BROKAW, CHRIS Ghost Ship LP
"Four years after his rock juggernaut Puritan, Chris Brokaw delivers Ghost Ship, a landscape meditation (at sea) for vocals and electric guitars. You need to listen to Ghost Ship from beginning to end. Stand too close to the speaker holding a plastic cup of seltzer with lime and really crank it up. If you have a purple light bulb, screw that into the ceiling fixture, and it will be like seeing Brokaw play the kind of live Brokaw set that puts you on the bottom of the ocean, standing under a transmission tower with a semicircle of effects pedals at its feet. If this sounds vaporous, consider the conversational chords of '8 Or 9 Things', the sharply descending final notes of 'Profile', or the extinction burst of 'Anything Anymore'. Think of echolocation: sonics defining space and distance, time elapsing, the disappearance of something -- maybe drugs or a doomed love, possibly in the same form. Chris Brokaw is perhaps best known for his work with the bands Codeine and Come. He has released over two dozen solo albums of instrumental and vocal music since 2002, and played in The New Year, Pullman, Charnel Ground and the Lemonheads. He has scored nine films, most recently Crookedfinger by Julia Halperin and Jason Cortlund, and written for dance and arts associations, most recently Lowlands with Rimi/Imir in Stavangar, Norway. He has recorded and performed as an accompanist to Thurston Moore, Christina Rosenvinge, Rhys Chatham, Jennifer O'Connor, Steve Wynn, and GG Allin. Currently he plays in Lupa Citta (with Sarah Black and Jenn Gori), the Martha's Vineyard Ferries (with Bob Weston and Elisha Wiesner) and the Chris Brokaw Rock Band (with Clint Conley and Luther Gray). He continues to perform periodically with Codeine and Come. Recorded and mixed by Paul Kolderie at Wool\y Mammoth MA and Camp St. NY October and November 2024."

SHIT AND SHINE Mannheim HBF 2LP
"So the bad news is, in a fit of pique, I asked Chat GPT (nicely) to compose a one-sheet for the new Shit and Shine double album, Mannheim HBF. The even worse news (yes, even worse than resorting to such tactics) is that the resulting biography is halfway passable and on some levels, superior to the sort of thing being published by what's left of our weekly coupon-shoppers. But for fuck's sake my friends, Craig Clouse did not get to where he is today by settling for halfway passable and neither should you. That Shit and Shine's discography is vast and dizzying is already well established; what's not nearly as established are these recordings being specifically dizzying. I don't know if there's anyone else in modern music as skilled in waltzing around the periphery of so many disparate idioms ('noise,' being one of the least prominent this time around) and somehow, against all odds, tying 'em together in the most intricate of knots. And who doesn't love knots? We all have our favorite ways to experience music that's all-engulfing, but whether your preferred method is thru a stadium sized sound system or ear buds affixed as you've leapt off the tallest building in Bastrop, TX (the Jerry Fay Wilhelm Center for the Performing Arts, since you asked), not for the first time, Shit and Shine is entirely appropriate in either instance, possibly every instance. There are moments where I think this is a club record. The Friars Club, however. Far be it from me to provide guidelines for how and when you take in Mannheim HBF. 'No interruptions,' 'no distractions' are merely suggestions on the label's part, though we cannot be held responsible for what happens if you ignore 'em. Thank you." --12XU Records

JUPITER & OKWESS INTERNATIONAL Ekoya LP
"Jupiter Bokondji, an iconic figure from Kinshasa nicknamed the 'Rebel General', offers the world a unique sound where Congolese roots blend with rock, funk and soul influences. With his group Jupiter & Okwess, he unleashes an explosive energy, drawing on the musical richness of his country while forging links between Africa and the world. After winning over international audiences with Hotel Univers, Kin Sonic, and Na Kozonga, here is their fourth album, Ekoya. In this opus, Jupiter invites listeners to reflect: what does this '?a viendra' mean? Is it a premonition of an inevitable fate, or a certain fatalism? fatalism? By welcoming female voices into its all-male band -- women who are also rebels -- Jupiter upsets expectations. Was it a conscious choice or a twist of fate -- perhaps a bit of both. The album opens with the crowing of a rooster, followed by the haunting voice of Soyi, a Mongo singer discovered in Florent de la Tullaye's documentary Pygm?es Blues. With a few words in Lingala, she denounces the ravages of deforestation and the suffering of the indigenous peoples, who are abandoned in the midst of general indifference. Then Mare Advertencia takes the floor to amplify the voices of the women of Chiapas, followed by Flavia Coelho, a friend of the group. In Ekoya, Jupiter tells listeners that 'lightning comes with the wind,' that 'pride goes before ruin' and finally that 'he who laughs last laughs hardest.' These are just some of the images he likes to use to make us think. In 'Congo Blinders,' he discusses the country's unity and internal problems, while Orgullo gives a lesson in humility: 'The rich man refuses the company of the poor; the intelligent man just wants to be listened to; the handsome man wants to be noticed; and the strong man wants to be feared.'"

WISE, ROBERT The Andromeda Strain UHD/2xBLU-RAY/CD
4K ultra HD. Region code 0. "Before he created Westworld and Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton first blurred the line between science fiction and science fact with his breakout success The Andromeda Strain. Two years after the novel's publication, Robert Wise (The Haunting) directed the film adaptation, a nail-biting blend of clinically-realized docudrama and astonishing sci-fi visuals that ushered in a new subgenre: the 'killer virus' biological thriller. A government satellite crashes outside a small town in New Mexico -- and within minutes, every inhabitant of the town is dead, except for a crying baby and an elderly derelict. The satellite and the two survivors are sent to Wildfire, a top-secret underground laboratory equipped with a nuclear self-destruct mechanism to prevent the spread of infection in case of an outbreak. Realizing that the satellite brought back a lethal organism from another world, a team of government scientists race against the clock to understand the extraterrestrial virus -- codenamed 'Andromeda' -- before it can wipe out all life on the planet. Aided by innovative visual effects by Douglas Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey, Silent Running) and an unforgettable avant-garde electronic music score by Gil Melle (The Sentinel), Wise's suspense classic still haunts to this day, and is presented here in a stunning, exclusive new restoration from the original negative."

AURAL FLOAT South Of The Clouds Pt. 2 Remixes 12"
Break New Soil are beyond excited to release new remixes of an absolute classic tune by none other than Aural Float, the legendary collaboration between Pascal FEOS, Gabriel Le Mar, and Alex Azary. Originally released on their debut album Introspectives on the mighty Elektrolux records back in 1995, South Of The Clouds Pt. 2 quickly became the standout track of the longplayer and an absolute fan favorite as it encapsuled the very essence of the no nonsense hypnotic sound of Frankfurt at the time. On the A-Side, label head honcho Gregor Tresher presents an epic 11-minute journey that pays homage to the timeless original while updating it for the modern-day dancefloor. Through layers and layers of subtle percussion lines, Gregor?s remix builds up over time, with bold breakdowns that gives the distinctive melody line time to breathe, only to eventually culminate in bringing the massive beat back to take things to the next sonic level. On the flip, our good friends Extrawelt deliver another outstanding production once again, that has their signature sound written all over it. The boys respectfully incorporate the original melody line, while perfecting their remix by adding their unmistakable trademark sound and sophisticated beat structures.

ROEDELIUS Selbstportrait Wahre Liebe LP
2025 restock; LP version. The first part of Hans-Joachim Roedelius's Selbstportrait (Self-Portrait) series was originally released under the title Sanfte Musik on Sky Records in 1979. Now, some forty years later, a new instalment has arrived in the form of an album entitled Wahre Liebe. One of the initiators of the Berlin Zodiak Free Arts Lab in 1967, Roedelius went on to co-found Kluster/Cluster and Harmonia, unleashing a new and free form of music which, with the benefit of hindsight, can be considered a milestone in the historical context of kosmische musik and krautrock. In the late 1970s, Roedelius began to increase his activities as a solo artist, building up an extensive and multifaceted body of work over the ensuing decades. Across this timeline, the Self-Portrait albums represent an intensely personal and noteworthy corpus in their own right. Over the past ten years, the Hamburg-based label Bureau B has reissued numerous Hans-Joachim Roedelius albums, both solo and collaborative efforts, introducing him to a new generation of potential devotees. In 2014, label founder Gunther Buskies approached Roedelius to suggest that he record a new instalment for the Self-Portrait series, using the same instruments which dominated his productions in the late 1970s: a Farfisa organ, drum machine, tape-delay and a Rhodes. Together with Onnen and Wolf Bock, the album Wahre Liebe (True Love) was created. Roedelius explains the process: "The Wahre Liebe album was commissioned by Gunther Buskies, who wanted to know if the elderly Roedelius, armed with vintage tools, was capable of 'beaming back' to his youthful years, reaching into the sonic past of the Self-Portrait series to deliver similarly persuasive results. What better proof could there be that true love, age-old love never dies..." Sure enough, this album successfully and seamlessly connects with its antecedents. Miniatures, improvisations, atmospheric images, and dreamlike introspections of an individualist are articulated in that innate Roedelius language which is at once brittle and as light as a whisper, a pastel ribbon weaving its way softly through the full range of sonic topographies. Hans-Joachim Roedelius is pleased with the outcome: "Roedelius has been granted the opportunity to become intimately acquainted with his own self in order to achieve that of which he is ultimately capable, namely his calling: to follow in the footsteps of his ancestors, to create authentic art, be it music or words, or anything and everything else which fascinates him."

