WATER DAMAGE In E 2LP
"Volume, repetition, volume, repetition, volume and repetition, this is the sonic mantra of Austin, Texas's Water Damage. On their new double album, Water Damage continues to scorch the earth with walls of punishing sound. It's no secret that something truly special can happen to the psyche when you are being pummeled with trance inducing drones, you can transcend time, you might laugh, you might cry but hopefully you look inward, letting a calm wash over you with metric tons of distortion. Water Damage are the rare 'rock' band that follow in the lineage of artists like Faust, Tony Conrad, Steve Reich, and P?rson Sound, one that creates such heavy yet minimalistic audio treasures that not only hit you viscerally but also give space to contemplate on your place in the cosmos. Their longest offering yet, Water Damage hits you with four side-long tracks of krautpunk ending with a cover of 'Ladybird' by Shit & Shine featuring Craig Clouse on vocals. Drone until you hear god speak." --Joe Trainer, Dummy

An astonishing overview of the magnificent musical talents populating Bollywood films. A sample of those incredible talents is included in this compilation, the ideal point to start digging deeper into the lush garden of musical delights that is Bollywood. CELIBATE RIFLES, THE Spaceman In A Satin Suit LP
Spaceman In a Satin Suit was released in 1994 and it is one of the best and most mature works in Celibate Rifles? discography, and now for the first time on vinyl since its initial release. The 14 songs of the Celibate Rifles introduce you to an electric storm, oppressively dense, hard and heavy, which then become faster, sharper and stronger, where they overflow punk, which remains their hallmark, with sharp guitars, wounded and full of fury, until they reach a kind of breaking point towards a more experimental part, together generating an interesting sonic boom (The Ramones team up with Blue Oyster Cult in a particularly gloomy alley). Lovelock's lyrics exude more optimism than on previous LPs and this peaks with "Big World," a declaration of love to his beloved planet Earth. There is also room for his usual biting social commentary. On the album there is also a tribute to one of its musical influences, "Let's Do It Again" by Sonic's Rendezvous Band (with the participation of Fred 'Sonic' Smith, ex-MC5). This great LP reflects the simple spirit of the Rifles' rock and roll with catchy choruses and signature guitars, with another part that they began to play with after this album, a more experimental and introspective side.

KILL DEVIL HILLS, THE Matango! LP
The sixth studio album, Matango!, by Western Australian band The Kill Devil Hills is out on Bang! Records. The new album has ten songs, that -- according to the band's own words -- reference "global unrest and displacement, near future scenarios, climate catastrophe, pandemic vortices, the Simpsons, the grace of women, refugees and boat people, Cold War paranoia, the creative process itself, and of course Australia and its peculiar place in things." Matango! had a few different birthplaces over the 2018-19 period: an old house in the hills of Perth, back porches in Fremantle, a Prague apartment, a French country villa in the swelter of summer, and a lonely pandemic piano. A strange and sinewy beast of an album, it's something of a departure from earlier KDH work: minimal, leering with glitching drums samples, synth swells, empty spaces, and a soup of fat bass tones to float it all in. Recording started about two weeks before lockdowns did in Australia, and so everything went into that unique mode of hibernation for a while, but the album beds were largely done, and work eventually recommenced, discovering what was there, reshaping and re-recording some tracks, and throwing in an experimental opening salvo which is largely free of regular instruments, more a montage of samples and textures, written on a piano and then deconstructed into a spectral hiss and wail. The album title obliquely refers to the 1963 Japanese psychological horror film of the same name (directed by Godzilla/kaiju maestro Ishiro Honda).

NOMADS, THE Solna (Loaded Deluxe Edition) LP
Expanded reissue, originally released in 2012. The formula is simple: a strong frontman, Nick Vahlberg, a guitar hero, Hans Ostlund, a powerful drummer, Joakim Werning, and a multi-talented bassist and composer, Bjorne Froberg. The Nomads are an institution in Europe after more than 40 years of career. Their last album, Solna was named after the Stockholm neighborhood from which they emerged in 1981, paving the way for the garage rock scene of the time. "Aside from the Pebbles compilations, not much was known about the garage bands of the '60s and many people first heard those great songs in The Nomads version," according to Chips K (famous Swedish producer -- Hellacopters, la Secta -- and member of Sator). "But one thing that distinguishes the band from many other revival bands is that they never just copied the sound of the originals. They added extra influences such as punk, power pop and hard rock. That special recipe is what still makes their sound unique." Bands like The Hellacopters, Maharajas, and Sator are direct descendants of what The Nomads created. They were closer to Australian punk rock and took varied influences to create something completely their own. If they decided to cover something, it seemed like it was their own song. Another aspect that makes them stand out from many of their contemporaries is their chemistry. Live they are like an engine, and in a perfect world, they should have had hit after hit. Anyone who doubts this statement should pick up a copy of the Nomadic Dementia compilation, and it will be clear that we are not just talking about it. The band even accompanied Roky Erickson on a single festival date and the former 13th Floor Elevators' ex-wife paid Hans a huge compliment. "Right after the show, she told me, 'You're the best guitarist Roky has had since Duane (Aslaksen)." The Nomads deliver hair-raising authenticity of rock and roll with unsurpassed purity. Nobody coughs on them or will cough on them. They are still as good as ever. In fact, they are probably even better now. After many years of career, The Nomads produced their strongest album to date. The group perfected their sound, live and in the studio. Solna is the distilled essence of what The Nomads are known for. Edition of 500.

GUERRERO, TOMMY Loose Grooves & Bastard Blues LP
Loose Grooves & Bastard Blues is Tommy Guerrero's sublime debut. Of this beloved masterpiece, the legendary skater himself says: "My first album. It was never meant to be released. I was just recording for the fun of it. Still my fave. Oh so na?ve." It's definitely Be With's favorite too. An astonishingly great record. A chill, blissful, deeply moving album, it was rightly garlanded as an instant classic. A laidback, fusionistic ride replete with loopy drum tracks underpinning Tommy's trademark reflective guitar stylings, Loose Grooves & Bastard Blues remains powerfully evergreen. Originally released in 1997, there's elements of jazz, trip hop, rock and downtempo groove. All shot through with a heavy dose of soul. Thirteen tracks of lo-fi (mostly) instrumental freshness fused with Cuban, Latin and blues, it's a must for fans of Money Mark, J Dilla, RJD2, DJ Shadow, and Pete Rock. As ever with Tommy's records, the title sums up the music contained within most aptly. And writing about his songs, his vibes, is one of the trickier things to do, it has to be said. A total vibe throughout, to blast Loose Grooves & Bastard Blues is a majestic experience, one that suits a start-to-finish listen and renders the picking out of highlights totally redundant. Featuring nagging, deeply melodic guitar lines -- both electric and acoustic -- over simple rhythms with such sumptuous elegance, the hypnotic playing against unrushed percussion releases a crystal clear stream of healing frequencies. This album laid the blueprint from which Tommy Guerrero would subsequently explore further on A Little Bit of Somethin' (BEWITH 024LP) and Soul Food Taquiera. Meticulously remastered and cut by both Simon Francis and Cicely Balston respectively, it has been pressed to the highest possible quality at Record Industry in Holland. The original and iconic sleeve, designed by Natas Kaupas, has been restored here at Be With HQ as the finishing touch to this long overdue re-issue. Part of Be With's Tommy Guerrero reissue campaign. 140g vinyl.

GUERRERO, TOMMY Return Of The Bastard LP
Tommy Guerrero's revered Return Of The Bastard gets its first ever vinyl reissue. Endearingly simple but beautifully beguiling, it's lo-fi dusty break business with the most elegant guitars this side of Vini Reilly and Gabor Szabo. Tommy's breezy drum-machine guitar-soul should be prescribed to soothe an aching world. By rights, he should also be a Balearic god. Here's 14 tracks of drop-dead laconic beauty, all of them combining to create this unheralded masterpiece. Working with Tommy directly, the LP has been fully remastered and sounds as dazzlingly, heartbreakingly beautiful as it did back in 2007. As ever, there's heavenly Latin guitar stylings that make you swoon and the melancholic vibe is accentuated by the addition of some melodic wordless vocals from Tommy. The head-nod funk of "Calling For Ya!" features Curumin delivering the clever title as a hypnotic vocal refrain peppered throughout, all hung around some buried spoken word vocals and gorgeous cello work from Lenny Gonzalez. "Bloodinthemud" is a low-down gritty funk workout whilst "Zapata's Boots" is a total low-key groover, all Latin percussion and Morricone muscle aided by a whistled Spaghetti Western melody. The upbeat and bright "40 Summers," featuring congas from Alfredo Ortiz, is as clean and poppy as Tommy gets and it really is a look he wears incredibly well. DAGAR BROTHERS Berlin 1964: The Lost Studio Recording LP
Following on from 2023's acclaimed Vrindavan 1982 by rudra veena master Z.M. Dagar, Black Truffle presents a pair of archival releases from the Dagar Brothers, among the most revered 20th century exponents of the ancient North Indian dhrupad tradition. The vocal duo of Moinuddin and Aminuddin Dagar (sometimes referred to as the "senior" Dagar Brothers to distinguish them from their younger siblings, Zahiruddin and Faiyazuddin Dagar), belonged to the nineteenth generation of a family of musicians in which dhrupad tradition has been kept alive through patrilinear transmission, each generation undergoing a rigorous education of many years' duration that can include singing up to twelve hours each day. Famed for the meditative purity of their approach to dhrupad, the Dagar Brothers helped to keep the tradition alive in the years after Indian independence in 1947. Many Western listeners were first introduced to dhrupad by the Dagar Brothers' tour of Europe in 1964-65 and their LP in UNESCO's Musical Anthology of the Orient collection, both organized by pioneering musicologist and scholar of Indian culture Alain Dani?lou. Documents from this tour are especially precious, as Moinuddin Dagar passed away in 1966. Berlin 1964: The Lost Studio Recording presents two unheard side-long performances in crystalline fidelity, recorded at the International Institute for Comparative Studies and Documentation in Berlin headed by Alain Dani?lou. These stunning recordings were consigned to the archive because, as Peter Pannke explains in his liner notes, which recount his meeting with Danielou many years after these recordings were made, the tape ran out during "Raga Jaijaivanti," which terminates abruptly soon after the entry of the pakhawaj. Accompanied only by Moinuddin's wife Saiyur on tanpura and Raja Chatrapati Singh on pakhawaj, the brothers present stunning performances of the severe, serious midnight "Raga Malkauns," set to a ten beat cycle once the pakhawaj enters, and the complex early evening "Raga Jaijaivanti," set to a fourteen beat cycle in its rhythmic section. Illustrated with a striking full-color concert photograph, Berlin 1964: The Lost Studio Recording is accompanied by extensive liner notes by Peter Pannke celebrating musicologist Alain Dani?lou, whose study, documentation and promotion of dhrupad was so important for spreading awareness of this great musical tradition, ready to be discovered anew in this stunning recording from two of its master exponents.

