. A denial of firm ground. It reminds me of 'Nordic skating,' the skaters that seek the black ice, the thinnest ice, to skate on. That's where the acoustic properties are the most beautiful and striking yet also where the most focus must be applied. Movement must be constant, not only to produce the sounds, but to avoid falling through." --Bill Nace, Philadelphia 2025

ORGANS OBSOLETE RRH1 LP
In Sightings, one of NYC's all-time greatest bands, the bass playing of Richard Hoffman fluidly shifted from propulsive to arrhythmic to sublimely melodic, sometimes all within one song. All the while occupying a teeth-rattling sonic space that was truly all his own. With his new solo project, Organs Obsolete, Richard's singular voice stands on its own, naked and unadorned. Here are eight solo bass meditations where looping patterns shift in and out of phase creating a hall of mirrors that is labyrinthine in its psychedelic potency. Even at lower volumes RRH1 presents a truly visceral experience with each track seemingly targeting a different part of the human anatomy.

BORUSIADE The Fall: A Series of Documented Experiences LP
"Borusiade lands on Dark Entries with their triumphant third LP, The Fall: A Series of Documented Experiences. The Romanian producer and DJ Miruna Boruzescu aka Borusiade has a track record of genre-bending releases on taste-making outlets like C?meme, Pinkman, Cititrax, and of course Dark Entries, who unleashed their stunning 2020 sophomore album Fortunate Isolation. The Fall builds on Borusiade's mythos with its nine brooding and sophisticated tracks investigating the contours of memory and embodiment -- the 'fragile bridge between body and mind' in Borusiade's words. Moody basslines and melancholy synths wrestle with muscular rhythms; this is electronic body music for the heart and head. This is their most diaristic work to date, as well, chronicling love and loss through the gauze of reflection. Tracks like 'Save Me,' 'Recovery and Redemption,' and 'The Fall' sprung from painful breakups, periods which Borusiade identifies as some of their most creatively fruitful, finding themselves 'making the best music when I was brokenhearted.' There are odes to musical titans: the minimal electro producer Porn Darsteller is commemorated on 'Darsteller,' while industrial legends Genesis P-Orrige and Lady Jaye are honored on 'Pandrogyne.' The Fall comes housed in a sleeve using Gautier D'Agoty's 'Essai d'Anatomie,' an anatomical work from 1745, and also includes a lyric sheet. Trauma, from lost love to pandemic isolation, informs The Fall, situating itself as a gap that can only be accessed through sound and the creation of art."

VAN HOEN, MARK The Eternal Present 2CD
Limited edition (400) vinyl with artwork by Ian Anderson and double CD. CD contains the tracks from Plan For A Miracle. Pioneering British electronic musician Mark Van Hoen presents his latest solo album, The Eternal Present, a remarkable collection of tracks spanning nearly three decades of recordings from 1998 to 2024. The Eternal Present embodies its philosophical title, inspired by Joseph Campbell's concept that "Eternity is that dimension of here and now that all thinking in temporal terms cuts off." The album explores music as the ultimate expression of existing in the present moment, transcending time and creating a sonic experience that is simultaneously "spectral, ghostly, melodic, harmonic, and decayed." An influential contemporary of Aphex Twin, Autechre, LFO and Boards of Canada, Van Hoen is best known for his solo work as Locust in the mid-'90s, which helped push post-rave electronic music into newly challenging realms. The Eternal Present continues the lineage of Van Hoen's most significant works, with artwork by Ian Anderson (Designers Republic) reflecting the album's "eternal present" concept with a mysterious visual approach, allowing listeners to form their own imaginary landscapes. The mastering by Stefan Betke (Pole) enhances this document of the evolution of the artist over the years as he continues to hone his signature sound. Using a host of instruments including analogue synthesizers and employing various recording approaches, Van Hoen's equipment changed dramatically over the years, contributing to the album's rich sonic diversity. Throughout The Eternal Present, ideas are woven together through spoken word quotations and abstract vocals featuring notable collaborations from Rachel Goswell on the Slowdive cover "Shine" (from 1998), Megan Mitchell (Cruel Diagonals) on "Somewhere", and session vocalists Clare Dove and Dorothy Takev on "No-One Leave" and "It's Not You (In A Way)" respectively. The album was recorded across multiple locations including Somerset, London, Los Angeles, and New York, reflecting Van Hoen's changing personal circumstances, environments, and situations throughout the years.

LAGOSS & ABAGWAGWA Island Slang LP
A meeting of minds and bodies on a heady percussive trip with no clear destination, captured live at Espacio Cultural El Tanque in Tenerife. With both imaginary and lived in tropical sceneries coalescing the two units, both Tenerife's Lagoss and Kampala's Abagwagwa (aka Nihiloxica) find a common thread to disentangle throughout different cartographies. As if it was bound to happen. As it did. Taking Abagwagwa's relentless barrage of polyrhythms as a starting point to jammin' excursions that never falter into self-indulgence, brimming with ideas and spirits pulled from East African traditions, free jazz cosmologies, Dub tactics, urban sonic warfare and different strains of psychedelia through a vast array of drums, percussion, flutes, skewed synths, ecstatic vocals and electronic processing. Island Slang is a celebration that's truly alluring in its search for some sort of "Universal Consciousness."

LA POLLA RECORDS Ellos Dicen Mierda Nosotros Amen LP
The cover, created by Manolo Gil and based on the band's own idea, bears an undeniable resemblance to that of The Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet (Decca, 1968). Sometime later, the band said they were not aware of the resemblance when the final design of the album was decided. The recording and mixing were once again in the hands of Jean Phocas. The double-sheet inside, which contains only the lyrics in three languages (Spanish, Basque and English), is particularly noteworthy. On this occasion, the album's production seems to have a guitar sound that is perhaps more powerful than on other occasions. At times it even sounds like the arrangements of a heavy rock or metal band. Green color vinyl.

Jean Phocas appears as the person in charge of the recording, once again carried out at the Elkar studios. Manolo Gil, who already worked with the band from Salvatierra in the same role on Ellos Dicen Mierda, Nosotros Am?n, assisted by Jokin Larrea, is in charge of the cover design. Apart from the atypical Los Jubilados, this is the album in which the changes in the band's sound are most noticeable. From the start, the heavy, cutting guitars are striking, more in keeping with a metal rock band. The production is very technical. Despite this, "Radio Crime" is one of the best on the album. LUCENA, AGUSTIN PEREYRA Puertos De Alternativa CD
Far Out Recordings continues its reissue campaign of the late Argentinian guitarist Agustin Pereyra Lucena's work with the first-ever vinyl reissue of his singular 1988 private press album, Puertos De Alternativa, now his most sought-after LP. The album features some of Agustin's most uniquely beautiful compositions, including "Luces de Valeria" and "Preparativos Maritimos," alongside Baden Powell's "Peque?o Vals" and "O Cego Aderaldo (Nordeste)," and "Tema Barroco" by his longtime collaborator, Guilhermo Reuter. By 1988, Agust?n had established himself as one of Argentina's foremost interpreters of Brazilian music. The seventies saw success with his group Candeias, and he gained recognition in Brazil, forming friendships and collaborations with luminaries such as Vinicius de Moraes, Baden Powell, Dorival Caymmi, Toquinho, and Maria Bethania. Following the era of dictatorship in South America, Agust?n spent the late seventies and early eighties, living and touring in Norway as part of his European travels with his group Agust?n Pereyra Lucena Quartet. Recorded after returning to his native Buenos Aires, Agustin Peyera Lucena's Puertos de Alternativa emerged from this confluence of diverse experiences and influences, revealing an artist deeply connected to his environment. The album's title, meaning "Alternative Harbours," reflects Agust?n's particular affinity for water. He observed that much of his favorite music originated from places with rivers and seas nearby, noting, "There is a flow near water that influences guitar playing for sure." With a profound connection to both instrument and environment, Agust?n's music is often difficult to place. The album begins rooted deeply in South American soil, drawing clear inspiration from Brazilian guitar masters like Heitor Villa Lobos, Garoto, and Baden Powell. But, as it progresses, a sense of journey unfolds, evoking new landscapes and horizons -- from the crystalline beauty of glacial Norway to the gentle currents of the Rio de la Plata. The ensemble on Puertos de Alternativa features notable Argentinian musicians, including drummer Osvaldo Avena, flautist Rub?n Izarrualde, and saxophonist Bernardo Baraj. Mastered by Stuart Hawkes at Metropolis Studios from the original master tapes which had been lovingly kept by Agustin's nephew Jos? Lucena Perreyra.