SCHNITZLER, CONRAD Con LP
2025 restock; LP version. Bureau B present a reissue of Conrad Schnitzler's Con, originally released in 1978. Conrad Schnitzler: In the electric garden by Wolfgang Seidel, May 2020: "... Whilst on shore leave in D?sseldorf, Conrad Schnitzler heard about a professor at the School of Art (Kunstschule) who also accepted students into his class without high school diplomas. Conrad Schnitzler became one of them. The spirit of a fundamental new beginning bonded this generation of artists together, with Karlheinz Stockhausen and Gottfried Michael Koenig the most radical proponents. Perhaps it was due to the fact that music had been so corrupted under National Socialist rule, from classical to the Schlager variety. Schnitzler was fascinated by the new sounds he heard on the radio in the evenings. To his ears, they connected the struggle for independence to the planning and precision he had learned as a mechanical engineer. At the same time, he understood that music like this was only possible within an institutional framework to which he had no access. So, he set about creating his own framework. Schnitzler bought his first synthesizer in the early 1970s -- a considerable investment at the time. The introduction of the compact cassette had liberated duplication and distribution from the realm of the record company, but Schnitzler also recognized the creative potential of the medium, beyond its practical functions. He built a 'cassette organ' out of 12 cassette recorders and two cases for his musical collages. Towards the end of the decade, he could be found on the Kurf?rstendamm, West Berlin's premier boulevard, cassette recorders slung over his shoulders as his music boomed out of battery-powered loudspeakers . . . Buoyed by the success of Tangerine Dream, Peter Baumann, Schnitzler's successor in the band, established the Paragon Studio. Schnitzler had left after their first LP in the belief that the creative potential of the group had reached its limit, but their friendship endured. Baumann made use of downtime in the studio to pursue his own musical experiments. And then Conrad Schnitzler appeared at the door with a small Korg synthesizer, a sequencer, and his EMS Synthi (a portable model in an attach? case), having transported the whole lot on his delivery bicycle . . . The last record to be completed at Paragon reveals Schnitzler's lighthearted rapprochement with German New Wave (Neue Deutsche Welle) . . . The Paragon Studio era, with sound engineer Will Roper, whose work with Schnitzler gave him the opportunity to demonstrate his skills in tape manipulation, splicing, editing, and looping, came to an end when the studio was sold and Peter Baumann moved to the USA."

NIESWANDT, HANS Fluoreszent CD
Fluoreszent is the new solo album by Cologne based artist Hans Nieswandt and his third for Hamburg's Bureau B label. Hans Nieswandt is a long standing and highly respected key figure in the music scene of Cologne, of Germany and beyond. As a pioneering DJ since the mid-eighties, as writer and editor for the mighty Spex magazine in the early nineties, and as a music producer, solo and with his group Whirlpool Productions, he helped shape the Sound Of Cologne from the mid-nineties onward. A lot of his musical work at that time took place in the studio owned by legendary band CAN. With his 12-year-running, weekly radio mix show 'Elektronische Melodien' on WDR (the Cologne radio station that built the first studio for electronic music in the 1950s) he suffused generations of listeners with cutting edge electronic music both old and new. Having left Germany to live in Seoul in late 2019, Hans Nieswandt suddenly found a lot of time to check back and immerse himself in all the forms of music that shaped him ever since he was a little glam rock kid in the early seventies -- before becoming a hippie boy, then a punk, then a house head. Now he is all these things rolled into one and the time has come for a proper, new solo album having released mainly collections of remixes, edits and cover versions over the last 20 years. Recorded in 2024 in Seoul, you will find on Fluoreszent ten shiny, fresh, joyous songs taking you to many wonderful places; from Kraut to goth, synth wave to art pop, cosmic to comic -- and all the way to the end of the rainbow. Important contributions came from unexpected sides: legendary German krautrock drummer Wolfgang Seidel gave him permission to use a lot of his beat recordings, a connection was made by Seoul-based German free music pioneer Alfred Harth, (who also took the album cover photo), more drums came from Philipp Janzen of the band Von Spar (who also did the final mix of the album) and the mastering is by J?rg Burger, another living legend of the Cologne electronic music scene. Housed in a cover designed by top illustrator Felix Reidenbach, Fluoreszent marks the happy return of one of Cologne's finest to the international stage.

FALL, THE The Real New Fall LP: Formerly 'Country On The Click' (The Complete Collector's Edition) LP
"This is the first time this album has been released on vinyl in this original intended running order, as the original 2003 pressing was pressed with the wrong running order and was never corrected -- until NOW! Released on red yellow vinyl. The subtitle is explained by the fact that the tracks were originally scheduled for release in April 2003 under the title Country on the Click. Promotional copies were sent out and three of the new songs were previewed in the bands 23rd Peel Session, but Mark E Smith was unhappy with the mix and decided it needed further work. Pitchfork called it 'as valuable an album as anything The Fall ever released in the 1990s' and stated that 'Smith's lyrics are at a near career-best of insolence and nonsense.'"

JUICY FRUIT Liferaft (Remastered) 12"
Definitive Recordings presents the reissue of deep house classic Liferaft by Juicy Fruit (aka Meredith Ledger), fully remastered and set to breathe new life into one of the '90s most iconic releases. Originally dropped in 1993, this EP features the original as well as remixes by John Acquaviva and The Stickmen. The standout title track, "Liferaft," is a rich and soulful deep house gem, built around a captivating piano house theme that harks back to the golden era of house music. The track's groove is driven by a classic house beat and a funky, rhythmic guitar lick that perfectly complements its melodic core. The fresh remaster brings new clarity to its timeless warmth, elevating it for modern sound systems while keeping the vintage charm intact. House music legend John Acquaviva takes the funky guitar lick and pushes it further into the groove, layering it with a robust and simplistic bassline. His remix evolves into a deep yet vibrant soundscape, showcasing Acquaviva's signature house influence. The "The Stickmen Dub" intensifies the original's foundation by supplementing it with a hypnotic organ sound. This new expanded edition features the original studio album along with a second disc of demos, an alternate take, and a live performance. The band's spiky songs have been known to leave listeners in a discombobulated trance. Former/current projects include Puff Pieces, Antelope, Weed Tree, Light Beams, Vertebrates, and Stigmatics. GASTR DEL SOL Upgrade & Afterlife 2LP
Repressed, 2LP version. "2025 is the new 1996! Fresh from them halcyon end-of-century days of the Chicago postrock communal living hostile comes an awesome new vinyl pressing of Gastr del Sol's Upgrade & Afterlife, just in time for its 29th anniversary. Way back when, Upgrade & Afterlife was the umpteenth release from the individual and collective forces of David Grubbs (known then for Bastro, The Red Krayola, Codeine, Squirrel Bait) and Jim O'Rourke (known for O'Rourke), whose further history has since numbered at least another umpteen or so essential listens. What is it though, wrapped up in delectable sonic amber here, that defines this Upgrade? As part of its time-traveling function, Upgrade & Afterlife is a return to roots, but not always necessarily Gastr's. They were more than happy to stand on branches up above other folks in order to see any next thing worth leaping for. Opening at their most incandescently impressionistic, 'Our Exquisite Replica of Eternity' has no precedent in the Gastrlog, and few in most others, either. 'Rebecca Sylvester' uses vocal harmonies to sharpen their singular, gamelan tone poem song form into something resembling a pop reverie at the finish. With undeniable (albeit oblique) comedy, 'The Sea Incertain' comments upon Crookt, Crackt, or Fly's 'The C in Cake,' with the presence of cracked electronics here and elsewhere taking a more forward position. The stentorian chamber piano sound introduced on 'Mirror Repair' is still in full effect throughout Upgrade, but the bluesy rattling of finger style acoustic has the last word, with a tranced-out reading of John Fahey's version of 'Dry Bones In the Valley,' weaving guitar, piano and Tony Conrad's trademark droning violin together to close the proceedings with an ingenious, slow-acting bang. In addition to the elder-statesman Conrad, Gastr del Sol drew upon a memorable spectrum of players for the sounds of Upgrade & Afterlife, including Anthony Burr, Steve Braack, Gene Coleman, Mats Gustafsson, Terri Kapsalis, John McEntire, G?nter M?ller, Jerry Ruthrauff, Ralf Wehowsky, and Sue Wolf. When issued, this combination of players, parts and play -- packaged in an impressively broad tip-on Stoughton gatefold sleeve emblazoned with Roman Signer's instantly iconic 'Wasserstiefel' image -- became the fastest-moving Gastr del Sol record to date. A delightful result, to our way of thinking, of the band's ability to push at the far boundaries of their music while consolidating upon pleasure points within sounds and songs."

NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY & BITCHIN BAJAS Totality LP
"Years past the space time of Automaginary, Bitchin Bajas and Natural Information Society have reported back at last from beyond. If the new title doesn't clue you, Totality brings good news. Since their first collaboration, the path ways that lead from Natural Information Society's ecstatic all-world jazz to Bitchin Bajas' microtonal soundscapes have grown ever finer in their articulation. Across the spectrum, the septet balance a deeply searching mood with wonderfully in-pocket production feel. This makes for collective aural transport of the highest order to all those listening in. In the time since their 2015 first convergence, the Natural Information Society have released four albums (one in collaboration with Evan Parker, one with Ari Brown) and Bitchin Bajas five (one a soundtrack, one with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, one featuring the songs of Sun Ra). Given the multivarious paths both groups have traveled, it makes sense that their second convergence seems to emanate from centuries, eons beyond or below -- some undefinable elsewhere -- from their first. Totality is that. These days, Natural Information Society is populated differently. From the sextet NIS that co-created Automaginary, Joshua Abrams, Lisa Alvarado and Mikel Patrick Avery remain. In the stead of the departed former players is Jason Stein on bass clarinet. This might account for some mere impression of aspects of time, space and evolution to be found here -- but then again, Bitchin Bajas flow on in their long-standing trio configuration (Cooper Crain, Dan Quinlivan, Rob Frye), so the 'people in the room' theory of how Totality ever got this way will only take us so far. Recorded in a single day with Greg Norman at Chicago's Electrical Audio, then slowly considered into the finished record we hear here, Totality is a sweet-tempered second child. It experiences time in ways the first kid didn't. If you're in it for slow-shifting trance formations, it's gonna be cool. There's lots here for you, lots of simmering time and synth atmospheres dappled with radiant woodwinds -- but there's some head-snapping hypno-rhythms that stand apart from the groove energies of the first one. It's just natural facts: two different days in time separated by years, with the experience of several live encounters between the two groups in between. Beyond that, only the music can say anything else. That said, here are a few thoughts from this listener's log... The low-key revolutionary thump of 'Nothing Does Not Show' and 'Clock no Clock' notwithstanding, Totality charts impressive new launch angles from NIS & BB's improvisatory heart, with their careful listening and response time continually redefining the space in a relaxed manner that rewards deep zoners. Additionally, their blended corps assimilate marvelously on Abrams' composition, 'Always 9 Seconds Away.' Here, and with the aforementioned groovers, the collective resonates beyond familiar kraut/spiritual/minimal power lines, bringing new time conceptions to bear in the always-expansive space of this album event. It's about time we got back to the singularly-divined space of Natural Information Society & Bitchin Bajas with Totality. That's the best way to way to define this new music -- it's about time."

