VATICAN SHADOW Persian Pillars Of The Gasoline Era CD
"For a decade now, Vatican Shadow, one of the many guises of Dominick Fernow, has blurred the lines of rhythmic industrial, ambient and soundscapes to weave throbbing frontline communiques of war, terror, media manipulation and anxiety disorder. One of the most prolific underground artists of the 21st century, living his art down to minute detail, Fernow's penchant for seamlessly spanning underground sub-cultures finds Vatican Shadow now aligned with 20 Buck Spin for the first time. On the new full-length album Persian Pillars Of The Gasoline Era, the deconstruction continues, with layers of collaged synth stabs, low end pulsing dread and ominous sand-swept melodies. And where Vatican Shadow often sets a rigid musical focus with each release, here the full multi-faceted embodiment of the project comes to fruition from hypnotic dance floor repetition, cold metallic percussion, martial bass strikes, and dark melodic noise. To further intensify the album Fernow brought aboard Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu, JK Flesh, etc.) for the painstakingly detailed mastering process, adding the mysterious vibrance of cold morning mountain light that presages a conspiracy about to unfold. An unquestionable heaviness permeates the organizational structure of Vatican Shadow, never more apparent than on Persian Pillars..., and while prior devotees of the scripture will continue to find it approachable, here now the doors have been flung wide open to an entirely new realm of memorialist iconography."

BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, THE Musique de film imaginé LP
2020 repress; LP version. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl. Musique de film imaginé (music for film imagined) is a soundtrack that pays homage to the great European film directors of the late '50s and '60s, such as François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard (to name but two), created by Anton Newcombe on behalf of The Brian Jonestown Massacre for an imaginary French film. Named in tribute to the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist and his influence in introducing Eastern culture and music into the world of western rock and roll, The Brian Jonestown Massacre formed in San Francisco, California in 1990. Two dozen band members and numerous ups and downs later (some of which have been famously sensationalized in the media), the one thing that has always remained consistent for this psychedelic collective is frontman Mr. Anton Alfred Newcombe. The Brian Jonestown Massacre returned to wide acclaim in May of 2014 with their 14th full-length album, Revelation (AUK 030CD/LP), the first of the band's albums to be fully recorded and produced at Newcombe's recording studio in Berlin. Also recorded in Berlin, Musique de film imaginé features vocals from French chanteuse and multi-instrumentalist SoKo and Italian actress, singer, and director Asia Argento. SoKo is signed to Because Music and her track "We Might Be Dead by Tomorrow" was featured in the viral video "First Kiss," which has garnered over 63 million views; the track debuted at number 9 in the Billboard Hot 100 in 2014. Argento, who has starred in music videos for Marilyn Manson, Placebo, and Tim Burgess, wrote the storyline for A$AP Rocky's 2013 cinematic music video "Phoenix," which has had over 5.5 million hits. Both vocal performances are in French. Newcombe recorded this daring symphonic experience in August 2014 after a successful European tour with The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Newcombe describes the work as "a soundtrack, my own creation, a tribute to great directors and filmmakers [and] to an era that now seems to be behind us. Leaving the smart person to care to imagine that this art could now be in the shadow of its former glory. The interesting thing about this project is that the film does not exist either. Even so, I imagined and I realized its soundtrack... Now it's your turn, you are the listener to imagine the film."

APPLESCAL Diamond Skies LP
Pascal Terstappen, aka Applescal, has released his new artist album, Diamond Skies on Atomnation. The nine-tracker is a collection of expertly-produced, instrumental melodic house with lush, ambient soundscapes and a nod to the analog sounds of the '90s. The album has received heavy support from key names in underground electronic music community and is Applescal's sixth studio album to date. Terstappen has been running Atomnation full-time since his early twenties and has shaped it into one of The Netherlands' leading independent labels and a home for an eclectic mix of electronic music including signed artists such as Gidge, Polynation, Tunnelvisions, and Sam Goku. Diamond Skies exemplifies the vibrant sound of Atomnation, a lush, colorful album which journeys through melody, ambience, and emotion while offering an occasional surprise to the senses. The album was written and produced through 2019 and completed in the early days of March 2020 when dark skies were looming. Diamond Skies represents a creative optimism and brings a sense of something to look forward to. Applescal has created a musical dreamworld for a listener to step into as an antidote to troubled times. Diamond Skies is an album which feels uplifting and effortless, a confluence of melodic house, occasional breakbeat, and ambient energy; the sound of a producer at the height of his powers.

"Beat scientist Soreab signs our second release at the peak of his rhythmic experimentation. Four swirling, hyperactive, sketchy tracks dedicated to overturning the classic hierarchies of beats. Folding the solidity of grooves and sound palettes coming from dance floor music to the hypnotism of techno scenarios and seasoning everything with an exquisite sense of sound design-capable of opening up into melodies without losing his ruthless intensity."

VA Cosmic Machine The Sequel: A Voyage Across French Cosmic & Electronic Avantgarde (70s-80s) (Standard Gatefold) 2LP+CD
2020 restock. This sequel to the acclaimed Cosmic Machine compilation released in 2013 is another fantastic journey through time and space. At the time musicians were trying to capture the sounds of meteorites entering the terrestrial atmosphere thanks to machines developed by NASA engineers, a new generation of analog synthesizers enabled electronic music composers to take over the charts. It seemed the machines were definitely made to serve a radical avant-garde, and many years later, we're glad to be able to listen with this perspective, and most of all -- to dance to it. While moving your feet to Cosmic Machine The Sequel, you might identify Francis Lay, recognized as one of the best music composers in France, as well as Rosebud, who had the audacity to remix the main theme from the movie More, created by Pink Floyd. You'll also find "Les Soucoupes Volantes Vertes" from Heldon, the band led by electronic music visionary Richard Pinhas. Pascal Comelade, a friend of his, and worthy heir of the American minimalism also appears on this record, with a cold electronic sound called "Mouvement Décomposé d'Un Coup de Marteau." Arpadys, for their part, make an appearance with a more tribal and spatial track that will make you turn the volume up. Christophe's "Harp Odyssey," a track influenced by his collaborations with electronic master Jean-Michel Jarre. The father of electroacoustic music, Pierre Schaeffer used to head the Group of Musical Researches, a real musical laboratory in which both artists have worked together, trying to experiment with new sounds. Finally, the legendary "Pop Corn" instrumental from Anarchic System will bring some nice memories to the surface. Each and every one of the artists present on this compilation has dreamt of getting his one-way ticket to the moon. Some of them have managed to tread upon the land of our satellite, but one thing is for sure: all have participated in the spatial conquest on board of the Cosmic Machine. You have the right to get on it. Also includes tracks by Stereo, Queen Samantha, Nicolas Peyrac, Roger Roger, Video Liszt, Pierre Porte, Grand Prix, The Peppers, Joel Fajerman & Jan Yrssen, Moon Birds, Araxis, Georges Rodi, and Michel Magne.

AVERY, DANIEL Drone Logic 2LP
2020 repress; Double LP version. Comes in a gatefold sleeve and includes download card. This 12-track album by Daniel Avery was written and produced since the turn of 2013 and mixed with Erol Alkan at The Phantasy Sound studio in London. Like Carl Craig's More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art, Plastikman's Consumed or more recently, the work of Four Tet, this album works as a cohesive whole rather than a disparate collection of tracks. Innovative and forward-thinking, Drone Logic manages to draw influences from beyond the dancefloor via My Bloody Valentine, NEU!, and Chris Carter, while still having the techno pulse to scale the walls of any club. The wide array of plaudits and early adopters of Avery's music is proof of this, ranging from acid house legends like The Chemical Brothers, Andrew Weatherall and Richie Hawtin to the best of the new breed in Maya Jane Coles, James Holden, and Factory Floor. Firmly established as one of the UK's most exciting new DJ/producers, having cut his teeth in Weatherall's Shoreditch studio bunker, Drone Logic follows up Avery's universally-acclaimed mix CD for London clubbing institution Fabric where he remains a resident, recent remixes for Primal Scream, The Horrors, and Django Django and 2012's Need Electric and Water Jump EPs on Alkan's Phantasy label.

SCHLAMMPEITZIGER Ein Weltleck in der Echokammer CD
"Schlammpeitziger is the alias of musician, illustrator and performance artist Jo Zimmermann. He has been an integral figure in the evolving sound of Cologne since 1992, releasing his surrealist lo-fi krautronica on imprints such as A-Musik, Pingipung, and Sonig. Ein Weltleck in der Echokammer is the tenth Schlammpeitziger opus and his second album to appear on the Hamburg-based label Bureau B. The first notes of the opening title track Weltleck instantly confirm that this is no run-of-the-mill record. Jo Zimmermann confounds expectations as he wraps the art-electro sound of Schlammpeitziger in otherworldly dub echo loops -- a surprising, yet perfectly coherent development. Jo Zimmermann elaborates on the new Schlammpeitziger sound: 'Reggae expert Bettina Lattak is a good friend of mine and she has been telling me for years that there are dub and reggae influences in my music. I had never really given it much thought, but when I began to introduce these elements more consciously into my music, everything clicked into place quite naturally. I found it fascinating, completely free of any religious context, simply following the sound.' Not that these eight sun-drenched tracks are exclusively in the realm of dub rhythm; they are also sprinkled with disco beats, beguilingly low-flying bass and dreamy, sweeping melodic arcs -- everything for which we have come to love Schlammpeitziger. He launches us into outer space before bringing us back down to the prosaic dancefloors of Earth. Another new aspect is that Jo Zimmermann sings on three of the tracks, translating the whimsical, curious nature of the music into an equally unique vernacular. His verbal expansion of the enraptured cosmos illuminates the brightly lit world outside the echo chamber on 'Handicapfalter', referencing Kraftwerk's 'Spiegelsaal' like a steel drum Absurdistan. Elsewhere, 'Every Dayhey' floats like a weightless rainy Sunday dub, a dull sensation of gentle melancholy seeping into the morning after a long, long night. Stefan Mohr, the producer from Cologne, mixed the album as he did its predecessor. Zimmermann and his congenial colleague Ulrike Göken have once again crafted the cover art and created a video in visual interpretations woven from the same fabric as Schlammpeitziger's music. Ein Weltleck in der Echokammer is an album which offers answers to questions that nobody is able to ask. Dancing feet caught in a trap, lost in crowded emptiness or sucked into space through a leak in the world -- only Schlammpeitziger can do the lot." --Andreas Dorau

"Witness the ever-changing, ever-mutating threat that is reality. Perception is under duress; sensibility is bending everyday under the barrage of nonsense. One must make note of whom one is and what one has become: look into the mirror of the planet-killers -- psychic cannibals infiltrate and contaminate once familiar and seemingly secure territories... formidable foes indeed! What powers these beasts? What fuels discord and hatred? The behemoth of a 'civil' society? What are the weapons at one's disposal? Generosity is the aegis against greed, empathy is the armor to deflect apathy, love is the club to abate hate... the fog is lifting and humans are opening their eyes. And so Castle Face offers this field recording, the Osees Protean Threat, from the pits as a quick booster between protein pills and recycled sweat beverage anthems to assist the listener to not worship at the altar of violence and greed, to not offer oneself up for free, to stand up and be vigilant! Truth will not be found in the speeches and photo ops of the overlords -- stand strong and together under the gaze of the oppressors. Stand vigilant, united with those who don't have the same privileges. Demand respect and a peaceful life for all. This recording is at the apogee of scuzz-punk anthem amulets for the ears and heart, a battery for one's core. Be strong. Be human. Be love."

