MAGIC CASTLES Sun Reign LP
LP version. 180 gram gold vinyl. Minneapolis psych-rockers Magic Castles are back with a new album, Sun Reign, making an exciting return after founder and songwriter Jason Edmonds suffered a near fatal car accident in November 2019. Magic Castles are well-versed in the ways of psychedelically-inclined folk-rock. Edmonds's smooth vocal harmonies float above the guitars, creating a lush, almost Byrds-esque soundscape. The layered arrangements incorporate Farfisa organ, synths, and dreamy string arrangements. Sun Reign is the band's fourth release on Anton Newcombe's label A Recordings Ltd. Ironically similar to Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Magic Castles have been plagued by lineup changes over the years. Due to this and other factors, in 2016, Edmonds, a single father, decided to take a short hiatus from regular live shows and touring to focus on his family. During that time, (2016-2019) Edmonds, an introverted multi-instrumentalist, continued to record new material in his studio, and also record with a new band at Neil Weir's studio Blue Bell Knoll, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The results of these sessions are the current release, Sun Reign. In November of 2019, tragedy struck and Edmonds was seriously injured in a car accident that required hospitalization and surgery. Friends started a GoFundMe that raised over $20k USD for the uninsured musician's hospital bills, showing an incredible outpouring of love and support for him and his family. Fortunately, Edmonds has made a complete recovery from his injuries and has bounced back remarkably well. In early 2020, Edmonds managed to finish the remaining work on the album Sun Reign, including a previously unreleased song, "Surmise", penned by guitarist Jermiah Doering, and a rare cover of a moody 1966 garage rock song "Ode to the Wind" by Danny and the Counts. Edmonds also began working with a booking agency, planning a return tour to Europe with the band to support the new album. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Due to the global pandemic crisis of Covid-19, the album was delayed until 2021, and the promising tour was cancelled. In May of 2020, Minneapolis police killed George Floyd two blocks from Edmonds's home, which incited riots across the country. The protests led to the burning of Minneapolis, where a long-time music venue and many other buildings were lost. Edmonds' studio was not destroyed although many nearby buildings were. Edmonds is a known supporter of Black Lives Matter.

MICROCORPS XMIT LP
MICROCORPS is the new project by artist and musician Alex Tucker (Grumbling Fur, Alexander Tucker, Imbogodom) exploring electronics, cello and voice. The debut release XMIT is an eight-track album featuring collaborations with Gazelle Twin, Nik Void, Simon Fisher Turner, and Astrud Steehouder. Tucker's ever-evolving sound world continues to unfold with this collection of harsh realms centered around processed electronic systems, strings, and vocal manipulations. On the new album, MICROCORPS employs altered voices, sound synthesis and atomized beat constructions. In a move away from previous projects XMIT investigates erasing the self, removing obvious traits of the hand and voice, and allowing a focus on the humanoid rather than the human. Instead of recognizable lyrics and coherent imagery, MICROCORPS evolved synthesized voices to generate alternate characters. He expands, "I was investigating how language brings our world into being and how manipulating the actual grain of the voice could open up momentary shifts in perception." Each track is born from a balance between composition and improvisation within set parameters. At each stage audio is heavily processed and then reconfigured. Setting up systems that are non-repeatable, where decisions can be premeditated and intuitive but never the same with each performance, using hardware and instruments outside of the computer to make live stereo takes that have limited room for editing and mixing. "I'd been looking into combining dream music with machine rhythms, but there are so many great examples out there of both music forms, so I started to cut up the drones and really filter the drum patterns to create a hybrid space." The album artwork features manipulated ink drawings by Tucker that originally featured in his recent comic ENTITY REUNION 2. XMIT refers to a time in which information both physical and nonphysical transfers at an alarming rate beyond human comprehension into an age which is at once banal and terrifyingly alien.

CROWLEY, ADRIAN The Watchful Eye Of The Stars LP
"One stormy night in Ireland, Adrian Crowley's brother brought home a wounded crow. After taking care of it for a time, the crow flew away on its own, leaving an impression behind: Crowley wrote a story, which would later become the aptly titled 'Crow Song' on this, his brand new record and ninth studio album The Watchful Eye Of The Stars. Suffused with a hazy and surreal quality, Crowley describes Watchful Eye's poignant narratives as those which insisted themselves upon him. After the fact, it seemed these songs came to him more or less fully formed. 'It's a beautiful and mysterious thing,' he says. Perhaps it is a tendency to hold onto memories that allows him to unleash them lyrically in completion. For Crowley, the creative process is an organic event rather than a practice he feels compelled to regulate or control. He approaches lyrics much like he does short story writing. In making the album, Crowley moved between studio and at home recording, while John Parish (Aldous Harding, PJ Harvey) produced. The pair worked from tracks made initially by Crowley on a charity shop 3/4 size nylon string guitar or Mellotron: 'In this way, John wanted to keep some of the magic of that first take,' says Crowley. Contradictions and complexities are left intact, initial recordings were limited to one or two takes, and the songs feel more like a dream recounted upon waking. These raw beginnings were then fleshed out more in the studio with Parish and additional musicians. Jim Barr of Portishead contributed double bass and was brought in to engineer parts of Watchful Eye in Bristol. Parish himself contributed instrumentation as well, his signature sense of drama lending Crowley's work a new edge overall without disrupting its minimalism. Having members of Crash Ensemble in Dublin to record for only a few days' time, Crowley recalls staying up all night to write string parts for 'Northbound Stowaway,' which was recorded the following morning. Final track 'Take Me Driving' opens with an arpeggiation, then unfolds into a swaying, melancholy outro. It highlights Crowley's skill at transforming a quiet, repeated phrase into something magnificent, mysterious, and wholly captivating -- a story. Crowley leaves the listener here in his world, driving in a car with a flighty companion, unsure of where they're going, but continuing nonetheless as he steps out the passenger side."

FUZZY DUCK Fuzzy Duck LP
2021 repress. Be With Records present a reissue of Fuzzy Duck's self-titled album, originally released in 1971. A memorable name with an outstanding cover, Fuzzy Duck is a classic slice of underground London art rock and melodic psychedelia. Originally released on MAM in 1971, it's truly a musical force of infectious riffs and fiery solos, sharp tempo changes, a tight rhythm section, and heavy, Hammond-drenched grooves. With echoes of Spencer Davis Group, early Grand Funk, and Vanilla Fudge, it comes on like a heavier Soft Machine or Caravan. No wonder Fuzzy Duck's cult appeal has endured. The album features Mick Hawksworth (Five Day Week Straw People, Andromeda) on bass, acoustic 12-string, electric cello, and some of the vocal duties, and also Roy "Daze" Sharland (Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Spice) on organ and electric piano. Accompanying those two were Paul Francis on drums and percussion, and Grahame White on guitars and the rest of the vocals. Originally released in an edition of 500, Fuzzy Duck became legendary all over the world through a holy trinity of scarcity, personnel, and its sheer brilliance. The album kicks off with a heavy, bass-fueled, Hammond rocker titled "Time Will Be Your Doctor". This is pure hard-edged blues rock, brilliantly played. Its drum break intro was sampled by DJ Premier for Gang Starr's "Mostly Tha Voice" on 1994's legendary Hard To Earn. At nearly seven minutes long, "Mrs. Prout" follows incorporating more psych-leaning guitar and drawn-out keyboards à la Ray Manzarek. "Just Look Around You" is propulsive folk-rock with a soaring, proto power-pop chorus, backed by frenetic organ and heavy bass. Back comes the heavy, strung-out psych to both close out side one with "Afternoon Out" and kick off side two with "More Than I Am". "Country Boy" quenches the thirst for rhythm and melody, only the lyrics and vibe are wonderfully creepy. The groove suddenly cuts and drops into a more sinister tempo before the band pick up speed and toss you back again into the opening jam, this time with organ. The final, fully fleshed out track is the majestic "In Our Time", which oscillates between endless organ-driven boogie and heavenly, genuinely moving vocals. Infamous instrumental cut "A Word from Big D" rounds out the album. Yes, that's the band jamming with duck quack sound effects accompanying the music. Mastered by Simon Francis; cut by Pete Norman. Remastered from the original analog tapes.