MORRISON AND ALASDAIR ROBERTS WITH PETE JOHNSTON & FRIENDS, MAIRI Remembered in Exile: Songs and Ballads from Nova Scotia CD
"As many Scots from both Highlands and Lowlands have done before them, musicians M?iri Morrison and Alasdair Roberts made the long journey over the ocean to Canada in June 2023. However, theirs was not a perilous sea voyage, nor a permanent relocation; rather it was for a transatlantic collaboration instigated by Nova Scotian bass player and musical arranger Pete Johnston. The trip resulted in a new album, Remembered in Exile: Songs and Ballads from Nova Scotia, M?iri and Alasdair's long-overdue second album together following 2012's critically acclaimed Urstan. The album's title is an allusion to John Lorne Campbell's book Songs Remembered in Exile, a collection of songs of Scottish Gaelic origin found in Cape Breton and Antigonish County, Nova Scotia. Featuring ten traditional Canadian songs with Scottish roots, Remembered in Exile draws heavily on the pioneering work of Nova Scotian folklorist Helen Creighton, who collected a vast amount of traditional song material on Canada's eastern seaboard. The album's songs are drawn from Creighton's published works including Songs and Ballads from Nova Scotia and Gaelic Songs in Nova Scotia. They are musical artifacts of the westward journey undertaken by Scottish fishers, crofters, merchants and their families as they migrated -- willingly or otherwise -- to Canada from the 1600s to the mid-1800s. A native of the Isle of Lewis, M?iri takes the lead on a handful of Gaelic language songs, mostly collected in Cape Breton, while Alasdair leads on some Canadian variants of the types of Scots ballads for which he has become well known. There are also a couple of 'macaronic' songs in both English and Gaelic. Anchored around Pete's steadfast bass playing and sensitive arrangements, as well as Alasdair's guitar work, the songs are further enlivened by the skills of a fine group of players: Sarah Frank on fiddle, Jake Oelrichs on drums, Mike Smith on banjo and Andrew Killawee on harmonium. Produced by Pete Johnston and Mike Smith at Fang Recording in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Remembered in Exile is by turns genial and playful, somber and brooding. It constitutes a fine and fitting follow-up to M?iri and Alasdair's first album together, charting new waters and reforging the longstanding bond between old Scotland and Nova Scotia."

ZEITGEIST FREEDOM ENERGY EXCHANGE Inspire // Radicalise 2LP
At the heart of this double album, and amid the intense internal struggle between creative instinct and artistic reasoning, Ziggy has identified two key themes: inspire and radicalise. It is within this duality that the 15 tracks of this new work, recorded between Berlin and London throughout January 2024, take shape. Throughout its creation, the crew enlisted a familiar pallet of materials, seeking those obscure and vintage music-making machines, meeting a myriad of percussion and drums with the new addition of electric guitar as the band ventures into disco/highlife inspired territories. Bringing this ambitious project to life, Ziggy enlisted a team of forward thinking musicians across Europe and the UK alongside old friends and collaborators from the grassroots in Melbourne, Australia: Lewis Moody (Energy Exchange Records), Szabolcs Bognar (Abase), Eric Owusu (Jemba Groove), and Tom Varrall (Jamie Cullum) form the core rhythm section alongside a hefty list of guest appearances (from the likes of Oscar Jerome and Tom Driessler) making this truly the most ambitious and diverse incarnation of ZFEX to date.

PASCOAL, HERMETO Hermeto LP
2025 restock; LP version. Far Out Recordings presents Hermeto Pascoal's remarkable self-titled debut album. Recorded in 1970 at A&R studios in New York, the album features certified North American titans including Ron Carter, Hubert Laws, Joe Farrel, and Googie Coppola, and Brazilian stars Airto Moreira and Flora Purim (who also produced the album). While it was Hermeto's first album released under his own name, he had spent the decade or so prior making a name for himself in Brazil and internationally as a composer, arranger and instrumentalist with groups including Sambrassa Trio, Quarteto Novo, and Brazilian Octopus, before going on to work with (amongst countless others) Edu Lobo, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Donald Byrd, Airto Moreira, and Miles Davis, who allegedly called Hermeto "one of the most important musicians on the planet." With Hermeto's otherworldly orchestral arrangements, ghostly vocal performances from Flora Purim and Googie Coppola, and the inimitable drumming and percussion stylings of Airto Moreira, Hermeto easily rivals some of the oft-celebrated MPB albums of the early 1970s, sitting somewhere between the string-heavy magic of Arthur Verocai's 1972 debut and the unplacable early experimentalism of Pedro Santos' 1968 album Krishnanda. With his phenomenal natural musical genius and a ceaseless sense of creative freedom, Hermeto is widely known for using unconventional objects to make music. In the album's sleeve notes, Airto highlights the track "Vel?rio (Mourning)" explaining how Hermeto filled 36 apple juice bottles with different amounts of water and tuned them to precise pitches in order to create the beguiling harmonies heard. The reissue of Hermeto Pascoal's Hermeto follows Far Out's recent unveiling of a previously unheard Hermeto Pascoal live concert Planetario da Gavea from 1981 (FARO 229CD/LP), and 2017's release of Hermeto Pascoal's lost 1976 studio album: Viajando Com O Som (FARO 200CD/LP).

GUIDED BY VOICES Universe Room LP
LP version. "Universe Room is the eighteenth Guided By Voices album in ten years and packs a vast mix of energy levels and sounds into seventeen diverse tracks in less than forty minutes. The new record ventures into truly surprising territory, where barely any song segments and choruses are revisited and fidelity daringly shifts between lo-fi and hi-fi. 'I wanted to create, hopefully, an experience, kind of a wild ride, where the listener would want to hear it multiple times in order to grasp all the sections and fields of sound to discover something new with each listen,' says Robert Pollard. 'I trimmed down the songs so that there wasn't a lot of repetition, so you get a lot of sections that happen only once or twice.' Universe Room embodies a realm of new horizons for Guided By Voices, who continue to redefine and expand as they blast off to unpredictable worlds."

DIE HAUT AND NICK CAVE Burnin' The Ice (Clear Vinyl) LP
Clear vinyl version. "Nick Cave, new in Berlin, entered the world of Die Haut in 1982. The result is a furious album that paves the way for the music that Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds have been making since 1984. Burnin' The Ice has not been available for a long time. Now the record is being reissued on vinyl -- and after many years, it closes a gap that drove Cave completists to despair. No wild god has fallen from the sky yet. Not even Nick Cave, perhaps the best music performer of the present day. Cave has worked hard for his power, his aura, his reputation. An important early milestone on this journey: Burnin' The Ice, released in 1983 together with Berlin band Die Haut. An album like a contemporary document. A ticket to the diffuse and adventurous Berlin of the early '80s, right in the middle of Nick Cave's hot period between The Birthday Party and The Bad Seeds. Burnin' The Ice captures the moment when Nick Cave and Die Haut first developed the music that would later make him seem larger than life. The sound on this record is existential and experimental. Interested in ecstasy and excess. Relentless and uncompromising. Nick Cave's work is actually considered to be well documented. Burnin' The Ice was the exception. That is about to change. The Hit Thing label, curated by Larry Mullins, part of the Bad Seeds' live lineup, has gained Cave's attention with releases such as Morphosa Harmonia and Mullins' own production Camissionia. New vinyl mastering by Doug Henderson, responsible for the mastering of Swans, among others. An LP that was almost thought to be lost is available again."

HARDSPACE H006 12"
Label head Len Faki continues his legacy of personalized remixes with this two-tracker, combining a personal favorite of him with a more recent output from his peers. First up is the euphoric "010X" by Benjaming Damage, whose anthemic chords have been ringing in our ears ever since its first release back in 2013. Faki reframes the standout lead and packages it neatly within his own jacking percussion, beefing up the low end and giving the melodic original a pronounced bassy drive. Rewinding yet another decade, Aquatrax' "Stabilize" pulsates with the relentless energy of late '90s techno, formative years for Len Faki as an artist and also club regular. His take on the UK classic introduces a hypnotic dubby swirl, one of those perfect loops that is captivating from start to finish. The details ebb and flow with a subtlety unusual for his Hardspace alias, creating an immersive journey that's impossible to tap out of.

GIFFONI, CARLOS Vain LP
2025 restock, last copies. Vain marks the prodigal return of Venezuelan artist Carlos Giffoni to the avant-electronic music scene he was instrumental in shaping with the seminal, hybridiszng No Fun Fest and No Fun Productions label, which was home to debut releases by Oneohtrix Point Never and Noveller, and classics from Haswell and Prurient during the late '00s to early part of the '10s. Carlos's first new release in six years, Vain was drawn from hundreds of hours of improvisations made at Carlos's Malibu studio, the final LP describes a tumultuous narrative in affective abstract swells and pulsating rhythms that trigger curious sensations and emotions ever familiar to his variegated, extreme, yet essentially organic output. Despite not releasing anything for the past six years, Carlos still sounds like he lives and breathes electronic music. Where those "noise" artists who originally played at No Fun Fest and released on his label have arguably carved out major career paths from myriad mutated genres, Carlos's music still feels captivatingly ancient yet advanced and uncannily hypnotic. In a cascade of minimalist Arps and cloud dynamic harmonies, the album's story starts in the vortex of "Vain's Face" and sweeps through the granular flux of "The Desert" to a staggering piece of noise techno dissonance in "Erase The World", which calves away into the curled plunge of "Hands" and the anxious needling of "We Pay The Price". At the mid-way point it turns lusher with the pulsing and coruscating kosmische tang of "Stop Breathing", leading to the metric complexities woven into "Faith And Pain" and the heightened high-register sensitivities of "I Can Change", whose shatterproof hyaline steeples ultimately deliquesce into the shimmering beauty of "Sun Rain". With hazy resolution and ambiguity of effect, the record works its magick in memorable style. Like the best abstract sonics of Peter Rehberg or Keith Fullerton Whitman, an intuitively applied formula of geometry, rhythm, tone, and timbre add up to inexorable effect, rendering the closest possible connection between the machines and the artist's pathos. For synesthetes and attuned listeners, the effect is likely to conceive new colors on the mind's eye and move them to finer states of emotive response. In others words: it's a seriously good listen. Cover painting by Wiley Wallace. Master by Al Carlson; Cut at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. Edition of 500.