TEITELBAUM, RICHARD Asparagus 2LP
Black Truffle announces a major archival release from legendary American composer and live electronics innovator Richard Teitelbaum, centered around his soundtrack for Suzan Pitt's cult 1978 animation Asparagus. Best known to some listeners for introducing Europe to the Moog synthesizer as a founding member of Musica Elettronica Viva in Rome, Teitelbaum's extensive and radically experimental body of work includes collaborative recordings with master improvisers like Anthony Braxton, Andrew Cyrille, and George Lewis, intercultural experiments combining electronics with non-Western instruments such as the shakuhachi, works for computer controlled piano, and large-scale multi-media operas. Recorded at York University, Toronto in 1975-1976, "Asparagus (European Version)" sprawls across both sides of the first LP. Discovered by composer Matt Sargent in Teitelbaum's tape archive, this is a previously unheard major work for Moog modular and Polymoog synthesizers, unique in Teitelbaum's oeuvre for its lushness and gently melodic quality. Teitelbaum incorporated much of this material into his soundtrack for Suzan Pitt's Asparagus, which receives its first official release here. Asparagus, famously paired with David Lynch's Eraserhead for a two-year run of midnight screenings at New York's Waverly Theatre, uses hand-drawn and stop animation to unfurl an oneiric succession of images, beginning with a sequence in which the female protagonist defecates two stalks of asparagus, which multiply and float out of the toilet bowl to form the letters of the title. Teitelbaum's soundtrack interweaves delicate drifting tones from the "European Version" with contributions from Steve Lacy and Steve Potts on saxophones, George Lewis on trombone and Takehisa Kosugi on violin. The final side of the set presents a new realization of Teitelbaum's text score "Threshold Music," performed at a memorial concert at Roulette, New York in 2022 by Leila Bourreuil (cello), Alvin Curran (sampler and objects), Daniel Fishkin (daxophone), Miguel Frasconi (glass objects), and Matt Sargent (lap steel). Here the players use a field recording taken at Teitelbaum's home in Bearsville, New York, their long tones and shimmering, glassy textures delicately emerging from the white noise of the location recording. Released with the full approval of both Richard Teitelbaum and Suzan Pitt's estates, Asparagus is illustrated with striking images from Pitt's film and accompanied by detailed liner notes by Francis Plagne. These previously unheard pieces shed new light on the work of a key composer in the American experimental tradition, offering up some of Teitelbaum's most beautiful and engaging music.

VATH, SVEN L'Esperanza 12"
L'Esperanza (Hope) is undoubtedly one of Sven V?th's greatest hits. After more than 30 years, Cocoon Recordings are very proud to revive this timeless masterpiece for you. The artwork is from the original 12" cover, which was released on Eye Q Records back then. Anyone who knows Sven recognizes that he has always felt free and evolved in terms of appearance and style. That's why Cocoon instantly loved the idea of Sven re-staging himself in the same pose but in a new guise. This picture disc documents a 30-year-long transformation, both sonically and visually. It is a beautiful journey through time and a true collector's item. Produced in 1993, "L'Esperanza" has certainly not lost any of its charm over the years. Lovely string sounds envelop you in a cloud of comfort, while the filtered downbeat emphasizes this feeling of lightness. The catchy tune of the playful synthesizer melody invites you to close your eyes and start dreaming. Let yourself fall into a deep state of meditation and trance. The airy electric bassline comes with a charismatic power and opens a door to the subconscious, calling on you to dive deep. The atmosphere of this composition sits somewhere between drifting through the sea and hovering through space. "L'Esperanza (Hardspace Mix)," a revised version of the "Hope Will Move Mountains" Mix by Visions Of Shiva, occurs on the B-Side in the form of Len Faki's hardspace mix. Len is renowned for his elegant edits and refined modifications as part of his side project, this time delivering a strippeddown 135 BPM version that fits perfectly into the current zeitgeist. A club version of "L'Esperanza" that radiates a high level of euphoric energy, constantly pushing the rhythm patterns forward. All hands go up in the air at the latest when the piano part starts in the middle section.

PARTCH, HARRY The World Of Harry Partch LP
2024 restock; recent 9.0 rating from Pitchfork; 180 gram exact repro reissue, originally released in 1969. "The World of Harry Partch collects three of his best short pieces. 'Daphne of the Dunes' (1967) is a side-long update of 'Windsong' written for dance. The melodic segments are given more emphasis than usual for a Partch piece, and harmonically this is one of his best with arpeggiated glides/cries of the Harmonic Canons evoking our sympathies. Meter changes almost measure by measure, with one section in 31/16 meter; another (polymetric) section consists of 4/4-7/4 over 4/8-7/8! Needless to say, while being very physical, Partch's music isn't something you can easily tap your foot to. What's most important is that it works. Partch was not one to introduce musical complexity merely for its own sake, another factor that separated him from his contemporaries. Not only are the rhythms complex, but they are performed at a frantic pace unequaled by any music I've hard (save perhaps the inhumanly fast player piano pieces of Conlon Nancarrow!). This is characteristic of most of Partch's works, though I think 'Daphne' is one of the most successful and exhilarating. 'Barstow -- Eight Hitchhiker Inscriptions from a Highway Railing at Barstow, California' was composed in 1941 as part of 'The Wayward.' It offers such statements as 'Go to 538 East Lemon Avenue for an easy handout' and 'Looking for millionaire wife...' This charismatic piece is successful due to the contrasting of Partch's intoning voice with others in the ensemble and to increased instrumental emphasis. Last is 'Castor and Pollux' in a more modern performance than From the Music of Harry Partch, with greater vigor and fidelity. The World of Harry Partch is an excellent introduction to his works that comes highly recommended." -- Surface Noise

MINGUS, CHARLES Shadows (Clear Vinyl) LP
John Cassavetes' directorial debut Shadows was a largely improvised film set in the bohemian jazz scene of 1950s New York; often referred to as the first truly independent film of American cinema, it featured a brief disjointed soundtrack improvised by Charles Mingus and his saxophonist Shafi Hadi, with various percussionists slotting in, including Phineas Newborn Jr. Gloriously messy, reportedly unfinished and referred to with scorn by Mingus, the Shadows soundtrack sketches ultimately yielded the great "Nostalgia In Times Square," "Alice's Wonderland," and "Self-Portrait In Three Colours," all included here.

Complex, emotive, and straddling several genres, Sketches Of Spain is one of Miles Davis' masterpieces, a landmark of orchestrated jazz. The third of his collaborations with Gil Evans, Sketches was inspired by the classical Concierto de Aranjuez, which sparked the suite that makes up the LP. Drummers Jimmy Cobb and Elvin Jones and bassist Paul Chambers reconfigured their approaches to blend with the orchestra under Evans' command and Davis uses a muted flugelhorn for the epic opener; his solo on "Saeta" is blinding and the adapted Andalusian folk song "Solea" draws on flamenco. DAVIS, MILES Jazz Track LP
The Jazz Track LP has an unusual backstory. The bulk of the album is Miles' evocative improvised score for Louis Malle's Elevator To The Gallows (1959), a proto-new wave film about a bungled crime of passion. Davis cut this on the fly with a Parisian pick-up band, the work holding dramatic tension and moody features. In the USA this soundtrack was reissued as Jazz Track with three additional songs first issued on a ten-inch the year before, the last of his work with Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane, and the first with Bill Evans; "On Green Dolphin Street," "Fran-Dance," and "Stella By Starlight" are all stone-cold classics.

THOMPSON, MAYO Corky's Debt To His Father LP
2024 restock. LP version with bonus 7"; one of the great Drag City releases (and one of the great American music solo albums) finally on vinyl again. "In 1970, Mayo Thompson (once-and-future leader of The Red Krayola) recorded an album entitled Corky's Debt To His Father. Walt Andrus' Texas Revolution label released the record -- but just barely, selling a few hundred LPs with no promotion to speak of. The copies that made it into shops became the treasured objects of taste-makers around the globe -- which made Corky's Debt To His Father an influential record down the years. As punk rock, new wave, post-punk and all the rest came along, it was inevitable that this lost classic of independent music would be discovered by a wider audience. In 1988, the album was reissued on the UK Glass Records imprint but went out-of-print again in short order. Then in 1994, Drag City brought Corky's Debt To His Father back to the USA, as well as to the CD format for the first time. Additionally, a third pressing of the vinyl was made. The CD has been a perennial favorite ever since -- but after just a few months of robust sales, the LP artwork and jackets were destroyed in a fire, thus putting the end to the life of Corky's Debt To His Father on vinyl once again. Wrapped in a jacket that recalls the halcyon days of solid LP dominance, this new pressing comes with a 7" single featuring the instrumental 'Woof,' which was recorded at the same sessions but not released until The Red Krayola's 2004 compilation CD Singles. The B-side of this single is a never-before heard take on John Cage's '4'33"' played by fellow traveller Sergei McUgly."

