LARD Power Of Lard CD
"Lard's Power Of Lard is over forty-four minutes of music by Jello Biafra and Ministry! Originally released in 1989.""Jello Biafra and Ministry teamed up for this slab of wax. The title track is great. Imagine Ministry playing thrash, that's what it is. 'Hellfudge' sounds like Flipper meets Jerry Lee Lewis, the lyrics take a nice roundhouse power swing at Jimmy Swaggart. 'Time To Melt' is a cool dirge / death rock type of song, but it's too fucking long (almost twenty-five minutes). Overall this record is really good and Biafra fans won't be disappointed." --Thrashead, Flipside (Summer 1989)

BRUJERIA El Patron 7"
"Mexican grindcore fugitives who don't need no stinkin' badges pay tribute to the late Pablo Escobar and the Menendez Brothers. Originally released in 1994 by the Mexican extreme metal band rumored to be led by Fear Factory's Dino Cazares (guitar) and Raymon Herrera (drums). It was also rumored to include various members from Faith No More, Down By Law, and Napalm Death. Brujeria is a deathgrind metal band from Mexico formed in 1989. They are a group from Latin America notorious for the violent and the extreme. They are infamous for the terms 'Matando G?eros,' 'La Migra,' 'Marijuana y Brujerizmo.' Roadrunner records refused to release this! Why? Because it mentioned DRUGS! Gore? Debauchery? Satanismo galore? No problem! But This? Too much! Truly heartfelt tributes, as only Brujeria can put into words, for Pablo Escobar and the Menendez brothers. If you go out and pick up one 7" tribute to Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria (leader of the Medellin Cartel) and the Menendez brothers, then make sure this is the one you get. Or else. Fully authorized by Juan Brujo."

SHELDON, JANE Flowermuscle CD
"Chamber opera composer and singer Jane Sheldon goes big on Flowermuscle, yet every measure is hushed enough to capture a whisper. Using Rainer Maria Rilke's poetry, she explores the corners of a sonic space that feels both powerful and delicate, unfolding his words as sound expands in many directions all at once. With a pedigree including shows with John Zorn at the Louvre, Lincoln Center and the Barbican, and having recently completed a run of Sydney Chamber Opera's wild, new Gilgamesh, Sheldon brings the tools of the avant-garde to explore the lush sensuality of transcendent experience, working in close collaboration with Australian audio whiz Bob Scott. Flowermuscle's songs are colorful and diverse, in stark contrast to the super restrained palette of her last album which was also led by Rilke's poems. 'I felt with the last one that holding back was the natural response to what he wrote,' Sheldon says. 'We realized early on with this new album that we didn't want to play it safe this time and needed to push things. I'm most interested in the felt experience of altered states: I am a tree, lived in the privacy of those experiences, but Flowermuscle is much more about their vastness, about the possibility of feeling that you're in erotic resonance with everything else in nature.'"

EASTWOOD, ALAN JAMES Seeds 2LP
First time vinyl reissue, expanded and deluxe double gatefold 140g double vinyl, remastered audio with restored artwork. Alan James Eastwood's glorious Seeds is a certified folk-funk lost-classic. By the mid-1970s, Eastwood's musical career was pretty much over and he was almost unknown except among deep heads, amongst whom he would gain cult status. Original copies of the 1971 vinyl release of Seeds exchange hands for high sums. This expanded 2LP contains an extra record, collecting nine rare non-album singles and is presented in a gatefold sleeve complete with freshly commissioned liner notes courtesy of Paul Hillery (Folk Funk & Trippy Troubadours). With the long overdue deluxe reissue of this prized artefact, Be With hope to finally shine a light on the unheralded genius of Alan James Eastwood. Alan James 'Bugsy' Eastwood was a renowned musician and singer who came to prominence in the late 1960s with The Exception, an unsung but excellent band from Birmingham. The Exception released many singles, the first featuring friend Robert Plant on tambourine, before an album, The Exceptional Exception. However, by this time, Bugsy was feeling constrained and restless; he left the band within weeks of the release. Having vanished from the scene, he was honing a deeper, introspective edge to his songwriting. His demos found their way to the sound engineer and producer Mike Cooper at Pan Music Studios in Denmark Street. Loving what he heard, Eastwood soon entered a recording session with Cooper. The session was just Alan, his guitar and harmonica and -- by all accounts -- it was remarkable. With the songs, the voice and such an exceptional talent, it was hard to go wrong. Top-flight session musicians were added to the roster to complete the sound, with Byron Lye Fook (father of musician Omar) on drums, bassist Mike Ward, Brian Pickles on marimba and jazz drummer Chris Karan on tabla and percussion. Recorded in a matter of days in Pan's small 8-track studio, they carefully added overdubs, rhythm sections and four string sessions arranged by Hawkins. Also featuring backing vocals from Marilyn Powell and jazz singer Josephine Stahl. Mastering for this special double vinyl edition was overseen by Be With regular Simon Francis and it was cut by the esteemed Cicely Balston at Abbey Road Studios to be pressed in the Netherlands by Record Industry. The original artwork has been lovingly brought back to life at Be With HQ, with the addition of passionately written liner notes specially for this landmark reissue by none other than Paul Hillery. RIYL Nick Drake, Rodriguez, Richie Havens.