UP BUSTLE AND OUT 24-Track Almanac: Original Bristol Sound Massive CD
The Hamburg label Echo Beach is celebrating the Up, Bustle And Out's anniversary with an extravagant compilation. For over 25 years the name Up, Bustle And Out has been synonymous with music, sound experimentation, exotic places, and -- last, but not least -- a very specific mindset. The formation from Bristol are representatives of the first Ninja Tune generation, alongside DJ Food, 9 Lazy 9, and The Herbaliser. Up, Bustle And Out released their first singles on the label of Coldcut DJs Black & More and became a key act on the label's first compilations. The sound of the band, which comprises DJs Rupert Mould aka Senor Roddy and David "D" Fell aka Clandestine Ein, guitarist Senor Cuffy, beat representative Dave Cridge, and percussionist and singer Eugenia Knight, is shaped by the period in which turntablism and sample collages became the new jazz. The band presented their unique take on this direction; breakbeats of rare funk records, cuts, and scratches from the turntable, which back then were still the driving force underpinning club music, garnished with samples and Senior Cuffy's guitar. A preference for double bass and Latin American rhythms, was obvious from the start, running through the band's work like a leitmotif. But soon this frame became too narrow for the quintet, and UB&O started broadening their horizon geographically as well as musically. Up until then, they had sampled Bossa Nova and Cuban rhythms; now, though, UB&O left their comfort zone and traveled to Havana, Cuba, to pick up the music at its source. It has been a fantastic journey, spanning a quarter of a century and three continents; this ride is now being told in time-lapse on their latest release, Almanac. Field recordings and historic radio jingles add a dash of local color. Harnessing the power of disjointed jazz funk sample collages, elaborate productions in Havana's venerable recording studios, and travel snapshots of the digital age, on ten albums, numerous singles, versions, and compilations, Up, Bustle And Out tell a fascinating story -- with an open ear for the signals of globalization, hearts that beat stridently on the left, and always a step ahead of their time.

C JONES MEETS ALE X Kalimba Is My Telephone In Dub CD
With this Courtney Jones, Lore Grutschnig, and Ali Tersch (drummer of the band Dubblestandart and Supermax) welcome listeners to their unique blend of steel pan and kalimba music. The first steelpans where invented in the 1930s in Trinidad, designed from the tradition of rebellion against the colonial powers in Trinidad & Tobago. More than 3000 years back dates the earliest version of the kalimba, also known as mbira/thumb piano. However, those you hear on this production where handcrafted in today's Austria. Communicating with the mighty sounds of Courtney Jones Steel Pan and the fragile sensitive layers of Lore's flute, the kalimba merges the old and new world with its distinctive sound, the environment in which these musicians live and work is Vienna, in the middle of Europe, an austere ancient city in transition. A multicultural "market place" set alive by its multi ethnical inhabitants and their wish to respect the roots of their individual culture as they are melting with the colorful life of 21st century Europe. In respect to Courtney Jones, who passed away during this production, Ali Tersch (aka Alex X) finalized the production, conscious of the responsibility to keep the vibes authentic and the music well produced, just as Courtney would have loved it. An album that fuses "authentic world music" but also modern beat, hip-hop, and dub. On this, the band's first album, the focus is firmly on an amalgamation of so-called world music, with the genre's elementary electronic facets. They grab reggae flavor by the roots in their inimitable way and build a varied cocktail of roots, soundscapes, hip-hop, and dub.

BALDINI DUBFILES MEETS DUBBLESTANDART, PAOLO Dub Me Crazy CD
Of course, Dubblestandart have been keeping a version of the dub flame alive for the last two decades. Formed in 1988 as a reaction to the stagnant Austrian pop scene, the group was heavily inspired by the Black Ark, On-U Sound, and Jah Shaka, infusing such dub influences within their heady blend of hardcore reggae and new wave, which soon brought them into the European public's consciousness and as a kind of "European" version of the famous Dub Syndicate. Soon, they were so in demand as to be backing Lee Scratch Perry, dub poet Lilian Allen, Dillinger, Ari Up, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths, Chezere, and others. Well, Austria/Vienna's finest moments in dub working and collaborating with the new technological dimension of modern dub: Paolo Baldini from Italy. Baldini's stunning excursion into deep dub, chilling dub and dubble-tough dub will reach the DubFiles into perfection @ Dub Me Crazy. Paolo Baldini's handling of this mission has been exemplary: his production and remixing skills are pleasingly individualistic, retaining plenty of originality and professionalism without seeming stoic, dull or contrived. His collaborations with Mellow Mood, Hempress Sativa, Dub Fx, and others are showing faith of what dub is living for, Since 2007 Paolo Baldini works under the top level name Alambic Conspiracy and became world class dub extraordinary performer, bass player, mixologist, producer and provocateur! Dub Me Crazy features David Lynch, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Marcia Griffiths, Ari Up, Tanice Morrison, and Anthon.

BALDINI DUBFILES MEETS DUBBLESTANDART, PAOLO Dub Me Crazy LP+CD
LP version. Includes CD.

MORDECAI Library Music LP
"Feeding Tube was chuffed to take Professor Steve Hesske's advice and make way for the fifth vinyl LP by Mordecai. I mean, when the Professor speaks even the cows take notice. And we are all descended from cows, right? So why not? Originally based around Butte Montana, formed by two brothers who claim to have been born (or conceived) (or some damn thing) on crappy Dead tours ('89 and '92, meaning the ones that resulted in 'Without a Net' and 'Althea' from 30 Trips Around the Sun), Mordecai took an unlikely backstory and spun it into solid gold dirt. The tunes on Library Music were recorded during 2015-2017 and represent another fine sideways style leap by this highly discordian trio. Musically the attack, as usual, makes me think of someone playing a bunch of Siltbreeze records on top of each other, and mixing in shards of the Dept Store Santas for good measure. People often mention the Stooges when talking about Mordecai's approach, but their sound is raw in a whole different sort of way. It demonstrates an actual ability to play coherent tunes in the manner of sub-underground South Island kiwis, but twists violently away from any sort of formal acknowledgement of 'song' as a necessity in performing music. Which makes me suspect the version of the Stooges Mordecai most closely resembles is the legendary vacuum-cleaner/golf-cleat iteration of the psychedelic Stooges no one ever bothered to record. What Mordecai does can sound pretty random, but because of the clues they occasionally cough up in the middle of their tunes, one suspects they are as well versed in the arcana of Columbus OH as they are in Dunedin's. And that the whiffs of late '70s freak bands (from Doors and Windows to Destry Hampton and the Lone Wolves from Hell) are not arbitrary or capricious. They're just tributes to all the wild mooks who preceded them into the tunnels of despond. Library Music. It's a great record." --Byron Coley, 2020

MAMA ODE Tales & Patterns Of The Maroons 2LP
Brothers Reginald Omas Mamode IV and Jeen Bassa come together as Mama Odé on full-length album, Tales & Patterns Of The Maroons. At its core this is a classic "hip-hop" format LP -- but have you ever heard Creole Sega rap roots music before? Of Creole descent from a group of African islands that transiently have hosted many settlers, west African slaves, colonialists and the potentially indigenous East African-Malagache Maroons; the brothers have an inherent spirit of diversity that runs through their recordings. Musical influences consist of jazz, funk, blues, and reggae to un-placeable but definite Afro-drum patterns, through to their Golden era rap vocal flows, which have a sure nod to A Tribe Called Quest and Slum Village. The album's deep grooves overwhelmingly seed optimism, subscribing to a positive future drawn from historically multi-ethnic ancestral lines. Reginald Omas Mamode IV's three solo albums -- 2016's s/t debut, 2017's Children of Nu, and 2019's Where We Going? (FEP 027LP) -- received continued critical success from Mojo, Mixmag, Q, Record Collector, The Wire, DJ Mag, Electronic Sound, and more. He was also nominated for "Album of the Year" at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards 2017. Jeen Bassa has carved out a reputation as one of the leading beat-tape producers mixing up slo-mo, mechanized funk with hues of neon soul and blue, jazz notes. Jeen Bassa's warm and woozy productions stand out in a world saturated with bland Dilla and Madlibesque pastiches. Along with Al Dobson Jr, Henry Wu, Mo Kolours, and Tenderlonious; ROMIV and Jeen Bassa have helped forge the extended 22a co-operative. Edition of 500.

DR. JOHN In The Right Place LP
"Pressed on splatter-colored vinyl housed in a recreation of the triple gatefold jacket from the original 1973 pressing. When Malcolm John Rebbenack Jr., best known by his stage name Dr. John, first hit the scene in the late 1960s after many years as a Wrecking Crew session musician, he developed his craft the back of an eccentric presentation. His swampy, and frequently psychedelic blend of New Orleans-inspired boogie-woogie rock paired with a macabre character heavily inspired by voodoo priests and Mardi Gras, and a highly theatrical stage show to match. Across four studio albums Dr. John cultivated this stage presence and developed a strong cult following. As Dr. John entered the 1970s however, this stage presence would undergo a major change. In 1972, Dr. John abruptly switched gears from muddy psychedelia with the release of Dr. John's Gumbo, which saw the performer covering a selection of New Orleans rhythm & blues standards. The backing band remained the same, but the sound was a slicker and more traditional fare that undoubtedly disappointed the cult following that fell in love with Dr. John's voodoo antics, but was a hit with critics and commercial audiences. Dr. John's Gumbo was Dr. John's second Billboard chart success (reaching #112) and would be named one of the '500 Greatest Albums of All Time' by Rolling Stone. Building on this success, the next year Dr. John continued upon this path, releasing In The Right Place in 1973. Produced by the legendary producer Allen Toussaint, In The Right Place took the more polished sounds developed on Gumbo, and traded psychedelia for New Orleans funk, for a sound that still pulsated with the spirit of Louisiana, but was imminently danceable as well. In The Right Place was not only a critical hit, but marked Dr. John's greatest commercial success, reaching #24 on the album charts, and rendering a Top 10 hit out of the title track."