Specially-chosen stand-up comedy recordings from Neil's recent appearances at coveted nightclubs in London, Savannah, and Los Angeles are interspersed with musical cries for help, as Neil emotes with the purely professional panache of the 'Too Good For Neil Hamburger Band' in support. Song highlights include 'Endless Roll,' a disco complaint letter aimed at Kirkland Signature trash bags (featuring guest spots from members of The Germs and Jefferson Starship!!), and 'Nickel Candy': societal decline set to music. FAHEY, JOHN Proofs & Refutations LP
2024 repress. "Recorded in 1995 and 1996, mostly in John Fahey's room at a Salem, Oregon boardinghouse, the performances on Proofs and Refutations prefigure the ornery turn of the page that marked Fahey's final years, drawing another enigmatic rabbit from his seemingly bottomless musical hat. Cloaked in the language of dogma, this is Fahey dancing a jig in the Duchampian gap, jester cap bells a-jingling. Right out of the gate, Fahey re-materializes before us, somewhere between Oracle of Delphi and Clown Prince at Olympus. Mounting a thundering dialectic from on high, 'All the Rains' resembles nothing else in his extensive discography -- betraying roots in everything from Dada to Episcopal liturgical chant -- and contains nary a plucked guitar note. When the lap steel of yore appears on 'F for Fake,' it serves more as soundbed for an extended sequence of vocal improvisations, running the gamut from wordless Bashoian caterwauling to free-form (but decidedly fake) Tuvan, even revealing a burnished falsetto in the process. Fahey takes on a different kind of provocation in the two acoustic guitar-based tracks closing Side 1 -- 'Morning' parts 1 and 2 -- the first of four recordings in this session that have him wrestling with the ghost of Skip James, perhaps Fahey's effort to wrench the 'bitter, hateful old creep' (his words) back into the grave. Anchoring Side 2 is the two-part 'Evening, Not Night,' the second half of his extended cathexis on James. The opening and closing pieces again feature Fahey's guitar as drone soundbed -- employing distortion, oscillation, and an altogether absurd quotient of reverb to create texture and harmonics that are --if we wanna go there -- not dissimilar to the sustained tonic clusters of Tibetan singing bowls, the hurdy gurdy, Hindustani classical music, or La Monte Young. Portions of this material appeared on obscure late '90s vinyl in the 7" or double-78 rpm format, but as a 'session' it has lain dormant more than a quarter century now. Taken together, we can now see these tracks as secret blueprints to latter-day Fahey provocations, several years prior to records like 1997's City of Refuge and Womblife."

GOLDMANN, STEFAN Expanse 5CD
For its first publication, Edition Kymata has commissioned a five-part long-form work from Stefan Goldmann. This expos? to an incorporeal spatial structure captures infinite reverb responses to five carefully designed immersive spaces. Building on his earlier reverb-only work Call and Response (ASH 13-9CD, 2022), the capacity of reverberation to enable the experience of impossible architecture is further explored -- possibly in its clearest form to date. The five zones of intangible aural sensibility compiled in this box set range from soothing to menacing, inviting to a unique critical listening situation in which the listener's perception is the dynamic side of the exchange while the stimulus persists in profound permanence. The properties of the five enclosures -- boundless in the time domain, distinct in their spatial characteristics -- reveal themselves completely and can be precisely described in statistical data, allowing for multiple levels of access: a brief visit, long-term contemplation, exclusive ownership. Stefan Goldmann is an electronic music composer based in Berlin, Germany. Edition Kymata is a publishing house for audio arts with a focus on the study of first principles.

MARKS, KAREN Cold Cafe 12"
2024 restock. Almost four decades since its domestic release, Karen Marks's 1981 single Cold Caf? has finally reaped it's deserved international credit to become one of Australia's most recognized minimal wave recordings. Efficient Space now showcases the Melbourne artist's brief but entire discography, including two previously unheard demos, all produced with experimental synthesist Ash Wednesday (The Metronomes, Modern Jazz, Thealonian Music). A rarity in the then male-dominated industry, Marks found her footing in music, first through rock journalism and then in band management. Formally of Adelaide, newly arrived synth-punks JAB (Johnny Crash, Ash Wednesday, Bodhan X) approached her for representation, subsequently contributing tracks to seminal 1978 snapshot Lethal Weapons and playing the Crystal Ballroom's opening night. Wednesday and Crash would soon dissolve JAB, enlisting Mark Ferry and Sean Kelly to create Models. Still under Mark's management, Models became one of the fastest rising new bands of the punk movement, playing to full houses of dedicated and frenzied fans everywhere. Sadly, internal frictions forced Wednesday and Marks to leave after two years, with Crash following three months later. Her creative relationship with Wednesday fortified with the co-production of his 1980 machine-pop prank "Love By Numbers", her swooning chorus uplifting his deadpan count to 100, before the two collaborated on Marks's own recording persona. Immortalized by the icy Oz wave of Cold Caf?, her Astor issued 7" also boasted the caffeinated flip "Won't Wear It For Long" -- a should be hit with guitar from future Icehouse member Robert Kretschmer. Fans know of one more recording -- "You Bring These Things", a forlorn arrangement of an otherwise unreleased Paul Kelly song, gifted to her by the revered wordsmith. The track only ever appeared on the Astor promotional LP Terra Australis (1981), sinfully alongside "Up There Cazaly" and Joe Dolce -- hard proof that the label grossly misunderstood her talent (Marks recalls their persistent requests to show midriff and cleavage). Locked in a dissatisfying label arrangement and at this stage unwilling to follow her peers to greener pastures overseas, she felt her only way out was to cease all further activities. At the 11th hour of preparing this retrospective, two tracks unexpectedly surfaced via two cassettes -- a paranoid demo version of her signature tune "Cold Caf?", and a long-lost fourth song "Problem Page". Both living room recordings follow Marks and Wednesday's ingenious framework of minimal lyrics, minimal chord progressions.

CAUSA SUI Summer Sessions Vol. 2 LP
2024 repress. Causa Sui's three volumes of Summer Sessions are back in print, originally released in 2009. This time on the band's own label, on individual LPs for the first time since they were first released in 2008 and 2009. Re-packaged in El Paraiso's signature style. Originally the Summer Sessions were intended as a side project for the band -- a chance to explore their love for other genres such as American free jazz, krautrock, 1970s soundtracks, as well as the psychedelia and detuned stoner-rock that characterized Causa Sui's first two albums. But these three albums came to define the band, and have become modern classics of psychedelia and progressive rock since their initial release ten years ago. In a scene often characterized by loyalty to a specific period, there's something refreshing about Causa Sui's eclectic approach. With several guest appearances by Coltrane-devotee Johan Riedenlow on sax and electronics wiz Rasmus Rasmussen, Causa Sui venture far beyond stoner-rock platitudes. Take the grandiose opening statement for example -- the 24-minute "Visions Of Summer" taking up the entire A-side on Vol. 1 (EPR 001LP): here new and old sounds dissolve in a mind-bending excursion that recalls Future Days-era Can, breezy tropicalia or Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi group, as much as it sparks associations to Kyuss or Hendrix. Other tracks, such as the frenetic "Rip Tide" on Vol. 2, heads into straight up free jazz territory with Riedenlow going absolutely bonkers on the sax. But this set also allows plenty of room for atmospheric pieces such as the sun-drenched "Venice By The Sea" on Vol. 3 (EPR 003LP) or the Morricone-esque "Cinecitta" on Vol. 2.

MAZZOTTI, ANA Ninguem Vai Me Segurar LP
2024 repress. LP version. 180 gram vinyl; includes download code. Far Out Recordings present an official reissue of Ana Mazzotti's Ninguem Vai Me Segurar. originally released in 1974. An artist as imaginative and unique as Ana Mazzotti doesn't come around often. Dubbed a "super-musician" by fellow Brazilian virtuoso Hermeto Pascoal, Mazzotti's short but rich musical career culminated in just two studio albums: Ninguem Vai Me Segurar (1974), and Ana Mazzotti (1977). Outside circles of Brazilian funk aficionados, these two gems of spellbinding samba-jazz, lysergic funk and trippy bossa have remained relatively obscure. This was partly as a result of Mazzotti's premature death (she lost her battle with cancer in her mid-thirties), but also due to financial restraints and the prejudice she faced as a female songwriter in a fundamentally sexist society. Born in Caixas, in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul municipality, Mazzotti began to play the accordion aged five, before moving with prodigious ease onto the piano. By the age of twelve she was already conducting her convent school's choir, and at twenty-one she led her city's premier chorus, the Coral Bento Goncalves. When rock n' roll hit South America in the '60s, a young Mazzotti was one of the early adopters, fronting various guitar groups including an all-female Beatles cover band, and an eclectic, eight-piece psychedelic group Desenvolvemento. Before moving to Sao Paulo to start her career proper, Mazzotti met drummer, producer, and fellow music educator Romido Santos, who she would later marry. Romildo introduced Mazzotti to jazz, and music by the likes of Chick Corea and Hermeto Pascoal who she would later befriend and perform with. In 1974, Mazzotti recorded her first album Ninguem Vai Me Segurar, enlisting the in-demand arrangement talents of Azymuth's original keyboard maestro Jose Roberto Bertrami. It also features Azymuth's bassist Alex Malheiros and percussionist Ariovaldo Contestini, with Romildo Santos who produced the album on drums. Recorded in Estudio Haway around the same time Azymuth recorded their debut album there, it's no wonder the samba jazz-funk pioneer's distinctive aesthetic is present throughout, and Mazzotti's sensational compositions are made even more beautiful for it. Kicking off with the swirling samba-jazz-dance masterpiece "Agora Ou Nunca Mais", the album hosts several groove-heavy Brazilian cult-classics. Deeper moments come in the form of the alluring future soul synth sounds on "Bairro Negro" and "Sou", and Mazzotti's tender, hallucinatory version of "Feel Like Making Love" (made famous by Roberta Flack). Remastered.