CONNORS, NORMAN Mr. C LP
Norman Connors' Mr. C is a masterclass in sophisticated modern funk and boogie-infused soul that was way ahead of its time. Originally released in 1981, the album finds the renowned jazz drummer/producer at a creative crossroads, boldly diving deep into street-level boogie-funk without losing his soulful, jazzy touch. What once might have puzzled jazz purists now delights soul/funk aficionados; it has quietly become a cult favorite and now, nearly 45 years later, Mr. C sounds fresher than ever. Brimming with infectious heavy funk, lush arrangements and soul-stirring performances, it's an album that flirts with perfection, ensuring its enduring significance in the boogie/jazz-funk-soul canon. From its opening moments, Mr. C makes one thing clear: this is Norman Connors at his funkiest. The majority of the album is a straight-up party: think dancefloor-ready beats complemented by punchy horn riffs and slick early-'80s boogie vibes. There's heavy use of synths and drum-machines, demonstrating Connors' gleeful embrace of contemporary funk trends. Each track shines in uniquely thrilling fashion, showcasing Connors' versatility and happy knack for blending genres whilst crafting unforgettable melodies. Lush string accents and horn stabs weave through funky basslines, while the vocals (handled by a young Beau Williams) soar with gospel-tinged emotion. Over four decades later, it endures as a masterpiece. The fusion of Caribbean rhythm elements into an R&B context demonstrates Connors' willingness to experiment with global sounds while keeping things soulful and danceable. Bringing a real quiet storm swagger, "Sing a Love Song" slows the tempo ever so slightly into a sexy, swaying jazz-funk gem, featuring a young Glenn Jones on lead vocals. The arrangement is elegant, built on warm keys and an undeniable groove. The celestial "Love's In Your Corner" is all about soulful uplift. Featuring the legendary Jean Carn's powerhouse vocals soaring over a brass-kissed driving funk, it's an R&B burner. On release, Mr. C flew under the radar but time has been exceptionally kind to this record. DJs, collectors and soul connoisseurs alike have since rediscovered its magic. As ever, this crucial reissue has been lovingly remastered by Simon Francis, cut by engineer of the year Cicely Balston at Abbey Road Studios and pressed to perfection by Record Industry in Holland. Norman Connors was something truly extra. He was a visionary. And Mr. C is proof.

KASPAR, JONATHAN Twofold: Ignite (Color Vinyl) 12"
Color vinyl version. Known for his ability to create captivating, emotionally charged techno, Jonathan Kaspar returns to Cocoon Recordings with his third contribution Twofold. One, yet simultaneously two releases that once again showcase his extraordinary talent through condensed techno with a pinch of trance, weaving together driving rhythms and atmospheric textures in a way that feels innovatively progressive. Twofold: Ignite -- Drifting hypnotically, this might be the most fitting way to describe what Jonathan Kaspar unfolds here. The rolling percussion grooves seamlessly intertwine with the siren's spectral tone, gradually blending into the alchemy of "Yah" as it erupts into the mix. By the time the peak arrives, there's a raw intensity in the air -- the track seems to bend and stretch then drills and twists until it cracks, but never loses its sense of purpose and remains anchored in its deep, pulsating groove. On the flip side, "Silver Lines" stands as a counterpart, offering a contrast in both sound and atmosphere. With its minimalist arrangement, the track first nestles in gently, lulling the listener into its world -- only to tighten its grip as a synth sequence gradually opens its cut-off filter, slicing through the calm, drilling into the mind, and shifting the mood from tranquil to tense.

KASPAR, JONATHAN Twofold: Fade (Color Vinyl) 12"
Color vinyl version. Known for his ability to create captivating, emotionally charged techno, Jonathan Kaspar returns to Cocoon Recordings with his third contribution Twofold. One, yet simultaneously two releases that once again showcase his extraordinary talent through condensed techno with a pinch of trance, weaving together driving rhythms and atmospheric textures in a way that feels innovatively progressive. Twofold: Fade -- Rooted in a minimalist rhythmic structure, "Power" takes listeners in a new direction, steadily building momentum as its energy billows upwards, with the intensity never wavering throughout. A large, dented, tinny tuba sounds imposingly as Jonathan blows louder and louder into the old thing, its raw, metallic tone instantly commanding attention. What an explosion in the break, leading listeners into a wild, almost chaotic energy, before Kaspar's meticulous attention to detail ensures that the shimmering synths feel perfectly placed, guiding to the absolute freak-out moment. After all the insanity, Jonathan Kaspar leads into a melodic, trancy after-hours mood with "1993," bringing a sense of release after the wild ride of the previous tracks. What a successful closing track to this outstanding release. With its melodic trance influences, it offers a soothing, almost nostalgic atmosphere, bringing a sense of calm and closure, a perfect moment of introspection and euphoria as the EP winds down.

LO YO YO, THE The Lo Yo Yo LP
"London's The Lo Yo Yo was conceptualized by John 'Alig' Pearce in 1984 after his primary group, the deservedly legendary Family Fodder, went dormant. Soon enough a few others were enlisted to round out the quartet, including Mick Hobbs of The Work and Officer! fame, alongside friends Joey Stack and Carrie Brooks. The Lo Yo Yo took elements from their other groups and, in the tradition of somewhat like-minded acts like The Raincoats, Naffi and Amos & Sara, added a strong dub/reggae element. Shortly before their lone studio LP, which was recorded by Charles Bullen of This Heat fame, the band self-recorded a demo tape at home on an eight-track reel to reel, reissued here on vinyl for the first time by Concentric Circles. It is a wonder of DIY production with a rich and layered sound that belies their humble means. Although about half of the songs on the demo would wind up being re-recorded for the studio LP, the demo versions are radically different from what is heard on their proper album. There is a feeling of intensity to the demo that was missing from the LP, which had a noticeably cleaner fidelity and more subdued playing. Here the band plays with true force and determination, with Stack's socialist leaning lyrics taking on an extra sharp bite. Unafraid to show off their skills at writing irresistibly catchy pop songs, things are carried on by Alig's big bass sound and a barrage of polyrhythmic dueling drums and percussion. The Lo Yo Yo tapped into a truly special sound, perfectly exemplified on these recordings. Just when you think you've completed the puzzle of arty, dubby '80s post-punk, a stray piece is found on the proverbial floor, just waiting to be picked up. If you aren't dancing around the room by the end of this album, you need to visit the foot doctor. Concentric Circles is delighted to bring this barely heard, infectious album from The Lo Yo Yo to modern audiences for the first time."