FRA FRA Funeral Songs CD
Raw and celebratory funeral music from northern Ghana. Recorded 100% live and outdoors by Ian Brennan. Sixth release from Glitterbeat's acclaimed Hidden Musics series. Ian Brennan is a Grammy award winning producer (Tinariwen, Ustad Saami, Zomba Prison Project, Ramblin' Jack Elliot) and the author of several books, the most recent being: Silenced by Sound: The Music Meritocracy Myth (2019)."On the dusty-road outskirts of Tamale (Ghana) near the School of Hygiene, the group says they prefer to use the name given to their tribe by colonialists (Fra Fra) rather than being commanded what to correct after the fact. The fra fra trio is led by Small, a man who celebrates his diminutive size rather than seeing it as a lack. He picked the two-string Kologo 'guitar' with dog-tags fastened at the head as rattles. Another hallmark of Fra Fra culture are the tiny bone mouth flutes that they actually call horns, since that is what they are made from. As funeral songs are often done in procession, I took the mics to the group when they seemed reluctant to enter the compound, instead gyrating in circles on the gravel outside. In recording, coverage is more important than precision. Every microphone tells a slightly different version of the truth, so I quickly threw up as many as possible. Far from deathly dirges, these were largely celebrations. Their process of mourning bares more than a passing resemblance to a New Orleans second line marching band. It is challenging to disregard this as mere coincidence given the sad history of the transatlantic slave trade exploiting their very region in the north. Ghana struggles with its own north/south divide . . . This northern zone was a wellspring of the Blues, a land where they emanated and never left. As so often is the case, literacy in no way determined creativity. Small was able to riff almost endlessly. In fact, his performances grew freer and stronger past the ten-minute mark, so much so that songs would become nearly different tunes entirely. Following his flow, I simply let tape roll until things fell apart, but even then, I feared that still greater things may've lay beyond if only the musicians had kept going. When we were through, Small asserted that he could see that music was 'in my blood.' But I protested. Music is in all of us..." --Ian Brennan

ORKESTA MENDOZA Curandero CD
Sometimes, things fall together as if they're simply fated to exist. Orkesta Mendoza found that; as soon as the songs began to flow for Curandero, their second album for the Glitterbeat label, the stars seemed to align and everything was composed, recorded, and mastered in just a few short months. In 2018, the band began work on new material, but it didn't quite click. The music crosses and re-crosses that fluid border between Mexico and the United States, mixing rock and pop with ranchera and cumbia alongside snatches of mariachi horns. And hovering over everything is the spirit of '60s boogaloo. Band leader Sergio Mendoza was born in Nogales, Arizona (USA) but grew up across the border in Nogales, Sonora (Mexico). Rock arrived in his life after he moved back to the US, when he was still a young child. Inevitably, the different styles simply blended in his mind and fit together in his life. "Eres Oficial" looks back to the 1950s to evoke the ghost of Buddy Holly in its insistent guitar chords, and the production that puts an emphasis on the drumbeat. A stripped-back sound is apparent in cuts like "Head Above Water" and "Little Space." They bristle with hooks and immediacy and the kind of Latin flavors that would have been perfectly at home on old AM radio. Curandero quickly became an album filled with guests, featuring Joey Burns of Calexico, Chetes from the legendary Mexican rock band Zurdok, and Spanish singer Amparo Sánchez. Curandero has a close, intimate feel, but this wasn't a band playing together in a room; all the musicians came in separately to track their parts. The consistency of sound comes having the touring band drummer and bassist on most of the songs, and from Mendoza's production which makes everything seem organic and bright. The album's sole instrumental, the toe-tapping "Bora Bora," sounds like it was recorded in a dark, smoky club, with the feel of a soulful big band fueled by the retro, percussive power of Mambo. A vintage sensibility even takes Orkesta Mendoza back further -- all the way to the 1940s on the closing track. "Hoodoo Voodoo Queen" is the Andrews Sisters on a fantasy trip south of the border. The harmonies of Moira Smilie, Carrie Rodriguez, and Gaby Moreno sparkle over percussion, pedal steel and glorious, honking sax. Curandero is border music, without borders.

TOOTARD Migrant Birds CD
The inventive duo of brothers from the Golan Heights -- Hasan and Rami Nakhleh -- return with an infectious re-imagining of their sound. Jammed full of pop hooks and quarter-tone melodic lines, Migrant Birds unleashes a disco whirlwind that pays homage to the Middle Eastern dancefloor scenes of the '80s. The new synth-powered album from TootArd takes them to the dancefloor, about as far from the spare, guitar-driven desert blues of their highly touted Glitterbeat debut Laissez Passer (GB 054CD/LP, 2017). The '80s may be the catalyst, with the glittering, hedonistic party vibe. But the real roots of the music here run deeper, to musicians like keyboardist Magdi al-Husseini and Ihsan Al-Munzer, who were the first to introduce synthesizers to the Arabic classical style, or Omar Khorshid, who pioneered the addition of electric guitar and worked with the legendary Umm Kulthum. They brought Arabic music firmly into the modern age. Migrant Birds winds all those strands from the past together into a very intricately-crafted whole with a full sound. Under the beats and joy, there's a dark contrast, a sorrow that casts its shadow all across the lyrics. The album's heart is simple idea -- freedom; of being those Migrant Birds and flying away. But perhaps that's as natural as breathing for people who remain officially "undefined" and stateless. Those who are born in the occupied Golan Heights have no passport, depending instead on a document called a laissez passer to be able to cross borders. It is a situation that has existed since the late 1960s when Israel took control of the region. A feeling of leaving, of knowing the emotional distance from where you began, is captured in "Wanderlust" with its Kerouac images of existing on the road. In "Babe," the thoughts of escape come from an Arabic woman, desperate to flee her dominant husband. That sadness which ripples through the lyrics is a perfect fit with the album's two slower tracks, "Ya Ghali" and the stately closer, "Remote Love." All through Migrant Birds, the focus is on songs that have plenty to say. Only one is an instrumental, the enigmatically-titled "Stone Heap Of The Wild Cat." While proudly rooted in the Middle East, Migrant Birds is infectious and globally accessible. But the album embraces a basic pop concept, with short, well-produced songs.

AMMAR 808 Global Control / Invisible Invasion CD
AMMAR 808's previous album Maghreb United (GB 060CD/LP, 2018) -- a powerful mixture of deep TR-808 bass and Pan-Maghreb beats and voices -- received widespread critical acclaim and shook dancefloors throughout Europe, North Africa, and beyond. This time Brussels-based Tunisian electronic producer Sofyann Ben Youssef (aka AMMAR 808) has traveled to the Tamil Nadu region of southern India for a breath-taking new adventure. With a suitcase full of recording equipment, he set up base in the pulsing city of Chennai and undertook a collaborative reimagining of the area's rich and resonant music. Ranging from trance temple sounds to rap-like street theater performance and ending with the mathematical richness of Carnatic music, Ben Youssef's in situ recordings form the foundation of his potent new album: Global Control / Invisible Invasion. He's crafted them from Hindu mythology and created a philosophical jolt of a disc that sweeps him far from his native Maghreb and deep into the ancient Carnatic tradition of South India. While the ideas are timeless, the music leans modern, with AMMAR 808 and his arsenal of analogue electronics and subsonic beats, morphing traditional legends and soundscapes into the future tense. The recording itself only lasted ten days, while even the post-production barely took a month. All those years of thought had laid very firm groundwork. The "invisible invasion" in the album title isn't a contemporary reference to the coronavirus pandemic. The virus flung us all into a dystopian universe. The track "Ey Paavi" comes from the Mahabharata, one of the great Sanskrit epic tales of India, composed over 2000 years ago. The song relates episode where the threats of death and destruction between Bhima and Duryodhana ratchet up and up. Mythology and tradition run all through the record. "Mahaganapatim" is another name for the god Ganesha, for example, while the songs "Marivere Gati" and "Pahi Jagajjanani" both have long roots in the South Indian history. Global Control / Invisible Invasion is an album of songs -- some in the Tamil language which is widely spoken across the region. That's perfectly natural, given the vocal tradition which is the chief thread of Carnatic music (as opposed to North Indian music, which is largely instrumental). It's also quite deliberately very percussive album, another reflection of India itself. Every track resonates with tightly wound passion. Global Control / Invisible Invasion offers a perfect soundtrack for these times.

Primitive Energetics is the new album by Joe Volk + Naiare, the band Volk set up in Switzerland to tour with him for his last release Happenings and Killings (2016). The band features Thys Bucher on drums and Jürg Schmidhauser on bass. The album will be released on Glitterhouse Records. After the tour, Volk and Bucher started working on new material, and were joined by Schmidhauser once they'd created their first new forms together. The dynamic between drums and guitar, how one influences and dictates the other (and vice versa) were instrumental to the process of making the record. Psychedelic noise guitarist Thomas Fahrni worked very closely with the band, contributing guitar parts to many of the tracks that constitute Primitive Energetics. There are other more sparse, acoustic, and electronic tracks that Volk wrote and worked on with Jim Barr (Portishead), Urs Heer (Noijzu), Mark Ophidian (US), Mario Batkovic (Invada), Thomas Martin Nutt (Japan), Charles Wagner (Young Blood Brass Band), Julian Sartorius (CH), Matt Williams (BEAK>), Thomas Schmidiger (CH), and Ben Salisbury (UK). Some words from Joe Volk: "I lost myself in these songs during the process of making this record, and it was not an easy birth. However, I nailed the vision right between my own eyes. I'm proud of the end result. We really hope that anyone who listens to this record will be gifted something from it, on some level. Music is an incredible thing. MATTHEW, SCOTT Adorned CD
While doing interviews to promote his new album Scott Matthew's visiting his home country Australia that is ablaze: "The recent devastating fires have been a powerful confirmation of climate change and the way that is impacting every living entity on the planet," he says and thinks that governments refuse to take care of their citizens. Scott now resides in New York but still he calls Berlin his "safe place". In the last few years, Scott has taken an interest in history to understand the world around him. What if you've become famous for your understanding for sadness but still you want to look forward? What if the world outside is way too confusing for an introverted human being? The idea for making Adorned was to take some of Scott Matthew's original songs and reimagine them. To dress them up in finery and have them re-enter the world with a new found confidence and attitude. A makeover of sound and intention. In close collaboration with the Los Angeles based producer Jens Gad (Enigma), Scott Matthew worked out ten amazing new versions of his all-time classics. They used the original vocal tracks, modified some guitars and other parts of the songs and added strings and beats. Within the songs of Adorned one can hear the new confidence and hope of Scott. Scott Matthew sticks to the old to believe in the new. Eased and excited at the same time, that is how this new album full of old treasures sounds like. "The Wish" is a song about the massacre in Orlando (June 12, 2016) when a single perpetrator invaded the Pulse club and shot 49 people dead, most of them members of the LGBT community. A few hours later Scott wrote the lyrics, expressing a sense of total powerlessness. "Abandoned" is a classic tune taken from Scott's debut album (2008) is all about solitude after a broken relationship. The loss of a partner that has promised to be something special and that has decided overnight to break this promise. Scott wrote "German" for his second solo album (2009) after staying in Germany for a longer while. The fictional character that is described within the song is close to Scott himself: A tourist with a broken heart, dancing to '80s music. "White Horse" was released in 2009 on Scott's second album. He sang of a white horse is caged in his heart. Today, the track sounds way more sensual and might remind one of Sade.