JOYCE WITH MAURICIO MAESTRO Natureza LP
2024 restock; LP version. Not long after the dawn of her career, as a teenager in Rio de Janeiro, Joyce was declared "one of the greatest singers" by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Yet despite reputable accolades and the fact that she has since recorded over thirty acclaimed albums, Joyce never quite achieved the international recognition of Brazilian contemporaries. There was a moment when it seemed she might be on the cusp of an international breakthrough. While living in New York, Joyce was approached by the great German producer Claus Ogerman who recorded with Jobim and Jo?o Gilberto. Featuring fellow Brazilian musicians Mauricio Maestro (who wrote/co-wrote four of the songs), Nana Vasconcelos and Tutty Moreno, and in-demand stateside players including Michael Brecker, Joe Farrell, and Buster Williams, the recordings for Natureza were produced by Ogerman. Mysteriously, Natureza was never released, and what should have been Joyce's big moment never happened. The Brazilian craze was coming to an end, making way for disco and new wave at the end of the seventies, and Ogerman struggled to find an interested major label. Additionally, it wasn't quite finished. Ogerman wanted to add finishing touches to the mix and to record alternative English lyrics -- a critical artistic difference between Joyce and Ogerman. Joyce had a handful of hits in her home county, including "Clareana" and the iconic "Feminina". Already a feminist pioneer, these successes were hard fought. Joyce had caused controversy as a nineteen-year-old when she became the first in Brazil to sing from the first-person feminine perspective, and the institutional sexism she faced was worsened by the censor-happy dictatorship. A few years after the success of her albums Feminina and Agua E Luz in Brazil, Joyce's music began to find its way to the UK, Europe, and Japan, and "Feminina" and "Aldeia de Ogum" became classics on the underground jazz-dance scenes. The full-length version of "Feminina" from the Natureza sessions was on a Brazilian Jazz compilation (1999) and "Descompassadamente" was licensed for a CD compiling the work of Claus Ogerman (2002). Forty-five years since it was recorded, Natureza finally sees the light of day, as Joyce intended: with her own Portuguese lyrics and vocals. Featuring the fabled 11-minute version of "Feminina", as well as the never before heard "Cora??o Sonhador" composed and performed by Mauricio Maestro, Natureza's release is a landmark in Brazilian music history and represents a triumphant, if overdue victory for Joyce as an outspoken female artist who has consistently refused to bow to patriarchal pressure. While "Feminina" and "Descompassadamente" were mixed by legendary engineer Al Schmitt and mastered from the original master tapes, the remaining five tracks are unmixed. Due to significant deterioration of the master-tapes, the best audio source for these tracks was an unmixed tape copy Joyce had kept of the recordings.

HONORIO, VINICIUS Endless Love 12"
Adding his first EP to the label's catalogue, Figure warmly welcomes Vinicius Honorio onto the roster. Having first made his mark in the DnB-world as BTK, the vetted Brazilian producer now has been conquering the global techno scene for some years as well. His darkly foreboding sound is on full display across this 12", featuring three clean-cut, impactful original productions and a remix by Len Faki's Hardspace moniker. Endless Love comes punching strong, carried by colleague Theo Nasa's ominous spoken words and evolving stab synths textures. The remix strips back the vocals in favor of reduced frequencies, keeping the heat condensed and always ready to boil over. On the flip, Honorio introduces his rolling high-energy machine funk, stacking elements around a hypnotic vocal loop and expertly playing the game of build and release. Closer B2 showcases a different style, using subdued dubby chords to craft a dreamy ride that is at once powerful and deep.

ESPLENDOR GEOMETRICO Strepitus Rhythmicus LP
LP version. The legend continues. After recording an album of the amazing new project ASA together with Uwe Schmidt/ATOM TM, the pioneer cult band Esplendor Geom?trico presents their new album, Strepitus Rhythmicus, of machine-like and futuristic post-industrial music. Electric pulse of mechanical rhythms, hidden voices, and factory noises. E.G. reinvent themselves again and again without losing their unique essence. Based now in Islamabad and Rome, Arturo Lanz and Saverio Evangelista have not stopped their live performances all over the world in the last years with great success. Born in 1980 as a trio, and currently a duo formed by Arturo Lanz (founding member) and Saverio Evangelista (member since 1991), Esplendor Geom?trico is an influential and international electronic cult band and also a rare case in the Spanish music scene, as they have developed their own independent path aside from tags, fashion or trends, in spite of being often classified as industrial music. Their career during this four decades hasn't had interruptions. They haven't stopped composing, releasing albums, or playing live (with more intensity since the nineties), and they have continued for the simple pleasure of making music. Esplendor Geom?trico has achieved a personal and distinct style that can be appreciated from their '80s albums, when they used analog synthesizers and primitive electronic percussion, to the present time with new digital tools. Their influence has marked many later artists, usually classified in the so-called industrial music or rhythm and noise, as well as artists from current techno and certain types of experimental noise music.

RONE L(oo)ping: Live with Orchestre National de Lyon CD
L(oo)ping is a story that began with great trepidation and an initial polite refusal and may have never have been told. Even for Rone, who's used to making bold moves, the orchestra had always seemed a step too far. Motion laid the groundwork for L(oo)ping, a journey in which Romain Allender (who worked The Grand Budapest Hotel by Wes Anderson and The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro amongst others) acted as a creative translator for Rone. Leafing through Rone's repertoire he selected the tracks that would better lend themselves for symphonic reinterpretations. The eleven pieces chosen each mark a different stage in Rone's trajectory, from one of his first-ever productions, "Bora," born in a studio flat in Paris in 2008 when he was still a student, all the way to the soundtrack composed for the 2022 short-film, Ghosts, written by Spike Jonze, directed and performed by (LA)HORDE. L(oo)ping isn't just an orchestral retelling of Rone's work, however. New life has been breathed into the music through Allender's arrangements as well as Rone's own interaction with the Orchestre National de Lyon and conductor Dirk Bross?. There's a rich dramaturgy to the music, but not once does the acoustic trample on the electronic nor vice-versa. Rather, L(oo)ping manages to achieve an elegant and playful tightrope balance between both voices that keeps listeners hooked on suspense and surprise.

UTO When all you want to do is be the fire part of fire CD
UTO presents When all you want to do is be the fire part of fire. Anyone familiar with UTO's lauded 2022 debut Touch The Lock (IF 1067CD), which Pitchfork praised for its "prismatic synth pop," will be aware of the variegated nature of what they do. This album is just as colorful, with Neysa's vocal work sparking similarities to Kim Gordon's off-kilter vocals, which they both ceremoniously jet through a post-electronica blender mixing stylized indie sleaze productions with '90s breakbeats. While they might appear as a singular entity to others, UTO wrote large sections of this album apart, converging by the fireside to discuss the day's work before coming together to hone and finish the songs. 2023 was, by their own admission, a difficult year, and that's reflected in the Dantean themes expressed in songs such as the lead single "Zombie," which arrived at the end of November as a taster for the new record; the latter's dark heart is belied by the skittering beats, glitchy electronics and pummeling sequencers that elevate it from the void. From fire, early man's discovery, to AI, humanity's next great adventure -- with all of the wonders and complexities of human relationships in between -- When all you want to do is be the fire part of fire really is about life, the universe and everything. Just remember, be the flame, not the moth. Featuring HSRS.

POPE, TYLER Pay Attention to the Bass 12"
Tyler Pope's latest EP is an absolute belter, and the primary concern these four tracks are asking of you is right up front: Pay Attention to the Bass. This new release from Pope -- a dance veteran who's also known as a full-time member of LCD Soundsystem as well as a collaborator with artists like Hercules & Love Affair and Pantha Du Prince -- arrives on his always eclectic Interference Pattern label, an imprint that has previously spanned left-field electronic sounds, noise rock, and avant-R&B. As such, Pay Attention to the Bass is anything but straightforward, with ricocheting rhythms and alluring textures that are as easy to get lost in as they are to move your body to. Listeners familiar with last year's Make Each Other Happy EP, which embraced dark disco grooves and crisp percussion, will be delighted at the new curveballs on display here: "Why Must I" euphorically merges the propulsive charge of UK funky with delicious piano-house stabs, while "Okay" anchors itself around a rubbery bass line like a lost cut from the Remain In Light sessions. The flip side gets dark and dank with it, as "Close the Door" echoes with spooky clatter and dubby wobbles before sprightly vibes break through -- and the closing cut "Where Are they Hiding" goes full-on tunnel techno with it, conjuring a mood that recalls the haunted house music of Sandwell District as well as the cold-sweat futuristic visions of jungle. With Pay Attention to the Bass, Pope expands his sound wider than ever, and it just so happens that it's an absolute blast to listen to as well.