KINGA Sexy Boy 12"
"Kinga struts to Dark Entries with Sexy Boy, a steamy Canadian pop gem. Inspired by gender-bending pop stars of the 1980s like Boy George and Janet Jackson, a young Tomas Fussey aka Kinga ditched his 'schoolboy appearance' to adopt an edgier, androgynous style. Immersed in Calgary nightlife, he became acquainted with sexy synthpop and disco songs like Madonna's 'Everybody,' Divine's 'Native Love,' and the Flirts' 'Passion' -- songs which still linger in his mind. In 1988 he teamed up with keyboardist Dan Madison and veteran producer Bob Gallo to make Elevator Operator and Sexy Boy. Kinga was surprised when the B-side 'Sexy Boy' garnered substantial radio play from CFNY in Toronto. In 1989, Amok Records backed a new 'Late Night Dance Mix' version of 'Sexy Boy.' Almost every part was re-recorded or remade, including Kinga's vocals. The new version surprised Kinga with its slick production and moody atmosphere. Sales were disappointing, but these deeper house-inflected grooves feel like the sound of our current moment. This release of Sexy Boy includes five different mixes, including the original 7" mix, three versions from the 12", and the previously unreleased 'TV Mix.' Sexy Boy comes sleeved in a reproduction of the original artwork and includes an insert with liner notes and lyrics, as well as an 8x10 glossy press photo of the sexy boy himself."

DALE, JON Last Blues CD
In Last Blues, De la Catessen presents a mysterious folio of sonic snapshots, as much recaptured as composed, by Jon Dale's project, Moth, in Adelaide in the late '90s and early '00s. Listeners are invited to tune in to these liminal frequencies, to observe and inhabit them, and relish the glowing sensual overdrive of their manifestation. From the ready means and at-handedness of guitar, amp, and tape, a congruous but diverse selection of unnamed tracks emerge -- musical moments borrowed from oblivion with the as yet unfulfilled good intention of returning them. Their sounds evoke abstract polaroids of winter seascapes flecked with spare, brittle detail, or the scaly-winged flutterings of elusive nocturnal insects. Here, a homely hum like a vacuum cleaner on sunny childhood's weekend morning; there, suburban power lines buzzing gently in the mist. The last track of Last Blues is like a reverent vision of lava-flow for harmonium, the slow-motion eruption of a single chord, which echoes in the mind for hours. Last Blues comes from somewhere that doesn't exist anymore, and shows listeners something that may never have happened there."Jon Dale collapses old dichotomies (such as organic vs. inorganic and heavy vs. light) into a pure horizon of tone with only guitar and a little harmonium. Sonically, it makes me think of a middle point between if Organum snuck into the studio to remix Glenn Branca, and what I imagine the electric synapses firing off in Raymond Roussel's brain would've sounded like if committed to wax cylinder. Which is to say, it sounds rad." --Ben Chasny, Six Organs Of Admittance

DALE, JON Theatre CD
"It's music where nothing happened. It's the kind of music somebody might write in Adelaide, Australia. Nothing happened." --Morton FeldmanTheatre is De la Catessen's second venture into the archive of Jon Dale. Originally released in a tiny CD-r edition of 50 copies on Tristes Tropiques in 2019, Theatre now reappears in an edition of 150 glass-mastered CDs. Theatre sees Jon Dale eschewing the hearthwarm drones of his previous album on de la Catessen, Last Blues, and dwelling upon an elusive aural concept: a limbo. Theatre hums with an occupied silence, heightened by scattered expectant sounds: a door opens or closes; muffled voices murmur nearby. As almost nothing continues to happen, the listener occupying the silence seems to hover at the edge of (non)existence. It's tempting to classify Theatre as a purely conceptual listening experience, or to compare it to listening to someone who is in the quiet act of listening to something else, just out of earshot. But at its heart, Theatre is a simple and elegant manifestation of the dichotomy that dynamizes minimalism: how little of something -- versus how much of nothing -- must be.

SMITH, RAYMOND CHAPMAN Amir Farid Performs Traktat Vom Licht: Piano Music Of Raymond Chapman Smith CD
"Light is the vehicle of the community -- of the universe. All that is visible clings to the invisible. That which can be heard to that which cannot -- that which can be felt to that which cannot. Perhaps the thinkable to the unthinkable. Like ourselves, the stars float between illumination and darkening in turn -- but even in the state of darkness we are granted, as they are, a consoling, hopeful glimmer of companion stars that are luminous and illuminated." --Novalis, Traktat vom LichtAmir Farid returns to De la Catessen Records with the premiere recordings of Traktat vom Licht/Variations on a Minuet by Mozart -- the second volume in an ongoing survey of endearingly quixotic piano music by Adelaidean composer Raymond Chapman Smith. In this new collection, following on from 2023's Nachschriften/L?ndler (DLC 013CD), pianist Amir Farid sheds further light on a fruitful period of Chapman Smith's work, in which he utters in a uniquely mellifluous voice a beautiful old language recognized by so many but spoken by so few. Chapman Smith's musical journey, through Sydney's experimental scene of the early '70s, to his study with Australian modernist doyen Richard Meale, and his leadership of the notorious ACME New Music through the '90s, has led him to -- of all places -- the green pastures of nineteenth century German romanticism, where he invites listeners to join him in thoughtful spiritual contentedness through the current phase of his craft. The title of Chapman Smith's 26-part Traktat vom Licht is borrowed from a cycle of 26 poetic-scientific-metaphysical fragments by Novalis, a crucial voice in the formulation of the first phase of German Romanticism. Written in 2006 as an acknowledgement of the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, Variations on a Minuet by Mozart takes the theme from the first piece in Mozart's catalogue -- his K1, written when he was five years old -- and turns it through a set of twelve variations.