RESIDENTS, THE Freak Show (Preserved Edition) 3CD
"Formed in the early 1970s, The Residents have been charting a unique path through the musical landscape for almost fifty years. From far-out, experimental recordings to highly conceptual, innovative multi-platform projects, the band refuses to stand still, and continues to move in several different directions at once. Produced with The Cryptic Corporation using archival tapes supplied by the group themselves, this package explores and expands the classic 1990 album, which formed the basis of a move into multi-media work which characterized The Residents' '90s output. Freak Show explores a series of character studies of unfortunates and unloveables, all of whom have their origin in The Residents' own childhood memories of travelling 'freak shows', such as they were. This 3CD set includes the original album and related contemporary tracks, an entire CD detailing the evolution of the album's musical content throughout 1990 and live interpretations of all of the album's tracks, including the legendary 'Ty's Freak Show' performance. 28 unreleased recordings in all! LOUISE, SARAH Earth Bow CD
"At first glance, Sarah Louise might seem an unlikely candidate to credit technology as inspiration for her new album, Earth Bow. After all, she has lived in rural Appalachia for the last decade, foraging numerous species of wild mushroom, concocting medicine from plants she gathers, and performing what she terms 'Earth Practices' to deepen her relationship with the natural world. But it is precisely her ability to find connections between false binaries that makes this album so novel and richly immersive. Louise conceived Earth Bow as an interconnected ecosystem, meant to evolve, interact and grow. Known for her inventive guitar playing, vocal harmonies and electronic experiments, it was her use of the SP-404SX sampler that became a primary inspiration for the album's woven nature. 'Improvising with the 404 during live shows allows me to collaborate with the music as a living system, almost the way generative music works,' she says. 'I kept finding more and more samples that worked together and realized I wanted to connect the entire record -- and that there were many ways it could be connected.' Through this process, what began as eight core songs blossomed into two sweeping suites. Samples -- denizens of her electronic forest -- move around the record with changing context like words in a sestina or phrases in the I Ching, revealing new connections with each listen. Mesmeric sounds abound on Earth Bow, from analog synth tones, to digitally manipulated sonics that she stretches and layers with a painterly touch. These electronic sounds inhabit the same environment as field recordings, ceremonial percussion, guitars and empathic vocals, weaving together her vast and borderless influences into an enveloping world. 'I want this record to take people on a journey through the wonders of our incredible planet, to help people feel held by the mysteries of nature,' she enthuses. 'I believe music can heal.' After a string of celebrated releases on Thrill Jockey, Sarah Louise is self-releasing Earth Bow on her new imprint of the same name."

CAUSA SUI Szabodelico 2LP
Double LP version. Something different from Causa Sui. While Causa Sui have always had one foot in heavy psychedelic rock, they've had the other one deep in a wide variety of esoteric styles. On this set, that other dimension of the band is being explored full-scale. Szabodelico paints with a colorful palette, both compositionally and sonically -- digging deep into an assortment of cultures, eras and sounds with a true crate-digger mindset. Throughout their 15-year life-span, Causa Sui has always been about seeking out new directions, exploring the past and the present in a way that's unique at each step of their subtle progression -- forging new paths into an existing map. Szabodelico feels like discovering a small room under the stairs of your own house: familiar, yet new and exciting. Their latest vision is an elegantly zoned-out version of itself: a turn inward. Anti-bombastic, yet rich with ecstatic harmonics and dynamics. The band stringed together a long series of sessions in 2019 and early 2020 in their studio in Odense, often prioritizing playful first takes and good vibes rather than clinical perfection. Sparsely dubbed and mixed with a natural, full-bodied flavor by Jonas Munk during the summer of 2020, each track has its own aesthetic. There's no simple equation to sum up the 13 individual parts of the album, but as a whole it creates an entity that's as complete as each of its parts. From the windblown opener "Echoes of Light", to the closing slow-motion epic "Merging Waters" you'll find yourself asking "where did the time go?" The answer of course is: Szabodelico.

COLIDER ->- LP
2019 release. Whirlwind of a debut album from Copenhagen underground phenomenon Collider. High intensity guitar music with psychedelic, dreamy elements of boy/girl vocals and even a flute. The soundscape points towards starry shoegaze and '90s slacker rock, while progressive shifts and a daring, illogical approach to composition places the band in their very own fusion genre. Based on paranormal, astral experiences and a chaotic way of life, the universe of Collider is both expanding and enclosing. A noisy backdrop with soft, hazy melodies in the foreground, occasionally interrupted by snarling outbreaks is the result of an expressive and sensible way of four young human beings playing music together.

GLOBAL VILLAGE TRUCKING COMPANY Smiling Revolution 2CD
"Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of a new re-mastered two-disc anthology by Global Village Trucking Company, Smiling Revolution. Between March 1972 and their final performance at The Nottingham Boat Club in August 1975, the Global Village Trucking Company played 390 gigs. In that time, they gained many friends, fans and admirers. A Global Village gig was always a special occasion, full of unexpected moments and often passages of true inspiration. They were constantly pushing and stretching the boundaries, with a huge appetite for improvisation that often took them to giddy musical heights. It was for good reason that they were frequently referred to as Britain's answer to the Grateful Dead. And amongst this there was also a lot of damn fine playing, a repertoire of outstanding songs, a charismatic frontman, and an ability to take the audience with them to wherever they chose to go that night. They never lost sight of giving people a good time, and very few people left a show without a smile on their face. Forty years on, Smiling Revolution has been compiled by the band and gathers together the band's legendary album as originally intended, their tracks from the Greasy Truckers release, John Peel session tracks and other previously unreleased delights, all superbly remastered by acclaimed producer Robin Millar. It also features lavishly illustrated booklets and an absorbing essay detailing the story of this unique group."

NAS It Was Written 2LP
2021 repress. 'Illmatic, the 1994 studio debut of Nasir 'Nas' Jones, was more than just a critical success for the Queensbridge-based rapper. At a time when East Coast hip-hop was increasingly being taken less seriously than their West Coast counterparts, Illmatic's raw jazz and soul-based production, dire atmosphere and lyrics, coupled with Nas' uncompromising flow was integral in restoring interest in the East Coast as a hotbed of hip-hop artistry. Along with key releases from Wu-Tang Clan and Notorious B.I.G., it shifted attention away from the funky, dayglo synth-based G-funk coming out of California and back to the grimy streets of New York. After such an unprecedented debut record, expectations were understandably high for Nas' follow-up. What came next threw critics and fans for a loop, but was no less influential than Illmatic, and would become the most commercially successful album in the entirety of Nas' discography. The 1996 sophomore follow-up was titled It Was Written, and in contrast to the urban bleakness of his debut, had Nas dipping his toes into the world of mafioso rap. Amidst production from heavy hitters like Trackmasters, Dr. Dre, L.E.S., Havoc of Mobb Deep, and Illmatic-collaborator DJ Premier, among others, Nas weaves evocative narratives of gang warfare, downtrodden neighborhoods, drug deals gone awry, and gangsta triumph, against a backdrop of samples from Sam Cooke, Etta James, the Isley Brothers, and even Chuck Mangione. It Was Written was not hard up for top-tier guests either, featuring major guest turns from Lauryn Hill and Joel 'JoJo' Hailey of K-Ci & JoJo. It also introduced the world to The Firm, the brief Nas-led supergroup featuring rappers AZ, Foxy Brown, and Cormega. It even managed to cause some minor controversy in the hip-hop community for its collaboration with West Coast producer Dr. Dre, at a time when the East Coast/West Coast rap feud was reaching a fever pitch, briefly attracting the ire of one Tupac Shakur. Not only was It Was Written received warmly by critics, but became a major commercial success, reaching the top of the Billboard 200 charts, reaching platinum sales status four times, and alongside albums like Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, helped usher in the era of mafioso rap in the mainstream. It rendered chart hits out of singles like the Eurhythmics-mimicking 'Street Dreams', and the Grammy-nominated 'If I Ruled The World (Imagine That)', and proved to be a major influence on artists like Kendrick Lamar, Lupe Fiasco, and many more."