DJ SWAGGER Chemistry Forever LP
After his first two one-off singles "Black Pegasus" and "Day Without You" introduced DJ Swagger's massive songwriting abilities and love for recording instruments, his first album on Kommerz Records, Chemistry Forever, showcases his background in UK-leaning electronic music as well as new tendencies towards neo soul, indie pop and jazz. The 25-year-old from West Germany's Bielefeld is pretty much the archetype of a so-called Wunderkind. At his young age the producer, DJ, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter released more than 40 vinyl records including two solo albums and endless rave tracks since turning 16. As of most recently and even though coming from an electronic music background DJ Swagger's creative agenda ventured more and more into classic songwriting and taking over the role of lead vocalist of his one-man-band. His third solo album Chemistry Forever showcases this transformation from UK-influenced electronica towards neo soul and indie without losing its listeners at any point. His subtle melancholic vocal performance and the just as subtle, yet constant pop appeal make this equation solve itself magically. From electro, two-step, breakbeat over hip-hop, indie and R&B to a final bebop madness -- Chemistry Forever is a trip for music lovers while each and every song has heavy potential to be listened to on repeat. Besides his own vocal performances DJ Swagger also invited rappers TripSixVivo (London), Vitus04 (Bielefeld), Kaba (Paris) and poet Dainell Aiken (NYC) for mesmerizing guest performances. Additional production work came from Hamburg dance producer Speckman and jazz outfit Jonas Gersema Trio.

VA She Makes Noise: The Album LP
La Casa Encendida of Fundaci?n Montemadrid was celebrating its twentieth anniversary in 2023. During these past two decades electronic music has occupied an essential part of a program that has recognized its importance and charted its changing face while offering a new and alternative take on the club scene. Festivals like Experimentaclub, Electr?nica en Abril and La Terraza Magn?tica have represented a space for freedom and tolerance, using music as an accurate reflection of their time. In 2015, led by a team of women, La Casa Encendida launched She Makes Noise, the first-ever festival in Spain dedicated to supporting and publicizing the work of women and non-binary people in the fields of electronic music, sound experimentation and contemporary audiovisual creation. Year after year, the festival has promoted this hallmark with the firm commitment of showcasing the diversity of electronic production today and has taken bold strides to delve deeper into an increasingly fluid and cross-cutting SHE with artists from all over the world. On the label's tenth anniversary, La Casa Encendida released a vinyl for the Electr?nica en Abril festival on which all the tracks were by male producers. Ten years later, LCE presents the vinyl for the She Makes Noise festival, a carefully compiled edition that provides the opportunity to highlight the profound transformation that society has undergone in the last decade and demonstrate the important role that small cultural projects like She Makes Noise are playing in this transformation by activating tangible changes in a sector like music where programming increasingly incorporates a more equitable awareness. Featuring Marina Herlop, Poison Arrow, Dis Fig, Okkre, Electric Indigo, Deena Abdelwahed, Slim Soledad, N?dia, and _deleteD.

GOLDMANN, STEFAN Alluvium CD
Layered asymmetry: With Alluvium, Stefan Goldmann explores new structural paths for machine rhythm in irregular meters. Throughout the album, different non-binary patterns run simultaneously, interlocking into twelve offerings of jagged polyrhythmic magic. Such a framework may juxtapose eleven on one axis, against seven on another and five on a third -- building stunningly iridescent edifices of multidimensional time. This is the third album in a series of "first principles" research of metric asymmetry. Veiki (MACROM 059CD, 2019) laid the foundation for "real broken beat." Then, Vector Rituals (2022) explored the bending of grids in order to yield idiosyncratic forms of organizing time. Alluvium takes these two approaches and expands them beyond their initial reach: irregular patterns moving along parallel timelines within one unifying grid.

PERRY, LEE 'SCRATCH' The Revelation Of Lee Scratch Perry DVD
2024 reprint. "This is the music documentary of the making of Grammy?-nominated reggae album Revelation by dub reggae legend Lee 'Scratch' Perry. Perry continues to create unique, category-defying music, drawing his narrative from his spirituality and today's global events. For the uninitiated, Lee 'Scratch' Perry is one of the most important figures in the history of reggae music. Not only did he help develop the early reggae sound captured in a number of important recordings, but as an engineer, producer, songwriter, and performer he pioneered a number of innovations, including dub reggae. This documentary is set at Lee Perry's mountain top home and studio in Switzerland and features some of the actual sessions for the original studio recording of Revelation. It focuses on Lee's work in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Steve Marshall in both his engineering and his producer ('John Saxon') roles. While not appearing in this film, the musical contributions of very special guests Keith Richards and George Clinton, along with Duncan & Green, Tim Hill, Dr Sleepy, Alec Hay, elodie & Abi Browning, and David Stewart Jones, are included. Visually, it is an interplay of color and light, ritual and the mystical aspects of Lee Perry's spiritual and worldly spontaneity, and a frank snapshot of his musical genius. The documentary also includes excerpts of a free-flowing and revealing interview of Lee Perry by Steve Marshall. The Revelation of Lee 'Scratch' Perry is directed by Steve Marshall, photographed by John Palmer, and is a State of Emergency production. DVD extras include the complete interview of Lee 'Scratch' Perry by Steve Marshall." NTSC format.

CELTIC FROST Procreation of the Wicked LP
"It's 1984 and, after the break/up of Hellhammer, the newly formed Celtic Frost are shaping what would become their punishing sound. Recorded just one month after the birth of the band at one of their very first rehearsals, Procreation of the Wicked presents Celtic Frost at their rawest, wildest embryonic stage. 8 tracks of pure unaltered mayhem, everything that would make them legendary is already here, proving once again why they've been such a huge influence for countless Black, Death, Thrash, Heavy Metal and Punk bands all over the planet."

ASH RA TEMPEL Schwingungen LP
2024 restock. MG.ART announce the authorized 50th anniversary edition of Ash Ra Tempel's Schwingungen, originally released in 1972. One of the most important German krautrock albums. Re-cut carefully overseen by Manuel G?ttsching himself. Gatefold sleeve with sticker; Includes original release sheet and inlay.Julian Cope's review on Schwingungen in Krautrocksampler (Head Heritage, 1995): "'Beware of Schwingungen!' That should be the large sticker on the front of all copies of this record. For it is dangerous to be casually introduced to something that is life-changing, as I found out to my cost when first listening to this record. It all starts fairly simply and without any cause for alarm -- 'Look at Your Sun' begins with a Doorsy lone groover guitar begins a pedestrian blues, beautiful. Then the most crushed voice, a cross between Johnny Rotten and Tiny Tim, preaches its way into the proceeds. God, it is beautiful -- John L. repeats over and over, 'We are all one, we are all one', until a howling fuzztone solo guitar blows the whole one chord 'Signed D.C.' ringing-cymbals torture to an end. And then the most far out track of all begins. This is called 'Flower Must Die' and it is a free-rock giant that transcends everything else in its field (there are no contenders.) As I've written before, PIL sounds like this. John L. was John Lydon in a previous incarnation. After a slow weird build, a frantic streamlined one-chord mantra kicks in and it's like the Stooges' Funhouse period but in a Righteous Vision Zone that fucks them right off. Phasing tears at the whole tracks as this Holy Racket crosses into hyper-space and everything gets all hyphenated just-for-the-sake-of-it. 'Flowers Must Die', man, it's fucked up. Over on side two, the title-track ('Vibrations') begins poetically enough with Wolfgang Muller's epic and hugely reverbed vibraphone. Organ fades in and FX guitars, and time passes by. Finally, tom-toms roll and the developing pace is built upon until that great eternal chord sequence finally materializes -- this is the one that G?ttsching and Enke believed was the sound of heaven. They may have been right. And Schwingungen was a gift from the Gods."

VA Blow My Mind!: The Dore Era Mira Punk & Psych Legacy 2LP
Blow My Mind! is the natural sequel to the recent, well-received collection Lost Innocence and is an essential purchase for the dedicated garage head. It collects together the best of the quirkier imprints from Hollywood's heyday in the mid-1960s (the record labels Dor?, Era, and Mira) in a power-packed set comprising many outstanding garage and proto-psych 45s that today are sought-after collectors' items. Compiled by genre expert Alec Palao and originally released by Big Beat/ACE on CD, it is now available on vinyl for the first time. Three of the quirkier imprints from Hollywood's heyday in the mid-1960s were the record labels Dor?, Era and Mira. Like most seasoned indie producers in that epoch, their owners Lew Bedell, Herb Newman, and Randy Wood struggled to get to grips with the onslaught of rock and roll activity that followed in the wake of the British Invasion. Blow My Mind! The Dor?-Era-Mira Punk & Psych Legacy collects together the best of this venerated repertoire in a power-packed set that also constitutes the first official reissue for many oft-bootlegged titles. Cuts like "The Thief," "Slander" and "I'll Blow My Mind" would be expensive to acquire in their original, minutely-pressed incarnation. Here, with top-notch sound and extensive annotation, these totemic garage rock items shine brighter than ever. There is the expected quota of attitude-laden classics such as "My Baby's Barefoot," "Just Wanna Be Myself" and the incredibly snotty "So What!!," along with less heralded gems by bands such as South Hampton Story, the Puddin' Heads, Yesterday's Tomorrow, and the Search. An unexpected bonus is a superb unreleased cut by "Hey Joe" hitmakers the Leaves, along with off-beat garage-psych titles by Simon T Stokes, the Outlaw Blues and the Wrench. Also featuring The Syndicate, The No-N?-Mee's, The Motion, The Lyrics, The Regents, John Winfield Jr., Ty Wagner, Spencer's Van Dykes, The Decades, The Front Page & Her, The Bees, The Tormentors, Basil & The Baroques, and Unknown Ar.