SUTCLIFFE NO MORE Diving Board CD
"Sutcliffe No More is the follow-up name for the band known as Sutcliffe Jugend. It was founded by Kevin Tomkins in 1982. It started as a power electronics act, quickly gaining a name for itself, before branching out stylistically, creating a distinctive style that drew influence from all manner of genres while keeping true to their roots as a noise act. In its original form Sutcliffe Jugend existed for less than a year before Tomkins stopped the project to join Whitehouse. He reformed the group in 1994 with Paul Taylor who also played on some of the project's early material. The project ended in 2019. They released one album under a new name, Slaves No More, then continued as Sutcliffe No More. While obviously the band's roots lie in noise music and power electronics, and the influence of Whitehouse can still be heard, Sutcliffe No More are now focusing on a more diverse musical approach to accompany Kevin Tomkins' lyrics. Recently, they started to introduce distorted rhythms into their music as well. Diving Board is the all-new album and according to Kevin Tomkins it's their most fucked up yet. You know that means something."

ZANETTI, WALTER Cantos Yoruba de Cuba LP
LP version. Includes download code and an essay by E.R. Pulgar, a Venezuelan-American journalist, editor, poet, and translator interested in Latinx and alternative culture. Basing himself off the works of Cuban guitarist-composers Jos? Angel Navarro and Hector Angulo, Italian guitarist Walter Zanetti intimately recreates sacred Afro-Cuban bat? drum songs on guitar. Santer?a draws heavily on music for its ceremonies. This Afro-Cuban syncretic religion, sometimes called La Regla de Ocha, saw the Orisha deities of the West African Yoruba peoples codified with Catholic saints. Yoruba practitioners, brought by force to the West, continued to worship their gods under the nose of those who sought to dehumanize them by adopting their spiritual language. The chants that became Santer?a's prayers were often accompanied by the beat of the bat? drum. This heartbeat runs through every invocation, through every sacred song. In the same way that the shuffling chains on the feet of enslaved African peoples dancing defiantly in Colombia birthed the distinctive rhythm of cumbia, syncretism has been present in music as much as it has in religion. It has always been about challenging the odds, about creation, creativity, and heart. This is why Italian musician Walter Zanetti's guitar pierces straight to the soul on his Cantos Yoruba de Cuba. This album of new recordings from Zanetti brings together six original compositions by Navarro dictated to the Italian guitarist on a month-long trip to Cuba and reinterpretations of Angulo's nine original Cantos Yoruba de Cuba, which give the record its name.

VELOSO, CAETANO Caetano Veloso (A Little More Blue) (Color Vinyl) LP
2025 restock. Lilith present a reissue of Caetano Veloso's Caetano Veloso (A Little More Blue), originally issued in 1971. Often referred to as "Brazil's unofficial poet laureate" and the "Bob Dylan of Brazil", this heavyweight of Brazilian music was also a young revolutionary who used his music to protest against Brazil's oppressive military regime. This protest music, which became known as tropicalia, first earned Veloso a stint in jail, but by the time this dour album was released in 1971, it had placed him in exile in the UK. Veloso's extreme bitterness and melancholy can be heard on every groove of this album, but don't let the album's gloomy atmosphere stop you from buying it; it is dripping with some of the best moments of saudade in the history of Brazilian music. Color vinyl.

GOLDMANN, STEFAN Live At Borusan M?zik Evi, Istanbul CD
Live at Borusan follows in the tradition of Stefan Goldmann's recordings of concerts at the Philharmonie Berlin and the Honen-in Temple in Kyoto, with a music program that is just as tailored to the location and its characteristics as his other site-specific formats, such as for the LACMA in Los Angeles or the CCK of Buenos Aires. The Borusan Music House is located in the densely built-up Pera district, the old Christian quarter of Istanbul. It is a 19th century brownstone that has been carefully converted into a minimalist, multistorey exhibition and concert venue. While Goldmann was a fellow at the Tarabya Cultural Academy for an extended summer in 2023, the idea for this concert was born and scheduled to be part of the Noise Istanbul festival organized by Borusan in November 2024. The palimpsest-like character of the city with its multiple cultural layers is reflected in the structure of this concert and expressed in the language of electroacoustic composition. Accordingly, what should be a collision-ridden, restlessly advancing sequence through a multitude of references to earlier works and projects such as Veiki, Alluvium, Sfera, and Furnace, instead leads listeners on a surprisingly relatable sonic arc.

HELD, ZEUS B. Zeus' Amusement CD
"For more than two years, Zeus B. Held has been the keyboardist for the German kraut rock institution Guru Guru. However, his long-standing international career as a musician, producer, songwriter and arranger began in 1972 with his kraut rock colleagues from Birth Control. Six years and six BC albums later, after the release of his solo album Zeus' Amusement, he parted ways with the band. He explored new and interesting possibilities for himself with the use of a vocoder, especially in vocal phrasing. Together with drummer Manni von Bohr (Br?selmaschine), bassist Horst Stachelhaus (Birth Control, Message) and Helmut Fichtner from the D?sseldorf band Message as another keyboarder, he also brought the concept of Zeus' Amusement to the stage. The album itself was released in 1978 on Brain; the cover design by Berlin underground artist Gil Funccius caused a sensation and sold very well, but unfortunately it was somewhat forgotten over time. This was also due to the fact that Zeus concentrated more on writing, producing and arranging and provided the right sound for artists like Nina Hagen, Dead Or Alive, Men Without Hats, and especially Gina X Performance. After almost 47 years, Zeus' Amusement is now available on CD and digitally for the first time. As a bonus, there are four new arrangements and remixes by Zeus."

MOORE, BARBARA Meet Barbara Moore 2CD
"Barbara Moore was a British singer, composer, and arranger, best known for her work in the 1960s and 1970s, especially in jazz, pop, and easy-listening music. She gained recognition as a session vocalist and arranger, working with artists and bands such as Jimi Hendrix and Dudley Moore. Barbara was a prominent figure in the UK's music industry during the height of the 'library music' era, where composers created music for television, film, and radio. One of her most notable works was her arrangement and vocal work for the Vocal Shades and Tones album, which became iconic in the world of library music. Her compositions, like 'Hot Heels' and 'Steam Heat,' are renowned for their catchy, funky, and soulful elements, often featuring groovy bass lines, smooth vocals, and jazzy arrangements. Barbara Moore's work continues to be appreciated by fans of vintage and retro music, and her compositions have appeared in various films, television shows, and commercials, adding to her legacy as a significant contributor to the UK's music scene. Morgan Blue Town present these four original albums on a 2CD set. Includes comprehensive sleeve notes."

LAWRENCE Until Then, Goodbye 2LP
2025 restock. The highly anticipated album from Lawrence is finally here, and 15 years after the CD release for the first time available on vinyl. Hamburg based Dial and Smallville owner Peter Kersten aka Lawrence is one of the most valued and highly regarded artists in the modern dance music community with a long history of releases on Nova Mute, Kompakt, Ladomat, Spectral, Ghostly, Mule and of course his own imprint Dial. Until Then, Goodbye kicks off with a special "intro" version of a fan favorite "Friday's Child" followed by the introspective ambient piece "Sunrise." "Grey Light" remarks the electronic style of "Drutti Column" while "Jill" is purely sweet slow house music. The album shifts towards more acoustic driven material with songs such as "Father Umbrillo" and "Toderhau-Sen Blues" -- don't fret purists as Lawrence hits back with his classic signature sounds with the likes of "In Your Eyes," "Sleep," and "Suffer." Lawrence leaves listeners with a whisper in the most beautiful of ways. The atmospheric ambient tune "Don't Follow Me," the ebb and flow of the piano driven "A New Day" and the title track leave the listener in a state of bliss.

MERCENARIAS BAU 83-87 LP
Mercen?rias is an iconic band in the history of Brazilian punk and post-punk. They gained global recognition after being included in several compilations outside Brazil. Recommended for fans of The Slits, DNA, Malaria!, Kleenex, and Minutemen, the group stood out for their rebellious attitude, incisive lyrics, and raw sound that blended punk, post-punk, no wave and experimental elements. This is a compilation of rare tracks from 1983 to 1987, including ten amazing songs that didn't make it onto their two albums; there's also a great early live recording, as well as a "lost" studio session. It has been remastered from the original tapes and includes an insert with previously unseen photos and a short text by Edgard Scandurra. This is a collaboration release with the Brazilian label Nada Nada Discos. Born in the vibrant alternative scene of 1980s S?o Paulo, Mercen?rias is an iconic band in the history of Brazilian punk and post-punk. LOS TEXAO El Sonido Niebla De Los Texao LP
Discover the groundbreaking sound of Los Texao, a legendary Peruvian rock band that helped shape the music scene in the 1970s. Their music fused the energy of psychedelic rock with Latin American influences, captivating audiences across their native Peru. Los Texao's psychedelic phase was marked by experimentation with new sounds and instruments. This release comprises their complete recordings, including all their singles and also covers of some of the most influential rock bands of the era, most of them previously unavailable on vinyl. Born in the culturally rich city of Arequipa, Los Texao's journey to stardom was paved with innovation, passion, and an undeniable connection to their roots. Formed in 1969, the band took their name from Arequipa's emblematic flower, the nasturtium, and made an immediate impact with their debut at a local band contest. Soon after, they recorded their first 45 RPM single, which included covers of tracks by Chilean group Los Beat 4. But it was in the early '70s when Los Texao truly found their voice. With a dynamic lineup, including the talented Fernando "Fe?o" Humbser and Juan N??ez on guitar, V?ctor Dib?n on vocals and bass, and Edgar "Chito" Manrique on drums, their musical evolution began to take shape. The addition of Julio Torres, a keyboardist and guitarist from the iconic bands Los Beatniks and Los Dig It, further elevated their sound. Los Texao's psychedelic phase was marked by experimentation with new sounds and instruments. They embraced the emerging trend of playing rock in English, despite the language barrier, and incorporated cutting-edge gear. With the help of the legendary Peruvian jazz musician Jaime Delgado Aparicio, they created hypnotic tracks like "Alg?n d?a" and "Nunca cambias," capturing the essence of '70s rock with swirling textures and atmospheric vibes. Los Texao quickly became a sensation in Peru, performing in cities like Puno, Moquegua, and Arica (Chile), and sharing stages with iconic bands like Los Shain's, Traffic Sound, and Telegraph Avenue. The band's wild live shows became the stuff of legend, with fans packing into intimate venues to experience the raw energy of their loud, unapologetic rock. In addition to their 45s, Los Texao also recorded covers of some of the most influential rock bands of the era, including Cream, Steppenwolf, and The Guess Who, showcasing their versatility and love for classic rock. Unfortunately, this session remained lost for years and some of these covers have never been available on vinyl before.