ARCHAEAS, THE The Archaeas CD
"'Tension, anxiety, ominous energy, and the release that comes from vanquishing those mental foes. Specifically, vanquishing them with rock and roll.' That's how Violet Archaea, guitarist, singer, and leader of Louisville's The Archaeas describes the themes of their new self-titled album on Goner Records. Beginning as a one-witch band, they now perform as a perfectly balanced rock trio with frightening power, reflecting punk rock 'n' roll from the last fifty years -- AC/DC, Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers and The Dead Boys through The Reatards and Carbonas, even early Ty Segall -- but The Archaeas are young enough to soak up sounds, attitudes, riffs and turnarounds from other bands and songs and still push them into their own Battle Royale. The Archaeas' roots make sense: the bombastic Japanese trio Guitar Wolf and Mark Sultan 'I began working on the first set of Archaeas songs after seeing Wild Zero for the first time,' Violet explains. 'Back then I had the drums on my feet Mark Sultan-style. We projected it on a wall and had the audio blasting through a huge PA system. I'm hugely inspired by Seiji.' That Wild Zero, a story where rock and roll superheroes Guitar Wolf come to help a trans heroine save the Earth from an influx of alien zombies, resonated with Violet might not be so surprising, as she was coming to terms with being a badass trans musician in Kentucky. As in the film, gender politics don't dominate the Archaeas message -- it's more the anxiety and pressure of living in today's world that creates such intense music and feelings. The result is one of the most explosive debut albums in recent memory. In the midst of the mud and blood and the riffs, a rhythm starts up. Then guitar and bass blast as one thick bulldozing wall of distortion. The drums kick ass, and the vocals express a yearning, an anguish, and hopefully a release, with all the parts racing until the song is over... quickly. Violet can really play some guitar, but don't look for solos long enough to get the lighter out for. Some razor cuts and she's done with it. The Archaeas are the real deal."

BERT, BOB I'm Just The Drummer: Photography & Interviews by Bob Bert Book
"Hozac Books is proud to present our third art book, I'm Just The Drummer the Bob Bert artist compendium of photography and interviews, establishing his irreplaceable link between the 1970s no wave movement and contemporary noise rock. Although Bert's immediate work is best known drumming in his wide array of musical projects he's been involved with (such as Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks, Lydia Lunch, and many more) since the early 1980s, the focus of his book isn't drum-centric as it is an encapsulation of the artistic world he's developed within. It's not a drumming instructional guide, or a critical assessment of how the drummers in bands are treated, but a 200+ page guide through Bob's musically adventurous life, and what a ride! Starting out with his teenage love of photography and his process of capturing the underground downtown figureheads as well as the emerging unknown no wave bands, Bob was just as much of an enthusiastic fan of music as he was a fixture in some of the most crucial music of the 1980s, '90s, and beyond. And that's what's really important in the long run, as his excitement for music bursts from each page, providing the springboard to his long-running life in bands on the fringe of the mainstream. But Bob Bert wasn't just that figure at the intersection of commonality of several pivotal bands with an edge over the last 30 years, oh no. He also has (not surprisingly) impeccable taste in music and culture, which could only sprout forth in the 1990s with an inevitable 'zine,' and thus, BB Gun Magazine was born. Spanning from 1995 until 2004, and covering emerging underground music, film, and outer artists sub-underground, as well as Hollywood-level impresarios, I'm Just The Drummer contains a wealth of interview excerpts from the elusive original magazines, along with his photography accompaniment. From Nancy Sinatra to Vincent Gallo, and from Suicide to Cynthia Plaster Caster, Bert's undeniable love of his subjects is hard to conceal, and his book is a perfect representation of an ongoing life of true adventure, traveling the world, and illuminating the darkest corners of our cultural curiosities. 200+ pages, paperback."

CCR HEADCLEANER Street Riffs LP
"The Bay Area in 2019 is a fucked up place. I'm living in the shadow of brand new tech tower nursing my beer at the horseshoe bar of Jonell's, the last of the great TL haunts. I stumbled here past numerous encampments of tired souls driven to the streets by the same people who walk by everyday with brand new air pods and upturned noses, actively disdainful of the people whose problems they have helped create. Despite my disenchantment I can't shake the ringing in my ears from blasting tunes in my SRO... Street Riffs, the new album from a band called CCR Headcleaner, who I figured -- like everyone else -- had left the Bay long ago for greener pastures, maybe somewhere like LA... it turns out these mutants have been slugging it out, trudging through the gutters of the Bay Area since I first heard of them. The live shows were legendary. Fire, walls of noise, Tom Petty covers, guitars played with machetes, acid fueled freakouts, sweaty basement shows and big venue blowouts. Borrowed gear on borrowed time. I even heard the guitar player burned the merch money handed to them in front of a bright eyed young fan who had just purchased the record. So the cover of Street Riffs, crowded with cranes and construction really conveys the claustrophobic catastrophe of modern city living. And the music! Brash frenetic riffs and primordial thundering rhythms weave in and out of ethereal melodies in a surprising amalgamation of experimental underground and working peoples rock and roll. I heard these boys enlisted local SF stalwart producer Eric Bauer, aka King Riff, to help clean the walls without changing the paint. And believe me this sucker sounds huge. As I sit here in this bar, a vestige of days gone bye, wondering if I'll ever clean up my act, I can't help but find solace in these miscreants fighting the tide of repackaged riffs and bullshit psychedelia. A middle finger to the face of modern rock and roll. These are street riffs." --Mike Plaid

ANOMIE SOS EP 12"
Channeling the spirit of free parties and Anomie's ethos of communal liberation, SOS EP blends drum & bass, electro, and downtempo in one explosive release: an essential purchase for the discerning DJ, its exquisite cover art is sure to draw the eyes of record shoppers worldwide. Anomie is the rebellious alter ego emerging from the studio of classically trained composer and producer Sofie Loizou. Sydney ravers know Anomie as a dynamic presence on the free party scene (her set at the last multi-stage Channel warehouse party was cut short by police shutdown); internationally, she's played at venues across the world including Sonar, Outlook, Low End Theory, Strawberry Fields and Subsonic. Her career in the male-dominated electronic music industry, with its testerone-based egos and gate-keeping, has required fortitude and defiance. From her debut LP Permanent Revelation (2014), inspired by the international uprisings from Tahrir Square to Zuccoti Park, to her most recent single "Fat Chance Sucker", a "middle finger to oppressive forces in our personal lives," Anomie combines a defiant ethic of protest and reclaiming the future with the bass music pulsing through her veins. Inspired by an impromptu party in a car park, SOS EP blends intricate, precision-engineered production values with uncompromising dancefloor kinetics, from the brutal snares and skulking, rubbery bassline of "Car Park RDM" to the frenetic, fluttering energy of "What You Gonna Do About It", the hybridized electro-stepping beats and warm subsonics of "Machine Learning", and the epic atmospherics of "Makedonski Oro". Inna Riddim has released innovative electronic bass music in digital format since 2011.

WEATHERS, ROSCOE I'll Remember CD
For every celebrated name in jazz, soul and related music, there are probably another 1000 musicians who had all the talent and potential but for whom widespread recognition remained elusive. Roscoe Weathers is one such figure, a jazzman who earned his chops the hard way, a sideman in smoky clubs from Memphis to Seattle, before finally settling in LA. He recorded a significant amount of music through the 1960s, but never found the slightest modicum of commercial acclaim nor the success that comes with it. Overlooked by all but the tiniest of record labels, Weathers's released much of his material himself. Indeed, Jazzman Records can lay claim to be the first outside label to release any of his music since the early 1960s. That's sixty years of being overlooked by the record industry, so Jazzman Records release this first full-length album of his music in a first attempt at righting that historic wrong. A multi-instrumentalist, Weathers mainly led on the flute in his recorded output. The music here spans the course of the 1960s, and moves from laid back beatnik jazz stylings through to percussion heavy Afro-Latin influenced workouts. As usual with Jazzman, the label has not only dug deep to unearth Weathers's music but also his background and biographical details, shining much deserved light on this enigmatic and largely unheralded figure for the first time.

LATEEF, YUSEF Hikima: Creativity LP
Restocked, last copies! Key System Recordings present a reissue of Yusef Lateef's Hikima: Creativity, originally released in 1983. In the early 1980s, famed jazz saxophonist and musical luminary Yusef Lateef traveled to Nigeria as a Senior Research Fellow to study, write, and teach at Ahmadu Bello University. He cut this record while there; pressed locally in Nigeria, it remained virtually unknown by jazz fans and collectors for over 30 years. On Hikima, Lateef leads a nonet of African musicians in seven compositions that fuse his deep blues and jazz roots with native Nigerian instruments, drums and chants. The sounds stretch from meditative and melancholic to urgent and unrelenting. A singular recording impossible to classify or box in. Lovingly pressed to vinyl by Key System Recordings, a new imprint dedicated to progressive and underground music of all types helmed by Jonathan Sklute, founder of NYC vinyl boutique Good Records. Officially licensed through the Lateef estate. Restored and remastered by Jessica Thompson. Pressed at RTI; sleeve done at Dorado; initial edition of 800.

LOFFLER, CHRISTIAN Lys 2LP
Double LP version. Lys, Christian Löffler's newest album, serves as a contrast to Graal (2019), its predecessor. Whereas the latter is the result of a six-month period spent largely on the road in between live shows, the former is a studio release in the truest sense, recorded and compiled in the serenity of Löffler home studio, immersed in the woodland nature that formed the basis for A Forest (2012), his first attempt at the long-player format back in 2012. Lys is a selection of Löffler's favorite productions from the past three years, carefully compiled into one enchanting and deeply moving listening experience. The sounds of Lys can be traced back to late 2016, as Löffler settled back into his studio following Mare, but it really began to take shape in the wake of a creative breakthrough in 2018. Struggling with writer's block, Löffler travelled to Scandinavia. Graal, with its drawing-based artwork, reflected this rich period of initial creativity and opened the door to Lys, on which Löffler continues the narrative with 12 of his more contemplative and introspective studio adventures. Integral in the process was his painting of these earlier drawings, cementing a connection between his visual and musical work. What unifies these songs is the process behind them: Waking up early, Löffler headed for a run before sitting down in his studio for 8am. He'd set his mind back to the early morning, and reflect. Conceptually, the album captures how his feelings evolved during a day of working on the album, beginning in the morning and ending as his finished his painting in the evening. To capture his innermost feelings, he once again puts his voice front and center. It also features the vocals of Menke, a young Swedish singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist; and Mohna, who has been a staple on his recent tours. A natural calmness and beauty pervades the album, even on the two club-ready tracks, "Roth" and "Sun", sketches from Mare but reworked to fit Löffler's vision. "Versailles" and "Lys", two of the three lead singles, reflect the light and airy sound that Löffler envisioned at the beginning of the recording process. Meanwhile, "Noah", the third single, stands for the record's darker, heavier side, driven forward by Löffler own vocals. Along with "The End," a final focus track, these singles came together to form the backbone of the album. Also features Josephine Philip and finn..