DR. JOHN In The Right Place LP
2021 restock. "Pressed on splatter-colored vinyl housed in a recreation of the triple gatefold jacket from the original 1973 pressing. When Malcolm John Rebbenack Jr., best known by his stage name Dr. John, first hit the scene in the late 1960s after many years as a Wrecking Crew session musician, he developed his craft the back of an eccentric presentation. His swampy, and frequently psychedelic blend of New Orleans-inspired boogie-woogie rock paired with a macabre character heavily inspired by voodoo priests and Mardi Gras, and a highly theatrical stage show to match. Across four studio albums Dr. John cultivated this stage presence and developed a strong cult following. As Dr. John entered the 1970s however, this stage presence would undergo a major change. In 1972, Dr. John abruptly switched gears from muddy psychedelia with the release of Dr. John's Gumbo, which saw the performer covering a selection of New Orleans rhythm & blues standards. The backing band remained the same, but the sound was a slicker and more traditional fare that undoubtedly disappointed the cult following that fell in love with Dr. John's voodoo antics, but was a hit with critics and commercial audiences. Dr. John's Gumbo was Dr. John's second Billboard chart success (reaching #112) and would be named one of the '500 Greatest Albums of All Time' by Rolling Stone. Building on this success, the next year Dr. John continued upon this path, releasing In The Right Place in 1973. Produced by the legendary producer Allen Toussaint, In The Right Place took the more polished sounds developed on Gumbo, and traded psychedelia for New Orleans funk, for a sound that still pulsated with the spirit of Louisiana, but was imminently danceable as well. In The Right Place was not only a critical hit, but marked Dr. John's greatest commercial success, reaching #24 on the album charts, and rendering a Top 10 hit out of the title track."

WATERS, MUDDY After The Rain LP
2021 repress. "The second of two electric-blues albums released on Chess Records and Cadet Concept imprint in the late '60s, Muddy Waters' After the Rain has achieved cult-like status amongst blues fans in the years since his death in 1983. After taking a backlash from critics with first attempt at adopting psychedelic influences on Electric Mud, Muddy made adjustments for the follow-up, despite keeping a majority of the same session players. This time, he toned down the psychedelic elements and put them in balance with his classic Chicago blues sound, and the results yield some vintage tracks that glow with fuzzy guitars and bass: 'I Am the Blues,' 'Ramblin' Mind,' 'Bottom of the Sea,' and 'Blues Trouble.' After being out of print for years, Get On Down is proud to present this rare classic from Muddy Waters pulled from the original masters and presented on LP with Japanese-style OBI and double-sided poster."

GENIUS/GZA Liquid Swords Instrumentals 2LP
2021 repress. Limited edition black and white vinyl. "There are many reasons why Wu-Tang Clan rapper GZA's second solo album Liquid Swords is considered one of the greatest hip-hop records of all time. Critics and historians point to GZA's raw, and starkly poetic lyrics which featured references to chess, crime and philosophy, as well as superb guest performances from his Wu-Tang Clan contemporaries. One can't comment on Liquid Swords' brilliance however without touching upon the production, courtesy of Wu-Tang's own mastermind RZA. Behind a hazy and murky backdrop of rare samples and classic boom-bap beats, RZA crafted a bleak atmosphere of urban dystopia for GZA's esoteric rhymes to flourish in, cribbing from a wide panoply of sources ranging from the dusty soul of The Bar-Kays and Ohio Players, the nostalgic jazz of Cannonball Adderley and Willie Mitchell, and even the experimental weirdness of Mothers Of Invention. In a retrospective 5-star AllMusic.com review of Liquid Swords, writer Steve Huey said of RZA's production: ''The Genius' eerie calm is a great match for RZA's atmospheric production, which is tremendously effective in this context; the kung fu dialogue here is among the creepiest he's put on record, and he experiments quite a bit with stranger sounds and more layered tracks.' These instrumentals, peppered with frequent interludes of dialogue from the classic samurai flick Shogun Assassin, became the core of the GZA's acclaimed sophomore LP. The full Liquid Swords instrumentals are now available in a white and black vinyl pressing, a nod to the chessboard art synonymous with the album's cover art. All tracks have been restored, with re-mastered audio from the original source tapes. Available on 2-LP, with the look of a silk-screened jacket we are excited to bring to you these Liquid Swords Instrumentals."

DIAMOND AND THE PSYCHOTIC NEUROTICS Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop 2LP
2021 repress. "Long out of print, and even impossible to find on vinyl at the time of its release, Get on Down presents the classic Diamond D debut Stunts, Blunts and Hip Hop. As the album title states, this album is one long party from beginning to end. Diamond shines both on the mic and behind the boards creating one of the greatest hip hop albums ever made. Coming in at over an hour long Stunts never has a dull moment, Diamond along with the Psychotic Neurotic's and his D.I.T.C brethren are able to make each song or interlude stand out and play through without any skip worthy moments. Although Diamond D handles the majority of the album's production, others such as Large Professor, Q-Tip, Jazzy Jay, Showbiz, and DJ Mark the 45 King co-produce on several tracks. The music he was making in 1992 cemented Diamond as one of the best producers in the game."

A selection of tracks collected from the albums Totem, Pandora's Box, and Luna Tide, placed together as a possible alternative album in this alternate reality. Time Lapse used to refer to a method of filming, by taking a series of single pictures over a period of time and then putting them together to show the action happening quickly. Plot: Urban decay, on the concourse, escapism via drugs, machines choking the arteries. A Moscow apartment, economic refugees, the human menagerie. Zen and the art of vehicles, crucified by the highway, on the road to... Fallen statues in public parks, the prince of narcosis, to the sea of tranquility. VA Dust On The Nettles: A Journey Through The British Underground Folk Scene 1967-72 3CD BOX
2015 release. "With 63 tracks and a total running time of just under four hours, Dust On The Nettles examines the metamorphosis that British folk underwent during the late 1960s, when the influence of psychedelia and the counterculture saw the idiom being twisted into all kinds of new and exotic shapes, as the finger-in-the-ear folk clubs of yore were inexorably drawn into a brave new world of Arts Labs, free festivals and the nascent college/university circuit. Our anthology incorporates the various overlapping strands of the underground folk scene: the acid folk experimenters, the folklorists and trad song updaters, the more metaphysical element of the burgeoning singer/songwriter genre, the newly-electric folk rockers, the elemental paganism exemplified by Comus and The Wicker Man, even the early 1970s Jesus music movement that spawned the likes of the sitar-wielding Parchment. Balancing the familiar with the obscure, we feature acknowledged brand leaders like Fairport Convention, The Incredible String Band, Pentangle and Steeleye Span alongside acts who made music purely for the local communities that nurtured them: Shide & Acorn on the Isle of Wight, Folkal Point in Bristol, Music Box in Coventry, Chrissie Quayle in Cornwall. We incorporate a large number of recordings that weren't issued at the time, sample impossibly rare albums by the likes of Oberon, Dry Heart and Benjamin Delaney Lion, and feature key recordings from a number of bands who underpinned the thriving live scene of the era. Housed in a clambox featuring a lavishly illustrated and annotated 36-page booklet, the painstakingly-assembled Dust On The Nettles is surely the most comprehensive and wide-ranging anthology to appear thus far of the UK underground hippie folk movement of the late 1960s/early 1970s."

