(director of the classic films Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, and Pecker)
currently has an exhibit at the Arthur Rodger Gallery on Julia St. in
New Orleans. The showing is of his unique photography and/or
photographic images (stills from various films made into collages and
series). The opening reception was April 1st, April Fool's Day. My
friends and I went, not knowing what to expect; we got there and
immediately -- because of his pencil-thin mushtache -- could point out
John Waters in the crowd of art-gazers and fans of his work. The photos
are still up, and will continue to be through the beginning of May. It
consists of various photo's and stills in that ultra-sleazy John Waters
style: a framed cross made up of different images of Jesus on the cross
used in a variety of films (including cartoon imagery); "Puke In
Cinema," which is a series of pictures of different actors and
actresses vomiting; "Junky," which is a line of pictures of hypodermic
needles being shoved into arms; and, of course, some beautiful
photographs of the wonderfully obese and repulsive transvestite,
Divine. It was quite a treat, and an added bonus was that I talked a
drunk friend into getting his autograph "to The Most Beautiful Girl in
the World, Love, John Waters."