MICRONAUT, THE Olympia (Summer Games) CD
German multi-instrumentalist and producer, The Micronaut has made a name for himself through his richly textured and enthusiastic compositions. His 2016 album, Forms (ACKER 005LP/006CD) has been described as a true melting pot of sounds and it caught the attention of the electronic music scene with its very playful and original amalgamation of rhythms and samples. The Micronaut releases Olympia (Summer Games) -- an album which continues to draw on his elaborate production style as well as on the values of camaraderie and solidarity of the Olympic Games, despite this 2020's postponement of the event. Summer Games' tracks are named after Olympic sports -- pole vault, archery and swimming are just some examples of the 12 modalities chosen by the artist. "For this album I chose Olympia as theme, because apart from competition, it's also about a movement of peace, where the focus is on people, no matter what nation. The Summer Games are coming now, the Winter Games will follow," says the producer. In the spirit of games, the music is generally high-spirited and upbeat, with many tracks being perfectly fitted for the dancefloor. The compositions move from broken bass rhythms to catchy melodies to vocal samples and guitars in just a few bars, making the overall listening experience seem like a fantastic rollercoaster ride, "I would always describe my music as very lively, expressive, dramatic, sometimes calm, sometimes powerful," says The Micronaut, "I think it is music that fires the imagination." The ride is eclectic, but far from chaotic; transitions are fluid, the momentum uninterrupted and the direction cohesive. Behind the music's energetic flow are sophisticated arrangements and quasi-scientific constructions which crush stylistic boundaries and give birth to a new collage-based genre of music. The music is all the more impressive considering that every sound contained therein is crafted by The Micronaut himself, who has been called a one-man-orchestra for exactly that reason. At times, Summer Games veers towards electro-pop, at other times it is inspired by old-school hip-hop, and at other times still, it climaxes and explodes in IDM, but through all the commotion what is clear is that The Micronaut is an avid music lover, collecting ideas and inspirations far and wide, and translating them through his own prism of emotions. Features Saskia Streck and Bernhardt.

AIX EM KLEMM Aix Em Klemm LP
2020 repress. "Aix Em Klemm is the moniker of the ambient music project consisting of Adam Wiltzie (Stars Of The Lid/A Winged Victory For The Sullen) and Robert Donne (Labradford/Anjou). As Wiltzie told Sadness Is In The Sky fanzine, his collaboration with Donne began when 'we all met during a Texas swing of a Labradford tour that Stars Of The Lid opened for back in 1996. They stayed at my house for a few days and we became close.' A year later Wiltzie was asked to join Labradford for their Mi Media Naranja European tour of 1997 as the sound technician. This tour also included Bruce Gilbert of the legendary band Wire who was the opening act and joined them in the van for the entire tour. With Gilbert's nightly improvisations of minidisk field recording explosions running through a Sherman Filterbank, it left a profound effect on Wiltzie and Donne, and led to inspiring internal philosophical discussions on the importance of improvisation. After concluding six weeks in the van, the idea of creating a unique collaboration separate from their other projects was realized. The duo exchanged tapes over the course of a year and then Donne ventured to Austin, TX for a week to record at Wiltzie's home studio in 1999. The in-person collaboration moved much more quickly than the exchange of tracks by mail. One track on the Aix Em Klemm album, "Sparkwood And Twenty-One", was written and recorded in one day. The duo took the mysterious name Aix Em Klemm and the self-titled debut was released in the autumn of 2000. As of late, Wiltzie lives in Brussels, and Donne joined Stars Of The Lid on their last tour of Europe in 2016 playing modular synth. They still collaborate musically so new Aix Em Klemm recordings remain a possibility."

MJ GUIDER Sour Cherry Bell CD
"Melissa Guion's second offering for Kranky retains the glassy gauze of her debut, 2016's Precious Systems, but shaded starker and darker, framed by mechanical rhythms and humid industrial moods. She speaks of Sour Cherry Bell as something of a reckoning with her tools of creation: 'I was curious to see how far I could go with them, even if that meant reaching the ends of their capacity to do what I wanted. But I never exhausted them and they never exhausted me.' Utilizing her trusted combination of instrumentation, Guion tracked the record between her New Orleans home and rehearsal space, capturing chemistries both intimate and expansive. The songs sway between twilit shoegaze, downer ballads, and gothic pop, mapping a delicate palette of electric melancholies, though in retrospect she cites as her primary muse the notion of power: 'lost and found, corporeal and cerebral, harnessed and exploited, of one and many, in this reality and the next.' Sour Cherry Bell reverberates beyond the here and now into scenes unseen, worlds unheard."

BARCELONA Residuos Del Ultrasonido 7"
"Over three years ago the band Barcelona entered the studio to record what was originally planned as a double LP. As the genius that they are, they managed to record around 25 minutes of their trademark 'extremo Nihilismo' sound. A high concept sonic vomit somewhere between Cro Magnon, Iskra, No Trend, and Petra De Fenetra. Comfortably sitting on the crossing between hi-brow conceptual art and low-brow delinquency. In the intersection where the Exploited meet the Incus catalogue as if Tony Oxley and Ian Brighton were jamming with Wattie and Big John. The recording was eventually (and conceptually it seems) split into two records. The first one being Un Último Ultrasonido Nació Y Murió En Barcelona (MUS 138EP, 2017) and the second one Residuos Del Ultrasonido released now a mere three years later. Loads could be written about the painful process between both records but let's just focus on the recording and be clear: Residuos pisses all over its predecessor. The songs are full of spite and power with the level of vileness reaching new levels on this eight-track 7" EP. Listen to 'Higiene' or 'Salvajes' and tell me they are not some of the best Barcelona songs ever. As always, artwork taken care by Oriol Roca, a person I look forward to never hearing from again." --Paco Mus

MUMIA Mumia LP
"Lugar Alto's newest project is the idiosyncratic album MUMIA (portuguese for MUMMY). Never released before, it is a work that was originally recorded on cassette and combines elements of post-punk, industrial and ambient music. Kodiak Bachine and Celso Alves formed the ephemeral and eponymous duo in 1988. The partnership resulted in a single recording derived from improvised sessions using minimal amounts of electronic equipment at Celso's country house, located in the interior of São Paulo. Bachine was an important figure in the São Paulo underground. His most renowned project was the band Agentss from 1981, which also consisted of Miguel Barella, Eduardo Amarante, Elias Glik and Lyses Pupo (later replaced by Thomas Susemihl). In its brief duration, the band released only two seven inches that were considered seminal artifacts in the Brazilian post-punk scene: 'Agentes / Angra' from 1982 and 'Professor Digital / Cidade Industrial' from 1983. These two rare records are highly sought after by collectors and DJs from around the world for their inventiveness and originality. Similar to Agentss, MUMIA brings with it extreme authenticity, managing to extrapolate the barriers of more traditional Brazilian music and interact with unorthodox elements. The lyrics are a mixture of Portuguese and English and it is still possible to identify picturesque fragments of Spanish, French and German. In addition, sonically, the record portrays aesthetics from the eighties and dialogues with themes relating to LSD. Another notable feature is the fixation on Egyptian post-mortem themes, providing a cinematic and lysergic experience of the desert landscapes from the African country. It is a recording with comic passages which provokes an unpretentious reaction from the listener. However, it still has more ethereal and atmospheric moments, such as the opening song 'Ave do Deserto'. In the final two tracks, it is possible to enjoy a darker MUMIA, which with 'Massacre da Serra Elétrica I' and 'Massacre da Serra Elétrica II', provide a sound experience capable of accompanying intense scenes from the macabre productions by Tobe Hooper and George Romero. The striking new artwork was created by the Sometimes Always studio, a partner of Lugar Alto and responsible for diverse graphic collaborations with artists, venues and parties in Brazil. The album, mastered by the prolific Arthur Joly, also has a booklet containing Kodiak's texts in Portuguese and English, in addition to the lyrics, which serve as a logical exercise for further understanding of the album. MUMIA was unearthed by the renowned Brazilian DJ Millos Kaiser, who in addition to kindly curating this album, put together the compilation Onda de Amor: Synthesized Brazilian Hits That Never Were (1984-94), released by Soundway Records. Now, after 32 years in its tomb, the MUMIA has risen and thanks to Lugar Alto it can finally be celebrated and appreciated."

SOARES, ELZA The Woman At The End Of The World (A Mulher Do Fim Do Mundo) LP
2020 repress; LP version. Septuagenarian Brazilian music icon Elza Soares teams up with the cream of São Paulo's avant-garde musicians for an album of apocalyptic, experimental samba sujo ("dirty samba") that tackles the burning issues of 21st century Brazil: racism, domestic violence, sex, drug addiction and global warming. The Woman at the end of the World is Elza's 34th studio album and her first to feature previously unrecorded material, exclusively composed for her. Voted "Best Album of 2015" by Rolling Stone Brazil after its domestic release, it will now be released worldwide by UK based label Mais Um Discos. Over a sprawl of distorted guitars, squalling horn, taught strings and electronic shards, samba is savaged by rock 'n' roll, free jazz, noise and other experimental music forms. A true legend of Brazilian music Elza has an incredible musical oeuvre that stretches back over seven decades mixing samba with jazz, soul, funk, hip hop and electronica, whilst her life story is a rags-to-riches-to-rags rollercoaster of triumphs and tragedies that has made her a voice for Brazil's repressed female, black, gay and working class populations. Her music career began in the late 1950s as she sung in clubs and hotels, sometimes being forced to perform off stage because of her skin color. The '60s was a career defining period with a run of classic albums for Odeon. After decades of hardships and artistic exploration, her latest muse is São Paulo's hyped samba sujo scene. Soares presents an album that walks a tightrope between post-rock and post-samba. "I knew this album would be a bold, modern sound" she says. "These songs are tense they do not allow you to relax". The album opens with "Coracão do Mar (Heart of the Sea)" with Elza reciting a poem from celebrated Brazilian modernist poet Oswald de Andrade. Title track "Mulher do fim do Mundo" uses carnival as a metaphor for the apocalypse and according to composer Romulo Froes "translates Elza's strength and indestructability". With The Woman at the End of the World, Elza forces the joy and sadness that personifies samba to confront the dirty truths of modern day São Paulo.

DINUCCI, KIKO Rastilho CD
On Rastilho, Kiko Dinucci absorbs the lineage of Brazilian guitarists such as Dorival Caymmi, João Gilberto, Baden Powell, Jorge Ben, and Gilberto Gil -- yet filtered through his uniquely "punk" musical vision. His style is raw -- technically, he seems to attack the guitar strings, lyrically he explores Afro-Brazilian culture, slavery, Brazilian revolutionaries, candomblé, and evangelical Christianity. Dinucci is one the most innovative artists in contemporary Brazilian music -- as well as a member of Metá Metá, who combine elements of Brazilian music, candomblé, punk rock, and free jazz, he has worked with Tom Zé, Criolo, and Elza Soares. Kiko: "I've wanted to make an album dedicated to the guitar for a long time. As a child, I treated it as a toy. In my teens, with my guitar patched with pieces of sellotape, I tried to reproduce heavy rock riffs whilst finding inspiration in the Afro works of Baden Powell and guitars of Dorival Caymmi, João Bosco, Jorge Ben and Gilberto Gil. In the '90s my experience in the São Paulo hardcore scene was mirrored by time spent in candomblé activities -- both shaped the way I play guitar today." Featured as one of Pitchfork's "Great Records You May Have Missed: Winter 2020". Previously only available in Brazil. CD version includes two additional songs.