VA Oh! You Pretty Things: Glam Queens And Street Urchins 1970-76 3CD
"We focus on the twin central strands of Glam Rock: the cerebral and the visceral, with the artier, experimental element of the scene joined by the Ladbroke Grove street rockers and the Steve Marriott-channelling chirpy Cockney geezer street urchins, many of whom had been to drama school and knew how to strike a pose. We examine the trash-aesthetic fault line that joined the seedy, no-longer-swinging London of the early Seventies with New York's sleazy demi-monde and the incorrigible hucksters of Hollywood. The latter were led by Kim Fowley, ably assisted by LA scenester Rodney Bingenheimer, who opened Rodney's English Disco (allegedly at Bowie's suggestion), where the underage groupies, teenage runaways and glitter queens of Sunset Strip hung out with visiting British rock royalty and the likes of Alice Cooper and a wasted Iggy Pop. Incorporating huge British bands (Roxy Music, Slade, Sweet etc) and the leading US acts on the scene (New York Dolls, Jobriath, Lou Reed, Iggy & The Stooges), our four-hour anthology of prettiest stars, prima ballerinas and real cool traders covers all bases. Some acts were defined purely by glam, others (ELO, Strawbs, Thin Lizzy) merely paid the neighborhood a fleeting visit, while the likes of Despair and England's Glory would only find their niche after the more streetwise element of glam mutated into punk. Big hits, inexplicable misses, seminal glam texts, cult classics, key album tracks, alternative versions and even a clutch of previously unreleased but essential recordings: Oh! You Pretty Things -- housed in a clamshell box that contains a 40-page booklet of amazing photos and incredible stories -- assembles all these and more to act as the definitive primer of a relatively short-lived but glorious musical and pop-cultural phenomenon."

GUIDED BY VOICES Earth Man Blues CD
"Is it really a musical?! The 33rd Guided By Voices album, Earth Man Blues, is a magical cinematic rock album, full of dramatic and surreal twists and turns. Lyrics and liner notes trace the growth of young Harold Admore Harold through a coming of age and a reckoning with darkness. Vivid scenes appear: snapshots of youth, fantastical nightmares, unknown worlds. The music hasn't softened a bit. One will hear the impossibly perfect melodies and word play that you expect from Robert Pollard, with the band playing at peak-heavy. 'Trust Them Now' rocks like an instant classic, 'The Batman Sees The Ball' is lean, mean rock muscle. Opener 'Made Man' tears and slashes at the ears and heart. Sweeping, colossal tracks like 'Lights Out (In Memphis, Egypt)' and 'Dirty Kid School' stretch far beyond the ordinary vocabulary of rock. Doug Gillard's brilliant guitar playing explodes out of the speakers. The rhythm section of Kevin March and Mark Shue, always strong and reliable, has grown into a breathing composite organism. Along with Bobby Bare, Jr on rhythm guitar, they drive the songs and make one's head shake. Producer Travis Harrison ties the talents of the band together, once again recorded remotely and individually, pandemic-style. This group brings to life the sounds in Pollard's technicolor imagination."

GIRLS IN SYNTHESIS Now Here's An Echo From Your Future (Grey Vinyl) LP
2021 restock; LP version. Grey vinyl. Following a steady stream of ultra-limited 7" singles, that were collated together in 2019 for the Pre/Post: A Collection 2016-2018 (HARB 204LP, 2018) on Louder Than War, Girls In Synthesis's highly-anticipated debut album arrives. Since forming in late 2016, Girls In Synthesis have quickly forged a fearsome reputation as one of the most exciting and volatile live acts in London. In equal parts frantic, considered, ear-splitting, and melodic, the group take their cues from the early DIY punk and post-punk pioneers to keep everything in-house. Now Here's An Echo From Your Future is their first release for fabled experimental punk label Harbinger Sound and finds the band advancing their sound, making subtle but experimental shifts in texture and tone, helping to break free from the shackled straight-jacket of punk rock that, to be fair, never really held them down in the first place. Across the album's ten songs, Girls In Synthesis explore a wide range of sensations and sounds as the album detonates into life with opening track "Arterial Movements" in a screeching flurry of over-driven guitar and hammering drums. The contrast between the slow, mesmerizing look into aging and dying in "Human Frailty", to the aggressive attack on the rise of the right-wing in "They're Not Listening" shows a wide range of subjects and reactions aggressively tackled. Mental health in a fast-moving, unforgiving world, media control, the divide widening between the have and the have nots, the class divide, the blaming of the poor, NHAEFYF bristles with an unforgiving frustration and temper. The recording of NHAEFYF started at Rockit Studio, Hull in April 2019 during days off on the UK tour to promote the Pre/Post compilation album. The Hull sessions were engineered by studio owner and local musician Sean Tomlinson. The remainder of the album was recorded and engineered by the band throughout summer 2019 in a large rehearsal room at Gun Factory studios, Homerton. Production and finishing touches were completed at GIS bassist John's S.I.C.K Studio in Hither Green. The album was mixed by long-time band collaborator and engineer, Max Walker. In their few years of existence, fans and critics alike have been stunned by the bands pure visceral and punishing wall of sound, as well as applauding the groups way of making a GIS show an all-inclusive experience; playing from within the crowd to create a unique and awe-inspiring spectacle.

RAZOR BOYS Atlanta 1978 LP
"Atlanta in the mid-1970s was not exactly the place you'd expect punk and glam rock to sprout, but with a little research into the quality of proto-punk bands descending upon the city during the 1973-74 era (NY Dolls, Stooges, Teenage Lust), it's not hard to believe there would be a few brave souls who would take up the torch for dangerous and loose rock n' roll savagery and stake their claim as pioneers of this classic sound, well before it caught on elsewhere below the Mason-Dixon Line. So as history would have it, there wasn't much real record label action that took chances on the very few real punk bands that dared tread these grounds, otherwise you'd already know the Razor Boys pretty well by now. With roots as far back as 1975, predating all the debut punk records released world-wide, Razor Boys were quite the anomaly, especially in the Deep South, and their outrageous and androgynous sleazy glam look wasn't helping them win over many converts in the Allman Brothers/Lynyrd Skynyrd-saturated cover band circuit either. Always honing their craft on the dangerous and damned side of the rock n' roll spectrum, these guys had a very distinct look that was somehow stuck in time between the post-NY Dolls glam era, and the upcoming LA 'Hair Metal' look, but at least five years before that LA scene took root. The music on the other hand, is white-knuckled, trashy rock n' roll at it's finest, delivered with pure dereliction, and always a side of extra sleaze. But make no mistake, these raw-dog recordings have very little of the trappings you'd associate with 80s pop metal, and definitely lean hard on the punkish rockers, with nary a tame song to be found across either side of the LP. It's too bad that these guys were so ahead of their time, as the studio recordings contained on this LP from 1978 will attest, the Razor Boys took their debaucherously seedy song material and combined it with air-tight punk precision, and dropped it into a world that just wasn't ready."

GORLS, THE Fall In Love 1992-93 LP
"This one has truly been a long-time-coming. As huge fans of the early '90s Seattle trash rock sound, stumbling upon The Night Kings in a sea of stale grunge and alternative pap in 1992 was just what the doctor ordered. To this day, my hairs still stand on end when the guitar from 'Black Fluid' revs into gear, which was love at first blast, and from that day forward, seeking out anything music-wise released in the in the Rob Vasquez universe was nothing short of prerequisite. Soon enough, the Night Kings Increasing Our High LP quickly took dominance of the turntable, as the legend of this wirey, 'Shit-O-Fonic' guitar sound enveloped our brain, and the crude and sub-primitive 'artwork' took hold of our eyes and hearts. Singles and EPs gushed forward from such respectable imprints as In The Red, Regal Select, Estrus, Bag of Hammers, and Bad Vibe, and we rushed to find them all. Following the Vasquez trail soon led to discovering his previous band The Nights And Days from the mid-late '80s, as well as numerous (and seemingly in the pre-internet era, 'endless') modern side projects such as Man Tee Mans, Chintz Devils, Ape Lost, Pissed Off Zombies, Right On, Nice Smile, and of course, The Gorls. Formed by core members Rob Vasquez and Dawn Johnson, and joined by Donnie Hilstadt (ex-Statics, future Dutchess & Duke drummer), and Dylan Maiden (ex-Night Kings), the Gorls blasted out of the gate on their own new imprint, Dope Records in early 1993, and quickly followed up their debut split 7" with only one more 3-track EP before completely disappearing, and leaving a huge void in their wake. Which brings us to 2020 . . . With 8 of the 12 tracks here previously unreleased, it's a crucial and desperately needed blast of the best part of the '90s sound, and an essential brick in the 'Budget Rock pantheon' of 1990s punk history. Pressed in a first edition of 500 copies, with a printed inner sleeve full of photos and an interview with lead singer Dawn Johnson, The Gorls debut LP is a long time coming, we're so excited its finally come to fruition, and before we ramble too long, you'd better grab a copy, we're so excited for you to hear their incredible version of The Victims 'Television Addict' it's gonna really knock your socks off. RIYL: Night Kings, Bratmobile, Nights and Days, Man Tee Mans, Skinned Teen, Calamity Jane, Flathead, Fall-Outs."