BENAUD TRIO Oblivion CD
Benaud Trio celebrate their 20th anniversary year with the release of Oblivion on De la Catessen Records. Oblivion is their sixth studio album since bursting into the world in 2005 with the irresistible fusion of playfulness and professionalism that has characterized their career. Oblivion boasts all the pizazz that made Benaud Trio's previous albums like Mixtape (ABC Classic) and Bohemian Rhapsody (Melba Recordings) so popular, framed by a thoughtful selection of pieces that showcases them at their electrifying best. Chick Corea's modern classic "Spain" leaps out of the timeless classical melody of Rodrigo's "En Aranjeuz con tu Amor," in a fiery arrangement for piano trio by Nicholas Buc. "Closer" by Mark Isaacs was originally created for jazz quintet, and appears here in a warm and lyrical adaptation that sees Benaud Trio carrying its smooth sensibilities into the classical realm. Their readings of Piazolla's "Cuatro Estaciones Porte?as" and "Oblivion" are a smoldering account of his stylistic crucible of tango, jazz, and classical music. Benaud Trio have long been known for their alchemy onstage, fusing disparate qualities together: endurance and youthfulness; sincerity and lightness; playfulness and insight. In Oblivion, Benaud Trio are in their element, exploring fusion of the musical kind, through pieces by composers who share some of the same rare qualities as them.

HANCOCK, HERBIE Takin' Off (Clear Vinyl) LP
Originally released in 1962, Takin' Off marked Herbie Hancock's debut as a leader, showcasing his balance of sophistication and accessibility. While influenced by Horace Silver's hard bop, Hancock's style was lighter, more cerebral, and adventurous in its harmonies. The album includes the iconic "Watermelon Man," which became a jazz standard after its hit cover by Mongo Santamaria. Other highlights include the introspective "Alone and I," the minor-key "The Maze," and the bluesy "Empty Pockets." Backed by Freddie Hubbard, Dexter Gordon, Butch Warren, and Billy Higgins, this debut laid the foundation for Hancock's future innovations in jazz.

ISHIBASHI/JIM O'ROURKE, EIKO Pareidolia LP
"Eiko Ishibashi and Jim O'Rourke toured Europe for two weeks in 2023, a wonderful passage through France, Switzerland, Italy and Ireland; Pareidolia, the duo's fifth collaborative release, is a remix made up of resonances from those shows. The movement of sound in each performance and the relationships of sound between them; a dynamic medley of color and shape to pulse through earbuds, speaker cones and the air immediately surrounding you. Improvisation is the preferred collaborative mode for Eiko and Jim. They both prepare separately, without discussing anything beforehand. The dialogue in the moment determines the performance; anything that takes place is a possible point of departure, allowing for a unique experience each time they play. These 2023 shows marked the first time Jim and Eiko had played together outside Japan. Perhaps the flow of parts unpacked from their respective computers was inspired by the experiences of the tour: the nature of the assembled audience, the quality of the meal on the day at hand. Additionally, Eiko played flute and they both played a bit of harmonica intermittently throughout the performances. These live acoustic signals were routed back to the hard drives, to provide further material to play with -- and as they traveled, recordings of the previous nights' shows were among the materials for the next performance. With all this to play with, there was much fun to be had every night. Pareidolia's final mix is one further rearrangement of the elements -- comping -- say, a bit of Jim from Paris against Eiko in Dublin for a minute, before bringing them both back into the same room for a spell before another set of interactions comes into play. The choices and edits represented here make yet another unique dialogue, as well as a kind of "best" version of what they were doing on the tour. The sense of inevitability in the parts as they flow together might suggest structure; happily, this occurs without Eiko and Jim really committing to anything of the sort. Their available sound sources could present as a hot-wired noise onslaught, with all faders up full. Endless possible interpretations to be had on either side of the experience! This is one of several ways that the LP title and sequence of song titles come into play. Listeners hearing something more should have a good look in the mirror and perhaps consider the old saying: 'Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.' It could only help."

AMBARCHI/JOHAN BERTHLING/ANDREAS WERLIIN, OREN Ghosted III LP
"The third time's the charm! Or perhaps -- the third time's another charming excursion into the seemingly infinite universe of rhythm spontaneously created whenever guitarist Oren Ambarchi, bassist Johan Berthling, and percussionist Andreas Werliin plug in together. However you choose to look at it, several years into their collaborative endeavor, and a little more than a year on from Ghosted II, Ambarchi, Berthling and Werliin are back with a new finding, constituting fresh developments of their sound -- if not their album-titling ambition (in other words, if you can't guess it's called Ghosted III, you're just not paying enough attention!). In actuality, the sound of this trio has been all about new developments since they first started playing together. That's something to be simply expected when dropping the tonearm on any of their records, which is a very nice thing. There's also something to be said for constancy, especially when it produces such stimulating variations of tone and mood within the trio format. So, all good -- since there wasn't anything broke, there was no need to fix it. Instead, just do it again. With that credo, Ambarchi, Berthling and Werliin returned to Stockholm's Studio Rymden to continue the incredible standard of capture that distinguished both Ghosted and Ghosted II. Although they took more studio time than ever before (three whole days!), Ghosted III's new development is an increased immediacy in their performances, something a little looser and wilder than their first two albums -- and something, no doubt, that's been developed by their encounters during the several dozen-plus gigs played since their debut. Thus, their ability to lock in and focus, hanging on to the smallest of details, is here enhanced by an expansive lightness of being. Such potentially polar skill sets could well make for uneven chemistry -- but in the hands of these three, a sparkling variety of new jams occurs. They seem to be available to try anything these days, at times playing with the exuberance of prog-rockers or new-wave popsters, alongside the eternal energies of their established styles: ambient neo-jazz, postkraut, minimal funk. In the end, their shared instinct shapes the varied emissions into structure reaching ever further into the ether -- giving Ghosted III a singular quality belonging only to the trio that is Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling and Andreas Werliin."