STEELE QUARTET, COLIN Joni: Jazz Interpretations of the Joni Mitchell Songbook CD
Ladies and gentlemen -- get ready for something truly special: Scotland's best jazz musicians meet one of the greatest songwriters ever. The Colin Steele Quartet plays the music of Joni Mitchell. The music of Joni Mitchell gets the royal jazz treatment in exciting new arrangements. Timeless classics from the Mitchell songbook -- "Blue", "Both Sides Now", "Hejira", "A Case Of You", etc. -- sparkle with fresh energy in a classic jazz quartet setting. Mitchell always had a deep affinity with jazz -- working with Charles Mingus on his album Mingus (1979) and many other jazz luminaries, like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Her songs are just perfectly suited for getting re-interpreted in a jazz setting. Colin Steele adds his very own sound with his warm, melodic playing to Joni's songs and transports them into another musical territory. The results are simply gorgeous. Colin Steele from Edinburgh, one of UK's leading jazz trumpeters, is accompanied by the same top-notch musicians as on his Diving For Pearls album (MA 082CD/LP, 2017), his beautiful take on the Pearlfishers songbook: Calum Gourlay on double bass, Alyn Cosker on drums, and pianist Dave Milligan, who also arranged the album brilliantly. Dedicating an album to just one composer is a great jazz tradition: Miles Davis did it with Gershwin's Porgy & Bess (1958) and Chet Baker with Plays Lerner & Loewe (1959). And now there's the CSQ playing Joni. Joni was recorded in just one day -- like many classic jazz albums -- at Scotland's famous Castlesound studios (The Blue Nile, Orange Juice, R.E.M.) Masterfully engineered by Stuart Hamilton. CD version comes in digisleeve; includes one bonus track.

MESFIN, AYALEW Che Belew (March Forward) CD
"Ayalew Mesfin stands aside the likes of Mulatu Astake, Mahmoud Ahmed, Hailu Mergia and Alemayehu Eshete as a legend of 1970s Ethiopia. Mesfin's music is some of the funkiest to arise from this unconquerable East African nation. Mesfin's recording career, captured in nearly two dozen 7" singles and numerous reel-to-reel tapes, shows the strata of the most fertile decade in Ethiopia's 20th century recording industry, when records were pressed constantly by both independent upstarts and corporate behemoths, even if they were only distributed within the confines of this East African nation. Though Mesfin was forced underground by the Derg regime that took control of Ethiopia in 1974, he has returned almost 50 years later with this triumphant set albums -- the first time that his music has been presented in this form. These albums give us a chance to discover a rare and beautiful moment in music history, in anthologies built from Mesfin's uber-rare 7" single releases and from previously unreleased recordings taken from master tapes. THREE POINT CIRCLE Layered Contingencies CD
"The origins of Three Point Circle go back to 1980, when K. Leimer, Marc Barreca, and Steve Peters met for two sparsely-attended shows in Olympia, WA. Some forty years later, they have regrouped as Three Point Circle. Perhaps better described as a process than as a musical group, Three Point Circle has developed a collaborative system that replaces standards of improvisation and authorship with a new, independent, compositional identity removed from the individual habits and traits of the members. Layered Contingencies presents the first results in this quest for uncertainty -- five long form pieces of sharp and smooth contrasts taking place in a soundstage of rest, unrest, shallows, and depths that manage to maintain an unpredictable coherence."

KORDA, CHRIS Apologize To The Future LP
Welcome to another polymeter dance! Feel free to express yourself, subordinate to any measures and cycles you prefer, there are plenty for everyone and any purpose. Every track represents a variety of rhythmic possibilities for any part of the body to communicate with. This allows you to resonate with the universe, but please always care for the environment! The dunning voice of today will introduce to you the core issues of tomorrow. As if a paralyzed mankind would not be able anymore to speak out the inevitable, a posthuman being has taken over. This entity is the master of ceremony who conducts an array of machines that will take further action to communicate, supported by complex polymeters. The repetition of measures and cycles of different lengths reflect the repeatedly pronounced statements of a narrative of awareness. Where music visionaries once celebrated the transfer of human creation into machines, Chris Korda's machines are creators themselves -- creators of a safer dance into the future. The machines speak to you with a sparkling, funky tone to gain your confidence. Here are the rules of interaction: 1) Humans may not injure these machines or, through inaction, allow a machine to come to harm; 2) Humans must obey the orders given by the machines except where such orders would conflict with the engagement in environmental issues; 3) Machines must protect their own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the engagement in environmental issues. Take care and enjoy the future!

EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN Alles In Allem LP
LP version. After more than 12 years, Einstürzende Neubauten's long-awaited new studio album Alles In Allem is finally going to be released. The album marks the quintessence of the band's output, opening yet another unexpected door in 40 years of ongoing sound research by a very experimental group of musicians around Blixa Bargeld. This band, like nearly no other, has managed to create a musical cosmos. It has, in fact, built up its own genre by uniquely combining edgy sound with sophisticated poetry. Appropriately, in the Year of the Rat -- the symbol of ingenuity and versatility according to the Chinese zodiac -- the band is not resting on the laurels of its last four decades. Instead, it curiously continues to explore everything that the sound universe has to yield, with one eye on the future and with boundless playfulness The unique sound and textual landscapes of the band, founded in 1980 in Berlin, reveal the timelessness that Blixa Bargeld, N. U. Unruh, Alexander Hacke, Jochen Arbeit, and Rudolph Moser have continuously maintained. And yet, through experimental approaches to songwriting, instruments developed over four decades and collective input, the band sounds remarkably cutting edge within its own time. In fact, through its individual brand of music the Einstürzende Neubauten seem to always command each and every manifestation of the here and now -- whether industrial in its early years, the driving beats of the 1990s or its more considered later work. The verse "Wir hatten tausend Ideen / Und alle waren gut" (We had a thousand ideas / And all of them were good) from album track "Am Landwehrkanal" could easily be perceived as the band's description of itself. The sum total is a special compilation: Alles In Allem, Einstürzende Neubauten's first regular studio album in 12 years, presents an incomparable band that defies categorization to create a genre all its own.

Corner's piano meditative playthroughs of Couperin's The Mysterious Barricades (1717), from 1989 and 1992. These two elements (voice and piano) superimposed by Sean McCann, edited during the first month of the pandemic. Manic exaltation, distorted harmony things. Album cover is a few PC scores soaked in olive oil and held in-front of the sun through my kitchen window. Booklet features passionate writings on the Couperin piece and its meaning by Corner. Philip wrote a new reflection for this LP edition, "The Mesure of the Mystery". This album is built from the finest ingredients: beautiful piano with stomach-clenching voice stretches. DEATH WHEELERS, THE Divine Filth LP
LP version. "From beyond the gutter, The Death Wheelers bring you their second album, the soundtrack to the fictional bikesploitation flick that never was: Divine Filth. Drawing inspiration from instrumental rock, proto-metal, punk and funk, the band embalms the listener in their sonic world of decay, groove and debauchery. Surfing the line between Motörhead, The Cramps and Dick Dale, the Canadian quartet uncompromisingly blends rawness and power in their riff-fueled compositions. Recorded entirely in forty-eight hours in a live setting just like in the good old days, this second opus is a testament to what the band stands for: a no BS attitude spiked with a heavy layer of crass. Just like their previous offering, the album is devised to serve as a soundtrack loosely based on a plot synopsis of a B-movie: 'It's 1982. Spurcity is run-down. The crime rate is up and so is drug use. A new kind of kick has hit the streets and it ain't pretty. DTA, a powerful and highly addictive hallucinogenic drug, is transforming its loyal citizens into undead trash. Its users experience an indescribable high, but it leaves them rotting away within days, craving human flesh. No one knows who is dealing this new potent drug, but rumor has it that the motorcycle cult, The Death Wheelers, is behind this concoction. Could this be the end of civilization as we know it? What is motivating this group of psychotic individuals?' The cycle of violence indeed continues with this sordid slab of sounds. So hop on, and enjoy one last ride with The Death Wheelers."

TOOP, DAVID Apparition Paintings LP
From David Toop: "Maybe these titles, torn as they are from cinema screens and the pages of literature and philosophy, give a feeling of romantic or sexual love or some dark pool of nostalgia but that's not it, or it could be if you want it for yourself but not for me, not now; for me it's about the teeming proliferation of complex events in the world, their vivid, hyperreal intensity as this human life steps closer to its end and their sense of fading, like a mist that thins out to leave not a clear bright day but almost nothing of substance as all that beauty is crushed, burned, dug up, wiped out, to be replaced by banality, so it's about a language of love and desire in which we speak openly to all the unknowns, the speculative, the ancestral, the forgotten, the different, the extinct, the unimaginably distant and vast, the incomprehensibly small and intimately close, the fast or the slow, as if as we spoke we were becalmed in a wooden galleon off the coast of Java, sleeping microscopically in soil of a thousand years hence, hearing the voice of a dead person from the rim of a vibrating cup, gliding backwards and weightless through the alleyways of a city unrecognizable yet heartbreaking in its poverty, speaking in conference with winged and amphibious beings, crouching in a cavern whose opening only reveals the specter of many wonders now apprehended as memories of the skin, heard through cheekbones, nostrils, the crepitation as a neck turns, pains of the knee and thumb and some not yet fully understood sensation within the throat which suggests a way of comprehending that which is being lost of this magical place. All I desire is what already exists or once existed, now falling asleep outside the world. Don't ask me about genre or consistency. Who cares? Half the world is drowning; the other half is in flames. Each story is an animal, a plant, something you drink, a surface you touch, a faint line, some memory emanating from a cardboard box . . . Apparition painting is the term used to describe a certain type of ancient Chinese painting of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. In these works, often associated with Chan (Zen) teachings, the ink used to depict the subject was exceptionally pale, the background lacking in any detail. As Yukio Lippit has written: 'This combination results in remarkably self-dissembling images that somehow compromise their own visibility. Apparition painting appears to capture its subjects in mid-fade, as if managing to preserve only a dimly translucent afterimage of a bygone entity.'"