"All-new album by Robin Storey aka Rapoon. Founded in 1992 after Storey left Zoviet France, Rapoon soon became an outstanding ethno-dark ambient project that has gained a cult following all over the world. More than 80 albums have been released over those nearly 30 years, some more beat driven, others more playful and with ambient sounds and ethnic influences. Rapoon has never stopped evolving -- think of Cultural Forgeries, an album full of unplugged acoustic music. Or Downgliding, full of compositions on the piano. Recent Klanggalerie albums include Waiting by the River, an album that introduced vocals to the Rapoon sound, or Little Rocket Man which was inspired by the political situation in 2018 with Trump as president in the United States. In these ancient Times has been in the works for many years and presents dark atmospheres, percussion and vocals. Maybe one of your future Rapoon favourites."

GROUPER The Man Who Died in His Boat LP
2021 repress; LP version. "When I was a teenager the wreckage of a sailboat washed up on the shore of Agate Beach. The remains of the vessel weren't removed for several days. I walked down with my father to peer inside the boat cabin. Maps, coffee cups, and clothing were strewn around inside. I remember looking only briefly, wilted by the feeling that I was violating some remnant of this man's presence by witnessing the evidence of its failure. Later I read a story about him in the paper. It was impossible to know what had happened. The boat had never crashed or capsized. He had simply slipped off somehow, and the boat, like a riderless horse, eventually came back home. Subdued unleash their crushing debut album and not a moment too soon. In these dark and bleak days of 2020, they deliver a perfect album of classic anarcho punk with gothic tinges. Impassioned vocals, raging guitar work that ranges from straight ahead to every-so tinted flanged sounds mix with a locked in, energetic and relentless rhythm section. There are moments of quiet and calm, spoken-word vocals and metallic edges that just add to the tension and intensity. If someone told you that this was released in 1986 on Mortarhate, you wouldn't be surprised. This album, along with Bad Breeding (2016) are setting the bar for a new golden age of anarcho punk in the UK. This album deserves a place in your collection next to Icons Of Filth, Anti Sect, Vex, and Exit Stance. Includes 16-page lyric booklet with art by Nicky Rat and Jack Sabbat.

LAFAWNDAH The Fifth Season LP
2021 restock. "After a banner year that witnessed Lafawndah release her first album Ancestor Boy, the debut of her soundsystem Fara Fara, and further incursions into film, contemporary art and fashion, the ceaseless artist returns with another plot twist: The Fifth Season. Inspired by her encounter with author NK Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy, Lafawndah both pays homage to and extends further the elemental, emotionally charged myths of Jemisin's books. These are stories where a broken heart can tear apart a continent. In contrast to the precision-tuned industrial productions of Ancestor Boy, The Fifth Season breathes a different kind of volatility. Inviting a new degree of spontaneity and freedom into her process, Lafawndah's collaborators -- Theon Cross (tuba), Nathaniel Cross (trombone), Valentina Magaletti (percussions), and Nick Weiss (keyboards) -- encircle her confrontational character studies with iridescent, cinematic chamber-bass moves. These are torch songs for when it rains ash, creation ballads for when the earth turns inside out. Ghosts of Art Ensemble of Chicago and Rahsaan Roland Kirk color the air, yet Lafawndah's mastery of pop songcraft, vocal production and razor-honed clarity of purpose cut through. In addition to the Lafawndah originals, The Fifth Season features interpretations of hybrid-folk godfather Beverly Glenn Copeland's 'Don't Despair' and acid-impressionist prodigy Lili Boulanger's 'Old Buddhist Prayer.' Album highlight 'You, at the End' deploys a poem by poet-performer Kae Tempest to aching, rift-tearing ends, and French dream-trap wraith Lala &ce features on 'Le Malentendu'. The Fifth Season anchors Lafawndah as a descendent of forebearers Brigitte Fontaine and Scott Walker -- a born theatric whose acid humor warps the sub-continental undertow of her emotive storytelling. Lafawndah's elementalism on The Fifth Season finds her imagination more agile than ever, and recent live shows have evinced a drive to push these compositions further out, deeper, and more aflame."

You can recognize some of the anonymous outstanding instrumentalists as they appear on record after record and marvel at their uncanny blend of Western and Far East, a pure synergy Western musicians have never accomplished. Of course, looming over every recording is the tragic end of the music and the musicians themselves under the axe of the Khmer Rouge, a cloak of darkness hovering over some of the most joyous, festive music ever made. In a world of instant global communication and mass pop culture, Cambodian rock remains one of the few undiscovered secrets of music. Not content with killing the musicians, the government further ordered the destruction of their records, implicitly understanding the power of pop music to create community. It is a testament to the power of Sinn Sisamouth's music that it has survived all that has been done to vanquish it." --Joel Selvin, author/journalist. WOULD, BOBBY World Wide World LP
Bobby Would LP#2. Wistful waltz-time psycho-beat for warding off/wallowing in the 2020-21 Weltschmerz. Swelling and smearing the vision of 2018's skeletal rock n' roll heartbreaker Baby, most of the songs here are ballads -- minimalist, ultra-hypnotic but lavishly melodic space-punk lullabies and bright, bruised expressions of jingle-jangle mourning. Highs, lows and heavenly blows. BW's guitar is, more than ever, a thing of fearsome and filigree beauty, moving effortlessly from misty, mellifluous DIY pop-dreams to wailing vertiginous whiplash leads and dazed, epiphanic, angels-wept metha-drone, ringing in infinity -- and tethered to this earth only by his beloved monotone, numbed-out, serial-killer croon. Spinning in its own orbit, but with recognizable dabs -- perhaps -- of Phantom Payn/JG39, Les Rallizes Denudes, Gary War, Peter Gutteridge's Pure... and of course Bobby's own work in Heavy Metal and Itchy Bugger.