MERCENARIAS Demo 1983 7"
Mercen?rias is an iconic band in the history of Brazilian punk and post-punk. They gained global recognition after being included in several compilations outside Brazil. Recommended for fans of The Slits, DNA, Malaria!, Kleenex, and Minutemen, this early recording by Mercen?rias is more punk than their albums, but still super catchy. It has been remastered from the original tape and includes an insert with previously unseen photos and a short text by Edgard Scandurra. This is a collaboration release with the Brazilian label Nada Nada Discos. Born in the vibrant alternative scene of 1980s S?o Paulo, Mercen?rias is an iconic band in the history of Brazilian punk and post-punk. SHINO, AYANE River: The Timbre Of Guitar #2 - Rei Harakami LP
River: The Timbre of Guitar #2 - Rei Harakami signals a new level of awareness and understanding of both Rei Harakami's significance and Ayane Shino's undeniable talent. In 1996 Tokyo-based label Sublime Records received a cassette demo from Rei Harakami, a 26-year-old Japanese experimental filmmaker, and musician. Within one year, Harakami's debut LP Unrest was released. As the 21st century dawned, Harakami was becoming a critically acclaimed figure, and there was a feeling in Japan that Harakami would be an inevitable successor to such luminaries as Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Sadly Harakami passed away at age 40 in 2011, leaving behind a musical legacy that seemed to deserve more recognition. A fitting tribute now comes from the incredibly gifted classical guitarist Ayane Shino. Continuing her album series The Timbre of Guitar, she now presents River: The Timbre of Guitar #2 - Rei Harakami. Ayane has reworked some of Harakami's standout tracks into an album of tranquil yet complex compositions helping to build a new level of awareness and understanding of Rei Harakami's significance. A collection of ten hypnotic guitar renditions that dive deeply into the traditional compositional musicality that underpins Harakami's hallucinatory beatscapes before reconsidering them under a fresh, innovative and engaging new light. During her time completing a masters at Tokyo's University of the Arts, Shino became fascinated by Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Oneohtrix Point Never, Steve Reich, and, closer to home, Harakami and Susumu Yokota. On her approach to the album, Ayane explains: "For this album, I succeeded in spinning some exquisite, silk thread like delicate tones, interwoven with human warmth, gentleness and simplicity. And I was also able to rework Rei Harakami's distinctive sound with a floating feel to it and transform it into a very classical guitar sound. I hope many people will be able to receive this group of sounds that I created in this album that I played with all my heart."

MARTHIAL NECH029 12"
Marthial joins NECHTO with NECH029, a four-track vinyl release blending tradition and futurism. The record pays homage to a genre central to Marthial's imagination, drawing on its history to shape a forward-thinking sonic vision. The Milan-born and -based artist describes the EP as "a reflection on change: everything transforms, everything evolves, and we are tasked with finding harmony between what has been and what could be." Born Alessandro Vaccari, Marthial is a DJ, producer, and founder of Milan's independent cultural hub, the Tempio del Futuro Perduto. Through this unique space and his 24/H Records label, Marthial has collaborated with influential artists like Stanislav Tolkachev and Fabrizio Rat. His music evokes ethereal atmospheres and hypnotic rhythms, bridging Detroit-inspired soundscapes with innovative, interstellar journeys. The EP represents a personal journey for Marthial, who describes the process of revisiting this sonic language as an opportunity to redefine himself and his perspective on the world. By channeling the past as a guide and embracing the future as a responsibility, he crafts a cohesive narrative that combines deep emotional resonance with forward-thinking energy. NECH029 is a cohesive exploration of these elements, delivering pulsating energy and emotional depth across its four tracks: "Don't Wanna," "Soul Groove," "The Dancer Gift," and "Infinito Imperfetto."

ROOS, JAIME Mediocampo LP
Mediocampo (1984), Jaime Roos's fifth album concludes an unintentional trilogy that began with Aquello (1981) and continued with Siempre son las cuatro (1982). It is the bright side of the series, a groundbreaking album that has become a classic, perhaps the most prestigious and well-known work of his discography. Mediocampo is as daring and experimental as his previous two works, but with much more direct and accessible communication, achieving an almost perfect distillation of his artistic vision. Today, many of its songs are an essential part of Montevideo's cultural soundtrack. The album's sound, aligned with international trends of the 1980s, made Mediocampo the gateway to Jaime Roos's universe for a younger audience approaching music through rock. Its proposal was unique and deeply Uruguayan, yet it incorporated elements that resonated with a public accustomed to Anglo-Saxon pop. The albums Aquello and Siempre son las cuatro, despite being very different works, share a focus on the Beatles-inspired pop song structure, stylistic diversity, and a search for popular roots.

MATEO & FERNANDO CABRERA, EDUARDO Mateo y Cabrera. Grabado en vivo - Teatro del Notariado - Montevideo, 11 de abril 1987 LP
Eduardo Mateo and Fernando Cabrera come together to offer a cycle of live music, where both authors interpret their creations in a special way. They achieve remakes of songs that from this encounter become anthems of Uruguayan music such as "Por ejemplo," an essential piece of Uruguayan music of all times. Recorded live and released in 1987 in Montevideo, Uruguay, this album is the most professional record of the duo that Eduardo Mateo and Fernando Cabrera formed for a period of a few months. These two great composers, performers and arrangers from different generations, premiered with the duo several beautiful new songs, in addition to concocting together renewed versions of some of the classic tunes from each one's repertoire. It is an intimate and acoustic work. Fernando Cabrera's guitar appears many times backed by the tasty and peculiar percussion of Eduardo Mateo, and there are also grooves with precious arrangements of two guitars. The duo of Mateo and Cabrera was a milestone for the careers of both.

XYZ XYZ Plays The Classics LP
Incredible "concept" album from the transatlantic duo made of Ian Svenonius (The Make Up, Escape-ism, Chain & the Gang, etc.) and Memphis Electronic (Dum Dum Boys, NON!) who took the beloved but tired tunes of the classic rock canon and resuscitated them by pumping new blood into worn-out veins, revitalizing them with new themes, new lyrics, and new riffs to make them brand new again, merging the old with the new, completing the circle of life! A truly cosmic record! The Ancient Greeks and Romans sure had that "classic" touch. Before their empires crumbled into ruin, they set the standard with their classical forms, in art, buildings, and philosophy. They've set the pace ever since with pretenders and imitators making "classical music," "neo-classical architecture," and of course "classic rock." Once something is a classic, it's untouchable. No one would dare attempt to improve it. That would be sacrilege! After all, who could do better than Ovid, Homer, & Virgil? Or the classic tunes of Rolling Stones, the Stooges, et al? They're the gold standard of perfection; no one would dare try to improve upon them -- until XYZ that is! That's right, XYZ -- those little-known legends -- have achieved the impossible; they've taken the classics and made them even better! More relevant, more updated, more "now," more wow! They improved the classics using all the latest sensibilities, technologies and innovations. On XYZ Plays The Classics, the XYZ band -- the twosome that sang "Bubble Gum" -- take the beloved but tired tunes of the classic rock canon -- The Rolling Stones, VU, Neu!, The Seeds, Stooges, and the other Hall of Famers -- and resuscitates them, pumping new blood into worn-out veins, revitalize them with new themes, new lyrics, and new riffs to make them new again! This is the record that merges the old with the new, that completes the circle of life; it's the cosmic record that everyone needs right now!

BRAINWAVE RESEARCH CENTER Psychic Antenna 12"
R.i.O. welcomes Brainwave Research Center, a NYC-based duo consisting of house/techno producer Chase Smith and documentary filmmaker Christa Majoras. In early 2023 they freed their debut album Figure 1 via their own label BRC. Two more albums followed. All documenting their love for experimental yet charming music of all kinds. Their influences span a vast spectrum, from Steve Reich, Laurie Spiegel, and Edgar Froese to Martin Rev, John Carpenter, early Kraftwerk, or the ambient techno of Pete Namlook's label. Yet, Brainwave Research Center forges a sound distinctly their own, seamlessly blending analog synthesis with electro-acoustic experimentation. On Psychic Antenna, the duo takes a gentle rawer approach. The tracks range from the manic verbal Die-T?dliche-Doris-like loops of "I Find Myself" to the meditative cosmic trance of "Open Your Mouth." "Orange Drop" and "Transmitter Park" toy with the dancefloor, channeling slow-motion acid trance and krautrock echoes. The release is rounded out by three remixes: R.i.O.'s own Benedikt Frey delivers a deep, trippy groover full of inner musicality, while close companion DALO crafts a dark, echo-drenched pop rework, and Berlin's Nathan Dawidowicz injects psyched nu-disco rhythms, expanding Psychic Antenna into seven notions of intense neural oscillations.