TRAFFIC SOUND Virgin LP
Virgin by Traffic Sound is described as the band's greatest album, capturing the essence of their musical and existential outlook. Recorded by youthful members barely 20 years old, the album reflects the non-conformist, profound, and occasionally otherworldly spirit that characterized the youth in Lima during the late '60s. The influence of Anglo-Saxon psychedelia is evident, representing a defiance against the prevailing conservative traditions of the city. Released in January 1970, the album exhibits the bold and free spirit of late '60s pop music, drawing inspiration from post-Sgt. Pepper's rock and Peruvian psychedelia. The lyrics, predominantly in English, emphasize the youthful desire to break free and search for answers in both the real world and the hidden corners of a stimulated mind. The album was a gateway to a more pedestrian future, where Latin music exerted greater influence, and individual egos re-emerged in the wake of hippy collectivism. Virgin also reflects the band's desire to express themselves freely and dream of becoming rock stars. The recording process involved meticulous analysis of foreign records, shaping the band's ability to mix and arrange their own compositions. The album's context is set against the socio-political backdrop of Peru in the late '60s, characterized by a military dictatorship with progressive policies. While most local rock bands embraced the aesthetics of psychedelia, they were viewed with distrust by political activists. Traffic Sound, however, adopted a political stance with the song "The Revolution," criticizing the military government. Virgin itself is described as a sonic journey with carefully arranged tracks. The album's songs are divided into "Tomorrow" and "Today," each offering a unique emotional and sonorous experience. The album includes notable tracks such as "Virgin (I Can't Regret You, My Friend)," "Tell The World I'm Alive," "Yellow Sea Days," "Jews Caboose," "A Place in Time Called 'You And Me,'" "Simple," "Meshkalina," and "Last Song." These songs cover themes ranging from failed romance to personal rebirth and socio-political commentary, all infused with psychedelic and experimental elements. Virgin set a high standard in Peruvian rock in the early 1970s, showcasing Traffic Sound's musical prowess and leaving a lasting impact on the country's music scene. Despite releasing two more albums in the following years, Virgin remained the band's best-selling record, continuing to resonate with audiences even years after its initial release. Extensive liner notes and the original artwork on tip-on gatefold sleeve.

SHELLY Y NUEVA GENERACION Shelly Y Nueva Generacion LP
Shelly y Nueva Generaci?n was a cult Spanish soul and garage band that left an indelible mark on the late 1960s music scene. Their rare 45s, now classic DJ spins in the mod/psych '60s scene, boast a funky Le Beat Bespoke style freakbeat sound. Three singles were released on Philips between 1968-69, including their stunning take on Nonato Buzar's "Vesti Azul" and the outstanding original "I'm Just a Fool", as featured on Ivan Zulueta's cult film Un, Dos, Tres, Al Escondite Ingl?s. This collection not only encapsulates the entirety of their known discography but also unveils many previously unreleased recordings, providing a treasure trove of sonic gems that now see the light of day for the first time. These recordings were made for a TV show and consisted of international hits of the moment performed by Shelly, mainly soul songs brought to fame by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, and The Four Tops. This compilation stands as both a celebration of the band's legacy and a rediscovery of the timeless allure that made Shelly y Nueva Generaci?n an enduring force in the annals of Spanish music history. GRUPO PAN/JEAN PAUL "EL TROGLODITA" Dices 7"
The mind-flowing "Dices" somehow did not make it onto the Grupo Pan's only album and instead found its home on the B-side of a long-forgotten 1972 single. One can only wonder why this great song with a devastating guitar riff and an irresistible rhythm section was not granted a place in the grooves of the LP of the Venezuelan band? Late '60s hard rock sounds made by salsa musicians! First time reissue! On the flip, a rare hard psych gem from Peru by the one and only Jean Paul "El Troglodita." First time single reissue! The few records released by Venezuela's most prolific percussionist, Nen? Quintero, and his first band sound like a somewhat artisanal classic rock recording from the end of the '60s but made by "salseros" (as involved in salsa music). Their only LP Pan (recently reissued for the first time on Vampisoul) succeeded in overcoming through its grooves the eternal rivalry between the followers of the hard rock sounds and those who, on the contrary, were devotees of salsa. Grupo Pan also released a bunch of 45s mostly comprising LP tracks. Enrique Teller?a (aka Jean Paul) was nicknamed "El Troglodita" (The Caveman) due to his wild performances in his native Peru. Screams, extreme body shaking and, quite often, stage destruction were part of his energetic shows. His hard psych gem "Fuera de Atracci?n" was originally released on a much sought-after 45 on the tiny Peruvian label Rey Record.

Responsible for a significant number of hits between the mid-1960s and early 1970s, the group was also one of the first Jamaican acts to perform widely in Britain. Their debut album Engine 54 was originally released in 1968 and sounds far more rocksteady than ska, recorded with Tommy McCook and the Supersonics. Few if any other acts brought '60s soul and Jamaican rhythms together with such entrancing results. This is the eighth in a series of eleven concerts recorded at the church. This month sees the Arkestra stretching out and reaching blissful height -- the 30+ minute long version of 'Carnival' is worth the price of admission alone, but the same could be said for the monumental 'Nation Rising' or the deep take on Roberto Miranda's 'Faith.' ALVA NOTO + RYUICHI SAKAMOTO Summvs (Remaster) 2LP
2024 restock; double LP version. Released for the first time in 2011, Summvs is the fifth and final installment of Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto's V.I.R.U.S. series. The title Summvs refers to the Latin word "summa" (sum) and "versus" (towards); it serves as a metaphor for the work being oriented towards a collaborative result. The album features "Microon" compositions containing recordings of a 16th tone interval tuning piano -- Piano Metamorfoseador Carrillo en Dieciseisavos de Tono. The album also features two covers of the track "By This River," composed by Brian Eno, Dieter Moebius, and Hans-Joachim Roedelius in 1977. In the album's twelve compositions, Sakamoto's haunting piano arrangements coalesce with Carsten Nicolai's digital rhythms, creating a sonic aura as magnetic as it is meditative. Remastered in 2021 in collaboration with Calyx Studio, the album's recordings are accompanied by two new compositions titled "Monomom" (released digitally in December 2021) and "Kizuna." Like "Monomom," "Kizuna" is the studio version of the homonymous composition recorded during Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto's 2019 Australian tour and included in the album' TWO Live at Sydney Opera House (2019). The work "Kizuna" means "human bond" in Japanese and refers to the title of an animation piece by the Italian contemporary artist Valerio Berruti released in Japan in January 2011. Album art designed by Carsten Nicolai. Mastering by Bo at Calyx.

Originally released in 2023. "Sun Ra, the extraordinary, outlandish, and sometimes controversial pianist, is often described as an 'acquired taste,' with a massive and diverse catalog. This release is a good place to start for uninitiated or dismissive listeners. The album showcases Ra's grounding in the jazz tradition, with unique takes on standards like 'Time After Time,' 'Easy to Love,' and 'But Not for Me.' Not unordinary for Sun Ra, the recording process was informal; 'Can This Be Love?' was recorded in his Chicago apartment in 1955; he is accompanied only by the great Wilbur Ware on bass. The other five tracks, which feature, among others, Ra's longtime associate John Gilmore on tenor saxophone, were recorded at the Choreographer's Workshop rehearsal space in 1962 and 1963. The album was mastered for vinyl by Dave Gardner at Infrasonic Mastering, and pressed at Pallas Group in Germany."

AGAINST ALL LOGIC 2012-2017 2LP
2024 restock. Nicolas Jaar shows he is paying attention to the masses by issuing a widely called for vinyl press of his A.A.L. (Against All Logic) album 2012-2017. Originally issued as a digital-only release back in February of 2018, it's slowly grown to become one of the most cherished releases in the entire Other People discography. Much like Kerrier District did to disco, A.A.L. (Against All Logic) borrows heavily from the samples and sounds ingrained deep within Jaar's listening habits and evidently a record collection packed to the brim with classic soul, house, and most importantly, funk hooks. Keenly twisting these sounds and filtering them through a studio set up that's leaning heavily on the beefed-up kick drums and reverb units to make a well-executed homage to these sounds, pieced together with the inherent idea of making the listener unable to resist the urge to move, be it in a bedroom, basement, or just sat in work staring at a computer screen. A.A.L. (Against All Logic) is both a well-executed homage to all of the above references, yet also just a really strong and enjoyable record from Nicolas Jaar. Its undeniable popularity digitally is sure to see the vinyl evaporate in no time at all.

Born in 1939 in Kermanshah (Iran), Pari Zangeneh is a Soprano singer that lost her sight after a car accident in 1972. Her work over the years on restoring traditional Persian music and regional folk songs is invaluable. In 1976, she recorded this very unique album commissioned by K?noon (Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults), a social organization that produced many kinds of materials (books, films, records) for children in Iran. The arrangements were done by Varoujan (famous for his work with Googoosh, Dariush, etc.) Sourced from the original masters; hard cardboard sleeve + OBI; includes download card.

KLOCK, MARIE Damien Est Vivant LP
In the wake of a profound loss, Marie Klock, a neo-chanson singer and multi-instrumentalist from Paris, presents a poignant tribute with her debut on Pingipung. On Damien est vivant, Marie Klock pays homage to the late poet Damien Schultz. They were intertwined both in artistic collaboration and deep friendship. Marie Klock creates a powerful ode to Damien Schultz's surreal, anarchic, witty and at times provocatively obscene French (English translations are included in the vinyl release). The poet's own voice resounds alongside Klock's, oscillating between spoken word and neo-folk vocals. Recorded in an intimate lo-fi setting with co- producer Julien Louvet, the ten songs are far from a mournful requiem. They showcase idiosyncratic pop music brimming with humor and absurdity. Damien est vivant is a celebration of the unique bond they shared, in past and present. The melancholy sometimes takes on an almost whimsical quality, an allusion to the world as perceived through the lens of two kindred spirits. Marie Klock has appeared as keyboardist on international stages with Sofia Portanet and collaborated with artists such as Jean-Louis Costes, Chilly Gonzales, Charlotte Brandi, and Adrienne Pauly.

