Without any further delay the Coil Song of the week is returning this monday. This will be a feature that will go on even if we run out of songs. We may start repeating songs for those who missed some of the songs first time around...

PLAID - NOT FOR THREESAgain, what we have here is another release from the Warp label. Originally issued by Warp in 1997, it was reissued in the US by Nothing last year. With Not for Threes, Plaid shows that they don't belong to the freshman class of English IDM music. Songs like Prague Radio and Myopia are straight-up IDM tracks complete with spastic rhythms and discernible samples that help the tracks as they build. Lilith and Rakimou--the former featuring vocals by Bjork--haunt you as you are surrounded by swirling melodies and vocals that seem to undulate from another galaxy. While these tracks are all excellent, the standout on the album for me is Myopia--a track complete with synthesized steel drums and a bassline that seems to have been stolen from a Disney movie. The song builds into a jam that sounds like a Warp band's take on "Under the Sea" from The Little Mermaid. With all of these stuck up Brits churning out great techno, it's exciting to see a band with a little bit of humour who can just go out and have a good time. - Carter Adams
MARK HOLLIS
After hearing recommendations from many sources, I finally decided to pick up this album, the first release from former Talk Talk front man, Mark Hollis. This disc is the appropriate step in the natural progression from Talk Talk's final album, Lauging Stock, released in 1991. The melodies are subtle, delicate, and the instrumentation is intricate yet not overbearing. This is a wonderful disc and definately would have made my list of best albums of 1998 had I acquired it in 1998. This album is the perfect length, 8 tracks, 45 minutes approximately. Enough to enjoy, but not overkill. - Jon Whitney

COMMENT
This weekend, a new movie starring John Travolta hits the theatres. The movie is based on a true story about what went on in a town I actually used to work in, Woburn MA. The story is of a company who was dumping chemicals and how it is believed to have effected the drinking water and caused deaths and illnesses in children. This is what they don't tell you: while the case was settled out of court, the lawyers still made lots of money on this 'deal' that was made, the victims did not. The book was written by one of the lawyers - I'm sure he made a good amount of money off of the sales and royalties, the victims still did not. The movie rights were bought from the book author, and once again the lawyers made out with more money, the victims still did not. At the movie premiere, the lawyers were all smiling and basking in the spotlight next to John Travolta, but there was no sign of the victims, the root of this story. Thus, the public gets this wonderfully tragic story and feels bad for the victims, yet buys into all the money-driven greed of the lawyers. Just something to think about every time you see the ads. - Jon Whitney

Is it true that Aphex will put out an album on the 23 of February?

According to ICE Magazine, Sire Records will be putting out an as yet untitled Aphex album on Feb 23rd. However, this could just be referring to a US release of Window Licker. Whatever the case, all the info I have is what's on the website. - Greg

what about "Aube"? great? packaging, but any good musics?
Good is in the eye of the beholder. I personally find Aube's music amusing but it's nothing I go to great lengths to purchase. What he does for each album is use only 1 instrument in many different mutations. I only have "Cardiac Strain" which is all songs created from a heartbeat. It's quite interesting what he chooses to do with his 1 source, but not something I listen to constantly.