RIVERS, SAM The Quest LP
Originally released in 2023. "'When everything was ready the trio played four tracks in a row, all in one breath' recalls Veschi. There was no need to record many takes for each piece. Everything went for the best. The trio played for pieces that Rivers baptized with the evocative titles of 'Expectation,' 'Vision,' 'Judgement,' and 'Hope.' There is no doubt The Quest was an album of an absolute vanguard, reflecting the experimentations and the freedom of expression that was swarming among the lofts of New York. It was alive and vital music, spontaneous and sincere, violently hitting the listener and not leaving him or her indifferent."

Originally released in 2023. "The three recordings The Trio volumes 1/2/3, offer a now-tested repertoire in principle (carefully selected standards, extremely interesting originals, intense Monk revisitations and a thoughtful Bossanovian digression. And at the same time they give full credit to a group that in a field so beaten but also so peculiar as that of the trio, which always has to reckon with great models-it really seems to have no rivals at present. Most striking is its expressive balance, propitiated as best it could be by a with his astonishing technique, moderately driven and exquisitely multifaceted pianism, always original in every harmonic, melodic and rhythmic detail; plus a percussion (Higgins) now risen to a veritable model of drumming for reduced formations; plus a bass contribution (Williams) clean, essential, fluid."

WALTON TRIO, CEDAR The Trio 3 LP
Originally released in 2022. "Cedar Walton defined hard bop as much as it defined him, and throughout his life remained one of its foremost ambassadors. He was also one of jazz's finest composers, and even by the 1970s had contributed several compositions that were considered jazz standards including Bolivia, Mosaic, Clockwise, Firm Roots, Ugetsu, Ojos de Rojo and Mode for Joe. This album, The Trio 3, comes from the third trio session. By the time of this recording the group had been playing together since 1983 and were able to bring to the table the kind of learned and intuitive responses to each other's playing that contributed to the kind of mutual empathy that went a long way in helping produce the superior jazz performances we hear on this recording -- the graceful invention of drummer Billy Higgins supporting and framing Walton's playing and the powerful, swinging pulse of bassist David "Happy" Williams."

ISOLEE Chopstick! 12"
Isol?e is best known for his early work, the now '90s classic "beau mot plage" (1998), included on his first album Rest (2000). Allowance (2013) on DJ Koze's Pampa Label, Pisco (2016) on Mano le Tough's label Maeve, and the launch of his own label Resort Island with his fourth album Resort Island in 2023 are the highlights to date. "Love Algorithm," the first single title, pulls listeners into the rabbit hole of social media. In this deep house track Isol?e embraces the unpredictable. The slacker who takes things at his own pace. He leisurely lets some vocal debris wail through the track, and fans might recognize a Kerri Chandler vibe in the background textures, maybe more obvious in the stripped-down B-side "3rd Places Dub" version. "OMG So Random" seems old-scool, not boosting the tempo. Though not being "fast," this track is pushing and powerful. Its classy dub sounds and textures put up against some scratchy, seemingly exotic, flute-like instruments make this track less obvious to categories than it might seem at first. It marries the reflection of a contemplative tune with the quality to be a dance track. On "Chopstick!," the third and final single, the bass line dominates, too. Isol?e rediscovered one of his analog '80s Roland synthesizers, the MKS30, which creates that distinctive thudding sound. This track picks up the pace the most.

LOPEZ, RAMON 40 Springs In Paris CD
"The evocation of a heartbeat greets listeners at the threshold of this succession of pieces that take on the role of a sum, a balance sheet (admittedly still provisional) of the artistic experience of the forty years since the day musician Ramon Lopez decided to leave his native Alicante to join one of Europe's active jazz centers: Paris. This emigration, experienced as an adventure without too many safeguards, gradually found its justification as Ramon has integrated Parisian jazz. Well, Ramon has carved out his own path. The 1985 Spanish emigrant, initially acclimatized to the Parisian scene, has built up a European network, associated with the likes of double bassist Barry Guy and pianist/keyboardist Joachim K?hn. In addition to the rhythmic reliability and flexibility expected of an excellent 'jazz drummer,' a dose of fantasy added an unexpected dimension. A poetic irrationality coiled in a functional gesture. The remarkable surprise of Ramon's playing is that he's equally at home 'spinning' a rhythmic pattern in a 'mainstream' modern jazz idiom (although it's not clear whether he's a disciple of Philly Joe, Elvin or Roy), and frolicking in the most open contexts of European improvised music. His abundant discography bears witness to all this. While it may seem like a leap into the void in a musical practice where collective interaction is the golden rule, the solo gesture may also be the expression of a synthesis of artistic experiences that follow and respond to each other like so many achievements. A whole vibrant world, inhabited by sounds that are familiar and then strange, cadences that seem to settle in and then dissolve, drawing us into shifting colors, traveling from brushing skins to scathing metallic strikes. These pieces, created in the moment but with an eye to a journey open to all winds, unfold in an open space of freedom, rich in shared experience and always on the way to a welcome adventure."

BASIC BLACK Don't Make Me Fall In Love (Timmy Regisford Mixes) 12"
Timmy Regisford's remix of Basic Black's "Don't Make Me Fall In Love." Signed to Motown during Regisford's reign as vice president and A&R, their self-titled debut album from 1990 is a testament to the massive popularity of new jack swing at the time. In his remix, the co-founder, resident DJ, and key figure of Club Shelter reconfigures the song's structure with the signature sounds of New York's prime dance floor scene, while preserving the heartfelt storytelling of the lyrics and the group's voices on top of an irresistible groove and a bassline to die for. At the time, it was only available in the record crates of the Big Apple's DJ elite and later on as a white label in specialist shops. This soulful, yet driving piece, however, never saw an official single release -- until now. Lifted from a DAT tape in Tony Humphries' archive and carefully and faithfully restored, it now even features a condensed, never-before-released instrumental version of the remix, as well as a bass-and-beats-only edit for mixing purposes. New jack swing transformed into New York club music by a king. This remix is a testament to Timmy Regisford's prowess in the studio, but also honors the roots of the music he loves and grew up on -- serving as a perpetual piece of the city's vast history in underground dance music.

In his liner notes, Spacemen 3's Sonic Boom says this release presents the album's songs in their "full guitar-laden versions with all the layers of beautifully streamlined guitar, considered by us to be too hard to replicate live and therefore reduced for the original release. For me, this is where Spacemen 3's songwriting came to a head; many of these songs pre-dated Sound Of Confusion (1986), some were even recorded at both sessions, but I am still impressed mightily by Jason Pierce's lyrical genius on originals like "Walking With Jesus" and re-writes like "Come Down Easy" and his fluid guitar playing across the whole sessions."

MOLES, THE Composition Book CD
"Australian mad scientist Richard Davies has long flown under the popular radar with his groups The Moles and Cardinal, but his ten albums are loved and championed by indie rock royalty. The Flaming Lips, for example, have recorded a Davies song and backed him up on a Moles tour in 1995. A scholar of the songwriting of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Dylan et al., Davies spins off subtle, catchy indie rock melodies, sometimes reassembled in bizarre Frankenstein arrangements and deconstructed sonic derangements. On Composition Book, The Moles have evolved with emphasis on acoustic guitar and divine female voices. Davies' lyrical non sequiturs and caustic wit sting, surprise and delight."The Australian-bred, New England-based Richard Davies has long been a secret-handshake artist for indie diehards; his songs suggest self-contained pop hits from a crooked dimension." --The New Yorker"The greatest differentiator between the work of the Moles and that of their contemporaries, though, is Davies himself. As a presence, there is something deeply and beguilingly inscrutable about him, a purposeful blankness that betrays an enormous amount of weight and depth behind it, and oozes both vulnerability and vitriol when it breaks and cracks." --Pitchfork

ROOMER Leaving It All To Chance LP
With Leaving It All to Chance, Roomer don't quite leave everything up to fate. The Berlin outfit's debut album hums with guitar-driven heartbreak, pairing mind-splitting noise with seductive melodies. Capturing the gritty yet emotive energy of their live performances, the album welcomes in the occasional ear-candy, staying true to the raw physicality of a hazy club show all while sharpening its edges -- crafted in true DIY spirit and released by Munich's Squama Recordings. Roomer is the meeting point of four distinct creative forces in the European music scene, united through long-standing friendships and years of collaboration across projects ranging from avant-garde free improv to ethereal folk and ambient electronica. Inevitably -- if surprisingly late -- the question arose: why not start a band? In their hands, the rock band format became a canvas for their many musical worlds to collide.

CACCIAPAGLIA, ROBERTO Sonanze LP
"Roberto Cacciapaglia is an Italian composer and pianist who started out in the fertile Milan avant-garde scene of the 1970s, which included Franco Battiato, Giusto Pio, Lino Capra Vaccina, Francesco Messina, and many others. After studying at the conservatory, he worked at RAI's Studio of Musical Phonology -- an electronic music laboratory similar to NDR/WDR in Germany, GRM/IRCAM in France or BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Sonanze ('Sonatas') is Cacciapaglia's debut album, a monumental work that was recorded over a two-year period and released in 1975 via seminal German label Die Kosmischen Kuriere (Ohr). While a 'sonata' is traditionally performed by easily distinguishable instrumentalists (often soloist and accompaniment) and with repeated structural themes, Cacciapaglia flips this hierarchical form on its head -- blending harpsichord, strings, brass and analog synths to create ambient mini-soundtracks. As the composer writes in the original sleeve notes, 'I am aware, unfortunately, that I am a few millennia late in how I would like music to be understood, which today I find diluted in its primary powers, in an era that is destructive of essential values. Precisely for this reason, I want to search for it in depth and not on the surface, perhaps alternating the knob of a synthesizer with a marranzano (mouth harp).' Mixed in quadrophonic surround-sound under the auspices of Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser (celebrated producer of Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel), Sonanze remains on the fringe of Kosmische realms. Each movement explores hypnotic rhythms, intuitive arrangements, musique concr?te techniques and a pure psychedelic awakening."