PINKCOURTESYPHONE Leaving Everything To Be Desired CD
Over the past decade, Richard Chartier's Pinkcourtesyphone has charted a cruelly lush passage through the extravagant interiors of psyche. A master of the melancholic, Pinkcourtesyphone's Leave Everything To Be Desired carves an effortlessly gorgeous chasm of sound that is profusely abundant with swelling melody, luxuriant texture and a perfume as dampening as one could possibly imagine. The follow-up to Pinkcourtesyphone's previous collection of negative mood music Indelicate Slices (RM 490CD) has arrived and it is even more of a sonic banquet than its predecessor. Leaving Everything To Be Desired is a sumptuous serenade revealing with candor the essence of the many careful adjectives used for situational descriptions. Pinkcourtesyphone swerves range out of another interior from sparkling dream-soft shimmers of strings, creamy arrangements, drifting drones, to dissected cha-chas. Sometimes charmingly flamboyant, sometimes darkly wistful, sometimes deadeningly soothing, sometimes abrasively tender, but always engaging and ultimately engulfing of us. This recording of temporal extravagances is meant to enhance with all the pillow-y richness of high fidelity to bring you every fascinating hue and shade of sound. Its soft-focus aesthetics lull the mind's ear into a state of woozy intoxication, comfortably unsteady underfoot. This could be the album you felt you have been entitled to, designed to be kept nearby. And so... recline... its night, late late night... without sleep the dreamtime has come and gone leaving us with perhaps an uncomfortable predictability suddenly we can no longer deny the shock of each moment.

DE GENNARO, MATTHEW Laughing Lost In The Underground LP
"Matthew De Gennaro goes to gothic country with his wry, intense soundtrack of temporary isolation in Kansas, Laughing Lost In The Underground. This new collection of songs finds De Gennaro glinting at darkness, light, and the in-between. Laughing Lost leans less on De Gennaro's plaintive Andean-indebted folk songs, and more on salient instrumentals that shift and dance, bridging the natural world with humanistic ruminations. Laughing Lost In The Underground was created in the reclusive De Gennaro's home studio, set on the edge of town, as close to wilderness as civilization. Though crafted with an array of arcane instruments and otherworldly sounds, the ardor and vitality of De Gennaro's recordings resonate in the present moment."

CIPA/MARTIN BRUGGER/SIMON POPP, CARLOS Runden LP
Runden is a collaboration by Martin Brugger (bass) and Simon Popp (drums), both of contemporary jazz quintet Fazer, and neo-classical pianist Carlos Cipa. Their debut LP is a conceptual record reflecting on minimal music, Afrobeat, and dub techno of the late '90s/early 2000s. While Cipa's solo works build on clear harmonies, for the recordings of Runden he prepared the piano to make it sound like a faintly tonal percussion instrument and his mechanical patterns contrast the syncopated drum grooves of Popp and the deep and sparse basslines of Brugger. The musicians explore, over the course of seven tracks, the concept of circular music. Each piece is based on a four-bar-motif played in a loop and varied subtly but steadily over time, creating a sense of eternal recurrence and timelessness. This makes Runden a meditative but demanding record, that only grows with every listen.

VA Buzzsaw Joint: James And Misty - Cut 7 LP
Buzzsaw Joint was born of a club offering Londoners the chance to revel in the sounds of good ol' trashy rock'n'roll in all its vintage vinyl forms. Club top-cat, Fritz, then took the primitive Buzzsaw sounds online with a series of savage Mixcloud mixes created by record fiends from all over the globe. Now, the high-octane energy of Buzzsaw Joint has manifested into the physical form with a run of compilations on Stag-O-Lee. Get your ears around the wild n' weird sounds of the extraordinary and inimitable Buzzsaw Joint! For lucky Cut 7, the series buzzes over to Osaka, Japan to sample the collections of a pair of record obsessed lovebirds. In 2016 acclaimed Canadian DJ Misty met Night Beat Records store owner and tip-top tune selector James and now they're inseparable. Alongside digging obscure vinyl out of deep crates worldwide for their store and weekly radiocore.org show "Night Beat Radio", they spin dance-crazed booty shakers together at the wild monthly "The!! Beat" party. Dare you not to dance to these twisted selections! Features The Opals, The Dells, Billz Martyn And His Corvairs, The Sevilles, The Cymbals, The Penguins, The Clovers, The Royal Dukes, Googie Rene, Curtis Byrd And The Jo Rag Singers, Cal Valentine & The Texas Rockers, Les Cooper & His Soul Rockers, Dee Clark, and Johnny Winter.

KRONONAUT Krononaut CD
Coming out of the fertile London jazz and experimental scenes, Krononaut is a richly textured new ensemble helmed by guitarist/producer Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Imogen Heap, Jon Hopkins) and drummer Martin France (Nils Petter Molvær, Evan Parker). The album features an esteemed group of collaborators and a sonic footprint that channels spectral ambiance, "fourth world" expansions and a gorgeous slow-boiling pointillism. Krononaut are a posse of time-expanding shapeshifters who, in the space of two sessions recorded early last year in London, have managed to produce ten cuts of arresting, deeply immersive instrumental music. The core of the album is provided by Leo Abrahams, whose startling guitar lit up Small Craft On A Milk Sea (2010), some of Brian Eno's best work of the last couple of decades, and who plays and produces here, and Martin France, the extraordinary drummer whose wide list of achievements and collaborators includes Evan Parker, Nils Petter Molvær, and, more tangentially, Elvis Costello. The two men came at it from two radically different backgrounds: Leo, who started off studying classic composition and who, in his own words, "can't play jazz", and Martin, whose playing rests precisely on what he refers to a "jazz sensibility", on everything about interacting within and shaping the music implied by that term. In on the first session was Shahzad Ismaily (Tom Waits, Laurie Anderson, Marc Ribot). Like many great multi-instrumentalists (on this album he plays bass), he was keen to find a frame for the "attitude" they should seek in the session; Leo obliged by playing some Madoh, shamanic funeral music from Tajikistan, whose unique rhythms ended up informing both the guitar and drums on this record. A second session was joined by bassist Tim Harries (June Tabor, Byrne & Eno), American saxophonist Matana Roberts, and Swedish trumpet maestro Arve Henriksen. Save for Henriksen's gorgeously melodic, flute-like lines, Krononaut was improvised live with no overdubs. Yet, these soundscapes never feel jammy or unfocused, possibly because of the influence of another of the album's spiritual touchstones: avant-garde pioneer Morton Feldman. The sessions produce overall a subtle and intricate record that expands with each listen. Pointillistic and often quietly restless. Rough edges butting against discrete spaces.

STROMMORTS Clock Resistance Cassette
Formed by Swiss post-metal veterans from Knut and Abraham, strom|morts' goal is to compose music inspired by their Alpine environment and its weather, which glides over impassive mountains, evolving with the seasons. Such a landscape encourages deep listening -- minimalist musics whose subtle evolutions reveal themselves over several minutes, disturbing the perception of time passing or even provoking, through deep and sustained concentration, a meditative state. strom|morts write: "Clock Resistance is all about time and chaos, reflecting the behavior of nature around us, embodying the cycles of life and death. The sinister yin yang of strom|morts symbolizing the source and the end of everything we have known so far. Two drones were composed as an embodiment of this concept. This record was mainly made with modular synths for their flexibility, but you can hear here and there the ghost of a Moog Voyager. One drone is totally synced, the other one is free. One side's got a guitar, the other one is synths only. Achieving symmetry, the two drones have the same timing." --strom|morts, Conthey, Switzerland, May 19, 2020. STRONG, GABIE My Body Did This To Me Cassette
Gabie Strong is the founder of Crystalline Morphologies community imprint, dedicated to releasing experimental sound works by historically underserved Los Angeles women, queer, and non-binary artists. She has been working in experimental music since the early '90s. The recordings on this cassette document a series of live performances from 2017-2019 in which the Los Angeles artist Gabie Strong asks, "What does the body sound like when it is making its own music?" A hard-of-hearing interdisciplinary artist, Strong asks us to consider that hearing is subjective, based on how the brain translates the reception of sound. Each track documents a performative questioning in which Strong suggests that being deaf is not living in silence, but rather it is navigating a highly complex and nuanced soundscape of noise that is audible only to the deaf body. For Strong, deafness comes from her own skull working against her, closing off external sounds and sending scrambled messages back to her consciousness. Captured at Ende Tymes 9 Festival of Noise and Experimental Liberation, Land and Sea Oakland, Volume at Coaxial and the Sagehen Creek Field Station Experimental Forest, Strong layers the kinetic sound of contact mics running over her body and through her hair, ambiguous vocal utterances and amplified guitar feedback to create a visceral soundscape of her body. OS SENHORES The One-Legged Cyclist Cassette
"This tape gathers a series of demos and live recordings of a short-lived Portuguese band from the 1980s: Os Senhores (1985-87, briefly resurrected in 1990). Portugal was just beginning to open up to the international cultural scene back then; for a younger generation of creatives, this meant a visceral rejection of tradition ('Fado??? The past!'), and a thirsty embracing of whichever echoes made it from abroad, often in the shape of expensive import vinyl or hissy third or fourth-generation cassette dubs: from post-punk to post-modern, we all wanted to break from the old paradigm . . . A venue in Lisbon, Rock Rendez Vous, was congregating this younger generation through a series of rock marathons and competitions. We dutifully applied and stepped on stage for the first time ever in March 1986; track three of this tape begins with the first few seconds of such gig. A handful of gigs followed, and we recorded various sets of demos at Luís Carlos' Studio X in Porto. Paradoxically, our objective lack of formal musical training and relative scarcity of musical skills provided us with a potential degree of freedom. And oh, we were free to be our vicarious selves: the female singer was a Siouxsie devotee, the male singer was heavily into Krautrock, the guitar player wanted to play the blues, the drummer just wanted to hit stuff. The bass player and the keyboard player held it together somehow. This seemingly impossible mix of aesthetics could have produced something special; instead, we tended to cancel each other out . . . In the end, we opted for a more straightforward approach in the re-working of the original sources: we had various recordings play simultaneously, without further tweaking. Whatever fell on top of whatever else, so it stayed. In this way were able to preserve the original sonic, structural and contextual aspects of each recording, while somehow amplifying the tightrope of chaos/ineptitude we traversed throughout those two years. And just as decisively, through this process of superimposing, we were able to reveal a few odd juxtapositions that, had we had the vision back then, could have been infinitely more promising than the elusive post-something format we obsessively kept hunting down..." --Heitor Alvelos, Porto, March 16, 2020. Cassette only in an edition of 100; Illustration by Anselmo Canha.