AZYMUTH Marca Passo CD
In an ever-expanding musical universe, Azymuth have long existed as a celestial giant, drawing countless artists, musicians and followers into their orbit. Marking fifty years since their 1975 debut album Azimuth, their new album Marca Passo proves that the band's alchemic brew of Brazilian jazz-funk and cosmic samba soul remains as vital as ever, as the group honors the profound legacy of their departed founders. Recorded in Rio de Janeiro, Marca Passo is the first full-length release since the passing of founding drummer Ivan "Mam?o" Conti in 2023, following the earlier loss of keyboardist Jos? Roberto Bertrami in 2012. Alex Malheiros, the sole remaining original member, sees his stewardship of the band's musical legacy as his spiritual duty. He is joined by the equally devoted Kiko Continentino (Milton Nascimento, Djavan) on keyboards, who has been with the group since 2016, and new recruit Renato Massa (Marcos Valle, Ed Motta) on drums. Yet since their earliest recorded music, Azymuth have always been far greater than the sum of their parts. The "three-man orchestra's" unmistakable sound is rooted in Brazil's MPB studio scene of the 1970s and early 1980s -- a time when artists blended traditional Brazilian rhythms with global jazz, rock, and emerging psychedelic and progressive elements. Marca Passo continues this legacy, seamlessly fusing Brazilian musical traditions with global influences while showcasing the exceptional musicianship that powers Azymuth's distinctive, multi-dimensional sound. The album is produced by studio mastermind Daniel Maunick, responsible for Azymuth's two previous studio albums, F?nix in 2016 and Aurora in 2011. Daniel's credits also include albums by Marcos Valle, Sabrina Malheiros and Terry Callier. Azymuth also invited Daniel's father, British jazz-funk royalty Jean Paul "Bluey" Maunick, of Incognito, to play guitar on a new version of Azymuth's eighties classic "Last Summer In Rio," in tribute to the song's composer, Jos? Roberto Bertrami. Equally, "Samba Pro Mamao" is a new composition dedicated to Azymuth's beloved original drummer, Ivan "Mam?o" Conti. Also available on black vinyl (FARO 251LP), red vinyl (FARO 251RED-LP), and blue vinyl (FARO 251BLUE-LP).

CUNNINGHAM & JORGEN TELLER, MARK Next CD
"While they have collaborated a good many times, Next is the first recorded evidence of Danish guitarist (or more properly Bastardist) J?rgen Teller playing with American ex-pat multi-instrumentalist Mark Cunningham. The pair both have long histories on the fringes of known sounds. I first heard Teller as a member of the dizzily freakoid Tzarina Q Cut and Cunningham's decades of musical adventurism with Mars, Don King, Bestia Ferida, Blood Quartet, etc. have been well documented, not least by us. This is Mark's tenth FTR release! The four pieces here are improvised instrumental duets. The material was recorded in October 2023, as part of an ongoing residency Mark has at the Fabra I Coats creation center in Barcelona. Throughout, Teller plays Le Bastard (a Hofner 137 electric guitar with two bass strings and three guitar strings). Cunningham plays mostly trumpet and delays, but also whips out his old Dan Electro for one of the tracks. Overall, the sonic results are droney, druggy, lightly-noisesome slabs of brilliant buzz. In a general way, J?rgen's amped strings set up a humbucking sound-sheet against which he and Mark can each toss spontaneous squibs of creation and destruction, When Mark is playing trumpet and pedals, the music sometimes manifests a strange sort of charm that almost has the feel of a noise rock approach to the Canterbury Sound. By which, I mean the stuff is rackety, but there are built-in glissandos that make me think of nothing less Camel's brilliant live work on the Greasy Truckers Live at Dingwalls Dancehall. Of course, these moments resolve themselves in weirder ways than any Pete Bardens has ever dreamed up, but it demonstrates the duo's avant-prog game is strong! The doubled guitar track (called 'Next 3' to contrast it with 'Next 1,' 'Next 2,' and 'Next 4') is a superb piece of string work with rockist overtones that put fellow in mind of some of the best moments by classic two-man string units like the Smashchords or early Half Japanese. But with a more overtly hypnagogic overlay that forces your brain's receptors to stretch themselves in new ways. It's all amazing stuff. Sounding so fully evolved you'll be tempted to swear it weren't improvised! But you'd be wrong, friend. Some people just have the gift. To paraphrase that old softy, Lou Reed, their week beats your year. Get up with it!" --Byron Coley, 2025

MERTENS, JEF Orchid Alto LP
Belgian musician and filmmaker Jef Mertens has been an active force in the experimental music and film scene for nearly two decades. Known for his documentaries on artists like Sonic Youth and Borbetomagus, as well as his work with the now-defunct Dadaist Tapes label, Mertens continues to push the boundaries of sound exploration. His previous solo works include No Mathematics, released on KRAAK/Feeding Tube Records. With Orchid Alto, Mertens dedicates himself to the taishogoto, a Japanese stringed instrument that became a new focal point in his sonic explorations. Initially drawn to its unique tonal qualities, he approached the instrument with an open-ended curiosity, using it as a means to reshape his musical language. The transition to taishogoto marked a shift away from guitar-based compositions, offering a fresh perspective on texture and resonance. Through these explorations, Orchid Alto serves as a blueprint for new sonic possibilities. A bold and immersive sonic journey, Orchid Alto merges traditional resonance with modern experimentalism, further shaping Mertens' artistic voice -- one influenced by artists like Michael Flower, Turner Williams Jr., and Bill Nace. Edition of 200. Co-release with Aguirre. Performed, recorded and edited by Jef Mertens at Scherpendries, Geel, 2023. Mixed and mastered by J?rgen De Blonde. Artwork by Jim Faes.

ESPLENDOR GEOMETRICO Tarikat 2LP
Geometrik Records presents the first-ever double vinyl release of Tarikat, featuring 16 tracks recorded between 1986 and 1989, originally released on the now out-of-print 1997 double CD (Daft Records) and the 1991 cassette. 16 remastered tracks showcasing Esplendor Geom?trico's unique 1980s sound, with influences from industrial, noise, tribal, and African music. A key release for fans of E.G., capturing their innovative and influential style that shaped industrial music and techno. This release is reminiscent of other albums like Arispejal Astisar?, Nador, and Sheikh Aljama. Rough, primitive and minimalist, the tracks are constructed on distorted and noise rhythms, sometimes industrial, sometimes with tribal and African influences using synthesizers and analog electronic instruments. Gabriel Riaza, founding member of E.G. until 1991, worked in Melilla (North Africa) during those years, and this influenced the conception of many of Tarikat's tracks. The images used in this release are by Andr?s Noarbe, who was responsible for Esplendor Geom?trico's graphic design during the eighties and also served as the band's manager. The overall design is by Alonso Urbanos. Recorded by Arturo Lanz and Gabriel Riaza in Madrid and Melilla (North Africa) between 1986 and 1989. Tarikat is available as a limited-edition double LP.