BEACH, MICHAEL Big Black Plume LP
"On his fifth LP, Big Black Plume, Melbourne-based and Californian-born musician Michael Beach reveals the vitalizing power of connection in an often-hostile world. Equally informed by the songwriting of Bill Fay and Peter Laughner, the minimalism of Tony Conrad and Terry Riley, and the rock and roll heart of the Goner Records roster, Big Black Plume provides deliberate compositions adorned with genuine madness. The songs on this album range from spare, textural ballads to spiraling psychedelic overtures connected to a propulsive cosmic pulse. Building on Beach's network from over twenty years of touring, engineering, and production work (in Melbourne, SF, and LA), and employment in independent touring venues, Big Black Plume features contributions from a murderers' row of talent. Produced by Beach and Gareth Liddiard (Tropical Fuck Storm), the record includes Dirty Three guitarist Mick Turner, The Necks bassist Lloyd Swanton, Tropical Fuck Storm members Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin, folk artist Leah Senior, Oren Ambarchi collaborator Joe Talia, and Comets on Fire's Utrillo Kushner, among others. Big Black Plume was recorded over four different sessions. Phil Manley (Trans Am) engineered the album's two hardest-rocking songs, 'Poison Dart' and 'Sick Century,' at El Studio in San Francisco, with Kushner on drums. A second session at Sydney's Golden Retriever (engineered by Tim Whitten) captured the album's improv and avant-inflected ballads, 'No One Knows Any Better' and 'I'm Gonna Need Ya,' creating a special resonance through the interplay of Swanton's subtly winding acoustic bass and Talia's abstract but propulsive drums. Beach is a masterful songwriter -- he writes songs as seen from 10,000 feet, from 6 feet under -- from every angle. The songs here aren't stick-and-poke songs that will dry and fade on the skin, aimless prayers for jams; Beach has been making deliberate things for decades. Big Black Plume is a record about connections, mercurially curated, transforming individual contributions into something strikingly communal."

SUN RA ARKESTRA Lights On A Satellite (Color Vinyl) 2LP
"Marshall Allen 100 years jubilee edition. Limited to 1500 copies. Orange and magenta transparent vinyl with bonus track. As if from the farthest reaches of space, a tremendous positive energy has come to us via Light on a Satellite: It is Sun Ra's music, played by his Arkestra, more than 30 years after the legendary band founder's earthly demise -- or, in other words, after his reported ascent to Saturn. Under the direction of Marshall Allen, the NEA Jazz Master (2025) and multi-instrumentalist, who celebrated his 100th birthday on May 25, 2024, Sun Ra's big band has arrived safely in the 21st century, after traveling Sun Ra's space ways for almost 70 years. This album pays tribute to the lifetime achievement of Marshall Allen, who has led the Sun Ra Arkestra since 1993. Recorded in Studio A at New York's Power Station on June 16, 2024, the album celebrates the mastery of the exceptional musician Marshall Allen as a multi-instrumentalist, arranger, bandleader, teacher, and guardian of Sun Ra's unique legacy. Perhaps this day will one day become part of the collective jazz memory, for what we are experiencing here is a simultaneity of the non-simultaneous, projected into the future, a time machine traveling through 100 years of jazz, out of the free approach of the Sun Ra Arkestra and in its signature groove right into the heart of swing -- with a century-old jazz master as captain. That in itself is a superlative. We are even more inspired by the power with which the virtuoso Marshall Allen continues his life's vocation. As a tribute to the life's work of Marshall Allen, IN+OUT Records invited the Sun Ra Arkestra into the studio with 24 musicians in the largest possible line-up, with the goal of documenting the music in its polyphony and expansion in space and time in the best possible way. It is not only the variety of instruments used, but also the fact that musicians from four generations come together with a repertoire that spans 100 years of jazz history."

"Los Angeles band Oog Bogo (featuring former Meatbodie Kevin Boog) have released an EP and an LP for Ty Segall's God? label -- now their second LP arrives via In The Red. Cowgirls goes off-road, so buckle up, because with songwriter Kevin Boog and engineer Eric Bauer behind the wheel of John Dwyer and Bauer's studio Discount Mirrors -- anything can happen. In March of 2024, John Hodge stomped the four-to-the-floor on drums and percussion, as Boog swung back and forth between mutated melodies and total auditory annihilation, vocally and instrumentally. Together, the two swerved hazardously through several roads of smoldering sonic debris. But where does this road lead now? Veering a sharp left turn off the course of Oog Bogo's previous genres? Sure. A new, unmatched lineup consisting of Gabe Flores (on lead guitar/ backing vocals), Julian Betts (bass guitar) and Grant Snyder (drums)? Accelerating forward, Oog Bogo's Wipers reject the sorrows of darkened skies that hover over Los Angeles. Monolithic guitar tones grind like freight Trux, flanking you in stereoscopic bliss, as bass metronomically demands your movement alongside their pounding percussive speedometer. Oog Bogo's harmonies of the lost highways weave you through LA, and siren to you an all-but-haunting message: that rock and roll is ALIVE, and now, with Oog Bogo's second LP Cowgirls on In The Red Records, you're in the front seat of their Chrome choir. Their momentum has only just begun. So don't get the blues. Giddy-up."

KOCH/MARTIN SCHUTZ/FREDY STUDER/EL NIL TROOP, HANS Heavy Cairo Traffic CD
"Heavy Cairo Traffic is the multilayered audio documentation of a collaboration of highly acclaimed European jazz improvisers with Egyptian folk-musicians. Hans Koch (clarinet, saxophone), Martin Sch?tz (cello) and Fredy Studer (drums), three of the internationally most important Swiss musicians of improvised music, have given some public concerts with the El Nil Troop, a kind of pool of outstanding representatives of traditional Egyptian music. 1995 the three Swiss musicians traveled again to Cairo for a recording with the El Nil Troop. The Egyptian-Swiss encounter was realized with mutual artistic respect. The result isn't another questionable and cheap fusion in the trendy 'World Music' category. Both sides could articulate their own peculiarity and leave themselves enough freedom. The recording in a Cairo studio was followed by a second phase, in which Koch-Sch?tz-Studer creatively tackled the material from the Cairo recording sessions. New elements were added and subtly mixed with the earlier ones, always bearing in mind that the Egyptian music should not be repressed or misused. The end result is a versatile, exciting music, an enigmatic music full of surprises. The Egyptian music, vocal or instrumental, rhythmically free or bound is in phases definitely at the forefront. The trio Koch-Sch?tz-Studer never stops to amaze with a wealth of musical ideas. Heavy Cairo Traffic: a fascinating reverence to the Egyptian folk music. And at the same time a reflection by the trio Koch-Sch?tz-Studer of musical and non-musical impressions of Cairo."