'A few months ago I completed work on an album with my friend Madlib that we'd been making for the last few years. He is always making loads of music in all sorts of styles and I was listening to some of his new beats and studio sessions when I had the idea that it would be great to hear some of these ideas made into a Madlib solo album. Not made into beats for vocalists to use but instead arranged into tracks that could all flow together in an album designed to be listened to start to finish. I put this concept to him when we were hanging out eating some nice food one day and we decided to work on this together with him sending me tracks, loops, ideas and experiments that I would arrange, edit, manipulate and combine. I was sent hundreds of pieces of music over a couple of years stretch and during that time I put together this album with all the parts that fitted with my vision.' --Kieren Hebden AKA Four Tet"

STOTT, ANDY Never The Right Time 2LP
Double LP version. It's been a decade since Andy Stott released Passed Me By (2011), a radical re-imagining of dance music as an expression of "physical and spiritual exhaustion" (Pitchfork). What followed was a process of rapid remodeling: We Stay Together (2011) -- slow and fucked, for the club, Luxury Problems (2012) -- greyscale romance, Faith In Strangers (2014) -- destroyed love songs, Too Many Voices (2016) -- 4th world Triton shimmers, and It Should Be Us (2019) -- the club, collapsed, a run of releases that gradually untangled complex ideas into a singular, chaotic body of work somewhere between sound-art, techno and pop. In early 2020 - with a new album almost done and an offer to produce for a completely mainstream artist on the table -- personal upheaval brought everything to a sudden standstill. Months of withdrawal eventually triggered renewed curiosity, a different approach. Stott began to record hours of raw material; slow horns, sibilance, delayed drums, wondering flutes -- whatever, whenever. And although software made it possible to iron out every kink and knot, Stott tirelessly looked for them -- in pursuit of a sound that was human in all its awkward asymmetry. With vocals recorded by Alison Skidmore, the album was finally completed late in the year -- taking on a completely different shape. Its songs were desolate, melancholy, defiant, beautiful -- often all at once. The sounds echoed music around Stott during those months: Prince, Gavin Bryars, A.R. Kane, Bohren & der Club of Gore, Robert Turman, Cindy Lee, Leila, Catherine Christer Hennix, Junior Boys, László Hortobágyi, Nídia, Prefab Sprout -- the unusual, the familiar. And echoing that mix of new and old, each of the songs on Never The Right Time seem woven from the same thread despite following different trajectories; from the lovelorn shimmer of opener "Away Not gone", to the clattering linndrum pop of "The Beginning", through "Answers" angular club haze, and the city-at-night end-credits "Hard To Tell". These are songs fueled by nostalgia and soul searching, but all hold true to a vision of music making as a form of renewal and reinvention. A ten-year cycle, complete. Mastered by Rashad Becker.

VON TILL, STEVE Harvestman - 23 Untitled Poems CD
"In 2020 Steve Von Till published his first book of poetry, Harvestman: 23 Untitled Poems And Collected Lyrics. Published by the University of South Dakota's Astrophil Press, the book established Von Till as a formidable and thoughtful author of verse -- a fact that Neurosis fans knew all along, but the wider world was only just becoming aware of. 'There is a depth of hope, acceptance and loss that permeates these poems,' Joseph Haeger said in his review for The Inlander. 'Like any great piece of art, Harvestman contains multitudes, and that's exactly what I was hoping for when I cracked it open. Von Till has already established himself as a great musician, and he's about to put his stake into the ground proving himself to be a damn good writer.' For 2021, Von Till has reimagined Harvestman in a new format, delivering an intimate and captivating reading of the collection with sound enhancements. 'Being a constant sound-seeker, I thought it would be more interesting to have some textures and treatments to break up the intimate voice recordings,' Von Till says of his decision to add some atmosphere to the spoken-word version of Harvestman. 'The background sounds used on some of the tracks were pieces related to No Wilderness Deep Enough that were either not used or repurposed to interweave further connections between my artistic output at this time of my life.'"

VON TILL, STEVE A Deep Voiceless Wilderness CD
"Steve Von Till has made a life's work out of seeking the elemental. With a solo discography that stretches back more than two decades, he has toiled in a shadow realm, peeling back layers of reality in a never-ending search for true meaning and raw emotion. A Deep Voiceless Wilderness strips back the veil even further. An achingly beautiful ambient work with neo-classical leanings, the album is a hallucinatory and elegant rumination on our disconnect from the natural world, each other, and ultimately ourselves. For some listeners, the album may recall the work of modern composers like Jóhann Jóhannsson, Brian Eno or Gavin Bryars. For Von Till, it's about surrendering to the spirit of place -- and to the original intent behind his 2020 solo album, No Wilderness Deep Enough. That album marked a significant first for Von Till: it was his first solo record without a guitar in hand. Instead, Von Till intoned powerful and thought-provoking lyrics over piano, cello, mellotron and analog synthesizers. A Deep Voiceless Wilderness is that same album without Von Till's words. 'This is how I originally heard this piece of music,' he says. 'Without the voice as an anchor or earthbound narrative, these pieces have a broader wingspan. They become something else entirely and unfold in a more expansive way. The depth of the synths, juxtaposed with the strings and French horn, have space to develop and allow the listener to imagine their own story.'"

GAZELLE TWIN & NYX Deep England CD
"Here lies our ancient future, Deep England: our hope and compassion in the chokehold of power and glory. Hand in hand, here we cry our rage: summoning a lament into the ether, a divine androgynous force, a transcendental purge of the dizzying chaos of post-truth Britain." --Gazelle Twin & NYX.Gazelle Twin & NYX, electronic drone choir, have announced details of their debut release, Deep England, an eight-track album via NYX Collective Records. Rooted in English pagan and sacred music, Deep England is an electronic-choral expansion of Gazelle Twin's 2018 album Pastoral (AGMR 035CD/AGMR 036LP). Here, tracks from Pastoral, an album whose political themes have only intensified since its original release, are radically reworked and presented alongside original compositions by NYX, Paul Giovanni, and William Blake. Gazelle Twin (aka Elizabeth Bernholz) and NYX, the electronic drone choir reshaping the role of the traditional female choir, originally created Deep England for live performance with movement director Imogen Knight, sound associate Peter Rice, and designer Chloe Lamford. The performance, described by The Times in their review as a "spellbinding febrile techno-pagan pageant," premiered at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in November 2019. Deep England was transferred to the studio soon after, and the resulting album shows a powerful and often dreamlike Jarman-esque depiction of a country divided by its many selves. The performers are Adélaïde Pratoussy, Cecilia Forssberg, Elizabeth Bernholz, Natalie Sharp, Ruth Corey, Shireen Qureshi, and Sian O'Gorman. The album was co-produced by Marta Salogni, Sian O'Gorman, and Elizabeth Bernholz with mix and additional programming by Marta Salogni, and mastering by Heba Kadry. ENDGAME Surrender LP
Surrender is the debut full length from DJ, producer, and songwriter Endgame. Stepping out for the first time as a vocalist, and lyricist, Surrender is his most ambitious and vulnerable work to date; a striking statement of intent, with moments of beauty and brutality. Endgame has carved an iconoclastic niche in club culture. Breaking into the scene as co-founder of the legendary collective Bala Club, and resident of the radical club-night Endless. Whilst continuing almost a decade hosting his infamous NTS radio show (and now label) Precious Metals, he has forged a path against the tide of formulaic club music. A visionary DJ and producer, Surrender sees Endgame continue this trajectory, with a project that both amplifies the ferocious club constructions he's known for, whilst making space to open up wounded memories and with somber unfeigned requiems. Surrender is a deeply personal record, about loss and finding meaning in despair. Death is a prevailing theme, with the passing of his father a totemic subject. The recollection of his father's torturous final moments leaves him to mournfully contemplate temporality. Using this sense of anguish, he blurs reality -- creating a world where angels and demons are among us in a decaying cityscape; akin to the work of Todd McFarlane. The opener "Faithless", propels you into this world, with the slow build of industrial precision amidst the somber build of harsh melodic synths. You descend deeper into this vision with "Barbed Heart", featuring a defining vocal from Yayoyanoh, as 808s and skittering hi-hats ricochet off one another beneath his bass driven vocal. "No Heroes" continues the journey into the unknown with a chaotic rush of acidic riffs, pounding percussion, and a reference to the brutalist anthem from hardcore punk band Converge. "Requiem" acts as the turning point of the record as Endgame steps into the foreground as a vocalist. As the name suggests, this lament is a somber reflection of grief; its minimalist instrumental allows Endgame's haunted verse to rise into the foreground, like an apparition amidst the smoke in the depths of a dimly lit club. The dark clouds fade into the distance in "Exhumed", as the elegant melancholic vocal of Bala Club affiliate and gifted vocalist Organ Tapes reflects off Endgame's sanguine verses bringing hope into the heartfelt instrumental filled with melodic flourishes and bass-bin rattling subs. The thematic haze thickens in "Abyss", as the pulsating and doom-laden instrumental interweaves with Endgame's sepulchral vocal. Blood red vinyl.