VA Picaro Vol. 4 LP
Flamenco is a Spanish art, which has always been prone to hybridization with a multitude of musical languages. Therefore, the universe of "flamenco fusion" could well reflect the way in which Spaniards have related throughout history with other cultures. And that relationship may have often been one of dialogue, exchange, respect and crossbreeding. Among the circumstances that could have favored the traditional mestizaje of flamenco art is the open character of the south of the Iberian Peninsula, to all the civilizations that have settled in its territories; the encounter with America in 1492, and the brotherhood with the Spanish-speaking countries; that the Casa de contrataci?n de Indias, the entity that regulated the transit between Spain and America for centuries, was founded in none other than Seville! (and ol?); without forgetting the fundamental African contribution, brought to America by millions of black slaves throughout the 400 years of the slave trade. P?caro Vol. 4 is an excellent example of how some Spanish flamenco musicians knew how to take advantage of the fashion of other styles and rhythms coming from outside Spain, creating a new sound universe and incorporating them into their repertoire. Undoubtedly, there is a generational replacement of "flamenco Ye-Ye" in Spain with artists like Rosal?a or C. Tangana, although now it will be necessary to modernize "the label". This compilation offers listeners a snapshot of the multiple styles of flamenco hybridization that triumphed in the world during the decades of the '50s and '60s of the 20th century. Through its microsurcos comes immeasurable flamenco ye y? (track 1), flamenco rock and roll (tracks 3 and 4), flamenco cha cha ch? (tracks 6, 7 and 15) or flamenco mambo (track 12), together with other unusual, exotic and impossible mixes of Spanish song with tango arrabalero, bluegrass, easy listening, swing, groove or soul. Always a happy mix, brought together with exquisite taste in this vinyl for your enjoyment. Featuring Juana Chicharro, Encarnita, Amina Y Su Cuadro Flamenco, Dolores Abril Y Juanito Valderrama, El Titi, Mar?a Bonita Y Jos? De Moreno, Los Alcarson, Paquito Jerez, Rosita, Rafael Mart?nez Y Su Orquesta, Emilio Varela, Felipe Campuzano, Los Espa?oles, Tito Moya Y Su Orquesta, Los Plata, and Rosa Morena.

Throughout their formative years, the band underwent what proved to be a very significant evolution, transitioning from a four-piece to a more cohesive and harmonious power trio. This lineup currently consists of guitarist and founder Eddie Brnabic, vocalist and bassist Laura Phillips, and drummer Harry Silvers. In 2019, Hippie Death Cult caught the attention of Cursed Tongue Records, who signed them for the release of their highly-anticipated album 111. The record was met with widespread acclaim, solidifying their place in the music scene. Building on this success, the band made another significant move in 2021 by signing with Heavy Psych Sounds Records. This partnership resulted in the release of their album Circle of Days and a split release titled Doom Sessions Vol. 5 with label mates High Reeper. Both full-length albums soared to the very top of the Doom Charts as well as many "Album Of The Year" lists, further cementing their status as a rising force in the genre. Beyond their studio work, Hippie Death Cult is renowned for their electrifying and passionate stage performances. Their captivating stage presence have taken them on tours across the United States, Canada, and Europe, where they have garnered a dedicated and growing fanbase. With their unwavering dedication to their craft and their ability to push boundaries, Hippie Death Cult is poised to leave an indelible mark on the music scene for years to come.

BARON & ARTHUR BLYTHE & BILL FRISELL, JOEY We'll Soon Find Out CD
"The second coming of Joey Baron's fantastic al-star Jazz band Well, this album doesn't open as ostentatiously grooving as the preceding Down Home did with the track 'Mighty Fine,' but nevertheless We'll Soon Find Out is a grandiose second chapter in the history of the 'Down Home band.' If their debut sort of illustrated a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood, then this album might be viewed as the (musical equivalent of the) subsequent hanging out at the local club, with elegant surroundings, suave drinks and an exchange of amusing or introspective stories among good friends. Once again Baron, Blythe, Carter and Frisell deliver nine tracks of the finest. What looked like a one-time lucky strike of a project has become a working band with We'll Soon Find Out, a band you want to meet again and again."

MIER, JULIEN Gradually LP
Gradually, the latest album by Julien Mier, is a sonic journey that delves into the transitions of life, identity, and the blurred boundaries between art and personal growth. With a trilingual brain, Mier reflects on how language shifts have shaped his sense of self throughout his life and the music that he writes. Gradually is his exploration of shapelessness -- an urge to break free from rigid musical genres and get closer to his most fundamental expression. The album is composed of nine tracks, each representing a distinct cultural and linguistic influence, all tied together by the theme of gradual evolution. The first section, "Ciel, Soleil, and Espace" (French for Sky, Sun, and Space), draws on Mier's French heritage, evoking the feeling of childhood memories bathed in a warm, nostalgic glow. This fluid, atmospheric section mirrors the soft, ever-changing air, symbolizing a time of pure, untainted intention. It feels like a hazy, sepia-toned dream, as fleeting and elusive as the scent of an old friend. The second section, "Steen, Zee, and Zand" (Dutch for Stone, Sea, and Sand), channels the influence of Mier's childhood in a small Dutch dune village. These tracks are grounded in the hard-edged textures of electronic dance music, a genre that introduced him to a world of rhythm and movement. It's a sonic landscape rooted in stability, a foundation from which everything can grow. The tracks build from the fluidity of the first section into more structured, rhythmic territories, mirroring the natural transition from childhood innocence to the discovery of deeper, more grounded musical influences. The final section, "Scrap" (a collaborative track with the Japanese producer Daisuke Tanabe), "Soil," and "Spark," dives into the exploration of the world beyond familiar borders. Mier's relocation from the Netherlands to Australia in 2016 is reflected in these pieces, which grapple with the contrast and complexity of different cultures and environments. These tracks are tinged with rust-red hues and a sense of eroded beauty, evoking a more fragmented, distorted view of the world. The music here is marked by tension, conflict, and the erosion of once-solid forms -- symbolic of the digital and ecological storms that shape our modern existence.

PORTAL, MICHEL Our Meanings And Our Feelings LP
2025 restock; reissue, originally released in 1969. An iconic French free jazz record recorded at Path? Marconi Studios. On June 27th, 1969, Michel Portal pushed the door of the Path? Marconi studios. With him were drummers Jacques Thollot and Aldo Romano, bassist Jean-Fran?ois Jenny-Clark, and pianist Joachim K?hn. They hadn't rehearsed anything, as if entering the studio to record an album without any plan was something normal. The musicians were obviously very used to playing with each other, as the five tracks on Our Meanings And Our Feelings seem to flow perfectly without any hint of improvisation. The zokra, an oriental clarinet that Michel Portal plays on "Walking Through The Land" and "Dear Old Morocco" brings a singular touch to this album. This singularity is transcended by Joachim K?hn's ability to easily go from the piano to the saxophone alto, from supporting to soloing, before playing the bells, then the tambourine, opening the soundscape. Our Meanings And Our Feelings may not be the first French free jazz record -- as it was preceded by the fantastic Free Jazz by Fran?ois Tusques, released in 1965 and on which Michel Portal plays as well -- but it remains one of the most important. Its incredible outburst of sounds and melodies is completely free yet never turns into cacophony. 44 years after its release, it is still urgent to listen to Our Meanings And Our Feelings and what these five talented musicians had to say.

SONAMI, LAETITIA Dangerous Women: Early Works 1985-2005 2CD
Laetitia Sonami was born in France, where she studied with Eliane Radigue. She moved to the United States to study electronic music, first with Joel Chadabe at SUNY Albany, then at Mills College where she was mentored by Robert Ashley and David Behrman. Laetitia Sonami is not only a gifted composer/designer of electronic music, but a compelling presence on stage. This collection of early works covers a period when Sonami transitioned from live mixing with cassettes, homemade analog synths and objects in the early eighties, to working with MIDI, MAX software and "off the shelf" synths and samplers. At the same time, she begins a long collaboration with Melody Sumner Carnahan, using her dramatic texts to evoke characters and behaviors to inhabit musically and visually. All but two of the works on this release utilize Sumner Carnahan's stories, and all but one use Sonami's famous invention, the lady's glove, an arm-length tailored glove fitted with movement sensors allowing the perform to fluidly control digital sound parameters and processing, as well as motors, lights and video playback. Sonami has since moved on to works for another of her inventions, the Spring Spyre, which applies Machine Learning to real time audio synthesis.