ROMEO & THE UPSETTERS, MAX War Ina Babylon (Golden Vinyl) LP
"Jackpot Records presents a re-issue of this revered reggae album, 1976s War Ina Babylon by Max Romeo & The Upsetters. Originally released on Island Records, the album is considered one of the greatest Reggae albums of all time and was a massive influence on the UK punk movement that was just starting to bubble to the surface. The record's incredible power belies an unlikely partnership between one of the world's greatest producers (and experimenters in sound), Lee "Scratch" Perry, and vocalist Max Romeo (who by 1976 had performed on over 120 7" singles) Romeo had been transforming from his 'rude' records to writing lyrics with social themes as the era in Jamaica was rife with poverty, gangs, and politically motivated killings. As he was looking to produce protest music at its most powerful alongside music that would never leave the listener's souls, Lee Perry and Max Romeo started collaborating together. Recorded in two weeks in 1976, utilizing Lee Perry's kitchen sink production, War Ina Babylon is considered part of Lee Perry's 'holy trinity' Black Ark produced LPs released by Island Records (Junior Murvin's Police and Thieves and The Heptones' Party Time being the other classics LPs in the trinity), this LP continues to find new fans with every passing generation. MONTGOMERY, ROY Temple IV 2LP
2025 repress. "This is the first vinyl issue of Temple IV, arguably Roy Montgomery's finest solo album, originally released in 1996 on CD. The original album has been enhanced with two newer tracks that constitute side four of the album. Montgomery states: 'The two new tracks recorded in 2018 were about asking the question 'Can you step into the same river twice?' Heraclitus said you cannot. I say you can.' From the original press release: Few recording artists have aligned the quantity and quality of their releases as well as New Zealand singer/guitarist Roy Montgomery has in 1995. Beginning with Kranky's release of the soundtrack for an imaginary film That That Is... Is(Not) by Montgomery's duo Dissolve early in the year, a series of superb albums and singles have been issued by a variety of labels across the world. Each one of them is a must have. Most recently, the Drunken Fish label released a collection of pastoral drones entitled Scenes From The South Island, singles have appeared on the Roof Bolt and gyttja labels, and further singles are scheduled with Ajax, Siltbreeze, and others. Temple IV is the first solo recording by Roy Montgomery on Kranky. The album was recorded by Montgomery on a four-track tape deck and then thickened up with monophonic moog. The tracks on the album are thick with interwoven guitar lines and moog drone, inspired by the Guatemalan rain forests and the mysterious ruins of the temple and ruins Montgomery visited there."

GRIGONI/PAN AMERICAN, MICHAEL New World, Lonely Ride CD
"Michael Grigoni and Pan American present their first collaboration. The album's title, New World, Lonely Ride, gestures toward its meditative orientation. The duo offers a series of reflections on the zeitgeist of our present moment, the spirit of the age: the isolation and loneliness that continues to echo in the wake of the pandemic; the fractures that mar political discourse; the uncertainty that has stamped itself on the future of democracy. The vast geography of America and the absence of a common ground, a shared political vision, have contributed to the affective landscape of contemporary American life -- of what it feels like to live in the United States today. Using instrumental voices and textures drawn from the traditional American forms of folk, country, bluegrass and blues, and informed with a modern sense of ambience and space, the sound is both contemporary and deeply rooted. With New World, Lonely Ride, Grigoni and Pan American join countless American artists who have drawn upon this landscape -- physical and affective -- giving it a voice and shape, listening to its character. And in starting there, with listening, offer a response for the future."

Todh Teri is back with a brand-new chapter. The Return of Neela Devi kicks off a vinyl-only series where the iconic characters from Deep In India finally take center stage. Leading the way is Neela Devi herself, across three genre-spanning tracks that cover everything from vintage disco to spaced-out synths and slow-burning indie dance. There's something here for every kind of listener -- the groover, the dreamer, and the deep digger. It opens with "Maalgaadi 54" -- a relentless disco heater drenched in '70s glam, trippy layers, and hands-in-the-air energy. Next comes "Cosmic Dirt" -- dusty, mysterious, and dripping with attitude. Think desert synths, dark disco grooves, and a mood straight out of an Indian spaghetti western. Closing the record is "Beauty Blues" -- a dubby slow-burner that gently builds before locking into a bouncing, blissed-out groove. A cheeky take on a classic that'll leave you smiling from start to finish. Those who dig a little deeper into the wax will uncover a secret locked groove visually, the record is a stunner. The artwork is helmed by Soju Aduckathil, with creative direction by Manoj Kurian, the visionary behind Masala Movement. TOBAR, RICARDO Knitting 12"
Ricardo Tobar returns to MUSAR with Knitting -- a four-track EP blending dancefloor intimacy with raw, analog spirit. A two original cuts from the Chilean producer are joined by standout remixes from synth sorcerer Pye Corner Audio and cosmic rave queen Nightwave. The EP opens with "Los Siblings," a distilled snapshot of Tobar's current sound: intricate arrangements, ethereal melodies, heavyweight bassline and a vintage edge shaped for the club. "I'm embracing the dancefloor," he says. "This is me doing tunes I would like to dance to." On the flip, "Knitting" unravels from a simple arpeggio into lysergic "Stereolab"-techno chaos -- alive, imperfect, and deeply personal. "It sounds like it wants to eat itself," Tobar reflects. Layers on layers of psychedelia and cosmic melody turn this into a trippy journey track like no one else does. Architect of foggy club rituals, Pye Corner Audio transforms "Knitting" into an eerie, trancetinged club weapon, while Nightwave turns "Knitting" into a high-gloss, dreamy club stormer.