HEDVIG MOLLESTAD TRIO Ding Dong. You're Dead. LP
LP version. Only nine months after Hedvig Mollestad momentous debut solo album Ekhidna (RCD 2215CD/RLP 3215LP), the guitarist is back fronting her trio. With their previous album, Smells Funny (RCD 2203CD/RLP 3203LP, 2019), this explosive and expansive trio experienced a breakthrough of sorts, having gone from strength to strength through five albums since their 2011 debut Shoot! (RCD 2115CD/RLP 3115LP, 2011), gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps, sharing big stages with the likes of John McLaughlin and Black Sabbath, and being equally comfortable on jazz and rock stages. Hedvig enforced this breakthrough with Ekhidna, appearing on both jazz and rock best of 2020 lists, like coming in third in Prog's "Album of the Year" poll. With the hypnotic title track, the spacious ballad "Four Candles" and generally a more varied mood, Ding Dong. You're Dead. is the trio's most dynamic album to date. That said there's still enough solid and creative riffing here to satisfy the headbangers, as well as the jazzheads, as they further explore the free and open landscapes most notably started with their Black Stabat Mater album (RCD 2183CD/RLP 3183LP, 2016) and continued with Smells Funny. As Nate Chinen wrote about Black Stabat Mater in JazzTimes: "Her trio, which has Ellen Brekken on bass and Ivar Loe Bjørnstad on drums, caught my ear then with its audacious style references: the loose swagger of early Black Sabbath; the density and prowl of peak Led Zeppelin; the expeditionary urge of Jimi Hendrix; the incantatory fervor of John McLaughlin." This trio radiates confidence and have become a surefire hit on the Norwegian live scene. And while we rightly praise Hedvig's exceptional abilities, let's not forget how important the rhythm section is to make it all work so well. Ellen Brekken is an accomplished bassist, driving the band just as hard on the electric bass as on the acoustic. Then there's Ivar Loe Bjørnstad, not your regular rock drummer, not your regular jazz drummer, but in possession of the loose swagger mentioned above.

SPIKE IN VAIN Disease Is Relative LP
"The cover art by the band's Chris Marec tells nearly everything one needs to know about this album: a misshapen, CHUD-like figure wanders in a graveyard bearing a cross, while a mutated fish flops in a polluted ditch and a clutch of factories belch their smoke above it all. The message of the illustration is not to frighten or warn, but to celebrate and admire. Originally released in January of 1984, Disease Is Relative is an unapologetic and wholesale embrace of death, disease, and dystopia, with liberal doses of absurdism and an unrelenting devotion to anything unexpected, chromatic, or evil sounding. Sporting influences as diverse as no wave, death rock, funk, post-punk, hardcore, metal, and prog rock, this music somehow happened in the midst of a first wave hardcore scene, before there was a 'post-' to be 'post' of. Less surprising is that this happened in Cleveland, which also inspired a desire to recreate the feeling of the city's post-industrial desolation in sound. There's also some epic screaming and crazy guitar playing. The album features three songwriters (brothers Andrew & Chris Marec, Robert Griffin), who also divide guitar, bass, and vocals equally between themselves here. Drummer Bruce Allen is the secret weapon, and provides a clue to what a young Bill Bruford might have done in a band like this. And yet, beyond all odds, the end result is cohesive, cathartic, and utterly idiomatic. The distinct vibe of the album, and its sheer quantity of killer riffs, songs and performances have made it an album that people have championed over time, while others have come to know it through the interwebs as a result."

SPIKE IN VAIN Death Drives A Cadillac LP
"Death Drives A Cadillac was Spike In Vain's second album, never officially released and unheard in its final form until now. Like many hardcore bands circa '84 and '85, the group was ready to further expand its palette and ease off the thrash tempos. Recorded roughly a year after Disease Is Relative with a bigger budget, the album is even more wide-ranging, and the songs are more fleshed out. 'Despair grew inside her, I grew inside her. She named me Spirit Death, and this is my song' sings Chris Marec, the vocalist on half of this LP. Though less 'young' than their debut, that album's darkness lingers, but here has a more removed, observational quality, with many songs sung in character or in the third person, along with a tendency for anthropomorphic allegory. It has a bit less to do with screaming for death to come than with a growing resignation to being the other, a recognition of inescapable alienation and its relation to childhood trauma -- all with a heaping side of absurdity and a sense of wonder at the gradually unfolding end times. That said, many of the tracks wouldn't be out of place on the debut, and some feature exotic tunings. Bits of roots music come into play as well -- gospel, blues, and country figure to some extent in a third of the songs, sometimes in convoluted, Beefheart-esque ways, and at other times toying with genre archetypes as a cat does a mouse."

SAGAN Anti-Ark CD
"Sagan is Blevin Blectum (Blectum From Blechdom), Jay Lesser (live touring member of Matmos) and Wobbly (collaborator with Negativland, Thurston Moore Group, Dieter Moebius & Tim Story, Fred Frith, Huun-Huur-Tu, etc) -- three solo artists from the San Francisco Bay Area's legendarily weird electronic music scene, coming together in shared love of Space. Fifteen years in the making, their second album Anti-Ark arrives -- a recursive love letter to the early decades of space travel and the High Frontier, when the lines between hard scientific research and emotional wanderlust melted away to reveal an optimistic vision for mankind's shared future. Explosively kinetic, searingly romantic, the album draws on the trio's formative influences: the electronic space music which Carl Sagan's 1980 TV program Cosmos brought to a global audience. Sagan channels the Cosmos sound universe into new compositions, performed live and then folded in on themselves through countless edits into a molecular quilt. The album's micro-bursts of ambient, meditative and kosmiche are woven into new and denser signals -- flying by as if picked up by some satellite hurtling through every civilized universe, moving faster than known physics allows. Any given ten second stretch of Anti-Ark contains a greater density of sound design than might be typically deployed over the course of entire tracks -- an attempted inventory not of the objects within the ecosystem, but of the relationships between them. Set against today's closing windows of opportunity, each sound here contains its own melody and serves as a note within a larger one, a stream of that information which needs to be sung before it can be known."

It is the seventh major book release by Johan Kugelberg, the author and editor behind The Velvet Underground: New York Art, Born in the Bronx and Punk: An Aesthetic (Rizzoli), True Norwegian Black Metal (Vice), Brad Pitt's Dog (Zero Books), and Beauty Is in the Street: A Visual Record of the May '68 Paris Uprising (Four Corners). The subjects of Enjoy the Experience range from lesbian folk singers to psychedelic disco bands; awkward teen pop combos to pizza parlor organists; religious cult leaders to swank Sinatra imitators. But this is not a novelty freak show: also profiled and discussed are some of the most highly regarded rock, soul, jazz, funk and singer/songwriter albums from the latter half of the twentieth century. ROSALI No Medium LP
LP version. "While the collection of songs on Philadelphia / Michigan musician Rosali's electrifying third album, No Medium, explores the often dark territory of loss, death, sexuality, self-sabotage, and addiction, there is a surprising lightness to its sonic being. Backed by members of the David Nance Group, Rosali (Long Hots, Wandering Shade, Monocot) wades through the emotional mire with infectious, earworm melodies led by her luminous voice. With their rich, raw instrumentation, these rock ballads sound like the resilience discovered in facing one's darkest moments, the assurance of the calm and clarity that comes after the storm. As she sings on the second track, 'Bones,' 'Through the darkness of the field / I walk through without yielding / To the rest of the feelings / I'm carrying.' With her confident song craft, Rosali illustrates the ability to push through, moving toward something greater without being destroyed by the weight of trauma. The influences for the sound of No Medium reflect this pairing of assured vulnerability, in the stylistic coherence of Bob Dylan's Desire, the tender delivery in Iain Matthews' Journey From Gospel Oak, the strut and swagger of Bowie's Hunky Dory, the ambition and beauty of Gene Clark's No Other, and the playful catharsis of Harry Nilsson's Nilsson Schmilsson. Engineered by James Shroeder and featuring Shroeder (Simon Joyner, DNG, Connor Oberst), Kevin Donahue (Simon Joyner), David Nance, Noah Sterba, Colin Duckworth, and Daniel Knapp, the album was recorded in ten days and the raw immediacy of the music is palpable across these ten tracks. Added adornment was contributed by Philadelphia's Robbie Bennett (War on Drugs) on organ and keys, and Matt Barrick (The Walkmen, Jonathan Fire Eater, Muzz) makes a percussion cameo on 'Whisper,' which was tracked at Philly's Silent Partner Studio, where No Medium was mixed by Quentin Stoltzfus (Mazarin, Light Heat). The open creative collaboration elevated the songs, resulting in the exciting, vibrant sound of the album."