RIBA, PAU Electroccid Accid Alquimistic Xoc LP
Electr?ccid ?ccid alquim?stic xoc marks a shift in Pau Riba's sound -- now electrified and fully embracing rock under the influence of artists like Lou Reed, Ray Davies, and Kevin Ayers. Once again, Riba left everyone bewildered with a work that, on its own, gave early substance to what would eventually be known as roc catal?, of which Riba may well have been its most authentic representative. First vinyl reissue in over four decades! The magical "Dioptria" had been left behind. The album was recorded in the winter of 1975 with the help of the same group of musicians who had accompanied Riba a few months earlier at a concert at Zeleste to debut new songs: a mix of Valencian musicians from bands like Paranoia Dea and guitarist Eduardo Bort's group. The core of Electr?ccid is defined by Riba's own authorship. With lyrics that veer from poetic to absurdly ironic, Riba explores themes like the moon, the stars, death, love, women, the devil, and the bourgeoisie -- fueling the originality that made him such a unique artist. It's striking how naturally and effortlessly Riba incorporated the Catalan language into the rock idiom -- and vice versa.

DECIMA VICTIMA Singles 5x7" BOX
D?cima V?ctima were a Spanish band that, during their short-lived career, developed a very personal sound reminiscent of Joy Division, The Cure, and other British post-punk bands. Although commercial success evaded them, rarely has any Spanish band achieved such a high degree of quality and coherence in their music and personality. This box set comprises all the singles released by the band throughout their career, from 1982 to 1984, now reissued for the first time in their original format. The artwork has been updated by the band members themselves, and the set also includes a 12-page booklet. Limited edition of 700 copies. Despite only being active for under three years, D?cima V?ctima left a long-lasting legacy, and their influence would later be heard in Spanish bands such as Family, Los Planetas, and Sr Chinarro. The story of D?cima V?ctima started in 1981, with Carlos Entrena, rehearsing with Lars and Per Mertanen, and a drum machine, in the cellar of the Mertanens' house in Madrid. A few months later they made their first studio recording, a demo recorded on a 4-track. And shortly after, with their friends from the band Esclarecidos, they started the independent label Grabaciones Accidentales (GASA) and were able to start releasing their own records. Their first single was released in 1982, featuring Lars on drums. Shortly after, Esclarecidos introduced Jose Brena to them and he joined D?cima V?ctima as drummer.

PETS, THE El Entierro De Un Hombre Rico Que Murio De Hambre 7"
This is one of the most obscure singles ever released in Venezuela in the '60s. The outstanding The Pets' original "El entierro de un hombre rico que muri? de hambre" is one of the finest garage tunes to emerge from Latin America. Their stunning take on The Door's "Hello, I Love You" takes the B side. A garage DJs favorite! First time 45 reissue, audios remastered from the original tapes. It followed the global triumph of The Beatles that made the wave of beat groups get bigger and bigger and lots of new bands emerged, some of which would last while others would definitively go into oblivion, and a small number of them would leave at least one recording that today is considered a highly valuable collector's item. This is the case of The Pets. The band's only album, released in 1967, shows perfectly what the influences of the Venezuelan nueva ola (new wave) scene were at the time, including versions of The Doors, Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Paul Revere & The Riders.

AMANE Moments Of Solace LP
Moments of Solace is the introspective new album from London-based artist, musical director, and producer Amane, released via M?sica Macondo. Across six beautifully crafted tracks, Amane distills elements of ambient electronica, IDM, and jazz, creating music that evokes a deeply emotional journey through sound. From the outset, Moments of Solace is contemplative and hypnotic, weaving together the pulse of electronic percussion, the glow of nocturnal pads, and the calming resonance of synths. Echoes fade and return like tides -- forming ecstatic waves of sound that invite the listener into a space of reflection and emotional release. For Amane, this collection serves as a creative response to a world that feels increasingly chaotic and dark -- offering listeners a sonic refuge. The album channels the ambient excursions of Boards of Canada, the rhythmic urgency of a Floating Points club set, and the cinematic sweep of night drives along the Pacific Coast Highway or meditative rides on Japan's Shinkansen. Despite an intense touring schedule, Amane found the time to craft this personal and globally resonant work. Moments of Solace mirrors his life experience as a nonstop traveling artist -- soundtracking late nights, contemplative moments, and euphoric dance floors alike.

STRUFALDI, SAMUELE Davorio LP
Davorio is a powerful and heartfelt album born from a musical collaboration between Italian pianist and composer Samuele Strufaldi and the villagers of Gohouo-Zagna in the Ivory Coast's Guemon region. Released on M?sica Macondo Records, the project blends Gu?r? traditional music, jazz, western classical and electronica, creating a modern musical language that tells the stories, traditions, and spirit of the village across 16 tracks. This unique project uses music as a bridge between cultures, while supporting the construction of a community space library and music studio for the children of Gohouo-Zagna. The project's journey began in August 2019, when Strufaldi was invited by local djembe player Boris Pierrou to visit Gohouo-Zagna. Immersing himself in the life of the village, Strufaldi was inspired by Pierrou's vision of creating a library space to foster learning, cultural preservation, and music-making for future generations. From this initial encounter, Davorio took shape as a collaborative cultural exchange that transcends borders, time, and genre. During his time in Gohouo-Zagna, Strufaldi, alongside Francesco Gherardi and Boris Pierrou, worked closely with Gu?r? musicians. The album captures the pulse of the village itself -- from recordings of children's clapping games and percussion sessions to traditional songs and ambient village sounds. Interspersed between the tracks are 40-second "audio photographs" offering glimpses of daily life, each carefully annotated in the liner notes to preserve the meaning and story behind the music. The Gu?r? people, part of the wider Kru ethnic group, have safeguarded their folk music and percussive traditions for centuries. On Davorio, their legacy intertwines with Strufaldi's lush electronic production, intricate jazz structures, and expressive saxophone melodies. Rhodes keys ripple against the driving beat of djembe drums, while elements of drum & bass and ambient jungle rhythms elevate the album into a truly global, yet rooted, sonic experience. "I feel that the creative process into a collective and unconscious territory belongs to everybody, where we can meet each other and find and share new treasures," Strufaldi reflects -- a sentiment that resonates deeply throughout the record. Davorio stands as a testament to the power of music to connect communities, honor traditions, and build a better future.

SMITH, PATTI Teenage Perversity & Ships in the Night (The Roxy, Los Angeles, January 30, 1976 LP
"There is no doubt that Teenage Perversity & Ships in the Night, although a bootleg, is Patti Smith's best live album. Patti Smith released some good albums, but any serious fan of hers will tell you that she performed most of her material better live. There are a number of fine Patti Smith bootlegs, but this one -- taken from a January 1976 show at the Roxy in Los Angeles, with near-perfect fidelity -- is both her best and her best-known. Besides incendiary versions of several songs from her first few LPs, it features covers of 'Louie Louie,' 'My Generation' (with John Cale guesting), and The Velvet Underground's 'We're Gonna Have a Good Time Together' and 'Pale Blue Eyes,' as well as entertaining between-song raps and even a brief cameo by Iggy Pop. It's no exaggeration to claim that this may be her best album, and one of the best '70s punk/new wave albums of all."

GRUPPO ADRA Gruppo AdRa LP
There is a night in the Naarm/Melbourne music scene that takes place every Tuesday night, known as the "Make it up club." A meeting place where all improvisers, from all walks of life come together to make it up. Many stories have unfolded because of this wonderful institution, there have been many collaborations, many bands, many interactions. A place that values the beginner as much as the master, and is there even such a thing? This is where Rama Parwata and Adam Halliwell met, playing in a multitude of collaborations set for the outer reaches of sonic explorations. A center for birthing their ideas and watching them grow into fountains of sonic possibilities. Rama having reputation for his audacious and technical aural explorations in sound, texture and rhythm on the drum-kit, drawing influence from jazz, extreme metal, and Gamelan music from his Balinese and Indonesian heritage. Adam for his sensitivity to dynamics, form and narrative and his lucidity/chaos juxtapositional-style drawing on influences in pop to folk, and free music and jazz. They unite together with their love of the freer sides of jazz and improvised music, alla Peter Br?tzmann and Ganelin Trio to the more funk laden music of Bitches Brew and Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi. It's when musicians find a synergy together, be it through sound conversations, be it through mouth conversations, or be it through the love of what other musicians have said before them, then they can go forth and collaborate freely. As is the case for this duo. Rama and Adam play from different worlds but find a synergy amongst the humanity of sound. The name of this group Gruppo AdRa, is a simple combination name of Ad'am and Ra'ma, Gruppo is used because of our combined Italian heritage. As Rama and Adam are primarily live musicians, improvising and using the studio as a tool is new to this duo. This recording is an experiment in composing from percussion first. To feel movement in harmony and arrangement through the improvising senses of a percussionist. The result is a thorough composed work, a narrative starting inside the body and expanding outward into the world and beyond.