WIR Vien + CD
"WIR had risen phoenix like from the ashes of the acclaimed UK post-punk band after drummer Robert Grey left in 1990 and were created to fulfill the final phase of Wire's Mute Records contract. With a more sequence-based sound, WIR saw the band breaking all their own rules by creating a new sparse electronic music with Graham Lewis singing most of the vocals and even cannibalizing their own catalogue by sometimes sampling their own older material. WIR was, however, not a long-term project and besides completing their only album, The First Letter, their only other activities were a very small number of gigs and two multi-artist 'conceptual happenings' under the name I Saw You. One of these was in Clapham in April 1992 on election night and the other in Vienna in Feb 1993. On that Vienna trip, in addition to playing the gig, the band recorded a radio session for the Austrian national broadcaster ORF which was organized by Peter Rehberg -- later the person behind MEGO. This was released in 1996 by Touch on CD and consisted of two long tracks with a running time of almost 25 minutes. Once the short run of CDs had sold out, the rights technically fell to the band, and Pink Flag released it -- digital only -- in 2007. It has never been released on vinyl before now. The remastered 2025 vinyl edition adds a newly recorded, Taylor Swift style re-recording of what is undoubtedly WIR's most pop moment, the dark brooding shadows of 'So and Slow.' The version released here is based on how the band played it live, so, in spite of being instantly recognizable, it does not follow the arrangement of any previously released version."

WIR Vien + LP
LP version. WIRE Nine Sevens CD
"Combining the run of early singles with more obscure later period tracks underlines the strength in depth that Wire had. This is pop art as art/pop and an exploration of the blank canvas of pop culture and how far that canvas can be stretched going from three-minute constructs to ambient washes. The 7" single was always the ultimate artefact and statement with the A side being the band momentarily paused in time and distilled and freeze-framed into the forever with less than three minutes of electric sound. Perhaps the greatest pop band that you may never have heard of, Wire understood this implicitly. They somehow found the sweetest of spots between the post-punk's short sharp shock shapeshifting, art prog's defiant experimental and a disciplined pop touch that pushed the parameters of what a song could be. These 'sevens' released from 1977 to the end of that decade signpost the band's remarkable development from their brilliantly monochromatic early phase to the textured complexity of the almost psychedelic unzipping of their sound and vision. 'In some ways the compilation of Nine Sevens onto a double album makes for quite a weird documentation of the band in this period. The first disc, to some extent, follows the script of a singles/greatest hits collection but the second one goes wildly off-piste and ends up somewhere quite far from where the collection started. A conventional Greatest Hits collection, besides being conceptually a bit naff would, if strictly based on charting singles, consist of only one song! A Best Of is subjective and somewhat pointless in the age of the Spotify playlist that anyone can make. The only thing really that these tracks have in common (besides being by Wire) is that they were released or destined to be released on 7" by Wire in the period 1977-1980. Nine Sevens is both title and elevator pitch! Wire always understood the language of pop and also the artfulness of playing with it, deconstructing it and reassembling it into new and thrilling shapes. Decades later, these adventures into sound are like slices of delicious, perfect pop/noise and hits from a parallel universe."

ACK ACK Trouser Tricks (Red Vinyl) LP
Trouser Tricks was the unreleased debut album by West London punk band Ack Ack, formed in the Twickenham/Isleworth area in 1977. The album was recorded in 1980 at TW Music Studio, a small studio tucked away on Fulham Palace Road, capturing the raw, unfiltered energy that defined the band's sound. Despite initial interest from several record labels, including some major ones, the album was never officially released due to the economic recession and the growing belief that punk had run its course. These tracks provide a rare glimpse into a pivotal time in the local punk scene. Experience the lost sounds of Trouser Tricks today!

2025 restock. Radiation Roots present a reissue of King Tubby Meets Scientist's compilation In A Revival Dub, originally released in 2009. Incredible collection of rare King Tubby vs. Scientist tracks. These were some of the last "classical" dub works created before dancehall ultimately mutated into a technologically-driven sound that largely did away with organic instruments and although these works already point in that direction, they still sound entirely fresh today because of the superb musicianship of the Roots Radics and the guiding hand of Jah Thomas in the producer's chair, as well as Scientist and his cohorts, working their dub magic at King Tubby's studio. Extensive liner notes by David Katz.

CLAY KIN Vevey LP
Swiss percussionist Julian Sartorius and UK electronic artist Dan Nicholls team up as Clay Kin, presenting their debut record on Squama. They had never planned to make an album, yet through pure improvisation and spontaneity, Clay Kin have crafted Vevey. An album of seven tracks, distilled from over seven hours of improvised percussion and electronics. Recorded mostly outdoors -- on pedalo boats, up mountains and deep in forests near the namesake Swiss town of Vevey, it is imbued with the soft fascination of birdsong, rushing water and chattering children. Vevey resists genre. As musicians, Sartorius and Nicholls bridge the divide between acoustic and electronic soundscapes. Sartorius' raw, organic percussion interweaves with Nicholls' keyboard-triggered samples and harmonic landscapes, creating a dialogue where the lines between rhythm, melody and noise dissolve. Clay Kin identify their outfit as an audio-visual collective, with visual artist Lou Zon (Louise Boer) rounding out the group, creating videos to accompany both the recorded music and the live experience.

"Two classic Big Boys EP reissued on one 12" LP. Recut and remastered for vinyl, with matte jackets, two-sided insert, 12"x18" two-sided poster (including a collage of Pat Blashill photos) and a sticker. Limited edition of 1,000 copies on colored vinyl. Big Boys music, artwork, and defying attitude have resonated for decades from their inception in 1979 until their demise in 1984. To be able to blend punk, hardcore punk, post-punk, Oi!, avante-garde jazz, and funk just sounds like a mess but Big Boys did this flawlessly and with perfection. Their love of skateboarding also shined through and melted all of this together. At some point Thrasher Magazine caught notice and every skater in the 1980s knew about Big Boys through their coverage in the magazine and their Skate Rock compilations. Most bands are, long forgotten with such a short lifespan. Putting out numerous LP's and EPs while touring the US cemented their legacy that has left a ripple into even modern music. They were at the forefront of do it yourself culture that paved the way for so many."