VA The Fluxus Newspaper Book
"The complete collection of Fluxus' newspapers featuring work by iconic conceptual artists, writers and composers. This volume collects all 11 newspapers published by the Fluxus artists' collective between January 1964 and March 1979. Although published irregularly, the newspapers promoted Fluxus events and publications -- especially the group's famous multiples and Fluxkits -- with advertising materials, order forms and price lists interspersed throughout. More than just a space for promotion and information, the newspapers featured artworks by more than 60 artists as well as appropriated newspaper headlines, advertisements, articles and comic strips. The Fluxus Newspaper exemplifies the group's 'do-it-yourself' attitude: an approach that is comical, collaborative, interdisciplinary and anti-commercial. The periodical is also an early example of the artist newspaper: a medium which grew out of the underground press movement and flourished in the late '60s and '70s as artists sought new mediums for distributing their work. Artists include: Ay-O, Carol Berg?, Joseph Beuys, Walter De Maria, Willem de Ridder, Robert Filliou, Ken Friedman, Allan Kaprow, Alison Knowles, George Macunias, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Ben Patterson, Dieter Roth, Takako Saito, Wolf Vostell."

Their first album, The Image Has Cracked, came out originally in 1978 and is a wholly unique piece of British post-punk. Beloved by John Peel, and close confidantes of Throbbing Gristle, Alternative TV is one of the most original and beguiling groups of the era. Printed on red color vinyl.

BOYS, THE Boys Only (Black Vinyl) LP
Despite strong followings in Holland and Norway, where keyboardist Casino Steel hailed from, London power-pop pioneers the Boys never achieved the British breakthrough they were due, and after three albums failed to chart, Steel quit, making more space for the twin-guitar attack of Matt Dangerfield and frontman Honest John Plain. Final album Boys Only held echoes of the Ronettes' riveting harmonies, the rock excess of Johnny Thunders, and punky pop of the Ramones, "Miss You" a country punk salute to John Wayne and "Weekend" belatedly acknowledged as an edgy pop masterpiece. In short, a great Boys swansong!

4 SKINS, THE Riot In The Ghetto: Unreleased Radio & Studio Sessions (Red Vinyl) LP
Red color vinyl version. Containing the hits that were only deemed misses by the critics that condemned Oi! as some kind of subcultural fad that favored football and violence way above the bloody good tunes that should by rights occupy the higher rank, 4 Skins' The Unreleased Radio & Studio Sessions encapsulates that energy at its finest. From formidable swarms of police brutality and political injustice, the underlying (and unyielding) socio-political messages experienced from the streets that resonated with every estranged clockwork skinhead of the day are bound to be ticked on every track. After the atmospheric crash of "One Law for Them," dropped in amongst the Radio and blistering Bumper Sessions with "Evil" sitting squarely in its unpolished center is the ska-inflected gallop of "Seems To Me," an unreleased tune reinforcing the notion that there was more to Oi! than meets the laces.

COCOLAS, MADELEINE Bodies CD
With Bodies, Australian composer Madeleine Cocolas unlocks an embodied tidal force. As many of her antipodean compatriots would appreciate, water plays a huge part in the understanding of Australia. Vast fluid bodies spill out from its shores and the dynamism and intensity of these oceans -- physically and psychologically -- act as a guide to the forms of this record. Like these fluid bodies themselves, the record shifts between violent ruptures, as waves of sound collide, before giving way to passages of rich lightness and near tranquility. From Madeleine: "Bodies explores similarities between bodies of water and human bodies and seeks to blur the boundaries between them. These works incorporate sounds of water I recorded on recent trips to the Australian coastline as well as creeks and waterfalls in Far North Queensland. I have taken these recordings and other recordings of my voice and breath and heavily processed them together with synths and electronics so that the boundaries between field recordings, vocals and electronics are also blurred. These sounds together create sonic collages that move in ways to emulate rhythmic cycles that can be found in both water and humans such as waves, pulses and currents. In many ways I consider Bodies to be a companion album to Spectral (RM 4167CD, 2022). Whilst Spectral explores the idea of sounds evoking memories and emotions, Bodies is about being present in your body. Sounds wash over you in ways that are sometimes comforting and inviting and in other moments are overwhelming and dark, but it is in those moments of intensity that I invite people to breathe through that discomfort with the knowledge that time will pass and that moment will move on. When I listen back to these pieces, I often imagine I'm floating on my back with my ears half submerged in the water, being pulled back and forth by currents and tides with a sense of vulnerability and release."

ARGABRIGHT & AFTER AFTER, STUART LA Drones Cassette
A note from Stuart Argabright: "I had gone to LA in early summer of 2021 to help produce a mix tape for Stefan. The tracking went well and I began thinking we might get in some time to do some cassette-based work while we were hot. This worked out too, we recorded across three or four days. I had brought a selection of tapes with voices on them and Stefan had at least six or eight different decks. Almost all of them could playback slower too. Once we had our tapes loaded, we would take off into something else new and in the moment. The result sometimes drifted and blurred, becoming like a kind of pitched down or screwed Lower Broadway jam. Blue Dream; Blue Agave, blue neon path, to Whole Foods. We went to Japan Town. Drove across town one evening to the ocean drive up to Malibu and waves were coming in, through a haze. North to Encino and stayed some nights in Toluca Lake. Then McArthur Park and somewhere else we heard Venice Beach chimes. The Bradbury was in the neighborhood -- that classic set for the interior of JR S?bastien living quarters in the cyberpunk classic Blade Runner -- as well as for the Outer Limits episode starring Rau Culp -- "The Demon with the Glass Hand," written by Harlan Ellison. These memories haunt the tapes going forward."

LUCIFER WAS Underground And Beyond LP
2024 repress. LP version. Sommor Records present a reissue of Lucifer Was's debut album Underground And Beyond, originally released in 1997 as a picture disc LP. Killer hard psych-prog from Norway, Underground And Beyond from cult proto-metal band Lucifer Was, contains songs written in 1971-72, but not recorded until 1997. Established in 1970 in Oslo, Lucifer Was were a powerful psychedelic hard-rock/hard-prog band that lasted until 1975. During those years, they gigged locally and played at some big festivals but they never got the chance to register any recording. The band hibernated until 1996 when they reunited again for a live concert. The chemistry was still there so they entered a recording studio and recorded in just 18 hours their first ever album, Underground And Beyond, featuring songs written in 1971-72. Their line-up included two flute players plus bass, drums and the killer lead guitar of Thore Engen. Fully '70s analog -- a powerful sound with devastating distorted lead guitar and flute. Imagine a cross between Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath, and Atomic Rooster. Remastered sound; includes color insert with liner notes by Klemen Breznikar (It's Psychedelic Baby) plus rare photos.

PERGOLA Zed EP 12"
Stolen Goods Records announce Pergola's cinematic techno Zed EP, featuring a remix from indie-dance legend Curses. Exploring hypnotic, emotionally charged melodies and vast techno breakdowns, the title track opens up the EP with a strong sense of mystery. Suspenseful strings build in anticipation as the bassline filters in intensity, this deep space offering is the perfect example of a tune fit for the club as well as headphone-listening. "Freak" is a beautifully intense piece featuring soft synths marked by subtle scratches, a feel-good vocal and the catchy strum of a guitar. "Zed" is then given the Curses treatment, as the Optimo Music, Bordello a Parigi, and Correspondant artist amplifies its retro feel resulting in nine minutes of pure dark disco hedonism. Closing out the release is an ambient collaboration between Pergola and Luigi Sambuy, "Tunnel" is an ode to the early days of IDM through to the '70s. Zed marks the third release on Lele Sacchi and Asian Fake's Stolen Goods Records and follows up their widely acclaimed Volume 0 compilation as well as the recent collaborative EP between Black Loops and Innocent Soul. Since its launch, the label has seen the support of artists like Dixon, Sasha, DJ Seinfeld, and DJ Sneak, and has garnered plays on prestigious stations like NTS and BBC Radio 1.

LUSTMORD + NICOLAS HORVATH The Fall: Dennis Johnson's November Deconstructed 2LP
2024 restock; double LP version. White vinyl. The Fall is a deconstruction of November by Dennis Johnson. Written for solo piano in 1959, November is the first example of minimalist music composition and was the inspiration for La Monte Young's The Well-Tuned Piano (1964). The 66-minute piece is a collaboration between legendary artist Lustmord and renowned classical pianist Nicolas Horvath, in which they reduce Johnson's original November to its core element and place it in a landscape of complimentary sound. The Fall echoes November, but with further resonance. Recorded in May-June 2019 in Los Angeles, and Misy-sur-Yonne, France.Lustmord, active since 1980, was born of the original "industrial" scene of the period. With its own distinctive approach, blurring the line between music and sound design Lustmord's work has featured in 45 motion pictures including The Crow and Underworld and also in video games, television, and commercials. Recently, Lustmord scored the music for Paul Schrader's movie First Reformed (VAULTWORK 331CD/LP, 2019). While Lustmord is often credited for creating the "dark ambient" genre there is much more nuance to its work than what that label implies. Notable collaborations amongst many include Tool, Melvins, Jarboe, John Balance of Coil, Clock DVA, Chris & Cosey, Paul Haslinger, Karin Park, and Robert Rich.Nicolas Horvath, an unusual artist with an unconventional r?sum?, pianist, and electroacoustic composer is known for his boundary-less musical explorations. Horvath is both an enthusiastic promoter of contemporary music -- he has commissioned numerous works (including no fewer than 120 as part of his Homages to Philip Glass project in 2014) and collaborated with leading contemporary composers from around the world, including Alvin Lucier, Mamoru Fujieda, Jaan R??ts, Alvin Curran, and Valentyn Silvestrov -- and a rediscoverer of forgotten or neglected composers such as Moondog, Nobuo Uematsu, Germaine Tailleferre, Fran?ois-Adrien Boieldieu, H?l?ne de Montgeroult, Jean Catoire, Karl August Hermann.