ROACH, STEVE The Reverent Sky CD
"As a significant metaphor in Steve Roach's sonic milieu, the ever-evolving sky inspired these lush ambient layers of enveloping atmospherics. The album's four longform compositions slowly unfurl harmonic wonder and timeless spectral melodies balanced with grounded mantra-like rhythmic elements. Created in his desert ridgetop Timehouse studio which looks out onto a vast distant horizon -- equal parts land and sky -- The Reverent Sky reflects Roach's ongoing dialogue with the worlds beyond the studio, his artistic process shaped by the panoramic vistas outside and the unbound inspiration within. Perched amidst this breathtaking view as he creates, Roach infuses his music with the subtle yet profound transitions at the very heart of this auditory experience: the light of daybreak to evening twilight, sunrise to sunset and the ethereal transitions of night's deep sky. The dynamic and emotional spectrums reveal a profound sense of intimacy, grace, beauty, longing and mystery in a style Roach refers to as 'essentialism.' He reflects, 'This is about retaining only what is vital and essential to the creation of each piece as a pure and deeply emotive sonic sensory experience.' Born from his hand-sculpting of sound, the music is formed on hardware instruments. They are the heart of his unique and personal palette of colors which paint the reverent sky with the Oberheim Xpander and OB-6, Mellotron -- Resch Edition, Hydrasynth Deluxe, Novation Bass Station II, Nord Lead 2X, Roland TR-8S, Yamaha CP33 Electric Grand and for the first time in his work, the innovative Osmose Synth by Expressive E. Manifesting pure atmospheric reverie balanced with a timeless pulse, Roach remains a constant innovator in the world of ambient electronic music. His work connects and expresses the world around us and the realms within."

MAL-ONE Ska Tone E.P. 12"
The 2 Tone sound was a great period in the aftermath of punk and included influences taken from Jamaican Ska. Mal-One had already worked on some 2 Tone collages and had them put aside for some future project. He thought it would be fun to record some tracks related to these images and sounds. The first track he recorded was an instrumental track in the style of Harry J All Stars "Liquidator" which he called "Rude Boy Shuffle." Initially to be put out as a stand-alone track on some reggae label of some sort. He had a poem already which he called "Two Tone Story," so put that on top of the "Ska Train Is Back In Town" rhythm which he had put together for another song of that name. Finally "Rude Boys and Rude Girls Listen Up!" came together. Adding to this a couple of dub mixes and comes a six-track 12". Mal-One thought the artwork worked better on a 12" format. Hope you enjoy the outcome.

How is it connected to a particular event in a grotesque and cyclical novella riddled with medical procedures of an aesthetic and deforming nature? Malakoot -- this spiral, centers on a decision made one afternoon by a character. On a similar afternoon, full of anxiety, pressed by an unknowable presence in this city, I decided that the soundscape for such an inspiring work of fiction was a mutilated one; things collapsing in on themselves, self-decapitating, full of cuts and sutures. The material for all the surgeries was two of the earliest solo piano recordings in Iran's history, played by an incredibly ordinary but, at the same time, fascinatingly suspicious character. The procedures were performed both on the snippets and cuts of the recordings themselves and with the help of various digital methods, on synthesized resurrections made from their transcriptions."

GUSTAFSSON & KEN VANDERMARK & TOMEKA REID, MATS Pivot CD
"The band showed up, four folks from three different spots on the globe -- Chicago (Vandermark, Reid); Nickelsdorf, Austria (Gustafsson); Philadelphia (Taylor). They assembled their gear and sound-checked at the studio. There was a four-way freedom at play, structures but liberties and no need for elaborate explanation. Everyone spoke the same shorthand. Cues were understood; timings were implicit and considered; space was made for chances to be taken. In creative music, you sometimes need to rehearse a band incessantly to get to a level of understanding, that 'condition of secrecy' that Inger Christensen speaks of in relation to poetry. Not so with this ensemble. Some scores with directions and motifs that specify the relationships, but also the relationships prefiguring their being directed, relationships between the people themselves, the standing understanding between Mats and Ken, who worked together extensively for the last 30 years including the quartet version of Gustafsson's AALY and of course the Br?tzmann Tentet. The relationship between Chad and Tomeka including the cellist's Hear in Now Expanded and in Rob Mazurek's bands; the one between Ken and Tomeka including a quartet with Hamid Drake and Lemuel Marc; one between Chad and Ken in the trio Side A, with pianist H?vard Wiik; one between Mats and Tomeka dating back to a 2017 studio session that might someday see light of day. The relationships and their prepositions. Not only simple prepositions, like 'on' or 'in,' 'above' or 'below.' More subtle ones, like 'across' or 'through.' Relationships of duration and transfiguration. Not just 'since,' but 'until.'" --John Corbett

NOGUES & JOHN SURMAN, KRISTEN Diriaou CD
When they performed a handful of concerts as a duo in the summer of 1998, Kristen Nogu?s and John Surman had already worked a lot on the interweaving of genres: Nogu?s had confronted traditional Breton music with contemporary music and Surman had changed his jazz into atmospheric numbers that would be amongst the finest recording on the ECM label. As a duo, the harpist and the saxophonist would go on to invent something different: free folk, traditional ambient, modal 'fest-noz'. It is difficult to label, because the duo Nogu?s/Surman is one of a kind. Diriaou means "Thursday" in Breton. It is also the title of the first piece that Kristen Nogu?s and John Surman played together in 1991. Nogu?s learned the Breton language as a child, at the same time as the Celtic harp, "taking lessons with Denise M?gevand, who would go on to teach others, notably Alan Stivell. At the beginning of the 1970s, she discovered the Breton song tradition (soniou and gwerziou) and became involved in N?v?no?, a cooperative of traditional expression founded by G?rard Delahaye and Patrick Ewen. She recorded a single with the two musicians in 1974, then her first album, two years later. Everyone who has listened to Kristen Nogu?s debut Marc'h Gouez is now aware of her mysterious plucked strings. Her art, leaving Brittany, would go on to take in all landscapes and folklores, in the same as that of John Surman, conceived a little further north including vernacular jazz, international fusion with Chris McGregor or Miroslav Vitou, and exploring more personal territory. Kristen Nogu?sand John Surman thus shared an "extra-Celtic" inspiration infused with free improvisation. On this recording, made in 1998 by Tanguy Le Dor? at the Dre Ar Wenojenn festival, the duo uses original compositions which refer back to traditional songs (Maro Pontkalek, Le Scorff). The musicians then create fantastic impressions: Baz Valan, on which Nogu?s and Surman have a heavenly exchange; Kernow, on which the shared theme slowing disappears into the mist; Maro Pontkalek and Diriaou which move from the storm to the calm. Elsewhere, there is singing, first with Surman (Kleier) and then moving on to Nogu?s (Kerzhadenn and her signature song Berceuse). On a canvas of traditional music, the two musicians weave countless memorable landscapes.

CHRISMA Chinese Restaurant LP
2025 repress. Spittle Records presents a reissue of Chinese Restaurant by Italian new wave duo Chrisma, originally released in 1977. The album was recorded between London and Milano during the second half of 1977, and the results were something like post-punk. More in the direction of bands such as Ultravox, The Stranglers, and Suicide than the Sex Pistols and the Ramones, due to the use of electronic keyboards, obsessive rhythms, tense harmonies, and scratching vocals emerging from generally dark sound textures. Chinese Restaurant was definitely ahead of its time, especially in terms of Italian rock. Housed in a gatefold sleeve.