DEBRIS Debris' LP
"Chickasha, Oklahoma is not a place known for producing a lot of original proto-punk bands. In fact, there is, to Superior Viaduct's knowledge, only one: Debris'. Formed in 1975 by bassist Chuck Ivey, guitarist Oliver 'Rectomo' Powers, and drummer Johnny Gregg, the trio created some of the most art-damaged outsider rock 'n' roll this side of MX-80 Sound. When a local studio offered the package deal of ten hours for recording and mixing as well as pressing 1,000 LPs and two-color jackets, Debris' came in well-rehearsed -- nailing all eleven of their songs in just one take. In April 1976, the same month as Ramones' debut album, Debris' would release their lone record onto the world. Opener 'One Way Spit' could easily be mistaken for a lost KBD single -- from Chuck's bizarre count-in to the band's trashy start-stop rhythms, unfurling a Dadaist flag around Johnny's visceral vocals. On 'Tricia,' a reference to the then-current Patty Hearst trial, Oliver's gruesome groans are sardonically juxtaposed with an electric saw. These LSD-tinged tunes are a potent mix of Beefheart-ian controlled chaos and the genuinely weird avant-rock associated with the mid-'70s Cleveland scene. Enhanced by analog synthesizers and electronic effects, the album sounds like Eno-era Roxy Music or Stooges' Fun House buried deep in the red Oklahoma dirt. While punk would spark a handful of bands who boldly straddled the line between the primal and the experimental, the relatively unsung Debris' were one of the first to do so. Debris' had a standing invitation to play New York at Max's Kansas City and CBGB in 1976, although they never made it out of Oklahoma. The private-press edition of their self-titled album (also known as Static Disposal, which was actually the label name printed on the original front cover) has since become a collector's item and is even namechecked on the infamous NWW list."

FEX Skyscraper LP
LP version. The incredible story that began with "The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet" (TMMS) now enters an exciting new chapter: Skyscraper, the debut album by FEX. Skyscraper features ten original tracks recorded in the early to mid-1980s -- carefully re-transferred, remastered, and brought back to life. The album cover, designed by Darius S., brings the story full circle. Darius is the very person who preserved the now-iconic track "Subways of Your Mind" by recording it from NDR radio in the mid-'80s. Without him, FEX may never have been discovered. FEX's debut opens with its namesake, "Skyscraper" -- a brooding, previously unreleased track the band once described as part of their "psychedelic phase." With haunting synth-helicopter textures and deep guitar riffs, it immediately sets the tone and raises tension. The release flows naturally into the energetic and fully remastered studio version of "Subways of Your Mind." This version of the TMMS was long believed to be from a smaller home studio, but was actually recorded in November 1984 at Hawkeye Studios in Ganderkesee, near Hamburg. R?ckwardt's lyrics point to greed and criticizes materialism, and while the music leans toward pop sensibilities, it carries a raw, fractured edge. From a rehearsal tape comes "Dirty Slapstick," its urgency intact. Missing keyboard parts were later reconstructed by Michael H?drich using his original DX7 synthesizer. The album closes where the legend began -- with the original radio recording of "Subways of Your Mind" from Darius' cassette. Digitally transferred using a high-end Revox machine and carefully remastered, it now has its long-deserved official release. The cover features a photo of the Eichenberg Bunker in Kiel.

BRADY, GABRIEL Day-Blind LP
"Through the interaction of dulcet textures and harmonious melodies, infused with Greek bouzouki string plucks, sporadic piano and violin, enigmatic musician Gabriel Brady laments the everyday with daring simplicity on his lustrous alt-ambient debut for the Tonal Union imprint. Across its seven vignettes, Day-Blind is life animated as Brady makes possible an everyday encounter with the transcendent. Attracted by the sensibilities of old French film scores, especially those by Michel Legrand and Jean Constantin and the sheer simplistic beauty of forbearing composers Debussy, Satie, and Ravel, Brady cites inspiration in a warm earnestness to the melodies; and the complete, unmediated feeling that such scores and orchestrations create. Written and produced in his bedroom dorm at Harvard, in Cambridge Massachusetts, Brady recorded organic instruments (violin, bouzouki) before routing them through a compact modular synth setup acting as a sound chamber for further manipulation (loops, effects, textures). In striving to make sense of the ordinary, on Day-Blind, Brady's works are invariably imbued with a sense of serenity and tension. Day-Blind too explores themes of memory, nostalgia, and melancholia which emanate from its lo-fi, intimate and sensitive nature. Through a hazy smokescreen of delays, tape loops and decays Brady contemplates a typical post-modern-era dilemma of wistful longing and lonesome nostalgia, existing parallel/alongside contentment and staying in the present moment. The bare, reflective 'Streetlight' with its pitch-shifted and vari-speed piano, spliced with a weeping violin melody performed by Kalman Strauss, precedes the re-constructive 'Untitled' with a heavily filtered looping piano and rhythmic pulse. 'Ambrosial', dims the spotlight to a close being the most textural-laden track, combining loose sonic materials similar to Eno's Ambient 4 collage techniques. By channeling his own acute musical sensibilities by means of evocative voicings, Brady momentarily deconstructs, warps and reshapes reality."

JOYNES & MIKE GANGLOFF, C Tom Winter, Tom Spring LP
"Debut LP by the duo of Gangloff and Joynes, finding novel ways to combine their accomplished takes on avant folk, American primitive, and outsider sound into a unique and beautiful jumble. Side A's 'Rapid City' is a brisk fingerpicked jaunt featuring Joynes' unique acoustic/electric hybrid sound, followed by 'West Cavalier' where Gangloff's sawing fiddle and Joynes' guitar take on a straight mountain-style tune. 'Two Bishops' is a languorous and atmospheric Joynes' guitar feature that slips into an extended minor key fingerpicked tremolo. Gangloff's 'The Other Side of Catawba' is a solo fiddle staple from his recent repertoire (and heard on his VHF LP Evening Measures), rendered here in a haunting, reverberant version. The old-time staple 'Sail Away Ladies' closes the side at a tempo made for a country store dance. Side B takes a more expansive and outr? attitude, with Joynes' nimble 'An Opening' (and the brief noise interlude 'Eight Sets of Inverted Commas') setting up the lengthy 'Witch Marks,' which closes proceedings with a dark and droning vibe."