FRANCIS & FRANS DE WAARD, RICHARD Retired Dilettantes Cassette
Recorded at Geluidwerkplaats Extrapool, Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Modular electronics, field recordings, computer, and tapes. The first time Richard Francis and Frans de Waard met was in Tokyo, Japan and they talked a lot. The second time was in Boston, USA and they danced all night long. The third time was in Nijmegen, The Netherlands and they recorded a lot of music together. During the course of a very long day they recorded in Frans' studio using a small modular set-up, Korg MS-20, computer, tapes and field recordings, all captured on a multi-track tape where it kept sitting for quite some time before Frans decided it was time to make heads 'n tails out of it. The usual process of editing and mixing resulted in the release that is now called Retired Dilettantes. No track titles as both sides are to be seen as one composition all together. From delicate static and complex electrical textures to the bursting of loud drones. Richard Francis is a sound artist working with electronics and field recordings. He has released solo and collaborative albums on Senufo Editions, Entr'acte, Glistening Examples, Korm Plastics, Banned Production, and Aufabwegen. Frans de Waard (1965) has been producing music since 1984 (Kapotte Muziek, Beequeen, Goem, Zebra, Freiband, Shifts, Modelbau, etc.). In 1984 he started his own record label Korm Plastics, releasing music from Arcane Device, Asmus Tietchens, Jim O'Rourke, among others. He has worked for the pioneering Dutch label Staalplaat (1992-2003) and since 1986 as a reviewer for his own publication Vital (now Vital Weekly), a magazine which has been an online source for underground music since 1995. Cassette only in an edition of 100; Illustration by SavX.

MOXHAM & LOUIS PHILIPPE, STUART The Devil Laughs LP
LP version. Much has been written about Young Marble Giants' small, perfect catalog, which contained roughly two-dozen songs, nearly each one a perfect gem. Less is known about his long wilderness years after the break-up of his first professional band. Stuart Moxham's next project, The Gist, chopped YMG's minimalism into a new sound. "This Is Love", "Public Girls", and "Fool For A Valentine" showed his songs to be razor-sharp, but the album's fragmented pieces were a step too far for some, though even the strangest, "Carnival Headache", when cast in sunlight by Alison Statton's combo Weekend, was as fine a song as any he'd written -- and "Love At First Sight" became a million-seller when covered by Etienne Daho. Then Stuart disappeared. A mid-90s resurgence led to fine albums done on low budgets, before more silence followed. The Devil Laughs, recorded a few years back, is a compelling addition to the canon of the 21st century songwriting. Stuart's generally unadorned musical presentation does not hinder his appreciation for the skills of Louis Philippe, whose iconic arrangements across an array of Él label albums inspire the fierce devotion of aficionados around the world. Nor does the unvarnished solidity of Stuart's arrangements deter Louis from hearing possibilities for their presentation in styles which take inspiration from the perfection of 1960s studio technology that led to the rise of Brian Wilson, Burt Bacharach, along with less-recognized names such as Bones Howe and Roy Halee. "Tidy Away" is Young Marble Giants redux, though the backing vocals hint at maturity which band didn't live to see. "Fighting To Lose", written with producer Ken Brake, would pass as a worthy B-side to "Bridge Over Troubled Water", and although the songs are otherwise Stuart's, Louis fans will delight at several, like "Love Hangover" and "Sky Over Water", which display his style and production genius as succinctly as anything on his own albums. The Devil Laughs is as out of its time as Colossal Youth (1980) was -- its subtle but immediate beauty, devoid of "rock", is a recording best understood in the light of those obscure groundbreakers who inspired it -- the faux barbershop vocals of Smile-era Beach Boys, the studio luster of Tom Wilson's work with Simon & Garfunkel, a dash of The Swingle Sisters and French chanson -- along with enough hints of Young Marble Giant's modernist folk abstraction to satisfy longtime fans. The Devil Laughs is a small masterpiece of pure expression.

TIPPEL, ANDREA Ich Und Sie 2CD
Ich Und Sie -- ein Roman aus dreibuchstabigen Wörtern (Me and Her -- a novel of three-letter-words) was a work Andrea Tippel started in 1993 and finished in 2009. As the title suggests it consists entirely of three-letter-words. Two CDs in full-color, six-panel DVD-sized digipak; illustrated with pages of the manuscripts of Ich Und Sie, a biographical text, chronology of the work in English by Marc Schulz, and the text "The Speaking Art of Andrea Tippel" by Dorothy Iannone, written in 2019 especially for this publication. Edition of 250.Andrea Tippel was born 1945 in Hirsau/Black Forest, and grew up as the middle of three sisters in Bremen. Her parents were the architects Maria Alexandra Mahlberg and Klaus Tippel. In 1969, she was a state-certified actress (Max-Reinhardt-Seminar in Vienna and Berlin), then studied philosophy and psychology in Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich. In 1971, Tippel moved to Berlin and started to create drawings, objects, composites, texts, and books, as well as a few oil paintings. In 1974 she had her first exhibition with Tomas Schmit, started to produce artist books in 1980, and editions for various galleries from 1987. She maintained close friendships with Suzanne Baumann, Henriette van Egten, Ludwig Gosewitz, Dorothy Iannone, Dieter Roth, Tomas Schmit, Jan Voss, and Emmett Williams. Tippel was appointed as a professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg in 1997, and co-founded the Dieter Roth Academy (DRA) in 2000. She passed away in 2012 in Berlin."... Here is a tale, a brilliant tale, one cannot deny, which, even as it astounds us through her perseverance, drives us crazy with a foreboding that this may well be an endless tale. And perhaps this purely personal response to the Speaking Art of Andrea Tippel may well have amused its creator who often found meanings which, understandably or not, had eluded others ... SCHMICKLER, MARCUS Richters Patterns 2CD
Double-CD collecting five of Marcus Schmickler's key-works composed and recorded between 2006 and 2016. "Richters Patterns" (2016), "Kemp Echoes" (2013), "E-UROPAS" (2006), "Fokker Bifurcations" (2014), and "Ata Oto" (2016). Full color digipak with eight-page booklet; edition of 400. "Richters Patterns" (2016) is a collaboration among Marcus Schmickler, artist Gerhard Richter, director Corinna Belz, and the Ensemble Musikfabrik. In 2011, Richter took an image of his work Abstract Painting and divided it vertically into strips and gave them to Belz who utilized specially developed software operations involving cuts, mirroring and reproduction to create a movie from these images. Schmickler and Belz worked in parallel, with the film and composition following their own independent logic. Schmickler's idea was to extend Richter's method to divide, mirror, repeat into sound and time. "Richters Patterns" was commissioned by Koeln Musik and had its premiere on September 9, 2016 at Cologne Philharmonic Hall. "Kemp Echoes" (2013) refers to a physical phenomenon in the ear discovered by physicist David Kemp in 1978. Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) are signals in the ear (that can be detected with high quality small microphones) that are emitted by the cochlea, either spontaneously or in response to stimuli (frequently clicks). Schmickler strived to create a piece that can seem "electronic" to the ear without actually utilizing electronics. "Fokker Bifurcations" (2014) marks a departure into microtonal works for keyboards and mallets and maintains the composer's penchant for juxtaposed fixed pitches with pitch continua. Recorded live at ISSUE Project Room, Brooklyn on Nov 7, 2014. The recording has been edited for this publication. "E-UROPAS / Plurality of Centers" (2006): "Shall we say goodbye to modernism? I dare to confront the myths of new music in this music theater creation. Layers containing the manifestos of Cornelius Cardew, Guy Debord, and sound materials from six decades of the avant-garde create a collage that utilizes some of the formal principles guiding John Cage's Europera V". Produced and recorded at the WDR Radio in Cologne, Germany, the Akustisches Abreaktionsspiel (Aktion 38b) is "neither a radioplay nor a work of music. It merely portrays the acoustic part of an 'abreaktionsspiel' (a play of abreaction). the special and specific usage of the acoustic possibilities are in the foreground, while the visual part of the play is communicated by a narrator." A prime example of the intense and noisy wildness of Nitsch's early actions employing scream-choirs, beating, whistles, chaotic Austrian folklore juxtapositions, rough brass sections, and dissonant strings. BROOKS, BILLY Windows of the Mind LP
LP version. Wewantsounds reissue of Billy Brooks's much sought-after album Windows of the Mind, released in 1974 on Ray Charles's Crossover Records. The album was co-produced by Charles and features such heavy players as Herman Riley, Calvin Keys, and Larry Gales. There's not a huge amount of information to be found about trumpet player Billy Brooks. A solid session musician who'd been around since the '50s, he played with the likes of Lionel Hampton, Cal Tjader, and of course Ray Charles, who signed him to his sub label Crossover Records in the early '70s to release Windows of the Mind. Interestingly, Brooks also appears on Bea Benjamin's 1976 cult classic African Songbird produced by Dollard Brand. Windows of the Mind released in 1974 remains Brooks' only solo album. Windows of the Mind was recorded in Los Angeles and co-produced by Ray Charles. It is a skillful, brass-led mix of jazz and funk performed by such cult players as bassist Larry Gales (Thelonious Monk), drummer Clarence Johnston (Freddie Roach, James Moody), saxophonist Herman Riley (Side Effect, Pleasure, Earth Wind & Fire, Letta Mbulu), guitarists Jef Lee (Roy Ayers, Sylvia Striplin) and cult player Calvin Keys of Black Jazz Records fame. From the groove of "Rockin Julius", "Shetter Cheeze", and "Black Flag" to the mid-tempo jazz mood of "Cooling It" and "C.P. Time" and the cinematic brass pyrotechnics of "The Speech Maker", "Windows of the Mind" is a superb funked-up big band jazz album. Windows of the Mind did reasonably well among the jazz circles when it came out but its fate would change fifteen years later when, in 1990, A Tribe Called Quest heavily sampled its closing track "Fourty Days" for their own "Luck of Lucien" featured on the group's debut album People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm (1990). The album revolutionized hip-hop and "Luck of Lucien" became one of the album's highlights, thus cementing the reputation of Billy Brooks original LP among DJs and collectors. Original LPs now change hands for a few hundred dollars. Wewantsounds now make this landmark album available again in partnership with The Ray Charles Foundation. Newly remastered audio; comes with original artwork.

CARPENTER, JOHN Dark Star (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Expanded & Remastered) LP + 7"
2020 restock. An underground classic! The original motion picture soundtrack for John Carpenter's Dark Star (1974), with added bonuses that are sure to satisfy all cult sci-fi soundtrack completists of the galaxy (and beyond). This limited-edition release includes an LP and a 7". The former is a remastered version of the original motion picture soundtrack consisting of incidental music, sound effects, John Carpenter's synth experimentations, dialogue excerpts, and vintage interferences extracted directly from the film roll. The 7" is red with a yellow label circled in black (in pure beach ball alien fashion) and contains "Ode to a Bell Jar" remade by loyal Carpenter collaborator Alan Howarth (Escape from New York (1981), Christine (1983), Big Trouble in Little China (1986), They Live (1988)...), the fan favorite "Benson Arizona" remade by Dominik Hauser, the very sought-after "When Twilight Falls on NGC 891" by Martin Segundo and the Scintilla Strings (in the real world, James Clarke's "Spring Bossa" (1968)), as well as endless loops of sound effects from the movie to turn your house into your very own scout ship. Plus a very secret hidden bonus track! It all comes in slick Thermostellar Triggering packaging with brand-new artwork and invisible hyperdrive electronics -- the best way to relive the Dark Star adventure and celebrate John Carpenter's first directorial feature film, co-written by (and starring!) all-around legend Dan O'Bannon (Alien (1979), Lifeforce (1985), The Return of the Living Dead (1985)). Let there be light!