DAL:UM Coexistence CD
Dal:um -- alongside peers Park Jiha, Jambinai and Leenalchi -- are at the forefront of new Korean music. The duo of Ha Suyean and Hwang Hyeyoung are virtuosos on two different types of traditional zithers, the gayageum and geomungo, and their music deftly navigates a plethora of contemporary influences: post-minimalism, experimental folk and abstract jazz. The sound of 21st century Seoul, where the boundaries of tradition are stretched and occasionally broken. Something magical is happening on the South Korean music scene, and it isn't K-Pop. Blow away the froth, and it is soon apparent that in the concert halls and clubs of Seoul and beyond, a febrile music scene is bubbling up. Ha Suyean and Hwang Hyeyoung grew up learning formal Korean gugak music, excelling on two different types of zithers: the gayageum and geomungo respectively. But these two young women soon became restless. Dal:um translates as "to keep pursuing something," a name which couldn't be more apposite. Suyean and Hyeyoung garnered wide acclaim and toured around the world with their debut album, Similar and Different (GB 112CD, 2021), and with their second album, Coexistence, they are taking another leap forward. Similar and Different was the sound of two musicians pushing and pulling one another. In Coexistence they have become one: one with one another, one with the wider world around them, one with life itself. It is music that is deeply personal, but personal in the way that it absorbs the life that surrounds the pair, finding peace, fear, drama and -- ultimately -- hope. Coexistence was forged at the tail end of the COVID pandemic. The duo, who first met as members of the Seoul Metropolitan Youth Traditional Music Ensemble, determined that this time round they would compose the whole album themselves. They took inspiration from the nature around them in Seoul, as well as from their tours in Europe, where long car journeys took them through natural landscapes that were strikingly different from home. "The pandemic made us realize how precious the things around us truly are," they explain. "As we wrote, we contemplated the value of living alongside other living things. The question that arose was: how can we harmoniously coexist with the life surrounding us? We wanted to encapsulate these thoughts in our music."

Formed in London in 1992 by singer and songwriter David Christian, Comet Gain were originally inspired by early Creation Records, Television Personalities and mod culture, drawing from the same ideals as Dexys, The Style Council and Vic Godard, and from the lineage of The Velvet Underground, The Byrds and the 13th Floor Elevators. In the ensuing years they have released eight albums on such esteemed labels as Wiiija, Kill Rock Stars, What's Your Rupture and Fortuna POP! that blend French New Wave with English kitchen-sink heart, Riot Grrrl with acid punk, and C86 with post-punk and Northern soul, somehow outliving their peers and in turn inspiring a younger generation of DIY musicians. On this record, their second album proper for Tapete Records, Comet Gain are David Christian (vocals, guitar), Ben Phillipson (guitar), Rachel Evans (vocals), Robin Christian (percussion), Anne Laure Guillain (keyboards) and Clientele bassist James Hornsey, with additional vocal, brass and keyboard contributions from producer Sean Read (Dexys, Edwyn Collins, Rockingbirds)."After Comet Gain's last LP Fireraisers Forever! which was a necessary exorcism of the Moron Era that has in fact only got worse -- they have put aside the fuzz drenched broken glass howls for a more immediate, toe-tapping rush of melody and intent. Sifted through from the library of songs David Christian Feck had been recording over the last couple years for Bandcamp LPs of homemade snap, crackle and POP and picked the best bunch and streamlined, improved and muscled up 8 or so and wrote new songs that would fit into a living thing - a jukebox of favorites playing somewhere in the background -- evergreen sixties UK pop with tough edges, soul stompers with a slight tear in the eye, Alex Chilton, Gene Clark, 'Sound Affects' Jam, euphoric melancholic folk rock, Hitchcock and Cope, The Fall when they made pop records, snarling freakbeat, yearning '80s baroque popness and jangled mornings and sad midnights -- an alchemy mix to make something direct with hooks and hope and heart-looking back to look forward and looking forward to be in the NOW? Truly this is one of the best of the Comet Gain LPs -- a concise mix of all their bags of tricks but in a way where everything fits like close friends that finish their own sentences -- pop singles, garage snarl, midnight ballads, morning floor shakers, folkrockers, obtuse angles and direct hits. FORSTER, ROBERT Strawberries LP
LP version. Picture one of the greatest living singer-songwriters in a kitchen. He is on holidays, he's just had a swim. His wife is out on the beach, and he finds himself faced with a bowl of irresistible strawberries. They're meant to be shared, of course, but their taste is "out of the ordinary," so he just can't help himself. Minutes later all of the delicious fruit are gone, but there's the germ of a song as the phrase "Someone ate all the strawberries" has just popped into Robert Forster's mind, sounding "so weird, but normal". Thankfully, he has taken his guitar with him. As the story goes, his wife Karin B?umler not only forgave her husband, she actually joined him on a duet of what was to become the title song to his ninth solo album. Robert Forster has perfected the art of being outr? in a least ostentatious way, from his time in the Go-Betweens to his solo career, now spanning almost three decades, interrupted only by the old band's reformation in 2000 which ended with his songwriting partner Grant McLennan's untimely death in 2006. Strawberries follows a recent spate of deluxe reissues of four of his older solo albums as well as the third and final volume of the career-spanning series of G Stands For Go-Betweens boxsets with a much awaited helping of new material. Next to admittedly bigger names such as Bob Dylan or Nick Cave, Robert Forster is the rare case of an artist with a celebrated past whose current work evokes genuine interest among a faithful fan base. As a straight-up personal song, "Strawberries" is a bit of a red herring in the context of this new album that, unusually for Forster, deals almost exclusively in observational character studies or, as the author would have it, "story songs". Louis Forster, by the way, also makes an impressive appearance on lyrical lead guitar in "Such a Shame." As his slapback echo vocals tuck into a rockabilly vibe, you can hear Forster enjoying the company of his Swedish backing band: producer Peter Mor?n (of Peter, Bj?rn and John fame) on guitar, Jonas Thorell on bass, and Magnus Olsson on drums, crucially augmented by Lina Langendorf on various woodwind instruments and Anna ?hman on keys. The album's monumental closing track "Diamonds" starts off as a cross between Lou Reed and Buffalo Springfield, then takes off via Astral Weeks into an (almost) Albert Ayler direction, with Lina Langendorf given free rein on the tenor sax and Forster himself relinquishing his trademark understatement for some unexpected outbursts of falsetto.

AYERS UBIQUITY, ROY Everybody Loves The Sunshine LP
Pressed on 180g vinyl. In Everybody Loves the Sunshine (1976), Roy Ayers seamlessly blends genres, creating a timeless sound that continues to influence musicians and DJs around the world. He makes the vibraphone the central instrument, a jazz-funk approach that defines his unique style. Over time, the album has remained an essential reference in Roy Ayers' discography and in the history of '70s Black music. Summertime soul classic! This album not only solidified Ayers as a key figure in the world of jazz-funk but also marked a milestone in soul music and contemporary jazz. It features a sophisticated blend of irresistible grooves, smooth melodies, and a unique sound that has endured over the years, becoming a reference for multiple generations of musicians and listeners. By the mid-'70s, Ayers had already established his reputation with his band, Roy Ayers Ubiquity, and his distinctive use of the vibraphone, which became his personal trademark. However, with this album, Ayers ventured into a smoother, more accessible sound, partly in response to the rise of disco music and the growing interest in more experimental sounds within the music scene. Throughout its ten tracks, Ayers managed to create a sonic atmosphere that evoked both the warmth of summer and the sophistication of jazz from that era, set against a backdrop of modern soul. The production was carried out by Ayers himself, along with his producer and friend, David R. Williams, and features the wonderful sound of Phillip Woo's Fender Rhodes and the powerful energy of the rest of the band, achieving an unmistakable authenticity and freshness. Some of its most well-known songs include the title track, "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," "The Golden Rod," and "The Third Eye," which quickly became classics of jazz-funk and soul. This album is crucial in Roy Ayers' career, as it demonstrates his ability to remain relevant and creative in an ever-changing music industry.