FRIEBE, RICO Can I Be With You? (Rico Puestel Summer Nostalgia Dub) 12"
Puestel meets his alter ego Friebe again! Can you imagine that this whole song came to Rico Friebe in a dream? In that dream, he was sitting in a strange living room, playing a live set with very odd, weird and partially never-seen-before equipment while everyone was annoyingly talking to him (while performing) -- one person right next to him even told him that he frequently manages to eat glass by accident. According to all this obscurity, he tried to escape into his performance, just looking straight into a weird countertop electronic device that created sound and suddenly he played this completely unknown song with these special vocals kicking in and he immediately fell in love with and got lost in it, forgetting all about the strange situation he was in -- the distracting voices around him fell into a mute state. Shortly afterwards, he woke up and kept trying to remember all the details, the lyrics, the melody, the production, just anything, wandering around like a maniac. Finally, all of it went pretty well and you're now listening to a dream composition. Magic everywhere!

DATASHADER Digital Entropy 12"
Datashader emerges from the shadows with a striking breaks and bass-heavy debut release that challenges the fabric of digital existence. Replete with a Dopplereffekt remix, it nods to the legacy of revered anonymous acts such as Scopex, Drexciya, and Underground Resistance, pushing the boundaries of both electronic music exploration and its conceptual underpinnings. As a critique of the erosion of genuine human connection in the digital age, Datashader delivers a barrage of billowing subs, infectious electro, recon textualized jungle, and techno, serving as a poignant counterbalance to current dance floor-centric norms. It's a contemporary anti-soundtrack that offers a haunting mirror to the societal costs of technological convenience. Musically, Datashader's practice confronts dystopian reality, highlighting the alarming consequence of people becoming mere nodes in a network, reduced to a collection of data points. This is manifested sonically by a blistering assault of breaks, recontextualized IDM, abstract electronics and otherworldly synthscapes, conceived as the aesthetic counterbalance to much of contemporary electronic music's dancefloor focus. Datashader dives deep into genres and influences which stand for a form of sonic resistance.

CARTER, CHRISTINA For Want of Walls Book
"There are no obvious pathways of understanding into or through Christina Carter's For Want of Walls, a catalog of the unknowable more than a book of any easy categorization. Carter has been an active agent in independent music and art since the early '90s, and much like her work in other mediums, her writing follows no predictable template and upends even standard expectations of non-linear structures. The words arrive in segments and at various velocities, quickly shifting perspectives between narrators and timelines, moving from fathoms beneath murky waters to above ground in an undone world. For Want of Walls follows several previous collections of Carter's writing, but is her first book to include visual art. Watercolor paintings act as inversions and co-representations of the written word delivered in a different language, a rough-cut juxtaposition of bold, cut-flower colors. These images map out diagrams of remembered rooms, the floor plans and furnishings of various childhood homes, and forgotten but still grasped presences, all recollected outside of time like a barely held together, yet somehow still vibrant, vaseless bouquet. As Carter's ever-unraveling fragments emerge there are moments of blood, glass, divinity, reflection. Unwonted displays of beauty and waves of warm, generous confusion require an open curiosity. For Want of Walls asks that the reader becomes porous to its efflorescent currents."--Fred Thomas

TONO Y SUS SICODELICO Mister Boogaloo LP
In the few years that the Disper? record label was operative, it managed to open its doors to emerging artists, who were often ignored by the major labels but would go on to leave their mark on Peruvian popular music. In 1967, Disper? commissioned trumpeter To?o Reyes to form a band he called To?o y sus Sicod?licos. During the recording sessions for this album, they performed a series of songs that reflected the latest tropical music trends, in his inimitable style. Instrumentals such as "Mr. Boogaloo", "El Guayacol", "La Anticuchera", "La Peinadora", and "La Fiesta es Ma?ana" are versions that follow the lines traced by the Mexican composer and drummer Leo Acosta. In the early sixties, based in Los Angeles, Acosta played with the orchestras of Harry James, Sammy Davis Jr, Tony Bennett, Herb Alpert, and D?maso P?rez Prado. Mid-decade, Acosta turned to the novel sounds of boogaloo, which immediately caught the attention of young South Americans. The song "Borinque Bella" is another cover version, originally recorded by The TNT Band, based in New York. Another noteworthy influence on the album is the blind Venezuelan organist Tulio Enrique Le?n, who performed cumbias and guarachas enhanced by his Hammond organ, as is the case of "Chin Chin". Songs in vogue at the time complete the album. The best known is perhaps "Es la lluvia que cae", popularized in Spanish in 1967 by Los Iracundos. "Tequila" and "No te bote", by The Champs and Sonora Matancera, respectively, were also classics on Lima's radio stations. "Las hojas secas", by the Mexicans Los Zignos, was so popular that it was even covered by Peruvian rock groups such as Los Steivos and Los 007. The success reaped by To?o y sus Sicod?licos took them straight to another record company, and the group's records were also re-released in neighboring countries, always with striking psychedelic cover illustrations. First time reissue. Includes original striking psychedelic artwork and remastered sound.

BATAAN, JOE Chick-A-Boom/Cycles of You (Red Vinyl) 7"
Back in 2004, Vampisoul played a role in the return to recording of the legendary Joe Bataan, which fully materialized in the lauded 2005 album Call My Name, written and produced by Daniel Coll?s. But first came out the preview 45 Chick-A-Boom/Cycles of You, which quickly became a DJ favorite and guaranteed dancefloor filler, long out of print until now. Hear Coll?s explain how it all happened: "This whole project grew out of a song called 'Cycles of You', which I had written around 2000-2001 with the guitarist and bassist of my band at the time, Easy. The chord progression and vocal melody really reminded me of Bataan, and it occurred to me that it wouldn't be impossible to get him into the studio to do a guest vocal if we ever recorded it. I had met Bataan a few years before at a small, family-reunion style show at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in my neighborhood, where he not only still sounded great, but was also gracious and easy to talk to. By the time we got around to recording with Easy, the band was about to break up but we still had the studio booked. We all agreed that we didn't want to continue as a band, but at the same time, it would be a shame to never record what we had been working on. Around this time Bataan was playing out again, so I went to the show to see him and find out if he'd be interested in doing some vocals with us. He was agreeable, so we decided to turn it into a Joe Bataan session and do 'Cycles of You'. The funny thing is, 'Chick A Boom', a live favorite with Easy, was hastily added so we could have a B-side, but it ended up chosen to be the A-side of the single." Red vinyl.

VA Sharayet El Disco: Egyptian Disco & Boogie Cassette Tracks 1982-1992 LP
2024 restock. Wewantsounds release Sharayet El Disco a selection of Egyptian '80s disco and boogie tracks curated by Egyptian DJ Disco Arabesquo from his vast collection of cassettes. Most tracks have never been released on any other format and are making their vinyl debut with this set. A journey through the funky sound of '80s Egypt, Sharayet El Disco (which can be translated by "Disco Cassettes") features Simone, Ammar El Sherei, and more obscure names from Cairo's cassette culture. Sharayet El Disco is part of an important mission for Moataz Rageb aka Disco Arabesquo. The Amsterdam-based Egyptian DJ has been collecting cassettes from Arab-speaking countries and its diaspora for many years and has amassed a vast collection of Egyptian music concentrating on the '80s, the sound he grew up listening to. His goal has been to search for these rare sounds and make them known to a new vinyl-hungry audience. During this decade, the rich Egyptian music industry, which had seen such stars as Oum Kalthoum, Abdel Halim Hafez, and Warda take the Arab world by storm in the '60s and '70s, was going through a new phase and the cassette format was the cause. This radical change enabled many young musicians and producers to spread their music directly to consumers duplicating cassettes themselves. A new vibrant music scene erupted in Cairo blending their sound with trends coming from the US and Europe including, of course, disco, soul, and funk. The cream from this scene was soon picked up by the most daring labels, including Mohsen Gaber's Alam El Phan, Sout El Hob, and Americana. Sharayet El Disco gives you a glimpse of these great tracks which -- for most of them -- were only ever released on cassette. The set is a unique insight into the diversity of the Egyptian disco sound, from the pulsating disco of "Hezeny" by Hany Shenouda's Al Massrieen band to the boogie of Simone's "Merci", via Firkit El Asdekaa's tongue-in-cheek "Eklib el Sheriet" ("turn the cassette to the other side"), produced by legendary Egyptian musician Ammar El Sherei. The music is both inventive and funky and played with both Western and Arab instruments proving that quality of Egyptian music. Audio remastered for vinyl by David Hachour/Colorsound Studio in Paris. LP artwork by young Egyptian graphic designer Heba Tarek. Includes two-page insert featuring artwork of the original cassettes plus insightful liner notes by Moataz Rageb. Also features Afaf Rady, Dr. Ezat Abou Ouf & el four M, FIrkIt el Ensan, Eman el Bahr Darwish, Firkit Americana Show, and Lebleba.