OILY BOYS Cro Memory Grin LP
Clear vinyl repress. When Sydney's Oily Boys dropped their long-awaited debut LP on Cool Death over the summer of 2020 and Static Shock Records quickly fell in love with it. Static Shock now releasing this across the pond for the uninitiated. Here's what the Cool Death originally said about this record, as we couldn't agree more: "Chthonic, catatonic, chronic... Cro Memory Grin is a masterpiece. Thirteen turbocharged tracks indebted to the pleasures and pitfalls of their lives in the modern city of Sydney and to the first and second waves of international extreme music freaks and loonies: pure fucking aggression. The Oily Boys have graced us with a beast of an album that swells between direct, gripping, tangible hardcore punk and near nauseating psychedelia and throb which at moments feels like either ritual trance or a nervous breakdown. Cro Memory Grin contains near equal measures of tension and release; an exercise in high catharsis. It's rare that a punk record can give the listener anywhere near the same intoxicating feel of an 'everything louder than everything else' live show, but that's what Oily Boys have done. That lightning in a bottle feeling of excitement, chaotic energy, delirium, presence in a moment and frenzied flight into a mind state both frightening and ecstatic. The stone has been carved, the fire has been lit, and this is it... Cro. Memory. Grin." Blue marbled vinyl and comes packaged in a slightly different sleeve to the Cool Death pressing. Features members of Low Life.

HINCHLIFFE, DICKON Leave No Trace LP
"The soundtrack to the incredible film Leave No Trace was composed and performed by Dickon Hinchliffe of the Tindersticks. Hinchliffe creates a dark, droney landscape of string arrangements and Spacemen 3-esue guitar reverberations. With this soundtrack Hinchliffe sits amongst the great composers of our day such as William Basinski, Ennio Morricone and Jóhann Jóhannsson. Pressed on forest green vinyl."

BLACK BONES Night Drives 12"
The Black Bones story is born out of a shared obsession for crate-digging, collecting, and the playing of weird and wonderful music. Their releases so far have manifested in a highly-sought series of seven psychedelic disco 12"s -- picking up numerous "Record of the Week" plaudits on the way. This considered curation and skill for pulling together far-flung sounds fully informs their first original material. These four bold and adventurous club cuts are a thrilling mix of straight-up house sounds, new beat, industrial, dub, sleaze and all the other good shit that comes with low-lighting and a heavy sound system. Kicking off with the full throttle 120 bpm of "ABTS" -- the duo take you straight to the 'floor with one of the wildest rides in some time. "Denied" pulls you into darker territory -- chest-pummeling bass, ominous high-pitched warnings, and a chuggy acid throwdown finds you once again lost in that 5am dancefloor fog. Over on the flip and "Punghi" combines a hypnotic groove, dubbed-out FX, percussion, and a tripped-out Eastern breakdown. One for the more adventurous DJs and dancefloor. The EP is closed by "Gabi" which sounds like minimal gone maximal with an insane industrial switch-up. Enough words! As always, Black Bones let the music do the talking and this ambitious debut can quickly find itself shelved alongside the records that have fueled their lifelong obsession.

CHERRYSTONES Cherrystones Presents Critical Mass Vol. 2 Hearts Of Champions CD
"I like the drive as much as the scenery." Buckle up as producer, DJ, and archivist Cherrystones (Gareth Goddard) takes you on a return trip to Critical Mass. He has a life-long obsession with the soundtrack and was also gripped early by a love of rap (a trusted MPC 2000 never far from his side). The channeling of context, underscore, timing and placement has always fueled the distinctive flavor of Cherrystones' output. This open-eared and open-armed approach is what makes Critical Mass Vol. 2 another stunning compilation. As Goddard states: "this is not a rare-for-rare-sake appendix of bands designed to showcase exclusivity and superiority." These are tracks that have lived with him, and he has lived within, gathered over travels throughout Europe -- living, DJing, and creating. Five years on from the first volume, this eighteen-track compilation once again fully outlines the breadth and possibility of the post-punk and new wave era. "Many of these artists fell by the wayside as underdogs or were just too ahead of their time. These selections have strong rhythmic undertones -- percussively and tonally -- and you can hear the subtle influence of dance music and the dance floor as a reference point." On our journey we hear hyped up punk-funk from the Netherlands in the form of Kone?, the cosmic synth-stomp of Daniele Baldelli approved Italians -- Neon, the gonzo, outsider shrieks of England's Loco Lotus, through to the dark, dancefloor groove of Belgium's Siglo XX and, of course, there's a whole heap more outré excursions on the way. Also features The Danse Society, A Primary Industry, Paul Lemos, Die Form, The Neon Judgement, New Asia, The Mud Hutters, Martin Rössel & The Dum Dum Boys, Flue, Unknown Gender, Vitor Hublot, Concise, JP 118, and November Group. "From one of the last true originals -- a personal, passionate draft of a 'scene' that could have been. As far as possible from diggers' wet dreams -- most of the music here is/was hidden in plain sight. So take one step back and figure out what might have gone wrong." --Vladimir Ivkovic

SOULS OF MISCHIEF 93 'Til Infinity 2LP
2021 repress. "There are very few albums across any genre that stand the test of time better than 93 'Til Infinity, the classic debut record from the Hieroglyphics crew's very own Souls of Mischief. In an era where gangsta rap and G-Funk dominated the West Coast rap scene, Souls broke ground on a completely unique and thoroughly west coast sound. While the Dr. Dre's and the Snoop Doggs were garnering much of the mainstream attention, Souls were quietly forging a charismatic, critically acclaimed, and cohesively shaped record that when categorized, sounded much closer to A Tribe Called Quest than N.W.A. The sound of their debut is characteristic of the distinct style explored by the collective, including a rhyme scheme based on internal rhyme and beats centered around a live bass and obscure jazz and funk samples."

K-LONE Capa Cira LP
Cape Cira is the lush, hypnotic debut album by acclaimed British producer K-LONE. In contrast to his clubbier productions, Cape Cira sees the producer explore the full melodic and textural potentials of his sound, drawing influence from ambient, fourth world, and modern classical music to create a work more closely related to the outputs of SND, Jon Hassell, Burnt Friedman, or -- more recently -- Don't DJ and Visible Cloaks. The result of a short creative burst during a grim British winter, the record explores music as escapism, comprising a series of lush, warm vignettes that demonstrate music's unique transportive power. Cape Cira takes place in a sensuous sonic world between the natural and digital realms: FM synthesizers mimic acoustic instruments, tuned percussion, and bird song; and found sounds and field recordings are processed with a hyperreal sheen. The gift for composition only hinted at in K-LONE's work to date is on full display here. The artful and intuitive simplicity of the record's melodies belies the complexity of their composition, where looping polyrhythms create shifting, unresolved patterns and ever-changing counterpoints. Cape Cira marks the first full length release on Wisdom Teeth -- the label K-LONE runs with friend and collaborator, Facta. The album stands as an exciting next step for both the producer and the label itself, furthering their reputation as key young voices in contemporary electronic music.