RHYTHM MACHINE Rhythm Machine LP
The Rhythm Machine is now available again to the musical public, legitimately reissued in its original packaging. Offering up brilliant soul, haunting ballads and high-energy mid-'70s funk, this tasty medley is served best in its entirety. Virtually impossible to find in its original edition, it is now reissued once again thanks to a collaboration with Now Again. Pressed on 180g vinyl. Indianapolis' legendary Rhythm Machine is one of the rare funk bands that transitioned between eras of funk's history seamlessly, creating awesome funk sides for a host of independent labels between the years of 1968 and 1976. Born out of cult Indy funk band The Highlighters' ashes, the Rhythm Machine was founded in the early '70s by bass player James Boone and guitarist James Brantley. Their self-titled and only LP, originally released in 1976, is a wild, super-groovy ride with tight band energy and a bunch of unexpected twists that keep things interesting from start to finish. At first, you might catch some Earth, Wind & Fire vibes -- deep basslines, funky beats, and killer horn sections -- but dig a little deeper and you'll find something a little looser, a little cooler. There's a smooth, jazzy undercurrent running through a lot of these tracks that gives the whole thing a fresh, off-the-beaten-path feel. Some songs drift into a dreamy, almost spacey zone -- think cosmic funk with a romantic twist. The production is silky, almost liquid-like, letting the guitars shimmer and the keys float. And when the soprano sax kicks in? Pure magic. It adds just the right bite to take the tracks up a notch. Perfect for late-night grooves, chill sessions, or anyone hunting for that hidden gem funk record with serious soul.

AGUDELO Y EL COMBO MODERNO, OSCAR Pa' Mi Muneca LP
This elusive and lesser-known 1966 collector's gem by ?scar Agudello y el Combo Moderno called Pa' mi mu?eca is an album devoted to recreating the strength of a musical genre that's been the soundtrack of Colombian life for decades and represents a milestone on the route cumbia had taken by 1966, when it was originally released on Discos Fuentes. It's exactly the kind of music that lights up a tamb? or a fandango circle on carnival night. First time reissue. Includes liner notes by genre expert Don Alirio. 180g vinyl. It is a rarity where the artist took an unexpected musical turn and performed several porros, paseaitos, gaitas, and cumbias, evoking the swaying motion and rolling waves of Colombia's Caribbean sound. It resonates with the echoes of a romantic minstrel laced with an unexpected richness of nuance, a hallmark of the cumbia sound. A dozen tracks, none of them new, but suffused with a consciousness that can be understood within the context of their time and with the personality of the artist bold enough to bring them to life. "Madre cumbia" opens the album with a festive, nostalgic mood, infused with the simple beauty and the electrifying beat of the tropics that immediately makes you want to get up and dance. It's a fantastic example of how to perform a song with passion and make the listener fall instantly in love with an album. "Pa' mi mu?eca," the title track, is a fast-paced paseaito that explores new paths that took a shortcut to the dance halls. A showstopper on the dance floor. "Est? como mango" is a porro-cumbia that charms with a rich tapestry of compliments, the calling card of many old-school tropical songs. "Cumbia de recuerdo," "Cumbia suave," "Cumbia de Santa Marta," are back-to-back cumbias. This is an album devoted to recreating the strength of a musical genre that's been the soundtrack of Colombian life for decades. It's a record dedicated to capturing good times, filled with simple dreams, steeped in joyful energy, and shining with the uninhibited flair, or better said, the quality of the sixties.

BATAAN, JOE Drug Story 7"
Here it is, for the first time on a 45, "Drug Story," the lost track by Joe Bataan. Pure Latin soul, recorded at the peak of the artist's career and released 50 years later! A must-purchase for those into Latin soul and funk. Joe Bataan's extensive discography was expanded in 2022 with the release of some old recordings from the King of Latin Soul that had never been previously published. After the success of his album Riot! (1968), Bataan had easy access to a studio whenever inspiration struck to record a new song sketch or even a complete track. Sometimes, he would finish the recording entirely and offer it in its final version to Fania for release. This usually worked, although on some occasions, the song was rejected. In the case of "Drug Story," the track was recorded without a clear final purpose, even though Bataan hoped it would become part of an album. When the Fania executives heard the result, they immediately rejected it, thinking it promoted drug use. The tapes were filed away and lost in oblivion until they ended up in a thrift store in New York. From there, they were rescued by a Latin music specialist and later sold, eventually making their way to the Vampisoul archives. The song was finally released in its entirety in 2022 on the LP Drug Story by Now Again. It features a long, slow vocal intro that evolves into a more up-tempo track with two very distinct parts, to the point that it almost feels like two different songs. It transports us to the best moment of Joe Bataan's career, with all of his classic ingredients, delivering a track as good as his most famous songs. Bataan himself takes on the lead vocals and piano, Bobby Rodr?guez handles the flute, sax, and bass, Pete 'Choki' Quintero plays the drums, and William Howes Jr. plays the electric guitar with wah-wah effects.

SEIDEL, WOLFGANG Krautrock Eruption: An Alternative History Of German Underground In The '60s And '70s Book
Krautrock as an escape from post-war Germany. Krautrock Eruption is a rousing counter-narrative to the usual depictions of Krautrock, written by Wolfgang Seidel, member of Conrad Schnitzler's band Eruption and co-founder of Ton Steine Scherben. Seidel's groundbreaking book, which includes unique historical photographs, paints a vivid picture of the old Federal Republic of Germany, with all of its contradictions and struggles. What is now celebrated as Krautrock emerged in this environment, and at the time was an attempt to contribute the soundtrack to the revolution. As a fly on the wall, Seidel recounts the squats, demos and first concerts of bands such as Cluster, Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel. Just as precisely and vividly, he recapitulates the influence of minimal music composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass, the origins of many Krautrock musicians in jazz and the role of the synthesiser. Wolfgang Seidel delivers a captivating account on Krautrock that dispels many of the founding myths of the first genuinely German pop culture, which above all did not want to be German. In addition, the book is supplemented by a discography of the 50 most important Krautrock records, written by music journalist and Krautrock expert Holger Adam. Translated from German by Alexander Paulick (member of influential D?sseldorf-based avant-garde band Kreidler). Paperback, 186 pages, 7.5 oz, dimensions: 7.5" x 5".

FAIRUZ Wahdon LP
2025 repress. Wewantsounds continues to pursue its exploration of great Lebanese music with the reissue of Wahdon, released in 1978 by legendary Middle Eastern diva Fairuz and recorded during the Abu Ali sessions (WWSLP 021LP). The album includes the Lebanese dancefloor cult classic, "Al Bostah". 1978 was a turning point for the Lebanese diva. The '70s had seen her rise as an international star, playing sold out concerts in the US and in Europe, and appearing on national TV in France. She had had a long-lasting artistic collaboration with her husband Assi Rahbani and his brother Elias (aka The Rahbani Brothers) who, together, had penned most of the singer's classics. In 1978, Assi who had suffered a brain hemorrhage in 1972 got weaker and the collaboration finally ended (together with their personal relationship). Their 22-year-old son Ziad took over Fairuz's musical reins and set to work on their first album together, Wahdon ("Alone"), serving as her mother's producer, composer and musical director. Wahdon typifies this key moment in Fairuz's career when she switched from traditional to more modern arrangements. The first side of the album encapsulates the more traditional side of the singer with such mesmerizing songs as "Habaitak Ta Neseet Al Naoum" (I Loved You So Much I Forgot To Sleep) or "Ana Indi Haneen" (I'm Nostalgic), filled with gorgeous Arabic strings and percussion. The second side though is a whole different affair. Recorded in Athens at the EMI Greece studio at the same time as the Abu Ali sessions, the two long tracks brings a hipper, contemporary funk and disco feel that has made the album such a collector's item with DJs and diggers around the world. Clocking at almost nine minutes "Al Bostah" (The Bus) tells the story a woman in love remembering a bus journey with her lover under a scorching heat, enhanced by an hypnotic up-tempo funkified disco beat, while "Wahdon" brings a slower and jazzier underlay to Fairuz's superb singing. These tracks shocked some of the diva's fans at the time but they've since passed the test of time and have become highly sought after. Whadon has since become both a classic Fairuz album and a cult Ziad Rahbani production that Wewantsounds is delighted to bring to a wider audience for the first time.