CACCIAPAGLIA, ROBERTO Sei Note In Logica LP
"Roberto Cacciapaglia is an Italian composer and pianist who started out in the fertile Milan avant-garde scene of the 1970s, which included Franco Battiato, Giusto Pio, Lino Capra Vaccina, Francesco Messina, and many others. After studying at the conservatory, he worked at RAI's Studio of Musical Phonology -- an electronic music laboratory similar to NDR/WDR in Germany, GRM/IRCAM in France or BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Originally released in 1979, Sei Note In Logica ('Six Notes In Logic') is Cacciapaglia's second album. While his debut, Sonanze, offers a series of ambient mini-soundtracks, Sei Note presents a singular, sinuous piece. The composition is based on a finite set of musical notes, yet this limitation is the point of departure for a grand tour of possible combinations and enthralling timbres (marimbas, strings, reeds and human voice). Like Steve Reich's Music For 18 Musicians, the joyous experiment of Sei Note is grounded in constant variation. Often doubled by multiple instruments, non-repeating patterns are exquisitely layered, while electro-acoustic signals transform and further refract through visceral effects. Within this conceptual framework, Cacciapaglia does not so much juxtapose rigid dichotomies -- acoustic vs. electronic, melodic vs. dissonant, simple vs. complex -- as fuse them into an expansive whole. What started as an inspired study in minimalism becomes a bold feat of 20th century music. Sei Note In Logica is deeply sincere and, at the same time, quite playful. With one foot firmly planted in the past and the other steeped in technology, Cacciapaglia's influence can be heard in the work of Jim O'Rourke, Fennesz, and Ben Vida."

SONIC YOUTH Hold That Tiger CD
"In October 1987, four months after the release of their critically acclaimed Sister LP, Sonic Youth showcased their latest work in a blistering set at Cabaret Metro, Chicago. The concert was introduced by Big Black's Steve Albini (who at the time was banned from the venue) and subsequently released as a semi-official bootleg under the title Hold That Tiger on writer/provocateur Byron Coley's impishly Geffen-baiting label Goofin' (years later the band would use this nom de guerre for their own imprint). Hold That Tiger's sterling reputation among the Sonic Youth faithful is well deserved. In fact, it isn't a stretch to suggest that the album is to the first handful of SY releases what It's Alive is to the first three Ramones LPs -- a feral and liberatory public snapshot of a band's blossoming imperial phase. Indeed, HTT is the sound of a group at the peak of their powers, presenting new songs alongside a handful of older ones with the kind of wild, cathartic enthusiasm common to rock 'n' roll's most revered live albums. Taking nothing away from Sister -- inarguably one of indie rock's first true masterpieces -- it is reasonable that many fans prefer the live versions heard on Hold That Tiger to their studio counterparts. On HTT, Sonic Youth is a spiky, pummeling and confident force, alternately mammoth and meditative. Sister and its predecessor EVOL notably added an airy, dreamlike reverie to the band's turbulent doom-lurch, a stylistic evolution that seems to crystallize on HTT. Throughout, Kim Gordon's sinewy, sumptuous bass and Steve Shelley's propulsive, tom-heavy percussion provide the bedrock groove for Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo's ferocious barrages of noise-guitar crunch. By 1987, the band was confidently articulating their dual lexicon of punk-noir dissonance and supernal, psychedelic sonic calligraphy -- bending their jagged, streetwise gnarl into balloon animals of dazzling and beautiful songs. This collision of splendor and chaos would become a hallmark of the group's singular alchemy as well as provide a blueprint for the post-SST American underground they would help invent and ultimately nurture. Hold That Tiger's encore -- four songs by the band's beloved Ramones, which Thurston would later astutely compare to 'the perfect pudding after a hearty meal' -- serves as a reminder that, like any true punks, Sonic Youth never could resist a good, rousing anthem to send the kids home with their ears ringing, their hearts hot-wired. This first-time reissue comes with gatefold jacket. Mastered by Bob Weston from the original tapes. Recorded by Aadam Jacobs. Audio repair/editing by Aaron Mullan."

PHILIPPE & THE NIGHT MAIL, LOUIS The Road To The Sea CD
Louis Philippe and The Night Mail return with a new captivating record where the songs are once again faultless. Carrying on the journey away from the classic towards the unexpected with new synths and hand claps adding a sense of the abrupt and, with voices calling from the wings, a sense of play and a lack of fear. Philippe Auclair aka Louis Philippe, Anglo-French singer-songwriter extraordinaire, has been an admired fixture for the past four decades, from his beginnings as protagonist and house producer at Mike Alway's fabled ?l Records label through his forays into the Shibuya sound and collaborations with the likes of Bertrand Burgalat, XTC's Dave Gregory, High Llamas' Sean O'Hagan and Young Marble Giants' Stuart Moxham right up to his more recent adventures with The Night Mail -- a loose ensemble around bassist/sometime acid jazz artist/encyclopedian of sound Andy Lewis, ex-Death in Vegas guitarist/head of heads at Papernut Cambridge/legacy indie's favorite live and session drummer Ian Button and guitarist/Viennese pop ambassador to Canterbury Robert Rotifer. When Louis Philippe & The Night Mail met again at Rimshot Studio in rural Kent in the spring of 2023 to tackle album number two, the same extended line-up was assembled. Work on The Road to the Sea began with just four days' intense recording under Rimshot's oakwood eaves followed by extensive extra sessions in Andy Lewis' hideaway studio somewhere up in deepest Bassetlaw. As the core duo of obsessives, Lewis/Philippe immersed themselves in the material, adding voices, instruments and effects, interrupted only once by Robert Rotifer visiting to throw in a few more touches of Telecaster. Their mission was to fully realize the sonic and harmonic potential of songs as varied as the partly portentous, partly (deceptively) jaunty opener "The Road to Somewhere", the catchy, XTC-flavoured "Pictures of Anna", the breezy-yet-apocalyptic space age groove of "Where Did We Go Wrong" or the piano-led Francophone waltz of "Une maison sans toit". It all adds up to a colorful mix of delicate textures, subtly sculpted reverb, melodic mellotron madness, Wilsonesque layered vocal harmonies, and the sort of long lost, very English whimsy it would take an anglophile Frenchman to evoke. And yet, in its transparent spaciousness dotted with charming detail, The Road To The Sea also brings to mind the sound of Summer Dancing, Andy Lewis' acclaimed 2017 collaboration with the late, great Judy Dyble.

BLACK LIGHT SMOKE Control 12"
For months, Black Light Smoke's Control EP has supplied several of label head Tiga's secret DJ weapons. In fact, he's been sneaking out constantly after 9pm to play it out anywhere they'll have him. And it's little wonder to those who wonder why, as the Chicago-born producer's top-flight mix of EBM, electro and Benadryl-soaked vocals has all the right people dancing. Leadoff track "New York Is Dead" eulogizes the famous Big Apple Dance Party Scene in a way that will confuse the many who have embraced the city's thriving "Groove With the Avengers" day rave series in Times Square. But the nihilism-liking doesn't stop there, with the Friday-Til-I-Die attitude of "Black Hole at the Disco," the pleather-dreaded post-cyberpunk of "Last Song Before Sunrise," and the oxygen-deprived acid of "Break Your Back" culminating in the 11:45am-peak-time industrial trance of closer "Mind Control."

NURSE WITH WOUND Salt Marie Celeste - Salt 2CD
2025 repress. A welcome re-release, as an expanded version, of one of Nurse With Wound's most notable albums. Originally recorded in 2002 by Steven Stapleton and Colin Potter, the piece "Salt" was a limited-edition release to accompany an exhibition of Stapleton's artwork at The Horse Hospital in London. The following year Salt Marie Celeste was released as a single 61-minute-long piece of droning atmospheric sound that manages to be both minimal and maximal at the same time. A parade of strange, often unlikely, sounds appear and disappear during the voyage from Z to A. Described by many as being one of the most unsettling and/or engaging NWW recordings, it went on to feature in many "albums of the year" lists of 2003. This new edition comes in a six-panel digipack with stunning all-new artwork by Babs Santini.

GUAGENTI, MIKE Salsa Con Charanga LP
Salsa con charanga is really a feast for all salsa music lovers, a true jewel, which deserved much better when it originally came out in 1978. It comprises eight great, solid tracks; some, new interpretations from other albums in which Mike Guagenti participated with his handsome and captivating voice -- a crooner with a salsero soul -- that, at times, could remind listeners of the late Tito Rodr?guez, and even Ray Ramos. It has developed a cult following, and finding a copy of the original could be quite expensive. Luckily, this officially licensed and restored edition will fill that void. In addition to being a great salsa album, has the distinction that was released on Orfeon, a Mexican record label, due to the diligent work of the extraordinary producer Bobby Marin, and which miraculously received air play when powerhouse Fania label and few others ruled radio in the salsa music world. "The Mike Guagenti album," as indicated by Marin, "is a compilation of recordings by other artists. Originally a salsa album, I brought in [Cuban] Pupi Legarreta (violin and flute) and [Panamanian] Mauricio Smith (flute) to give it a charanga sound." With the exception of the cut "Salsa con charanga," which is an instrumental, the rest feature vocals by Guagenti. Salsa con charanga has developed a cult following, and finding a copy of the original could be quite expensive. Luckily, this officially licensed and restored edition will fill that void.