SAKAMOTO, RYUICHI Thousand Knives Of Ryuichi Sakamoto LP
2025 repress; LP version. Wewantsounds present a reissue of Ryuichi Sakamoto's first solo album Thousand Knives Of, originally released in 1978 on the sought-after Better Days label. Save for a small-scale release in 1982, this is the first time the album is being released on vinyl outside of Japan. 1978 was a key year for Japanese music. Haruomi Hosono, one of the country's most innovative musicians had just formed Yellow Magic Orchestra pursuing the sonic experimentation he had started with his solo album Paraiso. The album, recorded between December '77 and January '78, featured both Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi. Hosono quickly invited both musicians to form YMO but before the group could release their first album, Sakamoto entered the Nippon Columbia studios in April 1978 with a plan. Sakamoto had become an in-demand session musician after studying composition at the Tokyo University of Art and had played on many key albums of the time, such as Taeko Ohnuki's Sunshower (1977) and Tatsuro Yamashita Spacy (1977). This led to an invitation by Hosono to feature on Paraiso. A penchant for avant-garde and improvisation had gotten Sakamoto interested in electronic music early on, and with Thousand Knives he decided to get Hideki Matsutake on board as he had mastered the art of synth programming following a stint with Electronic Music pioneer Isao Tomita. Thousand Knives took several months to record as Sakamoto would be busy during the day with his session work and would only record at night. Named after Belgian-born poet Henri Michaux's description of a mescaline experience, the album is a reflection on how synthesizer technology might come to change the face of music. The first side conceived as a long suite opens with the title track and a recitation of the Mao Zedong poem "Jinggang Mountain" filtered through a vocoder, before morphing into a mid-tempo synthpop instrumental. It is followed by "Island Of Woods", a ten-minute track buzzing with insect-like synth sounds. Side one ends with "Grasshoppers", a beautiful acoustic piano melody underlined by a subtle synthesizer soundscape. Side two opens with "Das Neue Japanische Elektronische Volkslied", acknowledging the influence of the German sound spearheaded by Kraftwerk. The track features a mid-tempo metronomic beat skillfully intertwined with a Japanese folk sounding melody. The album ends with two catchy up-tempo synthpop tunes in the form of "Plastic Bamboo" and "The End Of Asia", which both became staples of YMO's and Sakamoto's live shows. YMO's sound included various influences from its three members but there is no denying Thousand Knives paved the way for the group's Computer Music sound. Remastered from the original tapes by renowned producer and engineer Seigen Ono.

VA Japanese Traditional Music: Koto - Shamisen CD
...Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai 1941. 2025 restock. The World Arbiter label presents 1941 recordings of the Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai -- masters of the koto and shamisen, heard with excerpts from theater and songs performed by many artists born in the Meiji period. They represent the earliest examples of ancient classical traditions. In the late 1930s, Japanese musicologists and experts completed years of work on a project to record their country's musical cultures, starting with ritualized shamanic traditions of the palace's gagaku, Buddhist chant, Noh theater, blind lute (biwa) players chanting medieval epics, a body of koto music, shamisens of kabuki dances, folk songs of workers, artisans, farmers, and children's songs. Five volumes, each with 12 78 rpm discs, comprised the leading performers of the time, many born into a Japan that newly opened to the West in 1868, taught by masters of an earlier isolated Japan. These recordings were meant to be given only to educational institutions and not sold. Right before starting their distribution, war broke out in 1941. Beate Sirota Gordon, age 22, accompanied the U.S. Army to Japan in 1946. She had grown up in Tokyo with her parents, Russian pianists whose pupils included Yoko Ono and her father. Beate secretly wrote a pioneering section on women's rights in Japan's post-war Constitution. During her mission, Donald Ritchie, a noted film historian, discovered a set of these recordings and gave them to her. Gordon presented them to Arbiter in the late 1990s. Aside from her copy, only one other complete set is known to have survived the war in Japan, as they were possibly destroyed in a warehouse bombing. The people of post-war Japan and the rest of the world now have the chance to hear these lost recordings of Japan's broad cultural legacy. On these recordings, one is struck by a sense of eternity belonging to a culture living in a mind-set of immortality and permanence, an ease buoying virtuosity and intricate musical forms, revealing a gripping authenticity that later performers hint at. This third of five discs contains significant examples of the koto and shamisen literature, dances from Kabuki and puppet theater traditions, many originating in the 1700s. Full descriptions are included in a lengthy booklet, while complete translations are on Arbiter's web site. Arbiter loves Japan and its arts, and is honored to revive lost master performers.

VA Japanese Traditional Music: Shamisen and Songs - Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai 1941 CD
2025 restock. This is the fourth volume in World Arbiter's Japanese Traditional Music series. The World Arbiter label presents 1941 recordings of the Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai -- masters of the shamisen. An extensive anthology of traditional Japanese music was created sometime around 1941-1942 by the Kokusai Bunka Shink?kai (KBS), International Organization for the Promotion of Culture. KBS was established under the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1934 for cultural exchange between Japan and foreign countries, representing genres such as gagaku (court music), sh?my? (Buddhist chants), n? (Noh medieval theater play), heikyoku (biwa-lute narratives of battles), shakuhachi (bamboo flute music), koto (long zither music), shamisen (three-stringed lute music), sairei bayashi (instrumental music for folk festivals), komori-uta (cradle songs, lullabies), warabe-uta (children songs), and riyou (min'you) (folk songs). Considering that 1941-1942 was a most daunting time for Japan's economy and international relationships with Asian and Western countries, it is remarkable that this excellent anthology of Japanese music was ever completed and published, as it contains judiciously selected pieces from various genres performed by top-level artists at that time. The KBS' recording project is of unique historical importance and culturally valuable as a document of musical practices in traditional Japanese genres during the wartime. Few copies of this collection exist in Japan. This CD restoration is taken from a set originally belonging to Donald Richie, a writer and scholar on Japanese culture (particularly on Japanese cinema), who had given it to Ms. Beate Sirota Gordon, known for her great contribution to the establishment of Japan's Constitution during the period of U.S. occupation after WWII. Gordon's father, Leo Sirota, a piano pupil of Busoni's, fostered many excellent Japanese pianists at the Tokyo Ongaku Gakko (Academy of Music, forerunner of present-day Music Department of Tokyo National University of The Arts) during 1928-1945. Shamisen, a three stringed lute, is said to have been imported from China through Okinawa into mainland Japan (Sakai, Osaka) in the latter half of the 16th century. It began to accompany popular songs and contributed in bringing about a variety of genres of shamisen music in the early 17th century. In the late Edo period (early 19th century), small-scale shamisen vocal genres such as ogie-bushi, hauta, utazawa, and kouta were performed by geisha in ozashiki chambers. This disc includes the shamisen music enjoyed in ozashiki. Jiuta music is mainly performed in houses or ozashiki chamber in the Kansai area and said to be the oldest shamisen music genre, born soon after the instrument's arrival in Japan. Kumiuta (combined pre-existent songs) music is also heard on this disc. Full descriptions are included in a 36-page booklet in English and Japanese.

VA Bali 1928, Vol. II Tembang Kuna: Songs from an Earlier Time CD
2025 restock. Vol. II in a five-disc series of 1928 Balinese recordings features Balinese vocal music, the first release of these recordings since they were first pressed to 78 rpm discs in 1929, the only commercially released recordings of music made in Bali before World War II. Originally recorded by a team from the German labels Odeon and Beka on a 1928-29 expedition to Bali and intended for a Balinese public that lacked any discs of its own music, many of these records have been reduced to single remaining copies by the ravages of time -- when the labels' (European) merchant in Bali destroyed the original discs in a fit of rage due to a complete lack of sales. Now, after a decade of global sleuthing, World Arbiter has located a surviving copy of every known vocal disc that escaped destruction, even one slumbering under a pile at an east Balinese raja's palace. The unaccompanied singing has been restored to the point that the listener is practically sitting inside the masters' throats to experience their microtonal miracles. The lyrics, fully translated, some from the archaic Old Javanese language and included in the liner notes, reveal intensely urgent erotic, mystical and romantic meanings. These extensive notes are supplemented with a 110-page PDF including an in-depth essay by Edward Herbst, contained on the disc and available online. Arbiter will continue to release its complete recovery of 111 three-minute sides, with five discs planned for the series, and a complete anthology to follow. Fully funded by a grant from The Andrew Mellon Foundation. Includes performances by Ida Bagus Oka Kerebuak, Ida Boda, Ni Dayu Mad? Rai, Ida Bagus Ngurah, Ni Lemon, and the duo of Idu Bagus Wayan Buruan & Ida Mad? Tianyar.