LOS GAVILANES DE LA COSTA Dame Cafe LP
Dame Caf?, originally released on Discos Fuentes in 1965 to meet the tropical music demand of the time, features a mix of traditional rhythms like vallenato and cumbia, alongside more experimental beats. Los Gavilanes de la Costa, the band behind this album, had a brief existence but left a lasting impact, especially in Mexico's sonidero scene. Over the years, pirate editions and elusive original copies have made it a highly sought-after collector's item. The album's lively sound, combining accordion melodies, deep bass, and vibrant guacharaca rhythms, continues to resonate in the tropical music scene. The vibrant musical scene of the 1960s in Colombia owes much to a group of versatile accordionists who blended genres such as cumbia, charanga, guaracha, vallenato, and Cuban-influenced rhythms. This group included notable figures like Andr?s Landero, An?bal Vel?squez, Lisandro Meza, and Alfredo Guti?rrez, among others. A prime example of their diverse musical styles is the album Dame Caf?, released in November 1965, which features a mix of traditional rhythms like vallenato and cumbia, alongside more experimental beats such as pasea?to and pasaje. The album includes six previously released singles composed by Jos? Castro, Policarpo Calle, and others. The album highlights the commercial strategy of Discos Fuentes, which often created short-lived studio bands to meet the tropical music demand of the time. The group's creation was driven by the high demand for tropical music in the 1960s, with many musicians adjusting to market trends. Most of the members, including composers Campillo and Castro, vanished from the scene, while others, like Calle and Zambrano, went on to have notable careers in music. Calle, in particular, became a cumbia legend, later settling in Mexico City. The album features a remarkable contribution from Colombian jazz legend Justo Almario, who, at just 16 years old, played tenor sax on the track "Pues no da pa' m?s." Over the years, pirate editions and elusive original copies have made it a highly sought-after collector's item.

2025 restock; light pink and light blue vinyl. Reissue of the fourth Allman Brothers album, originally released in 1972. In tribute to Duane, however, they chose to bring the album to a close with a 34-minute jam taken from the Fillmore East sessions, which showcased what an amazing guitar player and force to be reckoned with Duane really was. Includes three bonus tracks and a replica of the original insert.

KAJI, MEIKO Yadokari + Shura No Hana (1973) CD
Wewantsounds continues its extensive Meiko Kaji reissue program -- in partnership with Teichiku Records and Kaji herself -- with the release of Yadokari, her third album from 1973. This marks the first time the album has been reissued on vinyl, featuring its original artwork and newly remastered audio. Renowned for her iconic 1970s films (Lady Snowblood, the Stray Cat Rock series) and admired by Quentin Tarantino, Meiko Kaji also released a string of outstanding albums on Teichiku, blending Japanese pop with cinematic grooves. Yadokari is reissued here with its original deluxe gatefold sleeve and OBI plus a two-page insert featuring new liner notes by Hashim Kotaro Bharoocha. As a special bonus, this edition includes an EP single featuring "Shura No Hana," famously featured on the Kill Bill soundtrack. Kaji was one of Japan's most iconic exploitation film actresses of the early 1970s. Beyond acting, she was invited by film studios to perform theme songs for many of her films leading to revered music career. Between 1972 and 1974, she recorded five albums for Teichiku, which have since become highly sought after. Yadokari ("hermit crab"), released in 1973, was Kaji's third album for the label. Like its predecessors Gincho Wataridori and Hajiki Uta, it offers a rich mix of kay?kyoku (Japanese pop), traditional enka, psychedelic rock, and cinematic '70s funk. The album includes two tracks, "Hagure Bushi" and "Kiba no Ballad," from the cult 1973 TV series Sengoku Rock Hagure Kiba, in which Kaji starred. "Hagure Bushi" stands out as one of the album's funkiest tracks. Like "Kiba no Ballad," it was composed and arranged by the legendary producer Yuji Ohno (best known for his work on Lupin the III). The album as a whole is a superb blend of atmospheric songs, from the haunting, slow-burning title track "Yadokari" to "Ah," which features groovy guitar licks, harmonica, and sleek string arrangements, evoking a subtle Morricone influence. To complete this reissue, Wewantsounds has included the rare 1973 7" EP "Shura No Hana/H? Yare Ho" as a bonus. Only released as a single, "Shura No Hana" (Flower of Carnage") is a cult classic, famously featured on Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill Vol. 2 soundtrack. A key release in Meiko Kaji's 1972 - 1974 Teichiku Records catalog, Yadokari is a testament to her singular talent as a singer.

DJ NOTOYA Funk Tide: Tokyo Jazz-Funk From Electric Bird 1978-87 LP
2025 restock; LP version. A stylish selection of jazz-funk from Japanese label Electric Bird, selected by DJ Notoya and featuring Yasuaki Shimizu, Shunzo Ohno, Bobby Lyle, Toshiyuki Honda, Mikio Masuda, David Matthews, and Ronnie Foster. Following the success of the Tokyo Glow compilation, Wewantsounds once again teams up with Japanese Tokyo-based DJ Notoya to dig the rich Electric Bird catalogue and come with a versatile selection of sunny jazz-funk gems recorded between 1978 and 1987 for the label. Most tracks make their vinyl debut outside of Japan and the album has been designed by Optigram/Manuel Sepulveda and is annotated by DJ Notoya. Audio newly remastered in Tokyo by King Records. A sub-label from the venerable Japanese label King Records, Electric Bird was set up in 1977 to cater for the booming Nippon jazz funk audience that King -- as the Japanese licensee for such US jazz labels at Blue Note or CTI -- had grown for years. Taking advantage of their experience and the many contacts King had garnered through their American partners, Electric Bird, headed by in-house producer Shigeyuki Kawashima, decided to apply the same formula to their new label. Kawashima began signing a new wave of jazz musicians from Japan, putting them in state-of-the-art Tokyo or New York studios and backing them with the best American and Japanese players in order to shape the slick, sun-drenched jazz funk sound that would be Electric Bird's signature sound. With Funk Tide, DJ Notoya aimed at showcasing the diversity of the label's output, from the funky opener "In The Sky" by Trumpeter Shunzo Ohno to the sunshine mid-tempo groove of sax player Toshiyuki Honda's "Living in a City" featuring Paulinho Da Costa on perc via Mikio Masuda's Fender Rhodes-infected "Let's Get Together." One of Funk Tide's highlights is certainly Katsutoshi Morizono's "Space Traveller" from 1978, a remake of James Vincent's eponymous cult classic recorded two years before with some of Earth Wind And Fire's musicians and which has since become a favorite on the groove scene. Faithful to Vincent's beautiful laid-back, breezy original, Morizono's rendition add its own spice to it, and ending Notoya's skilled selection of the cutting-edge Electric Bird label on a perfect note.

Moving along the shades of early psychedelia and contemporary progressive rock, Byzantyum launched the careers of Mick Barakan (later of Lone Justice), Robin Lamble, Chaz Jankel (future member of Ian Dury & The Blockheads) and Robin Sylvester. The guitarists are the band's fulcrum, giving free rein to rocking riffs and fiery leads as well as moodier 12-string passages. GRAUZONE Eisbar (Blue Vinyl) 12"
WRWTFWW Records presents the official reissue of Grauzone's essential 1981 maxi single with timeless classic "Eisb?r," proto-techno beast "FILM 2," and romantic synth ballad "Ich Lieb Sie," just in time for the 40th anniversary of the Swiss band's formation. The three-track vinyl is sourced from the original reels, cut at 45rpm, and comes with its iconic artwork on a 350gsm sleeve. This special limited edition is available in blue vinyl variant. Written by Martin Eicher after a nightmare in which he saw talking polar bears on the walls, and with music by the Grauzone crew consisting of Martin and his brother Stephan Eicher, Marco Repetto, Christian "GT" Tr?ssel, and Claudine Chirac (on saxophone), "Eisb?r" is the most recognizable title from the band, a sublime mix of ingredients reflecting the transitional era it comes from -- the raw energy of punk music still palpable, combined with the audacity of early electronics, the warm groove of a disco gem, beautifully fragile lyrics, and one of the best basslines ever. It became a mega hit, totally unplanned, but how could you resist such a track? "FILM 2" is the ultimate B-side monster, a menacing all-instrumental pre-techno masterpiece, slowly building to a magnetizing frenzy. An instant underground favorite, it was famously heard played at both speeds depending on the scenes and DJs you were frequenting, 45rpm as it was first intended, and 33rpm for the cosmic experience. The maxi single ends with "Ich Lieb Sie," a synth-pop meets doo-wop ballad, a true love song oozing with innocence. Simple, stylish, and just right. At the crossroads of post-punk, new wave, pop, and electronic experimentation, the Eisb?r maxi offers three songs that are technically different but hold the same spirit, the perfect embodiment of Grauzone's music -- wild, unpredictable, and youthful, yet sophisticated, catchy, and ingenious. The magic recipe for the good stuff. Stephan Eicher went on to be, arguably, the most successful Swiss musician ever, with an international career extending from pop chanson to experimental escapades and collaborations with Moondog, artists Sophie Calle and John Armleder, and author Martin Suter among many other luminaries. Marco Repetto flourished as a techno and ambient producer, releasing multiple projects including releases on Aphex Twin's Rephlex label.

BOYD, JOE And the Roots of Rhythm Remain (Paperback) Book
Paperback. 960 pages. 2.2" H x 8.7" L x 5.7" W (2.56 lbs). "From the legendary producer of Nick Drake, R.E.M., Toots and the Maytals, and Pink Floyd and author of White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s comes a riveting, world-spanning tour de force illuminating the artists, histories, controversies, and collaborations that shaped global music. Paul Simon told Joe Boyd that when he first heard the accordion flourish that would open his multi-platinum album Graceland, it seemed to proclaim, 'You haven't heard this before!' Yet the 1980s 'world music' boom that Simon's album helped usher in had roots that extended back through the decades and across continents: tango on the eve of World War I, Latin dance across the '30s, '40s and '50s, reggae in the '70s, pre-War samba and pre-Beatles bossa nova, Eastern European ensembles filling capitalist concert halls during the Cold War, Indian ragas changing rock and roll in the 1960s, the folk music-inspired classical composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. In this sweeping history compiled from more than a decade of travel, research, interviews, and deep listening, Boyd sets out to explore centuries of fascinating backstories to these sounds. He shows how personalities, events, and politics in places such as Havana, Lagos, Budapest, Kingston, and Rio are as colorful and momentous as anything that took place in New Orleans, Harlem, Laurel Canyon, or Liverpool. And, moreover, how jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock 'n' roll would never have happened if it weren't for the notes and rhythms emanating from over the horizon. The one-of-a-kind result is And the Roots of Rhythm Remain: a glorious, symphonic celebration of the music that shapes the world."
